Chapter 53: Amnesia
The living room fell silent as Su Muluo turned his head to look at the dragon, Long Ling, who was lying on top of him.
Long Ling had buried his face in Su Muluo’s shoulder, wrapping his arms tightly around Su Muluo’s waist, motionless and already deeply asleep.
Su Muluo carefully unfastened the strap that bound his hands and helped Long Ling up, trying to take him back to the bedroom.
Long Ling was significantly taller than Su Muluo, and their body sizes were different, so it took a lot of effort for Su Muluo to move him the short distance from the living room to the bedroom. When he finally managed to get Long Ling onto the bed and was about to relax, Long Ling suddenly reached out, pulled him back, and held him tightly in his arms.
—Then he buried his face in Su Muluo’s shoulder again, turning over and holding him as if he were a large pillow, refusing to let go.
Su Muluo: “……”
He looked at the dragon clinging to him and reached up to stroke his hair.
He knew that Long Ling hadn’t woken up; holding him was just an instinctive action—this stubborn and overbearing dragon still wanted to claim his phoenix even in his sleep.
Su Muluo didn’t mind this possessiveness; rather, he felt a subtle joy, as if his heartstrings were touched. However, behind the joy, there was still a lot of worry.
What was wrong with his dragon?
Why had this abnormality suddenly appeared?
Recalling the crimson hue in Long Ling’s eyes earlier, Su Muluo couldn’t help but feel anxious.
At that moment, Long Ling suddenly nuzzled against him, transforming into a black dragon and continuing to cling tightly to him.
Su Muluo stayed silent. The black dragon slept soundly, but its body was wrapped around him in circles, making it impossible for him to escape.
However, he had no intention of escaping. He shifted slightly to find a comfortable position within the black dragon’s embrace and gently rested his head against it, quietly watching.
The entire night passed without sleep as Su Muluo waited for his dragon to wake up, staying vigilant until the next morning.
At eight o’clock in the morning, the black dragon stirred, and when it opened its eyes, it had returned to human form.
Su Muluo immediately spoke up, “Are you okay? How do you feel…”
Before he could finish, the arms wrapped around his waist suddenly tightened, and Long Ling almost crushed him in his embrace, remaining silent.
Su Muluo looked up into Long Ling’s dark golden eyes and was startled.
—Those eyes, usually dark golden, now had a layer of blood-red, just like the day before… even more intense than the previous day.
“What’s wrong?”
Su Muluo, heart pounding, reached up to touch Long Ling’s brows and eyes, his fingertips trembling slightly.
“Do you feel unwell, or are you injured somewhere?”
“……”
Long Ling remained silent, gently enclosing Su Muluo’s fingers in his palm, pressing them against his own forehead, and closing his eyes.
After a moment, when he opened his eyes again, the blood-red hue had disappeared, and his eyes were once again purely dark golden.
“It’s nothing,” he gently patted Su Muluo’s shoulder and reassured him, “Just feeling a bit uncomfortable. It’s better now.”
Su Muluo didn’t believe him. “Were you uncomfortable yesterday too? Do you remember what happened yesterday?”
Long Ling was silent for a few seconds before replying, “I remember.”
Yesterday, he almost lost control and harmed his phoenix…
But fortunately, he managed to restrain himself in the end.
“So what exactly is going on?” Su Muluo asked, gripping Long Ling’s sleeve tightly. His entire mind was consumed by the unease caused by Long Ling’s unusual condition. “Is it because of that golden dragon? Did he poison you?”
Long Ling shook his head. “It shouldn’t be. My injuries have already healed, and with a phoenix around, his poison wouldn’t affect me.”
The phoenix’s saliva could heal wounds and also neutralize various toxins… But Su Muluo’s worry didn’t ease with Long Ling’s words; in fact, it grew stronger.
If it wasn’t that golden dragon causing trouble, then what was behind his dragon’s condition?
They had already done those things, and their souls were tightly connected, so there shouldn’t be any issues with soul stability…
Su Muluo felt a tangled mess of thoughts, and at that moment, Long Ling gently touched his lips and comforted him by pressing his forehead against Su Muluo’s. “It’s okay, phoenix. I do feel much better now.”
Su Muluo looked up at him and after a moment said, “How about we go to the Anomaly Bureau and have them check you out?”
Long Ling: “……”
Su Muluo clung to his sleeve, staring at him with wide, anxious eyes.
His concern for his dragon was evident, and his gaze was frantic. Long Ling met his eyes, his heart softening. Realizing he had made his phoenix anxious, he lowered his head and placed a kiss on Su Muluo’s forehead.
“Alright,” he said, “we’ll do as you wish.”
Su Muluo immediately got up to contact Liu He. Liu He was startled by the request but quickly responded, “No problem, Mr. Su. Please bring His Excellency Long Ling here. We have specialized treatment artifacts specifically for demons.”
Although demons were not as susceptible to illness as humans, they could still experience discomfort due to various reasons, such as overuse of their demonic power or severe injuries. Therefore, the Anomaly Bureau had created an artifact years ago that could detect symptoms in demons and provide treatment.
However, this artifact proved useless for Long Ling.
It couldn’t detect anything.
“Hmm… It doesn’t seem to be caused by external forces,” Liu He said. “Mr. Su, did you and His Excellency Long Ling do anything unusual before this?”
Her question wasn’t meant to be intrusive, but Su Muluo fell into silence upon hearing it.
He couldn’t exactly say… that he and his dragon had spent three days in bed together?
Could that be the reason for his dragon’s condition??
As Su Muluo thought about this, he glanced at Long Ling, only to find Long Ling smiling at him as if he wasn’t worried about his own condition, appearing remarkably carefree.
“Could it be because of that golden dragon?” Fan Huai and Zheng Hechun, who had heard about Long Ling’s condition, came over. “Did that golden dragon do something to His Excellency Long Ling?”
Liu He replied, “It’s possible! Did he use some kind of trick!”
This was in line with Su Muluo’s earlier guess. After some hesitation, he said, “Maybe.”
It seemed that Long Ling’s condition appeared after dealing with the golden dragon and then becoming intimate with him.
So the reason… might lie between these two.
“However, there’s another possibility,” Fan Huai added. “Many years ago, I met a demon who had suddenly gained immense power through a fortuitous event, but his health deteriorated rapidly, worsening day by day.”
Zheng Hechun evidently knew about this as well. “Isn’t it about that demon from three hundred years ago who broke through to a thousand-year demonic power overnight but then fell and died immediately?”
Fan Huai nodded and looked at Su Muluo. “Mr. Su, do you know about this?”
Su Muluo shook his head. “No.”
At that time, he was still secluded in the mountains with his dragon egg and wasn’t concerned with outside matters.
“That’s not surprising,” Fan Huai explained. “After all, the Anomaly Bureau suppressed the incident back then, and not many people know about it now.” Fan Huai continued, “There were three thousand-year-old demons in the demon world, but three hundred years ago, there was a fourth one, a white snake with the bloodline of a Jiaolong.”
A Jiaolong was not a true dragon but had part of the dragon’s bloodline, having been associated with the dragon clan thousands of years ago before both were wiped out.
“That white snake initially didn’t know it had Jiaolong bloodline. One day, it suddenly heard a voice telling it about its Jiaolong blood. At that moment, it seemed like its bloodline awakened, and its demonic power surged from five hundred years to a thousand years.”
“Later, the Anomaly Bureau investigated, but the snake avoided them. I had known him for a long time, and something felt off at that time—until a few days later, he suddenly came to me, looking emaciated and on the brink of death.”
“Back then, he couldn’t say anything; he just grabbed my hand, pointed at the sky with a terrified expression… and then died in front of me.”
Fan Huai fell silent for a moment, sighed, and said, “The Anomaly Bureau found this too strange and suppressed it. I’ve remembered it ever since because I knew what he was trying to say.”
Su Muluo asked, “What was it?”
Fan Huai whispered, “The Way of Heaven.”
As soon as those words left the speaker’s mouth, Su Muluo felt a chill creeping up his spine. It was a purely instinctive reaction, and at that moment, he even felt as if his long-buried memories had been pried open. However, the gap was quickly closed again, remaining tightly sealed without any looseness.
Meanwhile, Su Muluo’s hand was held by someone. He looked at Long Ling beside him and noticed that Long Ling was also frowning, seemingly sensing something.
On the other side, Fan Huai continued, “I think that white snake might have received something from the Heavenly Law. Unable to bear what it obtained, it ultimately died at the hands of the Heavenly Law… And the only special thing about it might be that dragon bloodline.”
After saying this, he looked at Long Ling. Long Ling asked, “Are you suggesting that my current situation is similar to his?”
“No, he lacked power, but you have it,” Fan Huai replied. “I don’t know exactly what happened back then, but one thing is certain—if it was the Heavenly Law that gave him power, then there might be some connection between the Heavenly Law and the dragon clan.”
Upon hearing this, Long Ling exchanged a glance with Su Muluo.
He remained silent, but Su Muluo understood everything.
It wasn’t just the dragon clan that had some connection with the Heavenly Law; the Phoenix clan did as well.
Moreover, it was no coincidence that he and his dragon were the last of the dragon and phoenix clans—just like that golden dragon.
And now, the abnormalities in his dragon’s body… were very likely related to the Heavenly Law.
Su Muluo’s expression turned icy. He had once thought that the Heavenly Law was just the rules of this world, formless and unchangeable, but now he felt something different.
The Heavenly Law… might never have been the rules of the world but rather had a concrete form, with its own thoughts and goals.
Perhaps, thousands of years ago, he had glimpsed this and even discovered the Heavenly Law’s thoughts and goals, which was why he left those words for his future self a millennium later.
But why, knowing the danger of the Heavenly Law, did he seal his own power and memories… What was he guarding against?
Su Muluo was silent for a long time. Long Ling looked at his Phoenix and after waiting a while said, “Shall we go back?”
The issues they now faced were far beyond what the people of the Anomaly Bureau could handle.
Su Muluo responded with a soft “mm” and looked up at Fan Huai and the others, saying, “Sorry for the trouble, and thank you.”
“No need,” Fan Huai shook his head and said the words Liuhou often said, “If Mr. Su and Lord Long Ling need help, the Anomaly Bureau will certainly do everything in its power.”
Su Muluo smiled at him, “I understand. Thank you.”
He and Long Ling returned to their rented apartment. Seeing that his Phoenix looked troubled, Long Ling gently shook his hand and said, “Don’t worry, Phoenix. No matter what happens, I will be with you.”
Su Muluo looked at him and replied, “But I’m worried about you.”
Right now, he needed to understand not the Heavenly Law’s purpose but what was happening to his dragon.
If it was indeed the Heavenly Law targeting his dragon, what could he do?
At this thought, Su Muluo suddenly felt a strong urge to break the seal on himself and restore all his memories and power.
He needed to regain his previous strength and uncover the secrets of the Heavenly Law, or he wouldn’t be able to protect his dragon.
Su Muluo took a deep breath, buried his face in Long Ling’s arms, and hugged him.
Long Ling stroked Su Muluo’s hair, resting his chin lightly on his head and said, “That so-called purpose of the Heavenly Law was thwarted a thousand years ago. It’s not going to succeed now—Phoenix, rest assured, I won’t end up like that white snake.”
He gently comforted his Phoenix. Su Muluo listened in silence, then looked up and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
“I won’t let you end up like him either.”
Long Ling was silent for a moment.
Immediately, Long Ling contentedly kissed Su Muluo on the cheek again.
Su Muluo felt the slight warmth on his face, rested his head on Long Ling’s shoulder, and let his eyelashes fall silently.
How should I break the seal on myself?
He wondered.
Should I visit Su Yuan again?
—
The next day, neither of them went out. Su Muluo stayed in the rented apartment all day, keeping watch over his dragon. By evening, Long Ling had shown no abnormalities.
At bedtime, Long Ling held Su Muluo close and said after a moment of thought, “If I were to act like I did yesterday with Phoenix, would Phoenix tie me up?”
Upon hearing this, Su Muluo gave him a light tap on the head.
Long Ling: “?”
“Act like you did yesterday, then,” Su Muluo replied expressionlessly, “I wouldn’t refuse.”
Long Ling’s eyes immediately lit up. “So—”
Su Muluo pulled the blanket over Long Ling’s head and said, “Go to sleep.”
Then with a “click,” he turned off the light.
Long Ling: … Tsk.
He had just said he wouldn’t refuse.
But he only showed a hint of grievance on his face; in his heart, he remained worried that his current condition might cause harm to Phoenix. This thought made him furrow his brow.
Su Muluo had already buried his face in Long Ling’s chest, gently rubbing against him.
Long Ling looked down at his Phoenix and, after a few seconds, lowered his head slightly to place a soft kiss on Su Muluo’s hair.
For Phoenix’s sake, he would never be controlled by the Heavenly Law.
Long Ling thought.
But before that, he needed to do some things… which might make Phoenix unhappy for a short time.
He fiddled with Su Muluo’s hair, inhaling the pleasant scent from his Phoenix, and sighed imperceptibly.
—
The next morning, when Su Muluo woke up, he felt something was wrong.
He hadn’t actually fallen asleep during the first half of the night. He had intended to keep watch over his dragon, but an inexplicable force had enveloped him, pulling him into a deep sleep.
Su Muluo instinctively felt that his dragon was behind this. He looked up and saw Long Ling sitting by the bed, staring at him without moving.
But usually, Long Ling wouldn’t get up so quickly; he would hold his Phoenix and wait until Su Muluo woke up.
Moreover, Long Ling’s gaze was off. Although he looked the same, Su Muluo felt a hint of… unfamiliarity.
Su Muluo clenched his fists, silently sat up, and met Long Ling’s gaze.
He had a very bad premonition, but before this premonition became a reality, he did not speak and dared not speak.
If he spoke, then the premonition he was unwilling to believe in his heart… would likely come true.
The room was silent for a long time. Long Ling narrowed his eyes slightly, looking at Su Muluo, and was the first to speak:
“—Who are you?”
These simple three words struck Su Muluo’s heart like a sharp sword. At that moment, his heart sank, plunging into a deep abyss, leaving him speechless.
What’s happening?
Does his dragon… not remember him?
Su Muluo stood frozen, feeling as though his blood had turned to ice, his organs were in a tight knot, and his heart was aching like it was bleeding.
Long Ling then looked him up and down, and said, “You’re actually quite good-looking.”
He said this while leaning in and gently sniffing Su Muluo’s hair, finding the scent pleasant, soft, and very appealing.
Then he confidently asked, “Are you my wife?”
Su Muluo: …
