Zhan Weiguang sat in the back row and watched them. He suddenly felt that Zhan Weiyang’s reliance on Pei Qing was a bit too much, which made him feel uncomfortable. However, he couldn’t quite explain the specifics why.
So he called out, “Zhan Weiyang.” His tone wasn’t very nice, and his voice was a bit low.
Zhan Weiyang heard it but didn’t want to pay attention to him. He just lowered his head slightly and drank the milk tea in small sips with a straw. He still remembered that Pei Qing told him to drink it slowly.
Zhan Weiguang took out a packaged straw from the bag under his feet and reached out to knock Zhan Weiyang’s head.
Zhan Weiyang turned his head and glared at him, still not talking to him, and turned his head back.
When Pei Qing drove the car to the airport, it was almost half an hour later than the arrival time of the plane. In fact, they were not too late. If Zhan Xueqing had luggage to check in, she might not have come out yet.
They parked the car in the parking lot and walked into the terminal. When Pei Qing was still looking at the display screen to find the exit for Zhan Xueqing’s flight number, Zhan Weiyang had already seen Zhan Xueqing. He pulled Pei Qing’s sleeve and said, “Qing jie.”
Pei Qing looked up and saw Zhan Xueqing sitting on her suitcase in the middle of the arrival hall, staring out the floor-to-ceiling glass window.
Zhan Xueqing was very beautiful, with the soft and traditional appearance of an oriental woman, but she had a neat short haircut, wearing a long black down jacket and jeans, and a pair of white sneakers on her feet.
“Zhan Xueqing,” it was Zhan Weiguang who opened his mouth to call out to her.
Zhan Xueqing turned around, her gaze first swept across Zhan Weiyang and Zhan Weiguang’s faces and finally fell on Pei Qing.
Zhan Weiguang walked towards her and asked her, “When did you arrive?”
Zhan Xueqing stood up from the suitcase, pushed the suitcase towards them, and said, “Arrived a while ago.”
“Qing jie,” Zhan Weiyang greeted. Zhan Xueqing walked up to them, smiled at Zhan Weiyang, stood on tiptoe to touch Zhan Weiyang’s head, and said, “Has Yangyang grown taller?”
Zhan Weiyang also smiled and nodded, “Mmm.”
At this time, Pei Qing said, “Let’s go home first.”
Zhan Xueqing looked at Pei Qing and asked him, “Are you having fun here?”
Pei Qing said, “Pretty good.”
Zhan Weiguang reached out to take Zhan Xueqing’s suitcase, turned around, and walked outside, saying, “I guess there will be a traffic jam later. Let’s go.”
The others followed.
Arriving at the parking lot, Zhan Weiguang put Zhan Xueqing’s suitcase in the trunk, and then Pei Qing drove again. Zhan Weiyang sat in the passenger seat, and Zhan Xueqing sat with Zhan Weiguang in the back.
Zhan Weiguang handed the milk tea he bought to Zhan Xueqing and said, “I bought it for you.”
Zhan Xueqing took it and said, “Did you come so late just to buy milk tea?”
Zhan Weiyang hadn’t finished his milk tea yet and was about to continue drinking it, but when he heard Zhan Xueqing’s words, he paused and looked back.
Zhan Weiguang said, “No, it’s because of a traffic jam.”
Zhan Xueqing put the straw into the cup, took a sip of the milk tea that had not yet completely cooled down, and said, “Who knows if it’s true or not?”
Zhan Weiguang said, “If you don’t want to drink it, just return it. We came all this way to pick you up and even bought you milk tea, and you have so many complaints.”
Zhan Xueqing looked at him and said, “It’s been so long since we’ve seen each other, and you haven’t treated me any better.” After that, she said to the front row, “Isn’t that right, Pei Qing?”
Pei Qing started the car and slowly drove out of the car park in a line, saying in a flat tone, “Traffic jam.”
Zhan Xueqing and Zhan Weiguang were born in the same year. Strictly speaking, Zhan Weiguang was a few months older, but they usually called each other by their names and didn’t have the feeling of being siblings.
Zhan Xueqing called Pei Qing’s name directly, which made Zhan Weiguang feel a little strange. He recalled and realised that he couldn’t remember how he addressed Pei Qing the last time Zhan Xueqing and Pei Qing appeared together.
There was still a traffic jam on the way back.
Zhan Weiguang and Zhan Xueqing were in the back row, each looking down at their phones.
Pei Qing turned on the radio, his eyes sweeping across Zhan Weiyang’s face. Seeing that he was focusing on the sound of the radio, he said, “Tune the channel yourself.”
Zhan Weiyang reached out to tune the radio channel, and a channel was playing pop songs, so he changed to another channel and heard Guo Degang1Chinese comedian and actor‘s crosstalk2Crosstalk is a special kind of dialogue and a special kind of performance.
At this point, Zhan Xueqing suddenly looked up and said, “Let’s listen to the song, that station just now.”
Zhan Weiyang did not respond. He wanted to listen to Guo Degang more; his finger was on the FM button, and he looked at Pei Qing.
Pei Qing said, “Listen to whatever you want to listen to.”
Zhan Weiyang slowly released his finger, leaving the channel on Guo Degang.
Zhan Xueqing in the back did not say a word.
After a while, Zhan Weiyang changed the channel back with some torment in his heart, and heard the slow singing coming from inside. He looked up at the rearview mirror and found that he could not see Zhan Xueqing’s expression from this angle, so he looked at Pei Qing again.
Pei Qing didn’t say anything and just smiled.
Although Zhan Weiyang couldn’t hear Guo Degang, at least he didn’t have to worry that Zhan Xueqing would be unhappy, so he sat back at ease. He leaned his head against the car window, closed his eyes and began to doze off.
When they got home, it was past dinner time and it was all dark.
There was a heater in the car, and Zhan Weiyang felt cold the moment he got out. Even though he was wearing a down jacket, the cold wind was blowing on his face and into his neck.
Zhan Weiguang lifted the suitcase down from the back, but Zhan Xueqing had already entered the house. She threw herself into her grandmother’s arms and shouted coquettishly, “Grandma!”
Since her parents divorced, she changed her name and followed her male cousins to call her grandmother3this is supposed to be nainai(grandma from father’s side), and no longer called her grandma4and this is waipo(grandma from mother’s side).
Pei Qing went to park the car. When he came back, he saw Zhan Weiyang still standing outside, and asked him, “Why don’t you go in?”
Zhan Weiyang said, “I’m waiting for you.”
Pei Qing raised his hand and put his arm around his shoulders, saying, “Let’s go in and have dinner.”
Dinner was already prepared, because they knew these people were going to the airport to pick someone up. So those at home were waiting for them to come back and have dinner together.
Everyone sat down around the dining room table, and Auntie Luo brought out the hot dishes from the kitchen one by one.
Zhan Xueqing sat next to her Grandma and leaned on her. She then said, “Wow, so generous today?”
Zhan Weiguang said, “It’s made especially for you.”
Zhan Xueqing smiled sweetly.
Grandma turned her head to look at her and asked, “Why did you cut your hair so short? It’s too short.”
Zhan Xueqing raised her hand and touched her hair, saying, “Is it short? It’s okay.” After that, she suddenly looked at Pei Qing and asked, “Do you think it’s short?”
Pei Qing sat next to Zhan Weiyang. Seeing Zhan Weiyang trying to pick up the fish on the table, he reached out to help him pick up a large piece and put it in his bowl. At this time, he heard Zhan Xueqing talking to him, looked up and said, “As long as you like it.”
Zhan Xueqing originally had a smile on her face, but it suddenly disappeared. Then she pouted, let out a laugh, and reached for food from the plate in front of Pei Qing with her chopsticks.
They sat on both sides of the long table, facing each other diagonally, and the distance was a little far.
Pei Qing saw that she had just reached it, so he reached out and lifted the plate to move closer to her, letting her pick it up and then put it back calmly.
Zhan Xueqing glanced at him, lowered her head and ate the dish silently.
