Chapter 53

Zhan Weiyang finished his shower, returned to his room, and lay flat on the bed. Perhaps because of his excitement, he lay very flat, with his hands beside him and tightly pressed against his thighs.

There was a sound coming from outside the door, Zhan Weiyang guessed that Pei Qing went to take a shower, and he continued to wait patiently. After about twenty minutes, Pei Qing pushed open his door and walked in gently.

Pei Qing, wearing pyjamas, walked to Zhan Weiyang’s bed, squatted down and reached out to touch his hair, “Still not asleep?”

Zhan Weiyang did not answer. He just hurriedly moved to the side, leaving half of the bed for Pei Qing.

Pei Qing smiled at him, “What’s wrong today?”

Zhan Weiyang urged him, “Come up quickly.”

Pei Qing looked at him for a while and finally took off his shoes and went to bed. He covered himself with the same quilt as Zhan Weiyang and said, “Do you want me to coax you to sleep today?” He propped his head with one hand and lay on his side facing Zhan Weiyang.

Zhan Weiyang didn’t say anything. After a while, he came over, hugged Pei Qing’s waist and kissed him.

Pei Qing kissed Zhan Weiyang gently at first, but then he began to feel that Zhan Weiyang was rubbing against him, so he reached out, held his waist, and said, “What are you doing?”

Zhan Weiyang looked up at him, a little confused, “Didn’t you drink?”

Pei Qing’s voice was hoarse, “So?”

Zhan Weiyang said innocently, “Isn’t it said that drinking alcohol will cause that?”

Pei Qing looked at him and asked, “You mean doing something reckless after drinking?”

Zhan Weiyang suddenly felt embarrassed and buried his face in Pei Qing’s arms.

Pei Qing laughed and said to him, “Sex after drinking is actually an excuse for irresponsibility.”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t understand and looked up at him.

Pei Qing reached out and rubbed Zhan Weiyang’s hair, “Didn’t we agree to wait until you were eighteen?”

Zhan Weiyang said to him, “But Chen Youyou said we didn’t have to wait until we were eighteen.”

Pei Qing was silent for a moment and asked him, “Why did you tell Chen Youyou everything?”

       “I didn’t,” Zhan Weiyang whispered, “I didn’t tell him.”

Pei Qing sighed softly and told Zhan Weiyang, “Yangyang, do you know why it’s eighteen?”

       Zhan Weiyang shook his head.

Pei Qing said to him, “That’s a dividing line when you reach maturity both physically and mentally.” At this point, Pei Qing paused for a moment. He thought Zhan Weiyang might never reach that dividing line of complete maturity, but he continued, “You can date now, but some things are not good for you now, do you know?”

Zhan Weiyang seemed to understand and didn’t seem to understand.

Pei Qing had many thoughts. Of course, it was not just waiting for the right time for Zhan Weiyang to mature physically and mentally, as he said, but more of it was because he couldn’t get over his own hurdle. Just like he refused to kiss Zhan Weiyang before, he often felt an inexplicable sense of guilt when facing Zhan Weiyang. He couldn’t tell it, and he didn’t know whether he was right or wrong.

Today, when he was with Zhan Pengcheng and heard Zhan Pengcheng’s words that he was worried that no one would take care of Zhan Weiyang in the future, he wanted to tell Zhan Pengcheng that he was willing to take care of Zhan Weiyang.

But so what? The care that Zhan Pengcheng wanted might not be the same as his care. He didn’t even know whether what Zhan Weiyang needed was the same as what he needed.

Pei Qing kept telling himself to wait a little longer, even if, as Zhan Weiyang said, there was no difference between seventeen and eighteen. However, the one who really needed this time was not Zhan Weiyang but Pei Qing herself.

He reached out and hugged Zhan Weiyang, saying, “Go to sleep.”

Zhan Weiyang was very disappointed and asked him, “Is it still not possible?”

Pei Qing said, “No, eighteen is the bottom line, not even one day earlier.”

Zhan Weiyang lowered his head and counted how many months he had left before he turned eighteen. After a while, he said, “What if I can’t wait until that day?”

Pei Qing was a little surprised and looked at him, “What are you talking about?”

Zhan Weiyang was not only disappointed but also a little unhappy. He said sullenly, “I may not be able to wait for that day.”

Pei Qing didn’t expect him to say such a thing and asked him, “Why can’t you wait?”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t answer. After a while, he whispered, “I told you.”

Pei Qing pulled his shoulders, made him look at him, and said in a serious tone, “What’s going on?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I said I would become a tree.”

Pei Qing asked him, “When will you become a tree? Will you become a tree at the age of eighteen?” When he asked questions, his tone became more and more serious.

Zhan Weiyang said, “No, I said when the points are deducted.”

Pei Qing said, “But you didn’t tell me what’s deducting your points.”

Zhan Weiyang felt that he was pinching his shoulders very hard, and he struggled a little.

Pei Qing then let him go, slowed down his tone and said to him, “Yangyang, can you tell gege?”

Zhan Weiyang finally shook his head.

He sat quietly for a while and suddenly raised his hand to take off his clothes. Pei Qing quickly held his hand to prevent him from moving.

Zhan Weiyang said anxiously, “I don’t have time.”

Pei Qing saw him trying to struggle, so he simply opened his arms and held him, trapping him in his embrace. He said, “No, you need to explain it to me first. What points deduction? What about turning into a tree?”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t say anything. After a while, Pei Qing saw that he had closed his eyes.

“Yangyang?” Pei Qing called him. Zhan Weiyang closed his eyes and didn’t respond.

       “Asleep?”

       Zhan Weiyang still didn’t respond.

Pei Qing wanted to wake him up and ask him to speak clearly, but seeing that Zhan Weiyang had his eyes closed, he really couldn’t bear it, so he finally helped him lie down and covered him with the quilt.

After doing all this, Pei Qing didn’t get up immediately but waited quietly for a while until he heard Zhan Weiyang’s light and even breathing. Then he slowly got up and got out of bed.

He stood by the bed, reached out to turn off the light, and when he fell into darkness, he still stared at the sleeping figure on the bed.

An unspeakable anxiety gradually surged up.

He realised that Zhan Weiyang’s condition was not right before because it was not convenient to tell Zhan Pengcheng directly, so he specially communicated with Zhan Weiguang. At that time, Zhan Weiguang told him not to worry, and he also thought that Zhan Weiyang’s attention would be diverted over time and he would get better, but now it seemed that this was not the case. He didn’t know whether the things in Zhan Weiyang’s head should be called hallucinations or delusions, but it was obviously abnormal.

Pei Qing left Zhan Weiyang’s room and returned to his own. He sat down by the bed, unable to sleep, pondering what he should do.

He didn’t know whether he should tell Zhan Pengcheng first. After all, Zhan Pengcheng was Zhan Weiyang’s guardian, but he was afraid that Zhan Pengcheng would be repulsed by his interference in these matters.

If he took Zhan Weiyang to see a doctor himself, Zhan Weiyang would probably resist. He still remembered how much Zhan Weiyang didn’t want to go to the hospital.

Pei Qing raised his hand and rubbed his forehead. He thought he had to ask Zhan Weiyang first. Even if Zhan Weiyang would resist, he must know what was going on with him.

When lying on the bed, Pei Qing suddenly thought of someone—Chen Youyou.

Since Zhan Weiyang had a good friend who could talk about everything, maybe Chen Youyou would know what kind of mess Zhan Weiyang was thinking about in his little head.

Chapter 7

“Why are you hiding here?” Jiahui asked in a small voice.

“What did Chu Yichen tell you?” He deleted the text messages on his phone and returned them to her.

“Chen ge said that you took over the company’s affairs and were sent to City C for a while. Then he mentioned that Auntie wanted to go to clear her mind, so she took me along.”

“My mother?!” Chu Yunhan was shocked, “…how did he find my mother?”

“‘Find’? What do you mean? Hasn’t Auntie been staying at the villa in the Beishan?”

Of course not. The day before the incident, he had Gray Wolf quietly pick up his mother from there and send her to a sanatorium in City H. The whole thing was done in extreme secrecy—how could Chu Yichen have tracked them down? Could it be that Gray Wolf’s men were being watched by him from the start? Did he know that Gray Wolf would betray him? Or perhaps he had already sensed his involvement in the matter? But if that were the case, how could he have been lured into the trap by just a phone call from him?

Seeing the confused look on Jiahui’s face, he couldn’t tell the whole story, so he could only ignore it and say, “It’s nothing. How is my mom’s mental state right now? Is her health okay? There weren’t any problems on the way, were there?”

“It’s good. Chen ge arranged this trip very thoughtfully. Auntie was very happy and was in a good mood along the way. To be honest, did you and Chen ge have a fight? Don’t cause trouble for him. He’s been overwhelmed with work, dealing with a ton of things every day, and it’s been a long time since we had a meal together. Oh, right, we went to Sweden…”

“Shh, keep your voice down.” Chu Yunhan interrupted her ramble and said, “Next, I need you to help me with a few things. I can’t explain the reasons right now, but I promise I’ll tell you everything later. For now, please don’t ask, alright?”

Jiahui saw his solemn expression and was a little at a loss, “…Okay, what’s the matter?”

“First, when you leave here later, make sure to avoid everyone. Act like you haven’t seen me and don’t know that I’m home.”

“Oh.” She suppressed her curiosity and agreed.

“Second, don’t show your cell phone to others. If a stranger calls me, tell him I’m at the Chu family’s old house.”

       “Okay.”

“Third, help me take good care of my mother and find an excuse for Grandpa to send someone to pick her up and take her back to Zhou’s house.”

“But Auntie said that she was used to living in Beishan courtyard…”

“We have to leave there!” Chu Yunhan said anxiously.

Jiahui was taken aback by his attitude, but the two grew up together and trusted each other. Since it was something Chu Yunhan asked, there must be some reasons, so she nodded and said, “Alright, I understand.”

After Jiahui left, Chu Yunhan quietly slipped out of the storage room. He originally wanted to go all the way back, but he was caught by bodyguards on the way and escorted directly back to the room. As a result, in addition to being locked up and not allowed to leave the room, he was not given food for two whole days. Chu Yunhan felt that Chu Yichen was treating him like a pet, just like Thor. When Thor was obedient, it was allowed to walk around the yard; when guests arrived, it would be chained up, and only when it wagged its tail would it be fed. If it disobeyed, it would be left hungry.

       He couldn’t live like this.

However, in this predicament, all he could do was wait. Like a trembling lion in a circus caravan, waiting for a minstrel willing to lend a hand.

Every morning, the sun slowly rose from the east, casting a red glow across the sky and making the black tiles on the roof glisten. At night, the daylight gradually faded, the sky darkened, and a crescent moon appeared alongside scattered stars. Time had never felt so slow before—so slow that it left a barren emptiness in his heart.

Chu Yunhan, who was bored, leaned against the window and stared at the sky all day long, anxiously waiting for the long-awaited response.

On the tenth day after Jiahui’s arrival, Chu Yichen informed him to attend an event with him.

       ——Shengjing Group’s charity dinner.

Upon hearing the news, Chu Yunhan’s heart beat wildly. He pretended to be disdainful and said, “It’s boring, I won’t go.”

“I thought that after being locked up for so long, you would want to go out for a walk.” The man raised his eyes and said, “If you don’t want to go, then forget it.”

It was as if a dull thunder had hit him, and he felt great regret. He hated himself for trying to die for no reason and stuttered, “Uh, it’s better to go out for a walk. It’s too boring at home.”

Chu Yichen looked at him for a while and said, “Go and change clothes.”

A dark blue formal suit was prepared for him. Chu Yunhan usually disliked colours that were too dark and always felt immature. At this moment, he was not in the mood to care about whether he looked good or not. His mind was in such a mess that he even tied his tie wrong several times.

He hadn’t chosen the wrong person; that guy was indeed reliable. Now, he could finally leave this cage, but what was the next step? What exactly were his plans? Everything was still unclear, and he could only proceed cautiously, step by step. The opportunity was hard-earned, so he had to be extremely careful.

In the back seat of the car, the two sat side by side, silently all the way. It wasn’t until they entered the venue that Chu Yichen said, “Outside, you are still the eldest son of the Chu family, so keep your mouth shut.”

“Don’t worry, I will be a puppet and not cause you any trouble.” He glanced at Bai Xiao, who was following him and spoke in a mocking tone.

These kinds of banquets were still so boring—people clustered in twos and threes, exchanging pleasantries, each expanding and solidifying their connections. Having been absent for a long time, he was immediately noticed by a few familiar young gentlemen as soon as he showed up, who were eagerly signalling him.

Chu Yunhan knew that they were afraid of Chu Yichen and could not come over to greet him, so it was inconvenient for him to come over and say hello. Unfortunately, he was now a ‘prisoner’ and couldn’t run over to hang out with them, so he had to pretend not to see them.

“It’s really rare for Chairman Chu’s to visit. It’s a glorious sight.” A voice was heard, and then a middle-aged man with a beard was seen striding towards them. He was the second son of Sheng Weiyong, the president of Shengjing Group, and the head of the Southeast Region—Sheng Guang.

A smile appeared on Chu Yichen’s face, and he extended his hand to shake hands with him, “How could a Chu be absent from Shengjing’s invitation?”

“I’ve always heard that Chairman Chu is handsome and dashing. When I saw you today, you were indeed extraordinary.” The one speaking was a young man standing behind him, dressed in a perfectly tailored white suit with a hint of roguishness in his smile. Chu Yunhan’s gaze fell on him, then awkwardly looked away, afraid that others might notice something amiss.

This man’s name was Sheng Ming. He was Sheng Guang’s biological younger brother, fifth in line. He was known as ‘Fifth Master’ down the road, and he also had the nickname ‘Gods Impossible to Save’, meaning that once this guy targeted you, even the Gods would have a hard time saving you.

The reason why they had this title was because the Sheng family also started out in the underworld, and their home base was in the north. In the past few years, there had been people in the court, and their claws had become deeper and longer, and they had reached K City. The newly opened nightclub in the south of the city was their property, and it had affected Lihao’s business to a certain extent.

Chu Yichen smiled lightly, “Thank you. Chairman xiao Sheng is a young talent with a bright future.”

After the show of mutual compliments was over, they began to take their seats. It was the same routine of soliciting donations that followed: a few children were brought on stage to tell their tragic stories, and some rare items were auctioned off. Business tycoons spent lavishly to show their generosity.

Chu Yunhan’s gaze kept drifting toward Sheng the fifth, so he decided to lower his head and focus on the wine glass in front of him. After sitting there for a while, he found an excuse to go to the restroom. Bai Xiao followed him to the door, and after Chu Yunhan made a round in the restroom without finding anything unusual, he began to feel anxious.

Was he actually planning to help him escape or not? This was the best opportunity, and who knew when the next chance would come… He sat on the toilet for a long time, waiting until Bai Xiao came in to find him before he emerged from the restroom with a frustrated expression. After that, he sat there like a puppet, completely detached from the performances on stage and the conversations happening around him, with no interest in paying attention.

Until the end of the banquet, there was no movement.

Hei Yu leaned next to Chu Yichen and whispered a few words. The man pondered for a moment and said, “I have something to do at the moment, so you go back first.”

Chu Yunhan and Bai Xiao got into the car and leaned back in the backseat with their eyes closed without saying a word. About ten minutes later, the driver suddenly made a sharp turn and stepped on the brakes, causing the entire car to slide out of a semicircle due to the huge inertial belt. His head hit the car window and broke, causing severe pain.

“Don’t move!” Bai Xiao looked stern and pulled out his gun neatly.

His head was dizzy, and there were stars in front of his eyes. Suddenly, he heard several gunshots coming from behind, and the tyres of the car went flat. Then Bai Xiao pulled him out of the car. He stumbled a few steps and finally stopped.

In front of him was a circle of men in black suits, all with guns in their hands.

“Who are you?” Bai Xiao lost his smile and asked gloomily.

“We just met, and you forgot so quickly?” A familiar voice rang, and the man in a white suit appeared leisurely in front of everyone with an extremely evil smile.

“…Sheng Fifth Master?” Bai Xiao protected Chu Yunhan behind him, “What do you want to do?”

“According to the cliché, it should be called… a hero saving the beauty.”

“What?” Before Bai Xiao could react, he was hit on the back of his neck, his vision went dark, and he fell to the ground. Immediately, a man in black stepped forward, grabbed the gun and held him down. Before Bai Xiao fainted, he gritted his teeth and struggled, “Chu Yunhan, you despicable villain!”

Chu Yunhan breathed heavily; it was he who had just made the move. The children of the Chu family had learned self-defence techniques from a young age to handle sudden dangers. This chop was one of the simplest ways to neutralise an opponent. Seeing someone raise a gun, he shouted urgently, “Don’t shoot him!” His agitation caused a sudden dizziness, and he almost collapsed to his knees.

“If you don’t want to kill, I won’t kill him. Why so anxious?” Sheng Ming held him in his arms. Seeing the wound on his head, he clicked his tongue twice, took out a handkerchief to hold the wound for him, and said with a smile, “It won’t look good if you have a scar, beautiful.”

“You damn near killed me.” He couldn’t help but curse.

“So you have to wear your seat belt when riding in the car.” Sheng Ming smiled, helped him get into his car, bent over and fastened his seat belt for him, and said, “No one will disturb you now, we can have a good talk.”

       “What to talk about?”

“The reward for the hero who saved the beauty.”

Chu Yunhan’s heart sank and he said, “You are taking advantage of the situation.”

“Yeah.” He admitted readily, “I still know the matters of the underworld. Previously, there was a rebellion within Black Eagle’s ranks involving Grey Wolf, and then you disappeared without a trace. So, I suspect you were caught up in it. With no news of your death or appearance, it’s likely you were detained. After receiving your message, I became even more certain of this. Extracting you from Chu Yichen’s grasp is difficult. It’s not so much the act of intervention but the aftermath. Even if I manage it cleanly and he finds nothing, it’s easy for him to guess that the Sheng family is behind it.”

He looked at Chu Yunhan with a smile and said, “The Sheng family is in K City. The foundation is not yet stable. Dad warned us not to make enemies, yet I risked being hunted down by Dad and Chu the Second Master for you. Shouldn’t I ask for some reward?”

       “What do you want?”

“You should know what I want.”

“…” Chu Yunhan avoided his gaze for a long time and said softly, “I’m really not…not gay…”

“You’ve escaped from the Chu family, but it will be hard for you to stay in K City. With Chu Yichen coverage all over the city, there won’t be any other safe place for you. Except with me.” Sheng Ming folded the handkerchief and put it in his hand, “I won’t deny that I’m taking advantage of the situation because I’ve never been a good person. I just know that this is the only and best chance for you to agree. Ever since we met three years ago, I’ve been waiting for this opportunity. I even volunteered to transfer to K City for you. If you agree, I’ll take you away from here—whether you want to go up north or abroad, it’s entirely up to you.”

Yes. Chu Yunhan knew Sheng the fifth’s thoughts clearly, and he was well aware of his preferences. During that chaotic first encounter, he had nearly been pinned down to the bed. He had kicked him to the ground, and from that fight, they had somehow become friends. Though they were called friends, Chu Yunhan still felt somewhat afraid of him. The way he looked at him was too intense and sometimes even made him feel as if he were stripped bare, so he later intentionally distanced himself from him.

He asked for help at this time because there was no way out and only this person could help him.

And the one that Sheng the fifth wanted—was him.

Men and men…he couldn’t accept it. But there was no other way now; he didn’t want to be locked up and waiting to die again. The only option was to agree first, run away from Chu Yichen and then make plans.

“Okay, I promise you.” Chu Yunhan said without confidence.

Sheng the Fifth seemed to have guessed that he would agree and smiled. He hooked his tie with his fingers, brought his face close to him, and said softly, “Then, be sure to pay a deposit first.” After that, he put his lips to his and opened his mouth to wrap his tongue.

Chapter 52

Towards the end of the week, Zhan Pengcheng took advantage of his rare lack of work schedule to take the family out for another meal.

Today, he didn’t drive and instead took a cab so that he could have a drink with Pei Qing in the evening.

Pei Qing was fine with it, but when he heard Zhan Pengcheng say that he wanted to drink, he could not help asking, “Uncle, do you want to drink more?” He felt that Zhan Pengcheng drank too much alcohol every day at social gatherings outside, and it might be bad for his health.

Zhan Pengcheng said, “Of course I have to drink. Why? Don’t you want to drink with Uncle?”

Pei Qing could only smile and responded, “Then I will definitely accompany you.”

That night, Zhan Pengcheng drank a lot of wine. He said that it was mainly because he was in a good mood. While drinking, he stretched out a hand and pressed it on Pei Qing’s shoulder, saying, “You are really a good person, xiao Qing.”

Although Pei Qing drank, he was still sober. He smiled and did not speak.

Zhan Pengcheng said, “Yangyang is really well-behaved.”

Pei Qing nodded and said, “Yes.”

Zhan Pengcheng said in a low voice, leaning close to Pei Qing, sighing, “It’s just that I’m too busy at work and don’t have enough time to take care of him.”

“It can’t be helped.” Pei Qing knew that Zhan Pengcheng was very busy and tired. With such a big family, two children who were still in school, and a mother who was in poor health, he had to shoulder all the burdens.

Zhan Pengcheng usually didn’t say these words, but today after drinking and feeling that Pei Qing was already an adult, he couldn’t help but confide a few words, “Weiguang doesn’t play with him either. I’ve told him many times, but he’s still so irresponsible even though he’s already in college.”

Pei Qing glanced at Zhan Weiyang and saw that Zhan Weiyang was peeling shrimp shells obediently. He whispered to Zhan Pengcheng, “Weiguang is actually very good to Yangyang, but he just doesn’t like to express it.”

Zhan Pengcheng said, “I know, but his brother doesn’t know. You see, Yangyang doesn’t like Weiguang and likes to play with you.”

Pei Qing didn’t say anything. “Speaking of this,” Zhan Pengcheng raised his glass, “Come, today, your uncle must give you a toast.”

Pei Qing quickly raised his glass and said, “Uncle, you are too kind.”

Zhan Pengcheng said, “I know that during the two or three months since you came here, Yangyang has caused you a lot of trouble, and you have taken care of Yangyang a lot. Your uncle is really grateful to you, and I don’t know what I can do for you.”

Pei Qing said, “No worries about that. We are all family.”

Zhan Pengcheng sighed, “Yes, family. You are only three years older than Weiguang, but your personality is much calmer than his.”

Pei Qing said, “He has just entered college. The only difference between him and me is the social experience of college. It’s normal.”

Zhan Pengcheng laughed when he heard it, and couldn’t help patting Pei Qing’s shoulder with his hand, “Uncle likes you too much.”

       Pei Qing smiled lightly.

When they returned home after dinner, Zhan Pengcheng was drunk. This time he was really drunk. He held Pei Qing’s shoulders all the way from the private room to the restaurant door and chatted with him incoherently. He talked for a long time but couldn’t say a word clearly.

Zhan Weiyang looked at Zhan Pengcheng unhappily and said, “Dad, you’ve drunk too much.”

Zhan Pengcheng heard it, turned around to find Zhan Weiyang, and suddenly seemed surprised. He said, “Yangyang, how did you grow up so big secretly?” He stretched out his hand and pinched Zhan Weiyang’s face.

Drunk people didn’t know the severity of the situation. Zhan Weiyang screamed when he was pinched, and when Zhan Pengcheng let go of his hand, Zhan Weiyang found that his face was pinched red.

Pei Qing called a car when they went back. He first called a car for Zhan Weiyang to accompany his grandmother and Auntie Luo back, and he called another car to help Zhan Pengcheng get in.

Zhan Pengcheng squinted his eyes and raised his head. After a while, he leaned towards Pei Qing again and said in a low voice, “I have no choice. If I don’t make more money, what will happen to Yangyang in the future? Who should I leave him to after I’m gone? Is there any girl willing to marry him?”

Pei Qing glanced at Zhan Pengcheng and said softly, “Uncle, don’t worry, someone will take care of him.”

Zhan Pengcheng probably didn’t hear it.

Back home, Zhan Weiyang and Pei Qing helped Zhan Pengcheng to his room together. Zhan Pengcheng was already drunk and almost unconscious. As soon as he lay on the bed, he closed his eyes and began to snore.

Pei Qing stood at the end of the bed and helped him take off his shoes. He looked up and saw Zhan Weiyang standing at the head of the bed, gently patting Zhan Pengcheng’s face with his hands and calling him, “Dad? Dad?”

“Don’t bother him,” Pei Qing said, “Let him sleep.”

Zhan Weiyang turned his head to look at Pei Qing, then looked at Zhan Pengcheng worriedly and said to him, “Dad, you drank too much.”

       Zhan Pengcheng was still snoring.

Pei Qing looked at Zhan Pengcheng lying on the bed and said to Zhan Weiyang, “Help your dad take off his clothes and pants, I’ll get a towel to wipe his face, okay?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

Pei Qing entered the bathroom inside Zhan Pengcheng’s room. He looked at the towels hanging on the wall and didn’t know which one was which. He just picked the one that looked the cleanest, wet it with hot water and wrung it dry.

When he came back to the room, he saw Zhan Weiyang struggling to help Zhan Pengcheng take off his trousers, saying with difficulty, “Dad, you can’t drink so much in the future.”

Pei Qing came to help Zhan Weiyang, took off Zhan Pengcheng’s trousers, opened the quilt to cover him, and then wiped his face with a towel. When Pei Qing put the towel back in the bathroom, washed it and hung it up before coming out, he saw Zhan Weiyang still standing by the bed, looking at Zhan Pengcheng worriedly. He walked over and said, “It’s okay, uncle is asleep.”

Zhan Weiyang looked up at Pei Qing. Pei Qing patted his shoulder, “Let’s go out and let him sleep.”

Zhan Weiyang followed Pei Qing out, and saw Pei Qing gently close the door, and then said, “I’m a little scared.”

Pei Qing turned around and looked down at him, “What are you afraid of?”

Zhan Weiyang shook his head, “I don’t know.”

Pei Qing knew that he was still a child and comforted him, “It’s really okay. Your dad is just drunk. He will be fine tomorrow morning when he sobers up.”

After that, Pei Qing planned to go back to his room. He walked to the door and found that Zhan Weiyang was still following him closely, so he turned back and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him and asked, “Why aren’t you drunk?”

Pei Qing bent down and said to him softly, “I’m drunk too, but not as drunk as your dad.”

Zhan Weiyang got close to him and smelled it.

Pei Qing asked, “Do you smell alcohol?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

Pei Qing asked him again, “Does it smell bad?”

Zhan Weiyang lowered his head, hesitated for a moment and said, “No.”

Pei Qing smiled, suddenly held up Zhan Weiyang’s face, kissed him hard, and said when he let go, “It’s good that it doesn’t.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him nervously, with his hands behind his back and scratching his fingers hard, and said, “Can I sleep with you tonight?”

Pei Qing glanced in the direction of Zhan Pengcheng’s room. Although the door was tightly closed, it was always unclear whether it would be opened from the inside at the next moment, so he said, “No, go back to sleep by yourself. Be good.”

After speaking, Pei Qing turned around and wanted to go back to the room. At this time, he felt someone grabbing his clothes. He turned around and saw Zhan Weiyang looking up at him.

Zhan Weiyang seemed to have mustered up the courage and said, “Then can I sleep for a while? I will go back later, okay?”

Pei Qing was silent for a moment and whispered to him, “You take a shower and go back to the room, I will come to you later.” After speaking, he smiled and kissed Zhan Weiyang’s face and retreated to his room.

Chapter 51

Zhan Weiyang looked in Pei Qing’s direction and was about to run over when he suddenly heard Xie Ling calling his name again, “Zhan Weiyang.”

He stopped and looked at Xie Ling in confusion.

       Xie Ling said, “My bicycle—”

“Zhan Weiyang!” At this time, Zhan Weiyang heard Pei Qing calling him again.

Pei Qing put one arm on the edge of the car window, looking outside, and called his name in a tone he had never used before, which sounded a little cold and hard.

Zhan Weiyang was frightened, and he quickly turned around and ran towards Pei Qing.

Chen Youyou saw Zhan Weiyang leaving and hurriedly followed him. He walked behind Zhan Weiyang and saw Zhan Weiyang open the passenger door and sit in. After hesitating, he sat in the back seat himself.

After Zhan Weiyang got in the car, he still looked at Pei Qing with fear and trepidation, not knowing what he had done wrong.

Pei Qing’s tone softened, and he said to Zhan Weiyang, “Fasten your seat belt.”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t come back to his senses, Pei Qing unbuckled his own seat belt, leaned over, and helped Zhan Weiyang fasten his seat belt. He then turned around and said to Chen Youyou, “Youyou, we’ll take you home first.”

Actually, Chen Youyou was also a little stunned, mainly because he saw Zhan Weiyang in a panic and didn’t know what had happened. At this time, he heard Pei Qing talking to him and hurriedly responded, “Oh, okay.”

Pei Qing had driven to Chen Youyou’s house once, but after all, it was not a familiar place. Now that it was already dark, he took out his mobile phone, turned on the navigation, and drove all the way.

No one in the car spoke, and only the emotionless, cold female voice in the mobile phone navigation could be heard from time to time.

After sending Chen Youyou all the way to the gate of the neighbourhood, Pei Qing parked the car on the side of the road.

When Chen Youyou got out of the car, he took off his coat and gave it back to Pei Qing, standing on the side of the road and politely thanked him, “Thank you, older cousin.”

Pei Qing said to him, “Go back quickly, don’t catch a cold.”

Chen Youyou nodded, waved to Zhan Weiyang, and ran into the neighbourhood.

Then Pei Qing picked up his phone and reset the destination in the navigation.

Zhan Weiyang was still somewhat at a loss for words as he looked at him.

Pei Qing set the destination but did not start the car immediately. Instead, he turned to look at Zhan Weiyang and asked, “Is Yangyang hungry?”

Zhan Weiyang shook his head blankly.

Pei Qing asked him again, “Is it still cold?”

Zhan Weiyang continued to shake his head.

Pei Qing seemed to have noticed Zhan Weiyang’s mood, and he reached out and touched Zhan Weiyang’s head.

Zhan Weiyang rubbed his warm palm obediently and asked carefully, “Did I make you angry just now?”

       Pei Qing said, “No.”

Zhan Weiyang did not breathe a sigh of relief, and he insisted, “You are angry. Your tone was so fierce when you called my name.”

Pei Qing asked him gently, “Was it fierce?”

Zhan Weiyang nodded with a little grievance.

       Pei Qing said, “I’m sorry.”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I’m not angry with you.”

Pei Qing couldn’t help laughing when he heard it and said to Zhan Weiyang, “Actually, I wasn’t angry with you, I just wanted to shout at you to come back soon.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him. Pei Qing said, “Did you hear me calling you to get in the car?”

Zhan Weiyang replied, “I heard it.”

Pei Qing nodded, “So I called you to get in the car, and you didn’t come. I was afraid that you would run away with others, and I am anxious.”

Zhan Weiyang said hurriedly, “I won’t run away with others.”

Pei Qing still had a faint smile in his eyes, and he asked, “Really?”

Zhan Weiyang nodded sincerely, “Yes, I will only follow you, don’t be mean to me.”

Pei Qing leaned back in the chair and thought carefully about his tone just now. In fact, he couldn’t say that he was mean. He just wanted to call back Zhan Weiyang’s attention, so his voice was a little loud and his tone seemed hurried. The most important thing was that he called Zhan Weiyang’s full name.

He knew why Zhan Weiyang was confused because even when he had just arrived at the Zhan family, and the two met for the first time, he was very polite and called him ‘Weiyang’ instead of ‘Zhan Weiyang’.

It was just that he didn’t expect Zhan Weiyang to be so nervous.

He then said again, “I’m sorry, I won’t be mean to you anymore, okay?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Okay.”

As Pei Qing drove back, the sky, which had been gloomy all night, began to drizzle again. He turned on the wipers, slowed down and drove home slowly. When passing the brightly lit streets on the way, he asked Zhan Weiyang if he wanted to have a midnight snack.

Zhan Weiyang said, “No, I want to sleep.”

When Pei Qing parked the car as they got home, he found that the car that Zhan Pengcheng usually drove out was already parked in the garage. Zhan Pengcheng had come back early today, which was rare.

Pei Qing and Zhan Weiyang entered the house and saw Zhan Pengcheng standing in the living room on the first floor, holding a cup and drinking water. When he saw them coming back, he put down the cup in a hurry and asked, “Did Yangyang get wet in the rain?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “No.”

Pei Qing continued, “I saw that the temperature had dropped, so I drove to pick him up and brought him a coat.”

Zhan Pengcheng said, “Oh,” and said, “Thank you so much, xiao Qing.”

Pei Qing said, “No problem, Uncle.”

Zhan Pengcheng said to Zhan Weiyang, “Then go upstairs and take a shower and go to bed.”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded, “Okay.”

After taking a shower, Zhan Weiyang sat on the bed in his room, thinking about what he had said to Chen Youyou in the afternoon and seriously struggling with whether he really had to wait until he was 18 to be able to do anything.

His toes were red from the hot water, and he stepped on the bed, opening and closing them forcefully. He thought for a moment, reached out to pick up his pyjamas, and looked at his thin chest. His skin was still white, and it was slightly red after taking a hot bath. He stood up on the bed and tried to take off his pants, but before he could do so, he heard a knock on the door.

It must be Zhan Pengcheng at this time.

Zhan Weiyang quickly pulled up his pants, sat cross-legged on the bed, and said, “Come in.”

Zhan Pengcheng opened the door and came in, asking, “Yangyang is still awake?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Yes.”

Usually, Zhan Pengcheng would stand for a while before leaving. Today, he walked to the bed and sat down, asking Zhan Weiyang, “Does Pei Qing gege take good care of you?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Yes.”

Zhan Pengcheng thought for a while and said, “Then Daddy will treat him to a meal some other day. I am usually busy with work, and I feel that I have troubled him a lot.”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded, “Okay.”

Zhan Pengcheng asked him, “Do you get along well with Pei Qing gege?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Yes.”

Zhan Pengcheng raised his hand, patted his head, and said with relief, “It’s must be because my Yangyang is so well-behaved. Everyone likes you.”

Zhan Weiyang thought for a while and said, “Zhan Weiguang doesn’t like me.”

“How dare he dislike you!” Zhan Pengcheng deliberately pretended to be mad, “Dad will spank him!”

       Zhan Weiyang smiled.

Zhan Pengcheng said, “Okay, go to bed, Dad is going to bed too.”

Zhan Weiyang waved to him, “Good night, Dad.”

When Zhan Pengcheng left the room, Zhan Weiyang sat cross-legged on the bed quietly for a few minutes, climbed down from the bed, and walked outside in slippers.

The lights in the corridor were turned off, and the door to the balcony was also closed. The weather was bad today, so the light was very dim, and even the shadows of people could hardly be seen clearly.

Zhan Weiyang originally wanted to find Pei Qing, but when he walked to the corridor and heard the sound of rain outside, he suddenly remembered his flower pot.

So he walked to the balcony, opened the door and stood at the door, seeing the raindrops falling down. The ground of the entire balcony had been soaked for a long time, reflecting the dim light.

His flower pot was placed in the middle, and it seemed to have caught a lot of rainwater because of the rain—he could hear the sound of raindrops falling into it.

Zhan Weiyang thought if he stayed here in the future, he would be exposed to the rain if it rained, and no one would come to hold an umbrella for him. Although he might not be afraid of the rain at that time, he was still very pitiful.

Or he could put the flower pot in Pei Qing’s room. Zhan Weiyang suddenly had this idea. He was excited for a moment but soon thought that Pei Qing would not live in his house forever, and when Pei Qing moved away in the future, he would be left alone as a tree in an empty room.

At that moment, Zhan Weiyang felt very sad.

Chapter 13

Jiang Tongyan’s right eyelid twitched crazily.

He frantically recalled whether the twitching of his right eye was for disaster or wealth.

He thought to himself: Do you think I care about your dirty money? What could I even do with that little amount? Just look at your face—does it look like you’re willingly giving me that money? Keep your filthy money to yourself!

But just as he was about to say this, a sudden inspiration came to his mind, and he smiled slightly, reaching out to take the card while saying hypocritically, “I didn’t expect you to be so nice.”

He pinched Qian Xiaoke’s bank card with his index finger and thumb and pulled it for a while, but it didn’t follow.

Qian Xiaoke couldn’t bear to give it up!

He frowned, bit his lips, and stared at his bank card. The strength in his hand didn’t decrease at all, and even the other hand came up.

“…Friend, do you want to give it to me or not?” On the roadside, two men were fighting for a bank card.

Qian Xiaoke was heartbroken and almost cried bitterly. He finally understood that this was the disaster brought by desire.

He was wrong. He was wrong from the beginning. If he hadn’t been drunk that night, he wouldn’t have gotten together with Jiang Tongyan. If he hadn’t gotten together with Jiang Tongyan, he wouldn’t have indirectly…or directly caused Jiang Tongyan to become impotent. If Jiang Tongyan hadn’t become impotent, he wouldn’t have lost all his wealth…

       It’s retribution.

The retribution of life came so quickly.

Qian Xiaoke let go, like a heartbroken mother watching her precious child being taken away. He stared at the bank card, his eyes glistening with tears like the dew on a lupine flower.

Jiang Tongyan took the card and asked with a smile, “How much money is in it? Look at you… Wait, you really cried?”

Jiang Tongyan was startled. He just wanted to tease this kid; why did he cry?

Which proper man cried at the drop of a hat?

He didn’t dare to say this for fear that the other party would cry even harder.

“No,” Qian Xiaoke rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, “You are the one crying.”

Jiang Tongyan was a little panicked. He couldn’t stand it. If he made someone cry on the street, people who didn’t know would think he was bullying them.

He quickly stuffed the card into the small pocket of Qian Xiaoke’s schoolbag, “Take it back, take it back. I really can’t afford to mess with you.”

“No.” Qian Xiaoke took out the bank card again and put it directly into Jiang Tongyan’s trouser pocket, “I said I would treat your illness.”

“…What you said reminds me of my dad.”

Jiang Tongyan took the card out of his pocket, unzipped Qian Xiaoke’s schoolbag, put it in, and then zipped it up again for him.

       “Oh, I don’t…”

“Don’t move!” Jiang Tongyan shouted, scaring Qian Xiaoke, “I was just teasing you, but you took it seriously. Who wants your money? Don’t I have it myself?”

Qian Xiaoke muttered, “Yours is yours, and mine is… for your medical treatment.”

“…Qian Xiaoke, if you dare to mention medical treatment again… You don’t believe I will stuff you into the sewer?”

Qian Xiaoke looked up at him and snorted disdainfully, “That’s illegal!”

       “Killing people is illegal!”

       “Have you killed anyone?”

       Jiang Tongyan: “…No.”

Qian Xiaoke was stunned, then squatted on the side of the road and laughed.

Jiang Tongyan stood there with a dark face looking at him. When Qian Xiaoke finished laughing, he looked up and said to Jiang Tongyan, “You are so funny.”

“You are the funny one,” Jiang Tongyan bent down slightly and poked his forehead with his finger, “Let’s forget about today’s matter. You are not allowed to mention it in the future. You are not allowed to mention it to anyone. Do you hear me?”

       Qian Xiaoke nodded obediently.

“If you dare to tell others, I will…”

       “Stuff me into the sewer.”

Jiang Tongyan hummed with satisfaction, straightened up, and looked down at Qian Xiaoke, “Okay, kneel down.”

“…You are crazy!” Qian Xiaoke stood up, but because he stood up too hard, he suddenly felt dizzy and leaned directly into Jiang Tongyan’s arms.

Jiang Tongyan: “…What are you doing? Trying to scam me again?”

“It’s okay, it’s okay, stay calm and don’t panic!” Qian Xiaoke was really dizzy. He had low blood pressure and low blood sugar. He stood up too quickly just now, and his blood pressure couldn’t keep up with his agile body. “Don’t panic!”

His vision went black, and the sky spun around for several seconds.

Jiang Tongyan managed to stay composed, spreading his arms behind him and using his chest to support Qian Xiaoke. His face was written all over with the expression: Nothing to do with me, he’s just faking it!

After a few seconds, Qian Xiaoke’s vision was bright again.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay.” After Qian Xiaoke recovered, he turned his head to look at him, “What’s with your posture?”

“I’m a mysophobe,” Jiang Tongyan said, “Please get out of the way and stay one meter away from me.”

Jiang Tongyan was really scared. Whenever he met this guy, he would remember the scene that day when he couldn’t get hard no matter how hard they tried.

Other people’s intimate encounters were always filled with passion and tenderness, but when it came to him, all that was left was awkward tension and a mental stampede of frustration.

“You don’t have mysophobia,” Qian Xiaoke stood up straight and took a half step back obediently, but he continued to complain, “I saw a mysophobia person come to see Chairman Cheng before, and you are not.”

Jiang Tongyan looked at him sideways impatiently, “Don’t change the subject.”

Qian Xiaoke tilted his head and looked at him, “Oh, then continue, what were we just talking about?”

       What were we talking about?

       Jiang Tongyan also forgot.

He waved his hand, “Forget it. I’ll go insane if I say one more word to you.”

He glanced at the time and prepared to go back to the hotel.

“Chairman Jiang,” Qian Xiaoke had a flash of inspiration, “Are you going back to rest? Go back to the hotel?”

Jiang Tongyan almost covered his chest and yelled, ‘What are you going to do to me?’ on the side of the road in front of everyone, but fortunately, he controlled himself.

       “…What are you planning?”

Today, when those colleagues gossiped, they mentioned that the hotel where Jiang Tongyan was staying was not far from Qian Xiaoke’s home. If he could get a ride back, he would not only not have to squeeze into the subway but also save a few dollars.

Qian Xiaoke carried his small schoolbag and looked at Jiang Tongyan obediently.

When he was obedient, Jiang Tongyan felt a chill on his back and always felt that this person was holding back his fart.

“If you have something to say, please say it. Don’t be like this.”

“Chairman Jiang, you are such a good person.” Qian Xiaoke smiled at him, his eyes curved, and a row of white and neat teeth flashed simultaneously.

       “…Are you schizophrenic?”

“Chairman Jiang, you are handsome and kind.”

       “You are schizophrenic.”

“Chairman Jiang, you are such a kind person. Surely, you’ll give me a lift, right?”

“Oh, so you have something to ask of me.”

“Chairman Jiang, you know, I am a poor little worker. I squeeze into the subway and transfer back and forth several times a day. Since the subway price has increased, the cost of travel has increased, and my life has become increasingly difficult.”

Jiang Tongyan listened to him talking nonsense, and he almost hurt himself by holding back his laughter.

“Where is your home? What if it was not in the same way?”

“It’s the same way, it’s definitely the same way!” Qian Xiaoke said, “Just go where you want to go; wherever you go, I will go there!”

“Really?” Jiang Tongyan wanted to tease her again, he raised his eyebrows, “Do you know where I’m going?”

“Where?” Qian Xiaoke blinked his big eyes and looked at him innocently.

Jiang Tongyan smiled slightly and poked Qian Xiaoke’s heart with his finger, “I want to go to your heart.”

Chapter 6

The air in the old house had the faint smell of sandalwood, making it easy to relax. The sound of cicadas outside the window was a little noisy, but it easily brought him back to the past. Lying on the bed, many old things from his youth came to mind. He fell asleep thinking about it, and when he woke up, it was already sunrise.

He slowly got out of bed. When the middle-aged man waiting in the hall saw him coming downstairs, he nodded and greeted, “Young Master Yun.”

“Du Chuan.” Chu Yunhan searched his mind briefly before recalling this name, “Long time no see.”

Du Chuan was the housekeeper personally selected by Chu Yu. He had been with Chu Yichen since he was young and was responsible for taking care of all his daily life. In his impression, this man always had a gentle and refined demeanour, never lost his temper, and was always calm and composed. He did things in a very orderly manner, almost never making any mistakes.

“Yes. Are you having breakfast now?”

“Yeah.” He responded and sat down at the dining table.

Plain porridge, small side dishes, accompanied by two or three types of Chinese dim sum—these were still the old man’s habits. He ate slowly and methodically, biting into the shrimp filling, and asked, “Is this still Aunt Wang’s cooking?”

       “Yes.”

“Have you eaten yet? Why don’t we sit down and have something?”

       “I’ve eaten; enjoy your meal.”

The attempt to get closer had failed. Chu Yunhan pretended to ask casually, “How has Jiahui been lately?”

“I’m not sure about Miss Zhou’s situation.”

“Has she come here to see me?”

       “No.”

He frowned, “No? Not even once?”

       “Yes.”

How could that be? Jiahui usually loved inviting him out for meals, but it had been three months without any contact—but not even once had she reached out to him?

“Did Chu Yichen say something to her?” Chu Yunhan raised his eyebrows, “What lies did he make up to deceive her?”

       “I don’t know.”

He said angrily, “Interesting. You spend every day with that master of yours, but you don’t know anything?”

Du Chuan remained silent, his expression still impeccably polite, leaving no room for criticism.

Chu Yunhan knew that there was no point in arguing with him, so he put down his spoon and said, “Arrange a car for me. I want to go out.”

“The young master has told me that you need to stay at home for the time being.”

He was startled, “…What do you mean?”

“Without the Young Master’s consent, I cannot arrange for you to go out.”

Chu Yunhan asked in disbelief, “He wants to lock me here?”

No response was equivalent to a tacit admission.

“Ha, ‘lose everything’, that’s what it is.” He angrily kicked the table leg, trying to calm his emotions, “Did he say how long he would lock me up?”

       “No.”

“I want to see him. Where is he?”

       “The Young Master is out.”

       “When will he come back?”

       “I don’t know.”

“…” He sat dejectedly for a while and said gloomily, “Let me know when he gets back. That’s not too much to ask, is it?”

“Alright, Young Master Yun.” The butler responded politely.

His phone had been taken away by the bodyguards the night he was caught. There was no TV signal in the room, and the curved display screen could only be used for playing single-player games. Although he was allowed to move freely within the mansion, the scope of his movement was limited to his room and some ‘accessible’ common areas, such as dining rooms, libraries, and hot spring pools. When he tried to enter the computer control room, he was stopped coldly by the bodyguard. Du Chuan told him tactfully that permission was required to enter the computer room.

Who’s approval was needed? It’s obvious. That person had completely confined him, cutting off all possible connections with the outside world. Chu Yunhan patiently waited for a full three days, but Chu Yichen still hadn’t returned. When he asked Du Chuan, the only response he got was—Young Master was busy.

Yeah right. What was he busy with? He just wanted to avoid seeing him.

At first, he could pass the time playing games and reading books, but as time went on, everything started to feel meaningless. After all, he had spent the past few years living a carefree life, travelling, vacationing, horseback riding, skiing, playing golf, racing cars, chasing young models, and partying in nightclubs—living it up. Now, confined to this small space with no entertainment, it was unbearably frustrating, and what made him even more anxious was the lack of news about Jiahui and his mother.

Chu Yunhan paced around his room like an ant on a hot pan every day. As the days went by, his anxiety continued to churn and was forcibly suppressed, making it a real torment. With half a month passing and Chu Yichen showing no intention of appearing, he steeled himself and began a hunger strike.

Sure enough, on the third day of his hunger strike, when his legs were weak from hunger, Du Chuan came upstairs and asked him to come down, saying that Chu Yichen was back.

The man was wearing a dark brown silk home suit and was sitting on the large sofa in the study room reading documents. Hei Yu stood behind him, bowing and talking to him from time to time.

Chu Yunhan was impatient. He sat on the opposite sofa and asked bluntly, “How long do you plan to lock me up?”

The man flipped through the documents in his hand and said, without even raising his head, “Why? Are you tired of living here?”

How could you not get tired? There was nothing in this miserable place. He kept his words in his heart and said in a low voice, “I want to go out to see Jiahui. You can also send someone to follow me.” After saying that, seeing that the other party did not react, he quickly added a guarantee, “I won’t cause you trouble.”

“Jiahui went to Northern Europe to relax and won’t be back for the time being.”

Chu Yunhan was stunned, “Why would she go there?”

Chu Yichen raised his eyes and looked at him lightly without answering.

That look made his heart pound. It took him a long time to figure it out, and his face became hot. The purpose of sending Jiahui far away was to prevent her from getting involved in the rebellion he started. Not only would it be embarrassing for her to be in the middle of a brotherly rivalry, but it could also be dangerous if things got out of hand. He had vaguely thought of this at the time, but the situation was urgent, and he was led by the grey wolf half-heartedly, so there was no way he could take care of so much. Chu Yichen obviously considered the problem much more carefully than he did.

       “Then…when will she come back?”

“You don’t need to know.” The man cut off the conversation, “You and she will never have the chance to meet again.”

Chu Yunhan sat stiffly, his throat dry, “You want to lock me up for the rest of your life?”

“Now you understand what it means to have nothing?”

He felt a chill all over as if he had fallen into an ice cellar, cold from head to toe. This guy was serious. When they gave him the choice of life or death, they had already prepared for this, intending to imprison him for life.

Was this what the so-called heir’s education has produced? So cruel.

What was the point of living as a prisoner, even if he lived a long life with good clothes and fine food? But when the words ‘Then just kill me’ came to his lips, he couldn’t say them out. He was afraid that the person’s understatement of ‘Okay’ would really turn him into a cold corpse. He was afraid of death.

He wanted to live; even if locked up, he still wanted to live.

       How sad.

He hated himself for being so weak and stupid.

His eyes turned red unknowingly. Chu Yunhan stood up and walked out. A man’s deep voice came from behind him, “If you think the hunger strike is interesting, feel free to continue.”

He paused, gritted his teeth and clenched his fists.

You wanted me to commit suicide? But I won’t go along with your wishes.

He walked out of the study quickly and said to Du Chuan in the hall, “I’m hungry. Prepare a meal for me.”

The imprisonment continued, and Chu Yunhan’s mind was filled with thoughts of how to escape except for eating and sleeping every day. After waiting for a full week, he finally got the chance. Early that morning, Du Chuan informed him that he was temporarily staying in his room and was not allowed to go out. He also sent two bodyguards to guard the door. He knew that someone he knew must have come to the old house.

When he was a child, the old man also set up curfews. He would often sneak out in the middle of the night to join his friends for fun and practice his ability to climb the balcony and jump into the water pipe. Now he rummaged through the box and found the old rope he had used. He crouched on the balcony, looked around carefully, and, taking advantage of the moment when no one was watching, swiftly slid down the pipe.

After having lived there for so long and scouting the area several times in recent days, he carefully made his way forward, hiding and avoiding detection. He had been hiding behind a shelf in the east wing storage room for a long time before finally hearing sounds from the garden outside. Peering through a small window, he saw the back of someone in a pink dress, and his heart leapt with joy, almost causing him to knock over the shelf. Once he managed to calm himself down, he crouched by the window and imitated a few bird calls.

This was a game they used to play when they were kids. He would spend all day playing and running around with Chu Minran, causing a ruckus in the courtyard. Chu Yichen, with his calm demeanour, mostly spent his time reading but would occasionally join in their games. Zhou Jiahui was the daughter of the little brother of Chu Yunhan’s mother, Zhou Yuran. With the younger sibling often bedridden due to poor health, Zhou Yuran would frequently bring her to stay with them. The little girl was very cute and won the old man’s affection, and also repeatedly called him ‘Yunhan ge’. Because she was young, she could never find them during hide-and-seek and would end up crying in frustration. Chu Yunhan would mimic bird calls to draw her attention so she could find him, and then he would help her look for the others.

This sound was like a secret code between the two of them. When they grew up, they always liked to joke like this. As soon as he called twice, Zhou Jiahui turned around in surprise. It took her a long time to see him through the small window.

Chu Yunhan hurriedly made a silent gesture and winked at her desperately. Jiahui came out to answer the phone and was very surprised to see him, but she saw that he looked anxious and did not look like he was playing around. Then she avoided others and quietly entered the storage room.

“Why are you here? Yichen ge just said that you…” She was interrupted before she could finish her words. Chu Yunhan said anxiously, “I don’t have time to explain. Lend me your mobile phone.”

When he got the phone, his hands were shaking. He hurriedly pressed a series of numbers and sent a message with only four words.

       “Help me. Chu Yunhan.”

Chapter 50

Zhan Weiyang was very upset that Chen Youyou called him crazy. He had always thought that Chen Youyou was the person who understood him best in the world.

As the weather grew colder, Zhan Weiyang’s points were being deducted more and more frequently. Sometimes, he felt so dazed and confused that he couldn’t remember if his points had been deducted the previous night, let alone calculate how many points had been taken away.

It always felt like that day was getting closer and closer.

Two weeks before the midterm exam, the homeroom teacher required all students to stay in school for evening self-study.

Because of the evening self-study, Zhan Weiyang didn’t go home after class in the afternoon, and he also ate dinner in the school cafeteria.

That afternoon, the wind suddenly picked up, and the autumn temperatures started to drop rapidly. Although the sun was visible around noon, by the time the students were heading to the cafeteria for lunch, it had become so cold that they were all shivering.

Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou squeezed together and walked towards the cafeteria.

Chen Youyou complained quietly, “W-hy is it suddenly, cold?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I don’t know.”

During the meal, Chen Youyou said, “It’s too cold, I, don’t want to go to, self-study.”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I don’t want to go either.”

He didn’t have much time left, but he still had to stay at school for evening self-study sessions and couldn’t go back to be with Pei Qing. This made him very unhappy.

When he was younger and felt unhappy, he would sulk and lose his temper. Zhan Weiguang would tell him that as he grew older, there would be more things to be unhappy about and it was useless to lose his temper.

Now, he began to realise it gradually. In fact, if he thought about it carefully, it wasn’t that there were more unhappy things as he grew older, but rather that it became easier to feel unhappy about many things as he grew older. If only he didn’t have to grow up.

As he thought of this, Zhan Weiyang suddenly remembered another important thing. He held the chopsticks in his hand and bumped them on the edge of the plate. He raised his head and said, “No.”

Chen Youyou was gnawing on a chicken leg, his mouth was greasy, and he looked at him inexplicably.

Zhan Weiyang said nervously, “I forgot something.”

Chen Youyou looked puzzled, lowered his eyes to look at the chicken leg, and continued to chew while asking him vaguely, “What?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I’m afraid I won’t be able to wait until I’m 18 years old.”

Chen Youyou asked curiously, “What? Will, you die?”

Zhan Weiyang was a little angry, “I told you last time, I’m going to become a tree.”

“Oh—” Chen Youyou trailed off. He first chewed off a large piece of meat and swallowed it, and then said slowly, “N-not possible.”

Zhan Weiyang said, “You don’t remember what I said to you.”

Chen Youyou said, “You, talk about, those crazy things, who can, remember?”

Zhan Weiyang stayed a little unhappy until they finished their meal and squeezed together to go back to the classroom. Chen Youyou suddenly remembered and asked him, “What are you going to do at the age of 18?”

After asking, he didn’t hear Zhan Weiyang’s answer. He turned his head to look at him and saw that he looked listless.

He nudged Zhan Weiyang with his elbow, “Say it.”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I can’t say it, I can’t wait any longer anyway.”

Chen Youyou thought about it and said to him, “Then, just go ahead, and do it.”

Zhan Weiyang turned his head and looked at him.

Chen Youyou said, “There’s nothing, that can only, be done at the age, of eighteen and, definitely can’t be, done at the, age of seventeen.”

Zhan Weiyang asked in confusion, “Nothing?”

Chen Youyou thought about it carefully, “N-nothing.”

Zhan Weiyang wanted to say ‘drinking’ but remembered that he had already drunk, and it seemed that there was indeed nothing that had to wait until the age of eighteen. Why did he insist on waiting until the age of eighteen? At that time, he had already been planted in a flowerpot and could not do anything he wanted to do.

He had a strange feeling of sudden clarity, and took a deep breath and felt cool from his nose to his lungs.

Chen Youyou thought his expression was strange and said, “Y-you look weird.”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I’m not, I look normal, I’m not crazy.” At this point, he felt that he needed to emphasise to Chen Youyou, “If you say I’m crazy again, I’ll be really angry.”

       Chen Youyou replied indifferently, “Okay.”

Zhan Weiyang was very serious, “Just like I won’t call you stutter.”

Chen Youyou snorted, indicating that he knew. But after he and Zhan Weiyang squeezed together and returned to the classroom, he felt something was wrong. He thought about it and realised that he was really stuttering, and Zhan Weiyang was not really crazy. There was no correlation between that, no?

Maybe Zhan Weiyang also felt that he was really a little crazy. Chen Youyou thought so and didn’t tell Zhan Weiyang.

During the evening self-study in the classroom, everyone closed the doors and windows. It was okay for students in the same class to squeeze together so they didn’t feel too cold. But it rained outside at some point, and the temperature dropped sharply. When the evening self-study class was over, the rain had stopped, but the temperature had already dropped.

Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou walked to the school gate together.

Chen Youyou said that the weather was too cold, and he didn’t want to ride his bike or take the bus. He suggested taking a taxi home instead.

Zhan Weiyang said, “Then I’ll go to the bus station.” As soon as he finished speaking, he saw a familiar figure at the school gate.

“Ah!” At that moment, Zhan Weiyang really couldn’t control his emotions and cried out. Without thinking, he immediately left Chen Youyou and ran towards the person at the school gate, saying happily, “Qing ge, why are you here?”

Pei Qing looked at Zhan Weiyang, stretched out a hand to him, showed him a thick coat on his arm, and said, “I brought you clothes.”

Zhan Weiyang took a look at the coat. His nose was sore, and he couldn’t speak.

Pei Qing said, “Put on the coat first.” He picked up the coat, put it on Zhan Weiyang’s shoulders, and helped him put it on.

Chen Youyou came over at this time and said enviously, “Wow, older cousin, hel—.”

He wanted to say ‘hello’, but because of his stuttering, he paused between the two words ‘hello’. Pei Qing didn’t hear it all, so he directly replied, “Hello, Youyou.”

So Chen Youyou was forced to hold back the remaining ‘hello’.

Pei Qing looked at Chen Youyou and found that he was also wearing thin clothes. He asked, “Didn’t your parents send you any clothes?”

       Chen Youyou shook his head.

Pei Qing hesitated a little, and raised his hand to unzip his coat. He took off the coat warmed with his body temperature, handed it to Chen Youyou, and said, “Put it on.”

Chen Youyou was a little dazed and subconsciously took it and felt bad. He then said, “No, no, no need.” He was a little anxious, and his stuttering became worse.

Pei Qing smiled and said, “Put it on. I drove here to pick up Yangyang, so I’ll give you a ride home as well.”

Chen Youyou hesitated. He handed the coat back to Pei Qing and said, “Really, no need. I’ll go get a taxi.”

Pei Qing took the coat and, this time opened it directly to put it on Chen Youyou’s back just like he did when he helped Zhan Weiyang put on clothes. He then said, “Wait for me here. I’ll drive the car over.”

Chen Youyou then said, “Thank you, older cousin.”

After Pei Qing left, Chen Youyou zipped up the coat and looked up to see Zhan Weiyang looking at him with resentment. He was startled and asked, “W-what’s wrong?”

Zhan Weiyang reached out to pull his coat and said, “Give me this coat.”

Chen Youyou didn’t know what he was doing, so he subconsciously covered his collar and stepped back, “Why?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I’ll give you mine, and you give me the one on you!”

Chen Youyou didn’t understand. He wanted to ask what the difference was, but in a hurry, he couldn’t say the words in his mouth. He could only shout, “I don’t–-” and then stepped back until he hit something.

       Zhan Weiyang stopped in panic.

Chen Youyou turned back and saw that it was Xie Ling who passed by on a bicycle. The bicycle Xie Ling rode was knocked to one side.

Xie Ling stopped and looked at them.

Zhan Weiyang was a little afraid of him and stepped back half a step.

Xie Ling suddenly said to Zhan Weiyang, “Hey!”

Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou both stared at him.

       Xie Ling said, “My bicycle—”

Before he finished speaking, Pei Qing had already stopped by the roadside in her car, rolled down the window and shouted to Zhan Weiyang and the others, “Get in the car.”

The author has something to say:
I saw some comments in which readers thought Xie Ling was pitiful. Actually, Xie Ling doesn’t even like Zhan Weiyang, and he usually gets harassed more by various girls who secretly admire him, so he doesn’t feel like he is pitiful. He doesn’t even really think much about Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou…

Chapter 12

Jiang Tongyan said, “Qian Xiaoke, do you hate the rich?”

Qian Xiaoke glanced at him and answered seriously, “I don’t hate the rich, I just hate you.”

This sentence confused Jiang Tongyan, “Your logic doesn’t make sense, does it? Even if there’s a grudge, it should be me holding a grudge against you!”

Qian Xiaoke came closer and looked at Jiang Tongyan’s shirt carefully, making sure it was wiped clean, and then sat back.

“Why? Obviously I am more wronged.” Qian Xiaoke sat back down and continued eating his spicy hot pot. If he didn’t eat faster, the noodles would get soggy and ruin the taste. Then his 36 yuan would have been wasted!

Jiang Tongyan’s clothes were clean, and he returned to sit opposite Qian Xiaoke, “How dare you ask?”

Jiang Tongyan was now wondering if Qian Xiaoke had a flaw in his intelligence or a flaw in his worldview that he dared to actually ask him why! He was the one who wanted to ask why!

Qian Xiaoke didn’t listen to his words at all; his mind was full of: Eat quickly, eat quickly, it won’t taste good later!

Seeing him like this, Jiang Tongyan felt utterly helpless and thought to himself, fine, go ahead and eat. I’ll settle this with you once you’re done.

So, he just stared at Qian Xiaoke eating, and he laughed while staring at him. This kid’s eating style was really ugly, so ugly that he couldn’t look away.

Qian Xiaoke knew that this person was looking at him, and he was not used to this. Of course, no one could get used to being stared at with such an intense gaze while eating.

At first, Qian Xiaoke could still bear it because he felt that there was no need to be distracted by this person, but his patience was limited, and mascots also had tempers.

Qian Xiaoke looked up and said with an unhappy face, “Why are you so rude?”

“Hey, are you really lecturing me about manners now? Do you even have any?”

Qian Xiaoke curled his lips, “I do.”

He said seriously, “I just said thank you to the waiter. Did you say it?”

       “I said it.”

       “I didn’t hear it.”

“Just because you didn’t hear it, so it didn’t happen?” Jiang Tongyan laughed jokingly, “Your logic is really flawed.”

“Your logic is the one that’s flawed,” Qian Xiaoke waved his hand, “Wait a moment, let me finish eating before we continue this debate.”

He picked up a piece of potato chips and stuffed it into his mouth, saying, “When I was in college, I was on our school’s debate team!”

“Uh-huh? Have you won any awards in the competition?”

Qian Xiaoke glared at him and didn’t answer.

How could he possibly tell Jiang Tongyan that he was a substitute on the debate team—the kind that had never even been on stage?!

Of course, later he was ‘temporarily transferred’ to the basketball team to be a cheerleader, where he truly shined.

Seeing that he didn’t reply, Jiang Tongyan didn’t say anything more and continued to stare at Qian Xiaoke eating with a smile.

He found that Qian Xiaoke was really interesting, and worthy of being the ‘mascot’ of Cheng Sen’s company.

When Qian Xiaoke finally finished eating, he wiped his mouth and muttered, “It’s done. It’s all gone.”

Jiang Tongyan almost laughed out loud, then got up, walked to the cashier, and bought a bottle of Coke.

Qian Xiaoke was a little surprised. He didn’t expect this person to be so considerate. In just a moment, his view of Jiang Tongyan changed 180 degrees. He was suddenly a little touched and even wanted to be responsible for this person!

He sat there obediently, with his lips pursed, watching Jiang Tongyan come back with an iced Coke. He stretched out his hand to take it while smiling shyly, “Oh, it’s not necessary…”

However, before he finished speaking, he saw Jiang Tongyan standing in front of him, opening the Coke and drinking it.

“… Tsk.” I knew this person wouldn’t be so kind! Qian Xiaoke’s eyes were about to roll up to the sky.

Jiang Tongyan teased him deliberately, “What did you say about not necessary?”

“No, you are hallucinating.” Qian Xiaoke stood up angrily, holding his small schoolbag and preparing to leave.

“Sir, you took one less bottle of Coke.”

The waiter came over and put another bottle of Coke on their table.

Qian Xiaoke looked at the Coke on the table and then looked at Jiang Tongyan.

“Oh, yes, I was going to bring it back to drink.”

Qian Xiaoke took a deep breath and walked out of the spicy hot pot restaurant with a stride that showed he cared for no one.

Jiang Tongyan, who succeeded in his trick, laughed so hard that he almost got a stitch in the side and followed him out leisurely with two bottles of Coke.

“Hey!” Jiang Tongyan walked behind and shouted at Qian Xiaoke’s back.

He could tell from his back how angry the guy was at the moment, which was very funny.

Jiang Tongyan felt that he was a bit perverted now. He actually liked to tease such a little rabbit. He was so childish that he was just like a three-year-old child. If Shen Huiming saw him like this, he would probably laugh at him to death.

But Shen Huiming couldn’t see him now, so Jiang Tongyan planned to continue.

“Why are you running?” Jiang Tongyan said again, and this time, Qian Xiaoke turned around.

Qian Xiaoke stopped and turned to glare at him, “First! I didn’t run! I was angry! Second! My name is not Hey! I’m Qian Xiaoke!”

Jiang Tongyan’s right eyelid twitched. This sentence always seemed a little familiar. His eight-year-old niece seemed to have a similar line in an idol drama she watched a while ago.

Qian Xiaoke also watched idol dramas?

       It fitted with his persona.

“What are you laughing at?” Qian Xiaoke felt that Jiang Tongyan might not only be impotent but also have problems with his brain. If not, why would he stand here and laugh so weirdly? Even if he is handsome, he should still be sent to a mental hospital!

Qian Xiaoke said, “Are you a pig?”

“You are.” Jiang Tongyan handed him the unopened bottle of Coke, “Didn’t you eat all the food?”

Qian Xiaoke smiled proudly, “I refuse to eat food given with contempt, even if it leads me to this point!”

       “Ah?”

Jiang Tongyan’s Chinese level was really limited, and Qian Xiaoke suddenly said this, and he didn’t understand it at all.

“Uncultured.” Qian Xiaoke said, “I hate uneducated nouveau riche like you the most.”

After saying that, Qian Xiaoke felt happy, turned to the small supermarket next door, and bought himself a bottle of Coke that was exactly the same as the one in Jiang Tongyan’s hand.

Qian Xiaoke, “I have plenty of money!”

When he said this, he was very unconfident, so he turned around and ran away.

Jiang Tongyan was almost amused to death by him. How could there be such a funny person?

Was Qian Xiaoke only three years old this year?

A three-year-old child shouldn’t be so childish, right?

Sometimes, criticising others was a reflection of one’s own shortcomings. While Jiang Tongyan was busy mocking Qian Xiaoke for having the maturity of a three-year-old, he failed to realise that, at thirty, he hadn’t been much more mature himself.

Qian Xiaoke swaggered ahead, looking like he was walking with a powerful, confident stride, but in reality, he was mentally calculating—36 yuan for the spicy hot pot plus 3 yuan for the iced cola. One meal had cost him an entire day’s food budget!

Qian Xiaoke, who had always been careful with money, was bleeding in his heart.

However, he did learn a valuable lesson from this experience: First, he decided it was best to stay away from Jiang Tongyan because he realised that whenever he was around him, his rationality would vanish, and he could snap at any moment, never knowing what kind of reckless actions he might take out of spite. Second, no matter how angry or prideful he got, he should never joke around with money again. Every single penny he had didn’t just fall from the sky—it was his hard-earned money, and it wasn’t worth wasting. Really, it just wasn’t worth it!

Qian Xiaoke pouted and mourned for the 39 yuan he lost.

       “Hey.”

       “I’m not Hey.”

“Qian Xiaoke.” Jiang Tongyan took a few quick steps and followed him. “We haven’t finished discussing that matter just now.”

Jiang Tongyan thought: Why am I so idle? I haven’t even looked at the contract Cheng Sen sent me, yet I somehow have time to be tangled up with this little nutcase here.

“What’s the matter?” Qian Xiaoke was a little absent-minded when he answered. He was thinking about his 39 yuan.

This bottle of Coke hadn’t been opened yet. He decided not to drink it. He took it home and kept it. He would open the bottle to celebrate when he got a salary increase or a bonus.

Actually, although Qian Xiaoke didn’t make much money every month, he wasn’t so tight. After deducting the rent from his monthly salary, the rest was enough for him to live an everyday life. It was just that he always tried to save a little money every month.

Qian Xiaoke was well aware that life wasn’t easy, and he knew he didn’t have any great abilities. He set small monthly goals for himself, mainly because deep down, he had a bigger goal that he only dared to think about vaguely, never having the courage to actually write it down and stick it on the refrigerator door.

Every month, he divided his salary into several parts: one for rent, one for living expenses, and the rest for other uses.

Since he started working, Qian Xiaoke set aside two hundred yuan each month to buy into the ‘Free Lunch’ initiative he found online, a charity project that provides meals for children in impoverished areas. It wasn’t that he thought of himself as particularly noble; he just believed in doing good deeds whenever possible to accumulate some good karma. Who knew, maybe one day, all that accumulated karma would pay off, and he’d reach the peak of his life.

In addition, he kept the remaining money in a separate account. He didn’t even dare to name the account, nor did he dare to hope that one day this thing would really work.

He saved that money to buy a house. He knew that he definitely couldn’t afford it, but he still saved a few hundred yuan every month.

Sometimes, when Qian Xiaoke heard his colleagues talking about housing prices, he would hide and look at his savings. He knew that he would need to work hard for another 100 years to buy a small house of 50 square meters.

However, Qian Xiaoke felt quite happy to live like this every day.

“You’ve forgotten so quickly?” Jiang Tongyan said, “Who do you think should hold a grudge between us?”

Qian Xiaoke’s body shook again when he heard this.

He knew that Jiang Tongyan was here to seek revenge.

After that night, Qian Xiaoke seriously reflected on it. He knew that Jiang Tongyan was half responsible for this matter, and he was also half responsible, but…

Qian Xiaoke covered his face with grief and struggled for five minutes.

For those five minutes, his mother’s teachings echoed in his mind: Xiaoke, we may be poor, but we are not poor in spirit. As people, we must be open, honest, and straightforward. We should be upright, righteous, and dignified. We must never engage in sneaky or opportunistic activities, and we absolutely must not do anything that goes against our conscience or harms society!

At this moment, Qian Xiaoke, standing on the sidewalk, seemed to be performing a one-man show, and Jiang Tongyan stood beside him and watched the fun, holding back his laughter.

Finally, Qian Xiaoke calmed down and opened his small schoolbag again.

He took out his bank card—the card on which he was going to save money to buy a house.

Qian Xiaoke handed the card to Jiang Tongyan with shaking hands, “Take it.”

       “Hm?”

“This is all my savings,” Qian Xiaoke said, “Take it for your medical treatment. If it’s not enough, I will start a street stall tomorrow night and sell all the T-shirts, slippers and jeans I have worn at home at a low price to see if I can raise enough money for your medical expenses.”

Jiang Tongyan: “…Are you out of your mind?”

“Just take it.” Qian Xiaoke sighed, “I really should take responsibility for you like a man.”

Chapter 49

After class, Chen Youyou noticed that Zhan Weiyang was daydreaming. It wasn’t just daydreaming; during the morning self-study session, when the teacher wasn’t in the classroom, Chen Youyou turned around to look at Zhan Weiyang a few times and found him smiling foolishly.

Actually, Chen Youyou wanted to tell Zhan Weiyang about the incident with Xie Ling yesterday. Although he gave the bicycle to Xie Ling yesterday, he felt a little guilty. Originally, he wanted Zhan Weiyang to give Xie Ling a ride. Then the two of them would get to know each other as Zhan Weiyang helped Xie Ling change the tyre. As it turned out, Zhan Weiyang ran away directly, and Xie Ling’s bicycle was still broken there without anyone to take care of it. The more Chen Youyou thought about it, the more embarrassed he felt.

He couldn’t help but want to urge Zhan Weiyang to help Xie Ling fix the bicycle, but he saw Zhan Weiyang in a daze all morning.

Before Chen Youyou had time to speak, a boy from the next class suddenly called Zhan Weiyang’s name at the back door of the classroom.

Zhan Weiyang suddenly came to his senses and turned his head to take a look. He stood up and walked towards the back door, curiously asked, “Is there anything wrong?”

The boy threw a bicycle key to him and said, “Xie Ling asked me to give it to you.”

Zhan Weiyang was puzzled. After taking the key, he found that it looked familiar. He thought about it and said, “Oh.”

       The boy had left.

Zhan Weiyang returned to his seat and asked Chen Youyou, “Isn’t this the bicycle key you lent me yesterday?”

       Chen Youyou said, “Yes.”

Zhan Weiyang asked him, “Why is it with Xie Ling?”

Chen Youyou did not answer directly but thought for a while and said, “Do you, want to accompany, him to fix the bike, the tyre?”

Zhan Weiyang suddenly remembered, “Oh right, his tyre is broken.”

Chen Youyou said, “Yeah. I, gave it, to him yesterday.”

Zhan Weiyang panicked, “What should I do? We broke it for him.”

Chen Youyou reached out and grabbed Zhan Weiyang’s shoulders, shaking him hard, “So you, must go to, accompany him, to fix it!”

He shook Zhan Weiyang so hard that he disturbed Zhan Weiyang’s deskmate. The little girl said impatiently, “Do you guys have a problem or something?”

Chen Youyou withdrew his hand and said to Zhan Weiyang, “You, can do, whatever you want.”

Zhan Weiyang was very distressed. Later in class, he kept thinking about this problem. When class was over, he pulled Chen Youyou and accompanied him to the bike shed, and the two found Xie Ling’s bike. They saw that the bike was still in there, and the rear tyre was still flat.

Chen Youyou squatted down and pinched the tyre.

Zhan Weiyang stood and thought seriously. After a long time, he said to Chen Youyou, “I have thought of a way.”

Chen Youyou looked at him incredulously.

After lunch at noon, Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou went outside the school to find a bicycle repairman. They used the excuse that their own bicycles were broken and they could not ride out, so they asked the guard to let the man in.

The repairman brought tools and new tyres. When changing the tyres, Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou squatted beside and watched.

Chen Youyou couldn’t help but be curious, “Isn’t this your chance to get close to Xie Ling?”

Zhan Weiyang supported his face with his hands and said, “I don’t understand why I should get close to Xie Ling.”

“Huh?” Chen Youyou was very confused.

Zhan Weiyang stared at the front and suddenly leaned close to Chen Youyou’s ear.

Chen Youyou immediately understood that something was to be said to him in secret, so he quickly moved closer and then heard Zhan Weiyang say, “I’m in love.” This was said sweetly and shyly.

“What?!” Chen Youyou stood up in shock and yelled so loudly that the repairman dropped all the tools in his hand.

Zhan Weiyang put his finger to his lips, “Shh—-“

Chen Youyou squatted down again, this time very close to Zhan Weiyang. The two of them were close to each other, almost pushing Zhan Weiyang down. The shock in his eyes had not yet subsided, and he asked, “Who is it?”

Zhan Weiyang hugged his knees with his arms and said, “It’s me.”

Chen Youyou said, “Nonsense! Who are, you with?”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him and refused to tell him.

Chen Youyou asked him, “You don’t like Xie Ling anymore?”

       Zhan Weiyang didn’t say anything.

Chen Youyou didn’t want to pursue this matter further. He was more interested in something else. He raised his hand and bumped Zhan Weiyang, “Who is it?” After saying that, he added, “Boy or girl?”

Zhan Weiyang still didn’t say anything.

Chen Youyou said, “You’re annoying.” Keeping people on edge!

Zhan Weiyang suddenly blushed. He raised his hand to cover his face and whispered to Chen Youyou, “I kissed him.”

This news was like a bolt from the blue for Chen Youyou. He hadn’t expected that at seventeen, he would still be a virgin while Zhan Weiyang would be the first to date and kiss someone. Chen Youyou’s tone became a bit sour as he asked, “Who is it?”

Zhan Weiyang smiled and shook his body left and right but didn’t say anything.

At this time, the repairman had already changed the bicycle tyre and stood up to pack up the tools.

Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou didn’t continue talking. The two of them sent the repairman out of the school and then returned to the classroom together.

Walking to the door of the classroom, Chen Youyou grabbed Zhan Weiyang, “What about Xie Ling?”

Zhan Weiyang’s expression suddenly became solemn.

Chen Youyou looked at his face, “W-what happened?”

Zhan Weiyang whispered, “There’s a lot that I gave up.”

“Huh?” Chen Youyou was confused all afternoon. He felt that Zhan Weiyang was leading him to run around, and he didn’t understand what had happened.

Zhan Weiyang’s tone became sad, “Chen Youyou.”

       Chen Youyou said, “What?”

Zhan Weiyang turned around and faced him, saying, “I dare not tell him, but I will tell you secretly, okay?”

       “Tell me, what?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I will become a tree in the future, and you have to come to see me often. I only have you as a friend.”

       Chen Youyou frowned.

Zhan Weiyang lowered his head and picked his fingers, “I know I shouldn’t do this, but I can’t help it.”

Chen Youyou felt puzzled all afternoon.

When school was over, the boarding students went to the cafeteria for dinner, and the day students went home, leaving Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou in the classroom.

Zhan Weiyang said to Chen Youyou, “I have a System.”

Chen Youyou’s face was full of confusion, “Huh?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I must court Xie Ling; otherwise, my points will be deducted. And when all the points are deducted, I will become a tree.”

Chen Youyou’s expression changed from incomprehension to disgust, and finally said, “Are you crazy?”

Zhan Weiyang was a little unhappy and said, “I’m not crazy. Can’t you listen to me carefully?”

       Chen Youyou said, “Then?”

Zhan Weiyang continued, “That’s it, but I have someone I like more now, I can’t play two boats, I can only choose one.”

Chen Youyou looked at him in confusion.

Zhan Weiyang said, “I hesitated for a long time. This is not an impulsive decision. Even if I have to become a tree in the end, I want to be…” He lowered his voice and finally whispered, “Be together.”

After that, he saw Chen Youyou staring at him without saying anything, so he said, “I only told this secret to you. You are my best friend.”

       Chen Youyou said, “So?”

Zhan Weiyang grabbed his hand: “If one day I become a tree, you can’t forget me.”

       Chen Youyou finally said, “Crazy.”

Chapter 5

       “I choose the second.”

It was not a hard choice.

Survival is a human instinct, and he was only twenty-eight years old, far from the age to see through life and death.

As long as he could keep his life, what did it matter if he lost everything? At worst, they could kick him out of the Chu family, erase his identity, and leave him penniless on the streets. Such a life might be tough, but it was still better than death. At least staying alive meant there was still a future.

Chu Yunhan, who had returned from the hell gate, finally breathed a sigh of relief. When he stood up, he found that his legs were a little weak. He followed Chu Yichen out of the private room and saw Tang Shaocheng leaning on the corridor. The two people’s eyes met, and each saw surprise in the other’s eyes.

Tang Shaocheng’s eyes darkened. He adjusted his expression and greeted Chu Yichen with a smile, “Young Master Chen, here for some fun as well?”

“Had some free time today, thought I’d drop by.” Chu Yichen replied. The Tang family had developed quite well in logistics in recent years, and since the two sides had cooperated before, they knew each other.

“After all, you are the most charming. No matter how much I try to win him over, this Ah Zhou guy doesn’t give me the slightest chance, let alone make an appearance.”

These words made Chu Yunhan’s eyebrows jump. This guy was actually acting jealous at this time. He glanced at Chu Yichen secretly, and seeing that the other party was calm, he did not dare to speak rashly, so he could only remain silent.

“He doesn’t often appear in public, so General Tang may not have recognised him. This is my brother Chu Yunhan.” The man said slowly, “A while ago, he made some mistakes and was punished by being made to work as a waiter in his own place to experience life. Speaking of which, I must thank General Tang for looking after him these past few months.”

       Brother?

Tang Shaocheng was stunned, and it took him a long time to return to his senses. The person he had been chasing for so long was actually the eldest young master of the Chu family, and countless ‘no wonders’ suddenly filled his heart. No wonder his manners were impeccable, his taste refined, and he wouldn’t accept any gifts or give him the time of day. A cold sweat broke out immediately. He had actually tried to get this young master into bed… He quickly recalled if there had been any actions or words that might have offended the young master and hurriedly said, “I truly had no idea. If I have offended Young Master Yun in any way, it was completely unintentional. I sincerely hope Young Master Yun won’t take it to heart.” After all, the Chu family was not like any other business partner; offending them could lead to serious trouble.

Chu Yunhan did not expect that Chu Yichen would reveal his identity so straightforwardly, but since he was given the script, he could only act according to it and said perfunctorily, “Not at all. It’s rare to meet a friend like General Tang—consider it one of the gains from this life experience.”

Only now did Tang Shaocheng get a good look at him. His skin was fair, with brown hair, double eyelids, and long eyelashes. Beneath his slanting eyebrows, his deep-set eyes seemed to hold a hidden allure. His face, flushed with a peachy hue from the alcohol, was undeniably handsome. Such a face, unfortunately, belonged to someone untouchable—it truly was a pity, he sighed inwardly. But he was a man who knew when to hold back; once he identified a danger zone, he would never cross the line. As for the stains of spilt wine on Chu Yunhan, he naturally wouldn’t ask any more questions about their origin.

Three identical black Mercedes-Benzes were already waiting at the door of Lihao. Fortunately, he didn’t have to sit in the same car as Chu Yichen. Chu Yunhan leaned on the back seat and breathed a sigh of relief. When he saw the person clearly in the passenger seat, he was stunned.

       “…Uncle Yang?”

“Young Master.” Yang Lin turned around and spoke rather awkwardly.

“Are you okay? He didn’t do anything to you, right?” He asked anxiously. Lihao’s supervisor was Yang Lin. Finding himself here was tantamount to intentionally hiding him. This was a serious crime in the meeting, and he was very worried about Yang Lin’s safety.

“Young Master Yun, I’m truly sorry…” Yang Lin spoke with his head lowered, his voice choked and faltering. “I wanted to help you; I was always trying to find a way, but then I slipped up, and Hei Yu discovered some clues… If I continued to hide it, I wouldn’t have lasted much longer. So… I’m not afraid to die, but my family—they all depend on me… I had no choice, that’s why I…”

       Told them the truth.

Even Yang Lin, whom he regarded as his last resort, had turned to the other side. At the end of this pursuit and escape game, what trump card did he have left?

Chu Yunhan sat stiffly and was silent for a long time before speaking, “When did he know about it?”

So it turned out he had been exposed long ago, even earlier than he had anticipated. Chu Yichen had already made it clear that there was a connection between himself and Tang Shaocheng, which meant he had been under surveillance for some time. The fact that they waited until today to make a move against him was likely because they wanted to see if he could stir up any more trouble. Thinking of this, he felt a tightness in his chest, a suffocating discomfort.

“Eldest Young Master, the Second Master has kept your matter under wraps, and only a few senior executives in the company know about it. After all, you are brothers; he will surely forgive you…”

“Stop talking.” He leaned back on his seat tiredly and closed his eyes. He knew in his heart that Chu Yichen asked Yang Lin to appear here just to let him understand that he had betrayed his relatives and had no one to rely on. If he wanted to live a good life, he had to obey.

       Was there really nothing left?

He clenched the fist hanging at his side.

No one spoke in the car, and the atmosphere was heavy and tense. Chu Yunhan looked out at the fleeting lights and shadows outside the window and suddenly recalled a fairy tale his mother told him many years ago. In the story, a circus trapped all the homeless animals in a huge cage, dragging them along as they wandered and performed. Eventually, a bard came to their rescue. At that moment, he felt like one of those lost animals, confined in a small cage, hastening towards an unknown destination in the night.

But where was the bard who could save him?

He closed his eyes tiredly and stopped trying to read the road signs. No matter what Chu Yichen wanted to do to him, it was just a matter of dealing with challenges as they came and protecting himself as best as he could.

About half an hour later, the car came to a stop, revealing a familiar scene. A brightly lit traditional Chinese courtyard with a round archway leading to an exquisitely landscaped garden. Walking through the covered walkway and around a pool of jade-green water, one would find a three-story building with white walls and blue tiles.

Chu Yunhan looked up to the room on the right side of the third floor, and the wooden wind chime hanging on the wooden pane window made a faint sound in the night wind.

       That was his room.

Or rather the room that once belonged to him.

This old Chu family residence was the place where he grew up. The old master of the Chu family enjoyed lively gatherings, so his sons raised all the children here. It wasn’t until they reached high school that each of them returned to their own homes. Even so, during holidays, everyone would come back, and they would meet frequently. Afterwards, when his father, Chu Qin, suddenly passed away from a heart attack, Chu Yunhan rarely came back. Meanwhile, after Chu Yichen was confirmed as the next family head, he continued to live in the old residence with both of his fathers.

Although the old man who sent off the young man with black hair did not speak of it, his spirit suffered as a result. He then passed away six months later. At the funeral, the two of them had black gauze wrapped around their arms and stood side by side with Min Ran on the side of the mourning hall. Jiahui’s suppressed crying could be heard behind them. No one spoke. From beginning to end, it was like two trees growing alone, hiding all their emotions in the tree holes, standing upright and silent.

That was the last official meeting between them. Two years later, Chu Yu retreated to seclusion for physical reasons. Chu Yichen officially took over the Chu family’s leadership and became the family’s head. Chu Yunhan graduated from university and held the title of director of several companies. He lived freely in the mountains and seas for a long time and made many friends. Chu Yichen called him back several times during this period, but he ignored them. It had been a long time since he returned to his hometown this time.

Chu Yunhan followed the man upstairs and opened the door. The furnishings in the room had not changed. On the table were the handmade motorcycle models he had made before and some photos he had taken when he was young. On the table were a used gamepad. The room was cleaned and spotlessly clean.

“You will live here starting today.” Chu Yichen only said this and left. Chu Yunhan sat for a while, then stood up and opened the wardrobe. On one side of the inside were the clothes he had worn and even a set of junior high school uniforms that he had left behind in the old house and forgotten to take away. On the other side were several sets of cotton home clothes, all of which were loose-fitting. They seemed to have been washed and were exactly the size he was wearing. He took a shower, washed the red wine off his body, and put on his clothes and slippers. However, he had no desire to sleep, so he went downstairs to take a stroll.

The night was deep, the moonlight serene, and the indigo sky dotted with twinkling stars. A thin layer of mist floated on the pond. He walked slowly along the path paved with pebbles by the edge of the pond. The wind rustled the drooping willows, brushing past his hair, sweeping across the water’s surface, creating delicate ripples. He was heading towards a pavilion not far away when he heard a rustling sound and stopped to find its source.

Suddenly, a huge black shadow stood up from the wall, scaring him so much that he took a step back. When he looked closely, he saw a big black dog looking at him warily, and he was suddenly frightened out of his wits.

Damn, I forgot there was this guy by the pond!

“T-thor…” He was afraid of dogs. When he was a child, despite warnings, he boldly tried to provoke a pregnant shepherd’s dog, and was knocked to the ground by a swipe of its paw. If the bodyguard hadn’t arrived in time, his arm would have been bitten to pieces. Since then, he has been afraid of dogs, especially large ones.

The big dog seemed to recognise his voice, relaxed its guard, and walked towards him with its tail wagging. “No, don’t come over! Don’t come over, don’t come over…” Chu Yunhan turned pale with fright, and his legs and feet became weak, and he kept backing up. Seeing that the dog was about to pounce, he turned around and ran away in a panic. “Here, help!” Before he could even shout out, he bumped into someone. The man was knocked back a step, clasped his wrist, and said in a deep voice, “Thor, stop!”

The big dog stopped behind him, stuck out its tongue, and barked softly.

Chu Yunhan’s whole body froze, and he barely recovered from the panic. He raised his eyes and saw the person coming. His face immediately turned red, and he whispered, “I…forgot it was here…” but couldn’t continue with the next sentence.

The distance was too close, so close that they were almost touching.

He backed away from the other person’s arms in embarrassment. He felt a hot and humid puff of air behind his back. It was obvious that he was about to hit the dog. His hair stood on end immediately, and he hid forward and pressed into the other person’s arms again.

       Awkwardness squared1something like awkward2.

Chu Yichen looked at him indifferently, showing no intention of retreating to make way for him, nor did he ask the dog to leave. So Chu Yunhan was caught between the man and the dog, unable to move forward or retreat, and became a patty in the hamburger.

       Embarrassing to the Nth power.

“Can… you make it go away first?” He lowered his head and asked. For some reason, he didn’t dare to look into the man’s eyes.

After a long silence, Chu Yichen finally said, “Thor, go back.”

The big dog looked at the two people and reluctantly returned to the kennel next to the wall to lie down. Chu Yunhan breathed a sigh of relief and immediately took a step back. In order to ease the embarrassment, he said something else, “It really listens to you.”

Chu Yichen let go of his wrist and said expressionlessly, “To me, an obedient dog has a value of existence. The same goes for people.”
