Morbid Addiction

Chapter 5

Zhou Yan didn’t say why he thought Ning Junyan was scary, and Chen Yuncheng didn’t ask. In comparison, Chen Yuncheng and Ning Junyan had been together for a longer time. He knew Ning Junyan better than Zhou Yan, and he also knew why Zhou Yan was afraid of Ning Junyan.

There was a time when not only Zhou Yan was afraid of Ning Junyan, but even his foster parents were also afraid of him.

After the meal, Zhou Yan had to go to the hospital, and the two parted at the door of the restaurant.

Chen Yuncheng walked back alone for more than ten minutes. Because he had just eaten and drank some wine, his whole body felt warm, and he couldn’t help but slightly open the front of his down jacket when he got there.

Back in the inner room of his small kiosk, Chen Yuncheng lowered his head and smelled the down jacket. He took off his clothes and hung them at the window, and then went to the bathroom to take a shower.

The water took a while to get hot, so Chen Yuncheng took advantage of this time to take off his clothes and stood under the shower until the water was completely heated up.

He habitually picked up the water and washed his face, suddenly recalling the first time he helped Ning Junyan take a bath.

It was the same day that he first met Ning Junyan. After dinner at night, his foster father and foster mother went back to the room to watch TV, while he boiled a pot of boiling water on the gas stove in the kitchen.

It was early summer, and the weather was quite hot but not so hot that he would take a bath with cold water.

After the water was heated up, Chen Yuncheng carried the kettle to the yard. He first took half a bucket of cold water into the bucket and then mixed it with hot water until he felt that the temperature was just right.

Then Chen Yuncheng took off his clothes and used a small aluminium basin to scoop water on himself.

During this process, Ning Junyan squatted by the wall and kept looking at him blankly.

But at that time Chen Yuncheng didn’t know what Ning Junyan’s name was. He rinsed his body with water, wiped it from head to toe with soap, and after rubbing the foam carefully, he washed the foam away with water and felt that he had washed himself clean.

Chen Yuncheng shook the water from his hair, and instead of reaching for the towel, he squatted down and lifted the kettle, and found that there was half a kettle of hot water left.

After hesitating for a while, Chen Yuncheng raised his head to look at Ning Junyan and called him, “Hey!”

       Ning Junyan did not respond.

Chen Yuncheng said tentatively, “Mute? Are you a mute?”

       Ning Junyan looked at him.

Chen Yuncheng didn’t care that he was still naked, and waved to him calmly, “Do you want to take a bath?”

       Ning Junyan didn’t move.

Chen Yuncheng simply walked toward him, grabbed his hand, pulled him up from the wall, and dragged him to the yard.

Ning Junyan’s body was still dirty, Chen Yuncheng stretched out his hand to undress him, but he didn’t resist. Only after he took off Ning Junyan’s shirt did Chen Yuncheng find that Ning Junyan had a large number of scratches on his back, and the colour was still bright red now.

Chen Yuncheng frowned and didn’t ask him how he was hurt. He squatted down and took off his trousers. When he took it off to his feet, he raised his head and said to him, “Lift your feet.”

Ning Junyan looked down at him and raised his feet one after the other, allowing Chen Yuncheng to strip him naked as well.

The two of them stood by the drainage ditch in the corner of the yard, because Ning Junyan was a bit higher than Chen Yuncheng, Chen Yuncheng stood at the edge of the concrete pool and raised the basin in his hand to pour the water over his head.

As the water dripped down, Chen Yuncheng found that Ning Junyan frowned unconsciously.

At that time, it was not completely dark, and Chen Yuncheng subconsciously ruffled the hair on top of Ning Junyan’s head, only to find that he also had injuries on his head.

Chen Yuncheng lowered his head and said to Ning Junyan, “You have a wound on your head, does it hurt?”

Ning Junyan just glanced at him.

Chen Yuncheng thought he was very interesting, and asked again, “Does it hurt? If it hurts, I’ll be more gentle.”

Unexpectedly, Ning Junyan shook his head very lightly at this time.

Chen Yuncheng was a little surprised, and said after a pause, “Then I will continue to wash.”

Despite that, Chen Yuncheng carefully avoided the wound on Ning Junyan’s head, and when applying soap to him, he gently wiped his back, trying not to hurt him.

After they took a shower, Chen Yuncheng found a set of old clothes for Ning Junyan to put on.

This set of clothes was too big for Chen Yuncheng. It wasn’t his clothes at first. It was old clothes that his foster mother had gotten for him. After she washed it, she kept it in Chen Yuncheng’s cabinet.

After that, Chen Yuncheng threw the dirty clothes that the two of them had changed into the basin and washed them together. While he was doing the laundry, Ning Junyan sat on the small stool under the eaves and looked at Chen Yuncheng intently.

Chen Yuncheng occasionally raised his head to talk to him, Ning Junyan would not respond to him, but Chen Yuncheng didn’t mind talking to himself.

It was completely dark by this time. An incandescent lamp was lit in the yard, and a few moths circled constantly around the light.

There were four rooms around the yard; one was the kitchen where they ate, and only one of the other three rooms was lit. It was their foster parent’s room where they were watching TV.

After Chen Yuncheng finished washing his clothes, he turned off the lights in the yard and took Ning Junyan’s hand to his room.

The room had a worn wooden bed and an old-fashioned wooden wardrobe.

Chen Yuncheng asked him to sit down beside the bed, turned on a small lamp, and then opened the cabinet and rummaged in the drawers below. He found a few Band-Aids, and then returned to the bed. He said to Ning Junyan, “I’ll help you deal with it. Is the wound on the head okay?” He knew that the foster father and foster mother wouldn’t care about it.

Ning Junyan looked at the Band-Aid in his hand and did not speak.

Chen Yuncheng took it as his silent agreement. He raised his hand and brushed Ning Junyan’s hair to take a closer look at the wound on the top of the head. The wound on Ning Junyan’s head was not very deep, and it didn’t look too serious, but there was a big bulge next to the wound. Chen Yuncheng pressed it down with his hand and found that it was soft but not bleeding.

Chen Yuncheng didn’t understand what was going on. He held the Band-Aid in his hand for a long time and felt that he was blocked by Ning Junyan’s hair. He hesitated, and asked Ning Junyan, “Can I cut your hair short?”

       Ning Junyan did not answer.

Chen Yuncheng made his own decision, picked up the scissors on the bedside table, and cut the hair on the top of Ning Junyan’s head mercilessly. In the end, only a thin layer was left to stick to the scalp, before he put the Band-Aid on.

After he put on the Band-Aid, Chen Yuncheng saw that Ning Junyan’s hair was messed up as if it had been bitten by a dog, so he cut all the hair around him short.

During this process, Ning Junyan sat motionless by the bed.

Chen Yuncheng didn’t care whether the cut was good or not. After the cut, he called him to get up, brushed all the hair that has been cut off on the sheets to the ground, and said to Ning Junyan, “Go and bring in the broom for me.”

       Ning Junyan didn’t respond.

Chen Yuncheng was not angry, he went out and took a broom to clean all the hair on the ground. Afterwards, he returned to his room, turned over on the bed, pulled out an old comic from under the pillow, lay down and read it intently.

Ning Junyan stood by the bed and watched him for a while, then quietly climbed onto the bed and lay down beside Chen Yuncheng.

       ———

After he turn off the hot water, Chen Yuncheng reached out and picked up the towel hanging on the wall to wipe his body, and wiped the mist on the mirror.

In the mirror, there was no longer the flimsy and thin boy at that time. The twenty eight year old Chen Yuncheng was well-proportioned, with a thin layer of muscles covering his chest and abdomen, and his legs were slender.

He hadn’t thought about those things in the past for a long time. Maybe it was Ning Junyan’s sudden appearance that made him remember again.

As he put on his pyjamas, Chen Yuncheng left the bathroom and went back to the bed in the room to lie down. Strictly speaking, the conditions here were not very good, but this bed was much softer and warmer than the one he slept with Ning Junyan before.

Chen Yuncheng pulled the quilt to cover half of his face. The alcohol made his heart beat faster, he was a little irritable, and he was reluctant to recall those pasts.

Chapter 4

On the way back, the heater in Ning Junyan’s car was still fully on.

The two of them didn’t speak much, and Chen Yuncheng had been giving Ning Junyan directions. After spending more than forty minutes, Ning Junyan parked his car at the roadside of Chen Yuncheng’s small kiosk.

Chen Yuncheng had no intention of inviting Ning Junyan to sit in his place, so he just said, “Thank you.”

Ning Junyan glanced at the tightly closed rolling shutter by the roadside, reached out and picked up the mobile phone in the car, and asked, “Phone number?”

Chen Yuncheng couldn’t help but glance at his cell phone and gave his mobile number. He then saw Ning Junyan calling him.

The phone rang twice and hung up.

Chen Yuncheng opened the car door and got out of the car. He stood in front of the car door, and said to Ning Junyan, “I’ll invite you to dinner next time when you have time.”

       Ning Junyan did not speak.

Chen Yuncheng then said, “Be careful on the road.” This meant to send off the guest. After he said that, he raised his hand and closed the car door, took a half step back, and waved at Ning Junyan who was in the car.

       Ning Junyan drove away.

Chen Yuncheng always had a feeling of being in a trance. He stood on the side of the road for a while, then squatted down and opened the door with the key, and got into his old kiosk that didn’t even have a signboard.

The weather was getting colder day by day.

Before going to bed, Chen Yuncheng boiled a pot of hot water and sat on the edge of the bed to heat his feet. He lazily fell on his back on the soft bed and reached for the phone that was thrown on the bed. He found that the screen still had the alert of the missed call from Ning Junyan.

He opened the caller ID, saved Ning Junyan’s number and name in the address book, and then put away the phone. He raised his hand and rubbed his face, sighed, and closed his eyes.

Ning Junyan later spent more than half an hour driving from Chen Yuncheng to his home.

When he opened the door, the room was pitch black. He reached out and turned on the light in the entrance hall, and only then did a pale yellow light illuminates the smaller half of the room.

This house was more than 130 square meters, which was actually a bit big for him to live alone. The decoration style of the whole house was very concise, the tones are also cold, and it seemed deserted all the time.

Ning Junyan put his coat on the armrest of the sofa and walked inside wearing slippers.

Although it was winter, he still opened the refrigerator and took out a bottle of mineral water, unscrewed the lid and drank a small half of the bottle, and then put the remaining half back.

After he took a shower, Ning Junyan sat topless on the edge of the bed in the well-heated bedroom, reaching for the phone on the bed.

The WeChat group that he joined because of work was flashing messages all the time, but most of the time had nothing to do with work.

He copied Chen Yuncheng’s phone number, clicked on WeChat to find the other party, and saw that Chen Yuncheng’s WeChat name was Strange City1mòshēng de chéng..

Ning Junyan’s WeChat name was only a simple “Ning”, and he added Chen Yuncheng WeChat. He then put the phone on the bedside table and reached out to turn off the lamp to sleep.

While Chen Yuncheng sat at the counter to wait for the kiosk to open the next, he opened WeChat on his mobile phone, only to find that Ning Junyan had added him as a friend. After he clicked agree, he saw Ning Junyan appear in his friend column but did not take the initiative to contact him. And Ning Junyan never looked for him again, as if he was just going through a procedure.

A few days later, Zhou Yan appeared on his own initiative.

His overall mental state was much better than last time. He was wearing a white shirt and a tie inside the black down jacket.

As soon as Chen Yuncheng saw him, he asked, “Have you found a new job?”

Zhou Yan nodded. He walked into the store, leaned against the counter, and asked Chen Yuncheng to bring him a pack of cigarettes.

Chen Yuncheng brought him a pack of ten yuan2$1.49 cigarettes, put them on the glass counter, and said, “It’s on me, but you should smoke less in the future.”

However, Zhou Yan raised his hand and pulled out his down jacket. He took out his wallet from the inner pocket, and took out twenty yuan3$2.98 and put it on the cigarette box, “How dare I let you treat me, today I’m here to invite you to dinner.”

Chen Yuncheng lowered his eyes, looked at the twenty yuan, and said, “Really?”

“I’m currently working as a salesman at a shop that sells used cars.”

The restaurant where Zhou Yan invited Chen Yuncheng to eat was a nearby chain store that did very good business. At dinner every day, the store was almost full, and the tables and chairs were placed outside, occupying the originally wide street.

The two of them were sitting on the side of the street. The wind was too cold in the winter. The boss covered both sides with transparent plastic sheets. With the constant tumbling heat from the bottom of the pot, the open-air environment was barely warm.

Chen Yuncheng put his chopsticks on the bowl, looked at the bamboo sticks inserted into the hotpot, leaned back in the chair, and asked Zhou Yan, “Is there enough money for the child’s treatment?”

Zhou Yan shook his head, “But there is always hope.” He looked rather relaxed.

Chen Yuncheng felt a little strange, “It’s so profitable to sell used cars now?”

Zhou Yan heard the question in his tone, reached out and grabbed a handful of cooked beef, and handed it to Chen Yuncheng, “The market is not bad now,” he said, “It’s true, Cheng ge.”

Chen Yuncheng took the beef and saw that Zhou Yan took out a work permit from his shirt pocket. It was a second-hand car sales permit.

Zhou Yan stuffed the work permit back.

Chen Yuncheng asked him, “You are not working with Zhang Wenyong, did you?”

       Zhou Yan asked strangely, “Why?”

Chen Yuncheng shook his head. He didn’t know what Zhang Wenyong was doing recently, but that day Long Zhanyu specially came to ask him about Zhang Wenyong, which made him feel vaguely uneasy.

The reason why this shop’s business was so good was that the food really tasted very good. Chen Yuncheng used chopsticks to put all the beef on the bamboo stick into the dipping plate, and then slowly picked it up and ate it.

The bottom of the pot in front of him was churning, and the red oil rolled over the pale red soup base, and a white mist with a spicy taste emerged.

Through the white mist, Chen Yuncheng said to Zhou Yan, “I met Ning Junyan.”

Zhou Yan was obviously stunned and asked, “Who?”

“Ning Junyan,” Chen Yuncheng repeated, he felt that Zhou Yan might not remember this person.

However, Zhou Yan put down his chopsticks, and the whole person looked dazed, “Is it really Ning Junyan?”

       Chen Yuncheng nodded.

Zhou Yan didn’t speak, as if he was instantly lost in memory.

And following this gap, Chen Yuncheng also subconsciously remembered the first time he saw Ning Junyan. At that time, Ning Junyan was actually ten years old. Although the clothes he was wearing were a little dirty, he could see that he looked good. He squatted quietly in the corner with a pale and dull expression on his face.

Chen Yuncheng was eight years old at the time, and e had not washed his hair for nearly half a month. He saw that his foster mother was finishing cooking and his foster father was not in the house, so he approached cautiously and called him, “Hello?”

       Ning Junyan did not speak.

Chen Yuncheng reached out and pushed Ning Junyan’s shoulder.

Ning Junyan still didn’t respond, didn’t even look at him.

Chen Yuncheng retracted his hand in disappointment, thinking that he was a fool.

“What is he doing now?” Zhou Yan suddenly spoke and interrupted Chen Yuncheng’s thoughts.

Chen Yuncheng leaned to the other side and said, “A doctor.”

Zhou Yan smiled when he heard the words, “I didn’t expect it.” He spoke to himself, and couldn’t help but add, “Actually, it’s normal, his family seems to be very rich, right? And we’re not from the same world in the first place.”

       Chen Yuncheng did not speak.

Zhou Yan paused for a while and said, “Actually, I think he is quite scary.”

Chen Yuncheng raised his eyes and looked at him.

Chapter 3

TL: Hoenimochi
TLC: Hoenibean

When Zhou Yan’s son was hospitalized, Chen Yuncheng took a day off to visit the hospital in the afternoon.

Before he left, he picked up a carton of milk from the kiosk, pulled down the shutter and locked it, and then walked towards the subway station.

Zhou Yan was not in the hospital, and Chen Yuncheng only saw his girlfriend Gu Yaojia in the ward with the child.

Chen Yuncheng sat down and chatted with Gu Yaojia for a while.

When asked where Zhou Yan had gone, Gu Yaojia did not look too good and said, “He went to get some money.” He could hear that she had some complaints in her tone.

After all, Gu Yaojia was still young. Before, when she was only with Zhou Yan, they were happy and had nothing to care about. However, once they had children, they were held back by many of reality’s worries.

Now that the child was sick and needed money for treatment, it was not easy to feel fulfilled in many ways.

Chen Yuncheng listened quietly and had nothing to say. He glanced at the sleeping child lying on the hospital bed, stood up, and said, “Then you all have a good rest, I’ll go first.”

“Cheng ge, thank you,” Gu Yaojia accompanied Chen Yuncheng to the door of the ward.

Chen Yuncheng waved his hand to tell her that she didn’t have to send him off. He walked through the corridor where people came and went, before heading towards the elevator.

This was one of the largest hospitals in Chongfeng City. Every ward that Chen Yuncheng passed by was full of patients and there were loud noises everywhere. Some children were crying, and some family members were sitting at the door of the ward chatting. The inpatient building seemed to have the central air conditioning turned on. The air was dry and muggy, with a unique smell only belonging to the hospital. The window at the end of the corridor was open, but it only opened a little and was firmly stuck. The gap was only as much as a slit that even a child could not get through.

Today was not the weekend, nor was it lunch time, so he didn’t see anyone at the elevator.

Chen Yuncheng waited for more than ten seconds. When the elevator door opened, he saw a man standing inside.

The man was very tall and wore a simple white coat that couldn’t completely hide his excellent figure. His expression was indifferent, but the moment the elevator door opened, his eyes fell on Chen Yuncheng’s face.

Chen Yuncheng did not avoid his gaze. He walked towards the elevator, and at the same time, saw the work card on the man’s chest. In addition to the picture, the words “Ning Junyan” were particularly prominent.

It turned out that he was really Ning Junyan and Chen Yuncheng was not mistaken.

He walked in, turned his back to Ning Junyan, and his eyes fell on the constantly flashing floor lights.

The elevator door slowly closed and the elevator began to descend.

When they went down two floors, the elevator stopped, and seven or eight people came in at once from outside and filled the entire elevator in an instant.

Chen Yuncheng subconsciously backed up and felt his heel step on something. He quickly stopped his steps, turned back and said, “I’m sorry.”

Ning Junyan, who was stepped on by him, did not speak.

Chen Yuncheng stood beside Ning Junyan and leaned against the innermost wall of the elevator.

Later, some people came in the elevator, and it became more and more crowded. The air in the small and closed environment was turbid. Chen Yuncheng smelled smoke and sweat that didn’t belong in winter. There was also a little bit of what seemed like a perfume on Ning Junyan.

With his hand hanging by his side, he accidentally touched the back of Ning Junyan’s hand, so he subconsciously looked down and saw the expensive high-end watch on Ning Junyan’s wrist, as well as the worn-out white marks on the cuffs of his own down jacket.

Chen Yuncheng suddenly thought that it was good that Ning Junyan did not recognize him.

The elevator of the hospital went down to the first floor and all the people in front walked out. When Chen Yuncheng followed behind Ning Junyan was still behind him.

He stepped out of the elevator, looked up to identify his next direction, and was about to walk towards the door of the inpatient department.

At this time, he suddenly heard someone calling his name from behind, “Chen Yuncheng.”

How old was Ning Junyan the year they got separated? Chen Yuncheng remembered that Ning Junyan seemed to be fourteen, because at that time he was twelve years old, and he knew that Ning Junyan was two years older than him. The fourteen-year-old Ning Junyan was in a period of rapid development. He was growing taller and his voice became deeper and unpleasant, so the last thing left in Chen Yuncheng’s memory was only a shadow of the boy whose voice had changed.

It was not at all like the present, where Chen Yuncheng heard the voice of an unfamiliar, low-pitched adult male.

Chen Yuncheng turned around and saw Ning Junyan standing not far from the elevator door.

There were no unnecessary pleasantries. Chen Yuncheng wanted to greet him with a smile and ask him when he recognized him, but Ning Junyan just said in a flat tone, “I’ll be off work in half an hour, is it convenient to have dinner together?”

       Chen Yuncheng nodded, “Sure.”

He said it was half an hour, but in fact, when Chen Yuncheng got into Ning Junyan’s Land Rover, it was already almost an hour later.

Ning Junyan took off his white lab coat and changed into a dark coat with a light camel coloured cashmere shirt inside.

If these kinds of clothes were worn by Chen Yuncheng, it would be cold even if he had a fire on when he huddled in his kiosk every day.

But Ning Junyan had sufficient heating both in the hospital and in the car. In this environment, Chen Yuncheng felt that after staying a little longer, he would even start sweating.

As they arrived at the restaurant Ning Junyan chose for dinner, Chen Yuncheng took off his jacket as soon as he sat down, revealing his thin sweater inside.

He still felt a little hot, so he picked up a glass of water and took a sip of lemonade. The water was cold.

Ning Junyan sat opposite him and hardly spoke on the way out of the car until now, but when Chen Yuncheng took off his jacket, his eyes fell on him and he didn’t look away for a long time.

After Ning Junyan finished ordering, Chen Yuncheng finally couldn’t help but say, “I thought you didn’t recognize me.”

Ning Junyan also took a sip of water from the cup and said, “I did.”

       The two fell silent again.

Chen Yuncheng was suddenly amused. He felt that he had found the same Ning Junyan that was in his memory. At that time, Ning Junyan was also like that, not willing to talk much and did not pay attention to anyone.

He then smiled and said, “How long has it been? More than ten years, right?” He actually remembered when asking, but deliberately said it vaguely.

Unexpectedly, Ning Junyan said, “Sixteen years.”

Chen Yuncheng looked at him, “I didn’t expect you to be a doctor.”

Ning Junyan looked him straight in the eyes, “What do you think I should have been?”

Chen Yuncheng shook his head, “I can’t imagine.”

Ning Junyan asked, “How about you?”

Chen Yuncheng smiled, “I, ah, run a little business.”

The waiters brought out their dishes one by one.

After eating in silence for a while, Chen Yuncheng asked, “Are you married?”

“No,” Ning Junyan answered quickly, and then asked, “Are you married?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “No, I’m still alone.”

Ning Junyan nodded and said nothing.

After they ate dinner and came out of the restaurant, Chen Yuncheng immediately put on his down jacket and wrapped it tightly around his body. He saw that Ning Junyan’s coat was still on his arm, and didn’t ask him if it would be cold, but just said, “Thank you for tonight, then I’ll go back first.”

They didn’t even ask for each other’s contact information.

Chen Yuncheng hesitated, but he saw that Ning Junyan didn’t bring it up, so he didn’t take the initiative to mention it either. Although it was Ning Junyan who invited him to have dinner together, he could feel Ning Junyan’s indifference and cold detachment. Maybe they were only going to have this one meal and would never see each other again.

Ning Junyan looked at him and said, “I will send you off.”

Chen Yuncheng said with a smile, “No need. I’m going to take the subway, it won’t take much time.”

Ning Junyan’s tone was calm and he repeated, “I will send you off.”

The valet boy at the entrance of the restaurant drove Ning Junyan’s car over, got out of the car and handed him the car keys.

Ning Junyan didn’t speak anymore and walked toward his Land Rover.

Chen Yuncheng had no choice but to follow.

Chapter 2

TL: Hoenimochi
TLC: Hoenibean

Chen Yuncheng walked toward the subway station. On the way, he tried to call Zhang Wenyong again, but the other party still didn’t answer. He had to leave him a message on WeChat, put the phone back in his pocket and trot across the street at the green light to enter the platform of the subway station.

As he entered the station, Chen Yuncheng looked up subconsciously and saw a dark grey Land Rover passing by the street. In his haste, he didn’t manage to see the license plate number clearly before he lowered his head and stepped up and off the elevator.

He went back to his kiosk. Chen Yuncheng opened the rolling shutter door halfway, and after he got in, he closed the door and locked it from the inside.

The lights in the kiosk outside had been turned off. He went straight through and entered the inner room, turning on an orange ceiling lamp on the roof.

Chen Yuncheng picked up his cup, walked to the water dispenser, squatted down to get the water, and at the same time took out his mobile phone and called Gu Yaojia. The two of them had nothing much to add, but Chen Yuncheng advised her not to be too nervous. Zhou Yan was an adult. If there was still no news tomorrow, he would accompany her to the police.

After the phone call, the water glass was also filled. Chen Yuncheng got up and picked up the glass of water, drank all the warm water down, put the glass on the table and walked toward the bathroom.

The inner room of his kiosk only had one living space and a bathroom.

The room was not very small, but the entire wall was lined with cardboard boxes, which were filled with drinks, beer, and other goods. The only space was left for a bed, a clothing wardrobe, and a small square table against the wall.

Chen Yuncheng didn’t watch TV again after taking a shower, but just lay on the bed and played with his mobile phone. He was actually a little absent-minded, not because of Zhou Yan’s matters, but due to the man he met at the entrance of KTV today.

The moment the two brushed past each other, he felt that he knew the man, so he stopped and kept looking at the man’s back, hoping that the other party would also still recognize him.

But when the man left without looking back, Chen Yuncheng began to be uncertain again. He thought to himself that they had been separated for sixteen years, and both of them were still children when they were separated. Was that person really the same person as the one that he remembered?

Chen Yuncheng put down the phone and decided to temporarily put aside the distracting thoughts in his head and have a good sleep. He lay on his back on the bed and put his arms under his head and thought to himself, why does it matter if that person was Ning Junyan? To him, that life has long been an experience of the past.

Chen Yuncheng woke up the next morning and opened the kiosk first as usual. He then walked to the noodle shop two shops away to eat noodles.

He sat at the table near the door and exchanged a few words with the boss who cooked the noodles. When his noodles had just been served, a man sat beside his table.

Chen Yuncheng raised his head and saw that the person sitting opposite was Zhou Yan.

Zhou Yan looked haggard as he called out, “Cheng ge.”

Chen Yuncheng took out a pair of chopsticks from the chopstick holder, stirred the beef noodles first, and then said, “Your wife has been looking for you all night.”

Zhou Yan said, “My phone is out of battery.” After speaking, he saw that Chen Yuncheng’s face did not look very good and added, “I called her.”

Chen Yuncheng picked up a chopstick and put the noodles into his mouth. After swallowing it all, he asked Zhou Yan, “Have you had breakfast?”

       Zhou Yan said, “Not yet.”

Chen Yuncheng raised his hand to call out to the boss, “Cook another bowl of beef noodles.”

Zhou Yan didn’t refuse. He looked like he was hungry. As soon as the noodles came up, he picked up his chopsticks and ate the noodles.

Chen Yuncheng finished his bowl of noodles first and then sat beside him. He leaned on the back of the chair and looked at him.

It was not until Zhou Yan finished eating the noodles when Chen Yuncheng asked him, “Are you full?”

Zhou Yan took out a tissue to wipe his mouth and nodded.

Chen Yuncheng said, “Do you have something to tell me?”

Zhou Yan folded the used tissues and put them on the table before staring at the half bowl of noodle soup left in the bowl, and said, “Cheng ge, can you lend me some money?”

Chen Yuncheng asked him, “What’s the matter?”

Zhou Yan said, “My son is sick.”

Chen Yuncheng was a little surprised, “Sick? Is it serious?”

Zhou Yan said, “It’s a heart problem. We can do surgery, but I can’t get that much money right now.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”

Zhou Yan’s expression was a little painful, he raised his hand and rubbed his face vigorously, “I know you don’t have much money, so at first I wanted to borrow it from Yong ge, but I got into an argument with him and now I lost my job, so I really have no choice.”

Chen Yuncheng whispered, “Zhang Wenyong was not originally a good person.”

Zhou Yan said, “I can’t help it either.”

Chen Yuncheng asked him, “How much money do you need?”

Zhou Yan said, “At least a hundred thousand.”

Chen Yuncheng looked at him, “How could I have so much money?”

       Zhou Yan did not speak.

Chen Yuncheng sighed heavily and stood up. He paid the money for the noodles first, stretched out his hand to pull Zhou Yan up, and said, “Let’s go.”

“Cheng ge?” Zhou Yan looked a little surprised.

Chen Yuncheng didn’t say much. He took Zhou Yan back to his kiosk and went into the inner room alone. He came out after a while, and then took Zhou Yan to a nearby bank ATM to withdraw 30,000 yuan.

When handing over the money to Zhou Yan, Chen Yuncheng said, “I only have this much money. Keep and take care of the money yourself. Go do what you have to do.”

Zhou Yan couldn’t reach out to take the money for a long time.

       Chen Yuncheng said, “What’s wrong?”

Zhou Yan said, “I feel very bad for you, it’s all the money you’ve worked hard to save for the past two years.”

Chen Yuncheng shoved the money to Zhou Yan and said in a flat tone, “Take it and pay it back slowly. I don’t need the money now anyway.”

Zhou Yan and Chen Yuncheng walked out of the bank together. Chen Yuncheng walked in front with his hands in his pockets. Zhou Yan caught up with him from the side and said, “Cheng ge, are you still not thinking about finding a girlfriend?”

Chen Yuncheng simply said “ah” without saying much.

Zhou Yan added, “I will definitely return the money to you as soon as possible.”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t say anything. When he was walking around the corner, he suddenly stopped and said to Zhou Yan, “Last night, I seem to have seen—”

       “Who?” Zhou Yan was puzzled.

Chen Yuncheng didn’t go on. Not far ahead was his kiosk, and he saw a police car parked on the side of the road.

Zhou Yan followed his line of sight and saw the police carHe suddenly asked nervously, “Are the police troubling you?”

Chen Yuncheng shook his head. He patted Zhou Yan on the shoulder, told him to go first, and then walked towards the kiosk alone.

When he approached the kiosk, Chen Yuncheng first looked down at the police car and saw that it was empty. He then saw a slender figure standing against the glass container in the kiosk.

“Officer Long,” Chen Yuncheng called out, his tone becoming enthusiastic unconsciously.

Long Zhanyu turned his head to look at him, his slender fingers bent up and knocked on the glass of the counter. He said, “Get me a pack of cigarettes.”

Chen Yuncheng smiled and said, “Okay, wait a moment.”

When Chen Yuncheng went to the counter to get the cigarette, Long Zhanyu kept looking at him. When Chen Yuncheng turned his head, he saw Long Zhanyu’s dark eyes staring at him without blinking. He handed the cigarette over and said, “The brand you always smoke.”

Long Zhanyu unzipped his down jacket and took out his mobile phone from his inner bag to pay.

Chen Yuncheng asked, “Were you on duty last night? Why are you so early today?”

Long Zhanyu gave a vague “um” and said, “Have you seen Zhang Wenyong recently?”

Chen Yuncheng hesitated for a moment, and decided to tell the truth, “I went to him yesterday and couldn’t find him.”

Long Zhanyu took out a cigarette, put it in his mouth, and approached Chen Yuncheng, “Why were you looking for him?”

Chen Yuncheng reached out, picked up the lighter on the counter and helped Long Zhanyu lit the cigarette he was biting at the corner of his mouth. He then said, “Something happened to one of my brothers. I wanted to ask him, but I didn’t even see him.”

Long Zhanyu slowly exhaled smoke from the corner of his mouth, his eyes fixed on Chen Yuncheng, “Be honest.”

Chen Yuncheng said in a serious tone, “I pledge to the authorities that I am being 100% honest.”

Long Zhanyu moved away from the front of the counter.

Chen Yuncheng suddenly said, “Officer Long, you look so good-looking. Aren’t you afraid of being harassed when you are handling a case?”

Long Zhanyu grinned, turned, and walked outside the kiosk. He opened the driver’s door of the police car and sat inside.

Chen Yuncheng walked to the door, waved his hand, and said, “Take care.”

Chapter 1

TL: Hoenimochi
TLC: Hoenibean

Chen Yuncheng saw the little girl at the intersection for the second time today.

The little girl looked seven or eight years old, perhaps older than that. Because she was very thin, the trousers on her legs looked very loose. Although the clothes were not dirty, they seemed to have been washed so many times that the colour was faded.

Usually, she appeared at the intersection when the commute was most crowded, and crossed the road with a group of passers-by, looking for a target to strike with her two big eyes. But her luck was very bad. Yesterday, Chen Yuncheng saw her going back and forth at the intersection many times and couldn’t find any success. Today, when she just stretched out her hand, a traffic policeman came to the intersection on a motorcycle to direct the traffic. She was startled and hurriedly retracted her hand, putting her hands into her jacket pockets, and slowly left along the street.

Chen Yuncheng retracted his gaze, and his two legs on the chair were crossed. He leaned back his body, his arms behind his head, and his two long legs placed on the counter as he continued to watch the ball game on the TV.

Up until a regular customer came to buy cigarettes. Chen Yuncheng put his legs down from the counter and opened the glass cabinet to get him cigarettes.

The elderly customer took the cigarette case with one hand, touched the lighter with the other, and said, “The temperature has cooled these two days.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Yeah, it’s time to get a down jacket to wear.”

The elderly customer nodded. He grabbed the lighter on his body, lit a cigarette and walked out.

He didn’t know if it was because the weather was too cold, but from the past two days, at 8 or 9 o’clock in the evening, Chen Yuncheng’s kiosk would be almost out of goods. He would pull down the shutter halfway down so that the light and sound from the store could pass through the lower half of the door. This was so that the old customers who come to buy cigarettes could still knock on the roll-up door outside and then lower their heads before entering the shop.

This way, Chen Yuncheng wouldn’t get too cold from sitting inside and watching TV. The small heater placed by his feet would be enough to warm the entire small shop’s tiny area.

There was a spy war movie on the TV, and Chen Yuncheng watched it a little carelessly until he suddenly heard someone knocking on the rolling shutter door. He subconsciously sat up straight and shouted, “Just come in, we’re not closed yet.”

A young woman with a child in her arms struggled to get in under the shutters.

“Jiajia?” Chen Yuncheng was a little surprised, “What’s going on?”

The woman’s name was Gu Yaojia. Actually, Chen Yuncheng didn’t know her full name. He only knew that she was Zhou Yan’s girlfriend, and Zhou Yan usually called her Jiajia so he also copied him and called her Jiajia.

Gu Yaojia’s hair was a little messy. She patted her hair first and said unsteadily, “Cheng ge, have you seen Zhou Yan today?”

       Chen Yuncheng shook his head.

The child in Gu Yaojia’s arms stretched her arms restlessly. She looked down at the child and said, “He hasn’t come back and I can’t reach him on the phone. I don’t know where he’s gone.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “He didn’t come to me.”

Gu Yaojia asked, “Then can you help me look for him?”

Chen Yuncheng picked up his mobile phone, dialled Zhou Yan’s number first and found that the other party’s mobile phone was off. He then looked at Gu Yaojia and asked, “Could he have gone to KTV1Karaoke Centre?”

       “He resigned,” Gu Yaojia said.

“Resigned?” Chen Yuncheng asked strangely, “Why did he resign?”

       Gu Yaojia shook her head.

Chen Yuncheng hesitated for a moment, then dialled Zhang Wenyong’s phone with his mobile phone, but the other party didn’t answer after several rings. He hung up the phone, looked at Gu Yaojia’s pitiful appearance with the child in her arms and said, “I’ll go to KTV to find someone to ask. Do you want to come with me?”

Gu Yaojia said, “I’m not going, the baby is not feeling well.”

Chen Yuncheng nodded, “Then go back first.”

Gu Yaojia took the child and left first.

Chen Yuncheng turned off the ceiling lights in the store. When he got out from under the shutter door, he saw Gu Yaojia’s back.

Gu Yaojia looked very young. Even if she had a child, Chen Yuncheng suspected that she was still under twenty years old. She and Zhou Yan moved in together for about three months, she then became pregnant and gave birth to a child. The two rented a place in an old neighbourhood only a few minutes away from Chen Yuncheng’s small shop and they had not obtained a marriage license yet.

Chen Yuncheng pulled down the rolling shutter door, stepped on it with his foot, and locked it from the outside. He then wrapped his down jacket tightly around himself and walked towards the subway station.

It had been almost three years since he bought this down jacket. It was not expensive when he bought it. From time to time, a feather would come out from the fabric. Now, Chen Yuncheng didn’t know if it was psychological, but he always felt that the jacket was getting thinner and thinner.

I should buy a new one in a few days, Chen Yuncheng thought about it while walking forward.

No matter how cold the weather was outside, the subway station was still warm, and even after the rush hour, the flow of people had not decreased too much. Chen Yuncheng squeezed into the subway carriage but didn’t get a seat. He stood in the corner, took out his mobile phone and glanced at it. He didn’t see Zhang Wenyong returning his call. In fact, he and Zhang Wenyong hadn’t been in contact for a long time. If it wasn’t for Zhou Yan’s matter, he would not be very willing to contact Zhang Wenyong.

The KTV where Zhou Yan worked was called Glorious World. It was a newly opened KTV located on a street full of bars and restaurants. Zhou Yan went to work for Zhang Wenyong about three months ago. He worked as a waiter at the KTV, and it was always Zhang Wenyong’s thugs who were making trouble.

The door of KTV had two automatic glass doors. When people approached, the doors naturally opened to both sides. The floor in the middle was covered with a red carpet, and written in big, vulgar yellow letters were: Welcome.

When Chen Yuncheng entered, he passed a man who was walking out. When they were a little closer, the both of them turned aside.

The man was taller than Chen Yuncheng. Chen Yuncheng himself was 1.81 meters. He guessed that the other party was around 1.87 to 1.88 meters. He was wearing a long black coat, and the leather shoes under his feet were dark and shiny.

The moment he brushed past, Chen Yuncheng looked up at the man subconsciously. Just as the man looked down at him, Chen Yuncheng saw that handsome and slightly indifferent face.

Chen Yuncheng was stunned for a moment and stopped, but the man had already raised his head and walked out. When Chen Yuncheng looked back, he could only see that man’s straight back and smelled a very light and chilling perfume.

The glass door slowly closed. Chen Yuncheng stood still and saw the man walking towards a dark grey Land Rover parked on the side of the road. The Land Rover flashed its lights as the man approached.

Through the glass door, Chen Yuncheng kept looking as the man got into the car. He then took a deep breath, turned and walked inside.

A waiter greeted him and asked him if he would be singing.

Chen Yuncheng shook his head, saw a familiar face at the service bar, walked over and asked, “Xiao Ou, is Yong ge here?”

Xiao Ou, who was wearing a waiter uniform at the bar, raised his head, saw Chen Yuncheng’s face, and was instantly a little surprised. He said, “Cheng ge, I haven’t seen you for a long time.”

Chen Yuncheng smiled and asked again, “Yong ge is not here today?”

Xiao Ou shook his head, “There’s generally nothing to do now, so Yong ge didn’t come.” After speaking, he said tentatively, “Cheng ge, just call Yong ge directly if you need anything.”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t say anything about Zhang Wenyong not answering his phone, but asked, “Where is Zhou Yan? Have you seen him today?”

Xiao Ou said, “Zhou Yan has resigned for several days.”

Chen Yuncheng remembered what Zhou Yan’s girlfriend said. It turned out that Zhou Yan had really resigned. He asked, “Why did Zhou Yan resign?”

Xiao Ou shook his head. He lowered his head and mechanically sorted out the receipts in his hand, then raised his head, lowered his voice and said to Chen Yuncheng, “I heard Zhou Yan and Yong ge quarrelled a few days ago. I don’t know if this was the cause of his resignation.”

Chen Yuncheng then asked, “What were they arguing about?”

Xiao Ou whispered, “I don’t know, but I heard that Zhou Yan wanted to borrow money.”

Chen Yuncheng nodded, and he said to Xiao Ou, “Thank you.” Before walking out of the KTV hall.

When he went out, Chen Yuncheng took out his mobile phone again and tried to dial Zhou Yan’s number, but it still wasn’t turned on. He didn’t notice that the Land Rover that the man in the black coat had just gotten into was still parked on the side of the road with the lights off and hadn’t moved at all.
