The Dragon Egg I Nurtured for a Thousand Years Finally Hatched

Chapter 32 – No More Phoenixes

Chapter 32: No More Phoenixes

In the room, a black dragon was tightly coiled around its phoenix, its dark golden dragon eyes filled with stubbornness.

Su Muluo met its gaze for a few seconds and said, “Alright, alright, three phoenixes, just three phoenixes, no more than that!”

The black dragon immediately let out a delighted “Aow” and transformed back into a human, happily hugging its phoenix.

Su Muluo gave his head a light pat and said, “I knew you’d take advantage of me.”

Long Ling held him without a word, thinking that although the phoenix claimed not to want to be taken advantage of, it still let him hold it. Even the pat on his head was gentle.

The phoenix liked him.

Thinking of this, he smiled with great pleasure.

Lin Chengcheng had been waiting outside for a few minutes. When he saw Su Muluo and Long Ling coming out of the staff lounge, his expression tensed immediately.

Su Muluo sat down in front of him and said, “I have a proposal. I don’t know if you’re willing to accept it.”

Lin Chengcheng, recognizing the tone of the boss, knew that he intended to help him. He was overjoyed and said without hesitation, “Accept, accept! Boss, I’ll accept whatever you say!”

Su Muluo replied, “Hold on, let me explain first.”

“Many years ago, your father passed away unexpectedly. Since then, the bird clan has split into two factions—one led by the Grand Elder and the other by your father’s faction. The faction that wants to kill you today is likely the Grand Elder’s faction. The faction that truly wants to bring you back and let you inherit the clan leader position is your father’s faction.”

According to Su Muluo’s deduction, although Feng Xuan was an elder of the bird clan, he was aligned with the former clan leader’s faction. What he did not expect was that his disciple, Muge, was actually an undercover agent for the Grand Elder, and his subordinates were all under Muge’s control.

When Feng Xuan saw Su Muluo at the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings, he thought Su Muluo was Feng Hen’s illegitimate child. However, Muge, who was with him and was hiding Feng Hen’s relics, knew Su Muluo was not. Still, to test Su Muluo, Muge sent a few bird demons to attack him. After discovering Su Muluo’s profound strength, he was more certain that Su Muluo was not an illegitimate child, but did not inform Feng Xuan.

Later, Feng Xuan learned from Su Muluo that the bird clan had sent someone to attack him. Although he became suspicious, he did not doubt his disciple, but simply asked Muge to investigate. His trust in Muge ultimately led to his own demise.

After hearing Su Muluo’s words, Lin Chengcheng felt a wave of fear.

When his demon power awakened, it had already attracted the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings’s attention. Although the first to find him was the boss, even without the boss, the bureau would have soon discovered him and found out that he was the person the bird clan was searching for.

Or, looking further back, if he hadn’t drunk the boss’s special coffee, perhaps his demon power wouldn’t have awakened. But since Muge had his father’s relics, even if he hadn’t awakened his demon power, with the bird clan’s spies in Lin Cheng, finding him would have been just a matter of time.

Moreover, if he hadn’t awakened his demon power, he would have been an ordinary person with no parents and few friends. Muge wouldn’t have needed to wait for him to leave Lin Cheng; he could have simply killed him upon finding him.

It was because he had awakened his demon power and became a half-demon, and thus attracted the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings’s attention, that Muge was wary of the bureau and wouldn’t act against him immediately.

Thinking of this, Lin Chengcheng began to feel relieved. Luckily, he met the boss. Without the boss, he would have died more than once by now.

Seeing that he had processed the information, Su Muluo continued, “Now, what I’m thinking is, since the elder faction wants to kill you and knows about your existence, they will definitely keep sending people after you. Hiding won’t help. So, it’s better for you to return to the bird clan. As long as the faction that your father was part of knows about you, they will do everything they can to protect you. With their help, you’ll be safer.”

Lin Chengcheng hesitated and said, “But I don’t even know where the bird clan is. I can’t make it there on my own.”

Su Muluo replied, “I can take you there.” Seeing Lin Chengcheng’s eyes light up, he added, “But I also have a condition. I want to see that phoenix relic. Just see it, I won’t ask for it.”

“Sure! No problem!” Lin Chengcheng said excitedly, “If we can find that phoenix relic, I’ll definitely ask them to give it to you! If they refuse, then I’ll steal it for you!”

Su Muluo was somewhat surprised by how readily Lin Chengcheng agreed. He thought for a moment and said, “But even if you go back, it won’t be a one-time solution. After all, you’ll still have to face the elder faction.”

Lin Chengcheng nodded and said, “I know. But what else can I do if I don’t go back? I can’t keep troubling you, boss. If it’s just me alone, I won’t survive till tomorrow.”

As Su Muluo said, staying here was just waiting to die. If he could return to the bird clan and receive protection from his father’s faction, it would offer a glimmer of hope.

Moreover, he didn’t want to hide like a turtle forever. Rather than living in fear and discomfort, it was better to face the situation with courage… at least that way, he would retain some dignity.

“I want to go back, not only to save my life but also to find out the cause of my parents’ deaths,” Lin Chengcheng said, pausing before adding, “And to apologize to my father’s wife.”

Su Muluo clasped his hands and listened as he continued, “I don’t know what exactly happened back then. To me, it seemed like my father was with my mother after he married… To his wife, I might just be an annoying child from an affair.”

The black cat looked up at him, and he stroked the black cat, slowly saying, “I don’t know why my father chose my mother back then, but in any case, he still hurt his wife.”

“So I want to go back. Even if she dislikes me, I want to say I’m sorry,” Lin Chengcheng said, then fell silent for a second before whispering, “If she’s unwilling to forgive me… then I’ll have to run away.”

After hearing this, Su Muluo said, “Your grandmother must have really liked you because she raised you so well.” Then he added, “Don’t worry. Since I promised to take you back, I’ll ensure your safety. After all, we’re helping each other.”

Lin Chengcheng thought to himself that it wasn’t entirely true. The boss was endlessly helping him, the burden. He resolved to find that phoenix relic once he returned to the bird clan to repay the boss’s kindness.

With the decision made, Su Muluo arranged for Lin Chengcheng to stay in a hotel. A magical barrier was placed at the entrance to ensure that no one could harm Lin Chengcheng or track him down.

After leaving the hotel, Su Muluo poked Long Ling and said, “Change back. I want to take you somewhere.”

Before they set off, he needed to take his dragon to do something.

Long Ling replied, “Okay.”

Without asking where they were going, he transformed back into a little black dragon and slipped into the pocket of his phoenix’s clothing.

Su Muluo patted the little dragon and walked out at a leisurely pace.

Soon, the little black dragon poked its head out of the pocket and made a “woof” sound.

Why haven’t they arrived yet?

Su Muluo calmly said, “We’re almost there.”

He then pressed the little dragon back into the pocket.

The little black dragon was confused, curling up its tail in the pocket, feeling both curious and cautious.

It felt like there was nothing good about this.

After a while, it heard its phoenix’s voice say, “Okay, we’ve arrived.”

The little black dragon slowly emerged from the pocket and looked up—

The Bureau of Extraordinary Beings.

The little black dragon: “……”

The little black dragon: “Woof!!”

It immediately wanted to scramble out of the pocket and flee quickly, but Su Muluo was faster and held it down.

“This time, there’s nothing wrong. Really,” Su Muluo comforted. “I just want you to see the Mirror of Origin.”

The little black dragon: “Woof!”

It didn’t like it!

It didn’t want to see it!

It hated the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings!!

“Just stay here for a little while,” Su Muluo said, “It won’t take long to look at the Mirror of Origin.”

As he spoke, he patted the little black dragon’s head, stroking it from start to finish. The little dragon angrily hugged his hand.

It wasn’t that it didn’t want to see the Mirror of Origin; after all, it was a bit curious about its past with the phoenix.

But it just didn’t like the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings, very much so.

Every time it came here, nothing good ever happened!

A few minutes later, the little black dragon was reluctantly soothed by Su Muluo, lying in the phoenix’s palm, its tail swishing back and forth, its dark golden dragon eyes filled with displeasure.

Su Muluo almost laughed. When he had passed by the hospital before, he had seen many children crying loudly, clinging to their parents because they didn’t want a shot… it seemed the little black dragon was pretty much like them.

So he comforted the little dragon again and took it inside.

He had made prior arrangements with Liu He before coming to the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings. Today, Liu He looked very happy and said, “Mr. Su, your timing is perfect. The day before yesterday, the neighboring city just applied to the headquarters for the Mirror of Origin, so I borrowed it today.”

The Mirror of Origin was usually managed by the headquarters of the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings. After Su Muluo borrowed it last time, Liu He had returned it to the headquarters. But today, she was so happy, it surely wasn’t just because she had borrowed the Mirror of Origin from the neighboring city.

As before, Su Muluo entered the room where the Mirror of Origin was kept. As soon as he stepped in, he stopped in his tracks.

The last time he saw the Mirror of Origin, it was intact. Now, it was in a pitiful state, missing a corner.

Su Muluo asked, “I didn’t break this, did I?”

Liu He chuckled and said, “Of course not. It was broken by the deputy director of the neighboring city. He used this mirror to see his wife cheating on him, and she was with his two younger brothers. He couldn’t control himself on the spot… hahahaha!”

Su Muluo: “……”

It sounded like Liu He was quite pleased.

Liu He also realized she had been a bit too ecstatic and immediately cleared her throat, explaining seriously, “The deputy director has always had issues with us. When our Lincheng branch was rated as the ‘Most Uncivilized Organization,’ he led the mocking. We’ve been unhappy with him for a long time.”

“A few days from now is the new round of ‘Most Uncivilized Organization’ selection. He broke the Mirror of Origin yesterday, and their branch will definitely get blamed for it. We finally get to laugh at him.”

Liu He couldn’t help but laugh again.

She was absolutely thrilled.

Su Muluo looked at the somewhat sorry-looking Mirror of Origin and asked curiously, “Can it still be used?”

“It can still be used, it can still be used. It was just dropped, it doesn’t affect it at all!” Liu He said. “I’ll send it back to headquarters for repair tomorrow. Mr. Su, you can take your time. I’ll step out first.”

She left with a very light step, and after she was gone, Su Muluo took the little black dragon out.

The little black dragon transformed back into human form, glanced at his phoenix, and picked up the Mirror of Origin.

Then he stood there, unmoving.

Su Muluo stood beside him, observing, and couldn’t help but wonder if he had looked like this the last time he saw the Mirror of Origin.

What did the dragon see… Could it see that silver-haired phoenix?

While Su Muluo was lost in thought, Long Ling turned his head and fixed his gaze on him.

Su Muluo was slightly surprised, “So soon?”

He checked his phone and found that it hadn’t been a minute since Long Ling picked up the Mirror of Origin. He was even more surprised: “It hasn’t even been a minute. What did you see?”

“…” Long Ling was silent for a moment before suddenly saying, “I don’t want the phoenix anymore.”

Su Muluo: “?”

Long Ling looked at him with a hint of grievance, “The phoenix has other lovers now. Anyway, I don’t want the phoenix anymore.”

Su Muluo: “???”

At that moment, he almost thought history was repeating itself. His mind went blank, unsure of how to respond. But the next second, Long Ling started to laugh.

“Just kidding,” Long Ling said with a hint of mischievous satisfaction in his eyes, as if he had played a successful prank, “I didn’t see anything.”

Su Muluo: “…”

He felt like he wanted to twist the little dragon into a pretzel right then and there, but he held back after hearing Long Ling’s follow-up words. He frowned and said, “What did you say?”

Long Ling blinked and said, “I didn’t see anything.”

He spread the Mirror of Origin out in front of Su Muluo and continued, “And look, phoenix, it doesn’t even reflect my face.”

Su Muluo looked down. Since he had used the Mirror of Origin before, it didn’t react to him this time. However, it was strange that it showed his face but not Long Ling’s.

What was going on?

Su Muluo was puzzled. He took the Mirror of Origin and looked at himself, then turned it towards Long Ling.

Long Ling stood quietly in place, his face full of innocence.

“…” Su Muluo was silent for a while and said, “Do you not have anyone important at all?”

Long Ling: “???”

Without waiting for Su Muluo to say anything more, he immediately said, “How could that be!”

Then he tightly hugged Su Muluo with such force that it seemed he was afraid his phoenix might ignore him and run away. “I love the phoenix the most! The phoenix is the most important person to me. Besides the phoenix, no one else is!”

His voice was deep, filled with undeniable certainty and seriousness, with a hint of grievance. Su Muluo patted his head and smiled, “I know.”

He was just saying it casually and did not doubt his dragon’s feelings for him. It was just that the Mirror of Origin was truly strange… Could it be that it was broken by the deputy director from the neighboring city?

With this question in mind, Su Muluo found Liu He outside and told her about the situation with the Mirror of Origin.

Liu He was first startled when she saw Long Ling, and then was even more shocked when she heard about the Mirror of Origin. She looked horrified and said, “It’s impossible! Every living person should appear on the Mirror of Origin, and it’s been a thousand years without this mirror ever being broken!”

Su Muluo said, “Could it be that it’s been dropped too many times before?”

“Well… that might be possible,” Liu He murmured. “Could it really be broken by that bald deputy director?”

“Mr. Su, could I see the mirror?”

Su Muluo nodded and looked at Long Ling.

Long Ling picked up the Mirror of Origin from the table, intending to hand it to his phoenix. However, as soon as he raised his hand, there was a “crack” sound—

The smooth surface of the Mirror of Origin shattered into several pieces in his hand.

It was broken.

Su Muluo: “…”

Long Ling: “…”

Liu He: “…………”

Liu He stared in disbelief as the Mirror of Origin cracked on its own, as if she saw the “Most Uncivilized Organization” green and dirty flag, the bald deputy director from the neighboring city’s ruthless mockery, her own bureau chief’s “kind and friendly” gaze, and that year-end bonus with wings flying away…

Finally, she couldn’t hold back and burst into tears.

Chapter 31 – Three kisses

Chapter 31: Three kisses

A snow-white, beautiful, soft little bird landed in his palm, and suddenly, Long Ling couldn’t take his eyes off it.

His first reaction was that his phoenix was so beautiful and cute.

His second reaction was, oh no, the phoenix was indeed drunk. When it sobered up the next day, it might turn him into a twisted knot.

The little phoenix, unaware of Long Ling’s thoughts, stared at him with its ruby-like, crystal-clear eyes for a few seconds before tilting its head.

“Chirp?”

Aren’t you going to touch my feathers?

Long Ling remained still.

He knew that in the eyes of the phoenix tribe, touching feathers was the most intimate thing, even more intimate than certain other things. So, before meeting someone they truly like, and before fully entrusting themselves to that person, they would never easily reveal their feathers or let anyone touch them.

Knowing this, he preferred to touch the soft and fluffy feathers of his phoenix when it was sober, rather than taking advantage while his phoenix was muddled from drink.

Seeing that Long Ling remained unmoved, the little phoenix, puzzled, folded its wings and hopped around in his palm, occasionally looking up and giving him a few “chirps.”

Long Ling: “……”

It’s really so cute!

So, he lifted his hand and gently stroked the phoenix’s… head.

The little phoenix: “Chirp.”

Its small head rubbed against Long Ling’s fingertips and then nestled into his palm, curling up like a baby bird returning to its nest, full of affection.

Long Ling’s dark golden eyes were filled with a smile. Though his phoenix was drunk, it had revealed its true feelings to him.

The phoenix liked him, was attached to him, and at the bottom of its heart, was willing to show its feathers and let him touch them.

Everything was falling into place, it was almost there.

Long Ling felt a heart full of joy. He transformed back into his dragon form and encircled his phoenix, as if guarding his most precious treasure, silently and attentively.

The little phoenix yawned slightly, found a comfortable spot on the black dragon, and soon fell asleep.

After a night passed, the phoenix woke up sober and reverted to human form on its own.

Then came a long silence.

What did he do last night?

Su Muluo lowered his head and saw the dragon coiled around his waist. The memories of last night came flooding back… and then he froze in place.

The black dragon opened its eyes at that moment, seeing his phoenix, now human, lazily and affectionately wrapping its arms around his waist.

“Phoenix,” Long Ling rested his chin on Su Muluo’s shoulder and laughed in his ear, “Good morning.”

Su Muluo: “……”

He didn’t feel good at all!

Who knows why he got drunk after just a few sips of beer yesterday, reverted to his original form in front of the dragon, and let the dragon touch his feathers… and he didn’t even know if the dragon actually touched them!

Just thinking about it made him very angry!

So, with a blank expression, he gave Long Ling a push. “Go away, don’t hug me.”

Long Ling knew his phoenix would definitely be grumpy upon waking, but even if it was grumpy, his tone remained soft, with a smile on his face as he buried his face in the phoenix’s shoulder.

“Not letting go,” he said, “The phoenix was so cute last night.”

Su Muluo: “?”

He immediately gave Long Ling another tap on the head, but Long Ling grabbed his wrist and gently stroked his fair skin with his fingertips.

“I’m not happy,” Su Muluo said, sulking, “You took advantage of me.”

Long Ling responded with a casual “Oh,” and without any guilt, he said, “Then the phoenix can take advantage of me too.”

Su Muluo stared at him for a few seconds and said, “I don’t want to take advantage of you. You’re all dark and covered in scales, there’s nothing to take advantage of.”

Long Ling laughed, “But the phoenix used to pinch my horns and touch my scales.”

Su Muluo: “That’s because you let me pinch you!”

Long Ling: “I didn’t let the phoenix pinch me; it clearly thought I was cute and was tempted by my body!”

There was a hint of pride in his tone.

Su Muluo: “……”

Su Muluo ignored him.

Because he was still a bit dizzy from last night’s drinking, he didn’t want to chat much with this dragon. Long Ling also knew that if it were the usual phoenix, it might have already twisted him into a knot.

But then he thought, maybe not, since the phoenix didn’t seem angry about last night… It seemed his guess was right; his phoenix was indeed willing to let him touch its feathers.

With that thought, Long Ling became happy again. He got out of bed and made a cup of honey water for his phoenix.

“Have some sweet water,” he said, “It will make you feel better.”

Su Muluo didn’t move and was fed half a cup of honey water by Long Ling. Still feeling a bit sleepy, he said, “I want to sleep.”

Long Ling: “Then sleep. I’ll stay with you.”

Su Muluo murmured, burying himself back under the warm covers, and then remembered something with a bit of joy, “I didn’t lose any feathers yesterday.”

Long Ling boastfully said, “I told you, as long as I’m by your side, there won’t be any problems.”

Su Muluo glanced at him and pulled the blanket over his head, too lazy to deal with the dragon.

It was nine in the morning. Su Muluo originally wanted to sleep a bit longer and go to the coffee shop later… but things didn’t go as planned, and soon he opened his eyes again.

The mark he had left for Lin Chengcheng had reacted.

On the other side, Lin Chengcheng, holding a black cat, was fleeing in distress through the forest.

Behind him, the sounds of flapping bird wings grew closer and closer. Lin Chengcheng could even imagine their expressions, like cats toying with mice, leisurely and casually.

What should he do? Will he die here? What should he do?

Lin Chengcheng was full of anxiety and even began to wish he could grow wings like those bird demons. But no matter how much he wished, it was of no use. His hope turned into despair, gradually consuming his anxious heart.

The black cat curled up in his arms, probably squeezed too tightly, let out a few anxious meows.

Hearing the cat’s meow, Lin Chengcheng looked down at it.

This was his cat, which he had only brought home a few days ago, thinking it would be the start of a new life… but now, everything was coming to an end.

Lin Chengcheng closed his eyes and said softly, “Run as far as you can.”

Then he let go, allowing the black cat to fall to the ground while he himself stopped in his tracks.

The sound of flapping bird wings was already closing in behind him, just a meter away. At that moment, Lin Chengcheng felt as if the Grim Reaper’s scythe was hanging over his head. He couldn’t help but close his eyes.

The next second, the sound of wings and wind vanished. Several bodies fell heavily to the ground and then rolled down the hillside.

Lin Chengcheng: “……”

He stood frozen in place, unable to react for a moment.

The black cat circled around his feet, biting his pant leg and letting out a soft “meow.”

The cat’s meow seemed to have a magical power, pulling Lin Chengcheng’s soul back from the brink. He shivered and suddenly came to his senses, then cried out loudly, hugging his cat tightly and burying his face in its fluffy fur.

Heaven didn’t abandon me! Indeed, heaven didn’t abandon me!

Having escaped death, his cold limbs began to warm up again. He felt his blood boiling, a surge of energy coursing through his veins and straight to his brain.

Could I be the protagonist of legends, possessing a special bloodline, and now that my bloodline has awakened, I am destined to be the greatest, invincible in the world?!

Lin Chengcheng jumped up from the ground, and at that moment, he almost wanted to put his hands on his hips and laugh three times at the sky—

Then he looked up and saw two people standing in front of him.

“…… Boss?!” Lin Chengcheng exclaimed, “Why is it you again?!”

……

Moments later, Lin Chengcheng squatted under a tree, banging his head against it.

Several unconscious bird demons lay in the forest, and Su Muluo glanced around before saying to Long Ling, “Next time, could you not use so much force?”

Long Ling innocently replied, “I didn’t use much force. They were just too weak.”

Su Muluo was helpless. At least his dragon hadn’t really killed the bird demons; they were only seriously injured… That’s fine. It would probably be a long time before these bird demons woke up.

On the other side, Lin Chengcheng had recovered from his extreme embarrassment.

He had just thought he was some kind of genius protagonist, the chosen one, almost laughing triumphantly at the sky… Fortunately, his kind boss didn’t laugh at him or say anything about it.

But it was still so embarrassing!

Lin Chengcheng hugged his black cat tightly and squatted under the tree, unwilling to get up.

Su Muluo glanced at him and then said to Long Ling, “Let’s head back. Conceal the aura here so the bird tribe doesn’t discover our presence.”

Long Ling took his hand and said, “Don’t worry, with their strength, they won’t be able to find us.”

Half an hour later, the group returned to the coffee shop. Su Muluo closed the shop door and made a cup of coffee for Lin Chengcheng, who was still holding the black cat.

Lin Chengcheng accepted the coffee with repeated thanks. After taking a sip, he found that even though it wasn’t the special coffee, it was still very good.

He couldn’t help but sincerely praise, “Boss’s skills are really impressive. No wonder you’re a high-level expert hiding in plain sight.”

After the last encounter with the supernatural agency and this meeting, even if he was foolish, he could see that Su Muluo’s identity was extraordinary. He even guessed that the boss might be some kind of great figure, a daily demon-slayer and benefactor of the people.

Su Muluo saw through his thoughts and calmly said, “To be honest, I had a purpose in saving you.” He then added, “Tell me about your past.”

Lin Chengcheng was stunned by this and fell silent for a few seconds before taking another sip of coffee.

“When I was young, I lived with my grandmother in the deep mountains,” he said. “She wasn’t my biological grandmother, but she treated me very well, even better than a biological grandmother… But three years ago, she passed away.”

“Before she died, she told me that my parents had died in an accident shortly after I was born. She hoped I wouldn’t investigate my parents’ death and would live like an ordinary person. She also gave me an ID card and some money, saying it was what my mother had asked her to prepare before she died.”

Su Muluo asked, “Did she say anything about your identity?”

Lin Chengcheng shook his head and said, “After that, I came here with the ID card and the money and lived alone for two years until now.”

Yesterday, after being taken back by Mu Ge, they didn’t explain much, only telling him that he was the son of the former leader of the bird tribe and that they were going to take him back to the bird tribe. But he didn’t expect that as soon as their car left the forest, those bird tribe members would attack him.

“Who am I really?” Lin Chengcheng asked, holding the coffee cup, both apprehensive and confused. “Boss, why did they want to kill me, and why did I become a half-demon? I don’t have anything special about me; I’m just an ordinary person.”

“For the first part of your question, I’m not sure,” Su Muluo said, “but I can probably tell you about the second part.” He continued, “It’s because you drank my coffee.”

Lin Chengcheng: “……”

Huh?

Su Muluo cleared his throat and said, “I added some rare herbs to my coffee. For ordinary people, it can improve their constitution. But if a demon drinks it, their demonic power increases dramatically, as if undergoing a complete transformation.”

In reality, if a half-demon doesn’t awaken their demonic power in their youth, it’s very hard to awaken it later in life. Lin Chengcheng was already over twenty years old; he would have likely remained an ordinary person for the rest of his life until he drank his special coffee—especially since the phoenix feather essence in the coffee was also effective for half-demons.

Lin Chengcheng’s eyes widened in shock upon hearing this, his face full of disbelief. After a long pause, he finally managed to utter a sentence: “No wonder… no wonder I was able to carry fifty kilograms of rice and a sofa up the stairs that day!”

He had thought it was due to some special ability he had awakened!

And it turned out it really was!

Su Muluo continued, “It might be a coincidence, or perhaps your awakening drew the attention of the Bird Clan. In any case, they came here. However, not all the Bird Clan members want you dead, as they are divided into two factions.”

He informed Lin Chengcheng about the Bird Clan situation that Feng Xuan had told him about. Lin Chengcheng looked confused, but what concerned him the most was still his own background.

“Wait, what does that mean? My father was with my mother only after getting married?” It was as if his world had collapsed. He was deeply distressed. “Then… then doesn’t that make me a bastard??”

Su Muluo thought for a moment and said, “It seems that way.”

Lin Chengcheng’s mouth fell open, and he was momentarily at a loss for words.

Seeing Lin Chengcheng’s incredulous expression, Su Muluo comforted him, “But maybe the customs of the Bird Clan are different from human society, or perhaps your father had his reasons.”

After all, according to Feng Xuan, Feng Hen was forced to marry the eldest daughter of the elder, which was not his own choice.

“…Is that so?”

Lin Chengcheng weakly asked, feeling distressed as he held his head in his hands. After a few seconds, he looked up at Su Muluo and asked, “But boss, why did you save me?”

He clearly wanted to change the topic from his father. However, unfortunately, Su Muluo’s next question was related to his father.

“The Bird Clan has a treasure, a relic of the Phoenix Clan,” Su Muluo said. “I heard that this relic was taken by your father and is now with you, so they came to find you, hoping to see that relic.”

Lin Chengcheng was stunned. “A Phoenix relic? That sounds impressive!”

He tried to recall and added, “But I’ve never seen any Phoenix relic. All my parents left me was that ID card and some money.”

Su Muluo remained silent. In fact, he didn’t quite believe that Lin Chengcheng had what he was looking for.

Since it was a relic of the Phoenix Clan, it would definitely carry the aura of the Phoenix, which he should be able to sense. However, during their encounters, he had not detected such an aura on Lin Chengcheng.

If the relic wasn’t with Lin Chengcheng, could it still be with the Bird Clan… or perhaps the Bird Clan has clues about it?

Su Muluo fell into deep thought. Lin Chengcheng looked at him anxiously and said after a while, “Boss, what should I do next? The Bird Clan still wants to kill me. Where can I hide?”

Su Muluo looked at him and then glanced at Long Ling.

Long Ling had been quiet, just listening to the interaction between his Phoenix and Lin Chengcheng. Upon meeting Su Muluo’s gaze, he instantly understood his intent.

He immediately frowned, looking displeased.

Su Muluo clicked his tongue.

He then turned to Lin Chengcheng and said, “Wait a moment. We need to discuss this.”

Lin Chengcheng, holding his coffee, looked confused. “Oh, okay. Boss, take your time discussing.”

In fact, when he asked that question earlier, he was seeking protection from Su Muluo. He could tell that this coffee shop owner was no ordinary person, and his boyfriend seemed very powerful too… Moreover, they were now the only ones who could offer him protection.

If he could stay with the boss, even returning to the Bird Clan would be safe.

Lin Chengcheng hugged his black cat and thought silently.

It would be great if the boss could help him… He would be willing to repay him even if it meant going through fire and water.

In the employee lounge, Qian Sui had already left, so only Su Muluo and Long Ling were present.

Su Muluo looked at the displeased dragon and cleared his throat. “I want to go to the Bird Clan.”

Long Ling frowned. “There’s no need for the Phoenix to get involved in the affairs of the Bird Clan. What does it have to do with us?”

“It might not have much to do with us,” Su Muluo said, “but maybe I can find the Phoenix relic there.”

He wasn’t particularly interested in obtaining the relic; he just wanted to see if there were any clues about their past on it… Or if he was lucky, the Phoenix who left the relic might be related to him?

However, with the whereabouts of the Phoenix relic unknown, he only knew it had once been with the Bird Clan, and the only link he had to the Bird Clan was Lin Chengcheng.

“The Bird Clan is divided into two factions: one led by the Elder and the other by the former clan leader Feng Hen,” Su Muluo said. “The faction pursuing Lin Chengcheng is likely the Elder’s faction, but there is also a faction led by the clan leader who wants to protect him. If we can get him back to the Bird Clan and contact the clan leader’s faction, we might be able to find clues about the Phoenix relic.”

With him and Long Ling around, the Elder’s faction wouldn’t be able to touch Lin Chengcheng. Moreover, once in contact with the clan leader’s faction, Lin Chengcheng would be fully protected by people related to his father.

Of course, he would first consult Lin Chengcheng’s opinion. If the other party disagreed, it would be a no-go… But before that, he had to appease his dragon.

Long Ling remained silent after hearing this.

Su Muluo grabbed the corner of Long Ling’s clothes and shook it.

“Come with me,” he said, “After all, it’s a relic of my clan. If there are any clues about dragon relics, I’ll accompany you as well.”

Long Ling still remained silent.

Su Muluo shook him again, looking at him with his beautiful dark eyes, full of anticipation.

Long Ling met his gaze and, after a while, said, “Alright, but the Phoenix has to agree to one condition.”

Su Muluo said, “What condition?”

Long Ling looked at him, his lips curling into a slight smile. “I want seven kisses.”

Su Muluo: “?”

“One kiss each day,” Long Ling said. “If you can’t return within seven days, then kiss me more.”

Su Muluo: “??”

“If it’s more than ten days, then double the kisses every day!”

Su Muluo: “????”

He realized that the dragon had been reluctant from the start and had deliberately tried to take advantage of him!

Long Ling had clearly planned to exploit the situation!

Su Muluo immediately scowled and turned to leave.

Long Ling immediately grabbed his hand and said, “How about five? Even though the phoenix hasn’t been close to me before, I want a phoenix’s favor.”

Su Muluo originally wanted to say none, but seeing Long Ling’s pitiful expression, he hesitated for a few seconds and said, “Only one.”

Long Ling’s eyes lit up, and he quickly said, “No, at least three!”

Su Muluo replied, “Just one. No more.”

Long Ling was adamant, saying, “I want three!” Then he declared confidently, “The road to the Bird Tribe is so far, I’ll definitely need to help the phoenix with the luggage. The phoenix will be tired and need to sleep on me, and I’ll have to hold and comfort him—so three favors are already a good deal.”

Su Muluo said, “Forget it. I’m not going to sleep on you or let you comfort me.”

Long Ling retorted, “The phoenix was still in my arms last night!”

Su Muluo replied, “That was you taking advantage of me, taking me to your bed while I was drunk. I haven’t even settled the score with you.” He narrowed his eyes and asked, “So, did you really touch my feathers yesterday?”

Long Ling was silent.

He locked eyes with Su Muluo for a few seconds, clicked his tongue, and then his gaze became filled with grievance.

Su Muluo was at a loss.

Long Ling said, “The phoenix always needs me to stay with him to fall asleep at night, but he won’t admit it.” He looked at Su Muluo with a look of deep resentment, like he was looking at a scumbag who started something and then abandoned him. “Yesterday, you clung to me, asking for favors and hugs. Today, you’re turning your back on me.”

Su Muluo asked, “When did I ask for favors or hugs?”

Long Ling ignored him and continued, “You take advantage of me every day. When I was still a little dragon, you would touch me all over, pinch my horns, and rub my belly. It was so unfair.”

Su Muluo said, “Before you say that, take a look at your own hands! You’re still holding me tight!”

Long Ling said, “I don’t care, I’m upset! If the phoenix doesn’t favor me, I won’t let go!”

Then he hugged Su Muluo tightly.

In the next moment, he thought for a while, transformed back into his black dragon form, and wrapped himself around the phoenix without letting go.

Su Muluo thought, “How shameless!”

Chapter 30 – Touching Feathers

Chapter 30: Touching Feathers

It was impossible for Su Muluo to ignore Long Ling, so he turned his head away, refusing to acknowledge him.

Long Ling looked at Su Muluo’s attractive profile and thought to himself, his phoenix was both cute and shy. He wondered when he would be able to touch its feathers.

However, before that, he needed to think about how to build his own network. It was better not to tell the phoenix until his influence and connections were truly established. This way, it would be a pleasant surprise for the phoenix.

Half an hour later, Qiansui and the black cat returned to the café and brought Su Muluo some good news: “We found the person.”

—The young man they were looking for was in an alley in the old town.

This area was a filthy and impoverished part of the city, far from the young man’s home. Su Muluo and Long Ling navigated the narrow, winding alley and finally reached the end, where there was a secluded corner.

The young man was curled up in the deep corner, hugging his head and trembling. As soon as Su Muluo approached, the young man cried out, “Don’t come closer!”

He hid his hands in his sleeves, looking panicked. When he saw Su Muluo, he was stunned and said, “Boss? What are you doing here?!”

Su Muluo replied, “I came to find you.”

A faint demonic aura pervaded the air, emanating from the young man. Su Muluo’s previous guess was confirmed—this person was indeed a half-demon, and specifically a bird demon.

“Come to find me?” the young man muttered, “Why would you come to find me… How did you even find me?”

Before he could finish, a look of pain crossed his face, and he hugged his arms tightly.

“Leave quickly! I can’t control my power anymore!!”

Su Muluo responded by knocking the young man out.

The young man collapsed to the ground, revealing his hands covered in small feathers.

Long Ling asked, “Where does the phoenix want to take him?”

“First, let’s take him to the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings,” Su Muluo said, “After all, he is a half-demon and might be someone the bird clan is searching for.”

Long Ling fell silent, clearly displeased.

Su Muluo looked at him and said with a smile, “Or we could take him back with us?”

“Forget it,” Long Ling said with a click of his tongue, “The Bureau of Extraordinary Beings it is.”

Reluctantly, Long Ling transformed back into a small black dragon and crawled into Su Muluo’s pocket.

However, a moment later, it popped its head out of the pocket and let out a yelp.

The phoenix doesn’t allow anyone to touch him!

“Alright, alright, I understand.”

Su Muluo laughed, patted its head, and sent a message to Liu He.

Soon, several members of the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings arrived quickly. They first respectfully greeted Su Muluo with “Mr. Su” and then carried the unconscious young man away to the bureau.

At the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings, two employees were conducting a demon power test on the young man. Liu He stood nearby and said, “No wonder we received a report about unusual demon energy in Lin City recently. It turns out a half-demon has awakened—thank you so much, Mr. Su.”

“It was just a small effort,” Su Muluo said, “Did you find out his identity?”

Liu He nodded and said, “His ID name is Lin Chengcheng. He has no parents, and his house is rented. According to his landlord, he has only been in Lin City for a year and a half. He usually just does odd jobs at convenience stores and rarely interacts with others—there’s no more information for now.”

Su Muluo remained silent. Although the young man’s rented place wasn’t large, the location and environment were decent. He had also ordered special coffee several times before. If he was really just doing odd jobs, he probably wouldn’t have such a comfortable living situation.

This meant the young man was hiding other secrets and was not as simple as he seemed.

Liu He observed Su Muluo’s expression and asked, “Is this your friend?”

“Not exactly,” Su Muluo replied, “But he could be the illegitimate child the bird clan is looking for.”

Liu He was surprised, glanced at the unconscious young man, and stroked her chin, “Indeed… He is a half-demon with a demon power of just over twenty years and has bird clan blood… I should contact the bird clan people immediately.”

She quickly made a phone call, and soon after, the young man on the bed opened his eyes—

And found himself surrounded by people.

The young man was immediately shocked and nearly jumped out of bed, exclaiming, “Who are you?!”

The next second, he realized he wasn’t at home but in a completely unfamiliar place, and he panicked, “Where am I?!”

“You’re awake. You’re at the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings,” Liu He said kindly, “The procedure was successful. You are now a half-demon.”

The young man: “……”

He had a look of disbelief, glancing around. Seeing Su Muluo not far away, he finally spotted a familiar face among the strangers and exclaimed with joy, “Boss! You’re here too!!”

However, upon seeing Su Muluo, Lin Chengcheng’s memories came rushing back all at once. His expression changed abruptly as he immediately looked at his hands.

At that moment, his demonic power had stabilized, and there were no more feathers on the back of his hands. He let out a sigh of relief and muttered, “It really was a dream. I should just go back to sleep; everything will be fine when I wake up.”

He then pulled the covers back over himself and lay down again.

The people by the bedside were silent for a few seconds. Liu He reached out and nudged the young man.

Lin Chengcheng poked his head out from under the covers, looking extremely terrified.

“This isn’t a dream. You’re Lin Chengcheng, a half-demon. Your demonic power awakened earlier, which is why you had those unusual symptoms,” Liu He said. “You’re currently at the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings, an organization that handles demon affairs. All demons coming to human cities must register here. You must have heard of us before.”

“What name??” Lin Chengcheng asked, “What Bureau of Extraordinary Beings? I’ve never heard of it!”

He looked genuinely surprised. Liu He was about to respond when a dark voice interrupted from the side, “Miss Liu, that’s enough for now.”

It was Mu Ge, who had come with several members of the bird clan after receiving Liu He’s message.

“The young master has just awakened. We will explain everything to him later. For now, let him rest,” Mu Ge said, then turned to Lin Chengcheng, “Young master, the bird clan has been waiting for you for many years. Please come back with us.”

Lin Chengcheng was confused and tried to refuse, but meeting Mu Ge’s gaze, his mind went blank, and his thoughts seemed to be drained away.

“… Well, alright,” he said dully, “But I have a cat I need to pick up…”

Mu Ge replied, “Don’t worry about that. We will handle everything for you.”

He then turned to Liu He and said, “Thank you to the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings. The bird clan will remember your kindness and will prepare a generous gift in return.”

Liu He said, “To be honest, your young master wasn’t found by the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings but by Mr. Su. If you want to thank someone, it should be him.”

Mu Ge paused for a moment, glanced at Su Muluo, and said, “Thank you. I apologize for my previous rudeness. It seems you are not the one who killed my master after all.”

Su Muluo responded calmly, “So, are you leaving now, or will you stay here to continue investigating your master’s death?”

Mu Ge replied, “That’s a matter for the bird clan.”

He signaled his two subordinates to help Lin Chengcheng up and then left.

After the bird clan members departed, Su Muluo also left the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings. The small black dragon lay in his palm, raising its little head and asking, “Aw?”

The phoenix hadn’t asked about the relic.

“From Lin Chengcheng’s reaction, he probably doesn’t know much himself,” Su Muluo said. “And it’s not the right time to ask… We’ll meet again soon enough.”

He had left a mark on Lin Chengcheng, so he would be able to sense if something happened to him immediately. Judging by his intuition, the mark would likely come into play in a few days.

The small black dragon tilted its head and rested its chin on Su Muluo’s fingertip, lazily rubbing against it.

It was already evening, and there wasn’t enough time to cook. Su Muluo pinched the little dragon’s soft horn and asked, “Do you want to eat out?”

The small black dragon happily let out a “woof,” transforming into a human and wrapping his arms around Su Muluo’s waist.

Su Muluo tapped his hand and said, “No hugging in public.”

This dragon always liked to hug him suddenly, but thankfully, he reacted quickly and used illusions each time—otherwise, passersby would have been startled.

Long Ling’s mouth curved into a smile as he released his embrace and instead held Su Muluo’s fingers in his hand.

The two walked slowly along the street and soon passed by a Sichuan restaurant.

The restaurant had a pleasant environment, good business, and an enticing aroma of food. Su Muluo decided this was the place.

When ordering, Long Ling asked, “Does the phoenix want any drinks?”

Su Muluo leaned over to look at the menu. Although he had been to hotpot restaurants before, this was his first time at this kind of place. After some thought, he decided to try something different.

“I’ll have a beer,” he said.

Long Ling paused slightly while holding the menu and said, “How about juice instead? I remember the phoenix… hasn’t had beer before, right?”

Su Muluo replied, “No, I want beer.”

He was very insistent and repeated his choice. Long Ling had no choice but to order a can of beer for him.

After a while, several dishes were served—spicy, aromatic, and brightly colored. Su Muluo picked up his chopsticks and took a bite, his eyes lighting up, “Delicious.”

But also very spicy!

Long Ling opened the can of beer, pouring the golden liquid into a glass. Su Muluo eagerly took a sip.

Long Ling asked, “So? Is it good?”

Su Muluo was silent for a few seconds before taking another sip.

“…It tastes quite strange,” he said, “but it doesn’t seem too hard to drink.”

He then set the beer aside and turned to drink the soup instead.

By the end of the meal, he had only consumed a small portion of the beer. After leaving the restaurant, Su Muluo rubbed his eyes and said, “I feel a bit sleepy.”

Long Ling laughed and said, “I’ll carry you back like a phoenix.”

Su Muluo replied, “I don’t want you to carry me.”

But right after saying that, he opened his arms to Long Ling.

Long Ling: “?”

This action was unexpected. He looked at his phoenix for a second and then picked him up.

Su Muluo buried his face in Long Ling’s shoulder and gently nuzzled.

Long Ling: “…”

The phoenix was light and soft, and holding him was effortless. But as he looked at the obedient phoenix in his arms… he felt a bit stunned.

What’s happening?

“Why aren’t we leaving yet?” Su Muluo’s soft face was pressed against Long Ling’s shoulder, his voice lazy as if he were whining, “I want to go back to sleep.”

Long Ling: “…”

So cute!

I want to pinch him!

But pinching him isn’t possible since they’re still on the street. So Long Ling carried his phoenix back to the rental apartment, gently placed him on the sofa, and then squatted down to observe him.

His complexion and expression were normal… he didn’t seem uncomfortable?

Could he be drunk?

Long Ling remembered that Su Muluo hadn’t finished the rest of the beer and thought it unlikely—his phoenix had only had a few sips, so how could he be drunk?

While Long Ling was pondering, Su Muluo seemed a bit unhappy and said, “I don’t want to be here; I want to go to the room.”

Then he opened his arms again towards Long Ling.

Although the living room was only a few steps from the bedroom, he was unwilling to walk there himself and insisted that Long Ling carry him. Long Ling felt his heart melting and chuckled as he picked up his phoenix, saying, “Alright, let’s go to the room.”

But once they were back in the room, there was another problem.

How to change into pajamas?

Long Ling looked at the pajamas on the bed and then at the phoenix clinging to him. He asked, “Does the phoenix want to change into pajamas by himself?”

Su Muluo snuggled lazily in Long Ling’s arms, unwilling to move, “No, I don’t want to change… I want to sleep.”

Long Ling responded, “Oh, then the phoenix can sleep here. I’ll go sleep on the sofa.”

Su Muluo: “?”

He immediately lifted his head and stared at Long Ling.

Long Ling looked innocent and said, “The phoenix said so. If you don’t want me to sleep in the room, I can only sleep on the sofa.”

Su Muluo grabbed the edge of his shirt and said, “You’re not allowed to leave.”

“No way, the phoenix told me to leave a few days ago,” Long Ling said. “If the phoenix wakes up tomorrow and finds me in the bed, he might still hit me.”

Su Muluo: “I won’t hit you. You’re not allowed to leave.”

Long Ling said, “But the phoenix will still hit me. Last time, the phoenix said he’d turn me into a twisted doughnut.”

Su Muluo: “…”

Su Muluo buried his face in Long Ling’s shoulder and muttered, “That was just to trick you.”

Long Ling gently stroked his soft hair and, with a hint of laughter, said, “But I was tricked and scared. How will the phoenix make it up to me?”

At this point, his confusion grew even more. His phoenix had only had a few sips of beer… Could it really be because of those few sips that he was drunk?

Long Ling looked at Su Muluo, who also looked back at him. After a few seconds, Su Muluo tilted his head.

A pure white bird with a beautiful sheen landed on Long Ling’s palm, “cheeped,” and spread its soft wings.

Here, feel my feathers.

Long Ling: “…”

Chapter 29 – Disappearance

Chapter 29: Disappearance

Steam rose from the pot as Su Muluo opened a package of frozen dumplings and began boiling them.

He had returned from the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings early in the morning and had not eaten anything since. Fortunately, there was a small pot in the staff lounge, and he had bought a bag of frozen dumplings from the shop across the street, making it his breakfast.

While the dumplings were cooking, the little black dragon lay languidly nearby. After a while, it caught the aroma of the dumplings and immediately perked up its head.

Su Muluo ignored it, and the dragon slowly inched closer to the edge of the pot, staring longingly.

“Yip.”

It wanted to eat.

“I’m not giving you any,” Su Muluo said, “You bit me just now.”

The little black dragon replied with a plaintive “Yip!”

That was because you called me a little dog first!

Su Muluo said, “I apologized afterward. Why did you still bite me!”

The little black dragon fell silent.

It certainly wouldn’t admit that it found the phoenix’s aroma irresistible and didn’t want to let go.

Su Muluo noticed its silence and poked it, feeling that the dragon had a mischievous mind.

However, after the dumplings were done, he took a small bowl and ladled a few into it for the dragon.

As Su Muluo and the dragon enjoyed their dumplings in the café, Qian Sui slowly came out of the staff lounge. It first sniffed the air and then looked at Su Muluo, saying, “It seems like someone is outside.”

Su Muluo replied, “Don’t worry about them. Do you want some dumplings?”

The illusion spells were as sophisticated as high-level illusions. The bird people who were watching could only see what he wanted them to see. However, his patience was limited. If they didn’t leave after a while… he would have to “invite” them to leave.

Qian Sui wasn’t interested in dumplings and turned away. The little black dragon, however, raised its head warily at Su Muluo’s words and clung protectively to its bowl, looking as though it was guarding its food.

Su Muluo chuckled, saying, “You little glutton, you can’t finish all these dumplings by yourself.”

The little black dragon responded, “Yip!”

That doesn’t mean I’ll give any to others!

These are dumplings the phoenix made for me!

Su Muluo said, “They weren’t made for you. You just snatched them from me.”

Saying this, he added a few more dumplings to the dragon’s bowl.

After breakfast, Su Muluo noticed that the bird people were still nearby and had not left as expected. He put the little black dragon into his pocket and left the café.

A short while later, he returned as if nothing had happened, holding a feather from a bird and playfully teasing the little black dragon, which was poking its head out of his pocket.

The little black dragon looked at the black feather with some disdain, thinking it was neither beautiful nor soft, nowhere near as good as its own phoenix.

Then, it climbed out of the pocket and transformed back into its human form.

“I have a phoenix feather now,” Long Ling said, lifting his hand and showing off the feather pendant. He then wrapped his arms around Su Muluo’s waist, “The phoenix’s is still the best, soft and fragrant. No other bird compares.”

Su Muluo pushed him away, saying, “That doesn’t mean you get to hold me.”

Long Ling refused to let go, snuggling closer to Su Muluo’s shoulder with a clingy gesture.

Having only been human for a few days, his true nature had already been fully revealed. Every day, he clung to his phoenix and wouldn’t let go when he hugged.

Su Muluo looked at the dragon and really wanted to stuff him back into his egg, but since that was impossible, he rubbed the dragon’s head messily.

The bird people who had been spying had been driven away. Throughout the day, many customers came into the café, but the young man with the earring did not appear.

Previously, the young man would always come when the café opened, but today he did not—under normal circumstances, Su Muluo might not have cared, but now he suspected the young man might be Feng Hen’s illegitimate child and felt it necessary to pay more attention.

Feng Xuan came to find the former clan leader’s illegitimate child but unexpectedly died in the hotel. Before he died, he said there were two factions among the bird people—one loyal to the former clan leader Feng Hen and the other to the Grand Elder.

If the Grand Elder’s faction killed Feng Xuan and the young man was indeed Feng Hen’s illegitimate child, then his situation would undoubtedly be very dangerous.

Su Muluo wondered whether the bird people knew about the young man’s existence now… or whether his absence from the café today was related to the bird people.

With this thought, Su Muluo turned his attention to Qian Sui, who had just returned from outside.

Qian Sui looked at Su Muluo with vigilance, clearly on guard.

Su Muluo spoke gently, “Did you mark every person who took a cat from the shop before?”

Qian Sui nodded and asked, “Why?”

Su Muluo said, “Please take me to the home of the person who took the black cat.”

The young man who had taken a cat from his shop was the only black cat among the group of cats.

Qian Sui thought for a moment and said, “The marks from several days ago have already faded.” It paused and then added, “But I went to his house the day before yesterday and know the location.”

Without delay, Su Muluo and Long Ling followed Qian Sui to the young man’s home.

When Su Muluo first met the young man, he felt a strange aura around him, but it didn’t seem like demonic energy—now he realized the young man was probably a half-demon whose powers hadn’t fully awakened yet, so there was no demonic energy.

Before awakening, a half-demon, despite having demonic blood, is no different from an ordinary human and would not be detected.

Half an hour later, Su Muluo and Long Ling, guided by Qian Sui, arrived at an ordinary apartment, went up to the fifth floor, and stopped in front of a door.

Qian Sui circled the door and said, “This is the place.”

Su Muluo moved forward to knock, but Long Ling said, “No need to knock. There’s no one inside.”

Then, he simply kicked open the door.

Qian Sui looked on in surprise.

It glanced at Su Muluo, as if questioning why he wasn’t doing anything.

Su Muluo looked at Long Ling, finding that the dragon’s senses seemed far more acute than the phoenix’s… feeling a bit envious.

The door opened, and a black cat, startled, immediately jumped onto the sofa.

Long Ling entered before his phoenix, surveying the room and saying, “There’s no sign of bird people here.”

Su Muluo was surprised, “You can even detect that?” It seemed the dragon’s senses were indeed very sharp, making him even more envious.

Long Ling’s lips curved slightly, “Yes, I can sense many auras, but the one I remember the most is the phoenix’s.” He added proudly, “Even if one day the phoenix runs away, I could track you down by the scent of the phoenix.”

Su Muluo ignored the latter part and walked into the room.

The room was not large and was likely lived in by a single person. However, it was filled with cat beds and climbing structures, and there were several dishes of cat food and fresh water on the floor, enough to feed a cat for several days.

The black cat, scared by the intruders, huddled on a climbing structure and refused to come down. Qian Sui walked to the base and meowed up at it.

The two cats meowed back and forth, and Qian Sui turned to Su Muluo, saying, “He left by himself. He didn’t seem well before he left, like he was sick… but no one threatened him.”

This was quite consistent with Su Muluo’s guess. The lack of bird people’s aura indicated they hadn’t discovered the young man. The food and water for the cat suggested the young man was clear-headed before leaving and had ample time.

But why did he leave in the first place?

Was something wrong?

Su Muluo fell silent. The immediate priority was to find the young man. However, Lin City was so large that finding him might be quite challenging.

At this moment, Qian Sui said, “I have many friends scattered throughout the city. They might help find that person.”

Without waiting for Su Muluo’s response, it quickly added, “I’m not helping you. I just want to help Doushi find its owner.”

Doushi was the black cat in the room. Su Muluo looked at the black cat and then at Qian Sui, smiling slightly, “Thank you. I’ll give you a couple more cans of cat food when we return.”

Qian Sui said, “Three cans.”

Then it ran out with the black cat.

After they left, Su Muluo closed the door.

Su Muluo turned to Long Ling and said, “Let’s head back and wait for news.”

Long Ling nodded, gazing at the phoenix without saying a word.

Perhaps he needed to have his own connections, his own influence, he thought. This way, he could better help his phoenix, provide everything the phoenix wanted… and prevent anyone from taking the phoenix away.

Su Muluo didn’t know what Long Ling was thinking. He patted Long Ling’s head, who then took his hand.

On the way back, Su Muluo felt that Long Ling seemed preoccupied and was unusually tight-lipped, which was very strange.

“What’s wrong?” Su Muluo asked, staring at Long Ling. “If you don’t tell me soon, I’ll ignore you.”

Long Ling looked at him, wrapped his arms around Su Muluo’s waist, and said, “I want to keep a phoenix.”

Su Muluo laughed upon hearing this, “And how do you plan to do that? I don’t have any salary to give you.”

Long Ling said, “I can earn it myself.”

He looked very determined, which only made Su Muluo more curious. “How will you earn it? Are you going to get a job?”

Long Ling thought for a moment and said, “I’ll see if there are any ways to make money.”

Su Muluo handed him his phone, “Here, look for yourself.”

By the time they returned to the café, Long Ling had already been looking at his phone for a while. Su Muluo intended to make a cup of coffee for him and the dragon, but suddenly Long Ling exclaimed, “This one can earn three thousand a month!”

“That’s a lot!” Su Muluo thought, wondering what job could earn so little. He leaned over to see—

Brick moving.

“……” He said, “Try another one.”

Long Ling said, “Oh,” and after a while, handed Su Muluo the phone again. “How about this one? This one can earn ten thousand!”

Su Muluo glanced again—food delivery.

“……”

Su Muluo took the phone away.

Long Ling asked, “?”

“Can’t you find a more decent job?” Su Muluo tapped him on the head. “You’re a dragon!”

It was rather pitiful to think that the world’s only true dragon could only do brick moving or food delivery.

Long Ling held his hand and said, “But it says here that food delivery can earn ten thousand a month—can the phoenix’s shop earn that much?”

If he worked for fifty months, that would be fifty thousand, enough to buy a diamond ring!

Su Muluo said, “Of course, it can earn much more than that.”

With his shop, Su Muluo could sell several cups of special coffee every day, and just from the special coffee, he could earn over ten thousand a month, which was definitely better than food delivery.

Long Ling thought for a moment and said, “But that’s not money I’ve earned. I’ve never earned money before.”

His tone was a bit dejected.

Seeing that his dragon was getting unhappy, Su Muluo patted his head and smiled, “It doesn’t matter. We don’t need to worry about money. We came here for fun, not to make money.”

His tone was gentle, but Long Ling didn’t seem comforted. “No, if we don’t make money now, how will we buy a diamond ring for the phoenix?”

Su Muluo was about to say that he wasn’t really interested in a diamond ring when Long Ling added, “Then I can marry the phoenix and make her my wife.”

Su Muluo: “?”

Marry what?

Do what?

“We also need to buy a big house so the phoenix can lay eggs for me,” Long Ling continued seriously, then said, “No, don’t buy eggs. Just get a big house to keep the phoenix.”

He seemed a bit happy talking about this, “Then I can keep the phoenix in the big house and touch her feathers every day.”

Su Muluo: “??? ”

He was about to angrily say, “You can touch yourself,” but heard Long Ling sigh, as if suddenly coming back to reality, and said gloomily, “So we need to save money quickly. Otherwise, what if the phoenix thinks I’m poor and runs off with another wild man?”

Su Muluo: “……”

Long Ling looked at him with a bit of grievance, “The phoenix doesn’t comfort me. I feel like the phoenix doesn’t like me.”

Then he grabbed Su Muluo’s hand and loudly complained, “I’m unhappy! I want the phoenix to be affectionate! A hundred times of affection!”

Su Muluo: “…………”

Su Muluo expressionlessly shook off Long Ling’s hand.

“Go move bricks then!”

Chapter 28 – The Phoenix Relics

Chapter 28: The Phoenix Relics

Although extremely unwilling, Long Ling was still dragged out by his phoenix.

As soon as they stepped outside, he transformed back into a small black dragon and burrowed into Su Muluo’s pocket.

“Roar.”

He didn’t want the people from the Extraordinary Bureau to see him in his human form.

He disliked them.

Su Muluo didn’t stop him; since this little dragon didn’t like the Extraordinary Bureau, staying in his pocket was fine.

But every time they went there, it seemed like nothing good ever came of it.

So, he comforted the little dragon by patting its small head and led it away.

At the Extraordinary Bureau, Liu He, as usual, waited for Su Muluo at the entrance. Upon seeing him, he quickly walked over and said, “Mr. Su, the people from the bird clan are currently in the director’s office. Please come with me.”

Su Muluo had no objections and said, “Thank you for your trouble.”

Liu He smiled awkwardly and said, “It’s no trouble at all, Mr. Su. Rest assured, we believe you were dragged into this. However, the people from the bird clan are quite agitated and might ask you a few questions.”

Only the high-level members of the Lin City Extraordinary Bureau and a few people at headquarters knew Su Muluo’s identity. Because of this, they believed Su Muluo would have no reason to target a bird clan elder. However, the bird clan was unaware of this. Given the involvement of the True Dragon, the Extraordinary Bureau could not reveal Su Muluo’s identity to them.

So after the bird clan elder’s incident, the Extraordinary Bureau’s role was to have Su Muluo come over, mediate, and find a solution to the matter.

On the way to the office, Su Muluo asked, “How did Feng Xuan die?”

Liu He’s expression grew serious at the mention, “We are still investigating. So far, we have found that he went to your coffee shop yesterday, then returned and instructed his subordinates to find three people. After that, he stayed in the hotel and didn’t come out—when his subordinates found him again, he was already dead in his room.”

The little black dragon popped its head out from Su Muluo’s pocket and let out a fierce “Roar.”

Liu He was startled and thought the True Dragon might breathe fire at her again, so she stepped back immediately.

Su Muluo calmly pushed the little black dragon back and said, “Don’t come out again later.” Then he said to Liu He, “He just said that no matter how you think about it, Feng Xuan’s subordinates are the most suspicious.”

Liu He thought to herself that Mr. Su was truly impressive, understanding even such trivial talk, but maintained a serious face and said, “We initially thought so too, but after investigation, Feng Xuan’s strongest subordinate had only been around for 250 years, while Feng Xuan himself was a 500-year-old bird demon. They simply couldn’t overpower him.”

She paused slightly and added, “Moreover, those subordinates had been with Feng Xuan for hundreds of years and had always been loyal, maintaining a good relationship with him.”

So, after all the twists and turns, Su Muluo, the last stranger Feng Xuan had interacted with, remained the most suspicious.

Su Muluo fell silent. He hadn’t expected Feng Xuan to die unexpectedly. Moreover, before their separation, Feng Xuan had promised to find out the identities of the bird demons who had attacked him… Could the issue lie here?

During their conversation, the two had already reached the office. Liu He knocked on the door, and after receiving a response from inside, she led Su Muluo in.

The office was spacious. The director of the Extraordinary Bureau, Zheng Hechun, sat in the main seat, with several people on either side, all looking cold and unfriendly.

“Mr. Su,” Zheng Hechun’s attitude was quite gentle, “please have a seat.”

Su Muluo calmly sat on the sofa. Liu He did not return to Zheng Hechun’s side but stood behind him.

This was a signal, indicating the Extraordinary Bureau’s attitude towards Su Muluo. The few bird demons exchanged glances, and their expressions subtly changed.

“Mr. Su,” said a man leading the bird demons, “yesterday my master came to see you, and he ended up dead in the hotel that night. How do you explain this?”

Su Muluo knew he was referring to Feng Xuan’s disciple, Mu Ge, a 250-year-old bird demon, and replied, “There’s nothing to explain. I only spent a short time with him and haven’t been in contact since.”

“However, before my master was killed, he had only seen one unfamiliar person—namely you!” Mu Ge said. “What did he say to you? After returning, he instructed us to investigate if there were any anomalies within our clan?”

His tone was somewhat sharp, but Su Muluo remained calm and replied, “He mistook me for the illegitimate child of the former bird clan leader and asked me to return and inherit the bird clan.”

Zheng Hechun: “…”

Liu He: “…”

“Illegitimate child of the bird clan…” Mu Ge repeated the phrase, and his expression toward Su Muluo changed slightly. “So, after my master left, where did you go?”

Su Muluo: “I went to my shop.”

Mu Ge: “And after closing the shop? Surely you didn’t stay there the whole night!”

Su Muluo calmly said, “Then I went home and spent time with my boyfriend.”

As soon as he finished speaking, the pocket started moving as the little black dragon inside wriggled furiously.

Su Muluo reached into the pocket to hold down the little black dragon, which then clung tightly to his fingers.

And even bit him.

Su Muluo: “…”

Meanwhile, Zheng Hechun and Liu He both looked surprised when they heard “boyfriend,” while the bird clan members remained unmoved and said, “Since you say you were with your boyfriend, where is he? Let him come out and testify!”

Su Muluo: “That’s not possible. He’s still asleep at home.”

Another bird demon sneered immediately and said, “Are you trying to deceive us? Are you planning to go back and find your boyfriend to make a run for it?”

Su Muluo raised an eyebrow slightly. The bird demon continued, “Why aren’t you speaking? Are you feeling guilty?”

“Sorry to interrupt,” Liu He spoke up at this moment, “You have no evidence to prove that Mr. Su is the killer. We only asked him questions—now that the questions are answered, Mr. Su can leave.”

“Impossible!” the bird demon said. “He’s a suspect in the elder’s murder. He cannot be let go!”

Liu He glanced at Zheng Hechun, maintaining her calm demeanor, “As I said, you have no evidence, and Mr. Su has no motive to kill Elder Feng. However, the Extraordinary Bureau will assist the bird clan in investigating until the true culprit is found.”

She then added with a slight smile, “Moreover, if we are talking about suspicion, you were the last to contact Elder Feng, so… your suspicion might be a bit higher than Mr. Su’s?”

The bird demon: “You—”

Just as he was about to get angry, Zheng Hechun roared from behind his desk, “Xiao Liu! What nonsense are you talking? Apologize immediately!”

Liu He quickly bowed her head and obediently said, “I misspoke. I’m sorry!”

With her apology, Zheng Hechun smiled at the bird demon and said, “She’s young and doesn’t know better. I’ll discipline her more in the future. Please forgive us.”

The bird demon: “…”

With the exchange of words, the bird demon couldn’t say much more. Mu Ge glanced at them faintly and said, “In that case, we’ll trouble the Extraordinary Bureau.”

After their brief stay, they left. Subsequently, Su Muluo also departed.

“Mr. Su,” outside the office, Liu He said, “You might need to be more cautious these days. The bird clan hasn’t lifted their suspicion of you and might send people to keep an eye on you.”

Su Muluo nodded, “Thank you for the reminder. I’ll be careful.” He understood Liu He was kindly warning him not to let the bird clan know he had a True Dragon, as the existence of a True Dragon should be kept as hidden as possible.

The two walked out of the Extraordinary Bureau. On the way, Liu He mentioned Feng Xuan again.

“Elder Feng had extremely keen senses and could detect the presence of familiar people. If a familiar person had contact with a stranger, he could even sense that familiarity on the stranger.” Because of Feng Xuan’s incident, Liu He also learned the bird clan’s purpose in Lin City. “He might have sought you out because you had contact with the bird clan’s illegitimate child. If you encounter someone like that, please inform the Extraordinary Bureau immediately.”

Su Muluo fell silent upon hearing her words.

Perhaps being an outsider gave Liu He a different perspective… a perspective completely different from before.

He had always thought that Feng Han had the bloodline of the Phoenix clan, which made Feng Xuan sense a similarity in their auras. But the truth might be that Feng Han didn’t have Phoenix blood at all. Instead, he had unknowingly come into contact with Feng Han’s illegitimate child, and thus had a trace of that aura, which Feng Xuan, with his acute senses, detected.

If that was the case, he must have indeed met that illegitimate child and seen him many times. Many people could meet this condition… such as the frequent customer who regularly paid in cash and had a peculiar aura.

Suddenly, many faces flashed through Su Muluo’s mind, finally settling on one.

The young man who often paid in cash, wore an ear stud, and always had an odd aura about him.

Could it be him?

While Su Muluo was deep in thought, Liu He continued, “And there’s one more thing you shouldn’t tell others. I just heard it from the director.”

She looked around to ensure no one was nearby and whispered, “The reason the bird clan came to Lin City to look for the former clan leader’s illegitimate child is not only because they need a new clan leader but also because they suspect that the lost treasure of the bird clan might be with that illegitimate child.”

Su Muluo asked, “Bird clan’s treasure?”

Liu He nodded, “That treasure has been missing since Feng Han disappeared. It might have been taken by him or could still be with the bird clan… I’ve heard it’s a relic left by the Phoenix clan and has been part of the bird clan’s heritage for a thousand years.”

Su Muluo: “…”

What?

A relic of the Phoenix clan?

Had he been too reclusive? It seemed… he had never heard of such a thing.

Liu He added, “However, the existence of this treasure has always been kept secret by the bird clan and never disclosed to outsiders. Only because they need to cooperate with the Extraordinary Bureau this time did they reluctantly inform the director—who told me, and I’m telling you. Please don’t tell a third person.”

This explained why the outside world knew nothing about this treasure. Su Muluo felt reassured and didn’t think he was overly reclusive. He said, “Okay, I won’t say anything.” He might just mention it to a dragon later.

After that, the two parted ways at the Extraordinary Bureau. Su Muluo didn’t return to his rented apartment but went to his coffee shop.

Liu He’s reminder was correct. As soon as he arrived at the shop, he noticed many more eyes on him. So he used a concealment spell and took the little black dragon out of his pocket.

The little black dragon nestled in Su Muluo’s palm, clinging to his hand like a phoenix, twisting and turning with delight.

It’s calling me its boyfriend!

Boyfriend!

The little black dragon was so thrilled it almost tangled itself up again, but it reacted quickly, untangling itself and wrapping its tail around Su Muluo’s wrist, happily giving his fingertip a little peck.

Su Muluo was amused by its small gesture and soon fell into deep thought.

He had thought that if Feng Hen didn’t have phoenix blood, it wouldn’t concern him. But he didn’t expect that the bird clan would have a phoenix relic, and it might even be in the hands of Feng Hen’s illegitimate child.

And that illegitimate child is currently in Lin City.

Su Muluo patted the little black dragon’s head and said, “What do you think this phoenix relic is, and how did the bird clan obtain it?”

The little black dragon, happily rubbing against the phoenix’s finger, nudged it for a few seconds before shaking its head to indicate it didn’t know.

Su Muluo scratched its chin, pondering, “They have a phoenix relic but never tell anyone about it. They keep it so secretive—are they afraid of attracting envy?”

Or is there something else going on?

The little black dragon looked at its phoenix and gave a small “aow” in response.

If the phoenix wants it, it will help the phoenix get it.

Su Muluo said, “There’s no need. Even if it’s a phoenix relic, it might be something left to them by other phoenixes, not mine… I just want to take a look.”

According to Liu He, the phoenix relic might be with the bird clan or with that illegitimate child. Either way, he needed to meet this illegitimate child and see what the legendary phoenix relic really was.

With some luck, he might even catch a glimpse of some hidden truths from the past.

Thinking of this, Su Muluo said to the little black dragon, “Do you want to go to the Abnormality Bureau again and use the Trace Mirror?” He hadn’t had the little black dragon use the Trace Mirror before because it wouldn’t transform into its human form then. Now that it had, it was time to give it a try.

The little black dragon: “……”

Aow!

It didn’t want to go to the Abnormality Bureau again!!!

Su Muluo said, “Alright, alright, I understand.”

Although he said this, he was still thinking about finding a day when the little dragon wasn’t paying attention and taking it to the Abnormality Bureau.

Today, the café opened earlier than usual, with no customers at first. Su Muluo wasn’t in a hurry. He wasn’t aiming to make money by opening early; he was waiting for the young man with the ear stud.

While waiting, the little black dragon clung to Su Muluo’s fingers, spinning around in his hand, chasing its own tail.

Su Muluo watched it play with itself for a while and couldn’t help but laugh, “You look like a little puppy.”

The little black dragon: “?”

Su Muluo added, “Little puppies also chase their tails and spin around.”

The little black dragon: “???“

The little black dragon never expected that, after the mud eel spirit and the little mouse, its phoenix would now label it a “puppy.” It immediately lifted its head and let out a loud “aow.”

It was not a puppy!

It wanted an apology!

“Not at all,” Su Muluo said, “I didn’t say you are a puppy, I said you look like one.” He then added with a grin, “Given how black you are, a little white dog might be cuter than you.”

The little black dragon: “……”

The little black dragon suddenly bit Su Muluo’s finger.

Su Muluo: “?”

He shook his finger and said, “Let go.”

The little black dragon didn’t let go.

Su Muluo shook his finger again and said, “Alright, you’re not a puppy. Can you let go now?”

The little black dragon still wouldn’t let go.

Su Muluo pleaded, “I’m sorry, I was wrong. Please let go!”

The little black dragon just wouldn’t let go.

Su Muluo: “……”

The little black dragon didn’t bite hard or hurt its phoenix, but it just wouldn’t release its grip.

It even looked at him with a triumphant expression.

Su Muluo: “…………”

Moments later, a small pot of hot water was boiling, with the little black dragon suspended above it, tightly holding onto Su Muluo’s finger and making a commotion.

“Aow!!”

Chapter 27 – Did You Kill Feng Xuan?

Chapter 27: Did You Kill Feng Xuan?

Under Long Ling’s melancholic and resentful gaze, Su Muluo comfortingly patted his head.

Long Ling, looking very unhappy, grabbed Su Muluo’s hand, leaned in, and hugged his phoenix’s waist.

Su Muluo pushed him away: “Go away, I’m not letting you hug me.”

Long Ling wouldn’t let go.

Su Muluo: “I’m going to take a bath!”

Long Ling pretended not to hear.

Su Muluo: “If you don’t let go, I’ll hit you!”

Long Ling buried his face in Su Muluo’s shoulder, snuggling and rubbing against him.

Su Muluo: “……”

Su Muluo quickly tugged at the feather bracelet on Long Ling’s wrist.

Long Ling: “!”

He immediately let go, protecting his bracelet.

“This is something the phoenix said was for me!”

“Then what about what I just said?” Su Muluo said expressionlessly, “Still taking advantage of me.”

Long Ling huffed, “It’s because the phoenix doesn’t comfort me.”

Su Muluo asked, “Comfort you about what? Comfort you about being poor?”

Long Ling was even more displeased, grabbing Su Muluo’s hand again and refusing to let him go. “I don’t care; I want the phoenix to comfort me.”

Su Muluo tried to pull his hand free but couldn’t. He looked at Long Ling for a few seconds, then smiled and said, “Alright, alright, I’ll comfort you. It’s okay to be a little poor; as long as you’re good-looking, that’s fine.”

Long Ling found this a bit odd and not very comforting. However, he still enjoyed being praised by the phoenix, so he let go of Su Muluo’s hand.

He then eagerly asked, “Can I go take a bath with the phoenix?”

Su Muluo patted his head, the corner of his mouth curving up slightly. “Dream on.”

And then he went to take a bath alone.

The sound of water came from the bathroom, and Long Ling, feeling bored, sat on the sofa browsing through Su Muluo’s phone.

There was a lot of content on the phone, but he wasn’t interested in any of it; he preferred being with his phoenix.

When could he bathe with the phoenix?

Black Dragon thought whimsically.

Do phoenixes have mating seasons? If they do, could he cuddle with his phoenix then?

Also, can phoenixes lay eggs? Would they lay a nest of beautiful baby birds for him?

Long Ling recalled the memories left to him by the dragon clan and realized they didn’t mention whether phoenixes could lay eggs for their dragons. He couldn’t help but feel a bit regretful.

When Su Muluo came out of the bathroom, he saw Long Ling sitting on the sofa, intensely focused on his phone.

What could be so interesting?

Curious, Su Muluo walked over and glanced at the screen—right at the top of the search bar was “Bird Reproduction Methods.”

Also “Bird Egg Care.”

Su Muluo: “……”

Su Muluo: “???”

At that moment, the phoenix almost had a fit. He immediately snatched the phone back, shocked and incredulous. “What are you looking at??”

Checking out other pretty birds while he was in the bath??

That’s too much!

Thinking this, he angrily gave Long Ling a tap.

Long Ling looked innocent and said, “I just wanted to check in advance to see how phoenixes lay eggs and what preparations need to be made.”

Su Muluo: “???”

Leaving aside whether he could lay eggs, this dragon wanted to prepare in advance?

Preparing ten thousand years in advance?

So, Su Muluo’s face darkened, and he said coldly, “Then you’ll be disappointed. I can’t lay eggs. If you want eggs, find another bird!”

After saying that, he turned to leave, but Long Ling quickly got up and hugged him.

“I’m sorry, phoenix, don’t be angry.” Long Ling was very quick to apologize, hugging his phoenix tightly, leaning in to whisper affectionately in his ear, “I want the phoenix, not eggs.”

Su Muluo ignored him.

Long Ling buried his face in Su Muluo’s hair, rubbing and snuggling, “I was wrong. Don’t be angry, phoenix. I like you the most, you’re the prettiest—”

With sticky sweet talk and his breath tickling Su Muluo’s ear, Su Muluo felt itchy, pushed him away, and said, “Let go of me.”

“Not letting go,” Long Ling said, “I’ll let go once the phoenix isn’t angry.”

And he continued to snuggle.

Su Muluo felt that what was clinging to him wasn’t a dragon but a clingy big dog. He wasn’t really angry but finally couldn’t stand being snuggled any longer and laughed, “Alright, alright, I’m not angry anymore. Stop snuggling me!”

Long Ling finally relented and happily rested his chin on Su Muluo’s shoulder, no longer snuggling.

“The phoenix is the best,” he said with a smile, “Next time I won’t search for those weird things anymore.”

Su Muluo replied, “I’m not that great. The birds you were looking at earlier were much prettier than me.”

Long Ling saw this as a tricky question and immediately became serious. “No, they’re all bald birds and ugly. They don’t look as good as the phoenix.” He then added, “My phoenix is the prettiest bird. No one can compare.”

Su Muluo fell silent, but judging by his expression, it was clear that he was somewhat pleased by his dragon’s words.

Long Ling tightly hugged his phoenix, thinking that even if the phoenix could lay eggs, after those little birds or dragon hatchlings were born, the phoenix might focus all its attention on them and not look at him much.

So it was better not to lay eggs; he only wanted his phoenix.

After a while, Su Muluo realized that Long Ling was still hugging him and immediately pushed him away, telling him to go take a bath.

At bedtime, Long Ling changed into the pajamas that the phoenix bought for him and tried to enter the room with the phoenix—only to be kicked out again.

“Go away,” Su Muluo said, shoving a quilt into his arms. “Go sleep on the sofa.”

“……”

Long Ling hugged the sofa, silently watching Su Muluo with a forlorn look.

Su Muluo remained unmoved and even tried to close the room door. Long Ling quickly stepped in front of the door and said, “But what if the phoenix acts like last night?”

He remembered how the phoenix was sweating profusely and had a dazed look in its eyes, almost like it was in a mating season… looking very tempting.

“I wouldn’t do that,” Su Muluo said. “I’m not sleepy tonight and only lost one feather.”

Feeling a bit confident, Su Muluo saw Long Ling reluctantly trying to say something and immediately said, “Go to bed quickly, or you’ll go bald!”

And then he closed the door.

—Though Su Muluo was quite forceful when kicking Long Ling out, after the lights were out in the room, he found himself unable to sleep again.

He lay in bed, staring at the ceiling in the dark. After a while, he pulled the quilt over his head.

The first half of the night was still very hard to bear, but in the early hours, a familiar drowsiness came over him. Su Muluo’s heart sank, sensing something was wrong, but he quickly fell into a deep sleep under the drowsiness.

As expected, he was soon awakened by a burning heat.

But this time it wasn’t as uncomfortable as before, at least not with that feeling of weakness and exhaustion. Su Muluo groggily opened his eyes and found himself lying in a man’s embrace.

“Phoenix,” Long Ling’s strong arms were wrapped around his waist, gently patting his back, and he asked softly, “Are you still uncomfortable? Do you want something cold to drink?”

“……” Su Muluo looked at Long Ling in a daze. “When did you come in?”

Long Ling noticed that his phoenix seemed to be feeling better compared to the previous night and honestly said, “An hour ago.”

Su Muluo: “?”

The dizziness vanished in an instant, and he immediately got up to try to push Long Ling out. However, Long Ling was quicker and wrapped his arms around Su Muluo’s waist, pressing him tightly into his embrace, not letting go.

Su Muluo was trapped in Long Ling’s embrace and poked him, saying, “Let go!”

“No, I won’t let go. The phoenix needs me,” Long Ling asserted, “It was after I arrived last night that the phoenix felt much better. This time I came early, so the phoenix isn’t as uncomfortable.”

Su Muluo was shocked and felt that this dragon had become even more shameless. Just as he was about to say something, Long Ling continued, “Since I became human, as long as the phoenix is with me, it has never experienced abnormal drowsiness. The phoenix can think about it; it’s true.”

After hearing this, Su Muluo was silent for a moment and said, “You’ve only been human for two days.”

Long Ling replied, “Two days can already prove a lot! Besides, after I hatched, the phoenix was affected by many anomalies because of me. Now that I’ve stabilized, as long as the phoenix stays by my side, it will stabilize too.”

He spoke with such reason and evidence that it seemed very convincing. For a moment, Su Muluo couldn’t think of a rebuttal.

Since Long Ling appeared in a stable human form beside him, he indeed had not felt drowsy as frequently as before. Moreover, the discomfort in the past two nights was also because his dragon wasn’t by his side… He had never spent a night apart from his dragon in the past eighteen hundred years.

There must indeed be some connection between them, but he didn’t expect it to be so profound that he couldn’t even be apart from his dragon for a while.

What kind of feelings did they have when they forged this connection back then?

Su Muluo fell silent, and Long Ling, keenly sensing something from his silence, lowered his head and gently nuzzled his soft hair, smiling, “So don’t drive me away, okay?”

Su Muluo looked at him for a while and said softly, “Then turn back.”

He still couldn’t quite accept being hugged to sleep by a man, feeling it was too intimate.

He didn’t want to let this dragon take more advantage!

Long Ling was still very pleased with this. He liked sticking close to his phoenix in any form, as it was all the same to him.

So he transformed into a small black dragon.

“Eek.”

The small black dragon wrapped around Su Muluo’s finger, its dark golden dragon eyes fixed on him unblinkingly.

Su Muluo patted its little head and said, “If you turn back while I’m asleep again, I’ll throw away your feather bracelet.”

The small black dragon: “!”

The small black dragon curled up into a little ball in his palm, looking very well-behaved.

Su Muluo’s eyebrows curved slightly as he pulled the blanket over himself and the little dragon, saying, “Let’s sleep.”

With his dragon by his side, he indeed slept very comfortably in the second half of the night. The next morning, Su Muluo was awakened by a clear bird call.

He opened his eyes and saw a paper crane on the bedside while the small black dragon was still curled up in his palm, hugging its tail and sleeping soundly.

To avoid waking his little dragon, Su Muluo did not get up. Instead, he reached out to retrieve the paper crane, unfolded it, and a line of text appeared in mid-air.

It was the biography of the former bird clan leader, Feng Hen. He had asked the old rabbit demon to investigate yesterday, and today he got the results.

However, after reading the investigation results, he frowned slightly.

Feng Hen’s life… could be described as very plain.

His talent was not outstanding, and he continued the leader position only because his father was the former leader of the bird clan. To stabilize his position, he had to marry the eldest elder’s daughter, and then left most clan affairs to the elder, rarely getting involved.

If it weren’t for meeting the human woman he adored, he might have stayed in his leader position and lived a plain life.

The boldest thing he did was to escape the bird clan with that human woman… and then he was caught and died inexplicably in an ice prison.

Such a person seemed to have no relation to the phoenix bloodline, especially since the old rabbit demon emphasized in the letter that Feng Hen’s strength was mediocre and not exceptional—if he truly had the phoenix bloodline, he would definitely not be so ordinary.

Su Muluo put away the paper crane and fell into deep thought.

Feng Hen’s parents had long passed away, and he himself had been dead for many years. Now, the only person related to him by blood was probably his illegitimate child.

If he truly had phoenix bloodline, then his child should also have it. With the phoenix clan now extinct, even a trace of bloodline would make the child a part of Su Muluo’s kin.

Perhaps he should go find Feng Xuan and inquire more about Feng Hen and that illegitimate child…

Just as this thought crossed Su Muluo’s mind, his phone suddenly rang. It was a call from Liu He.

Su Muluo answered the call and heard Liu He’s urgent voice on the other end, “Mr. Su, did you meet privately with the bird clan elder Feng Xuan?”

A bad premonition surfaced in Su Muluo’s mind. He replied, “Yes, he came to see me yesterday. What’s wrong?”

Liu He was silent for a second and then said, “Feng Xuan was killed last night, murdered in a hotel—”

“And you were the last stranger he met before his death.”

“……”

A few minutes later, the call ended. The small black dragon lazily opened its eyes, tilted its head, and let out a “woof” at Su Muluo.

The phoenix was making noise and was unhappy.

It needed comforting.

Su Muluo said, “I’m not comforting you.” Then he patted the dragon and said, “We need to get up. We have to go out later.”

The small black dragon: “Woof?” Where are we going?

Su Muluo: “The Department of Abnormal Affairs.”

The small black dragon: “?”

Why do we need to go there again!

The small black dragon still remembered how its phoenix almost didn’t want it last time they went there. It grumbled in dissatisfaction, tightly clutching the sheets and showing that it didn’t want to leave.

Seeing the little dragon throwing a tantrum, Su Muluo couldn’t help but smile slightly. Innocently, he said, “It seems like I’ve caused trouble again.”

“The bird clan elder from yesterday was murdered, and since I was the last person he interacted with, I’ve become a key suspect. So, I need to go there for questioning.”

The small black dragon: “……”

It knew that every time they went to the Department of Abnormal Affairs, nothing good ever came out of it!

Every single time!!

So, the little dragon sulkily transformed into a human, hugged his phoenix tightly, and refused to move.

Chapter 26 – I’ll Support You

Chapter 26: I’ll Support You

When Feng Xuan spoke these words, not only Su Muluo but even Long Ling fell silent.

After a few seconds of awkwardness, Feng Xuan said, “What’s wrong? Did I excite you too much?”

“No,” Su Muluo replied calmly, “You probably have the wrong person.”

Because he had used a spell, the surrounding customers couldn’t hear their conversation at all. Otherwise, with Feng Xuan’s recent outburst, there would be a lot of strange and curious looks coming their way.

Feng Xuan’s expression softened, and he said kindly, “It’s alright. You were just born at that time and probably don’t remember the events of the past. As long as you’re willing to return with me, I’ll explain everything to you slowly.”

Su Muluo thought it wasn’t necessary. When he was just born, this elder’s ancestors might still have been in their eggs, so there was no need for any more talk. He released his demonic aura directly.

Feng Xuan intended to say something more, but suddenly he felt a wave of demonic power crash over him. It was as if he were standing at the base of a tsunami, looking up at a towering, imposing pressure.

In an instant, Feng Xuan’s face changed drastically. His muscles tensed up to the limit, and he could even hear his bones clattering in fear.

His soul seemed to be screaming, trembling uncontrollably, while he looked at the young man before him with disbelief, feeling an overwhelming fear rise from deep within.

The descendant of Feng Hen, who was just over twenty years old, couldn’t possibly possess such demonic power…

Moreover, the young man must be holding back, otherwise, he would have collapsed and been trembling on the ground by now…

Su Muluo didn’t want to put Feng Xuan in a difficult position. Seeing his changing expressions, he withdrew his demonic aura and casually poured him a cup of coffee.

Feng Xuan seemed to have walked through the gates of death. After his tensed muscles suddenly relaxed, he felt extreme weakness and exhaustion. His hand holding the coffee was trembling, and only after finishing the cup did he gradually calm down.

It was only then that he realized how foolish his actions had been.

As a bird tribe elder with nearly five hundred years of demonic power, he was considered an upper-level figure in the demon realm. Until now, no demon had ever exerted such pressure on him—such confidence was shattered today.

The aura of the young man before him was terrifyingly powerful. His demonic power must have exceeded five hundred years… Could it be six hundred years, or seven hundred years?

… No, it might even be a thousand years.

Cold sweat silently soaked through Feng Xuan’s clothes. Even though the shop had heating, he felt a chill.

In the demon realm today, there were only three beings with over a thousand years of power, who had long been hidden from the world. If this young man were one of those thousand-year-old demons, then he had mistakenly thought of him as a private descendant of the bird tribe, hoping to have him return to revitalize the bird tribe…

For a moment, Feng Xuan suddenly wanted to dig a hole and bury himself.

As the coffee cup reached the bottom, the bird tribe elder remained silent. Su Muluo lightly tapped the table and said, “I’d like to ask you a question.”

“!” Feng Xuan immediately snapped back to reality and said, “Please go ahead.”

Su Muluo asked, “Why did you think I was a private descendant of the bird tribe?”

“…” Feng Xuan fell silent for a few seconds and awkwardly said, “I have known Feng Hen for many years and can sense the aura of those related to him by blood. That day at the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings, I detected a similar aura on you.”

Su Muluo didn’t show it on his face but was slightly surprised inside. He didn’t know Feng Hen and rarely interacted with the bird tribe. Why would their auras be similar?

Could it be… Feng Hen has some bloodline of their Phoenix clan?

This doubt flashed through his mind but was not voiced. Instead, he said calmly, “You probably made a mistake. I’ve never met Feng Hen.”

Feng Xuan said, “Yes, it was indeed my mistake. I apologize for disturbing you.”

Only those with the same bloodline would have similar auras. As far as he knew, Feng Hen had no connection with those three thousand-year-old demons… If there had been a connection, the former clan leader wouldn’t have died in the ice prison for no reason.

Since the misunderstanding was cleared up, Feng Xuan wanted to leave quickly. However, just before he left, Su Muluo remembered something and asked, “Even if you wanted to investigate my address, why did you send people to attack me?”

Feng Xuan was stunned and said, “What?”

Su Muluo replied, “A few days ago, I was attacked by your people from the bird tribe.”

“……Impossible!” Feng Xuan exclaimed in shock, “I only instructed my people to find you and told them to stay in the shadows. They were not supposed to act against you!”

At that time, he still thought of this person as the descendant of Feng Hen, the future leader of the bird tribe. How could he send people to attack him?

Feng Xuan’s response was unexpected for Su Muluo, who fell into deep thought. At this moment, Long Ling snickered and said, “Is that so?”

The cold laugh made Feng Xuan shiver. He quickly asked, “Could you describe what those bird tribe people looked like? Any specific features?”

Su Muluo thought for a few seconds and said, “They were wearing black hoodies and had their hoods up, so I couldn’t see their faces. That’s all.”

Feng Xuan nodded and said, “Please wait a few days. I will investigate immediately. Once I find out, I will definitely come back and give you an explanation!”

After saying this, he saw Su Muluo nodding without any objections. He felt like he had been granted amnesty and left in a hurry.

After Feng Xuan left, Su Muluo glanced at Long Ling and said, “You don’t always have to be so fierce with people.”

This dragon had been like this right after hatching, extremely fierce, even spitting fireballs at the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings.

Long Ling looked innocent and said, “I wasn’t fierce with them. It was they who had other intentions towards my Phoenix.” After saying this, he snuggled up to Su Muluo and added, “I really like Phoenix.”

Seeing him taking advantage of him again, Su Muluo immediately put on a stern face and said, “I don’t like you.”

On the first day, this dragon had seen him feeling a bit unaccustomed and had restrained himself. But it wasn’t long before the dragon’s true nature was revealed, frequently coming over to take advantage of him.

It was utterly annoying.

Long Ling looked at Su Muluo’s sullen face and thought his Phoenix was both soft and cute, and he really wanted to take a bite.

But now the Phoenix would definitely not let him take a bite. Long Ling thought for a moment and changed the subject, “Did Phoenix know these people before?”

Su Muluo shook his head. “I don’t know him.”

Long Ling asked, “Then why does Feng Hen’s aura resemble that of a Phoenix?” He squinted slightly and added, “Could it be that the Phoenix had a little birdling outside without me knowing?”

Su Muluo was confused. “?”

He gave Long Ling a smack on the head and said, “You’re the one who would have a little birdling!”

Long Ling laughed and took Su Muluo’s wrist, rubbing his fingertips against it gently. He asked, “So, does he have Phoenix blood?”

“Possibly,” Su Muluo said, “so I want to investigate it.”

Feng Hen was the former clan leader of the bird tribe and died in the ice prison due to defection. Although it was decades ago, decades are not long for demons, and an investigation could still be conducted.

However, there hadn’t been any reports of a demon with Phoenix bloodline before, or it would have caused a stir. To be cautious, Su Muluo decided to have someone look into it.

He took out a piece of paper, wrote a few lines on it, and folded it into a paper crane. He let it flutter gently into the air.

The paper crane flew magically into the sky, wobbling slightly as it moved forward before vanishing from sight.

Long Ling watched the paper crane and said, “The Phoenix is sending love letters to others right in front of me.”

Su Muluo ignored him. Just then, another customer ordered a coffee, so he pushed the clingy dragon away and went to prepare it.

In the evening, when the coffee shop closed, Su Muluo stepped outside and was immediately hit by the cold wind.

It’s so cold, why is it so cold today?

As he thought about this, he suddenly felt a coat on his shoulders. He looked up to see Long Ling taking off his outerwear and draping it over him, then closing his fingers around Su Muluo’s hand and saying, “Phoenix is dressed too lightly; you’ll catch a cold.”

The warmth of the man’s palm spread slowly from their touching skin. Su Muluo was momentarily stunned, suddenly recalling how in the Mirror of Origin, his dragon had also removed his coat and held the silver-haired Phoenix’s hand…

Then he heard Long Ling’s next words: “Otherwise, Phoenix could just snuggle into my arms; they’re warm too.”

Su Muluo: “…”

He expressionlessly snatched the dragon’s coat away and continued walking alone.

Long Ling quickly caught up and took Su Muluo’s hand. Su Muluo initially tried to shake him off, but the warmth of Long Ling’s hand was very comforting. He paused for a second, symbolically struggled, and then stopped resisting.

Long Ling happily held Su Muluo’s slender fingers and asked, “When will the Phoenix make me a feather bracelet?”

When he was a little black dragon, the Phoenix had promised him a feather bracelet, and he remembered it well.

Su Muluo thought for a moment and said, “Tonight.”

Long Ling’s eyes lit up. “Phoenix is the best!”

He tried to nuzzle closer to Su Muluo, but Su Muluo, always wary, managed to avoid him.

Back at the rental apartment, Su Muluo appreciated the warmth of the room, while Long Ling quickly went into the bedroom and took out the feathers hidden under the pillow.

He had been keeping the Phoenix’s feathers he cherished under the pillow, like hidden treasures, and now there were four of them.

However, making a bracelet didn’t require so many feathers. Su Muluo let Long Ling choose, and Long Ling, after some deliberation, picked the most beautiful one.

Su Muluo asked, “Can you return the other three to me?”

Long Ling immediately took the other three feathers and ran away.

Su Muluo: Tsk.

Taking his feathers and taking advantage of him, how rude.

What use is this dragon?

Even though he thought this casually, he still carefully made the feather bracelet for his dragon.

When they went to the mall before, Su Muluo had specifically bought some beautiful weaving threads. With the feathers being long, he connected the feathers end to end with the weaving thread, adding two polished jade beads as embellishments. Since the thread was long, it could wrap around the wrist several times, and when worn, the feathers appeared white, soft, and with a faint, beautiful luster.

In no time, the feather bracelet was finished. Long Ling clearly loved it and refused to take it off once he put it on.

He happily walked around Su Muluo, suddenly hugging him. “I like Phoenix the most!”

Su Muluo remained calm and said, “I don’t like you.”

Long Ling buried his head into Su Muluo’s shoulder, rubbing against him. “Phoenix wouldn’t dislike me. Phoenix even made me a bracelet.” His smile grew, and he added, “This is the first gift Phoenix has given me.”

Su Muluo only realized this upon hearing him. In the past eighteen hundred years, his dragon had been in the egg, and even after becoming a little black dragon, he couldn’t give any gifts. So this feather bracelet was indeed the first gift he had given his dragon.

Long Ling looked at the feather bracelet in his hand, finding it beautiful, as pretty as his phoenix, and said happily, “I want to give the phoenix a gift too.”

Su Muluo tilted his head and asked, “What are you going to give?”

Long Ling thought for a moment and said, “It seems like people here usually give rings when they’re courting someone… Does the phoenix like those sparkling rings?”

Su Muluo asked, “You mean diamond rings?”

Long Ling nodded and looked at his phoenix with anticipation. “If the phoenix likes them, I’ll give you a diamond ring.” That way, he could also use the opportunity to court his phoenix!

Su Muluo had already seen through his little scheme, and with a slight smile, he said, “Although I’m not particularly fond of them, I’m curious about one thing.”

Long Ling felt a bit disappointed when he heard Su Muluo didn’t like diamond rings. “What does the phoenix want to ask?”

Su Muluo asked, “Do you have money?”

“…”

Long Ling fell silent.

Su Muluo continued, “A diamond ring is quite expensive, it costs several hundred thousand.”

Long Ling remained silent.

Su Muluo added, “When I first came to the human city, I saved up my first bit of money by selling feathers. It seems like you can’t even sell feathers.”

Long Ling: “…………”

Long Ling remained silent for a long time, seemingly struggling to come to terms with the fact that he had no money at all. After a while, he suddenly said with a sigh, “I can sell scales.”

His tone was filled with helplessness, sadness, and resentment towards this money-driven world.

Su Muluo couldn’t help but laugh, gently patting his head and saying with affection, “Be good, let me take care of you.”

Chapter 25 – Revitalizing the Bird Clan!

Chapter 25: Revitalizing the Bird Clan!

Su Muluo twirled the little black dragon around his finger like a keychain, swinging it back and forth.

The little black dragon, feeling neglected as his phoenix was busy picking out clothes, let out an unhappy “squeak.”

Su Muluo continued to ignore him.

The little black dragon began to wriggle and twist.

After a while, the little black dragon managed to untangle itself and slipped off Su Muluo’s finger with a swift “whoosh”—only to be caught immediately by Su Muluo.

In a quiet corner of the mall, Su Muluo poked the little dragon in his palm and asked, “Will you take advantage of me again next time?”

The little black dragon, hugging a feather, rubbed its soft little horns against Su Muluo’s fingers, making pitiful sounds.

No, I won’t. The phoenix is the best.

Su Muluo rubbed its little horns and laughed, “Always acting cute.”

Then he tried to take his feather back.

The little black dragon hugged it tightly.

Su Muluo: “?”

He tugged at the feather, but it wouldn’t budge. He glared at the little black dragon.

The little black dragon: “Squeak.”

I want it!

This phoenix feather was even more beautiful than the previous ones, more delicate and soft, carrying a fragrant scent filled with the phoenix’s essence.

Really liked it.

The little black dragon looked at Su Muluo expectantly, its dark golden dragon eyes sparkling, tail swishing back and forth.

After a few seconds of eye contact, Su Muluo let go.

Forget it, since his dragon liked it, he could have it.

Though he felt a bit heartbroken.

The little black dragon cheered: “Yippee!”

It then transformed into human form, smiling with curved eyebrows, and rubbed its face against Su Muluo’s cheek, “The phoenix is so nice, I love the phoenix the most.”

The movement was swift, and before Su Muluo could react or dodge, it was done.

Su Muluo: “…”

He expressionlessly patted Long Ling.

Long Ling happily put the feather away. Even if he got hit, it was gentle. Besides, the phoenix gave him a beautiful feather, which made the black dragon very happy, even wanting to hug and kiss the phoenix.

However, kissing was definitely impossible. If he dared to kiss here, the phoenix would explode and beat him up, then throw him out.

Thinking about it felt tragic.

The two of them continued shopping around the mall, with Su Muluo buying several outfits for Long Ling, along with some daily necessities.

By noon, they passed by a hotpot restaurant. Su Muluo stopped immediately, enticed by the aroma wafting out.

Long Ling asked, “Does the phoenix want to eat hotpot?”

Su Muluo: “Yes.”

Although he had made it at home before, it was different from the restaurant, and he was looking forward to the taste.

Long Ling had no objections and entered the hotpot restaurant with his phoenix. Su Muluo ordered a mandarin duck pot, remembering that Long Ling, when he was still a little black dragon, couldn’t handle spicy food, so he turned the clear soup pot towards him.

Unexpectedly, Long Ling pouted, “I don’t want to eat clear soup.”

He then moved from across the table to sit beside Su Muluo.

Su Muluo: “? Sit back.”

Long Ling didn’t move, “I want to eat spicy food too.”

“I can turn the spicy pot to your side,” Su Muluo pushed him, “Don’t sit next to me.” And so close!

“No,” Long Ling said, looking like he was doing it for Su Muluo’s sake, “Phoenix also wants to eat spicy food, if I turn it to my side, it won’t be convenient for you to reach.”

Su Muluo: “…”

The table isn’t that big, you can easily reach it!

He felt this dragon just wanted to take advantage of him. But he was sitting against the wall, and the only way out was for Long Ling to move, which he wouldn’t… for now, he couldn’t change seats.

Long Ling happily held Su Muluo’s hand, Su Muluo glanced at him and stayed silent.

The dishes were quickly served, the table filled with beef, tripe, duck intestine, enoki mushrooms, and various meats and vegetables. Long Ling dipped a piece of beef in the spicy pot and placed it in Su Muluo’s bowl.

“For the phoenix.”

Su Muluo took a bite.

The next second, he exclaimed, “So spicy!”

This hotpot restaurant was a Chongqing hotpot place, and Su Muluo had chosen medium spicy for the broth, thinking he could handle it. But he was instantly overwhelmed by the spiciness.

Long Ling immediately handed him the iced lemon water from the table. Su Muluo took a big gulp, finally feeling a bit relieved.

Though extremely spicy, the hotpot was delicious, making people want to keep eating. Su Muluo sipped the lemon water in small gulps, watching Long Ling eat a piece of tripe he had just cooked in the spicy broth.

He stopped, wanting to see Long Ling’s reaction to the spiciness.

But Long Ling’s expression didn’t change at all. He didn’t seem to feel the spiciness and even started cooking some beef for Su Muluo.

Su Muluo: “?”

Shocked, he asked, “Aren’t you feeling the heat?”

Long Ling looked at him, “Not at all. Is this really spicy?”

Su Muluo: “Didn’t you used to not be able to eat spicy food?”

Long Ling dipped the cooked beef in the clear broth and placed it in Su Muluo’s bowl, “But I can now.”

Su Muluo: “…”

His plan to see the dragon cry from spiciness fell through. Silently, he ate the piece of beef.

By the end of the meal, Su Muluo’s lips were red and slightly swollen from the spiciness. Long Ling frequently turned to look at him.

Su Muluo, puzzled, asked, “Why are you staring at me?”

A hint of amusement flickered in Long Ling’s eyes, “The phoenix’s lips are red, like they’ve been kissed.”

Su Muluo: “?”

Long Ling: “I want to kiss.”

Su Muluo: “???”

Su Muluo snatched the beef from Long Ling’s bowl.

After a moment of silence.

This was only the second day he’d been with Long Ling. Although he found Long Ling awkward the first day, by the second day, everything felt natural.

It must be because this dragon was shameless and always took advantage of him!

Thinking this, he poked Long Ling.

Long Ling obediently let him poke, watching his phoenix, a gentle smile tugging at his lips.

After lunch, they returned to their rented apartment.

“Maybe we need to rent a new place,” Su Muluo said as they entered, “There’s only one bedroom here, which isn’t very convenient.”

Long Ling didn’t like the sound of that, “Isn’t one bedroom enough?”

Su Muluo glanced at him, “Oh, so you like sleeping on the sofa.”

Long Ling: “…”

That’s not what he meant!

He wanted to sleep with the phoenix!

Long Ling felt a bit glum. Su Muluo laughed, “Come work with me this afternoon.”

He had closed the coffee shop yesterday, and if he didn’t open it this afternoon, they wouldn’t have any income for two days.

Long Ling agreed, “Then the phoenix must stay with me all the time. I need to guard the phoenix.”

Su Muluo: “I don’t need you to guard me; nothing will happen to me.”

Long Ling insisted, “No, what if the phoenix suddenly gets sleepy?”

Su Muluo fell silent.

Indeed, he had forgotten about that.

However, he had been less sleepy the past few days, only feeling sleepy at night now. Maybe in a few more days, this problem would go away.

In the afternoon, Su Muluo and Long Ling went to the coffee shop. When they arrived, they saw a few cats sitting obediently at the employee lounge door, neither meowing nor wandering.

A boy came out of the lounge, holding a bag of trash filled with the cat food cans from the day before. He intended to take out the trash, but upon seeing Su Muluo, he greeted, “Good afternoon.”

Then his gaze shifted to the man in black beside Su Muluo.

Qiansui: “…”

In the next instant, Qiansui transformed into an orange cat and dashed into the lounge corner with a “whoosh.”

Su Muluo looked at Long Ling, “Did you scare him?”

Long Ling, looking innocent, “How could I?”

Su Muluo knew that while Long Ling had never liked Qiansui, he wouldn’t deliberately make things difficult for him. After examining Long Ling for a few seconds, he realized it was Long Ling’s strong demon aura that had frightened Qiansui.

“Conceal your aura; it’s too conspicuous.”

He remembered that when he first became human, he also had trouble controlling his aura, often scaring the little demons around him and attracting big demons with ill intentions. Only after learning to fully conceal his aura did he avoid unnecessary trouble.

Long Ling tilted his head, and a few seconds later, Su Muluo felt his aura completely retract, no longer detectable.

Qiansui slowly emerged from the lounge, “meowing” softly, and led the other cats back inside.

After a while, the coffee shop opened. The customers who came in were very surprised to find that the shop had a new employee. He was cold and handsome, but his gaze was extremely gentle when he looked at the young shop owner.

At two in the afternoon, a young man with earrings walked into the coffee shop. As soon as he entered, he said, “Boss! I took my cat, Doumi, to get vaccinated today. It was so well-behaved. Let me show you some photos!”

He had adopted the black cat from the shop last time, named it Doumi, and couldn’t wait to share pictures of it with Su Muluo. However, before he could take out his phone, he felt a cold, sharp gaze fall on him. He looked up and saw a handsome man in black standing beside Su Muluo, looking at him indifferently.

“…”

The young man silently put his phone away and said, “A special coffee, please.”

Su Muluo replied gently, “Sure.”

After the young man found a seat, Su Muluo turned to Long Ling and said, “Why are you being so harsh to the customers?”

Long Ling lazily rested his chin on Su Muluo’s shoulder and said, “He’s too close with Phoenix.”

Su Muluo asked, “How do you see that?”

“I don’t care. He’s too close,” Long Ling said. “Phoenix can only be close to me, not to others.”

Su Muluo met his gaze and didn’t notice the content of his words because he suddenly realized how close the dragon was to him. He immediately tried to push him away.

—But Long Ling grabbed his wrist, his arm naturally wrapping around Su Muluo’s waist, half-embracing him.

Su Muluo: “?!”

His reaction was swift. He quickly cast a spell to create an illusion so that other customers would still see them as they were before, without anything unusual.

Then he said, “Let go!”

“No,” Long Ling’s eyes narrowed with satisfaction as he nuzzled Phoenix’s soft black hair. “Phoenix is soft. I like holding Phoenix.”

Su Muluo: “???”

How did it escalate to this level so quickly?

This was too much!

So he said very coldly, “If you don’t let go, I’ll tie you up.”

Long Ling paused slightly.

Su Muluo continued, “I’ll also take away the feathers you hide under the pillow.”

Long Ling: “!”

Long Ling immediately and obediently let go, saying, “Phoenix is the best.”

Su Muluo sneered and ignored him.

After a while, the young man finished his coffee and left. Shortly after he left, a man came in.

Su Muluo’s gaze fell on him, and he raised his eyebrows slightly.

He had seen this person before at the Bureau of the Extraordinary. It was Feng Xuan, an elder of the bird clan.

A few days ago, he had been attacked by the bird clan. Although the attack wasn’t hostile, more like a test, now it might not just be a test.

Long Ling also recognized Feng Xuan and said, “Phoenix, you don’t have to deal with him. I’ll handle it.”

Su Muluo felt that Long Ling’s “handling” might mean throwing the other person out without a word. But instead of directly driving Feng Xuan away, he wanted to know why the other person had come, so he said, “No rush, let me ask him first.”

As soon as Feng Xuan stepped into the coffee shop, he sensed something was wrong.

As an elder of the bird clan for many years, with profound strength and many experiences, he had a keen intuition for danger.

Seeing the young shop owner and the man beside him, alarm bells rang in his heart, and he immediately wanted to leave.

Although these two had no demonic aura, they made him feel a sense of fear, especially the man in black, who seemed like a beast emerging from the depths of hell, ready to devour people in an instant.

“…”

Cold sweat appeared on Feng Xuan’s forehead, but he didn’t leave. Instead, he slowly walked to the counter.

Su Muluo said, “Is there something you need, Elder Feng?”

He got straight to the point, his tone calm, but it startled Feng Xuan again.

At least there was no hostility in his words. This made Feng Xuan secretly relieved, feeling that this beautiful young man was approachable. So he directly said, “I’m here to find someone.”

After seeing this young man at the Bureau of the Extraordinary, he had remembered his appearance and released the bird clan’s scouts in Lincheng. Within a few days, he found this coffee shop and immediately came over.

Su Muluo said, “There shouldn’t be anyone you know here.”

“There is,” Feng Xuan stared at him and said, “I’m looking for you.”

Su Muluo raised his eyebrows slightly. For a moment, he even thought Feng Xuan had recognized his identity as Phoenix, but he quickly denied it.

In the past eighteen hundred years, only his dragon and the old rabbit demon knew his identity. The old rabbit demon would never betray him, and with Feng Xuan’s strength, he couldn’t possibly see through his true form.

So Feng Xuan couldn’t be looking for him because he’s Phoenix. There must be another reason.

Long Ling, hearing this, also coldly stared at Feng Xuan. For a moment, Feng Xuan felt like the Grim Reaper’s scythe was hanging over his neck, cold sweat soaking his clothes, but he still stood straight, maintaining his composure.

“Fifty years ago, Feng Hen, the bird clan leader, ascended to stabilize his position. He married the daughter of the great elder,” Feng Xuan said. “Later, Feng Hen fell in love with a human woman and ran away, abandoning the bird clan… The great elder was furious and brought Feng Hen back, imprisoning him in the ice prison.”

Su Muluo said, “Wait, what does this have to do with you looking for me?”

Feng Xuan said, “You’ll know soon.”

Then he paused and continued, “A few days later, Feng Hen was found dead in the ice prison, causing a shock in the bird clan. Some believed the great elder killed Feng Hen, while others thought Feng Hen committed suicide out of guilt. Since that day, the bird clan split into two factions, constantly fighting.”

Long Ling lazily held Su Muluo’s hand, lightly pinching his fingers. Su Muluo tried to pull his hand back but was held tightly, and he slapped Long Ling in anger.

However, he remained calm and said, “I’m not from the bird clan. Telling me this is useless.”

Feng Xuan shook his head and continued, “Because of years of conflict, the bird clan has no leader and our status in the demon world has declined, unlike before. The wolf clan has coveted us for many years. If this continues, the bird clan might soon be conquered… So, at this time, someone must step up, take over the position of clan leader, and end this chaos.”

Su Muluo thought he was going to continue talking about the bird clan’s future development. He was ready to patiently listen, but then he saw Feng Xuan looking at him expectantly, slapping the table excitedly, and saying:

“And you are the one I’ve been searching for years—

“You are Feng Hen’s illegitimate child from twenty years ago, the only bloodline of the former clan leader, the most suitable heir for the bird clan, and our only hope!”

Su Muluo: “…”

What?

Chapter 24 – Arrogance

Chapter 24: Arrogance

“Is the phoenix in heat?”

“…”

Su Muluo, who was in a daze, heard this and his scattered thoughts started to gather. His head didn’t feel as foggy anymore.

In short, he was woken up by anger.

He then raised his hand and gave Long Ling a smack on the head.

Long Ling: “?”

He didn’t expect his phoenix to react this way, showing a bit of surprise on his face, which was soon followed by another smack from Su Muluo.

Even though his phoenix’s hits were light, Long Ling moved closer, gently holding Su Muluo’s wrist, and said, “Phoenix, you’re awake? How are you feeling? Any better?”

Su Muluo hugged the blanket, feeling slightly relieved from the unbearable heat but still somewhat uncomfortable, not wanting to speak much.

However, he remembered the nonsense this dragon just spouted and weakly retorted, “You’re the one in heat… I don’t have a heat period.”

Long Ling remained silent, thinking that Su Muluo had previously claimed not to have a molting period either, but it turned out he did.

Of course, he wouldn’t say such a thing out loud, fearing he might get hit again. Instead, he gently soothed, “Alright, no heat period then. If Phoenix says no, then there’s none. I must have been mistaken.”

For now, there’s none… But will there really never be?

Long Ling still had a bit of expectation in his heart. Su Muluo, hearing this, snorted softly and buried his face into the pillow.

Even though his phoenix was awake, he still looked listless. Seeing this, Long Ling poured him a cup of warm water, saying, “Have some water, it’ll help a bit.”

Su Muluo didn’t want to move and said, “I want something cold.”

Long Ling refused, “No, it’s cold weather now, drinking cold water could make you sick.”

“I won’t get sick,” Su Muluo mumbled, feeling the persistent heat and dizziness. “I just want something cold.”

His voice, soft due to discomfort, sounded like he was whining. Long Ling felt a string in his heart being lightly plucked, making him want to hug his phoenix and kiss him.

But since his phoenix was feeling unwell, he restrained himself, applying slight force with his fingertips to coat the cup with a thin layer of frost.

“Just a bit cold,” Long Ling brought the cup to Su Muluo’s lips. “Can’t drink too cold.”

Su Muluo glanced at the cup, then at him, his eyes brightening. “What kind of dragon are you?”

Long Ling replied, “A black dragon.”

Honestly, he wasn’t very clear about his own identity or what a black dragon represented among the dragon tribe.

Su Muluo gave a simple “oh” and didn’t ask further, taking the cup of cold water and drinking it in one go. He squinted his eyes in delight. “So good.”

The slightly cold liquid alleviated some of the heat, and without that unbearable warmth, he felt a bit better. He finished the entire cup of cold water and snuggled back into the blanket.

Long Ling thought his phoenix now resembled a well-fed kitten, all soft and cuddly, enjoying the comfort of the bed.

If only he could snuggle into my arms.

This thought crossed his mind, but he didn’t show it. Instead, he asked, “Feeling better now?”

Su Muluo nodded.

Long Ling touched his forehead, finding it not as hot as before, and asked, “If it’s not a heat period, could it be a fever?”

“I’m not in heat,” Su Muluo refuted again, then said, “And I don’t get fevers.”

After all, as a phoenix, he wouldn’t get sick easily.

But this time was indeed strange. From initially feeling sleepy and shedding feathers to now being feverish in the middle of the night… It was worrying no matter how you looked at it.

Su Muluo furrowed his brows slightly and glanced at Long Ling.

Long Ling, understanding what he wanted to say, took the blame naturally, “Maybe it’s related to me.”

“I think so too,” Su Muluo said, “I started feeling strange when you were about to transform.”

He sounded a bit aggrieved but didn’t really mean to blame him, just stating a fact.

Long Ling thought for a moment and said, “I should have hatched earlier, or before the phoenix, so that the phoenix wouldn’t have to suffer.”

Clearly, there was some connection between them. Maybe their souls were tied together, so when he underwent a change, his phoenix would be affected too.

If he had hatched earlier than the phoenix, the situation might have reversed, and he would have been the one affected, sparing his phoenix the discomfort.

Su Muluo shook his head after hearing this, “We only discovered this today; we didn’t know before. And also…”

And also, he liked this bond, like an unbreakable tie binding him to his dragon.

He didn’t say the latter part, just keeping it as a small thought in his heart. Long Ling stared at him for a few seconds, seeing his phoenix not continue, and asked, “And also what?”

Su Muluo glanced at him, pulled the blanket over his head.

Long Ling shook the blanket, “And also what? Phoenix hasn’t finished talking.”

The blanket shook, and Su Muluo slowly turned his back to him.

Long Ling’s dark golden eyes showed a hint of amusement. After a few seconds, he said, “Phoenix, I can’t sleep.”

Su Muluo stayed silent.

Long Ling continued, “The sofa is hard.”

Su Muluo stayed silent.

Long Ling added, “It’s cold outside.”

Su Muluo stayed silent.

After a pause, Long Ling pitifully said, “Phoenix is so mean, coaxing Phoenix just now, but now Phoenix doesn’t want me anymore.”

“…”

Su Muluo poked his head out of the blanket, revealing only his eyes, “You just said you weren’t afraid of the cold.”

Long Ling was slightly choked by this. The next second, he decisively transformed into a small black dragon.

The little black dragon nestled by the pillow, raising its head and looking pitifully at his phoenix.

Su Muluo stayed silent.

Then he pulled the blanket open a bit.

The little black dragon happily made a soft sound and burrowed into the blanket, curling up next to his phoenix.

Su Muluo looked at the soft little dragon and gently poked it.

The little black dragon immediately hugged his finger, rubbing its small horns against it.

Su Muluo’s lips curled up slightly. The discomfort of sleeping alone finally disappeared. He closed his eyes and fell asleep next to his dragon.

The next morning, Su Muluo took Long Ling shopping, buying clothes.

The mall was bustling with people everywhere. Standing together, Su Muluo and Long Ling’s looks attracted quite a bit of attention.

This made Long Ling very dissatisfied, “If I had known, we should have worn masks before going out.”

Su Muluo thought for a moment, “That would only draw more attention.”

“Doesn’t matter,” Long Ling said, “At least this way, they wouldn’t see Phoenix’s face. Phoenix is so good-looking, I don’t want them to see.”

This was his first time accompanying his phoenix out in human form. Without the perspective of a small dragon, he could now clearly feel the gazes directed at his phoenix.

He didn’t like those admiring gazes, feeling like the treasure he wanted to hide was exposed to the daylight, attracting greedy looks… This stirred his possessiveness and made him very unhappy. He just wanted to take his phoenix back home, hide him in a place only he knew, and stroke his feathers.

Su Muluo saw through his thoughts instantly, “You wish. I’m not letting you stroke my feathers.”

Then he walked ahead quickly.

The mall was large, and they strolled slowly. A few minutes later, Su Muluo spotted a piece of clothing, “Do you like it?”

Long Ling glanced at it, “If Phoenix likes it, I like it.”

Su Muluo asked the sales clerk to bring over the clothing and compared it against Long Ling.

“Hmm, it seems nice,” Su Muluo said, “Do you want to try it on?”

Long Ling nodded, “How do I try it on?”

“There’s a fitting room over there. You just change into this and come out for me to see,” Su Muluo explained.

Long Ling made a sound of acknowledgment but didn’t move.

Su Muluo: “What’s wrong?”

Long Ling: “I don’t know how.”

Su Muluo: “?”

“I don’t know how to wear such clothes,” Long Ling said matter-of-factly, “The clothes I’m wearing now are transformed from my scales, so I’ve never worn human clothes before.”

Su Muluo paused for a moment, “You don’t expect me to help you dress, do you?”

Long Ling looked innocent, “But if Phoenix doesn’t teach me, I really don’t know how to wear them.”

This argument seemed quite reasonable and convincing. Su Muluo looked at Long Ling, whose face clearly said, “I’m not lying, I’m telling the truth, I’m very obedient,” and remained silent for a few seconds.

Then he clicked his tongue, turned around, and headed for the fitting room.

Long Ling obediently followed him, so the sales clerk watched in astonishment as the two men entered the same fitting room.

Sales clerk: “…”

She lowered her head and started posting on social media.

In the dressing room, Su Muluo bowed his head as he buttoned up Long Ling’s shirt.

The space was small, just enough to fit one adult man. If there were two people, it would be cramped—so even though Su Muluo tried to keep his distance, he was still very close to Long Ling.

Too close, he could even smell Long Ling’s scent… It was familiar, comforting, and pleasant to him.

Su Muluo stayed silent, and Long Ling also did not speak. When Su Muluo finished fastening the second to last button and looked up, he found Long Ling watching him intently, his dark golden eyes unblinking.

Before they went out, Long Ling had concealed his eyes to look like ordinary black ones. But here, he reverted to his original eye color.

Those dark golden eyes were profoundly deep, the eyes of a dragon. Cold as snowy mountains when distant, yet now they were a vast, gentle ocean, quietly and intently focused on Su Muluo, as if he was the only person in the world.

Su Muluo met Long Ling’s gaze for a few seconds before abruptly looking away, saying, “All done.”

He tried to step back immediately but forgot about the cramped space and almost bumped into the door behind him—

Long Ling swiftly raised his hand, his long, strong fingers pressing against the back of Su Muluo’s head, saying, “Be careful.”

Now they were even closer. Su Muluo suddenly realized that his little black dragon, usually small and delicate, was taller than him by half a head when in human form. At this moment, with his hand protecting the back of his head, Long Ling almost enveloped him completely in his embrace.

“…”

Without hesitation, Su Muluo opened the dressing room door and walked out.

Long Ling watched his retreating figure without looking back, a slight smile on his lips, thinking that his phoenix had just been shy.

And he had let him hold him.

So, does that mean he could hold his phoenix in bed tonight?

The little black dragon’s thoughts were very pleasant as he followed Su Muluo’s steps.

However, despite his beautiful thoughts, reality was harsh. Long Ling soon realized that his excuse of not knowing how to dress didn’t work because his phoenix didn’t give him a chance to try on clothes.

“These few, let’s buy them all.”

Long Ling watched as Su Muluo efficiently picked out several pieces of clothing, trying to remind him, “I haven’t tried them on yet.”

Su Muluo replied, “No need to try.”

Long Ling said, “But if I don’t try them on, what if they don’t fit?”

Su Muluo gave him a glance, his tone indifferent, “Then we’ll buy more. I have money.”

Long Ling: “…”

The penniless black dragon silently followed the wealthy phoenix without a word.

After leaving that store, Su Muluo planned to continue looking in another store. But after just a few steps, a feather floated down from him.

Su Muluo: “?”

Another one fell???

Long Ling quickly caught the feather.

Su Muluo looked at him and said, “Give it to me.”

Long Ling curved his lips, saying, “No, phoenix feathers are so soft, I want it.”

Su Muluo: “I already gave you three feathers to make a bracelet last time, you can’t have this one.”

Even fallen feathers were precious to him. If it weren’t for the fact that this was his dragon, he wouldn’t give even one. Giving three at once was already very generous! No more!

After thinking for a moment, Long Ling said, “Then let me kiss you once and I’ll give it to you.”

Su Muluo: “?”

Long Ling’s eyes sparkled as he said, “Just one kiss, a small one.”

Su Muluo: “??”

That’s his feather! Why should he kiss for it!

With a blank expression, he said, “No kiss, give it to me now.”

Long Ling said, “No kiss, no feather. I’ve kissed the phoenix several times, but the phoenix doesn’t even kiss me once, so stingy.”

After saying this, he hid the feather away.

Very arrogant.

Su Muluo: “…”

Moments later, a small black dragon was tied into a very pretty knot, hanging from Su Muluo’s finger like a keychain, swinging back and forth, back and forth.

His eyes were filled with deep resentment.

But he still stubbornly clutched the feather tightly with his little paws, refusing to let go.

Chapter 23 – Rutting Period?

Chapter 23: Rutting Period?

Su Muluo slept deeply and comfortably, feeling as if he was nestled in a warm embrace, reminiscent of when he was a little phoenix.

Back then, he would snuggle up to the dragon egg, instinctively absorbing its warmth.

As morning light filtered through the thin curtains, Su Muluo opened his eyes.

It was still a bit cold, so he curled up in the soft bedding, lazily rubbing against the hand beside him.

Wait, a hand?

Su Muluo suddenly became fully awake and looked up—

A man in black was sitting by the bed, wearing a mask, silently watching him.

“…”

Su Muluo remained speechless for a while.

The room was very quiet, almost awkwardly so. Although the dark golden eyes behind the man’s mask showed no emotion, Su Muluo somehow sensed a hint of unease.

Noticing this, he sat up and hesitantly spoke his first words: “Why are you wearing a mask?”

The man was silent for a moment before replying in a low voice, “I’m afraid you’ll find me ugly.”

The deep, pleasant voice was exactly like the one in his dreams. Su Muluo reached out slowly, testing, and removed the mask.

The man remained motionless, allowing him to take it off, revealing a handsome and flawless face, identical to what Su Muluo had seen in the Mirror of Origin.

But now, the man’s expression was not natural, showing obvious tension.

Su Muluo looked at him for a while, then lightly coughed and averted his gaze, saying, “Indeed.”

Man: “…”

Su Muluo then laughed and said, “Just kidding, you’re not ugly at all. In fact, you’re quite handsome.”

The man’s eyes brightened slightly, and he raised his hand, trying to embrace him.

Su Muluo was startled and instinctively moved aside.

He knew this man was his dragon, but he used to be a little dragon and now had turned into a real person. Suddenly, he found himself unsure how to interact with him.

It was like someone you had known for years suddenly changed drastically, and no one could easily accept that. Moreover, this was his dragon, his partner, closer than anyone else… Realizing this, Su Muluo felt even more confused about his feelings.

The man noticed his reaction, and a hint of sadness flashed in his dark golden eyes. But he quickly hid it, as he had anticipated this outcome. He soon concealed his sadness and asked, “Is the phoenix hungry? Do you want something to eat?”

The term “phoenix” reminded Su Muluo of the silver-haired young man in the Mirror of Origin, making his expression darken slightly.

He looked up at the man again and shook his head, “I’m not hungry.”

“But you’ve been sleeping for a whole day,” the man said. “The phoenix has been sleeping a lot recently and shedding feathers. You need to eat more to recover.”

Su Muluo: “…” No need to remind him about the shedding.

So he changed the subject, “I still don’t know your name. Do you have one?”

He clearly remembered his own name when he hatched, “Su Muluo.” Although he used to call his dragon Little Black Dragon, the other must have a name too.

The man nodded, “Long Ling.”

Long Ling.

Su Muluo tasted the name in his mind, and a different kind of emotion emerged, like a taste of honey, making him feel slightly sweet inside and out.

He smiled and said, “It’s a nice name.”

Long Ling’s gaze tightened, capturing this smile in his eyes. He liked seeing Su Muluo smile at him. His phoenix’s smile was beautiful, with eyes full of gentleness… reflecting only him.

He wanted the phoenix to smile at him every day, only at him.

Possessiveness, like sticky mud, spread in his heart. Long Ling showed no sign of it on his face, lowering his head and gently approaching Su Muluo.

The phoenix was right in front of him, and he inhaled the scent he liked from this person, gradually suppressing the restlessness in his heart.

Su Muluo, not knowing his intentions, tilted his head and asked, “You could already turn into a human before, right?”

Long Ling nodded again.

Su Muluo knew this dragon had pretended in front of him for several days and secretly took advantage of him. If it were before, he would have angrily patted the dragon’s head, but looking at the man sitting in front of him now, he didn’t know how to start.

Finally, he could only change the subject, “I need to get up and change. Can you go out for a bit?”

Long Ling responded with an “oh” but did not move.

“Can’t I stay here?”

Su Muluo: “Why should you stay here?”

Long Ling was very honest: “I want to see the phoenix.”

Su Muluo appreciated his honesty and promptly pushed him out.

The door closed, and Long Ling waited outside, wandering around in boredom.

Unhappy.

He hadn’t revealed his human form earlier because he was unsure if the phoenix would like his appearance and was worried the phoenix would distance himself after seeing his human form.

Now it seemed his worries were justified.

But Long Ling did not regret it. After all, Su Muluo’s body had some problems recently, and he needed to stay by the phoenix’s side to protect him.

Moreover, they had time. Maybe it wouldn’t take long for his phoenix to accept him.

After a few minutes, Su Muluo finished changing and opened the door. Long Ling immediately approached, asking, “Does the phoenix want breakfast? I can make it for you.”

Su Muluo asked, “Can you cook?”

Long Ling paused, “I can learn.”

Su Muluo laughed, “Alright, then learn from me.”

Today’s breakfast was simple porridge, not requiring much skill. First, soak the rice for half an hour, add a few drops of sesame oil, pour the rice into boiling water, stir over high heat for a few minutes until the grains swell and separate, then simmer over low heat.

As Su Muluo stirred the rice with a spoon, Long Ling watched from the side. Suddenly, Long Ling reached from behind, naturally covering Su Muluo’s hand and holding the spoon.

Su Muluo: “!”

He immediately let go of the spoon and stepped aside.

Long Ling paused and asked, “Isn’t the phoenix going to teach me?”

His tone sounded a bit aggrieved, and seeing the gloom in his eyes, Su Muluo opened his mouth to say something… but couldn’t, so he silently averted his gaze.

He felt troubled too. When Little Black Dragon hatched, he didn’t react this way.

But he knew that turning into a human meant having a closer relationship with his dragon, a relationship completely different from before—maybe because he subconsciously couldn’t accept this change, he felt so uneasy.

Su Muluo rubbed his forehead, sighing helplessly, “Just stir it a bit more, then let it simmer. Nothing else needs to be done.”

Long Ling responded with an “oh” and slowly stirred the porridge.

Neither spoke again. After half an hour, the porridge was ready. Long Ling asked, “Do you want to try it?”

Su Muluo was checking his phone nearby. Hearing this, he looked up and saw a spoonful of cooled porridge offered to him.

He took a sip, finding it soft and sticky, “Tastes good.”

Long Ling’s lips curved slightly, and he took out a bowl to serve the porridge.

Su Muluo watched him for a few seconds and suddenly asked, “Aren’t you going to taste it?”

“I’ve tried it.”

Su Muluo: “……”

So did he switch spoons?

Long Ling seemed to sense his thoughts and said, “No.”

Then he ran off with the bowl.

Su Muluo: “????”

He’s taking advantage of him again!

As expected, he’s not a proper dragon!

Su Muluo was so annoyed, but he had no way to deal with this dragon… He could only leave with a dark face and in silence.

Long Ling put the porridge he had served for Su Muluo on the table and took a bowl for himself. The two of them sat at the dining table and drank porridge. After a while, Su Muluo asked, “Why did you only hatch after coming here?”

This was a question he had wanted to ask before. Long Ling replied, “It has nothing to do with being here; it’s just that the time had come.”

Su Muluo said, “Oh,” and asked, “Then why did you need me to cook for you?”

Long Ling said, “Dragons need high temperatures to hatch.”

Su Muluo: “…… Pfft.”

Although Long Ling said it seriously, Su Muluo couldn’t help but laugh when he remembered the dragon egg that nearly got cooked into a dead egg.

Long Ling saw him laughing and smiled slightly, “The phoenix looks really good when smiling.”

Su Muluo immediately stopped smiling.

Long Ling: “……”

Su Muluo took a slow sip of porridge, thought of something, and asked, “I have another question. Why didn’t you let me pinch your tail?”

Long Ling, with anticipation, asked, “Does the phoenix let me touch its feathers?”

Su Muluo looked at him warily: “No.”

“Then I won’t let you either.” Long Ling said a bit unhappily, “I’ll let you pinch my tail when the phoenix lets me touch its feathers.”

Su Muluo: Tsk.

He stopped talking and continued to drink his porridge.

When he was almost done with his bowl, Su Muluo heard Long Ling ask, “Does the phoenix know why it fainted yesterday?”

Su Muluo shook his head and said, “If I had known, I wouldn’t have bothered with those people last night and would have gone straight home.”

He hadn’t expected to be so exhausted that he fell asleep on the street… Fortunately, his dragon brought him back.

Su Muluo suddenly felt a pang of realization and asked, “Wait, how did you bring me back last night?”

“Carried you,” Long Ling blinked and said, “The phoenix is light and soft, easy to carry.”

Su Muluo: “……”

Long Ling added, “I’d like to carry you again.”

Su Muluo: “……”

Su Muluo pushed the bowl towards Long Ling and said, “Go wash the dishes!”

So annoyed, he would make this person do all the housework from now on!

Long Ling took the bowl obediently and went to the kitchen.

Su Muluo decided not to go to the café today. After all, he hadn’t fully adjusted to interacting with Long Ling and didn’t know how to introduce him to the customers.

So, for the rest of the day, the two of them stayed in the rented apartment and didn’t go out.

At ten in the evening, Su Muluo took a shower, and then it was Long Ling’s turn—he initially tried to use the excuse that he didn’t know how to bathe to get Su Muluo to help him, but Su Muluo rejected him ruthlessly.

The sound of water came from the bathroom, and Su Muluo sat on the sofa playing with his phone. After a while, the water stopped, and Long Ling came out from the bathroom.

Su Muluo looked up—he saw the man’s well-defined upper body, with only a towel wrapped around his waist.

Su Muluo was shocked: “Where are your clothes???”

Long Ling innocently shrugged: “I don’t have any.” Then he added, “The phoenix’s pajamas are too small, I can’t wear them.”

Su Muluo: “But you were wearing clothes this morning!”

“That was my scales,” Long Ling said, “I don’t have a second set of clothes.”

Su Muluo: “……”

Su Muluo stared at the innocent-looking Long Ling for a moment, sighed, and said, “Fine, I didn’t think of that. I’ll take you out to buy some clothes tomorrow.”

Long Ling responded eagerly, “It’s late. Is the phoenix going to sleep?”

Su Muluo glanced at the time and realized it was already ten o’clock. Strangely, he wasn’t feeling very sleepy today… Maybe it was because he had slept enough yesterday?

But he hadn’t shed any fur today, which was a good thing. Su Muluo got up and walked towards the bedroom.

Long Ling followed him inside.

And then was pushed out.

Long Ling: “?”

“Wait a moment,” Su Muluo said with a stern face, “I’m getting the bedding. Go sleep on the sofa.”

He initially wanted Long Ling to sleep on the sofa, but considering he didn’t have pajamas, he might catch a cold, so he decided to sacrifice himself.

Once they bought clothes tomorrow, he would make this dragon sleep on the sofa!

Long Ling paused for a second and then asked, “Does the phoenix not want to sleep with me?”

Su Muluo: “I’m not sleeping with you. How old are you?”

“But we’re partners,” Long Ling suddenly grabbed Su Muluo’s hand, looking unhappy, “We used to sleep together.”

Su Muluo gently removed his hand and said in a very gentle tone, “That was because you were small before. Now that you’ve grown up, you need to sleep alone.”

Long Ling: “??? But I—”

“No whining!” Su Muluo said, “Otherwise, I’ll hang you on the door handle!”

Long Ling: “……”

Long Ling looked at his phoenix in silence, his gaze filled with deep resentment.

Su Muluo ignored him, cruelly taking a blanket and walking out the door—

But just as he was about to leave the bedroom, Long Ling grabbed the corner of his shirt and said, “Fine, let me sleep on the sofa.”

Su Muluo said, “No, you don’t have any pajamas.”

Long Ling said, “I’m a dragon; I’m not afraid of the cold.”

This was actually true; he wasn’t afraid of the cold. Plus, his phoenix was delicate and beautiful, so he was reluctant to make the phoenix sleep on the sofa.

But Su Muluo didn’t want Long Ling to sleep on the sofa without pajamas. The two of them debated at the door, and finally, Long Ling said, “If the phoenix doesn’t let me sleep on the sofa, I’ll carry the phoenix to bed and do this and that,” and then was driven out of the bedroom by the enraged phoenix.

With the room light turned off, Su Muluo lay in bed, and for some reason, he suddenly found it hard to fall asleep.

Usually, at this time, a little dragon would be snuggled up next to him, and they would fall asleep together… And even further back, when they were in the mountains, he and the dragon egg used to sleep close together.

Now, his dragon was still by his side, but separated by a wall and a room, no longer snuggled together.

“……”

Su Muluo suddenly realized that this was the first time in eighteen hundred years since his hatching that he was going to sleep alone.

For a moment, he wanted to call Long Ling in and sleep together like they used to. But thinking of those dark golden eyes and that man’s face… he hesitated.

Time silently passed, and the phoenix turned over a few times in bed, still unable to fall asleep.

The first half of the night seemed to drag on forever, but by the later part of the night, for some reason, a wave of drowsiness surged up suddenly, just like yesterday.

Su Muluo felt his vision blur, his eyelids too heavy to lift. He sank into the soft blankets and quickly fell asleep.

But his sleep wasn’t restful; he felt as though he was lying on searing flames. Although he wasn’t being burned, he was drenched in sweat and couldn’t seem to escape the discomfort.

The distressing sensation continued for a long time until he heard a deep, worried voice calling him—it was Long Ling waking him up.

“Phoenix, Phoenix?” Long Ling held Su Muluo’s hand, looking concerned, “What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell? I’m here, look at me.”

“……”

The familiar scent enveloped him. Su Muluo struggled to open his eyes, sweat soaking his soft black hair. His breathing was slightly rapid, and his beautiful ink-black eyes looked somewhat dazed.

Long Ling’s gaze faltered for a moment, a thought flashing through his mind. In an instant, it seemed like all of the phoenix’s unusual behavior lately was explained.

“Phoenix.”

Long Ling raised his hand, his long, slender fingers gently brushing over Su Muluo’s face. His voice was soft and slow, as if afraid of startling the phoenix, but with a hint of vague anticipation.

“Are you… in heat?”
