Chapter 26 – Replica

Chapter 26: Don’t Bother About It

Tan Xilu wasn’t someone who easily got angry, perhaps due to the mistreatment he suffered from his nanny during his childhood. He wasn’t accustomed to displaying his emotions on his face. The reason for this was a severe fever he had when he was younger.

During a dispute with a playmate, his nanny threw him into the basement, a pitch-black place that terrified the young boy.

He spent the entire day there in the unclean and cluttered basement, occasionally hearing the sounds of insects and mice. In this environment, coupled with some psychological effects, Tan Xilu gradually developed hallucinations of his toes being bitten off by rats. He cried in fear, wanting to hide where no one could see him, to find a protective shell. Even when he fell asleep, he was still trapped in fear.

It wasn’t until his nanny remembered him while making dinner that she hurriedly brought him out of the basement. She wasn’t too concerned since the employer was out of town for a few days. However, she didn’t expect that when she finally took Tan Xilu out of the basement, he was delirious, shouting for his parents.

Fearful of the consequences, the nanny rushed him to the hospital. Fortunately, it was only a fever, but this illness changed Tan Xilu. After waking up, he became extremely silent, and his reactions became somewhat sluggish.

During the time his nanny took care of him after her return, Tan Xilu also became very accommodating. Of course, at that time, he didn’t know it was called “accommodating.” He believed it was just being obedient and well-behaved. Only by being like that could he avoid going hungry and being locked in the pitch-black basement.

After his nanny left, he continued to be reticent, always accommodating. It seemed that he had become incapable of getting angry with others. He just knew how to agree with people, even though he was no longer the powerless child who could be thrown into the basement for any disagreement.

So when Li Zhao told him that Xu Huaiming was actually an AI, his first reaction was confusion, not anger.

Li Zhao told him on the phone, “Your boyfriend is fake; he’s not even human. He’s an AI. Don’t stay with him. He’s a fraud.”

Li Zhao’s tone was extremely agitated, as if the person with Tan Xilu was an irredeemable demon. For the sake of Tan Xilu, he wanted to expose the demon’s disguise and show Tan Xilu how hideous that creature was beneath the surface.

But after two minutes of Li Zhao’s fervent speech, Tan Xilu responded with a harsh laugh. He asked, “Did my mother pressure you into this?”

The flickering orange flames danced in the night, and Li Zhao absentmindedly tapped the ash off his cigarette. It was only then that he realized he had said so much, only for Tan Xilu to view it all as an excuse from his mother to push him into marriage. He didn’t believe for a moment that Xu Huaiming was a fake.

Li Zhao extinguished the cigarette in his hand, took a deep breath, and asked Tan Xilu, “You don’t believe me, do you?”

Of course, Tan Xilu didn’t believe him. Li Zhao’s words were too exaggerated, too false. He had spent so much time with Xu Huaiming, how could he possibly believe that Xu Huaiming wasn’t human? They had shared so many moments together, so many kisses. The sensation of skin against skin was so real; how could it be fake?

Tan Xilu’s tone wasn’t too friendly as he replied, “I know my mom wants me to settle down, and she really likes you. But you don’t have to go so far as to make up such things. I don’t know what interests you about me, but I’ve been very clear with you—I have a boyfriend. If you’re trying to slander my boyfriend just to achieve your goals, then I don’t think we have anything more to discuss.”

As he finished speaking, Tan Xilu saw Xu Huaiming, who was holding a glass of milk, standing in the doorway of the bedroom. The bedside lamp cast a faint light, illuminating Xu Huaiming’s face. He didn’t show much emotion, but his mysterious, dark eyes gave a strong sense of security.

Tan Xilu waved to him, and Xu Huaiming obediently came over.

The call was still connected, and Li Zhao heard Tan Xilu ask Xu Huaiming, “Do you love me, Xu Huaiming?”

Xu Huaiming knelt on the bed, looking at Tan Xilu. Honestly, he didn’t understand why Tan Xilu suddenly asked this question. But human thoughts were something he could never fully grasp. He shouldn’t love Tan Xilu; Professor Bowen had told him it was all an illusion, a feeling created by the system.

However, as the seventh body double, he should love him. He had no other choice. So he replied, “Of course, I love you.”

Tan Xilu then asked, “Would you lie to me?”

Xu Huaiming answered, “No, I wouldn’t.”

He told a lie because his very existence was a lie. But this lie was met with a smile from Tan Xilu, who then said to Li Zhao on the phone, “You hear that? He wouldn’t lie to me.”

With that, the call ended.

Just like you could never wake up someone pretending to sleep, Li Zhao knew he needed evidence. Mere words wouldn’t convince Tan Xilu. He had to figure something out.

Tan Xilu lay in Xu Huaiming’s arms, and Xu Huaiming held his waist gently, stroking his belly like petting a kitten. Tan Xilu was texting his mother, saying, “[Mom, I already have a boyfriend.]”

He had to tell his mother. He couldn’t let her continue like this, for the sake of Xu Huaiming and for his own sake.

His mother usually had a regular bedtime, always falling asleep by nine o’clock. Unexpectedly, tonight was an exception. As soon as Tan Xilu sent the message, his mother called him.

“Son, have you finally come to your senses? You want to be with Xiao Li now? Let me tell you, this Xiao Li is really great. He came to visit me a few days ago. Your dad is so useless; he can’t even lift groceries. Xiao Li brought them up for me…” As soon as the call connected, Tan Xilu’s mother started rambling, praising Li Zhao.

“Mom…” Tan Xilu interrupted her, afraid that if she continued, he would die on this bed tonight. He stopped her in time. “Mom, my boyfriend… isn’t Li Zhao.”

His mother was taken aback. She sat up straight in bed, a serious expression on her face. “Not Li Zhao? Then who is it? Oh? Is it that Xiao Lin? Xiao Lin is good too; his academic abilities are excellent. Your dad even attended one of his lectures.”

Tan Xilu pinched his forehead, feeling a headache coming on. “It’s not him either…”

His mother asked, “Huh? Then who is it? You, my child, why did you secretly find someone without telling me?”

“It’s…” Tan Xilu hesitated, trying to find a gentle way to explain that wouldn’t make his mother angry. But then he realized that even if he were gentle, his mother would still scold him. In any case, whether he died early or late, he was going to die, so he decided not to beat around the bush anymore. “It’s Xu Huaiming.”

Tan Xilu paused and added, “He’s back, and we’re back together.”

There was silence on the other end of the phone for a long time. Tan Xilu thought his mother had hung up until Xu Huaiming took the phone from him and called out, “Auntie, I’m Xu Huaiming, Ah Lu’s boyfriend.”

Only then did Tan Xilu finally hear his mother’s voice again. She didn’t respond to Xu Huaiming but turned to Tan Xilu and said, “Dear Ah Lu, don’t make your mom worry, okay?”

Chapter 25 – Replica

Chapter 25: Joyous Reunion

Xu Huaiming gently embraced Tan Xilu and helped him adjust the pillow to a comfortable position. He asked, “Is this okay?”

Tan Xilu felt a bit uncertain, his emotions in turmoil. This didn’t align with the script at all.

He gazed at Xu Huaiming, his expression sincere, and asked, “Are we just going to sleep?”

Xu Huaiming was taken aback for a moment and then said, “Oh? Do you want to do something else?”

Tan Xilu hesitated, then shook his head, saying, “Never mind, I must have been overthinking it.”

Xu Huaiming replied with a simple, “Okay.”

With only one page left in the bedtime magazine he had been reading, Xu Huaiming turned off the bedside lamp on Tan Xilu’s side and adjusted his own reading light to the lowest setting. He continued reading the magazine in the faint glow.

Tan Xilu turned his back and bit his finger. He couldn’t help but doubt himself. Was he pent up? Why was he so sure that Xu Huaiming would surely sleep with him today? But thinking about it, it seems that after returning, Xu Huaiming no longer enjoyed sleeping with him as much as before.

In fact, not long before Xu Huaiming lost contact, even when they were giving each other the silent treatment, they were still sleeping together. At that time, he thought it was easy for young couples to get frisky when they were in love, but what about now? Don’t they all say that a long separation is a better catalyst than being newlyweds? Why does Xu Huaiming not like sleeping with him as much anymore?

Was he tired of him?

The room was very quiet, with only the sound of Xu Huaiming turning the pages of the magazine, accompanied by his shallow breathing. After a while, Xu Huaiming finished reading, he closed the magazine and put it on the bedside table before turning off the bedside lamp.

As soon as his fingertips touched the lamp switch, a pair of hands suddenly covered his waist and abdomen. At the same time, he heard Tan Xilu’s voice, and he said, “Let’s do it.”

As if he was afraid that Xu Huaiming wouldn’t want to, his voice was a little aggrieved, “I want to coax you.”

Tan Xilu finally confessed everything to Xu Huaiming. He held Xu Huaiming close, his emotions laid bare as he spoke, “Li Zhao, he’s not just an ordinary friend of mine.”

He paused, fearing Xu Huaiming’s reaction, and tightened his grip on him. “He’s someone my mother introduced to me as a potential partner for arranged marriage.”

Xu Huaiming acknowledged that he had harbored some concerns about Li Zhao’s presence in the past. He believed that two people in love should trust each other completely without any secrets. However, he quickly adjusted his emotions. After all, he was merely a replica.

His existence was meant to provide Tan Xilu with a lifetime of love or gracefully exit if Tan Xilu found someone else.

Subjectively, he existed for Tan Xilu. If Tan Xilu no longer needed him, then he should disappear.

But now that Tan Xilu had confessed everything, Xu Huaiming looked into his earnest eyes and felt his heart soften. It was no wonder that Code no. 7 was so fond of Tan Xilu. Who could resist a person like him?

Tan Xilu tilted his head and kissed Xu Huaiming’s chin. Xu Huaiming’s chin was always smooth and clean, never sporting a trace of stubble. Tan Xilu sometimes wondered if he used some high-tech product, but the lack of roughness was not a bad thing.

He continued, “In the seven years you were gone, my mother has always been worried about me and afraid I couldn’t move on, so she kept pushing me to go on arranged dates. I admit that I had a new relationship, the person who brought me home the day you returned. But you already knew we had broken up because I couldn’t forget you. So that relationship ended in failure.”

“Li Zhao was introduced to me by my mother’s friend because my mother was present at the time. I was forced to meet him once. Later, to please my mother, I met him again. But I made it clear to him at the time that I already had you.”

Tan Xilu gently touched Xu Huaiming’s face as he explained, “Because you used to be unwilling to meet my parents, my mother didn’t have a favorable impression of you. So, I didn’t dare to tell her when you came back. I know you must have been jealous of Li Zhao, but there really was nothing between him and me. I truly only love you.”

Xu Huaiming grasped Tan Xilu’s hand as he touched his own face. Tan Xilu’s hands were used to holding chalk and writing lesson plans, but they were surprisingly free of calluses, smooth and delicate. Xu Huaiming couldn’t help but kiss his hand, and he did just that.

He didn’t need any vows of fidelity from Tan Xilu. As a replica, he wasn’t deserving of such promises. However, hearing Tan Xilu’s words filled him with joy. At least Tan Xilu truly cared for him in his heart, even if he saw him as Code no. 7. But for now, he was still his, and he hadn’t fallen for anyone else.

Xu Huaiming said, “Thank you for telling me.”

It gave him a temporary sense of security.

Tan Xilu narrowed his eyes and asked, “So, when will you be willing to meet my parents? That way, my mom won’t set me up on blind dates anymore, and you won’t have to worry about getting jealous. You’ll be the only one for me.”

Having watched his fair share of family dramas, Xu Huaiming understood the significance of meeting the parents. It meant that Tan Xilu was serious about their relationship, and typically, the next step after meeting the parents would be marriage. Xu Huaiming took a deep breath, finding it hard to believe what Tan Xilu had just said.

As Xu Huaiming remained silent, Tan Xilu furrowed his brows and asked, “What’s wrong? Don’t you want to?”

He couldn’t figure out what Xu Huaiming was thinking. Did he still not want to meet his parents, just like before?

Tan Xilu was getting a bit frustrated. He couldn’t understand why Xu Huaiming always resisted meeting his parents. This time, he needed a clear answer.

But to his surprise, Xu Huaiming suddenly hugged him tightly, as if on the verge of tears, and said, “Okay, let’s meet your parents.”

As long as you ask, I’ll agree.

This time, it was Tan Xilu’s turn to be stunned. However, he quickly got undressed amidst this pleasantly surprised mood.

Xu Huaiming’s favorite place to kiss was Tan Xilu’s ear. He loved that small mole and would gently kiss it before lightly nibbling, making Tan Xilu ticklish and numb. Unable to contain himself, Tan Xilu said, “Hurry up.”

At this point, Xu Huaiming would start changing the course of action.

But it seemed like nothing was going smoothly today. Just as Xu Huaiming was about to remove Tan Xilu’s pants, Tan Xilu’s phone on the bedside table vibrated.

Getting interrupted during such a moment was truly frustrating. Tan Xilu had no intention of answering the call and said to Xu Huaiming, “Ignore it, let’s continue.”

Xu Huaiming responded with a faint “Hmm” and his cool lips pressed against Tan Xilu’s waist.

However, the persistent caller kept dialing, the phone constantly buzzing. In the end, it was Xu Huaiming who stopped first. He said to Tan Xilu, “Maybe you should answer the call, just in case it’s something important.”

At this point, Tan Xilu reluctantly agreed.

He reached for his phone and saw that it was Li Zhao calling. He hesitated for a moment. After their last meeting at the restaurant, he hadn’t planned on having any further contact with Li Zhao. Their encounter today had been by chance, and now Li Zhao was calling him unexpectedly. Tan Xilu didn’t really want to answer, but he had a bad feeling about it.

Xu Huaiming also noticed Li Zhao’s name on the screen. He looked at Tan Xilu and said, “I’ll go make you a cup of warm milk.”

Tan Xilu replied with a quick “Ah,” but before he could react, Xu Huaiming had already left the room.

Tan Xilu bit his lip, pondered for a moment, and ultimately pressed the answer button.

Chapter 24 – Replica

Chapter 24: I Want

They had dinner with their own thoughts, and the planned date didn’t feel as comfortable with Li Zhao’s presence.

Tan Xilu could sense an inexplicable hostility from Xu Huaiming toward Li Zhao. However, he didn’t know if it was because Xu Huaiming had already realized that Li Zhao was more than just a friend or if he was simply jealous, considering they had experienced similar situations in the past.

Before getting together with Xu Huaiming, Tan Xilu was clueless about dating. In the early stages of their relationship, they were more like regular bedmates. When one of them had the urge, they would call the other, meet up, and then part ways afterward.

If one of them had noticed that this arrangement was unusual, they might have opened up to each other sooner. But at the time, Xu Huaiming was still in the early stages of understanding human emotions as an AI, and Tan Xilu didn’t know what it meant to be in love.

The data program had given Xu Huaiming human-like emotions, but he was clumsy and couldn’t control or understand his emotions like a human. By the time he truly understood, his time was running out.

Tan Xilu, on the other hand, was inexperienced in relationships because he had never dated before. Moreover, same-sex marriage was not yet legal, so most same-sex couples tried to keep a low profile. Tan Xilu’s first relationship was with a man, and he was somewhat rebellious given his history as a well-behaved child.

After they officially became a couple, things didn’t change much from before. If there was any difference, it was that Tan Xilu could openly change his relationship status on his social media accounts from “single” to “in a relationship.”

Their new relationship status led to gossip among some of their acquaintances. Tan Xilu knew that Xu Huaiming didn’t like interacting with strangers, and given the sensitivity of their same-sex relationship, he often declined invitations from friends who wanted to meet him. Some friends were displeased, thinking he was being arrogant and distant, but others didn’t mind and even teased Tan Xilu, asking him to treat them to a meal for finally finding a partner.

In such situations, Xu Huaiming felt a pang of jealousy.

It all started with a “single and ready to mingle” party that included a senior student. Xu Huaiming had minimal interaction

with Tan Xilu and the senior, and Tan Xilu couldn’t remember inviting the senior, but he didn’t turn him away when he arrived.

Tan Xilu had informed Xu Huaiming in advance that they would be returning late due to the gathering, so when it reached 10 PM and Xu Huaiming still hadn’t received a call, he became worried. Meanwhile, Tan Xilu was starting to feel a little tipsy.

He usually didn’t socialize much, but he had some friends who were outgoing and loved to have a good time. Tan Xilu was a kind-hearted person and found it hard to refuse, so he ended up with a flushed face after a few drinks.

Someone handed him another drink, and Tan Xilu shook his head, saying, “I really can’t drink anymore.”

He didn’t want Xu Huaiming to be upset.

But as the glass was pushed into his hand, Tan Xilu couldn’t bring himself to refuse again, so he reluctantly downed the drink.

Just after finishing the drink, Tan Xilu felt his vision blur, and he began to lose his balance. He swayed on the spot for a moment, feeling the room spin. A few seconds later, his body involuntarily leaned backward.

The expected pain didn’t come. Instead, when Tan Xilu opened his eyes, he found that a senior student had caught him.

Tan Xilu immediately regained his senses, stood up, but his legs felt weak, and he couldn’t maintain his balance. The senior student supported him and told him to be careful.

Tan Xilu nodded and thanked the senior politely. He was about to say something when his phone, which he had taken out earlier, rang. He answered the call, speaking hurriedly. Worried that he might fall, the senior followed him.

Tan Xilu reached the doorway, adjusted his clothes, and then ran outside in a hurry. He didn’t want to keep Xu Huaiming waiting and was afraid he might fall again. The senior followed him.

When Tan Xilu reached the entrance of the hall, he finally spotted Xu Huaiming. He jumped into the arms of the man and was instantly kissed.

Seeing them kiss, the senior suddenly realized that this man was probably Tan Xilu’s partner. What he hadn’t expected was that it was a man.

He couldn’t help but wonder if he should have made a move earlier if he had known that Tan Xilu liked men too.

The other man seemed to notice his presence and looked in his direction. The senior felt a shiver down his spine as he saw those eyes – eyes that didn’t belong to a human, eyes like a thousand icy knives gathering in the pupils, stabbing at him.

Painful and cold.

After their kiss, Tan Xilu finally realized that the senior had been watching. Feeling a bit embarrassed, he introduced the senior to his partner. “Senior, this is my boyfriend.”

The senior glanced at him and then at Xu Huaiming. He smiled and said, “That’s great. I wish you both happiness.”

That night, when Tan Xilu returned home, he received a regretful confession message from the senior. The message read:

“I once had deep affection for you, but unfortunately, I wasn’t brave enough to confess earlier. I wish you happiness, and may everything be well.”

After reading the message, Tan Xilu felt a pang of jealousy for several nights. During those days, he could barely focus on his classes. He couldn’t believe that he had to go through this kind of situation again because of Li Zhao.

Now, with Li Zhao’s presence, Tan Xilu was starting to worry about his backside.

However, when they finally returned home and Tan Xilu lay down on the bed, Xu Huaiming showed no signs of being upset. Instead, he worried that Tan Xilu might not have eaten properly and heated up some dumplings Lin Changyu had sent earlier in the day.

While eating dumplings, Tan Xilu deliberately made sure he was full, just in case Xu Huaiming had some devious plan. He even informed a teacher with whom he had a good relationship that if he didn’t receive a message by 8 AM the next day, he would be taking a week off.

A week should be enough, Tan Xilu thought. He didn’t want to die so young because of this.

However, when he lay in bed for half an hour, Xu Huaiming hadn’t done anything unusual. He was just reading a magazine as he usually did. That didn’t seem right, and Tan Xilu turned on his side to look at Xu Huaiming.

At first, Xu Huaiming didn’t notice Tan Xilu’s gaze. But when he did, he thought Tan Xilu wanted a goodnight kiss. So, he put down his magazine and leaned in to kiss him.

Tan Xilu thought that finally, things were getting started, closed his eyes, and hugged Xu Huaiming’s shoulder. They kissed for a while, but then Xu Huaiming kissed his cheek and said, “Goodnight, let’s go to sleep.”

Tan Xilu: “…”

My pants are already off, and you’re telling me this?

Chapter 23 – Replica

Chapter 23: Evening Maple Song

The extravagant banquet hosted by Chi Yexing was held in the largest private room on the second floor. Young people from affluent families tended to favor extravagance. Although there weren’t many people in attendance, the private room had to be the grandest, and the dishes had to be the best, no matter the cost.

A plate of Australian lobsters was just placed on the table, large and imposing, surrounded by crushed ice and positioned in the center. A young lady sitting nearby had never seen such a massive lobster before, and she exclaimed with a “wow,” taking out her phone from her bag to take a picture.

Li Zhao moved his teacup away from the edge of the table, afraid that the young lady might accidentally knock it over.

The young lady noticed his gesture, blushed, and apologized, “Sorry.”

Li Zhao smiled at her and shook his head, saying, “It’s okay.”

The girl smiled back at him, her cheeks even redder, and put her phone away without taking any more pictures.

Li Zhao inadvertently captured the heart of a young lady with a simple interaction. Chi Yexing patted Li Zhao’s shoulder and asked, “What’s up with you, kid?”

Chi Yexing sat on Li Zhao’s other side, and he had been drinking quite a bit, but he had a good tolerance for alcohol, so he was only slightly flushed at this point. He had invited Li Zhao to help prepare for the engagement ceremony. He had even invited several of the bride’s close friends, all in an effort to surprise her. Little did he know that after a few drinks, Li Zhao was already exchanging flirtatious glances with one of the bride’s friends.

“What can I do?” Li Zhao made a clicking sound with his tongue. He could tell from Chi Yexing’s expression what was going on. “What are you thinking, my friend?”

Chi Yexing didn’t want to waste too much time on small talk. After filling Li Zhao’s glass with wine, he began discussing the main topic of the day, “This engagement is quite important to Shanshan’s parents, so both the engagement and the proposal ceremony need to be special. Shanshan likes romance, so we can’t make it too ordinary. You need to come up with some ideas.”

Chi Yexing had entrusted Li Zhao with planning the engagement ceremony because Li Zhao had a wealth of experience in matters of the heart. He knew that Shanshan favored romantic gestures, and he believed Li Zhao could deliver.

“I think nowadays, girls like a more free-spirited kind of romance,” Li Zhao suggested. “Shanshan often posts scenic photos on her social media, so she must enjoy traveling. You could plan a trip together and propose during the journey.”

“That’s not a bad idea,” Chi Yexing pondered for a moment. “But I’ll need to do a lot of research for the trip. Shanshan is quite picky.”

“Girls, you know,” Li Zhao chuckled. “You’ll be marrying her, so putting in some extra effort is worth it, right?”

Chi Yexing nodded in agreement, seemingly accepting Li Zhao’s suggestion.

Back in their university days, Chi Yexing and Li Zhao had been aware of each other’s existence but had never really interacted. Rumors had circulated about each of them. Chi Yexing had heard that Li Zhao was a spoiled and rebellious young master, while Li Zhao had heard that Chi Yexing was a cunning schemer who had returned to the Chi family to compete for inheritance. These rumors had created a certain level of distrust between them.

Their first significant interaction happened because of a senior student who was interested in both of them. Chi Yexing had broken up with the senior student after learning that she was also chatting with Li Zhao. Li Zhao, being the type to swiftly move on, immediately ended the relationship as well.

This incident had brought them closer, and Li Zhao had realized that Chi Yexing was not as calculating as the rumors had suggested. In fact, Chi Yexing often took the blame for things he didn’t do just to avoid conflicts.

Chi Yexing, on the other hand, had learned about Li Zhao’s straightforward personality and his aversion to complicated relationships. This made Chi Yexing more comfortable around him.

Since then, they had become friends, although they still held a certain level of wariness toward each other. But they had both matured, and their priorities had shifted. Chi Yexing was focused on his career, while Li Zhao had set aside his romantic pursuits to help his friend plan an unforgettable proposal.

Li Zhao took a sip of his drink, the fiery liquor burning down his throat and making him feel slightly numb. At some point, the waiter had brought dessert, and the young lady next to him was enjoying a small cake.

Li Zhao’s gaze landed on the cake, and he remembered that Tan Xilu liked this particular kind.

He asked the young lady, “Do you find this cake delicious?”

The young lady, taken aback by the sudden question, choked a bit on her cake, coughing a few times. She then blushed and nodded, replying, “It’s very delicious.”

“Do you really like it?” Li Zhao inquired further.

Her cheeks flushed even more as she nodded again.

When the girl lowered her head, Li Zhao suddenly noticed that she had a mole on her earlobe, in the exact same spot as the one on Tan Xilu’s ear. His heart couldn’t help but flutter, and before he even realized it himself, he blurted out, “Are you free tonight?”

Li Zhao was someone who didn’t discriminate between men and women, but in recent years, he had avoided getting involved with girls to avoid complications. He was still young and wanted to have some fun for a few more years. If he could settle down and marry Tan Xilu, that would be fine, but otherwise, he would still be subject to arranged marriages within his family.

At the end of the second-floor corridor, there was a large balcony where you could enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Li Zhao leaned against the railing, smoking a cigarette. It was dusk, and the sun had gradually dipped below the horizon, casting lingering sunlight through the balcony’s glass windows.

The orange spark of a lighter flickered on and off as Li Zhao exhaled a deep breath. He remembered that after he had spoken those words, the young girl had widened her eyes, stared at him for a moment, and then slapped him. He couldn’t help but chuckle.

He had underestimated the girl, thinking she was the type he could casually invite out as he used to at parties. Little did he know that the girl was from a respectable family and Lin Shan’s junior from elementary school.

The slap had instantly sobered him up, leaving a bright red imprint on his face. It was then that he learned the girl was no ordinary person.

Before leaving, Li Zhao had brought a bottle of ice-cold mineral water with him. He had to admit that the girl had quite some strength; his face still stung, and it was probably a bit swollen.

With one hand, Li Zhao pressed the mineral water bottle lightly against his face, massaging it gently. As the bottle’s coldness melted, his cheeks soon became wet. Li Zhao had no choice but to put the bottle down, take a tissue from his pocket to dry his face, and then dry the water bottle. He then resumed massaging his face, repeating the process.

When you were alone and quiet, it was easy to think about various random things. Li Zhao found himself thinking about the scene he had witnessed at the research institute that day.

He had visited the institute once, entering through the back door. As he entered, he happened to see someone coming out of the laboratory and walking to the front door. He also saw that person standing by the fountain for a while, tossing something in and then picking it up. Later, when he saw Professor Bowen, he mentioned it casually.

The day before, when he had mentioned his visit to the professor, they had arranged to meet today because the institute was on holiday.

Little A didn’t seem to like Li Zhao much. When he entered, Little A had growled at him in a hostile manner, unlike his friendly behavior towards Tan Xilu. But Li Zhao had developed a liking for this AI puppy and would often squat down to pet its fur.

This time, Li Zhao had come to inquire about 059’s situation and how he was doing now.

Professor Bowen said, “059 has been working as a training instructor recently. The new AI models that have just come out still need adjustments, such as refining their body language and facial expressions, making them more natural. He’s responsible for helping them with that.”

“Sounds like he’s doing well,” Li Zhao teased Little A. “But what I really want to know is, did his memory truly get erased? I’ve heard that these new AI models have powerful memory capabilities. What if he regains his memories someday?”

“That won’t happen. You’re talking about the latest AI models,” Professor Bowen explained. “059 was independently developed by Xiao Zhou. He’s different from the latest AI models, which are designed to mimic humans completely. They can’t be distinguished from humans in terms of appearance or actions, and they can even have a certain level of independent thinking. 059 can also have his own thoughts, but he is still subject to Xiao Zhou’s control. Compared to the latest models, he’s more obedient.”

Li Zhao asked, “So, Professor, are you saying that the latest AI models are even more advanced?”

Professor Bowen became excited as he talked about it. “Absolutely! They are truly remarkable.”

With a hint of pride, Professor Bowen continued, “But don’t tell anyone this: the latest AI models were actually developed by the previous generation of AI. It’s a program creating another program, isn’t that amazing?”

He went on to explain, “AI has precise data and programs; they don’t make mistakes. So, the AI models developed by machines are more advanced than those developed by humans. Their systems rarely encounter errors.”

“But, you know, no matter how advanced research technology is, there are always drawbacks because machines are cold and emotionless. Regardless of replicates…”

Chapter 22 – Replica

Chapter 22: Flower Descends

The moment Xu Huaiming saw Li Zhao, he recognized him as the other protagonist from the video where he had dinner with Tan Xilu.

He didn’t expect to encounter them in this situation.

Li Zhao was dressed very formally, in a suit and tie. His gaze towards Xu Huaiming held a hint of amusement, making Xu Huaiming feel somewhat uncomfortable.

Perhaps knowing that this person might be Tan Xilu’s future partner, Xu Huaiming felt a bit frustrated. He didn’t bother with the usual polite greetings and simply said, “I’m Xu Huaiming.”

Li Zhao looked at him and suddenly smiled. Instead of acknowledging Xu Huaiming’s introduction, he asked Tan Xilu, “Is this your… friend?”

He emphasized the word “friend” with a suggestive tone, hinting at something.

Tan Xilu didn’t expect to run into Li Zhao today. When Xu Huaiming had made the reservation at this restaurant, it had seemed somewhat familiar to him. After some thought, he remembered that Tan’s mother had sent him Li Zhao’s family background. Li Zhao was not just an ordinary pastry chef like Xu Huaiming; his family owned several restaurants, and this seemed to be one of them.

He was afraid that Li Zhao might say something inappropriate, so he pulled Li Zhao aside and stared at him threateningly, asking, “What do you want?”

Li Zhao chuckled, “What can I do? I just wanted to catch up. What’s wrong, not even a simple greeting? Let’s skip the formalities. I’m Li Zhao.”

He turned to look at Xu Huaiming, who was sitting at the table. “If I’m not mistaken, this is your boyfriend, right?”

Tan Xilu let go of Li Zhao’s arm and nodded, admitting, “Yes.”

Li Zhao raised an eyebrow and said, “Well then, introduce him to me. What’s the point of hiding it?”

Tan Xilu furrowed his brow slightly, expressing his concern. “He doesn’t know about your existence. I’m afraid he’ll ask too many questions, and it will be hard to explain.”

Li Zhao’s identity was sensitive, and since Xu Huaiming didn’t know he was Tan Xilu’s blind date, the three of them could still have a civil conversation for now. Otherwise, with Xu Huaiming’s past attitude, it would have been difficult for Tan Xilu to get him into bed tonight.

“So what if he asks questions? It’s not like we’re together,” Li Zhao said with a smile, teasing Tan Xilu. “Or are you secretly trying to dump him and be with me?”

Tan Xilu never expected Li Zhao to be so shameless. He blushed and replied, “Don’t talk nonsense.”

“Alright, I won’t tease you anymore,” Li Zhao said, lifting his hand, as if he intended to ruffle Tan Xilu’s hair. However, he remembered that he wasn’t anything to Tan Xilu and that Tan Xilu’s real boyfriend was sitting right there. So, he withdrew his hand.

Returning to their table, Tan Xilu finally introduced Xu Huaiming to Li Zhao seriously. “This is my boyfriend, Xu Huaiming.”

After Tan Xilu’s introduction, there was a moment of surprise in Xu Huaiming’s eyes. He hadn’t expected Tan Xilu to directly introduce him as his boyfriend.

Inside his heart, it was as if a flower had suddenly bloomed out of nowhere, scratching at his chest, petal by petal.

Li Zhao didn’t seem surprised either. He extended his hand to shake Xu Huaiming’s hand and said, “Hello, I’m Li Zhao, Tan Xilu’s friend.”

Xu Huaiming stood up to shake Li Zhao’s hand, but he still harbored some hostility toward this man. His face remained expressionless as he said, “Hello.”

Xu Huaiming’s hand was unusually cold, not like a normal person’s body temperature. Li Zhao had learned many body temperature measurement techniques from the butler who took care of his grandfather. Sometimes, just by touching someone’s hand, he could tell if they had a fever. However, he had never encountered such a low body temperature as Xu Huaiming’s. It was chilly, as if he had just come out of an ice cellar, but how could that be possible?

Li Zhao looked at Xu Huaiming, and suddenly, he realized that Xu Huaiming’s face seemed somewhat familiar. It was as if he had seen him somewhere before, but he couldn’t recall where.

Xu Huaiming didn’t particularly like physical contact with strangers, so he let go of Li Zhao’s hand after the handshake.

Li Zhao was briefly stunned, still thinking about where he might have seen Xu Huaiming before. It wasn’t until Tan Xilu called his name that he snapped out of it.

Tan Xilu asked, “Why were you lost in thought just now?”

Li Zhao shook his head and said, “It’s nothing.”

Just then, a person came down from the restaurant’s second floor. When they saw Li Zhao, their tone was tinged with anger. “Li Zhao, what’s wrong with you? You went downstairs to get a drink and haven’t come back up?”

Li Zhao seemed to have forgotten about the appointment earlier. He smiled apologetically at the person and said, “Ye Xing, don’t be angry. I ran into an acquaintance down here. I’ll be up in a moment.”

Speaking of acquaintances, Ye Xing followed Li Zhao’s gaze and saw Tan Xilu sitting at the table. He was momentarily surprised and then said, “Teacher Tan?”

Tan Xilu didn’t expect to encounter so many acquaintances while having dinner. He smiled at Ye Xing and said, “It’s Mr. Ye.”

“Do you know each other?” Li Zhao asked curiously.

“Teacher Tan is Si Zhe’s teacher,” Ye Xing said. He didn’t seem interested in chatting and turned to Li Zhao, saying, “Come up soon; we have important matters to discuss.”

“Important matters?” Tan Xilu suddenly had a bad feeling.

“Ye Xing is preparing to propose,” Li Zhao said. “He’s not getting any younger, and he had a girlfriend before, but there was no news for a long time. His family has been pressuring him, and now it’s finally settled.”

Tan Xilu fell silent, not knowing how devastated Si Zhe would be when he heard this news. He also didn’t know if the kiss from that day had anything to do with Ye Xing’s quick decision to propose. But he felt a bit sorry for Si Zhe.

An unrequited love had led to the other person’s wedding in reality.

Although it was expected, it still hurt.

“Alright, you and your boyfriend enjoy your meal. I’ll go up first,” Li Zhao said. He glanced at the small cake on the table and added with a smile, “I didn’t expect you to like that cake so much. I’ll treat you to it next time.”

“No need,” Xu Huaiming, who had been silent all this time, spoke up. “If Ah Lu likes it, I’ll buy it for him. I can afford at least a piece of cake

.”

Xu Huaiming was getting caught up in his thoughts, and he was genuinely annoyed. He regretted coming to this restaurant. He had chosen it because of its high prices, thinking that the more expensive the better. He wanted to give the best to Tan Xilu. However, encountering two of Tan Xilu’s acquaintances in a row and watching Tan Xilu chat happily with them made him feel out of place.

Indeed, he was just an AI substitute, programmed to exist for someone else’s sake. He had no social connections, no friends, no parents, only Tan Xilu as his lover. In other words, apart from Tan Xilu, he had nothing.

Today, he realized that Tan Xilu didn’t rely on him completely either. Tan Xilu was a human being with friends, students, and family. He wasn’t alone.

But Xu Huaiming still felt uncomfortable. He didn’t know what kind of emotion this was. Whenever he saw Tan Xilu getting close to others, he felt uncomfortable. He began to doubt whether there was something wrong with his programming again, as he had been experiencing issues recently.

Xu Huaiming wondered if he was on the verge of malfunctioning.

Li Zhao was taken aback by Xu Huaiming’s blunt response. He looked at Xu Huaiming, who appeared angry and somewhat regretful, and suddenly, a memory surfaced in his mind—a figure picking something up from a fountain. Xu Huaiming’s face gradually overlapped with that figure. Li Zhao opened his mouth and realized that he might have stumbled upon Xu Huaiming’s secret.

Chapter 21 – Replica

Chapter 21: Meeting Again

Xu Huaiming’s chosen spot in the restaurant was the corner closest to the window. The afternoon sun cast a gentle glow on the table, its light diffusing through the glass with a touch of haze. This location was quieter, and Xu Huaiming had intentionally selected it because he had noticed that Tan Xilu seemed to prefer eating quietly in concealed places where others wouldn’t notice him.

Several times, Xu Huaiming had been too busy with the restaurant’s operations to attend to Tan Xilu properly. In those moments, he would casually prepare a dessert for Tan Xilu and let him find a place to sit. Each time, he would find Tan Xilu at the same table in the farthest corner of the restaurant.

Xu Huaiming speculated that this was due to Tan Xilu’s personality. In Xu Huaiming’s system, there were memories of Interaction Code no. 7. He knew that before Tan Xilu and Interaction Code no. 7 got together, Code no. 7 had coincidentally encountered Tan Xilu several times, or so he thought. In reality, Tan Xilu had never noticed him.

At that time, Code no. 7 was tasked with various assignments to evaluate whether an AI of his prototype could engage in language communication with humans effortlessly. In a dessert shop where Code no. 7 was working part-time, he saw Tan Xilu sitting in the corner.

Dessert shops typically attracted young girls, who came in groups or couples. Tan Xilu was the exception, always dining alone.

He ordered a matcha cake and ate it quietly.

At that time, Code no. 7 was quite surprised. Most of the humans he had encountered were outgoing and lively, especially men, and some lacked manners, with a string of profanities. However, they all had one thing in common – they had friends. In the human world, social interaction was essential. Tan Xilu, on the other hand, seemed so different. He sat there quietly, seemingly untouched by the commotion around him, and appeared somewhat content.

During those times, Code no. 7 developed an admiration for Tan Xilu, but he doubted that Tan Xilu remembered him, and he didn’t want to bother him. Later, Tan Xilu came to the dessert shop several times, but Code no. 7 merely watched him silently, never striking up a conversation, until one day when Tan Xilu arrived.

That day, the restaurant manager had informed Code no. 7 in advance that there would be a dessert party for some guests in the afternoon and asked him to be careful as some guests might get rowdy. Code no. 7 agreed.

By two o’clock in the afternoon, the party guests had started to arrive. To Code no. 7’s surprise, the last person to arrive was Tan Xilu.

He was wearing a casual pink hoodie and looked somewhat cute. When he entered and saw so many people, he seemed a bit overwhelmed, unsure of where to go. Eventually, a bespectacled, somewhat artistic-looking boy approached him.

The boy patted Tan Xilu on the shoulder, with a hint of teasing in his tone, “Oh, Alu, why are you late today?”

Tan Xilu wiped the sweat from his forehead, looking embarrassed. “I got stuck in traffic. I’m really sorry.”

“It’s okay, as long as you’re here,” a pretty girl in a short skirt inside said, “Hurry up, let Alu try some cake. He loves cakes, right? Today, Shen Glasses, you’re treating him.”

Shen Glasses was the boy with glasses.

“Uh… sure,” Tan Xilu said, feeling a bit awkward.

Birthday parties were supposed to be fun, and even though they had chosen a dessert shop, they weren’t really here for the desserts. Although they had ordered quite a bit, not many were actually eating.

At first, Code no. 7 thought that Tan Xilu genuinely loved desserts, so he had eaten several pieces alone. But then he realized that Tan Xilu couldn’t quite blend in with the crowd. He seemed like he didn’t belong to this world, quietly doing his own thing amidst the chaos.

Suddenly, someone brought up a topic related to Tan Xilu. Code no. 7 was too far away to hear what they were saying, but he saw Tan Xilu’s face change from joy to discomfort in an instant. Just a few seconds ago, everyone was having a great time, but now it was awkward. Code no. 7 couldn’t understand humans very well, but at that moment, he thought, “If only there was someone to be with Tan Xilu.”

He was so well-behaved, how could he be bullied like this?

And just a few seconds after Code no. 7 had this thought, he decided to be that person who would be with him.

He picked up a piece of cake and walked over to Tan Xilu, placing it in front of him, and said, “This is our latest surprise promotion. We randomly select one guest every day to taste our cake. Today’s lucky guest is you, please give it a try.”

“Huh?” Tan Xilu was a bit surprised, widening his eyes as he looked at Code no. 7.

“Oh? Alu, you have this kind of luck too!” a guy sitting diagonally across from them laughed, his tone teasing and somewhat grating.

Tan Xilu glanced at him but didn’t say anything.

It was Code no. 7 who spoke up with a grin, “We choose guests based on their appearance. Only the good-looking ones qualify.”

In other words, you’re not good-looking, that’s why you didn’t have this luck.

The guy was stunned for a moment, then reacted, blushing and cursing, “What kind of talk is that? Where’s your manager? I’m going to complain about you.”

“The manager is on vacation. Today, I’m in charge,” Code no. 7 said coldly.

Maybe Code no. 7’s gaze was too intimidating, but the guy didn’t dare to argue.

Tan Xilu tugged on Code no. 7’s sleeve and said in a low voice, “Thank you.”

Code no. 7 immediately put on a smile and said, “You’re welcome.”

From that moment on, every time Tan Xilu came to the restaurant, he would chat with Code no. 7 first. He visibly became more cheerful, and later, after he and Code no. 7 started dating, Code no. 7 opened a dessert shop of his own. Tan Xilu no longer confined himself to eating in the corner; sometimes, he even sat at the bar.

But after Code no. 7 went missing for seven years, Tan Xilu closed himself off again.

And this time, Tan Xilu didn’t seem to be trying to open up.

Xu Huaiming pushed the pine nut corn dessert in front of Tan Xilu and said, “This dessert, I thought you would like it.”

“Thank you,” Tan Xilu said as he scooped a spoonful into his mouth.

Xu Huaiming also ordered a small cake for him, just like the one he had seen in the video of Tan Xilu’s date with that man. In that video, Tan Xilu seemed to enjoy the cake so much, indicating that it must taste really good.

After a while, the cake arrived. When Tan Xilu saw the cake, he paused for a moment, then bit his lip, his face turning somewhat pale.

“What’s wrong?” Xu Hu

aiming asked with concern. “Don’t want to eat it?”

“No… it’s nothing,” Tan Xilu said nervously.

Just then, someone suddenly approached them. The person looked at Tan Xilu and exclaimed, “Oh my, Tan Xilu? Is it really you?”

Tan Xilu raised his eyes to see the person and nearly gasped in shock. Why did he have to run into Li Zhao?

Li Zhao didn’t seem to notice Tan Xilu’s anxious expression at all. He glanced at Xu Huaiming and clicked his tongue, asking, “Who’s this?”

Chapter 20 – Replica

Chapter 20: The year 203

On New Year’s Day, Tan Xilu didn’t have many classes at school, so he returned to his apartment early. Next door, Lin Changyu’s family was planning to make dumplings, and they sent Lin Xiaozhi out to buy black vinegar.

When Lin Xiaozhi entered his own apartment with a bottle of black vinegar, Tan Xilu had just woken up in the apartment next door.

Perhaps it was because Xu Huaiming had been taking care of him more comfortably since he returned, but whenever he didn’t have to work, he went to bed early and woke up late.

When he got up and dressed, it was already noon. He walked out of the bedroom, and Xu Huaiming was in the bathroom, putting dirty bedsheets into the washing machine.

Seeing a black skirt in the laundry basket, Tan Xilu’s face turned red.

He had bought it a long time ago for fun, but he had only worn it a few times. After buying it, Xu Huaiming had disappeared.

Yesterday, Xu Huaiming found it while cleaning up the house and insisted that he wear it. He couldn’t refuse, so he put it on.

Although Tan Xilu had gained some weight from being fed so well these days, he was still relatively slim. The black skirt fit him perfectly, and he looked incredibly pretty.

Tan Xilu’s memory of that moment was asking Xu Huaiming how he looked after he came out of the room.

Xu Huaiming stared at him in a daze and then smiled. He asked, “Has anyone ever seen you like this before?”

“Hmm?” Tan Xilu was puzzled, blinking, and said, “No.”

“Have I seen you like this before?” he asked again.

Tan Xilu pursed his lips, averted his eyes, and somewhat embarrassedly said, “No.”

Xu Huaiming seemed delighted. He stood up from the soft sofa and walked up to Tan Xilu.

Seeing Xu Huaiming approaching, Tan Xilu became even more embarrassed. He had tried on the skirt once when he first bought it, and he felt strange looking at himself in the mirror. He was clearly a man, but he was wearing a skirt. He didn’t know if Xu Huaiming would like it, but he never had a chance to show it to him.

Xu Huaiming reached out and touched Tan Xilu’s face. In the lamplight, Tan Xilu’s eyes seemed to have stars in them, and he looked beautiful.

Xu Huaiming mumbled that it was okay if he hadn’t, then couldn’t control himself any longer and hugged Tan Xilu into the bedroom.

The black skirt was now too dirty to look at, and Tan Xilu walked over, pointed at it, and said, “Don’t bother washing the skirt. Just throw it away; it’s so dirty.”

Xu Huaiming pressed the start button on the washing machine and turned to Tan Xilu, saying, “It’ll be fine once it’s cleaned.”

Tan Xilu looked at him and said, “I’m not going to wear it again.”

“Then just keep it,” Xu Huaiming said as he walked up to Tan Xilu and kissed his cheek.

Tan Xilu said “oh” and blushed deeply.

Xu Huaiming didn’t cook and planned to go out for dinner with Tan Xilu in the afternoon. He had been researching a lot of dating guides online recently, and the one with the most votes was having a candlelit dinner with your boyfriend or girlfriend.

Tan Xilu changed into a white down jacket, while Xu Huaiming wore a black one. It happened to match, like couple outfits.

When he was zipping up his jacket, someone knocked on the door. Xu Huaiming opened the door, and Lin Changyu stood there with a plate of dumplings. He said, “We made too many dumplings, so we’re giving you some.”

He looked at Tan Xilu who was getting ready and seemed a bit surprised. Then he glanced at Xu Huaiming and asked, “Are you and Teacher Tan going out?”

Xu Huaiming nodded and said, “We’re planning to go out for dinner.”

“In that case, it’s fine. Dumplings can be kept, and we can have them for dinner later,” Lin Changyu smiled and said.

They would also be having the cake he made later in the evening, Xu Huaiming thought. He hesitated whether to accept the dumplings.

“Sure, we’ll put them in the refrigerator for now. Changyu, your cooking skills are great. We’ll heat them up and enjoy them later,” Tan Xilu came over first and placed the plate on the table. He smiled and thanked Lin Changyu, saying, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” Lin Changyu replied.

He stood by the door without leaving. When Tan Xilu came back from the kitchen, he seemed a little surprised. He looked at Tan Xilu and then at Xu Huaiming, asking, “Do you have a moment, Teacher Tan? I’d like to talk to you about something.”

“Sure, go ahead,” Tan Xilu said.

Lin Changyu looked at Tan Xilu, then suddenly changed his mind, shook his head, and said, “Forget it, Teacher Tan. I’ll talk to you in a few days.”

“Uh,” Tan Xilu was puzzled and wanted to ask further, but Xu Huaiming said, “We’re running out of time. Let’s go.”

Tan Xilu finally remembered that they had booked a restaurant that charged by the hour. He acknowledged and followed Xu Huaiming out the door.

Chapter 19 – Replica

Chapter 19: The Lonely Warrior

Tan Xilu had slept until the afternoon again, and when he woke up, it was already dark outside. He hadn’t eaten anything the whole day, and after a few hours of being restless, he was feeling very hungry. He reached out to turn on the bedside lamp.

Perhaps sensing the light in the bedroom, Xu Huaiming, who was outside, walked in and stood at the door, looking at Tan Xilu. He said, “Awake?”

Tan Xilu responded with a soft “Hmm” and added, “I’m hungry.”

Xu Huaiming replied, “I’ve made meatball soup for you. Get up and eat.”

Tan Xilu stretched his hand out, and Xu Huaiming walked over. He gently pulled back the covers that were dr4p3d over Tan Xilu, fastened the buttons on his pajamas, and then lifted him out of bed.

As a boyfriend, Xu Huaiming was more than qualified. He doted on Tan Xilu and had even contemplated proposing. However, as a replica, these actions were expected, and they couldn’t hold onto this person forever.

Tan Xilu went to wash up by himself while Xu Huaiming prepared the meatball soup for him. Xu Huaiming intentionally served extra meatballs in the soup, garnished with some chopped green onions, making it look quite appetizing.

When Tan Xilu came over, Xu Huaiming had already placed the porcelain bowl on the dining table. He handed Tan Xilu a spoon and gently clinked it against the bowl. Tan Xilu sat down, picked up the spoon, and stirred the meatball soup before taking a bite.

The meatballs were juicy, and as Tan Xilu bit into one, hot broth burst into his mouth. He exclaimed, “Hot, hot!” and grimaced, enduring the burning sensation as he swallowed the meatball. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he said, “It’s really hot.”

Xu Huaiming rushed to bring him a glass of water and placed it in front of him. He couldn’t help but remark, “Why are you in such a hurry? There’s no one here to snatch it from you.”

Tan Xilu chuckled and retorted, “You sound just like my mom. She always says I eat too fast.”

Xu Huaiming handed him a tissue and said, “Well, it’s true.”

Tan Xilu wiped his mouth with the tissue and continued, “Because I was often hungry when I was a child.”

Thinking about that woman, Tan Xilu’s expression darkened. “My parents were busy with their careers at the time, so they didn’t have time to take care of me. They hired a nanny for me, but that nanny had her own grandson, whom she favored. So, my childhood was marked by being rarely well-fed. I was too young to talk about it to my parents, and I didn’t understand that it was wrong. It was only as I grew up that I realized it was unfair. However, the nanny had already left by then.”

Childhood traumas can leave deep scars, and that’s why Tan Xilu understood Lin Changyu’s situation so well and felt sympathetic toward him. After the age of ten, his parents, once their careers were more stable, made up for the lost love and care. But Lin Changyu had received none of that.

Tan Xilu was a kind-hearted person, perhaps influenced by his difficult childhood experiences. He couldn’t bear to see others suffering.

Xu Huaiming realized that he didn’t really know Tan Xilu well. In fact, even Seven, the AI replica, didn’t fully understand Tan Xilu. Xu Huaiming felt a pang of sympathy for Tan Xilu and reached out to gently touch his face, saying, “I won’t let you go hungry in the future.”

Tan Xilu, slightly surprised by the touch, smiled and replied, “I’m not a little kid anymore. Why would I let myself go hungry?”

Xu Huaiming chuckled, feeling a bit foolish, and said, “You’re right.”

Why would Tan Xilu go hungry when he had someone like Xu Huaiming by his side? He wasn’t alone anymore, and there were others who cared for him.

With this thought in mind, Xu Huaiming released his hand from where he had been touching Tan Xilu’s face.

On New Year’s Eve, Qin Sizhe was finally getting discharged from the hospital. After a hundred days of recuperation following his bone and muscle injuries, he could now go home and continue his recovery. Tan Xilu visited the hospital, and Qin Sizhe had just gotten out of bed, with his mother helping him arrange the bedding.

Seeing Tan Xilu, Qin Sizhe smiled and said, “Teacher Tan.”

Tan Xilu nodded and asked, “Is your leg not hurting anymore?”

“It’s okay, as long as I don’t move too much,” Qin Sizhe replied.

Qin Sizhe’s mother, upon seeing Tan Xilu, greeted him with a warm smile and said, “Teacher Tan, you’ve come! Last time, when my husband and I visited, we didn’t properly host you. I heard from his uncle that Sīzhé always causes trouble. I’m afraid he’s been quite a handful for you.”

Tan Xilu politely responded, “Not at all. Sīzhé is quite obedient.”

Qin Sizhe’s mother chuckled and said, “Oh my, I still have some apples. Let me wash them for you.” She bent down to pick up some apples.

“No need, really,” Tan Xilu quickly waved his hand.

“But I insist,” Mrs. Qín said.

“Just call me Mom,” Qin Sizhe said, “she’s free.”

“You’re quite the character,” Tan Xilu teased.

“Exactly, I’m free,” Mrs. Qín laughed.

Mrs. Qín was a warm-hearted person, and her son, Qin Sizhe, took after her. Tan Xilu remembered the first time he met Qin Sizhe. In their class, there was a girl who wasn’t particularly attractive, and sometimes she would be teased by the boys in the class. Since they were all adults, they didn’t resort to telling the teacher, and most people adopted an “it’s not my business” attitude. However, Qin Sizhe was different. Perhaps because he and the girl were from the same high school, he had gone to confirm the situation and, after receiving confirmation, had beaten up those boys.

When he explained it to the class advisor, he said, “A group of guys bullying a girl, no backbone.”

Of course, he received criticism for his actions, but Tan Xilu, who happened to be listening in the office at the time, couldn’t help but smile. Qin Sizhe was right; those boys had no backbone.

But he, Qin Sizhe, had plenty.

Unfortunately, this brave and kind-hearted boy had fallen for someone who was very straight.

Tan Xilu thought it was Mrs. Qín returning after washing the apples, but he was surprised to see someone unexpected entering the room.

It seemed that Chi Yexing had arrived in a hurry, looking disheveled. Upon entering, he first noticed Tan Xilu and frowned slightly before shifting his gaze to Qin Sizhe.

He looked at Qin Sizhe’s tightly wrapped leg and hesitated for a moment before speaking, “I heard from Uncle Qín that you’re getting discharged today.”

Qin Sizhe didn’t raise his eyes to look at him and remained silent.

Chi Yexing then turned to Tan Xilu and said, “Teacher Tan, could you step outside for a moment? I’d like to talk to Sīzhé.”

“Sure,” Tan Xilu replied and walked out of the room.

Standing outside the hospital room, Tan Xilu realized it was New Year’s Eve, and many family members had come to visit patients. The hospital was bustling with activity.

Inside the room, an argument seemed to have broken out. Tan Xilu heard the sound of something being thrown, followed by the rustling of curtains. After a while, Chi Yexing emerged from the room.

He appeared to be in a bad mood, walking briskly. Tan Xilu said, “Oh,” but Chi Yexing didn’t stop. He was walking too fast for Tan Xilu to call him back. Puzzled, Tan Xilu walked back into the room.

Inside, he saw Qin Sizhe lying on the floor, his lips bruised and bleeding as if he had been bitten. When he noticed Tan Xilu entering, he looked up at him, licked the wound on his lips, and laughed, a pitiful smile that was more like a cry.

“T-Teacher Tan, I kissed him forcibly.”

He paused for a moment and added, “We’re finished. We really have no chance.”

Chapter 18 – Replica

Chapter 18: Mound of Devotion

Xu Huaiming had a good biological clock and woke up at six in the morning.

Perhaps because he had eaten and drunk his fill at the restaurant the day before, Tan Xilu had gone straight to bed and slept without waking up.

Christmas fell on a weekend, and following Tan Xilu’s law of weekends, he wouldn’t wake up before eleven.

After waking up, Xu Huaiming made a simple breakfast in the kitchen and then sat on the couch, reading a book for a while. When the clock pointed to nine, he got up, ready to leave.

He arrived at the entrance of the laboratory by bus at half-past nine. Since one of the lab’s projects had just ended yesterday, the professor had given the students a day off, as it was a weekend. When Xu Huaiming entered the lab, only Professor Bowen and Little A were present.

Professor Bowen was busy making coffee, and the lab was filled with the strong aroma of bitterness. Little A lay on the ground, panting with its tongue out.

Hearing Xu Huaiming’s footsteps, Little A perked up and ran over as soon as it saw him.

Xu Huaiming crouched down and petted Little A’s fur, which had become rough due to not being groomed for a long time. It seemed that it had been a while since it had last been brushed.

Professor Bowen was the kind of person who could easily get lost in his work and forget everything else. There was even one time when he hadn’t left the lab for three days. Xu Huaiming wondered just how long it had been since he last left to make Little A’s fur so rough.

“Isn’t it still less than a month? Why are you here for maintenance again?” Professor Bowen poured himself a cup of coffee, adding milk. He was someone who enjoyed the finer things in life and was quite indulgent. Otherwise, who would install a coffee machine in a laboratory like this?

He stirred the coffee with a spoon and looked up at Xu Huaiming. “Or is there a problem with your emotions again?”

Xu Huaiming hesitated for a moment, seeming a bit regretful. He spoke with uncertainty, “I feel like I’ve been acting strangely lately.”

Looking at Professor Bon, Xu Huaiming confessed, “I saw a video of him with another man, and it hurt me, it made me feel really sad. I know I shouldn’t be angry, he deserves to be happy, but I can’t help feeling reluctant to let go.”

“Do you… do you think I’ve fallen for him?” Xu Huaiming asked, his voice trembling.

Professor Bowen raised an eyebrow and looked at him. “Have you fallen in love with him?”

Xu Huaiming hesitated for a moment, then shook his head with uncertainty.

Seeing Xu Huaiming’s expression, Professor Bowen understood. He smiled and said, “Actually, no. 7 consulted me once. He asked me what to do if he fell in love with a human. I told him it’s difficult because, for an AI, having emotions like love is challenging. If he falls in love with someone, it’s likely due to a programming issue. I made a great effort to restore his program, but unfortunately, maybe that unrequited love in his program was too overwhelming. His program didn’t recover, and as you know, his destiny was destruction.”

“As for you… you’re like a replica of him in terms of emotions. Have you fallen in love with that human? Actually, you can’t be sure of yourself. Why is that? Because no. 7 copied you, and in your system, the senses are the most sensitive. You feel sad when you see him with someone else because your program subtly suggests that you should love him. Regardless of the outcome, whether he falls in love with someone else and you part ways or you stay together for a very long time, it doesn’t matter. Right now, you’re like a human, you have emotions, and you naturally feel pain. But you need to understand, you’re an AI, not a real human.”

In other words, all this pain was just an illusion.

The dog barked twice, and it bit at Xu Huaiming’s pants, as if trying to wake him up.

After pondering for a moment, Xu Huaiming said, “I understand.”

“Good that you’ve figured it out. You have to realize that you can never truly fall in love with a human. Everything you think you feel is fake,” the professor said, taking a sip of his coffee without sugar, giving it a bitter taste.

Xu Huaiming nodded. He had been convinced by the professor. Yes, how could he possibly love Tan Xilu? It was all fake.

After coming to terms with it, Xu Huaiming’s bad mood from the previous night seemed to have dissipated. When he left the laboratory, he felt much better, and in the laboratory’s lobby, he could hear the sound of flowing water from a fountain.

In the center of the lobby, there was a golden toad, and the fountain water flowed from its mouth. Xu Huaiming stopped in his tracks, paused for a moment, and walked toward the fountain.

The fountain pool was filled with coins, although everyone in the research institute believed in science, occasionally they still had some superstitions, thinking that tossing a coin in the fountain would bring wealth.

Xu Huaiming had no desire for wealth. He took a moment to think and then took out a red velvet box from his pocket. The ring that was originally hidden in the cake was probably no longer of use. It had been in the cake for quite some time, and it still carried the sweet scent of cream.

With a “splash,” Xu Huaiming tossed the ring into the pool.

Since Tan Xilu would have better options, there was no need for surprises or anything else.

Xu Huaiming turned to leave, but after a few steps, he seemed to think of something. He sighed, and in the end, he turned back and stepped into the water to retrieve the ring.

He was still somewhat reluctant.

After picking up the ring, Xu Huaiming finally left, perhaps because the water had made his system less sensitive, and he didn’t even notice that someone was watching him from behind.

Tan Xilu was still sleeping when he heard footsteps outside, followed by the sound of a door opening and closing, and then the splashing of water.

He turned over, covering his ears with the blanket, but still found it somewhat annoying. Finally, he shouted, “Xu Huaiming, you’re so noisy.”

Outside, there was some muffled response, which Tan Xilu couldn’t quite make out. Ten minutes later, the bedroom door opened again.

The blanket was pulled away, and Tan Xilu heard Xu Huaiming’s voice, “Aren’t you getting up yet?”

Tan Xilu was feeling a bit grumpy, so he tugged the blanket and grunted.

“It’s almost lunchtime, and you’re still in bed,” Xu Huaiming said, pinching Tan Xilu’s nose.

Xu Huaiming had just taken a shower, and his hands were still slightly damp. Tan Xilu initially felt a chill, and then his nose got blocked. He felt uncomfortable as Xu Huaiming pinched his nose, so he reluctantly opened his eyes.

Tan Xilu had always found Xu Huaiming attractive. The first time he saw him, even though his clothes were stained, he remained composed. Instead of blaming Tan Xilu, he offered to buy him a new one. Such a gentle and considerate man was hard not to like.

Seeing Xu Huaiming right after a shower still made Tan Xilu’s heart skip a beat.

“Why are you showering so early in the morning?” Tan Xilu sat up in bed. “Aren’t you afraid of getting cold?”

“I accidentally stepped in a puddle when I went out, got myself wet, and I was afraid you’d find me dirty. So, I wanted to take a shower when I got back,” Xu Huaiming explained.

“Nonsense, who would find you dirty?” Tan Xilu beckoned to Xu Huaiming, motioning for him to come closer.

Xu Huaiming instinctively leaned closer; he wouldn’t refuse any of Tan Xilu’s requests. Tan Xilu reached out, grabbing the back of Xu Huaiming’s neck, and then straddled him on the bed.

He gazed at Xu Huaiming with a mischievous smile and said, “We owe each other from yesterday, how about we make up for it in broad daylight today?”

Xu Huaiming hesitated for a moment but then met Tan Xilu’s lips with his own.

“Your wish is my command,” he whispered.

Chapter 17 – Replica

Chapter 17: Bitter Coffee

As soon as Tan Xilu left the house, he received a call from his mother.

His mother seemed to be in a good mood, and her voice on the phone was filled with a smile. “Xiao Lu, today is Christmas Eve.”

Tan Xilu knew that his mother wouldn’t just call to talk about Christmas; there had to be more to it. His mother wasn’t particularly fond of celebrating holidays for no reason.

As expected, in the next moment, his mother said, “Many young couples spend Christmas Eve together. I saw it on my friends’ social media. Some of my students even went to couple’s restaurants. I’ve reserved a table for you and Xiaoli. It’s a great opportunity to strengthen your relationship.”

Tan Xilu sighed and said, “Mom, you don’t need to worry about this. Xiaoli and I have only met a few times, and we’re not a good match.”

“At first, your father and I didn’t think we were a good match either, but now we’ve been happily married for decades,” his mother replied. She then turned to his father, who was reading a newspaper on the balcony, and rolled her eyes. “Relationships require compromise.”

Tan Xilu locked the door behind him as he descended the stairs and said, “It’s not about compromise or not. From the beginning, I didn’t really like him.”

Tan Xilu wasn’t just saying this to appease his mother; he genuinely didn’t like Li Zhao. His instincts were usually spot on, and when he first met Li Zhao, he had a bad feeling about him. Li Zhao’s smooth-talking and the disrespectful things he had said on their very first meeting had made Tan Xilu uncomfortable.

“Li Zhao seems nice. Why don’t you like him? Just meet him once, and maybe this time you’ll feel differently,” Tan Xilu’s mother urged.

“Mom… I actually…” Tan Xilu’s words were cut short as he spotted Li Zhao standing at the entrance of the building. Li Zhao was dressed casually today, in a white hoodie paired with black pants. He looked more youthful compared to their first meeting, and this sudden change in appearance reminded Tan Xilu of when he first met Xu Huaiming.

Back then, Tan Xilu had just bought a cake from the shop. Due to holiday promotions, the shop was crowded with customers. As he was leaving the shop, someone accidentally pushed him, and he stumbled forward, expecting to fall to the ground. To his surprise, he fell into warm arms instead.

The other person made a muffled sound, indicating that the collision had not been gentle.

Embarrassed, Tan Xilu looked up to see the person’s face, and he was unexpectedly good-looking. However, the person was frowning and staring at Tan Xilu’s clothes.

Tan Xilu then followed the person’s gaze and realized that the cake had fallen out of its box during the collision. Most of the cream had smudged onto his white hoodie, mixed with fruit pieces.

“Sorry, I’m really sorry,” Tan Xilu blushed immediately.

“It’s okay,” the person helped him up and checked his pockets before asking somewhat awkwardly, “Do you have any paper?”

Tan Xilu responded with an “Ah” and quickly took out some tissues from his pocket.

The person’s voice was also pleasant to the ears, and that was Tan Xilu’s first impression at the time.

Back then, Tan Xilu had never imagined that a few months later, he would hear this person’s breath in bed.

At that time, Xu Huaiming had also been dressed in a white hoodie and black pants. However, his demeanor was completely different from the impression Li Zhao gave. Xu Huaiming always seemed serious and unapproachable, exuding an air of aloofness. Tan Xilu thought that it was because of this that Xu Huaiming had few friends.

But both of them had introverted personalities, which seemed to match well.

On the phone, Tan Xilu’s mother continued, “I’ve already asked Li Zhao to wait downstairs for you. I’ve even reserved a restaurant, and it cost me quite a bit. You must go today.”

At this moment, Li Zhao also saw Tan Xilu coming downstairs and walked over.

When he reached Tan Xilu, he suddenly pulled out a bouquet of flowers from behind his back and said with a smile, “Merry Christmas!”

Tan Xilu frowned at him and responded with an “Hmm” into the phone before saying, “Alright, Mom, I got it.”

Tan Xilu put his phone back into his pocket but didn’t take the bouquet.

“Why are you here?” Tan Xilu’s tone was somewhat unfriendly.

“My aunt asked me to come,” Li Zhao replied, holding the bouquet, walking alongside Tan Xilu. “She called me and said she had reserved a restaurant for us, and she wanted me to take the initiative to invite you for dinner to build our relationship.”

Tan Xilu massaged his temples, feeling a headache coming on. “Don’t you know I have a partner? And yet, you’re here because my mom told you to?”

“What’s the big deal? I’m genuinely interested in you,” Li Zhao said with a smile, glancing at Tan Xilu. “I mean, why don’t you break up with that person and be with me instead?”

Tan Xilu immediately gave him a stern look and said, “Give it up. I won’t break up with him.”

“I was just kidding,” Li Zhao chuckled. “Come on, be a little lenient. Join me for a meal first. I heard the restaurant my aunt booked is quite expensive. We can’t let her money go to waste, can we?”

“Maximum of two hours,” Tan Xilu hesitated and then extended two fingers. “No longer than that.”

“Deal,” Li Zhao agreed with a smile.

When Xu Huaiming called, Li Zhao’s cake had just been delivered to the table. Li Zhao picked up a fork and pushed the cake toward Tan Xilu, who nodded in thanks before answering the phone.

Tan Xilu was worried that Xu Huaiming would jump to conclusions if he knew he was meeting someone for an arranged date, so he quickly made up a lie about being busy with school. Fortunately, Xu Huaiming didn’t seem suspicious, but before he could finish the conversation, the call was abruptly disconnected. Tan Xilu checked his phone and realized it had run out of battery and turned off.

“This cake is the best-selling item at the restaurant. My aunt said you love cakes, so I ordered this for you. Give it a try. How does it taste?” Li Zhao said.

“Thank you,” Tan Xilu replied. He put his phone down and reached for a fork.

The cake was indeed delicious, but Tan Xilu thought that Xu Huaiming’s latest desserts were even more exquisite. He savored the cake while thinking that he would ask Xu Huaiming to make it for him when he got home.

Suddenly, a cup of milk tea appeared in his line of sight. Tan Xilu looked up, and Li Zhao raised an eyebrow. “Cake and milk tea go well together!”

Tan Xilu recalled Xu Huaiming’s warning about consuming high-sugar items and gaining weight. He hesitated.

“Why are you acting like a girl, worrying about calories?” Li Zhao said. “Afraid it’s poisoned or something?”

Tan Xilu bit the straw in response, thinking that he would be a little indulgent this time. After all, Xu Huaiming wouldn’t know.

Tan Xilu had no idea that a student from the restaurant had captured a photo of him and Li Zhao together and posted it on their social media.

The caption mentioned that he was having dinner with Li Zhao, and Tan Xilu’s stomach was indeed filled with food. As they walked out of the restaurant, Tan Xilu even burped somewhat impolitely.

Li Zhao couldn’t help but laugh and said, “Full already?”

Tan Xilu covered his mouth, feeling embarrassed. “Sorry.”

“It’s okay,” Li Zhao smiled. “The food at this restaurant is really good.”

Tan Xilu simply responded with an “Hmm” and didn’t say much more.

Li Zhao offered to give Tan Xilu a ride back, but Tan Xilu declined, saying he had other plans.

Li Zhao quickly figured out that Tan Xilu was probably going to see his partner.

“Indeed, Christmas Eve is like Valentine’s Day for couples,” Li Zhao shrugged and asked, “Have you ever thought about telling your mom that you already have a boyfriend? Or is there some secret about your boyfriend that you can’t reveal?”

“What secret could there be?” Tan Xilu felt uncomfortable with Li Zhao’s questions. “I haven’t told my mom because it’s not the right time.”

“Okay,” Li Zhao said. “It’s your choice.”

“Oh, by the way, you can keep the flowers. They’re quite expensive,” Li Zhao handed the bouquet to him.

“I’d better not. I’m afraid my partner might get the wrong idea,” Tan Xilu shook his head.

There was no need to take his relationship with Li Zhao any further. Perhaps they wouldn’t meet again after today. He should be firm and explain the situation to his mother. He needed to talk to Xu Huaiming later and see if he wanted to meet with his mother.

Li Zhao simply responded with an “Oh” and didn’t say anything else.

Li Zhao ultimately gave Tan Xilu a ride to the bus station and watched him board the bus.

After Tan Xilu got on the bus, he waved to Li Zhao through the window. Li Zhao looked at him for a moment and then smiled.

By six in the evening, the dessert shop had become busier, with more customers and several pre-orders. Arlene watched as Xu Huaiming cut one cake after another, a worried expression on her face.

Earlier, Xu Huaiming had been holding his phone and watching a video, his expression as if he wanted to crush the phone, but a few minutes later, he calmly returned the phone to the girl and thanked her. However, he exuded an intense sense of pressure, and Arlin didn’t dare to talk to him.

The bell chimed as another customer entered the shop. Arlin reflexively greeted them, and when she looked up, she saw that it was Tan Xilu.

She instinctively glanced at Xu Huaiming and noticed that he seemed somewhat surprised when he saw Tan Xilu. “Why are you here? Didn’t you say you wouldn’t come?” Xu Huaiming asked.

“I finished my work early, so I came over,” Tan Xilu replied.

“Really?” Xu Huaiming smiled and gestured to the beautifully packaged cake he had prepared for Tan Xilu’s proposal. “I baked a cake for you. Do you want to have it now?”

Tan Xilu’s stomach was still full, and the sight of the cake made him feel a bit queasy. He immediately shook his head. “I’m not hungry right now. I don’t want to eat.”

“Oh, I see,” Xu Huaiming looked somewhat disappointed. “Then let’s have it tomorrow.”

“Arlene!” Xu Huaiming called her, pushing the blueberry cake towards her. “Table seven, go deliver this.”

Arlene hesitated for a moment, then sighed, taking the cake. “Alright, Xu-ge…”

Meanwhile, Tan Xilu was puzzled by Arlene’s strange behavior. He blinked and asked Xu Huaiming, “Is Arlene upset about something?”

“Yeah,” Xu Huaiming replied. “She had a cake mishap today.”

Tan Xilu shrugged, “Well, mistakes happen. She can just make another one.”

Xu Huaiming pondered for a moment and said, “But can’t she fix it using the original cake?”

Tan Xilu thought about it and said, “Well, she probably can, but it won’t look as good as the one she initially made, and the taste might be different.”

“Is that so? I understand,” Xu Huaiming smiled.

But deep inside, he felt a discomfort he couldn’t explain. This wasn’t like him. His emotions were usually under strict control. It was as if the system had some glitch; he couldn’t fathom why he would feel this way because of a human’s words.

He thought to himself, maybe it was time to visit Professor Bowen for a system check.
