Chapter 48 – "You're so perverted, ah."

A person’s experiences continually accumulate throughout their growth, and after a long period of settling, their personality gradually changes becoming more composed and calm, open-minded and indifferent. Even love becomes quiet and restrained.

This perfectly described Gu Lizhou.

He had always kept himself outside a zone of emotional safety, so that he could swiftly retreat the moment he sensed something was off.

He didn’t want to waste energy, didn’t want to fall for anyone. No joy, no sorrow. He didn’t get jealous and had no temper. It seemed like nothing could ever rattle his nerves.

But everything changed when it came to Zhong Weishi.

He became cautious, insecure, easily moved to joy or sorrow.

He broke down and cried at the airport over a fake news report, exhausted himself just to make Zhong Weishi’s path a little smoother, and got overwhelmingly jealous over a meaningless WeChat account.

He felt like he was no longer himself.

And he realized that so-called emotional defense line had long since disappeared.

If he had to describe what love looked like, it would probably be your emotions being completely controlled by someone else.

And for men, there were also subtle physical reactions that were hard to control.

While Zhong Weishi took deep breaths of oxygen, he blinked, appearing to gaze at Gu Lizhou affectionately. But in reality, he was oxygen-deprived and his brain was still frozen.

The kitchen filled with the scent of pork rib rice, wave after wave. His stomach grumbled.

Gu Lizhou’s arms were still tightly wrapped around his back.

“Hungry, ah?”

Zhong Weishi nodded, but he didn’t want to move. Not at all. He just wanted to stay in this embrace.

His arms tightened, and he rubbed his chin twice against the man’s neck before blatantly planting two kisses there.

He heard Gu Lizhou laughing, and without even looking, he knew just how attractive and captivating that smile was.

His senses gradually returned, and his memory became clearer.

A reality he had never dared to hope for was now right in front of him: Gu Lizhou liked him.

Liked him madly.

Just like how they had just madly exchanged breaths.

It was enough to make his legs go weak.

He finally understood how Uncle Cao must have felt when he and his girlfriend were all over each other.

It was the urge to possess, the need to release emotions.

Kissing someone you like wasn’t disgusting at all. In fact, it was kind of romantic.

And when Gu Lizhou’s tongue lightly touched the seam of his lips, everything unfolded naturally. His mind went blank, and the deepest impression left behind was softness.

If kissing didn’t exist in this world, he probably would’ve never known that a person’s tongue could be so soft, so flexible.

No one was counting how long they kissed. All they knew was that the piano music upstairs had changed from one song to another, and the two of them, like a pair of playful cats, rolled around the couch, entangled in kisses.

During that time, all his past grievances, confusion, and melancholy dissipated like smoke.

Seeing that he still had no intention of getting up, Gu Lizhou raised an eyebrow slightly and reached out to squish his face into a bun.

“Still want to go again?”

This time, Zhong Weishi didn’t ask for permission before leaning down and giving him a quick kiss. He grinned, “Can I kiss you without filing a report from now on?”

Gu Lizhou laughed so hard his chest rose and fell, making the person lying on top of him tremble all over along with him.

“Have you been wanting to kiss me for a long time?”

Zhong Weishi got a little embarrassed by that and shot back, “What about you?”

“Why else do you think I came back?” Gu Lizhou said as he scratched at his waist.

Zhong Weishi stifled a laugh, twisting into a flailing caterpillar, then buried his face in Gu Lizhou’s neck and muttered, “Actually, me too… it’s been a while… so long I can’t even remember when it started… probably before you left.”

His lips were pressed right against Gu Lizhou’s ear, every syllable he spoke lightly brushing against the outer rim, making it ticklish and tingly.

“Sometimes having too much charm is a burden, ah. Everyone around me ends up falling helplessly in love. But there’s only one of me.”

“Shameless.” Zhong Weishi bit down on the base of his ear, his teeth gently rubbing twice.

Gu Lizhou kept going: “But starting today, I’m yours. Just yours.”

Zhong Weishi froze for a second, then bashfully buried himself in his shoulder and giggled like a fool. “You said it, ah. No take-backs. If you go back on your word, I’ll chop you up.”

Gu Lizhou let out a puff of laughter and patted his lower back. “If you don’t get off me now, it’s not just going to stop at kissing, ah.”

Zhong Weishi instantly sprang up from the couch. “Food! I’m starving!”

Gu Lizhou lowered his head and chuckled quietly.

That step had taken so much effort that his heartbeat still hadn’t calmed down.

Zhong Weishi was bustling around in the kitchen, even humming a light, cheerful English song. He looked happy, full of energy.

“Just wait a little, the soup’s almost done!” he called out while tending to the pot, turning back now and then to glance at Gu Lizhou.

Whenever their eyes met, they shared a smile full of mutual understanding.

Outside, the sky was gradually darkening.

Gu Lizhou got up and turned on the light, then slowly wandered into the kitchen. His gaze stayed fixed on Zhong Weishi, scanning him openly, with no intention of holding back.

He hugged the boy from behind, resting his chin on his shoulder, his expression tender, just about to whisper a few romantic lines.

But then Zhong Weishi raised his hand and slammed down on a garlic clove; startling him so much he nearly bit his tongue.

All traces of romance instantly vanished.

Gu Lizhou propped his chin up and retreated from the danger zone.

Once the food was ready, the scent wafted out and attracted the little calico cat Cao Zhiheng had recently adopted. The little thing tilted its head up at the table and meowed incessantly.

The cat had been found near a trash bin. It was drizzling that day when Zhong Weishi went downstairs to throw out the garbage and spotted it by accident.

If it had been the past, he might’ve given it a bit of food and then pretended not to see it. After all, it was already hard enough feeding himself, let alone a cat.

But things were different now.

The cat didn’t run or hide when he approached, just curled up weakly under a plastic bag, and Zhong Weishi ended up bringing it home.

Cao Zhiheng’s girlfriend had instantly fallen in love with it and scooped it up into her arms. Now, the cat was practically the little overlord of Lanshan Apartments. Wherever there was food, it showed up. It mostly lived in the cat bed right outside unit 303 and would occasionally stir up trouble for Old Cao, like batting his freshly made props off the table onto the floor.

Gu Lizhou tore off a bit of rib meat and tossed it to the cat. After finishing, the little thing jumped straight onto his lap, meowing.

A few cute little paw prints immediately appeared on his black pants.

Gu Lizhou scratched its chin and said, “Call me Dad.”

“Why are you so obsessed with being a dad?” Zhong Weishi said while gnawing on a rib.

The kitten let out a perfectly timed meow.

“What, jealous? Don’t want Dad having a second child?”

A bone hit him square on the forehead.

“Talk properly. Stop throwing things. Who taught you that?”

“I learned it from you.”

Gu Lizhou patted the cat’s head. “Look, your little brother is very well-behaved.” He lifted the kitten for a look. “Oh wait, your little sister.”

“Are you gonna eat or not?” Zhong Weishi tapped the edge of his bowl.

“Eating.” Gu Lizhou placed the kitten back on the floor, brushed off his pant legs, and got up to wash his hands. “Are you jealous of your little sister? Just admit it. Dad will spoil you more from now on.”

As he passed by, Gu Lizhou scratched Zhong Weishi’s chin, only to get bitten irritably.

“You do that again and I won’t go easy on you, ah.” Gu Lizhou pinched his jaw.

“What are you gonna do?” Zhong Weishi looked up at him.

“All kinds of not going easy.” Gu Lizhou flicked his forehead hard.

A loud pop.

A faint red mark appeared on his forehead.

“Aw.” Zhong Weishi rubbed his head. “You’re always committing domestic violence.”

It was Gu Lizhou’s first time eating braised pork ribs with rice. He had no frame of reference for how it should taste. He just simply thought it was delicious. But even if he had something to compare it to, he felt that nothing could top this.

Because it had fused deeply with the taste of his first kiss.

From now on, every time he ate ribs with rice, he would definitely think of today.

Under the table, the kitten was circling around, its tail flicking up and brushing against Zhong Weishi’s leg. After a while, it plopped its butt down onto his slipper.

Zhong Weishi had no choice but to give up the slipper and reached out with his foot to hook onto Gu Lizhou’s instead.

And just like that, the four legs tangled together.

Halfway through the meal, Zhong Weishi suddenly looked up and asked, “Ge, have you ever had a girlfriend?”

“Nope.”

“No way?” Zhong Weishi was shocked.

“Why would I lie?” Gu Lizhou replied honestly. “Work used to keep me busy. I didn’t have time to think about love. And once I passed a certain age, being single actually felt pretty nice…” He looked straight into Zhong Weishi’s eyes. “Until I met you.”

“Oh…” Zhong Weishi giggled. “Then your first kiss was with me too, ah.”

Gu Lizhou gave a rare shy nod. He thought the kid was about to praise his kissing skills, but instead the other said, “You’re 32 and that was your first? I’m impressed. If you hadn’t met me, you probably would’ve died alone.”

“…………” Nothing good ever came out of that mouth. Gu Lizhou bit down on a piece of cartilage with a loud crack.

A person who can turn even a confession into profanity shouldn’t be trusted.

Next door, Uncle Cao hadn’t seen the kitten even after dinnertime, so he came around with its food bowl, knocking as he went. The kitten, upon hearing the sound, immediately knew food was coming and darted out like a shot.

Cao Zhiheng also had a bag of cherries in his hand and wanted to ask if the old man and the child in unit 301 wanted any. As he reached the window and glanced in out of habit, his footsteps suddenly froze.

The shock of what he saw made Cao Zhiheng instinctively duck and hide.

That old beast was kissing the kid!

Absolutely eye-burning.

Clutching his eyes, Cao Zhiheng crouched down and hunched his way back to his apartment.

“Old Gu! I need to seriously, solemnly warn you that this can’t go on! Didn’t you say it yourself? He’s just a kid! What are you doing with a kid?!”

“Your father and mother would be disappointed! Your friends and relatives would be disappointed too!”

“Look at yourself now. Are you even a man anymore? Huh?”

“What are you laughing at? Does your expression mean you’re questioning what I’m saying?!”

Sitting across from him was the little calico cat, staring blankly at its owner, occasionally lifting a paw to lick its toes.

Cao Zhiheng typed out his carefully worded speech in the notes app. Otherwise, he feared he wouldn’t be able to argue with Gu Lizhou.

But facts proved that even with all his preparation, going head-to-head with Gu Lizhou’s mouth was like throwing an egg at a rock.

“He’s just a kid! What are you doing with a kid?!”

“Kissed him,” Gu Lizhou said calmly. “And he’s already an adult, okay.”

“Who was it who yelled on the street that he was just a little kid and didn’t know anything?””

“That was last year. He’s grown up now.”

Cao Zhiheng was so infuriated by his shamelessness that he sucked in a sharp breath.

“If you really want to date, it’s not like I can stop you, but as your childhood friend, I have to remind you of a few things. He’s just in his early twenties, basically a little kid. He probably thinks you’re fun and new, you treat him well, so he sees you as someone to rely on. But have you thought about the future? Ten years from now, you’ll be over forty, and he’ll still be in his prime!”

“So what if I’m over forty?” Gu Lizhou shrugged indifferently.

“When I was twenty, I used to wonder what I’d do when I hit thirty. But once I actually turned thirty, what changed? Life still goes on, doesn’t it? Is it really that different? And besides, I don’t feel mentally old at all. It’s your mindset that ages first—that’s what really makes you old.”

Cao Zhiheng sighed and glanced down at his notes app.

“Fine, let’s move to the next point. What if he becomes famous one day? With all the people and flings and eye candy in that world throwing themselves at him. Can he resist that? Once he’s famous, he’ll be surrounded by people treating him well, caring for him, offering him everything. Can you really stay by his side all the time? Especially with how chaotic the entertainment industry is now. Not just men and women, but even men with men…”

Gu Lizhou leaned against the railing, cigarette between his lips. When he smiled, a thin trail of smoke escaped from his mouth.

“With all that worst-case-scenario planning of yours, no one should bother dating at all. Your girlfriend works in a foreign company, right? All her bosses are Westerners—tall, muscular, blond-haired, blue-eyed, and very gentlemanly. You’re just a traditional, middle-aged, conservative straight guy. Can you even compare?”

“That’s twisting the argument!” Cao Zhiheng snapped. “At least we can get legally married. She’s not some celebrity, just working in an office and fewer temptations there.”

Gu Lizhou laughed even harder, snapping back, “Sure, I admit getting a marriage certificate is a sacred process, but what can a piece of paper really bind? You think the divorce rate’s low these days? Even my parents got divorced.”

He clicked his tongue and continued, “Now that I think about it, dating a man isn’t bad at all. No marital obligations, no shared property nad love is just love, clean and open, with no expectations of the other person.”

There was just no reasoning with a man like Gu Lizhou.

As they talked, the conversation gradually turned into a full-blown debate on love.

Cao Zhiheng couldn’t understand how this gloomy old man could be so confident and composed in this “defense of love” battle.

He was so blindly optimistic it was almost inhuman!

“You really think your parents would be okay with you dating a guy?”

“They didn’t ask for my opinion when they got divorced, so why can’t I choose who I want to be with?”

Cao Zhiheng was getting more fired up: “There’s a generation gap every three years and between you two, that’s three generation gaps! Even if you could do the splits, you wouldn’t be able to bridge that!”

Gu Lizhou remained calm and relaxed: “Being with him makes me feel ten years younger, so the gap doesn’t feel that big. Besides, no matter how tempting the world is, is it more attractive than my personal charm?”

Truly, honest words are the hardest to hear.

Cao Zhiheng raised both hands in defeat. “If you won’t believe me, I won’t bother anymore. It’s not me who’s going to get hurt or dumped in the end.”

“It’s not that I don’t believe you.” Gu Lizhou patted his shoulder. “I know you mean well. I also know my own limits.”

“What limits?”

“My limit is that I’ll hold on till the end.”

“…”

Love really does make people brain-dead.

The evening breeze blew gently. The ember on Gu Lizhou’s cigarette glowed and dimmed with the wind. He took one last drag, then put it out.

“When I’m with him, I’m really happy.”

Cao Zhiheng curled his lips but didn’t say anything more.

When Gu Lizhou came back inside, Zhong Weishi had already washed the whole big bag of cherries. His mouth was stuffed full, and he mumbled unclearly, “Did Uncle Cao figure out we’re together? I saw him glancing at me several times just now.”

“Yeah.” Gu Lizhou pulled a few stems away from the corner of his mouth.

Zhong Weishi blinked. “What did he say? Is he against it?”

Gu Lizhou smiled. “He told me to keep a close eye on you, said if you ever blow up and get super famous, don’t go running off with someone else.”

“I won’t.” Zhong Weishi scooted closer to Gu Lizhou. “I promise. If I do, you can have someone break my leg.”

“Which leg?”

Zhong Weishi was about to say, “Whichever,” but when he saw the amused look Gu Lizhou couldn’t hide, he cursed, “You’re such a pervert, ah.”

“How, ah, does that make me a pervert? What did I even say?”

“You just are, anyway.”

Gu Lizhou didn’t pursue the “breaking legs” topic any further. After all, that would be illegal.

“He also said there’s a big age gap between us, that we’re from different generations. Do you think we have a generation gap?”

Of course they did. A huge one.

But this wasn’t the moment to speak the truth, ah…

Zhong Weishi patted his shoulder. “Don’t feel insecure. You’re actually my ideal type. How do I put it… when I talk to you, it’s like we’re living on two different planets. It’s a really fun experience.”

“…” Gu Lizhou clenched his teeth, seething with silent frustration.

Zhong Weishi chuckled and leaned over to peek at his phone screen, seeing it open to an online shopping page. “What are you trying to buy?”

“Face masks.”

“Pfft.”

“What’s so funny? Your Dad here has decided to start taking care of himself. When you’re 20, I’ll be 30. When you’re 30, I’ll still be 30. When you’re 40, hey, hey, I’ll still be 30~”

“You immortal freak.”

Zhong Weishi lifted two cherries to his mouth, but the immortal freak turned away without eating them.

“You don’t like them? They’re really sweet, just try one!”

“What do you have a mouth for?”

“To eat, ah.”

“…”

Zhong Weishi caught on from Gu Lizhou’s suggestive side-eye. He grinned, bit a cherry stem, and leaned in.

Gu Lizhou turned his head and pinched his cheeks with both hands.

Zhong Weishi was still young, and even without any skin care, his skin felt like a baby’s; smooth and elastic.

Gu Lizhou gently pinched outward, and in an instant, the boy’s face turned into a little steamed bun.

Then he bit down on the cherry.

It really was sweet.

Zhong Weishi started giggling, and Gu Lizhou couldn’t help but laugh along with him.

For him, love had never been without reason.

That handsome face, bubbly personality, unwavering beliefs, kind nature, and that contagious smile…

Every trait was a bonus.

Even his lack of brains was kind of adorable.

The boy’s youthful energy was like a beam of light, tearing through the fog and making Gu Lizhou’s world brighter.

Zhong Weishi felt his breath getting closer and instinctively closed his eyes.

Forehead, brow, nose bridge, lips, chin…

With every touch, a chubby pink heart popped up beside his head.

Chapter 47 – "Do you like me?"

The new drama was scheduled to start filming on the 6th, leaving very little time. As soon as the contract was signed, Xie Yun handed the script to Zhong Weishi and told him to start memorizing it.

The assistant had just finished photocopying it. It was thick like a textbook, heavy in the hand, and any random page you flipped to had lines for the male lead.

Zhong Weishi buried his face in the pages and took a deep breath, catching a faint scent of ink. He was like a goblin who had just inhaled a massive dose of vitality, his whole being seemed to radiate with energy.

To him, this wasn’t just a script. It was a beam of light illuminating the path ahead. In it, he saw hope and clearly saw the road beneath his feet.

Maybe one day, he really could leave Yucheng and move to a bigger city.

Maybe one day, he could truly become someone different.

New year, new beginnings.

Zhong Weishi spent the entire New Year immersed in the joy of getting to act in a drama, completely unable to pull himself away. He managed to find time to return to his hometown and visit Grandma Zhao, and for the rest of the days, he was high on adrenaline, memorizing his lines like he was pumped with chicken blood.

On the eve of the Lantern Festival, Zhong Weishi treated a few friends from the Nanhu Drama Club to a meal.

It was a kind of farewell.

Because he probably wouldn’t have much time to act in stage plays anymore.

The one who had originally brought him into the drama club was a veteran actor named Fu, already in his seventies, with nearly fifty years in the industry. In his younger days, he’d been a martial arts actor. He and Zhong Weishi had a strong bond, always referring to each other as mentor and apprentice.

Zhong Weishi was most reluctant to part with him.

“No matter how far you fly, never forget your roots.” Elder Fu always looked at him with a warm smile, as if looking at his own son. “Come back and visit whenever you can, recharge a little. No matter how small this place is, there will always be a spot for you here.”

He knew that once the little sparrow’s wings grew strong, it was bound to fly away, so he wasn’t all that surprised.

Before they parted, he gave Zhong Weishi a calligraphy piece: “Heaven rewards diligence; tranquility brings far-reaching goals.”

The brushwork was bold and vigorous, wild and full of spirit, just like his own personality.

Zhong Weishi’s eyes were red. “I’ll definitely come back to visit you all.”

Old-Timer Fu said, “I hope the next time I see you, it’ll be on TV.”

Zhong Weishi nodded hard.

To him, the past six months of performing in the drama club had been far more valuable than his four previous years working as an extra.

What Senior Fu had taught him were lessons he would benefit from for a lifetime.

With the TV drama about to start shooting, Zhong Weishi had already memorized most of his lines fluently. Gu Lizhou, who was playing the “female lead,” had also been dragged into practicing lines with him so often that he could recite them in his sleep.

In early March, Xie Yun sent Zhong Weishi the WeChat profile of the actress playing the female lead, hoping the two could get familiar with each other before filming began, so their on-camera expressions wouldn’t come off too stiff.

The girl’s name was Guo Manyu. She was twenty-eight, cheerful and outgoing. Right off the bat, she sent a bunch of silly meme stickers. Chatting with her felt easy for Zhong Weishi.

Since they were both newcomers, Zhong Weishi was curious and clicked into her Moments to see what she looked like.

Gu Lizhou floated out from the living room like a ghost. “What are you looking at now?”

“You scared me.” Zhong Weishi laughed and teased, “Checking out a pretty girl.”

Gu Lizhou snatched the phone from behind him, and Zhong Weishi quickly reached out to grab it back. The two of them tussled, evenly matched.

“Let go! Are you letting go or not? If you don’t, I’m gonna bite you ah!” Zhong Weishi pointed at his nose.

“Bite me!” Gu Lizhou tightened his grip on the phone.

Then a shrill wail rang out: “You beast! Let go! Let go with your mouth!”

There were already two neat rows of crescent-shaped bite marks on the back of Gu Lizhou’s hand.

“Are you part dog or something?”

“Woof!”

Gu Lizhou burst out laughing, and in the end, the two of them squeezed their heads together to look at the screen.

Guo Manyu had a tall, upright figure, clearly the result of regular training. Her arms and legs were firm and toned, very different from some of the other female celebrities who were so thin they looked out of shape.

She definitely looked like an athlete. Though her appearance wasn’t stunning, it was natural and pure. Her eyes, in particular, were full of life and matched the image of the female lead in the novel quite well.

“What do you think?” Zhong Weishi glanced at him.

“So-so.”

“I thought so too. Not even as pretty as Da Fei in drag.”

Gu Lizhou smirked.

After chatting with the girl for a few minutes, Zhong Weishi put his phone down and continued rehearsing lines with Gu Lizhou.

This scene featured the male and female leads having a picnic with their teammates.

The female lead, slightly tipsy, asked the male lead what kind of girls he liked. The male lead stared into her eyes and answered, “Take a guess.”

Before the female lead had time to guess, her best friend dragged her away to help with the grill.

Aside from playing the female lead, Luo Yin, Gu Lizhou also had to read lines for the supporting characters.

At this moment, one of the male friends chimed in to help the lead: “If someone suddenly asks you what type of person you like, there are usually two possibilities: either she likes you, or her friend likes you.”

Zhong Weishi: “So do you think it’s her who likes me, or her friend?”

“It’s definitely her who likes you ah. Didn’t you see how she kept staring at you? You can’t hide the way you look at someone you like.”

Gu Lizhou couldn’t memorize that many lines, so he read straight from the script the whole time. His tone was lazy and flat, completely devoid of emotion, but Zhong Weishi was still fully immersed in the scene.

Once the scene ended, Gu Lizhou suddenly turned his head and asked, “Do you like that type of girl?”

“Huh?” Zhong Weishi was briefly stunned.

“Do you like girls like Luo Yin?” Gu Lizhou felt like he’d dropped a pretty obvious hint.

As long as Zhong Weishi took a step, even half a step, he would walk the remaining ninety-nine and a half without hesitation.

Zhong Weishi quickly averted his gaze. “There’s no such thing as Luo Yin in real life.”

The setting sun slowly dipped below the horizon, and the sky looked as if it had been scorched by fire with a stretch of deep orange-red that seemed to go on forever.

They sat side by side on the edge of the balcony. From upstairs came the sound of a child playing the piano, sounding gentle and flowing, like a summer breeze brushing against the face, calming and pleasant.

Zhong Weishi was waiting for him to ask again. Maybe this time, he would give a more detailed answer.

But that moment never came.

Gu Lizhou quietly watched the side of his face, noticing how his gaze always wandered. The red glow of the sunset gradually stained the boy’s cheeks.

The older man suddenly came to a realization and smiled. His focused gaze was like that of someone admiring a beautifully artistic oil painting.

The figure in the painting, flustered by his stare, stood up and said, “I’m a bit hungry. I’ll go cook.”

“What are we having tonight?” Gu Lizhou asked with a smile.

Zhong Weishi paused in his steps. “Braised pork ribs with rice. Want some?”

“I do. I want to taste anything you make.”

Zhong Weishi thought the way he spoke so gently was honestly too much and completely unfair.

“Then let’s go with that. I’ll also make some lettuce with oyster sauce and tomato egg soup.”

Gu Lizhou got up to follow. “Let me help.”

“No, no.” Zhong Weishi nervously pushed him back onto the sofa. “You just watch TV. I’ll be done soon.”

Thinking back to the last time Gu Lizhou stayed in the kitchen while he made tangyuan, he ended up overcooking them until they stuck to the pot. The time before that, when he made dumplings, Gu Lizhou stared at him so much he forgot to add salt. And the time before that, he turned cola chicken wings into charred barbecue wings.

Basically, this man was a disaster who used his beauty to bewitch people.

A modern-day Su Daji.1She’s a famous (or infamous) figure from Chinese mythology and history, often portrayed as a beautiful but wicked femme fatale. She was the concubine of King Zhou of Shang (商纣王), the last king of the Shang dynasty.

Su Daji, still relentless, squeezed into the kitchen. “Teach me, ah. I’ll make it for you next time.” His voice even had a hint of aggrieved cuteness.

The modern-day King Zhou crumbled helplessly before such beauty. “Fine, just stand back. Don’t mess up my flow.”

Gu Lizhou nodded and obediently leaned against the fridge.

The kitchen wasn’t well-equipped.Zhong Weishi usually only used one pot and one rice cooker to make meals. As long as Gu Lizhou wasn’t around chatting and distracting him, his food usually turned out pretty good.

He first washed the rice and soaked it in water, then cleaned the pork ribs, brought them to a boil, drained them, and set them aside. In the pot, he heated oil, added green onions, ginger, and garlic to bring out the aroma, then stir-fried the ribs until both sides turned golden. After that, he added soy sauce and tossed them to coat evenly with color.

By now, Gu Lizhou could already smell the rich fragrance of the sauce.

Zhong Weishi poured a big bowl of hot water into the ribs and reminded him, “Remember, always use hot water. If you use cold water, the meat gets tough.”

Gu Lizhou leaned over and took a sniff. “It smells amazing, ah. Can I try a piece?”

“Not yet,” Zhong Weishi said as he poured the rice into the rice cooker, then ladled the ribs and their broth over the top. “See this water level? It should just barely cover the rice, about the height of a fingernail.” As he spoke, he added water to the pot.

The rice would still take a while to cook. Zhong Weishi sliced the tomatoes and set them on a plate, then beat the eggs and set them aside.

His knife skills were fast and precise, even cracking and beating eggs took only one hand. The whole flashy routine left Gu Lizhou dazzled.

By comparison, he really did feel like a useless person.

Since tomato soup cools easily, Zhong Weishi planned to make it after the pork rib rice was done. It will only take a few minutes to boil anyway.

With all the ingredients ready, he washed his hands and said, “Come run lines with me again.”

Gu Lizhou nodded and said yes.

Zhong Weishi took the bookmark off the script and flipped through a few pages, skipping over several lines between the secondary CP.

The upcoming scene was about the male lead, Xiao Chi, going over to Luo Yin’s house to mooch a meal. Neither of them could cook to save their lives, so they ended up turning the kitchen into a disaster zone. Xiao Chi’s hands were covered in black grime from the bottom of the pot, and he reached out, trying to smear it on Luo Yin’s face.

Gu Lizhou couldn’t help clicking his tongue. “With behavior like this, he still thinks he can get a girlfriend ah?”

Zhong Weishi said, “And you think someone who shoves people’s heads into the sink can get a girlfriend?”

Gu Lizhou shrugged. “That’s why I’ve never planned on getting a girlfriend, ah.”

Zhong Weishi let out an “Oh.”

The two of them locked eyes. Neither said anything.

The air turned silent, and a bit tense.

In the script, Xiao Chi and Luo Yin were messing around in the living room. Xiao Chi tripped on a table leg, lost his balance, and fell forward, pinning Luo Yin down onto the sofa.

The two stared into each other’s eyes with deep emotion for a few seconds. Then Xiao Chi closed his eyes, turned his head slightly, and kissed Luo Yin.

Gu Lizhou recalled the sensation of that soft, damp kiss, the corners of his lips curving up in anticipation. Meanwhile, Zhong Weishi, worried that he might feel awkward about it, decided to give it up.

“Let’s skip the kiss scene.”

“Why ah?” Gu Lizhou’s eyes widened, then he realized his reaction was too strong. After a half-second pause, he covered it up with forced confidence. “How will you know if you can knock Luo Yin over if you don’t actually pounce?”

Zhong Weishi burst into laughter. “She’s a girl how could I not push her over?”

Gu Lizhou wouldn’t give up. “But what if?”

“There’s no such thing as what if.”

Zhong Weishi raised his hand and gave Gu Lizhou a shove on the shoulder. Caught off guard, Gu Lizhou lost his balance without much resistance.

On reflex, he reached out to grab Zhong Weishi’s arm, and the two of them ended up tumbling onto the sofa together.

Unlike the scene in the script, Zhong Weishi’s head landed directly on Gu Lizhou’s chest with a heavy thud. He even heard a pained grunt from someone’s throat, as if the sound had been forced straight out of him.

It sounded painful.

He quickly pushed himself up and rubbed the spot where he’d landed, asking anxiously, “Are you okay? Huh? A sternum shouldn’t break that easily, right?”

Gu Lizhou shook his head, and the moment he opened his eyes, he caught sight of a pale stretch of neck.

His eyes immediately lit up.

Zhong Weishi was young, full of energy, and always active. Even in the middle of winter, he dressed casually at home. Today he wore a deep blue velvet pajama set that was clearly cheap based on the stitching, but the fabric looked soft and comfortable.

The top had a single row of buttons, but he didn’t bother buttoning it properly. His kneeling posture caused the collar to fall wide open, revealing both his delicate and prominent collarbones, like a pair of light little wings.

He could even see the two pink dots on his chest.

Zhong Weishi followed his gaze and looked down.

Everything was on full display.

“fvck,” he looked up and gave Gu Lizhou a foolish grin. “What the fvck are you staring at? I’m not shy, ah!”

Gu Lizhou’s eyes didn’t leave his lips for a second. “You’re the one lying on top of me.”

The way he said it..

Was downright suggestive.

Just as Zhong Weishi was about to sit up, the man grabbed one of his shoulders and pulled him down.

Their distance closed in an instant.

Close enough to see every single eyelash on the other’s face.

Gu Lizhou was right-handed, and even with just one hand, he held him down firmly, just like that time when he’d shoved him into the sink.

Of course, Zhong Weishi wasn’t the kind to just take it. If he really wanted to resist, he could’ve easily found a way to break free. But at this moment, his whole body felt like it had been soaked in seawater, soft, limp, completely unwilling to move.

His eyelashes trembled gently under Gu Lizhou’s gaze.

If he could die like this, he honestly wouldn’t mind.

The thought stunned him.

A modern-day Su Daji indeed lived up to the name.

“There’s a ‘gaze filled with deep emotion’ in the script too,” Gu Lizhou said, summoning all the feelings in his body, his eyes sincere and intense.

Zhong Weishi looked down at him, and it felt like staring straight into the scorching sun of midsummer that was overwhelmingly hot.

He couldn’t hold it for even two seconds.

Gu Lizhou’s right hand moved from Zhong Weishi’s shoulder, slowly reaching around his back. Fingers interlocked, he pulled him tightly into his arms.

“Why won’t you look at me?” His voice was soft and teasing, tugging on every single one of Zhong Weishi’s nerves, his gaze filled with endless affection. “Hmm?”

Zhong Weishi lay motionless on top of him, like someone frozen by a pressure point strike.

The script clearly said: “I just realized your eyes aren’t completely black, hey…”

But the large hands resting on his back were anything but obedient, tracing slow, suggestive patterns along his spine. The intimate gesture made his whole body burn.

There was nothing this flirtatious in the script…

Even though the kitchen windows and doors were all open and the air was flowing freely, his brain felt like it was starved of oxygen. His usual gift of quick, witty talk had vanished completely.

His ability to form coherent language had dropped to zero.

All the feelings he had buried inside were now screaming to break free. His face grew redder by the second.

“Do you like me?” Gu Lizhou asked in a whisper.

It took Zhong Weishi half a second to realize that that line wasn’t in the script at all. His mind exploded with a loud boom.

He was stunned speechless.

Upstairs, the child, not knowing whether he was well-rested or just finished with dinner, began playing piano again. This time, it was “Kikujiro’s Summer”, lighthearted and mischievous in tone.

Even more mischievous was his heart, which pounded wildly in his chest.

He had never been so sure of one thing as he was at this moment, and that was that Gu Lizhou had feelings about him.

He had a feeling that this man was about to say something completely outrageous next. His palms began to sweat, and his fingertips trembled.

Gu Lizhou looked calm on the surface, but inside, waves were crashing. This was worlds apart from the confession scene he had once imagined, completely unplanned, and he wasn’t mentally prepared at all. But with the atmosphere already like this, there was no way he was backing down today.

His fingertips turned pale from how tightly he was gripping. He asked tentatively, “If you like me, kiss me. If you don’t, then…”

Before he could finish the sentence, his lips were sealed.

The air froze. The two of them instantly turned into living fossils.

Gu Lizhou’s eyes were half-open. The feeling of the kiss was even softer than he imagined, a little damp, like dew on a rose petal.

He completely forgot how to breathe. His chest burned, and a wave of suffocating heat surged through him.

Zhong Weishi clutched his shoulders tightly, as if pouring all his emotions into that grip.

Everything he had been suppressing exploded in that moment. As Gu Lizhou closed his eyes and tightened his arms around him, he realized the little friend was trembling.

His lips were shaking. His breath was uneven. Even the hands gripping his shoulders were shaking…

Zhong Weishi kissed him so hard his eyes turned red, as if he were about to cry. He pulled back, dazed and overwhelmed, then, this time, he bravely met Gu Lizhou’s gaze.

His eyes were as bright as stars on a summer night.

His heart was racing at an impossible speed, and he felt like he could faint at any moment from tachycardia.

The cheerful piano music upstairs did nothing to calm the storm inside. He finally managed to suppress his swirling emotions and began to form words.

He wanted to say: You figured it out a long time ago, didn’t you? Why didn’t you say anything? Were you holding it in for fun?

Be honest, don’t you like me a whole damn lot too? When did you start? You shameless jerk, you hid it so damn well.

But honestly, I already saw it coming a long time ago…

Hmph.

In the end, though, his oxygen-starved brain completely shut down, and all those questions swirling in his head boiled down to one explosive line of profanity: “I fvcking like you so damn much! Let me kiss you again.”

Who cared who fell first?

The next second, his ass was pinched so hard he wailed in pain.

“Take out the swearing and say it again,” Gu Lizhou said, looking straight at him.

At this point, Zhong Weishi had no pride left to speak of. He lowered his head and confessed again, meek and obedient.

“Can I kiss you one more time?”

Gu Lizhou blinked and smiled. His personality leaned toward the cold and quiet, his tenderness usually hidden in the depths of night, never openly shown. But right now, it could no longer be contained.

There was joy in his expression, a glimmer of anticipation, and even a trace of nervousness.

He reached up, cupped the back of Zhong Weishi’s head, and pressed him down, proving with action that he could kiss him as many times as he wanted.

Their lips met again, and the humid heat of their breaths tangled once more.

Zhong Weishi’s hands slid between the sofa cushions and Gu Lizhou’s back, wrapping around him tightly.

It was the embrace he had longed for. A warmth like sunlight in the dead of winter, surrounding him completely.

In the background, cheerful piano music played as they felt each other’s heated breaths, racing heartbeats, and the steadily rising temperature between them.

It was their first real kiss, and neither of them had any experience. Zhong Weishi’s lips tingled from the pressure, and Gu Lizhou had already lost all sense of reason.

Oxygen was clearly running low, but neither of them wanted to let go.

Chapter 19

Qin Mu shut the door and slapped himself hard a few times in front of the mirror.

He told himself: Can you have some damn shame? He saved you, protected you, and did so much for you. How can you have such dirty thoughts? You’re a fvcking homosexual. What right do you have to mess up his normal life? Do you even deserve it?

After a sleepless night, he made up his mind to bury these feelings deep down and focus all his attention on studying. He wanted to get into K University. At first, it was to escape his tormented home life, but now he had a more important reason; he wanted to be somewhere closer to Shen Liu.

The college entrance exam and a secret crush were both the toughest trials in life. And on top of that, he was still battling persistent PTSD. For more than a year, he crawled through that swamp of struggle, fighting with himself, falling countless times, and getting back up just as many. Shen Liu was his endless source of strength, like the morning star shining high in the sky. Just seeing it meant dawn was near and gave him the strength to keep going.

Qin Mu tempered his heart to become ever stronger, slowly revealing a deep, steady, and resilient core.

Finally, his efforts bore fruit in the national college entrance exam. He had estimated his score earlier and felt confident, so he appeared calm. On the contrary, it was Shen Liu who was more excited than when he got into college himself. He ran straight to K University’s admissions office and picked up Qin Mu’s acceptance letter. As soon as he walked in the door, he wrapped Qin Mu in a hug and kissed him loudly on the forehead, praising, “Not bad! Amazing! You really made me proud.” He looked just like a father who had finally seen his son live up to expectations.

With Shen Liu hugging him like that, Qin Mu’s heart was pounding. He subtly moved away and said, “What do you want to eat? I’ll go buy groceries later.”

“Groceries, my ass.” Shen Liu pinched his cheek. “Your big bro’s taking you to eat at restaurant. Today we’re celebrating properly.”

Qin Mu thought the ‘restaurant’ he was referring to was a small, home-style restaurant downstairs. But before he knew it, Shen Liu had dragged him all the way to Guangyue Tower in the city center. Shen Liu boldly reserved the biggest private room and plopped down to start ordering.

Qin Mu glanced at the menu and instantly felt all his hairs stand on end. He whispered, “It’s too expensive. Let’s go somewhere else.”

“It’s a special occasion, so we’re eating well today.” Shen Liu laughed. Normally, he was a very down-to-earth guy. Except for being picky about where he lived, he didn’t care much about food, clothes, or transportation. He had no issue eating at street stalls, wore tank tops out and about, and if there was no car, he would just walk. Because of that, no one around him—not even Qin Mu, who lived with him day in and day out—knew anything about his background. Not that he was deliberately hiding it; he just didn’t see the need to mention it. But today, his rich-boy flair was on full display as he casually ordered an entire lavish feast.

Qin Mu looked at the lobsters swirling through dry ice and couldn’t help laughing and crying at the same time. “You planning to starve next month?”

“No worries. When it’s time to pay, we’ll just run.” Shen Liu suggested.

Qin Mu played along. “Then I’ll bend down to tie my shoes first.”

Guests started arriving one after another, all of whom Qin Mu knew. When Fatty saw the lobster and roast duck, his eyes lit up. “Damn! This spread… Liu boy, you went all in, huh?”

Feiyan looked puzzled. “Did you win the lottery or something?”

Glasses shook his head. “The odds of him winning the lottery are too low. Robbing a bank seems more likely. Fatty, go check if there are any cop cars outside.”

       Everyone burst out laughing.

“People feel refreshed when good things happen to them, and even if you spend a thousand gold coins, it will come back again.” Shen Liu dr4p3d an arm lazily over the back of Qin Mu’s chair, showing off his ridiculous literary flair. “Little Wood got into K University. As his big brother, of course I’ve got to throw him a proper celebration.” He patted Qin Mu’s back. “Go pour some drinks for your seniors.”

Qin Mu got up and poured wine for each of them. Feiyan stuffed a large ribbon-tied gift box into his hands. “Take this, or else people will say we shameless upperclassmen just came to freeload.”

Seeing that Qin Mu didn’t want to accept it, she smiled and said, “It’s a little something from all of us. Congratulations on getting into the law department at K University. From now on, you’re my junior. If you ever need anything, come find me. I’ve got your back.” Just as Qin Mu was about to thank her, she leaned in with a mock-serious whisper, “That includes dating too. I know a few great guys.”

His ears immediately turned bright red, and he was beyond embarrassed.

“Woody, get back here after you get your gifts!” Shen Liu shouted. “Don’t let that shady matchmaker lead you astray!”

Qin Mu thanked everyone and opened the gift on the spot under Shen Liu’s urging. It was a brand-new laptop.

Fatty said, “We talked it over and figured it had to be something practical. This computer has a good cost-performance ratio. Though it can’t handle online games, it’s more than enough for browsing and researching stuff. If anything goes wrong, just bring it to me. Ever since my mom teased me for studying computer science but not knowing how to fix a computer, I’ve become the go-to repair guy in our department.”

“If anyone bullies you, come find me,” said the tall guy with the square face. “Our taekwondo club isn’t to be messed with. By the way, are you interested in joining?”

“Don’t go to his place. A gentleman talks, not fights. The literature club welcomes you,” said a pretty girl with a sweet smile.

“Alright, you two quit fighting over him,” Feiyan said. “Classmate xiao Qin Mu is officially under my wing now. I’m taking him to the debate team.”

“… Did I agree to this?” Shen Liu raised an eyebrow.

“Whether you agree or not, he’s part of our law department,” Feiyan teased and gave him a provocative middle finger.

Qin Mu smiled as he watched them bicker. His heart felt like a spring meadow warmed by the sun, soft and cozy. These strangers, unrelated by blood, treated him like a younger brother, giving him love and kindness, supporting, guiding, and accompanying him through tough times. They helped him shed his self-doubt and guard down, keeping a positive outlook on life. More importantly, they gave him something in love he had always lacked, something even more precious than family, which made him deeply grateful.

He took up his cup and stood. Since it was his first time toasting in such a setting, he was a bit nervous, “I toast to everyone with the first cup of wine. It has not been easy for me to come this far. I’ve received a lot of help and care from you all. I will remember your kindness and definitely repay it when I get the chance. This glass… I drink to you all.” With that, he drained the cup.

Fatty whistled, “Qin Mu already finished his drink, what are we waiting for?” Everyone drank along.

“The second toast is to you, Shen Liu ge.” Qin Mu refilled his cup and turned to the man beside him. “Thank you for pulling me out of hell. Thank you for taking me in and giving me a home. And thank you for always encouraging me and helping me get better.” Memories flashed before his eyes, and tears welled up in his eyes as he spoke.

Seeing this, Shen Liu smiled slightly and raised his hand. “Keep going, I think it’s time to properly recognise my great deeds.” He successfully drew a chorus of insults calling him shameless, which eased Qin Mu’s emotional turmoil. Shen Liu gently clinked his glass against Qin Mu’s and said, “I’m proud of you.”

His gaze was gentle and bright, making Qin Mu’s barely settled feelings bubble up again. He quickly tilted his head back and drank. The cold drink warmed him immediately, spreading through his insides and making him a little excited. It was his first time drinking openly. The beer was light, and he didn’t experience any adverse effects, so he continued drinking several more cups without hesitation.

“Young man, don’t be so fierce.” Shen Liu put some black bean sauce ribs on Qin Mu’s plate and tapped the edge of the bowl. “Eat something first.”

“Oh.” Qin Mu put down his cup and started eating.

Fatty waved his lobster claw and rolled his eyes. “Liu boy, you messed up. On a night like this, you’re still acting like an old lady controlling everything.”

Feiyan, already tipsy, wagged her finger. “He’s not an old lady, he’s a man managing his wife, or rather, his child bride.”

Shen Liu laughed, “Drink your own, you shrew.”

Qin Mu blushed and pretended not to hear, quietly eating ribs. Someone came to toast again, and as Qin Mu was about to raise his cup, Shen Liu pressed his finger on the rim.

“Blushing like that and still drinking?” Shen Liu scolded, taking the cup and proudly announcing, “I’ll drink for him.”

Fatty exploded in anger, “Damn it! Last time I nearly got trashed by the team and you didn’t drink for me!”

“You’re wild, he’s domesticated. How can it be the same?” Shen Liu said leisurely.

Qin Mu was startled, almost dropping the food on his chopsticks.

“fvck you Shen Liu, you’re the wild one!” Fatty grabbed the bottle and charged, “You want to drink for him or not? This bottle’s for Qin Mu. You drinking?”

       “I’m toasting Qin Mu too.”

       “Me too.”

Hearing Shen Liu say he would drink for Qin Mu, the whole table rose up to join in, even Glasses wobbling over to join the fun.

Shen Liu turned to Qin Mu with a smile, “Look at these beasts with human faces.” After finishing his drink, he kicked the chair boldly and shouted, “Bring it on! I’ll crush you all till you’re calling me daddy!”

The boys drank, and the girls cheered; the dining table was like a battlefield filled with smoke and killing intent. In the end, it turned into a combined alliance assault against the Big Boss Shen Liu.

       The battle was fierce.

The first squad’s daredevil captain, Fatty, vomited on the spot; Iron Lady Feiyan hugged a coat rack and whispered heartfelt words; the taekwondo club president stuck out his tongue and sang ‘Sunset Glow1A Chinese TV program that focuses on the lives of the elderly. The title refers to the ‘sunset years’—a poetic metaphor for old age, like the warm, glowing light before the sun sets. The second squad was even more drunk and swaying; even the third squad’s logistics and communications officer, Glasses, was knocked out cold.

Shen Liu, the boss who claimed to be able to drink a thousand cups without getting drunk, was still sober. Sitting backwards in his chair with legs spread, he rested his soft head on the backrest and commanded, “Call three cars to load them up. If it’s too much to handle, call a few more people. These trash…”

With him blocking the front, Qin Mu didn’t drink a drop after all. Now he helped the two sober girls hail three taxis and took turns sending the drunkards home. When they returned, Shen Liu had already swiped his card and paid. Leaning against the cashier counter, he waved to him, “Come here and help your ge.”

Qin Mu put his arm around him. Shen Liu was dizzy and weak in the legs, leaning heavily against him. Qin Mu quickly wrapped his arms around Shen Liu’s waist. They were about the same height, so Shen Liu’s chin rested right on his shoulder, forming a face-to-face embrace.

“Little Wood, was Shen Liu ge awesome just now?”

“…Awesome.” Qin Mu’s heart pounded so fast he thought it might burst. He hurriedly took two deep breaths.

“When did you get this tall?” Shen Liu half-closed his eyes, leaning against Qin Mu’s neck, slowly smiling, “Our Little Wood has grown up.”

“…” Qin Mu felt if they kept hugging, he would lose control. Adjusting his position, he held Shen Liu to his right side and said, “Let’s go home.”

Shen Liu leaned on him as they walked toward the roadside, suddenly saying, “Don’t listen to Yan child.”

       “What?” Qin Mu didn’t understand.

“Don’t get to know with those shady guys.”

       Qin Mu laughed wryly.

Less than a minute later, Shen Liu seemed to realise something. “Alright, you’ve grown up. It’s fine to meet people, but you have to tell me beforehand. Also, don’t sleep with anyone easily. And if you do, always use protection. Men and women are different—those places get hurt and infected easily…”

The main street was bustling with people passing by. Qin Mu blushed and grit his teeth, “Did you really have to say this on the main road?”

Shen Liu smiled softly. His lashes drooping to cover half his eyes, looking especially gentle, “Silly kid, I’m afraid you’ll get hurt.”

Qin Mu’s heart seemed to skip a beat; he stopped walking for a moment. He pressed his lips together and whispered, “I’m not a kid anymore.”

Shen Liu seemed to both understand and not understand. He looked at him vaguely for a moment, then muttered, “I want to vomit.”

       Qin Mu: “…”

He was really drunk. He barely made it home, collapsed on the bed, and fell into a deep sleep. Qin Mu took off his dirty clothes, wiped Shen Liu down with a wet towel, and then sat by the bed watching him.

The timed nightlight automatically went off after half an hour, leaving the room pitch black.

In the darkness, Qin Mu bent down and gently kissed his cheek.

Chapter 18

While Shen Liu was still lost in memories, Qin Mu had already begun quietly maneuvering behind the scenes. He contacted his assistant to organize and send over copies of all the available documents. He then called Zhou Yi and asked for help reaching out to a few clients to supplement and verify materials.

When Zhou Yi heard that Qin Mu was physically restricted, he was shocked. “What happened?”

Qin Mu answered honestly, “I was locked up.”

Zhou Yi’s voice turned tense. “By who? Baolijian’s people?”

“If it were them, I wouldn’t be able to call you.”

“Oh, right.” Zhou Yi exhaled in relief. “Then who?”

“Shen Liu,” Qin Mu replied. He had no need to hide anything from his business partner, and Zhou Yi already knew the history between them.

“…What the fvck,” Zhou Yi said, stunned. “You two really are…fated to meet across a thousand miles?”

Qin Mu couldn’t be bothered to banter. “Did you get the contact info I sent?”

“Yeah, I got it.” But Zhou Yi was clearly more interested in the drama. “So what’s going on now? You walked right into the trap and Senior Shen keeping his lover hidden away in a golden house? Is he seeing anyone? Are you two—”

Qin Mu hung up before Zhou Yi could spit out more nonsense. He spent the entire afternoon in the gym instead.

Whenever something troubled him, Qin Mu liked to work out. It burned energy and helped clear his mind. But today, it backfired. The heavy breathing and sweat-drenched clothes didn’t drive out the chaos in his head. The past kept surfacing, no matter how he tried to push it down.

The feeling of losing control over the situation gnawed at him. Qin Mu lay flat on the floor exhausted and his eyes shut in resignation.

At some point, that person had silently taken up residence in his heart and never left.

Back then, Qin Mu had been so naive. He thought that if he were just strong enough, he could overcome anything. But returning to school wasn’t as simple as he had imagined.

The affiliated high school first insisted that only a parent could file the return from leave paperwork. Then, using the excuse that ‘many parents objected’, they dragged their feet on approval. It wasn’t until Shen Liu escalated the matter to the Education Bureau that the school reluctantly agreed to let him back in.

Qin Mu wanted to stay in the dorms, but when teachers asked for their opinions, none of the boys in his class were willing to room with him. Other classes also refused to accommodate him. In the end, he had no choice but to keep living at Shen Liu’s small apartment and commute.

His return was met with anything but a warm welcome. His classmates were cold, either treating him like he didn’t exist or gossiping about him like he was some rare specimen. Qin Mu had mentally prepared himself, but seeing even Han Zhang avoid him still stung.

Soon enough, word spread like wildfire throughout the school about ‘the gay kid that came back’. It was as if a shot of adrenaline had been injected into the otherwise dull campus life. To make things more scandalous and thrilling, students let their imaginations run wild, creating an ever-growing list of shocking rumors,

‘I heard he started that fire himself. He just got out after being locked up.’

‘A friend who lives near him said he beat his parents and got kicked out. Even pulled a knife.’

‘Hey, doesn’t he go to the hospital often? I heard he was r4p3d. Might even have AIDS.’

‘He’s living with a man now. I saw it myself.’

‘Ugh, gross. Is he just giving up on himself completely now?’

       …

People were always full of malice towards those who were different from themselves.

Rumors and silent hostility blanketed the school like a snowstorm, turning it into a frozen lake. Malicious thoughts churned beneath the ice, and countless claws were sharp and restless. It scratched and screeched, as if the moment a crack appeared, they would break through and drag down the lone figure walking above.

It didn’t take long before someone began to test the waters.

One of Qin Mu’s worksheets came back with the words ‘disgusting pervert’ scrawled on it. His missing uniform was found shredded in a trash bin. On cleaning duty, someone intentionally kicked over a bucket of water, and passing students stepped through it, cursing and casting contemptuous glances his way.

The so-called ‘model students’ grew more brazen by the day under Qin Mu’s silence. Some boys catcalled him with vulgar whistles or gave him nicknames so filthy they were hard to repeat, such as ‘sissy’, ‘gigolo’, ‘double-ended plug’, ‘male toilet seat’. Someone spat in his water bottle. Someone else threw his schoolbag into the girls’ bathroom.

Qin Mu had fought back, but one person’s fists couldn’t win against many. When he reported the bullying to his homeroom teacher, all it earned him was a lukewarm lecture directed at the offenders, which only made the retaliation worse. Being singled out in a mob felt like being stranded on a lone island in the middle of the sea, with nowhere to run.

One day, a group of senior athletes cornered Qin Mu in the restroom. The ringleader was Li Xiaomo’s current boyfriend.

Li Xiaomo had cried to her new boyfriend, painting herself as a victim. She claimed Qin Mu had deceived her, taken advantage of her, and even conspired with Han Zhang to beat her. With no basis, the rumors fanned his male aggression into a frenzy. He led his gang to ambush Qin Mu, pinned him down, kicked him, doused him with urine, and even took photos. They posted them on the school bulletin board under the words: ‘Perverts don’t belong in the men’s room’.

Qin Mu had no choice but to return to Shen Liu’s apartment to change clothes. He didn’t want to worry Shen Liu, so he planned to clean up quickly and make it back in time for night study. But as he opened the door, he came face-to-face with Shen Liu, just out of the shower and clearly just back from a game.

There stood Qin Mu, reeking of sweat and urine, eyes flickering with shame and helplessness.

“What happened?” Shen Liu’s expression darkened. “Who did this?”

“It’s nothing. I just… had an accident…” Qin Mu tried to brush it off, but lying in front of Shen Liu had always been hard. His nose tingled, his eyes reddened, and he quickly lowered his head.

“Shower first, then talk,” Shen Liu said, draping his own bath towel over Qin Mu’s head, shielding the tears that had started to fall.

The water poured down, washing away filth and tears.

Qin Mu didn’t know why he would suddenly break down. Maybe it was the soft weight of that perfectly timed towel, maybe it was the worry in Shen Liu’s voice, or perhaps it was simply that one sentence, “Who did this?”

Life was so damn cruel. It cruelly piled bitterness and hardship on his shoulders, forbidding him from hiding, from running, and from even crying out. Just when he had forced himself to be strong and independent like a ‘real adult’, Shen Liu was the only one who still saw him as a kid, offering patience, acceptance, and care. It was like a drop of sweetness in a mouthful of bitterness. It was sweet enough to make him cry.

By the time Qin Mu finished his shower, he had pulled himself back together. Knowing he couldn’t hide this from Shen Liu, he simply told the essentials of what had happened.

Shen Liu was sprawled on the sofa in his usual careless posture, long legs propped up high, a lollipop dangling from his lips. His takeaway from the story went completely off-course, “You had a girlfriend? Was she pretty?”

       Qin Mu: “…”

“Judging from your silence, not pretty,” Shen Liu said, shaking his head like a disappointed parent. “Woody, when people date, they either go for a pretty face or a kind heart. How did you end up with someone ugly and mean? She crawled out of the trash can behind your school at midnight wearing sunglasses?”

Qin Mu’s face turned scarlet. He stood up and ignored him.

       Shen Liu grabbed his arm.

       Qin Mu muttered, “What?”

“My leg’s cramping…” Shen Liu hissed through his teeth. “Help me out, quick.”

“That’s what you get for playing basketball every day,” Qin Mu grumbled, but still took his foot and began stretching and massaging his calf. “Better now?”

       “Nope. Still numb.”

       Qin Mu kept massaging. “Now?”

“Still numb,” Shen Liu said, lounging even more comfortably with eyes closed in bliss.

Qin Mu saw through him at last. With narrowed eyes, he gave Shen Liu’s inner thigh a hard pinch. Shen Liu yelped, sprang up yelling “You little brat, you’re dead!” and lunged at him.

Qin Mu nimbly dodged around the coffee table. Shen Liu was limping slightly and couldn’t catch up. He instead pelted him with couch cushions.

“Come here!” Shen Liu growled through gritted teeth.

Qin Mu shook his head, laughing. “Do I look stupid to you?”

“You’re not stupid, you just go digging for women in the trash can.”

“Uh-oh, are you getting mad again?” Shen Liu grinned. “Oh no, I’m so scared. Our Little Woody can actually get mad? Come on, show your brother what that looks like.”

That did it, Qin Mu pounced on him.

The two of them wrestled on the floor, tangled together, going back and forth. Qin Mu wasn’t as strong as Shen Liu and was also terribly ticklish. After getting pinned to the carpet and mercilessly tickled, he laughed and begged for mercy. “Stop… I give up…”

Shen Liu sat astride him, sneering playfully. “Still gonna throw a tantrum?”

Qin Mu answered obediently, “No more tantrums.”

“Call me good big brother. Let me hear it.”

       “…Good big brother.”

“Good boy.” Shen Liu leaned down, bracing his arms on either side of Qin Mu’s head. “Little Wood…”

       “What?”

“You realize it, don’t you? You don’t push me away anymore.” Shen Liu smiled with squinted eyes.

Qin Mu paused, then flushed slightly and pushed him. “You’re heavy. Get off.”

That afternoon, when Qin Mu left for evening study, Shen Liu put on a black jacket and went out too. By the time Qin Mu got home, Shen Liu hadn’t returned yet.

The next morning, just as Qin Mu entered the classroom, the group of jocks from the day before followed him in. Thinking they were about to beat him up again, Qin Mu clenched his fists and stood up nervously.

Unexpectedly, the group stood in a row, their eyes awkwardly darting around. They then bent at the waist and said in unison, “We’re sorry, Qin Mu.”

Qin Mu was stunned. Looking closer, he saw that they were all bruised, especially the leader—Li Xiaomo’s boyfriend—whose face was black and blue. That guy pulled out a crumpled note from his pocket and started reading it in a lisping and halting voice, likely due to a missing tooth, “We bullied the weak with numbers and strength. We are simply morally… degenerate and have no conscience. It’s as if all our education was eaten by dogs and we did things no decent human should do… We’ve let down our teachers’ guidance, our parents’ hopes, our motherland’s beautiful rivers and mountains, and the title of successors of the new era… We were wrong, and we will never do it again. Please, for the sake of being schoolmates, for the sake of building a great future together… forgive us.”

By this time, most of the class had arrived, and even students from the next class were crowding around the door to watch. The ridiculous speech had everyone trying not to laugh, and they were all struggling to hold it in.

As Qin Mu listened, he gradually pieced it together. This tone, this method… Who else could it be but Shen Liu? He took the apology note and gave them a way out. “Okay.”

When the group quickly shuffled away with lowered heads, Qin Mu sat back down. The more he thought about it, the funnier it became. He couldn’t help but cover his face with his English textbook and laugh.

Later, when Qin Mu went back, he asked Shen Liu, “Did you beat them up?”

Shen Liu, who was squeezing toothpaste onto his brush, put on an innocent face and replied seriously, “Beat who? Don’t go throwing baseless accusations at me. I’m a model citizen. I am pure, upright, and never a fan of violence. I always persuade people with reason.”

Qin Mu knew he wouldn’t get anything out of him.

In the mirror, Shen Liu stood in a tank top with toothpaste foam in his mouth, and a mischievous gleam in his eyes that was lazy and unruly as ever.

But to Qin Mu, he looked just like a superhero out of a Hollywood movie.

And in that moment, he heard the sound of his own heartbeat.

Chapter 46 – Who are you trying to take?” Zhong Weishi asked.

After his virtuous roommate left, Gu Lizhou returned to his room, turned on his computer, and got ready to write for a bit.

Since his left hand wasn’t usable, he had downloaded a voice input tool, connected it to his phone, and used the phone as a microphone to sync content directly to the computer.

He knew this feature had been around since last year, but he had never tried it before. Reciting dialogue alone in an empty room felt a bit weird.

Especially after the editor told him to add more brotherhood scenes, the lines became a lot more melodramatic.

Some sentences already felt embarrassing to type out, and reading them aloud just made it ten times worse.

“His steps were fast as he followed behind Yu Hao. ‘Captain Yu, I’ve already figured out their deal location. It’s at the South Bay Pier. I swear I can take them down! Trust me! If I fail, you can punish me however you want.’”

“His undercover identity had long been exposed. Yu Hao suddenly turned around. ‘You’re going to take them down? Do you believe I’ll take you right here’ …ah, uh!”

The door was suddenly pushed open, and his final word came out in a broken pitch, the ending trembled.

His heart skipped a beat.

Zhong Weishi was standing in the doorway, staring at him blankly, his face full of confusion.

The shame of getting caught voice-inputting his lines was no less than being caught watching p0rn by your family. A suffocating wave of embarrassment overwhelmed him.

“What are you doing? Who are you trying to take?” Zhong Weishi asked.

Gu Lizhou froze for a second before quickly locking his screen. He stammered, “I-I… I was practicing storytelling.”

As soon as he said it, he regretted it. That excuse couldn’t be more absurd.

Zhong Weishi wore a look that screamed “what the hell are you hiding,” and suspiciously asked, “You’re not schizophrenic, are you? Talking to yourself like that?”

Gu Lizhou wasn’t sure what Zhong Weishi had heard at the door, but just thinking about the two lines he’d read aloud made him want to crawl into a hole. He quickly changed the subject: “Weren’t you headed to an audition? Why are you back?”

“I forgot my subway card,” Zhong Weishi said.

“Oh,” Gu Lizhou finally recovered and lifted his hand to check the time. “It’s already eight. Didn’t you say you had an appointment at eight thirty?”

“fvck, fvck, fvck…” Zhong Weishi took off running.

Gu Lizhou walked over to the balcony and leaned on the railing. He saw a figure dart out of the building, and had a feeling Zhong Weishi would probably look back.

Sure enough, the little brat waved toward Unit 301 while running.

Gu Lizhou waved back and laughed.

After going back inside, he logged into the backend of Xinghe Century to take a glance. From the moment he released the synopsis for his new story last night until now, it had reached exactly fifteen thousand bookmarks. Considering he hadn’t been active in years, that number already met his expectations.

He wrote “Long time no see” on a sticky note.

Took a picture, posted it on Weibo with a link to the new work. The comment section exploded instantly.

An hour later, the bookmarks rose past twenty thousand.

The data proved he hadn’t truly faded into obscurity.

The only other person monitoring the numbers as closely as he was was his bald editor.

[Cat Puff Bell]: Looks like our Teacher Wanli’s sword is still sharp.

[Wanlizhou]: ……

[Wanlizhou]: I saw your update. Your wife’s pregnant with your second kid?

[Cat Puff Bell]: Yeah, heihei. Get that red envelope ready.

[Wanlizhou]: Congrats. Didn’t expect you to still have it in you, old man ah.

[Cat Puff Bell]: ……

Reality had taught him one lesson: even if you’re bored out of your mind, never pick a fight with a writer.

On the coffee table in the living room was Xie Yun’s business card. Gu Lizhou casually looked up the company online. It had been established just over two years ago. While they’d put out a fair number of film and television works, only one time-travel period drama had really become a hit.

Xie Yun was originally a writer, 29 this year. The drama currently in pre-production, “Secrets from the Old Days”, was based on a romance novel she had written early in her career and had received a fair amount of praise.

Who would’ve thought that this seemingly gentle and cheerful young woman was actually quite a powerhouse. Gu Lizhou now saw her in a new light.

Maybe in Zhong Weishi’s eyes, he himself didn’t seem like much of a writer either.

A couple of days ago, Cheng Yue had chatted with him on WeChat about the talent show. The open auditions were scheduled for July. If Zhong Weishi took a drama job now, that’d leave just over four months before July. Time would be tight.

But he knew this was the best opportunity Zhong Weishi had ever had. If he objected now to him taking the role, the kid would probably be really disappointed.

He went back to his room and messaged Cheng Yue.

[Stubborn Scrap Iron]: How long will it take to get the results of the open auditions?

[Cheng Yue]: Around two months or so. Our program officially airs in October. I’ll send you the online registration link when it’s ready. Don’t forget to sign him up ah.

[Stubborn Scrap Iron]: Thanks.

[Cheng Yue]: What’s there to thank me for? Wishing your precious son a brilliant future.

Gu Lizhou chuckled, then, seeing the time was about right, sent a message to Zhong Weishi.

— How was the audition?

The message came half an hour later. Zhong Weishi sent him a photo of the contract.

— They want to sign me!!!!!!!!!!

— Male lead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before Gu Lizhou could even reply, his phone rang. Zhong Weishi had called him directly: “Did you see my message? They decided to sign me!! I’m the male lead! I’m playing this badass high jumper!”

His voice was nearly a roar, mixed with background noise and subway announcements pouring into Gu Lizhou’s ears. Gu Lizhou laughed and said, “Congratulations, ah. Dinner’s on me tonight, we’ll celebrate.”

“No, no, no! I’m treating you! I’m treating everyone!”

Zhong Weishi came home with two sample contracts. One was an actor employment contract, and the other was an artist agency contract.

In other words, beyond just this project, Qianhong wanted to sign Zhong Weishi as a full-time artist.

The second contract was out of Gu Li Zhou’s expectation.

“Are you planning to sign with their company?”

“I don’t know, that’s why I came back to ask you to give me some advice.” Zhong Weishi downed a mouthful of cool water.

Once he signed with a production company, he’d officially become one of their artists. The upside was having a team to manage him, and for roles in the company’s productions, their in-house artists would naturally be prioritized. The downside was the loss of freedom.

Many agencies didn’t allow their artists to take on jobs privately. All earnings from commercial events, TV and film roles, and advertisements had to be split with the company based on a set ratio.

Qianhong’s offer was a 50-50 split.

Signing with Qianhong meant Zhong Weishi could no longer join the talent show, and would lose any chance to sign with Tianyao. And in terms of industry influence, Qianhong was like an egg going up against a stone when compared to Tianyao.

The gap in strength was stark.

Gu Lizhou quickly brought up the talent show to Zhong Weishi. “If you sign with Qianhong now, the upside is that your future path will be more certain. But at the same time, you’ll be giving up a lot of opportunities. This show is a collaboration between Tianyao Media and the most popular streaming platform right now. The open auditions are expected to start in July, and the whole point is to discover new talent. I think maybe you should think it over a bit more?”

“No need.”

Gu Lizhou was stunned.

“I’m not signing,” Zhong Weishi smiled. “The whole reason you’re telling me all this is because you hope I can go farther, right? Otherwise, you would’ve already congratulated me and told me to sign. I trust you.”

“A promising kid.” Gu Lizhou smiled and ruffled his hair. “But don’t trust me, trust yourself.”

Truth be told, to survive in the entertainment industry, talent, looks, and hard work were the basics. If someone had one of the three, they could scr4p3 by. Two would open more doors. But people who had all three were extremely rare because luck was also an essential ingredient.

Especially in the current traffic-driven era, new-generation idols were sprouting like mushrooms after rain. Whether one could last until the end heavily depended on luck.

Some people had the looks and the skill but lacked public appeal. No matter how hard they worked, it went to waste. Others had great looks but terrible character—sooner or later, they’d fall from grace.

Fate may appear unpredictable, yet everything is subtly interconnected.

Gu Lizhou carefully read through the actor employment contract that Zhong Weishi had brought back twice and didn’t find any loopholes.

The web drama had 24 episodes in total. The kickoff ceremony was scheduled for March 6, with a projected filming period of 90 days.

Gu Lizhou did the math and then made a call to Cheng Yue.

“How long does it usually take for a web drama to go from wrap-up to airing?”

“That’s hard to say. It depends on the type of drama and how fast the post-production team is. Once everything’s done, it still has to go through the higher-ups for approval. If the content’s sensitive, it might even get cut. I’ve seen the fastest team wrap things up in three months. The slowest? Years, and it still didn’t air.”

“It’s just a regular campus inspirational idol drama. Nothing sensitive.”

“Then it should be fine. Campus dramas are pretty quick to edit too. The main thing is whether the team’s capable. Why are you suddenly asking about this?” Cheng Yue asked.

“My son’s about to take on a web drama. This won’t affect his participation in the show later, right?”

That son came out a little too naturally. Sitting next to him, Zhong Weishi glared at him and shot him a middle finger.

“That depends on the quality of the web drama. If it’s good and gets popular, it can instantly boost the actor and director’s visibility. But if it’s bad, well, you know the consequences. In serious cases, it could hurt an artist’s future. Before signing, make sure to understand the story well. If there’s anything unclear, talk to the screenwriter.”

Gu Lizhou looked up the original novel online and finished it in two hours. The plot was tight, decently written, and full of highlights. Both the male and female leads were high jump athletes, supporting each other through ups and downs. A light and sweet campus life story with an inspirational tone.

The site rating was a solid 9.2, mostly appealing to a female audience.

Gu Lizhou stared at Zhong Weishi for a while. The latter got a little flustered, turned away, and switched on the TV. “Why are you staring at me?”

That face, that physique definitely had the potential. But just thinking about this kid stepping into the public eye stirred a mix of emotions in his fatherly heart.

“Want some?” Zhong Weishi offered him a slice of apple on a fork.

Gu Lizhou took a bite and continued researching.

Looking at Qianhong’s past projects, the average time from opening ceremony to official release was about seven to eight months. Conservatively estimating, this new web drama should be out by the end of the year.

If the timing worked out just right, it would coincide with the peak of the talent show. No matter what, it would at least help him ride a wave of popularity.

Even an outsider like Gu Lizhou understood how crucial public exposure was for a newly debuted artist. If the web drama gained traction, it would definitely be a boost for Zhong Weishi.

Let’s hope fate favors him.

Zhong Weishi turned around and asked, “Do you think if I don’t sign with their company, they’ll still let me do the drama?”

“They probably will. If not, just call Xie Yun, I’ll talk for you.”

“What are you going to say ah?”

Gu Lizhou motioned with his lips, “Go on, call her. Put it on speaker.”

Since this concerned his son’s future, Gu Lizhou had already done a deep dive into Qianhong Entertainment. The company mainly handled film and TV investment and production, while its newly established talent agency had only signed a handful of artists.

Even the leads in last year’s hit historical drama were signed under different agencies.

With that precedent and his own insight as a writer, Gu Lizhou had confidence in how this phone call would play out.

Every writer wants their work to be presented in the best possible way. If that weren’t the case, Xie Yun wouldn’t be so hands-on with the drama adaptation herself.

There was less than a month left before filming started, and she was still scouting for the leads. Gu Lizhou guessed the most likely scenario: the actor she had her eye on didn’t quite match her ideal image for the role. He was in a pending state. If she didn’t find someone better in time, she’d settle for the next best thing.

If the actor was willing to sign with her agency, she’d naturally weigh the added value and make a decision. So she played a lowball strategy.

She slashed the actor’s listed salary in the company contract.

Zhong Weishi clutched his chest with both hands, heart aching like it was bleeding.

Sure enough, after some discussion, Xie Yun gave a clear response: “I’ll have someone draft a new contract and send it to your email. If there are no issues, come to the office tomorrow to sign it.”

“I’ll cover the other half they cut from your pay. Just think of it as household grocery money.” Gu Lizhou said

“Where’d you get so much money? Are you some rich second generation?”

“Nope. My dad’s a university professor, and you’ve met my mom. Because she’s too foolish, every time she starts a business it either she loses money or she gets scammed. I have money because I’m smart.”

“…”

“You don’t believe me?”

“Then tell me how you made your fortune.”

Gu Lizhou rested his cheek on his palm. “I told you before ah. Wanlizhou is me. I’m Wanlizhou.”

“Pfft, again with that.” Zhong Weishi didn’t believe it at all.

Gu Lizhou raised an eyebrow. “Let me ask you. If you had to choose between Wanlizhou and me as a roommate, who would you pick?”

“Hmm…” Zhong Weishi’s eyes rolled upward as he drifted into a little fantasy.

“You hesitated.”

“Huh?”

“You like him more, don’t you? Hah. All this time we’ve spent together, and I still lose to a writer you’ve never even met.”

Zhong Weishi had a sudden idea and pointed at him. “Didn’t you just say the two of you are the same person? Why are you making me choose?”

“…”

Forget it.

Why bother getting jealous of himself?

“I heard making games is really profitable ah. Like, one launch and you can live off it for three years. Did you make a game once and now you’re just taking a three-year break?” Zhong Weishi asked.

“More than three years. It’s enough to feed you for a lifetime.” Gu Lizhou’s tone was light.

That immediately piqued Zhong Weishi’s interest. “Is making games hard? I saw Qiangzi is still doing game livestreams. That seems to make decent money too.”

“Not hard,” Gu Lizhou glanced at him, “but you’re IQ can’t.”

Zhong Weishi slapped the table and huffed, “I choose to live with Wanlizhou!”

“……”

Ever since Gu Lizhou moved into Unit 301, Zhong Weishi’s quality of life had significantly improved. First off, the rent was now halved, and he no longer had to pay for utilities. Second, he no longer had to steal Wi-Fi. For the usual expenses, Gu Lizhou bought them all—mainly because he couldn’t stand what Zhong Weishi picked out, which were either low-quality or pirated.

The cheap Shujiajia soap in the bathroom was replaced with fruit-scented disinfectant hand wash. Blue Sunlight became “Blue Moonlight.” The expired ice cream in the fridge got tossed out, replaced with fresh meat.

Every time Zhong Weishi opened the fridge and saw the mountain of fruits, snacks, and drinks, he felt like life was just amazing.

He even found time to buy himself a new phone.

When Gu Lizhou came back from the supermarket, he saw him sitting on the couch downloading apps.

“Yo, new phone ah?”

“Yeah.” Zhong Weishi grinned happily and nodded. “Next time you hear someone’s collecting old phones, help me flag them down. Even a stainless steel washbasin would be a good trade.”

“…Sure.” Gu Lizhou weighed the bag in his hand. “I bought strawberries. You want some?”

“Of course, ah. I’m not picky,” Zhong Weishi replied without even lifting his head.

“Then go wash them,” Gu Lizhou said, placing the bag on the table.

Zhong Weishi pouted.

Being rich is being the grandfather.

Gu Lizhou chuckled, picked up his new phone, and gave it a glance. Weibo had just been logged in.

Tens of thousands of posts, the screen flooded with “hahahahahahahaha”…

Aside from a few Weibo V, he’d never seen anyone’s page with that many posts.

Gu Lizhou took out his own phone, searched for his Weibo ID, and quietly clicked Follow.

His finger accidentally brushed over the private messages, only then did he discover that the little guy had once sent him a private message.

Dated two years ago.

[-Wishiws-]: Jiayou, ah! (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧ I’ll always look forward to your next book!

Gu Lizhou smiled faintly.

Five minutes later.

The two of them were curled up on the couch, snacking on strawberries while watching a drama.

Suddenly, Zhong Weishi shouted, “Holy shit!” and jumped up from the couch, stomping his feet and screaming, “Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah——”

Gu Lizhou held back a laugh and asked calmly, “What happened?”

“Wan-wan-wan-wan-wan-wan—” Zhong Weishi clutched his phone, tongue-tied from excitement, “Wanlizhou replied to me! He sent me a private message!!! Oh my god, ya!!!”

He rubbed his eyes hard, and after confirming he wasn’t seeing things, started running laps around the couch, screaming again, “Wanlizhou has a new book out! Oh my god, yeah! Why am I only seeing this today? I’m such a terrible fan!”

He frantically liked, forwarded, and recommended the post like a madman, then hugged his phone and rolled around on the couch. “He replied to me! He actually replied to me! He actually reads private messages! Tell me—don’t you think this is fate or something?”

“More like cursed fate.”

Seeing how utterly uninterested Gu Lizhou looked, Zhong Weishi grabbed his head and pressed it down. “Look! Look at the private message he sent me!”

“It’s just a ‘thanks.’ You’re this excited over two words?”

“You don’t get it! He’s my male god, you know? Male god! Forget it, you wouldn’t understand even if I explained.” Zhong Weishi was on cloud nine, taking a screenshot of the private message and showing it off across all his social media platforms.

But the very next second, he ended up in a full-blown brawl on the couch with his so-called male god over the biggest strawberry in the bowl.

“Gu Lizhou, you fvcking spread your hand! I touched it first!” He yanked at Gu Lizhou’s hair with all his strength.

Gu Lizhou stuck out his tongue, gave the strawberry a quick lick, then held it out to him. “Still want it?”

“You’re disgusting! My male god would never act like this.”

Gu Lizhou couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re really something.”

Author’s Note:

I, Gu Lizhou, am crazy enough that I even get jealous of myself.

Chapter 17

The application for changing the guardian was rejected again, and Qin Mu was taken home by his parents.

Shen Liu went to see him at home several times. The Qin family was filled with a kind of stiff harmony.

Qin Aihua and Zheng Yan watched their son standing in front of the court in the dock, and after he told them everything he had suffered in a trembling voice with great restraint, they finally believed it about 70% and lowered their heads in regret belatedly.

Fortunately, the son eventually returned. On the one hand, the two wanted to repair the precarious parent-child relationship, and on the other hand, they also sought to use this as a means to soothe their guilt; their attitudes changed significantly. Zheng Yan stopped swearing when she was not at home, and Qin Aihua no longer had a cold face. For the first time since their marriage, the two put aside their past grudges and joined hands to create a ‘harmonious and loving’ family atmosphere for their children. They treated Qin Mu with a stern and reserved attitude, carefully caring for his emotions, not mentioning what happened in the past, no longer controlling him, and avoiding all topics of sexual orientation. Still, it seemed more awkward because of the deliberateness.

What puzzled them was that Qin Mu did not buy their act. This lost and found son was like a polite and cold sojourner, actively avoiding intersections with them. Except for meal time, Qin Mu either stayed in the room or went to the library. He would greet them when they entered and left the house, wash the dishes after meals, do his own laundry, and tidy up the room, but he would not show any intimacy to them, nor would he say unnecessary words or smile.

Qin Aihua and Zheng Yan couldn’t understand why Qin Mu was like this, but Shen Liu understood very well, because his relationship with Shen Lan was also gradually fading.

Children’s feelings are delicate and fragile things, like blue and white porcelain that needs to be carefully cared for. However, many parents don’t care. They always smash everything with their self-righteous hammers and then blame their children for being too sensitive, too caring, too stingy, and too vulnerable. Qin Mu has completely lost trust in his parents, and this parent-child relationship has long been in name only.

Shen Liu regularly takes Qin Mu to see a psychologist every week. He knew that Qin Mu had a great yearning for K, so he often took him to K University, visited the library, and enrolled him in a few interesting elective classes, trying his best to ignite his passion for life.

The application to change Qin Mu’s guardian had once again been rejected. Qin Mu was taken back home by his parents.

Shen Liu had visited him at home a few times. The Qin household was filled with a stiff and forced harmony.

After seeing their son stand before the court and recount all he had suffered with a trembling voice. He tried hard to be steady. Qin Aihua and Zheng Yan finally believed that at least 70-80% of it was true and hung their heads in belated regret.

Fortunately, their son had come back in the end. On one hand, they wanted to mend the fragile parent-child relationship; on the other, they hoped to ease the guilt that had been festering in their hearts. Their attitude had shifted noticeably. Zheng Yan no longer cursed and grumbled at home, and Qin Aihua stopped wearing a perpetually cold expression. For the first time since their marriage, the two of them had set aside their past grievances and joined hands to create a ‘harmonious and loving’ family atmosphere for their child. They treated Qin Mu with a clumsy and awkward gentleness, tiptoeing around his emotions. They avoided bringing up the past, no longer tried to control his every move, and carefully steered clear of any discussions about sexual orientation. However, their deliberate restraint only made things more unnatural.

What puzzled them was that Qin Mu didn’t buy into any of it. The son they had lost and regained now acted like a polite but distant sojourner, consciously avoiding any interactions with them. Other than mealtimes, Qin Mu either stayed in his room or went to the library. He greeted them when they came or went, did the dishes after meals, washed his own clothes, and kept his room tidy. But he never showed any warmth, never said anything unnecessary, and never smiled.

Qin Aihua and Zheng Yan couldn’t understand why Qin Mu was like this, but Shen Liu understood all too well. This was exactly how things had gradually unraveled between him and Shen Lan.

A child’s emotions were always delicate and fragile, like porcelain that needed to be handled with great care. Yet many parents didn’t care at all. They used what they believed were righteous hammers to smash everything to pieces, then turned around and blamed the child for being too sensitive, too particular, too petty, too fragile. Qin Mu had completely lost trust in his parents. That parent-child relationship had long since become one in name only.

Shen Liu took Qin Mu to see a psychologist regularly every week. He knew Qin Mu was drawn to K University, so he often brought him there to walk around the campus, hang out in the library, sit in on interesting elective classes, and did his best to rekindle Qin Mu’s passion for life.

Qin Mu was also working hard. He took his medication on time, forced himself to live by the routine prescribed by his doctor, got up early to exercise and ran at night to tire himself out, leaving no room for aimless thoughts and that was how he combated his sleep disorder. He endured and waited for adulthood.

In this way, the three members of the Qin family, like trees in a forest exhibiting ‘crown shyness1a natural phenomenon where the crowns(top branches and leaves) of a fully grown trees avoid touching each other, forming visible gaps in the canopy.‘. Each drew invisible boundaries between themselves and the others, achieving a strange kind of peace.

This superficial calm lasted until Qin Mu’s eighteenth birthday. Qin Aihua had gone out of his way to buy him an expensive pair of running shoes, learning his son’s shoe size for the first time. Zheng Yan had ordered a twelve-inch cream cake and cooked a tableful of dishes Qin Mu liked. Worried the atmosphere would be too cold, they suggested he invite some friends over to liven things up.

By dinnertime, the only guest to arrive was Shen Liu. He had come on purpose because he knew what Qin Mu was about to do.

The meal felt like the quiet before a storm, filled with a terrifying stillness. After everyone had set down their chopsticks, Qin Mu placed a kraft paper envelope on the table and slowly spoke.

“Dad, Mom, I’m an adult now. From today on, I’ve decided to live independently. I’ve found a place to stay, my things are packed, and I’ll be moving out tonight. This is the compensation the court awarded me. I don’t have an income yet, and living on my own requires some expenses, so I’ve taken five thousand from it. The remaining thirty thousand is for you. They say the kindness of being raised can’t be measured in money, but this is all I can do for now. Once I start working, I’ll send you money regularly. I can’t predict the amount yet, but I won’t go back on my word.”

“What did you say… Where are you going?” Zheng Yan stared at him in disbelief, stammering. “You… you’re moving out?”

       “Yes,” Qin Mu answered.

Qin Aihua’s face turned grim. He fixed his eyes on his son and asked, “What do you want now? Are you rebelling? You suffered at that school, so what? It’s all our fault? If you had just studied properly and hadn’t gotten involved in that disgusting gay stuff, your mother wouldn’t have panicked and sent you to that kind of place. Wasn’t she doing it for your own good?” The more he spoke, the angrier he became. “Whose kid didn’t grow up getting beaten and scolded? And it wasn’t even me or your mom who beat you. Did you really have to take us to court to get even? Fine, you sued us. And after you came back, we’ve been nothing but careful around you, living by your mood, almost burning incense and worshipping you. Still not enough? Tell me, what kind of kid treats his parents like enemies and can’t even be bothered to speak to them? Who threatens to run away from home every time something happens? Someone says a few words and you’re ready to leave. What do you think you’re capable of, huh? You think you’re going to make something of yourself by following those people?”

In his fury, Qin Aihua even dragged Shen Liu into his rant.

Shen Liu raised his eyebrows and was visibly annoyed, but swallowed the sarcasm that had risen to his throat. He was never one to hold back with his words, but before entering the house, Qin Mu had told him that no matter what happened, he wanted to handle it himself. So Shen Liu could only force himself to stay silent, silently accepting the label of ‘instigator’.

Qin Mu seemed to have expected everything in advance. He calmly asked, “Then, what is it that you want from me?”

“Bullshit! We raised you, and now you think we’re scheming to get something from you?” Qin Aihua slammed the table in fury, making the bowls and plates clatter from the impact.

Qin Mu looked up at him. “Now that we’ve come to this, why don’t we lay everything out in the open? Ever since I was old enough to understand, I’ve tried my best to live according to your expectations. I was afraid of your fights, the cold wars, the smashing of pots and dishes. I lived every day in fear and anxiety. I studied desperately because when my grades were good, Mom would be happy, and the atmosphere at home would ease up a little. I obeyed everything. I didn’t make friends because I wasn’t allowed to, didn’t read extracurricular books, didn’t listen to music. That was how I tried to please you. I was supposed to be a perfect creation shaped by so-called ‘motherly love.’ But unfortunately, this creation turned out flawed.”

His fingers resting on his lap were curled tightly and trembled slightly from the strain as he struggled to suppress his emotions and keep his tone steady. “My sexual orientation became an indelible stain in your eyes, and so you discarded me like a defective product. In that hell, I kept asking myself: Who am I? What am I supposed to become? Eventually, I figured it out. What my mother loved and wanted was just a false illusion. That wasn’t me—it was a projection she desperately constructed to compensate for her failed life. But I can’t bring myself to hate her, because I understand why she became that way. And I know who made her that way.”

His gaze shifted to Qin Aihua. His breath quickened, and a flush of suppressed red tinged the corners of his eyes. “I remember back in elementary school, there was a composition assignment called ‘My Dad.’ I held the pen for a long time and couldn’t write a single word, because in my mind, my father was only someone who sat in front of the TV with crossed legs, drinking and eating peanuts. But I still got a high score on that essay because I wrote about my imaginary dad—someone who would take me on outings, play ball with me, care for me and protect me. I never understood why you would rather waste energy arguing than do a bit of housework, why you dumped all the burdens of life onto her shoulders, why you completely ignored me. And more than that, I couldn’t understand if you don’t like kids, why have one? If there’s no love in the marriage, why not divorce? Later, I understood. It’s because you care about saving your face. You are afraid that if you lack one of your wife and son, others will look down on you. But before you praise other people’s kids, shouldn’t you ask yourself if you’ve ever been a decent father like them?”

“You… ungrateful little bastard!” Qin Aihua exploded with rage, standing up and raising his hand for a slap.

Qin Mu didn’t move. His fists were clenched tightly, but in that moment, he suddenly felt a sense of relief.

He thought, Go ahead. Hit me. Maybe it’s better if you do.

But before the slap could land, Shen Liu caught Qin Aihua’s hand. The young man said coldly, “If you’ve got something to say, then say it. But if you hit him, I won’t stand by.”

“And who the hell do you think you are?!” Qin Aihua tried to jerk his arm free, but he wasn’t strong enough to break free from the younger man’s grip. His face flushed with anger. “Let go!”

Shen Liu shoved him back forcefully before releasing his grip. Qin Aihua stumbled and fell back into his chair. Humiliated and furious, he said, “Get out! If you want to leave, go! I’ll just pretend I never raised a son like you!”

Qin Mu stood up. Zheng Yan rushed over, grabbed his arm, and sobbed, “No! I don’t agree! You can’t move out! You’re still so young and you can’t possibly live on your own! Just stay home, okay? From now on, you can do whatever you want, I won’t try to control you anymore, alright? Everything I did was for you… I really did it all for your own good…”

Qin Mu was being shaken by her, his eyes half-lowered, as if they held two hollow voids. “You say it was all for my good, but why didn’t I get better? You used those words as an excuse every time you hurt me. Don’t you think that’s cruel? I’ll never become the person you want me to be. If you’re so disappointed in me, then take this life back.”

He picked up the fruit knife on the table and pulled it out of its sheath.

Shen Liu immediately grabbed his wrist and said firmly, “Qin Mu, don’t do anything stupid. Let go.”

The sharp blade glinted silver. Qin Mu stared at Zheng Yan and asked, “Is this what you want?”

Zheng Yan was terrified and shook her head, crying, “Put it down… please put it down…”

Qin Mu let go. The fruit knife clattered onto the table. Zheng Yan collapsed to the ground and sobbed uncontrollably.

“Crazy. You’re all crazy!” Qin Aihua stormed out, face dark, slamming the door behind him.

Qin Mu quietly turned back into the house, picked up his packed suitcase, and walked out the door amidst Zheng Yan’s sobs. Shen Liu helped him load the suitcase into the taxi. Noticing that Qin Mu kept staring at the window, Shen Liu patted his shoulder and said, “I’ll go back and say a few words.”

Back inside, he crouched down in front of the still-crying Zheng Yan and said, “Auntie, after being locked up in that place for so long, he’s developed some psychological issues. The doctor also recommended that he live in a new environment, so leaving home isn’t a bad thing. I’ll take care of him, so you don’t have to worry too much. Some things just need time to heal. The bond between you and your son isn’t beyond repair, but right now, you need to wait for him to heal first.”

He wrote down a landline number for her. “This is how you can contact me. Call if you need anything.”

Zheng Yan nodded numbly, wiped her tears, and accepted the number. Only then did Shen Liu leave with peace of mind.

The engine roared to life, and that familiar window grew smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror. Qin Mu seemed to see a silent young boy standing at the window, sorrowfully watching him leave.

It was his younger self saying goodbye to him.

On the day he became an adult, Qin Mu severed ties with his birth family and set out on an independent path. From that moment on, he had the right to make his own choices and the duty to bear all the consequences.

Fortunately, he was not alone. Shen Liu was by his side.

Qin Mu hadn’t brought much; all he brought were a few books and some changes of clothes. Shen Liu bought him the daily essentials. When Qin Mu said he would pay him back, Shen Liu scoffed, “With what money? You barely have enough for tuition and living expenses.”

Qin Mu had no choice but to let it go and silently noted down every expense. He was planning to return to school once the term began. Shen Liu was worried he would face discrimination if he went back to his old school and tried to convince him to transfer.

“The Affiliated High School has strong teachers, good facilities, and a high college acceptance rate. It’s one of the best in all of K City. Besides, I’m already used to how things are taught there,” Qin Mu said, sitting cross-legged on the carpet, flipping through a math book. “A secret can’t be kept forever. Even if I transfer, word about me being gay will spread eventually. No matter where I go, people will talk. I’ll just ignore it, it’s not a big deal.”

Shen Liu, who was cramming calculus on the sofa, teased, “Pretty open-minded, aren’t you, Little Wood? You’ve missed so many classes, think you can keep up? Want your gege to tutor you?”

Qin Mu gave him a sidelong glance. “How about you go take a shower first? You stink of sweat.”

“Tsk, getting bold now, huh? Complaining about your big brother! Taste the wrath of my invisible athlete’s foot!” Shen Liu lifted his leg and stuck his foot toward him.

Qin Mu smacked it away and played along, “Dragon-Subduing Palm, one out of ten hits so far.”

Shen Liu, now fully in play mode, hooked his arm around Qin Mu’s neck from behind. “Great Locking Hand!”

Qin Mu suddenly gripped his arm tightly, his voice trembling. “…Let go.”

Shen Liu didn’t move. Qin Mu struggled hard and flung him onto the sofa. After catching his breath, he lowered his head and muttered, “Sorry.”

“What’s there to apologise for?” Shen Liu replied casually. “Didn’t you slap me last time? Being able to hold back this time is progress.”

Feeling guilty, Qin Mu tried to lighten the mood with a small smile. “What do you want to eat? I’ll make it.”

       “Diced stir-fry, please.”

Once Qin Mu had gone into the kitchen, Shen Liu quietly rubbed the back of his head where he had hit it earlier and sighed: a prickly little creature like this really is hard to care for.

Chapter 48

Jiang Tongyan could finally hold his head high. Only God knew how many years of grievance he had swallowed since meeting Shen Huiming.

But now, the curse was broken. Jiang Tongyan had his sweetheart in his arms, and he could finally show off in front of Shen Huiming with pride.

Shen Huiming listened to the voice on the other end of the line and glanced at his phone, double-checking that it really was Jiang Tongyan calling.

“An absolute darling?” No matter how he heard it, the phrase felt a bit much.

       Had Jiang Tongyan been possessed?

“What? You free tonight?” Jiang Tongyan said smugly. “Don’t tell me, you’re scared?”

Shen Huiming laughed. “Me? Scared of you?”

He returned to his office and checked the calendar. “I’ll book the restaurant. I’ll message you.”

“No problem,” Jiang Tongyan added purposefully, “Book somewhere nice. Don’t you dare shortchange my boyfriend.”

Leaning back in his chair, Shen Huiming chuckled and cursed him affectionately before they hung up.

Cheng Sen gave him a look of disgust. “You really are the picture of a petty man finally getting his moment.”

“This is me being restrained. You wouldn’t understand.” He really wouldn’t. Cheng Sen had no idea what Jiang Tongyan had been through. All these years… Every time he liked someone, it ended in failure. And each of them ended up with Shen Huiming. His love life had been one long string of defeat. No wonder he had trauma.

But now? Now he was finally basking under the sun of liberation, so how could he not show off a little?

Jiang Tongyan downed the tea that Qian Xiaoke had brewed. After all, it wasn’t just any tea—this was tea made by his boyfriend. Every drop of water, every tea leaf, was soaked with affection. Not a drop should be wasted!

After draining his cup, Jiang Tongyan stood up to leave.

“I’m going upstairs to have a look.” The upstairs office was already under renovation. Since Cheng Sen had agreed to assign Qian Xiaoke as his receptionist, he had to pay close attention to the setup.

       His personal motives were overflowing.

“I’ll go too,” Cheng Sen said. The two of them walked out together, just in time to see Qian Xiaoke signing for a delivery.

Jiang Tongyan walked past without interrupting, but in his heart, he sighed: A man focused on work is so adorable!

Cheng Sen said, “How did I never realise you were such a hopeless romantic?”

“Because I was never in relationship before!” Jiang Tongyan was surprisingly self-aware.

Cheng Sen laughed. “Can’t you be a little more composed? You’re acting like you’ve lost your mind over a relationship.”

“I’m in the honeymoon phase! You expect me to be calm? That wouldn’t be love!” Jiang Tongyan side-eyed him. “And don’t say anything about me. Who was it, huh? You fell for a flight attendant and started flying around the world every other week. You of all people have the nerve to say that I’m a love-brained person?”

Cheng Sen gave up talking, he couldn’t argue.

They reached the upstairs floor and walked around to inspect the renovation progress. Jiang Tongyan even took out his phone to carefully photograph the front desk from every angle so he could show them to Qian Xiaoke later and ask for feedback. If there was anything he didn’t like, Jiang Tongyan would have someone fix it right away.

Once they were done, they left for a meeting. Though the office space wasn’t ready, the new project had already begun.

And while Jiang Tongyan was very much love-drunk, he wasn’t slacking at work either. His boyfriend Qian Xiaoke was a career-focused man and he couldn’t afford to drag him down.

The meeting of the new project team lasted for several hours. When it was finally over, Jiang Tongyan checked his phone and saw that Shen Huiming had messaged him long ago.

Restaurant booked. Dinner at eight. Don’t be late.

He glanced at the time. It was 5:10 PM. It wasn’t long before Qian Xiaoke would get off work.

So he headed back with Cheng Sen and sat in Chairman Cheng’s office, sipping tea while waiting for his boyfriend to clock out.

Cheng Sen sighed, “I really should ban office romances.”

“Too late,” Jiang Tongyan grinned. “I’m a partner now. Once you reassign him to my department, you don’t get a say.”

Cheng Sen snorted. He grabbed his keys, and headed out.

“You wait, then. When you leave, have Qian Xiaoke lock up for you.”

“Go ahead, go ahead,” Jiang Tongyan waved him off. “Let me wait quietly for my love.”

Cheng Sen looked at him like he had lost his mind, chuckled a few times, and walked away.

Meanwhile, Qian Xiaoke had gotten unexpectedly busy near the end of the day. A batch of outgoing deliveries had to be sorted for the evening pickup. By the time he finished, it was exactly 6 PM.

He looked up and there was Jiang Tongyan, leaning against Cheng Sen’s office door and smiling at him.

His eyes practically had pink hearts in them.

Qian Xiaoke felt a little embarrassed being stared at like that, but couldn’t help smiling sweetly as he sneaked a glance at Jiang Tongyan. Before he could say anything, coworkers from other departments began leaving for the day and habitually said goodbye to Qian Xiaoke on their way out.

Qian Xiaoke was well-liked. He chatted with anyone who passed by and was practically the company’s mascot.

By the time he finished seeing off his enthusiastic coworkers, Jiang Tongyan had already walked up beside him.

He was holding Qian Xiaoke’s puffer jacket in his arms, and opened it up, “Put this on.”

Qian Xiaoke’s cheeks turned rosy pink. As he slipped one arm into the sleeve, he mumbled shyly, “Come on, don’t do that here… What if someone sees? So embarrassing!”

Jiang Tongyan helped him into the coat and even pulled his bunny-ear knit hat over his head. “So what if they see? It’s not like we’re doing anything shady.”

He wanted the whole world to know he and Qian Xiaoke were dating.

“No way!” Qian Xiaoke raised a hand to adjust the hat and gave his little ‘bunny ears’ a quick pat.

That tiny motion tugged hard at Jiang Tongyan’s heartstrings. It was like a little paw patting directly on his soul and it stirred his already smitten heart even more.

Completely unaware of his boyfriend’s inner turmoil, Qian Xiaoke zipped up his coat and said earnestly, “This is a workplace, we should act professional.”

Jiang Tongyan grinned. “Okay, we’ll be professional.”

Then, taking full advantage of the fact that no one was around, he suddenly leaned in and kissed Qian Xiaoke on the cheek.

       It was warm and soft.

       He was obsessed.

Right after that, someone came out of the office.

A gossip-loving coworker didn’t catch the kiss but definitely saw the handsome man standing next to Qian Xiaoke, clearly waiting just for him. Their eyes practically lit up.

Everyone recognised this guy—he was the Chairman Jiang they often collaborated with. What they didn’t know yet was that this same Chairman Jiang would eventually be one of their future bosses.

When they looked at Qian Xiaoke, their eyes were full of speculation and stories. Qian Xiaoke knew what that meant—tomorrow, he was definitely in for some ‘heart-to-hearts’.

       Whatever.

Qian Xiaoke wasn’t stingy about this kind of thing. Why enjoy happiness alone when you could share it with everyone?

       He was generous.

Mostly, he wanted to show off a little.

By the time the two of them walked out of the building together, night had fully fallen.

It had snowed a few days ago, so the roads were slippery and the air was icy.

Jiang Tongyan said, “Almost forgot, we’ve got a date tonight.”

“Just the two of us?” Qian Xiaoke suddenly realised they hadn’t actually had a proper, traditional date since getting together.

What kind of date would Jiang Tongyan like?

If it were a real date, maybe hot pot or spicy snail noodles wouldn’t be right. After all, they hadn’t really celebrated being together either. Maybe he should order a cake?

While he was still lost in thought, Jiang Tongyan had already hailed a cab.

“Shen Huiming’s treating us to dinner,” Jiang Tongyan said. “He insisted on celebrating for us.”

“Shen Huiming?” Qian Xiaoke blinked, then the memory clicked. “Oh! I remember!”

“You don’t need to remember him,” Jiang Tongyan said. “Just remember him for tonight, then forget all about him after dinner.”

Qian Xiaoke tilted his face up and grinned, “Jiang Tongyan, you sound so jealous.”

Jiang Tongyan gave him a sideways glance. “Do you know who his partner is?”

“Who?” Qian Xiaoke blinked. “Someone I know?”

“The person I was supposed to be matched with on a blind date.”

       Be jealous, dammit!

Jiang Tongyan screamed internally: Qian Xiaoke! You’d better be jealous right now!

But not only did Qian Xiaoke not get jealous—he actually looked kind of excited.

“Will we get to see him tonight too? That really handsome guy?” Qian Xiaoke remembered that man. He was super good-looking, quiet, and rarely smiled.

At Zhou Mo’s birthday party, Qian Xiaoke had secretly stared at him for ages. But since that guy had two people practically glued to him the whole time, Qian Xiaoke hadn’t dared go over and get a closer look.

Looking back on it now, the two people who had been clinging to that handsome guy… Weren’t they Shen Huiming and Jiang Tongyan themselves?!

Qian Xiaoke genuinely liked Jiang Tongyan. He had no intention of cheating and he wasn’t that kind of person. It just wouldn’t be right.

But it should be totally okay to look at handsome guys, right?

Especially since he clearly remembered Jiang Tongyan had once said that guy was his ideal type.

Zhou Mo had been the one to tell him that. But at the time, Zhou Mo had made it very clear that Jiang Tongyan liked him, and had only brought it up to tease him.

Qian Xiaoke didn’t get upset about it. After all, an ‘ideal type’ was just ideal. Real life was something else entirely. His ideal type wasn’t Jiang Tongyan either, and yet here they were happily dating.

Qian Xiaoke was very clear-headed about all this.

Still… he did want to see that handsome guy. It was a pleasing thing to the eyes and happy!

“…Qian Xiaoke, could you not be so obvious?” Jiang Tongyan frowned, suddenly sensing something fishy.

Something was off. Qian Xiaoke hadn’t reacted much at all to Shen Huiming, but hearing that they might meet Shen Huiming’s boyfriend had him all excited?

       What was he up to?

“I’m always very reserved,” Qian Xiaoke replied sweetly, tugging on Jiang Tongyan’s sleeve and pulling him into the cab waiting by the curb.

“I just want to see what your former blind date looks like.”

Which wasn’t true. Qian Xiaoke just wanted to look at a handsome guy. That was all. His motives was very pure.

If there must be a selfish motive under the surface of the simple purpose, maybe it was that he wanted to personally observe what kind of special qualities the other guy had—qualities that he didn’t have.

Maybe he could learn a thing or two. Help fulfill Jiang Tongyan’s ideal-type fantasy a little.

Thinking that way, Qian Xiaoke actually moved himself.

The award for the most touching Chinese boyfriend must be given to him.

“Don’t look,” Jiang Tongyan said flatly. “Forget about him.”

“Why?” Qian Xiaoke snuggled up beside him in the backseat. “You afraid I’ll get jealous?”

Jiang Tongyan screamed internally: I WISH you’d get jealous!

But jealousy could wait. Today, his main goal in bringing Qian Xiaoke wasn’t to make him jealous, it was to flex his relationship in front of Shen Huiming.

He had very specifically told Shen Huiming not to bring his boyfriend.

Eye for an eye. Back in New York, those two had shown off so much, it was his turn for revenge tonight.

But of course, if Shen Huiming actually listened to him, he wouldn’t be Shen Huiming.

By the time Qian Xiaoke, red-cheeked and looking like a timid little bunny, followed Jiang Tongyan into that upscale restaurant, Shen Huiming and Suo Yang were already waiting for them.

Chapter 47

Other people’s love confessions are all about going above and beyond—roses, hot air balloons, fancy candlelit dinners in upscale restaurants. The more romantic, the better. The more over-the-top, the better.

But these two? They walk their own path.

Years later, when someone asked how they confessed to each other, Jiang Tongyan would say, “He was peeing, and I just… confessed in the bathroom.”

Absolutely ridiculous, and it totally fits them.

Qian Xiaoke’s face was hurting from how hard Jiang Tongyan was pulling. He gave his shin a little kick, all pouty.

It was a gentle kick, and it was just for show. The thoughtful and considerate Qian Xiaoke couldn’t bear to actually hurt him.

“It hurts!” Qian Xiaoke said. “You’re messing up my face!”

Jiang Tongyan let go and started rubbing his cheeks instead, kneading them like dough until Qian Xiaoke’s soft little face was all scrunched up.

“What are you doing?” Qian Xiaoke protested, annoyed. He grabbed Jiang Tongyan’s wrist and bit him. “Stop messing with me!”

“Then just say yes already.” Jiang Tongyan wasn’t trying to mess with him on purpose. This was just how he covered up his own nerves.

What if Qian Xiaoke said no?

This kid didn’t think like a normal person; he might really come up with something strange.

Jiang Tongyan had already decided. If Qian Xiaoke dared to reject him, he would just shut him up with a kiss and force him to take it back. As the saying goes, a shameless person is invincible in the world. Today, he was fully prepared to be shameless.

But Qian Xiaoke had never planned to say no in the first place.

He ran his fingers along the bite mark he had just left on Jiang Tongyan’s wrist, then broke into a helpless smile.

“Fine, fine. I’ll say yes.” And just because he couldn’t help himself, he added, “But I’m gonna be clear—you forced me.”

Jiang Tongyan looked at the mess of hair on top of his head and laughed. As he laughed, he pulled him into his arms.

        “fvck,” Jiang Tongyan said.

Qian Xiaoke smacked him. “Hey! What was that for?”

“I’m a little excited,” Jiang Tongyan said. “Cheng Sen told me that word is just an exclamation. It’s used to express awe at the world.”

“And what exactly are you in awe of right now?” Qian Xiaoke wondered. Was Jiang Tongyan in awe of how delicate his body and soft waist were, making it easy to push down?

Jiang Tongyan hugged him even tighter, proud as hell. “In awe that I finally have a partner.”

        I finally have a partner!

Now Shen Huiming can’t get under my skin anymore!

        Hell yeah!

        So satisfying!

       fvck!

Jiang Tongyan was practically feeling the rush of sweet revenge, like he had just scored a major win. He almost wanted to throw his head back and howl at the sky!

Qian Xiaoke tilted his head up to look at him and gave his cheek a gentle pinch. “Are you okay?”

“I’m great.” Jiang Tongyan looked down at him. “Couldn’t be better.”

Then he lifted him up and carried him straight into the bathtub. “Let’s try it the bathtub play,” he said. “Been thinking about it for a while.”

       Obscene!

       Vulgar!

But Qian Xiaoke was more than willing.

The two of them thrashed around in the bathtub, splashing water everywhere. By the time they were done, the bathroom floor was completely soaked. At the end, Qian Xiaoke wanted to play rock-paper-scissors with Jiang Tongyan, and the loser would clean up the bathroom.

But Jiang Tongyan dried him off and carried him back to the bedroom instead. “Are you dumb? Got a few screws loose, huh?”

“Why are you cursing me again?” Qian Xiaoke pouted, feeling wronged.

We’re dating now, can’t you say something nice?

        He felt unhappy.

He sulked and turned his lips down.

“Rock-paper-scissors, my ass.” Jiang Tongyan tucked him into bed. “You just lie there. Stuff like this should obviously be done by your brave, strong husband—me.”

Qian Xiaoke blinked up at him from inside the blanket. The longer he looked, the more his eyes curved into a smile.

        “Husband, you’re the best.”

Jiang Tongyan floated. He floated instantly. Just that one little sentence from Qian Xiaoke, and not only was he happy to clean the bathroom—he could clean the whole damn world.

He no longer looked like a CEO. Not at all.

Jiang Tongyan gave Qian Xiaoke a loud smooch and marched off to the bathroom with his chest puffed up.

This man, who usually didn’t even touch tap water, was now scrubbing away like a pro.

Meanwhile, Qian Xiaoke was feeling shy. It was not for any of those kinds of reasons, but because Jiang Tongyan was doing all the work while he was just lying there.

        It didn’t feel right.

A home was for two people, and chores should be shared.

But, his ass really did hurt. Next time. They would clean together next time.

Snuggled in bed, Qian Xiaoke was all warm and content, replaying everything in his head.

He had originally planned to wait for Jiang Tongyan to come back so they could cuddle some more and have a heart-to-heart. After all, the way they got together was so strange and wonderful. He had a million things he wanted to ask.

Like, how did someone like Jiang Tongyan, with all his advantages, fall for a little ugly duckling like him?

And how was it that someone like Jiang Tongyan, who was so well-off, was so crazy about him?

The more he thought about it, the sweeter he felt. He didn’t just have questions; he had things he wanted to say too.

However, they had gone at it a little too hard earlier, and Jiang Tongyan was still off cleaning. Eventually, Qian Xiaoke dozed off, half-asleep and smiling.

He didn’t usually dream, but this time, he did.

In the dream, Jiang Tongyan had bought him a room full of cotton candy. They danced in it, and when they got tired, they would eat a bite. Everything was soft and sweet, and they were so happy that it felt like they could melt.

It was a lovely, sugary dream and exhausting due to all that dancing.

When Qian Xiaoke finally woke up, the food delivery Jiang Tongyan had ordered had just arrived.

This time, Jiang Tongyan hadn’t asked Cheng Sen for help. The ‘domineering CEO’ with super learning ability finally learned how to use the takeaway software by himself.

Qian Xiaoke sat up dazedly, hugged the quilt, and watched Jiang Tongyan trot into the bedroom.

“Gimme a kiss,” Jiang Tongyan said, sticking his face right up to his.

Qian Xiaoke laughed and dodged. “Why are you like this? So weird!”

“Weird? How am I weird?” Jiang Tongyan asked. “You’re not regretting this already, are you? Planning to ditch me?”

Then he flicked Qian Xiaoke on the forehead. “Too late. If you back out now, I’ll just have to kill you to soothe my pain.”

Qian Xiaoke knew that this person only knew how to talk tough, but was actually soft-hearted inside.

“Then I’ll kiss you instead. Don’t kill me, okay?”

Jiang Tongyan grinned. “I guess I’ll allow it.”

He leaned in, and Qian Xiaoke gave him a loud kiss right on the cheek.

“Come on, time to eat,” Jiang Tongyan said. “I ordered all your favorites.”

My favourites? Qian Xiaoke thought. What are my favourites again?

He figured maybe it was mala soup or stinky snail noodles, but nope. When Jiang Tongyan helped him into his pajamas and led him out, what greeted him was a whole table full of chicken.

It was samgyetang1Korean ginseng chicken soup, braised chicken with rice, chicken stew with mushrooms, and even Korean-style fried chicken drumsticks.

Qian Xiaoke blinked. “Did I ever say I love chicken?”

“You did,” Jiang Tongyan insisted. “Now sit down and eat. Eat more. You’ve got no ass. Gotta bulk it up.”

Qian Xiaoke wasn’t sure if eating chicken really could fill his ass, but either way, he happily sat down to eat.

        =================

When it came to dating, both Jiang Tongyan and Qian Xiaoke were like girls getting on a bridal sedan for the first time. Because it was all so new, it was only natural they would get a bit overexcited.

Qian Xiaoke had initially planned that even if they started dating, they would still live separately. After all, moving in together too early could cause all kinds of unnecessary friction between a couple.

However, his plan was thrown out the window on day one of their relationship.

After a big meal, Qian Xiaoke found he simply couldn’t leave Jiang Tongyan’s place. They went from cuddling in the dining room to snuggling on the living room sofa and from the sofa to the carpet.

Qian Xiaoke said, “Oh no, it’s getting late. I should go home.”

Jiang Tongyan replied, “Don’t worry. Cinderella’s magic doesn’t end until midnight. Just wait a little longer.”

It sounded so reasonable, Qian Xiaoke agreed.

But by eleven-something, the two of them had rolled into Jiang Tongyan’s giant bed.

“Mmm… I really should go home. I have work tomorrow,” Qian Xiaoke said, though he didn’t exactly loosen his arms around Jiang Tongyan.

Jiang Tongyan pulled the blanket over the two of them. “Why don’t you take the day off? I’ll request it for you. Heck, I’ll ask Cheng Sen to give you a whole week of paid leave.”

“That won’t do,” Qian Xiaoke said. “I’m a career-oriented individual and I can’t let romance affect my work.”

Jiang Tongyan laughed. These nonsense words sounded downright adorable coming from him now.

He cuddled Qian Xiaoke tighter and said, “Okay then. You can go home.”

After that, the two of them went from Jiang Tongyan’s house to Qian Xiaoke’s house next door.

The next day, Jiang Tongyan mentioned this whole ordeal to Cheng Sen.

Cheng Sen rolled his eyes. “How can the two of you be this pathetic?”

Just then, Qian Xiaoke happened to walk up to the door of Cheng Sen’s office, holding a teapot and some cups.

“Chairman Cheng,” he greeted sweetly, then looked over at Jiang Tongyan. His cheeks flushed red, and he started fidgeting. “Chairman Jiang, the tea’s ready.”

He shuffled into the office with tiny steps, carefully setting down the teacups. He stole three glances at Jiang Tongyan while doing it, and every single one got caught.

The two of them kept exchanging flirty looks, and Cheng Sen saw everything.

When Qian Xiaoke finally backed out of the room reluctantly, Cheng Sen said, “Alright. Once you officially join the company, I’ll assign Qian Xiaoke to be your personal assistant.”

Jiang Tongyan was thrilled. But he put on a fake-serious face and said, “Wouldn’t that be inappropriate? We should keep our personal and professional lives separate.”

“Yes, it’s important to separate the two,” Cheng Sen said. “In that case, he can be your front desk receptionist.”

When Jiang Tongyan came back, he and Cheng Sen had become business partners. They had rented another floor for the company. Cheng Sen stayed on the current level, and Jiang Tongyan worked upstairs.

“In that case, I think it’s a great idea,” Jiang Tongyan said. “The front desk needs talent like him.”

“Oh?” Cheng Sen raised an eyebrow with a grin. “What kind of talent?”

“Good-looking, sweet-talking, hardworking, dedicated. An exemplary young man like that is hard to come by.” Jiang Tongyan continued, “Thank you, Chairman Cheng, for generously parting with him. I’ll gladly take him off your hands.”

Cheng Sen leaned back in his chair, laughing. “Chairman Jiang, how quickly you’ve changed your tune. I clearly remember you sitting here just a few months ago—your opinion of him wasn’t quite so glowing back then.”

Jiang Tongyan played dumb. “I don’t remember.”

“Should I help you recall it?”

“No no no no. Thank you for your kindness,” Jiang Tongyan waved it off quickly. Please, no reminiscing. If Qian Xiaoke remembered that he used to call him ugly, he could probably kiss his chances of getting into bed tonight goodbye.

Nowadays, Jiang Tongyan was the classic ‘henpecked husband2wife-controlled husband‘ but in the best way. The kind who wasn’t actually being controlled, but willingly set boundaries for himself.

He was a model husband and proud of it.

“You’ve really come a long way,” Cheng Sen said, sipping his tea. “Dinner tonight? Zhou Mo hasn’t seen Xiaoke in ages.”

“You two just want gossip, don’t you?” Jiang Tongyan saw right through them. “But it’s not up to me—ask my darling yourself.”

“…Jiang Tongyan, you are so disgusting.”

        Darling.

Could this man ever act normal?

“It’s not that bad,” Jiang Tongyan said with a shrug. “After all, I finally have someone. I should be allowed to show off a little.”

He pulled out his phone. “Oh right, let’s rain-check that dinner.”

        “You have plans?”

“Isn’t Shen Huiming free these days?” Jiang Tongyan said smugly. “I’m planning to invite him out tonight.”

He looked almost gleeful. “Last time, he brought that flight attendant and showed off their lovey-dovey nonsense right in front of me. It’s time to return the favor.”

Harbouring that petty, grudge-holding energy from the past, Jiang Tongyan called up Shen Huiming.

“Old Shen,” Jiang Tongyan said, “Wanna have dinner tonight? I’m bringing my partner, you come alone.”

Shen Huiming had just come out of a meeting and loosened his tie, looking a bit surprised. “You have a boyfriend now?”

“Not to brag,” Jiang Tongyan said, “but your boy here managed to land himself an absolute darling. See you tonight, I’m coming to show off.”
