Chapter 25

It was not often that Suo Yang felt this close to someone. Not in terms of spatial distance but in terms of distance in his heart.

People were probably like this. The more they grew up, the harder it was to accept the advances of others. Their defensiveness would increase with age. When a person approaches, they would subconsciously think about the other party’s intention.

It might seem too utilitarian and too realistic to say this, but this was true. Every adult who had been in society had a lock on their heart.

It was precisely because of this that people always say that after leaving the campus, there would be fewer and fewer sincere friends.

Suo Yang was not the type of person who could easily make friends with others. He was so used to being alone all these years that he had forgotten what it was like to have company. On many stormy days, what he thought about was when the weather would clear up and when was the time to take off; but instead, he thought that the atmosphere was just right at this moment.

The atmosphere was just right for a glass of wine.

Shen Huiming seemed to have seen through his thoughts, or maybe he just happened to have the same thoughts as him.

He asked, “There is red wine in the wine cabinet. Would you like a glass?”

Suo Yang smiled, “Then I’ll have a glass.”

Shen Huiming got up and walked to the wine cabinet.

Suo Yang cleaned up the finished meal boxes in front of him, put all the rubbish in a bag and put it aside, then turned to look at Shen Huiming who was opening the wine.

He walked over, took out the wine glass to wash it, and when he came back, Shen Huiming was already waiting for him.

“This wine is not bad,” Shen Huiming said, “but it needs time to wake up for a while1it means that Shen Huiming is letting the wine be exposed to the air for a while. If it is a young wine, a longer time exposed to air will help open it up to show more complexity and soften the tannins. If it is an older wine, a little time exposed to air will wake it up from its long slumber to revive its liveliness.”

Suo Yang saw that he had poured part of it into the decanter.

“No rush.” Suo Yang put the glass away, “The night is still long anyway.”

While waiting for the wine, the two sat in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows and watched the unsightly night scene outside.

The strong wind was swirling with branches and rain, and the lightning was accompanied by rumbling thunder, which was very similar to the end-time scene in the movie.

Suo Yang said, “This kind of weather is what I fear most.”

When a person was willing to confess his weaknesses to you, it proved that he had begun to accept you.

Shen Huiming asked, “Because of your job?”

“Part of the reason,” Suo Yang’s voice was very soft, but he was not anxious. He just told him a very common thing calmly, “It seems that since high school, evening and windy weather would make me feel horrible.”

       “Evening and windy days?”

“Yes, to put it simply, if I am outside at such a time, I will feel anxious and sometimes experience heart palpitations and dizziness.” Suo Yang smiled, “I even went online to find out what this was all about.”

“Did you find out the results?”

Suo Yang laughed out loud, “The internet says it’s called ‘sundowning syndrome’, which is generally a series of emotional and cognitive function changes that occur in Alzheimer’s patients at dusk.”

Shen Huiming didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, “Alzheimer’s disease?”

“Hahaha yes, dementia,” Suo Yang laughed in a relaxed manner, “When I saw this, I immediately closed the webpage.”

Shen Huiming shook his head, “So that’s why when there is any problem, you can’t just check it online. You will just find out that you are terminally ill.”

“So until now, I didn’t know why I am like this.” Suo Yang said, “But now I rarely think about it that much. The bad weather will only make me anxious because the flight is affected.”

Shen Huiming looked out of the window, or rather, he was looking at Suo Yang reflected in the glass window.

He was silent for a while, then said, “I think there is one possible answer.”

       Suo Yang looked at him.

Shen Huiming smiled, “But I’m afraid of offending you when I say it.”

“Still worried about that now?” Suo Yang deliberately joked with him, “Why didn’t you consider this issue when you bought the ticket for this flight?”

Shen Huiming lowered his head and smiled.

After a while, Shen Huiming restrained his smile and said seriously, “Maybe it’s because of a lack of security.”

The smile on Suo Yang’s face gradually faded, and he seemed to be looking out in a daze.

“I don’t dare to speculate on your psychology without permission, and I’m not sure if you’re aware of this problem.”  Shen Huiming said, “Evening signifies the junction of the day, an ambiguous period of time in which it is easy to give rise to emotions that would not be visible during the day. It was like a hook that hooks day to the night, and in bringing out the night, it also brings out the restlessness and desires of the people along the way.”

Shen Huiming turned to look at Suo Yang, “I don’t know if anyone has told you this, but you’re really very good. We don’t really have a deep friendship, but I can feel that you’re doing your best to do what you like, and I admire you for that alone.”

How should one describe this feeling?

It was like a secret that one didn’t discover, but it was suddenly exposed by others. In an instant, a chill ran down your spine, and your palms were sweaty.

Suo Yang was a proud person, and his pride was not the arrogance of raising his chin and looking down on others but the feeling that he was forged with a bronze wall that could not be violated. He felt that he should be infallible, flawless, and be praised everywhere he went.

In order to maintain this state, he had to take a deep breath at the beginning of each day, and he must be full of energy no matter how tired he was.

But there was a person who was telling him tactfully: Suo Yang, you are not confident.

Pride and confidence were two entirely different things

The crux of Suo Yang’s problem was that he had never been sure of himself. He felt that he was not good enough and that he had to live more attentively to get by.

At the end of every day, he felt that he had not grown at all. He denied himself every day, and at the same time, he had to pretend to put on an arrogant look of superiority. He thought he had played the proud So Yang very well, but he didn’t expect that Shen Huiming would see through him so easily.

As he saw that Suo Yang hadn’t spoken for a long time, Shen Huiming secretly thought it was bad and that he had said too much.

Suo Yang had a strong defensive mentality. If one talked too much, he would lock the door instead.

As for Suo Yang, after what he said, the two of them may go on two extreme paths. One was that Suo Yang opened up his heart to him and treated him as a close friend, and the other was to bid him farewell.

He didn’t know if he was being too smart or too stupid in saying those things.

For a while, he was dumbfounded.

Ever since he met Suo Yang, Shen Huiming felt that every step he took was a gamble.

“The wine is almost ready.” Shen Huiming stood up, “I’m going to pour a glass.”

Suo Yang nodded but did not speak.

When Shen Huiming went to pour the wine, Suo Yang kept looking at the people in the room through the window. He was full of questions, and he couldn’t figure it out at all.

When Shen Huiming returned with the wine glass and handed it to him, Suo Yang asked, “Am I being obvious?”

Shen Huiming was stunned for a moment and smiled, “Not really, although it seems like I’m being unmodest to say so, I believe that there are only a few who can tell.”

He laughed not only because of Suo Yang’s question but because, since the other party asked such a question, it meant that Suo Yang had not rejected him because of this.

       This was a good sign.

Suo Yang frowned with a look of disbelief. He really didn’t understand how Shen Huiming had found this out.

They had only met a few times, and they usually had very shallow conversations. Suo Yang has never shown any ‘weakness’ in front of each other.

       What was going on?

Suo Yang suddenly felt that Shen Huiming was a scary person, so smart that he wondered if this person had opened his sky eye2a higher sense of knowledge or some people would say the third eye.

“If I say I’m just guessing, does it appear that I’m not sincere?” Shen Huiming sat down again and took a sip of his wine.

“So, it’s not a blind guess.” Suo Yang said, “Can you tell me about it?”

“I’m still very accurate in reading people,” Shen Huiming said with a smile, “Of course, there are times when I miss the mark.”

He held the wine glass in both hands, hesitated for a moment, and said to Suo Yang, “This is how things are in this world. No matter how well you disguise yourself, but when you meet someone who really has his heart set on you, he can see the flaw at a glance.”

Shen Huiming said jokingly, “I don’t mean to be sarcastic about my love rivals.”

Suo Yang also laughed, took a sip of wine and said, “There is no such thing as a love rival.”

“Suo Yang,” Shen Huiming stopped joking and said to him seriously, “Actually, many times, words are the palest in comparison, and the best way to make a person affirm himself is not the praise of others, I believe you don’t lack this at all.”

Suo Yang looked down at the wine in his hand.

Yes, he had never lacked praise.

From childhood to adulthood, whether it was parents, teachers, classmates or friends, even if it was just a passenger that he had the pleasure of having met once, had always praised him.

He didn’t even understand why this was the case. Why was it that he couldn’t identify himself when he should be standing up straight and thinking he felt incredibly good?

This emotion has plagued him for years and even nearly broke him a few times.

“I’ve tried to find the answers before,” Suo Yang said, “I always thought that all diseases have their causes, and I could solve this problem by finding the root of the problem, but strangely enough, I found that I couldn’t find the cause at all.”

He took a sip of wine, “Many people’s character flaws initially come from their family, but in fact, I always think I came from a good family. My parents were respectful of each other; they were strict with me but never hurt me, and I was able to feel their love.”

Shen Huiming sat beside him and listened quietly.

“If it’s not originated from the family, where is it from?” Suo Yang said, “Emotionally? I’m not afraid of you making fun of me. I’ve never formally walked into a relationship, and I think things like relationships are too heavy for me, and I can’t afford it easily. I don’t trust other people or myself, and I don’t believe that perfect love really exists.”

“Actually, perfect love really doesn’t exist.” Shen Huiming smiled, “It hurts the perfectionist.”

       Suo Yang shrugged, “Probably.”

“Perfect love isn’t even common in works of art. All love has its uniqueness. But if we have to dwell on ‘perfection’, I think every love is perfect.” Shen Huiming said, “As long as it exists, it is perfect; even if it’s like cracked porcelain, it’s still a work of art. So love is art, and the pursuit of love is the pursuit of art, and you say that art is perfect? It doesn’t matter if it is beautiful art or ugly art, but where it is art, it is perfection. The same goes for people. Everyone is a work of art. In a way, there is no perfect person, but everyone is perfect.”

Chapter 37

There were more people waiting outside the operating room than Chen Yuncheng imagined. He saw a vacant seat on the bench in the corridor and took Gu Yaojia over to sit down, and only when he was tired of standing did he sit against the wall on the floor.

From time to time, patients could be seen being brought out of the operating room, and the nurse would call the patient’s name to speak to the family. They kept waiting for Zhou Yuqi all morning.

Gu Yaojia didn’t look very good. She didn’t speak, nor was she in the mood to play with her mobile phone, she just stared straight at the door of the operating room.

Chen Yuncheng asked her, “Has Zhou Yan been back?”

Gu Yaojia was called back and looked at Chen Yuncheng: “No.”

       Chen Yuncheng nodded.

Gu Yaojia was a little uneasy as she asked Chen Yuncheng, “Did you see his parents?”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t mention what had happened in Zhou Yan’s hometown. He felt that it was not the right time, and it would only make Gu Yaojia more worried, so he said, “No, I didn’t see them.”

Gu Yaojia was silent for a while, “I was wondering if he would go back to his hometown to borrow money from his parents, but now I really don’t know where he went.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “No matter where he has gone, if he comes back to you, you must tell me, okay?”

Gu Yaojia hurriedly said, “Of course, I will tell you. If it weren’t for you, the child wouldn’t be able to have surgery now. Zhou Yan must come to see you.”

Chen Yuncheng nodded and said nothing.

It was almost noon when Ning Junyan called Chen Yuncheng and asked him to go for lunch. They still went to the hospital’s staff canteen, and Chen Yuncheng sat on the seat, waiting for Ning Junyan to bring him the food.

“You can bring her a meal later,” Ning Junyan referred to Gu Yaojia.

       Chen Yuncheng nodded.

There were obviously many more people in the cafeteria at noon than in the morning, and there were hardly any empty seats. Two middle-aged men sat next to them, exchanging pleasantries with Ning Junyan, but when they heard him introduce Chen Yuncheng as just his friend, they were less interested and started talking about other topics.

While eating, Chen Yuncheng felt a little sorry since he was Ning Jungyan’s friend, but he was not an expert and famous doctor.

Halfway through the meal, Chen Yuncheng’s cell phone rang, and he saw that it was Guan Anlin calling.

He could almost guess what Guan Anlin was going to say, and as soon as he answered the phone, he heard Guan Anlin ask, “Did Zhang Wenyong find someone to smash up your kiosk?”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t want Ning Junyan to hear what he was talking about on the phone. He wanted to get up and go out, so he glanced at Ning Junyan and found that Ning Junyan wasn’t eating either but was looking at him. Chen Yuncheng hesitated and didn’t stand up but only said, “Did you hear it from him?”

Guan Anlin said, “I heard from the others. Your kiosk is closed. Is it serious?”

Chen Yuncheng asked, “Are you over there now?”

       Guan Anlin said, “Um”.

Chen Yuncheng said again, “Do you know who are those people?”

       Guan Anlin said, “Which ones?”

Chen Yuncheng said in a low voice, “The ones who smashed up my kiosk.”

The two middle-aged men next to them stopped talking and glanced at him invariably.

Guan Anlin said, “I don’t know. They were someone Zhang Wenyong found, I think.”

Chen Yuncheng felt that it was really inconvenient to speak here, so he said, “Then I know. I’ll call you later, I’m fine now.”

“Chen Yuncheng!” Guan Anlin’s tone suddenly didn’t sound good.

Chen Yuncheng asked him, “What’s wrong?”

Guan Anlin hung up on him straight away.

Chen Yuncheng put the phone back in his pocket.

Ning Junyan asked, “Who is it?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “A friend.” After he said that, he stopped talking and lowered his head to eat thoughtfully.

Ning Junyan didn’t question him further and picked up the chopsticks that were resting on the edge of his plate.

By the afternoon, the child’s surgery was successfully completed.

Gu Yaojia was a little emotional, and her eyes were full of tears. She then followed the bed to send the child back to the ward.

Chen Yuncheng also followed to the ward, and he felt sad to see such a small child lying on the hospital bed with his eyes closed, looking lifeless.

But it was always good to have a successful operation. He comforted Gu Yaojia with a few words called Ning Junyan, who was still at work and left the hospital to return to his kiosk.

Despite having prepared himself, Chen Yuncheng could not stop feeling depressed the moment he opened the door of his kiosk.

The weather was cold and humid in winter, and the water stains on the ground had not even dried out by now. He clumsily used his injured hand to clean up all the debris and garbage, putting it in a garbage bag and taking it to a nearby trash can to throw it away.

Afterwards, the remaining intact goods were packed in clean cardboard boxes and placed on high shelves.

After sorting out the stuff, he called the supplier to discuss the return of the goods, and finally went to a nearby print shop, printed the words ’Kiosk Transfer Wanted’ on white paper, adding his phone number underneath.

The inner room side was a little more complicated. Apart from the undamaged goods, there were also his daily necessities. But luckily, he didn’t have much of anything.

It was just that if the kiosk were subleased, he would have to move out, and the place to move to was also a problem.

Ning Junyan was reluctant to let him go, but he couldn’t stay with Ning Junyan all the time. It would be better if he could go and rent an apartment and find a new job.

After he stood at the door and hesitated for a while, Chen Yuncheng did not rush to pack up his things. He withdrew from the kiosk, closed the rolling shutter door, and pasted the white paper that wrote ‘Kiosk Transfer Wanted’ on the door.

The owner of the lottery shop next to him came over to take a look and asked him, “Closing, eh?”

Chen Yuncheng stared at those words as if he was reluctant to leave for a while. He nodded and said, “For the time being, I’m closing.”

The owner of the lottery shop said, “Are you afraid that those people will take revenge on you?”

Chen Yuncheng turned to look at him and said, “Not really. I wasn’t going to open it anymore.” Sooner or later, the business would have to close down, but he just didn’t expect to suffer so much damage before he closed down.

The owner asked him, “Then what do you plan to do?”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t answer. He had a vague idea in his mind some years ago when he was still working in a garage, he took the driving test with Guan Anlin and several other young people, and he took the B license. At that time, he didn’t think about what exactly he was going to do, he thought it might be helpful in the future.

Now, if he wasn’t opening a kiosk, he might be able to drive a truck for someone, going from one city to another. Although it was very hard and tiring, he could see many different sceneries. And he was alone, with no relatives and no family. No one would miss him no matter how long he left a place.

Of course, it was only if he had dealt with Zhou Yan’s affairs.

Chen Yuncheng sighed softly, raised his hand and patted the owner of the lottery shop on the shoulder, and said, “I’ll see how it goes. I’m going to take one step and see what happens next.”

The owner of the lottery shop suddenly lowered his voice and asked him, “Is that the person you offended over there?”

Chen Yuncheng followed his line of sight and turned to look and saw Guan Anlin standing across the street, looking in their direction.

“He seems to have been here in the morning.” Guan Anlin looked fierce and rebellious, easily giving people the impression that he was not a good person.

Chen Yuncheng said, “It’s okay. He’s my friend.”

Chapter 36

Later, they went to the hospital cafeteria together for breakfast.

Ning Junyan took him to the hospital’s staff canteen, which was not too crowded as it was not open to the public. There were quite a few doctors still wearing their work clothes, perhaps they were up in the morning after a night shift and waiting to check in.

After all, it was a big hospital. There were too many doctors and nurses, and it was normal that they didn’t recognise each other, so an unfamiliar face such as Chen Yuncheng’s did not attract much attention.

However, Ning Junyan had a clear presence here. As Chen Yuncheng followed him all the way in, almost all the young nurses he met on the way would take the initiative to say hello to him. Even if Ning Junyan responded expressionlessly, those young girls were not angry. Instead, it would leave a smile on their faces.

Ning Junyan asked Chen Yuncheng to sit down at an empty table and asked him, “What would you like to eat?”

Chen Yuncheng looked at the breakfast being eaten by the people at the table next to him and said, “Just steamed buns and porridge.”

Ning Junyan nodded and took his meal card1pre-paid card that can be used in the cafeteria in school or other place to buy breakfast.

Chen Yuncheng looked at Ning Junyan’s back and at the same time, heard the doctor at the next table talking to the nurse opposite him about the process of rescuing the patient last night.

He took out his mobile phone, lowered his head and sent a message to Gu Yaojia, “I’ve already arrived at the hospital. I’ll come over to you after breakfast.”

Just as he was about to put his phone away, a male doctor in a white coat and glasses sat across from Chen Yuncheng.

“Hello, I’m Dong Wenyue,” the male doctor introduced himself proactively.

Chen Yuncheng nodded, “How do you do?”

Dong Wenyue asked him, “Are you a friend of Ning Junyan?”

       Chen Yuncheng smiled slightly, “Yes.”

Dong Wenyue pushed his glasses, “Are you also a medical student? You didn’t to be from our hospital, right?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “I’m not a doctor.”

Dong Wenyue seemed a little surprised, “This is the first time I saw Ning Junyan bring a friend to the hospital. I thought he had no friends.” When he saw Chen Yuncheng staring at him without speaking, Dong Wenyue hastily added, “I was a classmate of Ning Junyan’s from college, and now I am his colleague.”

Chen Yuncheng nodded lightly with a smile, but he didn’t reply because he didn’t know what the other party wanted to say to him.

In fact, Dong Wenyue didn’t want to say anything either. He was just someone with a sociable character. It was rare to see that Ning Junyan would bring strangers to the hospital or even come to the cafeteria for breakfast. He couldn’t help but be curious and wanted to inquire about it.

At this time, Ning Junyan came back with the meal plate. He put the plate on the table and asked Dong Wenyue, “Is there something wrong?”

Dong Wenyue quickly stood up, gave his seat to Ning Junyan, and said, “Chief Ning, won’t you introduce me to your friend?”

Ning Junyan first put the porridge in front of Chen Yuncheng in silence, then handed him the chopsticks, and then asked Chen Yuncheng, “Would you like to get to know him?”

Chen Yuncheng, who had always been gentle in front of strangers, smiled and said, “Dr. Dong, he has already introduced himself.”

Ning Junyan nodded and looked at Dong Wenyue.

Dong Wenyue smiled and reached out to pat Ning Junyan’s shoulder, “Then you guys take your time eating breakfast. I won’t bother you.”

Ning Junyan put the steamed buns and a plate of pickles in front of Chen Yuncheng, and lastly, milk and eggs.

Dong Wenyue went back to his original table, and at the same table with him were a young female doctor in advanced studies and two young nurses.

The young nurse chirped and asked him, “How was it? Who is he?”

Dong Wenyue shook his head, “Your Chief Ning won’t say it.”

As she was drinking the milk, the female doctor of advanced studies turned to look over and asked, “That’s Ning Junyan, right?”

Dong Wenyue said, “You’ve heard of him too?”

The female doctor nodded, “Of course I’ve heard of him. He’s only thirty years old, right?”

The young nurse sitting opposite her quickly said, “Yes, handsome, isn’t he?”

The female doctor said, “Cool!” Then she said, “Handsome too!”

They had almost finished eating, but it was still early, so they were all still sitting in their seats.

Ning Junyan took an egg and gently cracked it open on the edge of the plate, slowly peeled the shell with his slender fingers, and placed it on the plate in front of Chen Yuncheng.

On Dong Wenyue’s side, the two young nurses looked at each other, and one of them said, “Chief Ning actually uses his sexy fingers to peel eggs for people.”

“If not?” Dong Wenyue couldn’t listen anymore and couldn’t help but say, “What’s wrong with a friend on good terms peeling an egg? Besides, what’s so sexy about his fingers?”

The girls at the table ignored him and just looked over here.

Dong Wenyue said, “If you like him, take the initiative to pursue him. It’s not like he has a girlfriend.”

The young nurse shook her head quickly, “No, he’s too cold.”

Dong Wenyue smiled when he heard the words, “So someone like me is better, right?”

The young nurse across from him smiled and said, “As long as you are half as handsome as Chief Ning, you would be the best.”

After she said that, the girls laughed.

Chen Yuncheng felt that the breakfast in the hospital canteen tasted quite good, at least the bun filling was well-fried. After he finished eating the buns, he said to Ning Junyan, “The people at that table over there have been looking at you.”

Ning Junyan let out an “um”. He obviously didn’t care about this matter and just stared at Chen Yuncheng and said, “Eat the eggs.”

Chen Yuncheng glanced at him and stretched out his chopsticks to pick up the peeled egg.

Ning Junyan said to Chen Yuncheng, “I’m going to do a ward round in the morning, and then there will be an operation.”

Chen Yuncheng listened to him while eating eggs.

Ning Junyan said, “It’s just a minor operation, and it should be over at noon. You’re going to see Zhou Yan’s son later?”

Chen Yuncheng nodded, “Jiajia is very scared. I’ll go keep her company.”

Ning Junyan looked at him gloomily but said nothing and only said, “I’ll pick you up for lunch at noon.”

Chen Yuncheng asked, “Is the operation going to take long?”

Ning Junyan said, “If it goes well, it will be over by this afternoon.”

Chen Yuncheng nodded. He originally planned to go back to the kiosk in the afternoon to clean up a bit, but now he didn’t know if there was enough time.

Ning Junyan probably guessed what he was thinking and said, “I’ll accompany you back at night.”

Chen Yuncheng looked up at him and reached for the box of milk on the table, inserting a straw and taking a sip before saying, “Won’t it waste too much of your time?”

Ning Junyan said, “Then make it up to me.”

Chen Yuncheng opened his mouth, not foolish enough to ask how to make it up to him. He just silently closed his mouth and took another sip of milk.

Ning Junyan continued, “You are not allowed to move out of my place until I give you permission.”

Chen Yuncheng couldn’t help but say, “It’s not like I can live there for the rest of my life.”

       Ning Junyan said, “Why not?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “One day you will—” He didn’t finish his sentence. He felt that it was not good, and he was being despicable again.

Ning Junyan suddenly laughed as he looked at Chen Yun Cheng and asked, “What will happen?”

Chen Yuncheng drank the last bit of milk, and the milk carton was sucked flat until it made a sound. He used his still gauze wrapped hand to put all the empty bowls and rubbish on the table into the dinner plate and said, “Nothing, look at the time. Don’t be late for work.”

After he cleaned up the table, Chen Yuncheng picked up the plate and looked around, wondering where it should be placed.

Ning Junyan got up and took the plate from him, and suddenly called his name in a serious tone, “Chen Yuncheng.”

       Chen Yuncheng looked at him.

Ning Junyan leaned closer to his ear and said, “You can hide now, but you can’t hide forever, you know what I mean.”

For a moment, Chen Yuncheng really wanted to find a turtle shell to put on his back so that he could hide inside it.

They left the cafeteria one after the other.

At Dong Wenyue’s table, the three girls kept staring at them until the two of them had left, and the two young nurses looked at each other, forgetting for a moment what they were going to say.

Chapter 24

How exactly should Suo Yang’s voice be described?

It was clean and clear, like a ray of light penetrating the clouds.

In the past, when Shen Huiming was dealing with all kinds of people, he would try to analyze the logic and behaviour style of the other party through their appearances out of his businessman’s instinct. He was good at predicting the next move in advance after the other party made their first move. This was the kind of foresight a businessman must have.

But when he met Suo Yang, his original framework of dealing with people was no longer applicable.

He was reluctant to guess or analyze the actions that Suo Yang might take next. All of his logical analysis of Suo Yang was wiped out, and he just wanted to follow his heart and be sentimental.

Now Shen Huiming was so sentimental that even hearing Suo Yang’s voice felt extremely healing.

“Coffee.” Shen Huiming looked up at him with a smile, “Black coffee.”

Suo Yang originally wanted to appear tense and to suspend Shen Huiming’s appetite, but the other party asked for coffee, which made it impossible for him to not remember their first meeting.

       “On an empty stomach…”

“It’s not an empty stomach this time,” Shen Huiming smiled, “I just ate a piece of small cake while waiting for the plane.”

Suo Yang laughed, looked at him helplessly, and said: “Okay, please wait a moment.”

It was funny. It was like a bubble suddenly appeared in a pool of stagnant water.

While waiting for Suo Yang to come over with coffee, Shen Huiming flipped through the book and turned to the first page again, where the story begins.

The first sentence of the whole book—In this world, there is nothing stronger than the desire for love.

If it were before, Shen Huiming would not agree with this sentence at all and even sneered at it, but now, as he looked at the clouds outside the window and thought about the person who would be coming over with coffee later, he felt that this statement hit him right in the heart.

On a whim, he tore off a sheet from his notebook, quickly wrote a line, and stuffed it into Suo Yang’s trouser pocket when the other party came over.

Suo Yang looked at him, didn’t ask any questions, just smiled, put his coffee away and turned to leave.

For the next few hours, everything went on as usual. Shen Huiming didn’t cause trouble for Suo Yang, and Suo Yang didn’t express special attention to him because there was an ‘acquaintance’ of his own sitting in the cabin.

They both knew only too well that Suo Yang was in the middle of his work and that Shen Huiming should not disturb him, nor should he be distracted. This was the self-control he should have, at the very least.

However, Shen Huiming didn’t feel bored during the seven hours or so he spent on the connecting flight to Moscow. He flipped through books, processed the documents sent by the assistant before he boarded the plane, and then took a short nap. The time passed like this.

For him, it was never possible to have a dull moment of free time. For a long time, Shen Huiming wished that he could have 48 or even 72 hours a day, and the things that he needed to deal with were simply endless.

Under such circumstances, he was willing to divide his attention and time to be close to Suo Yang, which was enough to show how irresistible Suo Yang’s allure was to him.

When the plane arrived in Moscow, the weather conditions were not very good, it was overcast, and it looked a bit bleak.

They had more than two hours of transit time and needed to change to another terminal to board the plane.

Shen Huiming walked out with the other passengers, and before he got off the plane, he took a second look at Suo Yang and thought that even if there was a row of flight attendants standing there, Suo Yang was the only one who stood out.

This was not because love was blind, Shen Huiming thought; this was a fact.

It would take another two or three hours to arrive in Berlin after taking off from Moscow. While waiting to board the plane, Shen Huiming had already started planning how to invite Suo Yang to take a walk in Berlin together after landing.

Berlin was a place he was looking forward to. After all, in his shallow understanding of the city, it should be colourful and full of a strong artistic atmosphere. In such an environment, it seemed easier for people to indulge in it and become emotional. In this way, it would be easier to open up and not to mention that it was where Suo Yang had his first international flight, so there should be unique emotions here. Shen Huiming felt that this place was perfect for the two of them to spend some time together.

However, the saying that plans would never be able to catch up with changes1this would be similar to ‘People may make plans in their minds, but God decides what they will do.’ would always be true.

Lightning and thunder began to strike outside half an hour before their boarding time.

Thunder and lightning weather was a terrible situation for flying. People like Shen Huiming who flew around all year round knew this all too well.

He got up, walked to the window, looked at the sudden rainstorm outside and the lightning that split the sky in half, and suddenly had a bad feeling.

A few minutes later, Suo Yang found him.

“We probably won’t be able to fly.” Suo Yang was just taking his chances to see if Shen Huiming was waiting obediently at the gate, but to his surprise, he actually saw him at the window.

“I have a hunch,” Shen Huiming spoke as a thunderclap rumbled, and Suo Yang frowned, “It doesn’t matter to me. I originally came here for you.”

Shen Huiming was so straightforward that Suo Yang forgot how to respond for a moment.

Shen Huiming smiled and said, “It’s alright, I’ll follow the arrangement, but it seems you need to appease the other passengers.”

At this moment, the broadcast sounded, announcing the news of the flight delay.

To everyone’s surprise, the delay was a long one, and the flight did not take off until late at night.

The sudden change of weather made many passengers restless. Shen Huiming sat on the side and looked up from time to time.

The airport staff tried their best to calm everyone down. Shen Huiming looked at the time and felt that he might have to stay here tonight.

At ten o’clock, they were told that they would not be able to take off today, and the airport staff took them to the hotel.

Before leaving the airport, Shen Huiming sent a WeChat message to Suo Yang while there was still WiFi, telling him about his current situation.

Suo Yang replied to him: OK, I will contact you later.

From the airport to the hotel, Shen Huiming felt how bad the weather outside was at the moment.

Indeed, it was impossible to take off in such conditions.

As he sat on the bus and looked up at the dark sky, he suddenly felt uneasy.

How many times had Suo Yang encountered such a situation over the years? How many times had he encountered an unexpected situation during a flight? Has he ever been afraid?

Shen Huiming frowned and tried not to think about it as much as possible, he couldn’t accept any bad thoughts sprouting up.

They were taken to the hotel, where first-class passengers were accommodated in a deluxe room, which was not bad.

Shen Huiming’s cell phone was almost out of battery right now, so he changed his clothes, charged his cell phone, and waited for Suo Yang to contact him.

There was still lightning and thunder outside the window, and it felt like the end of the world, with the wind and rainstorms causing the branches to be broken.

He was a little worried about Suo Yang and was surprisingly a little anxious as he waited.

In order to ease this lousy mood, Shen Huiming turned on his laptop and started working.

At almost twelve o’clock, Suo Yang finally sent a message.

Suo Yang said that he had also arrived at the hotel and asked Shen Huiming how things were going on his side.

Shen Huiming: Everything is safe, but I am a little worried about you.

Suo Yang had just entered the room with his colleagues and felt relieved after seeing Shen Huiming’s message.

He replied: Have you eaten anything tonight? I brought a boxed meal back.

Five minutes later, Suo Yang knocked on Shen Huiming’s door.

Shen Huiming did not eat anything at night, but it was not because he couldn’t eat. The airport prepared a very good dinner box for them, but he just didn’t have an appetite at that time.

What’s more, even if he had eaten, he would have to say he hadn’t; otherwise, how could he get Suo Yang to come to his door?

He opened the door and saw Suo Yang had already changed his uniform and wearing a light-coloured striped shirt and jeans. He looked like a refreshing college student.

Suo Yang held two sets of meals in his hand and said with a smile, “The steward took care of me and gave me two portions.”

Shen Huiming looked at the person in front of him and was a little dazed. This feeling of having a familiar person visit him late at night while he was temporarily settled in a foreign country was very heartwarming.

Despite the strong wind and heavy rains, lightning and thunder outside, the atmosphere in the room was not affected at all. Because of Suo Yang’s appearance, the atmosphere became warm and soft.

The two sat on the carpet and used the hotel’s promotional brochure to pad their meal box. They just sat on the floor and ate their dinner, which was several hours late.

They were like old friends, chatting in the dim light of the room. Suo Yang was no longer on the edge, after all, he was tired enough for today.

“By the way,” Shen Huiming reached for his phone, “I heard a song by accident that day.”

He opened the music software and searched for ‘Berlin’.

Before the start of this trip, Shen Huiming had checked countless information related to Berlin, even including the song.

Sometimes darkness, it creeps in
to my body while I’m sleeping.
and I watch you fall,
from the pedestal,
where you’ve rested for so long.

Suo Yang sat there, looked at the swaying branches outside the window, and listened in fascination, while Shen Huiming sat opposite him and looked at him.

Shen Huiming didn’t know what Suo Yang was thinking at the moment, but what he thought was: When you fall from the pedestal, I can catch you.

Chapter 35

It was indeed already warm in the house.

Chen Yuncheng and Ning Junyan had both taken off their jackets when they entered the room. Chen Yuncheng was only wearing a white shirt, while Ning Junyan had rolled up the sleeves of his coffee colour sweater, exposing a part of his arm.

Ning Junyan was obviously angry just now. Chen Yuncheng didn’t want to provoke him, so he subconsciously raised his hand to hold the shirt button closest to the collar and said, “I’m really not hurt.”

Ning Junyan said, “Then what are you afraid of?”

Yes, what was there to be afraid of? He didn’t get hurt, and they both were men anyway. They’ve bathed together for how many times he didn’t know anymore when they were a child. What was he afraid of?

Of course, he was afraid that it would be too ambiguous and was afraid that the other party was harbouring unspoken thoughts. Chen Yuncheng knew it well, but he couldn’t say it.

In the dim light of the bathroom, he and Ning Junyan looked at each other. Ning Junyan’s expression was very calm, and there was no extra emotion in his eyes.

After a while, Chen Yuncheng turned his eyes away first, his eyelashes dropping slightly as he dropped his gaze to Ning Junyan’s chest and began to unbutton his buttons one by one.

Chen Yuncheng looked thin, but he was actually very strong. When his shirt slid off his shoulders, his well-proportioned chest and abdomen were gradually revealed, and there was also a scar on his chest that had only a whitish thread-like mark left.

At this moment, Ning Junyan raised his hand and gently touched the scar on his chest.

Chen Yuncheng felt that the hairs on his body stood up in an instant. He forced himself not to dodge and said, “I got injured before.” Then, he turned around to show Ning Junyan his back, which was also clean and free of wounds. He put his shirt back on and buttoned it up with his head down, “Told you, I wasn’t injured.”

Ning Junyan said, “Don’t button it up.”

Chen Yuncheng paused when he heard his words but continued to button his buttons.

Ning Junyan extended his hand to take down the towel he had hung up earlier and said, “The wound can’t get wet, so don’t take a shower today, I’ll wipe it for you.”

Chen Yuncheng looked up at him and wanted to say that he could wipe it himself, but then remembered that his hands would still be covered in water.

Ning Junyan had already turned on the hot water, wetting and wringing the towel, and looked at Chen Yuncheng.

Chen Yuncheng took a deep breath and resigned himself to unbuttoning his shirt again. This time, he took off his shirt and placed it on the dry shelf next to him.

Ning Junyan wiped his body with a towel. The movements were not very warm, but they were meticulous, and the skin on Chen Yuncheng’s chest flushed a thin layer of red. When Ning Junyan wiped his neck, he subconsciously tilted his head just as Ning Junyan looked down at him, and the two were so close that Chen Yuncheng couldn’t help but turn his eyes away first.

“Pants,” Ning Junyan said to Chen Yuncheng after wiping his upper body.

Chen Yuncheng looked at him and said, “Forget it.”

       Ning Junyan didn’t say anything.

Chen Yuncheng said, “I’m already so old. Spare me my pride.” He felt that he was almost begging Ning Junyan.

In the end, Ning Junyan didn’t force the matter and handed him the towel after scrubbing it with hot water and wringing it out so that he could wipe it himself, and then left the bathroom.

Chen Yuncheng felt as if his chest was still hot until he lay down on the bed, leaving the distinct touch of the hot towel wiping over it.

Too much had happened today in one day, and after seeing Ning Junyan in the evening, his anger faded a lot to the point where he now closed his eyes in the dark and began to recall the scene where those three men had smashed his kiosk again.

At this point, it was impossible to say how angry he was anymore, and there was just a sense of powerlessness. Now, his kiosk would definitely not be able to be sold. He could only inventory the goods, and the most suitable way was to resell anything that was still worth something and sublease the shop directly.

Then the money he owed Ning Junyan would remain unpaid, and there was no telling when he would be able to pay it all back. Originally, he wanted to drag Zhou Yan, so the two of them would go out to work and return the money to Ning Junyan as soon as possible. But now Zhou Yan’s whereabouts were unknown, his stepfather’s case was still unfinished, and he didn’t know if Zhou Yan had anything to do with it or not.

As he thought of this, Chen Yuncheng had to think about Ning Junyan’s attitude towards him. Ning Junyan was too obvious, and sometimes it was too much for him to handle. He asked himself if he hated Ning Junyan, and even faced with Ning Junyan’s ambiguity towards him, it was not at all as distasteful as one might expect; it was more a kind of not knowing what to do. But it was obviously impossible for him and Ning Junyan. Even if they didn’t consider their gender, their living conditions were so different. How could they keep going together?

Just like the eldest daughter who eloped with a poor boy after the madness of love subsided, what was left was the daily life necessities, and that was the most torturous part. If it didn’t work out, it didn’t work out, and if you had to force it to work out in the future, it wouldn’t work out well.

Chen Yuncheng rolled over and lay on his side, and pulled up the quilt a bit.

The bed in this guest room was soft, and the surrounding area was quiet, except for the occasional car; no loud noises could be heard.

He was still a little excited, but his body was really tired, and it pulled him into a deep sleep before too long.

The next morning, Chen Yuncheng woke up early.

The worst thing about living in someone else’s house was that you were not free. If you got up too early, you would be afraid that you would disturb your host; if you got up too late, you would feel that you were not polite enough.

After Chen Yuncheng changed his clothes and came out of the guest room, he saw that the door of Ning Junyan’s room was still closed, so he went into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator to take a look and found that there was nothing but mineral water in it, not even an egg.

Today, Ning Junyan was supposed to be at work, but Chen Yuncheng didn’t know what time he would leave.

Chen Yuncheng wanted to go out to buy breakfast for Ning Junyan, but after putting on his coat, he realised that he didn’t have a key and he was afraid that the community gate guard probably wouldn’t let him in easily, so he had to give up.

He came back to the empty dining table and sat down. He turned on his mobile phone and found that Gu Yaojia had sent him a WeChat message at about 6:00 in the morning.

Gu Yaojia said: “I’m sorry for bothering you, Cheng ge. Qiqi was scheduled for surgery this morning. I’m afraid I have to deal with it by myself, so could I ask you to come over and take a look?”

Chen Yuncheng could feel the cautiousness of the other party’s words, and he quickly replied: “No problem. What time does the surgery start?”

After a few seconds, Gu Yaojia replied: “It starts at ten o’clock.”

Chen Yuncheng replied with the word “Okay”.

At this time, the door of Ning Junyan’s room opened. He came out of the room wearing a long-sleeved black shirt and saw Chen Yuncheng sitting in the dining room. He stopped and asked, “Have you washed yet?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “I brushed my teeth.” He was still afraid to get his hands wet and did not wash his face.

Ning Junyan said to him, “Come over and wash your face.”

For a moment, Chen Yuncheng felt like a little child, getting up in the morning and waiting for his father to wash his face, then eating breakfast and going to school.

This was an experience he had never had before because his father left very early, and for as long as he could remember, he and his mother were the only ones at home. Until his mother also passed away and he became the child no one wanted.

Ning Junyan wiped his face with a wet towel.

Chen Yuncheng took the time to ask, “What do you have for breakfast?”

Ning Junyan paused, “I usually go to the hospital cafeteria to eat. If you want to eat, I can make it for you.”

Chen Yuncheng asked him, “You know how to cook?”

Ning Junyan turned on the water and scrubbed the towels, “I used to study out on my own and learned to do some of it.” Then he hung up the clean towel and said, “I can make it for you every day if you want.”

Chapter 34

Chen Yuncheng packed up simple daily necessities, brought a change of clothes and left with Ning Junyan.

He turned off the lights in the room, pulled down the shutters and locked them. When he opened the back row door of Ning Junyan’s car and put things in, he saw a new heater box placed under the seat.

Chen Yuncheng paused for a while, put the things away and closed the door. Then he pulled open the passenger side and got in.

Ning Junyan had already started the car and waited until Chen Yuncheng got in, then he silently drove the car away from the curb.

Chen Yuncheng also sat quietly for a while and asked, “Is the heater in the back for me?”

Ning Junyan did not answer him.

Chen Yuncheng asked again, “Are you angry?”

Ning Junyan just glanced at him.

Chen Yuncheng suddenly couldn’t help lowering his head and smiled. He remembered when the two were young, there was a time when Ning Junyan was also angry.

He couldn’t even remember why Ning Junyan was angry at that time. Perhaps it was a minor matter in Chen Yuncheng’s opinion.

Ning Junyan ignored him for the whole evening that day and was very grumpy. When the foster mother kept rambling on about them during dinner, Ning Junyan pushed his rice bowl away and stared at his godmother with a cold gaze.

The foster mother was angry at the time, slapped the table and cursed, “What are you looking at me like that for?”

Chen Yuncheng was startled and stretched out his hand to pull Ning Junyan under the table. When he saw that Ning Junyan didn’t respond, he kicked him lightly with his foot.

Luckily, the foster father was in a good mood that day and said to Ning Junyan, “If you are not going to eat, get out.”

Ning Junyan stood up and left the kitchen.

The foster mother was still angry and cursed, “You just know how to waste food!”

Chen Yuncheng reached out and pulled over the half bowl of rice left by Ning Junyan over and said, “I’ll eat it.”

The foster mother pointed at him and cursed at him, “You just know how to eat! It’s better to raise pigs than raising you!”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t know whether he should eat or not for a while.

At this time, the foster father raised his head and said, “What are you arguing about, eat quietly.”

After that, did not say anything further and asked Chen Yuncheng to wash the dishes after she finished eating.

When Chen Yuncheng finished washing the dishes and returned to his room, Ning Junyan was lying on his side with his back to the door and did not turn around even when he heard his voice.

He went over and leaned over the bed, poked Ning Junyan’s back with his fingers, and said, “Don’t be angry.”

       Ning Junyan didn’t respond.

Chen Yuncheng took off his shoes and climbed onto the bed, knelt down and approached Ning Junyan. He stretched his head over Ning Junyan’s body from behind to look at his face and saw that Ning Junyan’s eyes were open as he stared at the wall coldly.

“Don’t be angry,” Chen Yuncheng stretched out his finger and poked Ning Junyan’s face.

Ning Junyan suddenly raised his hand and grabbed his finger with such force that it wrenched Chen Yuncheng’s finger into pain.

Chen Yuncheng shouted, “Ouch, that hurts.”

Ning Junyan glanced at him and let go of his hand.

Chen Yuncheng simply lay on top of Ning Junyan’s body and shouted, “Yanyan, don’t be angry with me, okay?” He didn’t wait for Ning Junyan to answer and asked again, “Did you have enough for dinner? There are still biscuits in the cupboard, do you want me to feed you?”

Ning Junyan turned over and lay flat on the bed, reached out and grabbed Chen Yuncheng’s collar, biting him on the collarbone.

Chen Yuncheng suddenly shouted, “Don’t bite me!” He was a little scared, afraid that Ning Junyan would really bite down hard.

At that time, they had been together for nearly two years, and Chen Yuncheng was familiar with Ning Junyan’s character. He knew that Ning Junyan was holding back anger in his heart and couldn’t vent it. Opening his mouth to bite him was a form of a temper tantrum, and it was also to relieve the resentment in their close relationship. Chen Yuncheng was not angry, but he was just afraid that Ning Junyan won’t be able to control his strength.

Fortunately, Ning Junyan let go after a while, leaving a clear tooth mark on Chen Yuncheng’s collarbone, with no broken skin or blood.

Chen Yuncheng lowered his head but couldn’t see it and felt pain, so he leaned in front of Ning Junyan to let him see and said, “Look at the bite you gave me.”

Ning Junyan watched silently for a while and tried to bite the other side of his collarbone.

Chen Yuncheng pushed him away, rolled over and got out of bed, saying, “No more biting!” He found the slippers under the bed and put them on, went over and opened the cupboard to find the biscuits hidden inside, then came back to the bed and knelt down, saying, “Eat something first.”

       Ning Junyan lay still.

Chen Yuncheng patiently broke the biscuits into small pieces and fed them to his mouth, “You want to eat or not?”

Only then did Ning Junyan open his mouth, chewing the biscuits slowly.

Chen Yuncheng fed him the biscuits at night and gave him water to drink before lying down and asking him, “You’re not angry anymore, are you?”

Ning Junyan didn’t answer but silently reached out to hug Chen Yuncheng, buried his head on his shoulder, and closed his eyes to sleep.

Chen Yuncheng knew that this meant that he was no longer angry.

For Chen Yuncheng, Ning Junyan was still very easy to coax.

After driving the car into the underground parking lot of the neighbourhood, Ning Junyan got out of the car and opened the back row door before Chen Yuncheng, and took all the things that Chen Yuncheng put in the bag out of the car.

This was the first time Chen Yuncheng had been to where Ning Junyan lived and judging by the location and the level of the neighbourhood, he knew that the price was not cheap. However, Ning Junyan can drive an 800,000 yuan1around $110k car, so it was not surprising that he lived in a several million yuan house.

Chen Yuncheng suddenly remembered Ning Junyan’s parents, who had picked him up by car at the time when Ning Junyan had come to his senses and recognised his parents. The middle-aged couple obviously cared a lot about Ning Junyan, their son, and his mother even hugged him and cried. They were very well dressed and drove a car that must seem very expensive to the young Chen Yuncheng’s eyes, and took Ning Junyan to the car.

Before he got into the car, Ning Junyan shook off his mother’s hand and ran to Chen Yuncheng to hug him tightly.

Chen Yuncheng felt sad, but he tried to look happy as he patted Ning Junyan’s back and said, “Hurry up and go back with your mum and dad.”

Then, Ning Junyan got pulled away from behind, although he was hugging Chen Yuncheng very hard, and Chen Yuncheng almost felt that he was about to be dragged over by Ning Junyan. He then reached out and pushed Ning Junyan, gasping slightly as he stood on the ground and watched Ning Junyan being pulled into the car.

After the car left, Chen Yuncheng followed the police back to the police station, waiting helplessly for his future arrangements.

They had no phone number, no mailing address, no contact details, and no expectation that they would ever meet again.

Chen Yuncheng stood in the elevator, looking at the floor that kept skipping, and asked Ning Junyan, “Where are your parents?”

Ning Junyan stood beside him, holding his things in his hand but never looked at him. Chen Yuncheng almost thought that Ning Junyan would not answer, and Ning Junyan said, “We don’t live together.”

       Chen Yuncheng nodded.

The first thing Ning Junyan did when he got home was to turn on the heater.

Chen Yuncheng looked at the whole room and felt a very masculine cleanliness and desolation. He asked, “How many rooms are there? Is it going to bother you?”

Ning Junyan didn’t answer, walked straight inside, opened the door of a room, stood at the door and said, “This is a guest room.”

Chen Yuncheng followed him and saw Ning Junyan put the bag on the bedside table. Then Ning Junyan took out the toothbrush and towel that Chen Yuncheng brought and left the room to go to the bathroom.

Ning Junyan hung up the towel, put the toothbrush in the mouthwash cup, and said to Chen Yuncheng, who was standing at the door, “Take off your clothes.”

“Huh?” Chen Yuncheng’s entire body froze.

Ning Junyan said, “I said earlier to see if you had any injuries on your body. Now that you’re not cold anymore, you can take off your clothes.”

Chapter 23

When Suo Yang first saw Shen Huiming’s name, he thought he had read it wrong, or maybe it was just someone else with the same name.

But soon he realized that this was Shen Huiming’s strategy, and the guy was discharged from the hospital without telling him at all.

Suo Yang was not the least bit upset. Instead, he looked at the passenger list and smiled. A colleague next to him asked, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Suo Yang politely responded with a smile.

Suo Yang wondered if Shen Huiming had ever thought that his whereabouts had been revealed before he even boarded the plane. This so-called surprise made him at a loss whether to cry or to laugh

For the first time in his career, Suo Yang was a little distracted as he went to get ready after the meeting.

Suo Yang suddenly remembered the first time he met Shen Huiming on the plane. On that occasion, just like now, he was given the list of first-class passengers during the meeting. However, at that time, he did not feel any strange emotions when he saw the name Shen Huiming, and at that time, he did not know that he would later become so involved with this person.

At this moment, Shen Huiming, who had completed the check-in procedure and was walking to the VIP lounge, took his mobile phone and wanted to send a message to Suo Yang, but he was afraid that he would affect the other party’s work, so he could only force himself to suppress such thoughts.

He went to the waiting room and received a cup of coffee. When he sat down and was about to drink, he remembered that he had been told by Suo Yang on the plane not to drink coffee on an empty stomach.

Shen Huiming got up with a smile and went to pick up a small cake that was individually wrapped.

He didn’t expect he would be so obedient. After Shen Huiming sat down, he took a photo of the coffee and cake in front of him, ready to find a chance to ask for praise from Suo Yang.

This was the first time Shen Huiming went to Berlin. He was not sure if Suo Yang would stay there and how much free time he would have if he did. However, he took the time to prepare himself properly so that if Suo Yang said he had enough time by then, they could just walk around Berlin.

Just a casual walk, not really a date.

Shen Huiming was very cunning. He believed that there should be a complete setup for dating. Meeting, eating, walking, and even watching movies were not considered real dates.

He anxiously waited for the boarding announcement. He, who has always been calm, even got up from time to time to check the news at the boarding gate.

This was what it felt like to want to meet someone so badly as if he had smelled the aroma of the other person from a long distance and couldn’t wait to follow this faint fragrance all the way.

Shen Huiming was holding the half-read copy of ‘On Love’ in his hand, which almost became his ‘love bible’.

Because Suo Yang had spoiled the ending in advance, Shen Huiming actually started to read the first 120 pages and kept rereading the previous parts again and again.

He felt that, at least at this moment, his relationship with Suo Yang was more suitable for the first eleven chapters. He refused the entertain the idea of the so-called ‘Romantic Terrorism1it was actually the 18th chapter’, and he only needed to discuss ‘Romantic Fatalism2and Romantic Fatalism is the 1st chapter in the book’ with Suo Yang.

During his stay in the hospital, Shen Huiming gave serious thought to the relationship between them and what attracted him to Suo Yang.

Although everyone says that love has no reason and that any love that has reasons would collapse on the first blow.

But in fact, Shen Huiming felt that everything that happened in the world had its reasonable reasons, including love.

The emergence and development of love follow the same principle—to touch the soft part of your heart.

Love was not without reason at all. The first time Shen Huiming saw Suo Yang, he saw the rare calmness and tenderness in the people around him. Although Suo Yang always maintained a ‘professional’ attitude, the just right sense of distance attracted him.

As they spent time together afterwards, Shen Huiming felt more and more that Suo Yang’s life was like a beautifully wrapped gift box that everyone wanted to take for themselves, but the price was so high that many people had to turn away.

But he wanted to go out of his way to get it back at a high price, not to get a glimpse of what was inside, but to untie the packaging that was binding him and give him freedom.

Shen Huiming felt that Suo Yang was yet another kind of himself, a person who was raised high by life and forced to tighten his nerves.

Therefore, he wanted to be Suo Yang’s hero, or at least allow the other person to be unrestrained when he was by his side.

The most clichéd metaphor to describe the relationship between the two he imagined was that Suo Yang was a swimming fish, and he wanted to be the everlasting lake for this fish3in a sense Shen Huiming wanted Suo Yang to be able to keep swimming on and on because he would be the lake that has no end.

       It was challenging and fun.

Shen Huiming waited for a long time and finally got the boarding notice.

He took his book and walked towards the boarding gate with his ticket and passport in his hand.

       Here we are again.

       Finally, we meet again.

He won the bet anyway, albeit with a little less than honourable tricks.

Shen Huiming smiled and walked towards the shuttle bus, which was going to take him to Suo Yang’s side, and he was looking forward to his reaction when he met him.

Suo Yang stood there to greet the first-class passengers, dressed in a neat uniform, with a decent smile and standardised conversation.

When Shen Huiming walked up, he looked at Suo Yang from afar, and the two of them looked at each other without any unusual reaction from Suo Yang.

When Shen Huiming arrived in front of Suo Yang, Suo Yang smiled and said, “Hello Mr. Shen, welcome to this flight.”

Shen Huiming smiled at him and nodded, responding, “Hello.”

After he said that, he went inside and found his place.

Thirteen hours. The journey was divided into two parts.

For the first time, Shen Huiming felt that the long flight time was a good thing.

Suo Yang greeted the passengers and returned to the cabin to continue the service in order. He helped the passengers to place their carry-on luggage and asked them what their needs were.

Shen Huiming sat there peacefully the whole time, but his attention was focused on Suo Yang.

       His voice.

       His smile.

The way he lifted his arms as he helped people set up their luggage.

       And that waistline.

The uniform shirt was tucked neatly into his trousers, and even the belt uniformly distributed by the airline seemed to be a limited edition of a luxury brand on Suo Yang.

The only one of its kind in the world.

Everything seemed like yesterday once more4a reference to The Carpenter-Yesterday Once More song. Shen Huiming seemed to have returned to the day he left for New York when a flight attendant called Suo Yang caught his attention and made his long and tiring journey full of mystical tales.

Ultimately, Suo Yang was very professional and held himself to a very high standard of professionalism.

He would not let the presence of Shen Hui Ming interfere with his working routine. He treated the other party as ordinary passengers during the whole process, following all the procedures and regulations, without even any unnecessary pleasantries.

Safety demonstrations routine, after that broadcast tasks routine.

Shen Huiming listened to Suo Yang’s voice on the speaker and tapped his fingers on the cover of the book with pleasure.

His fingers landed on the word ‘love’, as if he was tapping on the door of the heart one after the other as if notes were popping out of it.

The plane took off, and once again, Shen Huiming and Suo Yang flew together into the blue sky and into the clouds, and Shen Huiming felt as if he understood why Suo Yang liked this job.

       It was so romantic.

Leaving the footprints of his life at an altitude of 30,000 feet, the footprints were the notes, and each route was the lines of the music scores5stave, and not everyone could write such a tune.

Now, it was not only Suo Yang who had left footprints in his life, but also love who stepped in and forced himself into this life.

Their relationship sprouted in the blue sky, and it would also sprout and bloom here.

Shen Huiming looked out the window and watched as they moved further and further away from the familiar city, as they were wrapped in clouds and their love was as sweet and soft as a cloud-shaped cotton candy.

Does Suo Yang like to eat cotton candy?

He vaguely remembered that Suo Yang seemed to say that he didn’t like sweets very much.

But it didn’t matter. He just had to eat this one. Keep this one and put it in his mouth, and let it melt little by little for a lifetime.

In the midst of Shen Huiming’s wild thoughts, the plane reached the stratosphere, Suo Yang came over, stood beside him, leaned slightly and said, “Mr. Shen, can I get you something to eat?”

Chapter 22

The opportunity was definitely there, and Shen Huiming had been waiting for this opportunity.

However, the fact that he was hospitalized seriously affected his progress with Suo Yang and once again proved that ‘Your health is your most precious asset’.

When one’s health was poor, one’s efficiency in pursuing others was forced to decrease.

After Suo Yang met Shen Huiming in the hospital, he never saw him again until Shen Huiming was discharged from the hospital.

In fact, Suo Yang was worried about him. However, on the one hand, he had to fly all over the place, and on the other hand, he did not want to show too much concern for the other party. It was not his style to be too attentive.

However, the two of them kept in touch with each other, and before Suo Yang left the hospital, Shen Huiming successfully added his WeChat.

WeChat was much more convenient than texting.

Several times, when Suo Yang landed, he subconsciously wanted to report his position to Shen Huiming, but most of the time he held back. The only time he didn’t was when he flew to New York again, and that night he stayed at the same hotel as his colleagues on the same shift.

This time he declined the invitation to go to the bar and stayed at the hotel alone under the excuse that he had a ‘headache’.

At night, just after it rained in New York, he stood by the hotel window and smoked a cigarette.

The cool air refreshed his mind and made him not sleepy. He hadn’t smoked for a long time, and he almost choked when he took a puff.

It was on this night that Suo Yang suddenly began to admit that he had some concerns. He used to think that he would not care too much about anyone because he was taught to love himself more since he was a child.

His parents had their own education method, which always regulated and constrained Suo Yang’s life. Even though he had lived alone for many years without his parents, the rules he strictly followed since childhood had been engraved in his bones and could not be changed.

Don’t like others easily, and don’t be kind to others easily because everyone is selfish, except for parents; no one would love you without limits, and it was not worth your selfless love.

These were the principles that his parents taught him.

Suo Yang always felt that what his parents said was right, that perfect, unreserved love could only be found in literature or artworks that had not been embellished; Romeo and Juliet, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai1The Butterfly Lovers(梁山伯与祝英台) is a Chinese legend of a tragic love story of a pair of lovers, Liang Shanbo (梁山伯) and Zhu Yingtai (祝英臺), whose names form the title of the story., none of them were real.

If they did exist, they were few and far between.

It was said that people would meet 29.2 million people in their lifetime, and the probability of two people falling in love was only 0.000049%.

Influenced by his parents’ ideas, Suo Yang had also become a ‘love pessimist’ and thought that such things could never be found.

He thought he would never meet such a person in his life who could hit his nerves, but accidentally, this person seemed to really appear.

Suo Yang was on guard while dealing with it. He thanked Shen Huiming for not rushing in and knocked on his door calmly.

He casually took a picture of New York late at night after the rain and sent it to Shen Huiming.

He didn’t say where he was, but he believed Shen Huiming would recognize the nearby landmarks.

Shen Huiming was a bit flattered to receive the message. Although in this relationship, it was not that he was the one who always took the initiative while the other party stayed indifferent. At times, Suo Yang would respond to him, but after all, there were very few times he would take the initiative to send messages.

It was noon in China, but the picture sent by the other party was midnight.

This feeling of two worlds crossing and overlapping made Shen Huiming Ming feel somewhat fascinated.

On one side was the warm light of an autumn day, and on the other was the cool rain of an autumn night. One was warm, and one was cold. After he had given some thought to it, Shen Huiming raised his hand and took a picture of the view outside the ward and sent it to Suo Yang.

After Shen Huiming finished sending the photo, he then said: When will we meet again in New York?

Suo Yang smiled, held his cigarette in his mouth, typed with both hands, and replied to Shen Huiming—it depends on when you will be discharged from the hospital.

The two didn’t talk for long. Shen Huiming remembered that it was already late at night there and urged Suo Yang to get some rest.

He was now all too aware of the importance of a good night’s rest, and staying up late was not an option.

Suo Yang was still not sleepy when he lay down. He took the phone to look at his previous chat records with Shen Huiming. When he realized how stupid his behaviour was, he quickly turned off the phone and went to sleep.

He had a dreamless night, but when he woke up in the morning, he received a greeting from Shen Huiming.

—Good morning. It should be dawn on your side of the world.

Suo Yang sat on the bed hugging the quilt and smiled. When someone inquired him about a good morning, his annoyance vanished instantly.

Regarding that bet, both of them kept it in their minds.

Originally, when Shen Huiming brought up this bet, he intended to follow the will of God. He always felt that there was an invisible hand between him and Suo Yang that was connecting them. Otherwise, how could he explain the previous coincidental encounters one after another?

So, at the very beginning, he didn’t want to do anything deliberately. It would have been the most romantic thing to have a willow grow out of nothing2to hardly do anything to reap the outcome3.

However, when he was finally discharged from the hospital and returned to the company to deal with the accumulated work for two days, he felt that to leave everything between him and Suo Yang to destiny was a little bit unfair to Fate.

Fate was only responsible for letting them meet, not for the subsequent development.

It was up to them to decide how far they would go.

It was up to them to plant the ‘cause’ and taste the ‘fruit of the ‘cause’  by themselves. In the end, whether it would be good or bad, whether they would be satisfied and happy or whether they will end up with regret. The responsibility should be their own, not Fate.

What’s more, Shen Huiming discovered that Suo Yang was actually looking forward to it as much as he did.

Since this was the case, how could he let Suo Yang down?

Shen Huiming got discharged from the hospital and didn’t tell Suo Yang. He was going to give him a surprise.

It was not difficult to know where Suo Yang would fly on a certain day. Shen Huiming expedited the visa application, freed up time, and bought a plane ticket.

The flight to Berlin took nearly thirteen hours, with a flyover in Moscow.

When Shen Huiming set off to the airport with his simple luggage, he couldn’t help but think: It was not easy to court a flight attendant. You have to have the money and the time.

The streetscape kept receding, and Shen Huiming was getting closer and closer to the airport.

At this time, Suo Yang didn’t know anything about Shen Huiming’s whereabouts. He had just arrived at the airport and was about to go to a meeting.

Before he left home, he was still sending a message to Shen Huiming. At this time, he didn’t know that Shen Huiming had been discharged from the hospital, and he was about to win their bet.

Suo Yang stood in front of the bathroom mirror and adjusted his uniform again, making sure that he was in perfect condition.

He walked out of the bathroom and went to the meeting with other colleagues in the team.

He had to fly to Berlin today. The first international flight in his flight attendant career was to Berlin, but he hadn’t had the opportunity to fly this route since then.

He liked the place quite a lot.

When all the staff are there, the meeting begins.

The first-class passenger list was handed over to Suo Yang. He looked through the information of each passenger as usual and then saw the familiar name—Shen Huiming.

Sorry for the non-existent update for a month.
I just lost my little sister at the start of this November, and honestly, translating and updating is the last thing I could think of. I gave some notifications in discord, but I’m not sure if everyone is in our discord. So I apologized to those who were waiting for the updates enthusiastically. I will try to keep regular updates, however, but with the loss of my little sister, my schedule will not be as flexible as before. So I apologize in advance because I might do sporadic updates after this.

Hope you are all well, and be sure to go and do checkups every once in a while 🙂

Chapter 33

Long Zhanyu called out to people to leave. He got into a police car parked at the roadside, handed the keys to his colleague and sat on the passenger side himself.

Before he left, he leaned over next to the car window and called Chen Yuncheng, “Come here.” He hooked his finger.

Chen Yuncheng walked over and bent down to look at him through the car window.

Long Zhanyu leaned close to Chen Yuncheng’s ear and whispered, “I will definitely catch those few people, and I will also ask someone to keep an eye on your side, and I will not give Zhang Wenyong another chance to trouble you.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Thank you, Officer Long.”

Long Zhanyu said again, “But you are the one who let Zhou Yan run away from me. You go and ask him to come back and surrender.”

Chen Yuncheng was a little helpless, “I don’t know where Zhou Yan is.”

Long Zhanyu said, “His wife and son are in the hospital now. I believe he can’t run away. You tell him that if he turns himself in, he can go to the court and asks the judge for mercy. Considering his family situation, it is not impossible to give him probation. Let him clear his head a bit and don’t get into bigger trouble.”

When Chen Yuncheng heard Long Zhanyu’s last words, he suddenly remembered Zhou Yan’s stepfather who was beaten to death at home, and his heart beat a few times uncomfortably.

Long Zhanyu looked at him, “What’s your expression?”

Chen Yuncheng closed his eyes to keep his expression from looking too grave. He stood up straight from the car window and said, “Got it, Officer Long. As long as I see Zhou Yan, I will definitely persuade him.”

Long Zhanyu nodded and asked the colleague beside him to drive.

When Long Zhanyu left, Chen Yuncheng turned his head and saw Ning Junyan standing there expressionlessly looking at them. He hurried over and hesitantly explained, “That one just now is the officer in charge of the case.”

       Ning Junyan did not speak.

Chen Yuncheng turned to look at the small kiosk he had been running for more than two years and could not suppress a sigh as he reached for the broom that was leaning against the corner.

He wanted to sweep all the broken glass together, but before doing so, he squatted down and picked up the cigarettes and other things on the floor that still looked intact in their packaging.

Ning Junyan walked in at this time, took the broom from Chen Yuncheng’s hand, grabbed his wrist and said, “Go to the hospital first.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “No need, I’m not injured. It’s just my palm was cut by broken glass.”

       Ning Junyan said, “Show me.”

Chen Yuncheng lowered his head and wanted to untangle the messy gauze on his hands and showed him.

Ning Junyan said, “Also on the body”

Chen Yuncheng stopped and looked up at him.

Ning Junyan stopped talking, grabbed Chen Yuncheng’s hand, and personally helped him untie the gauze on his hand.

The wound on his palm stopped bleeding, but it still looked bright red, and there were two deep wounds that looked somewhat hideous.

Ning Junyan asked him, “Has it been disinfected?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “I sprayed it with alcohol.”

Ning Junyan let go of his hand, turned and left the store and went to the pharmacy behind the street. He bought iodophor1 and cotton swabs. After he returned, he held Chen Yuncheng’s hand and carefully used the cotton swabs to disinfect the wound on his palm with iodophor.

Chen Yuncheng looked down at him, but there was not much expression on his face.

Ning Junyan wrapped his palm again with clean gauze and said, “Don’t get it wet.”

Chen Yuncheng gave a soft “mmm”.

Then Ning Junyan took off his coat and helped Chen Yuncheng to tidy up the store simply. The goods that hadn’t been smashed were picked up from the ground and placed on top of the counter.

“Who did it?” Ning Junyan asked in a cold tone.

Chen Yuncheng said, “It’s just a few gangsters. I’ve already called the police, and the police will take care of it. Don’t worry.”

Ning Junyan asked, “What are they up to? Is it related to Zhou Yan’s incident?”

Chen Yuncheng leaned against the still intact counter and said, “It’s alright. It’s just that there was a little conflict before, not a big deal.”

He was very afraid of involving Ning Junyan. Ning Junyan was not like the likes of them; it was not a big deal if they got caught and locked up for a few days. Ning Junyan was so good that he shouldn’t get involved in such things.

After he finished tidying up the store with some difficulty, when Chen Yuncheng was about to enter the inner room, he suddenly saw a small head peeking out from the door and looking in.

He stopped and saw that the person who was secretly peeking in the doorway was the little girl who hadn’t been seen for quite some time stealing things.

As she saw that Chen Yuncheng had seen her, the little girl asked, “Is there any more bread?”

The bread had a short shelf life. Chen Yuncheng didn’t open a shop two days ago and didn’t ask anyone to deliver it. He said to the little girl, “There’s no more bread, do you want biscuits?”

The little girl shook her head, “No, then.” After she said this, she turned around and was about to leave.

Chen Yuncheng quickly stopped her, “Little missy.”

The little girl looked back at him.

Chen Yuncheng said, “I don’t want your money, I’ll give you the biscuits.”

The little girl looked at him hesitantly.

The biscuits and snacks, which are not valuable goods, did not suffer much. Chen Yuncheng said to Ning Junyan, “Help me get her a bag of biscuits.”

Ning Junyan glanced at the counter and asked, “Which bag?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “All of them. There should be stuffed cookies, I think.”

Ning Junyan took a bag of Oreos, walked to the entrance of the shop, reached out and handed it to the little girl.

The little girl looked up at him but did not reach out to take it.

Chen Yuncheng leaned over the counter, looked at them with a slight smile, and said to Ning Junyan, “Be gentle.”

Ning Junyan half-squatted down and said to the little girl, “The boss gave this to you. Take it.” His tone sounded slightly warmer.

The little girl finally reached out to take it. She turned her head to look at Chen Yuncheng and said, “Thank you.” Then she turned and ran away.

Ning Junyan stood up, Chen Yuncheng was still looking at him with a smile and said to him, “Will you be gentler with your own children in the future than you are now?”

“I won’t have children,” Ning Junyan said in a calm tone as if he was saying he hadn’t eaten dinner yet, and walked inside, “The life that I like didn’t happen.”

The smile on Chen Yuncheng’s face suddenly froze and then warmed slightly. He thought that his face was probably red, but at that moment Ning Junyan wasn’t looking at him and didn’t notice.

The condition of the inner room was not much better than the outside. A lot of drinks that Chen Yuncheng had piled up against the walls were knocked over and stepped on. The ground was still wet. Because the drinks had sugar in them, it was very unpleasant to step on them as they were sticky and greasy.

Then he found that the scarf that Ning Junyan had given him that he was hanging in the room had been torn off, and it fell to the ground and stepped on it a few times.

Chen Yuncheng walked over to pick up the scarf and said, “I’ll send it to dry cleaning tomorrow.”

Ning Junyan followed him to his side, reached out and took the scarf and casually tossed it aside, saying, “Come and stay at my place tonight.”

“No need,” Chen Yuncheng refused without thinking.

Ning Junyan said, “There is no way to sleep here.”

Chen Yuncheng turned his head and glanced at the whole room, “The bed is still good.”

Ning Junyan didn’t speak and just looked at him silently.

Chen Yuncheng said, “Let me sweep the water off the floor—”

“I’m not discussing with you,” Ning Junyan interrupted him, his voice was soft, but his tone was heavy.

Chapter 32

That afternoon, there was a lot of commotion in the usually quiet streets of the old town, and Chen Yuncheng’s small kiosk was smashed.

The three tall and strange young men were obviously come directly to smash things. Without saying any unnecessary words, they directly overturned the wine and cigarettes in Chen Yuncheng’s container to the ground; the glass bottles were shattered, valuable cigarettes were scattered on the ground, and the packaging was trampled to pieces.

Chen Yuncheng struggled to fight back. He grabbed one of the youths and pressed his face hard against the broken glass on the ground. Then another person grabbed his collar from behind and lifted him away, where he sat with his palms pressed into the broken glass. At this time, someone even broke into the inner room, overturned all the goods he had stored and then stomped on them hard.

These three people ran away after smashing the kiosk, not holding back in the slightest.

Chen Yuncheng chased them out with a limp foot, but the three men were already gone before he could get very far. He stopped, his chest heaving violently with anger, and he couldn’t help but curse.

The people in the shops next door heard the commotion, but no one dared to come out to meddle in their business. Only someone secretly called the police.

The police arrived quickly. Long Zhanyu pulled the police car to the side of the road, pulled open the door and got out, and saw Chen Yuncheng sitting in front of his own kiosk, which was in a mess.

Long Zhanyu walked over, looked down at Chen Yuncheng, and said, “What happened to your hand?”

Chen Yuncheng’s palm was dripping with blood, and he was his nails to pick out a piece of broken glass that had been stuck into his palm, his brow furrowed tightly.

Long Zhanyu asked him, “Do you want to go to the hospital first?”

Chen Yuncheng looked up, and his face was a little gloomy. He shook his head and said, “No need.”

Long Zhanyu then stopped asking him. He walked past him and went into the kiosk. He was careful not to step on the glass fragments on the ground, and after looking briefly, he stood at the door of the store and asked Chen Yuncheng, “What’s going on? Go back with us first and make a statement in the office. I’ll find someone to do the investigation now.”

Chen Yuncheng stood up and said to Long Zhanyu, “Wait for me for a while.” After he said that, he walked along the street towards the front.

Long Zhanyu stood there, looking at his limping figure from behind.

Chen Yuncheng went to the pharmacy to buy gauze and alcohol. He used the alcohol spray to spray his palms a few times randomly as disinfection and wrapped them in gauze while enduring the pain.

While doing this, he was following Long Zhanyu in the police car to the police station to make a statement.

As Long Zhanyu was driving, he asked him, “You were also crippled?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “No, I broke it myself.”

Long Zhanyu said, “Then you are quite unlucky.”

Chen Yuncheng was not in the mood to argue with him and silently looked out the car window.

When the statement was taken, Chen Yuncheng gave a complete account of what happened, “I don’t know those three people, I’ve never met them before,” he finally said.

Long Zhanyu asked him, “Who have you offended recently? Or anyone you suspect that might be targeting you?”

Chen Yuncheng spread his hands and saw that the gauze was soaked with blood. He slowly clasped his palms, felt the pain, and said, “I don’t know.”

A young policeman was typing in front of the computer to record, and when he heard the words, he typed in the words “I don’t know”.

At this time, Long Zhanyu raised his hand to indicate that he did not need to write down the following content for the time being and said to Chen Yuncheng, “Did you get hit in the head today?”

Chen Yuncheng looked at him and said nothing.

Long Zhanyu said, “Zhang Wenyong has harassed you like this, and you still protect him? Did your brain get hit?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “I don’t have any evidence, so I don’t dare to speculate.”

Long Zhanyu said, “It’s the police’s job to find evidence. You only need to provide clues. You can just tell us the names of all the people who have had conflicts recently, and we will investigate them one by one. Do you understand?”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t answer but asked Long Zhanyu, “Why did you let Zhang Wenyong out?”

Long Zhanyu leaned on the back of the chair, clasped his arms lazily on his chest, and said, “Because of the lack of evidence, the prosecutor’s office will not arrest him even if he has detained him. He only admits that he introduced the person who modified the vehicle to the X-ethnic gang that stole the car, but now neither the person who modified the car nor your brother Zhou Yan has arrived at the case. The evidence cannot bite him, so they can only let him go first. So where the hell is Zhou Yan?”

Chen Yuncheng lowered his eyes and said in a low voice, “I don’t know.”

Long Zhanyu said, “Were you the one who tipped off Zhou Yan?”

Chen Yuncheng said softly, “I want to ask him to surrender.”

Long Zhanyu said, “Forget it, let’s get back to your case, do you suspect Zhang Wenyong of finding someone to smash your kiosk?”

       Chen Yuncheng nodded, “Yes.”

After the statement was recorded, Chen Yuncheng stood at the entrance of the police station and saw that it was already quite late and the sky was dark.

Long Zhanyu parked the police car in front of him, pressed down the passenger’s window, and asked him, “Do you want to go to the hospital?”

       Chen Yuncheng replied, “No need.”

Long Zhanyu said, “Then I’ll take you back.”

Chen Yuncheng looked at him for a moment, pulled open the passenger door and sat in, “Officer Long is being so kind today?”

Long Zhanyu turned the steering wheel with a cigarette in his mouth, “The technical guys are still doing a field investigation over there to see if there’s something to mention, and by the way, I’ll go and pull a surveillance.”

Chen Yuncheng sat quietly for a while and said, “Thanks.”

Long Zhanyu laughed and said in a less serious tone, “It is my job to safeguard the safety and interests of the people, so what is there to thank.”

When they returned to the store, the on-site investigation had just ended, a few fingerprints and a few bloodstains had been extracted, and the entire scene had been photographed.

People from several nearby shops were still looking over their shoulders, and there were also pedestrians passing by who stopped to watch out of curiosity.

Chen Yuncheng stood at the door, looked at the cigarette case soaked in wine on the ground, and slowly took a breath.

Long Zhanyu handed him a cigarette.

Chen Yuncheng glanced at it and said, “No need.”

Long Zhanyu said, “Take it. You look upset.” He saw that Chen Yuncheng was wrapped in gauze, and directly put it in his mouth, and then used a lighter to help him light the fire.

There was smoke from the corner of Chen Yuncheng’s mouth.

Long Zhanyu also lit one for himself and said, “I’ll adjust the surveillance later. As long as they haven’t run far, we’ll definitely arrest them. However, this group of people is obviously paid for by Zhang Wenyong. Arresting them won’t bite Zhang Wenyong, let alone compensate you for the financial loss, so you should be mentally prepared.”

Chen Yuncheng understood this in his heart, but when he heard Long Zhanyu say this, he couldn’t restrain his emotions, bit his cigarette and said vaguely, “Motherfuc…”

He didn’t say a few words completely, and the last sound disappeared from his mouth.

Long Zhanyu looked at him a little strangely but saw him turn his head to look at a tall man standing on the side of the road.

When Chen Yuncheng saw Ning Junyan, he remembered that Ning Junyan had said to come to him after work. He suddenly felt a little dazed, wondering if Ning Junyan had heard him swearing. He didn’t seem to have ever cursed in front of Ning Junyan.

Then, he took the cigarette from his mouth with his gauze-wrapped hand.

Long Zhanyu looked at him inexplicably, then looked at Ning Jun Yan in front of him and said, “Don’t crowd around here.”

Chen Yuncheng said quickly, “He is my friend.”

Ning Junyan’s eyes fell on his hand, then turned his head to look inside the kiosk again, and with a calm expression, “What’s wrong?”

Chen Yuncheng was suddenly a little nervous. He raised his hand to grab Ning Junyan’s arm but found that his fingers were still holding the cigarette he hadn’t finished smoking, so he threw it aside and gently squeezed Ning Junyan’s sleeve with his fingers, and said, “It’s nothing, don’t worry.”
