Morbid Addiction

Chapter 65

The moment he saw Ning Junyan turn around and leave, Chen Yuncheng was slightly at a loss. He didn’t know what Ning Junyan meant by doing that, and he didn’t know if he should just leave. After hesitating for a moment, he chose to follow Ning Junyan in the direction he had left.

He didn’t stop Ning Junyan, and when he walked to the nurse’s station, he saw Ning Junyan follow the young doctor into a ward.

Chen Yuncheng walked to the door of the ward and saw Ning Junyan standing beside a hospital bed, examining the wound of the patient lying on the bed, with the patient’s family members nervously gathered around him.

Ning Junyan checked carefully for a while, and asked him a few more questions, before whispering some medical advice to the young doctor.

The young doctor nodded and used a notepad to write it down.

Ning Junyan turned around and saw Chen Yuncheng at the door. He walked straight towards Chen Yuncheng and said calmly, “Looking for me?”

Chen Yuncheng retreated from the door of the ward, and asked Ning Junyan, “Are you okay?”

Ning Junyan said, “What do you think?”

After he said these words, Ning Junyan stopped looking at him and walked towards his office.

Chen Yuncheng stood on the spot and looked at his back.

Ning Junyan walked a few steps and stopped, turned around and said, “Not following?”

Chen Yuncheng was a little helpless and followed Ning Junyan to his office.

Back in the office, Ning Junyan took out a bottle of mineral water from the small refrigerator and then sat on his office chair. He unscrewed the bottle cap, drank the water, and stared straight at Chen Yuncheng.

Chen Yuncheng left the office door open and stood at the door. He looked at Ning Junyan, and said, “Are you free tonight?”

Ning Junyan didn’t answer right away. After he finished his water, he lowered his head and put the cap of the mineral water bottle back completely. Then he raised his hand and threw it forward. The empty bottle made a curve in the air and landed perfectly in the trash can near the door.

Chen Yuncheng turned to look at the bottle, and at the same time heard Ning Junyan ask him, “What’s the matter?”

“Do you still remember Boss Sun?” Chen Yuncheng said, “He wants to treat you to dinner tonight, he might have a family member who wants to ask you for help with a medical appointment.”

Ning Junyan looked at Chen Yuncheng and said nothing.

After waiting for a while, Chen Yuncheng said, “If you don’t want to go, I’ll just turn him down for you.”

Ning Junyan asked, “Just for this?”

Chen Yuncheng was silent for a moment, and said: “I want to see you.” After he said that, when he saw that Ning Junyan had no intention of speaking, he continued, “I don’t know if you want to see me, and I don’t know if I’m bothering you.”

As soon as he finished speaking, the head nurse stood at the door and knocked on the open office door.

Chen Yuncheng turned his head to look, but the head nurse didn’t pay attention to him, walked in and put a small medicine bottle on Ning Junyan’s desk, and said, “I brought you painkillers.” After she said this, the head nurse turned and left Ning Junyan’s office.

Ning Jun extended his hand to put away the medicine bottle.

“What painkiller? Are you taking painkillers?” Chen Yuncheng asked him.

Ning Junyan said, “It’s nothing.” Then he raised his hand to look at the time on his watch, stood up and took off his white coat, and walked to the hanger to take off his coat.

       Chen Yuncheng looked at him.

Ning Junyan said, “Let’s go, aren’t we going to have dinner with Boss Sun?”

Chen Yuncheng still asked him, “Why do you need to take painkillers?”

Ning Junyan had already put on his coat, and he said to Chen Yuncheng, “It’s a nervous headache, nothing serious. Let’s go now.”

For the evening meal, Sun Shiliang booked a private room in the restaurant. In addition to inviting Ning Junyan and Chen Yuncheng, he also brought his family members and invited two familiar friends to accompany him.

When Chen Yuncheng and Ning Junyan arrived, Guan Anlin had already picked up Wu Xiaozhu and sat in the private room.

Guan Anlin and Ning Junyan had started a fight the first time they met, and now that he saw Ning Junyan again, his attitude was not friendly.

Ning Junyan didn’t look at him, shook hands with Sun Shiliang politely, and sat down on the seat near Chen Yuncheng.

Sun Shiliang brought two bottles of wine over.

When Chen Yuncheng saw the waiter placing the wine glasses, he said, “Junyan has to go to work tomorrow, so he doesn’t dare to drink too much today, so I’ll drink for him.”

Sun Shiliang wanted something from him, and he had no intention of forcing Ning Junyan to drink. When he heard this, he immediately said, “Dr. Ning’s work is important. So if you can’t drink today, don’t drink, and have more food later.”

       Ning Junyan didn’t say anything.

Today, Sun Shiliang invited guests to dinner for a few things, and he sorted them out clearly in his mind. The first thing was to let everyone toast together to celebrate the opening of the new shop. After a lively time, he toasted Ning Junyan, who was holding the tea in his hand. Sun Shiliang himself drained the wine in his cup in one gulp and asked the hospital about the operation in a low voice. There was an elder in his family who wanted to hire a specialist to do the surgery. There was no shortage of money, but the specialist was out of town, and he couldn’t afford it.

Ning Junyan said, “I’ll ask for you, but this may not necessarily be solved.”

Sun Shiliang said, “I understand, I understand, I just want to ask Dr. Ning to help me find out how long it will take. If it doesn’t work, can you recommend another doctor, so we can make a decision as soon as possible?”

Chen Yuncheng sat next to Ning Junyan and chatted from time to time with the young man opposite him, who was Sun Siliang’s little brother and usually ran business with him, and was familiar with the tobacco and alcohol business. He had met Chen Yuncheng before and found the conversation quite hitting off.

But Chen Yuncheng was actually a little absent-minded, he was still thinking about the painkillers that Ning Junyan had in his pocket when he left the hospital.

He had only heard of the name, but did not know if it was serious, nor did he know if Ning Junyan’s painkillers would have any side effects if he took too many. He kept asking Ning Junyan about it on the way over, but Ning Junyan refused to say anything.

Guan Anlin had to drive back later, Ning Junyan didn’t drink, so Chen Yuncheng drank the most tonight in order to support Sun Shiliang, and he was in a daze after dinner.

When they came out of the restaurant, Sun Shiliang grabbed Chen Yuncheng’s hand, pulled him to the place where he parked, opened the trunk, took out two bottles of wine, and said, “Give it to Dr. Ning for me.”

Chen Yuncheng raised his hand and pressed his swollen and painful forehead, and said to Sun Siliang, “No need, Sun ge.”

Sun Shiliang said, “I want to give it. I want to treat Dr. Ning to dinner again after the matter is over.” After he said that, he put the handbag containing the wine into Chen Yuncheng’s hand, and then said goodbye to the others loudly. With the help of his wife, he got into the car first.

Chen Yuncheng carried the bag and walked to Ning Junyan. At that time, Ning Junyan was already standing in front of the car door, ready to open the door and get in the car.

“Junyan,” Chen Yuncheng called him softly.

He turned his head and looked at Chen Yuncheng.

Chen Yuncheng handed him the wine, “Sun ge gave it to you.”

Ning Junyan looked down and said, “No need, you can return it to Boss Sun.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “It’s a token of his appreciation.”

Ning Junyan said indifferently, “I may not be able to help with this matter, I really don’t need it.” After he said that, he reached out and pulled open the car door.

When Chen Yuncheng saw that he was about to get into the car, he couldn’t help but raise his hand and pull the clothes behind his back.

Ning Junyan stopped and looked back at him.

Chen Yuncheng’s cheeks were flushed, his mind was eroded by alcohol and he was in a mess, he said, “Are you sure you don’t want it?”

Ning Junyanleaned close to his ear and lowered his voice, “I’m doing this for you, so if you feel bad about refusing, take it yourself, I don’t need it.”

At this time, Sun Shiliang and his car left the parking lot on the side of the road first, and Sun Shiliang poked his head from the back seat to say goodbye to them.

Ning Junyan nodded, Chen Yuncheng waved his hand and said, “Sun ge, safe drive.”

When Sun Shiliang’s car drove away, Chen Yuncheng turned around again. He didn’t mention the wine again, but reached out to touch the pocket of Ning Junyan’s coat, and fished out the bottle of painkillers from inside.

He raised his head and tried his best to get close to the street light, trying to see what was written on the medicine bottle, but the light was too dim, and his eyes were blurred, and he couldn’t understand after looking at it for a long time.

Ning Junyan stood silently watching his movements.

Chen Yuncheng put down the medicine bottle, and looked at Ning Junyan, “Is the headache very bad?”

Ning Junyan said, “The pain started when you left.”

Chen Yuncheng showed a sad expression.

There was a loud horn sound behind him, Chen Yuncheng turned his head to look, and saw Guan Anlin driving a van parked on the side of the road, and shouted to him from the lowered window, “Get in the car and go back.”

Chen Yuncheng glanced at Guan Anlin, then turned back to look at Ning Junyan, and asked him, “Does it hurt even now?”

       Ning Junyan said expressionlessly, “Yes.”

Chen Yuncheng asked, “Will it be better if I massage it for you?”

       Ning Junyan said, “Maybe.”

Chen Yuncheng then turned around, walked to the side of the van, and said to Guan Anlin, “You go back first.” After speaking, he noticed Wu Xiaozhu sitting in the back row, and said, “Send Xiaozhu back.”

Guan Anlin put one arm on the car window and asked him, “What are you doing?”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t answer, and stuffed the wine from Sun Shiliang through the car window, “Take it back for me.”

Guan Anlin saw that his eyes were drifting, and asked, “You’ve had too much to drink, haven’t you? How are you going to get back later?”

Chen Yuncheng said: “I can take a taxi, I can go back.”

Guan Anlin looked very worried and glanced over Chen Yuncheng’s shoulder at Ning Junyan who was standing next to the Land Rover.

Chen Yuncheng urged him, “Go quickly.”

Guan Anlin exhaled a stifled breath, “Then you can call me later, if you can’t, I’ll come to pick you up.”

Chen Yuncheng nodded and told him to drive carefully. He took two steps back to watch him drive the car away, and then returned to Ning Junyan’s side.

“Don’t drive with a headache,” he said to Ning Junyan.

Ning Jun extended his hand, “Give me the medicine.”

Chen Yuncheng shook his head, “Don’t take medicine either, let me massage it for you. It won’t hurt anymore if I massage it.”

Ning Junyan looked at him for a while, then closed the driver’s door, went up to the back seat with Chen Yuncheng, and lay down on Chen Yuncheng’s lap.

Chen Yuncheng’s face and eyes were red, and he pressed his fingers against Ning Junyan’s scalp, gently massaging him.

Ning Junyan closed his eyes, and said after a while, “What do you want from me again after you left?”

Chen Yuncheng was so drunk that many things came out easily, he said, “Did we break up?”

Ning Junyan said, “Why did you leave if we didn’t break up?”

Chen Yuncheng raised his head, feeling that his thoughts were too confused, and he couldn’t understand the meaning of Ning Junyan’s words. He then said blankly, “I just don’t think it’s suitable to live together now.” He had planned to stay at Ning Junyan’s place from the very beginning, and he did not resist the development of their relationship to this point, but he still felt that it was too hasty to start living together or even getting married now.

Ning Jun said slowly, “But I can’t help it.”

Chen Yuncheng looked down at him.

Ning Junyan closed his eyes and said, “As soon as you approach, I want to catch you back and tie you up, and never let you leave. But then you will be angry again, and I don’t know what I should do.”

After he said this, Ning Junyan raised his hand to hold one of Chen Yuncheng’s wrists, and he circled his fingers as if putting a handcuff on Chen Yuncheng.

Chen Yuncheng stopped and said, “No, we won’t be in this kind of relationship.”

Ning Junyan withdrew his hand silently.

Chen Yuncheng asked him: “Does it still hurt?”

“It hurts, keep going,” Ning Junyan replied, reaching into the inner pocket of his jacket, and touching the custom-made handcuffs placed there.

Chapter 64

Guan Anlin returned just before the end of the New Year.

After some discussion with Chen Yuncheng, in order to save on the cost of renting the house, he simply installed a bunk bed in the room inside the store. Although the room was not big, neither of them cared about it. It was like returning to the living environment of the previous dormitory.

Before the official opening, Chen Yuncheng followed Sun Shiliang to get the goods and gradually filled the shelves with boxes of cigarettes, alcohol and drinks. He also hired a young girl in her twenties named Wu Xiaozhu to watch the shop and keep accounts.

Sun Shiliang wanted to hand over this store to Chen Yuncheng. He was in the wholesale tobacco and alcohol business, many of which were directly bought from local dealers. He took Chen Yuncheng around and ate a lot of food to introduce people to Chen Yuncheng. In the beginning, he was doing a sales pitch to a few customers to come here, saying that they are all his stores and that he would give the same discount for goods from both sides1it was like they were just going from one place to another place to get acquainted with the people around the market and get them to know and maybe buy products from Sun Shiliang’s place.

When the shop started to stock up, Chen Yuncheng moved out of the daily rental house and lived with Guan Anlin in the inner room of the shop.

Chen Yuncheng slept on the lower bunk, while Guan Anlin slept on the upper bed.

The environment here was not as damp as Chen Yuncheng’s previous kiosk, and there were two people living in the room, so it was not so cold. The bedding on the bed was newly bought, and it was fluffy and soft when they lay on it, which was more comfortable to sleep on than the bed in the daily rental house.

The best thing was that the store was equipped with air conditioning2this is including the units that have heating mode; a big floor-standing air conditioner outside, ready to be put up with a plastic curtain at the shop door in summer, which will keep the inside cool; while on the inside was a small unit hanging, which had not been turned on yet. Chen Yuncheng felt that winter was almost over, and the room was not so cold, so there was no need to turn it on.

Guan Anlin didn’t pay attention to anything, he lay on the upper bunk and watched videos on his mobile phone.

The two of them had been sorting out the goods all day, moving and lifting containers up and down, and now they didn’t want to do anything except lie down and rest.

Chen Yuncheng put his hands behind his head and stared at the depressingly spacious bedpan above him, and thought about how Ning Junyan hadn’t contacted him for a week.

The wound on his wrist had faded, and it might completely disappear in two days, so those violent and extreme actions of Ning Junyan were gradually forgotten by Chen Yuncheng as the injury disappeared, and he remembered again how good Ning Junyan had been to him.

He actually wanted to call Ning Junyan again, but he was hesitant because he was afraid that Ning Junyan would not answer. He didn’t know what Ning Junyan was thinking, if Ning Junyan didn’t want to see him, he was afraid that his phone call would become harassment to the other party.

While he was entertaining all sorts of foolish ideas, Guan Anlin poked his head out from the upper bunk to look at him. Chen Yuncheng was frowning, but before he could loosen his frown, Guan Anlin saw his expression, and asked him, “What’s wrong?”

Chen Yuncheng replied, “It will be officially opened tomorrow.”

Guan Anlin let out an “En” and said, “Isn’t it pretty good?”

“Yeah, it’s pretty good,” Chen Yuncheng’s tone sounded like he was lamenting.

Guan Anlin pulled his head back and after a while said, “My sister will be taking the university entrance exam in June this year.”

Chen Yuncheng knew that his sister had good grades and was top-notch in the local middle school, so he asked, “What university does she want to go to?”

Guan Anlin said, “She wants to come here for the exams, and I want her to go here too.”

Chen Yuncheng chatted with him absentmindedly, “It’s good to come over, you siblings can take care of each other.”

Guan Anlin was silent for a while, and said to Chen Yuncheng, “You can meet her when the time comes.”

Chen Yuncheng sighed and rolled over to lie on his side, “Even if we are not talking about age, do you think your sister, a college student, would look at a man like me who is almost thirty, has no car or house, and is still working for someone else to look after the shop?” When he said this, Chen Yuncheng was a bit baffled. He thought about Ning Junyan was not only a university student, but also seemed to be some kind of doctoral degree who had also studied abroad, but because his head was not right, he fell in love with him.

Guan Anlin said, “I’m burning up at the thought of her dating another man in the future.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Your way of thinking is not normal.” After he said that, he was not in the mood to chat with Guan Anlin anymore. He closed his eyes and said, “I’m going to sleep.”

The next morning, the tobacco shop was officially open for business. The flower baskets Chen Yuncheng had ordered were delivered early in the morning and placed on both sides of the shop’s front door, although no firecrackers could be set off, the atmosphere still looked lively.

Customers who had previously booked cigarettes, alcohol and beverages through Boss Sun, were to start their official deliveries today.

An old van was parked in front of the shop, which Sun Siliang had given them specifically for deliveries. In the morning, Chen Yuncheng and Guan Anlin took stock of the goods and moved them to the car one by one, ready to deliver the goods to the customer.

For the rest of the time, Chen Yuncheng and the newly recruited Wu Xiaozhu continued to take inventory of the goods in the store and kept making adjustments to the goods on the shelves.

This evening, Sun Shiliang asked Chen Yuncheng and the others to have dinner together, saying that it was to celebrate the opening of the new store and asked Chen Yuncheng to call Guan Anlin and Wu Xiaozhu together.

Before hanging up the phone, Sun Shiliang said to Chen Yuncheng, “Xiao Chen, can you call Dr. Ning as well?”

Chen Yuncheng froze for a moment and said, “I don’t know if he’s free today.”

Sun Shiliang said, “That’s okay, ask him for me. If he can’t today, I will invite him to dinner another day. There’s an elderly person at home who needs an operation and I want to consult Dr. Ning.”

Sun Shiliang had helped Chen Yuncheng too much over this period of time, and Chen Yuncheng had no way to refuse him, nor was he willing to give him a perfunctory answer, so he had to say, “I’ll ask him.”

When he hung up the phone, Guan Anlin had already opened the van and got into the driver’s seat, he honked the horn and said to Chen Yuncheng, “Get in the car.”

Chen Yuncheng nodded, turned around and gave Wu Xiaozhu a few words, pulled open the passenger door of the van and got in, and went to deliver the goods with Guan Anlin.

Neither of them was familiar with the delivery address, so Chen Yuncheng took the delivery slip in his hand, entered the address into his mobile phone and opened the navigation.

As Guan Anlin drove on, he occasionally turned his head and saw that Chen Yuncheng’s expression did not look too good and asked, “What’s wrong?”

       Chen Yuncheng said, “It’s nothing.”

Guan Anlin found some topics to talk about with him, “Boss Sun has introduced his distributors and clients to you, so when we have saved up enough capital, we will poach his clients and start our own business.”

       Chen Yuncheng glanced at him.

Guan Anlin said, “It’s better than working for someone else.”

Chen Yuncheng had been busy all morning, and he still didn’t feel relaxed even now. He leaned on the back of the chair and said, “Sun ge has helped me so much, so I will continue to help him as long as he needs it.”

Guan Anlin hummed lightly and did not say anything.

Chen Yuncheng remembered that he had a chat with Sun Shiliang once after drinking, saying that Sun Shiliang trusted him so much that he dared not let him down.

At that time, Sun Shiliang was quite indifferent and told Chen Yuncheng to broaden his horizons, not put too much emphasis on profits, and not to care too much about gains and losses. He also drank a lot of wine, patted Chen Yuncheng on the shoulder, and said, “I’m a person who makes friends without expecting something in return. After a while, when you need help, you will find that all your friends are there, and they are willing to take the initiative to repay you. “

Chen Yuncheng could feel a little bit of free-spirited energy in Sun Shiliang that did not belong to this era, and said, “Not all people are like that nowadays.”

Sun Shiliang put his arms around his shoulders at the time, “Aren’t you just like that? You said why I gave you a hand, I thought you were like me and worthy of a sincere friend. Whether you can make money or how much money you can make is not important now. If this business is not doing well, we will replace it with another one, as long as there are friends, there will be a way to go.”

Chen Yuncheng felt that he yearned for the free-spirited way of Sun Shiliang.

They delivered the goods to the customer, and after unloading the goods from the car, the other party only had the middle-aged lady in the store, and Chen Yuncheng took the trouble to help her move the goods in and put them on the shelves.

The lady thanked them repeatedly and gave them two bottles of mineral water after signing the form on their way out.

Chen Yuncheng took off his coat when he was carrying goods. He sat in the car and unscrewed the water bottle to drink a mouthful of water.

Guan Anlin said, “We’re done with the job after we unload the goods. We need to charge extra money if we have to help move the goods next time.”

Chen Yuncheng raised his hand to wipe the water stains around his mouth, “It’s just a favour, don’t worry about it so much.”

Guan Anlin said a few words in a low voice, started the car and left.

After a while, Chen Yuncheng felt that the sweat on his body had subsided, and he also cooled down. He reached for his coat and put it on, and said, “After delivering the goods, take me to the hospital, and go back first. Then, take Xiaozhu to have dinner with Sun ge at night.”

“What are you going to the hospital for?”

Chen Yuncheng looked ahead and sat quietly for a while before saying, “Sun ge told me to invite a friend over there, so I’m going to the hospital to invite the friend.”

“Which friend?” Guan Anlin couldn’t contain his curiosity and asked for more information.

Chen Yuncheng said, “You’ve seen him before, it’s the friend that lent me his house to stay for a while before.”

“Oh,” Guan Anlin understood, and his tone was not very friendly, “The one that drives the Land Rover.”

Despite his reluctance, Guan Anlin still dropped off Chen Yuncheng at the hospital entrance and drove off by himself.

Chen Yuncheng stood at the door and looked at the gate of the hospital where people were coming and going. He took out his mobile phone and hesitated for a while, but he still didn’t call Ning Junyan and walked directly into the hospital.

According to the frequency of Ning Junyan’s night shift, he should be on the day shift today.

Chen Yuncheng went to the floor of Ning Junyan’s department in the inpatient building. It was just after the new year, and the hospital was already full of patients, and there was almost no room for extra beds in the corridor.

All the nurses were busy, and no one noticed him. He looked like an ordinary family member of a patient, and walked along the corridor to the door of Ning Junyan’s office, raised his hand and knocked on the door, but there was no response inside.

He stepped back, went to the resident doctor’s office, and asked a doctor who was walking outside, “May I ask if Chief Ning is in today?”

The doctor said, “Yes, I guess, he’s here for all the morning rounds.”

Chen Yuncheng asked again, “So is he in surgery now?”

The doctor turned around and asked someone, and told Chen Yuncheng, “He should still be in surgery.”

Chen Yuncheng thanked him, walked to the bench in the corridor closest to Ning Junyan’s office and sat down, waiting for Ning Junyan.

A nurse stopped in front of him and looked at him curiously.

       Chen Yuncheng nodded at her.

The nurse smiled and said, “I’ve seen you before, you’re Chief Ning’s friend, right? Are you looking for him?”

Chen Yuncheng stood up and said, “Yes, when will he probably be back?”

The nurse said, “The operation is ongoing. But it seems to be taking quite a long time, so I guess it’s almost time to be done. Just wait a little longer.” The nurse left after speaking.

Chen Yuncheng then sat down again, leaned back and waited. He took out his mobile phone and glanced at it, and thought that if he couldn’t wait for Ning Junyan until six o’clock, he would only go to Sun Shiliang first, and try to contact Ning Junyan later.

In the end, he waited for about half an hour and saw Ning Junyan’s figure appearing in the corridor.

Ning Junyan was wearing a white coat, his hair was slightly damp, and his tall and straight figure was slowly approaching from a distance. When Chen Yuncheng saw him, he obviously saw Chen Yuncheng too, but no expression could be seen on his face.

Chen Yuncheng stood up and was just about to speak when a young doctor with a medical record book stopped Ning Junyan’s path and opened the book in his hand to say something to him.

Ning Junyan withdrew his gaze from Chen Yuncheng, looked at the medical record in front of him, flipped through the pages with his hands, turned around and followed the young doctor out.

Chapter 63

Time seemed to freeze briefly between the two of them. Chen Yuncheng kept looking at Ning Junyan. He felt that a long time had passed, but in fact, it was only a minute or two.

Nevertheless, Ning Junyan let go of Chen Yuncheng’s hand. He remained silent, threw Chen Yuncheng’s wrinkled jeans on the edge of the bathtub, and untied the belt that tied Chen Yuncheng’s wrist.

Because it was too tight, it took Ning Junyan himself some time to loosen the belt completely.

Chen Yuncheng lowered his head and saw two deep marks on his wrists, which were already red and purple in colour.

Ning Junyan stretched out his hand to pick up Chen Yun Cheng, who was still kneeling in the bathtub. Chen Yuncheng’s body was visibly tense, and he pushed Ning Junyan with his hand, who said, “I won’t touch you.”

Chen Yuncheng was carried to sit on the bed and then watched Ning Junyan go into the bathroom and take out his pants.

Ning Junyan squatted down beside the bed and helped Chen Yuncheng put on his pants.

Chen Yuncheng could have done it himself, but he didn’t stop Ning Junyan. He knew that Ning Junyan was feeling bad, and he himself was feeling equally bad.

The tools that Ning Junyan had brought back were still scattered on the bed, and Chen Yuncheng felt upset after seeing them.

After he helped Chen Yuncheng put on his trousers, Ning Junyan went to get Chen Yuncheng’s coat. The corners of his eyes were still slightly red, but his expression was cold, and after putting on the coat to Chen Yuncheng, he said, “Let’s go, wherever you want to go, I will drive you.”

       Chen Yuncheng nodded.

Ning Junyan drove Chen Yuncheng away. Chen Yuncheng planned to go to the commercial market to find a daily rental house first, so he asked Ning Junyan to take him directly to the market, but Ning Junyan said nothing and drove Chen Yuncheng there in silence.

It was only the seventh day of the Chinese New Year, and although many people had already started working, for many others, the year was not yet over.

There were not many cars on the streets, and the area of the trade market was also deserted.

Chen Yuncheng sat in the passenger seat, rubbed his strangled wrist subconsciously, and stared out of the car window, mentally exhausted.

Ning Junyan parked his car in the parking lot outside the trade market, which was empty, with hardly any cars.

Chen Yuncheng looked at him and said, “Thank you.”

Ning Junyan opened the car door, got out of the car and helped Chen Yuncheng take out the suitcase.

Chen Yuncheng took the suitcase and put it at his feet. When he saw that Ning Junyan turned to get into the car, he reached out and grabbed Ning Junyan’s sleeve.

Ning Junyan stopped and looked down at his hands.

Chen Yuncheng said, “There is one thing I haven’t had time to say before. That Yu Jie. Tell your mother to be careful about him.”

“Which Yu Jie?” Ning Junyan’s voice was a little hoarse.

Chen Yuncheng said, “The one who was eating at your house that day. Although I don’t know what he is doing now, he had cheated on my friend before and was doing illegal business at that time. I’m afraid that something will happen if your mother does business with him.”

Ning Junyan nodded, he didn’t say anything and opened the driver’s door to get in the car.

Chen Yuncheng had been standing on the side of the road looking at him, with two suitcases leaning against his legs.

After Ning Junyan got into the car, he didn’t look this way again. He reversed the car sharply, then turned the car around, and drove the car out of the parking lot.

The speed was too fast, Chen Yuncheng subconsciously stepped forward to tell him to drive carefully, but he couldn’t say it out.

Chen Yuncheng knew that there was no way to get out of Ning Junyan’s place easily today, but he hadn’t expected it to come to such a state.

When Ning Junyan was being harsh, he was very angry. He couldn’t accept Ning Junyan treating him like this. At that time, every word said at that time was from his heart, but once Ning Junyan compromised, he immediately softened his heart, like he had done something wrong to Ning Junyan. The bruises on his wrist were still clearly visible and he was already starting to feel guilty.

Chen Yuncheng pushed his two suitcases and walked slowly outside the parking lot.

The trade market was on the outskirts of the northern city. It was a newly developed site with very few high-rise buildings around it. There were still old buildings and narrow streets on the outskirts of the city. It was easy to rent a room in such a place, and it was all very cheap.

Chen Yuncheng rented a daily rental room, which the landlord had partitioned from a large room, with no windows and only a pale white fluorescent light overhead.

He had little appetite for lunch, and Chen Yuncheng didn’t leave the room until evening to find something to eat.

The New Year was not yet over, and many shops were open during the day but closed early in the afternoon, so it was not easy to find a small restaurant that was open.

As Chen Yuncheng walked outside, he didn’t know if it was in his mind, but he felt that the temperature here was even lower than in the city centre, and when the cold wind blew over, he unconsciously wrapped his thin down jacket tightly.

Later, he found a small restaurant, which was opened by an outlander. When he sat down to eat, Chen Yuncheng chatted with the owner. The owner said that he hadn’t been back for the New Year, and the restaurant was open for the whole New Year.

He asked for a gaifan1Gaifan or gaijiaofan is a type of dish in Chinese cuisine typically offered in low-cost establishments. It consists of a fish, meat, or vegetable topping served over rice..

At this time, he was the only customer in the store, and the owner put the plate of gaifan on his table, and sat not far away, staring at the empty street outside in a daze.

Chen Yuncheng mixed the rice with a spoon.

The boss turned his head and saw the mark on his wrist. He let out an “ouch”, and asked, “What happened to your hand?”

By this time, the strangle marks were completely bruised and looked a little gruesome.

Chen Yuncheng smiled and said, “It’s nothing, I accidentally hurt it.”

The owner asked him, “You’re working before the end of the year?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Yes, I have to eat.”

The owner nodded and seemed to empathise with him. He lifted one leg and bent it over the other, saying, “Money is not easy to earn.”

After eating, Chen Yuncheng went back to the daily rental place alone.

At this time, the sky was completely dark, and most of the houses on the side of the road were closed and their lights were turned off. Only the cold white street lamps illuminated the road in front of them.

When Chen Yuncheng walked halfway, his phone rang. He stopped, took out his phone and took a look, and saw that it was Guan Anlin calling.

After he answered the phone, the two chatted for a while, Guan Anlin heard that he had moved out, and asked him if he was going to start work.

Chen Yuncheng said, “Boss Sun said that some workers would be back tomorrow, so he asked me to keep an eye at it. After the Chinese New Year, the store can almost open for business.”

Guan Anlin heard the words and said, “Then I’ll come back early.”

After they chatted a few more words, the two hung up the phone.

Chen Yuncheng was still standing on the side of the road, with a lonely back. He swiped his fingers in the phone address book for a long time, finally found Ning Junyan’s number, and called Ning Junyan.

He had said before that even if he moved out temporarily, his relationship with Ning Junyan would still not change. He didn’t know whether Ning Junyan believed him or not, but he hoped to put Ning Junyan’s mind at ease.

But Ning Junyan didn’t answer the call.

Chen Yuncheng raised his head and looked at the street back and forth in a daze. He waited for a long time until the phone hung up automatically, then he put the phone back into his trouser pocket, put his hands into his jacket pockets and continued walking towards the front.

He had grown up with more experiences than others, and he often told himself to be content, or he would be unhappy. So he asked for less than other children, and he felt satisfied when his foster parents gave him a bite to eat.

It was not that he was cheaper than others, it was just that he would not be satisfied if he expected too much. So it was better to ask for less and live happily instead.

He used to tell others that he wanted to find an ordinary girl to be with, but he had never found one, and he had always resisted the relationships, fearing that the more he invested, the more he would be hurt in the end. He sometimes felt that his way of thinking was unhealthy. This might be related to the fact that he had no parents and no complete family. On the surface, he was all about giving and did not need others to reciprocate, but in reality, he was afraid of not getting anything in return, so it was better not to ask for extravagant things.

Ning Junyan’s way of thinking was also unhealthy in Chen Yuncheng’s view. Chen Yuncheng thought of his parents and the four years they lived and grew up together. Perhaps Ning’s dysfunction was also due to his lack of a sound family.

So they were both very insecure and while Chen Yuncheng’s lack of security led him to resist, Ning Junyan was overly solicitous. Their mental health brought them to where they are today. Chen Yuncheng just wanted to take a step back to calm himself down, but he didn’t know if Ning Junyan had decided to give up.

       Chen Yuncheng was very sad.

At the same time, Ning Junyan had a headache. He sat on the bed alone, wrapped the metal chain around his wrist twice, and watched the end of the chain hang down, dangling in front of him.

He also ordered a pair of handcuffs and a collar, both of which were made of metal and covered with a layer of soft leather. Although he let Chen Yuncheng go, he did not intend to return them.

The headache started in the afternoon. He was standing by the bed trying to pack up the things in the toolbox, but he started to have a headache after half of the packing. He didn’t continue and just lay down on the bed and fell asleep.

It was already dark when he woke up, and Ning Junyan did not want to eat. He sat on the bed and fiddled with the chain he bought. He originally planned for one end to be fixed into the wall, and the other end was movable and could be replaced with handcuffs or a collar that could be worn on Chen Yuncheng’s body, so that Chen Yuncheng could move around from the room to the bathroom, and the lock cannot be unlocked without his key.

He knew it was against the law. He had studied for many years, and his legal knowledge was more abundant than many people, but when he was doing this, his mind was empty, and his only thought was not to let Chen Yuncheng leave.

He was not afraid of breaking the law, but he was afraid that Chen Yuncheng would not forgive him, so he still failed to do so.

When the mobile phone on the bedside table rang, Ning Junyan turned his head to take a look. He saw Chen Yuncheng’s name, but he didn’t answer it.

At this moment, he had a headache again. He threw the metal chain aside, went to the medicine box outside to find a painkiller, and then went back to the room and slept directly on the side where Chen Yuncheng slept. The pillow seemed to still smell of Chen Yuncheng, Ning Junyan lay on his side, pulling the quilt over his head. Before he fell asleep, he thought about how he had to work tomorrow and how he had scheduled an operation in the morning, and how his custom-made collar was coming soon, so he really wanted to put it on Chen Yuncheng himself…

Chapter 62

Chen Yuncheng woke up very early in the morning, he packed his things for the last time, carried the suitcases to the living room, ate breakfast and washed the dishes by himself, and waited for Ning Junyan to come back.

He knew that the conversation with Ning Junyan today would not be so smooth, but he had no intention of leaving quietly, without even leaving a word of explanation to Ning Junyan.

This morning, however, Ning Junyan came back from work a little later than usual.

Chen Yuncheng heard the sound of the key opening the door, glanced at the suitcase he had placed at the door and stood up nervously.

The key turned twice in the door before the door slowly opened. Ning Junyan came back from the outside wearing a dark long trench coat and carrying a toolbox.

After he entered, he stood at the door to change his shoes, and he only needed to look up to see Chen Yuncheng’s suitcase, but he didn’t seem to see it.

When he had finished changing his shoes, Ning Junyan walked in with the toolbox and saw Chen Yuncheng standing next to the sofa.

       Chen Yuncheng called him, “Junyan.”

Ning Junyan casually put down the toolbox against the wall, walked up to Chen Yuncheng, put an arm around him, kissed him on the cheek, and asked, “Have you had breakfast yet?”

Chen Yuncheng could feel the cool air from outside still on Ning Junyan’s body, but the kiss was warm, and he replied, “I’ve eaten.” Then he asked, “What about you?”

       “Ate in the hospital.”

Ning Junyan turned around and went back to pick up the toolbox to walk into the room.

Chen Yuncheng held him back, “I have something to tell you.”

Ning Junyan stopped and turned back to look at him, “What’s wrong?”

Chen Yuncheng took a deep breath and said, “I’ve decided to move out.” After he finished speaking, he kept looking at Ning Junyan’s face, worried that Ning Junyan would be angry.

In the end, Ning Junyan acted calmly and asked him, “Where are you going to move?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “I plan to rent an apartement for a few days first, and then when the new shop at the trade market opens, I’ll go over and live there..”

Ning Junyan shook his head, “No.” His tone was too flat, like a father rejecting his spoiled son.

Chen Yuncheng knew he wouldn’t come to a conclusion today without being a little more resolute, he said, “I’m not discussing it with you, I have already made a decision.”

Ning Junyan put down the toolbox, held his hand, and said, “Then what if I still disagree?”

Chen Yuncheng lowered his head and said uncomfortably, “I’m sorry.”

Ning Junyan held his hand and did not let go, his brows slightly furrowed, as if he was in some distress.

Chen Yuncheng saw that he had been silent, and said, “Even if we don’t live together, it doesn’t mean that our relationship has changed. We are both in the same city, and we can meet often. It’s just that if we keep our distance, both me and you can calm down and take a good look at the relationship.”

Ning Junyan still held his hand without letting go, as if he was not listening to him at all.

Chen Yuncheng felt that he had already made what he had to say very clear. If he compromised because of Ning Junyan’s attitude now, he might not be able to get out of this door, so he tried to break away from Ning Junyan’s hand.

“I put the key on the bedside table in the room, so take care of it.”

Just when Chen Yuncheng had almost pulled out his hand, Ning Junyan suddenly grabbed his wrist forcefully, this time with more force than just now, and Chen Yuncheng found that he didn’t even have room to twist his wrist.

       Ning Junyan said, “Let’s talk.”

It was good that he was willing to talk to him, so Chen Yuncheng stopped struggling and looked at him, “You talk.”

Ning Junyan asked him, “Do you think this is too far away from where you will work in the future?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “It’s just one reason.”

Ning Junyan said, “Then let’s buy a house near the commercial market, do you think it’s good?”

Chen Yuncheng couldn’t help but want to sigh, “No, this is not the way to solve the problem.”

“Is leaving me the solution to the problem?” Ning Junyan asked him, his pair of black eyes looked calm, but his tone seemed to carry aggravation.

Chen Yuncheng said, “Isn’t it okay to separate temporarily? It’s like I used to live in the kiosk, you can come over often. Originally, I was also staying temporarily, so it doesn’t make sense to come in and never leave.”

Ning Junyan said, “I don’t want you to go.”

“Calm down and think about it, not only now, but also in the future, there are many things you shouldn’t do in a hotheaded and reckless manner.”

       “You don’t want me anymore.”

Chen Yuncheng suddenly stopped what he wanted to say.

Ning Junyan repeated again very softly, “You don’t want me anymore. Just like that time, when I was clearly holding you, but you still wanted to push me away.”

Chen Yuncheng knew that he was referring to the time when they separated sixteen years ago. Although he was two years younger than Ning Junyan, he always felt that he had the responsibility to take care of Ning Junyan like an older brother. He didn’t want to push Ning Junyan away, but what could he do? Let Ning Junyan go to the welfare school with him, and then go out to work at a young age? At that time, the sadness and grievance in his heart were probably no less than that of Ning Junyan, but he was still willing to take responsibility. He said to Ning Junyan, “I’m sorry, it’s because I’m not capable.”

He was not capable enough. He watched as they take Ning Junyan away, as Guan Anlin was arrested and put in jail, and as Zhou Yan walked into the police station to surrender. He too was not too willing, but in the end, he was powerless.

Ning Junyan said to him, “It doesn’t matter, as long as I don’t let go.”

Chen Yuncheng wanted to say that was not the case, but before he could speak, Ning Junyan suddenly grabbed his wrist and pulled him into the room.

“What are you doing?” Chen Yuncheng was suddenly a little alarmed. Ning Junyan’s strength was too great. He had never been able to win a physical battle against him. At this time he tried hard to stand still and stop, but he still couldn’t help being pulled forward by Ning Junyan.

Ning Junyan kept pulling him into the bedroom, frowned and whispered, “The things I ordered haven’t arrived yet.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Let me go!”

Ning Junyan pushed Chen Yuncheng down onto the large bed in the bedroom, rolled him over and told him to lie on his stomach, bent one leg over the back of his waist, pulled his hands over his head, and in a sharp move, pulled off his own belt and tied Chen Yuncheng’s hands and wrists.

Chen Yuncheng was angry and anxious, and shouted loudly, “Ning Junyan, are you crazy?”

Ning Junyan lowered his head and kissed the back of Chen Yun Cheng’s neck and the side of his ear, “Don’t be afraid.” He then straightened up, still holding Chen Yuncheng down with his knees, took off his long coat and throw it away, and pulled up the sleeves of his shirt inside, revealing a slender arms with visible pale blue veins.

Then he reached under Chen Yuncheng’s body, unbuttoned and zippered Chen Yuncheng’s jeans, his slender fingers held the edge of the trousers and pulled the trousers and underpants together.

During this process, Chen Yuncheng was struggling all the time. He tried to kick Ning Junyan with his legs, but Ning Junyan stood beside him and avoided it. After he took off Chen Yuncheng’s pants, he pulled Chen Yuncheng up from the bed and walked towards the bathroom.

Chen Yuncheng staggered along pulled by him, and said angrily, “Ning Junyan, are you crazy?”

Ning Junyan didn’t say anything as he pulled Chen Yuncheng into the bathroom and put him into the bathtub with his arms around his waist.

Chen Yuncheng raised his leg and kicked Ning Junyan’s hip hard, but his own foot slipped and he fell backwards.

However, Ning Junyan’s body just swayed, then he hugged Chen Yuncheng and said, “Be careful.” After he said that, Ning Junyan used Chen Yuncheng’s jeans to wrap around the strap on his wrist and tied him to the bathtub hose.

Chen Yuncheng was furious and tried to untie the knot that Ning Junyan had tied with his hands, but both hands were tied so tightly that it was difficult to move his fingers.

Ning Junyan then turned away and walked towards the outside of the room.

Chen Yuncheng did not speak and concentrated on trying to untie his tied hands.

The heating in the room had obviously been turned up, and Ning Junyan came in from outside with his toolbox and placed it directly on the bed.

Chen Yuncheng panted and looked out from the bathroom door to see Ning Junyan take out a long metal chain from inside, and then took out an electric drill. He stood by the bed, compared the diameters of the drill bit and the expansion screw, then stare at the wall at the head of the bed and choose where to drill the hole.

“Ning Junyan, are you crazy enough?” Chen Yuncheng shouted, “Are you trying to lock me up here? How long can you keep me locked up?”

Ning Junyan didn’t reply, plugged in the electric drill, turned on the switch, and soon the room was filled with the loud noise of the drill drilling holes.

Chen Yuncheng’s voice was also drowned out by the noise, and in a somewhat exhausted trance, he waited for the sound of the electric drill to stop and added, “Can you lock me up for the rest of my life? My friends will be looking for me and they’ll call the police! Too many people know I live with you, when the police will come, your own future will be ruined, and I will never want to see you!”

Ning Junyan had originally stuffed the expansion screw into the hole and was about to tap it tightly with a hammer in his hand, but he stopped when he heard Chen Yuncheng’s last words, and turned his head to look at Chen Yuncheng.

Chen Yuncheng knelt down in the bathtub with bare legs, and his eyes were red, “Is this how you wanted to treat me? You? You want me to hate you for the rest of my life?”

Ning Junyan was not really stupid, he could naturally think of anything Chen Yuncheng could think of. No place was safe, nor he could not make Chen Yuncheng disappear and not let others go looking for him, and the hardest part was that he could not make Chen Yuncheng not hate him for it.

When he saw Ning Junyan stop, Chen Yuncheng’s voice became softer, but his voice was already hoarse as he said, “Let me go. Yanyan, come here and let me go.”

With the hammer squeezed in his hand, Ning Jun Yan looked at him quietly, and after a while, walked towards the bathroom.

He walked into the bathroom and did not rush to let go of Chen Yuncheng, but sat down cross-legged on the floor as he asked Chen Yuncheng, “Can you not leave?”

Chen Yuncheng  could have given in and temporarily coaxed Ning Junyan for a while, but what happened today instead made him even more determined in his original thoughts, and he said, “I want to go.”

The hammer in Ning Junyan’s hand rolled to the ground, he raised his hands to squeeze the edge of the bathtub, and looked at Chen Yuncheng, “Then I’ll tie you up, and you won’t be able to leave this room from now on.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Then if you must tie me up for the rest of your life and don’t let me leave, and you must also be optimistic about me not to let me die, otherwise I will never see you again in the future.”

Ning Junyan’s expression was always indifferent, but his eyes gradually turned red, “You really don’t want me anymore?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “If you don’t let me go today, I won’t want you.”

Ning Junyan’s gaze turned to Chen Yuncheng’s tied hands.

Chapter 61

The moment he saw Ning Junyan, Chen Yuncheng was a little nervous. He stood up from the floor and said, “I gotta answer this call.”

Ning Junyan stood at the door, blocking his way out, “Why you hit the wall?”

Chen Yuncheng touched his head subconsciously, and could only respond thougtlessly, “Just randomly hitting..”

Ning Junyan stretched out a hand towards him, “Come here.”

Chen Yuncheng walked up to him.

Ning Junyan raised his hands to cup his face, kissed the place where he bumped just now, and said, “Don’t bump my things casually.”

Chen Yuncheng blushed, “Is everything yours?”

“Well,” Ning Junyan didn’t let go the hand holding Chen Yuncheng’s face, slightly lifted Chen Yuncheng’s head to meet his own, “I’m warning you, don’t make little moves behind my back.”

Chen Yuncheng felt that his tone was a bit cold, so he raised his head and looked straight into his eyes. With Ning Junyan’s back to the light, and his entire face was hidden in the darkness, so he couldn’t see clearly, but his hands holding Chen Yuncheng’s face were strong enough that Chen Yuncheng couldn’t break free easily, so he could only say, “What little move? “

“Anything I don’t agree with,” Ning Junyan replied, “For example, hitting your head.” After he said that, he pressed Chen Yuncheng’s head and blew lightly on top of his head, “What if you hit your head silly?”

Chen Yuncheng couldn’t help but slapped his hands away, “Knock it off.”

Ning Junyan finally let him go.

Chen Yuncheng sidled past him, “I’m going to take a shower first.”

The warm water jets rushed down from the top of his head. Chen Yuncheng stood in the bathtub and closed his eyes. He held his breath and let the hot water wash over his face. After a while, he turned his head away and wiped off the water on his face with his hands. He then took a few breaths.

He had been putting it off until now, and he had decided to move out. But he was a little afraid to talk to Ning Junyan, he knew that Ning Junyan would not agree, and he was afraid that Ning Junyan would object too strongly. He and Ning Junyan had argued over this matter several times, and every time he conceded the defeat and his heart softened. Every time he got tough, he was no match for Ning Junyan, so he began to consider a different way of communicating with Ning Junyan.

Chen Yuncheng was lying on the bed when he heard the sound of water in the bathroom stop. After a while, Ning Junyan lifted the quilt and lay down on the bed with cool and refreshing steam still on his body.

The lamp in the room went out and it was plunged into darkness.

Chen Yuncheng cheered himself up silently, rolled over and sat on Ning Junyan’s lap, groped for his face in the darkness and bent down to kiss him on the lips.

Ning Junyan stretched his hand to hold Chen Yuncheng’s waist, and hooked his fingers through the hem of his pyjama top, gently tickling him against his skin.

After a while, when Chen Yuncheng raised his head, and Ning Junyan asked him, “Do you want it?”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t know how to answer, he kind of wanted to tell Ning Junyan to shut up and stop talking, then he bent down on Ning Junyan and said, “You are the most important person in my life.”

Ning Junyan raised his hand to stroke his hair.

Chen Yuncheng said, “Whether we live together or not will not change our relationship.”

Ning Junyan’s fingers slipped onto his ears, and his fingertips gently rubbing the soft contours of his ear, “So?”

“So,” even though he knew that Ning Junyan couldn’t see it, Chen Yuncheng’s eyes became warmer, “You don’t have to be so eager to live together and get married in a hurry, we can take our time.”

Ning Junyan asked him in a calm tone, “Then can I put it in?”

Chen Yuncheng paused and said, “I’m just a little scared.”

Ning Junyan said, “Don’t be afraid, just open the drawer and take a look.”

Chen Yuncheng felt strange. He fumbled with his hands in the darkness to find the first drawer of the bedside table and opened it, but nothing could be seen. He reached over and turned on the light, squinting the moment the light came through, then saw the drawer of lubricant and condoms.

Ning Junyan said, “Although it is very big, it won’t hurt you.”

Chen Yuncheng closed the drawer hard, not wanting to look at Ning Junyan’s face, and reached out to turn off the light. He sat on Ning Junyan’s waist and sighed, “I didn’t mean this.”

He always had some qualms in his heart, as if once he fully opened his body, there was no way for him to turn back. Just as he was unwilling to accept Ning Junyan’s marriage proposal, Chen Yuncheng suddenly thought sadly that he was still not 100% committed to this relationship, and was always giving himself a way out.

He felt that he was sorry for Ning Junyan.

Driven by his sad emotions, Chen Yuncheng bent down and hugged Ning Junyan’s neck, kissed his cheek and lips, and called him affectionately, “Yanyan.”

Ning Junyan hugged his waist and rolled over, pressing him underneath him and kissing him on the lips.

On the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, Chen Yuncheng slept deeply on Ning Junyan’s bed and did not wake up until it was completely bright outside.

The moment he woke up, he was a little dazed, because Ning Junyan didn’t hug him as tightly as before. He turned around and looked to the side in a trance, and saw that Ning Junyan was actually still on the bed, but he had sat up and was looking up at the ceiling.

“What are you looking at?” Chen Yuncheng felt strange, following his gaze, and saw that there was nothing on the ceiling.

Ning Junyan didn’t answer, but his gaze dropped on Chen Yuncheng’s face for a moment before turning away again and looking in the direction of the bed.

Chen Yuncheng sat up and propped his hands on the bed, “Junyan?”

Ning Junyan let out an “En”, but didn’t look at him, and reached out to press the wall at the head of the bed.

Chen Yuncheng was baffled, he got up and went to the bathroom by himself. When he came out, Ning Junyan was no longer in the room.

Instead of going out to buy breakfast, Chen Yuncheng went to the kitchen to cook two bowls of fried egg noodles. Before he entered the kitchen, he saw that Ning Junyan had his computer on in his study, but when he finished cooking the noodles and went out, the study was already empty.

When Chen Yuncheng returned to Ning Junyan’s room, he heard a movement coming from the bathroom. He walked over and saw a tape measure stretched out on the floor, stretching from the bed to the bathroom.

And Ning Junyan was in the bathroom, pulling the tape measure to record the length.

“What are you doing?” Chen Yuncheng looked at him blankly.

Ning Junyan stood up, put back the tape measure, and said calmly, “I’m measuring the length.”

“Why do you need to measure the length?” Chen Yuncheng found it difficult to understand.

Ning Junyan said to him, “I want to redecorate.”

Chen Yuncheng asked him, “Why do you want to decorate?”

       Ning Junyan said, “For convenience.”

After breakfast, Ning Junyan went back to the study and stared at the computer, without Chen Yuncheng knew what he was doing. Chen Yuncheng stood at the door of the study anxiously and looked at him for a while.

Ning Junyan didn’t ignore him, looked up at him, and asked, “Do you want me to come over and hold you?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “No need.” He withdrew, went to the balcony and called Sun Shiliang.

The New Year was not over yet, and the renovation workers had not returned, so the new shop renovation at the trade market was still on hold for the time being.

Sun Shiliang said that the shop renovation would be quick and that it would be ready in a few days after the New Year. He asked Chen Yuncheng to look at the container furniture then, and he can order it directly after choosing it.

“Why are you in such a hurry?” Sun Shiliang asked him.

Chen Yuncheng said, “Nothing, I just want to find something to do.”

“Don’t worry, just rest for a few days.” From his side, Sun Shiliang could be heard starting mahjong game early in the morning, with a relaxed tone, “If you really don’t have any money to use, this brother will lend you some first.”

Chen Yuncheng smiled, “I still have money, Sun ge, don’t worry about it.”

Sun Shiliang said, “Then have fun, don’t worry about work when it’s Chinese New Year.”

After hanging up the phone, Chen Yuncheng decided, after careful consideration, to pack up his things on the day when Ning Junyan was on duty on the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, so that he could officially move out on the seventh day when Ning Junyan returned from his night shift. When the time came, he could find a short term room to live in, and when Guan Anlin returned, he could consider finding a monthly room or staying at the tobacco shop in the trade market. Until then, he would not tell Ning Junyan of his plans.

On the fourth and fifth days of the new year, Chen Yuncheng did not go out except for a trip to the supermarket with Ning Junyan. They went to the supermarket on the fifth day of the new year, and Ning Junyan bought a lot of food.

Chen Yuncheng asked him, “Why did you buy so many things? The New Year is almost over.”

Ning Junyan said, “I’ll save it for later.”

On the morning of the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, Ning Junyan got up and went to the hospital for his shift.

Chen Yuncheng woke up after a lazy night’s sleep and began to pack his things slowly. He had hardly acquired anything during the time he had lived here. Before, he could pack only two suitcases, and now it was still the case, except for the set of clothes that Ning Junyan had bought for him, which he didn’t know what to do with.

The clothes were all bought according to his size, and he couldn’t wear it without taking it away from Ning Junyan. He stood by the bed and folded the clothes, and found that the down jacket had to be pressed hard to fit inside the suitcase.

Chen Yuncheng was a little bit reluctant.

After hesitating for a long time, he hung the down jacket back up in the wardrobe, not knowing if he would return one day, or if he would have to return this once-worn garment to Ning Junyan.

The sheets and quilt covers on his bed were all removed, washed and dried, and all were put into the cabinet. The rest were some small daily necessities, which could be temporarily put in the pockets when he left.

At night, Chen Yuncheng was lying on Ning Junyan’s bed alone, using his mobile phone to do video call with Ning Junyan.

Ning Junyan was sitting in his office, still wearing a white coat.

“Aren’t you busy with work?” Chen Yuncheng asked him.

Ning Junyan said, “I’ve already do the rounds, I’m not busy.”

Chen Yuncheng leaned against the bed, looking at Ning Junyan on the phone screen in a daze.

Ning Junyan asked him, “You didn’t go out all day?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Well, I didn’t go out because I had nothing to do.”

Ning Junyan nodded, and asked him again, “Miss me?”

When Chen Yuncheng heard him ask these words in a serious manner, he couldn’t help laughing, and said, “Quite a lot.” He didn’t lie, when he was packing his things today, all he could think about was Ning Junyan.

Ning Junyan said, “Then take off your clothes and touch yourself for me to see.”

Chen Yuncheng lowered his head and said helplessly, “Don’t even think about it.”

Ning Junyan said with some regret, “Alright then.”

The two of them didn’t speak for a while.

Chen Yuncheng looked at Ning Junyan, and asked him after a while, “Ning Junyan, why do you like me so much?”

Ning Junyan said, “Because you are very kind.”

Chen Yuncheng couldn’t figure it out, “I’m too ordinary, and I’m not capable of anything.”

Ning Junyan said gently and slowly, “Not for me. You are the most special to me.”

Chen Yuncheng looked at him and smiled.

Ning Junyan said softly, “Go to sleep, be good and wait for me at home.”

Chen Yuncheng nodded, “No more talking then. You should also go to bed earlier.”

       Ning Junyan said, “Okay.”

After they ended the video call, Ning Junyan put the phone on the desk and leaned his head back against the back of the office chair, with his usual indifference. Even if Chen Yuncheng didn’t say anything, he still knew that Chen Yuncheng didn’t go out all day, because he locked the door when he went out in the morning, and it couldn’t be opened from the inside. Chen Yuncheng could only leave his home when he came back from get off work tomorrow morning.

Of course he wasn’t going to let Chen Yuncheng leave at that time either.

Chapter 60

Because of Ning Junyan’s words, everyone at the round table in the dining area fell silent.

Yu Jie still maintained a smile on his face, he asked Ning Junyan, “Is there someone you like? Why are you not in a relationship with the person you like?”

When he heard the words, Ning Junyan turned his head and glanced at Chen Yuncheng, and then said, “The timing is not good.” He was referring to the fact that Chen Yuncheng would not allow him to disclose their relationship on such an occasion today, and since he had promised not to say anything, he really would not.

       No one else understood.

Shu Rong couldn’t bear it anymore and come out to smooth things over. She said to Ning Junyan, “You worked the night shift yesterday, did you get a good rest?”

Ning Junyan said, “Fortunately, I wasn’t too busy last night.”

Yu Jie stretched out his hand and patted the back of his daughter’s hand reassuringly, then said to Ning Junyan, “Young man, if you like it, feel free to pursue it boldly, don’t care about whether the timing is good or not.” After Yu Jie said that, he looked at Shu Rong, ” Am I right?”

       Shu Rong smiled and nodded.

Today was also supposed to be a day for Ning Junyan and Yu Mingli to meet, except for Shu Rong’s obvious desire to set them up, everyone else felt that love was free and it was up to fate if they could be together.

Now that Ning Junyan’s refusal attitude was obvious, Zhang Chong and the others hastened to change the subject to something else so as not to make the atmosphere even more awkward.

Chen Yuncheng secretly breathed a sigh of relief and was glad that Ning Junyan did not say anything more.

When they finished eating, Ning Zhang Hong and Shu Rong went to see off their guests, and Ning Junyan and Chen Yuncheng accompanied them to the parking area outside the lawn.

Chen Yuncheng saw Yu Jie and his daughter getting into the car, pressed the window and waved goodbye to the people outside, and then drove away in a natural manner.

When Zhang Chong and his wife also left, Ning Junyan said to Shu Rong, “Can I go?”

Shu Rong said, “Wait a moment, I have something to tell you.”

When they returned to the villa, Ning Zhanghong went upstairs alone without even saying anything. Chen Yuncheng stood downstairs and tilted his head to watch Ning Zhanghong’s back as he left, thinking to himself that Ning Zhanghong’s indifference was not entirely similar to Ning Junyan’s.

Shu Rong went to the kitchen and told the nanny to tidy up the living room. When she came back, she said to Chen Yuncheng, “Can we have a chat?” Her attitude was very gentle.

Chen Yuncheng originally thought that Shu Rong wanted to talk to Ning Junyan, and was a little surprised to hear her words.

At this time, Ning Junyan said coldly, “No.”

Shu Rong looked at Ning Junyan with a slightly angry look on her face but then forced herself to hold it back and still looked at Chen Yun Cheng gently.

Chen Yuncheng thought about Yu Jie’s matter, and felt that it was necessary for him to tell Shu Rong about Yu Jie’s situation, so he nodded and said, “Okay.”

Shu Rong took Chen Yuncheng to the small parlour on the second floor. She personally made a cup of tea for Chen Yuncheng and sat down opposite Chen Yuncheng.

       Chen Yuncheng said, “Auntie—”

“Yuncheng,” Shu Rong interrupted him, “Where do you work now?”

Chen Yuncheng couldn’t say anything about Yu Jie, so he could only answer Shu Rong’s question first, “I don’t have a job for the time being, but I will go to a friend’s store to help out after the Chinese New Year.”

Shu Rong nodded, “I remember you’re two years younger than Jun Yan, aren’t you?”

       Chen Yuncheng said, “Yes.”

Shu Rong picked up the teacup, took a shallow sip and said as she put it down, “So you’re about to be thirty, still don’t have a proper job, and are working for someone else?”

Chen Yuncheng looked at Shu Rong. Since he came back with Ning Junyan today, Shu Rong’s attitude has actually been unfriendly, but Chen Yuncheng was too distracted by Yu Jie, and only now when he heard Shu Rong’s words, he realised that Shu Rong probably was looking down on him.

With a faint feeling of discomfort in his heart, Chen Yuncheng replied in a very polite tone, “I opened a store by myself before, but it didn’t go well, so now I have to start all over again.”

Shu Rong smiled and said, “It doesn’t matter if young people fail in their careers, you just have to start all over again. Then how long do you plan to stay with Junyan?”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t answer immediately, some words twitched between his lips and teeth before he finally swallowed them down. He reminded himself that this was Ning Junyan’s mother, and he shouldn’t be rude, just as he had never been able to reject Ning Junyan with unpleasant words.

Seeing that he didn’t answer, Shu Rong continued by herself, “Junyan is more sentimental than I imagined. After all, you lived together when you were young. It’s understandable that he would be willing to give you a hand when he sees you in a bad situation. But Auntie thinks you still can’t rely on him too much, after all, you are an adult man, and you can’t rely on friends for a lifetime. It’s only real to plan for yourself early.

Chen Yuncheng put his hands on his knees, watching the tea leaves in the teacup in front of him floating on the light yellow water.

Shu Rong continued, “You all have to get married separately. You can’t have a girlfriend before you come to plan to find a place to live. It’s much less possible for you to take your girlfriend to live with him, right?”

Chen Yuncheng said slowly, “You are right.”

Shu Rong smiled, and only a few wrinkles could be seen at the corners of her eyes as she said, “There are some occasions in the future when it would be inappropriate for you to go with him. After all, you have been separated for so long and have your own different friends and different circles, there is no need to forcefully blend together, a moderate communication will do.”

As she spoke, Ning Jun Yan opened the door to the small parlour from outside and stood in the doorway saying, “Are you done talking?”

Shu Rong stood up and said to him, “We’ve almost finished chatting, I still have something I want to say to you.”

Ning Junyan walked in and stood in front of Shu Rong. From this angle, he just completely blocked Chen Yuncheng who was sitting opposite Shu Rong, “Go ahead.”

Shu Rong no longer had the gentle smile she had when facing Chen Yuncheng, she frowned slightly and said, “What’s your attitude towards the guests today?”

Ning Junyan said, “Which guest are you referring to? If it’s that lady, since I don’t have that intention, wouldn’t it be best to make my attitude clear before it’s too late?”

Shu Rong said, “You are already thirty years old! Don’t you know what to do at what age?”

Ning Junyan said, “I don’t need you to make arrangements for me.”

Shu Rong took a step forward, “That’s fine. Since you have someone you like, you can bring her back so I can take a look.”

When Ning Junyan heard the words, he turned his head and glanced at Chen Yuncheng.

At this moment, Chen Yuncheng’s mood calmed down, and he didn’t react when he saw Ning Junyan looking at him.

Ning Junyan turned his head and said, “There will be a day like that.” After he finished speaking, he turned and walked towards Chen Yuncheng, “Let’s go.”

Chen Yuncheng stood up from the sofa, and said to Shu Rong, “Auntie, we’ll leave first then.”

Shu Rong smiled, “Take care, I won’t see you off.”

Ning Junyan and Chen Yuncheng went downstairs, and the nanny sent them outside the door. The sun was still shining in the morning, but in the afternoon the sun was covered by clouds again, the tables and chairs on the lawn had been arranged to one side, and a cold breeze was blowing on them in the open environment.

       Chen Yuncheng remained silent.

After they got into the car, Ning Junyan raised his hand to fasten the seat belt. He did not rush to start the car, but looked at Chen Yuncheng and asked, “What did my mother say to you?”

Chen Yuncheng just hummed and turned his head, “Nothing. We just chatted.”

“Couldn’t tell me?” Ning Junyan asked.

Chen Yuncheng said, “No, it’s just that you must have heard what she said from her as well, it doesn’t mean much.”

Ning Junyan looked at him without speaking.

Chen Yuncheng reached out and pressed his hand on the back of Ning Junyan’s hand, “Let’s go back.”

Only then did Ning Junyan start the car and go home.

That night, Chen Yuncheng sat on the sofa as he stared at the television in a daze, and Ning Junyan was beside him, reading literature with his laptop on his lap.

The sound of the TV was turned on very low, the fluorescent screen kept flickering, and the images reflected in Chen Yuncheng’s eyes were constantly changing, but his mind was not on what was playing on the television at all.

Shu Rong’s words today are meaningless, her attitude and purpose could not be more simple; she just didn’t like Chen Yuncheng, and she wanted Chen Yuncheng to stay away from Ning Jun.

Chen Yuncheng had grown up as an orphan, and he grew up alone. He had never met anyone and had never suffered any grievances. He could easily understand the meaning of Shu Rong’s words, but he would not belittle himself because Shu Rong looked down on him, but he still cared.

Something Shu Rong had said had struck a chord in his heart. What was his relationship with Ning Junyan now? Even if they were in a relationship, Ning Junyan was the one who provided him with a peaceful environment and let him sleep in his warm embrace every night. He had too few days of being loved and favoured by others, and if he was not careful, he would Indulge in it.

He knew that Ning Junyan had deep feelings for him, and he was not willing to hurt Ning Junyan, otherwise he would have already considered moving out. Shu Rong’s words now were just another reminder for him to think carefully about whether it was okay for him to enjoy everything Ning Junyan had paid for him with his feelings, just like the clothes he was wearing now, or even the underwear inside were bought for him by Ning Junyan.

He wanted a more reciprocal and grounded relationship.

Chen Yuncheng’s mobile phone was sitting on the coffee table in front of him, and the screen lit up without warning, and the caller ID showed a call from Guan Anlin.

He sent a message to Guan Anlin in the afternoon, asking when Guan Anlin would come back, but the other party never replied, so he did not expect to make a phone call right now.

Ning Junyan raised his head and glanced at his mobile phone screen, his slender legs resting on the coffee table shifted a little, and then looked at Chen Yuncheng.

Chen Yuncheng picked up the phone and went to the balcony next to the bathroom to answer the phone under Ning Junyan’s gaze.

As soon as the phone was connected, Guan Anlin asked, “What’s the matter? Are you going to get ready for work now?”

Chen Yuncheng leaned against the balcony guardrail, and looked in the direction of the living room, “No, I want to ask if the house you rented before. Is it convenient for me to move in now?”

Guan Anlin was taken aback by his question, and said, “I have returned the house.”

“Returned?” Chen Yuncheng was a little surprised.

Guan Anlin said, “Didn’t you ask me to do business with you? Anyway, I have very few things anyway, so I give up my house and quit my job before I go home for the New Year, waiting for you to inform me when to start work.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “It may take a while.”

“It doesn’t matter, then I’ll stay at home for a while longer,” Guan Anlin said, who hadn’t been back to his hometown for a long time.

       Chen Yuncheng replied, “En”.

Guan Anlin asked him, “Did you get kicked out by that rich friend of yours?”

Chen Yuncheng’s tone was a little frustrated, “No.”

Guan Anlin said, “So what house to look for now?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “It’s nothing, I’m just asking.”

Guan Anlin said to him, “Then wait a little longer, let your rich friend accommodate you and stay for a few more days, and we will find a house to live in when I come back.”

       “I understand.”

With that said, Chen Yuncheng ended the call.

He was a little distressed and squatted down on the balcony, tucking his fingers into his short hair. He felt that he was being a bit pretentious, obviously, he would be more straightforward with other people and things. However, he would think a lot about Ning Junyan’s matter, and sometimes he would even get involved in it.

He lowered his head, bumped his head against the wall, and suddenly heard Ning Junyan’s voice, “What are you doing?”

Chen Yuncheng jerked his head up and saw Ning Junyan standing in the doorway of the balcony looking at him.

The author has something to say:
I know Ning Junyan’s mother is very annoying, please repeat after me: Let’s just read the article, I’m not angry

Chapter 59

Before Chen Yuncheng went out, he took out the new clothes that Ning Junyan had given him and put them on. After changing his clothes, he stood in front of the mirror for a long time and looked at them carefully. When he felt that nothing looked out of place on his body, he went out with Ning Junyan.

Originally, Chen Yuncheng wanted to go to a nearby shopping mall to buy a New Year’s gift for Ning Junyan’s parents, but Ning Junyan said it was not necessary, and that he had gifts for others in his car, so Chen Yuncheng could just carry them over when the time comes.

“Isn’t it inappropriate?” Chen Yuncheng said.

“It’s nothing inappropriate,” Ning Junyan didn’t even discuss it with him, nor did he plan to drive to the mall.

Chen Yuncheng had no choice but to accept it.

They were not out early enough, and it was almost eleven noon when they drove to Ning Junyan’s parents’ house.

Ning Junyan’s parents lived on the outskirts of the city, which was also a villa area. As it was still relatively new, it had a wide view of the surrounding area and a good environment.

Chen Yuncheng was a little apprehensive all the way to the villa. After he got off the car, he saw a lawn in front of the villa. Perhaps it was because of the good weather today and the abundant sunlight, a small square table was placed on the lawn, and a few people sat beside the small square table, drinking tea and chatting.

One of them was Ning Junyan’s mother, Shu Rong, and it seemed that their guests had already arrived.

Chen Yuncheng was holding the New Year’s gift box given to him by Ning Junyan, he didn’t know how much the box was worth, but it was beautifully packaged.

Ning Junyan walked beside him and walked with him along the stone path on the lawn.

One of the guests saw Ning Junyan and the others first and said to Shu Rong, “Your son is back.”

Shu Rong turned her head with a smile on her face, and the moment her eyes touched Chen Yuncheng, her smile very visibly stiffened for a moment, then she stood up and walked towards Ning Junyan and the others with a natural expression.

       “You’ve returned?” Shu Rong asked.

       Ning Junyan nodded.

Chen Yuncheng smiled and said to Shu Rong, “Auntie, Happy New Year.” He handed the gift box in his hand to Shu Rong.

Shu Rong looked down at the gift box but didn’t immediately reach out.

Ning Junyan first took the gift box from Chen Yuncheng’s hand, and handed it to Shu Rong, “Yuncheng is here to give you New Year’s greetings.”

Only then did Shu Rong raise her hand and said with a smile, “You’re too kind.”

She didn’t say much and led Ning Junyan and the others to greet several guests.

“Uncle Zhang and Aunt Xia, you both know each other,” Shu Rong introduced to Ning Junyan.

Ning Junyan, Zhang Chong and Xia Wenjuan knew each other. They had been doing business with Shu Rong, and Shu Rong’s plastic surgery hospital was jointly opened with them.

Then Shu Rong continued to introduce, “This is Boss Yu. This should be the first time you meet him, and that’s Boss Yu’s daughter, called Yu Mingli, she just came back from studying abroad.”

       Ning Junyan just nodded.

Shu Rong took Ning Junyan’s arm and said, “This is my son Junyan, who works in the hospital.” After she finished speaking, she saw other people’s eyes falling on Chen Yuncheng, and said, “This is my son Junyan’s friend.”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t say anything. Ever since he saw the guests from Ning’s family, his eyes had been on Boss Yu.

Boss Yu sat on a white chair, looked up and saw Chen Yuncheng. He then smiled at him politely.

Chen Yuncheng could not smile, he had met this Boss Yu, and although not for many times, he left a deep impression. This person was the same Boss Yu who said he would take Guan Anlin to do business together, but later caused Guan Anlin to do two years in jail. Chen Yuncheng remembered his name was Yu Jie.

Zhang Chong got up and greeted Ning Junyan as they sat down.

Ning Junyan noticed that something was not quite right with Chen Yuncheng. He lightly touched the back of Chen Yuncheng’s hand, and asked in a low voice, “What’s wrong?”

Chen Yuncheng shook his head, turned his eyes away from Yu Jie, and said, “It’s nothing.”

After he sat down, Ning Junyan asked Shu Rong, “Where’s dad?”

Shu Rong said, “He’s still dawdling upstairs, the guests are all here and he hasn’t come down yet, why don’t you go and call him?”

Ning Junyan refused, “He will come later by himself.”

Xia Wenjuan looked at Chen Yuncheng, and asked Ning Junyan, “Junyan, what’s your friend’s name, you haven’t introduced him to us yet.”

Ning Jun replied, “His name is Chen Yuncheng.”

Chen Yuncheng greeted Xia Wenjuan politely.

Seeing that Xia Wenjuan was still looking at Chen Yuncheng, Shu Rong asked Yu Mingli who was sitting opposite her abruptly, “It’s no fun for you youngsters to listen to us chat, is it? Would xiao Li like to go for a stroll?”

Yu Mingli glanced at Ning Junyan, then at Shu Rong, and said, “Okay.”

Shu Rong said to Ning Junyan, “You can go take a walk with Xiaoli.”

Ning Junyan didn’t agree, he just asked Chen Yuncheng, “Want to go for a walk?”

Chen Yuncheng shook his head, and he couldn’t help looking at Yu Jie again. However, Yu Jie didn’t look at him and only looked at Ning Junyan with a smile on his face.

Ning Junyan said to Shu Rong, “I’m not going, I’ll take Yuncheng to see Dad.” After he said that, he stood up, held Chen Yuncheng’s hand at the same time, pulled him up, and led him towards the villa’s front door.

The rest of the group seemed a little embarrassed, and after a brief moment of silence, Shu Rong smiled and said to Yu Mingli, “Then let’s have dinner before we go take a stroll, Junyan will take his friend to see the old Ning first.”

Yu Mingli nodded her head and forced a smile.

When they entered the house, the busy voice of the nanny came from the direction of the kitchen. There were several New Year gifts, fruit plates and flower arrangements on the coffee table in the living room.

Ning Junyan did not take Chen Yuncheng upstairs immediately, but stopped at the stairs and asked him, “What’s wrong?”

Chen Yuncheng seemed to have been lost in thought, but when he heard Ning Junyan’s question, he looked up at him, “What? We’re not going to give New Year’s greetings to your father?”

Ning Junyan frowned, “Do you know that Boss Yu?”

Chen Yuncheng didn’t know if he should say it at this time, he hesitated for a moment and said, “I don’t know him, let’s go upstairs first.”

Ning Junyan raised his hand to pinch Chen Yuncheng’s jaw, and looked at him seriously, “What do you keep looking at him for if you don’t know him?”

Chen Yuncheng pushed Ning Junyan’s hand away, “What are you thinking?”

Ning Junyan said, “Or else we will go back.”

Chen Yuncheng was stunned for a moment, “Why? You came here especially to spend the New Year with your parents today.”

Ning Junyan said, “You don’t look happy.”

Chen Yuncheng looked at him and smiled, “I’m not unhappy.”

Ning Junyan said coldly, “You keep looking at other people.”

“Looking at who?” Chen Yuncheng was baffled by what he said, and after a while, he realised, “You mean Boss Yu?”

Ning Junyan had a stoic expression on his face and did not speak.

Chen Yuncheng smiled and raised his hand to pinch his face, “Do you think I’m crazy?”

Ning Junyan stared at him for a moment, then took his hand again and continued walking upstairs.

They met Ning Zhanghong in the study room on the second floor. Ning Zhanghong was reading a book and obviously didn’t want to go down to chat with Shu Rong’s guests.

When Ning Zhanghong saw Chen Yuncheng, his usually calm face also showed some surprise, “Are you Chen Yuncheng?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Uncle, happy new year.”

Ning Zhanghong nodded, “Happy New Year.” He stood up from the desk, stretched out his hand to flatten the book in front of him, went to the window and looked downstairs. When he turned around, he asked Ning Junyan, ” Have you met your mother?”

Ning Junyan said, “I’ve met her.”

Ning Zhanghong’s tone was slightly nervous, “She didn’t say anything?”

Ning Junyan said, “There are still guests at home, and she is busy keeping Uncle Zhang and the others company.”

Ning Zhanghong nodded to show that he understood. With his hands behind his back, he stared at the people downstairs for a while, and said to Ning Junyan, “Then you can accompany your friend to have fun.”

Ning Junyan opened the door and wanted to take Chen Yuncheng out when Ning Zhanghong suddenly called out to him again, “You know your mother has a bad temper.”

“I know,” Ning Junyan said, and left the study with Chen Yuncheng one after the other.

Ning Zhanghong didn’t care who Ning Junyan associates with, he only cared that Shu Rong would lose her temper because of this, and make him no longer have a day of peace.

When he came out of the study, Chen Yuncheng said, “Uncle seems strange.”

Ning Junyan asked him, “In what way?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “I can’t tell, but he seems a bit nervous.”

Ning Junyan hummed and said, “He’s always like this, don’t worry about him.”

It was only at lunchtime that Ning Zhanghong came down from upstairs and sat down at the round table to accompany the guests.

Shu Rong opened a bottle of red wine, but Ning Zhanghong didn’t drink, so she drank with the guests by herself.

Chen Yuncheng felt that Yu Jie acted as if he didn’t know him anymore. He didn’t pay attention to him from the beginning to the end, and he didn’t deliberately avoid his gaze, as if he was facing a complete stranger.

As he listened to their conversation while eating, he learnt that Yu Jie met Shu Rong through Zhang Chong. He had a sum of money in hand and wanted to work with them to set up a branch of a plastic surgery hospital in the east of the city.

Shu Rong didn’t seem to know Yu Jie very well, but she was clearly more interested in his daughter and had been taking the initiative to chat with Yu Mingli.

When he first arrived at Ning’s house, Chen Yuncheng’s attention was all on Yu Jie, and now he suddenly realised that the main purpose of Shu Rong’s banquet today was to introduce Ning Junyan and Yu Mingli to each other.

When he realised this, Chen Yuncheng couldn’t help but look at Ning Junyan.

He didn’t know if Ning Junyan noticed it, but then he couldn’t tell anything from Ning Junyan’s face anyway. After he noticed Chen Yuncheng’s gaze, he gave Chen Yuncheng a chopstick of fish and said, “Concentrate on eating.”

Shu Rong tried her best to find something in common between Ning Junyan and Yu Mingli, asking them about their experiences studying abroad.

Yu Mingli said that she worked very hard and that there was a time when she had to prepare a report every week and couldn’t even sleep well at night.

Shu Rong looked at Ning Junyan.

Ning Junyan said with an expressionless face, “It’s nothing, I think everything is very simple and easy.”

Yu Jie laughed and said, “That’s because Junyan is smart, and xiao Li is not so smart, so she has to work harder.”

Shu Rong’s face darkened slightly, and she looked at Ning Junyan with disapproval.

Chen Yuncheng looked at Yu Mingli and saw that although Yu Mingli was smiling, she looked a little embarrassed.

Yu Jie seemed to be trying to help his daughter out as he asked Ning Jun Yan, “From what your mother said, you haven’t been in a relationship for so many years?”

Ning Junyan replied politely, “That’s right.”

Yu Jie asked him, “Is it because you haven’t met the right one or are you asking too much?” He asked with a smile, and his tone sounded very kind.

Ning Junyan put down his chopsticks and looked at Yu Jie.

Chen Yuncheng’s heart suddenly jumped heavily. He had a premonition that Ning Junyan might talk nonsense, he was very nervous and stretched out his hand to pull Ning Junyan’s arm from under the table.

Ning Junyan’s attention shifted to Chen Yuncheng. He saw that the fish that he has just given to him hadn’t been touched, so he asked, “The food is not delicious?”

Chen Yuncheng replied in a low voice, “No, it’s delicious.”

Ning Junyanlifted his hand and pressed it against the back of Chen Yuncheng’s neck, “Then eat well.” Then he turned to Yu Jie and asked, “When is Boss Yu referring to? Before or now?”

Yu Jie smiled and asked, “Is there any difference?”

Ning Junyan said, “Before I never come across anyone yet, but now I have someone I like.”

Chapter 58

The two of them didn’t go out for the whole day on the first day of the new year. When Chen Yuncheng was watching TV in the living room, Ning Junyan would also bring his laptop to the living room and stay with Chen Yuncheng no matter what he did.

By the second day of the Lunar New Year, Ning Junyan had to get up and go to work.

When his alarm clock went off in the morning, Chen Yuncheng woke up immediately and felt Ning Junyan release his tight hold on his arms. As the alarm clock stopped ringing and the bed shifted around him, Ning Junyan got out of bed and went to the bathroom.

Chen Yuncheng woke up and didn’t want to get up. He continued to lie on the bed with his eyes closed. He heard Ning Junyan coming out of the bathroom and felt Ning Junyan kiss him on the cheek, after which he opened his eyes and watched Ning Junyan’s back leave the room.

He rolled over and slept in the place where Ning Junyan had slept earlier, a little warmth still remained on it.

Ning Junyan had to be on duty all day today and would not return until tomorrow morning.

Chen Yuncheng had no other plans and still didn’t want to go out. He slept in until after nine o’clock in the morning and sat in the dining room in his pyjamas to eat breakfast.

Halfway through breakfast, Chen Yuncheng heard the sound of the key opening the door. He was a little surprised and thought that it was Ning Junyan who had returned and couldn’t help but glance at the time on the phone, wondering why Ning Junyan would return at this time.

The sound of footsteps coming from the door came all the way to the front of the dining room. Chen Yuncheng raised his head and saw a woman with an exquisite dress as exquisite as her appearance standing in front, looking at him with a slightly surprised expression.

That woman was none other than Ning Junyan’s mother, Shu Rong.

Chen Yuncheng met her sixteen years ago. So much time had passed that he could not remember what she looked like. But when Chen Yuncheng saw her again at this time, he could easily see the similar outline between Ning Junyan’s eyebrows and eyes and hers, so he stood up nervously and asked, “Are you Ning Junyan’s mother?”

Shu Rong looked Chen Yuncheng up and down in disbelief, but her tone was still polite as she asked him, “You are?”

Chen Yuncheng quickly said, “I am Ning Junyan’s friend, my name is Chen Yuncheng.”

When Shu Rong heard the word Chen Yuncheng, her expression changed instantly.

But Chen Yuncheng didn’t notice it, he was a little flustered, and subconsciously buttoned the top button of his pyjamas, not sure if there were any hickeys left by Ning Junyan on his neck, then he greeted Shu Rong again, “Has auntie had breakfast yet? Are you here to see Ning Junyan? He’s gone on duty today.”

Shu Rong was still looking at Chen Yuncheng, and asked in an uncertain tone, “Are you that boy?”

Chen Yuncheng looked at her, a little surprised, “Do you remember me?”

Shu Rong took a small step forward, “You are that boy, right? I have seen you before, the child who lived with Junyan.” She avoided the topic of being trafficked.

Chen Yuncheng showed a gentle smile, “It’s me.”

Shu Rong looked at him and after a moment smiled back, looking gentle, “So it really is you, how did you end up here? How did you and Junyan meet?” She asked as she held her handbag tightly.

Chen Yuncheng said, “We met by chance, but I didn’t expect Junyan to recognize me after so many years.”

The smile on Shu Rong’s face was maintained as she waited for him to continue.

“The small kiosk I owned closed down some time ago after something happened, so I’m temporarily staying here for a while.”

       Shu Rong nodded, “I see.”

Chen Yuncheng called out to Shu Rong again, “Auntie, please have a seat first.”

Shu Rong didn’t sit down. She stood in the room, looked around, and asked, “Is Junyan on duty today?”

“Yes,” Chen Yuncheng thought that Shu Rong didn’t know, and said, “He is on the second and sixth days of the New Year.”

Shu Rong nodded, “Ah, I already said I am going to come to see him.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Why don’t you give him a call and ask him to go back to visit you tomorrow.”

Shu Rong smiled and said, “It’s okay, it’s not good to disturb him on duty to talk.” After saying that, her eyes fell to the dining table and said to Chen Yuncheng, “You haven’t finished your breakfast yet, then I won’t bother you, I’ll leave now.”

Chen Yuncheng secretly breathed a sigh of relief, but still said, “Auntie, please have a seat for a while.”

Shu Rong shook her head, turned around and walked towards the door with her small handbag.

Chen Yuncheng kept walking her out the door, saying politely, “Take care, Auntie.” Then he waited until Shu Rong entered the lift before closing the door and leaning against it to breathe a sigh of relief.

After breakfast, Chen Yuncheng sat on the sofa and sent a message to Ning Junyan: “Your mother came over just now.”

After he sent the message, he put his phone aside, and thought that Ning Junyan must be busy and might not have time to reply to him.

It resulted in Ning Junyan quickly calling and asking, “What did she say?”

Chen Yuncheng heard Ning Junyan’s tone was a bit cold and said strangely, “Nothing. She didn’t know you were on duty today, so she might have come to see you.”

Ning Junyan didn’t tell Chen Yuncheng that Shu Rong knew that he was on duty today, so she probably came here deliberately while he was not at home, he just asked, “Did she say anything to you?”

Chen Yuncheng leaned on the sofa, “Didn’t say anything, she saw that you weren’t there and quickly left. I told her that I was just staying with you temporarily.”

Ning Junyan was quiet for a while and didn’t speak.

Chen Yuncheng asked, “Aren’t you busy today?”

Ning Junyan said, “I just finished my rounds, so I’m not busy.”

The few days after the Chinese New Year should be the easiest time to work in the hospital. As long as most patients could be discharged from the hospital, they would choose to leave the hospital and go home to celebrate the New Year. If they were not seriously ill, they would not be sent to the hospital now.

Chen Yuncheng added, “If you’re free tomorrow, would you like to go back to see your parents?”

Ning Junyan said, “I would have gone back tomorrow.”

“Really?” Chen Yuncheng said softly, “I didn’t hear you say that.”

Ning Junyan said, “I was going to tell you when I come back tomorrow morning.” After he said that, he suddenly said, “I miss you so much.”

Chen Yuncheng was taken aback by what he said, and couldn’t help but put both feet on the sofa, and said in an uncomfortable tone, “Didn’t you just go out in the morning….”

Ning Junyan’s voice was low and deep. He sounded very serious as he said, “Come and accompany me at night.”

Chen Yuncheng thought for a while, “I can go and have supper with you, but is it okay?”

Ning Junyan said, “Come and sleep with me.”

Chen Yuncheng’s eyes widened, “In the hospital, you say?”

Ning Junyan said solemnly, “There’s a duty room, and it’s just the two of us with the door locked.”

“No!” Chen Yuncheng raised his hand to cover his eyes, “I’m not going to sleep with you, you should go to work seriously!” After he said that, he decided not to listen to Ning Junyan’s nonsense and hung up the phone directly.

When it was time to go to bed at night, Chen Yuncheng went back to his guest room. Firstly, because Ning Junyan was not at home today, and secondly, because he just saw Ning Junyan’s mother in the morning, and he was a bit embarrassed to sleep alone in Ning Junyan’s bed.

As he lay on the bed alone, Chen Yuncheng couldn’t help but feel a little upset, as he thought about if the relationship between him and Ning Junyan was to be maintained forever, he would have to go through Ning Junyan’s parents, and he felt a little sorry for Ning Junyan’s parents. But it was always impossible to have a good solution to this kind of thing, and it was inevitable to suffer serious blows. It just depended on who was more persistent and who could be convinced first.

He turned over a little annoyed and pulled up the quilt to cover half of his face. He suddenly felt that what Ning Junyan said was right, this room was really big, so big that it was a little empty, and it also seemed a bit cold tonight.

The next morning, Chen Yuncheng still slept in. But today he wasn’t woken up by Ning Junyan’s alarm clock, nor was he woken up by the need to urinate, rather he was still dreaming when he was suddenly picked up from the bed whole by someone and jolted awake with fright.

As soon as Chen Yuncheng opened his eyes, he saw Ning Junyan. Ning Junyan princess carried him and walked towards his room calmly.

“What are you doing?” Chen Yuncheng grabbed Ning Junyan’s arm in shock.

Ning Junyan suddenly looked unhappy, “Who told you to sleep here?”

Chen Yuncheng quickly understood what Ning Junyan meant, but he still couldn’t completely calm down from his panic when he spoke, “You were not here last night.”

Ning Junyan said forcefully, “Then you can only sleep on my bed.”

He carried Chen Yuncheng back to his room, placed him near the middle of the big bed, where Chen Yuncheng usually slept, pulled the quilt to cover him, then sat down on the side of the bed in satisfaction, and stroked Chen Yuncheng’s hair.

Chen Yuncheng’s fierce heartbeat gradually calmed down.

Ning Junyan had obviously just returned from outside, but his palm was even warmer than Chen Yuncheng’s skin. He stroked Chen Yuncheng’s cheek, then reached under the quilt to hold Chen Yuncheng’s hand.

“Aren’t you going back today?” Chen Yuncheng asked him.

“Mm,” Ning Junyan replied, looking at him and not speaking anymore.

Chen Yuncheng was no longer sleepy, he lay on the bed and looked at Ning Junyan. He saw Ning Junyan’s expression was very focused, and his eyes never moved away from his face.

“What are you thinking?” Chen Yuncheng couldn’t help asking.

Ning Junyan said, “I want to take you home.”

Chen Yuncheng subconsciously refused, “No, it’s not good.”

Ning Junyan intertwined his fingers with Chen Yuncheng’s, “You said my mother knew that you lived with me.”

When Chen Yuncheng heard him say that, Chen Yuncheng was lost in thought. Today Ning Junyan was going back to visit his parents. Since Ning Junyan’s mother knows that he lived here, it seemed impolite for him not to go to pay his respects, but it might seem presumptuous to suddenly go there.

“Should I go?” Chen Yuncheng was slightly distressed.

Ning Junyan’s thought was completely different from his. He wanted to take Chen Yuncheng back, but he was afraid that his parents would say anything that would hurt Chen Yuncheng. He was hesitating because he couldn’t fully control the outcome of this matter.

Chen Yuncheng sat up, “I’ll go back with you and pay my respects to your parents?”

Ning Junyan looked at him for a while and said, “Let’s go.”

Chen Yuncheng grabbed Ning Junyan’s hand, “But I want to warn you first, today for the Chinese New Year, I’m just going back with you as your friend, don’t talk nonsense to your parents.”

Ning Junyan said something completely irrelevant, “They have guests today.”

       Chen Yuncheng asked strangely, “Huh?”

Ning Junyan twitched the corner of his mouth slightly, revealing a faint smile, then grabbed Chen Yuncheng’s hand and kissed it, “It’s nothing, I won’t say anything, don’t worry.”

Shu Rong was a person who cared a lot about maintaining her reputation very much, as long as there were guests at home, she would definitely be polite to Chen Yuncheng. Ning Junyan didn’t care whether he goes back for the New Year, he just wanted to stay with Chen Yuncheng.

Chapter 57

There were a lot of things Ning Junyan didn’t say and actually he couldn’t recall much about them. In fact, since he successfully passed the high school entrance examination, and his life and studies have been on the right track, Shu Rong had gradually shown more and more warm side, and at that time Shu Rong started to run a plastic surgery hospital with others, and put more of her mind on making money. Ning Junyan, on the other hand, was able to finish his studies well without her watching him at all times, and he felt that his life had returned to its normal course.

Even now when Ning Junyan and Chen Yuncheng were talking about the past, his tone was nonchalant, as if he had never cared about that. As long as he held Chen Yuncheng in his arms now, he could feel at ease.

On New Year’s Eve, Ning Junyan began to take a holiday from going to the hospital.

It was the first time in many years that Chen Yuncheng had spent the New Year with someone from morning to night.

He woke up in Ning Junyan’s arms in the morning. In the past two days, Ning Junyan had to sleep with him in his arms every night. At first, Chen Yuncheng was in some pain and could not sleep well all night, as long as he moved a little bit Ning Junyan would definitely tighten his arms and forbid him to leave, but now he had surprisingly started to get used to it.

It was only when he wanted to get up in the morning that Ning Junyan would keep holding on to him.

Chen Yuncheng said painfully, “I’m going to pee.”

Ning Junyan still had his eyes closed, lying sideways on the pillow with messy hair, and said, “Don’t pee.”

Chen Yuncheng felt that sometimes Ning Junyan looked like a lunatic without logic, he said, “Do I hold it back?”

Ning Junyan’s arm on his chest moved down and pressed against the small of his back, saying, “Wet the bed.”

Chen Yuncheng’s whole body almost jumped up, as he had almost pissed himself when Ning Junyan pressed him, and he was about to go crazy, so he lifted off Ning Junyan’s arm and stumbled out of bed towards the bathroom.

After a while, Ning Junyan followed in and hugged Chen Yuncheng from behind.

Chen Yuncheng said embarrassingly, “Don’t look at me.”

Ning Junyan’s warm kisses fell on his ears and cheeks, followed by his neck and shoulders, leaving traces on his body happily.

Chen Yuncheng said, “We have to go to the supermarket this morning to buy some food, otherwise we won’t have anything to eat for dinner.”

Ning Junyan finally kissed him on the head, and replied, “Okay.”

While the supermarket was still open in the morning, Ning Junyan and Chen Yuncheng drove to buy a lot of things.

There were a lot of people in the supermarket, and the radio kept playing lively New Year’s songs. Chen Yuncheng stopped and took a look at Ning Junyan who was pushing a cart behind him, and suddenly felt a sense of contentment and happiness.

Ning Junyan was looking at the things in the cart with his head down, but when he noticed Chen Yuncheng’s gaze raise his head, he asked expressionlessly, “Are you looking at me like that because you want me to kiss you?”

Chen Yuncheng smiled, “Don’t talk nonsense.”

“Oh,” Ning Junyan lowered his head again, “I thought you wanted me to kiss you.”

They had bought a lot of food and could have stayed out on the first day of the New Year. It was a pity that Ning Junyan was on duty on the second day of the new year, and he had already promised Shu Rong to go back on the third day of the new year. Otherwise, he could have stayed home to watch over Chen Yun Cheng without going anywhere during the New Year holidays.

There were only two people eating dinner, and even though it was a New Year’s Eve dinner, it was very simple. After the meal, Ning Junyan hugged Chen Yuncheng in his arms and leaned on the sofa to watch TV.

Chen Yuncheng knew that Ning Junyan was not interested in TV programs, so he turned his head occasionally and saw that Ning Junyan’s attention was not on the TV screen at all, but was looking at his side face all the time.

“How did you spend the Chinese New Year last year?” Chen Yuncheng felt a little uncomfortable under his gaze, so he took the initiative to find a topic.

Ning Junyan recalled it for a while, and said, “Last year I was on duty in the hospital, and a doctor on duty brought me a midnight snack and invited me to eat.”

“Is it delicious?” Chen Yuncheng asked him.

Ning Junyan said, “I didn’t eat it, I had a boxed lunch at night and didn’t feel hungry.”

Chen Yuncheng said, “It’s not like the person was trying to buy you a meal, but it’s just that it’s too lonely to see you alone during the Chinese New Year, so that person invited you to get together.”

Ning Junyan casually said, “Is that so?” After a while, he asked Chen Yuncheng again, “What about you?”

Chen Yuncheng replied to him, “I had dinner with Zhou Yan and the others during Chinese New Year last year, and then spent it alone.” At that time Zhou Yan was already with Gu Yaojia, and they came to find Chen Yuncheng. They all had dinner together, and after that Zhou Yan and Gu Yaojia Yao Jia went back to their rented house. Chen Yuncheng then hid in the small room inside the store by himself and watched the whole celebration with the TV next to the bed.

Now that he thought about it, it was already a long time ago, and too many things had happened this year. Chen Yuncheng’s life has been turned upside down, and there have been great changes.

Chen Yuncheng actually liked to watch TV. When the TV is on, it was always buzzing with activity, as if there were other people in the house.

He watched the celebration for a while and then turned around to find that Ning Junyan had fallen asleep with his head on his shoulder.

For some reason, Chen Yuncheng suddenly recalled the first Chinese New Year they spent together when Ning Junyan was picked up by his foster father when he was a child.

The foster mother cooked two extra dishes that day, but when she saw Chen Yuncheng or Ning Junyan stretching their chopsticks to pick up the meat, she would hit their chopsticks unhappily.

But Chen Yuncheng was still quite happy. After they ate and washed the dishes, he slipped out of the yard with Ning Junyan to watch the children living nearby set off fireworks. There were no big and colourful fireworks, it was all children’s playthings, which emit a short light or sound in the dark, and disappeared in a flash.

Chen Yuncheng even secretly hid money to buy a few. He crouched on the ground and lit the fuse with a lighter, and pulled Ning Junyan to run away before the fireworks burst into bloom.

It was quite late before the two of them went back to the courtyard after playing. Too lazy to take a bath because it was winter, they only brushed their teeth and washed their faces before going to bed.

Until he was lying on the bed, Chen Yuncheng was still a little excited. He took Ning Junyan’s hand beside him and said, “Did you hear the TV next door?”

In the next room, the foster father and foster mother were still watching TV.

       Ning Junyan nodded.

Chen Yuncheng said, “I also want to watch TV.”

Ning Junyan lay on his side, facing Chen Yuncheng’s direction, and said, “I’ll buy you a TV.”

Chen Yuncheng smiled immediately, and turned to look at him, “Where do you have the money to buy me a TV?”

Ning Junyan said, “I have them at home.”

Chen Yuncheng asked curiously, “Do you remember where your home is?”

Ning Junyan thought hard, then shook his head.

“Oh—” Chen Yuncheng sighed, “It’s okay, maybe you’ll remember it someday.” After he said that, he reached out to touch Ning Junyan’s head. Half a year has passed, and he could not feel anything unusual outside. He felt strange, “How come your head is still not good?”

After a while, Ning Junyan reached out to touch it himself, but couldn’t find anything.

Chen Yuncheng looked at him, and suddenly felt that he was quite pitiful, “It’s your first time not spending Chinese New Year’s with your family, right?”

Ning Junyan also looked at Chen Yuncheng, not knowing how to answer this question.

Chen Yuncheng reached out and hugged him, letting his head rest on his shoulder, It’s alright, from now on you’ll follow me. I’ll take care of you, and maybe when you remember about it, I can even send you home.”

Ning Junyan stretched out his hand silently to wrap around Chen Yuncheng’s waist.

The sound of firecrackers continued to come from outside, becoming more and more intense, until at a certain moment, it sounded like an explosion from all directions.

Ning Junyan raised his head vigilantly.

And Chen Yuncheng didn’t need to look at the time, he knew it was twelve o’clock, he patted Ning Junyan on the head to signal him not to be afraid, and said, “Happy New Year.”

Ning Junyan lay down again, “En”, “You too.”

As he recalled this, Chen Yuncheng sat up, picked up the remote control on the table and turned off the TV. He squatted beside the sofa, patted Ning Junyan’s face, and said, “Go to bed.”

Ning Junyan opened his eyes and asked, “Is it twelve o’clock?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “Not yet, but go to bed if you are sleepy.”

Ning Junyan nodded and stood up. He took two steps, then stopped suddenly, and said to Chen Yuncheng, “I said I will buy you a TV.”

Chen Yuncheng was a little surprised, “Do you still remember?” He thought that it was a nonsense Ning Junyan had said when his head was still sick.

Ning Junyan said, “At that time, whenever New Year’s Eve came, I was always thinking about buying you a TV set.”

Chen Yuncheng couldn’t help but look at him and smile.

Ning Junyan raised his hand, scratched his hair, turned around and continued walking towards the room, saying as he walked, “But you don’t need it now.”

He walked all the way to the door, and saw that Chen Yuncheng hadn’t followed, so he stretched out a hand, “Come here, let’s go to bed.”

Chen Yuncheng walked over and held his hand, coaxing him, “Okay, let’s go to bed.”

Chapter 56

Ning Junyan’s cousin was two years younger than him and his wife just gave birth to a son this year. During the meal, the little child was carried to the table, and the family was happy and amused, all teasing the child.

Shu Rong picked up the child, played with him in her arms for a while, and then suddenly put him in Ning Junyan’s arms.

Unprepared, Ning Junyan reached out for the child and looked up at Shu Rong.

Shu Rong stood beside him and asked him, “Isn’t he lovely?”

Ning Junyan looked down at the child in his arms, and replied indifferently, “He’s lovely.” Then he got up and returned the child to his mother.

At this time, Ning Junyan’s second uncle said, “If you think he’s lovely, give birth to one yourself sooner.”

Ning Junyan smiled when he heard the words, and didn’t intend to continue the topic, so he did not say anything.

It was a long family reunion dinner, and when they were full, the men in the family still sat around the round table smoking and chatting.

Only Ning Junyan stood up, walked out through the living room, put on his coat and walked outside into the cold and gloomy courtyard.

When he went out, Shu Rong stopped him from behind, “Are you leaving now?”

Ning Junyan said, “I’m going out to get some fresh air.”

After a while, Shu Rong also put on a thick coat and followed him out.

Shu Rong was in her fifties this year. She took good care of her health, she had fair and tight skin, and a figure she tried hard to maintain. She looked like she was still in her early forties.

She had opened a beauty and plastic surgery hospital with a friend about ten years ago, with her as the director. Now more than ten years had passed, the hospital’s business was getting more and more prosperous, and she was getting prettier and prettier, like a living billboard for the hospital.

Ning Junyan’s father, Ning Zhanghong, was the deputy director of another public tertiary hospital in the city. If Shu Rong’s personality was that of a typical businessman, Ning Zhanghong was a low-key and dedicated scholar. Part of Ning Junyan’s personality was inherited from his father; who was quiet and indifferent and didn’t talk much. The other part might come from his mother, who has a strong personality and was difficult to control.

He was not close to either of his parents even without the experience of being abducted by human traffickers twenty years ago.

The door light of the living room door could only illuminate a small area of the courtyard, the rest of the flowers and trees were hidden in the darkness.

Shu Rong wrapped her long coat tightly and asked Ning Junyan, “Are you on duty during the Chinese New Year?”

Ning Junyan said, “On duty1typically some people will take 1-2 weeks holiday near Chinese New Year.”

“How many days are you on duty?”

Ning Junyan answered her, “The second and sixth days of the Chinese New Year.”

Shu Rong nodded and said, “Then come back home on the 30th night and we’ll spend the New Year together, and come back on the 3rd day as well, we have guests at home that day.”

“No,” Ning Junyan said, “I have my own arrangements.”

Shu Rong frowned, “What are your plans for the Chinese New Year alone? What is more important than going home to celebrate the New Year with your parents?”

Ning Junyan said calmly, “Isn’t it quite a lot? Studying, making money, isn’t it all more important than a family reunion?” After he said that, he heard movement in the living room, turned around and saw that it was grandpa coming out of the dining room, so he walked inside.

He walked up to his grandfather, bent down and said a few words of New Year’s greetings to him, and then said, “I have things to do at home, so I’ll go back first.”

Unlike his father, his grandfather had an amiable personality. He grabbed Ning Junyan’s hand and asked, “What’s going on at home?”

Ning Junyan said softly, “I’ve hidden someone who is waiting for me at home.”

When Grandpa heard this, he wrinkled his face with a smile, patted his hand and said, “Then go quickly.”

Ning Junyan said again, “Don’t tell others.”

Grandpa said, “I promise not to tell.”

Ning Junyan returned to the dining room to say goodbye to the others. When Ning Zhanghong heard that he was leaving so soon, he just frowned slightly but nodded without asking anything.

Only Shu Rong was still dissatisfied, and followed Ning Junyan to the place where he parked his car, “It’s fine if you don’t come back at thirty, you’d better make time to come back on the 3rd day of the first month.”

Ning Junyan asked, “Is there something wrong?”

Shu Rong said, “I told you that there were guests at home that day.”

Ning Junyan opened the car door to get in the car, but he felt that Shu Rong looked very unhappy, probably about to lose her temper, so he said, “Okay, I’ll try to come back.”

Shu Rong backed away from the car and stood on the side of the road watching Ning Junyan drive away.

Before the car turned the corner of the driveway in the neighbourhood, Ning Junyan raised his head and took a look in the rearview mirror. He saw Shu Rong still standing on the side of the road, as the view in the rearview mirror changed with the turning of the car, Shu Rong’s figure disappeared from it.

When Ning Junyan arrived home, Chen Yuncheng was setting up a ladder to hang curtains in the living room. He didn’t go out today, so he took down all the curtains at home, washed them, dried them and hung them on the windows.

“Isn’t there an aunt to do the cleaning?” Ning Junyan walked to the side of the ladder and reached out to support Chen Yuncheng’s leg.

There was an auntie at his house who came over regularly to do the cleaning, and a full cleaning should be done before the New Year.

Chen Yuncheng had already hung up the curtains, and was holding onto the ladder to get down, “The auntie can’t finish it all day. I’m free today anyway, so I took down the curtains and washed them.”

As soon as he had just come down two frames on the ladder, Ning Junyan stretched out his hand and hugged him down, put his forehead close to him, and rubbed his face affectionately.

Chen Yuncheng was startled, reached out and hugged his shoulder, and asked, “Why did you come back so early?”

Ning Junyan said, “I came back after dinner, what did you eat tonight and why didn’t you return my messages?”

Chen Yuncheng subconsciously touched the pocket of his trousers, only to realize that he had left his mobile phone on the bed in his room. He hadn’t looked at the mobile phone all night, so he could only say, “I didn’t see it. I ate instant noodles at night.”

Ning Junyan said, “No instant noodles.”

Chen Yuncheng raised his hands to pinch his ears, and said with a smile, “You are really lenient.”

Ning Junyan said in a serious tone, “No instant noodles.”

Chen Yuncheng smiled and promised him, “Okay, next time I will order takeaway instead of instant noodles.”

Ning Junyan went to take a shower, and then dragged Chen Yuncheng who had already returned to his own room, to his room, lying on the bed and hugging Chen Yuncheng tightly in his arms.

Chen Yuncheng stretched out a hand to feel around Ning Junyan’s head.

Ning Junyan asked, “What are you touching?”

Chen Yuncheng said, “I wonder if the injury on your head is still not healed.” During the time when they first met as adults, Chen Yuncheng felt that Ning Junyan had completely changed, yet after a long time, he felt that Ning Junyan had not changed at all.

Ning Junyan said to him, “It’s not healed yet, the injury is inside, you can’t touch it like this.”

Chen Yuncheng smiled. He pinched Ning Junyan’s nose, and then pinched his ears, as he often did when he was a child. Ning Junyan would just look at him stupidly, never knowing to be angry, now Ning Junyan was not angry either, but would kiss him hard.

Only after he was a little out of breath, Chen Yuncheng pushed Ning Junyan away and asked, “Who was there for the reunion dinner tonight?” He had never heard Ning Junyan mention his family before.

Ning Junyan answered his question seriously, “My grandfather, my second uncle’s family, my aunt’s family, and my parents.”

Chen Yuncheng thought of Ning Junyan’s parents whom he met sixteen years ago. He no longer remembered their looks, but his impression of them was they were a tall and handsome middle-aged man and a beautiful and delicate woman, “Are you not in a good relationship with them?” He felt a little strange, he remembered that Ning Junyan’s parents were very emotional when they found him, and his mother even cried bitterly while holding him.

Ning Junyan said, “It doesn’t matter if it’s good or not, maybe I haven’t lived up to their expectations.”

“You are so good and you still can’t meet their expectations?” Chen Yuncheng thought it was unbelievable as he tried to sit up with his hands.

But Ning Junyan didn’t let him move, he had to hold him in his arms and said fiercely, “Don’t move.”

       Chen Yuncheng didn’t move anymore.

Only then Ning Junyan was satisfied, rubbed his hair with Chen Yuncheng’s hands, and said, “I don’t remember things clearly when I was a child, but I remember when they brought me home when I was fourteen, my mother went crazy and took me everywhere for extra lessons, and insisted that I participate in the high school entrance examination at the age of 15 just like others. “

At that time, he almost abandoned his studies for four years, and there was a big gap between him and his peers.

Shu Rong was a person who had plans for her life; Ning Junyan was her only son and she loved him very much, and because of that love, she had higher expectations. After experiencing the great sorrow and joy of losing and finding her son, she calmed down and began to put as much pressure on herself and her son. She believed her son was the best, so she went crazy and took Ning Junyan to make up for all the four years of missing in a year.

Ning Zhanghong might not agree with her ideas, but he never intervened. Most of the time, he shut himself in the study, read documents, or burried himself in hospitals and laboratories. Occasionally when he saw Ning Junyan who was staying up late reading at home, he could only say indifferently, “Come on, don’t let your mother down.”

Studying was not making Ning Junyan suffer too much, so most of the time he calmly watched the parents, enduring Shu Rong’s hysteria that lasted for a long time.

Until one night, not knowing what was in his thoughts, he suddenly threw aside the books and exercises in front of him, opened the door and left alone.

He didn’t get very far before being taken back by his parents.

Shu Rong asked him where he was going in horror.

Ning Junyan said indifferently to her mother, “I’m going to find Chen Yuncheng.”

Ning Zhanghong frowned when he heard this, while Shu Rong grabbed his shoulder and asked him nervously, “What are you looking for him for?” They all knew that Chen Yuncheng was a child who lived with Ning Junyan in the trafficker’s house.

Ning Junyan said, “I miss him.”

The couple looked at each other, Shu Rong grabbed Ning Junyan’s hand and said to him, “What do you miss him for? He has gone home with his parents, you won’t be able to find him.”

Ning Junyan said, “He has no parents.”

Shu Rong said, “Then he’ll have other relatives, and he won’t miss you either, you’ll each have your own lives, you’ll have new friends later, and in time he’ll forget you, and you’ll forget him too.”

Ning Junyan shook his head, “I will never forget Chen Yuncheng.”

Shu Rong turned cold, “Mom will get angry if you say that again, be a good boy and come back with us. Stop thinking about it.”

From that day onwards, apart from taking Ning Junyan to tutoring classes, Shu Rong also added one more thing to his life, which was to take Ning Junyan to see a psychologist.

She did not want Ning Junyan to remember that experience, and even more so, she did not want Ning Junyan to bring up that experience, she felt that it was Ning Junyan’s psychological trauma, and also hers. As long as Ning Junyan mentioned Chen Yuncheng’s name, she would tell Ning Junyan repeatedly that Chen Yuncheng had forgotten about him, that they were both unimportant existences to each other, and that they would meet someone more important later.

Ning Junyan didn’t like Shu Rong’s nervous chatter, and later never mentioned the word Chen Yuncheng again.

The author has something to say:
This is how Ning Junyan’s character takes shape
