Chapter 4 – Confession

Confession

When night fell, Uther used his magic to avoid the detection of passers-by as he sneaked into Eudora’s room through the windows. Eudora had taken a shower and was dressed in loose pajamas. He had picked up a book to distract himself after he couldn’t stop thinking about how much he missed Mr. black dragon. After reading less than two pages, the person he had in mind suddenly jumped in from his window. This made Eudora wonder if he was starting to hallucinate from yearning too much. Fortunately, Uther didn’t let him stay stunned for very long, speaking to him directly: “Eudora, I have something to tell you. I like you, can we be together?”

Plop… Eudora didn’t notice as his book fell to the ground. He was too shocked by Uther’s sudden confession. Uther, on the other hand, was filled with regrets. He thought that he should’ve been more careful and prepared, and that he should’ve brought a bouquet of moonflowers or various gems, but he couldn’t hold on any longer. Eudora had returned to his rightful home and there was no reason for them to stay together anymore. When he stayed at the guest room prepared by the emperor and his wife, he realized that he was not used to sleeping alone. This anxious feeling ate at him, long into the night. No longer able to bear this feeling in his heart, he rushed to Eudora to express his thoughts that had long plagued his mind.

Silence befell upon the two in the bedroom and Uther was starting to regret his crude confession, but Eudora himself did not react. “Will you promise to be my mate?” Uther asked again after seeing Eudora frozen there. Eudora snapped back to the present afterwards, lowering his head, whispering his willingness to accept. After all, it was a happy thing to be confessed by the one you liked. It was great that the gentle and powerful Mr. black dragon liked him back.

“I love you, Eudora.” Uther hugged Eudora after hearing his reply. “Unfortunately, I didn’t prepare anything… Not even flowers, so I must make it up to you next time, I promise I will. Eudora said nothing about this, but Uther took his promise to heart. From then on, for each day they were together, Eudora would always receive flowers from Uther.

“By the way, I still have something to tell you. Do you remember the dragon couple that came to you when you were much younger?” Uther asked Eudora, who let go of his hands. “It was them who proposed that I pretended to be a princess to avoid the curse caused by black magic, or so I heard from my parents. It was thanks to them that I could grow up healthy. What’s wrong? Why did you suddenly ask about this?” Eudora was puzzled.

Uther replied, “I recognized your parents after entering the palace. As a child, I had accompanied my own parents to this place before. At the time, you were still in your infancy but I thought you looked beautiful even then.”

“Was that dragon couple your parents? Were you the one who had given me dragon scales?” Eudora was surprised.

“Yes, it seems that we were destined to be together for a long time. When I was a child, I must’ve somehow known that you would be my fated mate so I gave you my scale.” Uther started to speak nonsensically. “It was also possible that this dragonscale brought you to me, which shows that you were also destined to be mine.”

Eudora retorted. “What nonsense, how can there be such abstract things like that? I was so young then, it’s not like you were able to foresee all that.”

Uther replied seriously, “Er, to be frank, I always thought that you were a girl, but nevertheless, I’m really grateful to have given you my scale so that time could bring you back to me.”

Eudora thought about his words for a moment and felt that there was some truth to it. If he hadn’t kept the dragonscale close with him, maybe he would’ve died at sea and never had the chance to meet Uther. Fate really was amazing, and Eudora feels warm when he thinks of this.

The atmosphere was just right and it was unclear who made the first move, but they kissed each other naturally. Their tongues entangled, exchanging their love for one another. Just outside the window, the stars were shining brightly as a breeze blew into the bedroom, knocking the stack of papers filled with poems onto the ground as the room was filled with lewd, wet sounds and faint breathing, for a new chapter in their story had just begun.

Chapter 4

TL: Kyoko Sagaki

Not long after the lights went out, Souichirou spoke to Fumiya from within the darkness.

“…Are you asleep yet?”

He knew Fumiya wasn’t asleep.

About a month had passed since they had become roommates, and Souichirou had come to learn that Fumiya had trouble sleeping. Because of his sleeping issues, he would often wake up in the middle of the night.

As Fumiya tossed and turned over and over, Souichirou wondered what was eating at him so much.

“N-No, not yet… not at all. Are… Are you thirsty? Shall I… get you some water?”

“No, that’s okay.”

“…Then, what should I… do?” Fumiya asked, as if at a loss. “I-I can’t play, the sha… shamisen at this hour… so…”

“In that case, we’ll just have to settle down.”

“…All… All right.”

Souichirou wasn’t sleeping all that well either.

Since he was young, looking back on the day’s events before he went to bed had been a part of his daily routine. But now that he was in his last year of school, he also had to think about the family and future that had been on the back burner up until now.

Long nights passed with the two of them lost in their thoughts; they still weren’t close enough to confide in one another.

When he heard his roommate’s breathing deepen, Souichirou assumed that he had finally fallen asleep.

Hmph… How dare a retainer fall asleep before his master? he thought to himself, a chuckle slipping past his lips.

Regardless of how it looked to other people, Souichirou giving orders and Fumiya obeying them were working well.

There was no way he couldn’t be satisfied with how enthusiastically Fumiya obeyed his unreasonable demands. Souichirou didn’t care at all if he gained the animosity of the stalwarts who had become attached to Fumiya, or if the juniors who had viewed him with such admiring eyes were disillusioned by his actions.

And anyway, I’m an exiled prince, and I’ve finally met the retainer who chased me here.

He had a feeling that by Fumiya fulfilling his demands, it affirmed his entire existence; that side of Fumiya pleased him. So, even if he had fallen asleep before him, he wouldn’t criticize him.

“I’m pretty tired now myself.”

The bed creaked as Souichirou turned over to lie more comfortably on his side. Before long, he was asleep, breathing rhythmically through his well-shaped nose.

Fumiya was not asleep yet.

Granted, it wasn’t as if he had forbidden himself as the retainer to fall asleep before his master, but it wasn’t a good thing that Souichirou was so worried about him that he couldn’t sleep.

He opened his eyes to the darkness, careful to keep his breathing quiet and deep.

Fumiya knew that Souichirou was giving him orders for his sake. He could even say he was thankful that Souichirou was playing the role of the selfish prince.

Finally… It seems like he’s fallen asleep.

The minute he thought that Souichirou had fallen asleep, Fumiya quickly got up.

Careful not to make any noise, he left the room. Stepping softly on the creaky floorboards of the hallway, he crept towards the shared washbasin which had five faucets.

Taking a sip of water, he realized he was much thirstier than he’d thought. He filled an aluminum cup and drank it down in one gulp.

As the water cooled the inside of his body, the headache that had resulted from him thinking too hard began to settle down.

…There are still two years until I graduate. There’s no need… for me to get so worried about the future yet, he reminded himself.

Suddenly, the hallway window shook with a clatter as it was hit by the wind. When he looked through the glass, he could see the trees trying to fight away the wind with their branches in the darkness.

Fumiya concealed the sound of his footsteps as he went down the stairs, and narrowly managed to get through the passage to the roof.

The rough wind was damp: it looked like a spring storm was on the way. It would anticipate the fall of all the cherry blossoms, and then come through to toughen up the new leaves. It was something to be welcomed.

It would water the fields and revive the rivers that had started to dry up.

Since it was nighttime and everyone was asleep, Fumiya wouldn’t mind if the violent rain arrived. It didn’t matter whose roof or whose land it was, the rain would fall indiscriminately. He hoped it would weaken the disease lurking in the dry land.

Fumiya kept those happy thoughts as he watched the old leaves dance in the wind.

Soon after, rain started to fall. Stirred up by the strong wind, the water was blown over onto the passage. Because of where he stood, Fumiya’s legs were drenched.

According to the calendar, it was already April, but the rain still wasn’t at all warm. His soaked toes were already turning red.

As he stood there, as if rooted the ground, he felt a wool cardigan being gently wrapped around his shoulders.

“Ah!”

Fumiya turned around and realized that it was Souichirou.

“Kobori, we’re going back to our room.”

Was he woken up by the rain, and realized Fumiya wasn’t there?

“Don’t wander around in the middle of the night in such light clothing.”

“…I-I knew there was, a spring storm coming, so I thought I would wel… welcome…”

“Of course. This rain is a blessing.”

When the storm ended, the time for farmers to begin planting rice would arrive. With that, vibrant greens would decorate the country landscapes.

With Souichirou forcing him to head back, Fumiya reluctantly returned to their room.

He went to his bed straight away, but the cold still lingering in his body stopped him from sleeping – it seemed the chill had gotten to him even more than he thought.

As Fumiya kept tossing and turning, Souichirou lifted up his bedspread.

“Guess there’s no helping it, huh? Come on, get in.”

He didn’t even think of turning him down. It was the prince’s exalted order, so he obeyed.

They tucked themselves into Souichirou’s warm bed, lying in the same direction like two spoons. Fumiya’s cold feet inserted themselves between Souichirou’s, allowing the older’s heat to warm him up.

“This is just for today.”

“O-Okay.”

He wondered how long it had been since someone had warmed him up like this.

Up until he entered elementary school, he had slept in the same futon as his adoptive mother, but eventually, his adoptive father had forbidden him from doing so, saying that he was old enough to sleep by himself. Fumiya still had not forgotten the sadness and bitterness he had felt at being reprimanded for sneaking into his older stepsister’s futon.

That sense of security that the feeling of another’s skin gave him only lasted until his body became warm.

When his frozen mind started working again, he began to feel uneasy about the arms wrapped around him – the strength, heat and smell were all different from a woman’s.

He’d always hated being touched by men—no, in fact, it was more than hate: it was a disgust so intense it gave him goosebumps.

Everything’s… Everything’s okay. This is Akamatsu-senpai. He wouldn’t do that kind of thing to me, Fumiya told himself, but after accidentally conjuring up the memory of that horrible event, he found it impossible to drive it back out. He couldn’t stop his body from tensing up.

His mind was beginning to lose focus and it had become difficult to breathe.

“…I-I’m, okay now. I-I’ve warmed up.”

Hurriedly, Fumiya crawled out of Souichirou’s arms.

Thankfully, he’d started to fall asleep, so he thought nothing of Fumiya’s ungrateful impatience.

“…This bed is too small for two people, huh?” he muttered with a yawn.

“I… guess so.”

Fumiya returned to his own cold bed.

Although he had calmed down, as the warmth he’d gained began to leave his body, the feeling of misery intensified. Because of his cowardice and excessive self-consciousness, he’d missed out on what could have potentially been an extremely pleasant situation.

Be that as it may, it wasn’t normal for two young men to share a bed. He couldn’t know what the stalwarts would think of it, but there was little doubt in his mind that they wouldn’t simply think of it as two men becoming friends.

But it wasn’t as if Souichirou had touched Fumiya in a sexual manner. All he had been trying to do was warm Fumiya up.

Thinking Souichirou had long been asleep, Fumiya muttered to himself, not intending for the older to hear.

“I-I’m, an… adopted child. I w-was adopted by a family, that has generations of doctors… I-I didn’t know I wasn’t related by blood to my, adoptive parents until… I was s-six.”

“…You’ve been through some stuff, too, huh?”

Not expecting an answer, Fumiya’s heart jumped.

“I’m not very good… at studying… but, I have to… have to become a d-doctor.”

“Do you want to be one?”

Fumiya shook his head – he didn’t.

“But, I… I want to be a part of the family…”

“I see.”

His response was simply to show that he had heard him; he wasn’t pressing him to say more.

And with that, the conversation ended.

Maybe Souichirou had finally fallen asleep.

The storm still hasn’t stopped.

He could hear the window clattering, along with the distress of the roof passage as rain violently pounded on it. The trees in the courtyard were probably being battered by the vicious wind.

When Fumiya told himself to go to sleep and pulled the covers up over his shoulders, Souichirou said in an extremely tired, muffled voice,

“…A doctor isn’t a bad profession. But to me, your tanka was a pleasant surprise.”

Those words went straight to Fumiya’s heart.

“N… Next time I write a poem, I, I’ll show it to… you first.”

“Please do.”

When he turned to look at the bed beside him, he could vaguely see Souichirou in the darkness.

Lying sprawled on his side, he reached his arm out towards Fumiya.

In response, Fumiya reached his hand out as well.

Souichirou’s large palm gripped Fumiya’s hand.

Do princes and retainers shake hands, I wonder…?

Fumiya was glad the room was dark: his face and ears were abnormally hot, and he knew he was completely red.

Hello!! Thanks for reading!! Help or support by buying me coffee, greatly appreciated thank you!

Chapter 39

At the end of the performance, warm applause broke out at the memorial meeting, and even some of the audience had tears in their eyes.

Although Wen Jianing’s fans didn’t know why Ke Xinhang appeared here, no matter what his purpose was, everyone could see his sincerity in this song and dance. Only if he sincerely missed Wen Jianing could he have such an attentive interpretation.

Wen Jianing bowed and hurriedly left the stage without saying anything.

However, his performance had been photographed and posted on the Internet, and the online media had forwarded it one after another, saying that Ke Xinhang appeared in Wen Jianing’s memorial activities and performed Wen Jianing’s old works.

Early the next morning, Wen Jianing received a call from Wen Tinghuan and asked him what the hell was going on.

“It’s nothing,” he sat on the bed, rubbing his sleepy eyes.

Wen Tinghuan said, “Do you know that it was a commercial event? Did they invite you? Did they pay for your appearance?”

“Ting jie,” Wen Jianing said, “I just want to do something to commemorate Wen Jianing. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be so obsessed with entering this industry.”

Wen Tinghuan sighed and said after a moment of silence, “I’ll go help to talk to Zheng laoshi, but don’t do this again in the future. At least say something to the company, and you shouldn’t be too fearless to offend the boss.”

  Wen Jianing said, “I understand.”

Two days later, when he went back to the company, Zheng Xin didn’t make a fuss about this matter with him. He just said, “Nice dance.”

Wen Jianing said, “I’m just randomly jumping around.”

Zheng Xin said, “What Wen Jianing did in that movie is also the effect of jumping randomly, and it looks good. If you are lucky, I hope that it can bring you more attention.”

Wen Jianing smiled, “I hope so.”

Zheng Xin then asked him, “Are you ready?”

Wen Jianing was slightly confused and didn’t understand what he was talking about.

Zheng Xin smiled, “I looked at your next work plan, yours and Wen Lin’s drama will soon be broadcasted on Starlight TV. Except for two drama promotion notices, you have no other schedule for the time being. I was planning to arrange some acting classes for you, but after watching your drama clips and your performance at Wen Jianing’s memorial activities that day, I think it’s a bit redundant. It’s better for you to maintain your current natural state, and you don’t need to add some calculated performance elements. “

As Wen Jianing heard Zheng Xin say this, he thought what Zheng Xin said as a natural and casual way of interpretation that Wen Jianing had shown this far was thanks to years of accumulated experience which in a sense was not natural.

Zheng Xin continued, “So I have discussed it with Manager Bai. I plan to pick up the movie for you, and I’m going to choose it carefully. I’m not going to pick random movies, either I choose an eye-catching stunt in a big production or choose a small budget movie with a beautiful script. Anyway, it’s not urgent, and we will discuss it slowly. So I ask you if you are ready? It may not give you the opportunity to quickly accumulate popularity like making an idol drama.”

Wen Jianing nodded seriously, “I’m ready,” he said.

Zheng Xin patted him on the shoulder, “Adjust your condition and mentality. Let’s work hard together.”

“Thank you,” Wen Jianing thanked him solemnly.

When he came out of Zheng Xin’s office, Wen Jianing saw that it was still early and went to the gym upstairs. He couldn’t go to the gym outside now. Occasionally, when the company’s gym was empty, he would go there to practice with equipment. He wanted to train his body to be a little bulkier, and not be so thin.

When Wen Jianing arrived, he thought that no one would be there, and he did not expect to see Yi Nan running on the treadmill.

Yi Nan wore a pair of tight-fitting sports shorts with a black tank top. He looked sturdy and slender.

Wen Jianing couldn’t help looking at Yi Nan’s lower part. He was wrapped in a pair of black sweatpants, but he could see the outline clearly.

Yi Nan noticed Wen Jianing’s sight, took a towel to cover his lower body, his face flushed and cursed, “You pervert!”

Wen Jianing felt that he was indeed turning into a pervert. He couldn’t help but want to pay attention to other people’s things that he didn’t have.

The gym was not big. So when Wen Jianing went to practice with equipment, Yi Nan’s treadmill was not far from him. At this time, Yi Nan stopped, walked to him and pulled the chest expander next to him randomly, and asked him, “Did you went to see Zheng Xin just now?”

Wen Jianing replied, “Well, what’s the matter?”

Yi Nan didn’t say anything, but Wen Jianing saw his expression and thought he might have something on his mind.

In fact, Yi Nan felt a little embarrassed now. Among the top picks from the competition, the girl named Lin Qingyu chose to terminate the contract. He, Wen Lin and Wen Jianing were the three people whom the company attached the most importance to. He also sand with Jiang Yongfei, made a single MV, and even held a small solo concert in the middle.

However, Yi Nan obviously felt that his popularity had been declining since the end of the competition. On the contrary, his situation was not as good as Wen Jianing and Wen Lin, who were now preparing to broadcast the TV series.

He felt that he shouldn’t lose to them.

In fact, before Wen Jianing talked with Zheng Xin today, he also wanted to talk to Zheng Xin. But when he heard that Wen Jianing was inside, he didn’t go in.

Wen Jianing could guess what Yi Nan was thinking. He knew that Yi Nan was confused and did not know who to talk to about his confusion.

He put down the barbell, Wen Jianing felt that he could be a confidant brother to Yi Nan. He said, “Do you know Wen Jianing?”

Yi Nan said, “You don’t say!”

Wen Jianing said, “Do you know how many minor roles Wen Jianing played before he became the Film Emperor? No, it should be before he played the leading role?”

  Yi Nan didn’t speak.

Wen Jianing then said, “Your starting point is higher than most people. Do you expect the world to pay attention as soon as you are born? Then you are born in the wrong body. It is only possible to happen if you are born in the British royal family.”

Yi Nan glanced at him, and suddenly said, “My mother is Yun Shuying.”

Wen Jianing looked at him in a slightly surprised tone, “The cloud beauty?”

Yun Shuying was an old movie actress. Although she looked very beautiful, her acting skills were actually very ordinary. The nickname of ‘Cloud Beauty’ was somewhat ironic, meant that her acting skills were dull, and just like a beautiful vase. When Yun Shuying stopped acting, she said she married a Chinese American, and then there was no news after that.

As he looked carefully at Yi Nan. He was indeed somewhat similar to Yun Shuying, especially in his eyebrows and eyes.

Yi Nan sat down next to Wen Jianing and said, “My father doesn’t support me. Only my mother supports me. In the beginning, my father firmly opposed me from participating in the Voice of the Soul. But I must keep going. I also say some cruel words such as that I will show them some achievements. Unexpectedly, my mother entrusted someone to buy it for me.”

“Don’t say that,” said Wen Jianing. “Who do you think is a threat to your championship? Me and Wen Lin?”

Yi Nan smiled bitterly and didn’t speak.

Wen Jianing said, “Aren’t you always confident in yourself? Don’t give up so easily. Give yourself some more confidence. Even without your mom, the champion of the Voice of the Soul is still yours.”

Yi Nan turned to look at him.

But Wen Jianing was glancing at Yi Nan’s crotch again.

Yi Nan’s face turned black all of a sudden, he took a towel to block his view again, and said angrily, “Are you sick?”

Wen Jianing said seriously, “Don’t you think it’s inappropriate for you to be dressed like this?”

Yi Nan became annoyed, “How is it inappropriate? What should I wear to run here? You think you’re wearing appropriate attire like this?”

As he spoke, he reached out and tried to pull Wen Jianing’s loose-fitting sweatpants.

Wen Jianing closed their legs together and avoided his hands. He almost broke a cold sweat out of fear.

Yi Nan didn’t say anything, and he was not persistent. He stood up and walked toward the bathroom, not wanting to stay in the gym with Wen Jianing anymore.

Wen Jianing’s heartbeat hadn’t recovered yet. He vowed to never provoke Yi Nan again.

‘The Strange Fate of Hairpin and Phoenix’ was launched officially. It was hard to get a visual sense of how popular the drama was with data like ratings, but the internet was a different story. On the first day of the broadcast, the top two topics on Weibo were related to the TV series ‘The Strange Fate of Hairpin and Phoenix’.

Everyone seemed to be able to predict that Wen Jianing and Wen Lin would use this drama to make a big hit.

They were just hoping that it was not a short-time success.

On the Saturday of the official broadcast, Starlight station aired the pre-recorded entertainment program, and the previous topic of Yuan Qian was being difficult on-air was once again brought up. Regardless of whether the original intention was to hype or not, it had added fire to the popularity of the TV series.

On the same Saturday, Lu Jinlang called Wen Jianing to see the house.

When he answered Lu Jinlang’s call, Wen Jianing was taken aback and asked, “What house are you looking at?”

Lu Jinlang said, “Did you forget what I told you before?”

Wen Jianing suddenly recalled that Lu Jinlang was talking about moving in with him.

The villa on the outskirts of the city was inconvenient, so Lu Jinlang bought a house next to his apartment in the city centre. Originally there were only two tenants on the first floor, but now the entire top floor was Lu Jinlang’s house, so he opened up the two houses.

When Wen Jianing arrived, he saw a complete set of flats that had been cleaned up. He stood in the middle of the living room, and felt a little dazed.

The decoration styles of the two houses were different. In order to move in as soon as possible, Lu Jinlang did not redecorate, but only placed some furniture. Now it looked a little strange to stand in the house.

And he went through not a door, but a wall directly, and now it looks extra spacious.

Living in this place, you didn’t have to be afraid to be found by the reporter. There was a park and green space outside the window and there were no tall buildings, so you wouldn’t have to worry about being photographed. Even if the reporter came upstairs, Wen Jianing could say that he rented the next room, and no one would know what was inside.

It was possible to live here with Lu Jinlang.

Lu Jinlang hugged him from behind and asked, “How about it?”

Wen Jianing said, “I’m wondering if I should cancel the lease of that old house.”

Lu Jinlang said softly, “You are a big star now, and it’s not appropriate to live in a small house like that.”

“I’m a big star?” Wen Jianing asked amusedly.

Lu Jinlang said, “I watched your TV series, and you performed well.”

Wen Jianing suddenly felt a little dumbfounded.

When Wen Jianing stayed at night, he and Lu Jinlang sat on the sofa in the living room to watch an entertainment show. When he saw Yuan Qian, Lu Jinlang suddenly said, “Li Rong and Yuan Qian broke up.”

Wen Jianing was not surprised at all. He thought it was an inevitable thing.

Although he was not close with Li Rong, he had been in contact with him several times. He didn’t know what Yuan Qian was expecting. She wanted her man to be handsome, rich and romantic. This kind of man could only be found in romantic novels.

There were too many requirements, and in the end, there could only be nothing left.

There seemed to be nothing good in the entertainment program for Wen Jianing to see. It was originally meant to entertain the audience, but Wen Jianing thought he and Wen Lin looked a little silly on it. One was not good at acting in this variety show, and the other was looked like he hadn’t acted in variety shows for a long time. Both looked a little chaotic.

But Lu Jinlang watched it with great enthusiasm.

While Lu Jinlang was watching TV, Wen Jianing stood up and opened his arms, and exclaimed, “The house is big!” Unlike his small rental house, where it seemed that he can touch the walls on both sides with his open arms.

Lu Jinlang said to him, “Tomorrow I will ask Yunan to help you pack up and move over.”

When he heard what he said, Wen Jianing thought that the day the two could relax had come to an end. He had to work hard to move things back, which was too troublesome. But by that day, perhaps because he had already bought another big house, so there was no need to go back to that small rented house.

As he was thinking so, Wen Jianing turned his head and said to Lu Jinlang, “Okay, but don’t trouble Yunan, I’ll let Ting jie arrange it for me.”

  Lu Jinlang did not object.

Wen Jianing hoped that Lu Jinlang would not let him move out too early, at least until he had bought a house.

The next day, Wen Tinghuan went to Wen Jianing’s small rental house to help him pack things up.

While they were tidying up, Wen Tinghuan couldn’t help but say to him, “What are you thinking about? Are you really going to move in to live with Lu Jinlang?”

“Well,” Wen Jianing replied. He was clearing the drawer in front of the computer desk, which contained all the things left by Ke Xinhang in the past, as well as a diary that recorded Ke Xinhang’s body secrets. He intended to take these things to Lu Jinlang’s place together. Anyway, Lu Jinlang knew his secret best, and he felt relieved if he stayed with Lu Jinlang.

Wen Tinghuan kept nagging him. Wen Jianing was neither impatient nor unhappy. On the contrary, he could feel that Wen Tinghuan really cared about him. This feeling was actually quite good.

He just said at the end, “You are like my mother.”

Wen Tinghuan stopped, “Who do you think I’m doing this for? It’s not for you.”

“Ting jie,” Wen Jianing said, “Help me look for a house, not too expensive. I want to buy another house.”

Wen Tinghuan looked at him, “Why? Vacation house?”

  Wen Jianing smiled, “You understand.”

“Oh—” Wen Tinghuan said, “Might as well find a girl to fall in love with.”

Wen Jianing answered her silently in his heart: Unfortunately, it will never be possible.

Wen Tinghuan helped him pack up his things and then asked someone from the company to find a car to help move the things. Wen Jianing did not personally deal with it himself, and Wen Tinghuan properly helped him send everything to Lu Jinlang’s apartment.

Lu Yunan waited outside the elevator, moving everything into the room one by one.

Wen Tinghuan suddenly became a little curious, and asked, “Can I go in and take a look?”

Lu Yunan said politely, “Please come in.” Anyway, since Wen Jianing would move here in the future, it was estimated that Wen Tinghuan would have to come in and out often.

Wen Tinghuan walked into Lu Jinlang’s big house and couldn’t help but sighed when he saw an open large living room directly. Then he saw Lu Yunan take Wen Jianing’s suitcase into the master bedroom.

She followed in, stood at the door and took a look, and asked, “Is this God Lu’s room?”

“Well,” Lu Yunan leaned the box against the wall because Wen Jianing said he would pack the clothes himself.

Wen Tinghuan took a tour and exclaimed, “This is the rhythm of newlyweds.”

Lu Yunan said, “Mr. Lu and Xinhang have a very good relationship.”

Wen Tinghuan couldn’t help but snort slightly and said disapprovingly, “How good is it? You don’t know how many people lived in this house before Xinhang.”

Lu Yunan looked at her and said nothing.

In the evening, Wen Jianing personally organized his things. He opened the wardrobe and saw that half of the wardrobe was full of Lu Jinlang’s clothes.

In fact, Lu Jinlang didn’t live here often in the past. Although he had a set of daily necessities, many clothes were not here. Now most of them were casual clothes, which was also suitable for him to wear on vacation.

When he looked at Lu Jinlang’s clothes in the wardrobe, Wen Jianing had a peculiar feeling. He had never tried to live with someone before. He had a girlfriend who had a brief relationship before, but the two had never lived together.

Lu Jinlang just walked in and said to him, “I remodel the bedroom next door into a coat room, but it’s newly renovated. Please wait two months before putting your clothes in.”

  “Okay,” Wen Jianing said.

Lu Jinlang went over, sat down by the bed, put his hands in his trouser pockets, and asked, “What do you think of the place?”

Wen Jianing said, “Of course it’s much better than mine.” The current neighbourhood was carefully selected by Lu Jinlang before. The large parks outside with  complete surrounding facilities and high-end property management, it couldn’t be any better.

Lu Jinlang smiled, and said, “I’m talking about the atmosphere at home.”

Wen Jianing turned around and walked up to him, looking up and down at him, “Just the fact that the great Film Emperor Lu is sitting here, you can give full mark.”

Lu Jinlang stretched out his hand from his trouser pocket and held Wen Jianing’s waist with both hands. As a man, Wen Jianing’s waist was a little thin. In fact, Lu Jinlang often wondered if Wen Jianing’s endocrine was affected by his physiological structure. Wen Jianing’s body was always slimmer and softer than that of an adult man. Lu Jinlang couldn’t say whether this was good or bad. He actually hoped to see him gradually become a mature and attractive man. Lu Jinlang was a born homosexual. He still preferred a beautiful and handsome man compared to a boy who was androgynous.

Wen Jianing lowered his head to kiss Lu Jinlang’s lips. But when Lu Jinlang was about to kiss him, Wen Jianing moved his head and avoided it. After repeating this several times, Lu Jinlang laughed.

“Like a child,” Lu Jinlang said to him.

Wen Jianing was in a daze when he heard this sentence. He also felt that he was a little childish when he did this action. He would never do this kind of thing with his lover in the past. Probably everyone acted differently in front of other people. When he was with Lu Jinlang, he would naturally make some childish behaviours, perhaps because Lu Jinlang could give him a sense of dependence.

Chapter 3 – Introductions and returns

Introduction and returns

Uther returned back outside. Sweaty, he went to the forest where there was a big waterfall to meditate. After calming down, he rushed back to the cave, picking a handful of wildflowers on the way back, hoping to cheer up the little beauty. He had read in a book that giving a lady beautiful flowers and telling them that they were as pretty as the said flowers will allow him to gain the favour of the lady. Although the little beauty was a male… it should be somewhat… applicable. Uther thought about it nervously with the flowers in his hands but when he approached Eudora, he realized the other person had already fallen asleep. He slept very peacefully with his long hair spread out on the fur, very akin to the elves he met when he journeyed to the tree of life with his parents as a young lad.

Uther placed the flowers next to the little beauty’s bed before turning off the surrounding lights, leaving only some glowing crystals. After thinking for a while, he returned to his original form and circled his body around the little beauty before shutting his eyes. Before drifting asleep, he thought that sleeping like this was much better than sleeping in his piles of gold. Compared to the beauty, gold was both cold and hard.

When Eudora woke up in the morning, he saw a tall black mountain? After looking around for a while, he realized that it had been the real form of Mr. black dragon. He really was a beautiful being. His whole body was black and shiny with sharp claws and sturdy wings – all of an adult black dragon that was in his prime. Uther opened his eyes to find the beauty staring at him curiously. He waggled his tail in response and said to the little beauty: “So you’ve finally woken up. There are fruits next to you if you’re hungry. If you’re scared, I can transform back to my human self.” It was only then when Eudora had noticed the wildflowers beside the fruits. He asked: “Are these flowers for me? Thank you Mr. black dragon, I love them very much. I also like Mr. black dragon’s original form.” Uther fluttered his wings shyly after hearing those words, replying: “If you like, you can transform into your own dragon form if you think it fits you well. Also, no need to call me Mr. black dragon, you can call me Uther.” Eudora smiled and nodded, telling Uther that he could also call him Eudora. They both exchanged their names that morning and entrusted themselves to the other.

One month passed in a blink of an eye and they soon developed deeper feelings for each other. Every morning, Uther would fly outside to find herbs or wild fruits for Eudora, oftentimes bringing back a variety of gifts for him which ranged from flowers to golden treasures. Uther found many human books for Eudora and also told him many stories about dragons and the other races which made Eudora fall for Uther even more. Uther’s voice is magnetic and the stories he’s told are also very interesting. With a face like that, it was easy to fall in love with him. Eudora was already enamored with him, and as their time together went on, he only became more and more drawn to Mr. black dragon. The thought of living here with Uther for the rest of his life even crossed his mind, but his yearning for his parents placed him in a dilemma. It was late one day when Uther was sitting on one side of his bed, as per usual. He picked up a book and started reading. Eudora’s legs were almost completely healed by now and he could now move around slowly. Due to this, Uther had gone out to find an ebony branch, trimming it so Eudora could use it as a crutch. Because of this, Eudora’s favorability towards Uther has skyrocketed.

Uther had also prepared himself to send Eudora away on the day his legs finally recovered. Even though he was very unwilling to give the other up, he still took Eudora to the beach conscientiously. Eudora wore the same dress as he did when they had first met. Despite Uther preparing a luxurious men’s outfit for him, Eudora refused it, telling him that he was a princess. Uther had no choice but to just bring him some jewelry so he could make Eudora look more stunning.

After completing all their preparations, Uther turned back into a huge black dragon and lowered his body so Eudora could climb aboard. He then flew towards the mainland. For Eudora, it had been a very novel experience sitting on his back. Uther greatly slowed down the speed at which he was flying at for him so it was a steady and slow flight. This allowed Eudora to carefully take in the breathtaking view as they passed though flocks of seabirds, met giant whales coming to the surface of the ocean to take a breath of air, as well as a group of courting dolphins.

When a barrier of coral reefs entered his vision, only then did Eudora realize that they were about to reach the mainland. This also meant that he and Uther were soon about to go their separate ways, which made his reluctance to leave the other rise up in his heart. The contradictory feeling made him realize that he had fallen in love with Uther, this careful, gentle and somewhat lonely Mr. black dragon. He didn’t know what Uther would make of it. Would he like him back too? Eudora shook his head, trying to get Mr. black dragon out of his mind, trying to get his heart to stop beating so quickly, but it was for naught. After arriving on the mainland, Uther found a remote area to land at. After transforming into his human form, he asked around to find where the nearest city was, while also finding a carriage to get there – after all, his dragon form would be rather conspicuous on the mainland.

After doing so, Uther took Eudora to a tavern and bought him some food, hoping to alleviate Eudora’s fatigue by filling his stomach. For a sturdy-skinned dragon like him, a long journey across the sea was no problem at all, however humans were different. They are fragile creatures in comparison. Uther recalled the knowledge he had read about humans in a book as he ordered a meal from the owner of the establishment.

Uther fed the nicely-cut steak to Eudora. The soft gold of the atmospheric light landed on Eudora as he sat quietly opposite him, also drinking the warm broth in the bowl and eating the yummy steak fed to him. Seeing Eudora like this made Uther’s heart soft. The thought that he might fall in love with the other suddenly made itself known to Uther. During the time they had spent together in the cave, from the time they had spent the beginning only reading by themselves without bothering the other, up to the point they had unknowingly drifted closer and even slept together after reading to each other. Even just up till recently, when Eudora was finally able to walk around, they both went for walks together near the cliff’s shore, watching fireflies and hunting together. Although Eudora was known as a princess, he had been given a private education demanded of a successor to the royal family. Uther realized this when he saw that the other’s arms were lean and muscular. Although his leg had been injured, he could still see power and grace in the way the other had handled the prey they hunted. Their feelings grew day by day after getting along, despite them being unaware of it themselves. It was not until they realized that they would soon be separated that their feelings began making themselves known.

After thinking it through, Uther finally understood this and was ready to confess his feelings to Eudora, hoping that Eudora would agree and come to stay by his side. But what if Eudora rejected him? As he rethought it again and again, Uther and Eudora also reached the Country of Hessel. From the moment he stepped into the palace, Uther was overcome by an indescribable sense of familiarity. It wasn’t until Eudora had introduced his parents to him that Uther was certain that the person in front of him had been the ‘little princess’ he had once met when he was younger. For this reason, he felt that this had been fate working its gears, strengthening his resolve to confess to Eudora.

Chapter 2 – A band-aid

A bandage

Because he had been drifting along in the sea for a long period of time, Eudora didn’t realize that his leg was injured. It wasn’t until his damp clothes began to feel a little uncomfortable that he wanted to change out of them when he had discovered an angry white blister. Who knows where the dragon had found it, but Eudora soon donned a pure white nightgown. Uther had insisted that he shouldn’t wear pants on top of his injury and handed him the lacy white dress. Eudora felt that there was some other ulterior motive behind this but did not reject Uther’s proposal.

Of course, this was after he went through the trouble of rejecting the other selection of dresses Eudora had given him so he couldn’t refuse. Taking a careful look at Eudora’s wound, Uther told him that it might take a little over a month for it to heal and when it healed, he would set out for the continent across the sea with him. For now, the dragon went to find some herbs and food for him in the forest, handing him a transparent crystal. He told Eudora to break it should an emergency arise and he will rush back immediately. After explaining this, Uther exited by jumping off the cliff, promptly turning into a dragon and flying off into the distance.

In the cave, Eudora laid on the fluffy fur, observing the light emanating from the crystal in his hand. Suddenly, he was reminded of something and dug into the pockets of the dress he had recently changed into and pulled out a dragonscale. It was something that his parents had passed to him very early on in his memories. They told him that it was gifted to him by the dragon couple who helped him and he had always kept the memento close by even after so many years. Eudora placed the transparent crystal and the dragonscale together as his mind drifted towards Uther. He felt that the other was a good and compassionate dragon. After he’s returned home, he must allow his parents to repay the black dragon. Thinking about this, he soon fell asleep.

Eudora later awoke to the pain in his leg. Uther had brought back some water, herbs and wild fruit. He had been grinding down herbs by the bed. After realizing that he had woken up, he soaked a clean handkerchief into the water, wetting it. Uther gave Eudora a washed fruit as he sat up halfway on the bed, “This is very sweet, use it to suppress your hunger first. Due to your injury, you shouldn’t eat anything too heavy for now. When it is healed, I will bring you rabbit hunting. Now, I’m going to bandage your wound for you. It may hurt at first, but please bear with it.” Eudola accepted the fruit obediently and ate it in small bites, allowing Uther to hold his right leg. He was shy, so his toes had been slightly curled up, making his foot seem round and cute. Uther looked down on his hands and feet and wondered what would happen if he licked a stripe from his toes all the way to his thighs.

Feeling bothered by his own nasty thoughts, Uther quickly brushed them off and carefully wiped the skin around the wound with a cloth. “His skin really is pale and pretty. Even the little beauty’s ankles are so thin that you can encircle it with one hand. I bet the red anklet with a golden bell in my possession would look great around it. The nightdress he adorned also looked wonders on him. I thought he would’ve refused it but the little prince really is too much of a tease. I must let him try on the black one tomorrow.” Uther started making more plans with ulterior motives in his heart as he fed Eudora the medicine without realizing that his thoughts had been completely inconsistent with his own principles as a gentlemanly dragon. While Uther was still thinking about whether a dark blue princess gown or a red low-cut dress would look prettier on the beauty, Eudora retracted his feet. Uther’s heart grew empty and felt an inexplicable loss. Looking up, it turns out that he has already finished bandaging the wound. Had he really done it that fast? He still hasn’t touched it enough, and should’ve bandaged it more slowly. Uther regretted his actions a little.

Meanwhile Eudora hadn’t realized the various thoughts floating around in Uther’s mind. He just silently commented to himself that Mr black dragon really did love being absent minded all the time despite also being such a careful, gentle person. “Thank you Mr. black dragon, you really are very kind. When I get home, I must remember to repay you well.” Eudora had said. Uther, who had been called a good dragon, only said that it was the least he could do for someone as beautiful as him and turned around to leave. He needed time to calm down and think more about the little beauty. After all, Uther also realized that it might not be good to always be in a daze around the other. Eudora buried his face in the thick fur immediately after the black dragon left. Mr. black dragon looked so handsome when he smiled, he almost couldn’t keep a straight face in front of him. Eudora patted his cheeks that had turned pink, trying to calm himself down, to no avail. Thinking of Mr. black dragon bandaging his wounds only made the pink on his face spread throughout his body.

T/L notes: I think I have a thing for dragons… it probably started when I first read “The reader and the protagonist”, then it was Mr. Zhongli from Genshin Impact. (0///-//0) I also love the mostly draconic cast in Kobayashi’s Maid Dragon, and if I had to pick between Tohru, Kanna, Elma, Lucoa, Fafnir or Ilulu, I’d be pretty torn. ಥ_ಥ

I mean… the reason behind it is really terribly inappropriate and I really shouldn’t elaborate but I think you’ll understand more when you read chapter 9 of this tasty, tasty story. Well, if you have the same tastes as me and already know why  (✧≖ ͜ʖ≖), come shake my hand, comrade. You’re have good taste and are cultured indeed 😀

ALSO, do check out my friend’s translation of Perfection, a rebirth and show-biz novel about a very talented star and his elusive secret wink* wink* right … (☞ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)☞ here I mean the top in that story is also pretty kinky ehe

Chapter 1 – Origins and first encounter

Origins and first encounter

The dragon is just an ordinary one, like in many other fairy tales, this one is dr4p3d in black scales with golden pupils, powerful wings and sharp claws. And as expected, it also experiences problems like all other dragons, in which it likes all things shiny. In its cave, piles of ancient gold coins, leather and furs are messily laid out, as well as some assorted antiques. When this dragon was still a cub, his parents taught him that shiny golden things will one day help it win the heart of his mate, and that a female dragon would choose her beloved partner based on the decor of the male dragon’s lair. This dragon firmly took this advice to heart and worked hard every day to venture out and collect beautiful, shiny objects to fill his place of residence.

The dragon’s lair lies on a cliff close to the sea, and whenever the tide rises, the waves will carry with it some broken ships. These ships all originated from the other side of the world, where humans lived. This particular continent where they lived was called Issikai and there were various kingdoms, both large and small, that made up the land. The dragon only ever went there with his parents as a child, remembering the lonely magicians and wandering misfits. Of course, there was the memory of the gentle emperor and his empress along with their beautiful little princess. The little princess and her pink cheeks with slightly curly locks had still been in her cradle.

At the time, this dragon vaguely remembered that a problem had occurred when the little princess was in the Empress’ womb, and that she had a weird aura. The Emperor couldn’t stand to see his wife upset and decided to ask the Oprah Clan from across the sea, who were this dragon’s parents, for some help. After a long night of discussion between the Emperor and the dragon couple, the Emperor and Empress dismissed the Oprah Clan. Before they left, the young dragon had felt that the color of the little princess’ hair and his own scales bore a striking resemblance in color to one another. He polished a piece of his scale to be made into jewelry for her when she was a little older. It complimented her hair very well, and was therefore regarded as a birthday gift for her. This memory replayed multiple times throughout his life and he oftentimes felt that it was the best decision of his life.

After leaving the mainland of Issekai, the dragon separated from his parents. He had to journey alone to Dragon Valley for his coming-of-age ceremony. Every dragon needed to go through with this process, and only after coming out of this experience will he gain his real name, which symbolized that he was an independent and fully-fledged dragon. In the valley, he had to survive the shedding in order to gain a stronger body and inherit the ancient power of the dragon clan. The other thing he had to do was fully master the ability to transform into his human form.

The dragon instantaneously cut through the air, and then lowered his body, skillfully descending on the beach near the cliff. This dragon also goes by Uther and he has lived here for more than ten years ever since he left Dragon Valley. He spends every day searching for treasure to fill his lair, hoping that his future mate will approve of his home. They can roll around in the gold coins together, soar up in the skies and even make a cute dragon egg. Uther gradually became lost in his thoughts until a huge wave brought him back to reality. This time however, the wave did not bring with it the wreckage of broken ships, but instead a sleeping beauty.

The alluring woman had long black hair that reached her waist and wore a simple but delicate long dress. Her waist was very thin, and from Uther’s perspective, a small part of her white neck could be seen peeking out from her long hair. Subconsciously, Uther’s tail began to waggle as he felt an itchy feeling rise in his throat. After thinking it through, Uther transformed into his human form and walked up to the beauty, picking her up and walking towards the cliff. The beauty’s face was as good-looking as the ones he’s been imagining for a long time now, save for the paleness that resulted from her extended soak in the waters. Suddenly, Uther was struck with an interest to see the beauty after she had opened her eyes. He thought that she would be very beautiful. Dragons had always been weak to beautiful things and the beauty seemed to look very similar to the princess from one of the countries on the opposite continent. With this in mind, the little princess Uther saw as a child popped up in his mind as the color of their hair looked alike.

Due to the lair being situated on a cliff, Uther had to transform back into his original form before flying into his home with the beauty. He picked up a few animal pelts and constructed a simple bed for the beauty. After a second thought, he found an oil lamp and lit it up with magic, placing it next to her bed. After thinking again, he decided to stay in his human form and waited for the beauty to awaken so he could ask about her situation. He was, after all, a gentlemanly dragon.

Uther hadn’t used his human form for a long time now and started to feel a little uncomfortable in it. In order to overcome this strange feeling, Uther simply picked up a book from one of the gold piles to pass the time. After flipping through one third of the book, the beauty laying on the bed finally opened her eyes. It was a pair of the most exquisite irises that resembled the night sky of midsummers, which had the effect of making others unable to look away. The beauty was unresponsive for a while, before she asked in a hoarse voice: “Where is this? Who are you? Did you save me..?” She coughed out loud. This time, it was Uther who froze up. The beauty seemed to be… a man… Eudora looked at the dazed man strangely and began to curiously walk around. He seemed to be in a cave? However, it was really hard to describe the place. With gold spreading out in all directions, he felt like he was going to be blinded if he were to take a second glance. This person before him was indeed strange.

Seeing that the other party was still in a daze, Eudora repeated his question again, to which Uther finally reacted and replied in the common language of the mainland, “This is the far shore opposite the mainland. I am Uther, the black dragon who resides here. I found you on the beach under the cliff. Have you encountered any difficulties… and are you perhaps… male?” After speaking, Uther’s face seemed to burn a bright red. Would it be too presumptuous to ask such a question? Eudora was not shocked after hearing that the other was a black dragon. After all, this was the age of magic and he often met various bards in the palace. In the verses they spun, dragons were not terrible beings. Besides, as a child,a dragon couple had come to his aid so he could grow up healthy and strong. As Eudora processed the information he just received, Uther called out to him after finding more lanterns and luminous crystals to light up his cave.

When Eudora lifted his head again, he could finally see Uther’s face clearly, with short flax hair and dark golden glasses, he was very tall, almost ten inches taller than himself. He had wheat-colored skin with a robust figure which was considered very popular and attractive in his country. Eudora then told the other that he was the prince of a small country on the continent of Issikai and had pretended to be a princess for special reasons so he could travel around. Due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, he had encountered some strong gales and rough waves at sea, causing him to fall into a whirlpool, later waking up here. Eudora asked Uther if he would help bring him home, which the dragon readily agreed. He was a kind dragon after all, plus it was difficult to refuse such a pretty person.

T/L notes: Hey guys! I’m back with another smutty title ahaha, though most of it happens later. For now, I hope you did read through the plot of this short story. Although it’s simple without any conflicts, I hope its simplicity might help pass the time or even lighten the mood if you’re feeling particularly stressed these days, like me . . . . . ᕕ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ᕗ

Our cute third member has finally shown herself 1!1!1! She’s translating a jp novel called Sakura no Kuni ~Kirschblüte~ here. If you like fluffy, slowburn and trauma-healing tropes, I suggest you check it out! It’s also happens to be illustrated by the same mangaka who drew up Ten Count (ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ), so defo worth looking at… I’ve seen the spicy pics, and I’m sure you wanna see them too hehe.

Chapter 3

TL: sync
PR: Emy

While walking down the passageway, Sakamoto noticed his friend circling around the bushes in the courtyard, pushing his way through the grass, sticking his head deeper inside them and tilting it around, before moving on to another area. He called out to him, wondering what he was doing.

Fumiya responded without raising his head.

“I-I’m just… s-searching for something.”

“For what?”

“A-Akamatsu-senpai’s… fountain pen. It f-fell from the… w-window.”

“I’ll help you look for it.”

Sakamoto went straight down to the courtyard.

“What does it look like?”

“I-It’s mostly… black, but… it has some g-gold on it, too. And on the lid… there’s a m-mother-of-pearl design…”

“Whoa, that sounds expensive!”

The two of them knelt down and began pushing through the thickets.

Shiga, a kendo club member who had been with Sakamoto, was still in the passageway, watching the two small boys.

It fell from the third floor? Okay, if the desk was right in front of the window, it might be believable, but people don’t generally put fountain pens on window frames.

Thinking it suspicious, he looked up at the third floor.

He noticed Souichirou standing by one of the windows. Dressed in his usual hakama, he was standing tall and proud, watching his underclassmen searching for his fountain pen.

…What’s with that?

If he had the time to watch them, he could at least try and search for it, too.

Many of the younger students looked up to Souichirou – he was accomplished in both the literary and military arts, he had a sense of justice and he was fair – but seeing him now, Shiga couldn’t help but begin thinking he would need to reconsider his opinion.

It almost seemed like he was taking advantage of the fact he had an underclassman as a roommate.

Souichirou would make Fumiya do ridiculous things, like make him do the laundry instead of the servants which were hired by the staff or make him draw water from the well out the back after the sun had already set or deliberately make him go buy something that could only be bought from a faraway shop so that he would have less time to eat dinner…

Every time, Fumiya would just nod and do what he was asked without complaint; Shiga couldn’t help but think that Souichirou’s conduct was uncalled for.

I didn’t think he was that sort of person…

Shiga was glaring up at Souichirou before he even realized it.

Though I suppose for the son of an earl, treating people like slaves is a normal thing to do.

When he realized his underclassman was looking at him with such a scornful gaze, Souichirou returned an even fiercer glare back—but when Shiga flinched at that, Souichirou sneered at him instead.

In that sneer, there was self-deprecation, but in Shiga’s anger, he could only see it as being filled with arrogance.

“Stop it, stop it! Stop searching for Akamatsu-senpai’s fountain pen!”

Growing angrier at that, Shiga crossed over to where the two were still searching.

“Huh? Why?”

Sakamoto lifted his head up in confusion, but Fumiya continued to shove his head straight into the shrubbery without a single worry. With an outstretched arm, he pushed the branches aside.

“I-I found it!”

Leaves and twigs were sticking out of his scraggly hair and small cuts and grazes adorned his face, and yet, despite all that, his shout was one of pure happiness.

“I’m glad you found it!”

Sakamoto clapped his hands together in joy.

“T-Thank you… for s-searching for it… with me, Sakamoto-kun. I-I’m going to go give it to him!”

“I’m sure he’ll be happy you found it.”

After Fumiya had left, Shiga let out a sigh.

“He obviously dropped it on purpose. Why on earth was Kobori searching so hard for it?”

“Because Akamatsu-senpai told him to, probably.”

“He should get angry when people tell him to do such ridiculous things, whether it’s an upperclassman or the son of a noble. If he doesn’t, he’ll always be treated like a servant.”

As he watched Shiga clench his fists in anger derived from his sense of justice, Sakamoto laughed, asking why he was the one getting so angry.

“Kobori-kun isn’t the kind to get angry at anyone, and besides, he wanted to find it for him.”

Even though Sakamoto said as much, Shiga still couldn’t accept it.

“I was wrong about Akamatsu-senpai!” he spat out in disgust.

“I personally haven’t been treated badly by him… And thinking about it, Akamatsu-senpai isn’t really unkind to anyone except Kobori-kun. Did he do something to you?”

“He didn’t, but… But, why? Why is Akamatsu-senpai always like that to Kobori? It must be because he’s irritated by Kobori’s obedience.”

“It doesn’t look like he’s taking his anger out on him to me.”

“Then, why?”

With a slight smile, Sakamoto tilted his head to the side.

“I wonder.”

The next time Fumiya and Sakamoto met again that day was at dinner.

The grazes on Fumiya’s face that he had got while searching for the fountain pen were glistening like they had had oil rubbed on them.

“I see you went to the first aid room, then,” Sakamoto said. But Fumiya responded with a shake of his head.

“A-Akamatsu-senpai said that… this m-medicine worked wonders… on c-cuts and grazes. H-He… went and g-got it from Kanazawa-san who c-came from Toyama… for me. And then, h-he even put it on for me…”

“That was nice of him.”

Sakamoto couldn’t help but smile. He wasn’t particularly worried about Fumiya and Akamatsu, but he was happy that Fumiya could confirm for himself that his upperclassman really did care for and respect him.

Chapter 2.2

TL: sync
PR: Emy

Sakamoto had told him that if he didn’t want to go back to his home in Tokyo, he could spend the time at his instead, but he’d refused, saying he’d much rather study considering he’d just barely passed the maths exam.

In reality though, Fumiya just wanted to be alone.

Since Akamatsu-san’s probably gone home as well, I’ll just relax for now. I wonder what I can see from the third-floor window. Maybe I’ll play the shamisen for a bit, too.

On either side of the hilly road between the shopping district in front of the station and the side gate of the dorms, cherry blossoms were planted at regular intervals. That year’s cherry blossoms were still buds, but at the peak of the cherry blossom season, the sky would be colored a light pink; it made sense for the dorm to be called the Sakura Hill Dormitory.

It was when Fumiya was about to pass under the gate that he noticed it: the flowers of the cherry blossom just behind the gatepost were trying to bloom. No, two or three of them had already bloomed.

Fumiya loved flowers. Especially the cherry blossoms which added so much color to the spring.

Without thinking about it, Fumiya’s mouth turned up into a smile and he ran all the way up to the third floor of the dorm. Sure that his roommate wouldn’t be in their room, he vigorously threw the door open and bounded into his room.

“Ah.”

The minute Fumiya saw a boy sprawled out on the bed, he froze in place. Holding his breath, he quietly watched him. Even after a few seconds passed, his upperclassman thankfully remained asleep.

Fumiya breathed out in relief.

It was all well and good that he was asleep, but before he knew it, Fumiya could no longer move, eyes attached to his sleeping face.

…His hair is light brown. Ah, but there’s a bit of gold mixed in. It looks as smooth as silk…

The hair on top of the boy’s gently curving forehead was shining.

I think his eyes were a strange color, too…

Were they blue? Or gray?

As interested as Fumiya was in the odd appearance of this boy born from a European mother and a Japanese father, he knew that he shouldn’t stare. Besides, he was afraid that Akamatsu Souichirou’s existence was so bright that it would blind him. However, now that he was asleep…

The kimono that he seemed to like to wear always made his tall figure look majestic, but now that it was crumpled from how he was laying, Fumiya noticed that he had a surprisingly slim body. Since the position of his hips was high, the length of his hakama was amazingly long.

It wasn’t only the color of his hair and eyes that made him look different to a pure Japanese, the way his skin looked was a bit different, too. He didn’t have tanned skin, rather, it looked as white as fresh milk.

From his high forehead to the straight bridge of his nose… His features were all clearly defined. The eyelids closed firmly shut looked as if they were sunk in, and the eyelashes that bent backwards to meet his slightly elevated cheekbones were surprisingly long. As his lips, which were unexpectedly plump, moved as he mumbled in his sleep, Fumiya felt a surge of affection.

Fumiya couldn’t help but find himself wanting to try trailing his finger from the sharp tip of Souichirou’s nose, down and up along the bridge of his nose, up to his eyebrows. At that, the tips of his fingers twitched.

Moved by his curiosity, Fumiya was already sitting near the sleeping body before he even had the time to think.

As if Souichirou was aware of Fumiya’s wish to see that rare eye color properly just once, his eyes opened.

Forgetting to jump back, Fumiya just stared into those eyes.

Souichirou’s eyes were a beautiful hue—gray tinged with blue. They had a transparency to them that almost made them look like two glass balls, glittering with moisture.

When Fumiya saw an expression filled with curiosity that made him realize he was most likely making the same face, he nearly laughed at himself. Something began to distort his sight, and the strange way in which he widened his eyes was oddly amusing.

Noticing a hand suddenly reaching towards him, Fumiya pulled back.

“D-Don’t touch me…!”

Having come back to his senses, Fumiya immediately stood up.

“Even though you were sitting right beside me and looking at me while I was asleep, you think you have the right to tell me not to touch you?”

“…”

Akamatsu Souichirou got out of his bed and approached Fumiya as he backed away.

When Fumiya’s back hit the window and he could no longer go any further, they faced each other with only a person’s distance between them.

Unable to withstand the piercing gaze, Fumiya averted his eyes down to the floor.

“It’s not like I’m going to bite you or anything. Do you just not like me? I know there are a lot of people who are disgusted by how I look, but I’ve never seen someone so obviously trying to avoid looking at me… It kinda hurts.”

Fumiya frantically looked up.

N-No! That wasn’t my intention at all!

Somehow, he’d managed to look back up again, but it was like his lips were stiff and he could barely get his words out.

“I-I…”

“You… what?”

“…”

Being looked at with such intensity instilled such fear in Fumiya that he became as still as a rock. But even as his eyes began to fill with tears, the color of Souichirou’s eyes still looked beautiful.

“You want to say something to me, right?”

“…”

Sighing at Fumiya’s bleary eyes, Souichirou changed his tone.

“Sharing with an upperclassman must be frightening for you, huh? Not to mention you’re having to stay with someone like me…”

Fumiya frantically shook his head from side to side, and desperately wrung out words from his throat.

“W-When I s-saw you, th-the first… thing I thought was… that y-you were pretty. I-I mean to say, the color of your hair and… your f-features are.”

“You think I’m pretty?”

Souichirou’s mouth suddenly opened in surprise, but it quickly changed to a smile filled with cynicism.

Noticing his change in expression, Fumiya only became even more flustered. Maybe it was rude of me to use the word ‘pretty’ to describe a boy.

“P-Please forgive… me.”

Again unable to withstand the intensity of Souichirou’s gaze, Fumiya turned his head down and mumbled an explanation to his choice of words—as he didn’t exactly have one, he had to think fast.

“I-I thought that… y-you sort of looked… like the prince out of a p-picture book I read once… U-Um, I… I had it… when I was younger. It was a f-foreign book. Y-You look… a lot like the p-prince in one of the illustrations…”

“A prince, huh?” the son of the earl spat out.

“Anyway, the way you speak really gets on my nerves. Can you not just speak normally?”

“…”

Fumiya bit down hard on his lip.

“Well, whatever. But you know, if you’re going to talk to me while in front of me, you should at least look at me while you’re speaking. Do you not think so?”

“Ah… Y-Yes, sorry.”

The speed at which Fumiya raised his head made him feel slightly dizzy.

“Continue.”

Even while having no idea what he was saying, words flew out of his mouth.

“T-To help save the p… princess, the prince found the… courage he needed to f-fight… He rode a white horse, and ran through the forest…”

After rescuing the captured princess, the prince and princess fell in love at that moment, and after getting her parents’ blessings, the two of them married and they lived happily ever after.

“If that’s the case, become my retainer.”

It was an unexpected order.

Souichirou grinned at Fumiya’s widening eyes.

“There’s nothing wrong with me being a selfish prince, is there?”

“S-Such a prince… w-wouldn’t be… a prince. A p-prince is full of pride and is a bit r-reckle—“

“Will you become my retainer?”

Fumiya began imagining himself on a horse galloping after the prince on his own white one in the dark forest—not that he had any experience of horse-riding.

“W-Would you… be o-okay with… me?”

Souichirou wasn’t exactly happy about having his pleasant afternoon nap being disturbed by a cowardly boy he could barely understand.

However, he found the way that Fumiya was clumsily trying his hardest to speak, even while constantly stuttering, charming; he understood that the boy didn’t have the personality to be able to compliment another easily.

“Whether you are or not doesn’t matter…”

Suddenly, Souichirou burst into laughter.

“A retainer is supposed to do everything in his power to protect the prince, even if it means sacrificing his own life, but you don’t look strong in the least. You’d suit the role of the princess more than the retainer.”

“…B-But the princess is a… g-girl,”

Fumiya said, lips trembling as they twisted into a frown of self-deprecation.

“Do you not want to be the princess?”

“D-Despite how I may look, I-I’m a b-boy.”

When Souichirou narrowed his eyes quizzically, Fumiya deeply lowered his head as if trying to avoid his gaze.

Don’t tell me his looks are a sore spot for him? He’s got beautiful enough features that I’m pretty sure he could wrap so many people around his little finger if he really wanted to…

He couldn’t help but think about the way Fumiya always had his head turned down like he were a servant, or the way he always stammered so much that it was irritating.

Noticing a single light pink petal on the top of Fumiya’s head, Souichirou gently lifted it up between his fingers.

“…Kirschblüte.”

It was the German word for cherry blossoms.

“You had one on your head.”

Souichirou showed the petal nestled in the palm of his hand.

“…B-But… most of them s-still… aren’t in bloom…?”

“Then maybe this is snow.”

Souichirou closed his hand tight into a fist, and as if to emphasize that it was shut, he then wrapped his other hand around it.

When he opened it again, the petal was no longer in his palm—it was a simple magic trick, but having no knowledge of such tricks, Fumiya’s eyes blinked in amazement.

“I-It… disappeared.”

“It melted,” Souichirou lied.

Still bewildered by what he had just seen, a faint, fleeting smile showed itself on Fumiya’s face.

When he saw the smile on that pale face, Souichirou’s chest throbbed. It was close to a feeling of love, but it was slightly different to that felt for younger siblings.

Without any words being said to cause it, he suddenly felt irritation. Without warning, he turned away from Fumiya and returned back to his bed. Placing his elbows on the pillow, he closed his eyes.

“I’m going to rest for a bit more. I have difficulty falling asleep, so until I do, don’t move a single muscle. Just stand right there the exact same way you’re standing.”

“O-Okay.”

After Fumiya’s reply, the room fell into a somewhat unnatural silence, but if he focused his ears, Souichirou could hear Fumiya trying his hardest to make his breathing as shallow as possible.

As he counted those breaths, he could feel himself relaxing.

So I’m a selfish prince, huh?

His face broke into a smile.

Not that I’ve ever had a chance to be selfish.

Without ever becoming aware of the smile on his face, Souichirou was pulled into the world of dreams.

Chapter 38

The situation seemed to be very awkward. Wen Lin felt that he had listened to too many things that he didn’t want to hear, but at this moment there was no way he could leave. He could only look at Wen Jianing and wait for Wen Jianing’s response.

Wen Jianing heard what Yan Ruowei said, but he didn’t react at all.

Yan Ruowei was very emotional. He was panting, and his chest kept rising and falling.

“You are the only one who is naive,” Wen Jianing said suddenly, “Both Lu Jinlang and I. We both know what we are doing and what we want.”

Yan Ruowei looked at him with wide eyes, as if he didn’t understand.

Wen Jianing continued, “Why would you be so naive as to think that Lu Jinlang is sincere with you?”

Wen Lin couldn’t help calling him, “Xinhang?”

Wen Jianing shook his head at him, and then said to Yan Ruowei, “Lu Jinlang’s sincerity is too precious. We can’t afford it. Don’t think about it.”

Yan Ruowei raised his hand and wiped the wound on the corner of his mouth. He looked a little dumbfounded, and asked Wen Jianing, “Does it mean you are not sincere to him too?”

Wen Jianing said, “I don’t want to become what you are now.”

Yan Ruowei’s eyes were a little lost, and it wasn’t clear where his gaze was directed at.

Wen Jianing said to him again, “Take advantage of the noisiness outside, and when no one notices you, find a way to leave. If you were seen with Yuan Qian when this matter broke out, it’ll really be a big scandal in the entertainment industry.”

  Yan Ruowei didn’t say anything.

Wen Jianing then said to Wen Lin, “Let’s go.”

Wen Lin followed Wen Jianing out of the terrace and saw that it was still bustling below and no one was paying attention to this corner. He couldn’t help but ask Wen Jianing, “You really don’t like Lu Jinlang?”

As he went down the stairs, Wen Jianing said, “I like him, but so what if I do? There is still a long distance between like and love.”

Wen Lin said, “Does Lu Jinlang know?”

Wen Jianing said, “It doesn’t matter whether he knows it or not. These are not important to him.”

When Wen Jianing went back to the hall on the first floor, he still didn’t see Lu Jinlang. At this time, Bai Shengzhe asked them to go over. He and Wen Lin hurried over and went to mingle with Bai Shengzhe.

It was late at night after the celebration ended. Wen Jianing returned home in the company car and went upstairs alone.

He drank some wine, but he didn’t drink much, and his face was slightly flushed, but his mind was still sober. When he opened the door with the key, he was a little surprised for a moment, because he habitually locked the door every day, but today he was able to open it after turning a bit.

But he only thought he had forgotten to lock it when he went out in the morning.

When he opened the door and went into the house, he closed the door with one hand and turned on the light with the other hand. Suddenly someone held him from behind.

Wen Jianing was startled and immediately began to struggle.

The man had a heavy strength and held him tightly from behind. At this time, Wen Jianing stopped struggling because he was very familiar with the embrace. He then knew that the person behind him was Lu Jinlang.

After he was released, Wen Jianing lay on the sofa somewhat disconnected. Lu Jinlang reached out and carried him directly to the top of the small bed.

“Consider moving to my place,” Lu Jinlang said to him suddenly.

  ”Huh?”

Lu Jinlang lay down beside him and lazily reached out for a cigarette. He didn’t smoke very much because he was a very reserved person. He smokes occasionally but was not addicted. But there happened to be a cigarette on his body today, which was given to him at the dinner party. After he took the cigarette, Lu Jinlang turned around to look for the lighter. He searched for a long time but didn’t find it. In the end, Wen Jianing found one for him.

Wen Jianing lay down facing him and asked, “Why are you saying that all of a sudden?”

Lu Jinlang said, “I was followed by a paparazzi when I came here today. I asked Yunan to turn around a few times before getting rid of them. You are not safe here.”

Wen Jianing neighbourhood was an old one, and the access control downstairs was not strict. It was too easy for people outside to get in, but Lu Jinlang’s place was different. Unregistered cars and pedestrians were not allowed to enter Lu Jinlang’s villa area. The owner must personally inform the security guard for them to enter.

“But have you ever thought that if I move there, sooner or later the reporter will definitely find out about it,” Wen Jianing said.

Lu Jinlang bit his cigarette for a while, and said, “How about buying you a house next door? This way no one will be suspicious.”

Wen Jianing suddenly laughed, “Then they will definitely wonder if I’m being taken care of by someone.”

Lu Jinlang smiled when he heard the words, “Aren’t you?”

Wen Jianing understood what he meant, and didn’t answer immediately. He looked at him with his head in one hand.

Lu Jinlang stared at him at this time and asked, “So do you want it or not?”

  “What?”

Lu Jinlang said, “Live with me.”

Wen Jianing didn’t say anything for a long time, and finally said, “Okay.”

Lu Jinlang said to him, “Then I will arrange it.”

  Wen Jianing nodded.

Lu Jinlang slept at Wen Jianing’s place that night. The two people slowly woke up until the next day when the sky was completely bright.

The two men squeezed into a single bed. Of course, they couldn’t sleep well. Coupled with the strenuous exercise last night, Wen Jianing felt a little sore all over his body.

Lu Jinlang got up first, stretched out his hand to brush Wen Jianing’s hair, and walked toward the bathroom. Wen Jianing lay on the bed lazily and played with his mobile phone for a while.

When he came out of the shower, Lu Jinlang got dressed while preparing to call Lu Yunan.

Wen Jianing got up from the bed, and when he walked to the bathroom, he asked, “Are you going back?”

Lu Jinlang nodded. He didn’t like to go out very much. When on vacation, except for travelling, he spent most of his time at home growing flowers and cooking.

Wen Jianing said, “Don’t trouble Yunan, I’ll drive you.”

  Lu Jinlang did not refuse.

Wen Jianing went to take a shower and made a simple breakfast for Lu Jinlang after he came out. After the two of them had breakfast together, Wen Jianing went to wash the dishes and said, “Let’s go, I’ll take you back.”

Wen Jianing drove Lu Jinlang home. It was almost ten o’clock in the morning, and the street was already busy with people. Wen Jianing had nothing to do today. Before he returned home yesterday, Wen Tinghuan told him to take a two-days break and arrange it freely.

So he didn’t drive in a hurry and drove forward along with the traffic flow.

After passing by a small square in the downtown business district, Wen Jianing stopped temporarily because of a traffic jam. Wen Jianing noticed a giant poster of himself hung on the square.

Not of Ke Xinhang’s, but Wen Jianing’s.

The black-and-white posters fluttered gently with the wind, and some workers were setting up the stage. It looked like there was going to be an event tonight.

Wen Jianing was stunned and looked out of the car window. He was a little puzzled. He didn’t understand what kind of activity it was or why his poster was hung.

At this time, the car behind honked to urge him, because the car in front had already driven away.

He drove out slowly, but he couldn’t help turning his head to see the square.

Lu Jinlang didn’t say anything at first, but when he saw him like this, he reached out and took out his cell phone and made a call. A few moments later the call was connected, and he asked the person on the other side of the phone, “What’s going on over at Trend Plaza tonight?”

  ……

  “Check it out for me.”

Soon, the person on the phone seemed to reply to him. Lu Jinlang said “Um”, then hung up the phone and said to Wen Jianing, “There is a memorial event about Wen Jianing tonight. It was jointly organized by Wen Jianing’s agency and a clothing brand he endorsed before his death.”

Wen Jianing listened quietly, and he pursed his lips slightly.

Lu Jinlang noticed his small movements and asked, “Do you want to come and have a look?”

Wen Jianing did not answer. He didn’t even look at Lu Jinlang, and just drove silently.

Lu Jinlang propped his head with one hand, observing Wen Jianing’s expression.

That day, he drove Lu Jinlang home and left on the pretext of going back to the company. He didn’t actually intend to go to the company at all. When he returned, he passed the square again and saw that the light frame had been set up. In fact, this was a commercial activity in memory of him. However, he still wanted to come and have a look, not with Lu Jinlang, but by himself.

Wen Jianing did not dare to appear too early. Although he was not very popular, now he has a lot of fan attention. Appearing in public at random will cause trouble for himself.

He waited until dark and appeared near the square wearing a mask and cap. It was a little cold at night and the wind around there was very strong. It was not unexpected for him to wear this. But a tall and fashionable young man, even if his face was covered, it was still inevitable that people passing by would look at him more than twice.

Many people had gathered around the square, including men and women. At a glance, most of them were young girls. However, Wen Jianing had some fans who were already married and had children, but they still like him.

The large screen built in the middle was playing the film clips he had played. In the open space in front of the screen, white candles are placed in the shape of the “Wen Jianing” character, which were all lit by his fans to express their grief for him.

Wen Jianing thought of the sad and tearful young girls at his funeral. Apparently, they also sat here quietly and looked at Wen Jianing on the big screen. No one was crying, but everyone was just very quiet, with a sad look.

He sat down in a corner and looked at himself on the screen.

Suddenly, the film that was playing was stopped. The host of an event took the microphone and walked onto the stage and began to express his condolences to Wen Jianing. The background of the screen was also changed into an advertising poster of a clothing brand.

Wen Jianing didn’t feel angry. He turned to look at the fans next to him, and he felt a little bit sorrowful.

Next, the host announced tonight’s memorial activities. Many fans and friends from the Wen Jianing Fan Club prepared a program. They expressed their memory of Wen Jianing through singing and performance. Next, they invited two girls to sing.

They sang the TV theme song starring Wen Jianing during his lifetime.

Wen Jianing sat in the audience and listened quietly. Suddenly he got an idea. He stood up and looked for the president of the fan association in the crowd. He knew the girl.

After he found the president, Wen Jianing took off his mask behind the stage and said to her, “I’m a fan of Wen Jianing. I want to perform something for him on the stage, but I don’t know if I’m allowed to?”

The president’s eyes widened, “Are you Ke Xinhang?”

Wen Jianing nodded, “Yes it’s me, Ke Xinhang.”

The president seemed to be flattered. She nodded quickly, “Yes, of course, I’m happy that you like Jianing too, what do you want to perform?”

Wen Jianing said, “There is a movie called ‘Mirror Flower and Water Moon’*, remember?”

The president thought for a while and said, “Isn’t it pretty old?”

Wen Jianing said, “It is very old. At the end of that movie, Wen Jianing had a solo dance. I want to perform that song.”

It was an old movie, when Wen Jianing was not yet popular. In this small production movie, he played a somewhat mentally handicapped teenager. His sister learned ballet, and he always watched his sister dance at home, so he followed the dance. At the end of the movie, the slender boy puts on his sister’s ballet gown, turns on the CD player at home and plays an old piece of music casually, and dances to the music. Naturally, he did not dance ballet, but his body was soft and delicate. Even if he dances casually, his dancing talent could be seen.

The song that was played at the time was called ‘By the Suzhou River’.

Although the organizer did not prepare a video for ‘Mirror Flower and Water Moon’, after hearing that Ke Xinhang was going to perform on stage, he immediately asked someone to go online to find the last footage of the film, and also found the accompaniment tape of ‘By the Suzhou River’.

Wen Jianing’s performance was arranged at the end of the event.

When he came on stage, the scene was quiet for a while. Someone did not recognize him, but more people immediately shouted in surprise, “Ke Xinhang?”

They thought he was a guest performer invited by the organizer.

However, Wen Jianing, who picked up the microphone, said, “I am a fan of Wen Jianing. Today I brought this song ‘By the Suzhou River’ from the movie ‘Mirror Flower and Water Moon’, just to mourn with everyone and to thank everyone here who supports him.”

As the movie began to play on the big screen, the melodious music of ‘By the Suzhou River’ also started to play.

The Wen Jianing on the screen was not even 20 years old at that time. Although the role he played in the movie was very important, the movie itself was just a small-cost movie and did not get much response.

At that time, Wen Jianing was still relatively thin, with an appearance between a teenager and a young man.

“The night left a lonely river without a person in sight……” Wen Jianing performed the song with the neutral and delicate voice of Ke Xinhang. He could not remember the dance steps at that time, but he still remembered what the director said to him at that time ” You can dance as you like”. The child who had not learned to dance, by nature, interpreted the emotion of the song as he understood it.

While he sang, he walked the dance steps at will, which was almost the same as that on the big screen behind him. He was very restrained and even shy. He matched his soft voice just right as if Wen Jianing on the screen had come back to life again.

A car parked in the distance of the square. Lu Yunan looked at Wen Jianing’s performance on the stage and couldn’t help turning his head and whispered, “Mr. Lu?”

Lu Jinlang was also looking at Wen Jianing, and he just uttered a single syllable “Huh?”.

Lu Yunan said, “Xinhang seemed to have been preparing the dance for a long time.”

Lu Jinlang let out an “um”.

Lu Yunan said, “He probably really likes Mr. Wen.”

“Yunan,” Lu Jinlang said suddenly, “Are you familiar with Wen Jianing?”

Lu Yunan was stunned and hurriedly said, “Of course not.”

Lu Jinlang said, “I’m not familiar with him either, but I’ve always felt that Wen Jianing was competing with me.”

Lu Yunan recalled it carefully, and said, “When you put it that way, it does seem like so.”

Lu Jinlang propped his head with one hand, “Ke Xinhang likes Wen Jianing so much, do you think he approached me for some other purpose?”

“What purpose?” Lu Yunan was puzzled.

Lu Jinlang said, “For example, to kill me and give Wen Jianing a companion or something.”

Lu Yunan was instantly shocked, “Mr. Lu, don’t make such a joke!” He turned his head to look at Lu Jinlang but saw that Lu Jinlang’s expression did not seem to care, and that statement was indeed just a joke.

Wen Jianing’s performance has come to an end.

Lu Yunan asked Lu Jinlang, “Should I pick him up and go back together?”

Lu Jinlang said, “Forget it, he came secretly. I will pretend I don’t know about it, so let’s go back.”

“Okay,” Lu Yunan started the car and drove forward.

*The movie is actually called, 镜花水月 which means flowers in a mirror and the moon reflected in the lake

Chapter 37

When Wen Lin left, Wen Jianing and Lu Jinlang didn’t say anything more. One went to the bathroom and one went back to the award hall.

When Wen Lin saw Wen Jianing return, he obviously hadn’t recovered from the shock and stared at Wen Jianing with wide eyes.

Wen Jianing patted him on the shoulder.

Wen Lin couldn’t hold back, and approached Wen Jianing and asked in a low voice, “Aren’t you angry when he talks about you like that?” In Wen Lin’s view, Lu Jinlang’s movements and words were too frivolous, and even a bit insulting.

Wen Jianing smiled and said to him, “It’s nothing, just a joke.”

The award ceremony was still going on, but it had nothing to do with them. This time, Wen Jianing felt that he had become a real audience and would not have that kind of excited anticipation.

In the middle of the ceremony, the guest performers invited by the organizing committee came to the stage and sang two songs. It was from a very popular and powerful group recently. The sound was loud and the songs were passionate, which set off a small climax in the award ceremony.

Generally speaking, there was nothing too unexpected about this year’s Academy Awards. Before the award ceremony, many media made predictions one after another, and the final result was almost the same as the general direction of the prediction.

The best actor goes to a veteran actor who has acted in movies for many years but had not won the little golden man. The best actress was a young actress who was only twenty-six this year, young and beautiful, with unlimited possibilities.

By this time, the awards ceremony, which lasted for nearly three hours, was reaching the end.

At this time, the host came on stage and announced that there was a special achievement award to be presented to a special guest tonight, and invited Lu Jinlang and Zhan Yi, who were the guests of honour, to come on stage to present the award.

Zhan Yi was the female lead of ‘Duel’. She played Wen Jianing’s girlfriend who was pregnant and killed by Yu Fenglin, played by Lu Jinlang in the movie. Although she was the female lead, this movie was actually a man’s drama, and Zhan Yi’s role was not critical.

When he saw the two of them on stage, Wen Jianing suddenly understood for whom this special achievement award was prepared.

Sure enough, Lu Jinlang and Zhan Yi announced that the winner of the Special Achievement Award was Wen Jianing, and then the host invited Wen Jianing’s mother, Wen Cuilan to the stage to receive the award.

Wen Cuilan burst into tears uncontrollably and thanked the Organizing Committee and all his friends and fans on behalf of Wen Jianing.

At this time, the whole audience stood up and applauded, and so the host announced that the Academy Award ceremony was officially over.

Wen Jianing followed and stood up to applaud, but all his thoughts were on Wen Cuilan, who was crying on the awards platform above.

The time just after the ceremony was the most chaotic, the award-winning stars had to go to the reception hall outside to be interviewed by reporters, while some others were either going to the celebration banquet after the award ceremony or going back by car. All the people in the whole venue were vacating the hall.

Wen Jianing walked outside in a hurry, and Yi Nan grabbed his arm and missed, asking, “Where are you rushing to?”

He shook his head and didn’t answer. He just wanted to see Wen Cuilan.

When he saw Wen Cuilan so sad, Wen Jianing suddenly wondered whether his thoughts were wrong. Even with a new husband, the existence of a son should be irreplaceable for a woman. Since he was still alive, he should let his mother know, at least to make her less sad.

Wen Cuilan would not attend the press conference, nor she would go to the celebration banquet. She was going to go straight to the special passage, and then leave by car.

Wen Jianing knew where the passage was, so he hurried to that direction.

The corridor seemed a bit crowded at this time. He was the only one who moved hastily, causing many people next to him to look at him.

When he saw Wen Cuilan, Wen Cuilan was already standing at the exit of the passage. A car stopped in front of her, waiting for her to get in.

It was her foreigner husband who drove, and there was a white girl in the back seat, the daughter of her husband and ex-wife.

Wen Cuilan got into the car. The girl hugged the back of the chair and leaned her head to talk to her. Her husband hugged her for comfort, and Wen Cuilan finally showed a smile on her face.

Wen Jianing just stood there and didn’t go over until the car drove away. Now he felt he shouldn’t mess around so much, at least not at this time.

Many people came from behind him, waiting for vehicles to leave at the exit of the passage.

Wen Jianing stood in the same place for a long time, and he took out his mobile phone and found several missed calls on the phone that had been muted before the opening, from Wen Lin and Wen Tinghuan.

He called Wen Tinghuan back, and she hurriedly asked him where he was.

Wen Jianing said the place, and soon the car drove over to pick him up.

As she saw Wen Jianing getting in the car, Wen Tinghuan asked, “What the hell are you doing?”

  Wen Jianing shook his head.

Seeing his somewhat disoriented appearance, Wen Tinghuan turned her head and asked Wen Lin and Yi Nan, “What happened to him?”

Wen Lin and Yi Nan were both at a loss.

However, Wen Lin remembered what happened to Wen Jianing and Lu Jinlang outside the bathroom at that time. He gave a soft “Ah” and thought that there was something wrong between Wen Jianing and Lu Jinlang, but when he saw Wen Tinghuan looking at him, he closed his mouth and shook his head.

Wen Tinghuan didn’t ask any more questions, and said, “Manager Bai has already gone to the dinner party. We’ll go there now.”

When she saw Wen Jianing still dispirited, Wen Tinghuan patted him on the shoulder, “Xinhang, don’t forget what you said to Zheng laoshi, cheer up!”

  Wen Jianing nodded.

The address of the celebration banquet of the Academy Award ceremony was in the banquet hall of a five-star hotel very close to the award hall.

After Bai Shengzhe arrived first. He waited for them to come before entering together with them.

Wen Jianing saw Lu Jinlang as soon as he entered the lobby. He was standing with Zhan Yi to talk. Neither of them won any prizes this year, nor did they need to attend the press conference. They came here early as soon as the awards ceremony ended.

There were so many astounding stars here like it was at the awards ceremony. Of course, in addition to the stars, there were many other well-known filmmakers and a large number of big bosses in the entertainment industry.

The atmosphere was warm and peaceful, with people talking and laughing everywhere. It seemed that the entertainment circle was actually a small circle, where everyone knows each other and knows them well.

Lu Jinlang had been surrounded by people to talk and clink glasses. He was calm and polite, and he always listened to others carefully.  He only took the time to look at Wen Jianing but did not come over.

After Bai Shengzhe walked away from them, Wen Lin seemed a little uncomfortable, and Yi Nan didn’t seem to like these parties. He went to the table, took a glass of red wine and drank it alone.

Bai Shengzhe beckoned Yi Nan to come over.

And so only Wen Lin and Wen Jianing were left.

Wen Lin looked around and said, “Is there a place to get some air?”

Wen Jianing pointed to the stairs. There was a big terrace between the first floor and the second floor.

Wen Lin walked in that direction upon hearing this.

Wen Jianing wanted to tell him not to hurry to hide, but he didn’t stop Wen Lin. Because Wen Lin was already impatiently heading towards the terrace.

He was feeling a little helpless, but there was no way to stop Wen Lin. Wen Jianing glanced around and saw Fang Wei who was talking to Li Jiazhen. He picked up a glass of red wine and walked in Fang Wei’s direction.

Fang Wei obviously still remembered Wen Jianing. When he saw him, he smiled and greeted him, “Xinhang.”

“Director Fang,” Wen Jianing respectfully toasted Fang Wei.

Wen Jianing asked Fang Wei about the progress of ‘October Fireworks’. Fang Wei was obviously in a good mood when talking about the movie, and he pulled Li Jiazhen to talk with Wen Jianing in detail. Soon, there were a few more people around them. Naturally, they all came for Fang Wei.

Fang Wei suddenly grabbed a short and plumpy middle-aged man and said, “Old Cao, didn’t you ask me to recommend someone to you? Come on, this is Ke Xinhang. I think he meets your requirements. Think about it.”

The full name of the middle-aged man that Fang Wei called ‘Old Cao’ was Cao Songquan. He was a director who has filmed many comedies. He was an old partner with a producer in the circle, making a comedy film every two years, which was a blockbuster filled with so many stars.

Cao Songquan looked at Wen Jianing, but asked Fang Wei, “You recommend him?”

Fang Wei nodded, “I recommend him.”

Cao Songquan said, “Okay, if you recommend it, it’s fine, I’ll take it!”

Although Cao Songquan said so, it sounded more like a casual joke between friends to Wen Jianing, so he didn’t take it too seriously. He just respectfully toasted Cao Songquan a glass of wine, and then left silently when he saw that Fang Wei was engaging in small talks with others.

The whole banquet hall was getting more and more people, since the award-winning actors rushed to the celebration banquet after being interviewed, and became the main spotlight of the banquet. Especially when the new Film Emperor and Queen came to the banquet hall, people’s attention was drawn to them.

Wen Jianing turned to look for Lu Jinlang but found that he couldn’t find him, and he didn’t know if he went to the bathroom.

After standing in place for a while, Wen Jianing planned to find Wen Lin, because until now, Wen Lin was still hiding on the terrace above and refused to come back. He also considered tonight’s trip to be in vain.

Wen Jianing walked along the stairs towards the terrace, and when he got closer, he found that the two doors that were originally open were actually slightly closed at the moment. He thought that Wen Lin was inside, so he glanced into the crack of the door and saw Yuan Qian and Yan Ruowei standing on the terrace talking face to face.

Slightly surprised, Wen Jianing simultaneously heard Yuan Qian’s angry curses, “Shameless!”

Yan Ruowei turned his head and said, “Miss Yuan, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Yuan Qian repeatedly vented her anger, and she said, “I said you’re shameless! Being a man yet you are giving in to another man!”

Yan Ruowei said, “I think you might have misunderstood something…”

Slap!’ Before he finished his words, Yuan Qian slapped him in the face. She was obviously slapping so hard that Yan Ruowei’s head even tilted.

Yuan Qian said bitterly, “Are you crazy about being popular? What do you want from Li Rong? You think I don’t know? Li Rong is just playing with you! Don’t be so delusional!”

Yan Ruowei looked at Yuan Qian, suppressed his anger and did not do anything to her. He said, “I said you misunderstood!”

Yuan Qian didn’t believe him at all, she suddenly reached out and grabbed Yan Ruowei’s clothes, constantly cursing words like “shameless” and “disgusting”.

Yan Ruowei was obviously very patient, and grabbed Yuan Qian’s hand to let her let her go, but it was not possible to say whether it would strike Yuan Qian’s hands.

When he saw this, Wen Jianing turned back and looked down the stairs and found Li Rong in the crowd.

Li Rong leaned back against the wall and drank wine casually. He was a little absent-minded when several young actresses next to him were talking to him.

Wen Jianing hurriedly went downstairs, walked quickly in the direction of Li Rong, grabbed Li Rong’s wrist and said, “Come with me.”

Li Rong was a little baffled.

Wen Jianing could no longer care about the strange look of the people next to him. While pulling Li Rong out of the crowd, he whispered to him, “Your girlfriend is dealing with Yan Ruowei, I’m afraid they’re making a big noise.”

Li Rong immediately frowned and followed Wen Jianing quickly up the stairs. He rushed to open the door of the terrace and saw Yuan Qian already grabbing Yan Ruowei’s face and hair.

Yan Ruowei’s face was scratched, but he still restrained himself and didn’t hit Yuan Qian.

Li Rong stepped forward and hugged Yuan Qian to drag her away from Yan Ruowei. Wen Jianing followed behind and closed the door back.

Yuan Qian was still so hysterical that he turned around and slapped Li Rong in the face.

After doing that, she herself was stunned. She took a deep breath and said nothing.

With a cold face, Li Rong asked, “Have you had enough?”

Yan Ruowei looked at Li Rong, raised his hand to touch the wound on his face, and then looked at Wen Jianing behind Li Rong.

Wen Jianing saw that the atmosphere was a little tense, he wanted to persuade Li Rong to take Yuan Qian away first, but before he had a chance to speak, he heard Li Rong yell, “Who is that? Get out!”

  Several people were taken aback.

Then Wen Jianing saw Wen Lin cautiously come out from behind a big vase. He didn’t mean to hear it on purpose. He also felt very flustered.

He just heard someone coming. In order to avoid talking with others, he wanted to hide behind the vase. However, he didn’t expect Yuan Qian and Yan Ruowei to quarrel as soon as they came inside. When he heard the content of the quarrel, there was no way to go out even more.

Li Rong didn’t know Wen Lin, so he looked at him coldly.

Wen Jianing quickly said to Li Rong, “He is my friend. He won’t talk nonsense.”

Li Rong turned to Wen Jianing and said, “Thank you, I will take her away first.” After saying that, he dragged Yuan Qian away by the wrist.

Wen Jianing, Wen Lin and Yan Ruowei were left in the room.

Wen Jianing looked at Wen Lin and raised his jaw to signal him to leave.

However, Yan Ruowei suddenly said, “Do you think Lu Jinlang loves you?”

Wen Lin suddenly stopped, and Wen Jianing also looked at Yan Ruowei.

Yan Ruowei still had bloodstains on his face and the corners of his mouth were swollen. He looks a little miserable. He then said, “Don’t be naive, that’s just an illusion, Lu Jinlang loves no one but himself.”
