Chapter 17

Although Suo Yang didn’t want to admit it, Shen Huiming was right.

Why did he feel like he was unable to position the other party? If he really didn’t feel anything at all, he could have refused politely and without hesitation, just like he did in the past.

Just like when Shen Huiming asked him for contact information for the first time.

But now, he was somewhat a little greedy for Shen Huiming.

Suo Yang smiled, and in order to hide his unease at being seen through, he deliberately bit into his plastic spoon and said “Is Mr Shen that confident?”

“Actually, I’m faking it,” Shen Huiming also smiled, “because I don’t think you like people who are not confident.”

Both men looked at each other with somewhat meaningful eyes, and their smiles each had hidden charms, hiding their heart.

“That’s right,” Suo Yang said, “I like confident people.”

Shen Huiming smiled brightly and was in a brighter mood too. Yesterday’s little trick was not in vain and neither was this frozen yoghurt today.

After the two of them finished eating, no one mentioned what they wanted to leave, and they walked slowly and leisurely down the empty corridor of the mall.

Neither of them was someone who liked to go shopping, and neither of them has the time to do so. Usually, Suo Yang’s rest time was used to catch up on his sleep, while Shen Huiming basically didn’t have any time to rest.

Such two people were actually willing to spend their precious time in this way at this moment, and Suo Yang felt that he had really changed.

“Suo Yang, let’s make a bet.”

“Huh?” Suo Yang looked at Shen Huiming, “What kind of bet?”

“If we run into each other on the plane again, just accept one of my invitations to date.”

Suo Yang laughed, “It doesn’t look like you want to go on a date with me too much.”

The odds of that were too low.

“I definitely want to, but I think the odds are that if I ask you out normally, you’ll turn me down.” Shen Huiming walked beside Suo Yang with a smile on his face, “Of course, you can deny my speculation, then I will immediately I’ll invite you to watch a movie together another day.”

Suo Yang smiled helplessly, “What to do? I’m a bit nervous about spending time with you now.”

He wasn’t joking as he realised that this man, Shen Huiming was almost looking right through him.

It created a very complex feeling for your next move to be guessed by someone accurately. There was a sense of joy in finding a very close friend and a sense of crisis in showing a flaw in front of the enemy.

He thought that Shen Huiming was very smart, and he dismantled him in a euphemistic and soft way that he could not hate.

For Suo Yang, this kind of person was still terrifying, and he had no chance of winning this game.

When he had no chance of winning, it was time to change his tactics.

       “Nervous?”

“Yes, I seem to be being led by your nose.”

Shen Huiming understood what he meant, and deliberately distanced himself slightly from Suo Yang.

How else could one say that Shen Huiming was a smart person? He could hear the other party’s underlying meaning from just Suo Yang’s one sentence.

Shen Huiming was a little eager to accomplish what he wanted, and Suo Yang was hinting to him that he still had to keep his distance for the time being.

Not just physical distance, but also psychological.

Shen Huiming said, “Then how about this, I’ll wait for you to ask me out.”

Suo Yang looked at him and then heard him say, “I’m too presumptuous sometimes, and I can’t control my sense of proportion. I’ll give you the remote control, and the receiver is with me. You can control it how you want.”

Suo Yang smiled: “Don’t, that’s not the relationship between us.”

Shen Huiming looked at him and waited for him to continue.

“Actually, you don’t need to be so careful with me, this makes me a bit stressed instead.” Suo Yang said, “I’m looking forward to seeing the real you.”

Indeed, the two met each other four times, and each time it was as if they were playing chess, with the two of them sparring on the art of war. Although they knew the starting point was good, they always felt insincere.

Suo Yang didn’t deny his affection for Shen Huiming, but it was enough up to that point. What he wanted to see next was not how smart Shen Huiming was, but how sincere the other party was.

He himself was actually the same.

Everyone was an opportunist and shrewd adult, and it took courage to express sincerity. This society is full of hot faces and cold asses1to show warm feelings but meet with cold rebuke, which made people reluctant to give their sincerity easily.

“I’m really wavering,” Suo Yang continued walking forward, “it’s like when we have to choose one of the two but don’t know which one to choose, and the moment we flip a coin we already have the answer in our minds. I’ve flipped the coin in my mind.”

Suo Yang’s words were totally unexpected, Shen Huiming didn’t expect the other party to be willing to talk to him openly about this so soon.

“I’ve been deceiving myself for many years, and I chose not to listen to or look at anything that I found troublesome,” Suo Yang smiled, “The same is true for relationship issues, I think it’s troublesome to fall in love.”

Shen Huiming smiled: “I used to think so too.”

The two looked at each other, both smiled helplessly.

“Life is very stressful and time is packed. I always feel that I don’t have the leisure to fall in love. Of course, a large part of the reason is that I don’t think I will meet someone who makes me willing to continue to compress my time to be with them.”

       Shen Huiming listened and nodded.

Suo Yang’s line of thoughts was not that unique. In this large but crowded city, people with such a mentality probably made up the majority.

“The day I met you for the first time, a colleague of mine asked me why I didn’t fall in love. I didn’t know the answer at the time. I could only say it’s just that the time has not come.” Suo Yang looked at the balloons floating in front of him and said softly, “But fate is too mysterious. Whether it exists or not, who knows?”

Shen Huiming had always been a person who didn’t believe in the so-called ‘fate’ and ‘destiny’, but his recent experience made him realise that maybe fate did exist, and maybe the matchmaker god, Yue lao2is one of the gods of Taoism, in charge of men and women of marriage gods had already tied red threads to everyone’s wrists.

“I’m still not sure if fate exists, but it is undeniable that the three consecutive encounters with you have made me care about you.” Suo Yang chuckled, “It’s quite embarrassing to say that suddenly. “

“Mr Shen, I’m saying this because I hope you know I’m trying to show you my sincerity,” Suo Yang said, “I just made a request to you, saying that I would like to see a more real you. As the call, so the echo; I can’t just let you show your real side and still do nothing.”

Suo Yang’s words surprised Shen Hui Ming to the extent that he couldn’t find the right way to respond for a while. The other side stood still, looking at him with a pale face and smiling.

“Well, as you said, if we meet on the plane again, I’ll go on a date with you.” Suo Yang said, “You can decide what kind of date it is, as long as it doesn’t interfere with work, I’ll accept it anytime, anywhere, and in any way.”

He looked at Shen Huiming and said with a smile, “But if not, then we are not meant to be. Mr Shen, do you still want to play this bet?”

Shen Huiming stopped with him, and the two looked at each other as if facing each other.

Shen Huiming smiled: “Bet. Of course, I have to bet, and I promise not to do any little tricks behind my back.”

After all, he also wanted to know if anyone was fiddling with their fate at 30,000 feet.

Chapter 16

One of the reasons Suo Yang felt comfortable with Shen Huiming was that he was good at revealing his mind at the right time and expressing his sincerity at the right time.

It could be extremely uncomfortable to get along with someone who was all about so-called generic conversation topics, but it could also be annoying to be an adult who didn’t know how to be discreet or when to stop.

Shen Huiming had a good grasp of when to advance and when to step back so Suo Yang was always in the middle of two situations when he was with him—he was in control of Shen Huiming as Shen Huiming was in control of him.

It was like the two of them were dancing the tango, crossing their steps, moving in and out, never looking each other in the eye, knowing everything, but testing each other.

       It was somewhat amusing.

“I want to know too,” Suo Yang said. “I’ve been waiting for that person too.”

Shen Huiming looked at him, and was unexpectedly satisfied with Suo Yang’s answer, because at least this sentence was not for show, and it was rare to hear Suo Yang’s sincerity from it.

“Everyone is waiting.” Shen Huiming said, “When I was a teenager, I was thinking about what kind of person I will fall in love with and what kind of person I will be with in the future. I listed a lot of criteria and reasons for loving someone. However, the more I grew up, the more I realized that love has no criteria or reasons.”

Suo Yang listened to his words and nodded gently to show his agreement.

“I chatted with Tongyan that day and talked about this.” Shen Huiming felt that he was not very kind and sincere. At this time he caught Jiang Tongyan and let him appear to whip him. “He said you met all his expectations for a lover.”

       Suo Yang laughed, “Really?”

“Of course, it’s also possible that he modified his standard after meeting you.”

Suo Yang laughed softly when he said that, and he was in a good mood, not as uncomfortable as before.

Shen Huiming liked to see Suo Yang laugh like this, there was a kind of heartwarming feeling that made people pity him.

“By the way,” Suo Yang suddenly turned around and asked Shen Huiming, “How is Mr Jiang? I didn’t have time to say goodbye to him yesterday.”

He mentioned Jiang Tongyan on purpose, just like Shen Huiming mentioned the other side on purpose.

“He should be fine,” Shen Huiming said. “I guess.”

He didn’t tell Suo Yang that the person might be having a good time in the hotel at the moment, so he had the possibility to gossip about his rival behind his back. If Jiang Tongyan had already been in a process of getting together with someone else yet still came to flirt with Suo Yang, he would definitely stop him. However, he would have only dealt with Jiang Tongyan to his face, and would never have done something like “telling on” Suo Yang behind his back.

“The… curse he said yesterday, is it true?”

Shen Huiming didn’t expect Suo Yang to remember this, and he didn’t expect the other party to ask about it.

How to answer this question was a matter of knowledge.

“It was indeed true before I met you,” Shen Huiming said. “Tongyan and I were classmates for four years. Apart from the two of us, there are four other parties who can testify to this.”

Suo Yang asked knowingly, “So why do you say before me?”

“After I met you, I lost confidence in myself.” Shen Huiming was very frank this time, “It’s strange to say, I’m not the kind of person who has low self-esteem. Of course, I don’t feel inferior when I get along with you. I just feel uncertain.”

Suo Yang’s smile faded, but there was still a vague smile in his eyes. He wanted to see what Shen Huiming would say.

“Have you ever been in that situation? It was a situation where you’ve always won everything, but then suddenly one day you meet someone and everything becomes full of uncertainty.”

“Do you feel uncomfortable because of this feeling?”

“No.” Shen Huiming smiled at him, “On the contrary, I enjoyed it.”

He took a bite of frozen yoghurt, savouring the taste Suo Yang liked.

“You know, life is boring. I should thank you for adding something unusual to my boring life.”

Suo Yang’s hand that was holding the spoon was slightly sweaty.

He found himself and Shen Huiming had two very different attitudes on such matters.

“You don’t seem to be the kind of person with a life full of noises and excitement.” Shen Huiming said, “Although it’s rude to speculate on your life without permission, I do want to have a good chat with you.”

       Suo Yang looked at him.

“Let’s talk about us, not about cufflinks, not Jiang Tongyan, not millet congee or frozen yoghurt.” Shen Huiming said sincerely, “I know we should take our time, and the aggressive approach will only make you turn around and walk away. But can you give me something sweet first, so I know what kind of position I have in your heart after these few meetings?”

Shen Huiming’s words made Suo Yang silent for a long time. During this silence, he kept thinking about the meaning behind these words.

He understood that this was a multiple-choice question given to him by Shen Huiming.

Adults, especially people like them, had to weigh the pros and cons of everything they did.

       Including how they felt.

With their short lives and limited energy, people endure things far more than others could imagine.

The older they got, the more afraid they were to enter into a relationship because something like falling in love takes time and energy. When one were in love, one must give a part of yourself to the other party, and one must break the deep-rooted life, or the rhythm would be completely disrupted.

The adult romance was a very thorough adventure, since they were very realistic people, and everyone would think twice before embarking on this adventure.

The impulses of youth would be there, but eventually, they would be overwhelmed by reason.

They were mundane and profane. However, that was who they are, which was an undeniable truth.

Suo Yang appreciates Shen Huiming’s honesty because they really didn’t need to beat around the bush.

If one had a good feeling and felt that they could try to connect, then go ahead and try to become intimate.

But if the death sentence had been given at this moment, there was no need to dwell on others, everyone was very busy.

Suo Yang was considering how to answer, while Shen Huiming waited quietly for his sentence to be announced.

This was actually a gamble that Shen Huiming had made. It was all up to Suo Yang whether he lost or won.

A full five minutes had passed. Shen Huiming’s confidence was being depleted, and he was even ready to extinguish his thoughts about Suo Yang from now on. After all, he had explicitly hinted at the other party several times but still remained unmoved. So if he continued to pester them, it would only add to their troubles.

They all need to be decent in this sort of thing.

Suo Yang was actually in a bit of a dilemma, he rarely encountered such a tangled situation. Shen Huiming had given him a difficult problem.

“Mr Shen,” Suo Yang said, turning to Shen Huiming, who was uneasy, “what if I say I don’t know how I should position you?”

Shen Huiming breathed a sigh of relief at his answer, then laughed.

“Since you said that, then I understand what to do next.” Shen Huiming looked at him with a smile, “Do you know why you feel unable to position me? Because you have been shaken.”

Chapter 6

Since my return, many changes had taken place in my mind.

Beginning with panic, discomfort, and struggle, to feeling unwilling and trying very hard in between… to finally resigned to fate and be at peace.

I really, really did try very hard and so much.

I tried to become mature and stable, and I also started to bring home all sorts of maintenance and health products when I see my parents and learned to help them share some of the chores and miscellaneous tasks of life. But perhaps I had it too easy for the first half of my life and I still did so badly that my parents finally sighed and took over the work under me with a smile.

“Forget it, just go just go and rest if you don’t want to.” they said.

I embarrassedly said, “No, II really don’t know how to…” wash and scale fish, but they didn’t seem to believe it and kicked me out of the kitchen.

Actually, I can learn, practice makes perfect, you know?

But the previous Ze’an was so good at it that my earnest learning process was considered perfunctory.

       Ugh.

I also learned to give various suggestions to Fu Shan, who came to consult me about relationship issues.

But still, I personally was someone with one track of mind. When I saw Fu Shan complaining about her boyfriend, I listened to her from her point of view as before, and said angrily, “Just break up, the next one would be much better.”

Instead, Fu Shan was stunned, and asked me hesitantly, “Should we really break up? … Ze’an, look at it objectively, he is actually quite good sometimes…”

I regret that I couldn’t live up to the expectation, “Didn’t you say that he doesn’t reply to you very much?”

Fu Shan said, “Yes, but Song Ge used to be like this too. He is a person who doesn’t talk much online. Mostly in other places…”

She hesitated for a while, then sighed.

“Forget it, I’ll think about it myself. Ze’an, you should go to bed earlier too.”

I seemed to hear this sigh often.

From my parents, from my friends, and from everyone around me.

I started to question my own existence and hated myself for not being able to do anything well. I started to understand the sympathetic gaze of the grim reaper at that time; I shouldn’t really have come back, should I? I was really self-indulgent and thought of myself as someone special.

Obviously, what everyone needed was the other Ze’an.

But apart from Ji Qin, who I spent a lot of time with, no one seemed to realize that I was no longer the Ze’an I used to be.

I also tried to be close to Ji Qin

Because of the fake Ze’an’s absence, he actually lived a very depressing life, but he did not accept my comfort. As I’ve said before, he didn’t want to see me and even dreaded seeing me.

       Hey, I actually, could understand.

But still, I was very sad and didn’t know who to talk to.

When Ji Qin came back one day, he was drunk. He didn’t find the key at the door, so he naturally called me and gently called on the phone, Ze’an Ze’an, open the door quickly.

I was flattered. In fact that he hadn’t called me a single time before that.

I rushed to the entrance to open the door for him two steps at a time. Ji Qin, with drunken eyes, leaned on the door sill and said to me with a smile, “Ze’an, I knew you would come back.”

I pursed my lips, not daring to look at him directly, and with great difficulty picked up his heavy body, and prepared to take him to his room.

He was still whispering, “I knew it, Ze’an, I’ve been waiting for you…”

I really wish I was deaf at this point.

When I finally put him on the bed, he was suddenly very uncooperative. He wouldn’t let me touch him and resisted my attempts to take off his jacket.

       “Zean, are you leaving?”

“You want me to go to bed early and then leave, right?”

I was helpless. It was the first time I saw such a childish Ji Qin, but I was also very sad because no matter what Ji Qin appeared to be, it was not for me.

       “Ze’an, are you going…”

In the end, Ji Qin seemed tired and took my hand and said softly, his tone seemed to be pleading.

       My heart ached with it.

I sat beside him and slowly leaned over and hugged him, he seemed to be stunned for a second, then wrapped his arms around me more tightly the next second.

I soothed him and said, “I’m not leaving.”

He loved listening to this sentence, and his body relaxed a little, and his grip on my hand was not so hard anymore.

So I continued, “I’m not leaving.”

I kept repeating these words until I was a little numb myself. Until I felt that he was completely at ease.

He suddenly turned his head and put his lips on mine.

I was startled, the kiss was very light and nimble, and before I could react, the warmth on my lips had disappeared.

Ji Qin narrowed his eyes in confusion, “Ze’an, why are you crying?”
