Chapter 57: Memories
When Su Muluo arrived at the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings , several people were already gathered there, including both monster and human cultivators. However, aside from Fan Huai, Zheng Hechun, and Liu He, there were many unfamiliar faces.
“Mr. Su,” Fan Huai, noticing the absence of Long Ling, asked instinctively, “May I inquire about Lord Long Ling—”
Su Muluo replied, “Sorry, he won’t be coming.”
Fan Huai was slightly surprised. He thought perhaps there was a disagreement between Su Muluo and Long Ling. Hesitantly, he said, “But this journey is dangerous. The Golden Dragon may not be easy to handle.”
“I know,” Su Muluo said, “Don’t worry, I’ll be enough on my own.”
His tone was calm but carried a sense of determination. Fan Huai met his gaze, paused for a few seconds, and nodded, “Alright, then we’ll rely on you, Mr. Su—let’s set off.”
The group then set out. On the way, Zheng Hechun quietly approached Fan Huai and whispered, “Old Fan, since Mr. Su is not a true dragon, will it be stable with just him and us?”
Fan Huai shook his head and also lowered his voice, “Lord Long Ling’s absence might have its reasons. Besides, do you remember the feather you received from us?”
Zheng Hechun did remember. When the Mirror of Origin shattered in Long Ling’s possession, Su Muluo had sent them one of his own feathers as compensation.
At this point, Zheng Hechun understood and was surprised, “Do you mean—”
“Exactly,” Fan Huai said solemnly. “Ordinary thousand-year-old monsters cannot contend with a true dragon, but if it’s an entity on the same level as a true dragon, it’s a different story.”
“……” Zheng Hechun was stunned for a while before he came to his senses and said, “But isn’t there a deep-seated grudge between dragons and phoenixes?”
“That was many years ago. We don’t know the truth. Some things might not be as simple as they appear,” Fan Huai said. “Some matters might not be as straightforward as they seem.”
Zheng Hechun fell silent again for a few seconds, then nodded, “You’re right.”
He didn’t say anything more but stayed beside Fan Huai and continued walking forward.
After this, the personnel from the Lin City’s Bureau of Extraordinary Beings joined with other groups, forming a massive team. A few hours later, they approached the location of the Golden Dragon.
According to the previously detected aura, the Golden Dragon was hiding in the deep mountains. The area was covered with tall, dense trees, and the paths were rugged, making movement extremely inconvenient.
The Bureau of Extraordinary Beings team consisted of hundreds of people. Once they entered such deep mountains, even with the utmost caution, it would be impossible to avoid making noise. Therefore, before entering the mountains, Fan Huai ordered preparations, with several powerful members of the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings holding magical artifacts standing at the forefront—ready to set up formations if they encountered enemies.
The personnel were arranged neatly, with magical artifacts and weapons at the ready. Just as Fan Huai gave the command to “depart,” and hundreds of members were about to step into the forest, Su Muluo suddenly called out, “Wait!”
He had sensed an enormous amount of demonic aura.
The reason it was described as enormous was that the demonic aura was extremely chaotic, as if countless demons were converging together… and it was sweeping toward them.
“There are many ahead, be careful!”
Due to Su Muluo’s warning, all the Bureau of Extraordinary Being members immediately heightened their vigilance. Some of them were demons themselves and were sensitive to demonic aura. As the aura approached, they warned, “They’re coming!”
As the words were spoken, countless birds took flight, and the forest roiled like a tidal wave. Thousands of demons howled, pouring in from all directions like a mountain torrent, charging toward the Bureau of Extraordinary Being members!
Fan Huai shouted, “Set up the formation!”
They were prepared for this. The leading members of the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings quickly set up a barrier—not to completely isolate all the demons but to intentionally allow a portion to enter. Afterward, the barrier closed, and the remaining members of the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings surged forward to eliminate the demons.
However, the number of attacking demons was too large. Even with careful precautions, the Bureau of Extraordinary Being members couldn’t completely eradicate them immediately… For a moment, the two sides were entangled in fierce combat. Just as Su Muluo was about to take action, an unexpected change occurred—
“Roar—!!”
A domineering dragon roar swept through the mountains. In an instant, the land within a hundred miles shook, and all beasts were terrified. Both humans and demons engaged in battle could not withstand the impact of the dragon’s roar and collapsed to the ground.
Fan Huai managed to hold on for a few seconds before collapsing awkwardly to the ground. Blood surged in his throat, the world spun around him, and he felt a wave of nausea and disgust.
After a while, he struggled to lift his head and realized that the dragon roar had been an indiscriminate attack. Not only was he affected, but the demons that had attacked them were also scattered on the ground. Among the prostrated figures, only one tall and upright figure remained standing, neither retreating nor avoiding.
Su Muluo coldly watched the sky, where a golden dragon soared and then quickly transformed into a man.
The man looked down at Su Muluo with disdain, a cold smile on his lips. “Is it just you this time? Or did that lowly…”
Before he could finish, a clear and melodious phoenix cry cut through the sky. The golden dragon’s eyes reflected countless sharp white feathers slicing through the air. His expression darkened as he immediately retreated—just in time for Su Muluo to appear in front of him.
Boom!
With a loud crash, the golden dragon was struck back several miles and crashed heavily to the ground.
On the other side, the members of the Bureau of Extraordinary Beings on the ground had lost sight of the battle above. However, upon hearing the phoenix cry, they felt a surge of energy—though they didn’t know what the sound was, it was like a celestial melody to their ears, refreshing them both physically and mentally.
Fan Huai was the first to recover. At the same time, many of the demons that had attacked them earlier had risen again. The two groups faced each other, and the battle resumed.
In the sky, Su Muluo spared no effort. His demonic power spread freely, with white feathers moving like thunder and snakes, each attack aimed to be a fatal blow. But soon, he realized something was wrong.
Despite every hit landing, he couldn’t harm the golden dragon—in fact, before his attacks could truly hit the golden dragon, they were being neutralized by an invisible force.
“Oh, you’ve noticed?”
Seeing Su Muluo stop, the golden dragon spread his arms, appearing self-satisfied.
“I’m not the same as before. Not only you, but even if you and that black dragon combined forces, you wouldn’t be able to harm me in the slightest.”
Su Muluo’s face was as cold as water. He could feel the golden dragon’s demonic aura surging, far stronger than when he last met Su Yuan.
Moreover, he had a premonition that this wasn’t the golden dragon’s own strength… but another power.
“You’ve made a deal with the Heavenly Dao?”
The golden dragon raised an eyebrow but did not deny it. Instead, he said, “It’s not a deal.”
He paused, staring at Su Muluo for a few seconds, then revealed a cold and contemptuous smile.
“He chose me, not that lowly black dragon.”
Su Muluo was momentarily stunned. He seemed to glean something from these words, a vague thought flashing through his mind… But during this brief distraction, the golden dragon suddenly closed in on him—
Boom!
Two immense forces collided, creating a deafening explosion in the sky. One figure was blasted away again—the golden dragon.
Su Muluo remained rooted in place, unable to react in time, when another man’s arms tightly wrapped around his waist.
“Phoenix.” Long Ling, who had appeared from somewhere, rested his chin on Su Muluo’s shoulder and squinted slightly. “You left me there just to meet this person?”
Su Muluo: “…”
He met Long Ling’s dark golden eyes, momentarily at a loss for words.
Long Ling bit his lip.
Only then did Su Muluo snap back to his senses. “How did you find me?”
He had clearly cast a sleep spell on his dragon and set up a barrier…
“I can smell the Phoenix’s scent,” Long Ling said with a hint of pride, “Even if the Phoenix runs to the ends of the earth, I can still catch up to you.”
Su Muluo fell silent again.
This line was incredibly familiar. He remembered that his dragon used to say the same thing, but at the time, he had just thought it was a joke… Little did he know he had dug his own grave.
On the other side, the Golden Dragon stood up once more. He was still uninjured but looked disheveled, glaring coldly at Long Ling.
Long Ling met his gaze, holding his Phoenix by the waist, and said indifferently, “Who is he?” He added, “He looks so annoying. Is he the one who owes the Phoenix millions?”
“…” Su Muluo couldn’t help but laugh, saying, “Something like that.”
Long Ling responded with an “Oh,” then looked at the Golden Dragon with a suddenly cold expression.
“I don’t want you here,” Su Muluo said at this moment. “You haven’t recovered your memories yet. I want to wait until everything is resolved before finding you.”
Long Ling replied, “Even if I have amnesia, I won’t let the Phoenix face everything alone.”
Su Muluo said, “But—”
Long Ling interrupted him, adding, “If the Phoenix tries to run off by himself again, I’ll lock him up and keep him in a room, doing this and that every day.”
Su Muluo: “……”
Su Muluo: “???”
If it weren’t for the Golden Dragon being present, he might have ruffled this dragon’s hair in frustration.
Long Ling looked at his Phoenix with a fuming expression, smirked slightly, kissed him on the cheek, and without saying anything more, charged straight at the Golden Dragon.
The battle resumed, this time with Su Muluo and Long Ling against the Golden Dragon. Despite the Golden Dragon possessing the power of the Heavenly Dao, it seemed that this power wasn’t enough to fully counter Su Muluo and Long Ling. It wasn’t long before he began to show signs of decline.
“Roar—”
A high-pitched dragon roar sounded, and the Black Dragon instantly took shape. Its claws, sharp enough to split mountains and shatter rocks, pinned the Golden Dragon, which had also transformed back into its original form, against the cracked stone wall, tearing through scales and directly piercing through its chest!
The Golden Dragon let out a furious roar, and the Black Dragon quickly retreated to avoid the dragon breath. The Golden Dragon’s abdomen was drenched in blood, with visible white bones—but such severe injuries healed completely in just a few seconds.
At the same time, the Golden Dragon transformed back into human form, panting heavily, and once again locked his gaze on Su Muluo.
He growled, “You forced me into this…”
Before he could finish, the Black Dragon realized what he intended to do to his Phoenix and immediately tried to turn around to protect him—but at that moment, an invisible yet irresistible force descended from the sky, freezing the Black Dragon and Su Muluo in place.
They were trapped by this force for only a second, but in that moment, the Golden Dragon had already rushed in front of Su Muluo. A ball of light appeared in his hand and was pressed directly onto Su Muluo’s forehead—
In an instant, Su Muluo felt as if he was falling from a great height, plunging into a deep, cold pool of water. The icy water enveloped him, and countless images surfaced like bubbles. He clutched his head in pain, and sealed memories were forcibly pried open.
The Black Dragon’s enraged roars faded into the distance, and Su Muluo’s soul was uncontrollably drifting, returning to a long time ago…
It was thousands of years ago, before everything had happened.
——
“Phoenix!”
Outside the Phoenix territory, a man blocked the way of the Phoenix Clan leader, who was clad in white robes and had black hair.
The Su Muluo of thousands of years ago stared coldly at him and said, “Fu Sha, move aside.”
The man named “Fu Sha” had a dark expression and said, “If it were any other dragon, it would be natural for you to take it in. But that Black Dragon is different. You must give him to me!”
“What’s wrong with the Black Dragon?” Su Muluo asked. “He hasn’t done anything wrong or harmed anyone.”
Fu Sha said, “But there has never been a Black Dragon among the dragons. This is an ominous sign!”
Su Muluo replied, “Before me, there had never been a White Phoenix among the Phoenix Clan. By your logic, I must also be an ominous sign.”
“You were born with the power of Nirvana, but does he have that?” Fu Sha said. “As far as I know, he doesn’t even know his origins, with no father or mother, drifting along the water… Don’t you find that strange?”
“I don’t,” Su Muluo said. “Move aside.”
No matter what Fu Sha said, his attitude remained firm and resolute. Fu Sha and he were at an impasse for a while, and Fu Sha’s tone gradually grew colder: “No matter what, you must give me that Black Dragon—Phoenix, don’t make things difficult for me. I am doing this for my people.”
Hearing this, Su Muluo’s lips curled into a slightly mocking smile. “For your people… or for your own selfish desires?”
Fu Sha was momentarily stunned. Facing Su Muluo’s clear and beautiful dark eyes, he found himself speechless for a few seconds, unable to answer the question.
Su Muluo ignored him and walked straight towards the Phoenix territory. At that moment, a figure in green rushed out from inside.
“Clan Leader!” Shuang Li said, “The Dragon Clan is scheming! They disguised themselves as you and forcibly took Long Ling away!”
Su Muluo’s expression changed, and he immediately looked back at Fu Sha. Fu Sha, however, did not look at him but instead observed the sky for a few seconds… A smile appeared on his face.
“Time’s up,” he said, looking down at Su Muluo. “Sorry, Phoenix, we’re taking him away.”
