Chapter 139 – I’m Afraid of the Dark

For Lu Shifeng, these comments had a profound impact.

Having lived for centuries, he considered himself well-read, with academic credentials to prove it. He was never one to isolate himself and was constantly learning. Yet, as he read these comments, Lu Shifeng found himself momentarily silenced, starting to doubt where he might have gone wrong and why these people’s perspectives were so sudden?

Lu Shifeng fell into deep thought.

However, being someone who actively sought answers, when he had doubts, he contacted Secretary Jin.

Secretary Jin felt uneasy when she received the communication: “Marshal.”

“Hmm,” Lu Shifeng’s tone was normal. He said, “I have a question that needs your answer.”

?

Secretary Jin visibly panicked.

Whenever Lu Shifeng had nothing to do, he would issue instructions directly. When there was an issue, he would beat around the bush, which was usually an indication that he might be looking to pick a fight tonight.

Secretary Jin’s heart raced with apprehension. Taking a deep breath, she steadied herself like a warrior preparing for a difficult task: “Please, go ahead!”

Lu Shifeng paused for a moment, then finally spoke: “Have you read that recently popular novel?”

“This…?” Secretary Jin froze, a bit dumbfounded.

This matter was beyond her imagination and knowledge.

Lu Shifeng, impatiently: “What’s wrong?”

If it weren’t for the Marshal’s restraint, she might have cursed “Obviously it’s only you who haven’t even read this”, but she managed to hold back.

Secretary Jin hesitated: “Do you mean… ‘Wife Takes the Lead and Dominates the Dragon Clan’s Love for Me’?”

Lu Shifeng: “Yes, have you read it?”

Secretary Jin’s hand trembled, knocking over the nearby cup. She was in a state of panic akin to having her salary cut by Lu Shifeng.

Frowning, Lu Shifeng impatiently tapped the desk.

Secretary Jin stammered: “I have read it. Do you have any questions about it? Should I contact the website and publishers to take it down?”

Not only had she read it, but wasn’t it just something she casually serialized in her spare time? Who would have expected that ‘Wife’ would unexpectedly skyrocket to popularity among the Dark Star people when everyone was hopeful about global affairs?

If Lu Shifeng became angry and investigated…

Secretary Jin imagined the scene and suddenly felt goosebumps all over her body. She even considered where she could bury herself in advance.

Lu Shifeng said, “Why take it down?”

Secretary Jin snapped back to reality: “Ah… ah? So, what do you mean?”

“What do you think,” Lu Shifeng tapped his fingertip on the desk. His tone was calm and slow, yet it carried an underlying danger, “about this male lead?”

Ah, this…

Secretary Jin was immediately at a loss for words!

Did he still not realize? If you don’t know, please check the comments section in the bottom left corner!

Unfortunately, she dared not say this aloud. While she could deliver a knockout blow online, she could only meekly respond to Lu Shifeng in reality: “I think he’s quite good, isn’t he… quite domineering?”

Lu Shifeng narrowed his eyes dangerously: “Do you think he’s scum?”

Secretary Jin broke out in a cold sweat: “Um, well…”

At this critical juncture, she suddenly thought of a perfect answer: “Marshal, whether the male lead is good or bad should be judged by the heroine’s feelings and thoughts.”

Lu Shifeng: “Oh?”

“It mainly depends on the heroine’s psychology and her thoughts,” Secretary Jin offered her advice. “I think whether a male lead is scummy depends on whether he makes the heroine cry. A qualified male lead shouldn’t make the heroine cry.”

Lu Shifeng thought of the thousands of words of psychological description in the book and impatiently raised an eyebrow: “Is there no other way?”

Secretary Jin was stunned: “What?”

Lu Shifeng didn’t say much more: “That’s it.”

After ending the call, he remained silent for a moment, then resumed reading the novel. It was still a serialized story, currently depicting the heroine returning with a child, and the plot where the male lead found her. The male lead treated the heroine well, but she always seemed to evade him.

Her dilemma revolves around three main points:

# Does he really love me? #

# Is it just for the children? #

# Am I just a human after all? #

?

Lu Shifeng furrowed his brows as he read. Before starting this novel, he had never realized how complicated human emotions could be.

Why would the male lead only care about the children?

If he merely liked the children, he could hand the infants over to specialists for care. Why go through the trouble of being so involved?

Is the female lead misunderstanding something about racial hierarchy and power?

As for whether he loves her or not, if he’s willing to be so involved, how could it be anything but love?

And what about being “just a human”? Why is she bothered about this when she hasn’t been sent to the battlefield?

Closing the book, Lu Shifeng sighed deeply, feeling the pressure.

The next day

Today was a day for the three little ones to study.

Early in the morning, Jian Luo had already prepared breakfast. Sulian also woke up early and was helping with the cooking.

A nutritionist came by and said, “Our medical team has delivered the nutrient solution suitable for young dragons’ consumption. This supplement provides daily nutrients necessary for their growth. Please ensure they take it regularly and in the prescribed amount.”

After several days, Jian Luo reunited with the verdant waters: “Good.”

At the dining table, he specially steamed milk cakes and cooked meat porridge. Since his return, there had been more ingredients. He packed custard buns and made sandwiches, filling the table to the brim.

Long Aotian smelled the aroma from the moment he woke up, and even while washing, he couldn’t wait to eat.

Jian Sheng said, “Hey, slow down.”

Because Long Aotian got along well with Jian Sheng, Jian Sheng took him to wash in the morning. Long Batian, on the other hand, preferred to be with Jian Luo. As the little dragons grew day by day, their personalities became more distinct. Long Batian was solitary by nature. Apart from his older brother and younger sister, he ignored everyone else, except when he touched Jian Luo.

If he were placed among the dragon group, he would definitely be an outcast. However, Jian Luo was particularly indulgent toward him, caring for the baby dragons, and said, “Today, you have to attend classes. During the lessons, you need to listen to the teacher and get along well with your classmates…”

Jian Sheng couldn’t help but interject: “Do they even have classmates?”

Jian Luo said, “The three of them together, aren’t they classmates?”

Jian Sheng’s eyes widened in surprise; he couldn’t refute Jian Luo’s logic. No wonder he was his brother.

Outside, Sulian had already set up everything. Jian Luo put down the three babies to eat; they had already learned to eat by themselves, so there was no need for people to feed them.

Sulian pulled Jian Luo aside to look at the entire cabinet of things.

Jian Luo stared blankly, “What is all this?!”

The entire cabinet was filled with various bottles and jars, each labeled with many tags:

“Hard Scale Fat”

“Dragon Biscuits”

“Fur Moisturizer”

Su Liang said, “These were just brought over by the medical team together. They said these are daily nutrient-rich calcium feeds, with a daily portion, helping to strengthen scales, protect the intestines, aid limb development, and protect the heart and lungs.”

Jian Luo’s mouth twitched slightly, “Thank you.”

He went back and found all three had finished eating. After they finished their meal, they liked to lean together to rest, usually back to back, with a comfortable purring sound in their throats. Sometimes, they would softly crawl to one side and shake their little wings comfortably.

Jian Luo came over and found that none of the three had drunk their nutrient fluid. He frowned, “Why didn’t you drink the water?”

He handed the cups to Long Ao Tian, “Little ones, time to drink some water.”

Long Ao Tian instinctively thought there was some benefit, but after tasting the nutrient fluid, his whole little head shook. He took a few steps back, turned his face away, clearly showing his disdain.

Jian Luo gave the cups to the other three, but they all refused.

Su Liang commented from behind, “Maybe they don’t like the taste?”

Picky eaters.

Jian Luo felt a bit helpless. He pretended to be angry and put the cups aside, “Have I spoiled you too much usually?”

The sound of cups tapping the table was not small, causing the little ones to shiver all over.

They could understand speech and knew Jian Luo was angry.

Under Jian Luo’s gaze, Long Ao Tian finally moved. He sluggishly jumped onto the table, first sneakily glancing at Jian Luo’s expression, then whimpering twice in grievance. Like a dragon snapping its wrist, he buried his head and took two sips of the nutrient fluid.

Jian Luo couldn’t hold back his laughter at this small appearance.

Long Ao Tian took two sips and sneezed.

Just as Jian Luo was about to encourage him, Long Ao Tian suddenly staggered two steps toward him. Before he could reach Jian Luo, with a “whoosh,” he suddenly retched and vomited all the nutrient fluid.

Jian Luo’s face changed.

His first reaction was to pull Long Ao Tian up. Luckily, there were always medical personnel on their side, and they immediately came over to check.

After the nurse checked for a while, she said to Jian Luo holding Long Ao Tian, “Preliminary judgment suggests there might be a stress reaction to the nutrient fluid. We need to do further examinations.”

Jian Luo remembered his own situation and felt a bit worried, “Is he okay?”

“He’s fine,” the nurse said, “Perfectly normal.”

Jian Luo thought he could skip class today, but it seemed he couldn’t escape after all. He smiled and patted the dragon cub’s head, “Alright, let’s go.”

He said he would be nearby during class, but in fact, there were some projects he couldn’t stay by their side all the time.

Apart from language and literature classes, Jian Luo couldn’t follow the entire practical hunting course, especially since today’s teacher was Lu Shifeng.

Approaching dusk was the practical session, and Lu Shifeng came specifically to oversee their hunting studies.

Jian Luo prepared to go back to cook dinner. He told Lu Shifeng and Jian Sheng, “You two stay here. I’ll go back first. There’s something cooking in the kitchen.”

Lu Shifeng replied, “Go ahead.”

The three cubs were very excited today. Dragonkin were very energetic and not easily tired, especially after experiencing so many new things today, they were even more excited.

Long Ao Tian came down from the machine, excited to show off his hunting results to his father, but he looked around for Jian Luo and couldn’t find him anywhere.

Lu Shifeng picked him up, “Who told you to stop as soon as you came down?”

Long Ao Tian looked blankly at his father.

Lu Shifeng tossed him back to the training ground, “Continue.”

After just coming down from the machine, resting wasn’t good for the heart. The dragon cub rolled on the ground for a couple of laps, wanting to bite Lu Shifeng but afraid of getting hit. After careful consideration, he obediently started running.

After they finished running a lap, Lu Shifeng was still standing there and waved, “Come here.”

The three cubs cautiously looked at each other, feeling that their father had ill intentions.

But if they didn’t come, they might get punished, so reluctantly, they slowly walked up and stood obediently in front of him.

Lu Shifeng reached out, and in his palm were three jumping fruits.

This was a toy that young dragons loved. It could jump on its own and could be eaten. They always wanted to play with it, but jumping fruits were rare and expensive, so Jian Luo didn’t let them play with it much before.

Long Ao Tian exclaimed in surprise.

Lu Shifeng said, “Do you like it?”

Each dragon took one, and they were very happy. Their little wings fluttered behind them, especially the black one whose red eyes sparkled. Upon hearing Lu Shifeng’s question, it even happily cried out.

Lu Shifeng raised an eyebrow and casually asked, “Does Daddy treat you well?”

The three cubs were soft-hearted and nodded their little heads.

Lu Shifeng continued leisurely, “Then… did you feel uncomfortable last night when Daddy wasn’t around?”

The little dragons hesitated for a moment.

They felt quite comfortable, after all, they always slept with Daddy, so there wasn’t much discomfort.

Little Silver Dragon was the smartest. She hoped she could eat fruits again next time and softly said, “Not uncomfortable.”

Lu Shifeng nodded in satisfaction. The corner of the Marshal’s mouth curled into a meaningful smile, “Do you not want to sleep with Daddy tonight?”

He learned this trick from novels.

At last, the unlucky male lead had some use.

Little Silver Dragon thought for a moment, glanced at her brothers, and finally spoke up, “Daddy, you’re an adult. You should learn to sleep on your own.”

Lu Shifeng said, “Then why don’t you sleep on your own?”

This question left the dragon cubs dumbfounded, staring with wide eyes. It was their little sister who spoke softly, “Because I’m afraid of the dark.”

Lu Shifeng didn’t change his expression, “So am I.”
