Chapter 21

       Lihao, third floor.

The man in the private room moved his hands and feet in an uncomfortably persistent manner. Lan Xin dealt with him perfunctorily, shoving him off while pouring one glass after another wine. The man could hold his liquor well, showing no signs of drunkenness, but as she drank, Lan Xin gradually began to feel light-headed and dizzy. The man took the opportunity to cause trouble, hugged her tightly, and kissed her face with his stubbled mouth. His breath was mixed with a strong smell of alcohol and bad breath, and his hands went into her chest and kneaded it randomly. Lan Xin felt nauseated and knew that this was not going to work. She retched, covered her mouth and said, “Boss Dou, I can’t take it anymore. I need to go to the restroom.”

The man was dissatisfied, but he was afraid that she would actually vomit on him, so he grabbed her butt and said, “Okay, go ahead.”

She picked her throat in the bathroom and vomited out all the wine she had just drank. She lost all strength and leaned against the sink to rest. There was a vibration in the small leather bag she carried with her. She took out her mobile phone, looked at the number, and then threw it aside in disgust. The phone kept vibrating on the counter, and the same number came over one after another. She frowned and picked it up, saying coldly, “What’s the matter?”

“Filthy bitch, you fvcking dare not answer my call! I’ll fvck you, filthy bitch! Come back and see if I don’t fvck you to death…” The curse words came one after another.

Lan Xin’s hand was shaking with anger while holding the phone, and she gritted her teeth and said, “Zhao Jun, have you had enough? I told you not to call me when I’m at work.”

“What kind of job do you work in? Do you show off your coquettishness and let people touch you, or do you spread your legs and let people fvck you? Your customers don’t think you’re loose down there?” The drunken man took a sip and said, “So, you’re pretty good at hiding, huh? Think moving will keep me from finding you? Ha, guess where I am right now?” Then, the sound of his daughter Yuanyuan crying came through the line.

Lan Xin’s eyes turned bloodshot, and she shouted into her mobile phone, “fvck you, Zhao Jun, don’t hit her! She is your daughter!”

“You sleep with other men all day long. Who knows if she is my biological child.” The man said, “If you want me to stop beating this little bastard, give me money.”

As she listened to the little girl’s cries on the phone getting louder and louder, her heart was twisted, and she shed tears, “It was you who forced me into becoming an escort; you pushed me into this! I’ve given you all the money… Zhao Jun, I’m begging you, please, let my daughter and me go… please…”

“No money? If you don’t have any money, just take this little bastard and sell yourselves together. If mother and daughter did it together, your customers would definitely like it more.”

“You’re not a fvcking human being!”

“Yes, I’m not a human being. You are the human being, so you have to be nice to our daughter.” Zhao Jun chuckled, “I’ll be waiting for you at home, but you have to come back with the money before this bottle is finished, or else I will accidentally lose control of myself, and she’ll have to go to the hospital again. It’s not much, I want 20,000 yuan. Give me 20,000, and I’ll leave and never bother you again. Come back soon, Wife.”

The phone was hung up. Lan Xin, who was exhausted both physically and mentally, lay on the sink and cried loudly. The tears smeared the heavy makeup on her face, making her look funny and miserable. However, crying couldn’t solve everything. She still had Yuanyuan, so the only solution for now was to find a way to collect money to fill this bottomless hole. She steeled herself, washed her face with cold water, put on her makeup, forced a smile in the mirror, and walked back to the private room.

After a while, the private room’s door was kicked open violently, and Boss Dou walked out angrily. Lan Xin threw herself at his feet and begged, “Boss Dou, please lend me 20,000 yuan. I am willing to work as a cow or a horse for you. You can do whatever you want.”

“fvck you!” Boss Dou kicked her hard, “I’m here to have fun, not do charity work. Get out!”

Lan Xin grabbed his feet while crying. She had no choice. Zhao Jun was a heavy drinker and gambler, racking up debts and coming to her for money every few days. If he didn’t give the money, he would beat her and Yuanyuan. Not long ago, the loan shark chased her into the rental house, scaring them so much that they hid in the closet and trembled. She moved in a hurry, thinking she could get rid of this scumbag, but she didn’t expect that he would come to her door again. She had borrowed money from all the places where she could borrow money, and when she couldn’t pay it back, others were unwilling to lend her money again, so she could only ask the guests shamelessly. Boss Dou had requested her many times and was considered a regular customer. Unexpectedly, he was unwilling to help her even half a cent. She held on to the other person’s leg tightly, feeling like she was holding on to the last straw.

“Are you not going to let go?” Boss Dou got a little drunk. He grabbed her hair and raised his hand to hit her down. But he was caught in the middle of the swing. He became even more irritable. He turned around and said, “Who the hell has nothing better to do than stick their nose in my business?”

The young man who caught him looked at him coldly with dark brown eyes and said, “Don’t lay a hand on a woman.”

“Get out of here…” Before Boss Dou could finish his words, he was punched hard in the face and fell backwards and heavily to the ground. The person who took action was another person who had just followed behind the young man.

Lan Xin looked up in shock, saw the man standing before her, and said in confusion, “…Ah Zhou?”

Chu Yunhan reached out to support her, pausing just before making contact with her body. His lips tightened as he firmly grasped her arm and helped her up. Although he still felt a strong aversion to touching others, he had managed to improve quite a bit through his efforts at self-restraint and adjustment.

“Long time no see. It looks like you’re not doing well.” He said.

Such a sudden concern made her originally hard-armoured heart suddenly become fragile, and tears instantly flowed down. Lan Xin casually wiped her face with the back of her hand, choking and saying, “It’s not very good.”

“You little brat, daring to hit someone here! Don’t you know whose turf this is?!” Boss Dou was beaten by Bai Yang so badly that his eyes were black. He didn’t dare to come forward anymore. He just covered his face and sat on the ground, grimacing and cursing.

“Oh? Whose territory is it?” Chu Yunhan raised an eyebrow and looked at him.

The man said fiercely, “Hey, you are so arrogant that you dare to cause trouble at the Black Eagle Club’s place. I’ll see how you’ll kneel at my feet and apologise later!”

He smiled and saw Cao Kun and Luo Ning rushing towards the elevator entrance in the corridor but said nothing. Lan Xin’s face turned pale, and she grabbed his wrist suddenly and said, “Don’t speak; I’ll take care of everything.”

She knew that the clients coming here had various complicated social connections. From her previous encounters, although this Boss Dou was called a boss, he felt more like someone’s lackey. Even if he wasn’t involved in any illegal activities, he was someone ordinary people couldn’t afford to offend. Furthermore, Lihao was under the control of Golden Eagle, and to put it bluntly, anyone who could manage this kind of grey business smoothly had forces and managers behind them that were not to be trifled with. She had seen the fate of those who caused trouble in Lihao, and now with Ah Zhou and his friends getting into a fight and hurting someone because of her, she couldn’t let them get hurt any further. She quickly calculated in her mind how to explain the situation, but no good excuses came to her, leaving her trembling with anxiety and fear.

This woman was still the same. She was scared to death, but she had to stand before him.

Chu Yunhan remembered when he was working as a waiter at Lihao and accidentally spilt wine on a guest. She had stepped before him to apologise and smile, just like this time. Later, under that guest’s harassment, she ended up taking off her clothes and being groped and kissed to smooth things over. She didn’t ask him to thank her afterwards; she just said, ‘I’m used to being touched’. Later, the two got closer and vaguely learned about her family affairs. She had an alcoholic and gambling husband and a five-year-old daughter, and the whole family relied on her to earn money. She always used heavy makeup to hide the traces of beatings on her face. At that time, he just wanted to keep a low profile and save his life, and he could not do anything more for her, but things were different now.

Chu Yunhan took off his thin coat and put it on her, then picked up the handkerchief and wiped her face with gentle and careful movements. He was used to being a playboy in the past, and now he was still very skilled in how he treated girls. Lan Xin was confused by his actions and looked at the nightclub executive parked aside in panic. He was about to say something when he saw the general manager, Cao Kun, accompanying him with a smile. He said, “Young Master Yun, I didn’t know it was you. It’s really rude not to come down to greet you.”

“Don’t bother with the formalities. I don’t have much time, so let’s make this short.” Chu Yunhan was a little impatient. “This guest wanted to be rough with the woman, so he was beaten. The one who beat him was Mr. Bai Yang, the one next to me. If the police want you to arrest someone, arrest him.”

“Eldest Young Master…” Bai Yang didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

“However, I’ve worked here before and have a good understanding of Supervisor Luo’s abilities. He will definitely find a way to ‘persuade’ this gentleman to give up on calling the police and handle everything properly.” He turned to Luo Ning, smiling ambiguously, and said, “Right?”

Luo Ning was a member of the Intelligence Department of the Black Eagle Association, and the person Chu Yichen arranged to follow him in Lihao. He knew Chu Yunhan’s identity from the time he hid in Lihao. What he said was obviously a bit of a threat. If he didn’t handle it well, he would settle the score with himself. Luo Ning understood in his heart, stood with his hands down and said, “Okay.”

Chu Yunhan saw Lan Xin looking at him in shock and smiled, “Let’s go.”

Seeing the three people who had beaten him walk away, Boss Dou finally stood up and asked Cao Kun angrily, “You actually let him go like this? He beat me! Is this how you treat your guests? What’s with the Black Eagle Club, it’s useless…”

“This guest, I think you’d better pay attention to your words.” Luo Ning’s tall body stood before him, covering most of the light above his head. Cao Kun said helplessly, “Let’s talk about compensation for you in detail. Mr. Dou, please follow me.”

“Is there any mistake? Why should you pay compensation if he hits someone?”

“Because this nightclub is one of his properties.” Luo Ning said expressionlessly.

Autumn was approaching, and the weather had cooled down at night. Lan Xin walked out of the nightclub and said softly, “Ah Zhou, you…”

       “My name is Chu Yunhan.”

She recited the name silently and smiled reluctantly, “Thank you, I…I have to go back.”

“What do you want 20,000 yuan for?” he asked.

She lowered her head and was silent for a moment, then said, “To save my daughter…and save myself…”

In fact, Chu Yunhan had already made a rough guess in his mind, but he just asked her for confirmation. Turning to Bai Yang, he said, “Go and call some bodyguards, and then find me the person in charge of this area.”

Chapter 20

“Have you heard that the CEO has been replaced? The eldest son of the Chu family has come to take charge personally.”

“Is it because of our poor performance here? Isn’t it going to change? Oh my god! I don’t want to be laid off.”

“What’s there to be nervous about? This Eldest Young Master is nothing like the second young master, who’s the chairman. He’s a well-known playboy! I’ve heard he’s only good at partying and chasing women, and he doesn’t have any real experience. I think he’s just here to put on a show and make himself look legitimate in the business world.”

“That’s true. But why does he have to come here of all places? With such a huge enterprise like Golden Eagle, couldn’t he pick somewhere better? The physical economy has been in decline for years; our company’s profits are dwindling year after year. I wonder when it will get better… Oh my. “

In the office area on the sixth floor, the sales department employees were gathered together, engrossed in gossip, completely unaware of anyone passing by. As they moved further around the corner, the chatter of the secretarial staff could be heard coming from the break room.

       “Look, this is it.”

“Wow, he looks so handsome in the photo!”

“I know Zhang Lili, who works at the group headquarters. She said that she had met Eldest Young Master Chu once. He was even more handsome in person than in the photos. He was like a walking hormone!”

“No, the Chu family’s genes are too good. The sparkling Second Young Master Chu is already so handsome, and this one is even more… Only now do I feel that it’s great to be in the secretarial department. I’ll get to see him every day. My mood at work is going to change completely!”

“You’re not thinking about trying to flirt with him, are you?”

“I would like to, but I’m afraid he’s seen so many women that he wouldn’t even look at someone like me.”

“That’s not necessarily true. Isn’t it always like that in dramas? The prince doesn’t like the princess; he likes Cinderella. Look at his name, Chu Yunhan—it’s both elegant and romantic. Tsk tsk.”

“Hurry up and touch up your makeup. Maybe your Prince Yun will show up today.”

       …

The young man walking in front stopped and listened for a while, then turned to the deputy general manager, Gao Jin, who followed behind him and said, “They are chatting during working hours, huh? It feels quite pleasant to work here.”

Gao Jin was already sweating all over his head and said anxiously, “These people… are really outrageous, I…”

“How should we deal with it according to the system?”

“Notification and criticism.1It typically refers to a practice in which individuals report issues or problems—such as misconduct, inefficiency, or violations of regulations—followed by a critical assessment or commentary on those issues.[\mfn]”

“Make them write a self-reflection and upload it to the company intranet homepage, and have the HR department issue a warning. If it happens a second time, they’ll be dismissed immediately.”

       “Understood.”

“By the way, just keep two reliable and capable people in the secretary department. I don’t like having overly ambitious women around me.”

“…Understood.” Gao Jin nodded repeatedly, feeling unsettled. Initially, he thought the eldest young master was just here to put on a show, but when he asked for the materials the day before and returned them within an hour for a rewrite, it became clear that he was serious. Today, with his arm in a sling, Chu Yunhan had shown up at the company, ready to enforce a crackdown on discipline.

It seemed this eldest young master of the Chu family was not here to play. The Golden Prosperity department store was definitely going to undergo some changes.

Sitting in his office, Chu Yunhan stared at the complex financial statements on the computer screen, feeling a bit anxious. Although he had an MBA, he had no practical experience in managing a business. Now, Chu Yichen had handed him a poorly managed company without any assistance and expected him to increase the sales to a nearly impossible level. To put it bluntly, it was essentially just a setup for failure.

However, this was his only chance to get rid of that man, and he couldn’t give up just yet.

Even though he felt uncertain, he decided to start by addressing the internal issues first and then rectifying them. In the morning, Chu Yunhan reviewed all the financial documents. In the afternoon, he took the building renovation layout and toured the various floors, checking the counter setups and decoration details. By the evening, he called a meeting with the heads of each department to assess each supervisor’s capabilities and ideas.

At eight o’clock in the evening, he went to a private club on Donglin Road to have tea. Although it was called tea, he hardly touched the cup. He had a wide circle of friends, and among the wealthy young men he knew, while they were notorious for their extravagant lifestyles, they could be quite capable when it came to serious work. Many held positions in family businesses. Previously, Chu Yichen had confined him, cutting off his connections with these people, but now he decided to invite them over. This would help him reconnect and expand his network, as well as learn from them about how to run a company.

The always charming Eldest Young Master Chu actually asked them for advice in a serious manner, which aroused everyone’s ridicule.

“Young Master Yun, Young Master Yun, I never thought you would have such a day.”

“Hey, you didn’t let that iceberg cousin of yours beat up your arm, did you?”

“I guess so. He’s gone to work obediently after this beating.”

“Such a tragedy, such a tragedy! It truly makes those who hear it feel sorrow, and those who see it shed tears. Hahaha!”

“fvck you all. Hurry up and talk.” Chu Yunhan cursed and took out a notebook. Luckily, it was his left hand that was broken, so he could still write. After a whole tea session, his stomach was still empty, but his notebook was filled to the brim.

After such a long and exhausting day, he was completely drained of energy, so he fell asleep in the car on the way home. He slept so deeply, barely stirring even when the vehicle moved. It wasn’t until he was put on the bed that he suddenly woke up. He felt someone touching him and instinctively pushed the person away.

The situation became a little awkward.

Chu Yunhan looked at Chu Yichen, who was holding a blanket in one hand and was about to cover him. He swallowed a mouthful of saliva and said, “I… will do it myself…”

The man released his hand, said nothing, and walked toward the door.

       “It’s…”

Chu Yichen turned around and looked at him.

“This place is too far from the company… It’s tiring to go back and forth… Well, I think… it’s more convenient to live in the company…” He said these words awkwardly, feeling a little guilty.

“Living in the company isn’t really appropriate. I’ll have Bai Xiao prepare an apartment for you, and you can move in anytime.” The man’s tone was very calm. “Is there anything else?”

Just like that…he agreed? Isn’t it too easy? The somewhat unreal feeling made Chu Yunhan pause for a moment, and then he said, “…That’s all.”

       “Rest.” The door closed.

He breathed a sigh of relief, scratched his head, and suddenly thought of a question. How did he get back to the room?

The feeling just now was probably… being carried back. Who did it?

       Who else could it be?

Who else dared to carry him?

       …

Although Chu Yichen had promised not to touch him for three months, the previous training made Chu Yunhan tense up the moment he saw him, instinctively wanting to stay as far away as possible. So, on the very evening he received the apartment keys, Chu Yunhan eagerly moved into the apartment near the company.

He lay down on the unfamiliar but soft big bed. He just felt that he was in heaven at this moment. He wanted to get up and set off two firecrackers to express his joy. When he thought of the ‘eight percent’, he suddenly wilted again and quickly got up and went to the desk to work.

The following day, as soon as he started work, Chu Yunhan scheduled a meeting with the finance director. The director stated that with effective promotion, the store’s anniversary week sales could roughly match last year’s figures, but an 8% increase would be a challenging target. This left Chu Yunhan feeling a bit troubled. After much thought, a new plan formed in his mind.

With online sales gaining traction and physical retail on a steady decline, he realised it might be better to embrace this trend. Golden Prosperity originally had a website, but it was basically abandoned due to the low number of clicks. Revitalising the company’s dormant website could give the stagnant company a much-needed boost. However, restarting the site meant significant time and resource investments. It was unknown whether they could reach enough visibility, and meet the 8% sales growth goal before the store anniversary.

At this moment, he had two paths in front of him. One was to continue step by step on the road of traditional physical marketing, increase publicity, increase preferential activities, and attract customers to the door. The other option was to forge a new path and target online shoppers. It was a high-stakes gamble, one that would shape his future; a misstep would mean total failure with no chance of recovery.

Chu Yunhan closed his eyes and leaned back on the swivel chair. After a long time, when he opened his eyes again, his eyes were no longer hesitant. He said to Bai Yang, who was waiting aside, “Arrange for a meeting tonight with these people.”

Deputy General Manager Gao Jin hadn’t been sleeping well these past few days. Ever since the Eldest Young Master Chu took over, half of Golden Prosperity’s department heads had been replaced within a week, with newcomers carefully selected by headhunters who were well-qualified and highly capable. A team of network engineers was even brought in from overseas to revamp Jintai’s online platform, and he was assigned as project manager. At 47, Gao Jin usually only watched movies online and knew nothing about the intricacies of the internet. Now, handed this hot potato, he had no idea what to do. After several restless nights, he nervously approached Chu Yunhan, saying that his health was poor and that he was unfit for such a role.

Chu Yunhan was very kind. He gave him a holiday and asked him to have a good rest. The next day, he promoted the head of the network department, who had just joined the job as the acting deputy president, taking over his position. Only then did Gao Jin realise that, as a longtime employee, he had made considerable contributions even without significant achievements. It was not convenient for this guy to fire him directly, so he used this trick. On the bright side, Gao still retained his honorary title, which he took as a sign of Chu’s consideration.

When things got busy, time seemed to be insufficient. Chu Yunhan threw himself wholeheartedly into his work, almost wishing he could stretch each day to 48 hours.

After addressing issues with the website’s style, the backend listing pages, link errors, and server instability, two months passed. The cast on Chu Yunhan’s arm was removed, and the official website of Golden Prosperity Department Store entered its final testing phase. Merchants on Golden Prosperity started listing some of their products and initiated a first round of trial sales, while the marketing team launched a large-scale online and offline campaign simultaneously. During the trial sales, however, some issues emerged, such as payments being made for out-of-stock items or inventory not displaying on the page. Additionally, the return and exchange channels were inefficient, causing some customer dissatisfaction.

However, the surge in clicks on the website gave Chu Yunhan a glimmer of hope. He instructed the network department to refine the details further and brought in staff from sales department and planning department to design a ‘try offline, buy online’ clothing sale event. Collaborating with an online payment platform, they offered a discount to customers who paid online. Once the plan was ready, they would start promoting it immediately, aiming to launch it for the store’s anniversary.

During this period, Chu Yunhan spun around like a top every day, often spending entire days in the conference room, analysing data with senior managers and strategising. When he got tired, he would nap at the table, wake up, drink coffee, and continue working. Sometimes, he thought that if managing one company left him this exhausted, Chu Yichen, with so many responsibilities, must be exhausted to death. He would then mentally grumble things like, “That guy really is crazy,” “I can’t match him,” or “Why am I even thinking about him?”

Seeing their boss working so hard, the employees felt reluctant to slack off, making overtime a norm. Chu Yunhan, noticing their dedication, generously paid overtime wages, earning considerable goodwill among the staff.

Seeing that the store anniversary was getting closer and closer, his nerves became more and more nervous. He couldn’t sleep well for several nights in a row. He wanted to go out for some air and relax, so he asked Bai Yang to drive out for a walk. Catching the sight of a familiar golden sign in the distance, he felt a sudden urge and said, “Take me to Lihao.”

Chapter 74

When Zhan Weiyang hurried down the stairs in slippers, Auntie Luo was cleaning the dining room. She heard his footsteps and looked out, asking curiously, “Yangyang, why did you get up so early?”

Before he could answer, Zhan Weiyang had already opened the door and ran out.

Auntie Luo shouted behind him, “Why are you wearing so little and going out?”

When Zhan Weiyang ran out of the house, Zhan Pengcheng had already started the car and drove forward. Zhan Pengcheng did not notice Zhan Weiyang and the car turned along the path and drove into the neighbourhood’s driveway.

At this time, there was no pedestrian in the neighbourhood. Zhan Pengcheng was in a hurry to send someone to the airport, and the car was also very fast.

Zhan Weiyang chased after the car for several steps, but it quickly left him far behind. He stopped, panting, and opened his mouth as if to call out “Pei Qing,” but in the end, he didn’t say a word.

He could only stare blankly at the car gradually moving away. Soon Auntie Luo chased him out, asked him what he was doing, grabbed his arm and pulled him into the house.

Seeing Zhan Weiyang’s eyes red, Auntie Luo said, “Your father is just driving them to the airport and will return in the morning. He won’t leave. Why are you in a hurry?”

       Zhan Weiyang didn’t say anything.

In the car heading to the airport, no one noticed that Zhan Weiyang was chasing after them.

Pei Qing sat in the last row next to Zhan Xueqing. After getting on the car, Pei Qing looked at the window of his room on the second floor from the car window, closed his eyes, and tilted his head to sleep.

Actually, he didn’t fall asleep; he just didn’t want to talk to others.

Zhan Xueqing plugged in headphones and listened to the music quietly.

It was early in the morning, and it was Chinese New Year. Traffic was smooth along the way. Zhan Pengcheng drove the car to the terminal and helped them take out the suitcases. Then, he specifically said to Pei Qing, “Come back often.”

       Pei Qing said, “I will.”

Zhan Pengcheng reached out and patted his arm. He felt that they had spent a long time together and felt a little reluctant. Then he said to Pei Jingrong and Zhan Yingfei, “You all take care. Come back often to see this old man when you have time. Send me a message when you arrive.”

Zhan Yingfei nodded, “Eldesr brother, thank you for taking care of mom.”

Zhan Pengcheng said, “What’s the point of saying this, isn’t it what I should be doing?”

There were traffic police on the car channel of the terminal urging the vehicles to see off. Zhan Pengcheng couldn’t stop for too long, so he turned around, got in the car and left.

Pei Qing and the other four dragged their luggage into the terminal. While Pei Jingrong and Zhan Yingfei were checking in their luggage, Zhan Xueqing said to Pei Qing, “Just now in the car, I sent a message to Zhan Weiguang.”

       Pei Qing looked at her.

Zhan Xueqing looked very serious, “Actually, I should have told Uncle, but I couldn’t say it. I don’t think you can do this.”

Pei Qing said, “What can’t I do?”

Zhan Xueqing glanced in the direction of his parents and saw that they were still waiting to print their boarding passes, so he said, “Pei Qing, you have to understand that this is no longer a problem between you and me. Zhan Weiyang is my younger cousin, and you know he has intellectual problems.”

       Pei Qing didn’t say anything.

At this time, Pei Jingrong and Zhan Yingfei came over with their boarding passes. Zhan Xueqing didn’t continue. Zhan Yingfei was a little curious, smiled and asked, “What are you talking about?”

       Zhan Xueqing said, “Nothing.”

Pei Jingrong came over, raised his hand to put his arm around Zhan Yingfei’s shoulder, and said, “Let’s go, let’s go through security first.”

After getting on the plane, Pei Qing and Zhan Xueqing sat in a row.

       Zhan Xueqing was silent.

Pei Qing said first, “I will handle the matter between me and Yangyang myself.”

Zhan Xueqing turned her head and looked at him, “Are you crazy? My uncle will kill you!”

Pei Qing said, “I know, I said I will handle it.”

Zhan Xueqing was a little angry, “You can’t bully Zhan Weiyang like this! You know he is clueless!”

Pei Qing asked her, “What do you mean by bullying Zhan Weiyang? Do you think he is a child and he should never fall in love and get married in his life, or aren’t you the one bullying him?”

Zhan Xueqing said, “You know it’s not the same thing.”

Pei Qing said, “Xueqing, don’t you know that there is no such thing as right or wrong in love? You pursue what you like, and I will pursue what I like.”

Zhan Xueqing’s expression was complicated, not just simple anger or anxiety. She said: “But you are different from Zhan Weiyang. You know Yangyang—”

“Yangyang is just an ordinary boy,” Pei Qing said in a calm tone, “You don’t have to emphasise it repeatedly.”

Zhan Xueqing turned her head and looked out the plane window. She said, “Anyway, you don’t need to tell me about your affairs. I can’t control what you want to do. But it involves Yangyang. I can’t just know it and not care. I have already told Zhan Weiguang about it. You can decide how to explain it to him.”

       Pei Qing said, “Thank you.”

Zhan Xueqing was stunned. “What do you mean?”

Pei Qing looked ahead. “Zhan Weiguang should always know. I will tell him even if you don’t say it.”

Zhan Xueqing looked at him, took a deep breath, and said, “Think it over carefully.”

Before the plane was ready to take off, Pei Qing looked at his phone. He didn’t receive any messages from Zhan Weiyang or Zhan Weiguang.

The flight attendant had already walked to his side. He turned his phone to flight mode and put it in his bag.

Zhan Weiyang didn’t manage to catch up with Pei Qing. He returned to the room sadly, took off his shoes, climbed onto the bed, and got into the still warm quilt.

He was no longer sleepy but felt sad as if he had been abandoned by the whole world.

After a while, Auntie Luo came up to the second floor, knocked on the door, and asked him, “Yangyang, do you want to continue sleeping? Do you want to get up and have breakfast?”

Zhan Weiyang tried to cheer himself up and said, “I don’t want to eat.”

Auntie Luo said, “Then you can sleep a little longer.”

Then Zhan Weiyang heard Auntie Luo go into the next room. She should be tidying up and cleaning the room. Zhan Xueqing left and would not come back for the time being. When the sheets and quilts were packed, Zhan Weiyang should move back to his room.

Then, this room might be tidied up and left empty, or maybe his second uncle and his wife might move in. Zhan Weiyang didn’t know what his family was planning, but it was no longer Pei Qing’s room.

Thinking of this, Zhan Weiyang felt like crying sadly.

He thought he couldn’t fall asleep at all, but after a while, he fell asleep again in a daze. It was quite late when he woke up. It was completely bright outside, and the greyish-white was visible through the curtains.

When Zhan Weiyang opened his eyes, he saw someone sitting by the bed. He thought it was Pei Qing and was surprised and happy. He said, “Qing ge, why are you back?”

Just as he finished speaking, he found that the person was not Pei Qing but Zhan Weiguang.

So the smile on Zhan Weiyang’s face disappeared instantly, and he frowned slightly, “Why is it you?”

Zhan Weiguang rarely looked so serious. He pulled Zhan Weiyang up, his movements were a bit rough, reached out to pick up his pajamas, and said, “Let me see you.”

Chapter 19

Chu Yu sat down on the chair next to the bed and handed him a glass of water.

His black hair had become a little grey under the erosion of the years. His slender figure was not out of shape due to self-discipline and exercise. The gilt cufflinks on the dark blue shirt were fastened meticulously. The previous leader of the Chu family was over half a century old, but he still had a strong aura. His black eyes seemed to be able to penetrate everything. Even if he glanced calmly, it would make people feel inexplicably oppressive.

In the room, Hei Yu, Bai Xiao, and Du Chuan stood at attention, hands respectfully folded, not daring to make a sound. Bai Xiao, usually lighthearted and quick to laugh, wore a stern expression as if he was about to deliver a presidential speech. Hei Yu, typically stoic, now seemed as rigid as a steel plank. Du Chuan, standing quietly beside the kettle, looked guilt-ridden and uneasy, blaming himself for failing to look after the young master adequately; he had practically faded into the background, blending in with his surroundings.

Chu Yichen raised his neck and drank the water inside, then lowered his head guiltily, “I didn’t expect to alarm you…it was my fault.”

“The fault you are referring to is that you made yourself pass out and needed me to take over the work or to make Yunhan jump from the third floor to death?” The man in a dark blue shirt looked at him and asked.

Chu Yichen’s gaze trembled, “…you know about him.” After saying that, he held the cup and wanted to ask something, but he didn’t ask.

“You want to ask, when did I know.”

       He nodded.

“It started when you were captured by the Grey Wolf.” Chu Yu looked at his expression and smiled slightly, “You don’t seem very surprised.”

“When I was rescued, Hei Yu mentioned that one team deviated from the plan to head north of the warehouse and instead lay in ambush near the flatlands, where they later eliminated Gray Wolf’s main force. The squad leader of that team was one of Uncle Can’s men. I suspect… it might have been under your orders.”

“Gray Wolf was the final test I set for you, but it’s disappointing that both you and your subordinates fell so short. As the head of the Chu family, you recklessly exposed yourself to danger, fully aware it might be a trap. Utterly foolish,” the man remarked, his gaze sweeping over the bowed head of Chu Yichen before casting a cold glance at Hei Yu and Bai Xiao standing nearby. “And as his subordinates, failing to curb his impulsive decisions, allowing strategic oversights, and even letting him push himself to the point of collapse—it’s sheer incompetence.”

This sentence was extremely heavy that Hei Yu and Bai Xiao turned pale and knelt down simultaneously, lowering their heads. They had been trained since childhood, much like loyal retainers, bound to the rules of the Chu family: kneeling to the heavens, the earth, and their master. Normally, Chu Yichen would not let them kneel down, but Chu Yu’s words left them so ashamed and speechless that they could only sink silently to their knees. Nearby, Du Chuan stood in a state of uncertainty, but his attention sharpened when he suddenly heard his own name mentioned.

“Du Chuan.” Chu Yu said slowly, “You have always been prudent in doing things, so I gave Yichen to your care. Now it seems that this job seems a bit difficult for you.”

“Master!” Du Chuan was so frightened that he almost burst into tears, “I failed to take good care of Young Master. I dare not ask for your forgiveness. I only ask that you give me another chance…”

“Father…” Seeing them like this, Chu Yichen couldn’t bear it and said bravely, “Everything is my fault. I insisted on…”

“Of course it’s your fault,” Chu Yu interrupted him. “I originally had no intention of stepping in to help you. Since you’re willing to sacrifice your life for someone else, why should I stop you? Letting you fulfill your heroic death wish would grant your desire. But if you died, your father would be heartbroken.” Then, he looked toward the door and said, “Alright, come on out. You’ve been hiding long enough.”

Xu Ye, who was wearing the same white shirt as him, walked in from the door. With a bit of embarrassment on his face that he had been exposed for eavesdropping, he said, “You make it sound like you won’t be sad.”

“Dad.” Chu Yichen didn’t expect him to be here and was a little surprised.

“Alright, let the children get up; the ground is cold.” Xu Ye’s voice was soft and gentle, like a breeze blowing on the face, making people feel at ease. “You can’t blame them entirely either. Who told you to raise a good son who is just as stubborn as you? They wanted to stop him, but they couldn’t; they tried to persuade him, but he wouldn’t listen.”

“So it’s my fault, huh.” Chu Yu looked at him and said.

Xu Ye smiled, “It’s my fault, okay?”

When he smiled like this, Chu Yu’s expression softened a bit. He knew that Xu Ye followed him because he was afraid that he would blame them. He shook his head helplessly and said, “It’s because you’ve spoiled him.”

Xu Ye sat down by the bed and said, “Alright, take this opportunity to let Yichen rest well. You can help him manage things. And isn’t there a bored Uncle Tang? Let him teach these two kids; it’s a way for him to still be useful.”

“You have arranged so well for us. What about yourself?” Chu Yu raised an eyebrow. After being together for many years, this person already fully understands his thoughts.

“I’ll just take care of you two.” Xu Ye curved his eyes into a smile.

There was a slight smile on Chu Yu’s lips, and his expression became slightly better when he turned to the two people kneeling on the ground. He said in a deep voice, “Hei Yu, Bai Xiao, for this month, Tang Can will assist you in handling internal gang affairs in the capacity of a consultant. You will follow his lead. If by the end of the month you do not earn his approval, you won’t need to stay by Yichen’s side any longer.”

“Understood.” The two of them raised their heads and looked at Xu Ye gratefully before leaving.

“Du Chuan, you are responsible for taking good care of this kid, arranging his schedule, ensuring rest and nutrition. You don’t have to do it if he keeps passing out again.”

       “Understood.” Du Chuan agreed hastily.

“Go down first. You didn’t get to rest during the time he was unconscious.” Xu Ye said.

“Alright.” Du Chuan took the tea tray and walked out.

Only father and son were left in the room.

Xu Ye touched Chu Yichen’s head, “The doctor said there is no big problem; it’s just due to fatigue. You should rest well for the next few days and leave the matter to your father for the time being.”

Chu Yu said solemnly, ‘I will only give you a month’s time to adjust, and after a month, everything will be returned to you. You must remember that as a member of the Chu Family, I can accept your adjustment at any time. Still, I won’t do anything like this time of overstepping my bounds in fulfilling the family head’s authority a second time.’

“Understood, Father.” Chu Yichen sat up straight and replied seriously.

“Now that the official business is over, next is private business.”

Chu Yichen knew what he was referring to, lowered his gaze and said, “I will take care of it.”

Chu Yu slowly said, “I know very well why you took over as the head of the family, and I also know your obsession with Yunhan very well. I once told you that there are always some things in this world that you cannot control and some people you cannot have. If you force it, you will only hurt others and yourself. You replied to me that since you cannot have him, as long as you can see him safe and happy, that would be enough. But you later changed your original intention.” He paused, “Whether out of revenge or jealousy, you got him in your own way and then forced him to become a sub. Chu Yunhan has an outgoing personality, is kind yet weak, and is proud and impulsive—like a tree that grows wildly. Yet you cut off its branches and forced it to grow in the way you need. Yichen, what you really want is a tree or just a bare piece of wood?”

Chu Yichen’s eyelashes trembled, and he spoke with some difficulty, “I underestimated him and overestimated myself. But aside from this, I don’t know what else to do to keep him. The Gray Wolves, Sheng the Fifth, the repeated betrayals and escapes—I’m afraid that one day he might really do something that forces me to kill him. Or perhaps it’s just my selfishness at play; I want to have him… that’s all.” At this moment, he resembled a lost child, wandering, at a loss, and filled with so much sorrow.

Xu Ye held him gently, patting his back with a sense of compassion. Time had passed too quickly; the child of years gone by had grown into a young man taller than him. As a father, he watched his son tread a difficult path, saw his smile grow rarer, and noticed the maturity and aloofness that didn’t suit his age as he took on the responsibilities of the entire family. At this moment, his natural vulnerability served as a reminder that he was still a child capable of joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness.

“I just went to see Yunhan. He only had a few fractures and slight damage to his internal organs. He had surgery and has woken up.” Xu Ye knew that he was worried and that it was hard to ask, so he told him about the situation, “He didn’t say anything to me, just kept silent. I contacted the Zhou family and told them that something had happened to him. I asked them to send Sister-in-law and Jiahui over to see him.”

Chu Yichen nodded. This was the safest thing to do. Chu Yunhan already wanted to die, and only the presence of someone he cared about could comfort him.

“Yichen, now that the matter is over, what are you going to do?” Xu Ye asked.

“…I haven’t thought about it yet.”

Chu Yu said, “You are the head of the Chu family, and Chu Yunhan is a family member who has participated in the rebellion. It is up to you to decide how to deal with him. We will not interfere, but I hope your decision will not make you regret it.”

After that, Chu Yu began to assist his son in managing matters related to the Golden Eagle, helping to streamline the somewhat chaotic decision-making system. He delegated responsibilities to Hei Yu, Bai Xiao, and other officials, bringing in a group of newcomers trained by Tang Can to minimise the pressure on Chu Yichen as much as possible.

Chu Yunhan stayed at the old residence to recover from his injuries. His mother, Zhou Yuran, often came to see him, bringing along Zhou Jiahui. Under the careful care of doctors and nutritionists, his health improved day by day, and his spirits lifted significantly. He claimed that he had accidentally fallen from the windowsill, and Zhou Yuran believed him. However, Jiahui was sceptical and, feeling indignant, went to confront Chu Yichen, questioning whether he had bullied her brother.

Chu Yichen never visited Chu Yunhan but kept asking about his situation from Du Chuan. In his free time outside of official duties, he played chess and chatted with his two fathers, worked out every day, went to bed early and got up early.

Time flew by. A month later, Chu Yu took the veterans and retreated to the second line, and Chu Yichen returned to take charge of the overall situation. In the evening, he came to Chu Yunhan’s room. Chu Yunhan’s broken hand bones had not yet fully healed, so he hung his arm with a bandage. Seeing his appearance, her whole body stiffened, and she instinctively shrank back.

The man sat down in the farthest chair from him and said, “I heard from Du Chuan that you can get out of bed now.”

Chu Yunhan remained silent, his eyes filled with wariness.

“The relationship between us should also come to an end.” Chu Yichen looked at him and said calmly, “I will give you a chance. Two years ago, the company acquired a department store in the north of the city, but its performance has been poor. I’m assigning you to take over as the general manager. After the three-month store anniversary, if the sales exceed last year’s figures by more than eight percent, I’ll set you free. Conversely, if you fail to meet this target, you’ll obediently come back to be my sub.”

Chu Yunhan was a little surprised when he heard these words. He was stunned for a while and said, “What you said…is true?”

       “I never lied to you.”

He pursed his lips uncomfortably, “So these three months…”

“I won’t touch you, nor will I restrict any of your actions. However, this opportunity will become void if you try to outsmart me with tricks like a ‘golden cicada shedding its shell’ or secretly escaping. You know what will happen if you attempt to cheat or run away and I catch you.”

       Chu Yunhan trembled.

“You can take office tomorrow, and Bai Yang will accompany you.” After the man said that, he stood up and left without staying for a moment longer. The young bodyguard named Bai Yang saluted him and said, “Young Master Yun, from today on, I am responsible for your safety. You can ask me to do anything you want.”

He nodded, thought for a while, and said, “Do you have any information about that company? I want to see it.”

Chapter 73

Shortly after twelve o’clock, everyone went back to rest without waiting for the Spring Festival Gala to end.

Zhan Pengcheng and Zhan Weiguang sent Zhan Yingfei and the others back to the hotel. After that, the father and son walked back. Zhan Pengcheng’s steps were already stumbling and unsteady. Zhan Weiguang was a little disgusted, but he reached out to support Zhan Pengcheng from time to time.

When they got home, the living room on the first floor was still a mess, and the mahjong tiles were scattered across the table, not yet put away.

Zhan Weiguang locked the door and turned off all the lights on the first floor. He helped Zhan Pengcheng up to the second floor and sent him to the room before returning to the third floor.

When he entered the room, Zhan Weiguang saw Zhan Xiusong still lying on the bed playing with his phone, so he asked, “Are you still not asleep?”

Zhan Xiusong put down his phone, turned over and whispered to Zhan Weiguang, “When I went upstairs just now, I heard Qing jie and Qing ge quarrelling.”

“Ah?” Zhan Weiguang had started to take off his clothes but stopped when he heard this, “What are they quarrelling about?”

Zhan Xiusong shook his head, “I don’t know.”

Just now, he was the first to run upstairs, and when he had passed the second floor and was on the stairs leading to the third floor, he heard Zhan Xueqing calling Pei Qing.

Pei Qing was with Zhan Weiyang at the time and was slowly coming up from downstairs. When he heard Zhan Xueqing’s voice, he asked her, “What’s the matter?”

Zhan Xueqing said, “Don’t you think you’ve gone too far?”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t understand what Zhan Xueqing was saying, and he looked at Pei Qing with some confusion.

Pei Qing asked Zhan Weiyang, “Is Yangyang tired?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

Pei Qing said, “Then go to bed.”

Zhan Xiusong stood on the stairs and listened for a while. He didn’t hear what they said, so he went upstairs alone. Now thinking about it, he said to Zhan Weiguang, “It’s just that Qing jie said Qing ge was too much. I don’t know what was too much.”

Zhan Weiguang frowned, not too interested in his heart, and just said, “Go to bed.”

Although Zhan Weiyang said he was tired, he didn’t fall asleep until Zhan Weiguang and Zhan Pengcheng came home.

Pei Qing heard him tossing and turning over repeatedly and asked him, “Why? Can’t sleep?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “Yes, I just can’t sleep.”

Pei Qing thought for a while and said, “You drank coffee in the afternoon.”

Zhan Weiyang suddenly reacted, “Yes, I drank coffee in the afternoon.” He suddenly remembered something, took out his mobile phone from under the pillow, and sent a message to Chen Youyou, saying, “Happy New Year.”

Chen Youyou didn’t reply to him; maybe he had gone to bed.

Zhan Weiyang put the phone back, and he remembered another thing and asked Pei Qing, “What did Qing jie say about you just now?”

Pei Qing was actually sleepy. He closed his eyes and said in a somewhat careless tone, “She saw me kissing you.”

Zhan Weiyang suddenly opened his eyes wide and asked in a low voice, “Really?”

Pei Qing suddenly felt curious about Zhan Weiyang’s state of mind and forced himself to ask, “Yes, do you think it’s bad if she saw it?”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t answer for a long time. After a while, he asked, “Why is it bad? Shouldn’t we let her see it?”

Pei Qing said, “Aren’t I asking you?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I don’t know, why are you asking me?”

Pei Qing felt speechless for a while.

Zhan Weiyang wasn’t completely clueless. He usually watched TV and read books, so he had basic common sense. He knew that his relationship with Pei Qing wasn’t something they could casually tell others about, which was why, up until then, he hadn’t even mentioned it to Chen Youyou.

But he couldn’t tell to what extent this couldn’t be said.

For example, if Pei Qing told him now that they would tell Zhan Pengcheng about this matter tomorrow, he would listen to Pei Qing because he believed in Pei Qing. As long as Pei Qing said it was okay, he would think it was okay.

As for what he would face after he said it, Zhan Weiyang could not consider it for the time being.

Because Pei Qing hadn’t spoken for a long time, Zhan Weiyang was curious. He leaned in front of Pei Qing and tried to see his face in the dark. He asked, “Are you upset?”

Pei Qing stretched out a hand to hold his waist, “I’m not upset.”

Zhan Weiyang thought about it seriously and said, “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being seen by her.” After that, he added uncertainly, “I guessed.”

Pei Qing couldn’t help laughing. He felt that he shouldn’t embarrass Zhan Weiyang, so he said, “Then there’s nothing wrong. You can go to sleep.”

Zhan Weiyang said aggrievedly, “I can’t sleep.”

Pei Qing stretched out his hand and pressed Zhan Weiyang’s head against his chest, whispering, “Did you hear it?”

Zhan Weiyang listened to the slight vibration of his chest when he spoke and his continuous slow and calm heartbeat, and he said, “Mmm.”

Pei Qing said to him, “You will want to sleep if you listen quietly for a while.”

Zhan Weiyang believed what Pei Qing said, so he lay quietly in front of Pei Qing and listened to his heartbeat quietly on his chest. He didn’t know how long he listened until he finally felt sleepy and fell asleep on Pei Qing’s chest.

The family was busy during the two days of the New Year, and time passed in a flash.

The next day was the third day of the New Year, and Pei Jingrong booked a flight ticket in the morning, so the family had to go to the airport early in the morning.

Pei Qing had talked to Zhan Weiyang repeatedly in the past two days and made enough psychological preparation for him to accept his temporary departure for a while.

But when the real day approached, Zhan Weiyang still felt very panicked.

Zhan Weiyang himself didn’t know what he was panicking about. On the night of the second day of the New Year, he took a shower and kept walking back and forth in the room.

When Pei Qing returned to the room, he saw him walking back and forth nervously, so he asked, “What’s wrong? Are you uncomfortable?”

Zhan Weiyang bit his finger and said, “I’m a little scared.”

“What are you afraid of?” Pei Qing asked him.

Zhan Weiyang wanted to say, “I’m afraid you won’t want me”, but he felt that he had said these words to Pei Qing, and it seemed unnecessary to repeat them over and over again, so he could only shake his head and say nothing.

Pei Qing said, “Did you take medicine at night?”

Zhan Weiyang nodded, “I took medicine.”

Pei Qing said, “Starting tomorrow, I will send you a message every day to remind you to take medicine.”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded again.

Even if Zhan Weiyang didn’t say it, Pei Qing could clearly feel his uneasiness, but Pei Qing had no way to resolve Zhan Weiyang’s uneasiness at present.

After all, he hadn’t graduated from college yet, and he didn’t have the ability to abandon his studies and move out of the house directly. He had too many things to consider, and it was impossible for him to ignore his own and Zhan Weiyang’s future just to comfort Zhan Weiyang’s emotions now.

So he could only try to comfort Zhan Weiyang.

Pei Qing took Zhan Weiyang’s hand and brought him to the bedside, asked him to sit down, squatted in front of him, raised his head and said, “I will definitely come back, so be a good boy and wait for me to pick you up, okay?”

       Zhan Weiyang didn’t speak.

Pei Qing asked, “What will it take for you to believe me?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I don’t know.”

Pei Qing thought for a moment and told him, “Next time I come back, I’ll tell your Dad about us, okay?”

Zhan Weiyang’s eyes widened immediately, “Is that okay?”

Pei Qing smiled and asked him, “Do you think it’s okay?”

Zhan Weiyang immediately said, “I think it’s very okay.”

Pei Qing nodded, “As long as you say yes, then you won’t be afraid of me abandoning you anymore, right?”

Zhan Weiyang’s eyes widened, and finally, he lowered his head and smiled secretly, saying, “It’s a deal.”

The next morning at 5:30, Pei Qing was awakened by the alarm clock. He reached out to turn off the alarm clock, turned around and heard Zhan Weiyang still sleeping soundly, so he didn’t turn on the light, and got out of bed and dressed quietly.

The luggage had been packed yesterday, and the suitcase was leaning against the door. Before he left the room, he gently touched Zhan Weiyang’s hair with his fingers, reluctant to wake him up, and then quietly left the room.

Coming out of the house, Pei Qing ran into Zhan Xueqing, who was also coming out of the room.

Zhan Xueqing was about to say something when he saw Zhan Pengcheng’s door open at the end of the corridor, so she turned around silently to wash and dragged her suitcase downstairs.

Pei Jingrong and Zhan Yingfei came over, and everyone had breakfast together. Then, Zhan Pengcheng drove them to the airport.

Before leaving, Zhan Pengcheng parked the car at the house’s door and asked them to put the suitcase in the trunk first. When he leaned over to clean the glass, he accidentally pressed the horn on the steering wheel, so a sharp horn sounded.

Zhan Weiyang was awakened at this time. He opened his eyes in a daze and found that the bed next to him was empty. He trembled and woke up completely.

He got out of bed and hurried to the window to look. He saw Zhan Pengcheng’s SUV parked at the door of his house. He saw Pei Jingrong open the passenger door and get in. He didn’t see anyone else, so he turned around and ran out of the room, not caring that he was only wearing thin pyjamas, and hurried downstairs.

Chapter 18

Time seemed to slow down, and the three-story staircase leading downstairs became lengthy, as if it would never end. Chu Yichen felt as if his strength had been drained; his steps were a little unsteady, and he could only hold on to the handrail tightly. He was used to being calm, used to being expressionless, used to being calm in times of crisis, but at this moment, maintaining these habits became so difficult.

With every step he took, his heart trembled. He was afraid—afraid that when he got downstairs, he would get a result that he couldn’t accept.

“He is still alive.” The four words Zhang Juan said made everyone breathe a sigh of relief at the same time. “Fortunately, there are soft shrubs and soil underneath. Judging from the current situation, there may be several fractures. As for whether the internal organs are damaged, I can’t say. I will take him for further examination.”

       Chu Yichen nodded slightly.

Other doctors there had already carefully put Chu Yunhan into the ambulance. Since there were always injuries and ailments that couldn’t be publicly addressed and needed to be treated in the Black Eagle Groups, the group had a private clinic with top-notch equipment in K City. Zhang Juan wanted to take Yunhan there.

“Do you… Want to go there together?” Dr. Zhang couldn’t help but ask when he saw Chu Yichen looking like this.

The man looked in the direction of the ambulance and shook his head.

Zhang Juan sighed, patted his shoulder, and said, “Don’t worry; I’m here.” Then he turned around and hurried away.

The car drove away, yet Chu Yichen still stood motionless.

On weekdays, he was like a clock that ran meticulously and accurately, not making any mistakes for a moment. But now, it was as if all his batteries had been exhausted, and it had completely stopped. He had lost all the ability to think calmly and process, and all that was left in his mind was Chu Yunhan’s expression before he jumped.

That tired and empty look became a freeze frame.

Chu Yunhan jumped so crisply, leaving no words behind.

When bidding farewell to this world, he didn’t want to say a word to him anymore.

There was a rumble of thunder in the distance. The sky, which had been hazy for a long time, finally started to drizzle. Fine water droplets fell from the sky, swayed by the wind, and fell reluctantly to the earth. Chu Yichen stood silently in the rain with his hands hanging down, the wounds on his fingers still oozing blood. Hei Yu tried to persuade him from the side, but he didn’t seem to hear it. He just stared blankly at the small patch of blood where Chu Yunhan fell, in a trance.

Hei Yu had no choice but to strictly order his subordinates not to leak any information about what happened today and let them disperse first. Du Chuan held an umbrella for Chu Yichen behind him. Bai Xiao hurried over after a while, as if he was about to say something, but was stopped by Hei Yu. The two talked in a low voice. When Bai Xiao learned what had just happened, he looked at the person standing in the rain in surprise, frowned and continued to discuss with Hei Yu.

The rain was getting heavier and heavier. Even though he was under an umbrella, raindrops still hit him diagonally. In the blink of an eye, his pants and shoes were wet. The small pool of blood on the ground also melted into the rain, getting lighter and lighter, finally disappearing as if it had never existed.

Chu Yichen finally made a move. He turned around and looked at Bai Xiao and said, “Speak up. How are things going?”

“Young master, two ships at the southeastern port have been detained. The cargo has all been declared, and there are no issues with it. However… four crates of smuggled endangered animals were found on those two ships. Both vessels belong to Wang Jin, and it appears he was transporting the goods secretly. He’s currently detained, and the police are awaiting our response,” Bai Xiao summarised the situation concisely.

“What you do yourself should be taken care of by yourself. Tell them to handle it by the book—there’s no need to give me any special treatment for something like this.”

“But… Wang Jin has many people under his command. He has always been very kind to the people below him, and he evenly distributes money, so he is quite popular. He is also considered one of the more capable among the fourth-level cadres. I am worried that unsympathetic to push him out will lead to dissatisfaction below.”

The man frowned and wanted to speak, but he felt a sudden dizziness. Everything in front of him instantly lost colour and then quickly fell into darkness. He staggered, and before he lost strength and fell, he heard Bai Xiao yelling.

“Young Master! Young Master! What’s wrong with you…”

       …

In the confined room, he was sitting in the corner covered in blood, looking up at the only small window high above. The light streaming through illuminated the dust floating in the air, and he seemed entranced—gazing at it with unwavering focus. Only when the heavy door creaked open did he tear his gaze away, shifting his eyes to the figure of his father as he entered.

“Do you regret it?” the man asked.

       He shook his head.

“In this position, there will be many times when you have to get blood on your hands. If you are as indecisive as you were this time, you will pay a higher price.”

He looked at the person lying in a pool of blood in the corner, lowered his eyes and said, “I understand.”

Three days ago, he was imprisoned in this secret room with this murderer who was responsible for several lives. The instruction the other party received was to kill him to survive. During the previous two and a half days, he had been trying to find a way for both of them to survive, but he was attacked several times, leaving him severely scarred. In the end, he cut the guy’s throat with the only knife he had during the hand-to-hand fight.

That was the first time he killed someone with his own hands. Walking out of the dark room with a strong smell of blood, he felt as if he had died once.

“The Young Master is looking for you.” The butler handed him the phone. He took it with his bloody hand, dialled the phone, and heard Chu Yunhan’s voice on the other end, “You finally called me back. Today is your birthday. How are you going to spend it?”

       “…I forgot.” he said.

“How can you forget? Then I have arranged a super cool party for you!”

“There are too many people, and it’s noisy.”

“Hey, you’re the boss today, and you have the final say. I’ll come and find you first, then we’ll decide. By the way, I’ve prepared the cake for you.”

“Okay.” After hanging up the phone, he said to Du Chuan, “Prepare clean clothes for me, something with a dark turtleneck and something that can cover the wound.”

       “Yes, Master.”

       “Take out the chessboard.”

       “Yes, Master.”

The day before his eighteenth birthday, he learned how to become ruthless from the cruel heir education. For more than three months after that, he was plagued by nightmares and woke up countless times in the middle of the night.

And every time he saw the photos Chu Yunhan posted on social networks, he unconsciously curled his lips.

Fortunately, I am the one who has to live with all this.

Fortunately, I am the one who needs to change.

       Fortunately…

       …

“Yichen…my dad is dying.” On the other end of the phone, his trembling voice was filled with tears.

“My mother took sleeping pills and is now in the hospital for emergency treatment… Yichen, what should I do…”

“Yichen… Can you call me back…”

When that person needed him the most, he was far away in City J, leading his team at a major project bidding event, unable even to receive the call. By the time he tried calling back, there was no answer. It wasn’t until the day before the funeral that he rushed back, only to be greeted by a broken-down Chu Yunhan.

       “I’m sorry, I…”

“You don’t need to kneel here.” Chu Yunhan’s tone was cold, without any intimacy.

From then on, Chu Yunhan never called him again.

His father began to entrust him with some things to do. When he first took over, he was very busy every day. He occasionally visited the person, but he was always turned away.

       …

       In the bar.

The man was lazily leaning on the sofa in the bar. He was holding the waitress in his right hand and shaking the wine glass at him in his left hand, “Long time no see Yichen, come and have a drink.” The dim, entrancing lights cast a mesmerising glow across that face, adding an almost seductive allure.

“Get out.” Chu Yichen looked at the woman with a cold face.

The escort stood up in a hurry but was yanked back into the man’s arms. “How amusing. The Chu family empire is vast enough for you to manage, yet now you’re here meddling with me as well?”

“Chu Yunhan, how long will you continue to indulge yourself like this?”

“What’s wrong? Is it because you think I’ve ruined the Chu Family’s reputation, or is it because you, Second Young Master Chu, dislike me?” Chu Yunhan raised his chin and sneered, “You haven’t even officially taken over as head of the family, and you’re already using me as your first example to establish authority?”

       “Come home with me.”

The man laughed, looked at him and said, “My father is dead, and my mother is in a nursing home. Where is the home you speak of?”

He was silent for a moment and said, “You still have me.”

“Ha.” Chu Yunhan laughed as if he heard a good joke and looked at him sideways, “Chu Yichen, who do you think you are?”

He turned and left. The bodyguards stepped forward and dragged the yelling young man into the car.

       …

“The Young Master injured the bodyguard and ran out. Do you need someone to bring him back?” Hei Yu came to report.

He turned his eyes from the book in his hand to the window, remained silent for a while, and said, “Let him go.” After a while, he added, “Send two people to follow him and protect him.”

       “Yes.” Hei Yu hesitated.

       “What’s wrong?”

“Eldest Young Master’s temperament has changed a lot, and he is getting more and more out of character. I’m worried…”

“That’s just his way of exiling himself. Let him be.”

       “Okay.”

       …

       Later.

“Yichen… I was caught by them… Please, help me…” Chu Yunhan’s voice trembled, helpless and heart-wrenching like the previous time.

“If you want to exchange his life, come to the warehouse by the sea and do it alone.” Grey Wolf’s voice was harsh and harsh.

“I will do it, provided you don’t hurt him.” He hung up the phone, turned and walked towards the door.

“Young Master!” Bai Xiao stopped him in his tracks, “You can’t go! How could the Grey Wolf catch the Eldest Young Master without any movement under our heavy protection? This is simply a trap. Have you ever thought that Eldest Young Master might…”

       He raised his eyes calmly.

Bai Xiao saw his expression and said in shock, “Young Master, you…”

“Even if there is a ninety-nine percent chance that he worked with the Grey Wolf to deceive me, as long as there is a one percent chance that he is in danger, I will go.”

       …

Grey Wolf smiled ferociously and told him that Chu Yunhan had lied to him. He fell to the ground covered in blood, and his only thought before closing his eyes was——

       Fortunately, the man is safe.

       Fortunately…

       …

       Chu Yichen opened his eyes.

       The room was very quiet.

The man standing by the window turned around when he heard the noise. He looked at him and said, “Are you awake?”

       “…Father.”

Chapter 72

Zhan Weiyang cried for a long time until his eyes were swollen. He asked Pei Qing worriedly, “You won’t leave me, will you?”

Pei Qing said softly, “How could that be?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “But you’re going to be away for so long.”

Pei Qing patted his back and asked, “But I can’t always be with you. What if I go on a business trip for work in the future, and my Yangyang is alone at home?”

Zhan Weiyang thought for a while and asked, “Can’t you take me with you?”

Pei Qing smiled and asked, “How can I take you with me? You’re so big, I can’t fit you in my pocket.”

Zhan Weiyang felt that he was right and felt very distressed.

Pei Qing comforted him, “Although I can’t take you with me at all times, I will miss you. We can also video chat. I will also bring you a gift when I come back, okay?”

       Zhan Weiyang reluctantly accepted it.

Pei Qing then asked, “Are you feeling better now?”

Zhan Weiyang did not answer but grabbed Pei Qing’s clothes tightly with one hand and asked, “Can you not leave?”

Pei Qing said, “If I can’t graduate and find a job, how can I support you in the future?”

Zhan Weiyang said seriously, “I can support you.”

Pei Qing smiled and said, “How can you support me? You don’t have a job yourself, and now you can’t even support yourself.”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I can go to work to support you.”

Pei Qing smiled and said nothing.

Zhan Weiyang looked up at him, “Why don’t you say anything? I’m serious, do you want to consider it?”

Pei Qing was still just smiling but didn’t say anything.

Zhan Weiyang wanted to break away from his arms and said anxiously, “Don’t you believe me?”

Pei Qing quickly hugged him tightly with his arms, pressed his head to prevent him from struggling, and said, “I believe you. I’m just very happy.”

“What are you happy about?” Zhan Weiyang asked in a muffled voice.

Pei Qing said, “I’m just happy that someone likes me so much and is even willing to work to support me.”

Zhan Weiyang stopped struggling and said, “Yes, I like you too much; I think you can consider it.”

Pei Qing smiled and said, “I will seriously consider it.”

After a while, Zhan Weiguang came up to call them and said that the party had started, and Grandma wanted everyone to go downstairs to watch it. So Pei Qing took Zhan Weiyang back to the first floor.

The Spring Festival Gala had already started. In addition to sitting around on the sofa watching TV, everyone also had a mahjong table next to them.

Zhan Weiguang invited Pei Qing to play mahjong, but Pei Qing said, “You guys play; I don’t want to play.”

Zhan Yingfei was originally watching the Spring Festival Gala with Grandma. Hearing this, he looked up and said to Pei Qing, “Xiao Qing, you accompany them. They don’t have enough people.”

Pei Qing agreed to sit down and sat down at the mahjong table to play mahjong with Zhan Weiguang and his second aunt Zhan Weiyang. Zhan Xiusong wanted to join the mahjong table but was stopped by the adults and replaced by Zhan Xueqing, who was not very willing.

Grandma sat on the sofa, patted the seat next to her, and said to Zhan Weiyang, “Yangyang, come and watch the gala with Grandma.”

Zhan Weiyang did not agree and walked to the dining room.

Next to the dining table, Zhan Pengcheng, Zhan Heming, and Pei Jingrong were still sitting together, smoking and chatting. The dining table had been cleaned up, and Auntie Luo was washing dishes in the kitchen.

Zhan Pengcheng obviously drank a lot of wine. Under the dim light of the restaurant, his whole face looked red. He saw Zhan Weiyang, waved his hand and said, “Come here, Yangyang.”

Zhan Weiyang walked to his side and smelled a bad smell of smoke and alcohol, and couldn’t help frowning.

Zhan Pengcheng grabbed Zhan Weiyang’s hand and asked him, “Is Yangyang full?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Yeah.”

Zhan Pengcheng leaned sideways, looked up at him, and asked, “Why did you leave halfway through just now?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “Because I was full.”

Zhan Pengcheng nodded, “I’ll ask Auntie Luo to cook some dumplings for everyone as a midnight snack later; you can eat some more.”

       Zhan Weiyang didn’t speak.

Zhan Pengcheng pulled him, “Do you want to sit with Dad?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I don’t want to.”

Zhan Pengcheng then let go of his hand and said, “Then go watch the party with Grandma.”

Zhan Weiyang left the dining table and returned to the living room. He did not sit on the sofa to watch the party but lifted a chair and put it next to Pei Qing, and sat down obediently to watch him play cards.

Zhan Xueqing raised her head and glanced at Zhan Weiyang.

Zhan Weiyang did not notice. He moved closer to look at the cards in front of Pei Qing and soon sat up straight again. He could not understand it; he just wanted to sit next to Pei Qing.

Pei Qing also seemed a bit nonchalant. He leaned in closer to Zhan Weiyang and asked, “Do you want to play?”

Before Zhan Weiyang answered, Zhan Weiguang said, “Don’t let him. He doesn’t know how to play.”

After that, Zhan Weiguang said to Zhan Weiyang, “Just sit there.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him unhappily, then bent his knees and raised both feet to step on the stool, hunched his back and hugged his legs to play with his mobile phone.

He sent a message to Chen Youyou: “Happy New Year.”

After a while, Chen Youyou replied to him: “Too early.”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t understand: “What do you mean too early?”

Chen Youyou replied: “It isn’t New Year’s Day yet. You have to send it after twelve o’clock.”

Zhan Weiyang had to type: “Okay.”

Then, he put the phone back in his jacket pocket and leaned his head on Pei Qing’s shoulder.

Zhan Weiguang looked at him with dissatisfaction, “Sit down properly. How can Qing ge play cards like this?”

Pei Qing said, “It’s okay, let him lean on.” Then, he adjusted the angle to make Zhan Weiyang lean on him more comfortably.

After a while, Zhan Pengcheng and the others came out of the dining room, and Pei Qing stood up and gave his seat to Zhan Heming.

Zhan Weiyang followed Pei Qing to sit next to the sofa, and the family chatted while watching the evening party.

At about ten o’clock, Auntie Luo went to cook a large plate of dumplings for everyone as a midnight snack. The people playing mahjong stopped and gathered around the coffee table to eat dumplings. When they finished eating, Grandma couldn’t stand it anymore and went back to her room, wrapped in her blanket, to sleep.

So Zhan Yingfei turned down the volume of the TV and turned off the lights in the living room, leaving only a small spotlight to illuminate the mahjong table.

Others were watching TV and chatting; Pei Qing and Zhan Weiyang sat in the corner, Zhan Weiyang was playing games with his mobile phone, and Pei Qing was watching next to him.

The surrounding light was dim, with only the fluorescent light from the TV screen shining on their faces. The sound of mahjong mixed with the sound of the TV and the voices of Zhan Pengcheng and the others was like a barrier separating this corner.

When it was almost twelve o’clock, Zhan Weiyang received a message from Chen Youyou, saying to him: “Remember to send me a Happy New Year at twelve o’clock.”

After reading the message, Zhan Weiyang did not reply to him immediately but looked up at Pei Qing and said, “The New Year is coming.”

       Pei Qing said ‘En’ softly.

Zhan Weiyang had experienced so many New Years since he was a child, and this year seemed to be particularly different for him.

He began to get a little excited and waited for the New Year with trepidation.

The countdown to the Spring Festival Gala on TV began, and those who should be chatting in the living room continued to chat, and those who were playing cards continued to play cards without being disrupted by the countdown.

Only Zhan Weiyang stopped. He looked up at Pei Qing with expectations in his eyes that he could not explain.

They were in the corner, and the people sitting on the sofa could not see them unless they turned their heads to look. And among the people at the mahjong table, only Zhan Xueqing was facing them.

Zhan Xueqing played cards carelessly all night. She didn’t want to play, but she would be even less in the mood to sit and watch TV if she didn’t play.

At this time, she heard the countdown on the TV, and she couldn’t help but look up in the direction of Pei Qing and the others.

On the TV, when the countdown to the New Year was about to reach one, Zhan Xueqing saw Pei Qing lower his head and kiss Zhan Weiyang’s lips very lightly and quickly and then whisper something.

Then Pei Qing raised his head, seemed to notice Zhan Xueqing’s sight, and looked at her calmly.

Zhan Xueqing fiddled with the cards in her hand, casually playing one. Her mind was completely blank.

Chapter 21

Qian Xiaoke admitted that his life was embarrassing from time to time, but he didn’t think it could be this embarrassing.

It was obviously a very idol drama plot, but it became funny and scary when it came to him.

Jiang Tongyan was lying on the ground, and he was lying on top of Jiang Tongyan.

His first reaction was: WTF! Did I hit his little brother?

Qian Xiaoke found that since the two met, he had to mourn for Jiang Tongyan’s ‘little brother’ from time to time, which was really… subtle.

“Chairman Jiang, are you okay?” Qian Xiaoke was concerned about him from the bottom of his heart.

Jiang Tongyan gritted his teeth and said, “You… Get off me now!”

“Okay, okay, right now, right now.” Qian Xiaoke turned over and rolled off Jiang Tongyan, lying on the carpet and looking at the person lying there, “Are you okay?”

Jiang Tongyan took a deep breath, reminding himself that murder was illegal.

“Qian Xiaoke!” Jiang Tongyan suddenly roared. He grabbed Qian Xiaoke’s wrists with both hands at lightning speed and pinned him down.

Qian Xiaoke was shocked: Is he going to force himself on me?

He was shocked but soon dispelled this concern because Jiang Tongyan couldn’t get hard and couldn’t r4p3 him, so there was no need to worry about it.

However, things were unpredictable; some stories didn’t have an ending, and no one knew where the plot would develop.

Just when Qian Xiaoke was thinking about it, he found that the bath towel around Jiang Tongyan’s waist had loosened because of the previous action. At this point, it was barely holding on and might as well not have been tied at all. Jiang Tongyan’s alluring figure was now completely exposed before Qian Xiaoke.

He had to admit that he looked really good.

       Everything about him was perfect.

Qian Xiaoke couldn’t help swallowing his saliva.

Jiang Tongyan, about to explode with anger, suddenly noticed the lustful glaze in Qian Xiaoke’s eyes. His emotions grew complicated.

“What are you looking at?” Jiang Tongyan said in a cold voice, “Stop drooling!”

Qian Xiaoke didn’t really want to look, but he couldn’t help it.

Although he thought Jiang Tongyan had a weird temper, a difficult personality, and a bad brain, his appearance was really impeccable. Whether he was wearing clothes or taking off clothes, he was in line with the image of his dream lover.

       It’s just a pity…

“What a pity…” Qian Xiaoke stared at him and couldn’t help swallowing his saliva.

As soon as he said, ‘what a pity’, Jiang Tongyan immediately felt sad and wronged. These three words were like a sharp knife piercing his heart.

       It hurt.

He really wanted to kill someone.

       Or, just commit suicide.

Jiang Tongyan closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and suddenly let go of Qian Xiaoke’s hand as if he had resigned to fate.

He sat aside and pulled a bath towel to cover himself, with dark clouds above his head, looking utterly defeated.

“It’s in my pants pocket,” he raised his hand to touch the cigarette on the table, lit it, and took a puff, “You can take it and go.”

Qian Xiaoke turned to him, watching him sitting there with his bare buttocks sadly smoking, and a feeling of pity rose in his heart.

The man in front of him, tall and handsome, was so fragile at this moment that he seemed to be broken at the touch.

       I felt pity for him!

Qian Xiaoke scooted forward a little. Jiang Tongyan looked at him with disdain and dodged to the side.

Jiang Tongyan dodged, and Qian Xiaoke scooted again.

Jiang Tongyan dodged, and Qian Xiaoke scooted.

In this way, Jiang Tongyan’s buttocks were rubbed hot by the carpet, and he was blocked in the corner by Qian Xiaoke.

“What on earth are you going to do?” Jiang Tongyan said impatiently, holding a cigarette in his mouth, “You’re not going to stop humiliating me, are you? I have my dignity too! This situation I’m in is partly your fault. I’m trying to be nice and not hold it against you, but don’t push your luck!”

“No.” Qian Xiaoke raised his hand and put his palm on Jiang Tongyan’s knee.

Jiang Tongyan frowned and looked at his hand on his knee, “I have mysophobia, please take it away.”

Qian Xiaoke not only did not take his hand away but also put the other hand on Jiang Tongyan’s other knee.

“Don’t you understand what I’m saying?”

“Chairman Jiang, I don’t think this is okay.”

“Yes, it’s not okay,” Jiang Tongyan said, “You finally figured it out? Then hurry up, jump off the building and die.”

Qian Xiaoke said seriously, “No, I can’t die yet, what will you do if I die?”

“…Friend, don’t think too highly of yourself. In my eyes, you’re less valuable than a sprig of cilantro.”

       “You like cilantro very much?”

What kind of logic was that? Jiang Tongyan couldn’t even muster the energy to retort, “I hate cilantro.”

       Qian Xiaoke rolled his eyes.

“Don’t change the subject, I’m serious.” Qian Xiaoke said, “Have you ever heard of this saying—whoever hung the bell on the tiger’s neck must untie it?”

       “No.”

“It means that whoever caused the trouble should clean up the mess.”

Jiang Tongyan was a little upset, “You mean, I’m the mess?”

Qian Xiaoke said ‘tsk’ and patted Jiang Tongyan’s knee, “Can you focus on the main point? People like you will definitely fail the college exams every year!”

“Can’t you speak properly without insulting someone?”

“You!” Qian Xiaoke was also annoyed. He pulled away the bath towel blocking Jiang Tongyan, “Let me treat you.”

Jiang Tongyan subconsciously covered his part, “Are you trying to mess with me?”

When he spoke, he had a cigarette in his mouth, and the ash just fell off and fell on his body.

       How to describe this moment?

Qian Xiaoke took a sharp intake of breath.

The reason why he had this reaction was because he thought that men smoking naked were very sexy.

Qian Xiaoke discussed this with Zhou Mo before, and Zhou Mo said, “You probably like scumbags.”

Zhou Mo told Qian Xiaoke, “A man who truly loves you should hold you and continue to be affectionate after sex instead of smoking with his bare ass. Most of those who only care about smoking after sex are scumbags!”

Although he said so, Qian Xiaoke still thinks that naked smoking men are very sexy.

Especially, the ash falls on the attractive muscles, this scenery was just…

       “Is your father Michelangelo?”

“My father is Michelangelo?!” Jiang Tongyan poked his forehead with his finger, “No. Who do you care who my father is? Does it have anything to do with you?”

Qian Xiaoke smiled and said, “Chairman Jiang, I’m serious; I’ll cure you.”

Jiang Tongyan looked into his smiling eyes. As much as he wanted to curse the little brat, he had to admit that the kid was really cute. He couldn’t bring himself to say anything harsh.

This was why being a sucker for a pretty face was so dangerous.

“Cure my ass.” Jiang Tongyan reached out to take the towel that was thrown aside, but Qian Xiaoke grabbed his wrist.

Qian Xiaoke said, “My mother taught me to be a responsible man since I was a child. Since I’m the one who caused this situation, I shouldn’t escape.”

Jiang Tongyan looked at him coldly, waiting to see what this kid was up to.

Qian Xiaoke said, “Let me touch you.”

       “Huh?”

“Anyway, you’re going to be here for another week. I’ll come and touch you every day.” Qian Xiaoke said, “Maybe it’s like a neck issue that requires physical therapy—there’s a treatment period. We both tried so hard to make it stand up before, maybe because the time was too short.”

Jiang Tongyan felt a chill on his spine, “What are you going to do to me?”

“I’ll give you a massage,” Qian Xiaoke said, “Let’s try it today. I’ll go by my feelings, and when I go back, I’ll look for study materials online. I will study more, and maybe it will work one time!”

As he said that, he really stretched out his sinful hand.

Jiang Tongyan, on the other hand, didn’t react at all. His back was against the wall, a cigarette in his hand, his eyes looking at Qian Xiaoke—colourful fireworks exploding in his mind.

Qian Xiaoke, “Is this much okay?”

       Jiang Tongyan: “It’s… okay.”

Chapter 17

Sleep was a haven for the exhausted body to resist harsh reality.

And dreams were hallucinations given by the brain that stubbornly refused to sleep.

In his dream, there was a spiral staircase winding down in endless circles, descending deep below. Chu Yunhan stood on a step, glancing up with a hint of confusion, yet he could not see the way back. Overhead was a circular patch of sky, hazy and gray, as if a heavy rain was imminent. He lingered there for a moment, dazed, before taking his first step downward. The steps felt cold beneath his bare feet. The spiral staircase seemed endless, but just as he was about to lose patience and stop, he realised he had finally reached the bottom.

At the bottom of the stairs was a door. A dusty gray wooden door, with mossy green patches crawling up the frame, stood alone at the center of the circular floor. The door was slightly ajar, and a sliver of white light shone through the crack. He reached out to push it, but the door suddenly vanished, and the light that hit him made him squint his eyes.

The sound of boiling water came to his ears.

The scene before him was all too familiar. In the kitchen, a middle-aged woman was making soup. She picked up some with a spoon, blew on it, took a sip, and smiled with satisfaction. She turned off the fire, filled two full bowls, and walked to the study carefully carrying them.

The tall man who was working at his desk raised his head and smiled at the person who came in. The young man reading a book on the side also raised his head.

“I made sweet soup, one bowl for each person.”

The young man stuck out his tongue, “…Mom, do you want to poison me and my father?”

“Ungrateful child, are you going to drink it or not?” she said with mock indignation. “This time, it really turned out well.”

“Not drinking it… Dad can have both bowls instead.”

“One bowl per person. If you don’t want to drink, don’t go out tonight.” The man said.

“Dad! I have something to do tonight!”

       “Then drink the soup.”

       “But I want to live…”

       “That’s not negotiable.”

“Is there no justice left?” He took the bowl helplessly, smelled it, picked up a spoonful and licked it tentatively with his tongue. He thought it was okay, so he took a big sip and immediately sprayed it out. “Mom, how much sugar did you put in? It’s crazy!”

“Is it very sweet? The rock sugar was all clumped up, and I thought I’d dissolve a bit of it in the soup. But then the whole chunk fell in, and it was too late to fish it out.” She pursed her lips, “I tasted it just now, and it seemed fine to me. You’re exaggerating.”

“It’s so sweet that I almost puke!”

She turned to the man with some frustration, “Is it really not delicious?”

“It tastes good.” The man drank it all night without changing his expression and said seriously, “Everything you make tastes good.”

“…Dad, has she tortured your taste buds to numbness?” The young man looked at him in disbelief.

The man ignored him and continued, “But from now on, just let the cook do these things. I will be worried about what to do if something happens.”

“Husband, you are the best…” She was so moved that she pounced on him like a puppy.

“Hey, hey, I’m still here. Can you choose a place where no one is around to show your affection?” The young man shook his head unbearably, put down the bowl and sneaked out.

“Where are you going? You’re not allowed to go to the bar.”

“Hey, it’s Yichen’s birthday today. I’m going to prepare a surprise for him.” The captured boy grinned.

“Come back before ten o’clock in the evening. Otherwise, your pocket money will be gone for the next month.”

“Got it. So annoying.” He pouted and walked out of the study, passing by Chu Yunhan who was standing by the door. His eyes were bright and clear, with the high spirits of a young man.

       He couldn’t see him.

Because it was all just fiction. In this way, his brain replayed a long-forgotten memory for him, turning him into a bystander at this moment.

His father, mother, and his younger self.

What was once an ordinary scene had become the deepest thought in his memory, making him cry in his dreams. He looked at his father and mother in the study, unable to get closer. He couldn’t move, and couldn’t speak. He could only watch everything turn into blurry smoke, and watch their silhouettes become blurred little by little until they disappear.

       The door appeared again.

He pushed away eagerly, but his father and mother were no longer there.

There was a drizzle in the slanting wind, and the raindrops fell on the pond, forming small water ripples that pushed away in circles. Under the corridor of the old house, the young man was sitting on the floor, staring at the chessboard with a frown on his face. After a long while, he sighed in annoyance. He then threw the white pieces in his hand back into the rattan chess jar, and rubbed his hands, “I should have known not to teach you Go, now I can’t beat you.”

“How about I give you a two-stone handicap?” The handsome young man sitting across from the chessboard smiled.

“No way. A real man takes his losses fair and square.” He leaned back on the cushion and said, “I prepared a grand birthday party for you, but you didn’t even show your face, and you hid here with the old man. Really… you are always so averse to fun. What will you do in the future?”

       “This is fine.”

“Okay, if you want any birthday present, I’ll prepare it for you.”

The man smiled, “No need, just play a few games with me.”

“…You’re easy to please. I’m too lazy to go back at night, so I’ll crash here tonight; my dad won’t complain. Up for some games later?”

       “Sure.”

What’s inside this door was that man.

Chu Yunhan looked at the young Chu Yichen and himself with compassion in his eyes. Which one was more hurtful, the irreversible past or the unsightly present?

The clock on the wall stopped ticking, its hands slowly turning counterclockwise. Flowers on the trees reversed from wilted back to bloom, shrinking to tiny buds and fresh leaves. The shadows shifted eastward, then vanished. Raindrops flew up into the sky, leaving no trace.

       Snow started to fall aimlessly.

The boy in the down jacket held the woman’s hand and walked forward. His foot slipped and the Transformer toy in his hand broke his arm. He lost his temper angrily, “I didn’t even want to come! Why make me come? What’s so special about some kid the Second Uncle picked up?”

The man who helped him up said angrily, “Brat! How can you talk like that!”

“I don’t want such a bastard to be my brother!” the boy shouted and ran away angrily. He almost bumped into people on the courtyard arch bridge.

He raised his eyes and met each other’s eyes.

       Another boy.

The boy had black hair and a fair face and wore a small suit. His expression was calm, studying him with a scrutinizing look. His eyes were dark as if hiding a hidden light, resembling the gem he’d gotten on his birthday.

       The boy was very beautiful.

       He was stunned.

His mother touched his head and said, “Idiot, this is your brother. Go over and say hello.”

He didn’t know why he was a little nervous, so he walked over slowly and held it in for a long time before asking, “Well… Do you like Transformers?”

The other party was slightly startled and then smiled. The gentle brows and eyes were like bringing a gentle breeze, making people feel beautiful.

       “Like it.”

       …

The world spun, toppled, and crumbled as if it had turned into a huge music box. The white snow in the sky was swaying, making it difficult to open one’s eyes.

       Chu Yunhan woke up.

There was still dampness in his eyes, and a small patch of wetness stained his pillow. An IV needle was inserted into his hand, and the cool scent of medicinal cream filled the room. The slightest movement awakened the pain along his back, his waist and abdomen sore and exhausted, with a dull ache on his lower body that was hard to describe. He felt as if he’d been broken apart and pieced back together, every part of him worn and numb.

He curled up and buried his head between his knees.

It was the safest position for him, yet he still felt so much fear.

The house he had lived in for a long time had now become a prison, trapping him inside with no way to escape. The person who once talked and laughed with him has now turned into a cruel existence, which frightened him.

Master and slave. In the shackles of this identity, he would no longer be an independent person from now on.

Chu Yichen did not break his promise.

He finally tasted the feeling of ‘having nothing’. He lost his identity, his freedom, his happiness, and ultimately himself.

If everything was gone, what was the meaning of living?

Chu Yunhan raised his head and looked out the window.

The sky was grey, probably because it had just rained, and was shrouded in a thin layer of mist.

He pulled out the needle and stood up, struggling to prop up his body with his legs. The dizziness and pain made him hold on to the bed for a while before he recovered. He walked to the window and pushed it open. The strong wind rushed in like a wave, blowing the soft hair on his forehead.

A flying bird chirped across the sky, and Chu Yunhan kept looking at it until he could no longer see it. He stepped on the stool and stood on the window sill, staring steadily at the direction in which the bird disappeared.

There was some noise behind him.

Chu Yunhan turned his head to look. His eyes met the person who walked in, and he trembled slightly. Then, for the first time in his life, he saw a look of panic on that usually calm and indifferent face.

“Chu Yunhan…” Chu Yichen stood stiffly on the spot, his voice seemed to be shaking, “What are you going to do…”

He looked at him, his lips moving as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he said nothing, only smiled faintly. He turned his head back toward the sky in the distance, lowered his lashes, closed his eyes, and let go of his grip on the windowsill, falling straight down. Like a bird leaving the nest, never to return, without a single look back.

At that moment, Chu Yichen, who rushed to the window and almost fell down, was hugged by the housekeeper who rushed up at the same time.

The cry of ‘Young Master!’ was almost shrill. The bodyguards and Hei Yu outside the door hurried over. They saw Du Chuan hugging the man tightly and shouting, “Call Dr. Zhang quickly, the Young Master… is down below.”

Hei Yu was equally stunned. After recovering, he quickly ordered someone to find Zhang Juan, while he stayed behind, looking worriedly at Chu Yichen, not knowing what to say, and softly called, “Master…”

Chu Yichen was hugged tightly by Du Chuan, like a body that had lost its soul. His gaze fell to the ground, and he stared at the window blankly. In his desperate grab for the window frame, his fingers had bled.

In his state, Hei Yu and Du Chuan did not dare to do anything and could only wait impatiently for news. They had followed Chu Yichen for many years and knew his obsession with Chu Yunhan, so they understood better what it meant to him once he lost Chu Yunhan.

The two looked at each other, each seeing anxiety in the other’s eyes.

       If that person died…

Then, this man before them might also…

Chapter 71

Even though Pei Qing said that, Zhan Weiyang still felt uneasy. He couldn’t understand how things had been fine in the morning, but by the afternoon, Pei Qing suddenly decided to leave.

Zhan Weiyang was a little flustered, but this kind of panic was not necessarily morbid. It might also be because he had just drunk coffee, and his heartbeat was a little erratic.

He began to think whether he had a way to keep Pei Qing and not let him go.

Zhan Weiyang had tried very hard, but his not-so-bright little head couldn’t come up with any good ideas.

When it got dark, the New Year’s Eve dinner officially began.

The sound of the TV in the living room outside was still ringing, and the dining table in the dining room was already filled with steaming hot meals.

The whole family sat around the dining table. Zhan Pengcheng first asked everyone to sit down, then took out the wine from the wine cabinet and enthusiastically poured it on everyone.

Zhan Weiyang was sent to sit at the small table, and he couldn’t help turning his head to look at Pei Qing.

Perhaps the action was too obvious, Zhan Weiguang, who was sitting next to him, said, “What are you doing?”

“Huh?” Zhan Weiyang looked at him.

Zhan Weiguang tapped the plate in front of him with chopsticks and said, “Just eat well. Why are you looking around?”

Zhan Weiyang whispered, “Don’t bother me.”

Zhan Xueqing sat opposite Zhan Weiyang. She had not spoken all night, but now she looked up at him.

Zhan Weiyang thought of Pei Qing’s departure again, and he had no appetite for food.

Zhan Xiusong sat next to him, quickly finishing the sweet and sour pork ribs on the plate in front of him. For him, today was New Year’s Eve, and this kind of New Year’s Day should give his body, which had worked hard to lose weight, a holiday, so he made an agreement with himself that he could eat as much as he wanted on the last day of this year and continue to lose weight next year.

Zhan Weiguang saw that the sweet and sour pork ribs on the plate were quickly finished, and he couldn’t help but stretch out his chopsticks to pick up one for Zhan Weiyang and put it in the bowl.

Zhan Weiyang’s attention was obviously not focused, and he didn’t react at all.

Zhan Weiguang said, “Isn’t it the sweet and sour spareribs you like?” In his impression, Zhan Weiyang likes all sweet and sour food.

Zhan Weiyang then looked down and said to Zhan Weiguang calmly, “Thank you.”

For some reason, Zhan Weiguang felt as if something had suddenly choked him. Unhappily, he said, “Eat it if you want; I don’t care.”

At this time, Zhan Weiyang turned his head to look at Pei Qing, who was sitting next to the big table. Pei Qing was toasting Zhan Pengcheng. He looked like an adult with an adult smile on his face.

Pei Jingrong said beside him, “Pei Qing has caused you too much trouble in the past six months.”

Zhan Pengcheng said, “No way. When I was away, it was Pei Qing who helped me take care of Yangyang and grandma. This glass of wine should be toasted to him.”

They drank the wine with mutual courtesy.

When Pei Qing sat down, Pei Jingrong said, “After the Chinese New Year, Pei Qing will go back with us.”

Zhan Pengcheng was a little surprised, “Is Pei Qing leaving too?”

Pei Jingrong did not answer for Pei Qing but just looked at him.

Pei Qing’s slender fingers were still holding the edge of the wine glass. He was silent for a while and said to Zhan Pengcheng, “Yes, my internship here has ended. I was supposed to return to school next semester to handle graduation and job matters, and with the New Year coming up, it’s also a good time to go back and see relatives and friends.”

       Zhan Pengcheng nodded, “That’s right.”

Zhan Weiyang kept looking at them without turning back. He heard Pei Qing’s words, and his disappointment and sadness were written on his face.

Zhan Xueqing, who was sitting opposite him, put down his chopsticks and looked at him.

Zhan Weiguang also noticed his expression and asked, “What’s wrong with you?”

Zhan Weiyang put down his chopsticks and said to Zhan Weiguang, “I don’t want to eat anymore.”

Zhan Weiguang frowned, “Why do you suddenly not want to eat? It’s Chinese New Year today, and there are so many guests at home, don’t be angry.”

Zhan Weiyang opened his mouth but couldn’t say anything. At this time, he realised that Zhan Xueqing was looking at him. Even Zhan Xiusong, who had never stopped eating, was looking at him while gnawing on chicken wings. He thought that what Zhan Weiguang said actually made sense. It was Chinese New Year at home today, and there were so many guests. It would be very rude for him not to eat well. So he picked up the chopsticks and the bowl and said listlessly, “Then I’ll eat.”

He looked at the dishes on the table and didn’t think there was anything he wanted to eat, so he took the bowl directly to the kitchen to add more rice for himself. He filled a full bowl, came back to the table, sat down, and showed his bowl to Zhan Weiguang.

Zhan Weiguang said, “What are you doing?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I’m eating.” After that, he really buried his head and started to use chopsticks to pick up the white rice in the bowl.

While eating, he thought carefully. What Pei Qing said actually made sense. He would always go back after the internship, and now that it was the Chinese New Year, he should go back to visit his grandmother too, right?

There was no reason for him to ask Pei Qing to stay, but when would Pei Qing come back after he left? Would he not see Pei Qing in the six months, or would Pei Qing stay there to work after graduation and would not come back after the past six months? Would he have to wait until next year’s New Year to see Pei Qing again?

Thinking of this, Zhan Weiyang felt scared at first, and then a wave of sadness came over his heart, and sad emotions kept coming up.

When Zhan Xiusong leaned over to get toilet paper to wipe the oil off his hands, his eyes suddenly caught something in Zhan Weiyang’s rice bowl. He turned his head to see and found that Zhan Weiyang was crying.

Zhan Weiyang continued to eat silently, crying silently. All his tears fell into his bowl and seeped into the snow-white and soft rice.

“Why are you crying?” Zhan Xiusong was puzzled.

Zhan Weiyang glanced at him and said nothing.

Zhan Weiguang’s attention was drawn to him. He pinched Zhan Weiyang’s face and asked him to turn around to face himself. He was stunned and asked, “What’s wrong with you?”

Zhan Weiyang lowered his eyes to look at his bowl. There was only a little rice left in it. He scooped all the rice into his mouth, chewed it hard, swallowed it, and asked Zhan Weiguang, “Can I leave?”

Zhan Weiguang still asked, “What’s wrong?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “Then I’ll leave first.” After that, he stood up and walked out of the dining room.

Zhan Pengcheng noticed it and called him loudly, “Yangyang!”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t answer and had already walked out of the dining room.

Zhan Pengcheng asked Zhan Weiguang, “What happened to your brother? Go and see!”

Zhan Weiguang put down his chopsticks and was about to get up when Pei Qing said, “I’ll go.”

After that, Pei Qing got up and left the dining room.

Zhan Pengcheng still felt uneasy. At this time, Zhan Yingfei persuaded him, “It’s okay. Pei Qing is a sensible child. Let him go and see. Don’t worry too much.”

After Zhan Weiyang came out of the dining room, he passed the living room and went up the stairs to the second floor. He stood at the stairs for a while, pushed open the balcony door and walked out.

The temperature outside was very low. He was only wearing a thin long-sleeved shirt and stood in a daze on the empty balcony.

The neighbourhood was quieter than usual, but from time to time, you could hear the sound from the dining room downstairs. It was the sound of the adults at home laughing and talking while eating and drinking. Then there was the faint sound of music coming from the single-family villa farther away.

Zhan Weiyang wasn’t actually thinking about anything. His mind was blank; he was just too sad and needed to catch his breath.

But soon, he heard footsteps coming out from inside, and then someone put a soft down jacket on his shoulders.

Pei Qing’s voice sounded, “Put on more clothes.”

Zhan Weiyang looked up and looked at him in the light of the street lamp.

Pei Qing chased up from downstairs, and when he saw Zhan Weiyang standing on the balcony, he immediately went back to the room to get him clothes. Now he grabbed Zhan Weiyang’s arm and put the sleeves of the down jacket on him like putting clothes on a child. When the clothes were put on, he carefully zipped them up and pulled them all the way to Zhan Weiyang’s chin.

Zhan Weiyang’s face still had traces of crying.

Pei Qing lifted his hand, wiped it with his fingers and asked, “Why did you cry?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “I’m sad.”

Pei Qing asked him, “Because I said I was leaving?”

Zhan Weiyang nodded, he pressed his chest with one hand, and said, “I feel so bad. What should I do?”

Pei Qing looked at him and found that Zhan Weiyang’s eyes began to redden again, and he looked like he was about to cry.

Perhaps it was the special night of family reunions and festive lights that stirred something deep within Pei Qing. He found himself recalling many people and events from his past—his parents’ cold war before their divorce, the awkwardness of suddenly having strangers become family after his father’s remarriage and even the confusion he felt during adolescence when he discovered his attraction to the same sex. He had faced all those emotions alone, enduring them on his own and believing that they didn’t matter. But did they really not matter?

Pei Qing looked down at Zhan Weiyang and smiled very lightly. Zhan Weiyang asked him, “Why are you smiling?”

Pei Qing said, “Do you want to cry? Do you want to cry for a while?”

       Zhan Weiyang asked, “Can I?”

       Pei Qing nodded, “Yes.”

Zhan Weiyang hugged Pei Qing’s waist, buried his face in his chest, and cried sadly. Pei Qing hugged Zhan Weiyang, patted his back gently, raised his head and felt the cold wind blowing on his face, but his eyes were slightly hot.
