The Capture Target Came Out Wrong

Chapter 49

After class, Chen Youyou noticed that Zhan Weiyang was daydreaming. It wasn’t just daydreaming; during the morning self-study session, when the teacher wasn’t in the classroom, Chen Youyou turned around to look at Zhan Weiyang a few times and found him smiling foolishly.

Actually, Chen Youyou wanted to tell Zhan Weiyang about the incident with Xie Ling yesterday. Although he gave the bicycle to Xie Ling yesterday, he felt a little guilty. Originally, he wanted Zhan Weiyang to give Xie Ling a ride. Then the two of them would get to know each other as Zhan Weiyang helped Xie Ling change the tyre. As it turned out, Zhan Weiyang ran away directly, and Xie Ling’s bicycle was still broken there without anyone to take care of it. The more Chen Youyou thought about it, the more embarrassed he felt.

He couldn’t help but want to urge Zhan Weiyang to help Xie Ling fix the bicycle, but he saw Zhan Weiyang in a daze all morning.

Before Chen Youyou had time to speak, a boy from the next class suddenly called Zhan Weiyang’s name at the back door of the classroom.

Zhan Weiyang suddenly came to his senses and turned his head to take a look. He stood up and walked towards the back door, curiously asked, “Is there anything wrong?”

The boy threw a bicycle key to him and said, “Xie Ling asked me to give it to you.”

Zhan Weiyang was puzzled. After taking the key, he found that it looked familiar. He thought about it and said, “Oh.”

       The boy had left.

Zhan Weiyang returned to his seat and asked Chen Youyou, “Isn’t this the bicycle key you lent me yesterday?”

       Chen Youyou said, “Yes.”

Zhan Weiyang asked him, “Why is it with Xie Ling?”

Chen Youyou did not answer directly but thought for a while and said, “Do you, want to accompany, him to fix the bike, the tyre?”

Zhan Weiyang suddenly remembered, “Oh right, his tyre is broken.”

Chen Youyou said, “Yeah. I, gave it, to him yesterday.”

Zhan Weiyang panicked, “What should I do? We broke it for him.”

Chen Youyou reached out and grabbed Zhan Weiyang’s shoulders, shaking him hard, “So you, must go to, accompany him, to fix it!”

He shook Zhan Weiyang so hard that he disturbed Zhan Weiyang’s deskmate. The little girl said impatiently, “Do you guys have a problem or something?”

Chen Youyou withdrew his hand and said to Zhan Weiyang, “You, can do, whatever you want.”

Zhan Weiyang was very distressed. Later in class, he kept thinking about this problem. When class was over, he pulled Chen Youyou and accompanied him to the bike shed, and the two found Xie Ling’s bike. They saw that the bike was still in there, and the rear tyre was still flat.

Chen Youyou squatted down and pinched the tyre.

Zhan Weiyang stood and thought seriously. After a long time, he said to Chen Youyou, “I have thought of a way.”

Chen Youyou looked at him incredulously.

After lunch at noon, Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou went outside the school to find a bicycle repairman. They used the excuse that their own bicycles were broken and they could not ride out, so they asked the guard to let the man in.

The repairman brought tools and new tyres. When changing the tyres, Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou squatted beside and watched.

Chen Youyou couldn’t help but be curious, “Isn’t this your chance to get close to Xie Ling?”

Zhan Weiyang supported his face with his hands and said, “I don’t understand why I should get close to Xie Ling.”

“Huh?” Chen Youyou was very confused.

Zhan Weiyang stared at the front and suddenly leaned close to Chen Youyou’s ear.

Chen Youyou immediately understood that something was to be said to him in secret, so he quickly moved closer and then heard Zhan Weiyang say, “I’m in love.” This was said sweetly and shyly.

“What?!” Chen Youyou stood up in shock and yelled so loudly that the repairman dropped all the tools in his hand.

Zhan Weiyang put his finger to his lips, “Shh—-“

Chen Youyou squatted down again, this time very close to Zhan Weiyang. The two of them were close to each other, almost pushing Zhan Weiyang down. The shock in his eyes had not yet subsided, and he asked, “Who is it?”

Zhan Weiyang hugged his knees with his arms and said, “It’s me.”

Chen Youyou said, “Nonsense! Who are, you with?”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him and refused to tell him.

Chen Youyou asked him, “You don’t like Xie Ling anymore?”

       Zhan Weiyang didn’t say anything.

Chen Youyou didn’t want to pursue this matter further. He was more interested in something else. He raised his hand and bumped Zhan Weiyang, “Who is it?” After saying that, he added, “Boy or girl?”

Zhan Weiyang still didn’t say anything.

Chen Youyou said, “You’re annoying.” Keeping people on edge!

Zhan Weiyang suddenly blushed. He raised his hand to cover his face and whispered to Chen Youyou, “I kissed him.”

This news was like a bolt from the blue for Chen Youyou. He hadn’t expected that at seventeen, he would still be a virgin while Zhan Weiyang would be the first to date and kiss someone. Chen Youyou’s tone became a bit sour as he asked, “Who is it?”

Zhan Weiyang smiled and shook his body left and right but didn’t say anything.

At this time, the repairman had already changed the bicycle tyre and stood up to pack up the tools.

Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou didn’t continue talking. The two of them sent the repairman out of the school and then returned to the classroom together.

Walking to the door of the classroom, Chen Youyou grabbed Zhan Weiyang, “What about Xie Ling?”

Zhan Weiyang’s expression suddenly became solemn.

Chen Youyou looked at his face, “W-what happened?”

Zhan Weiyang whispered, “There’s a lot that I gave up.”

“Huh?” Chen Youyou was confused all afternoon. He felt that Zhan Weiyang was leading him to run around, and he didn’t understand what had happened.

Zhan Weiyang’s tone became sad, “Chen Youyou.”

       Chen Youyou said, “What?”

Zhan Weiyang turned around and faced him, saying, “I dare not tell him, but I will tell you secretly, okay?”

       “Tell me, what?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I will become a tree in the future, and you have to come to see me often. I only have you as a friend.”

       Chen Youyou frowned.

Zhan Weiyang lowered his head and picked his fingers, “I know I shouldn’t do this, but I can’t help it.”

Chen Youyou felt puzzled all afternoon.

When school was over, the boarding students went to the cafeteria for dinner, and the day students went home, leaving Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou in the classroom.

Zhan Weiyang said to Chen Youyou, “I have a System.”

Chen Youyou’s face was full of confusion, “Huh?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I must court Xie Ling; otherwise, my points will be deducted. And when all the points are deducted, I will become a tree.”

Chen Youyou’s expression changed from incomprehension to disgust, and finally said, “Are you crazy?”

Zhan Weiyang was a little unhappy and said, “I’m not crazy. Can’t you listen to me carefully?”

       Chen Youyou said, “Then?”

Zhan Weiyang continued, “That’s it, but I have someone I like more now, I can’t play two boats, I can only choose one.”

Chen Youyou looked at him in confusion.

Zhan Weiyang said, “I hesitated for a long time. This is not an impulsive decision. Even if I have to become a tree in the end, I want to be…” He lowered his voice and finally whispered, “Be together.”

After that, he saw Chen Youyou staring at him without saying anything, so he said, “I only told this secret to you. You are my best friend.”

       Chen Youyou said, “So?”

Zhan Weiyang grabbed his hand: “If one day I become a tree, you can’t forget me.”

       Chen Youyou finally said, “Crazy.”

Chapter 48

Zhan Weiyang had a limited understanding of what kissing entailed. In the darkness, he opened his eyes wide, feeling Pei Qing’s lips against his. His first reaction was still to wonder what he should do next.

Then he heard Pei Qing’s voice, muffled against his lips, whispering, “Open your mouth.”

Zhan Weiyang was a little confused but opened his mouth obediently, and then he finally knew what kissing was.

At that moment, Zhan Weiyang first felt his scalp tingling. He couldn’t bear it. He subconsciously wanted to hide back and raised his hand to grab Pei Qing’s arm.

However, Pei Qing pressed his hand on the back of Zhan Weiyang’s neck and didn’t allow him to dodge at all.

Zhan Weiyang lost the strength to struggle. He tightened all ten fingers holding Pei Qing’s arm, and his fingertips turned slightly white due to the loss of blood. He breathed rapidly; his chest rose and fell violently, but there was not much room for movement, and he was pressed tightly against Pei Qing’s chest.

Soon, his eyebrows and eyes turned red, and tears gradually flashed in his eyes. His legs were so sore that he could not support his body, but Pei Qing was still holding his waist to let him stand.

He didn’t know how long it took before Pei Qing finally let go of Zhan Weiyang.

Zhan Weiyang looked up at him with a dull expression, and he didn’t come back to his senses for a long time.

Pei Qing raised his hand to touch Zhan Weiyang’s forehead and hair, and his fingers swept through his hair. He then bent down to pick up the meal box beside him and said, “Going home?”

Zhan Weiyang followed him back in a daze, and only when he walked to a well-lit area could he see the vivid red colour of his cheeks and lips.

When they returned home, there was no one in the living room on the first floor. Grandma and Auntie Luo stayed in their respective rooms and didn’t come out. Maybe Grandma had already fallen asleep at this time, and Auntie Luo was probably watching TV, leaving only a small light at the entrance.

They changed their shoes. Pei Qing carried the remaining dumplings into the kitchen and put them in the refrigerator. When he came out, he saw Zhan Weiyang still standing blankly under the ceiling light at the entrance.

He walked over and asked Zhan Weiyang, “What’s wrong?”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him, and his face turned redder.

Pei Qing lowered his voice when he spoke as if he was afraid of disturbing Grandma and Auntie Luo. He said to Zhan Weiyang, “Then let’s go upstairs.”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

The second floor was dark. Pei Qing walked in front, turned on the light in the corridor, then opened the bathroom door and said, “Go take a shower first.”

Zhan Weiyang stood against the wall in the corridor with his hands behind his back, picking his fingers nervously. He said, “Will you take a shower with me?”

Pei Qing had planned to go back to the room first, but stopped and leaned against the wall, asking him, “Why do we have to take a shower together?”

Zhan Weiyang blushed and said, “Do you want to kiss me again?”

Pei Qing asked, “Do you want me to kiss you again?”

Zhan Weiyang nodded quickly. Pei Qing crossed his arms and asked, “So Yangyang likes it?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Yes.”

Pei Qing asked, “How much do you like it?”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him with a pair of round eyes and said, “So much.”

Pei Qing put his hands down and walked slowly to him. This time, he did not hug Zhan Weiyang again but bent down slightly, put his hands behind his back, and kissed Zhan Weiyang’s lips again.

Zhan Weiyang was sensible, and he took the initiative to open his mouth to welcome the kiss.

After a while, when Zhan Weiyang sensed that Pei Qing was about to pull away, he reluctantly stood on tiptoe, leaning forward to follow him.

“Okay, okay,” Pei Qing said with a smile, holding Zhan Weiyang’s shoulders with both hands and saying, “Stop making trouble. Go take a shower, and go to bed after taking a shower. You have classes tomorrow.”

Zhan Weiyang asked again, “Then don’t you want to take a shower with me?”

Pei Qing shook her head, “I won’t take a shower with you.”

Zhan Weiyang felt a sense of regret. As he turned to leave, he remembered something and stopped to ask Pei Qing, “Then will you sleep with me?”

Pei Qing said, “I won’t sleep with you either.”

Zhan Weiyang showed a disappointed expression and said, “But you kissed me.”

Pei Qing hummed and said, “I kissed you, and then what?”

Zhan Weiyang blushed and said, “After the kiss, don’t you want to have sex with me?”

Pei Qing was silent for a while. He raised his hand and gently touched his lips. He looked at him for a long time before saying, “Didn’t you say that you can only have sex when you are 18 years old?”

Zhan Weiyang suddenly remembered, and he opened his mouth wide, “Yeah, I forgot.”

Pei Qing took his hand and led him to the bathroom door, “So you should take a shower.”

       Zhan Weiyang said dejectedly, “Oh.”

Pei Qing leaned against the door and looked at him for a while. When he turned to leave, he heard Zhan Weiyang call him again.

Zhan Weiyang blushed for the last time and said, “So it’s not okay to just take a shower without having sex?”

       Pei Qing said, “No.”

       Zhan Weiyang was obviously disappointed.

Pei Qing leaned close to his ear and whispered, “Because gege won’t be able to help it.” After that, he stepped away from Zhan Weiyang, touched his head and said, “Be good, go.”

Zhan Weiyang took a shower by himself. When he returned to his room after taking a shower, he looked in the direction of Pei Qing’s room when he closed the door. Seeing that his door was always closed, he had to close the door himself, go in, and sit down by the bed.

He sat cross-legged on the bed, thinking back to the kiss just now, and his face blushed again unconsciously. He then couldn’t help but smile.

He felt sweet and shy at the same time. Lying down on the bed, he hugged the neatly folded blanket and rolled twice to the foot of the bed, then rolled twice back to the head of the bed.

Earlier, when Pei Qing asked him how much he liked it, Zhan Weiyang felt that he hadn’t expressed it well enough. It should be so, so, so much—so much that he wanted to be with Pei Qing every day, to have Pei Qing kiss him every day.

When Zhan Weiyang rolled for the fifth time, his door was suddenly opened from the outside.

Zhan Weiyang looked up and saw Zhan Pengcheng standing at the door.

Zhan Pengcheng was still wearing a suit and tie. He had a tall figure and made the suit look very good on him. Seeing Zhan Weiyang rolling on the bed, he said in surprise, “I thought you were asleep.”

He usually knocked on the door before entering Zhan Weiyang’s room. Only at night, when he thought Zhan Weiyang was asleep, would he open the door and come in to see if Zhan Weiyang had closed the window and covered the quilt.

Zhan Weiyang turned over and sat up, facing Zhan Pengcheng, and said, “Ah.”

Zhan Pengcheng walked into the room, smelling of alcohol, and asked, “Why haven’t you slept yet?” He then walked to the window and lifted a corner of the curtain to see if it was closed.

Zhan Weiyang said, “I’ll be asleep soon.” After that, he asked, “Did Dad drink?”

Zhan Pengcheng walked to the bed and stopped, “Dad had to work and socialise, so he drank a little, but he didn’t get drunk.”

Zhan Weiyang hugged the quilt and nodded.

Zhan Pengcheng saw that his face was red and reached out to touch his forehead. He then asked, “You don’t have a cold, right?”

       Zhan Weiyang shook his head.

Zhan Pengcheng felt that his forehead was slightly sweaty and asked curiously, “Is it hot?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “A little bit.”

Zhan Pengcheng then went back to the window and opened it just a little. He then said, “Just to let some air in, don’t open it too wide. You don’t want to catch a cold at night.”

Zhan Weiyang sat on the bed without saying anything.

Zhan Pengcheng walked towards the door, “Then go to bed quickly. You have classes tomorrow. What day is tomorrow? You have classes, right?” Maybe because he was drunk, his mind was not very clear.

       Zhan Weiyang answered him, “Yes.”

Zhan Pengcheng walked to the door, left the door a crack after going out, poked his head in and said to Zhan Weiyang, “Yangyang, say goodnight to Dad.”

Zhan Weiyang obediently replied, “Goodnight, Dad.”

Zhan Pengcheng smiled and closed the door.

Chapter 47

Pei Qing did not answer Zhan Weiyang’s question immediately but continued to clean up his desk. He put all the used dishes into a plastic bag and threw them into the trash can. Then he came back to his seat, looked at Zhan Weiyang and asked him, “Why do you think so?”

Zhan Weiyang’s tone was full of nervousness and anxiety, “I don’t know, I guessed.”

Pei Qing said, “Why do you guess so?”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him silently for a while, lowered his head, and pinched his fingers nervously, “You said you would treat her to a meal.”

Pei Qing said, “Didn’t I treat you to a meal? I also treated you to a meal.”

Zhan Weiyang thought for a while and said, “She is a girl. And she just touched you.”

Pei Qing couldn’t help laughing but didn’t laugh out loud. He just asked, “How did she touch me?”

Zhan Weiyang reached out and touched Pei Qing’s chest with an unhappy face.

Pei Qing looked down and said, “My clothes are a little messy.”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t want to hear this and just insisted, “Then do you want to date her?”

Pei Qing finally smiled and said, “I’m not in love with her.”

Zhan Weiyang immediately looked intently at Pei Qing.

Pei Qing continued, “I’m not in love with her, and I won’t date other girls, okay?”

Zhan Weiyang’s eyes were already filled with joy, and he asked, “Really?”

Pei Qing nodded and smiled at him, “Really.”

Zhan Weiyang finally couldn’t help smiling, and looked at Pei Qing with his bright eyes without blinking.

Pei Qing raised one hand, gently placed it on his head, and asked him, “Are you happy?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded quickly.

Pei Qing asked again, “Why are you so happy?”

Zhan Weiyang smiled and said, “I don’t know either.”

Pei Qing asked, “Then, if you don’t want gege to date her… Tell me, who can I date?”

Zhan Weiyang almost blurted out ‘me’, but at the critical moment, he remembered that he couldn’t say that; the System would definitely deduct his points. So he held back and thought for a while to find a suitable way to express it, “Anyway, not with anyone else.”

Pei Qing asked, “Who is not someone else?”

       Zhan Weiyang didn’t say anything.

Pei Qing didn’t force him to ask and said to him, “Then you sit here and wait for me for a while. We’ll go back after I finish the last form, okay?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

Pei Qing returned his attention to the computer screen, opened the keyboard drawer and continued to complete his form.

Zhan Weiyang watched quietly from the side. After a while, he stood up and hugged Pei Qing from behind, put his face on his shoulder, and whispered, “Me.”

       Pei Qing asked him, “What?”

       Zhan Weiyang didn’t answer.

Pei Qing grabbed his hand, “You what?”

Zhan Weiyang still didn’t say anything.

Pei Qing clicked the mouse to save the form, then closed the document, reached out to turn off the computer screen, and said to Zhan Weiyang, “Let’s go. We’re going back.”

Zhan Weiyang looked up and asked, “Is it finished?”

In fact, it was not finished, but Pei Qing didn’t want to continue working now. He said, “Yes, the work is finished. Let’s go home.”

       Zhan Weiyang immediately said, “Okay.”

When they came out of the office building, it was already completely dark, and there were not many pedestrians around.

Pei Qing carried the box with the remaining dumplings in one hand, grabbed Zhan Weiyang’s wrist with the other hand, and pulled him towards the bus stop.

There were almost no passengers waiting for the bus next to the bus stop. There were only the two of them, standing in front of the station billboard with white lights on.

Pei Qing touched Zhan Weiyang’s hand and asked him, “Are you cold?”

       Zhan Weiyang shook his head.

The weather had been bad these days, so the temperature had dropped a lot. Zhan Weiyang wore a T-shirt over a light yellow sweater on the outside. Although it was a loose style, it still made him look thin.

Pei Qing raised his hand and unbuttoned his coat from the collar. He then took off his coat and put it on Zhan Weiyang’s back.

Zhan Weiyang looked at him and said, “I’m not cold.”

Pei Qing said, “Your hands are cold.”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “No.”

Pei Qing smiled and said nothing, looking down at him, and then flicked Zhan Weiyang’s forehead with his fingers.

Zhan Weiyang looked up and smiled shyly. He raised his hand to rub his forehead, then lowered his head and leaned closer to Pei Qing, rubbing his sleeve.

Pei Qing reached out and put his arm around Zhan Weiyang’s shoulders, applying a bit of force before finally letting go.

After the rush hour, the bus came a little slowly. They waited for almost five minutes before they got on this bus. After getting on, they saw that there were still many empty seats in the back row.

The two sat in the last row, and the seats next to them were empty. As long as the people in front didn’t look back, no one could see them.

After the bus started, Zhan Weiyang secretly leaned his head on Pei Qing’s shoulder. He moved very slowly, from leaning lightly at the beginning to completely relaxing his strength on Pei Qing’s shoulder. He didn’t feel the other party’s rejection, so he was completely relieved.

The lights were on inside the bus. When Zhan Weiyang looked at the window glass, he could see the shadows of himself and Pei Qing. Pei Qing’s reflection on the glass was his side face with a handsome and neat outline. He was looking forward quietly. Zhan Weiyang couldn’t understand the emotions in his eyes, but he felt very relieved and gentle.

So Zhan Weiyang hoped that this road could go on. If this bus had no end, he would always be so comfortable and happy to lean on Pei Qing.

After getting off the bus, the two walked home together. After entering the neighbourhood, the light became dim. Zhan Weiyang wore Pei Qing’s coat—the sleeves and the hem of which were wobbly. He walked happily with his head down.

Zhan Weiyang saw a corner of his home building from the bushes in the neighbourhood. He pulled Pei Qing and said, “Qing ge.”

Pei Qing stopped and asked him, “What’s wrong?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “Come with me, please.” After that, he pulled Pei Qing into a small path.

The path was lined with greenery on both sides. Apart from the occasional joggers and walkers in the early morning and evening, there were usually no people around. By this time, it was completely dark, and there were no streetlights nearby. The only faint light came from distant spotlights scattered across the grass, illuminating the area. The surroundings were completely deserted.

Zhan Weiyang took a deep breath, raised his hand to wrap around Pei Qing’s neck, and slowly leaned in, pouting his lips. He stopped just before his lips touched Pei Qing’s.

Pei Qing looked down at him and asked, “What?”

Zhan Weiyang showed him his mouth, “Mmm.”

Pei Qing was silent for a while. He raised one hand and pinched Zhan Weiyang’s mouth with his fingers.

Zhan Weiyang quickly broke free and said anxiously, “It’s not like that.”

Pei Qing asked him, “What is it then?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I learned it from someone.”

“Oh,” Pei Qing’s voice lowered a little, “Who did you learn it from?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Chen Youyou.”

Pei Qing continued to ask him, “Then how did he teach you?”

Zhan Weiyang suddenly felt embarrassed to use his fingers to show Pei Qing and said vaguely, “It’s like that…”

Pei Qing pinched his jaw with his hand, not allowing him to escape his sight, “What does that look like? You have to explain it gege clearly.”

Zhan Weiyang was very anxious, and he said, “You pout your lips.”

Pei Qing’s eyes were full of smiles, but it was a pity that the light around was too dim to see clearly. He asked Zhan Weiyang, “Why do you have to pout?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “If not, how can I kiss you?”

Pei Qing asked, “How exactly do you want to kiss?”

Zhan Weiyang then tried to pout his lips and put his lips to Pei Qing’s and started rubbing them clumsily.

Pei Qing dodged back, and Zhan Weiyang chased after him relentlessly. He was very upset with Pei Qing’s lack of cooperation, and he thought Pei Qing should also learn to kiss like him.

“Okay, okay,” Pei Qing had to stop him, stretched out his hand to grab Zhan Weiyang’s back collar and pulled him away from him, saying, “Do you really want to kiss?”

       Zhan Weiyang said seriously, “Yes.”

Pei Qing put the meal box he was carrying in his hand to the side, hugged Zhan Weiyang’s waist with one hand, and pressed his neck with the other hand. He then lowered his head to kiss him.

Chapter 46

The office lobby was empty, and there were no people. Zhan Weiyang stared earnestly in the direction of the elevator. Every time he saw an elevator going down to the first floor, he would open his eyes and look expectantly.

After waiting for about three minutes, he saw Pei Qing appear from the opened elevator door in a hurry and walked towards him quickly.

Pei Qing walked in front of Zhan Weiyang, bent down slightly, stretched out his hands to hold his arms, and asked, “Why are you here?”

Zhan Weiyang raised the plastic bag in his right hand a little higher and said, “I brought you dinner.”

Pei Qing looked down, smiled at Zhan Weiyang and said, “Such a good boy?”

Zhan Weiyang nodded and asked him, “Are you hungry?”

Pei Qing said, “I’m hungry. You came at the right time.”

Zhan Weiyang felt very happy immediately.

Pei Qing took his hand and led him to the elevator, saying, “Will you come with me?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Yes, yes!”

There were only two of them in the elevator. Zhan Weiyang moved his feet and moved closer to Pei Qing. He carefully moved his hand holding the dumplings away, fearing that it would touch Pei Qing.

Pei Qing naturally felt it and reached out to pat Zhan Weiyang on the back.

In the company where he was interning, there was no one else in the office; only a light was on above Pei Qing’s desk.

Pei Qing pushed a chair over and asked Zhan Weiyang to sit down first. Then, he sat next to him.

Zhan Weiyang looked at the computer in front of Pei Qing, which was full of tables and data, so he asked Pei Qing, “Will you work overtime until late?”

Pei Qing said, “No, I will be done soon.”

Actually, he was just an intern, and he was not required to complete these tasks today, but he didn’t want to stop his work after sorting out half of them, so he simply stayed to work overtime.

Zhan Weiyang put the plastic bag on the desk and asked quietly and expectantly, “Going to eat?”

       Pei Qing said: “Yes.”

He reached out to untie the plastic bag, took out the lunch box and chopsticks inside, and asked, “What did you bring?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Dumplings.”

Pei Qing opened a meal box and saw that it was filled with dumplings. There were about ten or twenty dumplings. There were four such boxes in total. He looked down and asked Zhan Weiyang, “Did you buy so many?”

Zhan Weiyang counted on his fingers and told him, “I bought corn and pork, tomato and beef, leek and egg, and cabbage and pork. I think they all taste great, and I want to share them with you.”

Pei Qing had no choice but to tidy up the items on the table. He opened all four lunch boxes and placed them neatly side by side. He then took out the vinegar packets and poured them into the lids of the boxes. Handing a pair of chopsticks to Zhan Weiyang, he asked, “Have you eaten?”

Zhan Weiyang took the chopsticks and lied, “Not yet.”

Pei Qing took another pair of chopsticks. He looked at the row of dumplings and asked Zhan Weiyang, “What filling do you want to eat?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “Corn and pork.”

The light was not very good, and Pei Qing could not easily tell which one was corn and pork. He picked one at random, picked it up, and put it to Zhan Weiyang’s lips, saying, “Smell it first. Is it corn and pork?”

Zhan Weiyang smelled it obediently, frowned and shook his head, “I can’t smell it.”

Pei Qing said, “Then take a bite and try it.”

Zhan Weiyang took a bite, chewed while looking at the remaining half of the dumpling, and said regretfully, “Oh, it’s cabbage and pork.”

Pei Qing said, “Cabbage and pork? Then I’ll eat it.” After that, he ate the remaining half of the dumpling himself and then asked Zhan Weiyang, “Which one do you want to eat next?”

Zhan Weiyang was overjoyed. He felt like Pei Qing was playing a fun game with him. He carefully examined the dumplings in the boxes, then secretly picked the one that seemed the least like the others, pointing at it, “This one.”

Pei Qing smiled, picked it up, and fed it to him, “Then try it?”

Zhan Weiyang then took a bite and said, “It’s tomato and beef.”

Pei Qing looked at him and said, “What should I do? It’s not corn and pork, so you can’t eat it.”

Zhan Weiyang smiled at him and said, “It’s okay, you eat it first.”

Pei Qing said, “I’ll eat it then?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “Wait a minute.” He made sure to use his chopsticks to hold the remaining half of the dumpling over, to feed Pei Qing.

Pei Qing cooperated and opened his mouth. Zhan Weiyang kept looking at him with bright eyes and waited until he finished eating the dumplings before asking, “Is it delicious?”

       Pei Qing nodded, “It’s delicious.”

Zhan Weiyang quickly said, “I think it’s delicious too.”

The two of them ate a few dumplings and suddenly heard someone knocking on the office door. Zhan Weiyang and Pei Qing turned their heads at the same time and saw a beautiful woman with long hair standing at the door wearing a long-sleeved sweater and a short black skirt.

Zhan Weiyang had also seen that woman once before—it was Qin Yishan who had dinner with Pei Qing last time.

Qin Yishan was stunned for a moment when he saw Zhan Weiyang but then smiled, “Younger cousin? Why are you here?”

Zhan Weiyang did not answer but just glanced at Pei Qing nervously.

Pei Qing stood up, smiled at Qin Yishan, and said, “He knew I was working overtime, so he brought me dinner.”

“So nice?” Qin Yishan smiled, walked towards them, and walked to the front of Pei Qing’s desk.

She looked down and saw the dumplings on the desk, and said, “So rich?” After that, she looked at Pei Qing and said, “I know you’re working overtime, and I wanted to invite you to dinner together.”

Pei Qing remained standing as he said to Qin Yishan, “Do you want to join us? I’ll order some takeout.”

As soon as he finished speaking, Zhan Weiyang couldn’t help but droop his mouth slightly, and his two round eyes blinked back and forth between the two of them.

Qin Yishan didn’t notice Zhan Weiyang’s expression, and she just smiled at Pei Qing, “Forget it, how could I impose.”

Pei Qing said, “Well, it’s a little shabby indeed. How about another day? I’ll treat you to a nice meal.”

Actually, Qin Yishan was a little surprised. She thought that with Pei Qing’s personality, she should invite him twice more. Of course, she didn’t mind eating takeout dumplings with Pei Qing. She just politely refused. If Pei Qing continued to invite her, she would have ordered some more takeout for everyone to eat together, but she didn’t expect Pei Qing to just say forget it.

She didn’t show these thoughts on her face. She just smiled and said, “Then you guys eat slowly. I’ll leave first.” Pei Qing accompany her to the door of the office.

Qin Yishan stopped and asked Pei Qing, “So when is your other day going to be?”

Pei Qing replied, “When are you free?”

Qin Yishan said, “Why not tomorrow?”

Zhan Weiyang waited for Pei Qing’s answer with some trepidation, and then he heard Pei Qing say, “Okay.” His tone was relaxed and natural.

Qin Yishan smiled and lowered her head. Her long curly hair slid down from her shoulders and covered half of her face. When she turned to leave, she suddenly raised her hand and helped Pei Qing to tidy up the collar of her coat before saying, “I’m leaving.” Then she leaned over and waved to Zhan Weiyang, saying, “Little younger cousin, Sister is leaving.”

Zhan Weiyang’s tone was not very energetic, but he said politely, “Goodbye.” When Qin Yishan really left, Pei Qing came back and sat down next to the desk. Seeing Zhan Weiyang’s depressed look, he asked, “What’s wrong?”

       Zhan Weiyang didn’t say anything.

Pei Qing approached the remaining two boxes of dumplings, smelled the smell, picked up the corn and pork ones, picked them up and fed them to Zhan Weiyang, “Corn and pork.”

Zhan Weiyang lowered his head to look at the dumplings for a while, opened his mouth and ate them.

Pei Qing waited patiently for him to finish eating and picked up the second one for him. This time, when he fed it to his mouth, he heard him say, “I don’t want to eat anymore.”

“Why?” Pei Qing looked at his expression.

Zhan Weiyang looked a little sad and said, “I’ve had dinner.”

Pei Qing put the dumplings back into the lunch box and asked him, “Didn’t you say you didn’t eat yet?”

Zhan Weiyang lowered his head and blinked, “I lied to you.”

Pei Qing asked again, “You really won’t eat any?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “No.”

Pei Qing said to him, “Then shall I eat the rest?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

Pei Qing reached out and touched his head and started eating the remaining dumplings.

Zhan Weiyang looked up at him without saying a word, sitting quietly and motionless for a long time. It wasn’t until Pei Qing couldn’t finish the remaining dumplings and packed them into the box to take home that Zhan Weiyang mustered the energy to ask, “Are you going to have dinner with that sister tomorrow?”

Pei Qing looked at him and said, “Yes.”

Zhan Weiyang asked again, “Then you won’t come back for dinner?”

Pei Qing said, “Not necessarily; maybe I’ll just have lunch with that sister.” Zhan Weiyang bit his lip, encouraged himself in his heart for a while, raised his head and asked, “Are you going to date her?”

The author has something to say:
I also think that the daily update is a bit short, mainly because I come back from work and start typing after a busy day. It’s hard to concentrate on writing three or four thousand words. When I used to update more than three thousand words a day, it was hard to maintain the quality of the article in the later chapters, and I would feel very tired. So now I slow down the pace and maintain this number of words and state. If you find that one chapter’s content isn’t enough, feel free to stockpile the chapters. I don’t mind at all…

Chapter 45

By the time school ended in the afternoon, Chen Youyou had indeed borrowed a bicycle for Zhan Weiyang. The two of them hid not far from the bike shed, waiting for Xie Ling to come and get his bike.

Zhan Weiyang was a little nervous. In addition to being afraid of Xie Ling, he was more nervous after doing something bad. He sat on the bicycle, stepped on the ground with both feet and repeatedly squeezed the bicycle brakes nervously.

Chen Youyou stood next to him, raised one hand and put it on his shoulder, carefully observing Xie Ling’s actions.

When Xie Ling walked into the bike shed, he initially didn’t notice that his tire was flat. He unlocked the bike, got on, and tried to ride it out, only then realising something was wrong.

Chen Youyou pushed Zhan Weiyang at this time and said, “Go quickly.”

Zhan Weiyang took a deep breath and rode the bicycle in front of Xie Ling. He looked at him and was so scared that he couldn’t speak for a while.

Xie Ling didn’t look at him at all but just squatted down to check his tyre.

Zhan Weiyang’s eyes fell on Xie Ling’s tyre, compared the front and rear wheels, and found that the traces of artificially pulling out the valve core were clearly visible.

At this time, Xie Ling looked up at him.

Zhan Weiyang instantly felt that he had been discovered by Xie Ling. His face turned pale. Without saying anything, he pedalled hard with both feet and rode forward.

Chen Youyou, who was hiding next to him, saw this and called him strangely, “Hey!”

Zhan Weiyang ignored him and rode his bike all the way. Chen Youyou chased him from behind until he reached the school gate and saw Zhan Weiyang standing on the roadside, holding his bike in a daze.

Chen Youyou ran over, panting. He put one hand on the bicycle seat and asked him incoherently, “You, what are you running for?”

Zhan Weiyang’s face was still pale. He lowered his voice, leaned into Chen Youyou’s ear, and said, “I think he found out.”

Chen Youyou said, “He, doesn’t have, any evidence! Just, volunteer to, help him, fix the bike.”

Zhan Weiyang shook his head in a daze.

Chen Youyou couldn’t help but worry, “What’s wrong with you?”

Zhan Weiyang still shook his head. He suddenly pushed the bike to Chen Youyou and said, “I’m leaving. You go take him home.”

Chen Youyou was stunned, “Why should I take him home?”

Zhan Weiyang seemed not to hear him. He waved his hand and walked towards the bus stop.

Chen Youyou called out to him a couple more times, but Zhan Weiyang didn’t stop. He thought Zhan Weiyang must be crazy to tell him to take Xie Ling home. He just rode a short distance and suddenly felt guilty about the whole situation. He turned around and saw Xie Ling walking out of the school, not even pushing his bike but heading straight to find a shared bike. He gritted his teeth, rode up to Xie Ling, pushed his bike towards him, and said, “B-borrow this, and return it to, Zhan Weiyang tomorrow.” Then, he quickly ran off.

Zhan Weiyang took the bus home. When he got home, Auntie Luo and his grandmother both cordially invited him to eat, but he didn’t see Pei Qing at home.

He sat down, picked up the rice bowl, and asked, “Where is Qing ge?”

Auntie Luo said, “He said he has to work overtime at the company tonight and won’t be back for dinner.”

Zhan Weiyang said, “Oh.” He began to eat silently, poking his chopsticks in the bowl, picking up a few grains of rice and putting them into his mouth, and he always looked a bit listless.

Halfway through the meal, Zhan Weiyang asked Auntie Luo, “Where does Qing ge work?”

Auntie Luo said, “I don’t know, you can send him a message yourself.”

“Never mind,” Zhan Weiyang said in a depressed mood, “Then how late does he have to work?”

Auntie Luo said, “I don’t know.”

Zhan Weiyang was even more depressed.

At this time, Grandma suddenly said, “Yangyang, ask Grandma. Grandma knows where Qing ge works.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at Grandma quickly, “Grandma know?”

Grandma stood up before she finished her meal.

Auntie Luo said beside her, “Why are you in such a hurry? Let’s talk after dinner.”

Grandma said, “Seeing as my Yangyang is in such a hurry, I’ll go find it for him now.” Grandma staggered out of the dining room, and Zhan Weiyang followed her. He helped her walk into the room, watching her rummaging in the small drawer of the bedside table and found a small notebook.

“Here is the company where your Qing ge works,” said Grandma.

This address was left by Pei Qing to Grandma after Zhan Pengcheng went on a business trip. He said that if there was something urgent at home and she needed to find him and couldn’t get in touch with him by phone, she could go to the company where he was interning.

Zhan Weiyang took a picture of the address with his mobile phone.

Grandma asked him, “Are you going to find Qing ge?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

Grandma said, “Then bring him some food. This kid must have no time to eat dinner because he’s working overtime.”

Zhan Weiyang thought for a moment and said, “I’ll go buy it over there.”

Grandma nodded, “That’s good too. Otherwise, Yangyang wouldn’t be able to carry it if it were too far.”

Zhan Weiyang helped Grandma back to the dining table and sat down. He ate half a bowl of rice absentmindedly, put down his chopsticks and said, “I’m leaving.”

Grandma said to him, “Be careful on the road.”

Zhan Weiyang trotted out of the house and walked to the gate of the neighbourhood. He searched for the address of Pei Qing’s internship company on his mobile phone and then walked to the bus stop to take the bus.

When sitting on the bus, Zhan Weiyang stared out the window in a daze. He had been in a bit of a trance ever since the System inside his head had started appearing again halfway through the second half of the National Day.

He tried hard to think about what he should do, but the more he thought about it, the less he seemed able to find a definite answer. Instead, it only made his mind more confused.

So he wanted to see Pei Qing very much. Only when he was with Pei Qing did his chaotic thoughts become a little simpler, and he could forget many meaningless things.

Meaningful? What can be considered as meaningful? Zhan Weiyang thought.

He sat in the back row of the bus, raised both hands and imitated Chen Youyou by pressing his fingertips together and rubbing them lightly.

Zhan Weiyang liked the feeling of kissing Pei Qing very much. He would immerse himself in it, so that his mind would be empty, and he would always feel happy.

After the National Day, the temperature had completely dropped, and there was no trace of summer. The sky was darker than before.

The weather had been bad for several days in a row, and it was gloomy in the evening. The street lights on the roadside were all orange-yellow in colour, shining down from high above through the grids of car windows, standing on people’s faces, and reflecting Zhan Weiyang’s fair face into a warm orange.

Arriving at the station near Pei Qing’s internship company, Zhan Weiyang got off the bus and walked slowly along the roadside.

There was a cake shop on the roadside. There were beautiful cakes in the glass window. There was a mirror behind the cake display cabinet.

Zhan Weiyang stopped and looked at himself in the mirror. Suddenly, he felt strange.

The boy in the mirror was tall and thin, clean and fair. His eyes were clear but not bright enough as if they were hazy and covered with a layer of fog. He had seen this face since he was a child, but for some reason, he always felt that he was not like himself at this time. But if it was not himself, who could it be?

The top layer of the display cabinet was a birthday cake. It featured houses, dwarves, and green trees. Zhan Weiyang’s eyes fell on the tree, and he was in a daze for a long time until a car passed by behind him and honked.

The horn sounded very sharp and sobered him up. He turned around nervously and saw pedestrians passing by hurriedly or leisurely on the street. Then he remembered that he was looking for Pei Qing, so he continued to walk forward.

He asked the owner of a dumpling restaurant to pack several dumplings because he wanted to try every flavour. After packing them, he felt that it was too much.

Zhan Weiyang walked into the company’s office building and called Pei Qing in the lobby.

The phone was picked up quickly, and Pei Qing’s tone was a little surprised, “Yangyang? What’s wrong?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “Which floor are you on? I brought you dinner.”

Pei Qing was obviously stunned and asked him, “Where are you?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I’m on the first floor.”

Pei Qing immediately said, “Wait for me there.” Then he hung up the phone.

Chapter 44

A few days after the National Day holiday, it started to become rainy and gloomy. Everyone seemed preoccupied and unhappy, spending their days at home gloomily watching the dark sky and wet ground outside.

Zhan Xiusong said that his glasses were broken and he had to go back to get a new pair of glasses, so he left early. Not long after, Zhan Weiguang also went back to school. The house, which had been lively for a few days, became cold and quiet again.

After a short break, Zhan Pengcheng became busy at work and started to go out early and come back late. Often when he returned home, Zhan Weiyang was already asleep, as if everything had returned to the time before the National Day, but Zhan Weiyang did not sleep in Pei Qing’s bedroom again.

Sometimes when Zhan Pengcheng came back from outside, he would go to Zhan Weiyang’s room first. If it were still early, he would chat with him for a few words. If it were late, he would also check whether Zhan Weiyang’s quilt was covered and then gently close the door and go back to his room.

After the National Day holiday, Zhan Weiyang started school.

Usually, he was quite happy when he thought about the start of school; after all, he could see Chen Youyou at school, unlike at home, where he could only see Zhan Weiguang every day. However, at the start of school this time, he was not very happy.

On the first day of class, Zhan Weiyang arrived at school earlier than Chen Youyou. He sat in his seat, and opened the book to be read for morning self-study and spread it on the table. He was a little absent-minded and didn’t even realise when Chen Youyou entered the classroom. When he realised, morning self-study had already started. Chen Youyou sat in front of him with his back to him as if he was reading a book seriously.

He waited until the end of get out of class, Chen Youyou turned around and asked him, “W-why did you, ignore me just, now?”

Zhan Weiyang found it strange, “When?”

Chen Youyou said, “Just, before morning self, study.”

Zhan Weiyang said. “You didn’t talk to me.”

Chen Youyou was not very happy, “I did.”

Zhan Weiyang said to him, “Sorry, I didn’t hear it.” Then he lay listlessly on the table.

In the morning, there was a school-wide assembly. The principal spoke from the stage at the front of the playground, addressing issues such as the importance of maintaining discipline after the long holiday. However, none of the students below were paying serious attention to his speech.

Later, after the speech, the principal said that Xie Ling, a first-year student in the school, had won a scholarship in the city. His tone was full of pride, and he was eager to call Xie Ling to the stage to accept the congratulations of all the students in the school.

Chen Youyou glanced at Zhan Weiyang but saw that he was still not angry, and his gaze did not even fall on the podium.

He felt strange in his heart. After the school-wide assembly, on the way back to the classroom with Zhan Weiyang, he asked Zhan Weiyang, “You don’t, plan to continue to pursue, Xie Ling?”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t hear what he said clearly, and asked, “What?”

Chen Youyou leaned close to his ear and shouted, “Xie Ling!”

Zhan Weiyang was startled and said, “Why are you so loud?”

Several girls passing by turned their heads to look at them and then walked past them with laughter.

Chen Youyou said, “You, gave up?”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t say anything. He looked ahead with a depressed look.

At lunchtime, Chen Youyou and Zhan Weiyang sat in a corner. He ate rice with a spoon and asked Zhan Weiyang, “W-what on earth, is going on?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I don’t know.” After that, he stared at the front in a daze and even forgot to eat.

Chen Youyou raised his hand and waved it in front of him, “Are you, do you not, like Xie Ling?”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him, unsure if he dared to answer the question casually.

Chen Youyou had a puzzled expression on his face.

Zhan Weiyang suddenly leaned forward as if he had something to say to Chen Youyou.

Chen Youyou immediately leaned forward and took the initiative to turn his ear to listen to what he said.

In the end, Zhan Weiyang said, “What do you think I should do after I’ve pursued after Xie Ling?”

Chen Youyou was puzzled, “Do, what? D-date him.”

Zhan Weiyang moved his mouth, wanting to say something but not saying it.

Chen Youyou hadn’t finished his meal yet, so he urged him impatiently, “So you, what are you, going to say?”

Zhan Weiyang whispered again, “Can I not date him?”

Chen Youyou was stunned, “What the hell, was wrong with you?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I’ll just pursue him.”

       “T-then what?”

       “That’s it, no dating.”

“What are, you trying to do? Challenging the, arrogant male, junior? Wow, I-I didn’t realize for so long that you’re actually such a scum, scumbag!” Chen Youyou had too much to say, and he got more and more anxious as he spoke.

Zhan Weiyang asked curiously, “What is a scumbag?”

Chen Youyou blushed and said, “Just, it means you are a jerk, who plays and messes with other’s feelings.”

Zhan Weiyang said quickly, “I’m not, don’t be angry.”

Chen Youyou wanted to pinch his thigh to make himself speak more smoothly, “I’m not angry, I just feel very excited.”

“What’s exciting?” Zhan Weiyang didn’t understand.

Chen Youyou said, “When you catch him, dump him immediately. Even if he kneels down and begs you, don’t a-agree.”

Zhan Weiyang imagined the scene and felt a little difficult. He said, “I don’t think he will.”

Chen Youyou said, “Make, him fall in love, with you.”

Zhan Weiyang said distressedly, “It’s too difficult.”

Chen Youyou stretched out his hand and grabbed his face, twisting it hard.

Zhan Weiyang hurriedly stretched out his hand to push his hand and said, “Ah, it hurts.”

Chen Youyou then let go and said with a look of regret, “W-why don’t, you try at all!”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him innocently and helplessly.

Chen Youyou threw the spoon into the plate, thinking seriously, and said, “How about this, we will deflate Xie Ling’s tyres later, and you, ride a bike with him.”

Zhan Weiyang was afraid, “I won’t go.”

Chen Youyou said angrily, “Don’t you, still want to pursue him?”

Zhan Weiyang did not answer. In fact, he had been thinking about this problem for several days. He was reluctant to turn into a tree so quickly. He still had to wait for Pei Qing to be willing to teach him another way of kissing. He indeed felt he should work hard to improve his score.

According to the System’s requirements, he should actively pursue Xie Ling, but he had not taken action for a long time.

On the one hand, he did not want to get close to Xie Ling, fearing that he would provoke the System’s reaction. On the other hand, he seemed to have to get close to Xie Ling so that the System would not deduct all his points.

After struggling for a while, Zhan Weiyang said to Chen Youyou, “But I don’t have a bicycle either.” He was still subconsciously looking for an excuse to refuse.

Chen Youyou said, “I, I will lend mine, to you.”

Worried that classes would end too late in the afternoon, they went to deflate Xie Ling’s bicycle tyre at the end of the second class.

The two of them were sneaking around in the bike shed. When Zhan Weiyang saw Chen Youyou pulling out the valve core, he worriedly asked, “Is this difficult to fix?”

Chen Youyou said, “I don’t know.” After a pause, he said, “Who cares.”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

Chen Youyou looked up at him and said, “If you, don’t feel good, just accompany him, to fix the tyre and, get closer to him.” After that, he successfully deflated the rear tyre of Xie Ling’s bicycle. When he stood up, he said, “Isn’t he, poor? If you are more generous, he might, be a little, moved.”

       “Really?” Zhan Weiyang asked absentmindedly.

Chen Youyou didn’t notice his absent-mindedness, and he really didn’t know what was going on, so he could only say, “I guess so.”

       Zhan Weiyang looked at him.

Chen Youyou felt that Zhan Weiyang’s eyes were strange.

After a while, Zhan Weiyang leaned close to his ear and whispered, “Do you know how to kiss?”

Chen Youyou had never kissed anyone before, but at this time, he certainly couldn’t show weakness in front of Zhan Weiyang and immediately said, “Of course, I know.”

Zhan Weiyang was very confused, “Isn’t it done by just sticking it on?”

       Chen Youyou said, “Huh?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “What else is there to do?”

Chen Youyou suddenly felt embarrassed and asked with red ears, “You, do you mean, the kind of intense ones?”

Zhan Weiyang had never seen intense ones on TV, so he asked, “How intense?”

Chen Youyou raised both hands, pinched his fingers together, pointed the left and right fingertips, and rubbed them back and forth intensely.

Zhan Weiyang suddenly realised, “Oh! I know.”

Chen Youyou was puzzled: How did he know? What the heck did he know?

Notes:
After thinking about it a lot, I decided to change the title translation. I thought about it a lot too when I first translated the story but ended up understanding the context wrong. Instead of the capture target that was wrong, I thought it’s the system that is wrong
Sorry for the confusion ><

Chapter 43

Pei Qing walked into the room and reached out to gently close the door before continuing towards the window.

Zhan Weiyang remained in the position of kneeling by the bed but straightened his back. His red, tearful eyes, along with his head, followed Pei Qing’s movements.

Until Pei Qing walked to the bed and sat down, stretched out a hand to Zhan Weiyang, and said, “Come on, Yangyang, get up.”

Zhan Weiyang raised his hand and placed it on Pei Qing’s palm. Then, he was pulled up from the ground and stood in front of Pei Qing.

       “Yangyang—”

Before Pei Qing finished speaking, Zhan Weiyang lifted his legs and sat on Pei Qing’s legs, hugged him tightly, and whispered, “Qing ge.”

Pei Qing was stunned for a moment, then put his hands around his waist and whispered, “What’s wrong?”

Zhan Weiyang’s voice was very aggrieved, and he spoke in a low voice to Pei Qing’s ear, “Are you ignoring me?”

Pei Qing’s palm fell on Zhan Weiyang’s back and patted it gently, “When did I ignore you?”

Zhan Weiyang spoke with a nasal tone, saying, “You are just upset.”

       Pei Qing said, “I’m not.”

Zhan Weiyang stopped talking and sat quietly on Pei Qing’s legs, hugging him tightly.

After a while, Pei Qing thought Zhan Weiyang was crying, so he leaned back a little, and stretched out his hand to hold Zhan Weiyang’s jaw, wanting to see his face clearly. However, he only saw that his eyes were still red, and the tears did not really fall.

Zhan Weiyang looked at him for a while. He leaned forward slightly, put his forehead against his forehead, and said, “I don’t know what to do.”

Pei Qing originally wanted to ask him what he couldn’t say and why he wasn’t willing to say it clearly, but in the end, he didn’t want to force him too much, so he just said, “If you don’t know what to do, come to gege. gege will help you.”

       Zhan Weiyang said softly, “Really?”

Pei Qing told him, “Really, there is no problem in this world that gege can’t solve for Yangyang, do you believe it?”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t say whether he believed it or not, but he couldn’t help the corners of his mouth lifting into a smile, struggling between tears and laughter.

Pei Qing patted his back and said, “Alright, you’re not sad anymore, are you?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

When Pei Qing half-lay down on the bed, Zhan Weiyang still turned over and climbed on his legs, stretched out his hands to hug his neck, and leaned in his arms.

Pei Qing put one arm around his back, patted his head with the other hand, and asked, “If Yangyang becomes a tree in the future, will he have to live on the balcony forever?”

Zhan Weiyang seemed to think about it seriously and said, “The balcony can get sunlight.”

Pei Qing said, ‘Hmm’ and then asked, “What if it gets dark? Aren’t you scared to be alone on the balcony?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “There are other trees.”

Pei Qing asked, “Have you become good friends with those trees?”

Zhan Weiyang was asked and thought for a while before answering him, “Not yet.”

Pei Qing continued to ask, “Then can you communicate now?”

Zhan Weiyang grabbed the hem of Pei Qing’s pyjamas with his fingers and whispered, “Not yet.”

Pei Qing said ‘Oh’, as if a little regretful, “I was going to ask you to ask them a question for me.”

Zhan Weiyang looked up at him, “What is it?”

Pei Qing said, “Ask them why they turned Yangyang into a tree?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “It’s not because of them.”

Pei Qing asked, “Then what is it because of?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “It’s my stuff.”

Pei Qing looked down at him, “What’s yours?”

Zhan Weiyang pointed to his head, “The stuff inside my head.”

Pei Qing touched his head, “Yangyang, is there something so powerful in your head that it can turn you into a fortune tree?”

Zhan Weiyang suddenly became confused, “I don’t know.”

Pei Qing said, “You said something is deducting your points. How many points do you have now?”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him alertly.

Pei Qing said, “If you don’t want to tell me, forget it. It doesn’t matter.”

Zhan Weiyang then said in a muffled voice, “38.”

Pei Qing asked him, “What’s the full score?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “100 points.”

Pei Qing said, “My Yangyang is so silly. He only got 38 points out of 100. What should we do?”

Zhan Weiyang also felt very melancholy, “I don’t know.”

Pei Qing asked him, “Is there any way Qing gege help you get some extra points?”

Zhan Weiyang frowned in distress, “I don’t know.”

Pei Qing patted him on the back, “It doesn’t matter. If you don’t know, then you don’t know.”

Zhan Weiyang suddenly sat up with his hands on Pei Qing’s shoulders. He looked straight at Pei Qing. After looking at him for a long time, he leaned over and kissed Pei Qing lightly on the lips. It was so light that Pei Qing didn’t even feel the weight of his lips pressing on his.

Then Zhan Weiyang’s ears turned red, and he shrank his neck and said, “I’m sorry.” His upper body leaned forward, his pyjamas fell down, and his protruding collarbone and thin chest were clearly visible in the wide neckline.

Pei Qing lowered his gaze and asked him, “Why do you say sorry?”

Zhan Weiyang was still embarrassed, and his ears were red all the way to his neck as he said, “I shouldn’t kiss you.”

Pei Qing asked, “Why shouldn’t you kiss me?”

Zhan Weiyang stared at Pei Qing’s collar, avoiding eye contact, “In the TV dramas I’ve seen, it’s always the men kissing the women.”

Pei Qing’s hand slipped to his waist, gripping his slender frame. Knowing he shouldn’t say certain things but unable to hold back, he asked, “So you’ve only seen people kissing like that in TV dramas. Do you know of any other ways to kiss?”

Zhan Weiyang shook his head somewhat strangely. His world was too simple. Except for Chen Youyou showing him a video once, there was no other way to see it, and no one would tell him.

Pei Qing asked him, “Do gege want me to teach you?”

Zhan Weiyang nodded, “Okay.” After he said that, he moved closer, trying to touch Pei Qing’s lips again.

But Pei Qing suddenly put his hand between the two of them, laughed self-deprecatingly, and said, “Forget it, I shouldn’t teach you these.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him in confusion.

Pei Qing’s gaze became a little complicated. He patted his waist and said, “Go down.”

Zhan Weiyang could keenly perceive Pei Qing’s emotional changes, but he couldn’t figure out what caused this change, so he could only ask anxiously, “What’s wrong?” He thought Pei Qing was angry with him.

Pei Qing said, “Nothing, it’s almost time to go to bed.”

Zhan Weiyang asked cautiously, “You won’t teach me anymore?”

Pei Qing smiled and said, “I shouldn’t teach you these.”

       Zhan Weiyang didn’t understand, “Why?”

Pei Qing said, “Because I don’t think it’s right for me to do so.”

       Zhan Weiyang still didn’t understand.

Pei Qing said, “It’s okay, go to sleep, Yangyang.”

Zhan Weiyang reluctantly got off Pei Qing. He lay down, waited until Pei Qing turned off the light, and then he leaned close to Pei Qing’s ear and said, “I think you can teach me.”

Pei Qing asked, “Why do you want to learn this?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I don’t know, I just want to kiss you.”

Pei Qing opened his mouth, but no sound came out. He had a lot to say to Zhan Weiyang, but he felt a little bit speechless at this time. In the end, he just reached out and patted Zhan Weiyang on the back and said, “Good night.”

Zhan Weiyang was completely disappointed. He retreated and rested his head on his pillow, staring in Pei Qing’s direction unwillingly.

Pei Qing couldn’t sleep. Just now, he suddenly felt that what he had done was not good. It was not good for Zhan Pengcheng, Zhan Weiguang, himself, and, most importantly, for Zhan Weiyang.

How should he define the relationship between him and Zhan Weiyang? Zhan Weiyang was simply dependent on him, and unconsciously wanted to get close. Kissing on the lips might not have necessarily meant anything; Zhan Weiyang’s understanding hadn’t reached that point. Yet he himself couldn’t control his own actions. Given the extent of Zhan Weiyang’s dependence on him, no matter what he did, Zhan Weiyang might have happily accepted it. But what if it had been a Zhan Weiyang who had never drowned in the past?

Pei Qing opened the quilt with some irritability, put on slippers and walked out of the bedroom.

At that time, Zhan Weiyang hadn’t fallen asleep yet. When he heard Pei Qing get out of bed, he instantly wanted to reach out and grab Pei Qing. However, the System, which had already been bothering him this afternoon, couldn’t hold back any longer and coldly started deducting his points again.

The moment he heard that he had been deducted two points, Zhan Weiyang shrank back in fear, covered his head with the quilt, opened his eyes wide, looked up in the dark, and couldn’t help trembling.

How many points have been deducted? I should remember correctly…

Chapter 42

       Zhan Weiyang was scared.

He didn’t know how to answer Pei Qing’s question. There were some buzzing noises in his head, which tortured him. So he held the water bottle with both hands and buried his head lower and lower.

Pei Qing stretched out his hand and gently pressed it on the back of Zhan Weiyang’s neck and asked, “Yangyang, what’s wrong?”

Zhan Weiyang remained silent for a long time and said, in a muffled voice, “I can’t answer you.”

Pei Qing asked him again, “Is it that classmate of yours? The one called Xie Ling just now?”

Zhan Weiyang raised his head, and it was difficult to hide the surprise on his face.

Pei Qing took back her hand and said, “Yangyang, is there anything else you haven’t told me?”

Zhan Weiyang seemed flustered and helpless. He dug his fingers into the plastic water bottle, almost deforming it, and finally said, “I don’t have any.”

Pei Qing repeated the question, “You really don’t?”

Zhan Weiyang shook his head, “Really don’t.”

Pei Qing fell silent and looked at him for a long time without saying anything.

Zhan Weiyang was flustered. He secretly glanced at Pei Qing and then turned his head to continue drinking water in small sips.

Pei Qing said to him, “You rest here. I’m going down to get some air.” After saying that, he stretched out his hand to open the car door.

Zhan Weiyang subconsciously stretched out his hand to grab Pei Qing, but his fingertips only touched the hem of Pei Qing’s clothes and finally retracted powerlessly.

After waiting for less than half an hour, Zhan Weiguang and Zhan Xiusong also came back.

Zhan Xiusong looked particularly disheveled for some reason. His clothes were stained in large patches that couldn’t be patted clean, his glasses were crooked on his nose, always tilting slightly to the left, and there was a bit of a scr4p3 on his right cheek near the bridge of his nose.

After the two of them got in the car, they didn’t say anything, especially Zhan Xiusong, who looked very depressed and unhappy.

“Xiusong?” Pei Qing looked at him in the rearview mirror, “Are you okay?”

Zhan Xiusong said, “I’m fine.” His tone was a little aggrieved and stubborn.

Pei Qing then glanced at Zhan Weiguang. Zhan Weiguang didn’t say anything, only giving a quick look. So Pei Qing didn’t ask any more questions.

Later, when they returned, Zhan Weiguang told Pei Qing privately that Zhan Xiusong accidentally fell down, which was nothing. Sometimes, it was inevitable when exercising. Unexpectedly, Xu Fengwen laughed at him for being fat, saying that the whole ground was shaking when he fell down.

Afterwards, the joke lingered on. When Zhan Xiusong jumped up to shoot or grab the ball, Xu Fengwen would exaggerate and say that he shook when Zhan Xiusong landed, which greatly affected Zhan Xiusong’s mood for playing.

Zhan Weiguang felt annoyed. He stopped playing after saying a few words to Xu Fengwen and called Zhan Xiusong to leave.

After dinner, Zhan Xiusong obviously hadn’t gotten out of his depressed mood, and he went back to Zhan Weiyang’s room and closed the door.

Zhan Weiyang went up to the second floor and wanted to go into his room to take a look, but found that the door was locked from the inside. He raised his hand and wanted to knock on the door, but he felt that he didn’t want to talk to Zhan Xiusong, so he hesitated and didn’t knock.

He went to Pei Qing’s room, raised his hand and knocked on the door, then put his ear to the door. He didn’t hear any sound from inside, so he knocked again but still didn’t hear Pei Qing say come in. He had to open the door himself and found that the room was quiet and no one was there.

Zhan Weiyang didn’t know that Pei Qing was in Zhan Weiguang’s room at this time, he just retreated disappointedly and walked towards the large balcony on the second floor.

On the balcony, his flower pot was still alone in a row of large flower pots with lush green plants, and it looked lifeless because of the lack of life growing in it.

Zhan Weiyang walked over, afraid of crushing the flower pot, and dared not go in. So he could only sit cross-legged next to it, stretch out his arms to hold the edge of the flower pot, and gently lean his forehead against it.

It was not that he didn’t want to answer Pei Qing’s question. For a moment, he wanted to tell Pei Qing everything, but he had a terrible intuition that if he said it, his points would definitely be deducted. He didn’t know how much it would be deducted, and it would be bad if his points were all deducted.

Although he knew his journey would end in this flowerpot, he couldn’t bear to leave Pei Qing now. He just thought could it be a little later? As long as he followed the rules obediently and the System didn’t deduct his points too quickly, he could stay by Pei Qing’s side for one more day.

From childhood to adulthood, Zhan Weiyang had never met anyone who was so patient with him except his father and grandmother. Moreover, Pei Qing was different from his dad and grandmother; Pei Qing understood what he was thinking, something his dad and grandmother no longer did.

Zhan Weiyang felt sad and despondent.

Pei Qing was in Zhan Weiguang’s room. He came here for Zhan Weiyang. He walked to the window and found that from this angle of Zhan Weiguang’s room, he could see the balcony on the second floor and saw Zhan Weiyang sitting on the balcony forlornly hugging a flower pot.

“Yangyang—” Pei Qing paused here, “Have you felt that he has not been in good spirits lately?”

Zhan Weiguang was lying on the bed with one leg propped up, playing on his phone. Upon hearing this, he looked up, somewhat surprised, and said, “What?”

Pei Qing leaned forward slightly, crossed his arms and lay on the window, looking at Zhan Weiyang’s figure, “Did he tell you about any deductions or that he would become a fortune tree?”

“Fortune tree?” Zhan Weiguang was confused, “What fortune tree?”

Pei Qing suddenly realised that Zhan Weiyang had probably said those words only to him. Perhaps it was because he trusted only Pei Qing, or maybe he simply didn’t want to talk about it with anyone else. At that moment, Pei Qing hesitated, unsure whether he should continue discussing it with Zhan Weiguang.

He felt that Zhan Weiyang was in a bad state today, but he was not Zhan Weiyang’s guardian after all. He hoped to attract Zhan Pengcheng’s attention, and it would be best to find a doctor to talk to Zhan Weiyang and find out what the problem in his mind was. It was just that he noticed Zhan Pengcheng’s resistance last time, so he chose Zhan Weiguang this time.

Zhan Weiguang had already gotten off the bed and walked to Pei Qing’s side and just happened to see Zhan Weiyang downstairs from the window.

“Do you know why he cherishes his flower pot so much?” Zhan Weiguang suddenly grasped the point at this time.

Pei Qing looked at him and hesitated for a long time before saying, “What I just said, he said he’s going to turn into a fortune tree.”

“Why a fortune tree?” Zhan Weiguang found it difficult to understand.

“The point is not what kind of tree it is,” Pei Qing said, “the point is why he thinks he will become a tree?”

“He— Just often has some strange thoughts,” Zhan Weiguang leaned against the window and looked at Zhan Weiyang’s back with Pei Qing.

Pei Qing asked, “Does it last long?”

Zhan Weiguang replied, “Not necessarily. Sometimes he forgets when he’s distracted. Why does he think he will turn into a tree?”

Pei Qing said, “I don’t know. I thought you would know.”

“He doesn’t tell me anything. How can I know!”

Pei Qing looked at him, “He thinks you treat him badly.”

Zhan Weiguang laughed sarcastically, “What more could I do to be good to him?”

Pei Qing didn’t want to continue discussing this topic with Zhan Weiguang. They were brothers who grew up together and had their own way of getting along. He had no right to interfere. He was just worried about Zhan Weiyang’s current situation. After a while, he asked Zhan Weiguang, “Do you think he can get out of this state on his own?”

Zhan Weiguang said, “I don’t know. He has always seemed normal in front of me; this is just how he is. Back in elementary school, he became attached to a cup. He had to use that cup for drinking water, carried it in his backpack every day to school and brought it back home. One time, my dad accidentally broke it and couldn’t find an exact replacement. He went to great lengths to buy one that looked very similar, but it still didn’t satisfy him. He didn’t drink water all day, and my dad almost cried out of frustration.”

“What happened next?” Pei Qing asked.

Zhan Weiguang continued, “Later, I got impatient and grabbed him and forced him to pour water from my cup into his mouth. He almost choked, then I said, ‘You’re done. You’ve drunk from my cup.’ I didn’t know what he was thinking, but he suddenly stopped making trouble. My dad scolded me for this.”

Pei Qing looked out the window in silence, and after a long while, he said, “Uncle was probably just too anxious.”

Zhan Weiguang said in a nonchalant tone, “It’s okay, you don’t need to try to persuade me. I know my dad better than anyone. I don’t have any particular feelings about it. As long as it has nothing to do with Zhan Weiyang, he’s pretty good to me. But once it involves Zhan Weiyang, he doesn’t have any boundaries himself, so how can he be concerned about his attitude towards others?”

“I’m sorry,” Pei Qing said sincerely, “Can I ask you a question, where is your mother?”

       Zhan Weiguang said, “Divorced, gone.”

Pei Qing was a little surprised.

Zhan Weiguang’s tone remained nonchalant and indifferent, “I’ve heard that other people’s mothers can give up everything for their children. Maybe my mom is different from other mothers. She argued with my dad a lot over Zhan Weiyang, and later, she couldn’t handle the stress and didn’t want to stay in this family anymore, so she left.”

Pei Qing never expected it to be like this. He asked, “Was it because of Yangyang’s drowning incident?”

Zhan Weiguang nodded, “When Zhan Weiyang nearly drowned, both my dad and I were there. I got into a scuffle with some other kids, and my dad came over to separate us so he didn’t notice Zhan Weiyang. By the time someone else found him, he had already stopped breathing, and his heart had stopped.”

As he reached this point, Zhan Weiguang’s tone grew sombre. He looked at Pei Qing and said, “This is a lifelong pain for my dad. I don’t know if he hates me, but I know he hates himself. My mom also hates him. They took Zhan Weiyang everywhere to see doctors, visiting all the good hospitals in big cities, but it only ended in this result. My mom couldn’t stand it anymore, started arguing with my dad obsessively, and grew dissatisfied with everything the family did. Eventually, she pushed herself to leave.”

Pei Qing took a deep breath and then exhaled slowly; the sound sounded like a sigh, carrying a sense of powerlessness over the past and the future.

He felt that he could understand Zhan Pengcheng’s mentality, and he feared that this guilt would never fade away in his lifetime.

Pei Qing raised his hand, covered his face and rubbed it gently, feeling somewhat exhausted.

Zhan Weiguang said, “I’m sorry to tell you about these messy things in my family.”

Pei Qing said, “It’s what I want to know.”

Zhan Weiguang crossed his arms in front of his chest, “Actually, you’re really a good person. I rarely see someone so patient with Zhan Weiyang. Even my dad, though he seems very accommodating on the surface, sometimes is obviously just perfunctory to Zhan Weiyang. He says, ‘okay, okay’ but doesn’t really follow through. No wonder Zhan Weiyang likes you.”

       Pei Qing didn’t speak.

Zhan Weiguang said, “I’m sorry to bother you. I don’t think you need to worry too much about Zhan Weiyang’s strange thoughts. Maybe after a while, he’ll be fine. Otherwise, you could just smash the flowerpot into pieces, let him be upset and cry for a while, and he might come to terms with it by the next day.”

“Better not,” Pei Qing said. “Let’s keep it for him.”

When Pei Qing came down from upstairs, he saw that Zhan Weiyang was no longer on the balcony. He walked over to lock the balcony door and then went back to the room.

As soon as he opened the door, he saw Zhan Weiyang kneeling on the floor, his body sprawled by the side of the bed, staring blankly with red eyes. Upon seeing him return, Zhan Weiyang immediately raised his head like a startled rabbit, looking at him with reddened eyes.

Chapter 41

The name of the boy who greeted Zhan Weiguang was Xu Fengwen, a senior student in the same school as them. Before Zhan Weiguang graduated, they were both on the school basketball team.

Zhan Weiguang nodded at him and said, “It’s been a long time since we last met.”

Xu Fengwen smiled and asked, “Do you want to play basketball?”

       Zhan Weiguang said, “Yeah.”

Xu Fengwen pointed to a few companions behind him and said, “Do you want to join us? There are exactly six of us.”

Zhan Weiguang glanced at those people and said, “Forget it, I’m taking my brother to play.”

Xu Fengwen looked over, somewhat surprised. Because Zhan Weiyang had been hiding behind Pei Qing all this time, he only just now noticed that Zhan Weiyang was actually there. So, he smiled and said, “Alright then, you guys go ahead and play.”

After that, Xu Fengwen returned to the original court, and Xie Ling immediately turned his eyes away and continued to play basketball.

Zhan Xiusong was dribbling the ball. He was a little excited and kept urging everyone to hurry up.

Pei Qing felt Zhan Weiyang still holding his shirt tightly, so he turned around and asked, “Are we going to start?”

Zhan Weiyang said in a low voice, “Yes.”

Pei Qing said, “Then do you want to let me go first?”

Zhan Weiyang reluctantly released his fingers.

Pei Qing then told Zhan Xiusong and Zhan Weiguang, “I’ll be on the same team as Yangyang.”

Zhan Xiusong immediately said, “Okay, I’ll be on the same team as Guang ge!” He was mainly afraid that he would be on the same team as Zhan Weiyang.

Zhan Weiyang heard it and quickly said, “Okay, okay.”

Zhan Xiusong had never played basketball with Zhan Weiyang before. He approached Zhan Weiguang and whispered, “Do we need to hold back our strength later?”

Zhan Weiguang squatted down to tie his shoelaces tightly and looked at him, “What strength do you want to hold back?”

Zhan Xiusong said, “I’m afraid that if I bully Zhan Weiyang too much, he will go and complain to me again.”

Zhan Weiguang stood up and said, “When did he complain to you?”

Zhan Xiusong pursed his lips, “Hmph!”

Zhan Weiguang then said, “Don’t worry, you may not beat him.”

Zhan Xiusong didn’t believe it at all, “How is it possible!” He threw the basketball into the air with full momentum and said, “Come on!”

As it turned out, when the time finally came, Zhan Xiusong realised that Zhan Weiguang wasn’t just talking nonsense. Zhan Weiyang not only knew how to play basketball, but he was also very skilled at it.

Pei Qing was also very good at playing basketball, but he was not at all flashy, just like his personality. His movements were clean and neat, not fancy, but very practical.

The most terrifying thing was that he and Zhan Weiyang cooperated very well. Almost every time he got the ball, he would find an opportunity to pass it to Zhan Weiyang. Zhan Weiyang shot with a very accurate and light movement. Every time he scored a goal, he would look for Pei Qing with a smile and stubbornly clap hands with him to celebrate.

Facing such an opponent, even with Zhan Weiguang’s heroic efforts, Zhan Xiusong was still thoroughly defeated and left speechless.

And because he was fat, he was already out of breath after playing for more than ten minutes, and he couldn’t even run. In the end, he sat under the basketball stand and unscrewed the cap of a Coke bottle to drink water.

Zhan Weiguang stood by and said, “Why don’t you just forget it.”

Zhan Xiusong was not convinced and panted and said, “Wait for me to rest for a while, and then continue.”

At this time, three people left the opposite court, and the rest of the people stopped playing.

Xu Fengwen stood by their court, holding a basketball to watch the game.

Zhan Weiguang turned around and saw Xu Fengwen, who waved at him. He then looked down at Zhan Xiusong and said, “Why don’t you take a break on the side? I’ll call my former teammate to come over.”

Zhan Xiusong said, “No, I want to play!” He wiped the sweat off his face, “How about you call two people, we’ll play 3v3?”

At this moment, Pei Qing walked over to the basketball hoop, bent down to pick up a bottle of water. He then stood up straight, and twisted open the cap. Zhan Weiyang also walked over.

He reached out and handed the bottle of water to Zhan Weiyang first.

But he didn’t expect Zhan Weiyang to misunderstand his action. He didn’t reach out to take the bottle of water but directly opened his mouth, bit the bottle mouth, and then looked at Pei Qing and waited for Pei Qing to feed him.

Pei Qing paused and then had to tilt the bottom of the bottle slightly, slowly and carefully feeding the water into Zhan Weiyang’s mouth.

Zhan Weiyang tilted his head, and the pointed Adam’s apple on his white neck slid up the line with the swallowing action.

Pei Qing suddenly had some thoughts and calmly raised his arm slightly. Seeing that the bottle mouth was about to leave Zhan Weiyang’s lips, Zhan Weiyang quickly stood on tiptoe to reach it but still let some water flow out and slide down along his chin.

He quickly pushed away half a step, and Pei Qing also withdrew his hand.

Zhan Weiyang raised his arm, wiped the water off his face, and said, “Oh, it spilt.”

Pei Qing took back the water bottle, drank a sip with a careless look, and said, “Why are you so careless?”

Zhan Weiyang felt very embarrassed and said, “I’m sorry.”

Pei Qing put the bottle cap back, put the water bottle back under the basketball hoop, and walked towards the edge of the court. He saw Zhan Weiyang following him and whispered to him, “Next time, make sure to catch the water properly.”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded quickly, “Okay.”

Pei Qing raised his hand to hug his shoulders, couldn’t help but laugh softly, and said, “Silly Yangyang.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him, a little embarrassed, and lowered his head again.

When they didn’t notice, Xie Ling stopped by Xu Fengwen on a bicycle and talked to him.

Zhan Xiusong saw it and said to Zhan Weiguang, “Let’s ask them to come together.”

Zhan Weiguang hesitated a little but still walked towards Xu Fengwen and asked, “Are you leaving?”

Xu Fengwen’s tone seemed somewhat regretful, “They’re all done playing.”

Zhan Weiguang invited him and Xie Ling, “Do you want to join us?”

Before Xu Fengwen answered, Xie Ling suddenly asked, “Are you Zhan Weiyang’s brother?”

Zhan Weiguang looked at him and thought he was quite rude. After a moment of silence, he said, “Yes, you are?”

Xie Ling didn’t answer him but continued to ask, “I saw that he plays basketball very well.”

Zhan Weiguang’s tone became cold, “Yes, so? Want to give it a try?”

Xu Fengwen knew the personalities of both people and hurriedly tried to smooth things over, interrupting their conversation and asking Xie Ling, “Do you want to play for a while longer?”

       Xie Ling nodded.

Zhan Weiguang then turned to Pei Qing and the others and shouted, “Qing ge, my friend wants to join, can he?”

Before Pei Qing answered, Zhan Weiyang had already grabbed Pei Qing’s wrist tightly and said, “No.”

Zhan Xiusong stood up from under the basketball stand and said excitedly, “Yes, yes!”

Everyone was waiting for Pei Qing’s answer.

Pei Qing looked at Zhan Weiyang’s nervous expression and then at the hand he was holding. Because Zhan Weiyang was holding him too tightly, his knuckles were slightly white. He said to Zhan Weiguang, “Yangyang is not feeling well. Why don’t you four play? I’ll go over with him to rest for a while.”

Zhan Weiguang frowned and walked towards them. Seeing that Zhan Weiyang’s expression was indeed not good, he asked, “What’s wrong with you?”

Zhan Weiyang did not answer him.

Pei Qing said, “I’ll take him to the car to sit for a while.”

Zhan Weiguang looked at Zhan Weiyang for a long time, and when he was sure that he had no major health problems, he said, “Go ahead, call me if you need anything.”

Pei Qing patted Zhan Weiyang on the shoulder and said, “Let’s go.”

Zhan Weiyang hurriedly followed Pei Qing. His steps seemed flustered and hurried.

On this side, Zhan Weiguang walked back to Xu Fengwen and the others and said, “My brother is not feeling well. He and my older cousin left first, do you guys still want to play?”

Xu Fengwen said, “I’ll play.” After saying that, he looked at Xie Ling, as if he was unsure of his opinion.

Unexpectedly, Xie Ling said, “Okay, let’s go.”

Pei Qing returned to the car, opened all the windows, and opened a new bottle of water for Zhan Weiyang.

Zhan Weiyang held the bottle and drank it in small sips.

Pei Qing suddenly said, “Yangyang, do you remember when you first started school, you wrote a love letter to someone, but she threw it away?”

Zhan Weiyang looked pale and looked at him with some horror.

Pei Qing asked him, “Do you still like that person now?”

Chapter 40

Zhan Pengcheng got up in the morning. The corridor outside was still quiet, and none of the children were awake.

He washed and changed clothes in his room before coming out. As soon as he opened the door, he saw that the door to the balcony opposite his door was open.

Usually, before going to bed at night, Zhan Pengcheng would lock the balcony door. Last night, he even opened the door to check and saw that it was locked. Pei Qing and the others must have closed it when they left. How come the door was open early this morning?

Zhan Pengcheng felt strange and walked over to look at the balcony. He didn’t see anyone. He saw an oval potato suddenly appear on the ground in front of Zhan Weiyang’s empty flower pot. There were three small wooden sticks stuck on the potato. When he got closer, he found that it was a burnt incense stick, and the potato was still covered with incense ash.

At that moment, Zhan Pengcheng felt a chill on his back for some reason and shuddered.

He picked up the potato, went downstairs, and put it on the dining table.

There was the sound of Auntie Luo making breakfast in the kitchen, and Grandma was still in her room.

Zhan Pengcheng sat down not long ago when he heard footsteps coming down from upstairs, and Pei Qing appeared at the door of the dining room.

“Look at this,” Zhan Pengcheng tapped the table with his fingers, “was it Yangyang who did it?”

Generally, when faced with such puzzling situations, Zhan Pengcheng’s first reaction was always to suspect Zhan Weiyang. He frowned, feeling troubled by how increasingly incomprehensible his younger son was becoming.

Pei Qing stopped and looked at the remaining incense sticks and potatoes for a while and said, “It’s not Yangyang.”

Zhan Pengcheng was a little surprised, “Then do you know who it is?”

Pei Qing walked to the dining table and sat down, saying, “Did Uncle find it on the balcony on the second floor?”

       Zhan Pengcheng hurriedly said, “Yes.”

Pei Qing said, “It should be Xiusong.”

       Zhan Pengcheng looked confused, “Huh?”

At this time, Auntie Luo came out with a plate of buns, and saw the things on the table, and said, “This incense was burned by Songsong, right?”

Zhan Pengcheng asked curiously, “How do you know that too?”

Auntie Luo said, “This boy came downstairs very late last night, wanting to go out alone. I happened to see him and asked where he was going. He said he was going to buy incense. I told him that it was too late for any stores to be open, so I took some leftover incense from our last ancestor worship out of the cabinet and gave it to him. The potato was also something he took from the kitchen.”

After saying that, Auntie Luo heard the porridge boiling in the kitchen and hurried back.

Zhan Pengcheng looked at Pei Qing and asked in confusion, “What does it mean?”

Pei Qing took a box of milk, put a straw in it, and said, “It was about the quarrel between him and Yangyang yesterday. Yangyang wanted him to apologise to the flowerpot, and he sarcastically asked if he should burn some incense. Maybe out of spite, he actually burned a stick of incense.”

Zhan Pengcheng laughed dryly, “It’s not a big deal. Is it really necessary?”

Pei Qing also smiled and said, “It’s a big deal for them.”

“Oh my-” Zhan Pengcheng sighed, “So Uncle is old and doesn’t understand what these young people are thinking; this is why Yangyang doesn’t love his Dad anymore.” The more he talked, the sadder he became.

Pei Qing held the straw in his mouth, looked up at Zhan Pengcheng, and said nothing.

Not long after, the others came downstairs to have breakfast.

Zhan Pengcheng was eager to resolve the conflict between Zhan Weiyang and Zhan Xiusong. When he saw Zhan Weiyang coming downstairs, he said to him, “Your brother has apologised to your flower pot and even burned incense. Can you forgive him?”

Zhan Weiyang glanced at the potatoes on the table and turned to look at Zhan Xiusong, who was coming downstairs behind him.

Zhan Xiusong walked directly to the dining table, grabbed the potatoes and walked towards the kitchen. After a while, he heard him ask Auntie Luo in the kitchen, “Can this potato still be eaten?”

Auntie Luo said, “It can be eaten; no need to waste it.”

Zhan Pengcheng smiled and asked them to sit down and have breakfast.

Zhan Weiyang said to Zhan Xiusong, “Since you apologised to my flower pot and my flower pot is already healed, let’s forget it.”

Zhan Xiusong lowered his head and mumbled something that no one heard clearly.

Zhan Pengcheng was very happy, “Let’s agree not to get angry anymore. Let’s enjoy the rest of the holiday together.”

That afternoon, Zhan Xiusong took the initiative to show his goodwill to Zhan Weiyang and asked him if he wanted to play basketball together.

Zhan Weiyang looked at Pei Qing, “Are you going to play basketball too?”

Pei Qing said, “If you want to go, go.”

Zhan Weiyang said quickly, “I want to go!”

Pei Qing smiled and said, “Then go.”

The four of them went out with basketballs. There were no empty courts near the neighbourhood. Zhan Weiguang said there was another court near their school, but it was a little far to walk there, so Pei Qing went back and drove everyone there.

Zhan Weiguang and Zhan Weiyang went to the same high school, and he was more familiar with the outside of the school than Zhan Weiyang. He showed Pei Qing the way and asked him to drive the car to a nearby cultural palace and find an empty basketball court.

Zhan Weiyang followed Pei Qing to the basketball court. He was a little excited because he had wanted to play basketball with Pei Qing and Zhan Weiguang a long time ago, but they never took him to play.

Pei Qing held the basketball in his hand, suddenly stopped, and passed it to Zhan Weiyang with some force.

Zhan Weiyang reacted quickly and caught it, smiling. He hugged the basketball and continued walking. But as soon as he walked into the court, he saw several people playing basketball on the other side of the court, and his smile froze on his face.

No one noticed it at that time.

There were two courts here, and the four of them only needed half a court. The other court was quite lively, as if someone was playing a game, and several teenagers had occupied the court on their side.

Those teenagers were students from Zhan Weiyang’s school, and he was quite familiar with one of them, Xie Ling.

Zhan Weiyang’s System had not harassed him for several days. He almost forgot about Xie Ling, but he didn’t expect to see Xie Ling suddenly today. At that moment, a buzzing noise sounded in his head.

He stopped and looked in the direction of Xie Ling with a pale face. He felt like that sound was the System starting up. Though he hadn’t conversed with it, it continued to harass and erode his emotions, leaving him with an inexplicable sense of panic.

Pei Qing was the first to notice that Zhan Weiyang was not in the right state. He followed Zhan Weiyang’s dull line of sight and glanced at the court over there, saw Xie Ling, then walked in front of Zhan Weiyang, bent down slightly to look at him, and asked him, “What’s wrong, Yangyang?”

Pei Qing occupied Zhan Weiyang’s line of sight, and the noise in his head disappeared at once. He suddenly came back to his senses, his gaze fell on Pei Qing’s face, and said, “Ah?”

Pei Qing said, “You are in a daze.”

Zhan Weiyang was a little flustered. He lowered his head to look at the basketball in his hand and said, “I’m not.”

Pei Qing turned around and looked at Xie Ling again. He wanted to ask Zhan Weiyang what he was thinking of, but when his gaze fell on Zhan Weiyang’s forehead, he found that his face was not only pale but even sweating a little. So the words he originally wanted to say were changed to, “Are you feeling uncomfortable? If you are not feeling well, let’s go back.”

Zhan Weiyang raised his head quickly and said, “No.” He had wanted to play basketball with Pei Qing for a long time.

Pei Qing raised his hand and patted his shoulder, “Then let’s play basketball?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded quickly.

Zhan Xiusong and Zhan Weiguang had already stood at the bottom of the court. Zhan Xiusong urged Zhan Weiyang, “What are you doing? Come over here quickly.”

Zhan Weiyang heard this and threw the basketball in his hand to him first and then slowly walked towards the court. He followed Pei Qing and secretly stretched out a hand to grab Pei Qing’s clothes. He only lowered his head to look at Pei Qing’s back and tried not to look at Xie Ling.

They walked to the basketball stand, and Zhan Weiguang lowered his voice and asked Pei Qing, “What’s wrong?”

Pei Qing shook his head and turned to look at Xie Ling on the opposite court.

Xie Ling didn’t notice them. He was concentrating on dribbling past people and then made a beautiful jump shot, but unfortunately, it was a little off. It hit the basket frame and didn’t go in. He landed on the ground, moving his wrist and walking two steps on the spot.

At this time, a teenager who was playing basketball with him picked up the basketball that was rolling on the ground, held it in his hands and walked towards Zhan Weiguang and the others, waving his arms and shouting loudly, “Zhan Weiguang!” Xie Ling then looked up and saw Zhan Weiyang hiding behind Pei Qing.
