Chapter 30 – Wanjia Village

In the evening, when Xia Hongshen returned to the room, Song Jun was watching TV.

Yuntong was a small county town, and there were no very good hotels in the city. Even this hotel could only be considered barely clean.

Song Jun took a bath, sat on the edge of the bed and watched TV. When he heard Xia Hongshen knocking on the door, he immediately wanted to pretend to be asleep. Later, considering that there was only one key card and it was with him, he had no choice but to get up and open the door for Xia Hongshen.

After Xia Hongshen came in, he only asked him, “Have you taken a shower?” Then he packed his things and took a shower.

After taking a shower, Song Jun lay on the bed and changed channels boredly.

Xia Hongshen was only wearing trousers, and his trousers were not zipped up, exposing his underwear. He was sitting on the edge of the bed, wiping his hair with his upper body naked.

Song Jun controlled her eyes not to glance in his direction, and after changing channels uncomfortably for more than ten times, he asked, “What on earth are we doing here?”

Xia Hongshen said, “Looking for something.”

Song Jun put down the TV remote control, “You obviously accepted the commission to do a pathological examination!”

Xia Hongshen told him, “The main thing is to find things.”

Song Jun always felt that he was fooling him.

Xia Hongshen stood up, threw the towel to the bathroom, then came out and said to him: “Wherever there is a Thousand Years Lamp, monsters and evil spirits are always likely to appear.”

Song Jun looked at him in surprise, as if this was the first time Xia Hongshen had mentioned these things to himself in detail.

Xia Hongshen seemed not used to explaining these things. He thought for a while and continued, “The Thousand Years Lamp is a treasure of the immortal family. It has too much spiritual energy. Its appearance in the human world will inevitably cause demons and ghosts in the world to fight for it. They rely on its spiritual energy to enhance their cultivation. “

Song Jun became interested and asked, “Since it is a treasure, why did it break into pieces and live in the world?”

Xia Hongshen stopped speaking and just looked at him firmly.

Song Jun was creeped out by his gaze, not knowing exactly what it meant.

Xia Hongshen suddenly said, “I don’t know either. By the time I find out, the Thousand Years Lamp has been destroyed and thrown into the mortal world.”

Song Jun was stunned and asked, “Who is he? What does it have to do with you? You need to find him in person.”

Xia Hongshen said, “My people did it.”

After saying this, Xia Hongshen lay down on the bed, pulled the quilt over him, and seemed to be ready to sleep.

Song Jun was a little concerned about what he said about his person. Who was his people? Could it be Feng Junyuan? So, Feng Junyuan was also demoted to the mortal world and separated from him?

As he thought of this, Song Jun saw that Xia Hongshen had closed his eyes, so he got out of bed, turned off the TV, and went to the bathroom again. When he came out, Song Jun found a bag of Whiskas bags exposed in the travel bag he opened. He was confused and didn’t know when he had packed it. He went over and pulled it open to see that it was obvious that there was more than one bag. After standing there in confusion for a long time, Song Jun shook his head, climbed into bed and went to sleep.

The next morning, there was still no time to sleep in.

Song Jun was brushing his teeth in the bathroom when he heard a knock on the door. He opened it to see Long Xing standing in the doorway.

Long Xing smiled and said to Song Jun, “After finishing washing up, go down to have breakfast. After eating, we will go up the mountain.”

Song Jun bit his toothbrush and nodded.

The breakfast was beef noodles at a noodle shop opposite the hotel.

Song Jun and Xia Hongshen arrived a little later. When they arrived, they saw Feng Junyuan sitting alone at a table and wiping the table carefully with tissue. Long Xing was standing next to the stove watching the owner cook noodles, and Xi Anling beckoned them to come and sit down as soon as she saw them.

Song Jun glanced at Feng Junyuan and finally sat at the table with Xi Anling and Long Xing.

Xi Anling took a pair of chopsticks and put them into the boiling water in the cauldron to scald them. Then she handed them a pair and then sat down next to Xia Hongshen.

The moment Song Jun took Xi Anling’s chopsticks, he was suddenly in a trance. He always felt that this scene was familiar, and these people seemed familiar too. But this was clearly impossible; all these people had only met within the past year, and they hadn’t known each other before that.

Long Xing huddled close to the stove, watched the boss cook the noodles, and then helped bring them the noodles.

As soon as Song Jun received his noodles, she saw Xi Anling on the opposite side holding a piece of beef and putting it into her bowl. As a result, her chopsticks were halfway extended. She suddenly noticed Xia Hongshen, so she turned around and put it in Xia Hongshen’s bowl and said, “I don’t like beef. Senior Brother Xia can eat it.”

Xia Hongshen said nothing and buried himself in eating noodles.

When they were finished eating, Lü Hai and others also drove a car and parked at the door of the noodle shop, saying that they would leave after Xia Hongshen and others finished eating.

The county police station brought two cars with six people. They originally wanted to let Long Xing and Xia Hongshen go up the mountain with them. Song Jun and the others looked like students, so Lü Hai thought they were following them for fun. He then said the scenery on the mountain was average, it was not a tourist attraction, there was nothing to do, and the villagers on the mountain were also vicious, so it was better not to go there.

But Xia Hongshen insisted on letting them go together.

Long Xing always listened to whatever Xia Hongshen said, so he told Lü Hai that it didn’t matter. They happened to have a car on their end, so they could all go together.

Long Xing came from the municipal bureau of the provincial capital city. Of course, the public security bureau of the small county town would not embarrass him. Hearing what Long Xing said, he didn’t force it.

A total of three vehicles drove up the mountain together. The county public security bureau drove two police cars, one from their criminal investigation squadron and one from the technical squadron.

Song Jun was still sitting by the window, looking at the scenery outside. He suddenly became worried. According to Xia Hongshen, the aura of the Thousand Years Lamp could easily attract evil spirits and monsters, so there might be something strange on this mountain. He was afraid of seeing something scary.

In the car, Song Jun expressed his doubts to Xia Hongshen.

Xia Hongshen actually asked, “Are you afraid?”

Song Jun thought that he was indeed afraid, but when Xia Hongshen asked, how could he say he was afraid in front of this car of people?

But before he could speak, Long Xing actually said, “Will there be a ghost?”

Song Jun glanced at the young man driving in the front seat and was speechless, not knowing how to answer him.

Xia Hongshen said, “There is probably a ghost.”

Long Xing said ‘Ah’, not very surprised or scared.

The topic was interrupted, and Song Jun was embarrassed to ask any more questions.

Although they set off early in the morning, it was already noon when they actually arrived at Wanjia Village on the mountain.

As Lü Hai and the others said, although this area was not a barren mountain, it was not a place with beautiful scenery and mountains surrounding it. The vegetation on the mountains was sparse, and bare loess rocks could be seen in many places.

The road was also very difficult to walk on. Although cars could pass on the winding mountain road, the road was very bad, and there were many slopes and turns. Song Jun almost vomited while sitting all the way.

As soon as the car arrived at its destination, he quickly opened the door and got out of the car, caressing his chest to resist the nausea. However, the air in the mountains was really fresh. Song Jun stood up straight and took a deep breath.

Wanjia Village is an old village. Due to its geographical location, the village environment was relatively closed. Some young people had chosen to go down to work in the mountains over the years, but the inside of the village still looked old and poor.

The village chief and the village party secretary came to the entrance of the village to greet them. Beyond that point, there were only mountain trails, and cars couldn’t go any further. They had to park on the road outside the village.

Everyone got out of the car and walked inside with the old village chief.

Long Xing heard that the old village chief was suspected of murder. At this time, he couldn’t help but look at the old man. He looked haggard; his brows were frowning, and he looked a little uneasy.

Song Jun always felt that the atmosphere in this village was a little strange, which made him feel a little uneasy. He unconsciously quickened his pace and followed Xia Hongshen.

They were walking about a hundred meters when they suddenly saw a group of villagers standing in front, blocking the road.

The leader among them was an old man with all-white hair and beard. He was leaning on a cane in his hand. He tapped the ground several times and said, “You guys want to come and take Jingsheng away again! I told you guys; we won’t agree to take Jingsheng off the mountain!”

Song Jun stopped and looked at the people blocking the road in front of him. It was roughly estimated that there were hundreds of people. It seemed that the whole village was mobilised.

The old village chief coughed and stepped forward and said, “Old man, these are police officers. They said they wanted to see Jingsheng’s body and not take Jingsheng down the mountain.”

The old man pounded his cane again, pointed at the old village chief and said, “You killed someone just to avoid responsibility because your nephew is the police chief.”

Song Jun saw the village chief’s face change, and he said loudly, “I didn’t kill him! How could I kill Jingsheng!”

The atmosphere was a little tense. The village party secretary said at this time, “The police comrades said they would not take away Jingsheng. They specially invited experts from the university to take a look at Jingsheng’s body and find the murderer.”

Lü Hai quickly stood up, pointed out Xia Hongshen to the villagers, and said, “This is a doctor from the provincial university who specialises in autopsies. He is not from the police, he is not a local at all, and he will not mess around, okay? Everyone can rest assured.”

As soon as Lü Hai finished speaking, he heard a sharp cry from a woman in the crowd. She was still wearing a sackcloth and mourning. She must be a relative of the young man who died. Sure enough, she said next, “You can’t dissect my son. Even if he’s dead, he should have a complete body!”

Xia Hongshen said nothing. Anyway, this kind of matter should be coordinated by the Public Security Bureau. He was just accepting the entrustment.

Actually, it stood to reason that in this kind of criminal case, even if the family members disagreed, an autopsy should still be carried out. However, in this situation, if they were not careful, it would develop into a group incident. The police naturally proceeded with extreme caution, afraid of inflaming the emotions of the villagers.

In the end, several people from the county public security bureau discussed it and decided to compromise first, so they said to the villagers, “No autopsy. Just take a look at the body first. If necessary, we will then discuss the autopsy?”

The public security bureau had conceded to this point, and it seemed unreasonable for the villagers not to agree.

Song Jun saw several men discussing with the old man for several minutes. Finally, the old man nodded and said to them, “Come with us.”

Chapter 29 – A Trip

Soon, Long Xing responded to Xia Hongshen, saying that his request was granted, but he needed to leave as soon as possible; the sooner, the better.

That night, Song Jun was working at a milk tea shop. Xia Hongshen came out of the Forensic Medicine building in the afternoon and saw that it was almost time, so he went directly to the milk tea shop in front of the school to find Song Jun.

Song Jun just made milk tea for two female customers. After they took the milk tea, they turned around and left the store. So he saw Xia Hongshen walking in from outside at a glance. His first reaction was to pretend he didn’t see him and lowered his head to look at the small cup on the counter.

Xia Hongshen didn’t seem to mind if he ignored him. He walked straight to the high stool in front of the counter and sat down. He said to Song Jun, “Would you like to go somewhere with me?”

Song Jun was stunned when he heard this. He thought Xia Hongshen was asking him to go out with him now. He was a little nervous, but at the same time, he immediately refused and said, “I’m working part-time, so I can’t leave.”

Xia Hongshen said, “Please take two days off.”

“Huh?” Song Jun didn’t understand what he meant.

Xia Hongshen put his hands on the counter, tapped his fingertips a few times, and said, “Tomorrow is Friday, the day after tomorrow, and two days after that, at most, we should be back by Monday. You don’t seem to have classes tomorrow, and if you take a day off on Monday, it should be fine.”

Only then did Song Jun understand that he was going to a place with him, which seemed to be quite far away. He became confused, “Where to?”

Xia Hongshen said, “A mountainous area over there in Yuntong.”

“Yuntong?” Song Jun was confused. Yuntong was a remote county town in the province, surrounded by mountains. Although Song Jun had heard of it, he had never been there. He didn’t understand why Xia Hongshen suddenly asked him to go there. place. Moreover, the two of them had a big fight last night, and now Xia Hongshen came to him with such an attitude as if nothing had happened, which made him feel very uncomfortable.

The more Song Jun thought about it, the more angry he became and said, “I won’t go.”

Xia Hongshen said to him, “I want to find something.”

Song Jun was stunned and looked up at him.

Xia Hongshen said, “It’s important to us all.”

Song Jun thought for a moment and asked, “Is it the Thousand Years Lamp?”

       Xia Hongshen said, “Yes.”

Song Jun reached out to sort out the sugar packets on the counter and said, “That has nothing to do with me.”

“Song Jun,” Xia Hongshen called him.

Song Jun’s biggest problem in his life was probably being soft-hearted. He wanted to slap himself twice and tell himself to be tougher and drive Xia Hongshen out, but he couldn’t do it. He stared at the counter and rearranged the neatly arranged menus and sugar bowls. But thought of Xia Hongshen teaching him step by step in the lab. Finally, he turned away and said ‘En’.

He was just accompanying Xia Hongshen to go out on a trip; it didn’t mean something would happen to them. Just treat him as a return of favour, and after the repayment, there would be no involvement.

The police were in a hurry, so Song Jun went back to the dormitory that night to pack his things and set off early the next morning.

The next morning, before dawn, the alarm clock on Song Jun rang. He got up to wash up, knocked on Xia Hongshen’s door, and set off with him.

Since he was only going for three or four days and the weather was not hot yet, he only brought a small travel bag with some changes of clothes and daily necessities, while Xia Hongshen simply brought nothing with him.

Song Jun wanted to ask him at first, but then he thought it was none of his business, so he endured it and didn’t speak.

They made an appointment to wait for the car at the school gate. When they arrived, it was still dark, but Song Jun discovered that Feng Junyuan and Xi Anling were going with them.

Xi Anling wouldn’t go into detail. Song Jun simply couldn’t figure out how Xia Hongshen persuaded Feng Junyuan to go with him.

The person who drove over to pick them up was Long Xing.

Long Xing said that this was originally a commission from the Yuntong County Public Security Bureau. The city bureau here did not need to send too many people to go with them. Since Xia Hongshen asked Long Xing to go with him, he simply asked Long Xing to accompany them and drive them there. He was responsible for contacting the local public security bureau and would send everyone back when it was finished.

Feng Junyuan was fine with it, but Song Jun regretted it when he saw Xi Anling was going.

Xi Anling didn’t seem to notice at all. She became happy when she saw Song Jun. She ran over, hugged Song Jun’s arm, and said, “Song Jun, you want to go too. That’s great.”

       Xia Hongshen glanced at her.

Xi Anling noticed Xia Hongshen’s gaze and immediately let go of Song Jun. She put her hands behind her back and did not dare to move casually.

Long Xing turned the car around at the school gate, parked it, opened the trunk and helped them put their luggage. Because he had to drive a long distance, he did not drive out in a police car but instead drove a civilian car that he usually used for work.

Regarding the business trip, Long Xing didn’t think it was very hard but was quite happy. He said that he should treat it as a vacation and go out to relax. He had never been to Yuntong. If he went there, there would be people there to welcome him. The mountain environment was good, and he didn’t have to handle the case himself; he thought of it as a great opportunity.

Long Xing was the driver responsible for driving. Originally, Xia Hongshen was in the passenger seat, and Song Jun, Feng Junyuan, and Xi Anling were in the back seat. However, Xia Hongshen did not agree with Xi Anling sitting next to Song Jun, and Feng Junyuan was unwilling to sit in the middle. As a result, Xi Anling was later given the passenger seat, with Song Jun and Feng Junyuan on the left and right and Xia Hongshen sitting in the middle.

Because he got up too early in the morning, Song Jun began to feel sleepy soon after getting in the car. He dozed off with his head leaning on the car window. When he fell asleep, Xia Hongshen put his hand around his head and let him lean on his own shoulders.

Song Jun found the position comfortable and fell asleep.

When he woke up, the car had already left the city and was driving on the highway.

Xi Anling turned around from the front, took two pieces of bread and handed them to Xia Hongshen. Xia Hongshen gave one to Song Jun and another to Feng Junyuan.

Song Jun hadn’t woken up yet. He rubbed his eyes and took the bread, asking Xia Hongshen, “You don’t want to eat it?”

Xia Hongshen said, “You can eat it.”

Later, Xi Anling gave another one to Long Xing.

Song Jun tore into the bread and ate it while looking out the window. The scenery on the highway was monotonous, and there was nothing to see, but it was better than facing the dull inside of the car.

None of these people spoke much except Long Xing, who had a more lively personality. He would say a few words from time to time and turn on the radio to play music.

A female star’s song was playing on the radio. The female star’s voice was very clear and clean. While listening, Xi Anling started humming along. Song Jun listened quietly, pressed down the car window a little, closed his eyes and took a deep breath of the outside air.

After completing the journey to Yuntong, three-quarters of the way ahead was the highway. As they got farther and farther away from the plains, the surrounding area slowly changed from rolling hills to towering mountains, and the air became colder and colder.

Song Jun opened the window of the car, and his face turned a little red from the wind.

They had lunch at a rest stop next to the highway. The food was not delicious, but it was almost two o’clock in the afternoon, and they only ate one piece of bread in the morning. Everyone felt hungry, and it tasted particularly delicious.

Only Xia Hongshen took a couple of symbolic bites. Song Jun thought he probably wasn’t hungry, or maybe he didn’t need to eat at all to stay alive.

After eating, they continued on the road. This time, they drove for nearly an hour before getting off the highway and then onto the rugged winding mountain road. The speed of the car was greatly slowed down. By the time they arrived at Yuntong County, it was already six o’clock in the afternoon.

Long Xing called the police officer responsible for contacting the county public security bureau, who came and took them to the county public security bureau.

The person in charge of contact was also a young policeman named Lü Hai. He said it was getting late and asked everyone to go to dinner first and hold a small meeting after dinner to explain the specific case to Long Xing and Xia Hongshen.

Dinner tasted better than lunch. After a tiring day, everyone naturally ate more. After dinner, Lü Hai took them to a hotel near the Public Security Bureau to settle down.

The five of them arranged a total of three standard rooms.

Xi Anling definitely wanted to live in a room by herself. Feng Junyuan didn’t want to stay with Xia Hongshen, and he wanted to stay with Song Jun; Song Jun actually didn’t want to stay with Xia Hongshen. In comparison, he would rather live with Feng Junyuan.

But Xia Hongshen obviously didn’t care about their ideas. In the end, Xia Hongshen and Song Jun stayed in one room, and Long Xing and Feng Junyuan stayed in one room.

After putting their things in the hotel room, Xia Hongshen and Long Xing went to the Public Security Bureau to attend the case meeting. Several other people stayed in the hotel to rest because they had nothing to do with the case.

Xia Hongshen and Long Xing were sitting in the small conference room of the county public security bureau.

Xia Hongshen held in his hand an appraisal power of attorney submitted by the Public Security Bureau, which contained simple facts of the case. As a neutral appraiser, all he needed to know was the most basic facts of the case. As for the detailed relationships, he did not need to know yet so as not to form a subjective opinion that would affect the fairness of the appraisal results.

Long Xing was different. Long Xing learned the details of the entire case during his conversation with Lü Hai.

It turned out that the crime occurred in a small mountain village called Wanjia Village, which was nearly 100 kilometres away from Yuntong County. Due to its remote location and treacherous roads, the small mountain village was very secluded, with only a few dozen permanent residents and a population of over two hundred. A teenager’s body had recently been unearthed on the mountain, and it was confirmed to be a child from one of the households, around the age of thirteen.

When Long Xing heard this, he said strangely, “Why not bring the body down for examination? Can’t cars go up the mountain?”

Lü Hai shook his head, “It’s not that simple. The people in the village suspect that their former village chief is the murderer, and the chief’s nephew happens to be the deputy director of our Public Security Bureau. Our colleagues went up the mountain to investigate, but there was no cooperation whatsoever. The villagers are refusing to allow the body to be brought down, and that’s why we’re thinking of getting an external forensic institution to go up the mountain and examine the body. We hope that the results of the examination will persuade the villagers to believe in the findings.”

Long Xing was a little surprised, “That’s quite troublesome.”

Lü Hai nodded, took out a cigarette and handed it to Long Xing. Long Xing waved his hand and refused, saying he didn’t smoke.

Xia Hongshen was still sitting in the conference room, looking through the case information.

Lü Hai peeked his head out from the door and whispered to Long Xing, “So, this is the Forensic Medicine team from C University?”

Long Xing nodded, “He had a doctorate.”

“Doctorate?” Lü Hai said, “Even though he looks like a pretty boy? He is too handsome.”

Long Xing said quickly, “Teacher Xia is very powerful, don’t underestimate him.”

Lü Hai laughed out loud, obviously not listening to Long Xing’s words. He said, “Okay, we will set off tomorrow morning. The mountain road is not easy to walk. Let’s have a good rest tonight.”

       Long Xing nodded.

Chapter 28 – Heartbroken Again

Song Jun hadn’t considered whether he would regret choosing Xianling, but he also felt there wasn’t much time for him to dwell on that.

Since school officially started, the work in the milk tea shop had been adjusted. Song Jun and Xianling started working on alternating days, with their shifts hardly overlapping.

As a result, not only the chances of getting along were reduced but there was also no time for dating in the evening.

When he didn’t need to work, Song Jun simply went to study by himself. He read in the classroom until after ten o’clock, then he packed up and went back to the dormitory.

That day, he finished his evening self-study. On the way to the dormitory alone with his books, Song Jun met Xia Hongshen.

When he saw Xia Hongshen, he didn’t want to go up to say hello. He stopped to look at the road and planned to avoid Xia Hongshen. But then, he saw Xi Anling behind Xia Hongshen.

Song Jun paused for a moment, thinking that their encounter might have been a coincidence, with one walking ahead of the other, and they were not necessarily heading in the same direction. However, soon enough, Song Jun had to dismiss his own assumption.

They were indeed in tandem, but Xi Anling was chasing Xia Hongshen, and Xia Hongshen didn’t seem to pay much attention to her.

Song Jun couldn’t restrain his steps and followed them in their direction.

“There’s no need to follow me anymore,” Xia Hongshen said suddenly and stopped at the same time.

Song Jun then stopped and stayed quietly behind the small flower bed next to her.

Xi Anling looked at Xia Hongshen and asked, “Why don’t you want me to follow you?”

Xia Hongshen turned around and said to her, “I have said many times not to pester Song Jun.”

“Have you said it many times?” Xi Anling looked confused, “When did you say it so many times?” Then, she reached out and hit her forehead in a daze, “I seem to have heard it before, but where did I hear it? I can’t remember. “

Song Jun didn’t understand what the two of them were talking about.

Xia Hongshen walked forward, and Xi Anling chased after her.

So Xia Hongshen stopped again and asked Xi Anling, “Why are you still chasing me?”

Xi Anling was stunned for a moment and said, “Where are you going?”

“Go back to the dormitory,” Xia Hongshen said.

Xi Anling seemed to think about it for a while and then said, “I want to find Song Jun.”

But Xia Hongshen said, “Don’t go to Song Jun. If you pester him again, don’t come to see me in the future.”

Xi Anling’s eyes widened in shock.

Song Jun couldn’t listen anymore. He hurried to Xia Hongshen and asked him, “What do you mean?”

Xia Hongshen didn’t seem to be panicked because Song Jun heard the conversation between the two of them. He listened to Song Jun’s questioning and said, “What I mean is that I’m telling you to separate.”

Song Jun felt that he had probably never been so angry in his life. He reached out and grabbed Xia Hongshen’s clothes. He said, “That’s my girlfriend. What qualifications do you have to tell us to separate?”

Xia Hongshen said, “You are not supposed to be together, and there is no way you can be together, so why waste time.”

Song Jun shook his head. He didn’t want to believe what Xia Hongshen said. He didn’t understand why Xia Hongshen said that. He only knew that he was angry and embarrassed, but he was timid by nature and was not very talkative. He didn’t know what to say at this time, and what words could he use to fight back Xia Hongshen?

At this time, Xi Anling was in a daze.

It was obviously Xi Anling who took the initiative to pursue him at the beginning, but now, Xi Anling didn’t seem to cherish their relationship as much as he thought. Perhaps in Xi Anling’s eyes, he was not as important as Xia Hongshen.

Song Jun was unable to raise his hand to punch Xia Hongshen after all. He pushed Xia Hongshen away and weakly turned to walk in another direction.

“Song Jun?” Xia Hongshen called him.

He shook his head and said, “Leave me alone. I don’t want to see you.”

Without walking too far, Song Jun sat down on the flower bed next to him. It was almost half past ten, and the number of people on the campus became sparse. He was sitting alone by the flower bed, and no one would notice him.

Song Jun wanted to cry, but he was already so old and a man, so he couldn’t shed tears even if he wanted to. He felt very wronged and embarrassed. His feelings for Xi Anling were not that deep, and he was not so sad about breaking up with Xi Anling. It was more about the realisation that, despite having a girlfriend, the feelings weren’t reciprocated as he had assumed. Instead, she had feelings for the person Song Jun himself was interested in, making him feel quite uncomfortable.

He had been studying for graduate school for more than half a year in a daze, and he didn’t even know what he had done.

Song Jun’s eyes were a little red. He hugged his legs with his arms and buried his face in his knees.

       “Song Jun?”

After a while, he heard someone whispering his name.

Song Jun raised his head and saw Xi Anling standing in front of him.

Xi Anling lowered her head and looked at him worriedly.

Not wanting to be too vulnerable in front of women and not wanting to lose his temper with Xi Anling over this matter, Song Jun calmed down and asked, “What else do you want to say?”

“I’m sorry,” Xi Anling said as she sat down next to him.

Song Jun put his face on his hands and said, “You want to break up with me?”

       Xi Anling said nothing.

Song Jun asked again, “Do you like Senior Brother Xia?”

“No,” Xi Anling hurriedly denied, “I like you.”

“Hmph,” Song Jun laughed, “Don’t make fun of me.”

Xi Anling said, “To be honest, I like you very much. Ever since we worked together at the milk tea shop, I think this boy is really cute, and he is my type.”

Song Jun didn’t believe it and said casually, “Then what did you mean by what you said to Senior Brother Xia just now?”

Xi Anling was stunned for a moment and said, “I don’t know, I think he and I probably know each other, but I can’t remember when it was.”

“Do you know each other?” Song Jun suddenly remembered something, so much so that he even forgot to be angry or sad.

Xi Anling looked at him, “Yes, but it’s just a feeling because I can’t recall it.”

Xia Hongshen was a deity. Xi Anling said that she knew him in the past, but she couldn’t remember. It might not be a casual prevarication. It was very possible that she had actually met him in the past.

With this idea, Song Jun’s mind became active, and he asked, “Have you seen him in your previous life?”

“Previous life?” Xi Anling looked at him inexplicably, “Do you believe in this kind of thing? I don’t believe in ghosts and gods.”

Song Jun was choked by her question and didn’t know how to answer.

Xi Anling said, “I just felt that something was attracting me. This feeling was very subtle, so he told me not to go to him or I would feel very scared.”

Song Jun vaguely felt that it might be related to Xia Hongshen’s identity, but he couldn’t figure out what it was. He could only ask Xi Anling for the last time, “Are we breaking up?”

Xi Anling suddenly reached out and hugged Song Jun. She said, “Even if we break up, Song Jun, I still like you.”

Song Jun didn’t need such comfort from her, so he patted her back to signal her to let go, stood up and said, “I understand. I wish you happiness.”

He pulled himself together, determined to use a second romantic involvement to alleviate the pain from his unrequited first love. However, the second romantic endeavour once again came to an end before it even began.

       Really too bad!

When Song Jun went back to the dormitory, he had no energy at all. He opened the door and closed it after entering. He didn’t even come out to wash up.

Xia Hongshen was sitting in front of the computer, spinning a pen in his hand, and heard that there was soon no movement in the next room.

After being immersed in writing a few words and then turning the pen in his hand, Xia Hongshen took off his glasses and stood up. He opened his chair, and at the same time, he transformed into a black cat and ran out of the window.

The little black cat walked around the dormitory and jumped onto Song Jun’s window sill. It discovered that Song Jun had not closed the window today.

It was already spring now, and Song Jun still closed the window when he went to bed at night. He was probably too tired today and forgot about it, so he opened the window and just lay down on the bed to sleep.

The little black cat slipped in, walked to Song Jun’s bed, and got into Song Jun’s bed.

Song Jun was already asleep and was not aware of the sudden intrusion.

The little black cat walked up to him, pressed against his back for a while, then seemed to find it uncomfortable and jumped in front of him. It settled down beside his chest, placing its head comfortably on its paws. The cat snuggled close to Song Jun, and he closed his eyes.

The next morning, when Song Jun got up, the little cat was no longer there. He walked to the window and took a breath of fresh cold air. He thought that spring was here and it would be the season for cats to be in heat. Otherwise, why hadn’t he seen that little black cat for so long? Was the little black cat old enough to be in heat?

After thinking wildly for a while, Song Jun closed the window and packed his things to prepare for the morning class.

This afternoon, two guests came to the Forensic Medicine building.

They were from the Municipal Public Security Bureau. They were here today wasn’t for dissecting a corpse but for a case. They came specifically to submit a letter of entrustment for forensic examination.

Long Xing was sitting in the office of the director of the pathology teaching and research department and couldn’t help but look around. Director Li had already rejected them just now, but the colleague who came with him didn’t give up and wanted to come and ask for his help again.

Director Li still said, “This is really inconvenient. Here, we have forensic examinations to conduct and classes to teach. Going to such a distant place for what could be more than a day, I’m afraid no one would be willing to do it.”

When Long Xing heard that the two of them were still talking, he stood up and walked outside.

He had been to the Forensic Medicine building several times, but this was the first time he had come to the office upstairs. Long Xing walked around looking for the bathroom, but he couldn’t find it. Instead, he found Xia Hongshen’s office.

“Teacher Xia?” As soon as Long Xing saw Xia Hongshen, he immediately greeted him with a smile.

Xia Hongshen glanced at him and asked, “Is something wrong?”

Long Xing nodded, stood by the door and asked, “Can I come in?”

       Xia Hongshen nodded, “Come in.”

Long Xing walked in, looked around Xia Hongshen’s office, and then sat down on the sofa next to him.

“What’s going on?” Xia Hongshen asked him.

Long Xing smiled and said, “Up in the mountains near Yuntong, there’s a case, and currently, the body can’t be brought down. There seems to be some conflict between the local residents and the police. As a result, representatives from the city bureau have come, and they want to entrust Forensic Medicine experts from outside the police system to assist with the examination.”

“Mountain? Yuntong?” The pen in Xia Hongshen’s hand touched his lips lightly.

Long Xing said, “Yes, but when we came here to entrust the task, your Director Li said he couldn’t spare the manpower to go that far.”

Xia Hongshen continued to touch his lips with the end of the pen as if he were thinking about something.

At this time, Long Xing heard his colleagues calling him outside, so he stood up and prepared to leave.

Xia Hongshen suddenly said, “I’ll go.”

“Huh?” Long Xing was a little surprised, “Teacher Xia, are you willing to go?”

Xia Hongshen nodded, “But I have two conditions. See if your police can meet them?”

After hearing this, Long Xing immediately said, “You tell me first, and I will go back to discuss it with them.”

“First,” Xia Hongshen raised a slender finger, “I want to bring three people with me. You can arrange transportation and accommodation.”

       Long Xing said, “Okay.”

Xia Hongshen raised a second finger, “Second, you have to go with me.”

Long Xing seemed to hesitate for a moment but still said, “Okay, I’ll go back and ask them, and I will give you the answer immediately.”

Chapter 27 – Heartbroken

Song Jun spent the first day of the new year in depression. He didn’t even eat breakfast or lunch until dinner time. Xia Hongshen came and knocked on his door.

He didn’t want to open the door to Xia Hongshen at all, so he lay on the bed and pretended to be dead.

After a while, he saw the little black cat looking in from the window.

Song Jun had no choice but to let out a long sigh, get up, open the window, and let the little cat in.

There were too many things in life that could not go as planned. If one insisted on forcing them, more often than not, you would end up empty-handed after a hard struggle. It was better to let go and move on sooner rather than later.

While feeding the cat, Song Jun made up his mind. He decided to put aside these messy thoughts for the time being. While completing his studies seriously, he would go out to find some part-time jobs to try to save more money!

His first love ended before it even started.

Song Jun picked up the little black cat who was eating cat food, put his forehead against its forehead and rubbed it hard. The little black cat struggled a little at first, then calmed down and lay motionless in his arms.

On the second day of the New Year, Song Jun opened the door to his room.

Xia Hongshen, on the opposite side, opened the door immediately.

The awkwardness was still unavoidable, but Song Jun told himself to be calm; he must be calm. He greeted Xia Hongshen with a smile and said, “Happy New Year, Senior Brother Xia!”

Xia Hongshen looked at him without speaking.

Song Jun turned around, closed the door, and walked outside. After stepping onto the stairs, he raised his hand and patted his chest, telling himself to relax and not be nervous.

As soon as the seventh day of the Lunar New Year was over, although the school had not yet started, the closed shops outside gradually began to open for business again. Song Jun learned his lesson this time and did not find a job too far away from the campus. Instead, he found a job at a milk tea shop near the campus.

The owner of the cold drink shop was a middle-aged woman. Seeing Song Jun’s clean appearance, she asked him to greet customers and collect money at the front desk.

Song Jun went there at six o’clock every afternoon, got off work at eleven o’clock, and walked back to campus for a while.

After two days of working at a milk tea shop, another young girl came to work there. That young girl was also from Song Jun campus. She said she was a first-year graduate student in the Faculty of Pharmacy. Her name was Xi Anling.

The young girl was good-looking and cute and had a sweet mouth. After chatting with Song Jun, Song Jun discovered that she was actually Cheng Ruijing’s junior sister.

When Xi Anling first came here, she didn’t understand anything, so she always asked Song Jun obediently what to do this and what to do that.

Song Jun had a good temper and would help her whenever she had a problem.

After spending more than ten days together, the two of them quickly became familiar with each other.

When the school officially started, Bu Hui and Cheng Ruijing returned to campus. One day, Xi Anling asked Song Jun to have dinner together.

Song Jun thought it was a good idea and didn’t refuse. He made an appointment with Bu Hui and Cheng Ruijing, and the four of them had dinner together at a small restaurant outside the campus.

It was fine at the beginning of the meal, but later on, Bu Hui started making jokes about Song Jun and Xi Anling.

Song Jun was embarrassed by what he said and said, “Senior Brother Bu, don’t talk nonsense.”

Xi Anling just smiled obediently and poked at the bowl with her chopsticks.

After dinner that day, Bu Hui went to Song Jun’s room to find him and asked him, “What do you think of Xi Anling?”

Song Jun said, “She’s very cute.”

Bu Hui put an arm around his shoulders, “She didn’t have a boyfriend yet. What are you waiting for?”

Song Jun was stunned when he heard this.

Bu Hui said, “Don’t say that your senior brother isn’t helping you. I’ve already talked to senior sister Cheng to ask her to talk to Xianling. As long as everything is fine on that end, put in some extra effort and be more proactive. I think she finds you quite interesting. Don’t miss out on this.”

After saying that, Bu Hui patted Song Jun’s chest.

Song Jun wanted to say no, but Bu Hui didn’t listen to him and wanted to make things easier for the two of them, “You can give it a try to see if it’s a good fit. If it doesn’t work out, then just let it go.”

“But I…” Song Jun wanted to say that he had just fallen out of love and was not ready for a relationship.

But Bu Hui waved his hand and went to the water room with his own kettle.

Song Jun was struggling hard in his heart. He really didn’t want to get a girlfriend right now. He liked Xia Hongshen. Although he couldn’t say that he liked him to the point of death, the feeling was serious.

Xia Hongshen’s rejection was already obvious to him. He was not stuck in this feeling and couldn’t get out of it, but it didn’t mean that he could go back and be intimate with someone else immediately.

Xi Anling was a very cute girl. If it had been earlier, before Song Jun came to this campus, or before he fell in love with Xia Hongshen, he would have been happy to accept Bu Hui’s proposal, and maybe he would have taken the initiative to pursue Xi Anling, but now…

Song Jun felt very distressed. He would definitely not do what Bu Hui said about taking the initiative to make an appointment with Xi Anling, but Xi Anling might have something in mind, but he had no way to explain it.

Unexpectedly, Xi Anling took the initiative to find Song Jun in his dormitory the next day.

Xi Anling stood at the door of Song Jun’s room, poked her head in and said, “It’s good, one dormitory for one person.”

Song Jun had no choice but to say, “Please come in and sit down.”

Xi Anling was wearing a short skirt and long boots. She was petite and looked very good standing next to Song Jun. No wonder Bu Hui wanted to bring them together.

Song Jun had no reason to reject Xi Anling like this, but the only thing was that he didn’t like Xi Anling. However, he still invited Xi Anling to come in to sit down and pour her a glass of water.

Xi Anling found cat food in Song Jun’s room and was surprised, “Do you have a cat?”

Song Jun said, “No, it’s a little wild cat nearby. It often comes here to eat.”

Xi Anling was a little surprised when she heard this, “You are so kind.”

She spent the afternoon playing in Song Jun’s dormitory, and the two of them had to work together in the evening, so it was natural for them to go to the cafeteria to eat together.

When going out, Song Jun met Xia Hongshen who was coming back from outside.

Xia Hongshen’s eyes fell on Xi Anling.

Song Jun was a little embarrassed at first, but then he thought about it. Why should he be embarrassed? He didn’t owe him anything. Since he was rejected, it didn’t mean he couldn’t pursue a relationship with someone else, right?

Thinking of this, Song Jun felt a sigh of relief in his heart. He nodded to Xia Hongshen, “Senior Brother Xia.”

“Where to go?” Xia Hongshen asked.

Song Jun said, “To go out to eat.”

Xi Anling looked at Xia Hongshen and then smiled at him.

After hearing what Song Jun said, Xia Hongshen didn’t ask further questions and went back to his room.

From that day on, Xi Anling began to frequent Song Jun’s dormitory. Song Jun had always felt that the relationship between the two of them was a bit unclear. To say they were lovers, but they had never confessed their feelings to each other. But it was not like they were ordinary friends; it seemed odd for a female friend to visit a male dormitory so frequently.

But no matter what, Song Jun was in a very passive position in this relationship from the beginning. He often thought seriously and felt that he could consider his relationship with Xi Anling.

One night, neither of them went to work. Xi Anling was surfing the internet at Song Jun’s place. At about nine o’clock, she stood up and prepared to leave.

Song Jun sent her out, and when he walked outside the door, Xi Anling suddenly said to him, “No need to send me off. I can go back by myself.”

Song Jun said, “It’s okay, I’ll walk you.”

Xi Anling stood face to face with him, looked at him and said, “Can I be your girlfriend?”

Song Jun was stunned. Xi Anling hadn’t mentioned this issue for so long. Now that she suddenly mentioned it, Song Jun couldn’t react for a while.

Xi Anling put her hands behind her back, waiting expectantly for his answer.

Song Jun hesitated. He couldn’t bear to refuse, but he was not willing to accept it from the bottom of his heart.

Suddenly, Xi Anling closed her eyes and slowly approached him to kiss him.

Song Jun was stunned. His head was spinning rapidly, hesitating between avoiding or reaching out to push Xi Anling away. Suddenly, a mobile phone came between the two of them, blocking Xi Anling’s kiss.

Xi Anling opened her eyes and saw that it was Xia Hongshen holding a mobile phone in his hand, blocking the two of them.

Song Jun was so nervous before that he didn’t even notice when Xia Hongshen appeared.

Xia Hongshen said, “Stop messing around.”

Xi Anling looked at him with confusion.

Song Jun felt confused at first and didn’t know what was going on. Then he suddenly felt angry and said, “I’m not messing around! I’m serious!”

After saying that, Song Jun held Xi Anling’s hand and said to Xia Hongshen, “She is my girlfriend, and we are officially together.”

Xia Hongshen was not angry or sad; there was no expression that Song Jun expected on his face. He just said in a very calm tone, “You two aren’t suitable for each other.”

Song Jun said, “What’s not suitable? Besides, it’s none of your business!”

After he finished speaking, he took Xi Anling’s hand and walked quickly outside. However, Xi Anling was still a little strange and kept looking back at Xia Hongshen.

With entanglement and depression in his heart, Song Jun made up his mind not to talk to Xia Hongshen anymore. He decided to seriously be in a relationship with Xi Anling. This kind of relationship should be his first relationship, not those hopeless fantasies.

Although he was thinking this, when Song Jun sent Xi Anling back to the dormitory that night, he still felt very uncomfortable and in a really bad mood.

The little black cat hadn’t come to see him for several days. It seemed that since Xi Anling came here often, the little black cat didn’t come often.

He opened the window, but it was dark outside, and he couldn’t see anything. After searching for a while, he couldn’t find the little black cat. Song Jun suddenly felt tired and wondered if love would come, so he closed the window and stopped looking for it.

Chapter 26 – New Year

Yun Po opened the door and saw Feng Junyuan standing outside the door.

Xia Hongshen looked over and asked, “Something wrong?”

Feng Junyuan looked a little unhappy. He looked at Yun Po and asked, “Master, how is Yuanyuan?”

Yun Po opened his mouth to speak but suddenly paused. He closed his mouth, stretched out a hand, and said, “Pay the bill first.”

Feng Junyuan was stunned. He looked at Yun Po in disbelief for a moment and then looked at Xia Hongshen.

Surprisingly, Xia Hongshen did not say a word.

Feng Junyuan suppressed his anger and asked, “How much?”

Yun Po said, “Since we are all acquainted with each other, I’ll give you a 50% discount. Let’s settle it at two hundred.”

After hearing this, Feng Junyuan actually took his wallet from his pocket, took out two hundred yuan, and put it in Yun Po’s hand.

Yun Po accepted the money and was satisfied. He said to Feng Junyuan, “She went to be reincarnated. When she reaches the underworld, there will naturally be a guide. After drinking Meng Po’s soup1is the soup that the dead drink to ‘reset’ themselves, she will forget about her past life and live in peace and contentment in the next life.”

Feng Junyuan felt relieved after hearing what Yun Po said.

Yun Po said, “That cunning old fox was after you guys. He set up a barrier in the hospital with the aim of obstructing Xia Hongshen. The spirit of that young girl lingered in the hospital, and sensing Xiang Wenshi’s intentions, she tried to protect you. However, she almost had her soul shattered by Xiang Wenshi.”

       Feng Junyuan lowered his head.

Yun Po patted him on the shoulder and said, “Forget it. It’s okay.”

After a moment of silence, Feng Junyuan asked, “What is Song Jun?”

As soon as he finished speaking, Song Jun’s door opposite opened.

The conversation between Feng Junyuan and Yun Po stopped, and Feng Junyuan said to Song Jun, “Are you okay?”

Song Jun reached out and touched the wound on his neck, which still ached slightly from time to time.

Xia Hongshen walked out of the room and walked towards Song Jun. He raised his hand and touched Song Jun’s neck with his fingers.

Song Jun suddenly felt a little aggrieved.

Yun Po looked at him and said, “He’s fine. It’s not tainted with demonic energy.”

Xia Hongshen took back his hand.

Yun Po looked at the two of them, then at Feng Junyuan, and suddenly said, “Benefactor Xia, you are enjoying the best of both worlds, living a blissful life. How happy you are. Not like this poor and solitary monk; why don’t you give me one of your treasures?”

Xia Hongshen gave him a cold look.

Feng Junyuan frowned and said, “I’m leaving.” After that, he turned and left.

Xia Hongshen then said to Yun Po, “You can leave too.”

Yun Po didn’t expect to receive money from Xia Hongshen. He was satisfied with getting two hundred from Feng Junyuan. He picked up his phone and raised it, saying to Xia Hongshen, “Keeping track of the accounts.” Then he wandered towards the stair’s direction.

There were only two people left, Song Jun and Xia Hongshen.

Song Jun suddenly became very angry, even sad. He closed the door forcefully without even saying a word to Xia Hongshen.

If he was just a little depressed before, now Song Jun was sad, not because of Yun Po’s joke, but because Xia Hongshen didn’t even speak to refute Yun Po’s words.

Enjoying the best of both worlds? Living a blissful life?

Of course, Song Jun didn’t believe that Xia Hongshen had such intentions. However, he couldn’t help but wonder if he held the same significance in Xia Hongshen’s heart as he thought. If he wasn’t that important, why would Xia Hongshen be so kind to him?

Lying on the bed, Song Jun took the quilt and covered his head. He felt very tired and didn’t want to do anything for a while.

At this time, a little black cat jumped up outside the window. The little black cat stood on the windowsill and looked into the room. It could feel that Song Jun was unhappy, but it was not sure why Song Jun was unhappy.

At times, it felt that the current Song Jun was not the person it used to know. However, when it got closer to him, it could still sense that familiar feeling.

The little black cat walked back and forth on the windowsill twice, then came over with its tail and lay down.

It lowered its head, rubbed its face with its paw, and then rested its chin on its front paw, gazing at Song Jun lying on the bed in a daze.

Song Jun felt that maybe he should keep some distance from Xia Hongshen.

He thought that he and Xia Hongshen were originally from two different worlds anyway. One day, Xia Hongshen would return to the sky, and he would never see him again. In this case, it was better to keep a distance from him from the beginning.

In fact, Song Jun had thought about it so much that he was most concerned about Xia Hongshen’s attitude towards him. This was the first time since he was a child that he had a feeling for someone, and he himself was very passive in everything. If Xia Hongshen really didn’t like him, then he would definitely not pester Xia Hongshen.

Song Jun began to consciously keep some distance from Xia Hongshen. It was not as obvious as last time. After all, it was not as if they could not be friends. However, he always reminded himself that he could not get too deep into this relationship.

He didn’t know if Xia Hongshen noticed it, or maybe even if he did, he didn’t care. At least on the surface, Song Jun couldn’t feel the change in his attitude.

However, the little black cat appeared more frequently. Two nights at night, Song Jun saw the little black cat sneaking outside the window and peeking in. He went over to open the window, and the little black cat jumped away immediately.

Because winter was coming and the weather was getting colder day by day, Song Jun had already taken out the sweaters in the box and put them on, and he would close the dormitory windows at night because the wind blowing in was too cold.

Several times, when the little black cat came, the window was closed. When Song Jun noticed it and opened the window, it jumped away.

The large bag of cat food that Xia Hongshen insisted on buying surprisingly hadn’t been finished even after two or three months.

Unknowingly, it was almost the end of the semester. One day, Xia Hongshen knocked on Song Jun’s door and brought him several sets of test papers. Song Jun saw that they were the test papers from the final exam of his major in previous years.

“Thank you,” Song Jun said to Xia Hongshen.

Xia Hongshen shook his head and went back to his room without saying anything.

The final exams weren’t particularly challenging for Song Jun, especially since several of them were open-book exams. Except for molecular biology, it was unlikely for him to fail any other courses.

But when the final exams were over, even graduate students started to leave school and prepare to go home for the Spring Festival2Chinese New Year.

During the Spring Festival in previous years, Song Jun would go back to his grandma. Even if his grandma’s children didn’t like him, as long as he was with grandma, it wouldn’t be a big deal for him to feel a little wronged.

But this Spring Festival, he had nowhere to go.

Shortly before the New Year, even Bu Hui finished his internship at the hospital, packed up, and went home to celebrate. However, Song Jun noticed that Xia Hongshen had no plans to leave the school.

Yes. Xia Hongshen was not an ordinary human being at all. How could he still have a home, let alone go home to celebrate the New Year?

But no matter what, the fact that Xia Hongshen was still around made Song Jun feel a bit better. He even began to plan, thinking that on New Year’s Eve, he could invite Xia Hongshen to spend time together. After all, watching the Spring Festival’s Gala alone felt quite sad.

Sometimes Song Jun got curious, wondering if Feng Junyuan went home to celebrate the New Year? Xia Hongshen didn’t have a family, so Feng Junyuan shouldn’t have one either.

On the twenty-fourth of the twelfth lunar month, it started to snow on New Year’s Eve. In this southern city, snow was a rare thing. Song Jun opened the window at night and saw the snowflakes falling in the night sky, and his mood became better.

The little black cat ran up to his window sill at this time.

Song Jun smiled and reached out to hug it in.

There were a lot of snowflakes on the little black cat’s fur, which quickly turned into water droplets as soon as it entered the house. Song Jun wiped it with a towel. Because he was in a good mood, he picked it up and kissed its forehead.

The little black cat looked at Song Jun with its crystal eyes, seemingly in a daze.

Song Jun put it down, went to find a bowl to pour cat food into, and opened a bag of Whiskas bags for it.

The little black cat was very satisfied with this meal. After eating, he lay on his side on the ground, rolled over, and licked his lips.

Song Jun felt this was good. At least he had a little thing to accompany him from time to time, and he didn’t seem so lonely alone.

Seeing that New Year’s Eve was coming, Song Jun knocked on Xia Hongshen’s door one day in advance and invited him to spend the New Year with him.

Xia Hongshen, of course, did not refuse.

Song Jun said, “I don’t think there won’t be anything to eat outside tomorrow afternoon. Let’s go to the supermarket to buy some food and then cook it ourselves in the evening.”

Due to limited conditions, the two of them couldn’t prepare elaborate dishes. However, even when eating instant noodles, they made sure to add a couple of extra sausages to turn it into a delicious meal.

This winter seemed to be particularly cold, with some light snow sporadically falling for several days in a row.

When the two of them went out on the afternoon of the 30th, it was still snowing, and Song Jun was wearing an adventure hat. The supermarket was not far outside the school, and the two of them walked there. When he was walking beside Xia Hongshen, Xia Hongshen would always reach out to pull the tip of his hat from time to time.

Song Jun found Xia Hongshen’s mischievous behaviour a bit amusing and exasperating. He reached out to protect his hat, saying, “Senior Brother Xia, stop fooling around.”

Inside the supermarket, Song Jun grabbed a shopping cart to buy groceries. His plan was to cook a small hotpot, allowing them to both cook vegetables and have some warm soup on a cold winter day.

Song Jun wanted to buy ribs to make soup, but Xia Hongshen stood at the fish stall and stared at it for a long time.

Song Jun went over to stand next to him and asked, “Want to eat fish?”

Unexpectedly, Xia Hongshen replied, “Don’t want to.”

Song Jun thought it was strange that he didn’t want to.

He stood next to Xia Hongshen, looked at it, and said, “Then why don’t we buy a fish to make soup?”

Xia Hongshen looked at him and said, “Buy it if you like.”

Song Jun was a little angry for a moment, but he still carefully picked a fish and asked the supermarket salesperson to help him weigh and scale it.

Most of the others were vegetarian dishes, and Song Jun felt a bit concerned about the money. When paying the bill, Xia Hongshen stood beside him and showed no intention of paying the bill. Song Jun took out his wallet and paid, thinking that he might avoid eating out with Xia Hongshen next time.

However, Xia Hongshen didn’t stand by and watch when it was time to make dinner. He could do everything, including chopping vegetables, boiling soup, and flavouring, and he was quite good at it.

Song Jun bought a few bottles of beer in the supermarket, opened them, and drank with Xia Hongshen.

Xia Hongshen seemed to have a better alcohol tolerance than Song Jun. When Song Jun wanted to drink with him, he drank without saying a word. However, as Song Jun’s face turned bright red and he became somewhat incoherent, Xia Hongshen still maintained his initial calmness.

Seeing that Song Jun was drunk, Xia Hongshen stood up, picked him up, and put him on the bed.

Just when he was about to let go of Song Jun, Song Jun suddenly hugged Xia Hongshen tightly, came closer, and kissed him on the lips.

After the kiss, Song Jun’s face turned red. He didn’t know if it was because of shyness or being drunk, but Xia Hongshen didn’t react at all. He put Song Jun on the bed, stood up, and pulled the quilt to cover Song Jun.

Song Jun suddenly felt extremely embarrassed and pulled up the quilt to cover his head, not wanting to see Xia Hongshen again.

Chapter 25 – Thousand Years Lamp

When Song Jun saw Xia Hongshen appear, he subconsciously stood behind Xia Hongshen. However, Feng Junyuan was still wary of Xia Hongshen. He returned to the operating table and looked at the weak Zeng Yuanyuan.

By now, both Song Jun and Feng Junyuan could sense that the ghost of this little girl did not seem to want to hurt them but rather protect them.

Perhaps her purpose was to stop the two of them and prevent Xiang Wenshi from finding them.

As for who Xiang Wenshi was and what his purpose was, Song Jun had no clue. The only thing he was sure of was that he believed in Xia Hongshen.

Xia Hongshen’s voice was cold, and he said to Xiang Wenshi, “Who are you? You dare to covet my people.”

Xiang Wenshi frowned slightly, “Your people? Do you mean Song Jun or Feng Junyuan?”

Xia Hongshen said, “They’re all mine.”

Song Jun heard this and looked at Xia Hongshen in shock.

Feng Junyuan retorted, “Who is yours!”

Xiang Wenshi sneered twice, “You are a little too greedy.”

       Xia Hongshen snorted lightly.

Xiang Wenshi said, “If you want Song Jun, give me Feng Junyuan.”

Xia Hongshen reached out to clasp Xiang Wenshi’s throat, “Wishful thinking.”

Xiang Wenshi hurriedly backed away and raised his hands to block Xia Hongshen. He put the fingers of his hands together in front of his chest, then raised his hands to both sides, erecting a barrier in front of him.

Xia Hongshen turned his palm into a sharp point and used spiritual power to split his barrier.

Xiang Wenshi stepped back and erected barriers in front of him one after another.

Xia Hongshen then raised his hand and said, “Fengliu!”

Feng Junyuan didn’t even have the chance to refuse; the golden light shimmered and transformed into gilded phoenix wings, falling into Xia Hongshen’s hands.

Xia Hongshen waved his gilded phoenix wings and cleaved throughall the barriers that Xiang Wenshi had erected one after another.

As Xiang Wenshi stepped back, his body suddenly changed and turned into a huge red fox in front of everyone. The fox was dexterous and ran away quickly to avoid Xia Hongshen’s slashing edge. It then landed next to Song Jun.

Song Jun couldn’t avoid it, and Xiang Wenshi wrapped his body around him with his fox tail and then ran quickly out of the corridor.

Xia Hongshen immediately chased after him but hesitated to swing the gilded phoenix wings carelessly for fear of hurting Song Jun.

Song Jun wanted to struggle, but the wide and fluffy fox tail wrapped tightly around him, and there was no way he could escape from Xiang Wenshi’s grasp.

Xiang Wenshi quickly ran out of the operating room with him on his back and then ran along the corridor to the end, trying to rush out of the closed door and escape from the building.

However, when he bumped into it, he felt strong resistance and blocked himself back.

Xia Hongshen walked towards him slowly and said, “Do you think you can escape?”

Xiang Wenshi instantly transformed into a human form. He held Song Jun’s wrist with one hand and pinched Song Jun’s neck with the other. He said to Xia Hongshen, “Aren’t you afraid that I will kill him?”

“Not afraid,” Xia Hongshen replied, raising his hand and stabbing the gilded phoenix wings towards Xiang Wenshi but still avoiding Song Jun.

Xiang Wenshi suddenly dug his fingernails into Song Jun’s neck.

Song Jun felt a wave of intense pain, looking at Xia Hongshen but unable to utter a word.

       Xia Hongshen withdrew the weapon.

Xiang Wenshi laughed, “He may not die, but I can make him suffer.”

“Demon fox,” Xia Hongshen said, “What exactly do you want?”

Xiang Wenshi said, “Give Song Jun to me and let me go.”

Xia Hongshen said, “I told you, it’s just wishful thinking.”

Xiang Wenshi sneered, “Demon Zhen1Zhenniao, often simply zhen, is a name given in many Chinese myths, annals, and poetry to poisonous birds that are said to have existed in what is now southern China, you are just a demonic beast that just cultivated an immortal body. Why is it just wishful thinking for me?”

Xia Hongshen said calmly, “With your cultivation level, you can’t control him at all. Even if you manage to obtain him, you shouldn’t harbour illusions of seizing his spiritual power. It’s likely to backfire, and you might end up being harmed by his vicious energy.”

“I don’t believe it!” Xiang Wenshi said.

Song Jun was dizzy and couldn’t hear what they were saying at all. His neck hurt, and he felt that Xiang Wenshi’s nails were about to pierce his throat. He was still a little sad because Xia Hongshen was standing opposite him but had no intention of saving him.

Xia Hongshen said, “In fact, there is no need for him at all. If you want to know, I can hand over the Fengliu to you so you can find out for yourself once you try it.”

Xiang Wenshi looked at the gilded phoenix wings with golden light flowing in Xia Hongshen’s hand and suddenly hesitated.

Xia Hongshen raised his hand, ran his fingers across the sharp blade of the gilded phoenix wings, and then said to Xiang Wenshi, “I have sealed its form. You can take it and try.”

After saying that, Xia Hongshen raised his hand and threw the gilded phoenix wings to Xiang Wenshi.

Xiang Wenshi reached out to receive the gilded phoenix wings but did not let go of his hand on Song Jun’s throat. However, the moment he held the gilded phoenix wings, he suddenly felt a cold wind coming.

In fact, it was not a cold wind at all, but the spiritual energy of the gilded phoenix wings gathered into a sharp edge and struck Xiang Wenshi’s body.

Xiang Wenshi didn’t even feel pain but felt a chill before his body was split in half by the gilded phoenix wings.

At the moment of death, Xiang Wenshi transformed into his original form. The huge fox body fell to the ground, and blood spread on the ground.

Song Jun had already fainted, and without the support of Xiang Wenshi, his body immediately slid to the ground.

Xia Hongshen stretched his body, transformed into a giant beast shape, and used his body to cushion Song Jun. Then he turned his head and gently rubbed his soft forehead against Song Jun’s body.

When Song Jun woke up, he was already lying in the doctor’s duty room of the thoracic surgery department. He sat up, feeling a little confused at first. Later, he found himself unsure whether the events that had occurred earlier were real or just a dream.

After a while, Feng Junyuan opened the door and walked in.

Song Jun looked at him with a questioning look on his face. Feng Junyuan sat down by the bed and said, “Xiang Wenshi is dead.”

Song Jun’s eyes widened in shock.

Xiang Wenshi was split in half by Xia Hongshen with gilded phoenix wings, and the demon body was also taken away by Xia Hongshen. Now, no one in the hospital knew why Dr. Xiang had suddenly disappeared. There was originally an operation in the afternoon, but he could not be found temporarily, so they had to arrange for another doctor to perform the operation.

Song Jun knew that it was not a dream, that everything really happened.

He reached out and touched his neck, which was wrapped in gauze.

Feng Junyuan asked him, “Are you okay?”

Song Jun did not answer but asked, “Where is the little girl?”

Feng Junyuan lowered his head, “Yuanyuan is already dead, but she still has some attachment, so she refuses to leave. Xia Hongshen said he would find someone to transcend Yuanyuan.”

As soon as he finished speaking, a nurse ran over and knocked on the door, saying with a surprised look on his face, “Doctor Feng, there is a monk outside looking for you.”

       Monk?

Somehow, Song Jun immediately remembered someone.

He got off the bed and followed Feng Junyuan out. He saw a monk in a Buddhist robe standing in front of the nurse’s station. It turned out to be the monk Yun Po whom he had met once. Song Jun still had the business card that Yun Po gave him at that time, as well as the talisman paper that was given to him, which he had been carrying with him all the time.

However, the talisman paper didn’t seem to be of much use. Song Jun still encountered various strange encounters for a long time.

When Yun Po saw Song Jun and Feng Junyuan, he immediately came over. He greeted Song Jun and said, “Is Young Benefactor well?”

Song Jun suddenly felt a little panicked and quickly responded, “I’m fine, thank you for your concern, Master.”

Yun Po looked at him with a smile for a while and then said to Feng Junyuan, “Where is the place where the little girl died? Take me to see it.”

Feng Junyuan was stunned and said, “It’s in the operating room. There’s no way to get in now.”

Yun Po said to him, “It doesn’t matter; it can be done outside. Take me there. My time is very precious, and you will be charged more for overtime.”

Feng Junyuan glanced at Song Jun and seemed to think that Yun Po was a little unreliable. But since it was Xia Hongshen who called… Feng Junyuan hesitated for a moment and said to him, “Follow me.”

Yun Po followed Feng Junyuan and walked towards the elevator.

Song Jun reached out and touched his neck and did not go with them again. He had not forgotten why he came to the hospital today. He went to the clinical laboratory to get a blood sample, sent it back to the lab, and then went directly back to the dormitory to rest.

He hadn’t had lunch yet, but he felt like he had no appetite.

After returning to the dormitory, he went to the water room and washed his face.

Just as he poured out the water in the basin, he heard someone’s footsteps going up the stairs.

Song Jun looked towards the corridor outside and saw Monk Yun Po coming upstairs. When he reached the second floor, he saw Song Jun first, smiled and waved to Song Jun before walking straight to the door of Xia Hongshen’s room and knocking on the door.

The door opened quickly. Yun Po entered Xia Hongshen’s room, and then the door suddenly closed from the inside.

Song Jun felt depressed for no reason, poured the water out of the basin, and went back to his room.

When Yun Po saw Xia Hongshen, he raised his hand to wipe the sweat from his forehead and said, “The security guard in the hospital almost kicked me out.”

Xia Hongshen glanced at him, “What did you do?”

Yun Po said, “I performed a ritual to guide that little girl’s soul, sending her to the cycle of reincarnation. She lingered in the hospital for too long, reluctant to leave, and it took quite an effort on my part. As for your little friend, not adorable at all. When security showed up, he just ran off, leaving me alone to be chased up two floors by the security guard.”

Xia Hongshen said, “That’s how Fengliu is.”

Yun Po stood up and came to Xia Hongshen’s side, “That fox demon had considerable cultivation. It’s worthwhile that he died at Feng Junyuan’s hands. But did you manage to retrieve his inner core?”

“You want his inner core?” Xia Hongshen asked, “I’m afraid I can’t give it to you. His inner core has already been absorbed by the fragments of the Thousand Years Lamp.”

Yun Po was stunned when he heard this.

Xia Hongshen reached into his pocket and took out a glass fragment, which looked exactly the same as the two fragments he had before. One of them was made into a mobile phone chain and given to Song Jun.

“Tsk, tsk,” Yun Po reached out and wanted to snatch it from Xia Hongshen’s hand, but Xia Hongshen retracted his hand and avoided it.

Yun Po said, “It truly deserves to be a dowry of Princess Mei Ling. The spiritual energy of the Thousand Years Lamp is indeed incomparable to ordinary immortal treasures.” But then he added, “If Xiang Wenshi hadn’t obtained these fragments, his cultivation wouldn’t have advanced so rapidly, and he wouldn’t have dared to scheme against Song Jun. In retrospect, the Thousand Years Lamp seems more like an ominous object.”

Xia Hongshen took the fragments back and said, “Thousand Years Lamp are all completed.”

       “Three pieces?” Yun Po asked.

Xia Hongshen nodded, “The lamp holder and wick are the ones still left in the mortal world.”

Yun Po looked at him for a moment and said, “You are not in a hurry to find the Thousand Years Lamp at all, are you? You have been wandering around the world for such a long time. How come you haven’t found them all now if you really want to find them?”

Hearing this, Xia Hongshen glanced at Yun Po and said, “What I’m looking for is not the Thousand Years Lamp in the first place.”

Yun Po frowned, then suddenly realised, “Oh—”

Before he finished speaking, there was a knock on the door of Xia Hongshen’s room.

Three updates are complete!

Notes:
Lololol, I can’t help to imagine Yun Po running because he was chased by security guard, and Feng Junyuan was like NAWP, you’re on your own

Also, cultivation genre was never my strong suit, so the cultivation terms I translated might be wrong, but feel free to correct me in the comments~

Chapter 24 – The Little Girl

Song Jun could not imagine what kind of accident would cause the hospital to seal up the entire staircase, but under these circumstances, he was not in the mood to inquire in detail with Feng Junyuan.

This staircase suddenly appeared here, and it was an obvious trap waiting for them to step into.

However, even if they didn’t go, there seemed to be no other better option.

Feng Junyuan suddenly took a step forward, and Song Jun grabbed his hand.

Song Jun was not a person who liked taking risks, but Feng Junyuan was different. He preferred to face danger head-on. Even if it might not end up well, it was better for him than waiting at the same place.

Feng Junyuan said to Song Jun, “You go back and wait.”

He always believed that he was the one who got Song Jun into trouble, that the little girl was against him, and that Song Jun was just innocently dragged in.

Song Jun was a naturally kind-hearted person. The more Feng Junyuan said that he didn’t want to implicate him, the more worried he became about Feng Junyuan. Finally, he let go of Feng Junyuan’s hand and said, “I’ll go with you.”

Feng Junyuan did not refuse him, and the two of them walked towards the stairwell.

As soon as he stepped in, Song Jun saw a little girl wearing a patient’s uniform sitting on the steps with her back to them at the bottom of the stairs, humming softly.

Feng Junyuan also stopped at this time, glanced at Song Jun, and then said to the little girl, “Are you Zeng Yuanyuan?”

       The little girl stopped humming.

       Feng Junyuan walked towards her.

“Yuanyuan,” Feng Junyuan said as he walked down the stairs, “Do you hate me? Do you want to seek revenge on me?”

The little girl raised her hand and hooked her fingers through her long hair and shook it gently.

Feng Junyuan walked up to her and reached out to touch her shoulder. The little girl suddenly disappeared from there.

Song Jun looked at Feng Junyuan’s movements and felt extremely nervous. At this moment, he suddenly felt someone tugging at the hem of his clothes. He turned around and saw the little girl standing next to him, pulling on the hem of his clothes and looking up at him with her pale little face.

Song Jun was immediately frightened and took two steps back, almost falling down the stairs. Fortunately, he held on to the handrail in time.

The little girl took a step forward to pull him, but suddenly, her eyes widened, and her expression became distorted. She raised her hands to cover her chest as if she was in pain.

Song Jun took the opportunity to run towards Feng Junyuan, grabbed Feng Junyuan’s hand, and ran downstairs.

Feng Junyuan glanced back at the little girl but did not stop and ran downstairs with Song Jun.

The two of them ran three floors, and then they saw the little girl blocking their way. She stretched out her arms and held them back, refusing to let them pass.

Song Jun gasped, grabbed Feng Junyuan’s arm and pulled forward hard.

Feng Junyuan was almost knocked down by him and said, “What are you doing?”

Song Jun said, “Can’t you transform? Why don’t you change quickly at this time?”

Feng Junyuan suddenly became furious and yelled at Song Jun, “I can’t! I don’t know what’s going on!”

After saying that, Feng Junyuan pulled Song Jun back to the upper floor, pushed open the stairwell door, and entered the corridor.

After walking to the corridor, Feng Junyuan stopped because he found that this floor was the operating room.

Compared with other inpatient floors, the operating room was more closed and dark, without any light.

Feng Junyuan and Song Jun sat down against the chairs beside the corridor wall, and Song Jun sensed that Feng Junyuan was a bit furious.

He didn’t spend much time with Feng Junyuan, but he knew that Feng Junyuan was a person with a bad temper. At this time, the two of them didn’t know where to go, so Song Jun asked Feng Junyuan, “When did you start seeing those things?”

Feng Junyuan leaned his head against the wall and said, “Since I was little, I don’t remember when.” After that, he added, “It’s not like I can see everything; I can just see things from time to time.”

Song Jun said, “I only saw those things when I came here to study. Last time you said I was marked, did you also see something?”

Feng Junyuan looked at him and said silently, “I saw the scratches on your face. I know that they are not visible to ordinary people. It was a mark left by evil spirits.”

Song Jun subconsciously raised his hand and scratched his face, “I think demons and ghosts like to haunt me. I don’t know why.”

Unexpectedly, after hearing what he said, Feng Junyuan said, “Me too.”

Song Jun took a long breath, “What should we do now?”

Hearing this, Feng Junyuan stood up and suddenly shouted, “Zeng Yuanyuan, come out! If you want revenge, come at me. Don’t play tricks on us like this!”

After speaking, Feng Junyuan pushed open the door of the operating room and walked inside.

Of course, Song Jun didn’t want to wait alone. He followed Feng Junyuan in and saw Feng Junyuan running inside, opening the operating room doors one after another, looking for the little girl.

Song Jun thought he was going crazy, but there was nothing he could do to stop him at this time.

When Feng Junyuan pushed open a door in front of him, he suddenly stopped.

Song Jun followed, stood next to Feng Junyuan and looked into the operating room. He found that there was someone inside and an operation was being performed.

Feng Junyuan looked at the people on the operating table in a daze. The person lying on it was clearly a little girl, and among the people standing next to him, one of them was Feng Junyuan.

This was an operation that had happened in the past. During this operation, a little girl named Zeng Yuanyuan stopped breathing and passed away from the world she had briefly lived in.

Feng Junyuan watched the people next to the operating table unplug the little girl’s intubation, remove the anaesthesia needle, and suture her surgical incision. When all this was done, the people beside the operating table left silently, including himself, who was standing there. A minute later, he also left from the operating table.

The little girl was the only one left on the operating table, and the lights dimmed. She had stopped breathing, and suddenly, her chest began to rise and fall as if she was in pain.

She held her chest and began to breathe heavily, then slowly sat up from the operating table, turned sideways, jumped down, and walked towards Feng Junyuan’s direction with difficulty.

Song Jun originally wanted to speak, but when he saw Feng Junyuan standing motionless, he fell silent again. He felt that Feng Junyuan was probably not as indifferent to the death of the little girl as he appeared on the surface.

When Song Jun was very young, he had once dreamed of becoming a doctor. Sometimes, when his grandmother wasn’t feeling well, he would accompany her to the hospital and think that if he could become a doctor, he could prescribe medication for her. As he grew older, many of his childhood dreams became less realistic, and in the end, he didn’t choose that path.

He didn’t feel like he had anything to regret, but at this time, he felt that he could understand Feng Junyuan’s mood.

The little girl walked to Feng Junyuan. He squatted down, raised his hand to touch the little girl’s hair, and said, “I’m sorry, Doctor Feng can’t save you.”

The little girl raised her head, looked at Feng Junyuan, and suddenly stretched out her hand and handed him something.

Song Jun saw that it was a paper crane made of sugar paper.

Feng Junyuan was stunned for a moment and said, “This is the paper crane I folded for you. Do you like it?”

The little girl just looked at him with innocent eyes.

Feng Junyuan said to her, “If you like it, should I fold it for you again?”

The little girl didn’t speak, but in the next moment, her expression suddenly became ferocious.

Song Jun was startled, thinking that the little girl wanted to hurt Feng Junyuan, but he didn’t expect the little girl to reach out and cover her chest with a very painful expression.

“Yuanyuan?” Feng Junyuan called her name.

The little girl took two steps back, leaned against the operating table, and slid to the ground.

At this time, Song Jun heard the sound of footsteps coming from outside. It was the sound of leather shoes, pacing neither hurriedly nor slowly, neither lightly nor heavily, echoing towards their direction.

The little girl raised her head as if someone was holding her throat.

As the footsteps approached, Song Jun suddenly felt nervous. He subconsciously retreated towards the operating room and then listened to the footsteps until the sound walked to the door of the operating room. Then Xiang Wenshi appeared at the door of the operating room.

He didn’t know why, but when Song Jun saw Xiang Wenshi at this time, he didn’t feel at all at ease.

Xiang Wenshi seemed slightly relieved when he saw Song Jun and Feng Junyuan. He said, “So you are here. Come with me quickly.”

Song Jun did not move but glanced at Feng Junyuan.

Feng Junyuan stood up and said to Xiang Wenshi, “Teacher Xiang? Why are you here?”

Xiang Wenshi said, “I know something happened to you, and I came to pick you up.”

Song Jun didn’t believe him at all and was also afraid that Feng Junyuan would believe him easily, so he immediately asked, “How did you know?”

Before Xiang Wenshi could speak, suddenly the little girl appeared at his feet and grabbed one of his feet. He frowned slightly.

Song Jun felt something was wrong, and he looked at Xiang Wenshi, “Who are you?”

Xiang Wenshi seemed to suddenly lose patience to continue acting. He raised one hand, and the little girl immediately displayed a distressed expression as if she were being choked.

Then Xiang Wenshi raised his hand, and the little girl’s body was thrown away.

Song Jun heard Xiang Wenshi say, “Someone like you also want to stop me?”

Feng Junyuan shouted loudly, “What are you doing? Let her go!”

Xiang Wenshi smiled and said, “She’s just a little kid who doesn’t know any better. If you bear it, I won’t hurt her.”

Song Jun slowly retreated to Feng Junyuan, “Who are you? What do you want to do?”

Xiang Wenshi spread his hands, “Don’t be afraid, xiao Jun. I just want to take you somewhere with me.”

“Where?” Before Song Jun spoke, another voice asked.

Xiang Wenshi’s expression suddenly changed, but Song Jun suddenly felt relieved when he heard the voice. He shouted loudly, “Senior Brother Xia!”

Xia Hongshen appeared behind Xiang Wenshi. He raised his hand, and the little girl’s body, which Xiang Wenshi had just thrown away, flew into the air. She was held up by Xia Hongshen and placed gently on the operating table.

Xiang Wenshi stared at Xia Hongshen, “How did you enter the barrier I set up?”

Upon hearing this, Xia Hongshen gave a cold chuckle, “Someone like you want to stop me?”

Chapter 23 – Power Outage

On Friday, Song Jun had to go to the hospital to get the second batch of blood samples.

He returned relatively early this time, but upon arrival, the girl from the clinical laboratory he had contacted had something to attend to and said she would come later. Other members of the clinical laboratory team advised him to come in about half an hour, by which time the girl should have arrived.

Song Jun thanked them and exited the clinical laboratory department, thinking the time was too short to go back to the lab. Instead, he decided to find a place to sit in the garden outside on the first floor for a while.

As soon as he walked to the small garden, Song Jun met Feng Junyuan, who was going to deliver blood samples for blood crossmatching.

Feng Junyuan said to him, “Why don’t you go to my office and sit for a while.”

Feng Junyuan was a somewhat awkward person. After getting along with him, Song Jun had almost figured out his character. Also not very talkative, Feng Junyuan was much more difficult to get along with than Xia Hongshen, but once he got to know him, he found that he was not as cold as he seemed on the surface.

Song Jun still didn’t know why Feng Junyuan wanted to disrupt the middle of the 7th month Hundred Ghost Parade. But he knew that Feng Junyuan could see ghosts just like him. This feeling was not very pleasant. Maybe he had difficulty controlling his emotions at that time.

He took Song Jun to his office, and Feng Junyuan poured him a glass of boiled water from a paper cup.

Seeing Feng Junyuan sitting in front of the computer issuing medical orders, Song Jun leaned over to take a look and asked, “Are there any surgeries scheduled for today?”

Feng Junyuan shook his head, “Not for my bed.”

He was talking about the bed he was in charge of. The bed number that Song Jun saw he was giving medical orders to was No. 15. If he remembered correctly, Feng Junyuan said that Bed No. 15 was the bed number of the little girl who died.

When he thought of the little girl who died on the operating table at a young age, Song Jun couldn’t help but feel a little uncomfortable. He said, “Have you ever thought about finding a Dharma Master to help her transcend?”

Feng Junyuan stopped typing and said nothing, but Song Jun saw his hesitant expression.

“Ah!” A scream suddenly came from outside the office.

Song Jun and Feng Junyuan looked at each other, stood up and walked out of the office at the same time.

There was a lot of noise outside, and a circle of people gathered around the nurse’s station. A patient covered his arm and said he had seen a ghost.

This patient was the patient of bed no. 15 under Feng Junyuan’s care. He was admitted to the hospital yesterday and has not yet undergone surgery. He said that he heard a child crying all night last night. He went to the toilet, but as soon as he opened the toilet door, he saw a child’s hand pulling the door tightly from the inside.

Everyone in the circle around the nurse’s station turned pale when they heard this, obviously frightened. Of course, there were also those who didn’t believe it and said he was talking nonsense.

The patient then rolled up his sleeves and said, “Look, he was caught by a ghost.”

Everyone looked over and saw a blue mark on his wrist, which was shaped like a child’s palm.

Song Jun and Feng Junyuan looked at each other.

An old lady next to me said, “Oh, that’s really creepy. Bed no.15 is that little kid who died under Dr. Feng’s table, right?”

Everyone around looked towards Feng Junyuan. The patient in Bed no.15 said, “Doctor Feng, can you change my bed? I’m afraid I’m haunted by a ghost.”

“Where did the ghost come from?” Suddenly, a man came out of the doctor’s duty room and said loudly, “Don’t talk nonsense here. There are no ghosts in this world.”

Feng Junyuan turned around and saw that the person walking over was the chief resident.

The chief resident said, “Don’t make the hospital look like a park. Everyone should go back to the ward and don’t surround the nurse’s station.”

       The patients then dispersed.

The attending physician asked Feng Junyuan, “Have you finished issuing the doctor’s orders?”

       Feng Junyuan nodded.

The chief said, “Just do what you have to do; don’t get involved.”

After saying that, he walked towards his office.

Song Jun looked at Feng Junyuan and wanted to persuade him not to pay attention, but when he thought that the little girl did exist, he couldn’t help feeling a little chilly and didn’t know what to say.

Feng Junyuan said, “I’ll go to Bed No. 15 to have a look.”

Just as he finished speaking, there was a sudden power outage in the corridor.

There were wards on both sides of the corridor extending from the nurse station, and there was only a small balcony at the end of the corridor, so the lighting was very poor. Once the power went out, the eyes that were accustomed to bright light could not adapt to the darkness for a while, and it would be as if it were pitch black.

Both the nurses and the patients cried out in surprise as if they had not expected that there would be a sudden power outage in the hospital.

Generally speaking, even if there were a power outage in a hospital, there would be a backup generator to ensure the operation of various medical instruments.

However, the power had gone out but did not come back on immediately.

Feng Junyuan and Song Jun were standing there. They had just adapted to the dark environment of the corridor when they heard a patient’s scream from a ward in front.

That voice was the voice of the Bed no. 15 patient who had just said he had seen a ghost.

Feng Junyuan immediately ran in that direction. Seeing this, Song Jun quickly followed.

The ward was a double ward with beds number 15 and 16. Because it was a shared ward, the doors of hospital wards were generally not locked, but at this time, the door of this ward was closed.

Feng Junyuan pushed the door, but it didn’t open.

It wasn’t that it wasn’t locked, but more like someone was pushing the door from the inside.

Feng Junyuan pushed hard again, and the door opened slightly. He suddenly let go of his hand, and the door was closed again.

Song Jun was standing next to Feng Junyuan. He could clearly see half of the child’s grey-blue face emerging from the gap, looking out with one round eye.

Feng Junyuan looked at Song Jun, and Song Jun asked him, “Did you see it too?”

“Yeah,” Feng Junyuan said, “it was her, the child who died on the operating table, named Yuanyuan.”

Song Jun felt a little numb in his back.

However, unexpectedly, Feng Junyuan suddenly hit the door with force.

The door to the ward was suddenly knocked open by him. Feng Junyuan walked in and saw no sign of the little girl. Not only was the little girl missing, but even the original patients in the fifteen or sixteen beds were gone.

There was a large window in the ward, which was much brighter than in the corridor outside.

Song Jun followed Feng Junyuan in and looked at the bathroom with the door open but saw no one.

“What’s going on?” Song Jun asked.

Feng Junyuan shook his head, “I don’t know.”

They were all a little dazed and stood in the ward for a while. Feng Junyuan even walked to the window and took a look outside.

Suddenly, Song Jun said to him, “Don’t you think it’s quiet outside?”

Feng Junyuan was stunned and turned to look at him.

It was really quiet outside, so quiet that it was a little abnormal. It was noisy when the power went out, but now there was no sound at all.

Song Jun and Feng Junyuan walked towards the corridor outside, one after another. When they came out, they saw that the entire corridor was empty, and there was no one.

The patient and his family were gone, as were the nurses and doctors. The entire thoracic surgery department was silent as if they were the only two people left.

Song Jun and Feng Junyuan both knew something was wrong. Of course, it wasn’t that everyone here suddenly ran away, but that the two of them were probably blocked off from reality by some force, like that time when they saw a hundred ghosts walking at night by the river.

“What should we do?” Song Jun asked.

Feng Junyuan was silent for a moment and said, “Get out of here first?”

“I…” Song Jun was about to speak. He always felt that something was wrong with the atmosphere, that maybe they couldn’t leave here easily. But before he could speak, he suddenly heard a girl’s laughter coming from the end of the corridor.

Both of them turned around and saw the little girl, Yuanyuan, hiding behind a door. She stuck her head out to take a look at them. When she saw them looking over, she quickly retracted her head.

Feng Junyuan said, “That’s the stairs over there.”

Song Jun was stunned and then said, “She doesn’t want us to leave.”

Feng Junyuan looked a little confused, “Why?”

Song Jun shook his head. How could he know why.

Knowing that the little girl was trying to stop them, Feng Junyuan had no intention of trying. He said, “Let’s go back to the office first.”

The two men returned to the doctor’s office.

Song Jun walked behind and reached out to lock the door.

The current situation reminded him of what happened in the lab at that time. He still remembered that the female ghost was pestering him, making it impossible for him to leave.

But this time, it didn’t feel so scary. Maybe it was because there was an extra person, Feng Junyuan, and Song Jun knew that Feng Junyuan was not an ordinary person and that those ordinary ghosts and demons should not be able to hurt him.

There were also windows in the doctor’s duty room, and the light outside was bright. Song Jun stood at the window and looked outside, but there was no one in the bustling hospital.

“Does she want to kill me?” Feng Junyuan suddenly asked.

Song Jun said softly, “I don’t think so. She’s just a child, and maybe her parents don’t understand what’s going on with her life. I believe she wouldn’t be unaware of it herself.”

‘Drrk drkk drrk’ The two of them heard a sound coming from outside at the same time, like the sound of a nurse pushing a cart walking down the corridor.

Song Jun stood still and didn’t move.

Feng Junyuan walked to the door, opened it slightly and looked outside. He saw a nurse’s work cart sliding slowly in the corridor, but no one was pushing it.

“Let’s go,” Feng Junyuan said suddenly, “I don’t want to wait here any longer. No matter what she wants to do, I’m not afraid of her.”

       Song Jun hesitated.

Feng Junyuan said, “Then you wait here alone. She should be here for me, and it has nothing to do with you.”

Even if it really had nothing to do with him, Song Jun couldn’t let Feng Junyuan face it alone. He took a deep breath and said to Feng Junyuan, “Let’s go, I’ll go with you.”

Feng Junyuan opened the door, stood by it waiting for Song Jun to come, and walked out with him.

The cart was still slowly coming in their direction. The two of them were walking forward, and the cart slid in front of them and suddenly stopped.

Feng Junyuan and Song Jun walked around the cart and continued walking forward.

Suddenly, Feng Junyuan stopped and looked at a staircase that appeared out of thin air on the side of the corridor.

Song Jun naturally saw it too and couldn’t help being stunned and asked, “Were there stairs here?”

Feng Junyuan said, “Yes, but it has been stopped and sealed early.”

       “Why?” Song Jun asked.

“Because I heard there seemed to be an accident,” Feng Junyuan said solemnly.

Chapter 22 – Meow Meow

On Wednesday night, Bu Hui, who rarely had free time, made plans to go out for dinner with Song Jun.

Bu Hui was interning at the hospital recently and had some disputes with the department director, and the other party was kind of trying to obstruct his internship. Because of this matter, Cheng Ruijing had another quarrel with him and asked him to go find the other party and give him a gift to apologise. Even with Bu Hui’s optimistic and cheerful personality, he felt depressed. When he returned to the dormitory in the afternoon, he met Song Jun, so he took him out to have dinner with him.

Song Jun also had something on his mind. Although he felt that his problems were nothing compared to Bu Hui’s, under the influence of Bu Hui, he felt even worse.

Bu Hui ordered several bottles of beer and complained to Song Jun about recent troubles while drinking.

Song Jun, of course, didn’t bring up his own matters. He simply listened to Bu Hui while unconsciously consuming a considerable amount of alcohol.

Later, when he came out after paying the bill, Bu Hui was walking in front. Suddenly, he ran a few steps faster and threw himself next to the trash can to vomit.

“Huh?” Song Jun felt a little dizzy and wanted to follow him, but he stumbled on the edge of the steps and almost fell to the ground.

Fortunately, someone caught him from behind.

Song Jun was hugged from behind, and he didn’t react for a moment. He looked back blankly, only to see that the person holding him was Xiang Wenshi.

“Teacher Xiang?” Song Jun first wondered why he saw Xiang Wenshi here, but he didn’t realise that this posture seemed a bit ambiguous.

Xiang Wenshi smiled at him and said, “Be careful.”

       Song Jun said, “Thank you.”

Xiang Wenshi let go of him but still held one of his arms and said, “Are you drunk?”

Song Jun felt a bit embarrassed; he had indeed drunk a lot. While not completely intoxicated, his mind was a bit muddled. Feeling uncomfortable with Xiang Wenshi holding his hand, he tried to pull away. But he didn’t expect that the other person’s grip was very tight; he flinched but couldn’t break free.

Xiang Wenshi asked him, “Where are you going? I’ll take you off.”

Song Jun suddenly remembered Bu Hui, and he turned around to look for him, “Where is Senior Brother Bu?”

Unexpectedly, Xiang Wenshi grabbed him and refused to let him leave.

Song Jun was confused and looked at Xiang Wenshi, “Teacher Xiang?”

“Teacher Xiang,” at the same time, another cold voice suddenly sounded.

Song Jun and Xiang Wenshi turned around at the same time and saw Feng Junyuan walking in their direction.

Xiang Wenshi finally let go of Song Jun’s hand and said to Feng Junyuan, “Xiao Feng, what a coincidence.”

“Yeah,” Feng Junyuan said softly. He was still wearing slippers, his hair was slightly damp, and he was holding a plastic bag in his hand as if he had just come out to buy something after taking a shower.

Song Jun had a headache and hit his forehead with his hand.

Feng Junyuan walked up to Song Jun and said to him, “Are you going to come back to the dormitory with me?”

Song Jun was a little afraid of getting entangled with Xiang Wenshi again, so he nodded and turned around to find Bu Hui.

Seeing this, Xiang Wenshi said, “Then you all go back together. I’ll leave first, so be careful.”

       Feng Junyuan didn’t answer him.

Xiang Wenshi smiled and waved, turned and left.

At this time, Song Jun saw that Bu Hui had finished vomiting and was holding a tree with one hand while talking on the phone. He got closer and heard that Bu Hui was calling Cheng Ruijing, so he didn’t disturb him.

When he returned here, he saw Feng Junyuan still standing there waiting for him.

Song Jun shook his head and said, “That Teacher Xiang is a bit weird.”

Feng Junyuan just shook his head, and it was unclear what he was thinking.

The two stood for a while. After Bu Hui finished his phone call, he came over and told Song Jun to leave him first.

Song Jun was a little worried about him and asked, “Senior Brother, are you okay alone?”

Bu Hui patted him on the shoulder, “Xiao Jing will be here soon. You go ahead, I’m fine.”

After Song Jun heard this, he felt relieved and said to Feng Junyuan, “Let’s go.”

It was getting dark, but there were still people playing soccer on the field. They probably intended to continue under the lights when it got even darker.

Song Jun and Feng Junyuan sat by the football field for a while.

The injury on Feng Junyuan’s face had not completely healed, but the gauze had been removed. Song Jun held his face with his hands and secretly turned his head to look at Feng Junyuan, thinking that it would be a pity if there were scars on such a beautiful face.

“I saw that little girl,” Feng Junyuan said suddenly.

Song Jun was stunned and then realised that the little girl Feng Junyuan was talking about was probably the one he saw in the shower room that day.

Feng Junyuan’s tone was very calm. He said, “There is an operation this afternoon, and it was a bit complicated. By the time the surgery was done, it was already quite late. The operations in other operating rooms have been completed, and the lights have been turned off.”

His voice was so soft that Song Jun felt a little scared.

“I went to take a shower first when I came out. After finishing, I realised I had left my glasses in the operating room. So, I went back to retrieve them. By then, everyone had already left, and all the operating rooms were empty, pitch black inside, with only the cold operating tables. When I returned to our operating room from the afternoon, I found that the door was closed. I pushed it open and saw someone lying on the operating table.”

Song Jun sobered up from the alcohol almost instantly.

Feng Junyuan stretched out his hand and grabbed his hair, “That someone looked like a child. Because the light was very dark, I couldn’t see clearly. The patient from the surgery we performed in the afternoon was an adult man, definitely not a child and he had been sent away long ago. It suddenly struck me that the operating room was the same one where we operated on the little girl from Bed Fifteen, who had passed away. Then, I saw the person on the operating table sit up, turn around, legs hanging over the edge of the table, trying to climb down…”

       Song Jun asked, “What then?”

Feng Junyuan looked at him, “Then I got scared, closed the door and ran away. I didn’t even take my glasses.”

Although it was still evening and the surroundings were very lively, Song Jun felt the cold atmosphere from Feng Junyuan’s words. He couldn’t help but wince and asked, “Is it her?”

Feng Junyuan said, “It should be her.”

Song Jun was silent for a moment, “Why did she come to you?”

Feng Junyuan shook his head and said after a while, “Maybe it’s because I killed her.”

“Don’t say that,” Song Jun said, “It’s not your fault.”

Feng Junyuan raised his head, looked at the football player in the distance, and suddenly asked Song Jun, “Do you want to eat a skewer?”

“Huh?” Song Jun was stunned when asked.

Feng Junyuan picked up his plastic bag, and Song Jun realised that he had bought a bag of grilled skewers.

“You haven’t had dinner?” Song Jun asked him.

Feng Junyuan nodded, “I came directly from the operating room.”

Song Jun said, “I’m not eating. I ate a lot just now; take your time.”

Feng Junyuan silently lowered his head and continued eating.

Song Jun sat for a while and suddenly remembered what Xia Hongshen said about being careful about Xiang Wenshi. He said to Feng Junyuan, “You have to be careful of that Teacher Xiang.”

Feng Junyuan glanced at him, “Huh?”

Song Jun didn’t know what happened, so he could only say, “I don’t know, Senior Brother Xia said it.”

At this moment, someone on the field took a powerful shot, but the ball went astray, flying in their direction.

Because it was too dark, Song Jun didn’t notice it at first. He only saw Feng Junyuan next to him raise his hand as if to block the soccer ball. As a result, the whole ball broke in half from the middle and fell to the ground.

Song Jun was a little dazed, and Feng Junyuan was also stunned. He looked down at his hands, wondering what he had done.

The soccer ball players came over to pick up the ball, but they never thought that Feng Junyuan had cut the ball. They stood there in confusion for a long time, not knowing what happened.

“Not bad,” a voice suddenly said behind them.

“Senior Brother Xia!” Song Jun stood up suddenly.

Feng Junyuan also stood up and turned around to look at Xia Hongshen, who suddenly appeared behind them.

Xia Hongshen said to Feng Junyuan, “Remember the sensation in your body; those things won’t dare to come near you casually in the future.”

Feng Junyuan looked at Xia Hongshen for a while, his eyes a little fierce, and then turned and left without saying a word.

Song Jun looked at Feng Junyuan’s leaving figure and said to Xia Hongshen, “He seems to reject you.”

Xia Hongshen said ‘hmm’ and looked indifferent.

Song Jun wanted to ask something, but he was afraid that Xia Hongshen would dislike him for being nosy, so he didn’t ask.

“There’s no more cat food in your room,” Xia Hongshen said suddenly.

Song Jun was confused and didn’t understand why he mentioned this. He hesitated and said, “Because I only bought a small bag, and the kitten has a big appetite. But how did you know?”

Xia Hongshen said, “I saw it last time I went to your place.”

Song Jun couldn’t react for a moment. He had forgotten the last time Xia Hongshen went to his room.

Xia Hongshen asked him, “Are you going to buy it?”

“Ah?” Song Jun was stunned for a moment, then said, “Oh, let’s go then.”

The two of them walked towards the outside of the football field. Xia Hongshen came close to his neck and smelled it, “Have you been drinking?”

Song Jun always felt that this action was a bit ambiguous and said sheepishly, “I drank a little with Senior Brother Bu.”

Xia Hongshen asked him, “Why didn’t you call me?”

Song Jun was unsure how to respond to the question. He thought to himself that it was Senior Brother Bu’s treat, and he didn’t ask him to come over, so how could he bring it up? After hesitating for a moment, he didn’t answer Xia Hongshen’s question.

Fortunately, Xia Hongshen stopped asking any more questions, and the two of them walked towards the supermarket outside the school.

Song Jun was choosing cat food in front of the pet supplies aisle. He planned to continue buying the brand he bought last time because the little black cat liked to eat it.

However, since the little black cat didn’t visit often, he hesitated and decided to buy a small bag so it wouldn’t spoil if left unused for too long.

Xia Hongshen stood behind him and reached for a large bag on the shelf above.

“It’s too big!” Song Jun said.

Xia Hongshen ignored him, put the cat food into the trolley, and then reached for a large bag of tuna whiskas.

Song Jun was going crazy, “Have you seen the cat? Why are you taking care of it so much?”

Xia Hongshen stopped and turned to look at him, “You don’t like it?”

Song Jun said “Uh… I like it, but the treatment is too good. I haven’t eaten that well myself.”

Xia Hongshen said, “You can eat it with it.”

Song Jun said helplessly, “Forget it, I haven’t reached that level of craving yet. Buy it, go buy it, just go buy it…”

In the end, he carried back big and small bags full of food for the kitten. He thought to himself that Senior Brother Xia was so strange. He had never even seen the cat, and yet he was so kind to it. In comparison, he didn’t treat him that well; Xia Hongshen didn’t even think of getting him some snacks.

He didn’t realise that Xia Hongshen was actually genuinely thinking that they could eat together, but he obviously wouldn’t appreciate that.

Chapter 21 – Xiang Wenshi

Dr. Xiang’s full name was Xiang Wenshi. He was one of the most handsome bachelors in the C University Affiliated Hospital, known as the golden bachelor. Of course, these were all things Song Jun heard from others later.

However, Song Jun felt quite comfortable getting along with Xiang Wenshi. He was the youngest deputy chief physician of the Thoracic Surgery Department, but he didn’t put any airs at all when getting along with them. He has a friendly attitude, and his speech and behaviour were also very charming.

Song Jun actually wanted to be a doctor, but he felt that he didn’t have the mental capacity to bear that kind of pressure. So when he saw Xiang Wenshi looking elegant in a white coat, he unconsciously felt a bit envious, but of course, Song Jun felt that no one could wear a white coat better than Xia Hongshen.

Lunch was eaten in the hospital cafeteria. Xiang Wenshi ordered three one-pot stir-fries with his meal card. For Song Jun, it was indeed an improvement in his food.

Although the three of them were sitting in the corner of the cafeteria, they still attracted attention. Song Jun didn’t notice it at first, but later, he found that the nurses at several tables were looking at them, and he suddenly felt a little embarrassed.

Xiang Wenshi had been chatting with them.

Feng Junyuan still looked in a bad mood. He was originally a sensitive person and was not very good at dealing with interpersonal relationships. Even when Xiang Wenshi took the initiative to talk to him, he looked listless.

However, Song Jun felt otherwise; at least, he thought it wasn’t very polite. As a result, most of the time, it was him and Xiang Wenshi who were talking.

Xiang Wenshi talked about some hospital and academic matters, and Song Jun also listened with interest and felt very interested.

After eating, Song Jun went back to the inpatient building with them, took a blood sample, and planned to leave.

Before leaving, Feng Junyuan actually said ‘thank you’ to Song Jun.

Song Jun was stunned for a moment and reflexively asked, “What?”

Feng Junyuan immediately turned away, “It’s nothing.”

Song Jun raised his hand and scratched his head, “Be careful yourself.”

He thought of the little girl and her parents, who wouldn’t let go of Feng Junyuan.

Feng Junyuan touched the gauze on his face and said softly, “Hmm”.

Back in the lab, Song Jun collected the blood samples, looked at the experimental results, opened his mouth and yawned. After eating, he wanted to sleep. He stretched and decided to go back to the dormitory to take a nap before talking about it in the afternoon.

At the door of the dormitory room, Song Jun was taking out the key to open the door when he suddenly heard the sound of breathing in his ears.

Because the distance was so close, he was frightened to the point he dropped the key. He suddenly turned around and realised it was Xia Hongshen.

Song Jun pressed his chest, “Senior Brother Xia, are you going to scare me to death?” What he said was not an exaggeration at all. Having seen strange things in the hospital in the morning, his mental endurance was a bit fragile now.

Xia Hongshen didn’t react at all. He moved his head close to his neck, seeming to be inhaling and smelling his scent.

       “Huh?” Xia Hongshen said.

Song Jun felt a little embarrassed and a little strange, “What’s wrong?”

Xia Hongshen smelled it for a while, then suddenly raised his head and said, “What a strong and unpleasant smell.”

Song Jun suddenly opened his eyes in disbelief and looked at Xia Hongshen with his face flushed. He didn’t understand what Xia Hongshen meant.

After saying that, Xia Hongshen left his side and went back to her room.

Song Jun stood at the door for a long time, then picked up the key and went back to the room. The first thing he did was to take off his clothes and smell them. His clothes had just been changed today, and they only smelled like soap.

But he was so concerned about Xia Hongshen’s words that he couldn’t help but take a kettle and take a shower in the water room.

After taking a shower, Song Jun suddenly felt a little chilly.

Before he knew it, it was already the end of September, and it was already October, and the weather was getting colder and colder. A lot of things had happened this summer since he entered school. When he thought about it now, it felt like it was a lifetime ago.

At noon that day, Song Jun sent text messages to several close classmates at the university one by one to ask how everyone was doing.

After receiving the reply, Song Jun smiled, raised his arms and stretched his body, planning to spend these three years of graduate school life well.

After getting up from a nap, Song Jun knocked on Xia Hongshen’s door on his way out. He was startled by him at noon and forgot to tell him about Feng Junyuan. Now that he remembered it, Song Jun decided to tell Xia Hongshen.

After hearing this, Xia Hongshen said, “Hmm” calmly.

Song Jun felt a little strange, “Aren’t you going to help him? Is he not your—” He couldn’t find the right words to describe the relationship between them.

Xia Hongshen said, “It doesn’t matter, he will be fine.”

After listening to this, Song Jun suddenly thought that Feng Junyuan was so powerful that it was indeed not easy for those ghosts and demons to harm him. Since Xia Hongshen believed in him so much, there was no need to worry too much, so he nodded, “Okay, I understand.”

After a weekend like this, Song Jun didn’t hear any more news about Feng Junyuan from the hospital. He thought that the little girl’s parents probably just couldn’t figure it out for a while, and it might be fine after it passed.

On Monday, Song Jun had classes all morning.

He sat in the classroom all morning, and by the time he got out of class, it was almost time for lunch.

Coming out of the classroom with books, Song Jun met Xiang Wenshi, who was coming out of the next classroom.

“Teacher Xiang?” Song Jun greeted him proactively when he saw him.

Xiang Wenshi held a water glass and a computer bag and smiled at Song Jun, “What a coincidence? Are you in class?”

Song Jun nodded, “Teacher Xiang is here for class?”

Xiang Wenshi said, “That’s right, to teach the clinical undergraduates.”

Song Jun smiled and couldn’t think of anything to say, so he asked, “Teacher Xiang, are you going to eat?”

He just asked casually, but he didn’t expect Xiang Wenshi to answer him, “Okay, let’s go eat together.”

Initially, it was he who had invited first, so Song Jun found it difficult to refuse. In fact, he didn’t really want to go to dinner with Xiang Wenshi. It was not that he didn’t like Xiang Wenshi but that Song Jun had a timid personality. When dining with someone he didn’t know well, he couldn’t help but find a topic to talk about, and he would always feel uncomfortable.

On the way to the cafeteria, Xiang Wenshi said that he forgot to bring his meal card. Song Jun quickly said, “It doesn’t matter, I’ll treat you today.”

He was too embarrassed to treat others to a bad meal, so Song Jun asked Xiang Wenshi to find a seat while he queued up for a small stir-fry meal.

There were a bit too many people at the small stir-fry side. Song Jun stood at the end of the queue and took out his phone to check it out while queuing.

Suddenly, a hand was put on his shoulder, and Xia Hongshen asked in his ear, “Is the food good?”

Song Jun quickly turned around and asked, “Senior Brother Xia?!”

Xia Hongshen looked expressionless and asked him, “Who are you inviting to dinner?”

When he asked this, Song Jun knew that he probably saw him and Xiang Wenshi entering the cafeteria together and quickly said, “That is the clinical teacher. He didn’t bring a meal card, so I invited him to have a meal.”

       “Oh,” Xia Hongshen said.

Song Jun suddenly felt that he was probably unhappy.

Xia Hongshen put a hand on Song Jun’s shoulder and had no intention of leaving, but he didn’t say anything else.

Song Jun asked, “Would you like to eat together?”

       Xia Hongshen said, “Oh.”

Song Jun was getting a bit frustrated.

Song Jun simply asked Xia Hongshen to help him wait in line for the stir-fries and went to order two more dishes. When he returned to the table, Xiang Wenshi stood up when he saw Xia Hongshen.

“Huh?” Song Jun felt that Xiang Wenshi’s reaction was a little too much, “Teacher Xiang?”

       Xiang Wenshi smiled at him.

Song Jun quickly introduced Xia Hongshen to Xiang Wenshi, “This is a senior fellow student from my college. He is a doctoral student in pathology; his name is Xia Hongshen. And this is Director Xiang from the Thoracic Surgery Department.”

Xia Hongshen looked at Xiang Wenshi coldly.

Song Jun noticed Xia Hongshen’s gaze, felt that he was a little impolite, and carefully pulled his sleeve.

But he didn’t expect Xiang Wenshi to suddenly say, “Just received a call. There’s an emergency surgery that came up suddenly. I won’t be able to join you for this meal. Thank you, student xiao Song.”

Song Jun was stunned, “So urgent?”

Xiang Wenshi smiled and said, “I’ll treat you to dinner next time when I get the chance.” After saying that, he took his things, turned around and walked towards the cafeteria door.

Song Jun still didn’t react, so he put the food on the table and said to Xia Hongshen, “Only the two of us can eat it.”

Xia Hongshen sat down opposite him.

Song Jun saw that Xia Hongshen didn’t seem very happy, so he reached out and put a chopstick of fish into his bowl. Song Jun decided to get this fish on the spur of the moment after seeing Xia Hongshen.

He bit his chopsticks and suddenly asked, “Senior Brother, are you a cat?”

Xia Hongshen raised his eyes to look at him.

Song Jun suddenly remembered that the Night Patrol God had said before that Xia Hongshen was a monster. What kind of monster? Song Jun started thinking and said in surprise, “Senior Brother, are you a cat demon?”

Xia Hongshen’s expression didn’t change at all, and he didn’t answer him at all.

But Song Jun was used to it. He said, “There are often little wild cats that break into my dormitory. I’ll introduce you to them next time.”

Xia Hongshen hit him on the head with his chopsticks.

       Song Jun smiled.

“Be careful of that person,” Xia Hongshen said suddenly.

“Huh?” Song Jun was confused, and then he reacted, “You mean Teacher Xiang?”

Xia Hongshen picked up the bowl, picked up the fish, put it into his mouth and chewed it slowly.

Song Jun was pained by the fact that he only spoke halfway and asked, “Why should I be careful about him? Are you saying I can’t have contact with him?”

Xia Hongshen said, “You can decide it yourself.”

Song Jun was stunned. He picked up the bowl to take two mouthfuls of rice and then said to Xia Hongshen, “That Teacher Xiang is the director of Feng Junyuan’s internship department.”

Xia Hongshen picked up another piece of fish with chopsticks and ate it slowly and methodically. He just nodded slightly and didn’t say anything.

At night, Song Jun opened the window and felt the cool breeze outside blowing on his face, so he took a deep breath, climbed up to the window and sat with his legs hanging outside the window sill.

Song Jun felt that Xia Hongshen liked him, but sometimes, he felt that Xia Hongshen’s attitude was unclear, and he had no idea what the other person was thinking.

       “Ah—” Song Jun suddenly shouted.

A little black cat on the square roof opposite who was about to jump over seemed startled. He paused as if he was about to jump over and then suddenly rushed over and jumped in from the eaves above the first-floor window into Song Jun’s arms.

Song Jun was startled by it, and he breathed a sigh of relief after seeing clearly that it was the black cat.

The little black cat changed its direction, sat down on his lap, and looked out the window with him.

Song Jun touched its head and sighed secretly.
