Chapter 59: Goodbye
On the day of the blessing ceremony, Fu Sha arrived at the Phoenix Clan’s territory.
“Phoenix,” he said, “I have something to discuss with this black dragon. Could you give us a moment?”
The blessing ceremony was about to start, and the surrounding phoenixes were bustling with preparations for the feast. Su Muluo, upon hearing this, glanced at the dragon next to him and said, “His name is Long Ling.”
“Also, can’t whatever you want to say be said here?”
“There are some things related to the Dragon Clan that are not suitable to discuss here,” Fu Sha replied. “Don’t worry. After what happened last time, I’ve thought it through and won’t do anything to him.”
Su Muluo frowned slightly, clearly not convinced. Just as he was about to refuse, Long Ling spoke up, “Phoenix, let me go. After all, he can’t do anything to me.”
Fu Sha: “……”
Su Muluo and Long Ling exchanged glances. After a few seconds, Su Muluo said, “Alright, but don’t go too far. You must return within fifteen minutes.”
After all, this was the Phoenix territory. He didn’t believe Fu Sha would dare to do anything to Long Ling here, but some precautions were still necessary.
Long Ling nodded and left with Fu Sha.
Outside the Phoenix territory not long after, Long Ling looked at Fu Sha with indifference and said, “What is it?”
Fu Sha looked him up and down and didn’t answer the previous question. Instead, he said, “Do you know what Su Muluo means to his people?”
Long Ling raised an eyebrow slightly but remained silent.
Fu Sha continued, “The first phoenix in the world once possessed the power of Nirvana. For her, there was no death, only rebirth. Later, this same phoenix created the current Phoenix Clan, but for some reason, she gave up her Nirvana power, ended her life, and chose to return to death.”
Long Ling said, “I know that.” The phoenix had told him about this when he was young.
“Then you should also know that since the death of the first phoenix, for thousands of years, no other phoenix born from her has possessed the power of Nirvana,” Fu Sha said. “Except for Su Muluo—the only white phoenix in the Phoenix Clan and the only phoenix born with the power of Nirvana.”
“His existence is as significant to the Phoenix Clan as the first phoenix was. If he has descendants, they are likely to inherit the power of Nirvana as well… This means the Phoenix Clan would regain what it has long lost.”
When Long Ling heard Fu Sha’s words, he wasn’t thinking about the so-called Nirvana power but rather about Su Muluo’s potential descendants.
If phoenixes had offspring, would they be a bunch of fluffy little birds? As adorable as phoenixes?
No, phoenixes can’t reproduce. If he has descendants, it means he and someone else…
At this point, Long Ling’s eyes darkened slightly and he asked, “What exactly are you trying to say?”
“What I want to say is already quite clear,” Fu Sha said. “Regardless of whether Su Muluo has descendants, his status among his people is extremely special. He could even be the key to the Phoenix Clan regaining the power of Nirvana—so do you think they would allow you to be with him?”
Fu Sha had more to say and wanted to deliver a full blow to the black dragon before him. However, Long Ling calmly looked at him and said, “They would.”
“A while ago, I told them I wanted to marry the phoenix. They even encouraged me to go for it.”
Fu Sha: “……”
Long Ling wasn’t lying. This happened just a few days ago, and he had said it in front of Su Muluo and Shuang Li—of course, shortly afterward, he was made to stand outside the small building for a full fifteen minutes, amidst Shuang Li and the others’ applause and cheers.
“Why do you think other phoenixes care about the power of Nirvana as much as you do?” Long Ling said. “The phoenixes here are all very nice. They aren’t like you and don’t have so many crooked thoughts.”
Although he had only met Fu Cha twice, he felt extremely uncomfortable around him… like the kind of person who would resort to lowly means to achieve his goals.
Anyway, he was nothing like the phoenixes who had watched him grow up.
Upon hearing Long Ling’s words, Fu Cha’s eyes flashed with obvious anger. Just as he was about to retort—
Boom!
In an instant, countless heavenly thunders descended from the sky, as if an upside-down sea poured down, with a deafening roar that engulfed the entire Phoenix territory in an instant!
The scene was terrifying beyond words, with thousands of white thunderbolts resembling monstrous dragons weaving through the air, creating dazzling flashes of lightning. Wherever the thunder struck, all things perished, turning night into day, yet resembling a scene from hell.
“…”
Upon witnessing this, Long Ling couldn’t react at all. His mind went blank, and he stood frozen in place, as if nailed down and unable to move.
At that moment, he even thought he was dreaming, as everything seemed so unreal, like a scene from a dream.
But soon, he snapped out of this nightmare, and as he finally realized what was happening, he felt like he had plunged into an icy abyss, his whole body shivering with cold, even his bones freezing.
The phoenix… his phoenix… and the others…
Long Ling trembled all over, followed by an overwhelming rage. Without hesitation, he transformed back into his original form and roared as he charged towards the rolling heavenly thunder—
However, at the same time, an invisible and irresistible force instantly spread out, forming a thick barrier that enveloped the Phoenix territory. Outsiders couldn’t enter nor could they see what was happening inside.
It was as if the person who brought down the heavenly thunder was hypocritically merciful, targeting only one clan and sparing the innocent. It was also like an ugly fig leaf, preventing outsiders from seeing the massacre he had wrought upon the Phoenix clan, unaware of their demise.
But the Black Dragon still didn’t stop. Its eyes burning crimson, it roared fiercely, repeatedly crashing against the barrier as if driven mad.
Such impacts felt like mountains collapsing, shaking the earth within a hundred miles—yet the barrier remained unmoved, until the Black Dragon’s flesh and blood blurred, showing no signs of breaking.
Fu Cha observed all this with immense astonishment at first, then a wave of intense fear surged within him. Without lingering, he transformed into a golden dragon and fled at the fastest speed without looking back.
Afterwards, it seemed like an eternity passed, perhaps minutes, perhaps days. The heavenly thunder subsided, and the barrier silently dissipated, leaving only the Black Dragon lying in a pool of blood on the ground. Its red eyes reflected the devastated Phoenix territory after the thunder calamity—
Once exquisite buildings now lay in ruins, once perennially blooming flowers were gone.
The high platform erected for the ritual was now empty, devoid of the sumptuous feast and fresh fruits.
The Phoenixes who had been preparing for the grand banquet with laughter and joy… all gone.
Only torrential rain continued to pour down, unable to wash away the air filled with the stench of blood and burnt flesh. The land cracked and darkened like charcoal, the entire Phoenix territory lifeless and devoid of any vitality.
The Black Dragon’s eyes widened in agony, letting out a hoarse and mournful cry, vomiting large amounts of blood.
Boom!
A thunderous roar streaked across the night sky, briefly illuminating the Phoenix territory. It was in that moment that the Black Dragon saw a figure with white hair and robes lying in a corner.
Its pupils contracted abruptly. Without hesitation, it transformed back into human form, gritting its teeth as it crawled over and embraced the person.
Although his once sleek and beautiful black hair had turned white, Long Ling recognized him from his back alone.
It was Su Muluo… his Phoenix.
Trembling, Long Ling gently touched Su Muluo’s cold face. For a brief moment, he had some hope, but the next moment, he almost despaired upon realizing that Su Muluo’s Phoenix aura was weak, and his demonic energy was dissipating bit by bit.
The unique power of Nirvana, belonging solely to Su Muluo, had been completely exhausted.
During the recent thunder calamity, he was the only one in the Phoenix territory not struck by the heavenly thunder.
He watched helplessly as his people were swallowed by the thunder— from the elder who had held his hand since childhood, to Frost Li whom he had known for many years, and even Ying Shu who liked to make faces at Frost Li, along with all the other clan members who had accompanied him all the way, all turned into nothingness amidst the thunderous deluge.
He exhausted all his strength, even the power of Nirvana that could have brought him back to life… yet he couldn’t save a single person.
At that moment, Su Muluo felt all hope slipping away. He felt his life slipping away, his soul drifting aimlessly above the Phoenix territory.
He saw Long Ling, covered in wounds but still holding him up— but in his spiritual state, he had lost all emotions, and watching this scene felt like watching a dream unrelated to himself.
At that moment, all he could think was, thankfully, this little dragon had survived.
—However, the next moment, he felt as if he were being watched. He looked up and saw a pair of cold eyes in the sky.
Those eyes seemed oblivious to Su Muluo’s soul, staring down coldly at his barely breathing body, filled with disappointment and disgust.
But soon, the expression in those eyes changed.
At the same time, Su Muluo felt a powerful force pulling him, dragging him slowly back into his body—
The dazed state of his spiritual form dissipated, and emotions surged back. Su Muluo’s eyes widened in disbelief as he saw dark energy seeping from Long Ling’s body. This dark energy flowed into him like Long Ling’s very life, restoring the color to his pale, withered face.
His spiritual form was no longer under his control but was forcibly dragged back. At the moment his soul and body were about to fully merge, he looked up again and saw that the eyes in the sky had a look of joy, closely watching Long Ling—
Suddenly, Su Muluo seemed to realize something. He glimpsed something he shouldn’t have seen from those eyes, a chill running up his spine. He tried to warn Long Ling to stop immediately—but in his spiritual state, he couldn’t speak.
A second later, Su Muluo was fully back in his body. After briefly feeling Long Ling’s tight embrace and warmth… he lost consciousness.
What followed was several days of deep sleep. In his dreams, Su Muluo saw his clan members coming one by one to bid him farewell. Some smiled at him, while others watched him silently.
Ying Shu made a face at him as usual, and the elder gently stroked his hair. The last to come was Frost Li, who squatted in front of Su Muluo and sighed.
“Clan leader, don’t blame yourself,” Frost Li said. “It wasn’t your fault. The Phoenix clan’s fate was sealed, and no one could change it.”
Su Muluo looked at him. Perhaps because it was a dream, despite his reddened eyes and the thousand things he wanted to say… he couldn’t cry out or utter a single word.
“Remember not to stay up too late, wear more clothes in winter, and don’t be too eager for coolness in summer,” Frost Li muttered. “We’re not around to remind you, so I’m saying a few extra things now. Don’t get annoyed.”
He paused, then recalled something, and added, “Oh, and Long Ling will take good care of you!”
After saying this, he quietly watched Su Muluo for a while, giving him a reassuring smile. “We’re leaving now. Don’t be sad, and don’t think about us too much. Life is long, and there will always be separations.”
“—Clan leader, goodbye.”
Frost Li stood up, waved at Su Muluo, and, behind him, all the Phoenixes turned and slowly walked away.
—When Su Muluo woke up, his face was already streaked with tears.
Immediately, he was tightly held in someone’s embrace. A deep, hoarse voice spoke near his ear, gently calling out the word “Phoenix.”
Su Muluo looked up to meet dark golden eyes filled with bloodshot veins… and in the next moment, Long Ling deeply kissed his lips.
This was their first kiss after experiencing a life-and-death separation.
