Chapter 36 – "Huh?" Gu Lizhou’s mouth twisted in frustration.

Gu Lizhou replied to the message, then stood by the windowsill and stretched lazily.

Cao Zhiheng helped him bring in a few pieces of clothing and folded them, casually asking, “Did you tell the little brother that you’re leaving?”

“I did.”

“You did? You two are usually as inseparable as conjoined twins—why isn’t he seeing you off?”

Cao Zhiheng’s words made him dazed for a couple of seconds.

Close.

That word carried an inexplicable sense of intimacy, like hearing someone say when you were young that a certain teacher praised you in the office, inevitably giving you a slight fondness for that teacher.

Were the two of them considered close?

Probably.

Zhong Weishi seemed to call him for everything.

No one had ever treated him like that before. Even in the school dormitory, no one relied on him so much.

Now, suddenly having to return to the life of a lonely old man, he was a bit unaccustomed to it.

Gu Lizhou sighed, “He has to go to the set to film, it’s not like he doesn’t know the way—what’s the point of seeing me off?”

Zhong Weishi sent another sticker: two chubby little pandas hugging each other.

Gu Lizhou smiled. He didn’t usually chat much, and all the stickers he had saved were from his conversations with Zhong Weishi. After scrolling through for a while, he picked a sticker of a cat making a heart gesture and sent it.

These were the little stickers Zhong Weishi often sent when asking him to bring supper.

Who wouldn’t like a friend who was always full of enthusiasm and could bring laughter?

For the first time, Gu Lizhou found himself reluctant to leave.

At one o’clock in the afternoon.

The scorching sun hung overhead as Gu Lizhou sat in the taxi. The traffic radio station was broadcasting road conditions—an accident somewhere, roadwork somewhere else, and recommendations for drivers to take detours.

His ears were filled with noise, but his thoughts were entirely elsewhere.

Cheng Hang mentioned that he would be flying to over a dozen places for inspiration and wasn’t sure if he could make it back for the birthday. If he couldn’t return, he wondered if Zhong Weishi would be willing to go to City B…

To spend his birthday with him.

And maybe do a bit of touring…

While waiting in line to get his boarding pass, two young girls in front were chatting excitedly about a newly debuted star.

Feeling bored, Gu Lizhou opened his photo album on his phone.

He suddenly realized that he had quite a few short videos related to Zhong Weishi.

It made him feel like an old father recording his son’s growth moments.

The first clip was of Zhong Weishi doing a somersault and a handstand on the balcony. When zoomed in, one could see a medicinal patch on his spine, and every time he got close, there was a faint smell of medicine.

Next was the day of the square dancing, where Zhong Weishi pulled Da Fei to dance a yangko. There was also a photo of Zhong Weishi stuck on the railing and unable to get down, followed by him playing with the yo-yo…

And a photo from the day he got scratched by the cat.

He kept bumping into things every few days—Gu Lizhou wondered if his family would feel sorry seeing all this.

Would they?

Would parents who abandoned their child feel any remorse?

Or maybe, like Huangfu Qiang’s family, they had some kind of unavoidable hardship?

“So tragic, the ‘Xiao Ying’ crew must be cursed or something. I remember there was an accident during the first film too—the lead actor almost got burned to death.”

“Ah ya ya… That part that flew out, was it an arm ah…”

“Ugh—I’m not sure, maybe not. It could be some prop from the scene. But you see, that person hasn’t gotten up for a long time, even if they’re not dead, they’re probably crippled.”

“Good thing it was just a stunt double. If it were the lead actor getting disfigured, it’s over.”

“The stunt double is pitiful too ah! Hopefully, they’re okay.”

The moment he heard the word “stunt double,” Gu Lizhou’s heart clenched tightly. He turned his head to look at the screen on the girl’s phone.

It was a short Weibo video, and judging by the quality, it seemed to have been unintentionally filmed from a distance.

The girl’s fingertips swiped across the screen. Gu Lizhou, flustered and almost incoherent, stammered, “Excuse me, can I-can I take another look at that news, that short video? Who got hurt?”

“I don’t recognize ah.” The girl, seeing his face clearly, blushed and went back to the previous post. “Just a stunt double…”

Entertainment Fresh Report V: During the filming of “Xiao Ying II” at Yucheng Film & Television City, an accident occurred while shooting an explosion scene. The stunt double for lead actor Cheng Yue was blown out of the car, and the scene was horrifying…

The video was blurry, but it showed a figure in a uniform being blasted out of the car and collapsing on the ground, unmoving. A large crowd immediately rushed over, blocking the camera.

Gu Lizhou’s chest felt burning hot, his gaze shimmering with moisture.

“Do you still want to watch?” The girl turned her head, only to see the man staring at the screen in a daze, his eyes red.

It seemed… it seemed like he was about to cry.

Gu Lizhou’s breathing became rapid, and his mind raced to piece together several key phrases: “Do you know Cheng Yue?” “I’m his stunt double ah.” “Lots of explosion scenes.” “People can get blasted away…”

He couldn’t seem to catch his breath.

The temperature in the airport lobby was low, but cold sweat quickly covered his back. His trembling fingers repeatedly tapped the video on the screen, his mind blank.

In a daze, he seemed to hear the boy’s voice next to his ear: “Anyway, don’t forget about me, okay? I’ll always let you know wherever I go…”

He had just sent him a message that morning.

He had clearly said he would come to pick him up.

Zhong Weishi was only 22!

He hadn’t even started his life yet!

“Are you okay?” The girl noticed that he was trembling all over, tears streaming down his face. Worried, she patted his shoulder. “Are you feeling unwell? Ah?”

“Where is that film crew?” Gu Lizhou was so anxious he could hardly breathe. Only after asking did he realize that it was a useless question.

No one here would know.

No one in the comments knew how Zhong Weishi was doing—after all, he was just a little stunt double.

Apart from him, no one knew or cared.

Gu Lizhou’s hands trembled as he unlocked his phone, tapping the contacts list several times before finally hitting the right spot. His legs were so weak that he could only squat on the ground.

When he saw the words “Little Beast” on the screen, tears surged up uncontrollably. He wiped the tears off the screen and dialed the number.

He kept praying in his heart that nothing bad had happened.

“The number you have dialed is powered off…”

He slumped to the ground, the massive suitcase crashing heavily onto his thigh.

Dizziness hit him.

It felt as if all his cells had died in that instant.

It wasn’t the first time Gu Lizhou had experienced this feeling. The summer of his first year in high school, when the homeroom teacher informed him that his grandfather had passed away. It was the same…

Cold, panicked, helpless, and desperate.

Like someone had drained all his strength.

After storing his suitcase, he ignored all the gazes and sounds around him and sprinted madly in the opposite direction.

The sun outside the airport was scorching, the air suffocating hot. As soon as he stepped out, his T-shirt was soaked with sweat.

He hailed an airport taxi, but when the driver asked where he was heading, he was at a loss.

Where?

The Film & Television City was enormous—he didn’t know where the crew was.

He froze for a couple of seconds before suddenly looking up. “The hospital! The nearest hospital to Yucheng Film & Television City!”

The Film & Television City was nearly 150 kilometers away from the airport. Drivers rarely took trips there. After checking on his phone, the driver asked, “Is it the Fifth People’s Hospital?”

At this point, Gu Lizhou could only nod.

Once the car started moving, he began searching for hospitals near the Film & Television City. Besides the Fifth People’s Hospital, there were several others within a five-kilometer radius.

He sent several WeChat messages to Zhong Weishi, but there was no reply. Then, he opened Weibo, hoping to find updates about the incident.

He had been in such a hurry earlier that he hadn’t paid attention to when it happened—maybe about two hours ago?

What was the keyword again?

His heart had been pounding like a drum the whole time, as if it were about to explode.

The trending topics on Weibo were all about celebrities gaining weight, losing weight, laughing, or crying. Frustrated, he pounded his thigh hard.

How could something involving a human life not make the hot searches!

He scrolled through the real-time trending list for a long time but couldn’t find that post, so he searched for “Cheng Yue’s stunt double” and found the previous Weibo post.

The comments were mostly expressing sympathy for Zhong Weishi, though there were also a few discordant voices.

User 285724: If he dies, the crew will be in big trouble with compensation.

The replies were filled with people cursing.

Gu Lizhou rubbed his nose, exited Weibo, and opened Zhong Weishi’s Moments.

He wanted to see his smile again, to hear his voice.

There was still that half-used talent show coupon tucked into his phone case.

Would he ever get to use it?

It shouldn’t be the memento he leaves behind.

The driver noticed his odd mood, as if there were tear stains on his face. “Broke up with someone?”

Gu Lizhou couldn’t hear him at all, and a few pessimistic thoughts popped into his mind.

If Zhong Weishi was really gone, he’d find a good plot and give him a proper burial.

If he’d lost a limb, he’d take him back to B City, hire a caregiver to look after him.

If his face was ruined, he’d find a way to get it fixed and see if he could return to the entertainment industry. If not, he’d just support him—after all, he wasn’t short on money.

Once someone prepares themselves for the worst, their heart somehow feels a bit lighter.

Gu Lizhou suddenly thought of something and frantically called Cao Zhiheng.

“Are you sure he’s at the hospital? Which one?”

“If I knew, I wouldn’t need you. I’m heading to the Fifth People’s Hospital right now. You go check out the other nearby hospitals around the Film & Television City. I’ll call you when I get there.”

“Okay, okay, okay.” Cao Zhiheng hung up, tossed the spatula aside, turned off the gas, and rushed downstairs without even bothering to lock the door.

Holding onto a glimmer of hope, Gu Lizhou kept dialing Zhong Weishi’s phone number, but it was still powered off.

Did he drop it at the set? Why hadn’t anyone picked it up?

At least give him a bit of information ah.

Could it be that the phone was blown up too…

Cao Zhiheng ran through several emergency rooms at nearby hospitals but didn’t find Zhong Weishi. Gu Lizhou, drenched in sweat, also came out of the Fifth People’s Hospital.

“Anything on your side?”

“Nothing ah. I’ve checked all the emergency rooms at the nearby hospitals, but he’s not there. Maybe it’s not that serious, don’t worry too much.”

“How could it not be serious!”

Gu Lizhou recalled that video. That person had been blasted out of the car without any protection, couldn’t even get up, and his pant leg was still on fire.

“Hey, don’t yell at me ah. Didn’t you say it didn’t make the hot searches? It shouldn’t be too big of a deal. You know what they say, ‘scourge live long…’”

“You’re the scourge!” Gu Lizhou snapped, words slipping out without thought. “He’s only 22! Just a brat ah, a brat! What does he know? If the director tells him to do it, he’ll do it. With such a dangerous stunt, if the director pushes him, he’d just grit his teeth and go through with it ah! What else could he do?”

Cao Zhiheng, now feeling nervous too, stammered, “It can’t be that bad, right? The director wouldn’t really force him if he didn’t dare…”

“Why not? You don’t know him at all! He’s already been to the police station twice! When he got into heat of the moment, he just goes for it! Now it’s too late to regret it!” Gu Lizhou was so angry his liver hurt. “That damn director—just wants to make a name for himself and doesn’t treat the actors like people. Insists on realistic special effects—if something really happened, I’ll make sure he dies in a very realistic way! Let him prepare to be ruined!”

It was the first time Cao Zhiheng had ever heard Gu Lizhou so furious, and he was left dumbfounded, breaking out into a cold sweat himself.

“Old Gu, Old Gu, calm down first. Things might not be as bad as you think…”

“I can’t calm down right now!”

“Then stay agitated, but listen to my analysis first ah. Usually, with such a life-threatening incident, even if it’s someone from the 108th tier, it would have already made it to the hot searches ah. The official Weibo of the crew hasn’t posted anything, and neither have the marketing accounts…” As Cao Zhiheng was speaking, Gu Lizhou suddenly received a call.

Caller ID — Little Beast

Gu Lizhou’s eyes widened instantly, cutting off Cao Zhiheng’s analysis in a flash. He stammered, “Hello? Where are you? Is it really you?”

“Who else would it be if not me?”

The moment Gu Lizhou heard that familiar voice, his heart dropped back to where it belonged—at least he didn’t need to buy a burial plot anymore.

“Which hospital are you at? Why can’t I find you? Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?” He fired off a series of questions, then thought he should stabilize the little beast’s emotions and quickly added, “Don’t worry, I’m coming right over. No matter how big the issue is, I’ll handle it.”

Zhong Weishi frowned, “I’m at home ah. What hospital? You’re looking for me…” His voice suddenly cut off.

“Hello? Hello?” Gu Lizhou glanced at the screen and almost fainted from frustration.

The phone had run out of battery.

But being able to hear his voice was already good news.

What did that little beast just say?

At home?

Forty minutes later, almost everyone on the entire floor of Lanshan Apartments heard what sounded like the roar of a furious dragon.

“Zhong Weishi!—”

“Little beast! You’ve got some nerve! Why didn’t you pick up my calls!!! Ah??”

Zhong Weishi was completely dumbfounded, his eyes wide like copper bells. The first thing out of his mouth was, “Hey, didn’t you blast off to the skies?”

Clenching his fists, Gu Lizhou’s chest rose and fell with his heavy breathing.

After exchanging information, the two finally realized it was a massive misunderstanding.

Early in the morning, Zhong Weishi hurried to the set of “When I Met You in My Youth” to audition. There were over a hundred people auditioning along with him, and by the time it was his turn and he was done, it was already past noon. He grabbed a quick meal near the Film & Television City, and Qiangzi asked him to help move some things.

After finishing up, he was exhausted and overheated. He took a car back home and dozed off for a bit, leaving his phone charging on the bedside table.

His crappy phone not only took two hours to charge for five minutes of call time but also didn’t have an auto-reboot feature. When he woke up, he found over a dozen missed calls.

Still groggy, he called back… only to find that Gu Lizhou’s phone was now off.

He figured it might be because Gu Lizhou had to turn off his phone for the flight, so he didn’t think much of it.

It wasn’t until this man suddenly showed up at the door of apartment 301 that he was stunned, wondering if Gu Lizhou couldn’t bear to leave and decided to stay. Before he could feel happy, Gu Lizhou started yelling at him.

He really felt aggrieved.

Cao Zhiheng let out a sigh of relief. “Aiyo, I told you it wasn’t a big deal, but you wouldn’t listen to me. Look, isn’t he just fine? You’re always worrying over nothing.”

“What do you mean I worry over nothing ah? Then what was that video about? Who was the one flying out ah?” Gu Lizhou asked.

When Zhong Weishi saw the video, he didn’t know whether to cry or laugh. “That’s a dummy ah. How could they let a real person perform such a dangerous explosion scene?”

“Huh?” Gu Lizhou’s mouth twisted in frustration.

That scene had been filmed more than a week ago. The person who recorded it was standing far away, so the footage was blurry. The marketing account made up a story based on the unclear image, and the rumor eventually spread as an explosion accident.

Zhong Weishi pouted. “Who told you to just sleep all the time instead of watching me film? I’m a stunt double and a nude body double. You know, like doing over-the-shoulder throws and slamming people to the ground— not a special effects stuntman. The lead actor has several doubles; I’m not the only one.”

“Whoa! Over-the-shoulder throws? That’s pretty impressive!” Cao Zhiheng widened his eyes and patted Zhong Weishi’s arm. “Didn’t expect that from you.”

“Of course.”

Gu Lizhou caught on to a completely different point. “N-n-n-nude, body double?”

Was this even a proper drama? Why would it need a body double?

“Ah,” Zhong Weishi replied. “When Cheng Yue filmed his first drama, his back got burned, so he couldn’t do any scenes requiring nude scenes. Bathing and sleeping scenes all needed a double. My body shape and skin tone are pretty similar to his.”

Gu Lizhou scoffed, “What’s the point of filming a bath scene?”

Cao Zhiheng retorted, “What do you know? Some viewers are really into that. Just think about it—a fresh and vibrant body, with well-defined collarbones, toned muscles, smooth lines, fair and tender skin, water droplets rolling down. How enticing is that…”

Zhong Weishi interrupted him, “Why does it sound so weird when you put it that way? Are we talking about roast duck?”

“…”

They talked about the stunt double topic for a while, but eventually circled back to the main point of the day.

“Not answering my calls!!! Do you know I almost picked out a burial plot for you!? Ah?” Gu Lizhou furiously poked his forehead.

Cao Zhiheng thought to himself that Gu Lizhou must have gotten so anxious today that his brain short-circuited. That was way too harsh.

Zhong Weishi squinted as his head was pushed backward from the relentless poking. He leaned back and ended up falling onto the sofa.

Despite that, his heart felt inexplicably happy, so happy that the corners of his mouth lifted and his chest warmed up.

A little pink flower seemed to bloom above his head.

Chapter 76 – I have been tricked by Xiao Qiao again.

Chapter 76 – I have been tricked by Xiao Qiao again.

What is this feeling?! Could it be that Xiao Shiqing’s lips are poisonous?

Zhao Qi had been kissed by Rong Tang and also by He Changzhou, but he had never experienced a sensation like this before—like an electric shock, tingling and numb, with his skin burning where their lips touched, making his tears evaporate.

But Xiao Shiqing had only kissed the corner of his eye.

Zhao Qi had stopped crying, his eyes and lashes still wet, his face clearly showing “shock” in big letters. His thoughts were both easy and hard to guess; at least Xiao Shiqing couldn’t figure out why he suddenly quieted down.

“What’s wrong?”

Zhao Qi stared blankly, “This is your first time kissing me.”

Xiao Shiqing was also taken aback, “Didn’t you just say that I kissed you in front of others?”

“That doesn’t count; I don’t even remember it.”

Xiao Shiqing smiled, “Do you think that on the night of the palace banquet, I only slept with you and didn’t kiss you?”

“I don’t remember that either.”

“Then,” Xiao Shiqing’s hand gently supported the back of Zhao Qi’s head, “do you want me to help you remember?”

Now, it wasn’t just the corner of his eye; his whole face was burning.

Xiao Shiqing looked at him for a moment, then chuckled softly. Applying a bit more pressure with his hand, Zhao Qi’s face leaned in, and he met it halfway.

Just as their distance was only an inch away, Zhao Qi, as if waking from a dream, suddenly reached out to push against Xiao Shiqing’s chest.

“No, no.” Zhao Qi’s ears were red, and he said with a slight gasp.

Xiao Shiqing narrowed his eyes, feeling a strong urge to take control. But remembering Zhao Qi’s heartfelt words, he forcibly suppressed his desire and said in a deep voice, “Why?”

Zhao Qi held firm to his last boundary, “It’s not the matter of ‘cut sleeve.’ I’m already tired of saying it.”

Xiao Shiqing glanced at Zhao Qi’s slightly protruding belly, “Are you sure?”

“……” He was just uncertain, which is why his mind was a complete mess!

He was bending? Was he really bending?

Was it because he was carrying a dragon egg that he was bending, or was it because of Xiao Shiqing’s influence? If it was the latter, did it mean he liked…

Stop. No way. He had already successfully resisted the bending techniques of Rong Tang, He Changzhou, and Li Chisu, so there was no reason to fall for Xiao Shiqing! What was so good about Xiao Shiqing? Strong control issues, a heap of schemes, and apart from looking good and being smart, what else did he have?

That’s right, he couldn’t possibly like someone like that. Any strange reactions he had were just the result of pregnancy hormones. Once he gave birth to the little princess and his hormones returned to normal levels, he would definitely be a happy little straight man again.

Zhao Qi successfully brainwashed himself and declared resolutely, “Having a child and being straight are not mutually exclusive.”

Xiao Shiqing smiled lightly, his forehead resting against Zhao Qi’s, “Hmm, not conflicting. Has the Emperor decided to give birth to the princess on behalf of the subject?”

Zhao Qi looked down at his belly, “It’s not on your behalf; it’s for myself—I’ve always wanted a daughter.”

“Then has the Emperor thought of a name for the princess?”

Zhao Qi’s eyes lit up, “Oh, should I come up with one?”

Xiao Shiqing hesitated, vaguely feeling that something was off, but to make Zhao Qi happy, he didn’t think too much about it and smiled, “Since it’s your daughter, naturally, you should name her.”

Zhao Qi slipped out of Xiao Shiqing’s embrace and paced back and forth with his belly sticking out, “Then I must think of a name full of fairy-like charm, something that sounds like a little fairy.”

Seeing that Zhao Qi’s attention was completely focused on the name for their daughter, Xiao Shiqing felt somewhat relieved, “The Emperor is not angry anymore, right?”

Zhao Qi was reminded and said firmly, “I’m still not done being angry; you need to keep coaxing me.”

Xiao Shiqing smiled, “As you wish.”

Zhao Qi thought of something and asked, “What about He Changzhou…”

Xiao Shiqing’s smile faded slightly, “I can release him, but the Emperor must promise me one thing.”

“Just as expected of the Prime Minister, never missing an opportunity to negotiate terms with me,” Zhao Qi teased, “Go ahead.”

“Let Jiang Dehai and Xiao Jinzi return to serve you,” Xiao Shiqing said, “They didn’t intend to deceive you; they were just afraid of me. These two have followed you for a long time, served you diligently, and understand your wishes better than others.”

Zhao Qi always said Jiang Dehai and Xiao Jinzi were not his favorite eunuchs, but he still felt odd having others serve him. Since Xiao Shiqing brought it up, he agreed, “Deal.”

Jiang Dehai and Xiao Jinzi returned to Zhao Qi’s side. Jiang Dehai began reminiscing about the past years, recounting the decades of the old eunuch and the Emperor’s journey; Xiao Jinzi, on the other hand, clung to Zhao Qi’s leg and kept apologizing, finally tearfully asking, “Am I still your favorite little eunuch…”

What else could Zhao Qi do? Of course, he forgave them.

He Changzhou also came to see him and, upon seeing him, said, “Has the Emperor calmed down?”

Zhao Qi looked down while writing, “Not yet.”

“… Oh.” He Changzhou leaned over Zhao Qi’s shoulder, “What is the Emperor writing?”

“I’m thinking of a name for the little princess.”

He Changzhou glanced at it, “Zi Han, Zi Han, Zi Han… why are they all pronounced the same?”

“Because it’s popular; everyone names girls like that.”

“Is it?”

“Let’s not discuss this,” Zhao Qi wrote the character “Zi,” “Is there something you need from me?”

He Changzhou lazily leaned against the table, “Can’t I visit the Emperor without a reason?”

“Better not,” Zhao Qi said without hesitation, “Otherwise, the Prime Minister will get angry again.”

He Changzhou’s smile gradually disappeared, “Has the Emperor become unwilling to see me just for the Prime Minister’s sake?”

Zhao Qi scratched his head with the pen, unsure how to say it without making He Changzhou upset. “It’s not that I don’t want to see you, but you must promise not to act improperly towards me again.”

“The Prime Minister’s actions towards the Emperor were not just improper touches; why doesn’t the Emperor avoid him?” He Changzhou laughed briefly, “Is it because I am not worthy?”

Zhao Qi couldn’t come up with a rebuttal and thus tacitly agreed.

He Changzhou took a deep breath, leaning his hands on the table, looking intently at Zhao Qi, “Your Majesty, do you like the Prime Minister?”

Zhao Qi opened his mouth, “I, I don’t know…”

He Changzhou’s chest tightened at the ambiguous answer. “Don’t like him,” He Changzhou said, “Isn’t it better to like me?”

Zhao Qi shook his head, “No.”

He Changzhou’s eyes darkened, and his fists clenched tightly, “Why?”

Zhao Qi pointed to his heart, “I can’t control it.”

He Changzhou was taken aback, his eyes reddening slightly.

He Changzhou’s pained expression made Zhao Qi feel deeply guilty, but he still steeled himself and continued, “Sorry, Changzhou, but don’t waste your time on me. Not to mention others, even I feel it’s not worth it.”

He Changzhou used his hand to cover his eyes, but when he lowered it, he was smiling, “If I say it’s worth it, then it is. The Emperor’s opinion doesn’t matter.”

Zhao Qi’s heart, which had finally calmed down, was once again in turmoil. He didn’t even know how He Changzhou left.

He had also asked himself the question He Changzhou had posed.

Do I like him?

Heh.

Zhao Qi was trying to come up with a name for the dragon egg while also figuring out his feelings for the dragon egg’s other father. His head was spinning, and he still couldn’t come to a conclusion.

So, he asked Xiao Jinzi, “Jinzi, have you ever liked anyone?”

Xiao Jinzi was taken aback, then smiled, “How could I like anyone in my position, Your Majesty?”

Zhao Qi realized his mistake, “I misspoke.”

Xiao Jinzi was startled, “How could the Emperor misspeak in front of me? However, when I was young, before I entered the palace, I had a particular fondness for a maid in the neighborhood. I always watched her, saved any good food or fun things for her. Seeing her happy made me happy, and seeing her sad made me sad. I thought I would definitely marry her in the future, but unfortunately…”

Little Jinzi’s expression darkened, and Zhao Qi patted his shoulder in comfort. At that moment, Jiang Dehai approached with a brocade box, “Your Majesty, the item has arrived.”

Zhao Qi tensed up, as if facing a great enemy. “Put it down and leave.”

Jiang Dehai and Little Jinzi exchanged a glance. “Does Your Majesty not need us to stay and assist?”

“What can you help with?” Zhao Qi waved them off. “Hurry up and leave.”

“Your Majesty,” Jiang Dehai took out a porcelain vial from his sleeve. “This is a secret medicine from Physician Cheng. If you use it as directed, you won’t…”

Zhao Qi, blushing, interrupted, “Alright, alright, I understand.”

Since he had already decided to deliver the dragon egg, Zhao Qi had to follow the doctor’s instructions and expand the passage. This was a matter of life and death, so he couldn’t afford to be careless.

Zhao Qi opened the brocade box and looked at the crystal-clear jade inside. He twitched his mouth and lightly tapped his belly. “Dragon egg, Daddy has sacrificed so much for you. You must grow up to be beautiful.”

The dragon egg gave a kick under his belly, seemingly in response to Daddy.

Zhao Qi smiled warmly, picked up the jade and secret medicine, and climbed into bed. He lowered the bed curtains, removed his clothes, and hid under the quilt to carry out his secretive task.

He dabbed a bit of the secret medicine with his fingertips and shakily reached back.

It was cold. The secret medicine was cold, and his hand was cold too. The sensation was quite unpleasant. Zhao Qi pressed his lips together, his breathing becoming uneven as he broke out in sweat.

When it felt like the time was right, he picked up the jade and slowly inserted it.

Damn, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts!

Zhao Qi bit the quilt and pounded the bed, on the verge of tears. It wasn’t this painful when Xiao Shiqing helped him before… Stop, don’t think about that damn man right now, it’s not the time for that.

But just as Zhao Qi couldn’t control his heart, he also couldn’t control his thoughts. He thought about Xiao Shiqing, his fingers, the warmth of his lips, his handsome face, and the pain seemed to lessen a bit.

The jade was called Warm Jade, warm and close to body temperature, creating an illusion that what was inside him wasn’t jade, but…

—Integrity shattered everywhere.

Zhao Qi lay flat on the bed, dazed, quietly enjoying his moment of solitude.

Life is so meaningless. Why can’t he control his sinful hands?

He didn’t know how much time had passed when Jiang Dehai’s voice came from outside the door, “Your Majesty, the Prime Minister is here.”

Zhao Qi jolted, hurriedly tidying up the scene, shoving the tools into the quilt, dressing quickly, and taking several deep breaths. “Let him in.”

Xiao Shiqing entered the room, his nose twitching slightly. “Your Majesty—what’s that smell?”

Zhao Qi’s heart raced. He forced himself to stay calm. “Is there a smell? I don’t notice anything.”

Xiao Shiqing wasn’t alone; Mei Chuan followed behind him, kneeling and saluting Zhao Qi. “Commoner Mei Dai pays respects to Your Majesty.”

Zhao Qi was puzzled. “Why the sudden change in name?”

Xiao Shiqing explained, “He is a court physician brought from the East Japan to assist.”

Zhao Qi was amazed. “You and Mei Chuan look so alike, and even your attire is identical!”

Mei Dai said, “Your Majesty, I have a brother who looks exactly like me. We both studied medicine, but my brother is lazy by nature and only capable of treating common minor ailments. He usually assists me. Since we look alike, many people confuse us. It seems Young Master Zhao has hired the wrong person.”

Zhao Qi was stunned, staring blankly at Xiao Shiqing.

“Zhao Qiao’s bill will be settled another day,” Xiao Shiqing said. “Your Majesty, let Mei Dai examine your pulse first.”

Zhao Qi was infuriated. Xiao Qiao, you come back here! I’ll tear you to pieces, quarter you, and execute you by slicing! He quickly extended his wrist. “Will I be harmed…”

Mei Dai took Zhao Qi’s pulse and examined his belly. “Your Majesty need not worry; both you and the child are fine. My brother’s skills are not as good as mine, but he wouldn’t harm anyone.”

Both Zhao Qi and Xiao Shiqing sighed in relief.

Xiao Shiqing asked, “Will the fetus be too large?”

Mei Dai replied, “For the Prime Minister, this size is just right.”

“Then is it necessary to expand the birth canal?”

Zhao Qi protested in exasperation, “Prime Minister—”

Mei Dai said, “Birth canal? Men don’t have a birth canal. For men, childbirth is done by cesarean section.”

Xiao Shiqing: “…”

Zhao Qi: “…”

Chapter 75 – I talked to my brother for a chapter.

Chapter 75 – I talked to my brother for a chapter.

The eunuch relayed Xiao Shiqing’s words to Zhao Qi. Zhao Qi spat out the jujube pit in surprise, “Are you sure you didn’t mishear? Knowing the Prime Minister’s personality, he would normally coldly tell you to step aside and then barge in himself.”

The eunuch exclaimed, “The Emperor truly predicts accurately. Initially, the Prime Minister indeed intended that, but later, for some reason, he changed his mind and decided to wait outside until the Emperor was willing to see him.”

“… Xiao Shiqing actually did something unexpected and dropped his high-status image.” Zhao Qi paused for a moment, saying, “If the Prime Minister likes to wait, then let him wait.”

The eunuch agreed and withdrew, leaving Zhao Qi alone in the room, though his mood was far from calm.

Would Xiao Shiqing really wait outside? Could he possibly be free today? Unlikely. When was Xiao Prime Minister ever idle? Just a few days ago, despite his own medical condition, he expanded his domain. Yet now, there was no sign of him; just a heartless man who turned away when his duty called.

Fine then. Let’s see how long this heartless man can wait.

Zhao Qi climbed into bed with a heavy heart. Upon waking, the setting sun painted the sky in crimson, giving a surreal feeling of being in another world. Sitting on the bed, Zhao Qi pondered the meaning of life and summoned the eunuch, “How long have I been asleep?”

“Your Majesty, it’s been nearly two hours.”

Yawning, Zhao Qi asked, “Has the Prime Minister left?”

“Not yet, Your Majesty. He’s still waiting outside.”

Zhao Qi hesitated for a moment, feeling somewhat sorry—not for the heartless man but for the time wasted on him. Xiao Shiqing’s two hours could have been spent reviewing a stack of memorials, meeting officials, discussing important matters. Instead, it was being squandered on him. He was failing Da Jing and the common people.

Gritting his teeth, Zhao Qi slammed the table, startling the eunuch into bowing deeply before calmly saying, “Let him in.”

After Xiao Shiqing entered and respectfully saluted, Zhao Qi observed his lowered eyes and couldn’t help but sigh at his unwavering dignity. Even when bowing, Xiao Shiqing exuded a regal aura as if he were the one being honored.

In a lofty tone, Zhao Qi stated, “I heard the Prime Minister wishes to see me.”

“Not only that.”

“Oh?”

Xiao Shiqing continued, “He also wishes to see Your Majesty and the little princess.”

Without thinking, Zhao Qi placed his hand on his abdomen. “Both Your Majesty and the little princess have retired for the night. Brother… does the Prime Minister really need to waste time? Can’t he review some urgent memorials instead?”

Xiao Shiqing smiled, “Your Majesty, how do you know I haven’t already?”

Looking to the eunuch, who leaned in and whispered, “Your Majesty, the Prime Minister indeed reviewed urgent memorials while waiting and discussed return plans with several ministers.”

… Well, Xiao Shiqing truly lived up to his reputation.

Xiao Shiqing said, “I have something to discuss privately with Your Majesty.”

Zhao Qi didn’t immediately agree. With a third person present, even if it were just a young eunuch, he could maintain his imperial demeanor. But alone with Xiao Shiqing, his own mindset would inevitably change, no longer seeing himself as the Emperor.

Seeing Zhao Qi’s hesitation, Xiao Shiqing guessed his thoughts. “Since I promised Your Majesty, I won’t go back on my word,” he paused, adding, “unless I can’t resist.”

Rolling his eyes, Zhao Qi said, “Saying that is practically the same as not saying it. Forget it, you may leave.”

After the eunuch withdrew, Zhao Qi straightened his back. “Speak, Prime Minister.”

“Your Majesty, due to your health, I suggest that after returning to the capital, you reside temporarily in Xuchun Garden and only return to the palace after the princess is born.”

“How should I explain this to the Empress Mother?”

“Simply tell her the truth.”

“Absolutely not,” Zhao Qi said without hesitation. “The Empress Mother still intends to select a consort for me. Suddenly telling her she will be a grandmother would drive her mad.”

“What is Your Majesty’s suggestion, then?”

Zhao Qi had considered this matter. “Say that I am ill and need to recuperate in Xuchun Garden.”

Xiao Shiqing nodded, “Very well.”

Zhao Qi silently looked at Xiao Shiqing.

Xiao Shiqing corrected himself, “Your Majesty is wise.”

Continuing, Zhao Qi said, “After the princess is born, publicly announce that I had an affair with a palace maid who died in childbirth after giving birth to the princess, and then hand the princess over to the Empress Dowager for upbringing.” He felt strangely uneasy saying this, unwilling to meet Xiao Shiqing’s gaze.

Xiao Shiqing fell silent.

“This is the easiest solution,” Zhao Qi said firmly, for Xiao Shiqing’s benefit as well as his own.

Xiao Shiqing slowly smiled but his eyes held no warmth. “So, Your Majesty plans to invent a deceased woman to be the mother of the princess.”

“The Prime Minister’s words need not be so harsh.”

“Harsh?” Xiao Shiqing took a step forward. “Your Majesty, who do you think has said the harsher words?”

Familiar pressure caused Zhao Qi to instinctively retreat. “Don’t come closer.”

Xiao Shiqing didn’t advance further. He fixed his gaze on Zhao Qi, seemingly restraining himself. “Your Majesty,” his voice lowered, husky, “are you doing this on purpose?”

“What?”

“Intentionally making me uncomfortable,” Xiao Shiqing smiled wryly, “if that was your aim, you’ve found the right method.”

“I… I’m serious.” Zhao Qi squeezed his fingers nervously. “I can’t tell the Empress Mother or the little princess the truth. They couldn’t bear it.”

“And what about me?” Xiao Shiqing asked. “Have you considered whether I can bear it?”

Zhao Qi blurted out, “You’re Xiao Shiqing.”

As strong and imposing as Xiao Shiqing was, what couldn’t he bear?

Xiao Shiqing gave a cold laugh. “I am Xiao Shiqing, so I can accept anything, including facing my own flesh and blood without them knowing, and letting the princess accept a non-existent woman as her mother. I am Xiao Shiqing, I need no protection, and He Changzhou, Rong Tang, they are weak, so you protect them. Even if you choose me, you will never stand with me, do you? “

Zhao Qi frowned. They were discussing the princess’s matter. How did they suddenly bring it up to He Changzhou and Rong Tang.

“But you really don’t need my protection and bias.”

“I don’t need it, but I want it,” Xiao Shiqing said, “I’ve always wanted it.”

Zhao Qi still didn’t quite understand what Xiao Shiqing meant, but compared to the issue of favoritism, he was more concerned about the little princess. “So what do you want? To send the little princess to the Xiang residence and make her your own daughter?”

Xiao Shiqing met Zhao Qi’s gaze and said calmly, “The child is yours, so she can bear your surname and be raised in the palace. But I will tell her that her father is actually her mother. Her real father is me—whether she accepts it or not, that is the truth.”

Zhao Qi was enraged. “Are you going to defy the imperial decree again?”

Xiao Shiqing’s gaze darkened. “I can comply with other matters, but this…”

“Oh really? You comply with everything else?” Zhao Qi stood up. “Did you follow my order to release He Changzhou?”

Xiao Shiqing fell silent for a few moments, his eyes gradually showing displeasure. “Zhao Qi, what exactly are you making a fuss about?”

“Hah.” Zhao Qi sneered, his eyes turning red. “You can’t keep up the pretense anymore, can you?”

Xiao Shiqing was taken aback, then sighed lightly. He stepped forward, wrapped his arms around Zhao Qi’s waist, and sat down on the chair, pulling Zhao Qi onto his lap. “These past few days have been really tough. Let me take a moment to calm down before we continue this argument, okay?”

Zhao Qi froze instantly at the term “baby.”

Xiao Shiqing buried his head in Zhao Qi’s collarbone. Although Zhao Qi couldn’t see his expression, he felt like he was witnessing a rare moment of Xiao Shiqing’s vulnerability.

“You want me to treat you as the Emperor. Maybe I can’t be as respectful as an ordinary minister, but I’ve tried my best. He Changzhou embraced you and kissed you. I can hardly contain my anger and have already made the greatest concession by placing him under house arrest. As for the little princess, she’s our child. Not allowing me to recognize her, I truly… cannot do it.”

Zhao Qi was both furious and incredulous. Xiao Shiqing, the esteemed Prime Minister of Da Jing, who held immense power, was actually clinging to him in a pitiful manner? This character is breaking down—could he have been transmigrated as well?

“You’re talking nonsense.” Zhao Qi, surprised to find his voice hoarse, said, “I’m not your baby, and you don’t really like me.”

Xiao Shiqing was silent, his arms around Zhao Qi’s waist tightening slightly.

“I have evidence that proves you don’t like me.”

“Speak.”

“When I still liked Rong Tang, you advised me that as a monarch, it’s okay to have emotions occasionally, but I should stay clear-headed. Since you advised me like that, you must think the same way.”

Xiao Shiqing hesitated. “Yes, but at that time, I had not…”

Zhao Qi interrupted him. “So, even if you do like me, it’s a clear-headed kind of liking, the type where you can withdraw at any time. That’s the first point. Second, you’ve been marginalizing me, using me, ignoring my opinions, occasionally mocking me, and forcing me. How does this count as liking?!” Zhao Qi grew more agitated. “You kissed me in front of He Changzhou and the others just to show off and provoke him. Did you ever consider my feelings?!”

Xiao Shiqing was silent for a moment, then released his hold. “So you know.”

“If it hadn’t been for that incident, He Changzhou might not have forcefully kissed me.” Zhao Qi brought up every grievance, listing out Xiao Shiqing’s actions. “And that time in the village, I said no, but you insisted… You knew He Changzhou and Zhao Qiao were right next door…”

Xiao Shiqing was momentarily at a loss for words, unable to find an excuse for himself. He simply said, “At those times, I was very angry.”

Tears rolled down Zhao Qi’s face as he accused, “So it’s okay to treat me like this just because you’re angry? You bastard, how dare you still say you treat me as a treasure? Is this how you treat a treasure? And the treasure is even carrying your child, you bastard!”

Xiao Shiqing suddenly realized. “You’ve been sullen lately because of this matter?”

Zhao Qi’s eyes were filled with tears. “No! I’m lamenting how I’ve lived so stifled!”

Seeing Zhao Qi’s emotions on the verge of collapse, Xiao Shiqing felt a deep pang in his heart, his emotions churning. “Alright, stop crying. It’s my fault for not keeping you hidden and safe from others.”

Zhao Qi shook his head. “Now that you’re apologizing, you’ll still treat me the same way in the future.”

Xiao Shiqing embraced him again, kissing the wet corner of his eye. “No, I won’t do anything that makes you unhappy again.”

Zhao Qi felt a burning sensation where he was kissed, and his body trembled. He looked at Xiao Shiqing’s profound eyes, feeling a bit dazed.

“What’s wrong?” Xiao Shiqing asked. “There are no others here. Can’t I hold you or kiss you?”

Zhao Qi glanced down at his heart’s position and muttered, “Damn it.”

Chapter 35 – “Then you can stay with me ah.”

Zhong Weishi’s ear pressed directly against Gu Lizhou’s fingertip.

A man’s voice came through the phone.

“Alright, I’ll send someone to pick you up at the airport.”

“No need, no need. I booked an afternoon flight. By the time I get there, it’ll be evening. I’ll just take a taxi back and head to your company the next day.”

“Okay, then make sure to call me in advance. I’ll have a driver pick you up.”

“It’s fine, I can go by myself. It’s not like I don’t know the way…”

Zhong Weishi frowned and asked, “Where are you going ah?”

“Back to B City ah.”

Zhong Weishi stared into his eyes, feeling as if all the blood in his body had been drained in an instant.

He had expected that Gu Lizhou would leave the apartment sooner or later, but he hadn’t thought it would happen so suddenly.

“Isn’t your home in Qingfeng Garden?”

“No. Qingfeng Garden is my mom’s place. My parents are divorced. I live with my dad,” Gu Lizhou said.

“Ah.” Zhong Weishi was still dazed, barely able to find his voice.

“I moved to B City after middle school. I just came here for a break, but now I have to go back to work.”

Gu Lizhou’s tone was calm, devoid of any emotion, but it left Zhong Weishi with an inexplicable sense of sourness.

“Then why did you have me help you look for a job before ah…”

“My friend only reached out to me recently, after you helped me look for work,” Gu Lizhou said, meeting his gaze. “We’re developing a new game.”

“I see ah.”

Zhong Weishi recalled a conversation they had before about work. Gu Lizhou had mentioned that his job was related to online games.

So he was a programmer.

So awesome.

Gu Lizhou completely shattered the image of an IT guy that Zhong Weishi had in his mind.

The first thing Zhong Weishi did after snapping out of his thoughts was search for B City on the map.

Approximately 1,830 kilometers from Yucheng…

So far away…

He had only ever lived in two cities his entire life, never more than 50 kilometers apart. Now that the high-speed rail was in service, it only took about half an hour to travel between them.

But 1,800 kilometers was totally beyond his imagination.

A place completely out of his reach.

“Do you have to go back?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, Zhong Weishi realized how stupid the question was.

B City was the person’s home, so going back for work was the most natural thing in the world.

“It sounds really far,” he awkwardly changed the subject. “How long does the flight take ah?”

“It’s not too bad. A little over two hours.”

In truth, Gu Lizhou had considered turning down the job to focus on his own creative projects. But Cheng Hang had urged him multiple times, putting him in a tough spot.

Back when he was in investment, Cheng Hang had provided him with a lot of valuable connections, most of which were profitable. Now that the person needed his help, outright refusing would be pretty ungrateful.

Friendships were built on mutual exchange. Otherwise, people won’t bother to help you next time

Besides, Cheng Hang’s younger brother was in the entertainment industry… It was more or less a doorway.

Gu Lizhou wasn’t sure yet if he could do anything for Zhong Weishi, but if an opportunity arose, he would definitely give it a shot.

Before anything was certain, he didn’t dare make any promises—he didn’t want to disappoint his little friend.

Of course, the one next to him could not comprehend these little thoughts of his.

Zhong Weishi lowered his gaze, staring blankly at his shoes.

All the strength had been drained from his body, a heavy gloom settling around him. Behind him, it was as if a pale, sorrowful soul was floating up into the air.

A heavy rain had fallen at noon, and now, as the wind blew through the corridor, it carried a faint chill.

Ever since he had given Gu Lizhou that free performance ticket, they often sat in the hallway together, enjoying the breeze.

Gu Lizhou liked watching him play with flower trick and would even join in.

He also liked yo-yos, but his skills were so terrible that he often hit himself in the head when retracting the string and then blamed it on the yo-yo’s poor quality.

Gu Lizhou usually like to drink yogurt, but has recently switched to coffee; sometimes with milk foam, sometimes with a slight tang.

Today’s coffee was a light color and tasted very bitter.

The thought that no one would be sitting here watching him flip around anymore made Zhong Weishi’s eyes suddenly burn, his nose stinging with an ache.

Instead of blowing away his fatigue and irritation, today’s penetrating wind made him even more lost.

His mood plummeted from the heights of Mount Everest into a bottomless abyss.

He hated rainy days. And he hated goodbyes even more.

“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Gu Lizhou tilted his head to look at him.

Say what ah?

What was there left to say ah? You’re leaving anyway.

Frustrated, Zhong Weishi turned his face away and reached up to fiddle with a cactus on the windowsill.

“Why are you plucking its spines ah? Still don’t think it’s bald enough?” Gu Lizhou grabbed his wrist and tugged him back slightly.

Zhong Weishi let out a huff and kept plucking. “I want to pluck its spines. I’m going to strip it bare.”

“Alright, alright, alright.” Gu Lizhou sighed and let go. “Then pluck it.”

The moment the one on the side’s attention shifted away, Zhong Weishi’s expression turned resentful.

What ah…

Did he not notice his bad mood at all?

Could he really not tell that this was reluctance!

But then again, how could an old man like him understand something like reluctance? The person was only here to clear his mind anyway.

He came when he felt like it, and he left when he didn’t.

Who would care about him?

All that heartbeat nonsense—what a load of bullshit!

Was he really going to let his heartbeat revolve around just one person for the rest of his life?!

Gu Lizhou chuckled and nudged his elbow. “Still drinking your coffee?”

“No.” Zhong Weishi didn’t look at him. “That stuff tastes awful.”

Gu Lizhou picked up their earlier conversation. “When are you filming that super badass explosion scene? I’ll come watch.”

“I don’t know. It depends on the director. We have to wait for the weather to clear up first,” Zhong Weishi said.

“I see ah”

Something crossed Zhong Weishi’s mind. “Give me your bank account number. I’ll transfer you the rest of the money.”

“Just send it to my WeChat. There’s not much left anyway.”

“Oh.”

Another long silence.

Gu Lizhou wasn’t much of a conversationalist. Usually, it was Zhong Weishi who took the initiative to keep the conversation going. Now that this little parrot had shut his mouth, Gu Lizhou had nothing to say.

Zhong Weishi also found the atmosphere strange—even more awkward than when they first met.

After half a day, he shoved aside his uncomfortable feelings, summoning all his strength. “You’ll come back at some point, right? If you do, don’t just sneak in quietly—make sure to let me know ah.”

“Alright.” Gu Lizhou smiled. “But I’m afraid by the time I come back, you won’t be here anymore.”

“How is that possible! I’ll always be here!” Zhong Weishi straightened his back, eyes burning with determination.

Gu Lizhou chuckled. “Don’t you want to be a big star? Once you start getting roles and make a name for yourself, you won’t still be stuck in this broken place ah.”

Zhong Weishi’s head drooped again, like a wilted blade of dogtail grass.

Four years ago, when he had just moved to Yucheng, everything was unfamiliar. He had to learn how to cook and do laundry on his own, how to make his bed and dry his blankets in the sun, how to take the bus and squeeze into the subway, how to haggle with street vendors, and how to hold back tears…

With both confidence and uncertainty, he tried, little by little, to find his place in this world.

He wanted to shoot a movie, to work hard like the others in his group, to fight his way into the ranks of 18-line actors.

He wanted to earn money to support his grandmother’s old age. He wanted to make a name for himself, to make the people who abandoned him regret it, to live a life that was a little easier…

Back then, every single moment he had wanted to escape this place. But ever since Gu Lizhou arrived, that thought had never crossed his mind again.

Now, he looked forward to coming home every day, to sitting in the hallway under the moonlight with the old man, listening to him tell stories.

Fairy tales, romance, suspense, horror… every kind of genres.

It had become a habit—something as essential as eating and sleeping.

And a comforting habit like that wasn’t so easy to break…

Even if he went somewhere else and met new people, no one would be as understanding and helpful as Gu Lizhou.

To him, Gu Lizhou was like a steadfast evergreen pine—lush and enduring. Most days, he seemed warm and gentle, but when it truly mattered, he could shield others from the wind and rain with a quiet, unwavering strength.

“Just don’t forget me ah.” Zhong Weishi’s slipper swayed twice, knocking against the tip of Gu Lizhou’s shoe. “No matter where I go, I’ll let you know.”

At the moment of parting, all other emotions felt insignificant. The only thing that mattered now was making sure Gu Lizhou would remember him—remember that there was someone here in Yucheng who considered him a close friend.

En.” Gu Lizhou reached out and ruffled his hair.

Zhong Weishi thought about it and still felt it wasn’t enough. “If you ever go back to live in Qingfeng Garden, make sure to let me know too ah. It’s not far from here.”

“If I come back, I’ll probably just stay at Old Cao’s place. I’m not used to living with my mom—she nags too much.” Gu Lizhou paused before adding, “But next time, I might have to stay in a hotel. His girlfriend is moving in, so it’d be inconvenient for me.”

“Then you can stay with me ah,” Zhong Weishi blurted out.

As soon as he said it, Gu Lizhou seemed to freeze, as if someone had hit pause on him.

A suffocating wave of awkwardness crashed over Zhong Weishi.

What the hell was he saying!

Why was he so desperate for him to come back?!

This is way too weird!

It wasn’t until Gu Lizhou chuckled and replied with an “alright ah” did he finally breathed again, a crescent-shaped smile spreading across his face.

“There’s still an empty room here. I used to have a male roommate, but he moved out after the New Year.” Zhong Weishi said.

Gu Lizhou: “But when I first met you, you said you had a roommate.”

Zhong Weishi: “Well, we weren’t familiar with each other back then. I was afraid you would plot against me.

“Oh, please.” Gu Lizhou laughed so hard his gums almost showed. “With a phone balance in the negatives? Who would be interested in you ah?”

Zhong Weishi patted his shoulder. “I’ll treat you to a meal sometime as a send-off.”

“Good ah.” Gu Lizhou nodded.

Zhong Weishi had originally planned to take Gu Lizhou out for lunch on his birthday according to the solar calendar, then see him off at the airport for a proper farewell.

But things didn’t go as planned. That morning, he got a last-minute notice from a new production crew asking him to come in for an audition.

It was an opportunity he had waited for a long time.

A second male lead.

A role that would let him live from the start to the end.

He agonized over the decision for a long time, torn between sending Gu Lizhou off and attending the audition. His brain hurt from the stress. In the end, he cautiously sent a message to test the waters.

[Weishi]: I have to head to the set later, not sure when I’ll be back. What time are you leaving in the afternoon ah?

[Pretty Boy 0229]: It’s fine, just focus on your work. No need to see me off.

[Weishi]: I might be able to make it back in time.

[Pretty Boy 0229]: Really, don’t worry about it. I’ll start packing now.

What ya

Zhong Weishi sulked, gnawing at his thumbnail.

When he reached the line at the subway entrance, he sent another message.

[Weishi]: Be careful on your way back.

[Pretty Boy 0229]: En.

Zhong Weishi received the message and let out a heavy sigh at the subway entrance.

That single “en” felt perfunctory to him.

A pessimistic thought even crept into his mind—once Gu Lizhou left, would he also become just as insignificant as that “en” to him? Light and meaningless.

Like encountering a stray puppy during a walk—one might sigh and think, ‘how pitiful’ then pat its head and buy it some food. But in the end, reality would push that puppy out of sight and out of mind.

It was so unfair ah.

Because, in the puppy’s eyes, the only thing that mattered was the person who fed it.

But his pessimism didn’t last long. After sulking for five minutes, he finally typed out what he thought was an elegant, poetic, and deeply heartfelt message.

—If you ever come back, I’ll be there to pick you up! Not even thunder and lightning can stop me!

The original line was actually from Liang Shiqiu: I won’t see you off when you leave, but no matter the wind or rain, I will be there to welcome you back.

He felt it was the perfect fit for the situation.

He had to admire how romantic people from that era were.

And, of course, he believed that his slight modification made it even wilder.

Then, as he squeezed into the overcrowded subway car, a delayed sense of embarrassment washed over him.

Ah, ah, ah! No, no!

This is way too cheesy! Way too cheesy!

Panicked, he hurried to unlock his phone and retract the message—only to be jostled by someone nearby and accidentally hit “Delete” instead.

Dear heavens ah!—

It felt like all the air had been sucked out of the world.

A round, chubby little soul once again floated above his head.

For a long moment, there was nothing. Then—his phone vibrated.

Standing in the subway car filled with the overwhelming scent of chive and egg pancakes, he took several deep breaths, bracing himself for the inevitable teasing. Hands trembling, he picked up his phone.

[Pretty Boy 0229]: Alright ah, it’s a deal.

Zhong Weishi pressed his lips together and grinned foolishly at the screen, his forehead lightly knocking against the subway handrail again and again.

All his gloomy little emotions instantly vanished into thin air.

Ah.

He suddenly had the overwhelming urge to do a backflip.

Chapter 74 – I have banished my brother, the Prime Minister, to the cold palace.

Chapter 74 – I have banished my brother, the Prime Minister, to the cold palace.

Xiao Shiqing’s words could be said to hit the nail on the head.

In other matters, Zhao Qi always trusted him deeply, and he believed that every decision Xiao Shiqing made was beneficial to the country’s overall situation. But when Xiao Shiqing said he liked him very much… to this, he could only respond with a simple “oh.”

Zhao Qi believed in He Changzhou’s liking for him, believed in Rong Tang’s obsession with him, and even believed in Li Chisu’s interest in him, but he did not believe in Xiao Shiqing.

Perhaps Xiao Shiqing did have a bit of liking for him, this kind of liking was probably like the liking a master has for a pet, providing good food and drink, teasing when bored, patting… no, Xiao Shiqing hadn’t really kissed him yet.

Zhao Qi said indifferently, “I believe, I believe you. Are you satisfied? Can I go to bed now?”

Xiao Shiqing unexpectedly grabbed Zhao Qi’s wrist, “Don’t lie to me—tell me why you don’t believe me.”

“Do you really want to hear?” Zhao Qi asked coldly.

“Mm.”

Zhao Qi said coldly,

Zhao Qi also felt inexplicably gloomy. Many small things that he used to overlook were gradually magnified these past few days, making him, who had been content, feel disillusioned with the world. He had considered that it might be the hormones during pregnancy affecting him, but it definitely had something to do with the dog of a man in front of him.

He pondered Xiao Shiqing’s question. If Xiao Shiqing respected him as he would an Emperor, would he be happy?

Imagine this: Xiao Shiqing is extremely deferential, bowing and kneeling in utmost reverence, trembling with fear—”Oh my, can’t he be less thrilled about this!”

Zhao Qi maintains his composure and says, “You can try.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that.”

Zhao Qi: “…” Why did you bother asking then?

“Since I desire you, regardless of whether you become an emperor, I will do things for you that ministers cannot do for their monarch.” Xiao Shiqing’s gaze lingers briefly on Zhao Qi’s lips. “But if this can ease your worries, I will try.”

“At least it will make me happier than now.”

Xiao Shiqing smiles wryly, “Then what does Your Majesty wish me to do, just command me.”

The situation came too suddenly, Zhao Qi can’t believe it’s true. “Can you really order anything?”

“If the sovereign desires my life, I must give it.” Xiao Shiqing chuckles softly, “I have already given my life to Your Majesty.”

Xiao Shiqing is typically indifferent and unfeeling, but with this smile, his charm rivals that of Li Chisu who has roamed the flower fields for years.

It’s not that men are too arrogant, it’s that it’s scary when an arrogant man is handsome and knows how to flirt.

If Zhao Qi wasn’t barely a straight guy, he might have been fooled.

“Why would I want your life, I can’t eat it.” Zhao Qi didn’t give Xiao Shiqing any face, “You may leave, I want to sleep.”

“Does Your Majesty really not need me to attend to your rest?”

“Look at you,” Zhao Qi said disappointedly, “which minister speaks to an emperor like this? On the first day of challenging my imperial authority, you have already failed.”

Xiao Shiqing felt a pang in his chest as he glanced at Zhao Qi’s belly, then bowed and said, “I take my leave.”

Jiang Dehai waits outside and is surprised to see Xiao Shiqing coming out. “Prime Minister, where are you going? Aren’t you staying to accompany His Majesty?”

Xiao Shiqing self-mockingly replied, “His Majesty doesn’t want me anymore.”

Jiang Dehai thought his eyes were playing tricks on him. Did these words, commonly spoken by this resentful person, really come from the mouth of the Prime Minister?

Xiao Shiqing looked back at the tightly closed door and said, “I will stay at the mansion tonight. If there’s any change with His Majesty, inform me immediately.”

Jiang Dehai agreed, “Yes.”

Early the next morning, everything was ready for their return to the capital, and Xiao Shiqing personally came to invite Zhao Qi.

When he arrived, Zhao Qi was still asleep. Jiang Dehai and Xiao Jinzi knelt by the bed, coaxing him softly to wake up.

“Your Majesty, we are ready to return to the capital. The carriages are prepared, and everyone is waiting for Your Majesty.”

With his eyes closed, Zhao Qi murmured something and turned over to sleep again.

Xiao Shiqing signaled with his eyes. Jiang Dehai and Xiao Jinzi tactfully withdrew, making space at the bedside.

“Your Majesty.”

Hearing his voice, Zhao Qi’s ears twitched, and his belly also moved. He had fallen asleep late last night, and although he wasn’t fully awake, the dragon egg in his belly was already awake, kicking and restless, not letting this future dad continue sleeping.

Zhao Qi opened his eyes and saw Xiao Shiqing’s face. He sleepily called out, “Brother?”

Xiao Shiqing’s heart almost melted at being called that. “If you don’t want to get up, shall I carry you to the carriage to sleep?”

The haziness in Zhao Qi’s eyes gradually faded, and his mind cleared. He stopped calling “brother” as if he had changed into someone else. “Why is the Prime Minister here? Did I summon the Prime Minister?”

“…No.”

Xiao Shiqing’s resigned demeanor made Zhao Qi unable to resist pushing further, “I didn’t summon you, and you didn’t seek an audience with me. You’re standing by my bedside so openly, is this how the relationship between ruler and subject should be?”

“…It’s not.”

Jiang Dehai and Xiao Jinzi watched in astonishment, wearing expressions as if they had seen a ghost.

Zhao Qi turned his attention to them. “And you two, how do you serve? You let anyone in so casually? Get out… no, leave.”

Jiang and Xiao exchanged looks, seeking help from Xiao Shiqing, but their Prime Minister was struggling himself.

“Your Majesty, you need someone to help you with grooming and dressing.” Xiao Shiqing coaxed him, “I’ll leave, let them stay.”

“I don’t.” Zhao Qi instinctively touched his belly, a habit he had developed recently. “Get someone else to serve me. I don’t need a eunuch who only listens to the Prime Minister’s commands.”

Xiao Shiqing squinted.

“Your Majesty!” Jiang Dehai and Xiao Jinzi knelt down, tears streaming, “We are loyal to Your Majesty, absolutely loyal!”

Zhao Qi commanded imperiously, “You’ve hidden something from me, and I know it. From now on, you two are no longer my favorite eunuchs.”

“Please, Your Majesty!”

“Your Majesty can take our lives, but please don’t dislike us!”

The two sobbed as if mourning their parents, which made Zhao Qi feel a little guilty.

No! He couldn’t be soft-hearted again! Finally, with such an opportunity, he wanted everyone to know: he, Zhao Qi, was fierce and not to be trifled with!

“I order you both to leave immediately. Are you defying my order?!”

“Your Majesty, please calm down.” Xiao Shiqing walked out first, and Jiang Dehai and Xiao Jinzi wiped their tears as they followed.

“Prime Minister, may I ask, did you really appease His Majesty yesterday?” Jiang Dehai lamented, “His Majesty seems even more severe today.”

“He’s venting his frustrations, it’s better than bottling them up.” Xiao Shiqing rubbed his brow; he wasn’t used to being treated like this by the young emperor. In the past, he would have had to discipline the young emperor properly, but now, for the sake of soothing this treasure… this darling, he had to suppress his nature.

“Gonggong,” Xiao Jinzi choked up, “His Majesty said we hid something from the Prime Minister. What could it be?”

Xiao Shiqing found this matter suspicious as well, but before he could think more, he said, “Find two reliable attendants for His Majesty.”

As the three stood “punishingly” at the door, Zhao Qiao happened to come to see Zhao Qi. He saw Xiao Shiqing and asked, “Oh, Prime Minister, what are you doing here?”

“Awaiting your chariot.”

Zhao Qi chuckled, “When did the Prime Minister learn to wait upon a chariot? Seeing the Emperor isn’t something one can do just because they wish.”

Xiao Shiqing casually glanced at Zhao Qi, who immediately turned serious, “Prime Minister, take your time. This humble official will go see the Emperor first.”

Seeing that Zhao Qi had nothing else to discuss but was here to bid farewell, he couldn’t help but remark on how much Zhao Qi had gained weight, looking at his belly, resembling someone four or five months pregnant.

“You may leave,” Zhao Qi said.

Zhao Qi choked back tears, “Brother, who knows when I’ll see the Emperor again. I’ll leave Dr. Meichuan with the Emperor, so whenever he sees him, he’ll think of me.”

Zhao Qi could tell Zhao Qi was reluctant to leave, so he reluctantly encouraged him, “Return honestly to Dongzhou. Don’t wander around outside.”

“I’m afraid I won’t be able to return to Dongzhou so soon,” Zhao Qi lamented.

“Then where will you go?”

“I must make a trip to Dongying. Otherwise, the Empress Dowager of Dongying will send someone to capture me and lock me up in the Dongying Palace.”

Thinking of his cousin’s unusual relationship with the Empress Dowager of Dongying, Zhao Qi sighed, “Is it fun to have an affair with a widow?”

“Not bad,” Zhao Qi smirked.

Zhao Qi rubbed his forehead and waved, “Goodbye.”

Upon seeing Xiao Shiqing still waiting outside when he exited, Zhao Qi couldn’t help but mock, “Oh, still waiting? Prime Minister Xiao is indeed something. Even waiting looks like kneeling by the bed. Hahaha…”

Zhao Qi teased and quickly ran off, not giving Xiao Shiqing a chance to retaliate.

Xiao Shiqing watched his figure disappear and pondered, asking Jiang Dehai, “Am I kneeling by the bed?”

Jiang Dehai quietly replied, “Forgive my blunt words, but judging by the Emperor’s demeanor, it’s not about making you kneel by the bed, but about banishing you to a cold palace!”

Before Xiao Shiqing could digest being banished to a cold palace, the door opened, and Zhao Qi, now dressed, walked out without even looking at Xiao Shiqing, saying, “It’s time to depart.”

Zhao Qi traveled by carriage to Jiangxia Ferry, then transferred to a dragon boat, retracing his route south along the waterway.

Several consecutive sunny days made the Huai River calm. Zhao Qi looked at his round belly and worried. For now, he could still use gaining weight as an excuse, but in a month or two, that excuse would no longer hold. After returning to the palace, how would he attend court, manage state affairs, and explain to Empress Wen?

After lunch, Meichuan and Cheng Boyan came as usual to check his pulse. Before entering, Cheng Boyan was intercepted by Jiang Dehai and Xiaojinzi, who earnestly asked him to speak well of Zhao Qi in front of the Emperor.

Cheng Boyan asked, “The Emperor doesn’t look well. Did he not rest well last night?”

Zhao Qi lazily replied, “Hmm.”

“Your Majesty, pregnancy is not ordinary. Your Majesty should rest quietly and avoid excessive worry.”

Zhao Qi smiled, “That’s why I’ve driven away everyone who worries me.”

Cheng Boyan’s attempt to speak well was blocked.

Meichuan asked, “Has Your Majesty used the warm jade these days?”

Zhao Qi was exasperated, “Can you not mention that?”

Meichuan said seriously, “Since Your Majesty is determined to bear a princess, please take this matter seriously. Otherwise, there’s a risk of difficult labor in the future, endangering both Your Majesty and the princess.”

Meichuan’s words made Zhao Qi uneasy. He feared pain and death. If he had to expand the birth canal to ensure the safety of father and daughter, then he…

“I understand,” Zhao Qi covered his face, “I need to think carefully about this. You may leave.”

Cheng Boyan hesitated for a moment, “It’s easy for one to be restless. Your Majesty, it’s better to have Jiang Gonggong and the others accompany you.”

With no one around, it was indeed quiet. Zhao Qi suddenly thought of someone and asked, “I haven’t seen He Changzhou for a long time—did he board the ship?”

Cheng Boyan replied, “As far as I know, General He Changzhou has been restricted by the Prime Minister and cannot meet the Emperor.”

Zhao Qi vaguely remembered this incident and said, “Go and convey my order to lift He Changzhou’s restriction.”

“But… will the Prime Minister agree?”

“I don’t care if he agrees or not. Just go and convey my order.”

Cheng Boyan conveyed Zhao Qi’s decree to Fu Zi, who then turned to Xiao Shiqing for instructions, “Prime Minister, should General He Changzhou’s restriction be lifted?”

Xiao Shiqing’s face was cold. He could comply with Zhao Qi on other matters, but he couldn’t tolerate another man coveting the young Emperor. What’s this? He had just entered the cold palace, and someone was already eager to get out? How audacious.

“Do not lift it.”

“But regarding the Emperor…”

Xiao Shiqing said, “I will speak with the Emperor myself.”

Xiao Shiqing did not barge into Zhao Qi’s bedchamber but had an attendant announce his presence first.

The attendant nervously reported back, “Prime… Prime Minister, the Emperor says he wants to nap and sees no one. He also said, if you came about General He Changzhou, it’s unnecessary for the Prime Minister to visit.”

This was the first time Xiao Shiqing had been shut out in his life. He fell silent for a moment, then suddenly smiled, “Step aside.”

The attendant didn’t dare to make a sound and quickly moved aside.

Xiao Shiqing remained motionless.

The attendant misunderstood and hurried to open the door for him.

“No need,” Xiao Shiqing admitted defeat, “Tell him I’ll wait here until he wakes up.”

Chapter 35

Qian Xiaoke didn’t know how he had upset Jiang Tongyan again. However, since the other party told him to shut up, shutting up was the best choice. After all, listen to advice and you’ll eat your fill1It implies that taking good advice from others will benefit you.

The two stood in the elevator. Qian Xiaoke did not say anything more, focusing instead on observing the elevator in his new home.

He had to admit. The new place… Even the elevator outside looked high-class!

Tears welled up again. Qian Xiaoke bit his sleeve and felt like he was truly a lucky little boy.

Jiang Tongyan sulked beside him, inwardly grumbling that Qian Xiaoke had no taste.

What was so great about a poor kid?

So many people wanted to marry into wealth and never got the chance!

He had figured it out—Qian Xiaoke’s brain wasn’t just off; it wasn’t merely a missing screw anymore!

Leaving the complex, Qian Xiaoke asked considerately, “Chairman Jiang, want to go to the company with me?”

It seemed like an invitation to travel together, but in fact, he was thinking if Jiang Tongyan was heading to their company too, he could hitch a ride again.

Qian Xiaoke had plenty of little tricks up his sleeve!

In the end, he was coldly rejected.

Jiang Tongyan hadn’t planned to go in the first place, and now, wearing wrinkled clothes with nothing under his pants, he definitely couldn’t. Plus, Qian Xiaoke had just pissed him off—angry people don’t work!

So they parted ways at the neighbourhood’s gate. Qian Xiaoke said, “See you tonight then.”

Jiang Tongyan, still unhappy, didn’t respond and walked off.

Watching Jiang Tongyan’s retreating back, Qian Xiaoke worriedly thought: Tonight’s treatment—I wonder if it’ll work!

       Doctor Qian was really dedicated!

       ===========

Qian Xiaoke went to work, while Jiang Tongyan returned to his hotel. He took another shower, changed clothes, and called Cheng Sen to get busy with work.

He was flying back to New York tomorrow, and the project here would be finished today.

In the end, there wasn’t much important left to do—most things had been handled. Cheng Sen visited him at the hotel and casually suggested celebrating tonight, but Jiang Tongyan made up an excuse about rescheduling.

Though Jiang Tongyan didn’t say it, Cheng Sen guessed what he was up to.

       A date, obviously—with Qian Xiaoke.

Valuing romance over friendship—that was Jiang Tongyan for you.

Cheng Sen asked him, “How’s it going?”

“I’ll handle the paperwork when I get back, but I won’t be here until year-end.”

“Who’s asking about that?” Cheng Sen said with a gossipy look on his face. “You and Qian Xiaoke—things going alright?”

He smiled and said, “You’re leaving—didn’t he cry and beg you to stay?”

Hearing Qian Xiaoke’s name, Jiang Tongyan instantly turned red from his ears to his neck. “Qian Xiaoke? Who’s that? Progress with what? Why would he cry?”

Cheng Sen laughed heartily. He waved his hand dismissively and left. “No idea who that is—just some unimportant extra, I suppose.”

       An unimportant extra?

Better not let Qian Xiaoke hear that.

But after Cheng Sen left, as Jiang Tongyan packed his bags, he did feel some reluctance.

Would Qian Xiaoke be reluctant to be apart from him?

If he knew he was leaving, would he have broken down and cried?

If he did cry, what then?

He got serious stuff to handle back there—no matter what, he had to go!

Did Qian Xiaoke even have a passport?

       Getting him a visa now… he’s so poor—could he even get a U.S. visa?

Jiang Tongyan packed while his mind ran wild. Meanwhile, Qian Xiaoke was at work, full of energy, sneaking off to the bathroom to study on his phone.

       Studying how to treat impotence.

So diligent, it could move heaven and earth.

Near the end of the workday, Qian Xiaoke started thinking about what to eat tonight. Since he and Jiang Tongyan had agreed to meet earlier at his place for the treatment, why not cook at home?

No instant noodles this time—maybe wontons.

He was mulling it over when Cheng Sen stepped out of the elevator.

“Hello, Chairman Cheng!” Qian Xiaoke flashed his pretty eight-tooth smile.

Cheng Sen glanced at him and casually asked, “Any plans tonight?”

       “Huh? Overtime?”

“Nah, just asking.” Cheng Sen sauntered back to his office and left him with, “Leave quickly after work—don’t linger around here.”

Qian Xiaoke didn’t get it. Confused, he sat down, pondering his boss’s words.

Could it be that… he was going to fire me?

Qian Xiaoke succeeded in scaring himself to death again.

After the work ended at six o’clock, Qian Xiaoke didn’t dawdle this time—he left right on time. He had to follow the boss’s orders, after all.

As soon as he stepped out of the office building, he saw Jiang Tongyan standing there with a bag of fruit, waiting for who-knows-who.

       Pretty handsome.

“Chairman Jiang!” Qian Xiaoke greeted him politely.

Jiang Tongyan turned at his voice and glanced at him. “Rushing out the second work ends—if I were your boss, I would be mad at you.”

       Qian Xiaoke pouted, ignoring him.

Jiang Tongyan wanted to say more but hesitated, switching to, “Let’s go—what’s for dinner?”

       “Huh?”

“Didn’t you say earlier today?” Jiang Tongyan said. “I came specially for you—don’t tell me you’re bailing on me!”

“You were waiting for me?” Qian Xiaoke was surprised. “I thought you were here for Chairman Cheng.”

“The project’s done—why would I need him?” Jiang Tongyan shoved the bag of fruit into Qian Xiaoke’s hand. “Too heavy—you carry it.”

It wasn’t until they were in the taxi that Qian Xiaoke realised Jiang Tongyan had said, “You carry it.”

       You.

“Chairman Jiang, you bought this for me?”

The bag had some apples, a few bunches of gr4p3s, and a couple of gorgeous pomegranates.

       “For a pig.”

Qian Xiaoke burst out with a ‘pfft’ laugh.

“Chairman Jiang, I can’t accept gifts without merit.”

Jiang Tongyan sat in the front passenger seat and was too shy to look back. However, his ears were red like they’d been soaked in chili oil.

“I said it’s for a pig—you’re owning up to it?”

“You’ve called me a pig before,” Qian Xiaoke said, holding back laughter as best he could.

He realised Jiang Tongyan was actually pretty fun—the classic type who says one thing but means another, giving gifts but too embarrassed to admit it. On closer thought, it was kinda cute.

Qian Xiaoke sat in the back, hugging the big bag of fruit, and heard Jiang Tongyan ask, “So, uh, when I call you a pig, you don’t get mad?”

“Nope, I’m not angry,” Qian Xiaoke said. “Pigs are pretty cute too.”

What kind of logic was that?

       Jiang Tongyan was stunned.

But then he thought, fair enough—nothing Qian Xiaoke said was surprising anymore.

“So it’s really for me?” Qian Xiaoke poked at the pomegranates, practically drooling. “But I…”

“Don’t give me that ‘no merit, no reward’ line,” Jiang Tongyan said. “It’s for you; take it. If you don’t want it, toss it when we get out.”

The driver, who’d been eavesdropping and snickering, couldn’t hold back anymore.  “Don’t toss it!”

He looked at Qian Xiaoke in the rearview mirror. “Hey, kid, if you don’t want it, leave it in the car—I’ll take it home for my son tonight.”

Jiang Tongyan shot a glare—not at the driver, but at Qian Xiaoke, the subtext being: Dare to toss it, and I’ll toss you out first!

Qian Xiaoke obviously couldn’t throw it—nowhere was an option.

Hugging the fruit, he grinned at the driver. “No way! Chairman Jiang bought this for me—it’s precious!”

That one line cheered Jiang Tongyan right up, his mood soaring. He was so easy to please!

They went straight to Qian Xiaoke’s place, stopping at the supermarket downstairs to grab a bag of frozen wontons.

“Is this okay?” Qian Xiaoke said. “I feel like eating it.”

“If you want it, eat it,” Jiang Tongyan said. “If you like it, buy a few more packs.”

Qian Xiaoke laughed. “Almost twenty yuan a pack! Why buy so many?”

Jiang Tongyan followed him home, muttering, “Don’t be so stingy. Eat what you want—don’t be too hard on yourself.”

Once inside, Qian Xiaoke told Jiang Tongyan to rest while he changed and ran into the kitchen.

Jiang Tongyan followed anyway, watching Qian Xiaoke boil water for the wontons, suddenly feeling a bit sentimental.

       “Qian Xiaoke.”

“Hm?” Qian Xiaoke, in his Pikachu T-shirt, turned to look at Jiang Tongyan.

“Um… if I left, would you miss me?”

       “Leave? Where are you going?”

“Back to New York,” Jiang Tongyan said. “Once the project here’s done, I’m heading back.”

Qian Xiaoke puffed out his cheeks, looking like a little squirrel.

He thought for a moment and said, “I would really think about you a lot.”

Jiang Tongyan almost smiled, but then Qian Xiaoke added, “If you leave and I haven’t fixed your problem, wouldn’t that hold you back?”

“…That’s the only reason you’d think about me?” Jiang Tongyan frowned.

Qian Xiaoke carefully poured the wontons into the boiling water, suddenly feeling a bit melancholic.

       “Chairman Jiang, I’m really sorry.”

It was rare for Qian Xiaoke to apologise so seriously, his tone so downcast that it pinched Jiang Tongyan’s heart.

       “Why the sudden apology?”

“I just feel like it’s all my fault,” Qian Xiaoke said, head down, gently stirring the wontons. “I was the one who made the mistake in the beginning.”

His sudden seriousness threw Jiang Tongyan off balance.

Qian Xiaoke had always wanted to apologise to Jiang Tongyan properly but never knew how to say it.

He had no brain, was dumb, and couldn’t handle anything well.

Qian Xiaoke pursed his lips. “Chairman Jiang, I know I made a huge mistake, turning you into this. Sometimes I wake up from nightmares about it.”

Jiang Tongyan sighed, thinking: You’re not the only one.

“I’ve thought about how this must affect your future relationships.”

Jiang Tongyan wanted to roll his eyes.

Qian Xiaoke sighed. “I’ve considered that if you don’t mind, I’d be willing to be with you—I don’t care if you can’t get it up.”

That line left Jiang Tongyan unsure whether to laugh or cry.

Jiang Tongyan wanted to say he didn’t mind and that he’d definitely get it up eventually!

But before he could, Qian Xiaoke muttered to himself, “But then I think, nah, how could you not mind? Who am I? Ugly, poor, uneducated—how could I ever climb up to someone like you?”

       “Huh?”

“Ugh, if this were a BL novel, I’d be the cannon fodder bottom who never gets love,” Qian Xiaoke said woefully. “Not to mention this is real life—turning into a phoenix from a branch2climbing social status like how Cinderella did? That kind of thing doesn’t exist. I’d better not dream.”

He turned and held Jiang Tongyan’s hand.

“Chairman Jiang, I promise I’ll do everything I can to help you regain your confidence as a man before you leave. You’ll go back to New York and shine. Don’t worry—I won’t hold you back!”

Jiang Tongyan’s hand was squeezed hard, and for a moment, he couldn’t tell if this guy was joking or serious. He really wanted to crack open Qian Xiaoke’s head to see what kind of wiring let him stage an entire drama by himself.

“Qian Xiaoke.” Though Jiang Tongyan had been mentally roasting him, he somehow got swept into the act too, frowning dramatically as he said, “It’s too late—because tomorrow I’m heading back to New York.”

Chapter 73 – I am suffering from prenatal depression.

Chapter 73 – I am suffering from prenatal depression.

    He Changzhou’s heart throbbed painfully.

In his eyes, and in the eyes of most people, their emperor rarely truly became angry. Even when he was angry, he wouldn’t vent on his attendants like many other high-ranking officials. He would find the culprit, solemnly tell them, “I am angry with you. What did you do to make me angry? Explain it clearly.”

He Changzhou, through a series of coincidences, had made him angry several times, inflating him like an inflated pufferfish. Yet, he would still talk to him, come to the palace gate in the middle of the night before he left, give him a farewell hug, suppress his anger upon his return, give him the bed to rest, and even help him bake something to eat.

If Zhao Qi were to tell him angrily right now, he would definitely stick to him like before, coaxing him, saying, “Your Majesty, don’t be angry. I’ll take you to eat delicious food.”

But he didn’t sulk, there was no light in his eyes, he forced a smile and told him, “I am indeed a little angry.”

He suddenly lost his words, unable to offer any words of comfort. He stood up, wanting to lend Zhao Qi his shoulder, but Zhao Qi dodged backwards, feeling extremely weary, “Don’t take advantage of me at this time.”

  He denied vehemently, “I didn’t.”

Zhao Qi smiled faintly, “Actually, I know that I don’t act like an emperor. You all aren’t afraid of me. The officials respect me on the surface, but in their hearts, they just see me as an ornament. It doesn’t matter,” he shrugged, “I’m not cut out to be an emperor anyway. As long as you maintain peace and stability, I’m fine being a lazy fish who eats and sleeps. But…” Zhao Qi paused, his eyes slightly red, “at least you should show me some basic respect, right? You can’t just hug me whenever you want, kiss me whenever you want, or…” want to sleep with me whenever you want.

He swallowed hard, “Your Majesty, don’t say that. I didn’t kiss you on impulse. I thought about it for a long time before I did.”

Normally, Zhao Qi would probably sarcastically say “Thank you,” but now, looking at He Changzhou who seemed at a loss for words, he didn’t bother saying anything.

He considered himself a broad-minded and optimistic person. He could usually find something to complain about and vent his frustrations, which would often improve his mood. However, now he didn’t even have the energy to complain. Could this be what they call prenatal depression?

Haha, isn’t he still complaining now?

Zhao Qi chuckled lightly, but as he laughed, his eyes inexplicably filled with tears. He rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, “I’m tired. I want to sleep.”

He Changzhou immediately said, “I’ll accompany Your Majesty to sleep.”

  Zhao Qi looked at him.

”…I mean, I’ll stay by Your Majesty’s side and do nothing else.”

”But right now, I just want to be alone,” Zhao Qi said lightly, “having someone around makes me uncomfortable.”

He Changzhou hesitated for a moment, “Alright. I’ll wait outside the door until Your Majesty wakes up.”

”Suit yourself,” Zhao Qi said, then turned and got into bed, pulled the blanket over his head, and closed his eyes.

He Changzhou watched him for a long time, then walked away quietly, closing the door behind him.

Finally, Zhao Qi was alone. He loosened the grip on the blanket.

”Mmm…” Feeling a kick under his belly, he realized he wasn’t alone; the dragon egg had been with him all along.

”Little one,” Zhao Qi muttered to himself as he rubbed his stomach, “what do you think your dad really sees me as?”

At first, he was self-aware, knowing that Xiao Shiqing treated him as a puppet. Even if he used him, he didn’t mind and didn’t care. Perhaps because Xiao Shiqing had been unusually good to him lately, he had deluded himself into thinking they could be on equal footing and have an equal relationship. Now it seemed he was just daydreaming.

Xiao Shiqing was Xiao Shiqing, and he would never change.

When Jiang Dehai went to see Xiao Shiqing, Xiao Shiqing was discussing tax reforms with officials such as Pang Dai, the governor of Jiangxia. He had long intended to implement the policy of equal fields and was planning to start with Jiangxia. This matter was of great importance; since Yu Chenshui had returned, he had been busy with it at the Jiangxia office, squeezing time to inquire about the emperor’s daily life.

Jiang Dehai arrived at the Jiangxia office but couldn’t see him. Instead, he was stopped by Fu Zi, “The Prime Minister is discussing politics with Jiangxia officials. What is it, Jiang Gonggong?”

Jiang Dehai said, “This old slave is here to find the Prime Minister, naturally for His Majesty’s affairs. Please inform the Prime Minister.”

Fu Zi didn’t hesitate further, “Please wait, Gonggong.”

Fu Zi quickly returned before Jiang Dehai could react, “Gonggong, the Prime Minister invites you in.”

  ”Oh, thank you, sir.”

Jiang Dehai walked into the hall. Xiao Shiqing sat at the head of the case, with other Jiangxia officials standing on both sides, resembling a small court. Everyone’s eyes were focused on Jiang Dehai, using a phrase the Emperor had used, he looked… quite awkward.

Xiao Shiqing asked, “What does His Majesty need?”

”Returning to the Prime Minister, His Majesty…” Jiang Dehai didn’t know how to start. Was he supposed to tell the truth in front of so many officials, saying that His Majesty was in a bad mood and that as the other father of the Dragon Egg, the Prime Minister should hurry back and soothe him?

Seeing Jiang Dehai’s difficulty, Xiao Shiqing raised his hand to let the others withdraw. When only they were in the hall, he asked, “Is he uncomfortable?”

”Cheng Taiyi just took His Majesty’s pulse. His Majesty and the little princess are both very good, but…”

Xiao Shiqing encountered a rare dilemma, “Who dared to provoke the Emperor?”

Jiang Dehai hesitated, “Prime Minister, this old servant has something to say, but I’m not sure if I should.”

Xiao Shiqing glanced at him, “Speak.”

“When Prime Minister goes to appease the Emperor later, could you, um… lower yourself a bit? After all, the Emperor is the Emperor,” Jiang Dehai carefully chose his words.

Xiao Shiqing raised an eyebrow, “Are you saying that I appear aloof in his presence?”

Jiang Dehai cautiously replied, “This servant dare not speculate. It’s just that the Emperor has a good temper and a soft nature, often lacking in imperial demeanor. Whereas you, Prime Minister, are accustomed to being in control, and the Emperor, in general, is somewhat afraid of you.”

Xiao Shiqing narrowed his eyes.

Jiang Dehai couldn’t help but sigh. Seeing Prime Minister like this, it seemed he wasn’t one to coax others. He doubted if Xiao Prime Minister had ever coaxed anyone in his life, and no one dared to ask him to.

Suddenly, Xiao Shiqing said, “Bingfen.”

“What?”

“He loves the bingfen from Jiangxia.”

Jiang Dehai remarked, “Is there anything the Emperor doesn’t like to eat? He seems to enjoy everything.”

Xiao Shiqing called for Fu Zi, “Go buy two servings of bingfen from that vendor we went to last time.”

When Xiao Shiqing returned to the palace, it was already completely dark. He asked the young attendant at the door, “Did the Emperor eat well today?”

The attendant replied, “Yes, he finished everything.”

Xiao Shiqing felt slightly relieved; at least the Emperor wasn’t in a state where he couldn’t eat.

He pushed open the door and entered, finding only a single lamp lit inside. Zhao Qi was curled up in bed, facing away from him, motionless as if asleep.

He sat down beside the bed, smoothing out Zhao Qi’s scattered hair, thinking about what Jiang Dehai had said in the carriage.

The little Emperor fears him.

This had always been what he hoped for in the past. The Emperor fearing him, respecting him, obeying his every word; it would save him a lot of effort and calculation. But at some point, he started to dread the idea that the Emperor might see fear in his eyes.

Xiao Shiqing’s hand reached out to Zhao Qi’s belly, intending to greet the little princess, but Zhao Qi suddenly stiffened. “Are you awake?”

Zhao Qi knew he couldn’t keep pretending, opening his eyes and sitting up. “No, I just woke up.”

In the dim light, Zhao Qi’s face was pale, with slightly moistened eyes.

“Are you crying?” Xiao Shiqing asked.

“No, just tired,” Zhao Qi murmured, eyes downcast. “I want to sleep.”

Xiao Shiqing remained silent for a moment. “I’ll stay with you.”

Zhao Qi slowly raised his head, looking at Xiao Shiqing with a strange smile. “Does the Prime Minister take me for someone he can pamper, to sleep when he wants, and leave when he wishes?”

Xiao Shiqing’s eyes deepened, silently listening to him.

“You’d better understand, no matter what, I am the sovereign, and you are the subject.”

Xiao Shiqing said softly, “I understand very well.”

“I don’t believe you,” Zhao Qi said with red eyes. “If you really understood, why would you treat me like this? What exactly do you see me as?”

“It’s because of me,” Xiao Shiqing said, staring at Zhao Qi. “Is that right?”

Zhao Qi turned away, pointing to the door. “I don’t want to see you. Leave.”

“If you ask what I see you as,” Xiao Shiqing said softly, “I’ve never seen you as an Emperor.”

“Heh, I knew I wasn’t wrong.”

“You’re the most dazzling treasure in the world,” Xiao Shiqing’s gaze and voice softened, unlike his usual self even in tone and choice of words. “I like you very much, and I want you very much, and I’m going to get it.”

Zhao Qi was stunned for a moment and said with a heartless tone, “It’s a treasure, not a baby. So you think I’m just a plaything.”

Xiao Shiqing was quite helpless, “…I’m not.”

“You can pull it down.”

Xiao Shiqing smiled, “All the things I said you believe, but this one sentence, you don’t believe.”

Chapter 34 – “Sleeping again? Why are you always sleeping?”

Qiangzi was sitting at the table next to Zhong Weishi and the others. When he lifted his face from the hotpot, he happened to catch a glimpse of the two men beside him with their heads pressed together, smiling, completely oblivious to their surroundings.

They weren’t even drinking anything.

“What are you guys laughing at ah?” Qiangzi tilted his head and asked.

“Nothing.” The two men spoke in unison.

As Qiangzi retracted his gaze, he unintentionally noticed the identical red strings on their wrists, standing out conspicuously.

“What’s this ah? Couple bracelets? Where did you get them ah? I didn’t notice them just now.”

Before putting it on, Zhong Weishi had briefly considered the implications, but the thought was fleeting and quickly dismissed.

Now that the word “couple” had popped out of Qiangzi’s mouth, he felt his ears burning.

This, this, this… was too embarrassing!

How shameful.

Should I take it off?

The person sitting across from him didn’t seem to mind at all, lazily explaining, “It came with a donation I made for a kid a while ago. Apparently, it’s been blessed. I’ve been feeling really lucky these past couple of days—I won another free bottle twice in a row.”

“Oh? For real ah?” Qiangzi’s face lit up with excitement. “Are there more? Get me one too.”

Da Fei was just as thrilled after hearing that. “I want one too, I want one too.”

“I’ll donate again next time I run into that girl and get one for each of you bros.” Having spent so much time with Zhong Weishi, Gu Lizhou’s way of speaking had started to resemble his. When he said this, his tone was bold and uninhibited.

Qiangzi gave him a thumbs-up. “Nice, that’s real solid!”

Zhong Weishi: “…”

On the way back, everyone was talking about Duan Yi and Da Fei.

“Honestly, that surnamed Duan doesn’t seem all that bad. I thought there’d be a fight today,” A’Wei said as he pulled a retractable steel pipe from behind him. “Look, I even brought a handy weapon.”

Gu Lizhou was checking the location of their Didi driver when he heard this and burst out laughing.

Xiao Tian: “I just felt like that guy kept sneaking glances at Da Fei with those shifty eyes. He definitely had some perverted thoughts.”

Qiangzi showed off his 3D tattoo. “With me around, would he dare do anything?”

A’Wei: “He must’ve chickened out when he saw how many of us there were.”

Da Fei: “I think so too.”

Qiangzi strolled over to Zhong Weishi, bumped his elbow, and asked, “New watch ah? Where’d you snag it from?”

“Psht, I’m not a pickpocket,” Zhong Weishi scoffed and jerked his chin toward the figure ahead. “He gave it to me.”

“A gift?” Qiangzi suspiciously lifted his wrist for a closer look. “Since when did you two get so close? This brand isn’t cheap, you know.”

Zhong Weishi froze.

Was their relationship considered close?

They weren’t exactly familiar—Gu Lizhou, this person, was always so secretive, and never talked about his family. But at the same time, he seemed to go along with everything Zhong Weishi said.

That old beast was stupidly rich and kindhearted, sure—but wasn’t this a little too fvcking much…

You have no place to spend your money?

Was he sponsoring impoverished residents of Yucheng now?

Or did he really think of him as a son?

Gu Lizhou slowed his pace, and glanced back, “Heading back together? I called a car.”

“Ah.” Zhong Weishi returned to his senses and nodded, “Okay ah.”

The two walked side by side, their arms occasionally brushing against each other. The sensation was like a feather lightly grazing his skin—tingling and electrifying.

But unlike a feather, Gu Lizhou’s arm was firm and carried warmth.

Zhong Weishi stole a glance at the man beside him from the corner of his eye. Even though they were less than ten centimeters apart, even though Gu Lizhou would curve his lips slightly at Qiangzi and the others’ conversation, he still felt completely out of place with his surroundings.

Maybe the age difference played a part.

But it was exactly this mystery, this sense of detachment, that made people want to get closer.

A’Wei spotted a pretty girl in a short skirt by the roadside and followed her with his eyes. If his gaze could shoot lasers, he probably would’ve burned right through her outfit.

The hot topic of conversation somehow got to their types of girls.

Da Fei said he liked older sisters. Qiangzi preferred gentle and clingy types. Wei-ge said he wasn’t picky. When it was Gu Lizhou’s turn, Zhong Weishi’s gaze immediately followed him.

“The type doesn’t matter, because people’s preferences change with age and experience. But one thing is for sure—when you try to get close to someone, your heartbeat will definitely speed up.”

“Heart beating faster?” A’Wei clutched his chest. “Mine sped up just now when that girl walked past.”

Gu Lizhou: “It’s good that it beats, but feelings have to be mutual. You have to see if hers did too—otherwise, it’s a waste.”

A bunch of people burst into laughter.

For some reason, Zhong Weishi suddenly thought of how Gu Lizhou looked in glasses that morning, and his knees felt a little weak.

It must have been the sunlight that was too damn strong.

While waiting for the car, Gu Lizhou was looking down at trending news. Around him, Qiangzi, Da Fei, and the others were laughing heartily, the sounds of passing cars mixing in with their voices.

The group was shoving each other playfully, arms slung over shoulders.

Using this as cover, Zhong Weishi subtly leaned closer to Gu Lizhou’s side. Having just come out from an air-conditioned space, both their arms were still cold. A strange sensation spread through his body like a current in his bloodstream.

He wasn’t sure if Gu Lizhou was too focused on scrolling or if there was another reason, but the man didn’t move away.

While Zhong Weizhi’s skin was cold, his blood boiled.

Whoever could make this old beast’s heart race was unknown, but this old beast had already made his heart race more than three times.

Noticing a burning gaze from the corner of his eye, Gu Lizhou turned his head slightly. “Do I have flowers on my face?”

“Is the driver almost here?” Zhong Weishi leaned in to check the screen.

“There’s still 500 meters.” Gu Lizhou shielded his forehead from the sun, glanced to the right, then casually stole another look at Zhong Weishi as he retracted his gaze.

“Hehe.” Zhong Weishi grinned at him. “Do you have plans this afternoon?”

Gu Lizhou instinctively answered no. But then, remembering the pile of books he had yet to read, he immediately corrected himself. “Actually, I need to sleep.”

Zhong Weishi frowned. “Sleeping again? Why are you always sleeping?”

Gu Lizhou: “That’s how we old people are.”

The next second, the little bastard said something that made the corners of his lips lift.

“You’re not old, you’re not old at all.”

Gu Lizhou raised a hand and ruffled his hair before giving him a light push on the back. “Let’s go. Get in the car.”

Gu Lizhou didn’t notice that the boy hadn’t shaken his arm off this time. Nor did he know that his casual gesture had left the other covered in a thin layer of sweat.

Old or not, Gu Lizhou still had books to read.

In the end, Zhong Weishi failed to get him to hang out.

Maybe it was a case of thinking about something too much during the day and dreaming about it at night, but that night, Zhong Weishi had an absolutely ridiculous dream.

He dreamt that Gu Lizhou knocked on his door in the middle of the night, asking if they could squeeze in together. And as they squeezed, Gu Lizhou ended up hugging him from behind.

His body was scorching hot, one leg hooking around both of Zhong Weishi’s. He could hear the steady breaths behind him.

That was his clearest memory of the dream.

When he woke up, his body was still in a heated state. He lowered the air conditioner a few degrees, then grabbed his phone and mindlessly scrolled through Moments, hoping to let the rush of heat slowly fade. As a result, he clicked on the old man’s WeChat avatar as if possessed.

The last time they chatted was the night of his birthday.

After mentioning his own birthday, Gu Lizhou sent two voice messages.

“Hm, rest early.”

“Good night.”

Zhong Weishi bit down on his blanket as the deep, gentle voice echoed over and over in his empty room.

From the very first day he met Gu Lizhou, he’d thought the man was good-looking and had an insanely nice voice. The more he listened, the more he felt…

Ah!—

Can’t sleep!

Zhong Weishi flung his phone away and stomped his feet in the air a few times before finally giving in and dragging himself to the bathroom for a cold shower to calm down.

Zhong Weishi didn’t know if that red string bracelet had really been blessed, but ever since he started wearing it, his luck genuinely seemed to improve. After landing the role of the chief eunuch, he got another part with more than ten lines.

And this time, he played a rich guy who woke up every day in a thousand-square-meter villa.

“You stinking woman! You eat my food, drink my wine, use my money, sleep in my bed, and now you dare seduce another man! You even brought him into my house!”

“Speak! In the end, who is it! Is it that pretty boy you’re acting with!?”

Zhong Weishi gripped a single strand of hair between his fingers, eyes bloodshot with fury.

“You misunderstand, he and I are just ordinary friends. This is probably just a strand the cleaning lady accidentally left behind,” Gu Lizhou drawled lazily, holding a cup of coffee in one hand and a script in the other.

“You fart!”

The sheer force of “fart” sent Gu Lizhou’s bangs flying. He shut his eyes and wiped his face, brushing off the spit that had landed on him. One glance at his coffee, and he lost all interest in drinking it.

Putting down the script, he sighed. “Hey, I say, can you dial it back a bit? You’re turning into a human fountain.”

Zhong Weishi acted it out again according to his ideas.

“It’s good this time ah, like a normal person.” Gu Lizhou said applauded.

Zhong Weishi frowned. “But the director keeps telling me I’m not intense enough. He wants me to take notes from the Roaring Emperor and deliver a full-on explosive performance that leaves a deep impression.”

Gu Lizhou rubbed his temples. “Emotion needs to be expressed from within. Just shouting won’t do anything. Your director is completely unreliable.”

The new project Zhong Weishi had taken on was a modern web drama called <When Mother-in-Law Meets the Pretty Daughter-in-Law>. From the title alone, it was obvious it revolved around family drama and romance. In short, it was a dog-blood drama.

Gu Lizhou skimmed a few pages of the script and quickly realized—there wasn’t a single normal person from the main characters to the supporting characters.

The director was a fresh graduate, a little fresh meat with barely any filming experience. But he acted like a big shot—according to Zhong Weishi, everyone on set, from the crew to the actors, had to follow his lead, or they’d be fired.

Since the quality of the script wasn’t good at all, the production had to rely on other gimmicks to attract viewership. If they couldn’t afford A-list celebrities for exposure, they’d pivot to comedy, encouraging audiences to roast the show online.

This drama fell into the latter category.

Small actors like Zhong Weishi, who had no fame or status, had zero say in anything.

Gu Lizhou pulled out a cigarette and lit it. “Have you considered that if you ever get famous one day, this could all be your black history ah? Netizens will dig it up and blacken you to the bone.”

“It doesn’t matter. I don’t mind. If some people hate me, that means others will like me,” Zhong Weishi said, shaking his head. “Besides, think about it. If I ever make it big, it’ll be because I have a real hit work, right? If people compare my new project to my old ones, won’t they see my progress? Like when I read Wan Lizhou’s latest book and then his first one—I just think, he’s improved so much. He must’ve been working hard in places we can’t see.”

Gu Lizhou lowered his head and chuckled. Zhong Weishi really was a natural optimist.

His mindset was completely different from Gu Lizhou’s.

With such a resilient heart, he’d probably handle life under the public eye just fine.

“May you always keep this attitude, and I hope you land a decent director next time.”

“There are good, reliable directors out there,” Zhong Weishi said, rubbing his hands together excitedly. Sitting beside Gu Lizhou on the balcony bench, he continued, “Do you know Li Qingliang?”

Gu Lizhou, an outsider, naturally didn’t know about this. He pulled out his phone and looked him up.

Li Qingliang—an acclaimed TV drama director with nearly 20 years in the industry. He started out as a martial arts stunt double and, by a stroke of luck, transitioned into an executive director role.

The TV drama, <Spring Dawn>, broke viewership records. Not only did he win the Best Director award, but the show’s lead actress also won Best Actress.

Later, he skyrocketed to fame with a crime drama called <Xiao Ying>,1lit. Brave Eagle. which turned its two male leads into stars.

“This guy is seriously badass. Right now, he’s got a bunch of celebrities filming a new drama over at the film studios. Do you know Cheng Yue? The lead from Xiao Ying? They’re shooting the sequel now,” Zhong Weishi said, getting more and more excited. He opened Weibo and searched for the actor. “This guy—I’m his stunt double!”

Besides being a famous actor, Cheng Yue was also a top-tier singer with several albums. Even someone like Gu Lizhou, who didn’t follow celebrities, had heard a few of his songs.

But when Gu Lizhou first met Cheng Yue, he wasn’t a singer yet—because Cheng Yue was actually the younger brother of his old classmate, Cheng Hang.

Speaking of which, the pair of brothers were pretty interesting. Their family was in real estate, and their father was loaded, yet neither of them wanted to inherit the business. One went off to start a gaming company, while the other became an entertainer.

That said, Gu Lizhou wasn’t exactly close to Cheng Yue. They’d just had a few meals together.

“Do you want to come watch me film?” Zhong Weishi nudged him. “This drama has a ton of explosion scenes. Director Li uses specially made gasoline bombs—people literally get blown into the air. It’s sick.”

“They don’t use CGI? Aren’t real bombs very dangerous?

Ai, you sound like such an outsider.” The moment Zhong Weishi started talking about filming, his face lit up with enthusiasm. “We have professional explosives experts in the crew. Every blast point is precisely calculated, and the actors’ movements are all pre-arranged. Before the actual take, we run through everything multiple times—actors sprinting ahead, with explosions going off behind them like fireworks—boom, boom, boom…”

“Enough with the boom, boom, boom. Just be careful. Didn’t the news report on that one drama where a gas tank…” Before Gu Lizhou could finish, his phone rang.

While he was distracted by the call, Zhong Weishi grabbed his coffee cup and took a sip.

Burnt. Bitter. Just one mouthful had his face twisting into a grimace, his teeth bared in agony.

Vomit.

After vomiting he took another sip.

That same dizzying, burnt, bitter taste…

What kind of taste does an old man have ah?

Gu Lizhou saw his scrunched-up face and couldn’t help but chuckle.

“I booked a flight for the day after tomorrow. Isn’t the Mid-Autumn Festival the day after? I figured I’d come back for once and spend it with my grandma and the family before heading back.”

Go back!?

Zhong Weishi instantly perked up.

Where was he going back to?

Chapter 72 – I am angry.

Chapter 72 – I am angry.

After opening his eyes, Zhao Qi was stunned for a long time before he remembered where he was.

Though it was summer, there was still a chill in the village’s early morning, though the bed was warm. Zhao Qi stiffly turned his head to look at the pillow—good, no one was there, it seems everything that happened last night was just a dream.

 … Yeah, right.

This time he wasn’t drugged, nor was he drunk. He remembered every detail of last night clearly, remembered Xiao Shiqing’s hand from slightly cool to warm, remembered himself trembling in his arms endlessly, desperately holding back from making any sound, even remembering how he… lost control.

Covering his face with the blanket, Zhao Qi felt like his world view had been turned upside down. He had little education, but which boy would lose control like that? This isn’t logical!

At this moment, the dragon egg in his belly kicked under his skin, reminding Zhao Qi completely shriveled.

Alright, if even men can get pregnant and have children, then what’s the point of talking about logic?

Fortunately, Xiao Shiqing didn’t go all the way, leaving him a shred of dignity as a straight man (?).

 ”Awake?”

Upon hearing that voice, Zhao Qi buried his face deeper into the bedding. “Hmm.”

Xiao Shiqing said, “It’s time to eat.”

Zhao Qi remained silent.

Xiao Shiqing walked to the bedside and pulled away the blanket from his hand. “You’ll suffocate yourself like this.”

Zhao Qi lifted his head, meeting Xiao Shiqing’s deep gaze briefly before quickly looking away. “I’m not hungry.”

Xiao Shiqing insisted, “Even if you’re not hungry, you still need to eat.”

“I don’t want to get up.”

Xiao Shiqing didn’t force him further. He brought over a bowl of finely cooked millet porridge, took a sip himself, then offered it near Zhao Qi’s mouth. “Here.”

Zhao Qi pushed Xiao Shiqing’s hand away. “I said I don’t want to.”

Xiao Shiqing’s eyes narrowed slightly, tension growing between them. “What’s wrong with you?”

“You…” Zhao Qi blushed, “You know someone can hear us next door, yet you still insist.”

Xiao Shiqing chuckled. “Insist? Your Majesty seemed quite satisfied in my hands last night.”

“I was not comfortable at all!” Zhao Qi’s words were half-hearted; he did enjoy it, but this semi-coerced intimacy hurt his pride. Especially when Xiao Shiqing teased him so elegantly while he was completely undressed, whispering suggestive words that made him blush, and forcing him to look at those moist fingers… It was both embarrassing and strangely enjoyable, making resistance seem like playful foreplay.

Xiao Shiqing smiled faintly, and Zhao Qi, thinking he might get angry, cautiously retreated under the covers. Unexpectedly, Xiao Shiqing chuckled again. “The first time serving someone is inevitably awkward. Practice will make it better. Next time, I’ll ensure Your Majesty’s comfort.”

Zhao Qi exclaimed, “Next time?”

“For the ease of your future pregnancies, we should make this a regular occurrence.” Xiao Shiqing considered. “How about every three days?”

Zhao Qi shook his head vehemently. “No, I refuse!”

Xiao Shiqing’s tone softened, with a hint of coaxing. “Please, Your Majesty, it’s for your own good.”

“Do you call this good?”

After getting up, Zhao Qi wore a stern expression, especially towards Cheng Boyan, whom he looked at as if he had betrayed him.

“Why did you tell the Prime Minister about the midwifery?”

Cheng Boyan sighed bitterly. “The Prime Minister personally asked me, and I couldn’t lie.”

Zhao Qi was cold and ruthless. “You’ll lose your salary.”

The attendants and villagers accompanying them worked tirelessly for a day and night, finally clearing the road out of the village. Zhao Qi and his entourage, along with the recruited Yu Chenshui, began their journey back.

Throughout the journey, He Changzhou had been looking for an opportunity to speak with Zhao Qi. However, he was effectively “confined” by Xiao Shiqing, who stuck close by his side. Whenever He Changzhou approached Zhao Qi, Xiao Shiqing’s attendant would remind him aloud, “General, please don’t trouble my master.”

He Changzhou looked at Zhao Qi’s carriage from a distance, his expression deeply conflicted. Zhao Qiao yawned, riding up from behind. “General He, did you sleep well last night?”

He Changzhou glanced at him and asked back, “Did you sleep well?”

“Quite well.”

“Did you hear any noises?”

“Noises?” Zhao Qiao looked puzzled. “What noises?”

He Changzhou pursed his lips. “Nothing.” His hearing was superior to most; if Zhao Qiao hadn’t heard anything, he certainly had.

He heard indistinct voices, deliberately lowered, likely engaged in conversation. Even though he couldn’t make out the words, the mystery tortured him deeply. He couldn’t help but wonder what those two were doing, his heart feeling like it was being cut with a knife.

In truth, they had already done something long ago, He Changzhou thought wryly. The child in the emperor’s belly was the best proof.

Upon returning to Jiangxia, Yu Chenshui immediately took up his duties without rest, managing all water affairs along both banks of the Huai River. Thus, Zhao Qi’s southern inspection tour came to a close.

The day before leaving for the capital, Zhao Qi lounged in his mansion, boredly watching Jiang Dehai and Xiao Jinzi tidying up. He extended his hand, asking Cheng Boyan to check his pulse.

Since returning from the village, Zhao Qi had become withdrawn, speaking less than usual and lacking in spirits. Jiang, Jin, and Cheng, the trio, observed with concern and inquired about his condition. Zhao Qi only gave them a melancholic glance, saying, “It’s nothing. I’m just being melodramatic. Don’t worry about me.”

The three exchanged looks.

Zhao Qi did feel strangely melodramatic. Wasn’t it just a bit of assistance during childbirth? Why was he feeling so down about it? And he admitted, being assisted during childbirth was quite enjoyable.

Could it be that he was really… leaning that way?

After Cheng Boyan checked his pulse, he said, “Your Majesty and the dragon egg are both doing well. The fetal position is normal, though the dragon egg is a bit large. Please, Your Majesty, restrain your diet and move around more in your daily life.”

Zhao Qi absentmindedly agreed.

Beside him, Meichuan added, “There’s no need to worry even if the fetus is large. As long as Your Majesty uses my Warm Jade technique to clear the birth canal…”

Zhao Qi’s eye twitched. “Shut up.”

Not only did Meichuan not shut up, but he also retorted, “If Your Majesty doesn’t trust me, why bring me here from afar?”

“Enough…” Zhao Qi sighed and waved his hand. “You all may leave.”

The group exchanged glances before withdrawing together.

Xiao Jinzi was puzzled. “What’s wrong with His Majesty?”

Jiang Dehai looked worried. “I’ve served His Majesty for over a decade, and I’ve never seen him so burdened.”

Xiao Jinzi agreed, “Yes, in the past, whatever His Majesty thought was written all over his face.”

Meichuan shrugged. “Pregnant spouses and pregnant women are alike—easily irritable and anxious. It’s a common condition. Comfort them a bit, go along with them, and they’ll be fine.”

Xiao Jinzi sighed helplessly. “But we’ve comforted him, gone along with him, and His Majesty’s still not in a good mood.”

“What use is our comforting?” Cheng Boyan said. “We need the other father of the dragon egg to comfort him.”

They all suddenly realized.

Jiang Dehai, determined to serve his master, declared, “I’ll go invite the Prime Minister!”

As Jiang Dehai left, Li Chisu arrived, requesting an audience with His Majesty.

Xiao Jinzi tactfully said, “Your Majesty is not in a good mood right now. Prince, please come back another day.”

”Another day?” Li Chisu chuckled, “Tomorrow, Your Majesty will return to the capital. There won’t be another day. Inform His Majesty for me, say… this might be our last meeting in years.”

Xiao Jinzi could only reply, “Please wait a moment, Your Highness.”

Shortly after, Xiao Jinzi emerged from the room. “Your Highness, His Majesty said for you to scram… quickly return to your fief in the south and behave yourself. No need to come to the capital for duty on festive occasions anymore.”

Li Chisu sighed bitterly, “He won’t even see me for the last time. His Majesty truly dislikes me.” He paused, handing his folding fan to Xiao Jinzi. “Take this and give it to His Majesty.”

  ”This…”

”Tell His Majesty, ‘I look forward to meeting him again in the future.'”

Taking the fan, Xiao Jinzi went back inside to convey the message. Zhao Qi, without even glancing, casually replied, “Got it.”

  ”What about this fan…”

”It’s probably valuable. Take it back to the palace and store it in the treasury.”

Xiao Jinzi nodded obediently. “Your Majesty, it’s time for dinner. Shall I fetch the meal?”

No matter how frustrated, one must eat. Zhao Qi nodded. “Yes.”

The eunuch brought the meal and placed it on the table. Zhao Qi glanced at it, unsatisfied. “Why is there so little? Not even enough to fill a gap in my teeth.”

Xiao Jinzi explained, “Your Majesty, this is the portion prescribed by Physician Cheng.”

Zhao Qi’s already bad mood worsened. He picked up his chopsticks. “The mortal world is not worth it.”

Suddenly, the eunuch spoke up, “Shall I bring something delicious for Your Majesty?”

The familiar voice startled Zhao Qi so much that he dropped his chopsticks. He stared at the eunuch, testingly saying, “Changzhou?”

He Qi Changzhou raised his head and smiled at him. “Your Majesty.”

Zhao Qi scrutinized the young man before him. “Why are you dressed like this?”

”I have to, to get close to Your Majesty,” He Qi Changzhou said, “I’ve been confined by the Prime Minister.”

No wonder he hadn’t seen He Qi Changzhou around him recently.

Xiao Jinzi tactfully interjected, “I’ll guard the door for Your Majesty.”

He Qi Changzhou smiled faintly, kneeling on one knee and looking up at Zhao Qi. “Is Your Majesty angry with me?”

Zhao Qi remained impassive. “Not particularly.”

He Qi Changzhou’s eyes lit up. “Really?”

  ”Anyway, I’m numb to it.”

He Qi Changzhou hesitated, feeling guilty. “I’m sorry, Your Majesty. It’s my fault.”

Zhao Qi mocked, “You’re not wrong. How could you be wrong? It’s all my fault.”

”???” Wait… buddy, you’re even more straightforward than me. Are you sure you’re not the one with a secret passion?

Zhao Qi chuckled in annoyance, “Let’s just be polite, shall we? Are you serious?”

He Qi Changzhou was confused. “So whose fault is it in the end?”

Zhao Qi took a deep breath. “What do you want? If there’s something, report it; if there’s nothing, withdraw.”

”I want to explain to Your Majesty.”

  ”You explain, I’ll listen.”

”I actually don’t know how to explain,” He Qi Changzhou pondered, “It was as if I was possessed. When I saw Your Majesty, I couldn’t help myself…”

  ”Am I that charming?”

He Qi Changzhou shook his head, “Not just because of Your Majesty. I… I did it intentionally for the Prime Minister to see.”

”Huh?” This answer caught Zhao Qi off guard. “Why?”

He Qi Changzhou chuckled softly, “I just wanted him to taste that feeling.”

Zhao Qi was bewildered, suddenly feeling a bit estranged from the He Qi Changzhou before him.

”I couldn’t restrain my feelings for Your Majesty, but I also used Your Majesty to provoke the Prime Minister, to avenge the past.” He Qi Changzhou’s clear eyes met Zhao Qi’s, “Your Majesty, am I a bad person?”

Zhao Qi seized on the main point, “What past grievances do you have with him?”

He Qi Changzhou hesitated, unsure whether to speak. “He… “

Zhao Qi urged, “What’s wrong with him?”

He Qi Changzhou looked away, “It’s nothing.”

”I hate people who only speak half-heartedly,” Zhao Qi said impatiently, “Either don’t say it, or finish your words—do you want me to dislike you?”

He Qi Changzhou would rather die on the battlefield than be disliked by the person he liked. He said solemnly, “He once mocked Your Majesty in front of me and others.”

Zhao Qi was puzzled, “When did this happen? Why don’t I remember anything?”

”When Your Majesty was drunk in the palace.”

  ”Who else was there?”

He Qi Changzhou recalled, “Xiao Jinzi and Grand Secretary Jiang.”

Oh, they were the two people he trusted most. They all knew about it, but none of them had told him.

Seeing Zhao Qi’s expression not quite right, He Qi Changzhou raised his hand, wanting to touch Zhao Qi’s face. But when he was about to touch him, he stopped. “Your Majesty?”

  Zhao Qi blinked, “I’m fine.”

”You don’t seem fine, Your Majesty.”

Zhao Qi forced a smile, “Well, I’m indeed… a little angry.”

Chapter 34

Qian Xiaoke hadn’t slept this soundly and comfortably in a long time.

Even though he had been living in his previous place for over a month, he still couldn’t fully relax and rest, constantly feeling anxious and on edge.

In fact, Qian Xiaoke really envied those who could afford to buy a house. He knew that owning a home wasn’t everything, but for people like him who worked and lived away from their hometowns, renting always came with a sense of drifting, as if nowhere was truly home.

But he also understood that, let alone buying a house, with his current financial situation, even being able to rent a decent place was already fortunate. Thankfully, he was lucky enough to have met a good boss.

Qian Xiaoke slept soundly, completely unaware that it wasn’t because of his good boss, but because…

Jiang Tongyan was woken up by Qian Xiaoke’s alarm—a cheap, old-fashioned alarm clock he had bought online for 12 yuan, with a sound so loud it could practically take a person’s life.

The moment the alarm rang, Jiang Tongyan jolted awake in shock, almost sending his skull flying up to the ceiling. He sat up abruptly, nearly knocking Qian Xiaoke, who was in his arms, onto the floor.

Qian Xiaoke had long been accustomed to the alarm and didn’t react much. The only reason he got startled was because of Jiang Tongyan.

“What are you doing?” Qian Xiaoke frowned, his little face scrunched up in confusion.

Jiang Tongyan was also in a daze, his nerves frazzled by the alarm.

It was Qian Xiaoke who came to his senses first and turned off the alarm.

“Why didn’t you leave last night?” Qian Xiaoke tilted his head at him, then raised a hand to rub his eyes vigorously.

After he finished rubbing his eyes, he accidentally caught sight of a certain part of Jiang Tongyan’s body. Instantly, he let out a soft ‘Hya~!’ and shyly turned away.

“What are you ‘Hya’-ing about?” Jiang Tongyan got out of bed, calmly straightening his clothes and pants. “You’ve already touched it, what’s with the innocent act?”

“That’s different,” Qian Xiaoke chuckled. “That was for treatment. We were in a doctor-patient relationship back then. How can it be the same now?”

Jiang Tongyan also laughed. “Then what’s our relationship now?”

Qian Xiaoke turned slightly and glanced at him out of the corner of his eye. Only when he confirmed that Jiang Tongyan had put his pants on did he turn back around.

“A debtor-creditor relationship,” Qian Xiaoke said. “You still haven’t paid me for crashing at my place before, and now you’ve slept in my new home and on my new bed. I need to calculate exactly how much you owe me!”

Jiang Tongyan rolled his eyes where he stood, too speechless to respond.

Qian Xiaoke sniffed. “I need to take a shower. I have work later.”

He felt like he smelled like stinky tofu. Plus, when he woke up just now, it seemed like his hand had been gripping Jiang Tongyan’s… unspeakable part.

Ugh, it was a complicated feeling.

“I need a shower too,” Jiang Tongyan shamelessly said. “You got your stinky tofu all over me last night.”

“How dare you say that? Who was the one insisting on eating it?!”

“I don’t know.” Jiang Tongyan walked out. “I’m showering first!”

A new home, a new bathroom, and yet the first person to use it wasn’t the owner, Qian Xiaoke, but the freeloading Jiang Tongyan!

Qian Xiaoke was a little unhappy, but in the spirit of being a ‘kind and considerate person’, he lowered his head and let it slide.

Jiang Tongyan was secretly pleased and even called out to Qian Xiaoke, “What am I supposed to wear after my shower?”

He remembered that Qian Xiaoke should have some of his clothes here. After their first failed attempt at doing it, Qian Xiaoke had left wearing Jiang Tongyan’s clothes.

“I’ll look for them,” Qian Xiaoke said. “Hurry up and shower, I need to get to work.”

Jiang Tongyan obediently turned and went into the bathroom.

Qian Xiaoke really did find the clothes Jiang Tongyan had given him to wear before, but they had been stuffed at the bottom of a box all this time. Though they had been washed, they were a bit wrinkled.

He felt a little embarrassed. Not only had he not returned them, but he had let them become like this.

Even though he knew full well there was no iron in his house, he still wandered around, hoping to find something to use instead.

Before he could find anything, Jiang Tongyan came out.

“What are you rummaging around for?” Jiang Tongyan stood there with only a towel wrapped around his waist. “Why don’t you even have a bath towel in your house?”

Qian Xiaoke, holding Jiang Tongyan’s clothes in his arms, turned around to look at him. “They’re expensive, and there’s no real use for them. A regular towel is good enough.”

Jiang Tongyan could not refute it.

Their lives were simply too different—they were people from completely different worlds.

At that moment, a thought suddenly crossed Jiang Tongyan’s mind: If he and Qian Xiaoke got together one day, would it be Qian Xiaoke accommodating him, or would he be the one accommodating Qian Xiaoke?

Could two people from entirely different worlds trying to be together really lead to a good outcome?

Jiang Tongyan felt a little lost.

But now was clearly not the time to dwell on such thoughts.

He said, “Let me put on some clothes first.”

Jiang Tongyan covered his important parts with a towel and walked toward Qian Xiaoke. He then asked wickedly, “Why aren’t you feeling shy?”

“Why should I be shy?” Qian Xiaoke remained completely unfazed by the so-called ‘macho man stepping out of the shower’ scene. He casually shook out Jiang Tongyan’s shirt and commented, “It’s a bit wrinkled.”

His voice dropped toward the end of the sentence—feeling a bit guilty. The shirt was honestly in an embarrassing state, and it was his fault, though not entirely.

After parting ways that day, Qian Xiaoke never expected to see this man again. Besides, his own clothes were all cheap market buys. His T-shirts cost twenty or thirty yuan and weren’t anything precious. He could toss them on the sofa without worrying about wrinkles. But Jiang Tongyan’s clothes? Couldn’t touch, couldn’t fold, couldn’t even look at them the wrong way.

So this was what brand-name clothes were like? Like this?

Having never owned any, Qian Xiaoke was bewildered.

Jiang Tongyan glanced at the shirt Qian Xiaoke handed over—wrinkled beyond belief, making his head hurt. But in the end, he reluctantly decided to wear it.

He didn’t have much of a choice anyway. It was clear there were no other options.

And so, the refined and polished Jiang Tongyan transformed into the scruffy and unkempt Jiang Tongyan.

The shirt issue was settled, but another problem arose.

“Qian Xiaoke, do you… have large-sized underwear?”

Now, that was a soul-searching question.

Qian Xiaoke pursed his lips and glanced at a certain part of Jiang Tongyan’s body.

“You wearing mine… doesn’t seem appropriate.”

Jiang Tongyan thought: No way. Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t fit into them!

With his nearly 1.9-meter height compared to Qian Xiaoke’s 1.75 meters, their sizes weren’t even remotely compatible. If he tried wearing Qian Xiaoke’s underwear, it’d probably cut off his circulation.

“Then I don’t have any,” Qian Xiaoke said. “You’ll just have to go without.”

Fine, I’ll just accept my fate.

Ever since meeting Qian Xiaoke, Jiang Tongyan had been through all kinds of situations. His life experience had definitely been enriched. He figured that one day when he was old and flipping through the memories of his life, the most exciting chapters would all be written by Qian Xiaoke.

       Qian Xiaoke—what a legend.

After dealing with Jiang Tongyan, Qian Xiaoke rushed into the bathroom for a quick shower. Since he had no idea where to find a good breakfast stall near his new place and didn’t want to take any chances, he took the initiative to invite Jiang Tongyan to have breakfast at his place.

Jiang Tongyan asked, “Do you even have ingredients?”

Qian Xiaoke shook the pack of instant noodles in his hand.

Jiang Tongyan really wanted to refuse. However, his mouth completely ignored his brain’s protests and blurted out, “Sure.”

Excited, Qian Xiaoke rubbed his hands together—finally, a chance to showcase his cooking skills.

       “Do you have a pot?”

       Of course, Qian Xiaoke did!

He had a small cooking pot—worked like a charm, but it was a pity he couldn’t use it at his previous place.

Fresh out of the shower, Qian Xiaoke’s hair was still dripping wet as he grabbed the instant noodles and dashed into the kitchen. Jiang Tongyan stood there watching him move around, watching the droplets from his hair slide down onto his shoulders and soak into his shirt. Without realising it, he started to smile.

All those thoughts about lifestyle differences.

All those concerns about coming from different worlds.

Suddenly, they didn’t seem so impossible to overcome.

Qian Xiaoke’s world was actually kind of interesting. At least right now, Jiang Tongyan didn’t feel like he was accommodating anyone at all.

And so, on this fresh and pleasant morning, the two of them shared a bowl of instant noodles—boiled and eaten with spoons because all of Qian Xiaoke’s noodles had been crushed to bits.

Qian Xiaoke’s apartment had a small dining area with a modest square table. The two of them sat across from each other.

Jiang Tongyan found the whole scene a bit ridiculous—he had never seen anyone eating instant noodles with a spoon before.

“What are you laughing at?” Qian Xiaoke looked up at him.

“I’m laughing at you,” Jiang Tongyan said. “Laughing at how dumb you are.”

“Why are you picking on me first thing in the morning?!” Qian Xiaoke pouted. “Can’t you say something nice for once?”

Jiang Tongyan suppressed a smile and looked at him. “What’s there to compliment?”

Qian Xiaoke pursed his lips and thought about it. It seemed that there was really nothing.

He fell silent, looking dejected as he continued eating his breakfast.

Jiang Tongyan hated seeing him like that. After a moment’s thought, he said, “Your cooking skills are actually pretty good.”

       “Huh?”

“Huh what?” Jiang Tongyan said. “I just complimented you.”

Qian Xiaoke froze for a second, then broke into an arrogant grin. After laughing to his heart’s content, he said, “Jiang Tongyan, you’re such a tsundere!”

Jiang Tongyan frowned. “Of course. I’m excellent—why wouldn’t I be proud?”

“Not proud1jiāo’ào! It’s Tsundere2àojiāo!” Qian Xiaoke said. “Don’t you know what ‘Tsundere’ means?”

Even if Jiang Tongyan didn’t, he wasn’t about to admit it. He couldn’t let Qian Xiaoke think he was an idiot.

If a fool thought he was a fool, then what did that make him? A double fool?

What kind of nonsense was that?

Swiftly changing the subject, Jiang Tongyan asked, “What time should I come over tonight?”

       “Huh?”

“What do you mean by ‘huh’? Don’t think you can get out of this,” Jiang Tongyan said. “Last night, you fell asleep halfway through—I’m keeping track of that debt.”

“Oh!” Qian Xiaoke suddenly understood. “Last night was an accident. Let’s start earlier tonight so that I won’t fall asleep again out of boredom.”

       Bored?

Jiang Tongyan instantly caught onto the key point.

“You were bored? While you were touching me?”

Qian Xiaoke knew he had said something wrong and hurried to coax him. “Ahh, no, that’s not what I meant! I misspoke. You can scold me!”

He blinked his big eyes at Jiang Tongyan. “If scolding me isn’t enough, you can hit me too!”

Faced with this version of Qian Xiaoke, Jiang Tongyan was utterly helpless.

He was done for. Completely and utterly done for. He had been completely wrapped around this careless idiot’s little finger.

       For what?

       What was the appeal?

       His poverty?

His sharp tongue and lack of brain cells?

Jiang Tongyan was filled with regret. He should have hooked up with that flight attendant at Zhou Mo’s birthday party. If he had, Qian Xiaoke wouldn’t have had the chance to take advantage of him.

But it was too late for regrets. Not only had Qian Xiaoke taken advantage of the situation, but Jiang Tongyan had also sunk into this mess so deep he couldn’t get out.

Qian Xiaoke watched the man sitting across from him, whose face was twitching weirdly as he ate. He wondered if something was wrong with him. Should he suggest that Jiang Tongyan go to the hospital for a check-up?

Did Jiang Tongyan even have domestic health insurance?

The two of them sat across from each other, eating breakfast, each lost in their own thoughts—completely out of sync.

Once they finished eating and Qian Xiaoke cleaned up, they left the apartment together.

As they stepped out, Qian Xiaoke casually mused, “I wonder what kind of neighbour I would have. Hopefully, they’re easy to get along with.”

“What kind of neighbour do you hope for?” Jiang Tongyan asked deliberately as they entered the elevator.

Qian Xiaoke pursed his lips, seriously considering it. The more he thought about it, the redder his ears became.

Jiang Tongyan raised a brow. “What are you thinking about?”

His ears were red—surely, it wasn’t something decent! Probably something dirty.

Qian Xiaoke smiled shyly. “I’m thinking about my neighbour.”

Jiang Tongyan chuckled. “Thinking what about your neighbor?”

“I was just thinking… it’d be great if my neighbour were a hot guy,” Qian Xiaoke mumbled, fidgeting with the hem of his T-shirt. “I read a novel once where the protagonist ended up with his neighbour.”

Jiang Tongyan instinctively straightened his back.

“I like younger tops,” Qian Xiaoke continued. “Ideally, someone in their early twenties, a bright and sunny type. Someone who could go out and set up a street stall with me at night to make money!”

       Jiang Tongyan’s smile instantly vanished.

“Why?” he demanded. “What’s wrong with a mature, successful man? Wouldn’t that save you at least fifty years of struggling?”

“That’s not for me,” Qian Xiaoke said matter-of-factly before launching into complete nonsense. “Marrying into a rich family sounds great, sure, but I could never handle the life of a wealthy housewife. Too much pressure! What if they expect me to have kids? I definitely can’t deal with that! I’d much rather be with someone I can struggle and grow with—supporting each other, facing hardships together, and weathering every storm side by side! Chairman Jiang, don’t you think I’m absolutely right?”

Jiang Tongyan was so furious he nearly saw red. The urge to strangle this little bastard surged through him.

He snapped, “Qian Xiaoke, shut the hell up!”
