Chapter 20 – Accident

On the morning of the second Friday, Song Jun had to go to the school’s affiliated hospital to take a blood sample.

He had already contacted the clinical laboratory of the hospital in advance, and Song Jun only needed to go directly from the lab. That morning, he went to the lab first, prepared the system, added samples, put them in the PCR machine and let the machine run, then packed up and went to the hospital.

Unexpectedly, as soon as Song Jun walked into the hospital door, he saw a lot of noise on the first floor of the surgical inpatient department, as if something was going on.

He didn’t plan to butt in at first, but then he accidentally noticed a familiar figure in the crowd, and it turned out to be Feng Junyuan.

Song Jun hadn’t seen Feng Junyuan for several days. The campus was so big, and the two of them major in different majors. If it were not intentional, it would be difficult to have the opportunity to meet.

After hesitating, Song Jun walked towards the inpatient department, wanting to see what was going on. When he got closer, he realised that those noisy people were here because of Feng Junyuan.

Feng Junyuan was doing his internship at the hospital, and as a graduate student, he had responsibilities similar to a resident doctor. Medical disputes were inevitable in the hospital. Although it wasn’t clear what the argument was about, Song Jun could probably tell that those people were likely relatives of patients.

A woman was crying, and a man was holding Feng Junyuan’s arm to prevent him from leaving.

Feng Junyuan looked a little disinterested but did not break away from the man’s hand.

Suddenly, Song Jun saw the man raise his fist and hit Feng Junyuan in the face, cracking his right cheek.

The security guard quickly came up to stop him, and Song Jun rushed over this time, pulling Feng Junyuan away from the angry couple.

Feng Junyuan was slightly surprised when he saw Song Jun.

Song Jun pulled him and said, “Let’s go first.”

Feng Junyuan did not refuse, and Song Jun took him around to the cargo elevator behind the hospital building.

Song Jun and Feng Junyuan went to the department floor where Feng Junyuan was interning. The nurses who were busy at the nursing station all looked at him. They must all know about the dispute just now.

Song Jun asked the nurse for disinfectant and gauze and helped Feng Junyuan treat the wound on his face in the treatment room next to the nurse station.

       Feng Junyuan remained silent.

“Who were those people just now?” Song Jun sprayed disinfectant near his wound and then wiped it dry with a cotton swab.

Feng Junyuan did not answer his question.

Then Song Jun put gauze on the wound and asked, “What happened on Ghost Festival?”

Feng Junyuan glanced at him this time but still didn’t speak.

Song Jun also felt that it was too difficult to communicate with this person, so he put gauze on him with a bandaid and then said, “You must be busy. I’ll leave first.”

Feng Junyuan watched him leave in silence.

When Song Jun walked to the elevator, he couldn’t help but look back at Feng Junyuan, remembering the way he turned into the beautiful golden weapon in Xia Hongshen’s hands that night. In fact, Song Jun found it somewhat puzzling—why did Xia Hongshen, who clearly knew Feng Junyuan’s identity, not bring him back? However, these questions, if asked to Xia Hongshen, would surely go unanswered. Seeing Feng Junyuan’s expression of disbelief at that moment, Song Jun realised that even Feng Junyuan himself might not have fully understood what had happened.

He went to the laboratory to take a blood sample and carried it in a plastic bag. When Song Jun was riding in the elevator, he heard two nurses chatting about what happened on the first floor of the inpatient department.

It turned out that a little girl in the Thoracic Surgery department had died on the operating table, and it just so happened that Feng Junyuan was the little girl’s attending doctor. In fact, it really had nothing to do with Feng Junyuan because the little girl’s surgery was inherently risky, and the family had been notified of the situation before the operation. Moreover, Feng Junyuan was not the chief surgeon; he was merely carrying out the tasks assigned to him. It seemed somewhat unfair to blame him for the girl’s death.

But the family members obviously didn’t think so. He was the attending doctor, and he was the one who communicated with the family members. Now that something happened to the child, he was definitely the first one they sought out.

The two nurses spoke, feeling a little sorry for Feng Junyuan but also a little worried, fearing that something might happen next.

Song Jun listened silently. He originally planned to go back to the lab after taking the blood sample, but now he couldn’t help but want to look for Feng Junyuan again.

He didn’t know why, but he seemed to have some natural affinity for Feng Junyuan.

He returned to the Thoracic Surgery Department. Song Jun found the nurse and asked Feng where Junyuan was.

The nurse pointed to the doctor’s office.

Song Jun walked over and saw Feng Junyuan sitting alone in a chair, staring at the computer in a daze. He was obviously not in a very high mood. Although it didn’t show on his face, he looked completely out of spirits.

Song Jun knocked on the door, and Feng Junyuan turned around to see him and said, “You haven’t left yet?”

“Are you okay?” Song Jun asked.

Feng Junyuan raised his hand and touched the gauze on his face, and said, “It’s fine.”

Song Jun looked at him, hesitating whether to go back and tell Xia Hongshen about this.

In the end, Feng Junyuan stood up at this time. He reached out and started to unbutton his white coat. After taking off his white coat, he went to the cabinet next to him to get a towel and shower gel. Then he said to Song Jun, “I’m going to take a shower. Do you want to join?”

Song Jun knew that he was expelling guests, saw that his attitude was unfriendly, and did not want to shamelessly stay to comfort him, so he decided to leave.

Feng Junyuan walked past him holding something and walked towards the shower room at the end of the corridor.

Song Jun was about to leave, but he saw Feng Junyuan leaving his cell phone on the computer table. Seeing people coming and going here, Song Jun hesitated, went over to pick up the phone, and planned to give it to Feng Junyuan.

The corridor past the doctor’s duty room had no wards or windows. There were rooms on both sides, including the director’s and attending’s offices, as well as the duty lounges for doctors and nurses. At the end were toilets and shower rooms.

Feng Junyuan had already entered the shower room.

Song Jun chased after him with his cell phone and knocked on the door outside.

Feng Junyuan had probably turned on the shower inside and didn’t hear the knock on the door, so he didn’t respond.

Song Jun turned the doorknob tentatively and found that it was unlocked. He opened the door a crack and discovered that there were two small cubicles with closed doors. Feng Junyuan was in the right cubicle, draining water, and the door had been closed.

When Song Jun was about to call him, he was suddenly speechless because, in the blurry and steamy light of the shower room, Song Jun saw a little girl squatting outside the door of the small cubicle on the right.

The little girl was pale and wearing a patient gown. She was squatting on the ground and reaching out a hand from under the cubicle door.

Before Song Jun had time to scream, he only heard Feng Junyuan making a short and sharp sound inside the cubicle, and then he suddenly opened the door of the cubicle.

       The little girl was gone.

Feng Junyuan was still naked, with water droplets sliding down his body. His face was a little pale, and he looked at Song Jun, who was standing at the door. Both of them saw fear in each other’s eyes, and for a while, neither could snap out of it.

After a while, Feng Junyuan reached out to turn off the water, picked up a towel and wrapped it around his lower body. He asked Song Jun, “What did you see?”

Song Jun knew that he had also seen it and that it was not his hallucination.

Feng Junyuan raised his hand and wiped the water on his face. He wanted to walk out of the cubicle, but Song Jun suddenly said, “Wait a minute.”

After saying that, Song Jun pointed to the floor and told him to look. Feng Junyuan lowered his head and discovered wet footprints on the dry floor outside the partition. They were children’s footprints, leading from the entrance of the shower cubicle where Feng Junyuan was bathing all the way to where Song Jun stood outside the shower room door, disappearing into the corridor.

Song Jun’s scalp was numb, and when he saw Feng Junyuan’s face across from him, he didn’t look good either.

Both of them were stunned for a while, and Song Jun said, “Do you want me to wait for you?”

Feng Junyuan was silent for a moment and nodded.

After getting dressed, Feng Junyuan and Song Jun came out of the shower room together.

Song Jun asked him, “Who is that?”

Feng Junyuan shook his head and said after a while, “I saw a hand reaching in, as if it wanted to grab my leg.”

Song Jun said, “It’s a little girl, wearing a patient uniform.”

At this point, Song Jun suddenly fell silent because he thought of the little girl he had heard from the nurse who died on the operating table. Song Jun turned to look at Feng Junyuan. Sure enough, Feng Junyuan looked a little stunned, obviously thinking of the little girl.

Did that little girl, like her parents, want to seek revenge from Feng Junyuan?

The two people went out of the corridor and came to the front of the nurse’s station.

As soon as the nurse saw Feng Junyuan, she said, “Dr. Feng, Dr. Xiang was looking for you just now.”

       Feng Junyuan gave an ‘En’.

At this time, Song Jun saw a tall and handsome male doctor walking towards him. He was holding a medical record in his hand, wearing a surgical gown and a white coat, as if he had just gotten off the operating table.

The young nurse who was talking to Feng Junyuan saw him from a distance and greeted him with a smile, “Dr. Xiang, Dr. Feng is here.”

The handsome male doctor nodded and flashed a smile at Feng Junyuan when he saw him.

Feng Junyuan was still as indifferent as ever.

The doctor put the medical records on the table in front of the nurse’s station and said to Feng Junyuan, “Xiao Feng, get ready. You’ll be assisting me in surgery this afternoon.”

       Feng Junyuan nodded, “I understand.”

Seeing that nothing happened, Song Jun said to Feng Junyuan, “Then I’ll leave first.”

Before Feng Junyuan could say anything, Dr. Xiang took the initiative and said to Song Jun, “Are you also a student of our school?”

Song Jun was stunned for a moment and nodded, “Hello, teacher.”

Dr. Xiang smiled and said, “Hello, student. Which major? What’s your name?”

Song Jun was not familiar with this Dr. Xiang and wondered if he was so kind to all the students. However, this person had a good attitude, and it was easy to get a good impression of him, so he said, “My name is Song Jun. I am not a clinical doctor. I am a graduate student in Forensic Medicine.”

“Oh,” Dr. Xiang said with a smile, “Forensic Medicine is a good profession, unlike clinical medicine, which is tiring and stressful.”

Song Jun smiled and said nothing.

Then Dr. Xiang stood next to the nurse’s station and chatted with him a few more words while flipping through the medical records. He also took the time to talk to Feng Junyuan about the patient on his bed.

Song Jun was embarrassed to leave.

Later, Dr. Xiang closed the medical record, looked at the time, and said, “It’s almost time. Let’s go have a meal first. After dinner, we will prepare for the operation. Xiao Song will come along too.”

“Huh?” Song Jun was stunned for a moment, “No, how can I be so shameless.”

Dr. Xiang smiled and said, “What’s there to be shameful about? I’m treating you today. You students rarely eat well. Don’t hold back and come with me.”

The other party was so polite that Song Jun couldn’t refuse. He left a bag of blood samples in the doctor’s office and followed Dr. Xiang and Feng Junyuan to the hospital cafeteria.

Chapter 19 – To Like

The school year officially started in September, and Song Jun could have applied for a postgraduate dormitory at the dormitory management centre by now if he wanted to. However, he hadn’t thought about it. Apart from being very close to the lab, he was very satisfied with all the conditions of this dormitory now, and it was cheaper than the school dormitory. He felt that there was really no need to move to the dormitory.

And there was Senior Brother Xia across the hall. Of course, Senior Brother Bu was also very nice and took good care of him.

Official enrollment meant that classes were about to begin. Most of his postgraduate courses were concentrated in the first year, with more challenging subjects such as molecular biology. It was said that the failure rate for that subject was quite high, so he had to buckle down and focus on attending classes and studying.

The lab side had not relaxed at all. Zhou Yingchun was still waiting for his article to be published and his title to be evaluated. As Zhou Yingchun’s only disciple now, Song Jun was under a lot of pressure.

The experiment ran into bottlenecks from time to time. Song Jun couldn’t laugh or cry when he heard a fellow doctoral student in the same lab claim that he was going to burn incense and pray to Bodhisattva to bless the results of the experiment.

Fortunately, Song Jun had Xia Hongshen, who could help him.

Song Jun heard from a fellow doctoral student in the lab that Xia Hongshen used to be very good at physical evidence1In evidence law, physical evidence is any material object that plays some role in the matter that gave rise to the litigation, introduced as evidence in a judicial proceeding to prove a fact in issue based on the object’s physical characteristics.. In three years, he published four SCI2Science Citation Index, a database and indexing service that covers a wide range of academic disciplines. papers, and the head of the graduate school approached him early on, urging him to go straight to the doctorate. However, Dr Xia Hongshen, refused to continue studying physical evidence doctorate, stating that he wanted to pursue pathology.

As a result, in order to keep him, the college even agreed to recommend him to be exempted from the examination, and he went to study in the pathology programme of the same college.

With Xia Hongshen’s help, Song Jun felt that the experiment went much more smoothly. Every time the data came out, Xia Hongshen would help him analyse it and even help him adjust the experimental conditions, which was more effective than Zhou Yingchun’s suggestions.

One afternoon, Xia Hongshen helped Song Jun configure a system. Then someone from the pathology teaching and research office down below asked for him, so he put down his things and went down first.

Song Jun sat in front of the experimental table and continued to pack the system reagents. Suddenly, he heard a girl in the same grade next to him say, “Senior Brother Xia is treating you really well; my boyfriend isn’t even that good to me.”

Song Jun was stunned for a moment when he heard this. He actually knew that Xia Hongshen was very good to him, but he had never thought about being compared to a lover by a girl.

In fact, if he thought about it carefully, did Senior Brother Xia more or less like him? Song Jun thought maybe it was not the ordinary kind of love but the kind of love between lovers.

Strange, wasn’t it? Both of them were men. Song Jun had lived for more than 20 years and had never had anything to do with anyone of the same or opposite sex, but he vaguely felt that Xia Hongshen probably liked him. Just like him, he also liked Xia Hongshen.

Just like he also liked Xia Hongshen?!

At that instant, Song Jun’s ears turned red. Luckily, he was lying on his back in front of the lab bench, so no one could see him.

He was a little at a loss, but he felt that there was nothing surprising. It was true that he liked Xia Hongshen. He could feel it himself, otherwise, why would he care so much about Xia Hongshen’s identity and Xia Hongshen’s attitude towards him.

Song Jun felt a little complicated as if he was a little happy and a little uneasy at the same time.

He paused momentarily while holding the pipette in his hand, and he began to think that maybe it was a good thing that he was an orphan—no one would care whether he liked a man or a woman or whether he would get married and have children. However, what about Senior Brother Xia? But then, Senior Brother Xia was not a human at all; he was a deity. He was here looking for something, and maybe once he found it, he would leave. But then again, who knows? He wouldn’t age or die, and he may have a long life. It was possible that even when he grew old or passed away, Senior Brother Xia still hadn’t found what he was looking for.

But there was nothing to be happy about. At that time, he would already be an old man, and Senior Brother Xia would still be the same Senior Brother Xia.

Song Jun suddenly became sad and began to envy Feng Junyuan. Wasn’t Feng Junyuan Senior Brother Xia’s weapon? He would never grow old or die. He had been with Senior Brother Xia for a long time. The two of them would be together all the time…

Just like that, an afternoon passed, and the results of Song Jun’s experiment came out.

When Xia Hongshen came, she saw Song Jun sitting in front of the experimental table in a daze and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Song Jun was immediately in a hurry and started to pack his things, “Nothing.”

Xia Hongshen looked at the computer screen and said, “It will take another two hours for the results to come out.”

Song Jun was a little embarrassed. It was all because he wasted time in the afternoon thinking about it. As a result, the experimental data was too late and still couldn’t be released. “Let’s go eat first,” he said.

Xia Hongshen said, “Wait, let’s eat here.”

       Song Jun was stunned.

Xia Hongshen had done this kind of thing before when he was studying for a master’s degree in the Physical Evidence Teaching and Research Office.  In the cabinet, he still keeps the small pot he used to cook dumplings back then. He heated it on the lab’s induction cooker, bought frozen dumplings, and used disposable bowls and chopsticks.

The two of them were cooking dumplings in the lab.

Song Jun found it very interesting. It was the first time for him to do such a thing.

In fact, the frozen dumplings were not very delicious, and there was no vinegar or other seasonings to dip them in, but the fact that they were cooked and eaten in the lab seems to add a layer of deliciousness to the food. Moreover, he was eating with Xia Hongshen.

Xia Hongshen was wearing a white lab coat, with one hand in his pocket and a chopstick in the other hand, gently stirring the pot.

Song Jun leaned over and asked, “Is it ready?”

“It’s almost ready,” Xia Hongshen said as he turned down the heat of the induction cooker.

When the dumplings were cooked, he first gave them to Song Jun to eat, “Be careful, it’s hot.”

Song Jun ate one, and it was indeed a little hot. He gasped for several breaths before he could swallow the dumpling.

“Is it done?” Xia Hongshen asked him.

Song Jun nodded, “It is, it’s delicious.”

Xia Hongshen then used the same pair of chopsticks to pick one up and put it into his mouth, then nodded, “Okay.”

Song Jun noticed his movements and couldn’t help but smile. This feeling made him feel very satisfied.

That night, the two of them finished a bag of frozen dumplings in the lab. As a result, Song Jun was a little full after eating. He felt sick to his stomach while lying in bed at night. He tossed and turned for a long time before falling asleep.

Before falling asleep, Song Jun was still thinking about how nice Senior Brother Xia was and that he liked him so much.

On the last day of September, Song Jun had no classes that afternoon and took a nap before going directly to the lab. Downstairs at Forensic Medicine, he met the young detective Long Xing again.

Probably because of a recent case, two police cars were parked below the Forensic Medicine building.

Long Xing, wearing a T-shirt and jeans, was squatting on the roadside playing with his mobile phone. He looked a bit like a high school student.

When Song Jun passed by, he took the initiative to greet Long Xing.

Long Xing raised his head and squinted his eyes slightly under the noon sun. Then he recognised Song Jun, stood up with a smile and said, “Teacher Song.”

These police officers often couldn’t tell whether they were teachers or students here, so they addressed them as ‘Teacher’ in general.

But Song Jun felt a little embarrassed. He said to Long Xing, “Stop calling me Teacher, Officer Long. Call me Song Jun.”

Long Xing immediately changed his words, “Song Jun. Then you can also call me Long Xing.”

Knowing that Long Xing was younger than himself, Song Jun didn’t think there was anything wrong with calling him by his name. He asked, “You got another case?”

Long Xing nodded, “I’m going to trouble Teacher Xia again.”

“Senior Brother Xia?” Song Jun turned to look at the people coming in and out of the Forensic Medicine building door and asked, “Is he here?”

Long Xing shook his head, “It seems that he hasn’t arrived yet. The body was brought here early in the morning. Now, in the autopsy room, two students seem to be there. They said they are waiting for Teacher Xia to come.”

Song Jun said, “Okay. Then I’ll go up first.”

Long Xing waved to him, “Bye.”

Song Jun walked forward, and Long Xing squatted down to play his mobile game again.

Suddenly, Song Jun heard Long Xing shout “Oh!”. He turned around and saw Xia Hongshen coming over. Xia Hongshen was holding a book in his hand. When he passed by Long Xing, he knocked on Long Xing’s head with the book.

Long Xing was very happy to see Xia Hongshen and stood up immediately, “Teacher Xia, you are finally here.”

The expression on Xia Hongshen’s face remained unchanged, and he glanced at the screen of his mobile phone, “You haven’t passed the level yet?”

Long Xing looked a little distressed, “I haven’t beaten this level for a week, and if I can’t beat it, there’s no way to beat the next level.”

Xia Hongshen stretched out her hand and said, “Give it to me.”

Long Xing quickly handed him the phone, then took his book and got closer to watch Xia Hongshen play games.

Xia Hongshen lowered his head and pressed his fingers on the screen of Long Xing’s mobile phone, but Long Xing had a nervous expression on his face.

After a while, Song Jun saw Long Xing laughing happily and shouted, “Passed!”

Xia Hongshen returned the phone to him.

Long Xing stared at the screen of his mobile phone with a smile on his face, “Why can’t I do it? Teacher Xia is indeed better!”

Xia Hongshen didn’t say anything, took his book back and walked towards the building.

Song Jun turned around and left when he saw Xia Hongshen returning the phone to Long Xing. When Xia Hongshen came in, Song Jun had already entered the elevator.

Long Xing was left alone outside, still immersed in the excitement of passing the game.

After a while, Long Xing’s colleague came over and kicked him, “I asked you to explain the situation to the victim’s family. Did you do it?”

Long Xing held the phone firmly and said, “They were crying very emotionally, and no one listened to me…”

“Just because nobody listens to you, does that mean you don’t have to speak? Does that mean you won’t take your salary for this month as well?”

Long Xing averted his gaze and pursed his lips.

“Don’t go in yet! The autopsy has already begun!”

       Long Xing nodded, “I’m in.”

Chapter 18 – Soul Suppressing Pagoda

The guard led Xia Hongshen and Song Jun into the temple. Instead of entering the main hall, they went directly to the side hall on the right.

Song Jun walked and looked at the City God’s Temple, feeling that it was not much different from the Taoist temples in the mortal realm. It was just that he had never tried to go to a temple late at night, so he had never seen this dark and empty temple scene.

Next to him, Xia Hongshen did not glance sideways.

When they arrived at a side hall on the right, there was still a furnace with burning incense and candles on the square in front of the hall. The palace behind the square was majestic. Although it was not as impressive as the main hall, it still looked quite impressive. There was a plaque hanging on the door of the palace, with big characters of ‘Yin and Yang Division’ flying in the air.

There was a person standing in the square. Because his back was to them, Song Jun could only see that the person had long hair hanging down his waist. He was wearing a dark coloured Zhiduo1a long straight robe usually seen in ancient settings, and was holding a lit incense stick in his hand. He was inserting his hand into the cauldron beside him.

As if he knew someone was coming in, the man turned back and looked at Song Jun and the others.

When Song Jun saw his face, he was startled and stopped for a moment.

That man was not actually ugly. Not only was he not ugly, but he had delicate features and a handsome appearance. However, the person’s face was divided right down the middle, and the left and right sides were actually different colours. One side was pale, and the other side extremely dark, giving them a somewhat terrifying appearance.

The guide, who was a general, bowed to the person and said, “Lord Magistrate, the guests have already been invited inside.”

The man nodded, and the general took his leave first.

Later, when Song Jun saw the man, he bowed politely and said, “The Lord Immortal Zhen2Zhenniao, often simply zhen, is a name given in many Chinese myths, annals, and poetry to poisonous birds that are said to have existed in what is now southern Chinahas graced us with his presence. I apologize for welcoming you from afar.”

Xia Hongshen said, “Where did the term Lord Immortal come from? Don’t you mean a demon beast Zhen meeting Lord Magistrate of Yin and Yang Department?”

His words sounded sarcastic, but his tone was calm.

That man was the Lord Magistrate of the Yin and Yang Division, the first division under the City God. Hearing this, he bowed again and said, “The Lord Immortal must be joking. The Night Patrol God is a rude and reckless person when he is angry. So, Lord Immortal, please don’t take it to heart.”

       Xia Hongshen did not respond.

Song Jun was embarrassed to respond coldly when others were being polite to him, and he suddenly felt that the atmosphere was a bit awkward.

The Lord Magistrate of the Yin and Yang Division didn’t seem to care about Xia Hongshen’s attitude and said, “Is Lord Immortal here today for what happened on Ghost Festival?”

Xia Hongshen said, “On that day, Fengliu disturbed the order of the Hundred Ghost Parade and harmed innocent spirits. I am here to compensate on his behalf.”

“Oh?” The Lord Magistrate of the Yin and Yang Division slowly walked towards their direction.

Xia Hongshen closed his fingers, and in his hand appeared a small porcelain bottle. He threw the porcelain vase to the Lord Magistrate of the Yin and Yang Division and said, “For stabilising the soul.”

The Lord Magistrate of the Yin and Yang Division took it in his hand and sighed, “It’s a treasure from the Immortal realm. I’d like to thank Lord Immortal on behalf of that ghost.”

After saying that, the Lord Magistrate of the Yin and Yang Division looked at Song Jun, and after a moment, he said strangely, “This gentleman is not a Gilded Phoenix Wing.”

Song Jun felt a bit uneasy under his gaze and instinctively moved a bit closer in the direction of Xia Hongshen.

Xia Hongshen said, “He is not.”

The Lord Magistrate of the Yin and Yang Division sized at Song Jun for a moment, seemingly a little confused, and then said to Xia Hongshen, “Since Lord Immortal has already arrived, please wait for a moment. The Night Patrol God should offer you an apology for what happened that day.”

Xia Hongshen did not respond but did not refuse.

Soon, the Night Patrol God came to the side hall carrying his long blade. It was obvious that he had learned his lesson before. Although he had a dark face at this time, he still respectfully bowed to Xia Hongshen and said, “Lord Immortal, there were many misunderstandings before, and I have offended you.”

Xia Hongshen originally didn’t care about the Night Patrol God’s attitude toward him. The reason why he came to the City God’s Temple was not only because Feng Junyuan got into trouble that day but also because he wanted to continue to stay in this place.

He hadn’t found all his things yet, and he couldn’t leave the city yet. In the past, the more friction he had with the City God’s men, the more inconvenient it would be. Since the people here now show their intention of backing down, he, of course, took the opportunity to make his intentions known.

Xia Hongshen said to Night Patrol God, “Now that the misunderstanding from before has been clarified let bygones be bygones. In the future, our actions need not concern each other.”

The Night Patrol God was about to get angry when he heard this but was restrained by the Lord Magistrate of the Yin and Yang Division’s hand on his arm.

Xia Hongshen continued, “I came to the mortal realm in search of the immortal treasure, the Thousand-Year Lamp, as per the decree of the Jade Emperor. While in the mortal realm, I will conduct myself with restraint and will not disrupt the order of the mortal world. Lord City God can rest assured.”

The Lord Magistrate of the Yin and Yang Division smiled slightly and said, “Since the Immortal said this, I naturally believe that as long as we do not disrupt the order of the Yin and Yang realms, we will never interfere with the Immortal’s actions.”

       Xia Hongshen nodded, “Farewell.”

The Yin and Yang Division said, “Lord Immortal, please take care on your journey.”

Xia Hongshen took Song Jun away. From beginning to end, Song Jun didn’t say a word. He just listened to their conversation silently, but he was not as shocked as he was at first.

Now, he could be sure that Xia Hongshen was indeed not a human being. According to the Lord Magistrate of the Yin and Yang Division, Xia Hongshen was a heavenly immortal. Song Jun glanced at Xia Hongshen secretly and felt that this was probably true. How could a mortal in the world be like this?

When they left, no one escorted them out. However, since it was a place filled with immortals and supernatural beings, Song Jun thought that there must be someone secretly observing them. Therefore, he didn’t dare to move around recklessly.

When walking out of the side hall, Song Jun suddenly heard the sound of a bell ringing in the temple. He raised his head and looked in the direction of the sound and found that behind the back hall, there was a pagoda towering into the clouds.

       Song Jun stopped unconsciously.

Xia Hongshen beside him also stopped, followed his gaze towards the pagoda, and suddenly said, “That is the Soul Suppressing Pagoda of the City God’s Temple.”

“Soul Suppressing Pagoda?” Song Jun muttered and repeated.

Xia Hongshen said, “The Soul Suppressing Pagoda can suppress all kinds of ghosts. Once thrown into the tower, they cannot come out. Heibai Wuchang3Heibai Wuchang: two deities, one dressed in black and the other in white, responsible for escorting the spirits of the dead to the underworld retrieve souls from the mortal realm. Those meant for reincarnation go to the underworld, and those destined for hell are taken to the eighteen layers of hell. The remaining ones are confined in this tower, never to see the light of day.”

Song Jun was stunned and asked, “They can’t transcend?”

Xia Hongshen shook his head, “Saving the souls of the dead has always been the responsibility of humans, not the underworld.”

When Song Jun heard this, he felt a little emotional for a moment.

He used to think that there were no ghosts in this world, that when people died, their souls were destroyed, and everything returned to nothingness. But now his state of mind had undergone earth-shaking changes. Setting aside the harm caused by malevolent spirits, after meeting his grandma, Song Jun discovered the souls of the departed were still there. This realisation holds significant meaning for the living. He knew that his grandma was still there. She had been doing good things throughout her life, but she died. At this time, she was probably preparing to be reincarnated in the underworld. Song Jun hoped that in the next life, she would be born into a wealthy and happy family, experiencing a life of prosperity. Such thoughts allowed him to cope with the grief of his grandma’s passing. He felt that he might be able to see his reincarnated grandma again one day. Even if they didn’t recognise each other, knowing that she was happy would be enough.

Song Jun was a kind-hearted person by nature. People always said that society was complicated and people were indifferent. He believed that there was nothing wrong with protecting oneself wisely. While others might choose not to do good, he urged them not to mock those who still had a compassionate heart. Otherwise, in the future, there might truly be nothing left but indifference.

Xia Hongshen put his arm around Song Jun’s shoulders and said, “Let’s go.”

Song Jun nodded and was about to turn around and leave when he suddenly felt a palpitation in his heart. The reaction was so strong that he even fell to his knees in an instant.

       Xia Hongshen grabbed him.

Song Jun stretched out his hand to hold his chest. He almost thought he was having a heart attack, and his heart was beating faster and faster.

       Xia Hongshen asked, “What?”

He shook his head and looked at the Soul-Suppressing Pagoda again. He always felt as if something was holding him back. He felt empty and uneasy in his heart.

Xia Hongshen asked again, “Is everything alright?”

Song Jun slowed down his heart palpitations, and Xia Hongshen helped him stand up. “It’s okay,” he said, “Let’s go.”

Xia Hongshen held his hand and took a look at the Soul Suppressing Pagoda. He didn’t notice anything strange, so he said, “Let’s go.”

After leaving the City God Temple, they boarded the awning boat by the river.

While the boatman was rowing, Song Jun and Xia Hongshen stood on the side of the boat, looking at the reflections of street lights on both sides of the river.

Song Jun originally had a question he wanted to ask, but upon seeing the boatman behind them, he hesitated and chose not to voice it. He waited until the two of them landed on the shore, and suddenly, the lively scene around them reverted to the bustling atmosphere they had initially encountered. Song Jun turned around to look, only to find no trace of the City God Temple on the opposite bank of the river. Instead, all he could see were tall and imposing modern buildings.

The two of them walked towards the school, and Song Jun finally asked, “Are you a heavenly deity coming to earth to find something?”

This was the only thing Song Jun heard from the content of their conversation.

Xia Hongshen answered seemingly indifferently, saying, “Yeah.”

Song Jun asked quickly, “What kind of deity are you?”

Xia Hongshen glanced at him and said casually, “The Jade Emperor.”

Song Jun was stunned and soon realised that Xia Hongshen was just talking nonsense, and suddenly felt a little sullen. He originally had many questions to ask, but when he realised that Xia Hongshen probably wouldn’t answer him directly, he lost interest for a while.

But after a while, Song Jun couldn’t help but ask, “Have you found your stuff? Is it Feng Junyuan?”

Xia Hongshen said to him this time, “Not entirely.”

“Thousand-Years Lamp?” Song Jun asked again tentatively. This was what he had heard the man in the City God Temple say before, even though he had no idea what the Thousand-Years Lamp was.

Xia Hongshen stopped and looked at him, “You’ll know eventually.”

Song Jun didn’t understand why he would know or whether it was because the time hadn’t come yet and Xia Hongshen would tell him one day. But looking at Xia Hongshen’s current attitude, he felt that it was unnecessary for him to ask further.

However, he wasn’t entirely happy, and he said, “Then what did you mean when you took me there tonight?”

Xia Hongshen said to him, “Take you for a walk.”

Song Jun fell silent for a moment. He had taken him for a walk, and it unexpectedly led them to the underworld.

Xia Hongshen reached out and touched the top of his head, “Don’t be upset.”

Song Jun looked up and saw Xia Hongshen saying such comforting words in his usual indifferent voice without expression, and suddenly felt that he had no reason to continue to be upset.

Forget it, he smiled and said, “Senior brother, let’s go back.”

Xia Hongshen nodded, “Want to eat something?”

Song Jun said quickly, “No dried small fish!”

       “…oh.”

Chapter 17 – City God Temple

Song Jun had been in a bad mood all night until just before he went to bed when the little black cat suddenly barged in.

Song Jun had never seen this little black cat since he saw the cat at his grandma’s place at that time. He almost thought that this black cat wandered outside and got lost and never could come back to campus, but he didn’t expect that tonight he would actually see the cat again.

The cat food Song Jun bought for it was still in the room. Now he put it in a small bowl and put it in front of the little black cat.

The black cat lowered its head and licked the cat food. It seemed to like this taste of cat food much more than ham sausage or the like.

Song Jun was not in a good mood. After watching the cat finish the cat food, he thought it was almost time for him to leave.

But he didn’t know what happened today. After the little black cat finished eating the cat food, he lay down and licked his paws but had no intention of leaving.

It was already Song Jun’s usual time to go to bed. He thought that the window was open anyway, and the little cat could leave whenever it wanted, so he pointed the fan at the small bed and planned to go to bed.

However, he didn’t expect that the little black cat would move very quickly and suddenly wanted to run towards his bed.

Song Jun quickly reached out and grabbed it, lifted it up, and said in shock, “You can’t go up.”

After all, this little cat was a stray cat. Although it looked clean and had smooth fur, Song Jun didn’t dare to let it jump on his bed. What if the cat got fleas?

The little black cat was held by the back of his neck, turned its head, and ‘meowed’ in his face.

Song Jun suddenly felt a little soft-hearted. He put the little black cat on the ground. Before he could say no, the cat ran towards his bed again.

The cat was caught again, and Song Jun was forced and couldn’t do anything. He couldn’t bear to throw it out of the window. After hesitating, Song Jun decided to give it a bath.

Having made up his mind, Song Jun carried the black cat in one hand and the kettle in the other and headed towards the water room.

Even though it was summer, Song Jun still thoughtfully turned the water into warm water before throwing the little black cat into the basin.

The little black cat was thrown into the water basin and immediately wanted to climb out. Song Jun grabbed it and pushed it down.

The black cat, whose fur was soaked by water, looked smaller. Its eyes were round and bright, making it look a little pitiful. But Song Jun couldn’t help but laugh. He poured water on the little black cat’s head and watched it shake its head vigorously to shake the water. He found it very interesting. The bad mood of the night finally became a little better.

Song Jun gave the little black cat a bath with his own shampoo, and Song Jun used a towel to dry it.

The weather was hot in summer. After wiping the cat with a towel, the fur of the little black cat was half dry. Song Jun thought of the mat on his bed, so when he saw it jumping on the bed again, he ignored it.

When he was sleeping, the little black cat came close to Song Jun.

At first, Song Jun was sleeping on his side, so the cat put its head on Song Jun’s arm. Later, when Song Jun turned over and lay flat, he simply lay on Song Jun’s chest.

Song Jun felt that he couldn’t breathe easily under the weight of the cat, so he stretched out his hand to lift it from his chest.

After that, Song Jun felt it circling around him as if trying to find a comfortable position. The little black cat’s tail brushed against Song Jun’s belly from time to time. Song Jun was so disturbed that he couldn’t sleep, so he stretched out his arms to hug the cat to his side.

The little black cat seemed to finally feel comfortable, resting his chin on Song Jun’s arm and stopped moving.

Song Jun fell asleep without realising it.

However, the little cat lying next to him never closed its eyes, staring at his sleeping face in the darkness.

He slept until dawn, and when Song Jun woke up, the little black cat was gone. He was used to the kitten coming and going freely, so he didn’t pay much attention to it.

But when he opened the door in the morning and saw Xia Hongshen’s closed door opposite, he still felt a little uncomfortable.

Regardless of whether Xia Hongshen was a human or a demon, Song Jun dared to say that he was not afraid. What he cared about was probably Xia Hongshen’s attitude. He couldn’t say what was wrong with him, but he was very troubled. He felt very troubled when he thought about Xia Hongshen.

So, for several days, Song Jun deliberately avoided Xia Hongshen.

When he went out, he would open the door a crack and check to make sure the door on the other side was closed before going out. As long as he was in the dormitory, he would try to reduce the number of times he went out to avoid meeting Xia Hongshen.

After almost a week, one night, when Song Jun went out, Xia Hongshen’s door was still closed, but as soon as he walked out, Xia Hongshen opened the door and stood at the door looking at him.

“Senior Brother Xia,” Song Jun couldn’t help but feel nervous when he saw Xia Hongsheng, even though he hadn’t done anything wrong.

Xia Hongshen asked him, “Where are you going?”

Song Jun said in a low voice, “I’m going to go to the lab to surf the net for a while.” The lab had air conditioning and was cooler than the dormitory.

       Xia Hongshen said, “Don’t go.”

His words were so plain and direct, and Song Jun suddenly felt an unknown fire in his heart. Just when he was about to yell, “Why?” he heard Xia Hongshen say again, “Follow me to a place.”

“Huh?” Song Jun’s anger suddenly flew to the sky, “Where to?”

Xia Hongshen said, “Come with me.”

Song Jun followed Xia Hongshen out of the dormitory and walked into the school. Song Jun suddenly had an idea that they were like dating.

In the hot summer, on the noisy campus, he walked slowly with Xia Hongshen. Although they didn’t talk, his mood gradually became better.

Xia Hongshen never told Song Jun where they were going until they all walked out of the school gate and walked towards the river outside the north gate of the school.

Song Jun thought that Xia Hongshen probably just wanted to take a walk with him.

The riverside that night didn’t seem to be any different from that day in the Ghost Festival. In fact, every day in summer, there were many people walking by the riverside in the evening, especially the elderly and children.

It was already dark when they arrived, but the number of people walking had not decreased.

Xia Hongshen walked neither fast nor slowly. When he reached the river, he took Song Jun into the path along the river. The path was covered with willow trees, and Song Jun had to reach out from time to time to brush away the weeping willows blocking the road ahead.

After walking for a while, there were steps next to the path that led down to the river.

At this moment, Song Jun noticed an awning boat parked on the river bank.

He was stunned for a moment. This river ran through the entire city, and it was located in the city centre. Except for the occasional engineering boat for salvage operations, there were no other boats, and there were no boats for sightseeing.

This awning boat was small and looked very old. It didn’t look like a boat that should appear here.

Song Jun subconsciously looked back and saw many people walking along the riverside path, but no one seemed to notice that there was an extra boat there.

At this time, Xia Hongshen had already walked to the river. He leaned down slightly and knocked on the roof of the boat.

Then, he saw a head peeking out from under the canopy of the boat. The man raised his wrinkled face and looked at them. Then he raised his hand and motioned for them to get on the boat.

Xia Hongshen got on the boat first and extended a hand to Song Jun.

Song Jun hesitated for a moment, then took Xia Hongshen’s hand and jumped on the boat.

The boatman got out of the canopy, sat behind the boat and started paddling.

Song Jun grabbed Xia Hongshen’s arm, and Xia Hongshen supported him and said, “Be careful.”

Song Jun hummed and didn’t let go of Xia Hongshen’s hand.

The boat went downstream, not too fast.

Song Jun asked Xia Hongshen where they were going, but Xia Hongshen only said that he would know when they arrived.

After a while, Song Jun saw a thick layer of mist on the river in front of him. The boat paddled into the mist, and the surrounding scenery suddenly became blurred. Only the lights on the distant shore were still bright.

However, not long after, the boat rowed out of the fog, and as Song Jun’s vision cleared, he looked up and saw, to his surprise, a majestic and magnificent temple standing on the right bank in the distance, resplendent in gold and jade.

If Song Jun remembered correctly, that place should have been the main square in the city centre.

Song Jun looked confused. He just thought that this temple probably did not exist in the world or that it had always been standing there, but no one could see it.

The boat swayed close to the right side of the river and docked.

After Xia Hongshen got off the boat, he pulled Song Jun off the boat and then walked in front along a path onto the river embankment. In front of the river embankment was the square in front of the big temple, with an incense burner in the middle. The cauldron had incense candles burning inside.

Song Jun heard the long bells ringing from the temple, and the surroundings were filled with the smell of burning incense. He raised his head and saw a plaque hanging on the temple door with the words ‘City God Temple’ written on it.

He turned around in shock and saw the large temple next to the river. The entire square was empty, with no one in it.

Also, how could there be anyone here? Song Jun had been living in this city since he entered university, and for several years, he had never known that there was such a well-preserved City God Temple in this place. This temple probably truly existed in another realm.

The temple door opened, with a fierce statue of a deity on each side.

When they walked to the temple gate, Song Jun saw the two statues suddenly turned into human forms, holding a spear in the hand and blocking them at the door, shouting, “Who are you?”

Song Jun stopped and looked at Xia Hongshen. Xia Hongshen raised his hand, took out a piece of paper from somewhere and handed it to the guard.

Song Jun didn’t know what was written on the paper, but after reading it, the gatekeeper’s expression obviously softened. He said to Xia Hongshen, “The City God is not currently in the temple; in charge is the official of the Yin and Yang Division.”

Xia Hongshen said, “May I please see the one in charge?”

The two guards looked at each other, and one of them said, “Please follow me.”

Chapter 16 – Gilded Phoenix Wings

“I will take care of disciplining them when they make mistakes, no need to bother the City God,” Xia Hongshen said, slowly taking two steps in their direction.

The next moment, Song Jun saw him standing in front of him and Feng Junyuan, but Song Jun didn’t even see how he moved.

When Night Patrol God saw Xia Hongshen, he became even more angry. He pointed the long blade at Xia Hongshen and said, “What Immortal Lord? You’re just a mere demonic beast! Don’t think we are really afraid of you!”

Song Jun was stunned when he heard Night Patrol God’s words.

Xia Hongshen’s expression remained unchanged, but he said coldly, “Then what do you want?”

The Night Patrol God pointed at Feng Junyuan and Song Jun and said, “Today is the day that the Ghost Gate is opened, and these two boys are here to disrupt the order of Yin and Yang. I will take them to the City God to hold them accountable. Do you dare to stop?”

Xia Hongshen said, “I am going to stop it.”

Night Patrol God’s expression changed, and without saying a word, he swung his long blade and struck down towards Xia Hongshen, shouting, “Let’s see if you can stop my blade first!”

Xia Hongshen raised his hand. Song Jun and Feng Junyuan were immediately pushed away by a gentle wind. All of a sudden, Xia Hongshen’s figure swayed slightly, and he had already dodged the blade of Night Patrol God. With a flick of his slender fingertips, a deep and gentle spiritual power knocked the Night Patrol God’s blade away.

Song Jun was a little dumbfounded. He didn’t know how things could develop to this point. Even though he had seen many demons and ghosts before, he had never seen such a battle before.

The guy who wielded the long blade didn’t say anything, but Song Jun listened to his words and guessed that he might be a ghost messenger; but what exactly was Senior Brother Xia?

Immortal Lord? Demons? Song Jun felt that he couldn’t understand it.

However, Song Jun immediately became worried about Xia Hongshen. No matter whether Xia Hongshen was a human or a demon, Song Jun would always be on his side. Now, the opponent had a long sword in his hand, while all Xia Hongshen had was empty hands. Although it seemed that he was not at a disadvantage, Song Jun was always frightened every time the Night Patrol God’s long blade swung, bringing up gusts of wind.

When Song Jun couldn’t contain his worry and took two steps forward, Feng Junyuan already jumped forward and wanted to rush over.

Song Jun was shocked and stretched out his hand to stop Feng Junyuan, “Hey!”

However, Feng Junyuan sensed the Yin energy coming from the Night Patrol God’s long blade and involuntarily took a few steps back. He looked somewhat anxious, and yet he couldn’t quite articulate why. He just felt that he couldn’t stand by and watch the two of them fight.

When Feng Junyuan stepped forward again, he was forced back by the Yin energy of the Night Patrol God, and he looked a little frustrated.

Unexpectedly, Xia Hongshen suddenly escaped from the fight with Night Patrol God. He stopped next to Feng Junyuan, stretched out a hand to Feng Junyuan and said, “Come here.”

Feng Junyuan was momentarily stunned as if guided by some unseen force, he reached out and clasped Xia Hongshen’s hand.

Song Jun didn’t have time to be surprised. The next moment, he saw a golden light appear on Feng Junyuan’s body. Even Feng Junyuan himself looked down at his body in surprise as the golden light turned into a long weapon in Xia Hongshen’s hands.

The long weapon was shaped like a long fork, with a sharp blade in the middle and crescent-shaped curved edges on both sides, with golden light flowing.

Song Jun didn’t recognise the name of this weapon, but the Night Patrol God who fought with Xia Hongshen did. He paused slightly and stared at the weapon in Xia Hongshen’s hand, saying, “Gilded Phoenix Wings?”

Xia Hongshen didn’t say anything. He held the sharp weapon in his hand and stabbed Night Patrol God in the face.

The Night Patrol God blocked with his long knife, only to feel a tingling numbness in both hands, instantly recalling the rumours he had heard from Bai Wuchang about the person in front of him. The Night Patrol God was originally a fierce deity, and he would definitely not be afraid of any ancient ferocious beast. However, as they clashed in combat at this moment, he suddenly felt that the person before him did indeed possess a certain frightening quality.

Little did he know Xia Hongshen had not even transformed into his true form but still retained a considerable amount of strength.

The two long weapons collided fiercely, with constant clanking sounds. The Night Patrol God was the god of the underworld, and the seventh month was the yin moon, where the yin energy was at its peak. All of a sudden, the nether winds are very strong.

The two long weapons clashed fiercely, the resounding clangs echoing incessantly. The Night Wandering God, being a deity from the underworld, coupled with the fact that it was the seventh month, associated with the peak of yin energy. All of a sudden chilling Yin wind suddenly swept through.

Song Jun was almost unable to stand due to the strong wind and almost fell to the ground.

Suddenly, he felt a gentle force wrap around him, and a golden halo suddenly appeared around him. It was not a surprised that Xia Hongshen would use his spiritual power to protect him while fighting the Night Patrol God.

Song Jun’s eyes fell on Xia Hongshen.

He was seen waving the Gilded Phoenix Wings; his posture was carefree and unrestrained, and his expression was calm and indifferent, but the person who was fighting with him gradually showed signs of decline and began to retreat slowly.

The Night Patrol God could hardly withstand Xia Hongshen’s attack.

The Gilded Phoenix Wings was worthy of being a divine weapon known as the Immortal Sword. The peak of its spiritual power was far beyond what the Yin energy of the long blade in the Night Patrol God’s hand could compete with. Perhaps others couldn’t see it, but Night Patrol God could clearly feel that Xia Hongshen was able to handle things with ease.

He saw Xia Hongshen’s slender fingers twirl the Gilded Phoenix Wing’s long handle effortlessly, swinging it in a circle easily and slashing towards the top of his head. Instinctively, he raised his long knife to block, but in that instant, he felt regret, fearing that the long knife might be powerless against the spiritual energy of the Gilded Phoenix Wing weapon.

However, the imagined attack did not land on top of his head. At the last moment, Xia Hongshen gently pushed the long handle with his finger, and the Gilded Phoenix Wings flew away from the Night Patrol God.

Knowing that the other party was showing mercy, Night Patrol God felt a surge of anger in his chest. He wanted to yell to tell Xia Hongshen not to look down on him, but at the last moment, he chose to be patient. He escaped from the battle, pointed at Xia Hongshen and said, “Monster, please don’t be arrogant! The two realms of Yin and Yang have strict order, so we won’t allow you to act recklessly! Sooner or later, we will end our relationship with you after what happened today!”

Xia Hongshen stood still and responded calmly, “I’ll be waiting for you.”

Immediately, the Night Patrol God disappeared from the street with a big blade on his shoulder.

Only Song Jun and Xia Hongshen were left, as well as the long soldiers in Xia Hongshen’s hands.

However, Song Jun only saw Xia Hongshen’s weapon transforming into the appearance of Feng Junyuan. He stood there in a daze for a moment, then, with a mix of annoyance and anger, he glared at Xia Hongshen and turned to run away.

Xia Hongshen showed no intention of stopping him but instead said to Song Jun, “Are you okay?”

Song Jun was in a complicated mood at the moment and couldn’t say a word for a moment. He felt that if there was a tree next to him, he should hold on to the tree and say, “Let me slow down.”

It was a pity that there was no tree, and he was too embarrassed to hold Xia Hongshen in front of him. The words ‘Are you a human or a monster?’ lingered on his lips, but he didn’t ask.

Suddenly, Song Jun heard the sound of cicadas chirping on the tree next to him. It was so quiet just now that it was not like a human world. Now, somehow, the lively scene has returned. There were old people squatting by the side of the road to burn paper money, middle-aged people taking a walk, and small children running, jumping, and playing.

The fog on the river had dispersed, and the big red lantern had disappeared.

In an instant, Song Jun felt like he was back in the original world.

He turned his head blankly and saw Zhou Yingchun and the group not far ahead.

A senior sister turned around and saw him, and waved to him.

Song Jun was a little dazed at that time. He replied, “Oh,” and then showed Xia Hongshen the cup he had been holding in his hand and said, “I will return the cup to Professor Zhou.”

       Xia Hongshen said, “Go ahead.”

Song Jun then chased in the direction of the group of people. Returning the cup to Zhou Yingchun, everyone continued to talk and walk towards the school. Song Jun turned around and found that Xia Hongshen had disappeared.

In that moment just now, it was as if time and space had frozen. Once Song Jun broke free from that place, there were no traces left of what had transpired.

However, Song Jun had witnessed everything about Xia Hongshen and Feng Junyuan with his own eyes. His mind was a jumble of confusion. It wasn’t until he returned to the dormitory at night and was quiet that he could carefully contemplate all these events.

Xia Hongshen was probably not a human being, at least not an ordinary person; maybe neither was Feng Junyuan. But Song Jun didn’t feel scared. He just felt a little confused. Since he came to this university to study, he had encountered many strange things that he had never encountered before, and he didn’t understand what happened. And now, even his close and trusted senior brother seemed to be no ordinary human being. Having received education about materialism1Philosophical Materialism states that everything that truly exists is matter; everything is material, thus all phenomena we see are a result of material interactions since childhood, his cognition had been subverted overnight, which was really hard for him to accept.

After struggling alone in the room for half an hour, Song Jun opened the door and walked to the opposite side, knocking on Xia Hongshen’s door.

The door opened quickly. Xia Hongshen was standing in front of the door wearing a dark T-shirt, cotton trousers, and a pair of slippers as he looked at Song Jun.

Song Jun glanced at him and suddenly became nervous, and then he heard Xia Hongshen ask him, “Do you want to eat small fish?”

Song Jun didn’t know what happened, but he sat in Xia Hongshen’s room again and ate dried fish. He didn’t like eating dried fish at all, and he was not a cat.

Xia Hongshen was sitting on a chair with one leg raised. Song Jun’s eyes were unconsciously attracted to his bare feet wearing slippers. Even Xia Hongshen’s feet were beautiful in shape and fair in complexion, and his toenails were round and smooth, just like him. It was perfect, flawless.

Seemingly noticing that Song Jun was staring at his feet, Xia Hongshen raised them up to show him and asked him, “Does it taste good?”

When Song Jun was asked, he remembered the purpose of his coming here. He put the dried fish aside and asked, “Senior Brother, are you a human?”

       Xia Hongshen did not answer.

Song Jun asked tentatively, “Are you a demon?”

       Xia Hongshen still didn’t answer.

Song Jun suddenly felt a little discouraged. He was not the kind of person who was used to being aggressive. On the contrary, he was actually a bit meek in character. He didn’t like to force others, and he didn’t like to fight for anything. He asked Xia Hongshen two questions in succession but did not get an answer from him. He suddenly lost the confidence to continue asking.

When he thought of Xia Hongshen holding Feng Junyuan’s hand and Feng Junyuan transforming into Xia Hongshen’s weapon, Song Jun felt even more uncomfortable. He stood up and said, “I’m going back first.”

Xia Hongshen didn’t ask to stay with him.

When Song Jun went out, he said angrily, “The dried fish is not delicious at all!” Then he closed the door of Xia Hongshen’s room.

Chapter 15 – Hundred Ghosts Parade

After he hurriedly took a shower and changed into a set of clean clothes, Song Jun didn’t forget to greet Xia Hongshen before leaving the dormitory.

“En.” Xia Hongshen stood at the door of the room with an indifferent attitude.

Song Jun scratched his hair and said, “Then I’ll leave first.”

In fact, Song Jun was always a little troubled when he thought of Xia Hongshen. He felt that Xia Hongshen’s attitude towards him was a bit erratic. Sometimes he felt that Xia Hongshen was very good to him, but sometimes, he felt that Xia Hongshen was quite cold to him and that there was no difference between treating him and other people.

As he thought about this, Song Jun reached into his pocket and touched the crystal leaf hanging on his mobile phone. It was given to him by Xia Hongshen. He didn’t know if he was imagining things or not, but he always felt that Xia Hongshen wouldn’t give any small gifts to other juniors casually.

Just when Song Jun touched the leaf, Xia Hongshen felt a flash of light from another leaf in the room.

He also sealed some spiritual energy in the leaf, and it was made into a small mobile phone chain and lay in the drawer of the desk. Xia Hongshen took it out, held it with his fingers and shook it slightly, thinking that although this thing was a treasure from the immortal realm, it still paled in comparison to his own possessions.

Song Jun rushed to the teaching and research office and everyone was getting ready to leave.

This was the most crowded time since Song Jun reported to this school. There was a girl who had just come from home. When she saw Song Jun, she introduced herself again.

The head of the faculty was a middle-aged man with a very kind personality. He said that he had booked a place to eat and that it was near the school, so everyone could just walk there together.

There were so many people that Song Jun was inevitably a little cautious, and there were more girls than boys in the teaching and research section. He was even more embarrassed to join the crowd of girls, so he walked silently at the end alone.

During dinner, he inevitably drank a little wine.

Song Jun was Zhou Yingchun’s only student at the moment. The others were accompanied by their seniors, but he was alone. Zhou Yingchun clearly had high expectations of him, instructing him to present a toast to several teachers in the academic research office, leaving no one out.

Thanks to the teacher and all the senior brothers and sisters, in the end, Song Jun couldn’t bear it anymore.

After dinner, a group of people took a walk back to school. Because everyone had eaten a lot, someone suggested taking a walk along the river outside the campus, and everyone readily agreed.

This river was a large river that runs through the city centre, not far from the school. Across the road from the river was the campus wall. In summer, when the river water rose, a cool breeze would naturally blow when they walked along the river, which was perfect for evening walks.

Unfortunately, Song Jun didn’t go far when he was called over by Zhou Yingchun. Zhou Yingchun said that she had forgotten her cup at the restaurant and asked Song Jun to run over and get it for her.

Of course, Song Jun didn’t refuse. He nodded and returned to the restaurant alone. He found the waiter who had cleared the table and helped Zhou Yingchun find her cup.

When he came out of the restaurant again, it was completely dark.

Song Jun still walked along the road by the river, trying to catch up with Zhou Yingchun and the group. However, halfway through, Song Jun saw someone burning paper money by the river.

Suddenly Song Jun remembered that today was the 15th of the 7th month.

The legendary Ghost Festival, the day when the gate of hell opened. It was also the day when Song Jun was picked up by his grandmother and made it his birthday.

Today, Song Jun turned twenty-two years old.

He was in a daze, and when he suddenly came to his senses, he found that he was still holding Zhou Yingchun’s cup in his hand, so he chased ahead but still didn’t see the group of people in the teaching and research department.

Song Jun stood on the roadside, panting slightly. He looked around and suddenly realised that not only was there no trace of his teacher or classmates on the road but there was no trace of anyone else at all.

A gust of cool wind blew over, and his clothes were blown tightly to the body. Ashes from a pile of burning money and paper not far away flew up and scattered all over the sky. However, the old woman who burned the money and paper had disappeared.

The surroundings were very quiet, and the only sound that could be heard was the rustling of leaves in the wind.

Song Jun stood by the road in a daze and suddenly noticed a dark red light shining on the dark river. He looked up and saw a thick layer of fog rising from the river. In the thick fog, there were two big red lanterns were hung in the sky. Through the light of the lanterns, many pedestrians were vaguely visible on the river, walking forward.

       It was like a mirage.

Song Jun subconsciously took a few steps back and felt someone grabbing his ankle.

He lowered his head and saw the pale face of a child looking up at him. Seeing that he saw him, the child let go of Song Jun’s hand and ran away quickly.

Only then did Song Jun realise that many people had appeared in the originally empty streets. However, most of these people had indifferent expressions and were walking aimlessly. There were also many people gathered around piles of burning money and paper, wanting to grab something.

And there was no trace of shadows in any of these people.

In the middle of the 7th month, the gate of ghosts opened and hundreds of ghosts roamed.

Song Jun’s face turned a little pale. He didn’t know if these people could see him, and he didn’t know whether it would be safer for him to run away from here or stay quietly.

At this moment, Song Jun saw a strange person appearing among the ghosts. He was also a young man, and Song Jun knew him. That person was Feng Junyuan.

Feng Junyuan walked along this road while looking left and right.

Song Jun didn’t know if he could see these things at first until he saw Feng Junyuan’s eyes falling on a woman by the road.

The woman was wearing a winter down jacket, and if it weren’t for her well-proportioned figure, Song Jun might not have dared to confirm that she was a woman because she had no head.

She had been groping around carefully as if she wanted to find her head, but unfortunately, there was no woman’s head nearby.

When he saw Feng Junyuan looking at the woman, Song Jun was sure that he could see these things.

Feng Junyuan’s expression did not show fear or panic. He just looked at these people silently, and then suddenly pulled out a short sword from his waist.

The short sword was made of tortoiseshell and had the ability to exorcise evil spirits and ghosts, but Song Jun didn’t know it at first. He just saw Feng Junyuan suddenly raise the small sword and stab a man passing by.

The man let out a scream of terror. There was no blood where the sword stabbed him, but his body became transparent and weak, and then turned into a mist and floated towards the centre of the river.

All the ghosts on the road were startled by the scream, and everyone looked in this direction, including the female ghost whose head was not found.

The wind stopped at some point, and Song Jun felt that the whole street was so quiet that he could hear his rapid breathing.

Although the commotion just now was caused by Feng Junyuan, as a fellow human being, Song Jun was obviously isolated by the group of ghosts together with Feng Junyuan.

Feng Junyuan also noticed Song Jun’s presence at this time. He glanced at Song Jun and said nothing. He raised the small tortoiseshell sword in his hand and stabbed the middle-aged female ghost next to him again.

The whole street suddenly became chaotic. Song Jun’s ears were filled with all kinds of terrible screams. Some people were howling and others were running. He saw a middle-aged man running with a split stomach. When he got there, his intestines leaked all over the floor, so he went to pick it up again.

Song Jun felt like he was in a hell execution ground, surrounded by chaotic and terrifying scenes.

But Feng Junyuan, who caused the commotion, obviously had no intention of giving up. Song Jun saw him reaching out and grabbing the kid who grabbed his feet just now. The kid was twitching and his face had turned blue.

Song Jun ran over and hugged Feng Junyuan, and the kid took the opportunity to slip away from Feng Junyuan’s hands.

Feng Junyuan wanted to push Song Jun away, “What are you doing?”

“What are you doing?” Song Jun was simply confused. He couldn’t care less about being afraid and hugged Feng Junyuan tightly and wouldn’t let go.

Feng Junyuan said, “None of your business!”

Song Jun was not as strong as him, so he gritted his teeth, raised his knee to bump him, and then said, “Are you crazy?”

He didn’t understand why Feng Junyuan would do such things. Although he knew that they were all ghosts, even as ghosts, he could tell that they were not malicious spirits. Life was predetermined, perhaps only lasting a few decades. There were those who, like children lost their lives before they became an adult. Even the souls that had lost their physical bodies still had emotions. They came from the underworld, and many of them were just attached to the mortal world, wanting to see their loved ones or partners. They were not inherently evil, perhaps even incapable of doing harm. Otherwise, why would they allow Feng Junyuan to slaughter them without resistance?

Song Jun was also afraid and didn’t want to see ghosts, but he didn’t hate them without reason.

Just like his grandma, she waited so hard in that house just to hand over the little inheritance she had worked so hard to save to Song Jun.

So no matter what, Song Jun did not want to see Feng Junyuan hurt these ghosts so recklessly.

Just as the two were struggling, they suddenly heard a loud shout from the air, “Who is it?!”

Song Jun and Feng Junyuan stopped arguing and looked at the man who appeared out of thin air in front of them. The man had small cheeks, bare shoulders, a black robe and long boots. He was none other than Night Patrol God under the City God.

The Night Patrol God noticed the strange phenomenon nearby and hurried over. When he saw the small tortoiseshell sword in Feng Junyuan’s hand, he was furious, “A hundred ghosts are walking at night today. Who are you? How dare you wildly interfere with the order of the underworld?”

Song Jun was a little stunned. He looked at the man in front of him, wondering what kind of monster he was.

Feng Junyuan, on the other hand, wore a cold expression and remained silent.

The Night Patrol God had always been irritable. He slammed his long knife forcefully into the ground, then flipped it up in front of his chest, shouting, “You ignorant fool! Follow me to confess your sins in front of the City God’s Seat!”

Song Jun let out a muffled scream, and Feng Junyuan was also forced to take two steps back by the Yin energy of the long sword.

Suddenly, Song Jun heard a voice behind him, “I’ll take care of their mistakes; there’s no need to trouble the City God.”

Song Jun and Feng Junyuan turned around at the same time and saw Xia Hongshen standing under the street light, slowly walking to their direction.

Chapter 14 – Long Xing

When Song Jun woke up, it was already bright.

He sat up from the sofa, drifting off for a moment to recall the events of last night, and the first thing he did was to take out his mobile phone to call the police.

Song Jun worked hard to unlock the security door. After leaving the villa, he felt relieved. He didn’t move too far away, waiting for the police to arrive.

It was only after dawn that Song Jun realised that the neighbourhood was a villa area surrounded by single-family villas. However, due to the remote location, no one lived in these villas, and the iron doors were locked tightly.

Not long after, a police car drove in this direction.

Song Jun waved to them, and the police car stopped next to him. The person inside pressed down the window, revealing a baby face with delicate features.

It turned out to be Long Xing, a young policeman whom Song Jun had met once.

Long Xing also remembered Song Jun, and he asked strangely, ”Huh, why are you here? Aren’t you a student at University C?”

Song Jun didn’t have time to explain the reason to him in detail. He hurriedly asked Long Xing and the others to go into the house to take a look. He said that there was a female corpse in the room at the end of the corridor on the first floor, while he himself didn’t dare to go in any further when he reached the door.

After Long Xing and another police officer went in for a while, they quickly came out and called the command centre to request additional manpower. They also called the emergency number.

Song Jun heard them say that there were two people unconscious upstairs.

Only now did Song Jun finally relax. He sat on the doorstep, recalling what happened last night. His memory stopped at how he had fainted after the black monster had broken in and what had happened. How he got downstairs, he had no idea.

Long Xing offered to record a statement for him, and he nodded in agreement.

What happened last night was still very strange to talk about now. Regarding the late-night bus mentioned by Song Jun, Long Xing called the bus company to ask. The other party said that there was indeed a bus due to a breakdown, so the return to the bus terminal was delayed, exactly the one Song Jun mentioned. However, for the specifics, they still needed to go to the bus company to find the driver and obtain evidence.

In addition, when Song Jun said that the woman suddenly changed from her twenties to her fifties, Long Xing bit his pen and looked at him suspiciously.

Song Jun noticed Long Xing’s eyes and was embarrassed to continue talking.

However, Long Xing still wrote down what he said and just said, “Were you too sleepy at that time, so your eyes were blurry?”

Song Jun wanted to say no, but he hesitated and didn’t say anything, so he acquiesced.

Generally speaking, what Song Jun said was consistent with the case scene. This villa was the home of the couple upstairs, and the police also extracted something suspected of human skin gelatin in their kitchen.

After recording the confession, Long Xing said to Song Jun, “I’ll take you back to school.”

Song Jun nodded, “Thank you, officer.”

Long Xing drove Song Jun back to campus in a police car.

On the way, Long Xing asked him, “Are you a student majoring in Forensic Medicine?”

Song Jun responded, “Yeah, but I’m in the field of physical evidence.”

“Oh—” Long Xing dragged his voice and then asked, “Is there any difference?”

Song Jun said, “It is to extract DNA for personal identification…”

When he said this, Long Xing understood.

Long Xing reached out and scratched his head, saying that he went to vocational high school after leaving junior high school. He just started working this year and was still less than twenty years old.

Long Xing looked very young, but Song Jun didn’t expect him to be younger than himself. He had been studying until now, and it seemed natural that the people working were older than him.

Along the way, Song Jun’s emotions slowly calmed down. Although this experience was a little scary when he thought about it, it did not leave much of a psychological trauma compared to what he had encountered before. After all, Tu Zhenzhen was a real person. No matter how cruel and terrifying she was, she had already been caught by the police and would not have the chance to haunt him again.

Long Xing drove the car to the school gate and stopped.

Song Jun said to him, “Thank you, Officer Long.”

Long Xing waved his hand, “You don’t have to be so polite. You were frightened too. Go back and have a good rest.”

Song Jun opened the car door and was about to get out of the car when he saw Xia Hongshen walking out of a small supermarket not far from the school gate.

It was almost noon now, and the sun outside was a bit strong. Song Jun hadn’t had a good rest all night, and he had experienced so many things in the morning. Now, when he saw Xia Hongshen walking out of the supermarket with a bottle of mineral water, he suddenly felt thirsty, and his tongue became dry.

Xia Hongshen also saw Song Jun and the others, and he walked towards them.

“Teacher Xia!” When Long Xing saw Xia Hongshen, he stuck his head out of the car and greeted him enthusiastically.

       Xia Hongshen nodded at him.

Because he had a lot of contact with Xia Hongshen at work, Long Xing opened the car door and got out, walked around to this side of the car and exchanged pleasantries with Xia Hongshen.

Xia Hongshen glanced at Song Jun while listening to him.

Song Jun raised his hand and wiped the sweat from his forehead.

Xia Hongshen then handed over the mineral water in his hand, “Here you go.”

Song Jun was stunned for a moment, took it, and said, “Thank you.”

Long Xing was like an energetic child. He told Xia Hongshen about receiving the call from Song Jun today. Since Xia Hongshen knew the details of the previous face-peeling case, he asked, “Has the criminal been caught?”

Long Xing nodded, “I caught it, thanks to Teacher Song.”

Because he was standing under the noon sun, a layer of sweat soon appeared on Long Xing’s forehead. Xia Hongshen looked at him and suddenly said, “Wait a moment.”

After saying that, Xia Hongshen turned around and went back to the small supermarket. He bought another bottle of mineral water and this time grabbed a box of potato chips.

He handed the mineral water and potato chips to Long Xing.

Long Xing asked strangely, “How do you know I like to eat potato chips?” But he happily accepted it.

Xia Hongshen raised his hand and touched Long Xing’s head.

After making this move, neither Xia Hongshen nor Long Xing seemed to feel anything was wrong, but Song Jun felt strange. He didn’t feel that Xia Hongshen and Long Xing were that close.

Long Xing said he was leaving and said goodbye to them.

Xia Hongshen said, “Be careful on the road.”

Song Jun thanked him again, “Thank you, Officer Long.”

Long Xing got into the car, stretched out his hand and waved, then turned around and left.

Song Jun and Xia Hongshen stood there and watched him drive away.

       Then, Song Jun sighed deeply.

Xia Hongshen turned to look at him.

Song Jun said, “I feel so tired.”

“Go back and rest,” Xia Hongshen said to him.

Song Jun looked at the time. He hadn’t touched the experiment today, and he still had to go to work in the evening, but he suddenly didn’t want to do anything. He was so exhausted that he was afraid that if he tensed up any more, he would break.

Without going to the lab, Song Jun went directly back to the dormitory. After taking a cold shower, he lay on the bed and turned on the fan.

He took out his mobile phone and called the manager of the fast food restaurant where he worked, saying that he would ask for leave today.

In fact, this was his second day at work, and he had to ask for leave. It was hard to explain, but he couldn’t bear it, and his bicycle was stolen. He didn’t know how he was going to get back from work tonight.

The store manager was very unhappy when he heard about his request for leave and did not agree to it.

While Song Jun was talking, fatigue came over him, and he fell asleep holding the phone to his ear. Later, the store manager said that if he didn’t come tonight, he wouldn’t have to come again in the future, but Song Jun didn’t have a chance to hear it.

Lying on the bed with the fan blowing on, Song Jun slept until the phone rang in the afternoon.

He opened his eyes drowsily and found that the phone was still in his hand. The caller ID was his mentor, Zhou Yingchun.

Song Jun suddenly woke up. He answered the phone and tried not to sound like he was waking up, “Professor Zhou?”

Zhou Yingchun didn’t notice that Song Jun slept in the dormitory all afternoon. She called to ask Song Jun to have dinner with her.

“Dinner?” Song Jun was a little surprised.

Zhou Yingchun said, “Yes, all the new students of your class are here. The teaching and research office will organise a dinner together tonight, and we will set off from the Forensic Medicine building later.”

Song Jun said quickly, “Oh, okay.”

After hanging up the phone, Song Jun hurriedly climbed out of bed, wearing only underwear, intending to go to the water room to fetch water and wipe away the sweat accumulated on his body during sleep.

As a result, as soon as he went out, he met Bu Hui and Cheng Ruijing coming back from outside.

When Cheng Ruijing saw Song Jun, she first screamed in surprise, then pointed at Song Jun and shouted, “Little junior brother is running naked!”

Song Jun’s face turned red, and he quickly hid back, only sticking his head out to say hello, “Senior Brother Bu, Senior Sister Cheng.”

Bu Hui said, “What are you doing? Don’t be a hooligan!”

Song Jun was a little depressed, “That’s not it.”

He wanted to wait until Bu Hui and Cheng Ruijing went back to the room before coming out. He was sweaty and didn’t want to put on clean clothes directly.

Unexpectedly, Cheng Ruijing walked towards him and said with a smile, “Hurry up and go naked for Sister to see.”

At this time, the door to Xia Hongshen’s room on the opposite suddenly opened.

No one expected that Xia Hongshen would be here at this time. Cheng Ruijing was startled and leaned against the wall and patted her chest, “Senior Brother Xia, you are going to scare me to death.”

Xia Hongshen looked at her, then looked at Song Jun across from him and asked, “What are you doing?”

Song Jun stuck his head out from the crack in the door and said pitifully, “I want to go to the water room to get some water and wipe my body.”

Xia Hongshen said, “Wait a minute.” Then, he went to the water room to help Song Jun get a basin of water.

Cheng Ruijing was originally just teasing Song Jun, but she gave up when there was no fun to watch. She turned and walked towards Bu Hui’s room and said, “Junior Brother’s figure isn’t good enough. He needs to exercise more.”

Song Jun took the basin and said, “Thank you, Senior Brother Xia.” Then, he hurriedly closed the door.

Chapter 13 – Giant Beast

Although it was probably just a hallucination, it still made Song Jun feel very uneasy. He sat down on the sofa, took the remote control and changed the channels several times but still couldn’t pay attention to it.

Tu Zhenzhen didn’t come down for a long time. Song Jun heard the coughing from upstairs and was too embarrassed to call her. He stood up and walked to the door, reaching out and twisting the door lock.

But the heavy security door lock was very complicated. Song Jun couldn’t unscrew it for a long time. He looked up again and had no choice but to give up for now.

He didn’t know why, but the feeling of panic was becoming more and more clear. He was even more panicked than when he first started to find his way in the darkness outside. Song Jun couldn’t sit down and walked around the first floor, looking for a bathroom.

There was a small door at the end of the corridor on the first floor. Song Jun walked over and reached out to open the door.

The door lock was opened with a slight twist. Song Jun pushed the door open, and the light from the corridor shone in. His vision was a little blurry at first, but after quickly adapting to the darkness, he was shocked to realise that there was someone in the room.

Song Jun first saw a pair of feet, wearing high heels, and then looked up and saw a woman sitting on a chair facing the door. Her limbs were fully clothed, but only one face was covered in blood and flesh. His face was completely peeled off.

Song Jun’s breath caught, and the fear came too suddenly for him to react. The next second, he felt a hand tap on his shoulder.

There had always been a vague fragrance permeating the house. Song Jun thought it was probably a kind of incense, and now the incense was getting stronger and stronger. The moment he was suddenly frightened and then tapped on the shoulder, a string in Song Jun’s mind seemed to snap. He could see, hear and act, but he stopped thinking for a moment.

He turned around and saw Tu Zhenzhen. Tu Zhenzhen waved to him and asked him to come over. He followed Tu Zhenzhen in a daze, no longer knowing that he should be afraid.

Tu Zhenzhen said, “Come on, come up with me.” Then she led Song Jun upstairs, not forgetting to remind him to be careful of the stairs.

Song Jun followed Tu Zhenzhen towards the second floor.

He didn’t know what he was thinking. He could clearly feel himself stepping over the stairs and even saw the pattern of the floor in the corridor on the second floor clearly, but he didn’t know that he should run away.

Tu Zhenzhen took Song Jun into the second room on the left side of the corridor on the second floor. It was a bedroom with a large bed. There was a man lying on the bed. He was already in his forties or fifties and seemed to be in poor health. Well, the whole face was already loose and wrinkled, and maybe he looked older than his actual age.

Tu Zhenzhen held Song Jun’s hand at the door, pulled him to the edge of the bed, pressed his shoulders to make him sit down, and then said to the man, “Husband, do you think this boy is good-looking?”

The man looked at Song Jun and coughed hard before he could speak.

Tu Zhenzhen lowered her face from Song Jun’s head and looked at Song Jun while humming, then she said, “Although he is not perfect, he is still a handsome and beautiful boy. I think he is pretty good. What do you think?”

The man stopped coughing at this time, shook his head, sighed and said, “Not good, change it.”

“Still not good?” Tu Zhenzhen was a little surprised, “I think it’s much better than the last one. Don’t compare yourself to girls. Boys who look too delicate aren’t attractive.”

But the man still shook his head, “I don’t like it.”

Tu Zhenzhen’s face suddenly turned cold. She walked around Song Jun and stood in front of the man, “Hubby, are you dissatisfied with what I did?”

The man didn’t speak, but his expression was obviously gloomy.

Tu Zhenzhen suddenly approached the man and said, “Hubby, look at my face. Is it exactly the same as when I first met you?”

The man’s pupils reflected Tu Zhenzhen’s face. It was indeed a youthful and beautiful face. She didn’t even need makeup; due to her youth, not a single pore was visible, let alone wrinkles.

However, the man slowly turned away his eyes at this moment. His eyes fell on a photo of a man and a woman on the bedside table next to him. There was a man and a woman in the photo. The woman was clearly what Tu Zhenzhen looked like now, and the man had a hearty smile. He was tall and handsome. But if you look closely, the facial features were clearly the same as the man on the bed, but now this man was old, shrivelled, and dying of illness.

Seeing that the man refused to look at her, Tu Zhenzhen got angry. She stood up and ran downstairs in a hurry. After a while, she came up with the makeup mirror in the living room, put it in front of the man and insisted that he look in the mirror, “Look at you! Look at how you look now! What’s wrong with regaining youth, just like me?”

The man was also a little unhappy and said, “Go away!”

Tu Zhenzhen didn’t listen and just said, “Look at what you look like!”

The man raised his hand to push her away, but she insisted on bringing the mirror in front of the man. After a few push and pull, the man began to cough violently.

Tu Zhenzhen stopped immediately. She threw the mirror aside and reached out to gently pat the man’s chest, “Hubby, don’t get worked up. If you don’t want to look, then don’t. Don’t be angry.”

After appeasing her husband, Tu Zhenzhen stood up and walked to Song Jun. She pinched Song Jun’s chin with her hands to make him raise his face. She said, “This is a divine skill bestowed upon me by the heavens. All I need to do is cut off his face, boil it into a potion, drink it, and gradually, you’ll revert to your twenties just like me. It won’t only be your face; your entire body will become like that of a twenty-year-old, just like mine now.”

After saying that, Tu Zhenzhen let go of Song Jun and spun around in a circle, her dress fluttering. She was obviously very satisfied with how she looked now.

“Hubby,” she said, “if this one person is not enough, I will go out and find young and beautiful boys for you until you return to what you look like in the photo, okay?”

“This is not divine skill at all,” the man on the bed closed his eyes and said slowly, “Divine skill will not kill so many people. Look how many people you have killed. This is simply witchcraft, and one day, it will cost you your life.”

“No!” Tu Zhenzhen suddenly raised her voice. She was very angry at her husband’s rebuttal, but then she suppressed her emotions and said, “Hubby, don’t make me angry all the time. Just wait a moment. I’ll soon cut off his face and go to the kitchen to boil it so you’ll be able to drink it tomorrow.”

With that said, Tu Zhenzhen picked up a small knife from the bedside table, walked up to Song Jun, reached out and touched his forehead, intending to peel it off from there.

The man suddenly shouted at the top of his lungs, “Stop!”

Tu Zhenzhen seemed startled, and the knife almost fell from her hand.

Suddenly, a strong wind blew outside the house without warning, and the window glass was blown violently, making a loud noise.

Tu Zhenzhen and her husband both turned their heads and looked outside at the same time.

Only a trace of black mist slowly seeped in from the gap between the two closed windows. When a large piece of black mist rushed in, it gradually condensed and transformed into a huge black beast.

Tu Zhenzhen was startled, held the knife towards the giant beast, and shouted, “What is that!”

The giant beast roared and suddenly rushed towards Tu Zhenzhen, pressing her whole body under its claws.

The man on the bed struggled to get up in fear and fell off the bed. He shouted, “Zhenzhen!” As he tried to come and save his wife.

However, the giant beast suppressed Tu Zhenzhen’s body and bit her neck.

There was no blood splattering as expected. The beast’s fangs bit Tu Zhenzhen’s neck, leaving bloody marks, but they were not too deep. It picked up a black shadow with its sharp fangs, suddenly pulled it out of Tu Zhenzhen’s body, then held it in one mouthful and swallowed it into its belly.

Tu Zhenzhen fainted on the ground. After the black shadow was pulled out of the body, her appearance instantly became older, and even her body became loose and no longer youthful.

The giant beast used its front paws to pull Tu Zhenzhen and slammed her towards her husband, who was rolling to the ground. They both lost consciousness at the same time.

At this time, the dark beast pulled Song Jun with its front paws.

Song Jun looked stunned. He was not unconscious. He saw everything happening in the house with his own eyes. His mind was just frozen.

Song Jun’s body shook slightly after being pulled, but he did not fall down.

The beast now raised its sharp claws and only used the pads of its front paws to slap Song Jun’s face.

Song Jun looked at it in a daze.

Next, the beast slapped him on the head. This time, Song Jun tilted his head and fainted completely.

When Song Jun fell down, the giant beast caught him with its big cat-like body, letting him fall to the ground unharmed, and then gently stepped on his chest with the soft fleshy pads of its soles as if it was having fun.

Then the black shadow fled, and its shape instantly stretched into a slender human figure, appearing in the corridor outside the house.

Wearing a shirt and long jeans, Xia Hongshen walked towards the stairs with bare feet. He went down to the first floor and came to the room at the end of the corridor and reached out to open the door. When he opened the door, a thin layer of mist gathered on his palm, blocking the contact between his palm and the doorknob preventing him from leaving a fingerprint.

Inside the room, the deceased woman was still sitting miserably on the chair. Xia Hongshen did not look at her. He walked to the corner and picked up an incense stick. The incense kept burning, and the faint fragrance spread and could be smelled throughout the first floor.

Xia Hongshen brought the incense to the pen and smelled it, then pinched it out with his fingers. This kind of incense had a strong effect of confusing people’s minds. It could block the transmission of several specific neurons and make people lose their consciousness of resistance when they are awake.

Afterwards, Xia Hongshen returned to the room on the second floor. He picked up the makeup mirror that Tu Zhenzhen had thrown away from the corner. He snorted coldly, and his palms glowed with gleaming light. The entire mirror collapsed in his palms and became a piece the size of a leaf fragments of glass.

He put the fragments back on his body, and Xia Hongshen brushed his palms over the heads of Tu Zhenzhen and her husband, confirming that they would not be able to wake up before dawn. Then he walked over and picked up the unconscious Song Jun, carried him down to the first floor, and placed him on the soft sofa.

Xia Hongshen’s body then turned into black mist and floated out from the window of the room.

Chapter 12 – The Bus

In addition to the driver, there were also a few passengers sitting in the car.

When the driver saw Song Jun hesitating to get on the bus, he looked over and asked, “Do you want to get in?”

Song Jun felt strange and asked the driver, “Sir, why is there still a bus at this time?”

The driver said, “Oh, the bus broke down just now. It took some time to repair it. Isn’t this the last bus again? We have to make sure to drop off all the passengers at the station.”

After Song Jun heard what he said, he didn’t doubt anything anymore and got on the bus.

There were about four or five people in the car, all sitting in the back rows. Song Jun also habitually sat in the empty seat at the back. There was a woman sitting in front of him. Song Jun didn’t pay close attention to her appearance. He felt very tired after working until now, so he closed his eyes.

After all, he was on the bus, so Song Jun didn’t dare to sleep too deeply and kept paying attention to the bus station announcements.

But after a long time, the radio in the but never sounded, and it never stopped.

Song Jun opened his eyes and looked outside, and suddenly found that it was dark outside, and he had no idea where the bus had driven to.

This was not normal because even late at night, the city was brightly lit, and the street lights everywhere were on, so there would definitely not be a situation of total darkness.

Song Jun was confused just now, and he wondered if he had slept through it.

He couldn’t help but turn around and see that there were still those few people on the bus, all sitting in their original positions with indifferent expressions.

Song Jun began to get nervous at this time. He stood up and walked forward, looking out through the large windshield in front of the bus. With the headlights, he could only see that the bus was still on the same path. Driving on the road, but not much more can be seen.

“Sir, Sir!” He called the driver twice.

The driver turned to look at him, “What’s wrong?”

Song Jun asked, “Where is this place? Have you passed South Road Station?”

The driver said coldly, “We haven’t arrived yet. What’s the rush?”

Song Jun didn’t know whether he should believe it or not. He asked again, “Why is it so dark outside?”

The driver was silent for a moment before answering him, “The power is out.”

Song Jun asked, “How long will it take to arrive?”

At this time, the driver turned around and glared at him fiercely. The expression was so ferocious that Song Jun caught his breath, and he dared not ask again.

Song Jun did not return to his seat. He grabbed the armrest and stood in front for a while. This time, he was sure that more than one stop had passed, but the driver had not stopped at all, and the person sitting on the bus had not gotten off at all. Those people were completely unresponsive.

He didn’t dare to wait any longer and shouted, “Stop! Stop! I want to get off!”

Even if it was dark outside, it was better than staying on this eerie bus.

However, after Song Jun shouted loudly, the driver pulled over. The bus came to a stop, and the rear doors opened promptly.

He stood in front of the car door. Song Jun saw the darkness outside, and the bus door was like a monster’s mouth that was about to swallow him in the next second.

Despite his fear, Song Jun got out of the car.

However, Song Jun was not the only one who got off the bus. The woman who was sitting in front of him also got off the bus after him.

The door closed, and the bus continued to drive forward.

Song Jun stood on the side of the road and was stunned for a while. His eyes adjusted to the darkness around him, and he realised that he was not in the city centre at all, but he didn’t know where he was in the wilderness.

The woman stood not far from him and did not move.

Song Jun glanced at her and saw that she lowered her head and kept looking at her toes.

After hesitating for a moment, Song Jun did not speak to the woman but walked in the opposite direction to the bus. The woman actually followed him over.

Song Jun couldn’t help but pay attention to the woman behind him as if he was afraid that she would pounce on him and strangle him in the next second.

However, that didn’t happen. The woman just kept following Song Jun.

Until Song Jun stopped, turned around and asked, “Why are you following me?”

The woman raised her head to look at him. She was a young and beautiful woman, she looked to be in her early twenties, wearing a beautiful and elegant long dress with a small coat outside.

She smiled, simple and gentle, and said to Song Jun, “Are you lost?”

Song Jun looked at the young woman who looked like a rich lady in front of him and felt that she did not look like a monster or a bad person, but he still couldn’t help but be wary and asked, “Who are you?”

The woman waved her hand and said, “Don’t get me wrong, I felt something strange on that bus just now, but I didn’t dare to speak. When I heard you ask to stop, I immediately followed you.”

Although he was still sceptical, Song Jun had to admit that he was slightly relieved after hearing the woman say this.

It was better to know that someone was with him in this unfamiliar environment than to be alone and scared.

“Where are you going?” Song Jun asked, and he began to think that he might be able to send this woman home first.

The woman smiled, with a friendly look on her face, and said, “Actually, I live not far from here. I thought you couldn’t find your way back, so I want you to come to my house first.”

Song Jun suddenly became wary again. He didn’t believe it was such a coincidence. This woman obviously followed him and got off near him, so how could she conveniently live in the vicinity?

The woman seemed to see that Song Jun didn’t believe it, so she didn’t extend the invitation again. She said, “Then I’ll walk with you for a while and see if you can get a taxi.”

Song Jun didn’t know how to answer her, so he continued walking forward silently.

As they walked, the woman introduced herself, “My name is Tu Zhenzhen, and I am a student at University C.”

Song Jun paused for a moment, “You’re also from University C?”

“Huh?” Tu Zhenzhen said in a very excited tone, “Are you too?”

       Song Jun nodded.

Tu Zhenzhen said, “What a coincidence. I am studying fashion design, and I am in my third year of college this year.”

Song Jun stopped and turned around to see Tu Zhenzhen looking at him strangely. He hesitated and said, “Where is your home? I’d better take you back first.”

Tu Zhenzhen smiled when she heard this, tilted her head and said, “No, I see you are very scared, so I’d better see you off. There might be a taxi ahead.”

Song Jun was embarrassed by what she said. He himself was in a daze and a little wary. He also felt that this girl, who was younger than him, should not be a bad person. He thought for a while and felt that it would be better to send Tu Zhenzhen back first.

Song Jun said, “Let me take you back. Didn’t you say it’s not far?”

Tu Zhenzhen said, “Hmm…” He hesitated for a moment and said, “Okay, if you’re not afraid, you can go in and sit for a while and then leave after dawn.”

After saying that, Tu Zhenzhen raised her hand and pointed to a place not far away, “It’s right there.”

Song Jun looked in the direction she pointed and found that there was a two-story villa along the path. The villa was lit up and was the only lit building nearby.

Song Jun followed her in that direction and asked curiously, “Are your parents at home?”

Tu Zhenzhen shook her head, “No.”

After she said this, she said nothing more, so it was not convenient for Song Jun to continue asking.

After accompanying Tu Zhenzhen to the door of her house, Song Jun planned to leave.

Tu Zhenzhen opened the door to the room, and a warm yellow light suddenly shone out from inside, looking very reassuring. Tu Zhenzhen said to Song Jun, “Come in and sit down. Even though you are a guy, it is too dangerous to walk alone at night.”

Perhaps it was because bright light would make people feel at ease. Song Jun saw the bright and comfortable look inside the living room and instantly did not want to go back to the darkness.

Tu Zhenzhen didn’t force him. She just stood by the door and invited him.

       Song Jun hesitated.

Tu Zhenzhen said, “Why don’t you come in and I’ll get you a glass of water, and take a rest.”

Song Jun finally nodded and followed Tu Zhenzhen into the house.

Tu Zhenzhen warmly invited him to sit down on the sofa and turned on the TV for him. Song Jun suddenly felt that this kind of warmth and comfort made him feel safe. Maybe he was thinking too much. He could really stay here. For example, maybe he could sleep on a large and soft sofa and wait until dawn before leaving.

Tu Zhenzhen poured him a cup of tea and asked him if he wanted to call a family member or friend to pick him up.

Song Jun saw that it was already one-thirty in the morning and almost two o’clock in the morning. He shook his head and said no. The only people he could think of now were Senior Brother Xia and Senior Brother Bu. No matter which one, he was embarrassed to make calls at this time to disturb people’s sleep.

At this time, Song Jun heard a man’s voice from upstairs, shouting, “Zhenzhen!”

Song Jun was stunned. The man’s voice did not sound young. He sounded like Tu Zhenzhen’s father, but she had just said that her parents were not at home.

Then, Song Jun heard a rapid cough coming from upstairs.

Tu Zhenzhen quickly said to Song Jun, “Sit down for a moment. I’ll go up and take a look first.” After saying that, she hurried upstairs.

Song Jun picked up the teacup and looked at it, then put it down after a slight hesitation. The presence of a man in the room made him feel a little concerned. He felt that the most basic precautions should be taken.

The decoration and furnishings in the room looked simple and elegant. There were two large blue and white porcelain vases next to the TV cabinet, which looked expensive.

Song Jun stood up and couldn’t help but look around the room, noticing a faint fragrance in the air.

From time to time, the sound of a man coughing and the sound of two people talking in low voices came from the second floor. Song Jun couldn’t hear clearly what they were talking about, and he didn’t have the nerve to get closer to eavesdrop.

There was a small makeup mirror placed on top of the speaker next to the TV cabinet. Song Jun didn’t notice it at first. When he passed by, he suddenly noticed from the corner of his eye that the person in the mirror was not himself but a wrinkled face. old man.

After being stunned for a moment, Song Jun came closer to take a closer look and found that it was still himself that was reflected in the mirror. There was nothing strange about it. The picture he just saw seemed to be just an illusion.

Chapter 11 – Heirloom

Song Jun stared at the photo blankly, and then a sudden fear struck him. He turned around and ran towards his grandma’s room. The door was unlocked and opened with a twist, but there was no one in the room.

The bed was neatly made, and there was no sign that anyone had slept in it for several days. Not only the bed, but the entire room was also neatly tidied, and it looked like no one had lived there.

After coming out of the bedroom, he came to the living room and dining room, which were all just like Grandma’s bedroom. It was deserted and had no trace of life. At first glance, it looked very clean, but if he touched it with your hands, he would find a light layer of dust on the table.

The dishes and chopsticks in the kitchen were still stained with water. Song Jun had washed them and put them in the cupboard in the evening. However, there was no food left in the refrigerator. The power had even been cut off, and it was empty when he opened it.

Song Jun took a few steps back and sat on the sofa, tears streaming down his face without warning.

It turned out that Grandma passed away a few days ago, and her children directly cremated and buried her without anyone notifying Song Jun.

The house had been cleaned up by Grandma’s children. Sooner or later, this house would be sold. Song Jun had very few things left here, and there were basically no important things. There were only some clothes and toys from childhood, which Grandma kept and was reluctant to throw away.

Although Song Jun didn’t know what was going on, he had vaguely guessed something. At this time, he had forgotten his fear and was only left with sadness.

He sat on the sofa and shed tears silently. Song Jun raised his hand to wipe his eyes, stood up and shouted, “Grandma?”

He searched for traces of his grandma in the empty rooms one by one but found nothing. The grandma who had talked to him and cooked for him in the evening had now disappeared.

After searching around but not finding it, Song Jun later walked into Grandma’s room and sat down on Grandma’s bed.

It was sad, but Song Jun didn’t keep shedding tears. He felt empty in his heart, as if many of his original thoughts suddenly became meaningless all at once. He didn’t even know what he was studying alone for.

After sitting in silence for a long time, Song Jun suddenly heard a small movement outside.

“Grandma?” Song Jun stood up suddenly and opened the door.

However, Grandma did not appear. In the middle of the living room stood a little black cat, apparently jumping in from the open window next to it.

Song Jun was stunned because the little black cat was clearly the one who frequented his dormitory on the campus.

The little cat looked towards him, said ‘meow’ and then slowly walked towards him, dragging its tail.

“Why are you here?” Song Jun was surprised, but he still knelt down and touched the little cat’s head.

The little black cat cradled its head in his hand comfortably, then stood up and pawed at Song Jun’s pants.

       Song Jun picked it up.

It was strange, but Song Jun, who was immersed in sadness, had no energy to think much about it.

He held the little cat and sat down on the sofa in the living room. He stroked the little black cat’s head and said in a deep voice, “My grandma is gone.”

Song Jun found a channel to talk. Although he knew that the little cat couldn’t understand anything, he was no longer alone. He could express all his pain.

“I know Grandma is worried about me. She must have stayed here to see me for the last time. After seeing me, she disappeared. I will never see her again.”

“But I still miss her very much. I have something to say to her, but now I have no chance to say it…”

The little black cat raised its head and licked his fingers.

Song Jun stopped and looked down at the little black cat, knowing that it was comforting him, so he whispered, “Thank you.”

Later, Song Jun fell asleep on the sofa holding the little cat.

Because he was too tired, although Song Jun’s posture was not so comfortable, he didn’t even have a dream and fell into a sleepless sleep.

In the middle of the night, Song Jun was suddenly awakened by a knock on the door.

He opened his eyes and was stunned for a moment before realising where he was.

The knocking on the door continued, and Song Jun stood up suddenly. He called out, “Grandma!”

The little black cat suddenly rolled from his lap to the ground, rolling around before standing up straight.

Song Jun ran towards the door, trying to open it.

Suddenly, the little black cat came over and bit his trouser leg, preventing him from passing by.

Song Jun didn’t expect such a small cat to be so strong. He couldn’t get rid of it, and his pants were almost torn. He could only squat down and say, “What’s wrong? It’s probably my grandma coming back!”

The little black cat let go of him but suddenly rushed out of the window in the next moment.

It moved so fast that Song Jun didn’t even react. The little black cat had disappeared from his eyes.

The little cat that escaped from the window suddenly expanded in size and turned into a huge black beast. The beast had a unique shape. At first glance, it looked like a huge cheetah, but if he looked closely, he would find that it had long fangs, and its body was pitch-black, with only a small handful of white furs in front of its forehead.

The giant beast rushed over and swallowed a terrifying lonely ghost outside the house door. Then, it rushed forward and disappeared in an instant.

When Song Jun opened the door, there was nothing outside.

After closing the door, Song Jun returned to the sofa in the living room, sat down, and then sat there in a daze until dawn.

After dawn, Song Jun called her grandma’s son and confirmed the news of her death. Although he was mentally prepared, Song Jun couldn’t help but feel sad. He returned to his room, tidied up briefly, and took away the toys that his grandmother had made for him when he was a child. The other things in the room no longer belonged to him.

The morning sun was bright. Song Jun came out of his home. After walking a short distance, he looked back again. He probably would not come back here again.

However, at this moment, Song Jun suddenly found a person standing next to the window of Grandma’s room.

That was clearly Song Jun’s grandmother, standing in the dark room, waving to Song Jun.

Song Jun stopped and ran towards the room, but once he entered, his grandma disappeared again.

Song Jun stood by the door, panting slightly. His grandma’s waving gesture just now clearly told him to come back, but when he came back, he couldn’t see his grandma. He didn’t understand what was going on.

After standing blankly for a while, Song Jun suddenly recalled what his grandma said to him last night. Grandma said that there were treasures inherited from his grandfather buried under the bed and asked him to dig them up and take a look. He remembered being with his grandma last night; apart from telling her about his future life, the only important thing grandma mentioned seemed to be this one. Song Jun didn’t pay attention to it at the time, but now that he thought about it, maybe it was Grandma’s last words.

Song Jun knelt down beside the bed and looked around but saw nothing under the bed.

Unwilling to give up, he rummaged carefully under the big bed, and he discovered that there was a small wooden compartment close to the bottom of the bed.

Opening the small drawer, Song Jun found a few wads of cash wrapped in a ball inside. Without counting carefully, Song Jun then knew that there were probably nearly 50,000 yuan1around $7000 there.

This was left to him by his grandmother, carefully hidden away. The spirit of the deceased had been wandering in this room, waiting for him to come back so that she could tell him about it.

Song Jun wiped away his tears and collected the money. He could not let his grandma down.

After leaving the house, Song Jun knelt in front of her grandma’s portrait and kowtowed three times earnestly.

When leaving, Song Jun once again saw his grandma in the shadow of the room. This time, he didn’t run back impulsively because he knew that his grandma would not appear if he went back.

The white-haired old woman waved to him, this time as a farewell gesture. Song Jun called out ‘Grandma’ and then turned and left under the gaze of the old woman.

Grandma left 50,000 yuan to Song Jun. With this money, Song Jun could complete three years of graduate school with peace of mind. Even if he wanted to continue his doctoral studies, he would not have to worry about living expenses.

But even so, Song Jun chose to go out to work next. Originally, he had planned to start working after the official start of school with a set class schedule. However, now he felt he shouldn’t wait any longer. He wanted to strive for an earlier and sufficient financial source so as not to make his grandmother worry.

Because he had to do experiments during the day, Song Jun went out for two days and found a night shift job in a fast food restaurant. He needed to work from 6:00 pm to 12:00 am every day. Since his workplace was not far from the school, he bought a second-hand bicycle to make it easier to commute to get off work.

Today was Song Jun’s first day at work, and tomorrow will be half of the Ghost Festival.

In fact, in big cities, the atmosphere of the Ghost Festival was not that substantial. However, when he was a child, people could often be seen burning paper on the roadside in rural villages in small counties. He asked his grandma at that time, and she said they were all burned to the wandering ghosts passing by.

Perhaps after experiencing what happened with his grandma, Song Jun suddenly felt that even ghosts were not so scary anymore. Maybe they had some reason to linger in the human world, looking forward to seeing their relatives and lovers for the last time.

Although the fast food restaurant closes at 12:00 am, there was basically no work after 10:00 pm in the evening. Song Jun helped clear the counter and then cleaned the store. At 11:30 pm, the fast food restaurant would close and no longer accept new customers. By 12:00 am, work was finished, and he left promptly.

On his first day at work, Song Jun came out of a fast food restaurant and walked to the bicycle park on the side of the road to pick up his vehicle, and found that his bicycle had been stolen. Although it was a second-hand bicycle, it looked quite new, but the lock was not very strong. It was probably for this reason that the thief took it away.

Suddenly, he felt unspeakably frustrated. On the first day, he came out to work; he didn’t make any money but lost a bicycle. It only took more than ten minutes to go back to school from here by bike, but it took nearly forty minutes to walk. It was too late when he went back, and the buses were gone. If he took a taxi, wouldn’t that be a lot of money spent?

Song Jun felt that he was really unlucky and wondered if he should go to the temple to worship.

But there was no other option now. Song Jun walked towards a bus stop on the roadside, hoping to catch a taxi there.

He stood by the roadside for a few minutes, but before the taxi came, he suddenly saw a bus coming from a distance, and that bus was heading in the direction of the school.

The bus drove to the station, stopped, and the door suddenly opened in front of Song Jun.

This bus obviously leaves at ten o’clock, so how could it be possible that there was still a bus now? Song Jun was stunned for a moment and looked up at the driver in the car.

Notes:
I need to confess. I can only work on this series when the day is bright like mad bright since I’m a scaredy cat and I got spooked out multiple times already (T⌓T)
I usually work from 8am to 5pm every Monday to Saturday, and usually, I can only work on it on Sunday when I have no work for me… So the update for this series might slow… Sorry for the inconvenience…
I really thought it wouldn’t be that scary at first tho… I thought just… like… mentioning about ghosts a bit here and there…
