Chapter 24 – Arrogance

Chapter 24: Arrogance

“Is the phoenix in heat?”

“…”

Su Muluo, who was in a daze, heard this and his scattered thoughts started to gather. His head didn’t feel as foggy anymore.

In short, he was woken up by anger.

He then raised his hand and gave Long Ling a smack on the head.

Long Ling: “?”

He didn’t expect his phoenix to react this way, showing a bit of surprise on his face, which was soon followed by another smack from Su Muluo.

Even though his phoenix’s hits were light, Long Ling moved closer, gently holding Su Muluo’s wrist, and said, “Phoenix, you’re awake? How are you feeling? Any better?”

Su Muluo hugged the blanket, feeling slightly relieved from the unbearable heat but still somewhat uncomfortable, not wanting to speak much.

However, he remembered the nonsense this dragon just spouted and weakly retorted, “You’re the one in heat… I don’t have a heat period.”

Long Ling remained silent, thinking that Su Muluo had previously claimed not to have a molting period either, but it turned out he did.

Of course, he wouldn’t say such a thing out loud, fearing he might get hit again. Instead, he gently soothed, “Alright, no heat period then. If Phoenix says no, then there’s none. I must have been mistaken.”

For now, there’s none… But will there really never be?

Long Ling still had a bit of expectation in his heart. Su Muluo, hearing this, snorted softly and buried his face into the pillow.

Even though his phoenix was awake, he still looked listless. Seeing this, Long Ling poured him a cup of warm water, saying, “Have some water, it’ll help a bit.”

Su Muluo didn’t want to move and said, “I want something cold.”

Long Ling refused, “No, it’s cold weather now, drinking cold water could make you sick.”

“I won’t get sick,” Su Muluo mumbled, feeling the persistent heat and dizziness. “I just want something cold.”

His voice, soft due to discomfort, sounded like he was whining. Long Ling felt a string in his heart being lightly plucked, making him want to hug his phoenix and kiss him.

But since his phoenix was feeling unwell, he restrained himself, applying slight force with his fingertips to coat the cup with a thin layer of frost.

“Just a bit cold,” Long Ling brought the cup to Su Muluo’s lips. “Can’t drink too cold.”

Su Muluo glanced at the cup, then at him, his eyes brightening. “What kind of dragon are you?”

Long Ling replied, “A black dragon.”

Honestly, he wasn’t very clear about his own identity or what a black dragon represented among the dragon tribe.

Su Muluo gave a simple “oh” and didn’t ask further, taking the cup of cold water and drinking it in one go. He squinted his eyes in delight. “So good.”

The slightly cold liquid alleviated some of the heat, and without that unbearable warmth, he felt a bit better. He finished the entire cup of cold water and snuggled back into the blanket.

Long Ling thought his phoenix now resembled a well-fed kitten, all soft and cuddly, enjoying the comfort of the bed.

If only he could snuggle into my arms.

This thought crossed his mind, but he didn’t show it. Instead, he asked, “Feeling better now?”

Su Muluo nodded.

Long Ling touched his forehead, finding it not as hot as before, and asked, “If it’s not a heat period, could it be a fever?”

“I’m not in heat,” Su Muluo refuted again, then said, “And I don’t get fevers.”

After all, as a phoenix, he wouldn’t get sick easily.

But this time was indeed strange. From initially feeling sleepy and shedding feathers to now being feverish in the middle of the night… It was worrying no matter how you looked at it.

Su Muluo furrowed his brows slightly and glanced at Long Ling.

Long Ling, understanding what he wanted to say, took the blame naturally, “Maybe it’s related to me.”

“I think so too,” Su Muluo said, “I started feeling strange when you were about to transform.”

He sounded a bit aggrieved but didn’t really mean to blame him, just stating a fact.

Long Ling thought for a moment and said, “I should have hatched earlier, or before the phoenix, so that the phoenix wouldn’t have to suffer.”

Clearly, there was some connection between them. Maybe their souls were tied together, so when he underwent a change, his phoenix would be affected too.

If he had hatched earlier than the phoenix, the situation might have reversed, and he would have been the one affected, sparing his phoenix the discomfort.

Su Muluo shook his head after hearing this, “We only discovered this today; we didn’t know before. And also…”

And also, he liked this bond, like an unbreakable tie binding him to his dragon.

He didn’t say the latter part, just keeping it as a small thought in his heart. Long Ling stared at him for a few seconds, seeing his phoenix not continue, and asked, “And also what?”

Su Muluo glanced at him, pulled the blanket over his head.

Long Ling shook the blanket, “And also what? Phoenix hasn’t finished talking.”

The blanket shook, and Su Muluo slowly turned his back to him.

Long Ling’s dark golden eyes showed a hint of amusement. After a few seconds, he said, “Phoenix, I can’t sleep.”

Su Muluo stayed silent.

Long Ling continued, “The sofa is hard.”

Su Muluo stayed silent.

Long Ling added, “It’s cold outside.”

Su Muluo stayed silent.

After a pause, Long Ling pitifully said, “Phoenix is so mean, coaxing Phoenix just now, but now Phoenix doesn’t want me anymore.”

“…”

Su Muluo poked his head out of the blanket, revealing only his eyes, “You just said you weren’t afraid of the cold.”

Long Ling was slightly choked by this. The next second, he decisively transformed into a small black dragon.

The little black dragon nestled by the pillow, raising its head and looking pitifully at his phoenix.

Su Muluo stayed silent.

Then he pulled the blanket open a bit.

The little black dragon happily made a soft sound and burrowed into the blanket, curling up next to his phoenix.

Su Muluo looked at the soft little dragon and gently poked it.

The little black dragon immediately hugged his finger, rubbing its small horns against it.

Su Muluo’s lips curled up slightly. The discomfort of sleeping alone finally disappeared. He closed his eyes and fell asleep next to his dragon.

The next morning, Su Muluo took Long Ling shopping, buying clothes.

The mall was bustling with people everywhere. Standing together, Su Muluo and Long Ling’s looks attracted quite a bit of attention.

This made Long Ling very dissatisfied, “If I had known, we should have worn masks before going out.”

Su Muluo thought for a moment, “That would only draw more attention.”

“Doesn’t matter,” Long Ling said, “At least this way, they wouldn’t see Phoenix’s face. Phoenix is so good-looking, I don’t want them to see.”

This was his first time accompanying his phoenix out in human form. Without the perspective of a small dragon, he could now clearly feel the gazes directed at his phoenix.

He didn’t like those admiring gazes, feeling like the treasure he wanted to hide was exposed to the daylight, attracting greedy looks… This stirred his possessiveness and made him very unhappy. He just wanted to take his phoenix back home, hide him in a place only he knew, and stroke his feathers.

Su Muluo saw through his thoughts instantly, “You wish. I’m not letting you stroke my feathers.”

Then he walked ahead quickly.

The mall was large, and they strolled slowly. A few minutes later, Su Muluo spotted a piece of clothing, “Do you like it?”

Long Ling glanced at it, “If Phoenix likes it, I like it.”

Su Muluo asked the sales clerk to bring over the clothing and compared it against Long Ling.

“Hmm, it seems nice,” Su Muluo said, “Do you want to try it on?”

Long Ling nodded, “How do I try it on?”

“There’s a fitting room over there. You just change into this and come out for me to see,” Su Muluo explained.

Long Ling made a sound of acknowledgment but didn’t move.

Su Muluo: “What’s wrong?”

Long Ling: “I don’t know how.”

Su Muluo: “?”

“I don’t know how to wear such clothes,” Long Ling said matter-of-factly, “The clothes I’m wearing now are transformed from my scales, so I’ve never worn human clothes before.”

Su Muluo paused for a moment, “You don’t expect me to help you dress, do you?”

Long Ling looked innocent, “But if Phoenix doesn’t teach me, I really don’t know how to wear them.”

This argument seemed quite reasonable and convincing. Su Muluo looked at Long Ling, whose face clearly said, “I’m not lying, I’m telling the truth, I’m very obedient,” and remained silent for a few seconds.

Then he clicked his tongue, turned around, and headed for the fitting room.

Long Ling obediently followed him, so the sales clerk watched in astonishment as the two men entered the same fitting room.

Sales clerk: “…”

She lowered her head and started posting on social media.

In the dressing room, Su Muluo bowed his head as he buttoned up Long Ling’s shirt.

The space was small, just enough to fit one adult man. If there were two people, it would be cramped—so even though Su Muluo tried to keep his distance, he was still very close to Long Ling.

Too close, he could even smell Long Ling’s scent… It was familiar, comforting, and pleasant to him.

Su Muluo stayed silent, and Long Ling also did not speak. When Su Muluo finished fastening the second to last button and looked up, he found Long Ling watching him intently, his dark golden eyes unblinking.

Before they went out, Long Ling had concealed his eyes to look like ordinary black ones. But here, he reverted to his original eye color.

Those dark golden eyes were profoundly deep, the eyes of a dragon. Cold as snowy mountains when distant, yet now they were a vast, gentle ocean, quietly and intently focused on Su Muluo, as if he was the only person in the world.

Su Muluo met Long Ling’s gaze for a few seconds before abruptly looking away, saying, “All done.”

He tried to step back immediately but forgot about the cramped space and almost bumped into the door behind him—

Long Ling swiftly raised his hand, his long, strong fingers pressing against the back of Su Muluo’s head, saying, “Be careful.”

Now they were even closer. Su Muluo suddenly realized that his little black dragon, usually small and delicate, was taller than him by half a head when in human form. At this moment, with his hand protecting the back of his head, Long Ling almost enveloped him completely in his embrace.

“…”

Without hesitation, Su Muluo opened the dressing room door and walked out.

Long Ling watched his retreating figure without looking back, a slight smile on his lips, thinking that his phoenix had just been shy.

And he had let him hold him.

So, does that mean he could hold his phoenix in bed tonight?

The little black dragon’s thoughts were very pleasant as he followed Su Muluo’s steps.

However, despite his beautiful thoughts, reality was harsh. Long Ling soon realized that his excuse of not knowing how to dress didn’t work because his phoenix didn’t give him a chance to try on clothes.

“These few, let’s buy them all.”

Long Ling watched as Su Muluo efficiently picked out several pieces of clothing, trying to remind him, “I haven’t tried them on yet.”

Su Muluo replied, “No need to try.”

Long Ling said, “But if I don’t try them on, what if they don’t fit?”

Su Muluo gave him a glance, his tone indifferent, “Then we’ll buy more. I have money.”

Long Ling: “…”

The penniless black dragon silently followed the wealthy phoenix without a word.

After leaving that store, Su Muluo planned to continue looking in another store. But after just a few steps, a feather floated down from him.

Su Muluo: “?”

Another one fell???

Long Ling quickly caught the feather.

Su Muluo looked at him and said, “Give it to me.”

Long Ling curved his lips, saying, “No, phoenix feathers are so soft, I want it.”

Su Muluo: “I already gave you three feathers to make a bracelet last time, you can’t have this one.”

Even fallen feathers were precious to him. If it weren’t for the fact that this was his dragon, he wouldn’t give even one. Giving three at once was already very generous! No more!

After thinking for a moment, Long Ling said, “Then let me kiss you once and I’ll give it to you.”

Su Muluo: “?”

Long Ling’s eyes sparkled as he said, “Just one kiss, a small one.”

Su Muluo: “??”

That’s his feather! Why should he kiss for it!

With a blank expression, he said, “No kiss, give it to me now.”

Long Ling said, “No kiss, no feather. I’ve kissed the phoenix several times, but the phoenix doesn’t even kiss me once, so stingy.”

After saying this, he hid the feather away.

Very arrogant.

Su Muluo: “…”

Moments later, a small black dragon was tied into a very pretty knot, hanging from Su Muluo’s finger like a keychain, swinging back and forth, back and forth.

His eyes were filled with deep resentment.

But he still stubbornly clutched the feather tightly with his little paws, refusing to let go.

Chapter 10 – I don't think I'm fat, but the Prime Minister asked me to eat less.

Chapter 10 – I don’t think I’m fat, but the Prime Minister asked me to eat less.

The next day, Zhao Qi and Empress Dowager Wen set off for Muyang Mountain, with Xiao Shiqing leading a delegation of civil and military officials to see them off. This was Zhao Qi’s first time leaving the palace since entering the book, and he remarked: “I’m so happy—what a joke.”

He didn’t want to leave the palace at all. All he wanted was to stay in his quarters, eat and sleep to his heart’s content, and enjoy some peace and quiet. The palace was tightly guarded, with bodyguards everywhere, making it very safe. Outside the palace, the dangers were numerous, with too many people wishing for his demise. There might even be a bunch of assassins waiting to strike from some unseen bush.

Zhao Qi repeatedly instructed He Changzhou, “Once we leave the palace, you must not leave my side for even a step. You need to stick close to me at all times. Do you understand?”

He Changzhou asked, “What about when we sleep?”

Zhao Qi replied, “We can sleep in the same room.”

He Changzhou touched his nose, “That…”

“He Xiaojiangjun needn’t hesitate,” Xiao Shiqing approached them and said coldly, “The emperor’s dragon bed isn’t something just anyone can access—have we prepared everything?”

He Changzhou replied, “Yes, we can set off at any time.”

“Then what are we waiting for?” Xiao Shiqing said, “Let’s invite the Empress Dowager.”

Zhao Qi helped Empress Dowager Wen to the carriage and then went to his own carriage. Jiang Dehai was squatting on the ground, as per custom, Zhao Qi was supposed to step on his back to get into the carriage.

Zhao Qi waved his hand and said, “No need for that. I can get in myself.”

Xiao Shiqing looked at the small emperor, who only reached his shoulder, “Are you sure?”

He Changzhou said, “I’ll carry the emperor into the carriage.”

Xiao Shiqing, somewhat puzzled, remarked, “General, are you addicted to carrying people?”

He Changzhou: “…”

Zhao Qi, who was struggling to climb into the carriage, thought, “???”

Xiao Shiqing said淡淡ly, “Since he wants to climb, let him climb.”

With the authority of the prime minister speaking, He Changzhou had no choice but to comply.

The carriage was slightly lower than the horse but still not easy to get into. Zhao Qi, being a homebody who was even pinned down by a sick Rong Tang, had poor physical strength. He grabbed the railing of the carriage and, using all his strength, managed to get one foot inside and clambered up with difficulty. He sighed in relief, thinking that this wouldn’t do for the long run; he’d have to exercise more like the concubines in the palace.

Zhao Qi looked down at Xiao Shiqing and said, “Prime Minister, I’m heading off first. I’ll trouble you to stay in the palace and hold down the fort for the next few days.”

Xiao Shiqing played along with Zhao Qi’s show, smiling faintly, “Your Majesty, rest assured.”

Zhao Qi turned to enter the carriage but accidentally stepped into thin air. He struggled to keep his balance on the edge but everything happened too fast. He could only close his eyes in resignation.

With the surrounding attendants’ screams, Zhao Qi landed heavily against someone. The person grunted, took a step back, and held Zhao Qi’s waist, managing to steady himself.

Zhao Qi smelled a familiar faint scent of ink, and then Xiao Shiqing’s voice came to his ear, “Has His Majesty gained weight?”

Zhao Qi: “…”

“Eat less on the mountain,” Xiao Shiqing held Zhao Qi a moment longer before letting him go.

He Changzhou had a complex expression and asked, “Is His Majesty alright?”

“I’m fine.” Zhao Qi rubbed his waist. After being a couch potato for so long, he did gain some weight, but his waist was still quite slim.

Jiang Dehai, still shaken, said, “Your Majesty, you scared me half to death! Please step on my back to get in!”

Zhao Qi, not wanting to cause more trouble, agreed, “Alright then.”

“No need,” He Changzhou said, lifting Zhao Qi with one hand and effortlessly placing him in the carriage. He smiled, “Your Majesty, please steady yourself.”

Zhao Qi enthusiastically exclaimed, “General He, you really are as strong as a mountain and impressive—well done, my general.”

Xiao Shiqing narrowed his eyes slightly and turned away, “It’s getting late. Your Majesty, please proceed.”

Other ministers echoed, “Farewell to His Majesty and the Empress Dowager.”

Muyang Mountain was located on the outskirts of the capital and it would take about a day to get there from the palace. Zhao Qi’s carriage was very spacious, equipped with a bed, a table, and a bookshelf filled with books to keep him entertained.

However, reading was impossible. Although Zhao Qi could recognize every word, reading them together was beyond his comprehension. It took him half a day to turn one page, and he thought it was better to take a nap instead. Moreover, the ride was quite uncomfortable, with the uneven road making him nauseous shortly after he got on.

During a rest stop, He Changzhou brought a bunch of food into the carriage and was startled by Zhao Qi’s pale face, “Your Majesty, what’s wrong?”

Zhao Qi was wrapped in a blanket, revealing only his pale face, and weakly said, “I’m feeling a bit carsick.”

“Why didn’t you say earlier that you get carriage-sick, Your Majesty?” He Changzhou placed the food on the table and took out a piece of hawthorn cake, offering it to Zhao Qi. “Eating something sour should help. Open your mouth.”

Zhao Qi shook his head. “I don’t want to eat.” He couldn’t stomach anything right now; he was sure he would just throw up if he tried.

He Changzhou looked at him and teased, “Is it because you listened to the Chancellor’s advice that you’re refusing to eat?”

… What does that even mean? Zhao Qi didn’t bother to explain. “Yes, he said I’m getting fat.”

He Changzhou paused for a moment and then said, “Don’t listen to the Chancellor. Not only are you not fat, but you should actually eat more. I can wrap my hands around your waist.”

Zhao Qi forced a smile. “I really don’t want to eat.”

He Changzhou suggested, “Or how about riding a horse with me?”

“Oh?!” Zhao Qi became interested. “But I’m not very good at riding horses.”

He Changzhou was surprised. “You don’t know how? Isn’t horsemanship a mandatory skill for the princes of Dajin?”

Zhao Qi huffed and puffed, “I didn’t learn it well.”

He Changzhou said, “Then I’ll just ride the same horse with you.”

Zhao Qi got out of the carriage and followed He Changzhou. He Changzhou’s horse was resting beside the carriage. Jiang Dehai, upon learning that Zhao Qi was going to ride, became worried like a mother. “Is this really alright? What if something happens and the Emperor gets hurt…”

He Changzhou interrupted, “Don’t worry, Father Jiang. With me here, His Majesty will be safe.”

Zhao Qi looked at the horse, which was about the same height as him, and asked, “Can I trust you, General He?”

A flicker of surprise crossed He Changzhou’s eyes. “You can.” He embraced Zhao Qi’s waist and helped him mount the horse.

Zhao Qi sat in front, with He Changzhou’s solid chest behind him. He Changzhou’s arms wrapped around him as he took the reins. “How do you feel, Your Majesty?”

Zhao Qi took a deep breath. “I feel that the air outside is so refreshing.”

He Changzhou smiled brightly. “Hold on tight, Your Majesty.”

Although riding a horse was a bit bumpy, the air was much better than sitting in the carriage. The horse moved slowly, and Jiang Dehai followed on foot, his eyes fixed on Zhao Qi, worried that he might fall off. The spring breeze brought the scent of fresh grass, similar to the fragrance on He Changzhou.

Speaking of which, He Changzhou, Xiao Shiqing, and Rong Tang all had distinct scents. Zhao Qi wondered if he had a scent as well.

He Changzhou’s voice came from behind. “What are you thinking about, Your Majesty?”

“The scent.”

“Mm?”

“Do I have a scent?”

He Changzhou said, “Yes.”

“What kind of scent?”

He Changzhou leaned down and sniffed Zhao Qi’s hair. “Sweet.”

Zhao Qi: ???

Jiang Dehai laughed. “The Yonghua Palace has been burning dragon’s saliva incense for years, so His Majesty probably smells of dragon’s saliva incense.”

“Is that so?” He Changzhou said, “No wonder I don’t smell it elsewhere.”

“Do you like it?” Zhao Qi glanced back slightly in the spring light, his hair tousled by the breeze. “I’ll reward you with some later.”

Jiang Dehai’s expression changed. “That’s not appropriate, Your Majesty. Since ancient times, dragon’s saliva incense has been used exclusively by the imperial family. Not even ordinary officials or the Empress can use it.”

“It’s alright,” He Changzhou looked at Zhao Qi’s profile. “When I want to smell it, I can just come to see you.”

Chapter 1

On a summer night, after a few muffled thunders, it began to rain heavily. The city was drenched with rain in a matter of seconds, even washing out the neon sign that read ‘The Beauty Welcomes the Noble Guests, Indulging Them in a Dreamlike Gentleness’.

This was a signboard from Lihao. As the largest nightclub in K City, the sudden heavy rain did not have much impact on its business. It was like a demon squatting in the city, exuding a seductive aura that attracted people who were greedy for pleasure, fabricating ambiguous and erotic nights and greedily sucking up the money in their pockets.

A window in the third-floor corridor was open, and the bright yellow light outlined a dark shadow beside the window. It was of a young man, about twenty-seven or seventy-eight years old, with particularly conspicuous burgundy hair. The bangs were very long and hung low, almost covering his eyes. He was resting his elbows on the window frame, quietly looking at the rain outside.

He took out a cigarette from his pocket, lit it, and took a drag. The overly strong nicotine breath rushed into the lungs and irritated his throat, making him cough uncontrollably.

They said that alcohol relieved worries and smoke dissipated sorrow. As for this cigarette, he still couldn’t get used to it.

The cigarette burned inch by inch between his fingers. His fingers were long and slender, with distinct joints, and clean without any traces of labour. His tall and upright figure, dressed in the standard white shirt and black vest of a waiter, looked somewhat handsome, but unfortunately, the bright red, punk-style hair on his head completely ruined the effect. On his chest, he crookedly wore a gold nameplate with a golden eagle emblem on the front and the words ‘Lihao 3rd Floor Waiter—Ah Zhou’ on the back.

The cigarette was left behind by a guest, quite strong and not from a high-quality brand. The third floor where he worked catered to ordinary customers with modest spending and even more modest tips, unlike the higher floors. The structure of Lihao was very clear: the higher the floor, the more upscale the service, and the more extravagant the customers, leading to higher tips. However, serving those high rollers required more careful attention, and since he had only been there for three months, he hadn’t had a chance for a promotion yet.

“Tsk, Ah Zhou.” A similarly dressed waiter came out of the private room, leaned over, and grabbed the cigarette in his hand. The waiter took two puffs, then stuffed it back into his hand, grinning, “You’re quite good at slacking off.”

He frowned slightly, almost unnoticeably, and turned sideways to avoid the man’s approach. He threw the cigarette butt on the ground and said, “Are you saying I should just stand there and be a spectator while they’re doing that kind of thing inside?”

The waiter with the name tag ‘Xiao Ding’ on his chest knew what he meant. He smiled, tilted his head and said, “Have you heard that there is a new nightclub in the south of the city, and it is quite big? Ah Qing’s brother works there, and I heard the pay is not bad.”

       “You want to change jobs?”

“No.” Xiao Ding pointed to the eagle on the name tag on his chest and said with some pride, “K City is Golden Eagle’s territory, and Lihao is Golden Eagle’s industry. We are all Golden Eagle people and anyone daring to compete with us for business is just seeking their own demise.”

Ah Zhou looked at him noncommittally, “You certainly have a strong sense of belonging.”

“Of course, the first rule of the employee code is to be loyal to the group.” As he was talking, the buzzer in his hand buzzed. He frowned and said, “This guy keeps asking for drinks, then calls for a girl but complains about the prices, always picking the cheapest options. What a cheapskate… Anyway, stop talking and get in there quickly. It would be a disaster if Ning ge caught you slacking off.” He hurried back to the private room to serve the guests.

The rain was still falling, washing over the entire city, and the cool and moist wind came with it, blowing away his burgundy hair, which was hanging on his forehead, exposing his entire face.

It was a very fair face, without any impetuous air. The eyes exposed from under the exaggerated bangs had a distant and lonely look, indifferent to a bit of cold, which was incompatible with this luxurious occasion.

The buzzer in his pocket vibrated, making a monotonous electronic sound. A trace of exhaustion and boredom flashed across his eyes. He wiped his burgundy hair carelessly, turned around and walked towards the private room he was responsible for. His eyes accidentally caught a glimpse of the person looking at him not far away, and his steps stopped. After a moment of astonishment, he quickly lowered his gaze and even deliberately lowered his head to let the bangs on his forehead fall down to cover his eyes and said in a formulaic and plain voice, “Good evening, General Tang, and welcome to Lihao.”

The man who stopped in the corridor curved his lips and smiled. He walked to him and stood in front of him. He said, “It’s almost the end of your shift. Let’s go out for a snack together?”

“Thank you. I’m not hungry.” Ah Zhou lowered his gaze and said, “I have to go to work. I wish you a good time at Lihao tonight.” After saying that, he was about to go around the other party but was caught. he was taken aback and instinctively shook his hand to break away, but unexpectedly the other side squeezed it very tightly and didn’t shake it off. He raised his eyebrows at the other party with anger.

Tang Shaocheng, who had been rejected, initially intended to lose his temper, but the sight of the other party’s cold, stern expression stirred something in his heart. His anger immediately dissipated, and he slowly let go.

After all, there were so many beautiful young men. He had lowered his pride and persisted for so long just for this rare, distinctive cold demeanour, hadn’t he?

Tang Shaocheng, who prided himself on his refined taste, always looked down on the women with a whiff of the underworld in the soul-selling cave. One night three months ago, as he was going downstairs, he happened to see a waiter entering the VIP elevator. When their eyes met, the waiter immediately realised and stepped back.

Just this look was enough to make him stunned. He thought he had it within his grasp, but three months had passed, and he had used every trick in the book without getting him into bed. The fact that he was occasionally willing to have a meal with him alone was a great honour. However, he did not intend to give up.

This Ah Zhou really made him curious.

Despite being someone struggling on the lower rungs of society, he never showed any eagerness to please. Even when he was being humble and compliant, there was an indescribable aloofness about him. Though he had an exceptionally handsome face, with eyes as clear as a tranquil pool that could captivate anyone, he stubbornly refused to cut his bright red punk hair. Despite the opportunity to use his connections to advance by associating with influential people, he refused to attend any gatherings or accept any gifts from him. Even though financially strained, he maintained impeccable dining etiquette in upscale venues, exuding a remarkable composure. On one occasion, he inadvertently saw Ah Zhou showing a mocking expression when a waiter said the wrong name of a wine.

The more he came into contact with him, the more he felt that there was an elegant and calm demeanour in Ah Zhou’s movements. This magnanimity seemed to be innate, and deeply ingrained, and even someone who had been raised in luxury like him might not measure up. For this reason, he had even gone so far as to have someone investigate Ah Zhou’s background, but so far, he had found nothing.

       Beautiful, cold, defensive, and rebellious.

Like a leopard dormant in the mountains and forests—it was difficult to approach and could not be caught. He was also like a flower on a high mountain, standing proudly on a cliff, tempting people to flock to it.

Difficult puzzles always sparked a deeper curiosity, making him, as a puzzle-solver, eager to delve into them endlessly.

“Are you free tomorrow afternoon? I asked someone to bring some beef over from Japan. Let’s try it together.” Tang Shaocheng sometimes felt that Ah Zhou was the true nobleman who would disregard a fortune, while he himself had become the one fawning over a wealthy patron. From the initial novelty to later exerting all his effort to discover who had the upper hand, he found that he only grew more determined in this dynamic, and he even admired his own patience.

“I have a night shift tomorrow, and I have to sleep in the afternoon.”

Tang Shaocheng was not surprised at all by his rejection and continued, “Then I will come to your private room tomorrow night.”

“If General Tang is not afraid of losing reputation by coming to this floor, I don’t mind.”

“Reputation is nothing compared to you.” Tang Shaocheng smiled, “See you tomorrow night.”

Ah Zhou looked at him, said, “I’m leaving,” and turned back to room 364. The guests inside were already very drunk. Their bloated bodies were leaning against the almost naked escort Lan Xin, and they kept shouting, “One more round.” Lan Xin threw the dice on the table and said with a sweet smile, “Boss Zhang, you haven’t drunk this plate of fine wine yet. You are a grown man; you can’t play tricks with a little girl like me.” After saying this, he drank heavily from the wine glass in his hand. The fat man drank it all down, muttered noisily for a short while, and was completely drunk.

Seeing that he didn’t respond, Lan Xin stopped smiling, pushed him aside hard, and said in a cold voice, “Touching and kissing and still not giving a tip. Does he think five hundred yuan is enough to get me to perform? Bah!” After saying that, she neatly picked up a cigarette and put it in her mouth, but the lighter could not be lit. She cursed irritably and turned around to see Ah Zhou standing by the door. She curled her red lips, crossed her legs and hooked her fingers, “Here, light a cigarette for me.”

Ah Zhou didn’t say anything. He bent down to pick up the red coat that had been thrown on the ground. He walked over and put it on her body. He then took out a lighter from his vest pocket with the words ‘Lihao welcomes you’ printed on it, lit it for her, and then sat down next to her.

Lan Xin looked at him for a while and then said, “Why? Isn’t this sister good-looking?”

       “Tired of seeing it.”

Hearing his answer, she couldn’t help but burst into laughter, “You’re something else… There are plenty of people who want a taste of me, and you’re not interested. Could it be that you’re actually into guys? That Boss Tang seems quite taken with you.”

“That’s his business.” Ah Zhou said very coldly.

Lan Xin smiled, hooked his shoulder, and brought the half-smoked cigarette to his mouth, “Take a puff.” Seeing him frown, she stopped her hand and said, “Okay, I won’t play with you anymore. What about this fat guy? I don’t want to stay here with him; it’s greasy and disgusting.”

A Zhou fiddled with the glowing order device in his hand and said, “Send him to the panoramic suite upstairs.”

“He is so stingy how can he order that…” Lan Xin paused at this point as if she suddenly came to her senses, her red lips curled up, “You are a bad boy. But, if he gets into trouble…”

“He is not Lihao’s VIP, no one will care.”

“That’s right.” She pinched the fat man’s face with her bright red nails and said with a smile, “I’ve let you take advantage of me; this time, I’ll make sure to drain you properly.”

The top three floors of Lihau featured various high-end rooms, offering the most ‘comprehensive’ services to satisfy those wealthy patrons who were reluctant to wake from their indulgent dreams, with prices often exceeding tens of thousands. Zhang Pangzi, being just a small-time individual boss, usually only sneaked out some private money to indulge himself in secret, liked to get hands-on but was very stingy, even reluctant to leave a tip. He would never have dared to book such an expensive room. When he was drunk, Ah Zhou took the liberty of booking it for him. When Zhang Pangzi woke up and caused a scene, Ah Zhou and Lan Xin both insisted that it was Zhang Pangzi’s own choice. The fat man had no choice but to swallow this silent loss. As a result, he probably wouldn’t have had the money to come back for a long time.

“The person who is waiting for the guest room will come to pick him up. You can get off work.” Ah Zhou said.

“Mm. Yuanyuan is still waiting for me at home.” Lan Xin put on her clothes, took out a small mirror from her handbag, and quickly used a wet wipe to remove her lipstick and eyeshadow. Her face, now bare, showed a clean and gentle appearance, lacking the sharp allure of smoky makeup and revealing a softer, more subdued warmth. Compared to other hostesses, at thirty-eight, she was no longer young. There were fine lines at the corners of her eyes, and her skin looked somewhat dull from the frequent use of poor-quality cosmetics. Before leaving, she waved her hand and said, “Thank you.”

Ah Zhou replied, ‘En’. He was indifferent to everyone except Lan Xin because Lan Xin helped him. He was a person who remembered favours.

Chapter 23 – Rutting Period?

Chapter 23: Rutting Period?

Su Muluo slept deeply and comfortably, feeling as if he was nestled in a warm embrace, reminiscent of when he was a little phoenix.

Back then, he would snuggle up to the dragon egg, instinctively absorbing its warmth.

As morning light filtered through the thin curtains, Su Muluo opened his eyes.

It was still a bit cold, so he curled up in the soft bedding, lazily rubbing against the hand beside him.

Wait, a hand?

Su Muluo suddenly became fully awake and looked up—

A man in black was sitting by the bed, wearing a mask, silently watching him.

“…”

Su Muluo remained speechless for a while.

The room was very quiet, almost awkwardly so. Although the dark golden eyes behind the man’s mask showed no emotion, Su Muluo somehow sensed a hint of unease.

Noticing this, he sat up and hesitantly spoke his first words: “Why are you wearing a mask?”

The man was silent for a moment before replying in a low voice, “I’m afraid you’ll find me ugly.”

The deep, pleasant voice was exactly like the one in his dreams. Su Muluo reached out slowly, testing, and removed the mask.

The man remained motionless, allowing him to take it off, revealing a handsome and flawless face, identical to what Su Muluo had seen in the Mirror of Origin.

But now, the man’s expression was not natural, showing obvious tension.

Su Muluo looked at him for a while, then lightly coughed and averted his gaze, saying, “Indeed.”

Man: “…”

Su Muluo then laughed and said, “Just kidding, you’re not ugly at all. In fact, you’re quite handsome.”

The man’s eyes brightened slightly, and he raised his hand, trying to embrace him.

Su Muluo was startled and instinctively moved aside.

He knew this man was his dragon, but he used to be a little dragon and now had turned into a real person. Suddenly, he found himself unsure how to interact with him.

It was like someone you had known for years suddenly changed drastically, and no one could easily accept that. Moreover, this was his dragon, his partner, closer than anyone else… Realizing this, Su Muluo felt even more confused about his feelings.

The man noticed his reaction, and a hint of sadness flashed in his dark golden eyes. But he quickly hid it, as he had anticipated this outcome. He soon concealed his sadness and asked, “Is the phoenix hungry? Do you want something to eat?”

The term “phoenix” reminded Su Muluo of the silver-haired young man in the Mirror of Origin, making his expression darken slightly.

He looked up at the man again and shook his head, “I’m not hungry.”

“But you’ve been sleeping for a whole day,” the man said. “The phoenix has been sleeping a lot recently and shedding feathers. You need to eat more to recover.”

Su Muluo: “…” No need to remind him about the shedding.

So he changed the subject, “I still don’t know your name. Do you have one?”

He clearly remembered his own name when he hatched, “Su Muluo.” Although he used to call his dragon Little Black Dragon, the other must have a name too.

The man nodded, “Long Ling.”

Long Ling.

Su Muluo tasted the name in his mind, and a different kind of emotion emerged, like a taste of honey, making him feel slightly sweet inside and out.

He smiled and said, “It’s a nice name.”

Long Ling’s gaze tightened, capturing this smile in his eyes. He liked seeing Su Muluo smile at him. His phoenix’s smile was beautiful, with eyes full of gentleness… reflecting only him.

He wanted the phoenix to smile at him every day, only at him.

Possessiveness, like sticky mud, spread in his heart. Long Ling showed no sign of it on his face, lowering his head and gently approaching Su Muluo.

The phoenix was right in front of him, and he inhaled the scent he liked from this person, gradually suppressing the restlessness in his heart.

Su Muluo, not knowing his intentions, tilted his head and asked, “You could already turn into a human before, right?”

Long Ling nodded again.

Su Muluo knew this dragon had pretended in front of him for several days and secretly took advantage of him. If it were before, he would have angrily patted the dragon’s head, but looking at the man sitting in front of him now, he didn’t know how to start.

Finally, he could only change the subject, “I need to get up and change. Can you go out for a bit?”

Long Ling responded with an “oh” but did not move.

“Can’t I stay here?”

Su Muluo: “Why should you stay here?”

Long Ling was very honest: “I want to see the phoenix.”

Su Muluo appreciated his honesty and promptly pushed him out.

The door closed, and Long Ling waited outside, wandering around in boredom.

Unhappy.

He hadn’t revealed his human form earlier because he was unsure if the phoenix would like his appearance and was worried the phoenix would distance himself after seeing his human form.

Now it seemed his worries were justified.

But Long Ling did not regret it. After all, Su Muluo’s body had some problems recently, and he needed to stay by the phoenix’s side to protect him.

Moreover, they had time. Maybe it wouldn’t take long for his phoenix to accept him.

After a few minutes, Su Muluo finished changing and opened the door. Long Ling immediately approached, asking, “Does the phoenix want breakfast? I can make it for you.”

Su Muluo asked, “Can you cook?”

Long Ling paused, “I can learn.”

Su Muluo laughed, “Alright, then learn from me.”

Today’s breakfast was simple porridge, not requiring much skill. First, soak the rice for half an hour, add a few drops of sesame oil, pour the rice into boiling water, stir over high heat for a few minutes until the grains swell and separate, then simmer over low heat.

As Su Muluo stirred the rice with a spoon, Long Ling watched from the side. Suddenly, Long Ling reached from behind, naturally covering Su Muluo’s hand and holding the spoon.

Su Muluo: “!”

He immediately let go of the spoon and stepped aside.

Long Ling paused and asked, “Isn’t the phoenix going to teach me?”

His tone sounded a bit aggrieved, and seeing the gloom in his eyes, Su Muluo opened his mouth to say something… but couldn’t, so he silently averted his gaze.

He felt troubled too. When Little Black Dragon hatched, he didn’t react this way.

But he knew that turning into a human meant having a closer relationship with his dragon, a relationship completely different from before—maybe because he subconsciously couldn’t accept this change, he felt so uneasy.

Su Muluo rubbed his forehead, sighing helplessly, “Just stir it a bit more, then let it simmer. Nothing else needs to be done.”

Long Ling responded with an “oh” and slowly stirred the porridge.

Neither spoke again. After half an hour, the porridge was ready. Long Ling asked, “Do you want to try it?”

Su Muluo was checking his phone nearby. Hearing this, he looked up and saw a spoonful of cooled porridge offered to him.

He took a sip, finding it soft and sticky, “Tastes good.”

Long Ling’s lips curved slightly, and he took out a bowl to serve the porridge.

Su Muluo watched him for a few seconds and suddenly asked, “Aren’t you going to taste it?”

“I’ve tried it.”

Su Muluo: “……”

So did he switch spoons?

Long Ling seemed to sense his thoughts and said, “No.”

Then he ran off with the bowl.

Su Muluo: “????”

He’s taking advantage of him again!

As expected, he’s not a proper dragon!

Su Muluo was so annoyed, but he had no way to deal with this dragon… He could only leave with a dark face and in silence.

Long Ling put the porridge he had served for Su Muluo on the table and took a bowl for himself. The two of them sat at the dining table and drank porridge. After a while, Su Muluo asked, “Why did you only hatch after coming here?”

This was a question he had wanted to ask before. Long Ling replied, “It has nothing to do with being here; it’s just that the time had come.”

Su Muluo said, “Oh,” and asked, “Then why did you need me to cook for you?”

Long Ling said, “Dragons need high temperatures to hatch.”

Su Muluo: “…… Pfft.”

Although Long Ling said it seriously, Su Muluo couldn’t help but laugh when he remembered the dragon egg that nearly got cooked into a dead egg.

Long Ling saw him laughing and smiled slightly, “The phoenix looks really good when smiling.”

Su Muluo immediately stopped smiling.

Long Ling: “……”

Su Muluo took a slow sip of porridge, thought of something, and asked, “I have another question. Why didn’t you let me pinch your tail?”

Long Ling, with anticipation, asked, “Does the phoenix let me touch its feathers?”

Su Muluo looked at him warily: “No.”

“Then I won’t let you either.” Long Ling said a bit unhappily, “I’ll let you pinch my tail when the phoenix lets me touch its feathers.”

Su Muluo: Tsk.

He stopped talking and continued to drink his porridge.

When he was almost done with his bowl, Su Muluo heard Long Ling ask, “Does the phoenix know why it fainted yesterday?”

Su Muluo shook his head and said, “If I had known, I wouldn’t have bothered with those people last night and would have gone straight home.”

He hadn’t expected to be so exhausted that he fell asleep on the street… Fortunately, his dragon brought him back.

Su Muluo suddenly felt a pang of realization and asked, “Wait, how did you bring me back last night?”

“Carried you,” Long Ling blinked and said, “The phoenix is light and soft, easy to carry.”

Su Muluo: “……”

Long Ling added, “I’d like to carry you again.”

Su Muluo: “……”

Su Muluo pushed the bowl towards Long Ling and said, “Go wash the dishes!”

So annoyed, he would make this person do all the housework from now on!

Long Ling took the bowl obediently and went to the kitchen.

Su Muluo decided not to go to the café today. After all, he hadn’t fully adjusted to interacting with Long Ling and didn’t know how to introduce him to the customers.

So, for the rest of the day, the two of them stayed in the rented apartment and didn’t go out.

At ten in the evening, Su Muluo took a shower, and then it was Long Ling’s turn—he initially tried to use the excuse that he didn’t know how to bathe to get Su Muluo to help him, but Su Muluo rejected him ruthlessly.

The sound of water came from the bathroom, and Su Muluo sat on the sofa playing with his phone. After a while, the water stopped, and Long Ling came out from the bathroom.

Su Muluo looked up—he saw the man’s well-defined upper body, with only a towel wrapped around his waist.

Su Muluo was shocked: “Where are your clothes???”

Long Ling innocently shrugged: “I don’t have any.” Then he added, “The phoenix’s pajamas are too small, I can’t wear them.”

Su Muluo: “But you were wearing clothes this morning!”

“That was my scales,” Long Ling said, “I don’t have a second set of clothes.”

Su Muluo: “……”

Su Muluo stared at the innocent-looking Long Ling for a moment, sighed, and said, “Fine, I didn’t think of that. I’ll take you out to buy some clothes tomorrow.”

Long Ling responded eagerly, “It’s late. Is the phoenix going to sleep?”

Su Muluo glanced at the time and realized it was already ten o’clock. Strangely, he wasn’t feeling very sleepy today… Maybe it was because he had slept enough yesterday?

But he hadn’t shed any fur today, which was a good thing. Su Muluo got up and walked towards the bedroom.

Long Ling followed him inside.

And then was pushed out.

Long Ling: “?”

“Wait a moment,” Su Muluo said with a stern face, “I’m getting the bedding. Go sleep on the sofa.”

He initially wanted Long Ling to sleep on the sofa, but considering he didn’t have pajamas, he might catch a cold, so he decided to sacrifice himself.

Once they bought clothes tomorrow, he would make this dragon sleep on the sofa!

Long Ling paused for a second and then asked, “Does the phoenix not want to sleep with me?”

Su Muluo: “I’m not sleeping with you. How old are you?”

“But we’re partners,” Long Ling suddenly grabbed Su Muluo’s hand, looking unhappy, “We used to sleep together.”

Su Muluo gently removed his hand and said in a very gentle tone, “That was because you were small before. Now that you’ve grown up, you need to sleep alone.”

Long Ling: “??? But I—”

“No whining!” Su Muluo said, “Otherwise, I’ll hang you on the door handle!”

Long Ling: “……”

Long Ling looked at his phoenix in silence, his gaze filled with deep resentment.

Su Muluo ignored him, cruelly taking a blanket and walking out the door—

But just as he was about to leave the bedroom, Long Ling grabbed the corner of his shirt and said, “Fine, let me sleep on the sofa.”

Su Muluo said, “No, you don’t have any pajamas.”

Long Ling said, “I’m a dragon; I’m not afraid of the cold.”

This was actually true; he wasn’t afraid of the cold. Plus, his phoenix was delicate and beautiful, so he was reluctant to make the phoenix sleep on the sofa.

But Su Muluo didn’t want Long Ling to sleep on the sofa without pajamas. The two of them debated at the door, and finally, Long Ling said, “If the phoenix doesn’t let me sleep on the sofa, I’ll carry the phoenix to bed and do this and that,” and then was driven out of the bedroom by the enraged phoenix.

With the room light turned off, Su Muluo lay in bed, and for some reason, he suddenly found it hard to fall asleep.

Usually, at this time, a little dragon would be snuggled up next to him, and they would fall asleep together… And even further back, when they were in the mountains, he and the dragon egg used to sleep close together.

Now, his dragon was still by his side, but separated by a wall and a room, no longer snuggled together.

“……”

Su Muluo suddenly realized that this was the first time in eighteen hundred years since his hatching that he was going to sleep alone.

For a moment, he wanted to call Long Ling in and sleep together like they used to. But thinking of those dark golden eyes and that man’s face… he hesitated.

Time silently passed, and the phoenix turned over a few times in bed, still unable to fall asleep.

The first half of the night seemed to drag on forever, but by the later part of the night, for some reason, a wave of drowsiness surged up suddenly, just like yesterday.

Su Muluo felt his vision blur, his eyelids too heavy to lift. He sank into the soft blankets and quickly fell asleep.

But his sleep wasn’t restful; he felt as though he was lying on searing flames. Although he wasn’t being burned, he was drenched in sweat and couldn’t seem to escape the discomfort.

The distressing sensation continued for a long time until he heard a deep, worried voice calling him—it was Long Ling waking him up.

“Phoenix, Phoenix?” Long Ling held Su Muluo’s hand, looking concerned, “What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell? I’m here, look at me.”

“……”

The familiar scent enveloped him. Su Muluo struggled to open his eyes, sweat soaking his soft black hair. His breathing was slightly rapid, and his beautiful ink-black eyes looked somewhat dazed.

Long Ling’s gaze faltered for a moment, a thought flashing through his mind. In an instant, it seemed like all of the phoenix’s unusual behavior lately was explained.

“Phoenix.”

Long Ling raised his hand, his long, slender fingers gently brushing over Su Muluo’s face. His voice was soft and slow, as if afraid of startling the phoenix, but with a hint of vague anticipation.

“Are you… in heat?”

T/N: Hello hello! There is plenty more where that came from, so stay tuned! And stay healthy! Straighten your posture, so some stretches and drink some water before continuing hehe~

Chapter 179 – Jian Sheng (Extra 4)

Chapter 179 – Jian Sheng (Extra 4)

At the beginning, Fei Yuhan disliked Jian Sheng.

No, to be precise, he had no impression of Jian Sheng. He only knew there was a human in the academy whose family had paid for his admission. But beyond that, there was nothing noteworthy about him.

Well, who can say having money isn’t a noteworthy trait?

“Brother Han, that’s the human,” his little follower pointed out during the morning assembly.

Fei Yuhan glanced in the direction indicated and saw a thinly dressed young man walking among the crowd. He was delicate in appearance, wearing a short-sleeved black school uniform and long trousers. The white short-sleeved shirt revealed his slender arms, and under the sunlight, his fair skin seemed to glow. He looked somewhat frail and quiet. It was said that humans were fragile, and this boy seemed like he could be crushed with one hand.

Rich? Fei Yuhan quickly dismissed the thought after a brief glance.

His gaze wasn’t overly aggressive, but the boy not far away still looked up, seemingly sensing the attention. His eyes were filled with curiosity and a bit of fear, like a small, friendly rabbit curious about everything. Their eyes met, and the boy politely looked away.

Not the same kind of person.

Fei Yuhan quickly concluded that he and this person could never intersect.

……

But life always seemed to have a way of playing tricks on him.

“Sir, this is your bill. Please verify and confirm the payment.” A somewhat childish voice sounded beside him. He looked up and saw that delicate face. Jian Sheng said, “The total is 2389 star coins.”

Fei Yuhan glanced at the restaurant. “Is this place yours?”

Jian Sheng was taken aback and shook his head, “No.”

“Then why are you collecting money here?”

“I!” Jian Sheng hesitated, pointing at his work uniform, “I’m a part-time waiter.”

Fei Yuhan raised an eyebrow, verified the bill, and paid with his card. However, his little followers couldn’t resist examining this rare species in the school. They started questioning:

“Hey, do you know that students working privately is against school rules?”

“If you’re punished, your parents will be called.”

“Isn’t your family quite wealthy? Why are you working here?”

A series of questions clearly confused Jian Sheng. He hadn’t realized the seriousness of the situation, and perhaps didn’t even understand why it violated school rules. The mention of calling parents clearly frightened him, and his face showed a mix of panic.

Jian Sheng blushed, gripping the bill tightly, and stammered, “I only come occasionally to earn some living expenses. I didn’t know it was against the rules. Please don’t tell the teachers. I won’t come again.”

Poor kid.

These words flashed through Fei Yuhan’s mind.

The child standing in front of him blushed, his body trembling slightly, probably malnourished. The work uniform’s collarbone was more noticeable due to tension. He was more than a head shorter than Fei Yuhan, and he looked younger. They were here to dine, but he was working, despite attending such a prestigious school.

Someone else might have felt pity, but not Fei Yuhan. He had no interest in sympathizing with others.

“Don’t worry,” Fei Yuhan said slowly, “No one’s that bored.”

Jian Sheng looked at him timidly.

Fei Yuhan, standing a head taller, looked down at him with an overwhelming presence. His handsome face carried an arrogant and indifferent smile. “If I were you, I’d read the school rules more. At least know to avoid schoolmates next time.”

Jian Sheng felt a deep sense of shame.

Fei Yuhan turned to leave but paused after a few steps. “Oh, and…”

Jian Sheng, feeling a chill, didn’t know why he was so afraid of this person. He turned around cautiously like a timid hedgehog. “What?”

“Tie your collar properly.” Fei Yuhan’s smile disappeared, his voice low.

……

!!!

It was just a simple encounter, something no one would remember, until—

At noon, a group went to the cafeteria to eat. While discussing what to eat, Fei Yuhan realized his meal card was missing.

“No way, did you lose it?”

“Could it have fallen at the restaurant yesterday?”

“Hey, could that kid have picked it up?”

“Why didn’t he return it? Maybe he wants to keep it?”

“Not necessarily…”

Fei Yuhan’s cold gaze swept over them. “Finished?”

For some reason, they all felt a chill and didn’t dare to speak further. In this school, many were influential, but Fei Yuhan had the highest prestige. He was a dragon, though not pure-blooded, he had royal blood, the same lineage as Marshal Lu Shifeng.

In the future, even if not the Dragon King, he would be a significant figure among the dragons.

Fei Yuhan withdrew his gaze. “Let’s go.”

“Boss, where to?”

“To eat.”

“But you lost your meal card.”

“Don’t you have one?”

“……”

Later, Fei Yuhan met Jian Sheng again during the school festival. Jian Sheng had bumped into him in line. He decided to ask Jian Sheng for his meal card and see what reaction he would have—perhaps pride, or… boastfulness?

Fei Yuhan stood on the path. “Meal card.”

Jian Sheng hesitated for a moment, then quickly took it out and handed it over. “I’m sorry, I wanted to return it to you, but your area was too strictly guarded, so I thought of giving it to a teacher, but I didn’t get a chance.”

Fei Yuhan gave a low “hmm.”

“Sorry for the trouble,” Jian Sheng said regretfully. “I heard it’s a hassle to replace it, needing family to come to school. It’s good I returned it in time. Don’t worry, I didn’t touch the money inside.”

Fei Yuhan said, “I know.”

“Huh?”

His face showed surprise at how Fei Yuhan knew.

Fei Yuhan said, “If you had used it, you would know I have no parents.”

Jian Sheng’s eyes showed shock, and for a moment, his gaze carried sympathy and pity, a complex mix of emotions.

Fei Yuhan looked at him indifferently. Just as Jian Sheng thought he would say something, the man moved closer. When Fei Yuhan spoke someone’s name, it had a magnetic, enchanting quality. “Jian Sheng.”

Jian Sheng stammered, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to mention…”

“If I were you, I’d read more history and learn about replication technology,” Fei Yuhan’s gaze carried a hint of mockery. “At least next time, you won’t make such a fool of yourself, right?”

“……”

Chapter 59 – Immortal's Palace

Chapter 59

Just as Ah Yi finished speaking, a cold aura instantly pervaded the cave, pressing towards Ju Zhu. Ju Zhu’s face immediately turned pale, her body trembling uncontrollably as she knelt down on the ground, her knees weak and unable to support her.

Her complexion was pale, fear seeping through her delicate features as she pleaded with Ah Yi, “My lord, the Divine Array was passed down to me from my aunt, who inherited it from Princess Fang Yi. Therefore, I… I am not fully aware of the Divine Array’s secrets. Please forgive me, my lord.”

With these words, Ju Zhu presented herself as completely innocent, though in reality, she understood everything. She believed that the secrets of the Divine Phoenix Clan were unknown to anyone else.

Haowei casually remarked, “I heard that Princess Fang Yi’s body was like a dried corpse when she died, with her blood inexplicably vanished.”

Ju Zhu’s eyes widened instantly. Embarrassed and ashamed, she looked up at Haowei. Just a second ago, she had been relieved that no one knew about this, but now Haowei had exposed it.

How could Haowei know about this?

Her lips trembled, wanting to refute Haowei, but facing his condescending gaze, a sudden fear surged through her heart, paralyzing her tongue.

Accustomed to pride and nobility, she had never felt so humble and timid before. For a moment, she couldn’t find the words to say.

The divine array set by Ah Yi was formed from his obsession, integrated into Princess Fang Yi’s body, only guarding her.

If they wanted to obtain the divine array, they could only do so after Princess Fang Yi’s death by drinking her blood, or perhaps they had killed her by drinking her blood while she was still alive.

With this thought, the hostility in the cave intensified, pressing down on Ju Zhu. Black winds rose suddenly like agile serpents, wrapping around Ju Zhu’s body. She felt as if under attack and suddenly vomited blood.

After the black aura dispersed, Ju Zhu transformed back into her original form as a divine phoenix, collapsing on the ground.

A dense formation woven like a golden net slowly emerged from her body, flying towards Ah Yi. She passed out directly from the pain, the divine array forcibly stripped from her body.

Ah Yi withdrew the formation and glanced at the unconscious Ju Zhu, ultimately deciding not to punish her.

She was Princess Fang Yi’s relative, and hurting her would displease Princess Fang Yi.

Ah Yi extended his hand, and the formation gradually shrank, landing in his palm before returning to his body.

His lips moved slightly, his voice echoing in the cave, “Emperor Haowei, my divine array was used by someone to commit murder?”

Haowei looked at Si Lan and nodded.

“In that case, it is my fault. I did not consider it thoroughly,” Ah Yi said, lowering his head. His breathing weakened, almost imperceptible within his cloak.

Si Lan withdrew his gaze from the unconscious Ju Zhu. Originally, he had many reproaches in his heart and had intended to hold Ah Yi accountable, even obtaining a fragment of the divine will. Unexpectedly, it was resolved so lightly.

From Ah Yi’s words, it seemed he had also been deceived by the Divine Phoenix Clan.

Forget it. Ah Yi was now weak and on the brink of godly death. There was nothing to argue about with a “dying” man.

Si Lan didn’t want to disturb Ah Yi’s final moments. After exchanging a glance with Haowei, they decided to bid farewell to Ah Yi. “My lord, we shall take our leave.”

Ah Yi nodded faintly. He still didn’t know that in this lifetime, due to his mistake, Si Lan had lost his mother early.

As Haowei and Si Lan left, they also cast a spell to take the unconscious Ju Zhu with them.

But as soon as they flew out of Mount Gushou, a group of divine phoenixes flew over. Sensing something wrong with Ju Zhu, they had come to rescue her.

After bowing to Emperor Haowei, the divine phoenixes turned their gaze to the unconscious Ju Zhu, surrounding her. They then warily looked at Si Lan, as if worried he might do something wrong.

“Emperor Haowei, what happened to the princess?” one of them asked.

Haowei replied calmly, “Lord Ah Yi has withdrawn the divine array from Ju Zhu.”

“What? How could this happen?”

“Did your demon do something?” This was directed at Si Lan.

The divine phoenixes glared fiercely at Si Lan, gripping their weapons, ready to fight.

Si Lan reluctantly restrained the Xuanxin Whip, prepared to face the consequences if the Divine Phoenix Clan sought retribution. At that moment, he heard Haowei’s voice.

“Jaheng Immortal has entered Nirvana.”

Si Lan couldn’t believe it. “Really?”

“Yes.” Through his divine knowledge, Yu Wudao informed Haowei about the matters of the Thirty-Three Heavens. Jaheng Immortal had been severely injured and recovering in Ling Mountain Cave since the last attack. Unexpectedly, within a few days, he had entered Nirvana.

Jaheng Immortal was second only to Shanshi among the Immortals of the Thirty-Three Heavens. His sudden Nirvana shocked the Six Realms. Yu Wudao hurriedly informed Haowei, who needed to return to oversee the aftermath.

Knowing that Haowei would probably return to the heavenly realm, Si Lan said, “In that case, I will accompany you back.” Jaheng’s sudden Nirvana likely hid some secrets.

Furthermore, by seeing Jaheng Immortal’s body, he could cast the Purification Curse to witness his memories from the year before his death. He had used this method to uncover the deep-seated enmity between Lou Yu and Zhong Li.

Haowei nodded slightly. Immediately, Si Lan transformed into a “wild chicken,” a small form hiding in Haowei’s embrace.

He couldn’t walk openly in the heavenly realm with his true identity, to avoid arousing suspicion.

On the side of Mount Gushou, even though the divine phoenixes were discontented, they didn’t dare to stop the two from leaving, only glaring angrily at Si Lan.

Si Lan didn’t look back but could feel those solidifying gazes piercing through Haowei’s body, pinning him down.

He smirked coldly. He had no intention of letting Ju Zhu off easily. Knowing her vengeful nature, she would blame him for stripping the divine array from her, likely adding old grievances to new ones.

He needed an opportunity—a moment to kill Ju Zhu and leave the Divine Phoenix Clan helpless and unable to retaliate.

He pondered aimlessly, unaware that he had followed Haowei all the way to the Thirty-Three Heavens.

Apparently conscious of his status, Haowei had swapped his black martial attire for a white robe trimmed with gold threads. His waist was adorned with a cloud-patterned belt of the same color, his black hair tied up with an ink jade crown, every strand neat and tidy.

The celestial horse seemed to have been waiting outside the Thirty-Three Heavens for Haowei, swiftly approaching with a carriage upon his appearance. Haowei gracefully entered the sedan chair.

Although the sedan appeared modest from the outside, inside it revealed a hidden world, resembling a palace with spacious elegance, wisps of clouds lingering. Within the grand hall, tea and refreshments were already laid out on the table.

Si Lan looked around like someone new to the city, his dark eyes scanning the surroundings. Haowei placed him on the table, realizing he hadn’t eaten for some time.

“Are you hungry?”

Si Lan nodded, folding his wings and sipping water from the cup’s edge, then pecking at a few pastries. He was indeed hungry, but his mind wasn’t on eating much at the moment.

Every word spoken by Supreme Youshen seemed like thunder in his mind, resonating loudly. Though the thunder had ceased, it left his mind pitted and unsettled.

He noticed Haowei was far calmer than him, only showing emotion when he recalled the moment Yuwuxia pierced his heart with a sword. Now, he appeared composed, his expression serene.

Haowei lifted a cup of hot tea from the table and drank, Si Lan realizing it was the same cup he had just used.

Transformed into a “wild chicken” appearance, his sharp beak had been in the cup while drinking, feeling somewhat embarrassed at the thought.

How could Haowei be so careless…

Clearly, his cup of tea was right there; he couldn’t understand how it got mixed up.

Just as he was about to remind him, greetings sounded from outside the carriage.

“Greetings, Your Majesty.”

Passing Buddhist disciples respectfully saluted Haowei’s carriage. The celestial horse pulled the carriage to the center of the Thirty-Three Heavens before stopping.

Si Lan was interrupted by the noise outside and turned to see Haowei had finished his tea. Haowei had also eaten the pastry Si Lan had pecked holes into with his sharp beak.

His lips twitched, but he didn’t say a word.

Haowei tucked him into his arms, lifting the curtain and stepping out of the carriage.

Feeling uncomfortable, he flew onto Haowei’s shoulder, noticing a group of celestial beings following the carriage, a dense crowd that made Haowei appear prominent.

Standing on Haowei’s shoulder, he couldn’t help but mock Haowei for being so particular; everywhere they went in the heavenly realm, he rode in a carriage with a group of heavenly soldiers and generals trailing behind, quite imposing.

Yet Haowei never seemed to put on airs around him, sometimes even making him feel like Haowei’s shadow, silently accompanying him through thick and thin.

Haowei glanced at him with a slight tilt of his head, instantly halting his random thoughts and looking ahead.

Countless Buddhist disciples knelt beneath the bright altar, chanting sutras. Above the altar, the Great Eternal Immortal sat on a lotus throne, his back leaning forward, one hand in a gesture of blessing, his face indistinct.

Behind him, a circle of gentle golden light shimmered, solemn and dignified.

Cranes circled above the sky, their mournful cries echoing. Below the sky, Buddhist disciples stood with hands clasped together, eyes closed, reciting sutras for the salvation of the Great Eternal Immortal.

Following the protocol, Haowei led the hundred celestials in completing the sutra recitation for the Great Eternal Immortal, then approached to offer incense. After these rituals, he conversed with the Immortal of the Perfect Nirvana.

“Some days ago, I came to listen to the Great Eternal Immortal’s teachings, but I never expected that in just a few days, he would attain parinirvana,” Haowei remarked.

The Immortal of the Perfect Nirvana explained, “Your Majesty, the Great Eternal planted a cause a thousand years ago, and now he has reaped its fruit. For him, this is also a form of atonement.”

Haowei asked again, “Was it because of his injury that Jia Heng attained parinirvana?”

“Yes,” replied Shanshi, clasping his hands together. “Amitabha.”

Haowei bowed respectfully to Shanshi in farewell, then spoke quietly to both Shilan and him, “After Jia Heng Immortal’s parinirvana, these Buddhist disciples will perform a forty-nine day ritual of salvation in front of the altar.”

“Why is it so long?” Shilan had intended to approach Jia Heng Immortal to use the Purification Curse, hoping to uncover memories from before his death. He found it peculiar that Jia Heng Immortal passed away before the activation of the Five-Star Nine-Sky Formation in each life.

Haowei lowered his gaze. “It’s the rule of the Thirty-Three Heavens.”

“Can we find a way to approach Jia Heng Immortal’s physical body?” Shilan glanced at the people around the altar.

“Yes.”

Night fell, shrouding the Thirty-Three Heavens in a hazy moonlight. The Immortal light above the altar remained, illuminating the scene below clearly.

Devout disciples continued to chant with folded hands, their chanting echoing softly throughout the high heavens. Though not loud, their voices carried across the entire Thirty-Three Heavens.

Strange fireflies seemed drawn by the chanting, converging towards the altar. The disciples, eyes closed in prayer, were unaware of the anomaly until they slipped into dreams woven by the fireflies.

The chanting abruptly ceased, and for a moment, the world seemed to freeze.

Shilan transformed into human form and flew with Haowei towards the altar, landing before the physical form of Jia Heng Immortal.

Even in parinirvana, his body resembled an uncorrupted sculpture, head lowered with indistinct features visible only from the side. Hanging from his chest were 1080 superior prayer beads, reflecting starlight under the Immortal’s glow.

Shilan clasped his hands in front of his chest, murmured an apology, and then touched the brow of Jia Heng Immortal to activate the Purification Curse. After completing the incantation, the surroundings suddenly changed, but the images that appeared were nothing but emptiness.

Haowei followed Shilan into the illusion and, seeing the situation, asked with a stern gaze, “What’s going on?”

“This… it means Jia Heng Immortal has been dead for a long time, at least a year,” Shilan explained.

The Purification Curse allows one to see the memories of the deceased from the year before their death. Yet the memories of the Great Eternal Immortal for that year are void, indicating that the Great Eternal Immortal before them had long since passed away.

But how could this be possible? They had just seen the Great Eternal Immortal not long ago!

The two realized something was amiss and immediately withdrew from the illusion.

Si Lan bent down to inspect the flesh of the Great Eternal Immortal. He hadn’t carefully observed him before and couldn’t see any differences. Judging from appearances alone, the face, skeleton, and aura of this flesh body seemed normal.

Haowei reached out to touch the 1080 yellow prayer beads on the chest of the Great Eternal Immortal. He had seen the Great Eternal Immortal several times before but had never seen him wear this item.

He picked up the beads, but at that moment of contact, he sensed something wrong. Each yellow bead was densely inscribed with tiny runes. However, these runes were too small to see clearly.

Si Lan also picked up a bead and examined it in his palm. “Could there be something wrong with these runes?”

Haowei nodded and forcefully broke the string of beads. The yellow beads instantly fell down, and the flesh body collapsed with a bang, gradually transforming into a skeleton.

There was still a trace of the Great Eternal Immortal’s essence and blood on the bones. That’s why Si Lan hadn’t noticed anything unusual when it first took the form of the Great Eternal Immortal.

Si Lan stared in shock, still holding a bead in his hand. He looked at the skeleton, then at the bead, murmuring, “This skeleton has been dead for over a year. It’s not the Great Eternal Immortal.”

“Hmm.” Haowei gathered the remaining essence from the skeleton, his expression growing solemn.

The Great Eternal Immortal would never fake his own death. Therefore, someone must be using this skeleton to impersonate the Great Eternal Immortal’s deceased flesh, likely having already controlled his freedom and actions.

Undoubtedly, this person was Yu Wuxia.

Si Lan couldn’t understand why Yu Wuxia would use a skeleton to impersonate the Great Eternal Immortal’s flesh.

If Yu Wuxia harbored resentment toward the Great Eternal Immortal, why not just kill him outright? Why go to such lengths?

Haowei restored the prayer beads with magic and hung them back on the skeleton. The skeleton instantly reverted to the appearance of the Great Eternal Immortal.

Looking at the “Great Eternal Immortal” before them, Si Lan murmured, “In this life, the Great Eternal Immortal faked his death. Did he also fake his death in the previous world?”

“Hmm.” Haowei’s gaze hardened. “I’m afraid there are many entanglements between master and disciple that we don’t know.”

As they were talking, footsteps suddenly approached from the side of the sacred altar. The two instinctively turned around and saw the Immortal of Benevolent Passing walking slowly towards them.

Benevolent Passing had a gentle and kind expression, dr4p3d in a yellow kasaya. He approached them and clasped his hands together, saying, “Namo Amitabha.”

Si Lan hadn’t expected to be caught off guard. Feeling somewhat embarrassed, he glanced at Haowei, who remained composed. Si Lan quietly moved behind Haowei, intending to become invisible.

“Immortal of Benevolent Passing.”

“Your Majesty, I’ve already seen everything just now.” Benevolent Passing looked at the skeleton transformed into the “Great Eternal Immortal” and sighed softly.

“Lord Immortal, you previously mentioned that the Great Eternal Immortal sowed a seed many years ago, which has now borne fruit. Could you tell us what seed the Great Eternal Immortal sowed back then?”

Benevolent Passing’s calm face showed a hint of sorrow. “Regarding the matter of the Great Eternal Immortal, I originally did not wish to speak, but I never imagined that this sinner would dare to commit such a deception. It seems that the Great Eternal Immortal is now in an unavoidable situation…”

Benevolent Passing closed his eyes, unable to hold back, and quietly said, “Namo Amitabha.”

Gaheng was a disciple of Benevolent Passing, making Yu Wuxia Benevolent Passing’s grand-disciple. When Yu Wuxia achieved Immortalhood due to his reputation of goodness across a hundred lifetimes, all Immortals wished to take him as their disciple. However, Yu Wuxia chose Gaheng.

At that time, Gaheng firmly refused Yu Wuxia, and it was Benevolent Passing’s persuasion that convinced Yu Wuxia to stay.

Sowing the seed leads to fruition. Back then, cutting flesh was the cause, and taking disciples was the effect.

Benevolent Passing had thought that under Gaheng’s guidance, this karmic effect would surely be nullified, but unexpectedly, it ended up harming Gaheng instead.

Benevolent Passing recounted all the details from the flesh-cutting in the forest to taking disciples, and concluded, “After that sinner achieved Immortalhood and worshipped under Gaheng’s seat, everything remained quiet for thousands of years. I had thought the karmic effects between them had been resolved. Yet when he performed acts of charity in the human realm, he somehow learned of his previous life as a disciple of the forest Immortal and saw Gaheng as a tiger in the forest. This led to conflict, and upon his return, he became entangled in love affairs. Gaheng finally couldn’t bear it and cast him into the demon path.”

This was not far from what they had learned, but both felt that Benevolent Passing was hiding something. Like Gaheng, he was unwilling to reveal everything.

What exactly happened that even the Immortals of the Thirty-Three Heavens remained silent about it?

After a moment of silence, Haowei spoke up, “Lord Immortal, Yu Wuxia has used his spirit as a catalyst to lay down the Five Elements Nine Heavens Formation across the Six Realms, intending to reshape them. If we want to stop Yu Wuxia, we must find his weakness. We are at a loss after reaching the Thirty-Three Heavens. We seek your guidance.”

Upon hearing “Five Elements Nine Heavens Formation,” Benevolent Passing’s expression subtly changed. He clasped his hands together and murmured, “Namo Amitabha.” After a while, he raised his head and pointed his fingertip into the void, conjuring a scroll.

It was a painting he had unexpectedly found in the hall while cleaning up “relics” left by Gaheng.

Without elaborating, he handed the painting to them. “Your Majesty, this is all I know.”

With that, Benevolent Passing departed.

Haowei took the painting and watched Benevolent Passing leave. “Thank you, Lord Immortal.”

Only then did Si Lan emerge from behind Haowei. It seemed Benevolent Passing either didn’t notice him or chose not to intervene. He sighed in relief.

Haowei unrolled the scroll, and Si Lan held his breath, observing quietly. As the scroll slowly unfolded, revealing its contents, their expressions changed dramatically.

They had expected the scroll to conceal some secret, but it turned out to be a… erotic painting of a man and a woman.

Why would Benevolent Passing Immortal give them this?

On the yellowed canvas, a woman leaned against a peach blossom tree. Her black hair was disheveled, a red mole at the corner of her eye dripping blood. Her clothes had all slipped away, revealing slender, fair legs, one foot resting on the tree trunk while the other was held by a man.

The man leaned slightly to cover the upper body of the woman, whose back was turned, so his face couldn’t be seen. His grey kasaya was half-off, barely covering his lower body, prayer beads hanging from the peach blossom branch.

From the man’s attire, one could deduce he was Yu Wuxia. As for this woman…

Si Lan glanced at the woman’s face—almond eyes teary like a clear pond, cherry lips gently holding a petal, a mix of shyness and allure. She was undeniably beautiful.

He was about to lean in closer for a better look when Haowei shot him a sideways glance and closed the scroll.

“Do you not think…” Si Lan paused as Haowei closed the scroll, “…that the woman in the painting… bears some resemblance to that fox demon?”

“Hmm.” Haowei replied in a low voice, contemplating releasing the fox demon to inquire further.

He cast a spell and conjured a demon-suppressing gourd, lifted the lid, and with a startled cry, the fox demon fell out, unprepared and stumbled to the ground.

Even so, the fox demon didn’t forget to strike a pose, slowly raising her bright face with a mix of annoyance and grievance towards Haowei, “Why are you so unappreciative of beauty?”

Haowei remained expressionless as he opened the scroll and questioned her, “Are these people your sisters?”

Seeing he wasn’t taken in, the fox demon flicked nonexistent dust off her, stood up, and with narrowed eyes, looked at the woman in the painting, “She resembles me somewhat, and also my sisters, but it’s not us.”

“Have you seen her before?”

“No,” lazily replied the fox demon, just about to look away when she noticed the crimson mole at the corner of the woman’s eye, pausing as she mused, “This… she… this mole looks like someone…”

“Who?” Haowei and Si Lan couldn’t help but ask in unison.

“Like that bald donkey.”

The Great Eternal Immortal once caught her and her little sisters, leaving a bit of an impression on her.

“…” Haowei and Si Lan.

They had both seen the Great Eternal Immortal. Although he was kind and loving, with deep wrinkles and an aged face, there was no mole at the corner of his eye. How could this woman resemble the Great Eternal Immortal?

Chapter 58 – The Dark Side of Heaven

Chapter 58

When Si Lan met the other’s gaze, a sudden sense of weightlessness swept from under his feet. Everything around him twisted into black, white, and gray lines, shimmering with faint fluorescence. Within these countless long lines flashed scene after scene.

In those scenes, it was him, yet not quite him.

He repeatedly broke through formations, arriving beneath Mount Gushan to meet the Immortal Chiyu, conversing with him.

He couldn’t hear the voices in the scenes, didn’t know what they were talking about, only saw their solemn expressions and silent gazes.

Each scene was so similar. It felt like a cycle, repeated countless times, yet each time was different.

Suddenly returning from the void of space, he still felt weightless. His body staggered backwards, but Haowei quickly reached out, wrapping his arm around Si Lan’s waist, steadying him just in time.

The Immortal Chiyu opposite appeared desiccated, with only hints of his features visible—eyes, nose, lips—but lacking any divine elegance.

In the initial scenes that flashed by, the Immortal Chiyu was tall and handsome. Later, he gradually became frail and emaciated, his features shrinking and sunken, almost resembling a dried corpse now.

What had happened in between?

Suppressing his doubts, Si Lan bowed respectfully towards the Immortal Chiyu. “God, have we met before?”

Haowei glanced at Si Lan upon hearing this.

At that moment, Zhu Ju descended from above as well, assuming a human form for easier entry into the mountain cave. She wore a deep brown gown of golden threads, flowing like flames. Behind her, a crimson silk cloak billowed without wind, while her black hair was coiled into a towering cloud bun adorned with gold and jade ornaments and white pearl hairpins.

Her face was impeccably preserved over the years, showing no signs of aging, with a subtle hint of pride that hadn’t changed.

Her gaze briefly landed on Si Lan’s face, then shifted to the hand Haowei had around Si Lan’s waist. Her brow furrowed slightly before she finally bowed to the Immortal Chiyu.

“Younger generation pays respects to the Immortal Chiyu.”

The Immortal Chiyu seemed to ignore Zhu Ju, addressing Si Lan instead. “Yes, we have met many times before.”

So, the statement “reincarnation over a hundred lifetimes” by Yu Wuxia was indeed true, indicating that he had attempted numerous times to thwart Yu Wuxia, but each attempt ended in failure.

Affected by the cycle of reincarnation, each reincarnation was a fresh start, with no memories retained. In contrast, after transcending to the realm of the Divine Emperor, the Immortal Chiyu’s memories were not reset by time and space.

All those events in the scenes must have been due to his repeated failures, hence the endless repetition.

Thinking of this, Si Lan’s mood suddenly plummeted, descending into an abyss. He couldn’t help but reach out and grasp the hand that Haowei had placed on his waist, gripping it tightly as if to dispel the overwhelming sense of weightlessness.

Haowei sensed his distress and returned the grip, the warmth in their clasped hands easing Si Lan’s uneasy heart, even without a single word spoken.

Knowing they had met many times before, the Immortal Chiyu likely already understood Si Lan’s purpose here. Thus, Si Lan asked directly, “God, how does Yu Wuxia intend to establish a new world?”

Chiyu Immortal raised a withered hand, and with black fingers, he pointed into the void. Instantly, a three-dimensional map of the Six Realms appeared in mid-air. Xuanling Mountain, Dayong Mountain, Yingzhou Island, Tianmen Pass, and Linglong Mountain were interconnected, forming a pentagram formation with the human realm at its center.

Chiyu Immortal explained, “This is the Five Star Nine Heavens Formation, centered around the human realm, linking the other five realms. By sacrificing five individuals with unique Fate Signs, using ressentment, demonic energy, and malevolent aura as the crucible, it will destroy the foundation of the Six Harmonies and the positions of the Eight Principles, causing the collapse of the Six Realms, leading to a new beginning for all beings.”

Si Lan had never heard of such a bizarre formation. He stared at the Five Star Nine Heavens Formation for a long moment before speaking.

“The five individuals with unique Fate Signs must be composed of people like Jiuying, Dayong, and Kui,” he deduced.

He looked at Tianmen Pass and Linglong Mountain. Currently, there were no anomalies there, indicating that the two individuals with unique Fate Signs had yet to appear.

Haowei hadn’t seen the visions Si Lan had seen earlier, but from Si Lan’s trance after falling into Mount Gushan and the conversation with Chiyu, he vaguely understood something, his expression turning serious.

He asked Chiyu Immortal, “Immortal, even if Yu Wuxia can activate the Five Star Nine Heavens Formation, why would Heaven allow him to act so recklessly?”

In Chiyu’s dark eye sockets, his eyeballs moved as he looked at Si Lan. “So Heaven has reversed time countless times, sending Junli’s reincarnation back, attempting to defy fate.” Chiyu was unaffected by the cycles of reincarnation, having experienced countless reversals of time and countless new worlds.

Si Lan realized that Heaven was indeed a seasoned scammer, deceiving him time and again.

“In that case, why doesn’t Heaven kill Yu Wuxia itself?” Si Lan asked.

Chiyu sighed slightly and said slowly, “Heaven cannot kill Yu Wuxia. While everyone knows Heaven has three sons, few know it actually has a fourth son: Chunfeng, Qiuyu, Dongshuang, and Xiaolei. Chunfeng takes a breath from Heaven, Qiuyu takes a tear, Dongshuang takes a sigh, and the fourth son, Xiaolei, embodies Heaven’s dark side.”

Si Lan and Haowei couldn’t help but hold their breath upon hearing this.

Beside them, Juzhu’s eyes widened in astonishment.

Chiyu’s words overturned their previous understanding of the Six Realms.

Chiyu continued, “This dark side was sealed by Heaven for tens of thousands of years. Later, it cultivated and took human form, indoctrinated by Heaven, arranging destinies of utmost goodness and sincerity, striving for virtue over hundreds of lifetimes. But unexpectedly, this dark side eventually chose the path of demonic evil.”

Si Lan suddenly understood why Yu Wuxia understood how to reconstruct the formation of the Six Realms; because he was the embodiment of Heaven’s dark side, he suddenly understood why Yu Wuxia was so confident in telling him everything in his dreams. If Heaven couldn’t handle him, what could they do?

Seeing Si Lan’s expression of helplessness, Chiyu explained, “Although Yu Wuxia comes from Heaven’s dark side, Heaven doesn’t know his weaknesses. Originally, Heaven hoped to find Yu Wuxia’s weaknesses through your repeated appearances and seal him away.”

Si Lan cursed Heaven in his heart for being so cunning.

He had undergone countless cycles of reincarnation, enduring suffering and torment, all to make Heaven discover the weaknesses in his dark side.

If Heaven had not fostered ill intentions first, how could there be a dark side? He knew very well what darkness lay in his heart. Now, it was causing turmoil across the Six Realms.

No wonder Fan Yu had chosen to resist Heaven even at the cost of his soul’s destruction. If Junli had known how shameless Heaven truly was back then, he might have joined forces with Fan Yu against it.

Si Lan silently mocked them in his heart.

Hearing this, Haowei’s facial muscles tightened, his breath deepening as he grasped Si Lan’s hand with added strength. Countless reversals of time by Heaven meant all previous attempts to defy fate had failed, and Si Lan had repeatedly perished at the hands of Yu Wuxia.

Eight hundred years since his ascension to God Emperor, Haowei had not experienced as much as Chiyu, nor had he been able to assist Si Lan. A rage welled up within him, directed at Yu Wuxia, Heaven, or perhaps himself for arriving too late and being unable to help Si Lan.

His expression darkened. ” Immortal, I want to know why we can’t seal Yu Wuxia.”

Chiyu sighed softly, tapped his fingertip, and the three-dimensional map of the Six Realms vanished, replaced by scenes from a past life.

In the vision, Si Lan was stabbed in the heart by Yu Wuxia’s sword and sealed in place, watching helplessly as the Five Star Nine Heavens Formation activated. When Si Lan finally broke free from the seal, he was already fatally wounded by the formation, dissolving into nothingness in an instant.

Chiyu explained, “The Five Star Nine Heavens Formation is activated using his own soul as the catalyst. Thus, without finding Yu Wuxia’s soul weakness, we cannot unravel the formation.”

Pausing, Chiyu continued, “You and I have discussed countless times in search of Yu Wuxia’s weakness, attempting to approach it through the seven aspects of greed, anger, ignorance, attachment, love, hatred, and desire, but all have failed.”

Si Lan was speechless, gazing at the image of Yu Wuxia. His brows furrowed involuntarily.

Yu Wuxia desired to establish a new world where there was only one species, achieving absolute equality in intelligence, talent, cultivation, and even emotions.

Si Lan didn’t know if this world would be beautiful, but he felt only a madman could conceive and carry out such a plan.

Chiyu added, “Heaven has always been dissatisfied with the Six Realms it created. Yu Wuxia inherited these dark thoughts, hence his desire to create a world of absolute fairness and freedom for all.”

Haowei glanced briefly at the scene of Si Lan being pierced by the sword and quickly looked away.

His mind roiled with anger, but he could only suppress his emotions by holding Si Lan’s hand.

Chiyu looked at Si Lan and said, “In your past life, you thought Yu Wuxia harbored resentment because Jia Heng Buddha replaced him in attaining enlightenment, considering it his weakness to exploit. But you were wrong. His obsession didn’t begin in that life.”

Si Lan turned to look at Hao Wei upon hearing the sound, suddenly remembering something serious. He had been engrossed in conversation with the Divine Sovereign just now, completely forgetting that he and Hao Wei were holding hands. In other words, they had been openly holding hands in front of the old Divine Sovereign all this time?

Si Lan’s face flushed red all of a sudden. He wanted to release Hao Wei’s hand, but Hao Wei had a strong grip. Si Lan struggled a few times but couldn’t break free. He didn’t want to make a scene, so he raised his head and pretended to smile calmly, “If that’s the case, then it’s good.”

Chiyu’s hood moved slightly, a nod in response.

Bringing up the matter of the “Divine Emperor,” Si Lan hesitated as he looked at Chiyu, then spoke, “Divine Sovereign, since you once served as the Divine Emperor, how did you end up in your current form?”

“The Divine Emperor transcended the cycles of reincarnation, no longer bound by worldly rules. Yet, the ultimate supremacy is akin to nothingness, it becomes the rule.” Saying this, the Divine Sovereign Chiyu’s eyes shifted towards Hao Wei, each word deliberate, “It will transform into an existence akin to the Heavenly Dao, for all things in this world, yet also nothingness in this world.”

Si Lan was momentarily stunned at this revelation. The fingers held by Hao Wei trembled slightly, revealing a hint of unease.

What did it mean to transform into an existence akin to the Heavenly Dao?

Could it be that Hao Wei would eventually become like the Divine Sovereign Chiyu, becoming a formless Heavenly Dao?

But wouldn’t that, from another perspective, be akin to a divine fall?

Chiyu, the Divine Sovereign, had lived for a hundred thousand years before achieving the level of Divine Emperor, yet fell within less than twenty thousand years. Meanwhile, Hao Wei inherited fifty thousand years of cultivation from Tai Wei and attained the level of Divine Emperor by the age of eight hundred.

Then… wouldn’t Hao Wei at most have a lifespan of only twenty thousand years?

Si Lan’s mood suddenly sank. He remained silent, while Hao Wei appeared remarkably calm, seeming to have asked all the questions he needed to.

However, before leaving, there was one more thing he wanted to clarify on Si Lan’s behalf.

“Divine Sovereign, do you still remember tens of thousands of years ago, before your seclusion, when you left behind the Divine Array to protect Princess Fang Yi of the Phoenix Clan?”

Chiyu seemed to recall something, his withered face showing a moment of silence before nodding.

“Yes.”

“Later, when Princess Fang Yi passed away, she passed the Divine Array to others of the Phoenix Clan. Now, it has been exploited by someone with ill intentions, turning it into a weapon of murder.”

Si Lan, hearing this, regained his senses and glanced at Hao Wei’s tense profile. He hadn’t expected that after hearing about the possibility of divine fall, Hao Wei remained completely composed, even assisting in asking questions for him.

Chiyu murmured, “Has Fang Yi died?”

“Yes, Princess Fang Yi has passed away for over ten thousand years.”

Juzhu, who had been unable to interject until now, hurriedly stepped forward, “Divine Sovereign, Princess Fang Yi was my great aunt. Now, this Divine Array follows her wishes and protects me.”

Chiyu slowly shifted his gaze to Juzhu, coldly saying each word, “Impossible. Fang Yi would never pass my Divine Array to others.” The Divine Array was a manifestation of Chiyu’s lingering obsession, guarding Fang Yi unconditionally, so Fang Yi could never have given his obsession to someone else.

Chapter 41

The name of the boy who greeted Zhan Weiguang was Xu Fengwen, a senior student in the same school as them. Before Zhan Weiguang graduated, they were both on the school basketball team.

Zhan Weiguang nodded at him and said, “It’s been a long time since we last met.”

Xu Fengwen smiled and asked, “Do you want to play basketball?”

       Zhan Weiguang said, “Yeah.”

Xu Fengwen pointed to a few companions behind him and said, “Do you want to join us? There are exactly six of us.”

Zhan Weiguang glanced at those people and said, “Forget it, I’m taking my brother to play.”

Xu Fengwen looked over, somewhat surprised. Because Zhan Weiyang had been hiding behind Pei Qing all this time, he only just now noticed that Zhan Weiyang was actually there. So, he smiled and said, “Alright then, you guys go ahead and play.”

After that, Xu Fengwen returned to the original court, and Xie Ling immediately turned his eyes away and continued to play basketball.

Zhan Xiusong was dribbling the ball. He was a little excited and kept urging everyone to hurry up.

Pei Qing felt Zhan Weiyang still holding his shirt tightly, so he turned around and asked, “Are we going to start?”

Zhan Weiyang said in a low voice, “Yes.”

Pei Qing said, “Then do you want to let me go first?”

Zhan Weiyang reluctantly released his fingers.

Pei Qing then told Zhan Xiusong and Zhan Weiguang, “I’ll be on the same team as Yangyang.”

Zhan Xiusong immediately said, “Okay, I’ll be on the same team as Guang ge!” He was mainly afraid that he would be on the same team as Zhan Weiyang.

Zhan Weiyang heard it and quickly said, “Okay, okay.”

Zhan Xiusong had never played basketball with Zhan Weiyang before. He approached Zhan Weiguang and whispered, “Do we need to hold back our strength later?”

Zhan Weiguang squatted down to tie his shoelaces tightly and looked at him, “What strength do you want to hold back?”

Zhan Xiusong said, “I’m afraid that if I bully Zhan Weiyang too much, he will go and complain to me again.”

Zhan Weiguang stood up and said, “When did he complain to you?”

Zhan Xiusong pursed his lips, “Hmph!”

Zhan Weiguang then said, “Don’t worry, you may not beat him.”

Zhan Xiusong didn’t believe it at all, “How is it possible!” He threw the basketball into the air with full momentum and said, “Come on!”

As it turned out, when the time finally came, Zhan Xiusong realised that Zhan Weiguang wasn’t just talking nonsense. Zhan Weiyang not only knew how to play basketball, but he was also very skilled at it.

Pei Qing was also very good at playing basketball, but he was not at all flashy, just like his personality. His movements were clean and neat, not fancy, but very practical.

The most terrifying thing was that he and Zhan Weiyang cooperated very well. Almost every time he got the ball, he would find an opportunity to pass it to Zhan Weiyang. Zhan Weiyang shot with a very accurate and light movement. Every time he scored a goal, he would look for Pei Qing with a smile and stubbornly clap hands with him to celebrate.

Facing such an opponent, even with Zhan Weiguang’s heroic efforts, Zhan Xiusong was still thoroughly defeated and left speechless.

And because he was fat, he was already out of breath after playing for more than ten minutes, and he couldn’t even run. In the end, he sat under the basketball stand and unscrewed the cap of a Coke bottle to drink water.

Zhan Weiguang stood by and said, “Why don’t you just forget it.”

Zhan Xiusong was not convinced and panted and said, “Wait for me to rest for a while, and then continue.”

At this time, three people left the opposite court, and the rest of the people stopped playing.

Xu Fengwen stood by their court, holding a basketball to watch the game.

Zhan Weiguang turned around and saw Xu Fengwen, who waved at him. He then looked down at Zhan Xiusong and said, “Why don’t you take a break on the side? I’ll call my former teammate to come over.”

Zhan Xiusong said, “No, I want to play!” He wiped the sweat off his face, “How about you call two people, we’ll play 3v3?”

At this moment, Pei Qing walked over to the basketball hoop, bent down to pick up a bottle of water. He then stood up straight, and twisted open the cap. Zhan Weiyang also walked over.

He reached out and handed the bottle of water to Zhan Weiyang first.

But he didn’t expect Zhan Weiyang to misunderstand his action. He didn’t reach out to take the bottle of water but directly opened his mouth, bit the bottle mouth, and then looked at Pei Qing and waited for Pei Qing to feed him.

Pei Qing paused and then had to tilt the bottom of the bottle slightly, slowly and carefully feeding the water into Zhan Weiyang’s mouth.

Zhan Weiyang tilted his head, and the pointed Adam’s apple on his white neck slid up the line with the swallowing action.

Pei Qing suddenly had some thoughts and calmly raised his arm slightly. Seeing that the bottle mouth was about to leave Zhan Weiyang’s lips, Zhan Weiyang quickly stood on tiptoe to reach it but still let some water flow out and slide down along his chin.

He quickly pushed away half a step, and Pei Qing also withdrew his hand.

Zhan Weiyang raised his arm, wiped the water off his face, and said, “Oh, it spilt.”

Pei Qing took back the water bottle, drank a sip with a careless look, and said, “Why are you so careless?”

Zhan Weiyang felt very embarrassed and said, “I’m sorry.”

Pei Qing put the bottle cap back, put the water bottle back under the basketball hoop, and walked towards the edge of the court. He saw Zhan Weiyang following him and whispered to him, “Next time, make sure to catch the water properly.”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded quickly, “Okay.”

Pei Qing raised his hand to hug his shoulders, couldn’t help but laugh softly, and said, “Silly Yangyang.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him, a little embarrassed, and lowered his head again.

When they didn’t notice, Xie Ling stopped by Xu Fengwen on a bicycle and talked to him.

Zhan Xiusong saw it and said to Zhan Weiguang, “Let’s ask them to come together.”

Zhan Weiguang hesitated a little but still walked towards Xu Fengwen and asked, “Are you leaving?”

Xu Fengwen’s tone seemed somewhat regretful, “They’re all done playing.”

Zhan Weiguang invited him and Xie Ling, “Do you want to join us?”

Before Xu Fengwen answered, Xie Ling suddenly asked, “Are you Zhan Weiyang’s brother?”

Zhan Weiguang looked at him and thought he was quite rude. After a moment of silence, he said, “Yes, you are?”

Xie Ling didn’t answer him but continued to ask, “I saw that he plays basketball very well.”

Zhan Weiguang’s tone became cold, “Yes, so? Want to give it a try?”

Xu Fengwen knew the personalities of both people and hurriedly tried to smooth things over, interrupting their conversation and asking Xie Ling, “Do you want to play for a while longer?”

       Xie Ling nodded.

Zhan Weiguang then turned to Pei Qing and the others and shouted, “Qing ge, my friend wants to join, can he?”

Before Pei Qing answered, Zhan Weiyang had already grabbed Pei Qing’s wrist tightly and said, “No.”

Zhan Xiusong stood up from under the basketball stand and said excitedly, “Yes, yes!”

Everyone was waiting for Pei Qing’s answer.

Pei Qing looked at Zhan Weiyang’s nervous expression and then at the hand he was holding. Because Zhan Weiyang was holding him too tightly, his knuckles were slightly white. He said to Zhan Weiguang, “Yangyang is not feeling well. Why don’t you four play? I’ll go over with him to rest for a while.”

Zhan Weiguang frowned and walked towards them. Seeing that Zhan Weiyang’s expression was indeed not good, he asked, “What’s wrong with you?”

Zhan Weiyang did not answer him.

Pei Qing said, “I’ll take him to the car to sit for a while.”

Zhan Weiguang looked at Zhan Weiyang for a long time, and when he was sure that he had no major health problems, he said, “Go ahead, call me if you need anything.”

Pei Qing patted Zhan Weiyang on the shoulder and said, “Let’s go.”

Zhan Weiyang hurriedly followed Pei Qing. His steps seemed flustered and hurried.

On this side, Zhan Weiguang walked back to Xu Fengwen and the others and said, “My brother is not feeling well. He and my older cousin left first, do you guys still want to play?”

Xu Fengwen said, “I’ll play.” After saying that, he looked at Xie Ling, as if he was unsure of his opinion.

Unexpectedly, Xie Ling said, “Okay, let’s go.”

Pei Qing returned to the car, opened all the windows, and opened a new bottle of water for Zhan Weiyang.

Zhan Weiyang held the bottle and drank it in small sips.

Pei Qing suddenly said, “Yangyang, do you remember when you first started school, you wrote a love letter to someone, but she threw it away?”

Zhan Weiyang looked pale and looked at him with some horror.

Pei Qing asked him, “Do you still like that person now?”

Chapter 9 – My peach blossom was thrown away.

Chapter 9 – My peach blossom was thrown away.

Rong Tang didn’t pay much attention to the peach blossom, only asking a nearby palace maid to take some water to keep the flower alive. To his surprise, the next day, a new peach blossom appeared outside his window.

The palace maid, Jin Ning, also found it odd. “Young Master, do you have any idea who sent these peach blossoms?”

Holding a book, Rong Tang didn’t even look up. “I don’t know.”

Jin Ning carefully changed the water for the wilted branch and suddenly said, “Could it be the Emperor?”

Since Rong Tang was forced into the palace, the Emperor had frequently sent gifts to the Drunken Scholar’s Studio—mostly gold, silver, and jade artifacts, antiques, and precious items, including some famous calligraphy and paintings, as well as rare books from the previous dynasty. Each gift was quite valuable. However, while the peach blossoms were lovely, they were worthless, unlike something the Emperor would typically send.

Rong Tang replied indifferently, “It’s not.”

“Then it might be one of the palace maids from another palace,” Jin Ning said with a smile, “Young Master, since you’re so handsome, there are often some curious young palace maids who come to the Drunken Scholar’s Studio to take a peek at you!”

Rong Tang didn’t say anything more. After nightfall, he stayed in the study, reading instead of returning to his room. The study faced his bedroom, and by opening the window, he could see any movement outside his bedroom.

At the lights-out time, when all the palace maids and eunuchs had gone to bed, a figure sneaked in through the side door of the Drunken Scholar’s Studio, holding something and heading straight for his bedroom.

Rong Tang: “…”

Zhao Qi, as an Emperor, found it quite challenging to sneak into his lover’s quarters like a thief, his heart racing at 180 beats per minute. Fortunately, everything went smoothly. He placed the peach blossoms in front of the window and had just turned around when a voice came from behind him: “Ahem—”

“!!!”

Startled, Zhao Qi jumped towards the wall like a rabbit, grabbing a “weapon” in his hand and turning swiftly to point the peach blossom branch at the intruder. “Who is it?!”

Rong Tang looked at the tips of the flower petals and frowned slightly. “It’s really you.”

Seeing who it was, Zhao Qi felt even more tense and did not relax. He maintained a stern face and tried to stay calm. “I was just passing by. I didn’t intend to visit you. Don’t think too much about it.”

Rong Tang asked, “Was the peach blossom from a couple of days ago also from you?”

Zhao Qi lowered the peach blossom branch. “…Yes.” Although the previous blossoms had been delivered by a eunuch, Zhao Qi himself had brought these after having supper at the Cian Palace with Empress Dowager Wen. On his way back to his own quarters, he had stopped by the Drunken Scholar’s Studio to personally deliver the flowers as a gesture of sincerity.

Rong Tang’s eyes grew somber. Was the Emperor really sneaking around to deliver a peach blossom so late at night? Or was there another motive?

“Why?”

Zhao Qi asked, “Huh?”

Rong Tang’s expression remained indifferent. “Why did you send me the peach blossoms?”

Zhao Qi scratched his head. “Just… hoping you get better soon, like these blooming peach blossoms, full of vitality.”

“Vitality…” Rong Tang’s eyes were cold and lifeless. His vitality had dissipated the day he entered the harem, leaving behind only a shell. Born into a scholarly family and having achieved high honors, he should have been serving on the court. Yet now, he was trapped behind the high red walls, reduced to serving the Emperor in name. His family was unable to hold their head high in the capital because of him, and his father and uncles were mocked by their peers. All of this was thanks to the person before him.

Zhao Qi looked at Rong Tang anxiously. The moonlight was beautiful but cold tonight, and Rong Tang was even colder.

“I appreciate your kindness, Your Majesty,” Rong Tang said. “You may leave now.”

Zhao Qi could see the despair in Rong Tang’s eyes and felt despair himself. This was all due to the original owner’s actions—what could he do?

“Well, do you still want the peach blossoms?” Zhao Qi asked.

Rong Tang did not answer, turning and walking into his room, closing the door and window in front of Zhao Qi.

Holding the discarded peach blossoms, Zhao Qi comforted himself: It’s fine if you don’t want them; I’ll keep them for making peach blossom wine.

Rong Tang caught a chill from the evening breeze and started developing a fever and cough the next day. Jin Ning prepared some medicine and brought it to him. “Young Master, should we call a physician to check on you?”

“No need.” Rong Tang coughed lightly. “Throw away the peach blossoms.”

Jin Ning thought she might have heard wrong. “Young Master?”

“Just throw away all the peach blossoms we’ve received these days.”

The day before setting off for Muliang Mountain, Zhao Qi decided to indulge in some meat. He asked Jiang Dehai to bring a full set of barbecue tools and had the Imperial Kitchen send over chicken, duck, fish, and meat. He skewered the items and roasted them over charcoal.

Jiang Dehai watched nervously from the side. “Your Majesty, let us do it. Be careful not to burn yourself.”

“Meat that isn’t grilled by yourself lacks soul,” Zhao Qi said, brushing oil on the chicken wings with a calligraphy brush. “This brush isn’t good for writing but works well for barbecue.”

Jiang Dehai forced a smile. “Your Majesty, these are tributes from Luozhou.”

“No wonder. I’ll make sure to give Luozhou’s governor a good review.”

As the delicious aroma of roasting meat filled the air, Zhao Qi hummed a tune while grilling. “Braised chicken wings, I like to eat them. The more I want to ascend, the more I should eat. If I don’t eat now, I won’t have another chance…”

A little eunuch came in to report, “Your Majesty, General He requests an audience.”

“Oh? Please, have him come in!”

He Changzhou, dressed in military uniform and still full of energy, entered the Yonghua Palace. Seeing Zhao Qi sitting by the charcoal fire with his sleeves rolled up, exposing his white and slender wrists, one hand holding skewers of chicken wings and the other holding a calligraphy brush, he smiled and said, “General He has arrived.”

He Changzhou laughed and replied, “Your Majesty, just call me by my name.”

Zhao Qi wasn’t being polite either, “Changzhou, do you like eating chicken wings?”

He Changzhou replied, “Yes, I do. When I was stationed in the northwest, I often caught wild chickens and roasted them.”

“Wild game isn’t as good as farmed ones. Aren’t they more delicious?” Zhao Qi handed the freshly roasted chicken wings to He Changzhou, “Here, try my cooking.”

He Changzhou took them, had a bite, and exclaimed, “Hot—”

Zhao Qi laughed, “Of course, it’s hot right after being roasted.”

He Changzhou held the chicken wing up to Zhao Qi, “Your Majesty, could you blow on it for me?”

Zhao Qi puffed out his cheeks and blew on the fragrant chicken wings a few times, “Try it again.”

He Changzhou ate the chicken wings one by one. After chewing for a while, he spat out the clean bones, with not a trace of meat left on them. Zhao Qi looked at him with an expression as if he had swallowed an egg whole.

He Changzhou laughed at Zhao Qi’s comical expression and stuffed a chicken wing into his mouth, “Your Majesty should have some too.”

Zhao Qi tried to mimic He Changzhou but after a lot of effort, his bones were left incomplete and the meat wasn’t cleaned off properly. He couldn’t help but sigh, “Your skills with your mouth are really impressive.”

After finishing the chicken wings, Zhao Qi and He Changzhou sat together roasting duck legs. Zhao Qi suddenly felt a bit of an itch in his nose, turned his head, and sneezed loudly. He pinched the tip of his nose and muttered, “Who’s cursing me…”

Jiang Dehai came over with a cloak and urged him to put it on, “Your Majesty, take care of your health. This cloak…”

“No need, no need,” Zhao Qi said, “Wearing the dragon robe is already very inconvenient. The sleeves are so wide and big. How can I roast duck with a cloak on?”

He Changzhou glanced at Zhao Qi’s exposed wrist, “Let me have a look.”

Zhao Qi felt a warmth as He Changzhou gently held his wrist, “It is a bit cold. Your Majesty should lower your sleeves.”

Due to his years spent outside, He Changzhou’s skin was not as fair as Zhao Qi’s, and their hands together showed a stark contrast. Zhao Qi envied, “Your skin is really nice.”

He Changzhou snorted, “Your Majesty is the one with the fair and tender skin.”

Zhao Qi shook his finger, “A grown man doesn’t need to be so fair and tender. It’s quite girly.”

He Changzhou’s hand moved up to Zhao Qi’s elbow, pulling his rolled-up sleeve down, “I’ll help Your Majesty roast the duck.”

Zhao Qi didn’t insist further and sat aside watching He Changzhou roast. Jiang Dehai dr4p3d the cloak over him and asked, “Your Majesty, are you still sending the peach blossoms from the Drunken Scholar’s Study today?”

Without thinking, Zhao Qi said, “If he doesn’t want them, why send them?”

Jiang Dehai hesitated, “Yes.”

Zhao Qi glanced at him, “If you have something to say, just say it.”

“Your Majesty, I heard from the palace maid at the Drunken Scholar’s Study that this morning, Young Master Rong threw away all the peach blossoms you sent him these past few days.”

Zhao Qi showed no reaction, “So he threw them away. It’s not like I can retrieve them.”

Jiang Dehai said, “Your Majesty, it’s not appropriate to casually dispose of imperial gifts. Even death could be considered an appropriate punishment.”

Zhao Qi blinked, “What’s the use of saying this? I can’t bring myself to kill him.”

Jiang Dehai sighed, “Yes.”

He Changzhou, overhearing, laughed, “This is probably what people in the palace refer to as ‘arrogant due to favor’?”

That night, at the Xiang residence.

Xiao Shiqing was drinking alone in the courtyard, under the moonlight. Hearing footsteps behind him, he said, “You’re here.”

The newcomer didn’t offer any formal greetings, simply sitting across from him and pouring himself a cup of wine, which he drank in one gulp. “The wine at the Xiang residence is indeed better than that in the palace.”

Xiao Shiqing chuckled, “General He, are you implying that I am overstepping my bounds?”

“Does the Prime Minister fear such words?”

Xiao Shiqing did not respond directly, “What about Zhao Qi?”

He Changzhou pondered for a moment and said, “The chicken wings he cooked were very tasty.”

Xiao Shiqing put down his wine cup and said slowly, “I didn’t ask you to indulge in food and drink in the palace.”

“I know, but that doesn’t conflict with it,” He Changzhou replied. “To be honest, I can’t imagine that Zhao Qi now is the same person as the debauched emperor he used to be.”

Xiao Shiqing nodded slightly, “I feel the same.”

“What could cause such a sudden change in a person’s nature?”

Xiao Shiqing smiled, “Could it really be about the dragon veins?”

He Changzhou asked curiously, “What dragon veins?”

Xiao Shiqing did not answer the question, “The old Zhao Qi was outrageous, but he was easy to handle. The current Zhao Qi, I truly cannot fathom what he is thinking.”

He Changzhou recalled the image of Zhao Qi brushing oil on chicken wings with a calligraphy brush and said, “In my opinion, the current Zhao Qi seems to be even more straightforward than before.”

“Not necessarily,” Xiao Shiqing mused for a moment. “Continue staying by his side. Report any discoveries immediately.”

He Changzhou nodded and yawned, “Got it.”

Xiao Shiqing glanced at him, “You seemed reluctant before, but this time you agreed quite readily.”

He Changzhou smiled, “Doesn’t the Prime Minister find the current Zhao Qi rather charming?”

Xiao Shiqing inexplicably recalled the scene of the young emperor, drunk and clinging to his arm, tearfully saying he didn’t want to die. He took a sip of his drink and said, “Not really.”

Chapter 22 – A Light Kiss

Chapter 22: A Light Kiss

Despite feeling aggrieved, the little black dragon kept its mouth shut, showing no intention of making a sound.

Su Muluo looked at the small dragon, feeling it was being deliberately obtuse, relying on the fact that he couldn’t do anything about it. How detestable.

If you have the guts, just never turn into a human again!

Thinking this, Su Muluo patted the little black dragon’s head.

After a while, drowsiness swept over him again. He pulled the quilt over himself and lay back down on the bed.

The little black dragon made a soft sound, “Ao?”

Going to sleep again?

“I’m sleepy,” Su Muluo said. “It must be because you passed some bad stuff to me.”

The little black dragon silently accepted the blame, grew larger again, and wrapped around its phoenix.

Su Muluo, with his eyes half-closed and feeling too tired to move, lazily pushed it away, “Don’t take advantage of me.”

The black dragon pretended not to hear.

When its phoenix was sleepy, it would become soft and adorable, allowing it to be intimately entwined. Even if it went a bit too far, it was fine.

It loved its phoenix the most.

Thinking this, the black dragon happily buried its head in the crook of its phoenix’s shoulder.

Su Muluo lazily let it entwine him. After a few minutes, he grumbled a bit, “You’re cold.”

When the black dragon grew larger, its body was covered with cold scales. It wasn’t so bad when the temperature wasn’t too low, but now it felt a bit chilly.

Hearing this, the black dragon paused for a second, then pulled the quilt over Su Muluo, “Ao.”

Su Muluo gently tugged the corner of the quilt, burying half his face into the soft pillow and closed his eyes.

The black dragon watched its phoenix fall asleep in its embrace and nuzzled him affectionately.

In doing so, it knocked off a feather.

The black dragon: “…”

Su Muluo had already fallen asleep and didn’t notice. The black dragon quietly picked up the feather and gently wrapped itself around its phoenix again.

Its phoenix had indeed been a bit off lately.

The black dragon thought.

It decided to observe for another day, and if there was no improvement, then it would…

Holding this thought, the black dragon gently rested its head against Su Muluo’s, guarding its phoenix quietly throughout the night.

Su Muluo had a very restful sleep and felt much less drowsy when he woke up.

Opening his eyes, he found himself staring into the dark golden eyes of the black dragon. Feeling good, he petted its head.

The black dragon nuzzled into his palm affectionately. Su Muluo then got up and saw a white feather beside his pillow.

“…”

He picked up the feather silently and glanced at the black dragon beside him.

The black dragon instantly shrunk to a tiny size, hugging its tail tightly and let out a soft cry, “Ao.”

It wasn’t me who knocked it off!

Su Muluo: “Doesn’t matter, I blame you.”

Despite his words, he didn’t do anything to the little black dragon and instead sighed softly, putting the feather away.

Over the recent period, he had already lost six feathers, more than he had lost in the past few hundred years combined. Though he tried to console himself that it was just molting season and new feathers would grow back, he still felt a bit unhappy.

The little black dragon noticed his unhappiness and rolled in his hand, nudging his fingers with its small, soft horns.

Su Muluo rubbed the little black dragon’s head, checked his phone, and saw it was time to go to the café. He got up to wash and get ready.

Recently, the temperature had dropped sharply, showing signs of winter approaching. It even rained last night, bringing a chill wind down the street. Su Muluo, dressed in a soft, light-colored trench coat, held the warm little black dragon in his hands.

Because of the cold weather, Qiansui didn’t want to go out either. When Su Muluo arrived at the café, he saw it sitting at the entrance with a few well-behaved stray cats behind it.

After a few seconds of staring at each other, Su Muluo said, “Are these your friends?”

Qiansui: “Meow.”

Su Muluo chuckled and said, “Let them in then.”

So, a group of cats lined up and entered the café, with Su Muluo giving each of them a can of cat food.

While the cats were burying their heads in the cat food, Qiansui watched them from the side. When they finished eating, it meowed and led them into the staff lounge.

At first, Su Muluo didn’t pay much attention, thinking Qiansui just wanted to play with its friends there. But when the sounds of cats meowing continuously and intensely came from inside, he realized something was wrong.

A group of cats gathered in one room, meowing so loudly; could it be that Qiansui was…

His heart skipped a beat, and he quickly walked over and pushed open the lounge door.

Inside the lounge, the bathroom door was open, and a boy was squatting inside, trying hard to push a few frantically screaming cats into a foam-filled bathtub.

Su Muluo: “…”

The boy looked no older than eighteen, with a very delicate appearance and green eyes—it was Qiansui in human form.

Noticing someone outside, Qiansui looked up, expressionless, and gazed at Su Muluo.

“What?” he asked. “Do you need something?”

Su Muluo: “I thought you were molesting the cats.”

Qiansui: “???”

Qiansui’s eyes widened in anger. Just as he was about to say something, he saw the little black dragon poking its head out of Su Muluo’s pocket. He swallowed his words and calmly said, “No, I’m giving them a bath.”

Then he added, “I’ll clean up afterward.”

Su Muluo, finding his suppressed anger amusing, said, “Alright, I won’t disturb you then.”

He then closed the door and left.

Although the weather was very cold today, many customers still came to the café. They sat with their warm coffee, chatting leisurely, creating a very pleasant atmosphere.

After a while, a customer walked in. It was a young man with earrings who had been coming in frequently these days. As soon as Su Muluo saw him, he put the little black dragon into his pocket, hiding it from view.

With the air conditioning on, the young man sighed in relief as he entered. “So warm. Boss, one special coffee.”

He handed Su Muluo some cash and habitually glanced at Su Muluo’s hands, looking for the toy loach from the other day.

Of course, Su Muluo wasn’t going to show it to him and calmly met his gaze. After a few seconds, the young man awkwardly coughed and went to find a seat.

Meanwhile, the door to the staff lounge opened, and an orange cat led a few freshly washed cats out.

These cute cats immediately caught the attention of the other café customers, who wanted to play with them. For a moment, the café was filled with soft meows, making Su Muluo wonder if he had opened a pet store instead.

As the customers played with the cats, Qiansui jumped onto the bar counter, looking down at them coldly from his vantage point.

Su Muluo felt its gaze was oddly similar to that of a mother-in-law scrutinizing her son-in-law. Because of this, he guessed the reason why it brought these stray cats here.

With the weather turning cold, it would be tough for these cats to survive the winter. If someone was willing to adopt them, their lives would be much easier.

Hearing all the meowing in the café, the little black dragon thought its phoenix had other cats outside and angrily poked its head out, letting out a cry, “Ao!”

Where are these meows coming from?

Su Muluo poked it, “I didn’t touch them, you little jealous creature.”

The little black dragon looked around warily, making sure there were no other cats around its phoenix, then grabbed onto Su Muluo’s sleeve, trying to climb into his hand.

Qiansui silently moved aside, keeping a distance that would allow it to escape at any moment. Su Muluo glanced at it and said, “If you have other friends, you can bring them over. Just don’t be too noisy at night, or we’ll get complaints.”

Qiansui was silent for a few seconds before saying a small “Thank you.”

As they talked, Su Muluo noticed a black cat sitting alone among the group. Whether it was because it was missing half an ear or its entirely black fur, it wasn’t as popular as its companions, sitting quietly and watching the others.

At that moment, a hand tentatively reached out to it—it was the young man with the earrings.

The black cat looked up at him for a few seconds, then leaned in and nuzzled his palm.

The young man, eyes wide with delight, tried to pick it up. But before he could fully extend his hand, the black cat jumped into his arms.

“…”

A few minutes later, the young man excited

ly approached the bar with the black cat in his arms.

“Boss, can I adopt this cat?” he asked. “I feel like we have a special connection!”

Su Muluo glanced at Qiansui, who was also observing the young man.

### Chapter 22: A Light Kiss

There was a sound.

So, Su Muluo spoke on its behalf, “Is it willing to go with you?”

The young man looked down at the black cat, which obediently lay in his arms and meowed at Qiansui.

“It called out!” The young man was even more excited, “Boss, look! It wants to go!”

Su Muluo glanced at Qiansui, seeing it had no objections, he said, “Alright, remember to take good care of it, or you might be watched.”

At first, the young man didn’t understand Su Muluo’s words, thinking he was joking. But as he was about to leave, he inadvertently met the gaze of the nearby orange cat and shivered.

That look, why does it seem like that of a mafia boss?

Muttering to himself, the young man lovingly petted the black cat in his arms and left.

By the end of the day, most of the cats Qiansui brought had been taken by the café’s customers. Su Muluo noticed that as those customers left, Qiansui marked them, probably planning to visit their homes later to check if they were treating the cats well.

At seven in the evening, Qiansui was curled up with the remaining two cats, eating cat food. Su Muluo, feeling a bit sleepy, said to it, “You close the door later. Don’t go out tonight.”

Qiansui paused its eating and looked up, “Every time you say that, something happens.”

Su Muluo smiled slightly, “Don’t worry, it’s not aimed at you.”

Then he put on his coat and walked out.

The night was colder than the day, with a cold wind sweeping through the streets, people hurrying along wrapped in their clothes.

Su Muluo walked slowly down the street, a warm little dragon wrapped around his wrist. As before, he walked from the bustling city center to a deserted street and stopped there.

The street lamps cast a dim light, and three figures silently appeared.

They wore black hoodies, their faces hidden in the hoods, making it impossible to see their features. However, Su Muluo immediately recognized their true forms—they were three bird demons.

Bird demons… which meant they were from the bird tribe.

Su Muluo thought of the bird tribe elder he had seen at the Bureau of the Otherworldly and said, “Is there something you need?”

The three bird demons stood silently, none responding.

Su Muluo lowered his eyes slightly, feeling very sleepy.

Then he said blandly, “If there’s nothing, I’ll be leaving.”

As he turned to leave, the three bird demons suddenly moved.

Wings sprouted from their backs, and they rushed towards Su Muluo at great speed—only to be instantly knocked back.

Three figures crashed heavily to the ground, cries of pain ringing out. Su Muluo stood under the streetlamp, looking at them with no emotion.

“I don’t know you, and I don’t want to know your intentions,” he said. “Get lost.”

The three grimaced, looking up to see the extremely beautiful young man standing under the cold moonlight, his ink-colored eyes cold and emotionless.

… This person’s power was unfathomable, and his nature was cold and ruthless, not someone to be provoked.

The three bird demons exchanged glances, turned into three differently colored birds, and quickly flew away.

In reality, they didn’t know that Su Muluo was simply exhausted, feeling he would fall asleep at any moment. So, he kept a stern face, not wanting to deal with them.

After the bird demons left, the area fell silent. Su Muluo took the little black dragon in his hands, intending to fly back, but suddenly stumbled and had to hold onto a nearby streetlamp.

The little black dragon’s dark golden eyes narrowed, “Roar?”

“Nothing…” Su Muluo steadied himself, his long eyelashes drooping, eyes dark and unclear, as if holding an indissolvable ink, “I’m just a bit sleepy… want to sleep.”

Drowsiness surged like a dense tide, irresistible. His vision began to blur, and he wanted to comfort the little black dragon’s anxious cries… but the words never came out.

The phoenix lost consciousness, falling into the arms of a man the next moment.

He was a man with black hair and black clothes, his features handsome and deep, with unique dark golden eyes.

His strong arms wrapped around Su Muluo’s waist, effortlessly holding the phoenix. His beautiful brows furrowed slightly, his gaze dark, staring unblinkingly at his phoenix.

Su Muluo lay heavily on his shoulder, feeling cold, and unconsciously clutched at his clothes.

The man: “…”

The man lowered his head slightly, affectionately brushing his forehead against Su Muluo’s, placing a light kiss between his brows, and quickly left.
