Chapter 18 – Gu Lizhou Hooked His Finger, And Zhong Weishi Walked Over

The little kid also wants to save face, so Gu Lizhou accepted the offer of an annual subscription to watch the performance.

Thus, the two empty nesters in Room 303 gained an additional entertainment activity before dinner each day.

Fearing they’d get bored of watching flips, Zhong Weishi added a variety of commercial performances, including Wing Chun,1Lit. Singing Spring Boxing. It is a concept-based martial art, a form of Southern Chinese kung fu, and a close-quarters system of self-defense. It is a martial arts style characterized by its focus on close-quarters hand-to-hand combat, rapid-fire punches, and straightforward efficiency. yo-yo, playing with diabolo,2Diabolo or also known as Chinese yo-yo. This object is spun using a string attached to two hand sticks (“batons” or “wands”). spinning top, and the Thomas Flair…

Thanks to him, Gu Lizhou even dreamed at night about sitting in the corridor watching someone play with diabolo.

Beside him, an old man fanned himself with a palm-leaf fan.

Although everything besides the flips and martial arts was so terrible that it made you want to throw rotten eggs, Gu Lizhou still gave face and clapped, “Good—”

Zhong Weishi tugged at his clothes and turned around, smiling at him.

The boy’s eyes curved into two small crescent moons, and the arc of his smile was contagious.

This smile…

The dream ended.

Gu Lizhou stared at the ceiling for a while, then got up to change clothes.

“Hey, Old Gu, you’re up ah. Help me send those two boxes on the table to the film crew later,” Cao Zhiheng said as he packed his things. “My dad’s been complaining about stomach discomfort these past few days, so I’m taking him for a gastroscopy to see what’s going on.”

“Oh, is he alright?”

“He’s fine when he eats and drinks, just has occasional dull pain. I’m guessing it’s gastritis.”

En, do a checkup to rest assured.”

Gu Lizhou glanced at the things on the table. They were already packed in a cardboard box, with a sticky note indicating the address and recipient.

Next to it was a temporary staff card, probably something needed to enter the film set.

“Have you been to the Film and Television City before? It’s pretty big. The ‘Capital City’ crew is over in Area A. Anyway, once you’re inside, you’ll see signs, and if worse comes to worst, just ask someone,” Cao Zhiheng said as he bent down to tie his shoelaces.

“I’m not retarded.” Gu Lizhou said.

Cao Zhiheng chuckled, “I’m just worried you’ll get lost. You absolutely have to deliver it before noon ah. They need it tonight, the props team will start setting the scene this afternoon.”

En,” Gu Lizhou nodded. “Mission guaranteed.”

When Cao Zhiheng left, he took the car with him. As Gu Lizhou was having breakfast downstairs, he called for a Didi,3Brand of taxis you can call in advance, similar to Uber. and just as he put down his chopsticks, the car arrived on time.

The driver, a man wearing sunglasses, complained even before he got in, “Aiyo, this area’s full of potholes. The road’s really not good to drive on.”

It was currently the rainy season, and it rained continuously for several days in Yucheng. The Xicheng District looked like a post-apocalyptic wasteland, too miserable to see.

Today, the weather finally cleared up, and the air was filled with the fresh scent of damp grass. However, the roads were still slick, and mud had splattered on Gu Lizhou’s sneakers.

It was the same in the Film and Television City.

Private cars weren’t allowed inside, so Gu Lizhou had to sit by the roadside, holding the two large boxes, and make a phone call.

Across from him was a huge set resembling the streets of old Shanghai, where a film crew was shooting. A group of extras was holding protest banners and shouting loudly.

Even though he was separated from the crew by dozens of meters, he was still moved by the intense atmosphere.

He wasn’t sure if it was just his imagination, but the boy at the front of the crowd looked a bit familiar in profile.

“Bang, bang, bang—” Several gunshots rang out.

The boy’s knees went weak, and he collapsed onto the ground, his face hitting the muddy surface without any cushion.

Gu Lizhou’s heart tightened.

There was no protective on the ground, and the shot was done in one smooth take.

It looked painful just watching it.

The boy quickly got up, wiped his face, and moved aside.

Suddenly, a man wearing the exact same outfit as the boy appeared in front of the camera.

Surrounded by a group of staff members adjusting his clothes, this person knelt down on the ground.

After the second “action,” that golden face slowly fell toward the ground.

The camera lingered on a long close-up of his face.

When the director called “cut,” everyone cheered, and two makeup artists ran over to clean the lead actor’s face from the mud.

Gu Lizhou’s gaze followed the little stand-in among the crowd, watching him sit alone in a corner, scrubbing his face with bottled water.

Gu Lizhou looked up at the cloudless sky and inexplicably let out a sigh.

The entertainment industry really is cruel.

In fact, every circle is cruel.

There are only a few opportunities.

The rest can only continue to work hard in places where others can’t see.

After a series of five or six phone calls, someone from the film crew finally picked up.

“Sorry ah, we were busy just now. My phone was on silent, so I didn’t hear it. Where are you? I’ll come over and get it.”

Gu Lizhou gave his location, and as soon as he put down the phone, he saw a flamboyant figure leaning on a railing across the street, waving at him.

The scorching sunlight poured down, reddening the boy’s cheeks, and even the strands of his hair gleamed with light.

Droplets of water ran down his chin, slipping into his collar. The outfit, identical to the lead actor’s, accentuated his tall, slender figure.

That smile—it perfectly overlapped with the one Gu Lizhou had seen in his dream that morning.

Zhong Weishi raised both hands above his head, waving them back and forth, still holding the protest flag.

Because the crew had set up barricades for the shoot, he could only stand ten meters away and watch. When their eyes met, Zhong Weishi was unexpectedly enthusiastic.

“Are you here to watch me film!”

“…” It seemed like the retard’s problem couldn’t be changed.

Gu Lizhou let out a laugh. He walked over at a leisurely pace. “Yeah, are you the stand-in for the lead today?”

“Ah, I’m the stand-in for the second male lead,” Zhong Weishi, seeing someone he knew for the first time on set, was a bit excited, though not dumb enough to think Gu Lizhou actually came to watch him act. “What brings you here?”

Gu Lizhou pointed with his finger. “Helping a friend deliver some stuff to the crew. That was you up front earlier ah?”

En.” Zhong Weishi nodded and smiled, showing no embarrassment despite his minor role. He shook the water from his hair. “One take! Handsome, right!”

“Handsome.”

Gu Lizhou noticed that Zhong Weishi had a small scr4p3 on his temple. He pulled out a semi-transparent band-aid from his wallet and handed it over. “Need one?”

Zhong Weishi wanted to say he couldn’t put it on yet since he had several more scenes to shoot, but his right hand instinctively reached out to take it. “Thanks ah, you’re just in time.”

Gu Lizhou smiled slightly, “You’re welcome.”

Hearing the assistant director calling for people, Zhong Weishi quickly dropped a “See you later!” before rushing off, as energetic as a young cheetah.

In a trance, Gu Lizhou seemed to see a reflection of his younger self in Zhong Weishi.

The sun overhead grew more intense.

Gu Lizhou lit a cigarette, squinting slightly as he watched that figure running tirelessly.

Many of the actors had messy hair and makeup, but Zhong Weishi’s long, agile limbs and energetic presence, along with his striking appearance, made him stand out in the crowd.

One scene was a gunfight, and the little cannon fodder played by Zhong Weishigets shot and fell directly from the second floor, landing on a dirty cushion.

When he got up, he held his lower back and kept rubbing it.

It looked like it hurt.

Gu Lizhou suddenly recalled Zhong Weishi’s embarrassed expression when he returned the new clothes to him.

“These clothes… I feel like I don’t really need to wear something so nice…”

He had really wanted to say at the time: ‘They definitely suit you.’

Unfortunately, he never saw him wear that T-shirt again.

Later that afternoon, Gu Lizhou received a call from the police station, informing him that Zhang Gou had been caught, but since they couldn’t reach Li Yuqin, they needed him to come down to the station for further details.

That visit ended up taking several hours.

Back at 303, Gu Lizhou was exhausted, collapsing onto his bed like a dead dog. He closed his eyes and let out a sigh.

Zhang Gou had confessed to his fraudulent activities, but he had spent all the money he scammed on anchor rewards and his remaining assets only added up to not more than 5,000 yuan.

Zhang Gou, an orphan since childhood with a low level of education, was a typical example of someone who lacked discipline and was greedy for money and lustful.

When the police entered the room, they were almost knocked out by the stench inside. Zhang Gou was in the middle of a heated chat with a female anchor on a video site. She was halfway through a sultry dance when the police cut the video.

“I really don’t have any money! Just shut it down. Anyway, I’m just one person. I don’t need to feed anyone else! It doesn’t matter where I stay. But seriously, I have no money left!”

Gu Lizhou had to say “murder is against the law” countless times before he could suppress the urge to strangle him on the spot.

300,000 yuan wasn’t a small amount of money. His mom would be devastated once she found out that none of it could be recovered.

She was the kind of person who would rather hide and cry in private than confide in others. She might even fall into depression over this.

They have to find a way to return the money to her.

He absentmindedly fiddled with the buttons on the remote control, his thoughts in disarray.

The money itself wasn’t the issue; the problem was how to return it.

It would be best to have someone else pretend to be a police officer and pass it on behalf of her.

Just then, another short knock sounded outside the door.

“Anyone home?”

“Wanna watch me do some Cat’s Cradle4It is a game involving the creation of various string figures between the fingers, either individually or by passing a loop of string back and forth between two or more players. ah?”

Gu Lizhou’s eyes curved into a smile, and his entire body seemed to come alive. “Sure!”

Zhong Weishi had been excited at first when he heard Zhang Gou was arrested, but when he learned the 300,000 yuan was gone, his expression immediately darkened.

“Do you know which streamer he rewarded?”

“Why, are you thinking of getting the money back from her ah?”

“Try and see.”

“The police already contacted her. Not long after the call, she deleted her account. She’s from out of town, thousands of miles away. Where would you even begin to look?”

Zhong Weishi was deeply disappointed, but after hearing Gu Lizhou’s plan, his eyes widened in disbelief. “You want me to impersonate a police officer to deceive someone ah? Isn’t that illegal!”

Gu Lizhou let out a ‘yo’, “So you actually know what the word ‘illegal’ means ah?”

“Of course. Last time, I swore to the heavens at the police station that I wouldn’t do bad things anymore. I’m not going.” Zhong Weishi said.

Gu Lizhou said, “You’re delivering money, not scamming people. It’s not illegal—it’s basically just cosplay. Besides, isn’t that your thing anyway?”

Zhong Weishi shot him a glance. “I’ve got a proper job.”

Gu Lizhou remained unbothered. “I’ll give you 200.”

“My appearance fee is 300 per job,” Zhong Weishi said, standing firm.

“Don’t push your luck ah.”

“500.”

“Despicable.”

“800!”

“….” Gu Lizhou gritted his teeth, barely holding back the word ‘shameless’ out of his throat.

After receiving his advance payment, Zhong Weishi was overjoyed, doing several fancy flips from room 303 all the way to the end of the corridor.

Gu Lizhou couldn’t fathom where someone could find so much energy to burn. He felt tired just lying around all day.

Ah, youth.

When Zhong Weishi flipped back, his head was drenched in sweat, and the band-aid on his temple was soaked, barely sticking to his skin.

Gu Lizhou felt uncomfortable just looking at it and hooked his finger.

Zhong Weishi walked over. “What’s up ah?”

When Gu Lizhou raised his arm, Zhong Weishi instinctively flinched back. “What are you doing?”

“Don’t move.”

Gu Lizhou peeled off the band-aid on Zhong Weishi’s temple and replaced it with a new one.

His fingertips were slightly cool, with a faint smell of smoke.

His action was unexpectedly gentle.

Zhong Weishi felt a bit dazed.

It was the first time in his life someone had ever put a band-aid on him, and it was a guy!

The proximity was so close, the atmosphere was hard to define whether it was strange or ambiguous. In short, it was subtle…

It made one unconsciously hold their breath.

He even thought, somewhat inappropriately: If this were a scene in a TV drama, the next step would probably be a kiss!

“Work is so exhausting, and you get hurt so easily. Have you thought about switching jobs?” Gu Lizhou’s voice was soft, like sunlight, delicate and gentle.

“I just like filming.”

Zhong Weishi looked up, meeting Gu Lizhou’s deep, dark eyes. He even noticed a tiny mole hidden beneath his eyebrow.

Alright, this was definitely fvcking ambiguous!

Gu Lizhou had double eyelids too, but it was unlike Zhong Weishi’s slightly drooping, peach-blossom eyes.

His eyes were narrow, long and slightly hooded, giving off a lazy and nonchalant vibe, always making him seem like he hadn’t fully woken up. But once he was fully awake… you’d realize his gaze was sincere and focused, as if he could see through every little thought.

Just like now.

Zhong Weishi blinked nervously a couple of times and quickly looked away.

“Your health is the most important.” Gu Lizhou smoothed out the band-aid and flicked Zhong Weishi’s forehead with his index finger. “All done.”

Zhong Weishi let out an ‘ow’, rubbed his forehead, and then touched the band-aid. After thanking him, he turned and left without daring to look back.

The setting sun bathed the sky in a warm orange-red hue.

Gu Lizhou watched the slender figure walking away and hooked his lips.

No matter how cruel the world may be, it can’t stop those determined steps.

Because there is always light ahead.

Chapter 38 – I was confessed to.

Chapter 38 – I was confessed to.

Zhao Qi has been having trouble sleeping lately and deeply sympathizes with He Changzhou’s pain. He nodded understandingly, “I understand you.”

He Changzhou was taken aback, “You understand me, Your Majesty?”

“The imperial physician gave me a prescription recently, saying daily intake can improve sleep quality. I’ll have Jiang Dehai copy it for you,” Zhao Qi explained.

He Changzhou replied hesitantly, “…So I truly thank Your Majesty for that.”

“Wait,” Zhao Qi’s lengthy thought process finally concluded, “When you mentioned ‘that night,’ which night were you referring to?”

“You mean which night? It was the night of the Longevity Festival,” He Changzhou’s cheeks reddened slightly, but he maintained eye contact with Zhao Qi, “You were utterly drunk, and I carried you back to the palace. Your Majesty was burning hot all over.”

With things said this far, even Zhao Qi could sense the awkwardness. “But didn’t you say you left after bringing me back to the palace?”

He Changzhou seemed to have made up his mind, “Yes, but then I came back.”

Confused, Zhao Qi asked, “Why?”

“Why,” He Changzhou looked down on Zhao Qi, meeting his gaze squarely, “I wanted to ask Your Majesty why. Why you held onto me and wouldn’t let me go, why you asked me to help undress you, why you didn’t want me to leave you alone. Do you know, facing you like that, I couldn’t control myself.”

Zhao Qi felt his breath stop. He heard himself say, “So, it was you that night?” It was He Changzhou who had slept with him?

He Changzhou looked down, like a large dog caught misbehaving, “It was me. I hurt Your Majesty. Your shoulder—Your Majesty? Your Majesty!”

Pinching his own philtrum, Zhao Qi couldn’t stand straight—had he been taken advantage of by his best friend?!

No, I can’t accept this!

Quickly, get me an oxygen tank; I can’t hold on any longer…

Initially supporting Zhao Qi, He Changzhou ended up lifting him. “Your Majesty, hang in there; I’ll send someone to fetch the imperial physician!”

Furious, Zhao Qi yelled, forgetting his own dignity, “Damn it, don’t touch me! Let go!”

He Changzhou held him tighter, resolute. “I won’t let go.”

“You… bastard!” Zhao Qi struggled weakly, like a delicate girl. Realizing he couldn’t break free, he exploded on the spot, biting He Changzhou’s shoulder fiercely.

He Changzhou wasn’t wearing armor, just a thin layer of military uniform. Despite his tough exterior, he couldn’t help but grunt at the bite. Yet, he didn’t flinch, allowing Zhao Qi to continue biting.

Blood spread on his crimson uniform. Tasting blood, Zhao Qi finally released his grip.

He Changzhou still held him, his voice hoarse, “Had enough? If not, Your Majesty can continue.”

Grabbing his shirt’s lapels, Zhao Qi muttered to himself, “I excluded you first… you disappointed me so much!!!”

He Changzhou hadn’t expected his actions to provoke such a strong reaction from Zhao Qi. “I’m sorry, Your Majesty. I shouldn’t have treated you that way.”

Bitterly, Zhao Qi said, “You’re my best friend here!”

He Changzhou gently stroked his hair, trying to calm him. “Yes, yes, I was wrong.”

“Do you know what ‘best friends’ means? It means if one day I suddenly turned into a girl, and if you wanted to, I’d marry you!” Zhao Qi cried out, “But I’m a boy, only nineteen…” tears flowed freely, “How could you do such a beastly thing to me!”

As Zhao Qi cried, He Changzhou became increasingly awkward. “Your Majesty, please don’t cry. Should I just consider it as being bitten by a dog?”

Infuriated, Zhao Qi wanted to kill him, “Then I would be the dog’s day!” How could He Changzhou say such things!

Confused and at a loss, He Changzhou replied, “…Huh?”

After venting through biting, crying, and scolding, Zhao Qi finally calmed down a bit, “You can let go now. I won’t hit you. I wouldn’t stand a chance anyway.”

He Changzhou asked tentatively, “So, Your Majesty doesn’t blame me?”

Turning away, Zhao Qi replied coldly, “I don’t want to see you for now. If you want to go to the Western Xia, I won’t stop you.”

After a moment of silence, He Changzhou sat down while still holding Zhao Qi. He sat in a chair with Zhao Qi reluctantly on his lap, facing each other. Zhao Qi was still immersed in the anguish of being taken advantage of by his best friend and didn’t realize their awkward position.

He Changzhou comforted Zhao Qi, “Your Majesty, now that everything’s out in the open, I don’t feel like leaving anymore.”

Glaring at him, Zhao Qi asked, “Are you playing with me?”

“No,” He Changzhou patiently explained, “Actually, I didn’t expect Your Majesty to take it so seriously…”

With a hint of disdain in his eyes, Zhao Qi said, “You didn’t think it was serious? Seems like you and Li Chisu belong to the same category.”

He Changzhou smiled sheepishly, “So, what does Your Majesty plan to do with me?”

Narrowing his eyes, Zhao Qi glanced down at He Changzhou under him. Now the question was, should he dismantle the bastard who violated him, his best friend?

That night, both he and He Changzhou were at fault. He was wrong for acting out after drinking, and He Changzhou was wrong for not pushing him away. Though He Changzhou bore the greatest responsibility, at that moment, it was he who didn’t let the other leave. Ending the He family’s lineage over this matter would be inappropriate. Besides, the He family held great prestige in the military. If the soldiers found out the Emperor had… well, taken liberties with their young general, the scene would be too much to bear, and he didn’t dare to think about it.

Zhao Qi pondered for a moment and said, “You should think twice about this.”

“No need to think twice,” He Changzhou replied earnestly. “I will take responsibility for Your Majesty.”

Zhao Qi’s expression was complicated. “…There’s really no need.” He wasn’t some chaste maiden; being intimate wouldn’t lead to pregnancy. If he could just relax a bit, he could consider it a drunken lapse with a good friend. It sounded like a trivial matter.

“Why isn’t there a need?” He Changzhou persisted. “I want to take responsibility for Your Majesty. I’m willing to take responsibility for Your Majesty. I hope to make Your Majesty… mine alone.”

With He Changzhou being so direct, Zhao Qi’s brain couldn’t keep up. He jumped up suddenly. “W-what do you mean?”

He Changzhou’s eyes sparkled brightly, open and honest. “I like Your Majesty.”

A thousand thoughts raced through Zhao Qi’s mind. He stuttered, “B-but I don’t like you.”

The stars in He Changzhou’s eyes dimmed suddenly. “I know. You like Rong Tang.” He stood up, approached Zhao Qi, his tall figure imposing. “Your Majesty, I’ve always wanted to ask you, what exactly is it about me that’s inferior to Rong Tang? He treats you with indifference, while I try in every way to make you happy. In your heart, am I still inferior to him?”

Zhao Qi defended himself, “It’s not like that! The reason I treat Rong Tang well is because I owe him too much. I just want to make it up to him.”

He Changzhou chuckled. “Your Majesty didn’t say that before. Everyone in the palace knows, Rong Tang is Your Majesty’s favored.”

“…Yes,” he had said something similar, but that was just a means to maintain his image initially. Could He Changzhou really believe it?

“I don’t want to dwell on the past,” He Changzhou looked deeply into Zhao Qi’s eyes. “What I seek now is Your Majesty’s future.”

He Changzhou’s sudden confession left Zhao Qi utterly bewildered. Coupled with the scare he had just experienced, he felt his heart and mind were on the verge of collapse. But he had to make things clear with He Changzhou. Although he had never been in love, he knew ambiguous behavior often led to misunderstandings. He didn’t want to be seen as leading anyone on, especially not his brother.

Taking a deep breath, Zhao Qi said, “Changzhou, listen carefully. I don’t like you, and I don’t like Rong Tang either. I… am not interested in romance.”

He Changzhou obviously didn’t believe this. “You’re not interested? Then how do you explain that night?”

Zhao Qi sighed in frustration. “I was drunk.”

“Just being drunk can lead to such a strong reaction?” He Changzhou pressed on mercilessly. “Is it because you can’t live without a man once he’s left?”

Zhao Qi had no words to respond. This was the question that had puzzled him all along. He prided himself on his tolerance for alcohol; being drunk usually just made him a bit wild, not… whatever had happened that night. Could it be that his reaction wasn’t due to drunkenness but for some other reason?

Their conversation was interrupted by the announcement, “Prime Minister is here.” Xiao Shiqing entered the hall, followed by Chen Li, the Grand Minister of Justice. Seeing the two of them, Xiao Shiqing asked, “Why is General He here at the Hall of Government Affairs?”

He Changzhou replied, “Prime Minister, His Majesty says he only likes women, not men. Do you believe him?”

A hint of something unusual flickered in Xiao Shiqing’s deep black eyes as he picked up a tinderbox beside the lamp and relit it. He calmly said, “No.”

He Changzhou smiled, “Your Majesty, see? Even the Prime Minister doesn’t believe you.”

Zhao Qi felt like banging his head against a wall. “This is so frustrating!”

Xiao Shiqing’s expression remained calm. “It’s late. Don’t shout.”

Zhao Qi pursed his lips, feeling a bit aggrieved. First, his brother confessed to him, and now his brother had outed him. And to top it off, Xiao Shiqing was scolding him. What a complicated and heated life he was living.

“The Prime Minister doesn’t seem to be in a good mood,” Zhao Qi said, changing the subject. “Chen Li.”

Chen Li hurriedly responded, “Here, Your Majesty.”

“Did you upset the Prime Minister?” Zhao Qi asked.

Chen Li waved his hands repeatedly, “It wasn’t me, Your Majesty. I didn’t.”

“That’s enough,” Xiao Shiqing said coldly. “Let’s stick to the matter at hand.”

Chen Li said, “Yes. Your Majesty, regarding the case of the poisoning death of the Crown Prince of Western Xia, I have found some important clues.”

With national affairs at hand, Zhao Qi temporarily put aside personal matters, gathered his focus, and said, “Mr. Chen, I’m surprised you managed to find such crucial clues! Tell me quickly, what earth-shattering discovery have you made?”

Chen Li knew that Zhao Qi had a biased view against him due to the early peach blossom case at Muyang Temple. “Your Majesty, firstly, Prince Zhaonan received a mysterious note. It was written on cotton paper from Jiangyou, which is known for its fine texture and softness, exclusively used in the palace. Moreover, the note carried a faint scent of Moonlight Orchid.”

Zhao Qi said, “Moonlight Orchid… Isn’t that a perfume commonly used by girls?”

“Your Majesty is wise. Upon investigation, I learned that Moonlight Orchid is often used by Princess Jiayan.”

Zhao Qi had a sudden realization. “That makes sense! Empress Mother has always wanted to betroth Princess Jiayan to Prince Zhaonan. Jiayan must have been eager to see her future husband’s true appearance, so she invited him to the Imperial Garden during the banquet and observed him from hiding.”

Chen Li chuckled. “Your Majesty and Prime Minister are thinking along the same lines. However, Princess Jiayan is from an illustrious background, so we couldn’t directly inquire.”

Zhao Qi nodded. “Leave this matter to me and the Empress Mother. What else?”

Chen Li continued, “I have ordered a detailed investigation into all the utensils used by the Western Xia prince during the banquet. There were no traces of Fengguilu poisoning found. While the onset time of Fengguilu varies by individual, it typically does not exceed an hour. If the Prince of Western Xia wasn’t poisoned during the banquet, it must have happened after he left his seat.”

As Zhao Qi thought, he said, “If the Prince went to the Imperial Garden after leaving his seat, does that mean the suspect is among those who were seen in the garden?”

“Yes, currently confirmed are: Master Rong, Prince Zhaonan, and Prince Huai.”

Zhao Qi added, “And Princess Jiayan.”

He Changzhou pondered. “What about motives? What would these four have to gain from poisoning the Prince of Western Xia?”

Xiao Shiqing slowly said, “Let’s set aside Rong Tang and Princess Jiayan for now. As for these two princes, Zhao and Li, their motives can always be uncovered.”

Zhao Qi frowned. In the original story, there was also a plot about the festival banquet, but the eldest prince of Xixia was not poisoned to death. Since transmigrating into the body of the ‘Dog Emperor’, he had indeed altered the storyline significantly. However, Zhao Tong and Li Chisu were far away in their fiefdoms, so their influence should be minimal. If either of them really took action, what reasons could have prompted them to change their minds?

In the original story, Li Chisu’s actions upon entering the capital were similar to his current behavior—frequenting the pleasure quarters and indulging in luxuries. Meanwhile, Zhao Tong, upon returning to the capital in the original plot, focused primarily on consolidating support. Apart from Rong Tang, who was trapped in the palace, he met with quite a few people, including…

For a moment, no one spoke. Xiao Shiqing stood up and said, “It’s getting late. The Emperor should return to the palace and rest. We’ll discuss this matter again tomorrow.”

Chen Li tactfully said, “I’ll take my leave.”

After Chen Li left, He Changzhou showed no intention of leaving. Xiao Shiqing looked at him. “General He, is there something else?”

He Changzhou replied, “There are still some personal matters between His Majesty and me that we haven’t finished discussing. Prime Minister, you need not concern yourself.”

Just when they had managed to temporarily forget their troubles, now everything came flooding back. Zhao Qi lay his head on the table, pretending to be asleep.

“Personal matters,” Xiao Shiqing smiled faintly, “I wasn’t aware that you and His Majesty had personal matters.”

He Changzhou said, “There are many things the Prime Minister doesn’t know.”

“Since it’s personal matters, there’s no need to discuss them late at night in the palace,” Xiao Shiqing said, “You can come again tomorrow. The Emperor needs to rest.”

He Changzhou chuckled, “Prime Minister, since you don’t sleep with His Majesty, why bother about when he sleeps?”

Xiao Shiqing also smiled, “And how would General He know whether I sleep with His Majesty or not?”

He Changzhou hesitated, “…”

“Your Majesty,” Xiao Shiqing turned to Zhao Qi, “let’s return to the palace. It’s time for bed.”

Chapter 50 – Feather Touch

Chapter 50: Feather Touch

Long Ling carried his phoenix and walked towards the second floor.

Although he had no specific memories, he subconsciously knew the layout of this small building and the location of the bedroom on the second floor.

After a millennium, this wooden building seemed sealed by time, with all decorations intact as if untouched by years.

Long Ling entered the bedroom, elegantly arranged with a large soft bed by the window, its corners dr4p3d with light curtains, which made him pause momentarily.

At the same time, flashes of images crossed his mind—it seemed like thousands of years ago, he and the phoenix were on this bed…

Long Ling stiffened slightly, lowering his gaze to his phoenix—Su Muluo was still asleep, one hand unknowingly clutching his clothes, unwilling to let go.

A smile quickly crossed Long Ling’s eyes. Tenderly, he brushed Su Muluo’s forehead and gently laid him on the bed.

As the light curtains lifted and fell, Long Ling lay down beside his phoenix, reaching out to embrace his slender waist.

Unconsciously, Su Muluo buried his face in Long Ling’s chest, even in his dreams, clinging to his dragon.

Long Ling soothingly patted Su Muluo’s back, holding his phoenix close as they fell asleep together.

Su Muluo slept deeply, unaware of how much time had passed before he finally woke up.

Everything from the dream had faded away. He felt himself lying on a soft bed, tightly held in the arms of his dragon—lifting his head, he noticed Long Ling still asleep.

Silently, Su Muluo shifted, burying his face in Long Ling’s shoulder. He wanted to smell the scent of his dragon, but soon frowned.

There was a hint of blood on his dragon’s body.

Was he injured?

Su Muluo immediately looked at Long Ling’s face, finding him still asleep. He reached out, intending to unbutton his clothes—

But his hand was stopped by another slender hand.

“Phoenix,” Long Ling opened his eyes, a slight smile on his lips, “what are you doing?”

Su Muluo met his gaze, not withdrawing his hand. “Are you injured?”

Long Ling paused for a moment, then quickly replied, “No, I’m fine.”

Su Muluo said, “Then let me check your clothes.”

Long Ling fell silent.

Knowing he wouldn’t admit it, Su Muluo didn’t press further. Instead, he took matters into his own hands and continued unbuttoning Long Ling’s clothes.

Long Ling protested, “Phoenix, you’re undressing me, trying to take advantage of me!”

He tried to cover up something, but Su Muluo remained unfazed. Amid their struggle, Long Ling’s outer garment was eventually pulled open by his phoenix.

As Su Muluo suspected, Long Ling’s smooth muscles were covered with several scars, each one long and sharp, inflicted by the golden dragon’s claws.

However, being a dragon, Long Ling had immense vitality and healed quickly. Most of these wounds had already scarred over, and some of the less severe ones were almost completely healed.

Despite this, when Su Muluo saw these wounds, he was momentarily stunned, unable to speak. His heart felt like it was bleeding, aching intensely.

Long Ling cautiously watched Su Muluo’s expression, sensing his phoenix was deeply upset, wearing a sullen face, clearly unhappy.

Like a bullied, dejected fledgling bird.

“Phoenix,” Long Ling’s heart ached, leaning closer to stroke Su Muluo’s face, softly comforting, “Don’t worry, these are just minor injuries, they’ll heal quickly.”

“And you didn’t see how that dragon looked, I nearly stripped him of his protective scales, he nearly lost his life.”

Su Muluo ignored this small boasting in dragon talk. His brows furrowed tightly, suddenly remembering something, he lowered his head and kissed that wound.

Long Ling: “…”

He almost couldn’t control his gasp of cold air, and even wanted to press his phoenix on the bed to touch the feathers.

But he also knew that his phoenix did not mean that, just wanted to help him heal-the phoenix’s saliva is also a kind of precious treasure, with extremely precious healing effects.

The bedroom was quiet, and Long Ling looked down at his phoenix’s forehead, trying hard to stay calm and thinking in his heart: I knew I should have been injured more.

Su Muluo seemed to hear his thoughts, and at this moment he looked at him quietly.

Long Ling: “…”

He immediately kissed Su Muluo, smiling and saying: “The Phoenix looks really good, I like Phoenix the most!”

Su Muluo did not speak, raised his hand, and gently touched Long Ling’s wound.

In just a few seconds, those wounds healed without leaving a trace – but even so, Long Ling still had a grim scar on his abdomen.

Su Muluo saw this scar clearly in the hotel two days ago, and now he also knew who left it.

“Where is that person?”

“I drove him away with a serious injury,” Long Ling said proudly, pressing his jaw on Su Muluo’s shoulder, “I thought he was very strong, but it turned out to be nothing.”

He looked like he was going to praise Phoenix, and Su Muluo’s eyes showed a little smile, touching his head and saying, “So amazing.”

But if his dragon is stronger than the golden dragon, how could he have been seriously injured and lost his bones thousands of years ago?

Or did the golden dragon use some means that cannot be seen?

Su Muluo’s face was slightly darkened again when he thought of this, and he said to Long Ling, “What about your dragon bones?”

Long Ling casually reached back and took the dragon bones that he had thrown on the bedside.

This is a section of spine, all white, with a layer of black mist enveloping it, which makes it clear that it is not an ordinary product.

Su Muluo carefully took it-overlap with this section of spine, and his eyes suddenly flashed with a lot of images.

A golden dragon pressed a black dragon under its claws, the blade tore off the scales, pierced the abdomen, and forcefully pulled out a bloody bone…

“Don’t!”

In that instant, Su Muluo couldn’t help but scream, he even forgot that he was still in reality, grabbed Long Ling’s arm in horror, and sweated coldly.

Fortunately, the next second, those pictures disappeared, he was hugged by Long Ling, patted his back and comforted, “It’s okay, Phoenix, nothing happened, you see, I’m still good here.”

“…”

Su Muluo looked at Long Ling for a few seconds in a daze, suddenly hugged him tightly, and buried his face in his chest, no longer wanting to leave this embrace.

Although it was just a few fragments, he seemed to have experienced the pain of losing his dragon in a nightmare again, so clear… He couldn’t imagine how his dragon would endure all this.

”It’s all in the past. I don’t even remember that pain anymore.” Long Ling stroked Su Muluo’s hair gently and said softly, “My bones had already grown out when I broke free from the shell, so it’s okay.”

Su Muluo remained silent, still tightly gripping Long Ling’s clothes. He had just experienced in his dreams the pain of losing his clan and witnessed his dragon being stripped of its bones. Cold sweat trickled down his back, and he remained silent for a long time.

Long Ling comforted his own phoenix for a while until he noticed the phoenix’s mood improving. He glanced at the piece of dragon bone and considered throwing it away.

Su Muluo suddenly grabbed his hand and asked, “What are you doing?”

”It’s useless to me and only makes the phoenix sad,” Long Ling said. “So I want to throw it away.”

Holding onto the dragon bone, Su Muluo refused to let go. “You’re not allowed to throw it away.”

It was something from his dragon; how could he casually discard it?

Long Ling looked at the dragon bone and then at his phoenix. “Then, should I make it into a dagger and let the phoenix carry it with us?”

After thinking for a moment, Su Muluo nodded and finally handed the dragon bone back to him.

Long Ling looked at his precious phoenix and the dragon bone in his hand. A slight smile appeared on his lips. “I even gave my own dragon bone to the phoenix. How will the phoenix thank me?”

Upon hearing this, Su Muluo glanced at him, then shifted his gaze to the feather bracelet he was wearing.

Immediately, Long Ling concealed his feather bracelet in his sleeve and quickly said, “Alright, I didn’t say anything.”

Despite his words, he leaned over and kissed Su Muluo on the cheek, gleefully taking advantage of the situation.

Su Muluo said nothing, allowing him to take advantage, and after a while, he said, “Here, I saw the apparition left by me from a thousand years ago, and he left me a message.”

Long Ling made a sound of acknowledgment, “Hmm, what did he say?”

Su Muluo recounted word for word what his dream-self had told Long Ling. After hearing it, he fell into contemplation.

“Seal…” He furrowed his brows slightly, “What kind of seal is it that’s related to the heavenly path?”

Su Muluo shook his head. “I don’t know either.”

Now it seemed that in order to restore his previous power, he needed to break the seals on his body. There should be several layers of seals, with only the final one that couldn’t be undone—because once it was undone, it would touch upon some truths from his past that he had desperately wanted to conceal.

And that truth probably involved the downfall of both the Dragon and Phoenix clans… as well as the hidden secrets of the heavenly path.

Long Ling and Su Muluo locked eyes for a few seconds. Long Ling gently touched his Phoenix’s forehead and said, “In that case, the Phoenix doesn’t need to unlock the last seal.”

“I will always protect the Phoenix.”

Su Muluo didn’t say anything, just nodded.

However, despite his outward agreement, what he was thinking inside was that if his dragon were really in danger someday, he would definitely spare no effort to undo that last seal.

Apparently, he had thought the same way a thousand years ago, otherwise he wouldn’t have left these words for his present self.

While Su Muluo was lost in thought with his eyes lowered, his face suddenly became slightly moist—Long Ling had kissed him on the cheek.

“…” He stared at Long Ling and, after a few seconds, said, “I’m not giving you another kiss.”

Long Ling: “Don’t want it.”

After speaking, he shamelessly leaned in and kissed him again, who knows how many times.

Su Muluo: “…”

Su Muluo remained silent again.

With a sullen face on the surface, he actually held onto Long Ling’s clothes corner and refused to let go.

Long Ling noticed his little gesture and the smile in his eyes almost overflowed.

After his Phoenix woke up, it became extremely clingy and adorable, saying he shouldn’t be kissed, but in reality, he still indulged him.

So he happily buried his face in Su Muluo’s shoulder and rubbed it back and forth, lifting his head only after he had enough, asking, “Does the Phoenix want to go back now?”

By now, they had explored Suyuan thoroughly. Although they hadn’t fully recovered their memories, they had gained a lot.

After thinking for a moment, Su Muluo nodded and said, “Let’s go.”

They were just leaving temporarily; they could come back here again. And he also planned to think carefully after returning about how to unlock the other seals on his body except for the last one.

Long Ling wanted to hold his Phoenix’s hand and leave, but Su Muluo didn’t let him. Instead, he spread out his arms at him, blinking and staring at him.

He wanted a hug.

Long Ling was slightly stunned, then burst into laughter, lifting his Phoenix horizontally and nuzzling him affectionately, “The Phoenix is so clingy to me. Why didn’t you want to kiss me a few more times just now?”

Su Muluo remained silent, burying his face in his shoulder, pretending to be a quail.

Long Ling couldn’t resist his adorable Phoenix at all, immediately agreeing, “Okay, whatever the Phoenix wants.”

Su Muluo was finally satisfied, like a child who got candy, pressing his soft face against Long Ling’s and rubbing it affectionately.

Long Ling immediately kissed his Phoenix’s cheek again, holding his beloved Phoenix tightly.

It took two days to go from Lin City to where they were, but returning only took a few hours. In the evening, Long Ling returned to Lin City with his Phoenix in his arms and asked, “Do you want to go to the coffee shop first?”

Su Muluo shook his head and said, “Let’s go back, I’m tired.”

— But they had only slept a few hours ago.

Long Ling suddenly became alert and asked, “What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”

Su Muluo said, “No,” and whispered, “I just want to go to bed early.”

This puzzled Long Ling even more, as the Phoenix seemed perfectly fine just moments ago… but he didn’t say anything, instead carrying his Phoenix back to their rental house.

Inside the rental house, Su Muluo took a shower first and then urged Long Ling to do the same.

Long Ling was puzzled, “But it’s still early, only seven o’clock.”

“I want to sleep,” Su Muluo said, “I want you to hold me.”

He was wearing soft pajamas and smelled of fresh shower gel. He tugged at Long Ling’s clothes gently, swaying slightly.

Long Ling immediately surrendered and went to take a shower.

After showering, he found that the lights in the living room had been turned off by Su Muluo. His Phoenix had curled up under the blankets in the bedroom, only showing a pair of eyes, quietly watching him.

Long Ling thought to himself: Today’s Phoenix seems unusually obedient.

He then walked over and lay down on the bed, embracing his soft Phoenix.

“Should I turn off the lights?”

Su Muluo made a sound of agreement, and Long Ling turned off the lights in the room, plunging it into darkness.

With darkness came silence. Su Muluo lay silently in Long Ling’s arms, feeling the warmth he brought… He looked up and saw his dragon quietly watching him in the darkness.

They gazed at each other for a while. Long Ling spoke softly, “Does the Phoenix want to tell me something?”

His voice was deep and gentle, filled with affection and fondness. His dark golden eyes were deep and profound, like bottomless pools, threatening to engulf Su Muluo gently.

“…”

Su Muluo hadn’t spoken for a while. Just when Long Ling thought he might not respond, he suddenly saw his Phoenix lower his head, clutching Long Ling’s sleeve, and softly saying,

“I want… to let you touch my feathers.”

Long Ling: “…”

Chapter 37 – Am I still your puppet emperor?

Chapter 37 – Am I still your puppet emperor?

Zhao Qi took the sunken wooden box and didn’t open it immediately. Instead, he weighed it in his hand. “Seems like it’s something small?”

Xiao Shiqing remained noncommittal.

Zhao Qi opened the wooden box to find half of a token shaped like a crouching tiger inside. His mouth gaped in astonishment. “Could this be the legendary… Tiger Token?”

“Why do you say ‘legendary’?” Xiao Shiqing replied. “The Tiger Token has existed since ancient times. It’s split in two halves: one given to the generals, the other kept by the emperor. Only when both halves are combined can the bearer command troops. Due to certain circumstances, both halves were in my possession. Returning half to you now is returning it to its rightful owner.”

Zhao Qi held the half Tiger Token in his palm. The touch of the bronze was cool, gradually sobering him. “The other half is still with my brother?”

“Yes.”

This birthday gift was something Zhao Qi had never expected. He had thought Xiao Shiqing would casually give him some exotic treasure, but instead, he gave him… half of the country.

Suddenly, Zhao Qi felt the weight of bronze in his hand. Was Xiao Shiqing testing him, or did he genuinely intend to give him the Tiger Token?

Last time, when Xiao Shiqing had proposed letting Zhao Qi take over the government, Zhao Qi was certain it was the former. But this time, he wasn’t so sure. After these days of interaction, he could feel Xiao Shiqing was truly teaching and assisting him. Ignoring Xiao Shiqing’s playful teasing in private, Zhao Qi was even considering giving him a banner that read “loyal minister and good general.”

Zhao Qi hesitated to respond, and Xiao Shiqing seemed displeased. “Your Majesty doesn’t seem to like my gift.”

Zhao Qi scratched his head. “Brother’s gift is too precious.”

“I’m only asking if you like it or not.”

Seeing Xiao Shiqing growing impatient, Zhao Qi dared not say he didn’t like it. “I like it,” he hesitated, “but does Brother really want to return half of the military power to me?”

Xiao Shiqing looked at him. “What exactly do you want to say?”

Gathering his courage, Zhao Qi said, “Don’t you see me as a puppet emperor anymore?”

Xiao Shiqing fell silent.

Feeling uneasy, Zhao Qi asked, “Brother?”

Suddenly, Xiao Shiqing smiled. “A puppet? At this point, you still think I see you as a puppet?”

Zhao Qi blinked. “I’m not sure, that’s why I asked Brother.”

Xiao Shiqing closed his eyes as if slightly annoyed. “Yes, I see you as a puppet. I’m wasting time on a puppet every day. I think it’s not right to hold military power alone, so I gave half of it to you—a satisfactory answer, Your Majesty?”

Zhao Qi could tell Xiao Shiqing was angry but didn’t know why. This man’s thoughts were too difficult to gauge.

“Your Majesty… satisfied?” Faced with Xiao Shiqing’s piercing gaze, Zhao Qi quickly changed his tune. “Not satisfied. I’m not satisfied!”

Xiao Shiqing didn’t bother to argue further. “Keep the Tiger Token.”

“Wait,” Zhao Qi said, “So in the future, we can only command the troops when we combine our halves of the token?”

Xiao Shiqing paused. “Yes.”

Zhao Qi slowly closed his palm around the half token. Whatever, since Xiao Shiqing had given it to him so insistently, he wouldn’t refuse it for nothing.

“Thank you, Brother,” Zhao Qi said, “I will take good care of this half Tiger Token.”

Xiao Shiqing’s expression softened slightly. “You better.”

“Oh, by the way, there’s something else I want to discuss with Brother.”

“Speak.”

Zhao Qi said, “Haiyan Hall isn’t really my sleeping palace. I can’t keep staying there. I want to move back to Yonghua Palace.”

Xiao Shiqing’s gaze locked onto Zhao Qi’s face, a smile playing at his lips. “Does Your Majesty want to return to Yonghua Palace, or do you want to see someone in Yonghua Palace?”

“The people in Yonghua Palace… Brother means Rong Tang?” Zhao Qi asked naturally, “Rong Tang’s recovery is almost complete, so he’ll definitely move back to Tipsy Book Pavilion.”

“Oh, is that so,” Xiao Shiqing said lightly, “Did he tell you that himself?”

Zhao Qi was puzzled. “Is there a need for him to say?”

“That’s not necessarily true,” Xiao Shiqing said, “When he moves out, you can move back in. It’s late now, time to sleep.”

“Oh,” Zhao Qi lay back down. Xiao Shiqing remained seated beside his bed, showing no intention to leave. Zhao Qi asked, “Brother, aren’t you leaving?”

Xiao Shiqing adjusted the covers slightly. “I’ll leave after you fall asleep.”

“…,” Zhao Qi thought Xiao Shiqing staring at him like this would keep him awake, but he soon felt drowsy. Xiao Shiqing’s faint ink fragrance inexplicably brought peace, and with his presence, Zhao Qi gradually drifted into dreams.

The next day, Zhao Qi ordered Jiang Dehai to tidy up and prepare to return to Yonghua Palace. “Oh, and have someone redecorate Zuishu Pavilion. Check what’s missing and replenish whatever is needed.”

In the evening, Zhao Qi returned to Yonghua Palace and unexpectedly found lights on in the side hall. He asked, “Who’s in there?”

Xiao Jinzi replied, “Your Majesty, have you forgotten? Lord Rong is still here at Yonghua Palace.”

Zhao Qi paused, “He hasn’t left yet?”

Jiang Dehai asked, “Should I chase him away, Your Majesty?”

“How can you use such words as ‘chase’?” Zhao Qi corrected, “I want to invite him back to Zuishu Pavilion.”

“Shall I go and invite him now?” Jiang Dehai asked.

After hesitating for a moment, Zhao Qi said, “I remember Prime Minister Xiao returned to his residence tonight, right?”

“Yes.”

“Then let’s talk to him tomorrow. It’s too late today; let’s not disturb him.”

“As you command.”

After Zhao Qi left, Xiao Jinzi couldn’t help but comment, “Grand Tutor, don’t you think our Emperor behaves like someone sneaking around with a favored concubine behind the Empress’s back?”

Jiang Dehai glared at him, “Tsk, you’re getting more talkative. You might as well stop being called ‘Xiao Jinzi’ and be called ‘Xiao Duozi’ instead. Now go and do your work!”

The next day, Jiang Dehai and Xiao Jinzi went together to invite Rong Tang back to Zuishu Pavilion. Rong Tang replied calmly, “Is this His Majesty’s wish or Prime Minister Xiao’s?”

Jiang Dehai cautiously answered, “This servant doesn’t know.”

Rong Tang glanced towards Zhao Qi’s sleeping quarters and smiled faintly, “I understand. Grand Tutor, rest assured, I won’t make things difficult for His Majesty.” Once he decided on something, patience was the least of his lacking qualities.

If Xiao Shiqing could patiently wait, so could he.

After some twists and turns, Zhao Qi finally returned to living alone. Jiang Dehai couldn’t help but sigh, “It’s only when Prime Minister Xiao and Lord Rong both step back that His Majesty finds these moments of peace.”

Xiao Jinzi remarked, “Grand Tutor, Prime Minister Xiao doesn’t seem like someone who would step back.”

Jiang Dehai calmly replied, “You have a point. He retreats to advance, biding his time.”

News of the Crown Prince of Western Xia quickly spread to their homeland, where it was said the Western Xia King was furious, threatening to cease allegiance to Great Jing if there was no resolution within seven days. Meanwhile, ten thousand troops from Western Xia were rushing towards the border between the two nations, ready to camp and prepare for action.

With the backing of their homeland, Western Xia envoys in the capital became increasingly arrogant, moving about the Imperial Palace as if it were uninhabited, pressing their demands multiple times a day. Particularly upon learning the Western Xia Crown Prince had fallen victim to a secret poison from the Great Jing court, they became even more brazen, spouting reckless threats. Initially, Zhao Qi could maintain a cordial demeanor towards them, but eventually grew tired and simply began to mimic Xiao Shiqing, refusing to see them—no matter how loud they protested.

During morning court, officials engaged in heated debates over this case. Leaving aside whether they could identify the true culprit within seven days, many military officials were displeased with Western Xia’s actions. From their perspective, Western Xia was merely a minor vassal state of Great Jing, with thirty thousand Forbidden Army soldiers stationed solely for the protection of the capital. To them, Western Xia’s ten thousand troops seemed audacious. Conversely, most civilian officials believed Great Jing was at fault in this matter; with the kingdom plagued by natural disasters and frequent flooding in the south, empty treasuries, and avoidable military conflicts, it was imperative to capture and deliver the true murderer of the Western Xia Crown Prince to Western Xia for punishment, regardless of who it was.

Zhao Qi listened attentively. When he heard the phrase “frequent flooding,” he was momentarily distracted, his face flushing. He felt like he would never be able to face those three words directly again—it was all the fault of that damned bastard!

In the end, Xiao Shiqing spoke up to end the debate between the two sides. “The investigation will continue, while we prepare for military action to be safe.”

With the situation unstable, Zhao Qi reluctantly set aside the search for the bastard and devoted himself wholeheartedly to state affairs.

“Your Majesty.”

Zhao Qi looked up to meet a pair of striking brows and eyes, smiling, “Changzhou, why are you here?”

He Changzhou placed both hands behind his back and walked briskly towards Zhao Qi. “I’ve brought some food for Your Majesty.”

Zhao Qi sniffed, “Wow, smells like lamb?”

“Is Your Majesty a dog?” He Changzhou presented a golden-brown roasted leg of lamb. “I slaughtered it just an hour ago and roasted it immediately for Your Majesty—here.”

Zhao Qi took the leg of lamb and took a big bite, looking satisfied. “Poor little lamb. But aren’t you supposed to be busy with military preparations? Yet you have the leisure to roast lamb for me.”

He Changzhou casually picked up an ink stick from the table and began grinding ink for Zhao Qi. “Your Majesty, we haven’t seen each other in a while.”

“We saw each other at court, didn’t we?”

“That doesn’t count.” He Changzhou lowered his gaze. “Your Majesty hasn’t noticed that I haven’t been visiting you recently.”

Zhao Qi thought about it and realized there might be some truth to that. He had noticed that He Changzhou used to visit the palace frequently, but lately, he had been coming less often. Zhao Qi belatedly realized that even at court, He Changzhou would deliberately avoid making eye contact with him, as if avoiding him altogether.

With a self-deprecating smile, He Changzhou said, “Your Majesty indeed didn’t notice. It seems I’m just an insignificant presence to Your Majesty.”

What was with this complaining tone? If one didn’t know better, they would think he had abandoned He Changzhou after using him.

“Sigh, I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, and you know that.”

He Changzhou nodded, “I know. That’s why I’m here to share Your Majesty’s burdens.”

“Oh? How so?”

He Changzhou said, “I’m willing to lead troops to Western Xia and confront their army to assert our national prestige.”

Frowning, Zhao Qi said, “We’re not at the point of war yet. Even if we were, there’s no need for you to rush over thousands of miles. Those frontier officials aren’t just sitting around.”

He Changzhou smiled, “I’ve been feeling very frustrated lately and wanted to leave the capital, get away. Please agree, Your Majesty.”

“What are you frustrated about?”

He Changzhou looked at Zhao Qi deeply, “Frustrated with Your Majesty.”

“Ah?” Zhao Qi was taken aback and shouldered a heavy burden unexpectedly. “How have I troubled you?”

“You, Your Majesty, have made it so I can’t sleep through the night. Every time I close my eyes, all I see is Your Majesty’s face from that night.”

Chapter 66

The next day, Zhan Xueqing went out with Zhan Weiguang and Zhan Xiusong, leaving Pei Qing and Zhan Weiyang at home for the whole day. Zhan Weiyang followed Pei Qing for a walk and went to the supermarket to buy some snacks before dinner.

The three of them came back quite late.

At that time, Zhan Weiyang was already lying on Pei Qing’s bed playing with his mobile phone, while Pei Qing was sitting by the window reading a book.

Zhan Weiyang heard the noise coming from the corridor. He first strained his ears to listen carefully to see if Zhan Pengcheng was back. Later, he found that the sound came from his room, and then he knew that Zhan Xueqing was back.

“Qing jie is back,” Zhan Weiyang said to Pei Qing.

Pei Qing didn’t even raise his head and said ‘En’ very lightly.

Zhan Weiyang still looked at him.

After a while, Pei Qing asked, “What are you looking at me for?”

Zhan Weiyang supported his body with his arms and said, “Are you not going to talk to her?”

Pei Qing seemed to find it strange, “Why should I talk to her?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “Wasn’t she unhappy yesterday?”

Pei Qing put down the book in his hand, looked at Zhan Weiyang, and asked him seriously, “Why do you think she is unhappy?”

Zhan Weiyang looked confused, “I don’t know.”

Pei Qing said, “Then why do you think I should talk to her?”

Zhan Weiyang thought for a while and said, “Didn’t she say you didn’t want to go out with her?”

Pei Qing remained silent for a while and then said, “I really don’t want to go out with her. Is there any problem?”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t understand, probably because he couldn’t accept Pei Qing’s straightforward remarks, and asked nervously, “Why?”

Pei Qing said, “Isn’t it good for me to play with you at home?”

Zhan Weiyang was a little happy to hear this and couldn’t help but smile, but then he said, “But you can still accompany Qing jie to play; she seems unhappy.”

Pei Qing casually flipped the book on his knees and asked Zhan Weiyang, “If I can only accompany one person, who do you want me to accompany?”

Zhan Weiyang immediately said, “Of course you have to accompany me!”

After that, he felt that he might be too selfish and added in a low voice, “You can accompany her occasionally.”

“That won’t work,” Pei Qing said, “If you ask your Qing jie about this question, she will say that I can only accompany her, not you.”

Zhan Weiyang opened his eyes wide, “Why?”

Pei Qing grabbed the book and walked to the bedside, gently patting Zhan Weiyang on the head, “Why do you think?”

Zhan Weiyang was puzzled, raised his hand and touched his head, “I don’t know.” Why ask him?

Pei Qing smiled and said, “If you don’t know, think about it carefully.”

Zhan Weiyang thought about it, but he still didn’t know. He lay on the bed, not playing with his phone but resting his head on his arm in a daze, and after a while, he said, “I’m hungry.”

Pei Qing had picked up a book to read again, but when he heard him talking, he put it down again and asked him, “Do you want to have a midnight snack?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I don’t want to go out.”

“Then eat at home. What do you want to eat?”

       “Instant noodles?”

       “So unambitious?”

       “Add an egg?”

Pei Qing smiled, “Okay.” After saying that, he reached out to Zhan Weiyang and pulled him up from the bed.

Zhan Weiyang put on his slippers and followed Pei Qing out. Although it was the coldest time of winter, the heating was on at home, and he didn’t feel the cold even in his thin pyjamas.

Pei Qing cooked a bowl of instant noodles for Zhan Weiyang in the kitchen and added an egg. After the noodles were cooked, Zhan Weiyang insisted on taking it to the upstairs room to eat and didn’t want to sit down in the dining room to eat.

“That’s so troublesome?” Pei Qing didn’t agree. Zhan Weiyang then took the bowl upstairs by himself. Pei Qing followed him. Pei Qing casually took a bowl from the cupboard, which was not too big. After adding the egg to the instant noodles, it was quite full. Zhan Weiyang carried it upstairs carefully.

He had just reached the second floor when Pei Qing said behind him, “You forgot to take the chopsticks.”

Zhan Weiyang said, ‘Oops’ and turned around suddenly. The noodle soup in the bowl swayed, and a few drops spilt onto the floor.

He looked down and said, “Oh no.” For a moment, he couldn’t decide whether to get the chopsticks first or put the bowl back in the room first.

Pei Qing then said to him, “But I already got it for you.” He shook the chopsticks in his hand.

Zhan Weiyang said, “You made me dirty the floor.”

Pei Qing smiled and said, “You go in first, I’ll get some tissue to wipe the floor.”

At that moment, the bathroom door suddenly opened. Zhan Xueqing, who had just finished her shower, came out with a steamy presence. She glanced at Pei Qing and then at Zhan Weiyang, smiling as she asked, “Is Yangyang hungry?”

Zhan Weiyang still had the bowl in his hand and nodded. Zhan Xueqing walked towards him, got close to smell his instant noodles, and said, “It smells so good, did Yangyang cook it himself?”

Zhan Weiyang shook his head, “Qing ge cooked it for me.”

Zhan Xueqing immediately looked at Pei Qing. Pei Qing didn’t look at her but just said to Zhan Weiyang, “Hurry up and go inside, aren’t your hands sore from carrying it?”

Zhan Weiyang then said to Zhan Xueqing, “Qing jie, I’ll go in first.” He carefully bypassed Zhan Xueqing and walked towards the room. When he reached the door, he found that he couldn’t free his hands to open the door.

Pei Qing had just moved when Zhan Xueqing took the initiative to walk over and help Zhan Weiyang open the door.

Zhan Weiyang said, “Thank you,” and walked inside with the bowl.

Zhan Xueqing glanced at their room, then returned to the corridor and walked towards her room.

Pei Qing followed Zhan Weiyang into the room, first handed him the chopsticks, then took out a paper towel to wipe the floor.

When he returned to the room, Zhan Weiyang was already lying on the window sill and started eating noodles.

Pei Qing asked him, “Is it delicious?”

Zhan Weiyang nodded, and he asked Pei Qing, “Do you want to eat?”

“I don’t want to eat,” Pei Qing said.

Zhan Weiyang felt that it would be bad if he didn’t share, so he picked up a chopstick of noodles, moved some away, and invited Pei Qing, “Eat a little bit.”

Pei Qing said, “Will you feed me?”

Zhan Weiyang smiled and nodded, “I’ll feed you.”

Pei Qing walked to the windowsill, bent down, and let Zhan Weiyang feed him a chopstick of noodles. He said, “You eat, I’m not eating.”

Zhan Weiyang felt really full after eating the instant noodles. He lay on the bed and touched his stomach in a daze. When he was about to fall asleep, he suddenly said, “Forget it.”

“What do you mean forget it?” Pei Qing was about to fall asleep. He was awakened by the sound of his voice and opened his eyes.

Zhan Weiyang said, “You’d better not accompany Qing jie.”

Pei Qing was silent for a while and asked him, “Why?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I just thought about it, and I think I will be unhappy.”

“Why are you unhappy?” Pei Qing asked, “If I go to accompany Zhan Xiusong, will you be unhappy?”

Zhan Weiyang thought about it seriously and said, “I don’t know. But if you accompany him instead of me, I will definitely be unhappy.”

“Well,” Pei Qing said, “Then I’ll tell you why you are unhappy because everyone has selfish desires, which is normal.”

Zhan Weiyang asked him, “Am I selfish?”

Pei Qing said, “If you have to put it that way, isn’t it actually quite good?”

       Zhan Weiyang didn’t understand, “Huh?”

Pei Qing said, “I also hope that my Yangyang will only accompany me. In some aspects, everyone is selfish.”

Zhan Weiyang’s heart skipped a beat when he heard his words. He suddenly pulled up the quilt to cover half of his face, but he still felt his face getting hot. Pei Qing asked him, “Why are you not saying anything?”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t know what to say. He heard his own heartbeat and said after a while, “I fell asleep.”

Pei Qing smiled silently in the darkness.

Chapter 49 – Secrets

Chapter 49: Secrets

Upon discovering Su Muluo had broken his formation, the man first fell silent, then looked astonished.

“It seems I’ve underestimated you,” he said, “I didn’t expect that thousands of years later, you would still be—”

Before he could finish his sentence, a dragon roar thundered from outside the small building, sweeping away all shadows with its overwhelming presence. Long Ling charged into the building, saying, “Phoenix!”

Su Muluo replied calmly, “I’m fine.”

In reality, he had only been trapped by the formation for a few seconds. The reason he was caught was because he hadn’t been on guard.

Long Ling, upon hearing this, was still not entirely reassured. He sniffed the scent on the Phoenix and confirmed that he was indeed uninjured, before casting his icy gaze into the air—

Now that the formation had shattered, a dragon bone floated in mid-air, surrounded by dark electric light, emitting an ominous hue.

At the sight of the dragon bone, Long Ling’s pupils contracted suddenly. In an instant, Su Muluo sensed the soaring hostility and murderous intent emanating from his own dragon’s spine.

He knew why, because that was the spine of his dragon.

He had once had a nightmare, in which his dragon lay bathed in blood, collapsing into his arms… At this moment, that dream finally had an answer.

Su Muluo wanted to move forward with Long Ling, but was stopped by him.

“Don’t move, Phoenix,” Long Ling’s eyes, tinted with a dark golden hue, were icy, yet his tone remained gentle when facing Su Muluo. “This is mine. I must reclaim it.”

Su Muluo looked at him and nodded after a few seconds. “Alright.”

The man obviously could hear their conversation, sneering coldly. The dragon bones flew out of the small building enveloped in black electric light — at the same time, Long Ling chased after without hesitation.

The next moment, two loud dragon roars almost simultaneously echoed. Su Muluo quickly stepped out and saw a large golden dragon soaring in the sky above the valley, instantly entangled with another black dragon.

“Oh my god!” The spirit of the jade pendant was shocked speechless, “I-Is that… Lord Long Ling’s kin?!”

Su Muluo remained silent with a calm expression. He had previously speculated whether the man behind the demonic spirit was a dragon, and now it seemed his speculation was confirmed.

The golden dragon was obviously fully grown, its scales shining like pure gold, standing majestically above the valley, resembling a sun ruling over all.

But if it was a sun, then the black dragon was a bottomless abyss, swallowing all light. It matched the golden dragon in size and was equally imposing, unaffected by the golden dragon’s brilliance, exuding an equally overwhelming aura.

The battle between the black and golden dragons was like two mountains colliding, their roars shaking the surroundings, their claws splitting mountains and shattering rocks. For a moment, darkness engulfed the sky, and the valley floor trembled, yet the small building stood firm, unaffected.

Spirit of the jade pendant: “Ahhhh, so frightening!!”

After all, it was just a spiritual entity and could not withstand such an impact like Su Muluo, who was the Phoenix himself. It immediately wanted to retreat into the jade pendant… But as it turned around, it suddenly saw something inside the small building and exclaimed.

“Lord Phoenix! Look there!”

At this moment, all of Su Muluo’s attention was on the battle of his dragon. It took several calls from the spirit of the jade pendant to distract him — it was this glance that caught his eye.

Inside the small building, a shadowy figure in a black robe with silver hair sat quietly in a chair.

It was a young man with silver hair loosely tied behind him, wearing a white shirt adorned with white feathers and dr4p3d with a black robe. His slender fingers rested on the table, knuckles slightly bent, eyelashes lowered as if contemplating, yet also waiting.

His skin was pale as snow, his features delicate and beautiful like a serene lake — Su Muluo silently watched him, a profoundly strange feeling welling up inside him.

This was himself.

The difference was that he now had black hair, while this version of himself had silver hair.

Outside, the battle between the black and golden dragons continued to intensify. Su Muluo waited for a few seconds and noticed that the shadowy figure hadn’t moved at all, seeming to be merely an illusion. He turned to go back to observe the battle.

But this time, it was again the spirit of the jade pendant that reminded him, saying, “Lord Phoenix, it seems like this illusion is about to disappear!”

Su Muluo halted, seeing the shadow on the chair gradually becoming transparent, as if about to dissipate. In that moment, as if guided by some force, he subconsciously walked over, lifted his hand, and touched the illusion —

At the same time, the illusion completely dissipated, a faint light merging into Su Muluo’s body, his pupils slightly contracting.

In an instant, he felt as if he had fallen from a great height once again, plunging into a cold abyss. The familiar sensation enveloped him, but this time, he truly seemed to sink into the depths, unable to breathe… It wasn’t until several seconds later that the suffocating feeling slowly faded away.

Boom!

A thunderous roar tore through the dark sky, and heavy rain poured down. Su Muluo realized he was no longer in the valley, or perhaps not in the time a thousand years later, but back thousands of years ago, in the original territory of the Phoenix clan.

He was dr4p3d in a white robe, drenched from head to toe in rain, his ink-black hair clinging wetly to his face. He coughed violently from the lack of oxygen… But as he lifted his head and surveyed his surroundings, he froze.

A dark sky hung over the land, rain washing away everything. He saw devastation all around, the exquisite pavilions reduced to rubble, only fragments remaining.

Mud and water flowed over the charred land, the air still tainted with the smell of blood and burnt flesh. This was supposed to be the ancient territory of the Bird Clan thousands of years ago, yet it resembled little of the vibrant valley of Tujian today.

Su Muluo looked around bewilderedly, intending to search for traces of his kin, only to realize he had been kneeling in the rain for who knows how long. His legs had gone numb, and as soon as he stood up, he collapsed into the cold rainwater.

His hands pressed against the ground, a stabbing pain shot through his fingers and spread throughout his body. When he lowered his head, he saw his hands drenched in blood, nails broken, fingers caked with mud…

Suddenly, a tremendous sense of panic engulfed him. It was a feeling of helplessness, as if everything had already happened and he could only watch, powerless. Ignoring the pain and numbness in his legs, Su Muluo struggled to stand up, staggering through the rain.

With each step, his heart sank deeper. The torrential rain seemed to have washed away everything, and he found nothing, saw nothing, about his people… It was as if they were all gone.

Suddenly, Su Muluo stopped in his tracks.

He saw a feather.

A bloodstained… blue feather.

This feather pierced into Su Muluo’s eyes like a sharp needle, tearing open the bloody truth. All his hopes shattered completely, as if plunging into an icy abyss, uncontrollably trembling.

At the same time, countless images flooded into his mind, his brain felt like it was splitting with pain, and he bent over in agony.

Accompanied by these images rushing in, he saw countless thunderbolts descending from the sky, like a torrential waterfall pouring down from the heavens, instantly swallowing the entire Phoenix territory —

The silent pavilions and towers vanished without a sound, the sorrowful cries of many Phoenixes echoed through the sky, blood-stained feathers fluttered, flesh and bones rapidly disintegrated, layer upon layer of blood splattered on the earth, staining the soil crimson…

This hellish scene lasted only a moment, but within an instant, it was over.

Then came the pouring rain, lasting for days, as if the heavens wept cold tears of destruction, washing everything away… The Phoenix clan also perished in this torrential rain.

His head felt like it was being gnawed by countless insects. Su Muluo knelt to the ground, feeling his internal organs torn apart, his flesh and blood severed, unbearable pain engulfing him.

Why… Why did it have to be like this…

Looking up, tears of blood streamed from the corners of his eyes. His once dark hair now turned white with shock. He wanted to speak, but could only utter hoarse and brief syllables — at that moment, he had even lost the ability to speak.

It was then that he heard a very faint sigh.

The sigh was close, right by his ear, and very familiar. It was his own voice.

“Some things, perhaps it’s better not to know them than to know.”

The voice spoke softly,

“Thousands of years ago, my clan was destroyed by the Heavenly Dao. I expended all my Nirvana power but couldn’t save them… It was then that I glimpsed some secrets of the Heavenly Dao.”

“Later, I sealed away my memories and part of my power, entering a deep slumber. However, I advise you not to unlock all the seals, because the final truth may not be what you wish to know.”

“But if one day he faces danger and your current power cannot protect him… then unlock the last seal.”

“Even if everything cannot be undone, at least you can save him.”

The voice faded gradually from Su Muluo’s ears. He clenched his fists tightly, feeling as if he was submerged in icy water, chilling him to the bone.

Those were words left to him by himself from thousands of years ago, and the “he” in the last sentence referred to Long Ling.

Su Muluo could even recall his expression back then, one of resignation and sadness… But why?

Why did he seal his own memories and specifically warn himself not to unlock the final seal?

And the secrets of the Heavenly Dao… were they related to him? Were they related to the demise of the Phoenix clan, and why he was the only Phoenix left?

Su Muluo’s mind felt like it was about to split apart. In those few short seconds, countless questions flashed through his mind. It was as if he had touched upon another world, one that he had never encountered before but was extremely perilous…

Cold sweat dripped from his forehead, his vision began to darken, and as the scenes of that great rain and the Phoenix territory faded from his sight, he finally lost consciousness and fell down.

Boom!

The sound of mountains collapsing echoed through the entire valley. A golden dragon slammed heavily into a cliff, causing the rocks beneath it to crumble inch by inch, turning into rubble.

It let out a cry of pain and anger. Its tough scales were torn off forcibly, revealing a deep wound on its abdomen that exposed bone, blood splattering and forming a bloody rain in the valley.

“If my power had fully recovered, how could I let you, you lowly…”

The golden dragon gritted its teeth, looking up at the black dragon towering above it with deep hatred in its eyes.

“Just you wait!”

Before finishing its words, the golden dragon disappeared from its original spot, while the black dragon did not pursue.

Although it had severely wounded the golden dragon, it too was injured. Just like how the golden dragon couldn’t kill it, it couldn’t easily kill the other either.

Moreover, there was something more important—just now, it sensed no trace of the Phoenix.

Returning to the small building with its dragon bones, the black dragon landed and reverted to its human form.

“Phoenix!” Seeing his Phoenix lying on the ground, his expression changed suddenly. He rushed over and held Su Muluo in his arms. “What happened to him?!”

The latter half was spoken to the spirit of the jade pendant. When Su Muluo passed out, the spirit transformed into a barrier to protect him, and now seeing Long Ling, it immediately recounted everything that had just happened.

“Lord Phoenix saw the apparition left behind from thousands of years ago, walked over to it, and stood there motionless. I called out to him many times, but he seemed not to hear me.” The spirit of the jade pendant said, “Just now, he suddenly passed out.”

After finishing speaking, it observed Long Ling’s condition and hesitated, “Wait, Lord Long Ling… are you injured?”

Long Ling did not speak. Just now, he had noticed that something had happened to the Phoenix. Even if he had to be injured, he had to deliver a fatal blow to the golden dragon quickly.

And now, his Phoenix lay in his arms, eyes tightly closed, perhaps trapped in a nightmare, with a pained expression.

Long Ling lowered his head and gently rubbed Su Muluo’s soft face against his own ear, gently coaxing him until his Phoenix’s expression eased somewhat, then he lifted him up.

When the man stood up, his eyes were dark, like a sea about to set off a storm, so much so that even the spirit of the jade pendant felt fear.

It silently shrank back and returned to the jade pendant.

Ignoring it, Long Ling hugged his Phoenix and turned away.

Chapter 18

A long time ago, Cheng Sen taught Jiang Tongyan a proverb—to engage in rivalry with others is an endless joy.

Jiang Tongyan had kept this sentence in mind for many years, and now he really understood how ‘joyful’ this was.

When he said, ‘I’ll eat, and you watch,’ he could almost feel Qian Xiaoke’s anger through the telephone receiver. The anger was burning, but it couldn’t burn him.

       Very cool.

       Very exciting.

However, Jiang Tongyan didn’t really want to torture Qian Xiaoke like this. He was still a good person, just teasing that kid.

But Qian Xiaoke took it seriously, and her hair was practically about to be burned off by her anger.

“Okay Chairman Jiang. It’s not a problem, Chairman Jiang. Chairman Jiang, what do you want to eat?” Qian Xiaoke said with a smile on his face, but there was a knife hidden in his smile.

“All is fine,” Jiang Tongyan said, “Something tasty, two servings.”

“Two servings?” Qian Xiaoke almost changed his opinion of him—if Jiang Tongyan hadn’t said the last sentence.

Jiang Tongyan said, “Yes, I have had a very good appetite recently; one serving is not enough for me.”

Qian Xiaoke smiled, “Okay Chairman Jiang. It’s not a problem, Chairman Jiang.”

He thought about it, and he would carry a controlled knife1Controlled knives are a general term used by the judicial authorities of the People’s Republic of China to refer to certain knives that can cause significant harm with him later. If he could pass the subway security check smoothly, he would use the controlled knife to understand Jiang Tongyan.

As for what controlled knife he finally chose—a knife made of paper.

Qian Xiaoke put the ‘knife’ into his schoolbag and set off on the mission Chairman Cheng had given him.

He passed the subway security check smoothly, and Qian Xiaoke felt that it was God’s will and that God wanted him to kill Jiang Tongyan.

He took the subway for more than 30 minutes and walked for five minutes before finally arriving downstairs at Jiang Tongyan’s hotel.

Qian Xiaoke stood by the road and hesitated momentarily, then bought two spicy hot pots and went upstairs.

He deliberately left the receipt for the spicy hot pot; after all, he had to get it reimbursed.

Qian Xiaoke went upstairs to find Jiang Tongyan with his black schoolbag on his shoulder and two spicy hot pots in his hands. In the five-star hotel, wherever he walked, the aroma of a spicy hot pot filled the air.

Before he knocked on the door, Jiang Tongyan knew he had come. After all, the taste of spicy hot pot was too strong.

However, Chairman Jiang was Chairman Jiang after all. He was sitting as steady as a mountain.

Qian Xiaoke knocked on the door, but Jiang Tongyan didn’t move.

Qian Xiaoke knocked on the door, but Jiang Tongyan still didn’t move.

Qian Xiaoke, “Oh, the spicy hot pot bag is broken!”

Jiang Tongyan opened the door quickly.

       Qian Xiaoke, “…Tsk!”

Jiang Tongyan knew he had been tricked, but he wasn’t annoyed. He smiled and let the person in.

“Why did you buy spicy hot pot again?” Jiang Tongyan said, “I saw on the internet that eating this thing all the time is unhealthy.”

“If you don’t want to eat it, forget it.” Qian Xiaoke said, “I did it on purpose.”

I did it on purpose to make you unhealthy!

It’s best if you have diarrhoea!

Jiang Tongyan wanted to laugh when he saw this energy. He found that in his eyes, Qian Xiaoke was a comedian. When he was in a bad mood, he would laugh immediately when he saw this person.

“Okay, it’s been bought, so let’s eat it.” Jiang Tongyan asked him to put the spicy hot pot on the table, and he took out two cans of iced cola from the refrigerator.

Qian Xiaoke’s eyes began to light up when he saw the iced cola, but he knew very well that he couldn’t casually drink the drinks given by a stranger.

Although Jiang Tongyan was no longer a ‘stranger’ to him strictly speaking—not only was he not strange, but he was also familiar with him and had kissed and touched him—Qian Xiaoke still didn’t dare to drink it casually. This guy took it out of the refrigerator in his room. Who knows if he secretly added something to it with bad intentions!

       Qian Xiaoke was very cautious!

The most careless thing in his life was that time when he got drunk.

The past was too painful to recall, and he didn’t want to mention it again.

Qian Xiaoke tensed his nerves and body at this moment and stood there properly, ready to watch Jiang Tongyan eat, then quickly grab him and leave after eating.

“Why are you standing? If others don’t know, one might think I’m abusing you.” Jiang Tongyan put a can of iced cola on the table before Qian Xiaole, “Sit down.”

       Do it?

Qian Xiaoke’s body trembled: He wants to do that to me again?

Qian Xiaoke, who obviously thought wrongly, grabbed his schoolbag strap and suddenly remembered that he brought a ‘controlled knife’.

Of course, Qian Xiaoke was not really a fool. He knew that his so-called ‘controlled knife’ could only be used for fun. However, at this moment, he really hoped that it was real and it could kill with one blow.

“What’s wrong with you?” Jiang Tongyan sat down with a smile and opened the takeaway bag, “Wow, this is a lot.”

Jiang Tongyan looked up at Qian Xiaoke, “I didn’t expect this spicy hot pot to be so much, tsk, I can’t seem to finish it.”

Qian Xiaoke looked at him sideways and began to wonder: What does he mean? Is he trying to buy my body with a spicy hot pot?

“Hey, have you eaten?” Jiang Tongyan knew that Qian Xiaoke definitely didn’t eat, because when he called, Qian Xiaoke hadn’t reached lunch break yet, and Qian Xiaoke left after hanging up the phone. Jiang Tongyan counted the time with his fingers and guessed that this guy must be hungry at this moment.

“I…” Qian Xiaoke had not eaten; Qian Xiaoke was starving to death.

However, Qian Xiaoke was a man of integrity. He wouldn’t sell his body for a spicy hot pot.

It was just a spicy hot pot. He can afford it himself!

“You haven’t eaten yet?” Jiang Tongyan put the extra chopsticks on another takeout box, “Sit down and eat together.”

Qian Xiaoke took two steps back cautiously.

Jiang Tongyan: “…This is what you bought. Could it be that you poisoned it?”

Qian Xiaoke might want to, but he had the desire without the courage—and no means even to buy poison if he dared.

“I’m not you,” Qian Xiaoke said, “I don’t do that kind of dirty things.”

Jiang Tongyan was speechless, thinking: How am I dirty?

“By the way,” Qian Xiaoke suddenly took another half step forward, “When will you pay me back the eight yuan you owe me?”

Jiang Tongyan laughed, but he didn’t expect that this guy would still remember the eight yuan.

“I can pay you back now,” Jiang Tongyan said, “Then when will you pay me back the twenty dollars you owe me?”

“When did I owe you twenty dollars?” Qian Xiaoke was almost mad at this man, “Do you still have any shame left?”

“Hey? Does your Chairman Cheng know that you are talking to me like this?” Jiang Tongyan patted the table, “Sit down and eat, and I will pay you after you finish eating.”

Qian Xiaoke was a man of integrity, “No!”

“No?” Jiang Tongyan smiled, “If you don’t accompany me to eat this meal, I will definitely not pay you back the eight dollars, and you still owe me twenty dollars. In addition, you just spoke rudely to me. I am going to complain about you and let Chairman Cheng deduct your salary!”

The next second, Qian Xiaoke’s ‘integrity’ flew away. He sat directly next to Jiang Tongyan, picked up the chopsticks, and opened the takeaway box.

Actually, he was really starving to death.

Jiang Tongyan held back his laughter and looked at him with satisfaction, then opened the cola for him  and put it next to him.

Qian Xiaoke got the advantage but still wanted to act cute, “I said I don’t want to eat it, but you forced me to eat it! You really…”

He swallowed the lettuce in his mouth, “Really have bad intentions!”

Jiang Tongyan laughed, “I have bad intentions? I’m afraid you are the one who has bad intentions!”

Qian Xiaoke looked at him suspiciously.

“How about you try it first? What if you’ve actually slipped some knockout drug in there and planned to r4p3 me? What would I do then?”

Qian Xiaoke almost laughed and fainted. He said breathlessly, “Me? r4p3 you? Am I crazy? How bad must my brain be to r4p3 an impotent person!”

After saying that, he watched Jiang Tongyan’s face change. The next second, a voice came to Qian Xiaoke’s mind: Qian Xiaoke, you are finished.

Chapter 87 – The master is poisoned

Chapter 87 (Extra 10)

“Master.”

Yu Wuxia’s voice trembled as he looked steadily at Jiaheng.

Jiaheng’s face burned with heat, flushed with embarrassment. No, his entire body was flushed, his eyes shimmering with a watery glow, reflecting the flickering flames, inexplicably making his eyes appear dazzling and captivating, stirring the soul.

“You ungrateful disciple.” Jiaheng’s lips hesitated for a long time, racking his brains to come up with just this one reproachful phrase, “Turn me back now!”

“Master… it wasn’t me who changed you.” Yu Wuxia spread his hands, looking innocent.

“If it wasn’t you, then how… how did I end up like this?” Jiaheng saw Yu Wuxia moving closer to him. Instinctively, he retreated, wanting to put some distance between them. He didn’t know what he had bumped into, but suddenly a sharp pain came from his tailbone.

He instinctively let out an “ah” and shrank back, turning around to see an upright dried branch on the ground. The branch had pierced the skin near his tailbone, leaving a faint trace of blood.

Yu Wuxia also saw this, his expression changing slightly. He stepped forward to support Jiaheng’s arm. “Master, don’t move.”

Jiaheng, as if scalded, pushed Yu Wuxia’s hand away.

When Yu Wuxia got close, the aura surrounding him made Jiaheng’s heartbeat erratic, as if he was trapped, unable to breathe.

“Don’t come near me.”

Yu Wuxia had no choice but to say, “Alright, Master, I won’t come near you. But let me take a look at your injury first.”

Perhaps fearing Jiaheng would refuse, Yu Wuxia added a request difficult to decline, “Master, I’ll lend you my robe to cover yourself, so you won’t feel embarrassed.”

Jiaheng: “Is this robe conjured by magic?”

Yu Wuxia shook his head. “No, maybe when I transformed into a relic, I was wearing clothes, so the clothes remained after I changed form.”

Jiaheng said no more, took Yu Wuxia’s robe, and put it on. With a cold expression, he said, “Wipe your nosebleed.”

Yu Wuxia quickly lowered his head to wipe his nose, only then realizing that he was actually having a nosebleed!

He glanced awkwardly at Jiaheng. The loose-fitting robe clung to Jiaheng, outlining his slender figure. Since he didn’t give Jiaheng the trousers, Jiaheng’s two slender, toned calves were exposed under the hem.

Yu Wuxia swallowed hard, reluctantly shifting his gaze away. “Master, there are many poisonous trees in this mountain. I’m afraid you accidentally touched a poisonous branch just now. If you got poisoned by the tree sap, it could be life-threatening. Please let me check.”

Jiaheng originally didn’t believe Yu Wuxia, but the wound at his tailbone felt hot, with a faint stinging spreading out, indeed like signs of poisoning…

He blushed, his lips pressed tight, caught in a dilemma.

Yu Wuxia said, “Master, lie down. I’ll only check your wound, nothing else. Besides, we’re both men, we should be straightforward about this.”

Jiaheng felt reproached, as if his modesty implied he had ulterior motives. He couldn’t help but glare at Yu Wuxia. Unnoticed, Yu Wuxia had already moved closer, his long arms lightly encircling Jiaheng’s waist.

“Master, just lie down.”

Above his ear was a bewitching voice.

“I only need a quick look.”

Jiaheng believed him, lying down in Yu Wuxia’s arms, not noticing that at the moment he lay down, Yu Wuxia’s eyes filled with an inky black desire, his intense gaze practically materializing on Jiaheng’s waist.

He gently lifted the hem of the inner garment, seeing the raised lines below the tailbone, his breathing suddenly irregular, another nosebleed bursting forth. Calmly wiping it away, his gaze nearly greedy, inching upward, resting on the spot pierced by the branch.

The wound was rather coincidental.

Right below the tailbone.

He reached out, touching the wound, feeling Jiaheng’s body suddenly tense. He steadied his breath, “Master, don’t worry. This wound looks strange, turning black. The branch might indeed be poisonous.”

Jiaheng didn’t speak, trying to get up, but Yu Wuxia lightly pressed on his waist. He felt that wherever Yu Wuxia touched, it was particularly hot, even more so than the wound.

“Master, don’t move. Let me examine it further.”

Yu Wuxia bent down, his breath falling on the area above Jiaheng’s tailbone. Jiaheng’s breath hitched, his hands instinctively grasping, only to find he was holding Yu Wuxia’s trousers, quickly letting go.

Behind him, Yu Wuxia’s voice sounded again.

“This black blood is indeed poison. I need to help you suck it out.”

“…” Jiaheng.

Before Jiaheng could react, Yu Wuxia’s lips descended. Jiaheng felt as if scalded, wanting to get up, but Yu Wuxia held down the back of his neck.

With just one wrist, he couldn’t move.

His head was pressed against Yu Wuxia’s leg. Yu Wuxia bent down, focused on “sucking” out the poison.

He could even feel the shape of the other’s full lips, like peach blossom petals, opening and closing on that nearly hidden spot.

Inexplicably, his body trembled, eyes filling with tears, his throat choked with words of refusal that couldn’t come out.

If only… if only he had known he needed to continue cultivating, he wouldn’t have ended up like this, utterly unable to resist.

A bizarre thought flashed through his mind: if Yu Wuxia decided to use force now, he wouldn’t be able to stop him.

Yu Wuxia saw the redness all over Jiaheng’s body and his own eyes turned red as well. He forced himself to look away from the swelling at the base of Jiaheng’s spine.

The wound was initially small, but after a few licks, it had become swollen and red. Of course, there was no poison. The branch wasn’t poisonous either; Yu Wuxia had only used it to scare Jiaheng.

To make Jiaheng believe him, Yu Wuxia even cast a spell to make the wound feel like it was burning.

He had deceived Jiaheng, not just about this, but also about having regained a portion of his cultivation after taking on human form. Simple spells were within his capability.

But he couldn’t let Jiaheng know now, or Jiaheng would give him the cold shoulder again.

Seeing it was enough, he released Jiaheng’s hem. “Master, it’s done.”

Jiaheng sat up, his hands pressed against Yu Wuxia’s chest, feeling the defined, strong muscles that seemed to twitch under his touch. Startled, he quickly pulled his hands back.

Somehow, all the strength seemed to leave his body, and he collapsed back into Yu Wuxia’s embrace.

Yu Wuxia chuckled softly, “Master, in the human world, this would be called ‘throwing yourself into someone’s arms.'”

“You… stop talking nonsense.” Jiaheng’s face turned red, and he could only manage this one sentence.

Yu Wuxia smiled, supporting Jiaheng. If he had known that his master’s cold demeanor was due to his lack of eloquence, he would have used words to conquer him long ago.

“Master, your dizziness is because the poison hasn’t been completely extracted. I need to help you draw it out once a day until it’s all gone.”

Jiaheng pulled his robe tighter, his brow furrowing as he looked at Yu Wuxia suspiciously.

He felt Yu Wuxia was deceiving him, taking advantage of him, but when he met Yu Wuxia’s “honest and upright” gaze, he felt like he was being paranoid.

After all, what was there to covet in that place?

Jiaheng asked, “Isn’t there a way to remove the poison all at once?”

“No, so it’s better for me to check on you daily, Master.”

Jiaheng said no more. The spot where the branch had pierced him didn’t feel like an ordinary wound; it burned, as if some toxin remained.

He bit his lip, uncertain, and asked again, “You really haven’t regained your cultivation?”

“Mm,” Yu Wuxia replied confidently.

He usually couldn’t lie in front of Jiaheng, but now his lust had emboldened him, making him unusually calm.

“Then how did I suddenly return to human form?” Jiaheng muttered to himself, puzzled.

After becoming a tiger, he had no desire to cultivate back into human form.

When Yu Wuxia fell into the demonic path, the Immortal had warned Jiaheng that form is emptiness, and emptiness is form. By losing form, one loses desire and thought.

So Jiaheng believed his human face caused Yu Wuxia’s wicked thoughts. He transformed into an aged figure, later a tiger, which he accepted and no longer cared about appearances.

Yu Wuxia reassured him, “Master, you were once an Immortal of the Thirty-Three Heavens. Your transformation is different from an ordinary tiger’s. You don’t need to worry. Whether in tiger or human form, your true nature remains the same. Master, you shouldn’t be troubled by this.”

“…” Jiaheng.

He hadn’t expected to be lectured by his disciple one day. He shot a glance at Yu Wuxia, turned his back to him, and closed his eyes, unwilling to engage further.

Suddenly, something came to mind, and he reluctantly said, “I heard you. I’m sleepy.”

He feared that if he didn’t respond, Yu Wuxia would kiss him again.

Yu Wuxia’s voice echoed in the cave, tinged with amusement, “Alright.” After a pause, Yu Wuxia added, “Master, sleep well.”

Jiaheng didn’t actually sleep well. His mind was chaotic, unable to shake off the image of Yu Wuxia kissing his tailbone.

He didn’t feel repulsed; rather, it felt tingly and numb, reminding him of the black panther Yu Wuxia once transformed into in the Thirty-Three Heavens.

He also remembered their time doing good deeds in the human world, how Yu Wuxia held his hand when they descended the mountain.

He thought about many things—growing clarity in his affection, unresolved mysteries.

The next morning, when Yu Wuxia woke up, he saw Jiaheng standing outside the cave, blending into the white mist.

Yu Wuxia’s heart tightened. He approached and called out, “Master.”

Jiaheng responded, looking up at the mist-covered morning light, “Follow me.”

Yu Wuxia didn’t ask any questions and followed Jiaheng down the mountain. The two walked in silence until noon, when Jiaheng finally stopped.

Looking at the calm river before him, Yu Wuxia suddenly remembered this place.

It was where they first descended the mountain to do good deeds, and where his faith in the Immortal first wavered.

“Do you remember the father who was trapped in a cycle because he saved his daughter in the flood instead of the pregnant woman?”

“Yes.”

“I told you that once you advanced in your cultivation, you’d understand the reason. But it became a knot in your heart instead.”

Hearing this, Yu Wuxia’s face reddened slightly.

Jiaheng sighed, “You only saw the father’s plight and felt indignant for him, but you didn’t see the entanglement between the father and the pregnant woman. Initially, the father brought his daughter here to escape a plague. It was they who spread the disease. The villagers despised them and drove them into the forest. Only the pregnant woman, occasionally kind, brought them food.”

“Later, when the flood came, the father and daughter were trapped in a landslide. It was the pregnant woman who brought them to the shore. But as the floodwaters rose, the bridge collapsed, and the pregnant woman and the man’s daughter both fell into the water.”

“The man didn’t save the pregnant woman, who was within reach, but instead swam to the center of the lake to save his daughter. That’s why the pregnant woman’s resentment was so strong—it trapped the man because she just wanted him to save her once.”

Yu Wuxia looked up at the calm surface of the lake. The resentment had dissipated. It seemed that after countless cycles, the father finally had an epiphany and broke the pregnant woman’s curse.

Or perhaps it was the pregnant woman who let go.

In this world, good deeds don’t always yield good outcomes.

They both needed to let go.

Only by letting go could they be reborn.

Chapter 13

After that, everything became a torment. Chu Yichen’s words were like a sharp sword hanging over his head, making him so panicked that he couldn’t eat anything and couldn’t sleep at night. He was thinking about how to escape from the old house every moment.

As soon as he left the room, there were two men in black following him, like shadows that couldn’t be shaken off. All the bodyguards in the main house who were familiar with him in the past were replaced. They all treated him respectfully but ignored any of his requests. It was impossible to get a mobile phone.

After trying many methods, he finally came to the conclusion that he couldn’t escape at all.

What with this ridiculous and weird situation? He was like a sacrifice, trapped in the devil’s castle and might be eaten at any time. Seeing that the big devil’s return was approaching, Chu Yunhan was completely panicked.

Since all other methods were useless, the only option left was to break through.

He found a reason and ordered two bodyguards to move flowers in the yard. He knocked one out cleanly with a flower pot and then used the fighting skills he had learned to knock down the other. He hadn’t done physical training for a long time, and he had been tortured so hard by Chu Yichen before that his body hadn’t recovered yet. He was out of breath for a while just dealing with two people.

CChu Yunhan remembered that there was a rockery in the backyard close to the wall. After winding through several obstacles, he finally reached his destination. Seeing that there was no guard, he suddenly felt a surge of joy in his heart. After a lot of effort, he climbed up the wall, only to see Bai Xiao standing outside the wall, holding his arms and looking up at him, showing his fangs, and smiled sarcastically, “Seeing you trying so hard to escape, I really don’t want to let them disturb you. However, the young master has instructed you not to leave this courtyard. So, would you like to retreat on your own, or should I lend you a hand?”

The little flame of hope that Chu Yunhan had just ignited while climbing on the wall was snuffed out, and he almost spit out a mouthful of blood. He should have realised earlier that under Chu Yichen’s rule, there could never be a situation where the guards were lax. It must have been Bai Xiao who deliberately dismissed the guards to watch him struggle. Like his master, this guy was also a vengeful guy. He knocked him out last time, and now he was waiting to see him make a fool of himself. Bai Xiao’s skills were among the best in the Black Eagle Club. If Bai Xiao hadn’t been defenceless, he would never have succeeded last time.

However, the arrow had to be fired when it was on the string. It would definitely not end well if he was caught back. Even if he knew he was no match, all he could do was force his way in and try it.

He jumped down from the wall, but his landing was unstable. He stumbled and fell to the ground.

“Young Master Yun, I think you’d better save some energy; Young Master will return in the evening.” Bai Xiao didn’t move even a little, taunting him leisurely. There was something in these ambiguous words that made Chu Yunhan’s face burn hot, and he kicked the opponent.

Although it was called a duel, it was more like a sparring session. Bai Xiao didn’t even fight back, simply acting as a sparring partner, effortlessly deflecting Chu Yunhan’s attacks. Chu Yunhan knew his stamina was lacking and that he wouldn’t be able to defeat Bai Xiao anytime soon, making him increasingly anxious and causing him to make numerous mistakes.

After a few moves, Bai Xiao grabbed his arm and twisted it neatly behind his back. The pain made him grimace, and said, “Damn it, let go!”

“Young Master has instructed you to stay home obediently. Please go back, alright?”

This coaxing attitude made Chu Yunhan furious. He gritted his teeth and said, “So obedient to Chu Yichen, huh? Did he give you a bone to chew on? You just don’t want to be a good person, but you just have to be a dog for that psycho!” Just after he finished his words, there was a huge pain in his arm. He couldn’t help but cry out in pain.

Bai Xiao’s gloomy voice came from behind, “Young Master Yun, you should be lucky that I am obedient. Otherwise, based on what you did to him, I would never let you live.”

“Ugh…” The bone-crushing pain made Chu Yunhan’s face turn pale, rendering him speechless. Soon, several bodyguards surrounded him and dragged him back to the room. They didn’t even let him leave this time, and dinner was brought directly to his room.

As time passed by, the anxiety and restlessness grew silently and rapidly like vines, entangled him until he couldn’t breathe. When there was a knock on the door, he jumped up from the sofa like a fish and looked nervously at Du Chuan who appeared at the door.

“Young master asks you to go to the basement.”

There was a very large basement under the main house of the Chu family’s old house. Special materials were used in the construction, making it soundproof, waterproof, and so sturdy it could withstand missiles. Previously, the old man used it as a conference room to discuss the secret affairs of the Black Eagle Groups. Later, Chu Yu constructed a similar one under the Golden Eagle headquarters for meetings, leaving this one unused.

The black steel door of the basement added a mysterious and eerie atmosphere to the room. When Chu Yunhan and his siblings were children, they often went there to ‘explore’ or play games. He vividly remembered one time when he, Chu Yichen, and Chu Minran were playing a game of tag, and the bodyguards, not paying attention, accidentally locked all three of them inside. The lights went out, leaving them in complete darkness. Terrified, Chu Yunhan kept banging on the door while Minran cried beside him. Meanwhile, Chu Yichen held Minran and comforted Minran while telling Chu Yunhan to conserve his energy and stop shouting in vain. The three of them waited quietly until dinner time when a servant finally came to find them.

Looking back, Chu Yichen showed a maturity and calmness that was inconsistent with his age as a child. In many cases, he was more like an elder brother than him. Perhaps this was why the old man chose him as his successor. It was a pity that he was always unwilling to admit it in the past and had even fantasised about replacing him.

Chu Yunhan smiled bitterly and pushed open the heavy door.

The sensor lights gradually lit up row by row. He looked at the basement, which had been transformed beyond recognition, and froze in place.

The first thing that caught his eye was the single black sofa that sat in the middle of the basement. Then, there was the tall torture rack standing near it, the metal material glowing coldly under the lamp. The walls were decorated with soft cloth, and high up were many whips hanging neatly in different colours and styles. The lower part was full of half-half-high cabinets. When Chu Yunhan stepped in, he discovered that the floor was covered with thick cashmere carpet. He opened the cabinet drawer closest to him and felt a chill all over his body.

Various handcuffs were placed inside, including steel ring ones, rubber ones, and fabric materials with lace edges. There were keys next to the handcuffs, arranged neatly by serial number. He opened a different cabinet, and various gags appeared before him. Next, there were electric toys of various sizes and weird shapes. Chu Yunhan looked at one of the thick spiral massage sticks. That night flashed through his mind, and he slammed the drawer shut, unwilling to look at it again.

Some large appliances were placed in the corner of the basement, including a broken life-size doll, a wooden thing that looked like a horse, several massage tables of different styles, and some weird-looking things. Chu Yunhan couldn’t guess the purpose and just thought it was somewhat scary.

Inside the basement, two smaller rooms were sectioned off with tempered glass. One seemed to be a dressing room filled with various men’s clothing. Among them, a few items appeared to be made of rubber. On the shelves were numerous pieces of lingerie and accessories that resembled jewellery. The other room was a bathroom with a dry and wet separation design. It featured a large, round massage bathtub, while the shower area had a movable plastic chair. Beside the toilet hung a pressure sprayer, adding an unusual touch to the setup.

He already had a rough idea of what this place was, and he felt his heart grow cold. He was about to leave, but when he turned around and saw the person standing at the door, he was so frightened that he took half a step back, “Chu…Chu Yichen…” He was so frightened that he couldn’t speak clearly.

The man wore a black long-sleeved shirt, and under the light, his skin appeared strikingly pale, reminiscent of a handsome yet sinister vampire. He exuded an aura of cold detachment, a chilling presence that warned others to stay away.

“You’ve had a tour. Did you like it?” Chu Yichen looked at him.

“Why is this place… like this?” Chu Yunhan had an answer in his mind, but he still couldn’t help but ask.

“Since the day I began my education as an heir, I’ve learned to control my emotions. As the decision-maker of the Chu family, I cannot afford any irrational actions. Every word, every move, every decision requires deep contemplation, yet often, the time given for this reflection is limited. This forces me to always maintain a state of being able to make ‘correct decisions’ while also keeping everything firmly under my control. This extreme control over myself and others brings immense pressure, nearly destroying me.” The man picked up a horizontally placed rigid riding crop from the wall, about sixty to seventy centimetres long, with an exquisitely engraved silver handle and a soft leather tip at the end. He tapped the whip against his palm and continued, “I need a way to release this pressure while also satisfying my desire for control. Therefore, BDSM is my best option.”

Chu Yunhan looked around and swallowed hard. Even if he didn’t know what BDSM was, he could understand it just by looking at the furnishings in the house. He recalled what Chu Yichen had done to him that night and then thought about the purpose of calling him here. Suddenly, he felt a bad premonition in his heart.

Just listen to Chu Yichen continue to say, “BDSM includes three components: bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism. Compared to SM, I prefer deriving pleasure from the first two. In the ‘dominance and submission’ relationship, the dominant is referred to as ‘dom,’ and the submissive is referred to as ‘sub.’ A further extension of this relationship is called the master-slave relationship. The dom and sub evolve into a master and a slave, representing the party that holds power versus the party that has lost power, the one issuing commands versus the one executing them, the one responsible for training versus the one receiving training. I am a pure dom, existing as the dominant party, and need to engage in BDSM sexual play together with a sub.”

Chu Yunhan’s heart beat like a drum, and he said dryly, “Your hobby is quite…quite special. I heard that there are people who do this in the circle. Why don’t I help you inquire and see if they know anyone interested in this area? I can introduce some girls to you.”

Chu Yichen looked at him with his pitch-black eyes, “Unfortunately, I am a homosexual. The opposite sex does not arouse my interest. And as the head of the Chu family, I need a safe and reliable sexual partner to ensure that all his actions are always under my control.” The man turned the whip in his hand and said calmly, “Now you should understand why I asked you to come here.”

Chapter 65

Zhan Xiusong came less than a week after Zhan Xueqing came.

Zhan Xiusong was actually much thinner than when he came during the National Day holiday. When his grandmother saw him, she frowned and asked him why he had lost weight.

“No, I haven’t lost much weight,” Zhan Xiusong said while raising his hand to push his glasses. His cheeks were obviously sunken, and his originally delicate outline had begun to show.

Grandma looked at him carefully, “No, you’ve lost weight. You must eat more tonight.”

So when it was time for dinner, Auntie Luo brought out a large plate of bright red braised pig’s feet from the kitchen. Grandma put the plate directly in front of Zhan Xiusong and said, “Songsong, you should eat more.”

Zhan Xiusong stared at the braised pig’s feet and swallowed his saliva. He lowered his head, poked the white rice in the bowl with chopsticks and said, “I don’t like this.”

Zhan Weiyang sat a little further away. He stretched out his hand to pick up half a pig’s foot but failed to reach it. He silently took back the chopsticks, poked in the rice bowl, and changed to pick up another dish.

Pei Qing reached out and helped him pick up a braised pig’s feet and put it in the bowl.

Zhan Weiyang said quickly, “Thank you.”

Pei Qing said, “Eat it. I’ll give you another after you finish eating.”

Zhan Weiyang lowered his head and began to chew the pig’s feet seriously.

Zhan Weiguang looked at Zhan Xiusong for a while, then turned to Grandma and said, “He must be dieting.”

Zhan Xiusong immediately raised his head and denied it, “I’m not dieting.”

Zhan Xueqing couldn’t help laughing and asked him, “How come you lost so much weight if you are not dieting?”

Zhan Xiusong didn’t pick up many dishes and didn’t eat the rice in the bowl too attentively. He said, “Studying in high school is harder than before, and I lost weight unconsciously.”

Grandma was sitting on the side. When she heard him say that, she immediately said, “Then you have to eat more. Eat some pig’s feet quickly.”

Zhan Xiusong looked at the braised pig’s feet again but still didn’t reach for his chopsticks.

Zhan Weiguang suddenly stood up, picked up the entire plate of pig’s feet, and then used chopsticks to distribute one to everyone. When he distributed it to the end, he saw that there were still two left on the plate. He asked Zhan Weiyang, “Do you want to eat more?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

He gave Zhan Weiyang one more, and when he put the plate back on the table, he said, “Leave the remaining one for Dad, Zhan Xiusong doesn’t like it anyway.”

Zhan Xiusong turned away and said without even looking at him, “I don’t like it indeed.”

When they were halfway through their meal, Zhan Pengcheng came back from outside in a hurry. He washed his hands and sat down at the table. He took the bowl and chopsticks Auntie Luo handed to him. He looked at Zhan Xiusong and said, “Why did Xiusong lose so much weight?”

       Zhan Xiusong hummed vaguely.

Zhan Pengcheng asked him, “Is it because you study too hard? Take advantage of the holiday now and eat more.” After saying that, he saw the last braised pig’s foot left on the table and stretched out his chopsticks to pick it up in Zhan Xiusong’s bowl.

Zhan Xiusong opened his mouth but didn’t have time to refuse.

Zhan Weiguang said at this time, “He said he doesn’t like it.”

“Why doesn’t he like it?” Zhan Pengcheng said, “He obviously likes it very much! Right, Xiusong?”

For a whole night, Zhan Xiusong was torn between inner and outer struggles. On the one hand, he couldn’t help wanting to eat the braised pig’s feet, but on the other hand, he warned himself not to waste the results of his diet and told himself to be sure to hold back. In the end, Zhan Pengcheng directly put the pig’s feet into his bowl.

He thought the food was already in his bowl, and he couldn’t take it out to give it to others if he didn’t eat it, so he found a very reasonable excuse to comfort himself and just eat one and then go to exercise to consume it.

He picked up the pig’s feet and put it into his mouth. He took a quick bite, and said to Zhan Pengcheng, “The braised ones at home are still delicious, thank you Uncle.”

Zhan Pengcheng looked at him with a smile, “If you like it, let Auntie Luo continue to make it for you tomorrow, and then eat more.”

Zhan Xiusong wanted to say no, but when he looked up, he saw Zhan Weiguang and Zhan Xueqing looking at him with a smile. He lowered his head and said nothing.

Zhan Weiguang said, “If you want to diet, then go diet. What’s so bad about admitting it?”

Zhan Xiusong snorted and whispered, “What’s your business?”

After everyone finished their meal, they didn’t rush to leave the table and sat next to Zhan Pengcheng.

Zhan Pengcheng said while eating, “Xiusong is here today. Do you want to go out and play tomorrow? Pei Qing can drive and go wherever you guys want to go, and Weiguang will be responsible for entertaining everyone.”

Zhan Weiguang said, “I’m fine with both. Let’s see where you guys want to go and play.”

Zhan Pengcheng said to them, “You guys go and discuss it.” After that, he whispered to Zhan Weiguang, “Don’t let them spend money.”

       Zhan Weiguang nodded.

After eating, Zhan Xiusong went upstairs and enthusiastically gathered everyone in Zhan Weiguang’s room to discuss where to go tomorrow.

Zhan Xueqing was also very interested and mentioned several places, but what she hoped most was to go shopping in the city centre and then find a good Japanese restaurant for lunch.

Zhan Xiusong didn’t quite agree with Zhan Xueqing’s opinion, but he didn’t say anything. He just looked at the others and said, “I don’t care. You decide.” He thought that the others probably didn’t want to go shopping.

Zhan Weiyang stood by the door and leaned against the wall. His body swaying back and forth as he thought about it and said, “I don’t want to go out.”

He was not very interested in what they discussed, so he decided to stay home and play games.

Pei Qing thought about it and asked him, “How about we have lunch at noon and go play badminton in the afternoon?”

       Zhan Weiyang shook his head.

Pei Qing asked again, “Visit the museum?”

Zhan Weiyang still shook his head.

Pei Qing felt that he really didn’t want to go out. When he was about to speak, he heard Zhan Xueqing say, “Then don’t force Yangyang. Let Yangyang rest at home.”

Zhan Xueqing sat on the chair in front of Zhan Weiguang’s desk with two thin legs stretched forward, looking at Zhan Weiyang gently.

Pei Qing suddenly said, “Then I won’t go out either. Weiguang can drive, right?”

Zhan Weiguang was stunned and a little surprised, “Why don’t you go?”

Pei Qing said, “There’s no place I want to go.”

Zhan Weiguang asked him, “Where do you want to go? Tell us, and we can discuss it.”

Pei Qing smiled and shook his head.

“Why not?” Zhan Xueqing asked him, her tone and expression becoming serious, “Just tell us where you want to go. What do you mean by this now?”

Zhan Weiguang and Zhan Xiusong both looked at Zhan Xueqing, and they didn’t know what was going on. The atmosphere suddenly became a little awkward.

Zhan Weiyang also noticed something was wrong and looked at Pei Qing a little nervously.

Pei Qing still maintained a gentle expression and said, “I also want to rest at home.”

Zhan Xueqing chased him and asked him aggressively, “Do you want to rest at home, or do you not want to go out with me?”

Zhan Weiyang really understood that something was wrong this time. He secretly moved a step in the direction of Pei Qing, not understanding why Zhan Xueqing suddenly got angry.

Pei Qing replied to Zhan Xueqing, “I really want to rest at home.”

Zhan Xueqing stood up from the chair, looked at Pei Qing and said, “Then you have a good rest, I will go out by myself tomorrow.” After that, she walked to the door.

Zhan Xiusong called out cautiously, “Qing jie?”

Zhan Xueqing ignored him, opened the door and went out, then closed the door forcefully.

The door closed with a ‘bang’ sound, and Zhan Weiyang was frightened and trembled all over, patting his chest in panic.

Zhan Weiguang looked at Pei Qing and blankly pointed in the direction of the door.

       Pei Qing shook his head.

Zhan Weiguang said, “Why is Zhan Xueqing’s temper getting weirder and weirder now?”

Pei Qing still didn’t speak. He said, “You should call her when you go out tomorrow.”

Zhan Xiusong said reluctantly, “Go shopping with her?”

Pei Qing didn’t answer, just waved to Zhan Weiyang, “Let’s go down.”

       Zhan Weiyang hurriedly followed him.

The author has something to say:
Zhan Weiguang is actually a very smart person, but he is completely clueless when it comes to relationships…
