Chapter 58 – I slept with my brother?!

Chapter 58 – I slept with my brother?!

He Changzhou proved through his actions that he wasn’t done yet. He chattered incessantly by Zhao Qi’s ear. Zhao Qi was not annoyed, and in fact, it was thanks to this constant chatter that he was somewhat relieved from his discomfort, which he wasn’t sure was due to seasickness, morning sickness, or something brought on by Rong Tang.

“Why are you so fixated on the name ‘Zhao Yun’? Do you greatly admire Changshan Zhao Zilong?”

He Changzhou’s eyes revealed a trace of fervor as he said, “Yes, my goal since childhood has been to become a hero like him.”

Zhao Qi responded grumpily, “It’s better if you don’t become him.”

“Why not?”

“If you were Zhao Zilong, then I’d be your lord, and that would make me Liu Xuande. That means my son…” Zhao Qi cast him a sidelong glance, “What, do you want to replicate the seven assaults and seven rescues at Changban Slope to save the young lord?”

He Changzhou honestly said, “I do, but I’m afraid I might not get that chance. Besides, the emperor’s son isn’t just any young lord; he’s my son as well.”

Zhao Qi covered his lips with his hand and said expressionlessly, “No, he isn’t.”

Even with his mouth covered, He Changzhou insisted, “He could be.”

Zhao Qi was at a loss. It was the first time he had met someone so eager to become a father. He Changzhou was still too young and lacked the hard knocks from society.

“Don’t talk about this child. Even if I were to have one, you’d only be a godfather at most.”

He Changzhou said, “Being a godfather isn’t bad either.”

Zhao Qi spoke earnestly, “Changzhou, as men, it’s a great disgrace to have another man raise a child. You’re my friend, and I won’t allow you to do that. Just give up on this idea.”

He Changzhou thought for a moment and said, “I think it’s okay.”

“Your opinion doesn’t matter. What matters is mine,” Zhao Qi said firmly. “I can’t accept my friend having a vast grassland on his head—even if it’s a grassland I planted!”

He Changzhou didn’t understand Zhao Qi’s meaning, “Grassland?”

Zhao Qi waved his hand and concluded, “I’ve made up my mind. There’s no need to persuade me further. If you say one more word, I’ll throw you into the river to feed the fish.”

He Changzhou smiled and replied, “Alright, I won’t talk about the child anymore.”

Zhao Qi nodded in satisfaction.

“Let’s move on to the next topic.”

Zhao Qi: “???”

“I know how to make His Majesty pregnant,” He Changzhou said with great anticipation, eager to try, “Shall I give it a try?”

“…Someone, throw He Changzhou into the river to feed the fish!”

And so, He Changzhou was thrown into the river—

Of course, this was impossible. After summer began, there were continuous heavy rains in the Huai River area. The water level in the river was high and the current was swift. If someone were thrown in, even with full swimming skills, they’d still meet their end.

The second stop of the southern tour was Jiangxia, the area hardest hit by the disaster. As the dragon boat entered Jiangxia, it encountered a new round of heavy rain.

The sky was gray and overcast, and the daylight was as dark as night. Heavy rain poured down, even heavier than the day when Bai Yiping was beaten. The strong wind howled, and the river was raging with waves. Even a dragon boat several times larger than usual had trouble maintaining stability in such conditions.

Zhao Qi found himself both amused and helpless, as not only was he affected, but everyone on the boat was also experiencing seasickness to varying degrees and began vomiting.

Xiao Jinzi was throwing up from morning till night, unable to stop, his condition so bad that he lay in bed but had to get up frequently to vomit. He Chaozhou, who was usually physically robust, was feeling it the worst. He stayed in his room, quietly experiencing the turmoil in his stomach and had no energy to bother Zhao Qi. In comparison, Zhao Qi’s symptoms were relatively mild.

Cheng Boyan had prepared some dried tangerine peel and distributed it to everyone, which could somewhat alleviate seasickness.

Zhao Qi increasingly felt that Cheng Boyan was reliable, and he said gratefully, “My minister, I am very grateful for your help.”

Cheng Boyan replied, “It is an honor to relieve the Emperor’s worries. By the way, Your Majesty, you have been pregnant for over three months now.”

“Seems like it.”

“After three months of pregnancy, a woman’s belly will gradually become noticeable; by the fourth month, fetal movement will be felt. According to ‘Travel Diary of the Eastern Islands,’ male pregnancies differ from female ones in that morning sickness, visible pregnancy, and fetal movement will occur earlier than in women.”

Zhao Qi looked down at his belly in alarm and asked, “You mean my belly will start showing soon?”

Cheng Boyan nodded, “It is summer now, and clothing is minimal. If Your Majesty starts showing, it will be difficult to hide the dragon egg.”

Zhao Qi rubbed his forehead anxiously, “What should we do then—has there been any news from Zhao Qiao?”

Jiang Dehai said, “If Young Master Zhao does not rest and continues traveling through the night, he should arrive in Dongzhou in about three to four days. I believe that in a few days, Young Master Zhao will bring the Eastern Island’s divine doctor before Your Majesty.”

Zhao Qi patted his belly and sighed, “Let’s hope so.”

“Your Majesty, forgive me for speaking candidly,” Jiang Dehai said, “Have you not considered finding the other father of the dragon egg?”

Mentioning this made Zhao Qi very upset, “No need to find him. I have a clear idea.”

Jiang Dehai asked, “Do you suspect it is Prince Zhao Nan?”

Zhao Qi’s face soured, “Who else could it be?!”

Gong Gong, who had witnessed Prime Minister Xiao kiss the Emperor publicly, cautiously hinted, “Well, who can say for sure.”

Zhao Qi analyzed the situation and frowned, “Prime Minister Xiao should… shouldn’t be the one, right?” Xiao Shiqing didn’t seem like someone who would take such actions against him.

Jiang Dehai boldly advised, “Your Majesty, I think you should find out who the father of the dragon egg is before making a decision. If… I mean if the dragon egg really belongs to the Prime Minister, would you… keep the baby or not?”

Zhao Qi had always thought the dragon egg was He Chaozhou’s until recently when he realized he might be mistaken. He hadn’t considered this problem before. If Xiao Shiqing was indeed the other father of the dragon egg, the person who had separated his legs that night, then… his worldview would be completely overturned! How could he face Xiao Shiqing in the future, or govern the world together with him!

Zhao Qi’s expression was unpredictable, “I refuse to answer that question. I’m going to sleep!”

The boat rocked too violently for Xiao Shiqing to be in the mood to review memorials. He stood by the window, looking at the storm outside, and asked the person behind him, “How long until we reach Jiangxia?”

Fu Zi said, “If the rain does not lessen, it may take another night.”

“Is there any news from Zhang Taiyi?”

“Prime Minister, I have sent someone to Qi Lin, Zhang Taiyi’s hometown, through the night. They should be able to bring him before you soon.”

Xiao Shiqing casually replied, “So, I still have to wait for several more days?”

Fu Zi hesitated before continuing, “There is also Cheng Boyan’s prescription. I consulted several local famous doctors, and they all said they had never seen such a prescription. Some doctors said it resembles the medicine used to stabilize pregnancy in women, but there are ingredients that should not be used for pregnant women, so… I apologize for the mishap and ask the Prime Minister to punish me.”

Stabilizing pregnancy medicine, pregnant women, ten months, loss of appetite, fatigue, drowsiness…

A wild thought flashed through Xiao Shiqing’s mind. It was so absurd that he laughed at himself.

Fu Zi was confused by Xiao Shiqing’s ambiguous smile, “Prime Minister?”

“Fu Zi.”

“Here.”

“Do you think there are men who also…” Xiao Shiqing paused, “Forget it, you can go now.”

As night fell, the rain not only showed no sign of easing but grew even heavier. The wind and thunder combined, making it sound as if someone was undergoing a tribulation.

Under such conditions, it was impossible to sleep properly. Zhao Qi had taught Jiang Dehai and Cheng Boyan to play “Landlord.” When Xiao Shiqing arrived, Zhao Qi was grandly throwing down a few cards, “Crushed—”

“Big one!”

“Can’t afford it.”

Xiao Shiqing asked, “It’s so late, why are you still awake?”

Jiang Dehai and Cheng Boyan quickly stood up and saluted, “Greetings, Prime Minister.”

“Prime Minister is here,” Zhao Qi smiled, “I asked them to keep me company.”

Xiao Shiqing waved for them to leave, “The Emperor should go to bed.”

“How can I sleep with the boat rocking so much? Even if I get into bed, I’ll just be thrown out.”

Xiao Shiqing glanced at Zhao Qi’s bed and smiled, “Is Your Majesty suggesting that I sleep with you?”

“…Huh?” I didn’t mean that, I’m not, don’t say that.

“Understood,” Xiao Shiqing said, “Come on.”

Zhao Qi’s face turned stiff, “Are you serious, brother?”

Xiao Shiqing explained, “The dragon boat is too unstable. If I hold you while you sleep, you might sleep more soundly.”

So that’s the case. “Let someone else do it,” Zhao Qi said, “I feel bad troubling the Prime Minister.”

Xiao Shiqing raised an eyebrow, “Who do you want to do it instead?”

Zhao Qi was momentarily at a loss for words, unable to answer.

So, inexplicably, they ended up in a situation where they would be sleeping together.

Zhao Qi took off his outer clothing and secretly looked at his belly in the mirror. Whether it was his imagination or not, he felt it had gotten a bit bigger and even had a slight curve.

Xiao Shiqing observed him calmly and said, “You sleep on the inside.”

“Oh…” Zhao Qi climbed into bed first, neatly covering himself with the blanket and waiting for Xiao Shiqing to join him, like a dutiful wife waiting for her husband to come to bed.

Then Xiao Shiqing got into bed, wrapped his arms around Zhao Qi, pulling him close so that his chest was against Zhao Qi’s back, and asked in a low voice, “Is it still rocking?”

“…Not rocking anymore, Brother.” Although it was a bit awkward.

Being held by a man was one thing, but being held by a man in bed was almost contrary to his straight (male) principles.

…Though with his belly getting bigger, straight principles were the least of his concerns!

Zhao Qi reassured himself internally that there was a reason for this. Xiao Shiqing was holding him for protection, so it didn’t count.

Xiao Shiqing chuckled softly, his lips brushing against Zhao Qi’s ear, “Then sleep.”

Zhao Qi lay in Xiao Shiqing’s arms for a while, feeling uncomfortable all over. He said softly, “Brother.”

Xiao Shiqing responded with his eyes closed, “Hmm?”

“I want to turn over.”

“Go ahead.”

Zhao Qi complained softly, “But Brother is pressing down on my hair.”

Xiao Shiqing paused, lifted his head slightly, and freed Zhao Qi’s hair. Zhao Qi turned over and faced Xiao Shiqing.

Xiao Shiqing’s features were sharp and elegant, with a straight nose and a luxurious handsomeness that made Zhao Qi lose track of time simply by staring.

Xiao Shiqing slowly opened his eyes, “What else is there?”

Caught being caught sneaking a look, Zhao Qi felt a bit embarrassed, but just a bit. “I think Brother looks even better lately.”

Xiao Shiqing asked, “Was I not good-looking before?”

“Not really.” Perhaps because there were so many good-looking people around him, even Xiao Jinzi was quite handsome. Zhao Qi had always known Xiao Shiqing was good-looking, but he also thought other people were similarly attractive in their own ways. It wasn’t fair to compare them all. Since Xiao Shiqing had rescued him from the small dark room, Zhao Qi had suddenly realized how exceptional Xiao Shiqing looked, clearly on a different level from others. “You look even better now.”

Xiao Shiqing reached up and tucked Zhao Qi’s stray hair behind his ear, “And you…”

At that moment, the boat rocked suddenly, and Zhao Qi, startled, bumped into Xiao Shiqing’s arms.

Just as he was about to lift his head, Xiao Shiqing pressed it back down.

Zhao Qi tried again, “Brother…”

Xiao Shiqing pressed him back down, “Just sleep like this.”

Zhao Qi yielded and closed his eyes.

Outside, the heavy rain poured, thunder rumbled, and the wind continued to howl. Listening to Xiao Shiqing’s strong heartbeat, Zhao Qi gradually fell asleep.

Even in sleep, Zhao Qi wasn’t still. He turned and twisted, eventually ending up facing away from Xiao Shiqing.

Xiao Shiqing held him from behind, his hands resting on Zhao Qi’s small belly, and frowned slightly.

He remembered that the little emperor’s abdomen was flat and had no excess flesh. How come now…

Was it from gaining weight, or…

Suddenly, he felt a movement under his palm.

Xiao Shiqing’s eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at his hand.

The little emperor remained asleep, his eyelashes gently lowered, looking as innocent as ever, completely unaware.

Chapter 86

After Chen Youyou left, Zhan Weiyang asked Pei Qing, “Where are we going to have dinner?”

Pei Qing raised his hand to wrap it around his shoulder, and the two left from the school gate.

“What do you want to eat?” Pei Qing asked.

Zhan Weiyang replied, “Anything is fine!” As long as he was with Pei Qing, Zhan Weiyang felt happy to eat anything; even if he were asked to go for a seafood noodle meal, he would think it was delicious!

Pei Qing said, “How about we buy some to take home and eat?”

“Take home and eat?” Zhan Weiyang thought that since Pei Qing said taking it home, it meant home with Grandma and Auntie Luo. However, he wanted to have a meal with Pei Qing, just the two of them.

Pei Qing said, “Go back to my place.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him strangely. Pei Qing came here in the morning and rented a flat first. He didn’t have the confidence to say that he would definitely pass the interview, but he also sent his resume to other local companies. Whether he passed the interview this time or not, he planned to stay.

He wanted to live here. He couldn’t continue to live in the Zhan family, so he had to rent a house first.

Pei Jingrong was very angry about his choice and threatened to cut off his source of livelihood.

Pei Qing thought it was fine. He should have been independent and should not continue to spend the family’s money. It was just that he had no income for a while, and the rent was the living expenses he had saved before. He told Pei Jingrong that he would try to find a way to return the money to Pei Jingrong after his job was stable. Pei Jingrong was furious again but was persuaded by Zhan Yingfei.

Later, Zhan Yingfei privately told Pei Qing she would transfer some money. Pei Qing thanked her and refused. He came here today to pay the deposit and three months’ rent, and now he really didn’t have much money.

He rented a one-bedroom flat with only one bedroom, an open kitchen and a small dining table, which was only almost enough for two people to sit face to face.

Pei Qing put the bought dishes on the dining table and sat down to eat with Zhan Weiyang.

Zhan Weiyang ate a little carelessly and kept staring at Pei Qing.

Pei Qing said, “Why are you looking at me if you don’t eat well?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I’ve been thinking about you for a long time. I have to take a good look at you today.”

Pei Qing picked up a piece of beef for him, “Then you can take your time to look at me. Anyway, I won’t leave in the future.”

“Huh?” Zhan Weiyang suddenly realised something, “You won’t leave in the future?”

       Pei Qing nodded.

Zhan Weiyang said, “If I get into C University, won’t we be separated again?”

Pei Qing put down her chopsticks, as if thinking seriously, and said to him, “Yes.”

Zhan Weiyang showed a panicked expression.

This semester, he studied very hard with the goal of getting into C University. Although his grades did not improve enough to allow him to enter C University after a semester, he made a lot of progress compared to before.

Even the homeroom teacher invited Zhan Pengcheng to the school to talk, saying that Zhan Weiyang had made great progress. If he had worked harder in the last year, he might have been able to get into university.

When Zhan Weiyang heard that Pei Qing was not going back, he panicked for a while, then reacted and said, “Then I won’t apply to C University.”

Pei Qing asked him, “What school does Yangyang want to apply to?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I need to think about it.”

Pei Qing nodded, “It’s okay, think about it slowly.”

After dinner, Zhan Weiyang toured the small apartment Pei Qing had rented. As he walked around the place, he noticed that the new bedding Pei Qing had bought was still lying on the bed in the bedroom, not yet put in place.

Zhan Weiyang took the initiative to help Pei Qing make the bed.

The clean and soft plain new sheets were spread out neatly on the mattress. Zhan Weiyang couldn’t help but lie on his back and look at the bedroom.

The furniture in the room looked very simple. In addition to the bed, there were only bedside tables and wardrobes. The ceiling above was pure white, and a simple round small lamp in the middle was on, and the light was dazzling yellow.

Zhan Weiyang didn’t know why he liked this place very much. He lay on the bed and was reluctant to get up.

Until Pei Qing stretched out a hand to him.

Pei Qing asked, “Won’t you get up?”

Zhan Weiyang shook his head, “I won’t get up.”

Pei Qing asked him, “Going to sleep here today?”

Zhan Weiyang was very happy, “Is it okay?”

Pei Qing said, “No. Your father and grandmother will be worried.”

       Zhan Weiyang was very disappointed.

Pei Qing stretched out her hand in front of him, “Come on, get up, Yangyang.”

Zhan Weiyang slowly stretched out his hand and held Pei Qing’s hand, but he didn’t really get up; instead, he pulled Pei Qing hard.

Pei Qing was originally bending over the bed, and at this time, his center of gravity was unstable. He fell forward, almost falling on Zhan Weiyang. He supported his body with his hands on both sides of Zhan Weiyang’s head with his arms.

Zhan Weiyang looked at him with a smile, raised his hands to hug his neck, and said, “I want you to kiss me.”

Pei Qing heard this, lowered her head and kissed him lightly on the lips.

Zhan Weiyang said, “It’s not like that.”

Pei Qing teased him, “Like what?”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t know what to say, so he could only say, “Kiss again, not so fast.”

Pei Qing then lowered his head and kissed Zhan Weiyang on the lips again, but this time he didn’t leave immediately.

Zhan Weiyang tried to deepen the kiss by imitating the way Pei Qing kissed him before.

Pei Qing knelt on the bed with one leg, reached out to hug Zhan Weiyang’s back, picked him up and sat on his legs, kissing him.

Zhan Weiyang thought it was very interesting, and hugged Pei Qing’s neck tightly, and was reluctant to let go for a long time.

Later, he leaned close to Pei Qing’s ear and whispered, “I will be eighteen next month.”

Pei Qing nodded and asked him, “What birthday gift do you want?”

Zhan Weiyang was a little anxious, “That’s not what I meant.”

Pei Qing smiled lightly and said, “What what do you mean?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “You said that you can have sex at the age of eighteen!”

Pei Qing said, “I said so.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him with great interest.

Pei Qing let go of his hand, let him sit down on the bed, and said to him, “Being eighteen is acceptable, but there are other necessary conditions as well. It’s not something that can just be done on a whim.”

Zhan Weiyang thought about it and was a little worried, “Will you not be interested in me?”

Pei Qing looked at him for a while, “I really don’t know how to answer your question.”

Zhan Weiyang became nervous; he stood up from the bed, raised his hand and started to take off his clothes.

Pei Qing quickly stood up and hugged him to stop him, smiling, “What are you doing?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “Don’t you want to take a look? What if you are very interested?”

Pei Qing said, “I am already very interested.” After that, Pei Qing suddenly felt a little worried, “Don’t take off your clothes in front of others in the future. Do you hear me?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I won’t take off my clothes in front of others.”

Pei Qing didn’t let Zhan Weiyang stay too late. He didn’t have a car now, and he didn’t have much money to take a taxi at will. He accompanied Zhan Weiyang to take the bus to send him home.

When waiting for the bus at the bus stop, Pei Qing suddenly felt a little emotional. He asked Zhan Weiyang, “If I am very poor in the future, will you feel wronged following me?”

Zhan Weiyang asked him, “How poor?”

Pei Qing couldn’t help but laugh and said, “I can’t afford meat, and I can’t afford a car.”

Zhan Weiyang was surprised and said, “We can’t even afford meat?”

       Pei Qing nodded seriously.

Zhan Weiyang raised his hand and touched his head nervously. After a while, he comforted Pei Qing and said, “It’s okay, I can lose weight.”

After that, he grabbed Pei Qing’s hand nervously, “I will eat very little, please don’t abandon me.”

Pei Qing smiled and said, “Okay, I will definitely not abandon you, and I will try my best to buy you meat, okay?”

Chapter 28

Qian Xiaoke thought Jiang Tongyan was a bit amusing.

“You’re not my boss, so how do you know my boss will pay?” Qian Xiaoke said. “If I were Chairman Cheng, I wouldn’t be friends with you.”

Jiang Tongyan wasn’t in the mood to bicker with Qian Xiaoke about trivial matters. Right now, he felt like he had stirred up a hornet’s nest.

“This is just unbelievable,” Jiang Tongyan said. “We’re all neighbours living here, can’t those young couples behave a bit?”

“Young couples?” Qian Xiaoke said, sitting there with a perfectly calm demeanour. “Not at all. The tenant of that room is a guy, and he brings back a different person every day.”

“…Then we really have to move!” Jiang Tongyan was about to explode. “What’s wrong with you, Qian Xiaoke? No, what’s wrong with all of you?”

       “What? Who’s all of us?”

“He’s behaving like that, and none of you neighbours are calling him out?” Jiang Tongyan felt like he was turning into a walking of thousands of whys. He looked at Qian Xiaoke, his head full of question marks. “Hasn’t anyone talked to him? No one’s doing anything?”

“We have, but it’s useless,” Qian Xiaoke said. “Everyone living here is like an unwanted stepchild. The landlord’s nowhere to be found, and the agent’s unreachable. What can we do?”

If there was a way out, who wouldn’t want to leave this place?

Besides, calling the police wasn’t an option either. Did they have any evidence that the guy was engaged in something improper? No. Plus, if they really did call the police, once the authorities saw the state of this place, that’d be it. No one would be able to stay here, and they’d probably lose their rent money, too. In the end, they’d be the ones who suffered.

Qian Xiaoke said, “We poor people have a lot of things we’re helpless about.”

The noise outside was giving Jiang Tongyan a headache. “How are you so calm?”

“I’ve gotten used to it.” Qian Xiaoke opened a drawer and pulled out a small plastic bag full of earplugs. “Want to try, Chairman Jiang? They work great.”

Irritated by the noise, Jiang Tongyan took the earplugs and, under Qian Xiaoke’s patient guidance, put them on.

The world suddenly became quiet, and even Qian Xiaoke in front of him seemed more endearing.

Sure enough, if Qian Xiaoke were mute, he’d be an adorable, likable little guy.

       What a pity…

With the earplugs on, Jiang Tongyan felt the world was a much better place. He could finally calmly inspect Qian Xiaoke’s ‘bedroom’.

This ‘bedroom’ was really nothing to write home about.

The room was quite spacious for Qian Xiaoke, but for Jiang Tongyan, it was so small he could barely stretch his legs.

The window was tiny—Jiang Tongyan guessed even sunlight had to struggle to squeeze through.

The desk by the window was the kind of old, rickety wooden school desk he’d only seen in vintage TV dramas. The paint was peeling, and it wobbled with the slightest touch.

On the desk was an air conditioner that was supposed to be white but had turned yellow. Jiang Tongyan asked, “Does that AC even work?”

“It does,” Qian Xiaoke said, “but I don’t use it. Keep your voice down—why are you yelling so late at night?”

“Huh?” Jiang Tongyan’s ‘huh’ was thunderously loud.

Frowning, Qian Xiaoke reached over and removed his earplugs. “Dude, lower your voice!”

Jiang Tongyan had forgotten he was still wearing earplugs.

“I said, does your AC even work?” Jiang Tongyan tilted his head to look at the filthy, outdated AC unit hanging there. It looked like turning it on would release toxic gas.

“It works, but I don’t use it much. I only turned it on once or twice during unbearably hot summer days,” Qian Xiaoke said. “It’s too noisy.”

“Alright, if you can avoid using it, don’t use it.” Jiang Tongyan put the earplugs back on and continued his ‘inspection’.

Qian Xiaoke’s bed wasn’t great either.

The bed wasn’t small, but it didn’t look comfortable. Jiang Tongyan couldn’t understand how Qian Xiaoke could live such a rough life.

“What’s this?” Jiang Tongyan took out the earplugs and said to Qian Xiaoke, “You don’t even have a properly sized bedsheet?”

Qian Xiaoke avoided eye contact, looking a bit embarrassed.

He did live a rough life, but it was all to save money.

The bed was a double bed that came with a mattress when he rented the place. The mattress was mediocre—so mediocre it even had a few cigarette burns in it. But that wasn’t a big deal. He could make it more comfortable by laying a mat and covering it with a bedsheet. But, of course, he didn’t.

Qian Xiaoke couldn’t bring himself to spend money on the mattress. Right now, the bed was covered with the single-sized bedding he’d used back in college.

Back then, he had two thin, single-sized mats to switch between. Even now, he used the same setup: a single mat on one half of the double bed, with the other half piled with clothes and random odds and ends.

Jiang Tongyan, frustrated, said, “So sloppy!”

Qian Xiaoke pouted, “A set of bedding is expensive.”

“Cut back on a few bowls of spicy hot pot, and you’d save enough.”

“I only eat ten yuan spicy hot pot usually, it’s cheap, don’t lecture me.”

Jiang Tongyan turned his head, saw Qian Xiaoke looking wronged, and waved his hand, deciding to drop it.

Jiang Tongyan felt he was truly a good person, too soft-hearted.

He turned around, intending to compliment the room to make Qian Xiaoke happy, but all he saw was an old, tattered sofa.

       How bad was this sofa?

It was one of those leather sofas from who-knows-what era, with the surface ruined and the springs sticking out.

Jiang Tongyan asked, “Why haven’t you thrown this thing away?”

Qian Xiaoke patiently taught this clueless boss Jiang about the ways of the world, “It’s left by the landlord if you throw it away, they’ll deduct it from your deposit when you move out! Idiot!”

“…Oh.” Jiang Tongyan learned something new, albeit useless, and didn’t even argue about being called an ‘idiot’.

“Why don’t you put your clothes in the wardrobe?” There was clearly a wardrobe in the room, albeit small, but not so small as to justify leaving clothes on the bed.

Qian Xiaoke sat on the edge of the bed, swinging his skinny legs, “Take a look yourself.”

Jiang Tongyan wasn’t in the habit of rummaging through other people’s things, but with the owner’s permission, he couldn’t refuse.

He walked over and pulled the door…

       “Damn!” The door fell off.

Jiang Tongyan jumped, “Why didn’t you tell me it was broken?”

Qian Xiaoke burst into laughter, falling back onto the bed, “If I told you, it wouldn’t have been funny, hahaha!”

Jiang Tongyan, with a dark expression, turned to look at Qian Xiaoke, feeling the urge to hire a hitman.

An eye-roll from Jiang Tongyan made Qian Xiaoke shut up.

After looking around, there wasn’t a single part of the room that satisfied Jiang Tongyan, with the noise from outside being the most irritating.

He put his earplugs back in and went to the window to enjoy the breeze.

The autumn night’s wind was quite pleasant. Although Jiang Tongyan kept complaining about Qian Xiaoke’s place, now that he was full and tired, sitting by the bed to catch a breeze felt pretty good.

Feeling comfortable, he didn’t know when he fell asleep.

Qian Xiaoke was originally sitting cross-legged, playing a mobile game. He was about to complete his puzzle game.

After being tired from playing, he turned around to find Jiang Tongyan asleep, looking quite comfortable.

Holding his phone, Qian Xiaoke quietly called out, “Jiang Tongyan!”

The sleeping figure didn’t move, like a dead pig.

Qian Xiaoke stared at him for a while, then clicked his tongue.

Jiang Tongyan was really handsome, good-looking, good physique, and rich, but his personality and sexual prowess were lacking.

Lying beside him, Qian Xiaoke felt pity for him for the umpteenth time.

An apple bitten by God, what a pity.

Qian Xiaoke felt a sense of compassion for Jiang Tongyan, sighed, and mumbled, “Life is hard, treasure what you can.”

The next morning, Jiang Tongyan woke up feeling disoriented. He first looked at the ceiling and then at the person beside him, snoring away.

       Everything seemed off.

“Shit!” Although Jiang Tongyan was never one for good temper around Qian Xiaoke. His upbringing prevented him from swearing, but he couldn’t help it this morning.

Qian Xiaoke was startled awake, jumping up from the bed.

“Huh? What?” Qian Xiaoke was still groggy, his world not yet awake.

Jiang Tongyan looked at him, “What’s going on?”

Qian Xiaoke, still sleepy, continued to doze off sitting on the bed.

Jiang Tongyan grabbed his shoulders, shaking him melodramatically, “Wake up!”

       It was no use.

Unless it was time for work, nothing could wake Qian Xiaoke up.

“Qian Xiaoke!” Seeing no response, Jiang Tongyan got an idea, “There’s a thief in your house!”

       Qian Xiaoke shuddered, “Where?”

He reached under his pillow and pulled out a kitchen knife, which scared Jiang Tongyan stiff.

“…Qian Xiaoke, let’s talk this out, what are you doing with that?”

Qian Xiaoke, holding his knife, looked around, not seeing any thief, only Jiang Tongyan cowering in the corner.

“Where’s the thief?” Qian Xiaoke asked.

Jiang Tongyan took a deep breath and took the knife from him.

“You sleep with that under your pillow?”

“Of course,” Qian Xiaoke said, “We pretty boys are in danger; if someone breaks in to rob or worse, I need something to defend myself.”

Jiang Tongyan wanted to mock his ‘pretty boy’ comment. ‘Pretty boy’ my foot, ‘madman’ would be more fitting.

But seeing the rickety door that looked like it would fall apart with a kick, having a knife for self-defence seemed reasonable.

“There’s no thief,” Jiang Tongyan said, “Why am I here?”

“…Did you lose your memory?” Qian Xiaoke said, “You fell asleep here last night.”

Jiang Tongyan hadn’t lost his memory, “I’m asking why you didn’t let me sleep on the bedding!”

Why was Qian Xiaoke on the bedding while he was lying on a pile of clothes?

Who knew if they were even clean?

Qian Xiaoke pretended not to understand, got off the bed, and stretched.

       “Chairman Jiang, pay up.”

       “Huh?”

“You stayed here last night, I need to charge you,” Qian Xiaoke said, “My place isn’t comparable to your five-star hotel, so I’ll give you a discount. How much is a night at your place?”

       “3688.”

Qian Xiaoke raised his hand, digging in his ear, “How much?”

“3688,” Jiang Tongyan said, “What’s wrong?”

Qian Xiaoke took a deep breath, reminding himself he wasn’t anti-rich.

“Okay, since we’re good friends, you stayed here last night, so 368 yuan will do.”

“I’ll give you nothing!” Jiang Tongyan stood up abruptly, only to bump his waist on the table corner.

Chapter 57 – Have I ever slept with my brother?

Chapter 57 – Have I ever slept with my brother?

Hearing what He Changzhou said, Zhao Qi felt suffocated.

Indeed, there were only four people who had been to the Yonghua Palace that night: excluding Rong Tang and He Changzhou, the remaining candidates were Li Chisu and Xiao Shiqing.

Li Chisu was notoriously flirtatious and enjoyed making advances. For him, sleeping with someone was as common as eating a meal. Coupled with his ambiguous attitude toward Zhao Qi, it was quite possible that the dragon egg really belonged to him.

As for Xiao Shiqing… Zhao Qi had spent almost all his time with Xiao Shiqing and did not notice anything unusual about him. Furthermore, Xiao Shiqing had no interest in either men or women and was proud of his aloofness. Zhao Qi was confident that Xiao Shiqing would not be interested in him.

In summary, Li Chisu’s probability was much higher than Xiao Shiqing’s.

“The dragon egg is yours; I don’t want it, let alone Li Chisu!” Zhao Qi swore to the heavens, “I, Zhao Qi, would rather be childless than have him father a child!”

“Shh,” He Changzhou placed his finger on Zhao Qi’s lips, “Your Majesty, keep your voice down. Fu Zi is still lurking in the dark; be careful not to let him overhear.”

Zhao Qi puffed out his cheeks, losing interest in strolling and eating noodles. “Let’s go back.”

Meanwhile, after Xiao Shiqing had taken care of his tasks, he went to the outskirts of Cangzhou.

Outside the Rong residence’s annex, two guards saw Xiao Shiqing and knelt in greeting, “Greetings, Prime Minister.”

Xiao Shiqing looked at the newly planted peach blossoms in the courtyard and asked, “What has Rong Tang been doing these past few days?”

The guards replied, “Young Master Rong spends his time either sleeping or tending to the peach trees in the courtyard. When tired, he rests and reads books.”

Xiao Shiqing narrowed his eyes and walked into the courtyard.

Rong Tang was watering and fertilizing the peach trees. Despite the dirty work, he remained pristine and clean.

Hearing the footsteps, he looked up and saw the visitor’s eyes glimmer with a hint of disappointment. He said calmly, “Prime Minister, what brings you here?”

Xiao Shiqing touched the tender green leaves on a branch and said nonchalantly, “We will set out tomorrow.”

Rong Tang’s eyes hardened, and he cleared his throat softly a few times.

Tomorrow, that person would be leaving.

In fact, whether he left or stayed made little difference to Rong Tang. Even if they were in the same city, they would likely never meet again in this lifetime.

He knew this well, but as long as he could think of being in the same city, looking at the same sky, and drinking the same water as that person, his heart still had a semblance of life.

Once he left, Rong Tang would probably be completely resigned. Life would become much more bearable then.

Xiao Shiqing removed the new leaf, saying, “Before he left, he asked me to set you free.”

Rong Tang gave a light laugh. “Is that so? As expected of him.” He was always hitting with one hand and then giving a piece of candy with the other. He relied on that piece of candy to hold on until now.

“I said I need to think about it.”

“May I ask, what has the Prime Minister decided?”

Xiao Shiqing let go of his hand, and the new leaf slid from his grip, falling into the mud. “As long as you stay far away from him, it’s not impossible.”

Rong Tang asked, “How far?”

“From east to west, from south to north.”

“Understood,” Rong Tang nodded, “The Prime Minister wants me to go to the northern borders.”

“To him, you are only of that much use now,” Xiao Shiqing said lazily. “I’ve prepared a pass with the Emperor’s seal. As long as you agree, someone will take the pass to the Huai Wang’s residence in the capital in your name. Considering your past relationship with Huai Wang, gaining their trust won’t be difficult.”

Rong Tang’s expression turned serious. “Is this your decision or his?”

“Mine.”

“And he doesn’t know?”

Xiao Shiqing answered calmly, “When the time is right, I will naturally tell him.”

“I have a question for the Prime Minister.”

“Speak.”

“Did the Prime Minister spare my life because the Emperor interceded, or because you intended to use me from the beginning?”

Xiao Shiqing glanced at him. “Neither.”

“Then what is the reason?”

“The reason I spared your life is because…” Xiao Shiqing chuckled softly, “I didn’t want him to be angry with me.”

Rong Tang’s fingers clenched in his sleeve, and his chest felt tight. It seemed that only someone like Xiao Shiqing could use the life of a person, or even an entire clan, to exchange for a smile from the Emperor.

“You can take your time to consider,” Xiao Shiqing said. “Once you have made a decision, whatever it may be, tell the guards outside the courtyard. They will inform you of the next steps.”

After saying this, Xiao Shiqing left. Rong Tang called out, “Prime Minister.”

Xiao Shiqing stopped. “What is it?”

“Since the Emperor’s health is not well, why did he still insist on traveling south by boat?”

“He insisted on doing so, so I naturally followed his wishes.”

Rong Tang said, “If I were you, I would not let him suffer during this October, no matter what.”

Xiao Shiqing turned around. “October?”

Rong Tang noticed the concern in Xiao Shiqing’s eyes, and his heart stirred. He slowly smiled, “So, the Prime Minister still doesn’t know about this matter.”

Xiao Shiqing’s expression grew stern. “If you have something to say, say it directly. No need for circumlocution.”

Rong Tang replied, “He has his reasons for not speaking, and others are not qualified to speak for him. Farewell, Prime Minister. I won’t see you off.”

Xiao Shiqing did not linger. Though he had doubts, he would not be easily manipulated.

However, he was increasingly certain that the young Emperor was hiding something from him, and Rong Tang might be aware of it.

Feeling restless, Xiao Shiqing went straight to the young Emperor’s quarters upon returning to the palace. His first question was, “Has the Emperor returned?”

Jiang Dehai replied, “The Emperor has just returned. Little Jinzi is helping the Emperor change clothes.”

Xiao Shiqing entered the inner room. Zhao Qi’s clothes were mostly changed, with only a jade belt remaining. Xiao Shiqing said softly, “Step aside, I’ll do it.”

Little Jinzi placed the jade belt aside and bowed out. The young Emperor was lost in thought as he gazed at the bronze mirror, unaware of the change in attendants beside him.

Xiao Shiqing approached him from behind, his large palm gently lifting Zhao Qi’s chin. Leaning close to his ear, he asked, “What is the Emperor thinking about?”

Zhao Qi jumped in surprise, his gaze forced to the bronze mirror in front of him.

In the mirror, he stood in front with Xiao Shiqing behind him; Xiao Shiqing’s hand supported his chin, his lips only inches from Zhao Qi’s ear.

Zhao Qi came to his senses and asked, “Brother, are you actually much taller than me?!”

Xiao Shiqing laughed and let go, ruffling Zhao Qi’s hair. “Was it fun outside?”

Zhao Qi turned around and said, “It wasn’t fun, not as much as half of the capital.”

Xiao Shiqing lowered his gaze. “Do you have something on your mind?”

Zhao Qi looked back at him, hesitating. “Yes… no.”

Xiao Shiqing raised his brows slightly. “Is it yes or no?”

Zhao Qi scratched his head with one hand. “I want to ask Brother something.”

“Go ahead.”

“Has Brother ever, um…” Zhao Qi’s face turned bright red, his voice dropping to a whisper, “ever slept with… me?”

Xiao Shiqing didn’t catch the second half of Zhao Qi’s question and frowned, “What?”

Summoning his courage, Zhao Qi was about to repeat the question loudly when Jiang Dehai’s voice came from outside, “Your Majesty, Prime Minister, it’s time for the meal.”

“Not urgent,” Xiao Shiqing said. “The Emperor should finish what he was saying first.”

Finding a father for the dragon egg was as difficult as waging a war—first with enthusiasm, then diminishing, and eventually exhausting. Zhao Qi was already exhausted and almost fled, saying, “I’m hungry, let’s have the meal first!”

Xiao Shiqing: “…”

Despite claiming to be hungry, Zhao Qi had no appetite during the meal. He barely moved his chopsticks before feeling tired and asked to return to his room to rest.

Xiao Shiqing let him go. Once Zhao Qi had left, he summoned Fu Zi.

“Have you found any leads on the matter I asked you to investigate?”

Fu Zi responded, “Prime Minister, Cheng Boyan is a latecomer to the Imperial Medical Institute, apprenticing under the former head of the Institute, Zhang Taiyi. Before the Emperor’s tour, he once consulted Zhang Taiyi for loss of appetite and nausea. Zhang Taiyi diagnosed the Emperor with damp-heat in the stomach, Qi deficiency, and blood deficiency, and prescribed a medicine. However, the very next day, Zhang Taiyi went into mourning, and Cheng Taiyi took over the Emperor’s diagnosis.”

Xiao Shiqing gestured for Fu Zi to continue.

“Since then, Cheng Taiyi became the Emperor’s sole designated physician, accompanying the Emperor during his southern tour. All the medicines the Emperor took daily were prepared by him.”

Xiao Shiqing asked, “Do you have the prescriptions from Zhang Taiyi and Cheng Boyan?”

Fu Zi said, “The formula from Dr. Zhang can be found in the archives of the Imperial Medical Institute. As for Dr. Cheng, he handles everything personally—drying, grinding, and decocting the medicine. The formula is all in his mind and is not written down. I only deduced the formula from the residue of his decoctions.” He took out two notes and handed them to Xiao Shiqing. “Prime Minister, please have a look.”

Xiao Shiqing glanced at them and said, “Interesting.”

For the same illness, the prescriptions from these two doctors, one old and one young, were completely different.

“I asked the doctors, and indeed, Dr. Zhang’s formula is a good remedy for damp-heat in the stomach and intestines, as well as for qi and blood deficiency. However, Dr. Cheng’s formula was unknown to them; they had never heard of it and were unsure of its use.”

Xiao Shiqing pondered for a moment and said, “Send someone to Dr. Zhang’s hometown to find out more. Continue investigating Dr. Cheng’s prescription.”

Fu Zi clasped his hands and said, “Understood. If the Prime Minister has no other instructions, I will take my leave.”

“Hold on,” said Xiao Shiqing.

“Yes, Prime Minister?”

Xiao Shiqing hesitated for a moment and asked, “What did the Emperor do today?”

“Reporting to the Prime Minister, His Majesty…”

“Forget it, don’t mention it.”

Fu Zi was puzzled. “?”

Xiao Shiqing said, “I promised him not to monitor him anymore.”

“Well then, may I take my leave?”

“Wait.” Xiao Shiqing said, “You should still tell me.”

Having served Xiao Shiqing for many years, Fu Zi had never seen the usually decisive Prime Minister so conflicted. He said with a complicated expression, “Today, the Emperor went out with General He. They ate a bowl of Yangchun noodles at an open-air stall. There seemed to be some unpleasantness, and the Emperor even had a dispute with General He. After that, His Majesty’s mood has been quite poor.”

Unpleasantness with He Changzhou… Is this what’s troubling the young Emperor?

“I see,” Xiao Shiqing said淡淡ly, “Remember, I didn’t ask you anything just now.”

Fu Zi responded, “Understood.”

The next morning, the dragon boat set sail again.

Xiao Shiqing lifted the restrictions on the common people, and many people gathered on the shore, eager to catch a glimpse of the Emperor.

Zhao Qi thought for a long time and decided to adopt a majestic demeanor to assert the Emperor’s authority. With a stern face, he led the civil and military officials onto the boat, leaving the shore and standing on the deck, looking at the dense crowd on the shore.

The river breeze brushed his face, filling him with boundless pride—Ah, these are all my subjects.

Among the hundreds and thousands of people, he spotted that familiar white figure at a glance.

Yong Tang’s gaze pierced through the crowd and quietly landed on him.

Cold and ethereal, just like before.

As the dragon boat moved forward slowly, the white figure in his sight gradually grew smaller until it finally disappeared.

“Your Majesty.”

A hand patted his shoulder, and Zhao Qi withdrew his gaze to meet He Changzhou’s smiling eyes. “What’s the matter?”

He Changzhou asked, “Has Your Majesty decided?”

“Decided what?”

He Changzhou lightly patted Zhao Qi’s lower abdomen. “The name of the child.”

Zhao Qi’s eye twitched. “I don’t need to decide. Thank you.”

“Then listen to me and name him Zhao Yun.”

“… Are you done?!”

Chapter 34

In this battle, the second eldest son of the Sheng family, Sheng Guang, and their third eldest son, Sheng Wei, were shot dead, and more than 200 of their men died. The fifth son, Sheng Ming, disappeared without a trace.

On the side of J City, military and political leader Old Master Shen suddenly fell ill, and all affairs were handed over to his grandson, Shen Mo, to handle. Sheng Weiyong was arrested for economic crimes involved in smuggling, illegal possession of firearms, and other charges. The eldest son, Sheng Kai, was detained for a murder case. The stock price of Sheng Group plummeted. The Sheng family’s power was on the decline, as if a building was about to collapse, teetering on the edge.

The authorities classified this incident as a gang conflict, skillfully avoiding implicating the Chu family, instead announcing that the Chu family was an ‘innocent victim’ who had accidentally become involved in the gang clash.

In this battle, the Black Eagle Society lost 43 men dead and over 240 injured. The casualties among Chu Qin’s former subordinates who were paying respect at the cemetery were the heaviest. At Qinglan Mansion, besides Aunt Song, the gardener, and a few servants who weren’t there that day, Bai Yang and three bodyguards were severely injured, while Feng Tai, Lan Xin, and others all died.

Chu Yunhan, who stubbornly insisted on personally visiting the scene, did not speak a word the entire time. He only picked up Feng Tai’s pocket watch and tucked it into his chest pocket, slowly combing Lan Xin’s bloodstained hair, staring at her pale, quiet face for a long time without moving. Finally, he closed his eyes, which were reddened from holding back tears, and had them placed in black body bags and taken to the morgue.

After returning from the cemetery, he locked himself in his room in the old mansion and hadn’t come out since. The Sheng family still had a lot of fish that might have slipped through the net and could be wandering the city, so Chu Yichen requested that he stay in the old mansion temporarily. But everyone knew the real reason—it was to prevent him from being reminded of the scene at the empty Qinglan Mansion.

The next afternoon, the door was forced open, and Hei Yu brought a little girl to Chu Yunhan who looked haggard.

There was finally a flicker of light in his dull eyes. He knelt halfway and said slowly in a hoarse voice, “Yuanyuan, your mother…is gone.”

“…Where did Mommy go?” There was an uneasiness in the childish voice.

“…She went to a very, very beautiful place. She wanted to stay there, but she couldn’t stop worrying about you, afraid you’d be lonely…” He did his best to remain composed in front of the child, trying to appear better, “From now on, Uncle will accompany you on her behalf so that she can rest assured, okay?”

Yuanyuan looked at him and nodded, but tears fell. She was a sensitive and delicate child—her mother hadn’t come back, and neither had Uncle Feng. Many people hadn’t come back. She could read pity and sorrow in the adults’ eyes when they looked at her. She knew her mother wouldn’t return, and from now on, she had no one else to rely on except the man before her.

Chu Yunhan held her in his arms and comforted her softly, “Don’t cry, don’t cry… Uncle will always be with you and protect you. Are you hungry? Let’s go get something to eat together, okay?”

He had to pull himself together because someone needed him. He was someone else’s pillar of support.

This incident was too far-reaching, requiring a great deal of follow-up work. Both the black and white parties have a lot of things to be busy with, including political negotiations, business operations, internal management, tracing the remnants of the party, providing compensation for the deceased, and treating the injured… Additionally, with many people lost, Chu Yichen was swamped with work. Minran couldn’t be in J City to assist, and even the older generation, Chu Yu and Chu Xuan had to get involved. Chu Yunhan actively took over many of the group’s operational matters and became busy himself.

The funeral of the deceased was held a week later, and tombstones were erected in the Black Eagle Society’s exclusive cemetery. Although some of the ashes had been collected by their families, their names were still engraved here as a permanent memorial.

It was an extremely grand funeral. A black motorcade, with large white flowers tied to the front of the cars, slowly made its way along the main road of K City, passing in front of the Golden Eagle Group headquarters. Under the gaze of the golden eagle perched atop the building, the deceased were sent to their final resting place. The long procession attracted numerous onlookers, all of whom knew it was the Chu family bidding farewell to their loved ones.

The officials and high-ranking members of the Black Eagle Society rushed back from all directions, and the entire cemetery was dark and solemn. Chu Yichen, wearing a black suit, stood at the front. Chu Yunhan and others stood behind him, bowing deeply to the tombstone together. Yuanyuan, who was wearing a little black skirt, held his hand tightly and sobbed softly. After the ceremony was over, he took her little hand and went to Lan Xin’s tombstone. Yuanyuan cried and said softly, “Mom, don’t worry, I will listen to Uncle Chu, and I will come to see you often…”

Seeing this scene, Chu Yunhan felt extremely depressed. He turned his face and met the eyes of the man standing not far away.

Chu Yichen was looking at him. The two of them were busy with their own affairs during this period. Even though they lived in the old house, they always left early and returned late. It seemed that they had not seen each other for a long time. At this moment, there were many people between them, and they were looking at each other calmly, and no one looked away. It wasn’t until Yuanyuan grabbed Chu Yunhan’s hand again that he lowered his head, picked her up, and left the cemetery first.

When people get busy, they tend to ignore the passage of time. By the time all the matters were dealt with and the situation had stabilised, it had already been a month and a half. After winter set in, a few moderate to heavy rains fell, and the weather grew colder day by day.

Chu Yunhan, who was woken up by the alarm early in the morning, went downstairs with messy hair and yawned. Since Lan Xin’s death, no matter how busy he was, he made sure to set aside time every day to have breakfast with Yuanyuan and then take her to kindergarten. He sleepily walked to the dining room, and when he saw the people sitting at the round table eating, he paused in surprise, his eyes widening.

Yuanyuan, wearing a little red sweater, reached for the pastries on the plate, but her short arms couldn’t quite reach. She quietly pulled her hand back. Just then, a large hand extended from the side, moving the plate directly in front of her. The girl softly said thank you, took a small cake, and bit into it, with the jam filling spilling out. The man sitting next to her wiped it off with a napkin and said, “Take your time.”

This scene was strange yet harmonious, leaving Chu Yunhan dumbfounded, unsure whether to walk over. A while ago, Chu Yichen had gone to J City to expand his network, and they hadn’t seen each other for more than half a month. Now, seeing him sitting at the table felt unreal. When Yuanyuan looked up and saw him, she called out, ‘Uncle Chu’, and immediately, the familiar gaze followed.

Chu Yunhan felt a slight itch on his face, like being swept by a cat’s tail. He coughed lightly, said vaguely “Good morning, you’re back”, and sat down on the other side of Yuanyuan.

       “Just arrived.”

He was a little cautious for no reason and said, “Over there… is everything settled?”

       “En.”

       “No need to go?”

       “En.”

       “Minran is still there?”

“Shen Mo is still settling in; there are some things to take care of.”

       “Oh.”

The exchange was brief and sparse.

Chu Yunhan distractedly scooped some porridge into his spoon and brought it to his mouth, only to find it scalding. He was caught between spitting it out and swallowing, looking utterly awkward. He hissed through his teeth while sneaking a glance at the other man.

The man raised the corner of his mouth, sipping milk from his cup without saying anything. However, Yuanyuan next to him looked at him sympathetically and said, “Uncle, eat slowly, hot.”

“Okay.” His face turned red, and he stirred the porridge in the bowl with a spoon. He said, “I will take Yuanyuan back in two days.”

Chu Yichen was silent for a while and replied calmly, “Okay, I’ll let someone arrange it.”

Chu Yunhan didn’t know why he felt a little unhappy all of a sudden. It was as if there was a sudden and uncomfortable feeling in his heart. He said, “I’ll handle it myself.”

It was quite a blunt rebuttal. Du Chuan, who was standing aside, glanced at the person sitting in the main seat.

The man’s expression remained unchanged. He slowly took a sip of the milk in the cup and said, “Okay.”

It was his own suggestion at first, but now that the other person agreed, he felt upset. What was going on? Even he thought he was being unreasonable.

It was probably because he had been holding back too much lately, and he was a bit emotionally disturbed…

       That must be the case…

Chu Yunhan felt sullen and had no appetite left. After Yuanyuan finished eating, he said, “I’ll take her to kindergarten,” and left.

He was in a bad mood the entire way. It wasn’t until Yuanyuan, who was sitting in the back seat, asked timidly, “Is Uncle upset?” did he realised that he had been scowling the whole time and said with some shame, “No, it’s just that the road is a bit congested. I asked Aunt Jing to come after school in the afternoon to pick you up, okay? Uncle has a meeting that might run late.”

“Okay.” The little girl was always very well-behaved.

After dropping Yuanyuan off at kindergarten, Chu Yunhan realised that he had been absent-minded and had forgotten a whole folder of materials at home.

He had originally planned to call Du Chuan to have someone bring them to the office, but since the folder contained confidential business documents, he decided to return them and get them himself.

He walked into the traditional Chinese-style building with white walls and black tiles, his gaze passing over the study on the second floor. He paused, then turned back.

Sunlight streamed through the wooden lattice window, casting patterns of shadows on the floor. The tall bookshelf was neatly stacked with books, forming a layered, pixelated 3D image. Amid this, a figure was slouched on the wide sofa, his head tilted to one side. His hand, holding a fountain pen, was limp against the armrest, and the pen had rolled onto the carpet.

His eyes were tightly closed, and his thick black lashes cast a small shadow beneath his eyes.

Chu Yichen had just… fallen asleep.

Chu Yunhan stood quietly for a moment, letting out a soft sigh. This was the first time he had observed Chu Yichen’s sleeping face up close. He had always remembered Chu Yichen as strong and cold after reaching adulthood, like a machine, constantly alert and calm. Sometimes, he even forgot that this person was an ordinary human who needed rest.

His gaze fell on the thick stack of materials on the side table, and he frowned.

It must take a lot of effort to mediate among the powerful people in J City. This man caught a late-night flight, skipped a good night’s sleep, and was now handling a pile of matters. It’s really…

He realised that this morning, the man had probably only had a cup of milk.

He looked at the tired sleeping face of the other party, and somewhere in his heart, a soft, sour, green plum-like emotion welled up, slowly swelling, filling his heart to the fullest. He quickly went to a nearby room and took a soft thin blanket, gently draping it over Chu Yichen. After quietly closing the study door behind him, he turned to see Du Chuan holding a cup of tea and Hei Yu with the materials standing behind him. Chu Yunhan raised an eyebrow and said, “What’s so urgent that it couldn’t wait? Can’t you let him sleep for a bit?”

This was the first time the young master had interfered with Chu Yichen’s matters, and both Du Chuan and Hei Yu were taken aback, exchanging glances. Hei Yu lowered his head and said, “I’ll report in half an hour.”

He took a few steps, turned back, and whispered to Du Chuan, “Don’t mention that I came back.”

       “Understood.” The butler responded.

Chapter 67 – Side Story One

Chapter 67: Side Story One

A few days later.

In the dimly lit room, the bedding was disheveled, clothes were scattered, and the air was filled with a suggestive atmosphere.

Su Muluo was nestled against Long Ling’s chest, his long eyelashes gently closed as he slept.

Although he was asleep, one of his hands still clung to the hem of Long Ling’s clothes. There was a red mark on his pale wrist, a sign of having been bound.

Long Ling had woken up early, holding his phoenix and happily rubbing against him, gently massaging his wrist, kissing his hair, and kissing his face.

Then he woke his phoenix with kisses.

When Su Muluo woke up, his mind was still a bit hazy. He lay in Long Ling’s arms, dazed for a moment, until Long Ling leaned in and whispered with a chuckle, “Phoenix, how did you sleep?”

Su Muluo: “……”

Su Muluo immediately got angry and didn’t want to deal with this dragon, transforming back to his original form.

A beautiful little phoenix landed on Long Ling’s head, loudly chirping “cheep cheep” and angrily hopping around on his head.

Long Ling looked at his phoenix and thought its hopping was so cute that he wanted to touch it.

So he calmly petted the little phoenix’s feathers.

The little phoenix fell silent for a brief second.

“Cheep!!”

It was astonished that this dragon dared to touch it, so it pecked Long Ling sharply and flapped its wings furiously at him.

Long Ling laughed, cupping the irate little phoenix in his palm and stroking its slightly fluffed-up feathers, saying sincerely, “Sorry, phoenix, I was wrong. I promise I won’t be so excessive next time. Will you forgive me?”

Little Phoenix: “Cheep!!”

Not believing you!

You said the same thing last time!!

“Last time it was because it was the first time, and this time it’s because it’s been too long. There are reasons for both,” Long Ling said with innocent eyes. “If the phoenix lets me touch its feathers every day, I definitely won’t be so excessive.”

Hearing this, the little phoenix pecked him again in anger, refusing to be touched. It fluttered its wings and flew to the top of his head, ruffling his hair with its claws.

Long Ling had a soft, fluffy phoenix on his head. After a while, he quietly grabbed his phone from the bedside, capturing a photo of the little phoenix glaring fiercely at him while perched on his head.

The little phoenix turned its head away, not letting him take the photo, its ruby-like eyes scanning the room with clear curiosity.

It had known that its dragon had brought it to a new place, but it was only now taking the time to inspect the surroundings.

The room was spacious and bright, decorated in a warm and attractive manner. Morning light streamed through a crack in the curtains, and there was a charming balcony outside.

Long Ling picked up the little phoenix and walked over to the balcony, pulling back the curtains.

It was the second floor, and from the balcony, one could see the garden below, filled with various colorful flowers, delicate and beautiful.

“Phoenix, look,” Long Ling said, “the garden you mentioned. Do you like it?”

The little phoenix chirped in approval and then tilted its head up to look at Long Ling.

Where did you get the money?

It remembered that not long ago, Long Ling had said he would soon have money and would buy it a big house with a garden—didn’t expect it to come true so quickly.

Long Ling said, “Of course, I earned it myself.”

Seeing the little phoenix’s curious look, he took the opportunity to stroke its fluffy feathers again and said, “I first learned a lot through the internet, then used my abilities to recruit some妖 (yāo), or supernatural beings, living in human cities. They all had experience working in human companies. Although they didn’t know my true identity, they decided to follow me.”

“Later, I quickly accumulated my first batch of funds and started my own company. The妖 I had recruited were my first employees… and soon, the company grew.”

Little Phoenix: “Cheep?”

Wait, how did you accumulate the first batch of money?

Long Ling blinked and said, “Do you know what stock trading is?”

Little Phoenix: “……”

It didn’t seem to know much about it.

It hadn’t looked into it before!

Long Ling took the chance to pet the little phoenix’s head and said with a slight smile, “It’s okay, phoenix. You don’t need to know; I do. And not only in business, I’ve also built up a certain network in other areas—so even if the phoenix’s coffee shop doesn’t make money in the future, I can support you!”

His tone had a touch of pride.

Little Phoenix: “……”

Phoenixes and dragons are highly intelligent beings, learning things with just a bit of exposure. So it didn’t doubt its dragon’s abilities.

However, achieving all this in such a short time still surprised it.

So it lowered its head and gave Long Ling a kiss.

Long Ling’s expression was a bit strange. When the phoenix turned back to its original form, kissing him and pecking him were actually quite similar. So when the phoenix pecked him in anger, he would think of it as a kiss. Now, when the phoenix was happy and kissed him, he might mistakenly think it was pecking him.

But whether it was a kiss or a peck, it was a sign that the phoenix liked him.

As Long Ling was happily lost in his thoughts, little pheonix chirped a few times again.

“So, last time at the hotel, were you out late because of work too?”

Long Ling nodded, saying, “There was something that needed my attention over there, so I went to handle it.”

Thinking back, he regretted it a bit. He had thought he could quickly resolve the matter, but Phoenix woke up as soon as she noticed he wasn’t there, and she was quite panicked for a while.

Recalling Phoenix’s expression at that time, Long Ling still felt a pang of guilt. He had established his company and built his network primarily for his Phoenix. If upsetting her meant all this had no meaning.

The little pheonix wasn’t too concerned about this matter and was just casually asking. Soon, she flew up to Long Ling’s head and chirped, asking him to take her to see the new house.

The new house was large, a three-story detached villa with a beautiful garden and even a swimming pool.

Long Ling said, “In the future, Phoenix can swim here!”

The little pheonix chirped happily in response.

Feeling his Phoenix’s cuteness, Long Ling couldn’t help but smile slightly and stroked little pheonix’s feathers.

The little pheonix protested, “Chirp chirp chirp!”

“No touching! You’ll make my feathers turn pink again!”

Long Ling just responded with an “Oh” and continued to stroke.

The little pheonix huffed silently in his palm, looking fierce but allowing Long Ling to keep petting.

Long Ling took advantage happily for a while and then suddenly asked, “By the way, Phoenix, would you like to go somewhere for fun?”

Now that he had money, he could take his Phoenix on trips!

Feeling like her feathers might turn pink again, little pheonix was trying hard to crawl into Long Ling’s pocket when she heard this sentence, tilting her head.

“Chirp?”

It seemed possible!

Long Ling immediately raised his chin arrogantly and said, “Then Phoenix, give me a kiss! Kiss me and I’ll take Phoenix with me!”

The little pheonix ignored him.

She snorted and burrowed into his pocket.

Long Ling slightly pulled open his pocket and saw a fluffy little ball nestled inside, looking like a round pink cotton ball.

Unable to resist, he lightly poked it.

The little pheonix immediately pecked Long Ling on the finger and then curled up into an even smaller ball.

“Go away!”

Long Ling chuckled, holding the little ball and was about to take out his phone to see where was suitable for a trip when a call came in.

He glanced at the caller ID and immediately hung up.

“Chirp?”

Who was it?

Long Ling said, “I don’t know.”

The little pheonix didn’t believe him. She poked her head out of his pocket and glanced at the phone screen.

—It was Liu He calling.

The little pheonix immediately looked at Long Ling.

Long Ling looked innocent and said, “Every time their Bureau contacts Phoenix, it’s not for good things. I won’t bother with them.” Then he added, “Phoenix, stay here. Don’t go anywhere.”

“Chirp chirp.”

What if it’s something important?

“Doesn’t matter. The big issues are resolved now. Even if there’s something, it’s trivial.” Long Ling redirected the topic very directly and said, “What does Phoenix want to eat today? I’ll cook for Phoenix.”

The little pheonix was indeed distracted. After thinking for a while, she raised her little head and chirped loudly.

It wants a feast!

It wants lots of delicious food!

A smile crossed Long Ling’s eyes. “Okay.”

Then, holding this chirping little Phoenix, they went out together to buy groceries.

Chapter 85

Pei Qing had returned to school for a few months and waited until he officially graduated before going home for the first time. He gave away all the other things in the school dormitory that he could, and there were not many important things left, so he only packed a large suitcase.

It was already evening when he got home. Pei Jingrong and Zhan Yingfei were not at home. Zhan Xueqing’s school had not yet had a holiday, and she would not come back because of the final exams.

He dragged the suitcase into his room and saw that the things in the room were neatly packed and the desk was spotless. He stood the suitcase against the wall and lay down on the new bed sheet without a wrinkle.

Since Zhan Pengcheng was sick and hospitalised, Pei Qing had not had time to go back to see Zhan Weiyang in the past six months but just video chatted with him every night.

Compared with Zhan Weiyang’s dependence on him, Pei Qing sometimes felt that he was the one who could not live without Zhan Weiyang. He needed the feeling of being relied on, which would make his existence meaningful.

Pei Qing lay on the bed until after eight o’clock in the evening when Pei Jingrong and Zhan Yingfei came back from outside.

As soon as Zhan Yingfei got home, she noticed someone was back. She shouted, “Is Xueqing back?”

Pei Qing got up from the bed and left the room slowly, saying, “Dad, Auntie, it’s me.”

“Pei Qing!” Zhan Yingfei showed a surprised expression, “Is the school on vacation?”

Pei Jingrong looked serious, “Why didn’t you tell me you were back? How did you decide what I told you before?”

Pei Jingrong had been calling Pei Qing since two months ago to ask him about his work plans. Pei Jingrong was running his own company with Zhan Yingfei at the moment. After the start-up phase, it was now doing well. He hoped Pei Qing could go over to help him.

Pei Qing said, “I have submitted my resume to the company I want to go to, and I will go for an interview next week.”

Pei Jingrong frowned and said nothing. Zhan Yingfei noticed that Pei Jingrong was not happy, so he spoke to ease the atmosphere and asked, “Which company?”

Pei Qing said, “The one I interned at.”

Zhan Yingfei was a little surprised, “Are you planning to work at Chongfeng?”

       Pei Qing nodded.

Pei Jingrong said coldly, “Is this the decision you’ve been considering for two months?”

Pei Qing said to him, “No, this is my initial decision.”

“Pei Qing!” Pei Jingrong took two steps forward and was pulled back by Zhan Yingfei.

Zhan Yingfei said, “What are you doing? Talk to the child properly.”

Pei Jingrong said, “I’m talking to him properly.” But his tone was obviously not that nice.

Pei Qing was still very calm. He said to Pei Jingrong, “I am 22 years old, not 12. I already have my own job and will have my own life in the future. I don’t think there is anything wrong with my choice.”

Pei Jingrong said, “So you don’t need to discuss it with us? You want to live your own life. I raised you to this age. Don’t you have the obligation to explain to me?”

Pei Qing said, “I am back to explain now.”

“You call it an explanation?” Pei Jingrong couldn’t suppress his anger. “Aren’t you just simply notifying us?”

Zhan Yingfei was beside him, holding Pei Jingrong’s arm tightly, hoping that he could control his emotions.

Pei Qing said, “Because I know you will not agree, but even if you do not agree, I will still insist.”

       Pei Jingrong said angrily, “Bastard!”

Pei Qing sighed softly, leaned on the sofa, and said to Pei Jingrong, “Dad, I am not happy here.”

Pei Jingrong asked him, “Am I not good to you, or is your aunt not good to you?”

Pei Qing said, “You’re all great, and you have Xueqing. Wouldn’t it be better for you all to just be happy together? If I’m not happy, that’s my problem. There’s no need to force me to stay.”

When Pei Jingrong was about to speak, Zhan Yingfei said, “If the child wants to go out and try his luck, just let him go. Why do you have to keep him by your side? At this age, he is full of energy and should go out to gain experience.”

“But—” Pei Jingrong was still unwilling.

Zhan Yingfei interrupted him, “There’s no need to worry. It’s just a job, not something permanent. If it doesn’t go well or he’s unhappy, Pei Qing can still come back and help you out.” As she spoke, she pushed Pei Jingrong into the room, “You are all very emotional now. Let’s calm down and talk. There’s no need to rush.”

Pei Jingrong didn’t say anything else.

Zhan Yingfei said to Pei Qing when she passed by him, “Go and have a rest first. We can talk tomorrow if you have anything to say.”

Pei Qing said to Zhan Yingfei, “Auntie, I have bought a plane ticket for tomorrow.”

The next day was Friday, so Zhan Weiyang didn’t have to attend evening self-study. Although he didn’t have to attend every day, he tried studying at home for two weeks and realised he couldn’t understand the material on his own. So, he stayed at school for self-study sessions, where he could ask teachers or classmates for help with the problems he didn’t understand.

After knowing that Zhan Weiyang was going to study at night, Chen Youyou also studied at school every day. Because Zhan Weiyang’s deskmate was not there in the evening, he moved to sit next to Zhan Weiyang during self-study so that Zhan Weiyang could ask him questions that he couldn’t solve. Even though Chen Youyou wasn’t the most articulate, he could explain things to Zhan Weiyang by writing and drawing.

Zhan Weiyang said to Chen Youyou, “Youyou, you are so good.” He thought that if it weren’t for Pei Qing, he might fall in love with Chen Youyou.

Chen Youyou’s thoughts weren’t that complicated. If he went home in the evenings, his mom would just make him study anyway, so he figured he might as well stay at school. At least there, he could find some time to chat with Zhan Weiyang. So, he waved his hand and said, “I’ve, always been this, good of a person.”

After school in the afternoon, Zhan Weiyang and Chen Youyou left the school together.

Chen Youyou asked Zhan Weiyang, “How about having dinner together?”

Zhan Pengcheng would not be home for dinner today, and only Grandma and Auntie Luo were at home. Zhan Weiyang thought about it and felt that he could have dinner with Chen Youyou, but Chen Youyou had recently been obsessed with seafood noodles in a noodle shop. They had been there several times, but Chen Youyou still wanted to eat it, so Zhan Weiyang said first, “Okay, but I’m not eating seafood noodles.”

Chen Youyou was a little unhappy, “Then, what do you say to eat?”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I don’t know.” Anyway, he knew that he didn’t want to eat seafood noodles.

They walked to the school gate, and Zhan Weiyang suddenly saw a familiar figure standing under the big tree outside the gate.

It was already the end of June. Pei Qing wore a black short-sleeved T-shirt and long jeans. Compared with the last time he left, his hair was cut shorter and he was thinner. He smiled when he saw Zhan Weiyang.

Zhan Weiyang almost cried out in surprise, ran towards Pei Qing, and threw himself into Pei Qing’s arms.

At that time, Chen Youyou hadn’t reacted to what happened and stood there in a daze.

Pei Qing reached out and picked up Zhan Weiyang, both feet off the ground, gently putting him back, saying, “I’m picking you up from school.”

Zhan Weiyang was so happy that he was about to cry, and he hugged Pei Qing tightly regardless of whether there was anyone watching.

Pei Qing smiled and patted his head, “Okay, okay.”

After that, he greeted Chen Youyou, “Hello. Youyou.”

Chen Youyou came back to his senses, “Hello, Older cousin.”

Zhan Weiyang let go of Pei Qing after a while and said, “Why didn’t you tell me you were back?”

Pei Qing said, “It’s a surprise for you. I arrived in the morning and dealt with some things in the afternoon. I came directly to pick you up for dinner.”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded vigorously, “Dinner!”

Pei Qing was still thinking about Chen Youyou, “Youyou, do you want to go to dinner with us?”

Chen Youyou hesitated for a moment and said, “No, I, have to go home.”

Pei Qing didn’t force him, “Then you go back, be careful on the road.”

Chen Youyou nodded, “I’m going.” Seeing that Zhan Weiyang didn’t try to stop him, he pretended to walk towards the bus stop, changed direction halfway, and planned to eat seafood noodles alone. He still wanted to eat seafood noodles so much.

Chapter 33

His actions greatly exceeded Sheng the fifth’s expectations. The man’s brows furrowed into a deep crease, “Why are you…”

“My surname is Chu.” Chu Yunhan looked at him.

“And because you’re a Chu, the only one who can protect you now is me. My brothers will undoubtedly eradicate the Chu family; leaving me is a dead end for you.” Sheng the fifth raised his hand and looked at his watch anxiously. He then said, “Do you understand or not?”

“I’ve already betrayed once and have no desire to do it a second time.” His voice was unusually calm, without a trace of ripples. “If you still have even a shred of affection for me, let me go and allow me a dignified end. If not, kill me yourself.”

The man stared at him stiffly, with the corners of his mouth tightened. In addition to sullenness, heartbreak and sadness were in his eyes, and he whispered, “…Is it necessary to be like this?”

Chu Yunhan didn’t know where he got the courage. He pressed his finger tightly on the trigger, lowered his eyes slightly, and said word by word, “It has to be like this.”

Sheng the fifth was silent for a while, then punched the roof of the car with a gloomy face, gritted his teeth and ordered, “Let him through.”

“Fifth Young Master!” Surprised, the attendant beside him said, “If you let him go like this… If the Third Young Master finds out…”

“I said, let him through!” The man looked like a ferocious lion, his eyes a little red, “Shut the hell up!”

Seeing his rage, his subordinates dared not say more and quickly stepped aside to clear the way.

Chu Yunhan’s eyelashes trembled, and he said “Thank you” in a hoarse voice and sat back in the car. Bai Xiao immediately stepped on the accelerator and rushed out of the alley.

Sheng Ming watched the car pass before him, turn the corner and disappear. He leaned against the car door and lit a cigarette tiredly. Sheng Weiyong knew about his obsession with Chu Yunhan, which was why he hadn’t been sent on this operation. He followed secretly in order to take Chu Yunhan away safely. He had planned it all out—he would take this man back to J City, and if his family objected, they would flee abroad together for a carefree life.

But now, the man who once reached out to him for help no longer wanted to go with him.

In the end, he was too late after all.

Sheng the Fifth took a deep drag on his cigarette, recalling how Chu Yunhan had once been in his arms, and kissed. He was shy and tense, trying to resist yet forced to submit, so captivating. He thought of the stunning smile from earlier, and his gaze became unfocused.

Just as he was lost in these memories, a subordinate came rushing over with urgency, “Fifth Young Master, something happened!

Inside the car, Chu Yunhan was still gripping the gun tightly. His hands trembled slightly, and he used his other hand to steady it. Bai Xiao was on a call, listening silently before finally replying, “I understand.”

“How is he? Is there any news? How is the situation at the cemetery?” Chu Yunhan asked anxiously as soon as the call ended, leaning forward against the front seat.

Bai Xiao glanced at him through the rearview mirror. “No news yet.”

The longer it dragged on, the worse it looked. Disappointment clouded Chu Yunhan’s face as he furrowed his brows deeply. After a moment of silent thought, he asked, “How many people are heading to the cemetery now?”

       “About two thousand.”

“How many more manpower can be mobilised?”

The man paused briefly and said, “There are about two thousand and five thousand in the city.”

“Organise two thousand to intercept Sheng Wei. Split three hundred into two groups to guard the old house and the Zhou family; if necessary, evacuate them. Contact my second and third uncles, inform them of the situation, and have the people protecting Minran leave Italy and cut off all unnecessary communications. Choose a few sharpshooters to ambush at key intersections. Kill any members of the Sheng family on sight. Have all Black Eagle members currently outside conceal their identities and infiltrate J City slowly.” Chu Yunhan’s voice was dry and hoarse, with some unsteady tremors but with unprecedented cruelty. “Now turn around and go to the old house. I’m going to destroy all personnel records and financial documents. Assign two hundred men to protect it.”

Bai Xiao stared at him in shock through the rearview mirror, unable to speak for a long time.

“What are you waiting for?” Chu Yunhan snapped harshly.

Bai Xiao turned on his mobile phone, dialled a number, and said in a deep voice, “Young Master Yun said…” Then he repeated all his words. After getting the answer from the other party, he made a sharp U-turn at a red light and headed toward the Chu family’s old house.

“So much time has passed already…” There was a broken void in Chu Yunhan’s eyes, and his voice was very soft, as if he was mumbling to himself, “No news must mean he’s still alive…”

“What will happen if Young Master is no longer here?” Bai Xiao suddenly asked.

The man in the back seat said nothing.

Just when Bai Xiao thought the other party wouldn’t answer, he heard a chilling sentence.

“If he’s dead, not a single member of the Sheng family will live.”

While Chu Yunhan headed toward the Chu family’s old house, Sheng Ming’s car was speeding toward the outskirts of the city. Behind him, several black cars followed like persistent shadows. From time to time, there was the sound of bullets hitting the car’s rear.

Sheng Ming clenched the gun in his hand with red eyes, feeling waves of coldness coming from deep within his bones, making him tremble.

On the phone call just now, the weak and breathy voice of the second brother Sheng Guang kept echoing in my ears.

“Xiao Wu… I’m done for. Something happened to your third brother too… Don’t go back to J City. Just now… Shen Mo and Chu Minran attacked Dad… Turns out they’ve been planning this all along… Go abroad, don’t come back, just leave…”

Overnight, the net in his hand was torn, and the beast was released, roaring angrily, revealing its bloody fangs.

The hunter had become the prey.

The mist in his eyes turned crimson as if everything was burning and evaporating around him. Sheng Ming clenched his teeth hard and finally closed his eyes, letting a scalding tear roll down his cheek.

When Chu Yunhan rushed into the old house in a hurry, he looked at Chu Yu and Chu Xuan standing in the hall. He was stunned, tears welled up in his eyes, and he said incoherently, “Second Uncle, Third Uncle, he’s at the cemetery… What…what should we do?”

Chu Yu looked at him in such a panic and turned to Bai Xiao.

Bai Xiao lowered his head guiltily and said, “I just… didn’t tell Young Master Yun the news.”

“Deceiving your master, how insolent.” Chu Yu said coldly, “Your punishment will be dealt with later. Go tend to your wounds.”

       “Yes.” He immediately retreated.

Chu Xuan walked over and said, “Yichen is fine, and the situation is under control. We are here, don’t worry.”

Hearing these words, Chu Yunhan felt that the strength that had been held in his body had been drained out of his body. His whole body relaxed, and his feet lost some strength and swayed.

Chu Xuan held him up and asked, “Are you okay?”

He looked at the other person suddenly, tears rolling down uncontrollably. He hurriedly wiped it off with the back of his hand, lowered his head and said, “I’m okay.”

“Sit down.” Chu Yu patted his shoulder, “Drink some water.”

Chu Yunhan sat down and took the tea from the servant. Without drinking it, he said in a hoarse voice, “What happened today was done by the Sheng family.”

“Yes,” Chu Yu said. “The Sheng family and our family have both been vying for political and military support. Initially, we stayed out of each other’s way, but a year ago, they began extending their influence into K City, squeezing our power. Yichen started strategising at that time, using the forces in J City to shake the foundation of the Sheng family. Although Minran claimed to be studying abroad in Italy, he has actually been staying with the Shen family in J City for the past year, hiding his identity and plotting to help Shen Mo rise to power. Just now, that plan has come to fruition.” He paused momentarily before continuing, “What happened today was indeed sudden. The Sheng family noticed Shen Mo’s growing power and decided to strike first and take Yichen’s life. However, this time, their covert operation was controlled directly by the second and third sons of the Sheng family. It wasn’t until last night that Minran figured out their movements. We had received word that they planned to make a move during the amusement park’s ribbon-cutting event hosted by Golden Eagle this afternoon. So, Yichen decided to use himself as bait to lure them out. Tang Can and Hei Yu also stayed behind with a large group of people at the venue. Unexpectedly, they changed their plans at the last minute and struck at the cemetery. Fortunately, Yichen had already sent extra personnel to protect you on the outside, which allowed the personnel to be redirected in time. It was a close call, but luckily, no major harm was done.”

The brief explanation sounded plain, but it concealed the countless lives, blood, risks, and fear involved. Having personally experienced the events of the day, Chu Yunhan now fully grasped how treacherous this path was. After understanding the cause and effect, the panic in his heart subsided a little. He took a sip of tea to soothe his throat, which felt parched and burning. Yet, his mind suddenly conjured the image of Chu Yichen standing solemnly before his father’s gravestone.

—I will take good care of him, please rest assured.

What if that person’s original plan was to use himself as bait in the afternoon to lure the Sheng family into making a move? Then what kind of feelings did he harbour when he said this sentence? His appearance at the cemetery this morning—was it truly for homage, or…

       Was it to see him?

To see him, possibly for the last time?

When this thought suddenly came into his mind, his whole body froze.

“Go and take a rest.” Chu Yu said gently when he saw that his face was pale.

He shook his head, “I’ll wait here.”

       Wait for what?

He knew it in his heart but couldn’t say it aloud.

Thunder exploded in the distance, rumbling furiously in the dark clouds. The gloomy sky was split in half by lightning, the wind blew the trees in the yard, and the rain poured heavily.

Chu Yunhan stood behind the railing in the corridor, staring closely in the direction of the door. The cold wind ruffled his brown hair and slapped his face with wetness.

At last, a figure appeared in the empty doorway.

       Closer and closer.

The man walking in front stopped when he saw him.

That handsome, striking face was smeared with blood, blending with the rain. His black coat was soaked, water dripping steadily from its edges. Yet his posture remained tall and composed, like a tree growing skyward or a lone wolf standing proud and unyielding.

At that moment, the entire world seemed to lose its colour.

All that remained were those dark eyes, gazing at him through the rain, tender as water.

       “I’m back.”

Chapter 26 – Itchy And Tingly, Like a Jolt Of Electricity.

“What song does everyone want to hear today?” Da Fei even turned on a voice changer during the live broadcast. The sugary tone made Gu Lizhou shudder.

Rows of comments flew by rapidly on the screen:

So beautiful today!

Goddess, Goddess, Goddess!

Da Fei looked at the comments and smiled more bashfully than Meng Jingshi from next door.

Gu Lizhou felt as if his throat was being choked and couldn’t utter a word.

His three world views collapsed.

Da Fei, you’re even prettier today!

Why are you so late today?

Da Fei explained, “The shop was busy. I worked overtime until after 10 p.m., then came home, took a shower, and changed into fresh clothes.”

Get some rest, baby.

Take care of your voice. You’re a little hoarse.

“What does he do for a living ah?” Gu Lizhou asked.

En? I haven’t mentioned it?” Zhong Weishi said. “Da Fei is the Chief Stylist at ‘Legendary Hair Salon’ on Yueshan Street.”

Zhong Weishi pointed to his own hair. “See this? He cut it for me. A wash, cut, and blow-dry—all for just 15 yuan. Not much different from the 3,600 you spent on yours, right? Da Fei graduated from a professional hairdressing academy and has unlimited potential. Next time, just mention his name—Fly, that’s Da Fei. He’ll definitely give you a discount.”

Zhong Weishi’s hair wasn’t permed or dyed, just a simple cut, barely considered a style. But this unremarkable hairstyle, paired with his outstandingly handsome face, would easily make him the most handsome guy on campus.

Gu Lizhou was slightly tempted. He thought that getting the same campus-heartthrob haircut might take years off his age. So he asked, “How much extra for care treatments?”

“Ca-care treatments?” Zhong Weishi, whose vocabulary didn’t even include those two words, scratched his cheek and asked, “What exactly do you want to take care of?”

Gu Lizhou: “… Forget it.”

Just then, a user with the ID “The Strongest on Earth” sent a virtual airplane, worth 999 yuan.

At the top of the screen, a dazzling special effect of a fighter jet flying across appeared.

[The Strongest on Earth]: How about a song <Romance in the Rain>.

The boldness, the tone, the song request—it perfectly embodied the image of a deep love and domineering CEO.

Da Fei clasped his hands together in front of the camera, smiling so hard he looked like a blooming flower. “Thank you, The Strongest on Earth, for the airplane. Thank you, thank you, thank you…”

The joy of the harvest rushed out of the screen.

Gu Lizhou, having never watched a live broadcast before, didn’t understand how much these gifts were worth. But judging from the repeated “thank yous” and the anchor’s radiant smile, he could tell it was a big deal—completely different from the lukewarm reaction earlier when someone with an “F” in their name sent a gift.

Soon after, another user named “Oops, That’s That What It Feels Like” sent an aircraft carrier.

The aircraft carrier was the most expensive gift on the platform, worth 1,314 RMB. Its special effect featured Grandpa Mao falling and colorful fireworks that lasted for several seconds.

Just the special effect alone had to be worth at least ten yuan!

Gu Lizhou clicked his tongue twice. He felt that for the first time, he was out of touch with modern trends. He couldn’t understand what young people these days were thinking—staying up late watching stuff like this. What was the appeal?

“fvck! Da Fei’s hit the jackpot ah! He’s got die-hard fans now!” Zhong Weishi exclaimed, slapping his thigh.

Gu Lizhou was startled by his sudden movement, “How much can he even make from singing all night? Enough to buy a bowl of noodles?”

Zhong Weishi’s eyes widened like little brass bells. Once again, he felt the enormous generational gap between himself and the elderly.

‘The Strongest on Earth’ sent an aircraft carrier.

‘Oops, That’s That What It Feels Like’ sent out two aircraft carriers.

‘The Strongest on Earth’ sent three aircraft carriers.

‘Oops, That’s That What It Feels Like’ sent four aircraft carriers.

Zhong Weishi was completely dumbfounded.

Not only was he stunned, but Da Fei was also at a loss for words.

The Strongest on Earth was actually Qiangzi’s alternate account. Many of the IDs in the live broadcast room were people Qiangzi had invited as plants to create an illusion of popularity and success—like how a small roadside stall crowded with people draws curious bystanders to stop and check it out.

With tens of thousands of yuan coming in, the amount was staggering. However, the platform would take a 50% cut from the anchor’s tips as a handling fee.

This wave of operation is a bit hard to understand.

Da Fei, worried that Qiangzi wouldn’t be able to handle the hefty handling fees, was so anxious that his Taiwanese accent slipped out. “Stop sending gifts already, okay lah!”

In Zhong Weishi’s memory, ‘Oops, That’s That What It Feels Like’ had been to the livestream several times before. It was evident that this user now viewed ‘The Strongest on Earth’ as a love rival, furiously competing by sending more gifts.

And Qiangzi, that idiot, was actually willing to splurge despite the exorbitant fees. Was this what they meant by “you can’t catch the wolf without risking the child”?

The user who sent the most gifts would earn the glorious right to request a song.

[Oops, That’s That What It Feels Like]: I want to hear you sing <Love You>.

[The Strongest on Earth]: <Lull Me to Sleep> <Lull Me to Sleep> <Lull Me to Sleep>!!!

Both of them wanted to win the heart of the ‘beauty’, turning the whole scene into a dog blood show. Gu Lizhou was watching, utterly dumbstruck.

“Does that guy spamming gifts know that Da Fei is a man?”

“Know ah. Da Fei’s whole gimmick is cross-dressing for his live broadcast.”

“Then why is he still…” Gu Lizhou trailed off, unsure how to even comment.

“You don’t get it! They’re into this kind of thing,” Zhong Weishi said, pointing at the leaderboard. “See here? There’s a fan ranking. You can see how much each person has tipped. It’s all about gaining favor.”

Gu Lizhou really didn’t understand.

He didn’t get the taste of today’s younger generation, nor could he grasp the point of climbing a leaderboard.

Was it to get the anchor’s attention?

But at the end of the day, he was still a man ah! What was the point of gaining his favor ah! To date him!

Mobile Hotspot felt tired, he pulled the blanket over himself and closed his eyes.

Zhong Weishi put on his headphones and continued watching the live broadcast.

Recently, Da Fei’s talent shows had become increasingly diverse, even including square dancing, and the live broadcast room was in a frenzy.

This was a happy time that belonged to the otakus.

“Hey, do you think if I streamed myself doing fancy flips, will anyone watch?” Zhong Weishi asked.

“Aside from me, your captive audience, probably no one,” Gu Lizhou replied, his voice muffled and hoarse from beneath the blanket.

Zhong Weishi gave him a look. “Tch.”

Half an hour later, Gu Lizhou’s phone died and shut off automatically.

With no mobile hotspot to rely on, Zhong Weishi had no choice but to exit the live broadcast. He rolled over, pulled up his little blanket, and fell fast asleep within five minutes.

The old man beside him, who had spent over half an hour trying and failing to fall asleep, listened to the faint snoring and sank once again into deep contemplation about life and society.

Is the live broadcast platform considered a profitable industry? What kind of operations team would it take to develop such an app? Could such a team be used for money laundering?

What about minors using their parents’ phones to send tips? Should the platform bear some responsibility?

When Da Fei meets viewers in person, would he wear men’s or women’s clothing?

Is ‘Oops, That’s That What It Feels Like’ male or female?

What’s the purpose of exchanging WeChat? To chat? Meet up? Hook up? Or start a relationship?

And what if Da Fei encounters an organ-harvesting maniac? Would he have time to call for help?

Police receive a report of a body discovered in an old apartment building. During the autopsy, the coroner finds that the female victim is actually a man!

Following this sudden spark of inspiration, Gu Lizhou began constructing character profiles, frameworks, main plotlines, subplots, and foreshadowing, weaving in elements of friendship, family, love, justice, betrayal, and the complexity of human nature…

It could be a dark revenge drama. The protagonist could be a serial killer burdened by national and personal grievances, targeting the son of a corrupt government official who once caused him to lose his comrades. This could unravel a massive drug trafficking case…

Or, taking another perspective, if the protagonist were an undercover agent.. it could be a suspenseful detective story about justice and brotherhood.

The more he thought about it, the more hyperactive he became; and the harder it was to fall asleep.

In the latter half of the night, Zhong Weishi was still dreaming. Half-asleep, he felt a bit chilly, so he turned over, curling up like a little puppy in a hurry to drink milk. He burrowed toward the nearest warm spot.

After his forehead hit something, he quieted down and continued to dream.

Gu Li Zhou’s eyes widened in the darkness.

When he felt Zhong Weishi start to roll over, he instinctively backed away, pressing his back completely against the wall. But now, his chest was met with a warm, fuzzy head, exhaling hot breath against him. He felt like the filling in a sandwich.

“Ugh.” Gu Lizhou rolled his eyes at the ceiling..

The rag Zhong Weishi had tossed to him was flimsy, with a wide neckline. Any slight movement caused soft strands of hair to brush against his skin.

The sensation of touching the same thing with your palm versus your chest was completely different.

His weathered palms could only register softness, but his chest felt itchy and tingly, like a jolt of electricity.

Especially when Zhong Weishi raised his arm and dr4p3d it over his thigh—Gu Lizhou almost jumped straight out of bed.

What’s wrong with this guy!

What are you doing on a hot day like this!

Dreaming of being a koala!

The room was so quiet that the only sound was the steady rhythm of a certain someone’s breathing.

Gu Lizhou initially tried to endure it, hoping Zhong Weishi would eventually roll over on his own. But he didn’t. Instead, the warm breath on Gu Lizhou’s chest only made the itchiness and discomfort worse.

A sticky feeling.

How could anyone sleep like this?

Gu Lizhou grabbed Zhong Weishi’s arm with one hand, pressed his shoulder with the other, and gave him a firm push forward.

Zhong Weishi rolled half a turn.

Gu Lizhou was certain this move would wake him up, so he immediately closed his eyes and pretended to be dead.

Unexpectedly, not only did Zhong Weishi not wake up, but he lay in 大 shape for less than half a minute before soft snores started up again.

Gu Lizhou: “…”

One of Gu Lizhou’s legs swung over Zhong Weishi as he reached for the phone on the nightstand.

Zhong Weishi hadn’t changed his password, so after unlocking the phone, Gu Lizhou prepared to record the snores as a ringtone.

The faint light from the phone screen outlined a shallow silhouette in the dark.

Because he didn’t sleep in the right position on the pillow, Zhong Weishi’s head was slightly tilted back, his mouth half-open.

A childish, defenseless sleeper.

Gu Lizhou stared for a moment, then couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Click.” The sound of a shutter echoed, accompanied by the flash, lighting up the quiet room like a bolt of lightning. Gu Lizhou froze, his hair standing on end. He hurriedly clutched his phone and shoved it under the blanket.

The same brat who had repeatedly warned before bed, “I’m a light sleeper, don’t toss and turn, or you’ll wake me up,” hadn’t stopped snoring for a second.

What kind of sleep state was this!

Gu Lizhou felt genuine envy deep in his heart.

It was 3:30 a.m.

Mobile hotspot still couldn’t sleep.

The air conditioner in the room was old and lacked a thermostat function. When it was on, it felt too cold; when it was off, it became too hot. Occasionally, the sound of passing cars could be heard from outside.

For someone with chronic insomnia, even breathing sounds could be a disturbance, let alone someone fidgeting nearby.

Normally, Gu Lizhou would wear earplugs or listen to sleep-aid music. But tonight, neither option was available, so he lay still, letting his thoughts wander aimlessly.

At some point, the blanket Zhong Weishi had wrapped himself in slid to the floor. Combined with his tossing and turning, his stomach was now exposed.

Gu Lizhou glanced over, adjusted the air conditioner two degrees warmer, pulled his own blanket over Zhong Weishi’s flat stomach, and gave it a gentle pat.

Chapter 56 – I listened to the young general’s story about the past.

Xiao Jinzi was also stunned, forgetting to offer He Changzhou a handkerchief. He Changzhou, with a face full of noodle soup, stared at the petrified Zhao Qi, his tone even more resolute. “Your Majesty, I’m serious. Please believe me.”

Zhao Qi felt like his brain had stalled. He stared blankly at He Changzhou’s face, his pupils in shock, unable to utter a word.

Who am I? Why am I sitting here? Who is the person in front of me? What is the boundary of the universe…

He hadn’t read much, so was there someone who could explain to him if the phrase “treated as one’s own” meant what he thought it did?

Zhao Qi stiffly turned his head and glanced at Xiao Jinzi, the “informed person.” Xiao Jinzi’s mouth was wide open, as if he had swallowed a goose egg.

He Changzhou continued, “In the past few days, I’ve thought long and hard, but my head feels like it’s going to explode and I still don’t know what to do. I never imagined Your Majesty could have children. If I had known, I would have done everything to ensure that you were pregnant with my child.”

Zhao Qi was so overwhelmed by the number of points of contention that he didn’t even know which sentence to be flustered by. “You… what did you say?”

He Changzhou showed an expression of regret and self-reproach. “It’s my fault; I was too slow, and someone else got there first. Did that bastard make a clean break after using me, and that’s why the Emperor only found me now?”

“… Huh?”

He Changzhou reached out and took Zhao Qi’s hand. Zhao Qi’s hand was delicate and fair, just like a girl’s, and He Changzhou could completely envelop it in his palm.

“Honestly speaking, just thinking about someone doing that to the Emperor and making him pregnant with a child, I felt so jealous and angry I nearly died. When the Emperor sought my opinion before, although I said repeatedly that it was up to him to decide, deep down, I couldn’t stand the thought of you having a child with another man.” He Changzhou gave a sorrowful smile. “I think, not just me, but any man would find it unbearable. But when the Emperor personally came to find me today, and I saw you the moment the door opened, I realized how selfish I had been.”

Zhao Qi: “…”

“That’s not just another man’s child; it’s also the Emperor’s child.” He Changzhou continued. “It might be a little boy, one who looks just like the Emperor, with fair skin and big eyes, even when he’s not showing any expressions, he’d still seem to be smiling happily.”

“I could teach him to ride horses, to shoot arrows. If he doesn’t want to study, I could take him to skip classes… ‘Maybe’ if we have a little horse, we could give ‘Little Maybe’ to him as a birthday gift. When he grows up a bit more, I could take him to the military camp to experience life, to bow and rein, to gallop across the battlefield, and to protect the Emperor.”

“Emperor, have the child, and let it bear your surname, enter the imperial lineage. The He family won’t compete with you. I’ve even thought of a name for him: ‘Zhao Yun.’ How does that sound?”

Before Zhao Qi could respond, Xiao Jin was already moved to tears, covering his mouth and saying, “General He, you’re truly performing an act of extraordinary righteousness that shakes the heavens and moves the spirits!”

He Changzhou had poured out his heartfelt words and felt relieved. The gloom and despair of the past few days had dissipated, and the youthful vigor he once had returned. “Emperor, say something.”

Meeting He Changzhou’s slightly shy gaze, Zhao Qi felt an urge to slap him and then slap himself. “He Changzhou, whose child am I pregnant with?!”

He Changzhou was stunned. “The Emperor is asking me?”

Zhao Qi stood up, grabbing He Changzhou’s collar across the table, and said in despair, “If it’s not yours, why are you making such a claim!”

Given the disparity in their strengths, He Changzhou could easily break free, but he obediently let Zhao Qi hold him, widening his innocent eyes. “What?”

“In the palace, I asked if you were the one on the night of the Longevity Festival, and you clearly said ‘yes!’”

He Changzhou looked bewildered. “Indeed, I was the one who sent the Emperor back to the palace.”

“And after sending me back, what did you do?”

“I… I bit the Emperor.” He Changzhou glanced at Zhao Qi’s shoulder. “On the Emperor’s shoulder.”

“Besides that,” Zhao Qi’s voice trembled, “what else did you do?!”

“Nothing else.”

Zhao Qi’s mind buzzed, and his hands fell weakly from He Changzhou’s body.

He was wrong, terribly wrong, outrageously wrong! He had misunderstood his best friend, made He Changzhou bear the blame for so long, and even bit He Changzhou’s shoulder until it bled. Was he even human? He was a beast!

With his level of intelligence, how could he still have the face to be a monarch? Couldn’t he have clarified things? He and He Changzhou were so close; a single question, “Have you slept with me?” could have resolved the issue, yet why couldn’t he bring himself to ask?!

Thinking about his actions towards He Changzhou over this period, guilt and regret almost drowned him.

Zhao Qi bowed his head, remaining still for a long time.

“Emperor?” He Changzhou placed his hand on Zhao Qi’s shoulder, the very spot where he had left his bite mark. “What’s wrong? Did I say something wrong?”

Zhao Qi sniffed and slowly lifted his head. Seeing his slightly reddened eyes, He Changzhou was at a loss. “I’m sorry, Emperor. I spoke out of turn.”

Zhao Qi shook his head and said seriously, “You’re not at fault. It’s my mistake. I’m sorry. You can scold me.”

He Changzhou, with his face still uncleaned, looked dazed upon hearing Zhao Qi’s apology. “Emperor…”

Zhao Qi felt like crying and laughing at the same time. He pulled out his handkerchief and handed it to He Changzhou. “Here, wipe your face.”

He Changzhou blinked. “The Emperor is helping me?”

He Changzhou was now in a position of moral high ground. Zhao Qi, feeling guilty, naturally obliged his small request. However, he was quite unskilled at this task; rather than wiping his face, it was more like smearing it.

He Changzhou closed his eyes and let Zhao Qi fumble with his face. Not only did he not complain, but he also seemed to enjoy it.

When Zhao Qi had almost finished, He Changzhou grabbed his wrist. “Emperor, have you agreed? Have the child, name him Zhao Yun, and we’ll raise him together.”

Zhao Qi confessed, “To be honest, I always thought the dragon egg was yours.”

He Changzhou was once again confused, and he slowly asked, “So… whose child is it?”

Zhao Qi, feeling very frustrated, said, “I want to know too.”

He Changzhou stared in shock and fear. “You didn’t… do it with many people?”

“Where did you get that idea? Am I that kind of person?” Zhao Qi quickly cleared up, “During the palace banquet, someone gave me a drug, and I got drunk. In my daze, I grabbed someone to serve me, and after waking up, that person ran away, and I don’t even know who he was.”

“So, the Emperor wasn’t willing?” He Changzhou’s smile gradually spread. “You didn’t do it because you liked that person?”

“I liked him? I… Hmph,” Zhao Qi said angrily, “I wish I could castrate that person. I liked him?!”

At this point, He Changzhou understood everything. His feelings were very mixed—partially relieved, mostly resentful, and completely regretful.

On the night of the Longevity Festival, he had sent the Emperor back to Yonghua Palace. At that time, the Emperor was particularly clingy, with a flushed face and an extremely hot body. Even his breathing was hot. The Emperor was in his arms, twisting and turning, and said in a small voice, “Don’t hug me, carry me.”

When he placed the Emperor on the bed, the Emperor was already asleep. He crouched by the bed, watching him for a long time, and the more he looked, the more he found it incredible.

How could a boy like the Emperor be so delicate, with rosy lips and white teeth, small enough to be like a girl? His personality was so carefree and thoughtless, as if he never took anything seriously.

He seemed to be enchanted, reaching out a hand towards the Emperor and gently stroking his delicate cheek, then leaning in to cover him.

Just as their lips were only an inch apart, the Emperor suddenly murmured something incomprehensible, turning his face to the side. It was as if he had just woken from a deep dream. He straightened up abruptly and walked out.

The cool night breeze blew, dispersing the heat from his face. He stood there for a while, and after his heartbeat gradually calmed down, he felt some hesitation about whether he should leave or stay.

He wasn’t sure what he would do if he stayed by the Emperor’s side. But if he left just like that, he was also uneasy.

The Emperor seemed to be very drunk. There were no palace maids or eunuchs in Yonghua Palace earlier. What if the Emperor vomited? Who would take care of him?

When he returned to the hall, the Emperor seemed to have woken up, his eyes barely open, and his face redder than before.

“Your face is so red. Are you really that drunk?” He reached out and touched the Emperor’s cheek, but the Emperor recoiled slightly, as if avoiding his touch.

“You…” He stared at his own hand in a daze, pursing his lips. “I’ll go find a physician.”

Just as he was about to get up, the Emperor grabbed the corner of his clothes. “Don’t leave! Don’t, don’t leave me alone…”

At that moment, he was completely stunned.

“It’s so hot, why is it so hot?” The Emperor was pulling at his dragon robe chaotically, mumbling incoherently. “Help me, help me take it off.”

He felt a pang in his chest. Help the Emperor undress? And then what would he do?

The Emperor’s voice started to choke. “I’m going to die from the heat! No, I’m going to roast to death…”

He was once again tempted, reaching out a hand towards the Emperor.

To remove the dragon robe, he would first need to untie the jade belt around the waist. As soon as he touched the Emperor, his breathing grew heavier, and sweat formed on his forehead. An unexpected thought surged from deep within him—possess him, leave his mark on him, so that he would belong to him alone in the future.

His hands seemed to move on their own, forcefully pulling at the dragon robe.

The Emperor’s slender, pale shoulders came into view. He could no longer endure it and, like a wild beast, used his sharp fangs to leave an indelible mark on his prey.

The Emperor cried out in pain, crawling forward desperately, but was pulled back by him holding his waist, biting even deeper into his shoulder.

The Emperor struggled weakly, making pitiful yet strangely exciting sounds. Then, his body relaxed, and he fell into a deep sleep.

It wasn’t until he tasted a faint trace of blood in his mouth that he realized what he had done. He had lost control.

He was shocked by his own reaction and vaguely felt that if he stayed by the Emperor’s side, he might do even more painful things to him.

He didn’t want to hurt the Emperor. He didn’t want the Emperor to suffer.

So, he left, almost fleeing in a panic.

He blamed himself for biting the Emperor and never imagined that someone else would come to Yonghua Palace after him and do what he had always wanted to do but didn’t know how to or dared to.

Recalling this, He Changzhou suddenly said in a deep voice, “Prince Zhao Nan.”

Zhao Qi thought he had misheard. “What?”

“When I left Yonghua Palace that day, I saw Prince Zhao Nan nearby. Could it be that the Emperor…”
