Chapter 23 – I often seem out of tune with you because I am too pure.

Zhao Qi squirmed uneasily in Xiao Shiqing’s arms. “Prime Minister, aren’t we going back to the palace?”

“I meant going home,” Xiao Shiqing said in a deep voice. “Stop moving around.”

Zhao Qi replied, “…Oh.”

The Xiao residence was located in the best part of the capital, just two streets away from the imperial palace. For many of Xiao’s political allies, the Xiao residence was the real symbol of power, more so than the imperial palace.

Xiao Shiqing’s parents were still alive. His father had retired three years ago after achieving great success and had returned to his hometown to enjoy his retirement; he was now living on a farm in the outskirts of the capital. Xiao Shiqing’s mother had originally been with his father, but upon realizing that such a large residence had no mistress, she couldn’t bear to leave it unattended and had moved back to the capital to manage the household affairs for Xiao Shiqing.

Since Xiao Shiqing had risen to the position of Chief Minister, he had been constantly occupied with state affairs and often stayed at the palace, only returning home three or four times a month. Every time he returned, the servants would inform his mother, and today was no exception.

“What did you say?” Xiao’s mother asked in disbelief. “Xiao Shiqing has come back and he’s holding a girl in his arms? Are you sure you didn’t see wrongly? He’s holding a girl, not a scroll of petitions?”

The servant replied, “Old Madam, I saw it clearly. The Prime Minister is indeed holding a girl, dressed in bright red clothes, very festive.”

Xiao’s mother closed her eyes, clasped her hands together, and murmured, “Blessed Buddha, blessed Buddha, my son has finally seen the light!”

The servant added, “But Old Madam, I heard that the Prime Minister picked this girl up from Spring Breeze Pavillion. Given what kind of place Spring Breeze Pavillion is, I’m afraid the girl might…”

Xiao’s mother waved her hand dismissively, saying, “What does it matter if it’s Spring Breeze Pavillion or Xiayu Tower? As long as she’s a girl, that’s all that counts!”

The servant chuckled, “Old Madam must be overjoyed.”

Xiao’s mother could barely contain her excitement. “Yes, I’ve waited so long for this day. Xiao Shiqing is so proud and has such high standards. I’ve found so many concubines and maidservants for him, but he didn’t like any of them. Over the years, he’s been so busy with state affairs that he hasn’t had the time or inclination for romance. I never expected him to have a day like this. I thought he would spend his life with official documents!”

The servant said, “Maybe next year Old Madam will have a grandchild. This is truly a great joy!”

Xiao’s mother, delighted, asked, “Do we still have the secret recipe we got from the palace last time?”

The servant replied, “The recipe for the childbirth medicine? Yes, I’ve kept it safe.”

“Quickly prepare a batch. Send it to the girl first thing tomorrow morning!”

Xiao Shiqing carried Zhao Qi into the room and placed him on the bed behind the screen. Zhao Qi didn’t dare move or ask questions, simply staring up at Xiao Shiqing with his big eyes full of confusion.

Xiao Shiqing calmly explained, “You’re not in a condition to return to the palace. You’ll stay here for the night and go back tomorrow.”

Zhao Qi asked, “Oh… or could the Prime Minister provide me with a change of clothes so I can change and then go back to the palace?”

Xiao Shiqing replied, “I’m very busy.”

“Huh?”

“I don’t have time to escort you.”

“I don’t need you to escort me…”

Xiao Shiqing coolly said, “Does the Emperor think the Xiao residence is unfit to host the Emperor for one night?”

Zhao Qi protested, “I didn’t say that.”

“Then just stay here properly.”

Zhao Qi reluctantly nodded, “Prime Minister, about the clothes…”

Xiao Shiqing looked at him and smiled slightly, “I said, since the Emperor likes wearing them, you might as well wear them a bit longer.”

Zhao Qi: “…”

“I have other matters to attend to. The Emperor should rest now.”

After Xiao Shiqing left, several maidservants came in with hot water and towels to help Zhao Qi wash his face. Zhao Qi had removed his makeup, but he was still wearing his dress, which gave him an ambiguous appearance.

The maidservants didn’t dare speak much and left as soon as they were done. Zhao Qi had long since lost his desire to sleep and began examining the room. The room was spacious, with only the essentials and no extra items, indicating that the owner rarely stayed there.

Zhao Qi climbed into bed, still wearing his skirt. He stared at the ceiling, recalling the events of the day, and felt his face grow hot again. He lifted his arm to cover his eyes and muttered, “What a sin…”

It was rare for Xiao Shiqing to spend a night at home. Any matters that needed decisions from Xiao Mu had to wait for him to handle. His trusted steward presented dozens of invitations and letters. Xiao Shiqing glanced at the beginnings of most but paid no further attention, except for one invitation, which he read from start to finish.

The steward recognized the invitation. “Prime Minister, this is an invitation from the King of Huai.”

“Hmm,” Xiao Shiqing replied, “The person hasn’t arrived yet, but the invitation has come ahead.”

The steward said, “The King of Huai has official business and can discuss it with the Prime Minister at the palace. If he wishes to visit in person now, it must be for personal matters—will the Prime Minister receive him at the residence?”

Xiao Shiqing thought for a moment. “No need to reply to this invitation. If the King of Huai really comes, treat him as you would any other guest.”

The steward nodded in agreement.

Xiao Shiqing then asked, “Have there been any unusual activities from the big households you’ve been monitoring lately?”

The two of them talked until the fifth watch. When Xiao Shiqing returned to his room, the little emperor was sleeping soundly on his bed, his cheeks flushed, lips slightly parted, and a red skirt peeking out from the covers.

Xiao Shiqing sat by the bed, looking at the face he had previously underestimated, feeling an unusual sense of confusion in his eyes.

Since when had he started to think of this face as “innocent and cheerful, candid and lovable”?

A maid tiptoed in. “Prime Minister, it’s time to go to the palace for court.”

Xiao Shiqing came back to his senses and called out, “Your Majesty.”

There was no response.

He shook Zhao Qi a few times. Zhao Qi frowned, opened his eyes a crack, mumbled something, grabbed his hand and pulled it into his embrace, then closed his eyes again.

Xiao Shiqing’s eyes darkened slightly, his other hand slowly closing into a fist.

After a short while, the maid urged again, “Prime Minister, if you don’t get up now, you’ll be late for court.”

Xiao Shiqing replied with a “Hmm,” withdrew his hand, and directly lifted the blanket.

On the bed, the little emperor’s long hair was scattered over the pillow, with a few strands in his mouth; the crimson Confucian robe was in disarray, interwoven with the black hair, creating a bewitching scene.

Zhao Qi shivered, trying to grab the blanket but found nothing. He opened his eyes, gradually waking up, looked at the familiar face, and called out, “Prime Minister brother.”

Xiao Shiqing shifted his gaze slightly. “Get up, it’s time for court.”

Xiao Shiqing, finally showing some mercy, allowed Zhao Qi to change into male attire. Zhao Qi asked, “Prime Minister brother, are we already late?”

“Hmm.”

“What should we do then?”

“They will wait,” Xiao Shiqing said, referring to the officials.

After some commotion, the two were ready to leave the residence but were stopped by Granny Shen, who was beside Xiao Mu. Granny Shen was a maid who accompanied Xiao Mu into marriage. Xiao Shiqing treated her differently from ordinary servants. “Granny, is there something you need?”

Granny Shen, holding a bowl of soup, glanced at Zhao Qi. “Oh? Prime Minister, where is the young lady you brought back last night?”

Zhao Qi looked up innocently—he had no idea.

Xiao Shiqing asked, “What about it?”

“I was sent by the old lady to deliver this soup to the young lady.”

Xiao Shiqing inquired, “Soup?”

“The confinement soup from the palace.”

“Cough, cough—cough, cough, cough—” Zhao Qi started coughing violently, his face turning almost as red as blood—It’s hard to fit in when you’re not twisted enough.

Xiao Shiqing laughed and said, “Granny, leave it in the room. I’ll have him drink it later.”

Zhao Qi covered his mouth: You’re not getting him to drink it!

In Taihua Hall, the civil and military officials had been waiting for half an hour, but neither the Prime Minister nor the Emperor had made an appearance.

He Changzhou leaned against a pillar in the hall, arms crossed, looking at the Emperor’s dragon throne and Xiao Shiqing’s sandalwood chair, lost in thought.

The Minister of the Army approached him. “General He, why are both the Prime Minister and the Emperor so late today?”

He Changzhou replied lazily, “Why are you asking me? Who should I ask?”

The Minister of the Army showed curiosity. “Aren’t you curious, General He?”

“Curious,” He Changzhou nodded, “That’s why I plan to ask in person.”

The Minister of the Army sighed. “General He and Prime Minister Xiao have such a good relationship. If it were me, I wouldn’t dare to ask.”

He Changzhou smiled. “Who says I’m going to ask the Prime Minister?”

The Minister of the Army was surprised. “Then who are you going to ask—”

Suddenly, the ministers who had been whispering fell silent. He Changzhou turned his head and saw Xiao Shiqing standing at the door of the hall.

Xiao Shiqing walked past everyone and had just sat down on the sandalwood chair when a eunuch announced loudly, “The Emperor has arrived—”

He Changzhou and the other officials knelt and saluted, looking up at the Emperor on the dragon throne.

The Emperor seemed to have had a poor night’s sleep, yawning even while saying “You may rise.”

He Changzhou attended the court distractedly, and while Xiao Shiqing was discussing the palace examination matters with the Ministry of Rites, he went to the Palace of Governance.

Since he started managing state affairs, Zhao Qi’s residence had shifted from Yonghua Palace to the Palace of Governance. When He Changzhou arrived, Zhao Qi was bent over, deeply engrossed in calculations.

He Changzhou said, “Your Majesty.”

Zhao Qi looked up. “He Changzhou, you’re here.”

He Changzhou walked to the desk and looked at Zhao Qi writing a series of strange characters. “What is Your Majesty writing?”

“Um, the country’s figures,” Zhao Qi put down his pen with a sigh. “He Changzhou, I’m so poor.”

He Changzhou laughed. “How so?”

“I just calculated the money in the treasury and lost quite a bit of hair,” Zhao Qi counted on his fingers. “We need money for the imperial examinations, for the longevity festival, for maintaining the army… Recently, there have been major floods in the south, which means we need money for disaster relief and flood control. I originally wanted them to cancel the longevity festival, which is just my birthday anyway, and have a nice meal made for me, but my mother wouldn’t agree to it no matter what.”

He Changzhou said, “Your Majesty, the longevity festival is not just your birthday. It’s also the day when the various local princes return to the capital and the envoys from other countries come to pay their respects. If any year the longevity festival is not held, what will the neighboring countries think of our Great Jing?”

Zhao Qi sighed and said, “You’re saying the same thing as the Empress Dowager. What troubles me the most right now is the major flooding in the south. The funds are limited. Should we prioritize disaster relief or flood control?”

He Changzhou pondered for a moment and replied, “Your Majesty, instead of getting tangled up in this, why not think about how to fill the national treasury?”

Zhao Qi’s eyes lit up. “Do you have a solution?”

“The biggest expenditure in the treasury right now is the military salaries. I do have a way to save a sum for Your Majesty, but I have a condition.”

Zhao Qi asked, “What condition?”

He Changzhou smiled without speaking.

Zhao Qi grew a bit anxious and grabbed He Changzhou’s arm, urging, “Don’t leave me hanging like this; it’s killing me!”

He Changzhou chuckled, “The condition is that Your Majesty answers one question of mine and lets me hold you for a bit.”

Zhao Qi’s gaze at He Changzhou became complicated as he hesitated, “Changzhou…”

“Yes?”

“Do you really enjoy holding me?”

“Yes.”

“Then do you have… a particular fondness for… broken sleeves?”

He Changzhou was momentarily taken aback but then smiled, “I just find Your Majesty’s scent pleasant and holding you comfortable, like cuddling with a soft, fluffy cat.”

So you’re treating me like a pet. Zhao Qi said, “Fine, I agree. What do you want to ask?”

He Changzhou asked, “Where did Your Majesty go last night?”

Zhao Qi didn’t expect this question from He Changzhou, “Uh…”

“Your Majesty promised me, no reneging.”

Zhao Qi scratched his head, “I left the palace.”

“And then?”

Since avoiding the pain wasn’t any better than facing it, Zhao Qi decided to just blurt it out, “Then I went to Chunfeng Pavilion, and then the Prime Minister caught me there and took me back to his residence.”

He Changzhou’s expression was playful, “And then?”

Zhao Qi said, “Then I just fell asleep.”

“Just sleeping?”

Zhao Qi wondered, “What else could I do at that hour except sleep?”

He Changzhou smiled, “There are plenty of things one could do.”

Zhao Qi: “…” I suspect you’re hinting at something, and I have evidence.

He Changzhou leaned against the desk and casually twirled a document with his fingertips, “So, Your Majesty, have you tried it?”

“Try what?”

He Changzhou answered naturally, “What’s the elegant term for it—cloud and rain matters?”

“…” The pace of the conversation suddenly accelerated.

Before Zhao Qi could answer, He Changzhou continued, “Oh, I forgot, Your Majesty has three thousand beauties in the harem. This must be just everyday stuff for you.”

Zhao Qi corrected him, “Not three thousand, only twelve now.”

He Changzhou stopped his actions and looked down at Zhao Qi, “I haven’t tried it myself.”

“You’re still young.”

“Can Your Majesty tell me what it feels like?”

“Absolutely not!”

He Changzhou moved closer, “Why not?”

Thanks for the invitation, but I don’t know either.

Zhao Qi raised his hand to push He Changzhou’s face away, pretending to stay calm, “You can only ask me one question.”

He Changzhou shrugged, looking nonchalant, “Alright then. How about a hug?”

“Sure.” Zhao Qi planned to give him a brotherly hug but was surprised when He Changzhou supported his waist and lifted him up. Zhao Qi’s legs were off the ground, and he cried out in surprise, instinctively wrapping his arms around He Changzhou’s neck.

He Changzhou chuckled softly and placed him on the desk.

Zhao Qi, still in shock, said, “This isn’t how you hug people.”

He Changzhou replied confidently, “That’s how I always hug.”

“Really?” Zhao Qi was astonished, “Do you hug your comrades in the army like this too?”

He Changzhou imagined the scene and frowned, “I don’t hug them, only you.” He rested his chin on Zhao Qi’s shoulder, taking a deep breath, “You really smell wonderful…”

Zhao Qi looked up in resignation—oh, citizens of Great Jing, I have sacrificed so much for you.

A few days later, it was time for the triennial palace examination. The successful candidates from the preliminary exams were writing furiously in Taihua Hall. Zhao Qi walked around the hall, stopping behind a candidate, pretending to observe and nodding seriously.

Zhao Qi stood behind this candidate for quite some time, but the candidate remained focused and wrote swiftly.

When Zhao Qi returned to his seat, Xiao Shiqing asked, “Can you understand it?”

Zhao Qi replied, “No. But his handwriting is very beautiful, and he’s written twice as much as the other candidates.”

“Is that so,” Xiao Shiqing asked casually, “What’s this person’s name?”

The chief examiner replied, “Replying to the Prime Minister, his surname is Xu and his given name is Qiu.”

Among all the candidates, Zhao Qi only remembered Xu Qiu. Besides writing fast and being the first to submit his paper, it was also because he looked somewhat indescribable—narrow eyes, thick lips, and a large mole on his face.

After the examination, the examiners immediately began grading the papers. According to Great Jing’s customs, the top scholar, second place, and third place should be selected by the Emperor himself. However, Zhao Qi, who had difficulty understanding the essays, wisely left this task to the chief examiner. After grading, the chief examiner presented the lists for the top three scholars to Zhao Qi, who looked through them and asked, “Xu Qiu didn’t make the list? I thought he was very impressive.”

The chief examiner and the deputy examiner exchanged glances, “Well…”

Zhao Qi asked, “What’s with that expression? Just speak your mind.”

The chief examiner said, “Your Majesty, Xu Qiu’s writing flows like a stream and every word is exquisite. Giving him the third place would not be unjust.”

Zhao Qi was puzzled, “Then why was he not selected?”

The chief examiner explained, “Your Majesty, Xu Qiu’s appearance is unattractive. If he were to become an official, it might harm the reputation of our Great Jing Emperor.”

Zhao Qi was both angry and amused, “You’re selecting talent, not choosing for looks. Are you judging him by his face?”

“Well…”

“If you ask me, as long as he has true talent and learning, even if he were a hundred times uglier, I wouldn’t mind,” Zhao Qi said, “I believe the common people won’t mind either.”

The chief examiner said, “The Emperor’s intention is to give him the title of ‘Top Scholar’?”

“No, the person should receive what they are due. Didn’t you just say he is at least a ‘Flowering Talent’?”

The chief examiner hesitated, “But Your Majesty, since ancient times, the ‘Flowering Talent’ is chosen based on beauty…”

The deputy examiner agreed, “Yes, Your Majesty. Three years ago, Young Master Rong should have been the ‘Second Place Scholar,’ but because of his outstanding appearance, he was demoted to ‘Flowering Talent.’”

“There’s such a thing… Forget about the past, starting this year, in future imperial examinations, you will only consider the candidates’ talent and virtue, and nothing else.”

The chief examiner and the deputy examiner fell silent, and both looked towards Prime Minister Xiao—without the Prime Minister’s orders, they dared not respond.

While Zhao Qi was arguing with the examiners, Xiao Shiqing had been listening quietly, saying nothing.

Xiao Shiqing took a sip of tea and said calmly, “Do as the Emperor says.”

The two examiners agreed repeatedly.

The news that the Emperor had appointed an unattractive person as the ‘Flowering Talent’ soon spread throughout the capital. The common people had mixed reactions, some praised it, while others called it absurd. After hearing about it, Rong Tang went to Zhao Qi and requested to review the examination papers of the top three scholars.

It was rare for Rong Tang to make such a request, so Zhao Qi’s response was, “Of course, of course. Whatever you want, I will give you!”

When Rong Tang was reviewing the papers, Zhao Qi sat beside him, eating snacks from the table. After Rong Tang finished, Zhao Qi asked, “How is it?”

Rong Tang replied, “It’s grand and profound, quite good.”

Zhao Qi smiled, “So, do you think he deserves the title of ‘Flowering Talent’?”

“Yes.”

“Good then,” Zhao Qi said, “I hope he won’t disappoint me.”

Rong Tang looked at him, “I heard the Emperor has decreed that future imperial examinations will only consider virtue and talent, nothing else.”

“It should have been like this from the beginning.” If it weren’t for the limitations of the era’s views, Zhao Qi would have wanted to allow women to take exams, promote national education, open up to the outside world, implement the rule of law, and establish monogamy. But he knew these ideas might not be suitable for the current Great Jing; he was just indulging in his thoughts.

Rong Tang said lightly, “Who would have thought that the Emperor would also have a day when he doesn’t judge people by their looks?”

Zhao Qi knew Rong Tang was thinking about the palace exam three years ago, when the cruel Emperor had taken an immediate liking to Rong Tang, and after being rejected, forced him into the palace using the lives of Rong Tang’s family.

Zhao Qi felt embarrassed and didn’t know what to say. He racked his brain for a topic, “Did you finish the candied fruits I gave you last time?”

Rong Tang responded with a soft “Mm.”

Zhao Qi smiled, “I’ll have more sent to you. You’re taking such bitter medicine, so you should eat more sweet things.”

Rong Tang gave a gentle smile, “You’re right, only sweetness can cure bitterness.”

Rong Tang rarely smiled, and when he did, his usual coldness seemed to melt into a pool of autumn water, leaving Zhao Qi a bit dazed. “Rong Tang, you should smile more and drink more hot water,” he said. “That way, you’ll recover faster.”

Rong Tang asked, “Does the Emperor often smile?”

“Yes,” Zhao Qi said shamelessly, “Look at me—optimistic, open-minded, never fussing over trivial matters; when facing setbacks, I smile. As the saying goes, ‘There will be times when the strong wind breaks the waves; just hang your sails to cross the vast sea!’ Rong Tang, you should learn from me.”

Rong Tang replied with an “Oh.”

Unfortunately, Zhao Qi soon couldn’t smile anymore.

Inside Yonghua Palace, Zhao Qi spat out the jujube pit from his mouth and said, “What did you say?”

Zhao Qiao cried, “Your Majesty, Li Chisu seems to be serious. He has already come to my house to propose marriage!”

“Wait… Who did he propose to?”

Zhao Qiao pitifully said, “Your Majesty, you may not know, but I have a mute half-sister who is not favored at home. My father even forgets her name. This morning, Li Chisu sent someone to propose to my family. My father thought that having a mute concubine as a princess was a huge fortune and agreed to the marriage without a word. Li Chisu even said he would come to the palace tomorrow to ask the Emperor to grant the marriage…”

Zhao Qi pinched his own philtrum, slumped back into his chair, and pounded the table, saying angrily, “The east wind is powerless, and the flowers are withering. He must be out of his mind!”

“There’s no way. It’s only because the Emperor is so beautiful that even a scoundrel like Li Chisu is infatuated. Only someone as stunning as the Emperor can make a rogue like Li Chisu turn back!”

Zhao Qi twitched his mouth. Even at a time like this, Zhao Qiao could still flatter him; Zhao Qi had to admire that.

“What should we do, Your Majesty,” Zhao Qiao cried, “If they really get married and Li Chisu discovers something is wrong, won’t he lead his army of a hundred thousand to flatten my family?”

Zhao Qi’s head hurt from the noise. “Now you’re scared? You were so arrogant in front of him back then. Also, flattening your family would only require a hundred men, not a hundred thousand.”

Zhao Qiao cried, “Your Majesty…”

“Stop crying and get a grip!” Zhao Qi said, “Let me analyze the situation calmly.”

Zhao Qiao closed his mouth, his small eyes filled with great grievance.

After a moment, Zhao Qi said, “As long as I don’t agree to this marriage, it won’t matter how much Li Chisu and your father hit it off. Besides, my mother definitely won’t agree. She has always wanted to marry Jia Yan off to Li Chisu.”

Zhao Qiao asked hesitantly, “Really?”

“Of course. Don’t worry, I will never let him get what he wants.” Zhao Qi said angrily, “Li Chisu, that philandering scoundrel, actually wants to marry me as a princess. Why doesn’t he just go to heaven!”

Chapter 52

Towards the end of the week, Zhan Pengcheng took advantage of his rare lack of work schedule to take the family out for another meal.

Today, he didn’t drive and instead took a cab so that he could have a drink with Pei Qing in the evening.

Pei Qing was fine with it, but when he heard Zhan Pengcheng say that he wanted to drink, he could not help asking, “Uncle, do you want to drink more?” He felt that Zhan Pengcheng drank too much alcohol every day at social gatherings outside, and it might be bad for his health.

Zhan Pengcheng said, “Of course I have to drink. Why? Don’t you want to drink with Uncle?”

Pei Qing could only smile and responded, “Then I will definitely accompany you.”

That night, Zhan Pengcheng drank a lot of wine. He said that it was mainly because he was in a good mood. While drinking, he stretched out a hand and pressed it on Pei Qing’s shoulder, saying, “You are really a good person, xiao Qing.”

Although Pei Qing drank, he was still sober. He smiled and did not speak.

Zhan Pengcheng said, “Yangyang is really well-behaved.”

Pei Qing nodded and said, “Yes.”

Zhan Pengcheng said in a low voice, leaning close to Pei Qing, sighing, “It’s just that I’m too busy at work and don’t have enough time to take care of him.”

“It can’t be helped.” Pei Qing knew that Zhan Pengcheng was very busy and tired. With such a big family, two children who were still in school, and a mother who was in poor health, he had to shoulder all the burdens.

Zhan Pengcheng usually didn’t say these words, but today after drinking and feeling that Pei Qing was already an adult, he couldn’t help but confide a few words, “Weiguang doesn’t play with him either. I’ve told him many times, but he’s still so irresponsible even though he’s already in college.”

Pei Qing glanced at Zhan Weiyang and saw that Zhan Weiyang was peeling shrimp shells obediently. He whispered to Zhan Pengcheng, “Weiguang is actually very good to Yangyang, but he just doesn’t like to express it.”

Zhan Pengcheng said, “I know, but his brother doesn’t know. You see, Yangyang doesn’t like Weiguang and likes to play with you.”

Pei Qing didn’t say anything. “Speaking of this,” Zhan Pengcheng raised his glass, “Come, today, your uncle must give you a toast.”

Pei Qing quickly raised his glass and said, “Uncle, you are too kind.”

Zhan Pengcheng said, “I know that during the two or three months since you came here, Yangyang has caused you a lot of trouble, and you have taken care of Yangyang a lot. Your uncle is really grateful to you, and I don’t know what I can do for you.”

Pei Qing said, “No worries about that. We are all family.”

Zhan Pengcheng sighed, “Yes, family. You are only three years older than Weiguang, but your personality is much calmer than his.”

Pei Qing said, “He has just entered college. The only difference between him and me is the social experience of college. It’s normal.”

Zhan Pengcheng laughed when he heard it, and couldn’t help patting Pei Qing’s shoulder with his hand, “Uncle likes you too much.”

       Pei Qing smiled lightly.

When they returned home after dinner, Zhan Pengcheng was drunk. This time he was really drunk. He held Pei Qing’s shoulders all the way from the private room to the restaurant door and chatted with him incoherently. He talked for a long time but couldn’t say a word clearly.

Zhan Weiyang looked at Zhan Pengcheng unhappily and said, “Dad, you’ve drunk too much.”

Zhan Pengcheng heard it, turned around to find Zhan Weiyang, and suddenly seemed surprised. He said, “Yangyang, how did you grow up so big secretly?” He stretched out his hand and pinched Zhan Weiyang’s face.

Drunk people didn’t know the severity of the situation. Zhan Weiyang screamed when he was pinched, and when Zhan Pengcheng let go of his hand, Zhan Weiyang found that his face was pinched red.

Pei Qing called a car when they went back. He first called a car for Zhan Weiyang to accompany his grandmother and Auntie Luo back, and he called another car to help Zhan Pengcheng get in.

Zhan Pengcheng squinted his eyes and raised his head. After a while, he leaned towards Pei Qing again and said in a low voice, “I have no choice. If I don’t make more money, what will happen to Yangyang in the future? Who should I leave him to after I’m gone? Is there any girl willing to marry him?”

Pei Qing glanced at Zhan Pengcheng and said softly, “Uncle, don’t worry, someone will take care of him.”

Zhan Pengcheng probably didn’t hear it.

Back home, Zhan Weiyang and Pei Qing helped Zhan Pengcheng to his room together. Zhan Pengcheng was already drunk and almost unconscious. As soon as he lay on the bed, he closed his eyes and began to snore.

Pei Qing stood at the end of the bed and helped him take off his shoes. He looked up and saw Zhan Weiyang standing at the head of the bed, gently patting Zhan Pengcheng’s face with his hands and calling him, “Dad? Dad?”

“Don’t bother him,” Pei Qing said, “Let him sleep.”

Zhan Weiyang turned his head to look at Pei Qing, then looked at Zhan Pengcheng worriedly and said to him, “Dad, you drank too much.”

       Zhan Pengcheng was still snoring.

Pei Qing looked at Zhan Pengcheng lying on the bed and said to Zhan Weiyang, “Help your dad take off his clothes and pants, I’ll get a towel to wipe his face, okay?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

Pei Qing entered the bathroom inside Zhan Pengcheng’s room. He looked at the towels hanging on the wall and didn’t know which one was which. He just picked the one that looked the cleanest, wet it with hot water and wrung it dry.

When he came back to the room, he saw Zhan Weiyang struggling to help Zhan Pengcheng take off his trousers, saying with difficulty, “Dad, you can’t drink so much in the future.”

Pei Qing came to help Zhan Weiyang, took off Zhan Pengcheng’s trousers, opened the quilt to cover him, and then wiped his face with a towel. When Pei Qing put the towel back in the bathroom, washed it and hung it up before coming out, he saw Zhan Weiyang still standing by the bed, looking at Zhan Pengcheng worriedly. He walked over and said, “It’s okay, uncle is asleep.”

Zhan Weiyang looked up at Pei Qing. Pei Qing patted his shoulder, “Let’s go out and let him sleep.”

Zhan Weiyang followed Pei Qing out, and saw Pei Qing gently close the door, and then said, “I’m a little scared.”

Pei Qing turned around and looked down at him, “What are you afraid of?”

Zhan Weiyang shook his head, “I don’t know.”

Pei Qing knew that he was still a child and comforted him, “It’s really okay. Your dad is just drunk. He will be fine tomorrow morning when he sobers up.”

After that, Pei Qing planned to go back to his room. He walked to the door and found that Zhan Weiyang was still following him closely, so he turned back and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him and asked, “Why aren’t you drunk?”

Pei Qing bent down and said to him softly, “I’m drunk too, but not as drunk as your dad.”

Zhan Weiyang got close to him and smelled it.

Pei Qing asked, “Do you smell alcohol?”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded.

Pei Qing asked him again, “Does it smell bad?”

Zhan Weiyang lowered his head, hesitated for a moment and said, “No.”

Pei Qing smiled, suddenly held up Zhan Weiyang’s face, kissed him hard, and said when he let go, “It’s good that it doesn’t.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him nervously, with his hands behind his back and scratching his fingers hard, and said, “Can I sleep with you tonight?”

Pei Qing glanced in the direction of Zhan Pengcheng’s room. Although the door was tightly closed, it was always unclear whether it would be opened from the inside at the next moment, so he said, “No, go back to sleep by yourself. Be good.”

After speaking, Pei Qing turned around and wanted to go back to the room. At this time, he felt someone grabbing his clothes. He turned around and saw Zhan Weiyang looking up at him.

Zhan Weiyang seemed to have mustered up the courage and said, “Then can I sleep for a while? I will go back later, okay?”

Pei Qing was silent for a moment and whispered to him, “You take a shower and go back to the room, I will come to you later.” After speaking, he smiled and kissed Zhan Weiyang’s face and retreated to his room.

Chapter 35 – Closed Off

Chapter 35: Closed Off

The pillow still held some warmth, but Long Ling was nowhere to be seen. At that moment, Su Muluo’s mind was nearly blank.

The despair and pain from the dream were like a cold, sticky snake coiling around him. His heart pounded uncontrollably, almost suffocating him with intense unease.

Where had his dragon gone?

Why wasn’t he by his side?

Su Muluo got up, desperate to find Long Ling. He felt like he was suffocating under the weight of his anxiety and fear.

Just then, the door to the room opened, and Long Ling appeared in the doorway. Seeing that his Phoenix was awake, he was first surprised, then quickly walked over.

“Phoenix, why did you get out of bed without shoes?”

Long Ling took in Su Muluo’s expression and furrowed his brow, realizing that his departure had made his Phoenix anxious.

He was about to soothe him with gentle words and explain where he had been when Su Muluo suddenly embraced him.

Long Ling: “……”

In the chilly night, his Phoenix was only wearing a thin garment, silently burying his soft face into his shoulder, seeking warmth.

This kind of dependence was heart-melting but also felt a bit off. Long Ling’s hand moved to stroke Phoenix’s slender back, noticing that his Phoenix was trembling slightly.

Immediately, Long Ling felt an intense pang of sympathy. He gently patted Su Muluo’s back and whispered softly in his ear, “I didn’t leave. I just went out for a bit, but I’m back now. Don’t be afraid.”

Su Muluo remained silent, keeping his face buried in Long Ling’s shoulder, unmoving. Long Ling’s embrace was wide and strong, and he could feel himself enveloped by his dragon’s presence—a very tangible warmth.

This warmth gradually eased all the restlessness and anxiety in his heart, calming his rapid heartbeat, making him feel like his soul had returned to his body, and he was alive again.

Long Ling stroked Su Muluo’s hair and whispered comforting words. After a while, he felt his Phoenix’s body relax bit by bit, and he sighed in relief.

At the same time, a question arose in his mind.

Why did his Phoenix react so strongly?

The look just now clearly showed he was too scared to speak… but what had happened to make his Phoenix so frightened?

“Phoenix,” Long Ling carried Su Muluo back to bed, pulling the soft blanket over him, “What happened? Did you have a nightmare?”

Su Muluo didn’t speak, just looked up at him with wide eyes.

His dark eyes, like gemstones submerged in cold water, were stunningly beautiful even in the night. But as he quietly looked at his dragon, there was an unspoken sense of grievance.

Long Ling fell silent, feeling that in Phoenix’s eyes, he might seem like a scoundrel who went out to seek pleasure in the dead of night, leaving his beautiful Phoenix at home, completely ignoring him. He felt both heartbroken and guilty, saying, “I won’t leave Phoenix alone again. It was my mistake this time. I promise that Phoenix will see me every time he opens his eyes from now on, okay?”

“…… It’s not your fault,” Su Muluo gently shook his head and said softly, “I just had a nightmare.”

Long Ling had an intuition that the dream wasn’t simple. He gathered Phoenix’s slender fingers in his hand and said gently, “What was the dream about?”

Su Muluo didn’t respond.

He no longer wanted to recall the contents of the nightmare or the heart-wrenching pain of losing the most important person in the dream.

Su Muluo silently snuggled into Long Ling’s chest, thought for a moment, and then transformed back.

A soft little phoenix landed on Long Ling’s chest, silent, trying to burrow into his clothes.

But because the clothes were soft and not easy to penetrate, the little phoenix got stuck halfway through, wriggling… and then stopped moving.

Long Ling: “!”

So cute!

He was overwhelmed by the cuteness!

He gently cupped the little phoenix in his hands.

The little phoenix wasn’t too pleased. Its feathers were messy and even puffed up more. It lowered its head to tidy its beautiful feathers and looked around.

Although it had lost quite a few feathers over the past days, it had also grown many new ones. And perhaps it was Long Ling’s illusion, but those new feathers seemed more beautiful and shinier than the old ones.

The dragon and the phoenix gazed at each other for a few seconds. The little phoenix chirped.

Time to sleep.

Long Ling’s eyes showed a smile. He lay down, gently placed his phoenix on the bed, and transformed back into the black dragon.

Just like before, he wrapped his phoenix in his embrace. The little phoenix curled up on him and slowly fell asleep.

The next morning, Su Muluo opened his eyes.

The hotel room was dim. He was nestled in a man’s chest, the man’s arm dr4p3d around his waist, holding him close.

Su Muluo remained silent, then looked up to meet the man’s dark golden eyes.

Long Ling smiled slightly and said, “Phoenix, good morning.”

“……”

Su Muluo looked down lazily, as if nothing had happened, and continued to doze.

Long Ling was momentarily stunned, then a wave of uncontrollable joy surged in his heart. He rubbed his face against Su Muluo’s, saying in a sticky voice, “Phoenix, aren’t you going to push me away?”

Su Muluo remained silent.

Long Ling’s long fingers buried themselves in Su Muluo’s hair, his voice deep and laced with amusement, “From now on, I’ll hug Phoenix to sleep every night. Phoenix isn’t allowed to refuse.”

Su Muluo still didn’t say anything.

Long Ling was almost overwhelmed with happiness, even wanting to spin around while holding his Phoenix. But seeing that Phoenix was still sleepy, he gently stroked his back and asked, “Phoenix, what did you dream about last night? Can you tell me?”

Su Muluo slowly lifted his gaze to glance at him, then buried his head again.

What he had dreamed about last night… was his dragon, covered in blood, lying in his arms with an uncertain fate.

The dream had been so vivid, it felt as though it had actually happened. Even now, remembering it left him with lingering fear.

Had he really lost, or nearly lost, his dragon thousands of years ago?

Was the wound on his dragon’s abdomen left from then?

Su Muluo remained silent, but his heart was tightly constricted, filled with a tearing pain.

He remembered there was a strange man beside him at that time. He didn’t know who that man was, but instinctively, he felt disgust.

Did that man hurt his dragon? Why hadn’t he been able to stop it or protect his dragon back then?

…He was truly useless.

The room was quiet. Long Ling looked down and saw his Phoenix silently clenching his fingers, the tips whitening from the force.

His gaze darkened slightly as he held Su Muluo’s hand, his knuckles pressing firmly against those slender fingers, their hands locked together.

“Alright, I won’t ask anymore,” Long Ling said softly, “Don’t think about it anymore. It’s all in the past. There’s no need for us to dwell on it.”

“I won’t leave Phoenix again, not even for a step. So just focus on me.”

Su Muluo looked up at those dark golden eyes filled with gentle affection, remained silent for a while, and softly murmured, “Mm.”

As long as his dragon was still by his side now, that was enough.

Phoenix nestled deeper into the warmth of the man’s embrace, thinking.

He would never let his dragon get hurt like that again.

……

Lin Chengcheng noticed that something seemed off about his boss and his boyfriend today.

Although they were still walking together as usual and there was no particularly unusual behavior between them… something just seemed wrong.

Lin Chengcheng was walking through the forest with a black cat, pondering this, and covertly observing the couple ahead.

He knew his boss’s boyfriend was particularly fond of clinging to his boss, never leaving his side, and his boss enjoyed the clinginess. Their relationship had always been very close.

But now, watching them still inseparable, he felt their aura seemed to have changed somehow… it seemed more subtle, more ambiguous?

It was as if nothing had changed, but everything had… making people blush just by looking.

“What’s going on?” Lin Chengcheng couldn’t help but ask the black cat, “Elder, do you know what’s up with them?”

Feng Xuan shook his head and chuckled, “Young master is still too young. You’ll understand when you grow up.”

Lin Chengcheng: “……”

That was essentially saying nothing.

Meanwhile, Su Muluo overheard Lin Chengcheng and Feng Xuan’s conversation but didn’t point it out. Instead, he glanced at Long Ling beside him.

Long Ling immediately looked hopeful and said, “Does Phoenix want a hug?”

Su Muluo replied, “I don’t need a hug from you.”

Long Ling responded with a simple “oh,” reached out to take his hand, and Su Muluo didn’t pull away, allowing him to hold it.

Long Ling then smiled with pleasure, thinking how adorable his Phoenix was today.

The fact that Phoenix allowed him to hold him while sleeping, let him change his clothes in the morning, and accepted all his affectionate gestures without refusal, made him happy.

He really liked Phoenix.

However, amid his joy, he also wondered about the dream Su Muluo had last night. His Phoenix had had fragmented dreams about the past before, and last night was probably similar.

But this time, it was likely not a good dream.

Long Ling held his Phoenix’s hand, watching his beautiful profile, lost in thought.

After a while, he would still need to ask Fenghuang about it… However, it seemed that Fenghuang hadn’t inquired about why he went out last night.

Although he wanted to give Fenghuang a surprise, if Fenghuang asked later, it was better to tell him the truth.

Half an hour later, a small house appeared among the layers of dense forest. As they rounded the house, a sprawling settlement of the Bird clan came into view.

Feng Xuan said, “We’ve arrived.”

This morning, guided by Feng Xuan, they had taken a flight to another city, transferred to a bus, and then walked for several hours through the mountains, finally arriving at the Bird clan’s territory.

The area was nestled deep in the mountains and forests, where the Bird clan had lived for a thousand years. Most of the houses were built with wood, intertwined with vines and covered by leaves, creating a simple yet warm and inviting scene.

Feng Xuan’s message had been delivered earlier, and some members of the Bird clan were already waiting at the entrance.

They first bowed respectfully to Lin Chengcheng and then turned to Su Muluo. When their gazes landed on his face, there was a clear expression of awe in their eyes.

Long Ling narrowed his eyes slightly, and the Bird clan members immediately felt a surge of fear. They quickly composed themselves and, with even greater respect, said, “Thank you, sirs, for returning our young master and elder. However, it is inconvenient to speak here. Please follow us.”

As they walked, Lin Chengcheng couldn’t help but look around in awe. This was his first time at the Bird clan’s place, and he found everything to be novel. However, he was also worried if there were any people from the Grand Elder’s faction here, so he voiced his concern.

Feng Xuan reassured him, “Don’t worry. The Bird clan has now split into two factions. The Grand Elder’s faction is several kilometers to the east, and we have several high-grade magical barriers here. Even the Grand Elder would find it difficult to get through.”

He paused and added, “The people here have come because of your father and are willing to follow you.”

Lin Chengcheng was taken aback. He hadn’t fully realized the responsibility of being the tribe leader until he heard Feng Xuan’s words. A profound feeling welled up inside him.

The Bird clan’s territory was built around Lin Chengcheng. At first glance, the entrance resembled a small village, but as one walked inside, it became clear that the full scope was impossible to grasp.

After walking a bit longer, they finally reached their destination—the highest area of the Bird clan’s buildings.

“Please wait here for a moment, sirs, and young master,” Feng Xuan said. “I need to return to my body. It might take some time.”

Su Muluo didn’t respond, but Long Ling said, “That’s fine.”

Soon, Bird clan members took Feng Xuan, who was in black cat form, away and invited Su Muluo and the others to sit, serving them with a variety of exquisite tea and snacks.

Although Lin Chengcheng had already had breakfast, the aroma of the snacks made him hungry again. He took a bite and his eyes lit up, “Delicious!”

Long Ling picked a piece of pastry and offered it to Phoenix’s mouth, “Do you want some, Phoenix?”

To avoid Lin Chengcheng hearing the word “Phoenix,” the question was asked in a lowered voice. However, even though it was addressed to Su Muluo, he seemed not to have heard it. He kept his head down and remained silent.

Long Ling frowned. He had noticed something odd about his Phoenix after entering the Bird clan’s territory.

Could it be that the Bird clan members had done something to his Phoenix?

“What’s wrong?” Long Ling asked, holding Su Muluo’s shoulder. “Phoenix, open your eyes and look at me.”

“…” Su Muluo reluctantly lifted his eyelids and mumbled, “A little sleepy…”

Long Ling’s eyes grew cold, and he immediately turned his gaze to the Bird clan members waiting nearby. His icy stare made them, who had only minor demon powers, collapse to the ground, trembling uncontrollably with fear.

Lin Chengcheng, who was chewing on a piece of pastry, froze in place. Although he wasn’t directly affected, he could sense a heavy, oppressive force in the air, leaving him momentarily immobilized and struggling to breathe.

At this moment, Su Muluo grasped Long Ling’s sleeve and weakly said, “It’s not their fault… Don’t scare them.”

He had only started feeling sleepy after arriving at the Bird clan’s territory, but it wasn’t because the people here had done something to him—it was an issue with himself.

Something here seemed to be affecting him… Could it be that Phoenix relic?

Su Muluo wanted to understand it all, but his mind was foggy, unable to think clearly. Leaning on Long Ling, he mustered his remaining consciousness and said, “I’m going to sleep… Don’t blame them.”

Long Ling fell silent, holding his Phoenix close, suppressing his demonic aura, and instructed the Bird clan members, “Prepare a room for us. No one is allowed to disturb us until we come out.”

Those few people of the bird clan nodded repeatedly as if they had narrowly escaped death. Moments later, Long Ling carried his phoenix and entered a gorgeously decorated room.

At this moment, there were only the two of them in the room. Long Ling gently placed Su Muluo on the bed, and as soon as he released his hand, a feather fell from his palm.

“…”

Silently, he picked up the feather and held Su Muluo’s hand, wanting to stay by his side. In his sleep, Su Muluo also held onto his arm and gently rubbed against it.

Then a few more feathers fell.

Long Ling paused his motion of stroking Su Muluo’s hair, shocked as he watched several feathers fall onto the bed. Soon, a few more followed.

—Su Muluo had only been asleep for a short while, waking up again after just a few hours.

He opened his eyes, still feeling drowsy, his mind a bit foggy… Then he saw countless feathers under him, while Long Ling silently tidied up beside him, trying to arrange them neatly.

As he arranged them, he even started playing a stacking game.

Su Muluo: “…”

Su Muluo quietly watched his dragon, and when Long Ling met his gaze, he felt a pang in his heart, immediately putting down the feathers and raising his hands innocently, saying, “It wasn’t me.”

Su Muluo remained silent.

“Really,” Long Ling emphasized, “these are all from the phoenix while it was sleeping. I didn’t touch any of them.”

After saying this, he saw his phoenix looking increasingly resentful. He thought for a moment and added consolingly, “But don’t worry, Phoenix, it’s not that many. I counted, only seventeen.”

Before he finished speaking, he watched helplessly as another feather fell from his phoenix.

“Ah, now it’s eighteen.”

Su Muluo: “…………”

Without a word, he pulled the blanket over his head, effectively shutting himself in.

Straight into self-isolation.

Chapter 1 – What tattoo did you get? Peppa pig?

“You have arrived at your destination. The target is on the left side of the road. Thank you for using XX Navigation.”

The mechanical female voice in the phone ended abruptly. Zhong Weishi stood on the wide overpass, looking completely bewildered.

In front of him were two escalators that had stopped running. To his left was the path he had just come up, and to his right and behind him were stairs leading both up and down.

He turned around and counted: there were a total of seven different paths branching out, extending in various directions across the road.

Was this a fvcking overpass or an octopus?

Who the hell designed this road?

Is this what people do?

At this moment, it was the rush hour, and a massive crowd surged onto the overpass like a swarm of zombies, clamouring loudly and incessantly moving.

Below him was a constant stream of traffic.

Based on the sweet navigation prompt, his options were either to retrace his steps or jump off the overpass.

It really killed a directionally challenged like him.

Zhong Weishi opened the walking navigation again, but a small line of text popped up when he searched for his destination: You are too close to the destination to use navigation oh~

… fvck.

Suppressing his frustration, Zhong Weishi closed the app and dialed Qiangzi’s number.

Qiangzi’s full name was Huangfu Qiang. He had a surname straight out of a Mary Sue romance drama, but was stuck with a first name that was only slightly better than Tiezhu, truly embodying the phrase, “wasting a good hand of cards.” 1The humor lies in the contrast between the grand, aristocratic surname “皇甫” (Huangfu) and the simple given name “强” (Qiang). The name “强” is slightly better than “铁柱” (Tiezhu, meaning “Iron Pillar”), which is used as a humorous example of a basic, unsophisticated name. This mismatch suggests that despite having a prestigious surname, the ordinary first name makes it feel like he’s wasting a good opportunity, like playing a great hand of cards poorly.

Qiangzi quickly picked up: “Ge, when are you getting here? We’re just waiting for you.”

His voice was raspy and slurred, a clear sign that he was smoking.

“I fvcking…” Zhong Weishi was too embarrassed to admit that he’d been wandering back and forth on the overpass for nearly half an hour and still hadn’t found the place. “My phone’s about to die. Come out and pick me up. I’m on an overpass that looks like an octopus.”

“Oh, just take the western path down about ten meters and you’ll be there. The shop has a small entrance. I’ll be at the door waiting for you,” Qiangzi said with a cigarette in his mouth as he leisurely headed downstairs.

West side.

If he knew where the west side was, would he have wasted his phone bill?

Zhong Weishi stood in the middle of the overpass, spinning in a circle in every direction. He didn’t spot any tattoo shops, but he did see a women’s lingerie store. The floor-to-ceiling windows were spotless, and a row of female mannequins stood at the entrance, striking seductive poses with bizarre makeup.

“I see a lingerie store, something like My Eternal Love Lolita,” Zhong Weishi said with wrinkled brows.

“What?” Qiangzi was just as confused and emphasized loudly, “The west side ah. Walk a few steps west, and you’ll find it.”

What a dog day.2It’s like saying “Seriously, this is all messed up.”

Zhong Weishi raised his voice. “I’m not a fvcking compass! How would I know where west is?!”

Huangfu Qiang never expected his Shi-ge to have such a unique level of IQ. It proved that the universe was fair—good-looking people often only had their looks going for them.

But fearing for his life, Qiangzi only dared to remind him gently, “Just look up and face the direction of the sun, and then…”

Before he could finish, the call ended abruptly with a curt “Oh.”

As Zhong Weishi retraced his steps, he cursed under his breath. Who knew he’d circled this place four or five times already and still hadn’t found that “best tattoo shop on the whole street, where people travel dozens of kilometers just to get inked” that Qiangzi had talked about.

He thought to himself, for such a renowned shop, it ought to be at least a bit bigger than a public restroom, right? But all he could see around him were small eateries and milk tea shops.

“Hey! Ge!” Qiangzi waved at him next to an electric scooter. “Over here!”

Zhong Weishi turned around, walked over, and glanced at the sign: Paris Glamour Boutique Menswear.

Inside the transparent display windows were summer collections of men’s t-shirts, pants, and… various knock-off CK underwear.

The male mannequin near the entrance was wearing cartoon underwear with a SpongeBob SquarePants pattern.

Sexy was an understatement.

At the mannequin’s feet, Zhong Weishi spotted a small black sign, roughly the size of a palm. There was crooked handwriting on it: Tattoos, eyebrow tattoos, ear cleaning, haircuts, and manicures on the 2nd floor.

… The range of business was quite comprehensive.

“Did you get yours done?” Zhong Weishi looked him up and down, noticing no change on his arms.

“Not yet. Waiting for you to do together.” Huangfu Qiang hooked an arm around his neck, leading him inside. “I just picked out a design with a lot of artistic flair. A blood-red rose. The boss says he can make it 3D.”

“What the hell?” Zhong Weishi was somewhat speechless. “Why don’t you just go all out and get it in 5D? That’d be more exciting.”

Just last night, Huangfu Qiang had suddenly called, saying he received a private job. The client was from a promising company with a clear business direction, and the job was supposedly simple. By the end of the conversation, it turned out they wanted him to collect debts.

“We’re a legitimate debt collection service, nationwide. No success, no charge. Absolute integrity.” Qiangzi had passionately declared over the phone.

“Not going!” Zhong Weishi refused without hesitation.

“Come on ah! How could we do this without you taking the lead! Out of all of us, you’re the only one who’s played a thug! You play your roles so convincingly. We need to learn from you!” Qiangzi was practically shouting with enthusiasm.

“…”

Zhong Weishi, a long-time stand-in actor on the edge of the entertainment industry, had played everything from eunuchs and palace maids to guards, corpses, thugs, and perverts—none of which lasted more than ten seconds on screen.

But anyhow, it’s also considered to have a colorful acting experience.

Playing a street thug? Not a problem at all.

But was he really the kind of guy to be motivated by money?

Debt collection was something he had only ever seen on TV.

Getting caught would mean… not getting beheaded, but definitely being dragged to the police station for questioning.

His acting career couldn’t afford such a stain!

“You can get a 3,000-yuan commission per job. I’ll split it with you half and half.”

“Deal! It’s settled, then.”

There was no crown on his head, so why should he be afraid to bow down?

Before this, Qiangzi had worked as an internet café network administrator and had never been involved in such a magically twisted side gig.

In his understanding, debt collection was all about scaring people and strength in numbers, so he roped in Zhong Weishi and a few brothers to boost morale.

The first step to playing the part of a thug, of course, was to smoke, get a perm, and get a tattoo.

Though the shop had a small entrance, it was surprisingly spacious inside. The decor was simple but stylish, exuding understated luxury. The cashier’s counter was a large solid-wood desk, and the middle-aged owner sat with his legs crossed, watching a movie. The table was equipped with an entire tea set, and a spiral redwood staircase led to the second floor.

When someone walked in, the owner reflexively looked up.

He froze for a moment.

The young man standing at the entrance was around 24 or 25, and the first impression he gave off was simply stunning.

His skin, contrasted with the person next to him, looked especially fair. His facial features were sharply defined, with soft bangs partially covering his brows and a pair of classic standard peach blossom eyes.

Normally, a face like his with those eyes should be charming and approachable. However, his slightly raised brows gave him an air of cool indifference and casual aloofness.

Even in a simple hoodie and sweatpants, his tall and lean figure was impossible to hide.

“Xiao Qiang, is this your friend ah?” The owner, who knew Huangfu Qiang, casually asked.

“Yeah, I came with him to get a tattoo.” Qiangzi grinned.

“What do you want to get?” The boss looked at Zhong Weishi, sensing that he had more guts than Huangfu Qiang. He introduced with great interest, “We have tattoo artists here who graduated from design academies. Besides the usual stuff like the Azure Dragon and White Tiger, we can design a one-of-a-kind, full-body piece for you. The latest trend is 3D mechanical tattoos—vibrant colors, with a striking, three-dimensional effect…”

The boss lifted his t-shirt to reveal his own tattoo, proudly showing it off. “How about this? Pretty visually impactful, right?”

Zhong Weishi suddenly narrowed his eyes.

—On the man’s pale belly was a large peony, symbolizing wealth and prosperity, with a peac0ck spreading its feathers across his waist.

It was definitely a strong impact.

The design was incredibly lifelike, almost identical to the “Peony of Wealth” cross-stitch hanging on display at the embroidery shop downstairs from his apartment!

Meeting the boss’s eager and expectant gaze, Zhong Weishi coldly and decisively asked, “Do you have any temporary tattoo stickers?”

Boss: “…”

Qiangzi: “…”

“Just pick a design yourself,” The boss said, pulling out a thick stack of temporary tattoo stickers from behind the counter.

Right on top was a pink Peppa Pig sticker in various poses and styles, which seemed to be quite trendy these days.

One of them even had wings and a fairy wand, looking oddly cute.

Seeing how his friend’s gaze lingered affectionately on the pigs, Qiangzi quickly pulled him aside. “I already said I’m treating you ah! Don’t worry about the money! How are you going to intimidate people when we go to collect debts later? How are you going to scare people with four or five blow dryers? Or… are you afraid of the pain?”

Zhong Weishi wanted to ask what exactly made his garish blood-red rose any better than a few pigs ah. Honestly, the whole thing was just ridiculous.

But Zhong Weishi couldn’t be bothered to dampen his enthusiasm. After all, Qiangzi had been talking about getting a full-sleeve tattoo since childhood, and it had taken him years to finally muster up the courage.

“I really don’t want a tattoo.” Zhong Weishi said seriously.

He wasn’t an idiot. He wasn’t about to mess around with Qiangzi over some sketchy side gig. Forget the 3D peonies and roses—even if it were mythical creatures like qilins or phoenixes, he had no interest.

He didn’t want to cover his body with those kinds of random things.

His body wasn’t just his alone.

Huangfu Qiang stared at him for a moment, then seemed to understand. “Alright, then just get a sticker. Pick whichever design you like, I’ll buy it for you.”

Casually, Qiangzi slipped away the Peppa Pig family pack from the top of the pile. He didn’t want his friend to become the city’s most handsome lunatic.

In the end, Zhong Weishi picked one of the Four Evil Creatures from ancient mythology: Qiongqi.

It had the head of a tiger and the body of a lion, with sharp claws and teeth, paired with wings. Its savage maw was open wide, and its entire body seemed engulfed in a sinister flame. The design stretched from his chest all the way to his arm.

It actually looked pretty cool. Combined with Zhong Weishi’s natural roguish air, it made him look every bit the part of a thug—just as long as you don’t look closer.

“Is this thing waterproof?” Zhong Weishi touched the tail of the Qiongqi tattoo on his arm. His hand came away clean, without any smudges.

Magical.

“As long as you don’t scrub it too hard, it’ll last about ten days,” The boss said.

Ten days should be enough.

It’s just a debt collection job. If they can’t do it, they could just raid the person’s house.

Not paying back what you owe? It’s against him.

“Oh, by the way,” Zhong Weishi said, pulling on his hoodie, “What’s the deal with the guy who owes the money ah? Have you done your research and visited him over the past few days?”

As a seasoned Internet café network administrator, Huangfu Qiang had a wide circle of friends across various fields. He quickly received 999+ tidbits of information when he asked in his gaming group.

“Er’Gou, full name Zhang Gou, in his late 30s. He roams all over Yucheng. Apparently, he puts on airs, looks pretty decent, and has been seeing a divorced woman named Li Yuqin. She lives in the Qingfeng Garden over in the southern district, and Er’Gou visits her often.”

Qingfeng Garden was an older complex near the city center. Over the past decade, property prices have skyrocketed; a unit of about a hundred square meters could cost around three million.

Most of the residents there were rich people.

“Does that woman have any family? Should we just wait for her at her house to block her?” Zhong Weishi thought that seemed a bit inappropriate.

“Yeah, I heard she got divorced a long time ago and lives alone. If worse comes to worst, we can just ask her directly for the money. After all, she’s the one supporting that gigolo,” Huangfu Qiang replied.

“…” So to deal with one woman, he was turning himself into the most eye-catching lunatic on the whole street.

Zhong Weishi was genuinely worried about his bro’s intelligence.

By the time Huangfu Qiang finished with that flashy 3D blood-red rose, it was already past eight in the evening.

They hadn’t even gotten the money yet, and Qiangzi had already overspent by fifteen hundred.

Zhong Weishi felt a pang of sympathy. He hadn’t expected that temporary tattoo sticker would cost a hundred!

But Qiangzi was unfazed. “Ge, look at it this way: this thing lasts for ten days, so it’s just ten yuan a day. Just skip a pack of cigarettes, and you’re good.”

“Forget it.” Zhong Weishi decided to let it go. “It’s not my money anyway.”

Qiangzi: “…”

As they bid farewell to the tattoo shop owner, he reminded them, “When you shower, don’t scrub too hard. What comes off isn’t dirt; it’s money.”

“…Got it,” Zhong Weishi replied.

The tattoo artist handed him a business card. “Welcome to come by often! I think your back would be perfect for a tattoo of the Mona Lisa’s smile. I designed it myself; it’s different from Da Vinci’s but it’s equally satisfactory.”

Zhong Weishi wanted to retort, Why don’t you just fvcking say Along the River During the Qingming Festival,3Handscroll painting by the Song dynasty painter Zhang Zeduan. wouldn’t you make more money?

But Qiangzi beat him to it. “Definitely, definitely! I’ll come by at the end of the year when I get my bonus.”

“…” A broken Internet cafe actually has a bonus?

After being distracted for a couple of seconds, Zhong Weishi realized that his focus seemed to be off.

Huangfu Qiang also handed a business card to the tattoo artist.

With a white background and bold red letters, it was eye-catching.

Xicheng Express Debt Collection Team: Construction payments, triangular debts, extramarital affair investigation collection, legal debt collection, nationwide service, no success, no fee. Welcome to call: xxx. Project Manager: Huangfu Phantom.

“Feel free to contact me. We also offer small loans—just provide a photo of your ID or a copy of your household registration. No collateral needed…” Qiangzi began to promote his new business.

Sitting on Qiangzi’s electric scooter, Zhong Weishi held his new business card between his fingers, feeling a mix of emotions. “What the hell is this Phantom? Is that the second child of your Huangfu family that accidentally strayed away back then?”

“My stage name. Doesn’t it sound more mysterious?” Qiangzi chuckled as he snatched the card from Zhong Weishi’s hand.

After dinner at a roadside stall, Qiangzi began to fret about his image again. “Ge, now that I’m getting a tattoo, should I also dye my hair? I’m thinking that trendy cool purple, with a layer of stylish gray on top. I’ve seen a bunch of students at the internet café with that color—it really suits their skin tone and makes them look lively…”

Zhong Weishi couldn’t take it anymore. “That’s because those people have fair skin that complements the color. You have an unmistakable Mongoloid race complexion. What’s the difference between making it like that and putting a potted flower on a shit?”

“…” Qiangzi endured the humiliation and quietly added a bowl of beef rice to his order. “He’ll pay later.”

Chapter 71 – Yu Wujia's Confession

Chapter 71

  ”…” Si Lan.

Si Lan glanced at Haowei beside him, lightly coughed, signaling for Haowei to turn with him, not to be impolite.

In the illusionary realm at this moment, the fox demon bowed slightly, the thin black veil slipping down to her shoulders, revealing the undulating curves of her chest.

Seeing this, Haowei tactfully turned away.

After a while, Haowei wanted to speak to Si Lan. He turned his head only to find Si Lan had turned away, standing upright but with his head slightly tilted, sneakily stealing glances at the scene in the illusionary realm.

  ”…” Haowei.

After the fox demon finished her teasing remark, Yu Wuxia remained silent, instead reaching out to lift the fox demon’s chin, leaning in close to her face.

The fox demon’s snowy white jaw rubbed against Yu Wuxia’s fingertip, warm breath brushing Yu Wuxia’s nostrils. She rolled her eyes and chuckled softly, “Little monk has quite the nose.”

With that, she gestured left and right with her hand, “Just like this thing.”

A smile tugged at the corner of Yu Wuxia’s mouth, “What thing?”

”Hmph, little monk, are you teasing me again?” The fox demon reached out and lightly tapped Yu Wuxia’s chest, then leaned sideways against Yu Wuxia’s embrace. She could feel the pure yang energy from him and estimated that taking a few breaths could greatly enhance her cultivation.

Yu Wuxia allowed her to snuggle into his embrace, his eyes shaded by shadows, looking unclearly at the fox demon.

Seeing he didn’t resist, the fox demon became bolder, lifting Yu Wuxia’s monk’s robe, her fingertip gently probing his chest.

Si Lan was mesmerized but discreetly blushed, thinking Yu Wuxia was too bold, setting aside whether breaking their vow was appropriate, how could he dare to do so in front of the statue of the Buddha of Kalpa?

Mumbling to himself, he was abruptly pushed by Haowei, jolted, and lifted his head, meeting Haowei’s cold stare. Smiling faintly, Haowei asked, “Is it beautiful?”

He hadn’t expected to be caught red-handed, awkwardly explaining, “I was just observing attentively to investigate.”

“Oh, then I want to see too.” Haowei started to turn around.

Si Lan hurriedly said, “You’re the Divine Emperor, how can you look at such filthy things?”

As he spoke, behind them, the fox demon suddenly let out a sharp cry, “Ah…”

Si Lan’s heart rang alarm bells instantly. Subconsciously, he tiptoed to cover Haowei’s eyes. But in that moment of covering his eyes, he couldn’t help stealing a glance at the scene in front of the Buddha hall himself.

Just moments ago, the affectionate two suddenly changed the situation. The fox demon was pushed away by Yu Wuxia, falling to the ground. It seemed her wrist was twisted by Yu Wuxia, and the fox demon’s tearful eyes blamed Yu Wuxia.

“Why are you, little monk, so strange?”

Clearly just moments ago they were affectionate, but when she felt the atmosphere change, she wanted to move closer to kiss Yu Wuxia. However, before touching Yu Wuxia’s lips, she was fiercely pushed away by Yu Wuxia.

Yu Wuxia’s robes and inner garments were now down to his waist, revealing his muscular back. He redressed, put on his robes again, and looked at the fox demon, his tone emotionless: “Oh? Strange?”

Unable to see Yu Wuxia’s eyes clearly, the fox demon felt as if sharp, penetrating eyes concealed in the shadows were chilling.

She didn’t understand what was wrong with the word “strange”, but now understood that she had offended not an ordinary monk but someone else. Her body suddenly transformed into black smoke, intending to escape.

But as she fled to the door, the wooden door slammed shut with a bang, and a golden barrier locked the Buddha hall.

The fox demon crashed into the barrier and fell heavily to the ground, reverting to her female form, tearfully pleading for mercy, “Little monk… venerable monk, I was wrong for trying to seduce you with my ignorance, please spare my life.”

Yu Wuxia stood up from the ground, walked to the fox demon, and a ray of moonlight fell perfectly on his face, clearly revealing the remnants of his desire and the suppressed crimson in his eyes.

“You haven’t answered my question yet. How am I strange?”

“You… you’re not strange. You’re handsome, with a strong chest. You… you’re a first-rate handsome monk.” The fox demon, frightened, blurted out words of praise.

Yu Wuxia stared at her, his eyes no longer as terrifyingly dark as before, but his voice remained calm, colder than the moonlight on the ground: “You shouldn’t beg with this face.”

“…” The fox demon paused, as if pondering the meaning of Yu Wuxia’s words.

With a bewildered expression, unsure whether to transform into a fox, she saw Yu Wuxia extend his hand towards her.

She swallowed nervously, stretched out her hand, and Yu Wuxia gently took it.

After helping her up, Yu Wuxia said nothing and sat cross-legged in front of the Buddha statue, continuing his chanting.

The fox demon, with a pale face, tried to shrink herself as small as possible, hiding in the corner.

Si Lan glanced at Yu Wuxia and then at the fox demon. He thought something might happen between the two, but he didn’t expect Yu Wuxia to close his eyes and chant in front of the Buddha hall for three days straight without incident.

The fox demon remained silent, unable to leave the barrier, crying silently in the corner.

Si Lan felt pity for the fox demon, unsure of Yu Wuxia’s intentions.

Yu Wuxia’s chanting voice was chaotic on the first day, steady on the second, and chaotic again on the third. On the fourth day, Yu Wuxia stopped chanting and stood up quietly, staring at the Buddha statue of Kalpa.

Beside him, the fox demon looked at him strangely, not understanding what was so attractive about the Buddha statue that warranted a whole day of staring.

On the fifth day, hungry and on the verge of starving to death in front of the Buddha statue, the fox demon suddenly saw Yu Wuxia leave. The barrier disappeared with him.

Yu Wuxia had only stayed in the mortal world for a few days before returning to the Thirty-Three Heavens, as if he had quickly resolved the matter of love.

But Si Lan knew that Yu Wuxia hadn’t resolved anything; instead, the desire deep in his heart had been thoroughly ignited by the fox demon.

He didn’t understand why Yu Wuxia chose to return to the Thirty-Three Heavens at this moment, a move that was tantamount to subjecting himself to agony in the flames.

Well, some things were just incomprehensible, especially when it came to Yu Wuxia, who was a bit of a madman.

Si Lan sighed with emotion, “If you don’t like it, why torture yourself like this?”

Haowei glanced at Si Lan, “You seem to take it easy.”

“Of course, after all, I’ve been married three times.”

“…” Haowei.

Haowei turned his face away with a stiff expression.

Si Lan continued, “I have a guess in my mind, but I’m not sure.”

  Haowei grunted, “What guess?”

”Could Yuxia’s weakness be the love of Immortal Jiaheng? If he knew that Immortal Jiaheng loves him too, then everything he’s done would be in vain. Those mental fortresses he’s built would crumble instantly.”

”That guess is not impossible, but there are two problems. Firstly, Immortal Jiaheng does not love Yuxia. Secondly, even if we persuade Immortal Jiaheng to pretend to love Yuxia, Yuxia’s intelligence would not easily believe it.”

”Well, that’s true,” Si Lan furrowed his brows lightly, lost in thought. “What if we break through the barrier now and go back in time to kill Yuxia?”

”If we successfully kill the past Yuxia, we wouldn’t be in this situation today,” Haowei replied calmly.

  Si Lan suddenly realized something.

”Yuxia is not an ordinary person; he is the dark side of the Heavenly Dao incarnated. Killing him in this life would only lead to Jin Wuxia or Yin Wuxia tormenting the Six Realms in the next life.”

Therefore, they only had this one chance. If they failed to stop Yuxia now, they would be trapped in endless cycles.

Si Lan nodded thoughtfully, relaxing his furrowed brows. Despite his suspicions, he dared not gamble, “Let’s take another look at the situation in the illusion.”

  ”Sure.”

Yuxia returned to the Thirty-Three Heavens. His first action was to use a red fox fur he obtained from a fox demon to create a beautiful enchantress. At midnight, the enchantress went to Senior Disciple Jiqing’s room.

Jiqing was the most favored disciple of Immortal Jiaheng.

Whatever the enchantress did, she did not leave the room all night.

The next day, Jiqing claimed illness and did not accompany Immortal Jiaheng to the sacred altar for preaching.

Yuxia volunteered to serve Immortal Jiaheng and expressed his willingness to stay by his side. Seeing Yuxia return from the mortal realm, Immortal Jiaheng appeared calmer and more stable in mind, so he agreed.

Si Lan thought to himself that aside from everything else, Yuxia was quite adept at “pursuing people.” If the target weren’t Immortal Jiaheng, he might have succumbed long ago.

After Jiqing asked for three consecutive days off, Immortal Jiaheng sensed that something was amiss.

After the sermon, Yuxia looked at Immortal Jiaheng and pretended, “Shall we go see Senior Brother Jiqing together?”

  ”Mm,” Immortal Jiaheng nodded gently.

Leading a group of disciples, Immortal Jiaheng had just arrived at Jiqing’s residence when he sensed something wrong. A strange demonic aura enveloped the front of the quiet and austere hall.

Faint laughter like silver bells came from inside.

The expressions of the disciples instantly changed upon hearing this.

Seeing the closed door, Immortal Jiaheng smashed it with a palm and strode in. At a glance, he saw Jiqing lying on the ground, pale-faced, with a strange smile on his face.

The demonic aura in the hall and the laughter of the female demon were all illusions created by Jiqing’s demonic possession.

Immortal Jiaheng hadn’t expected that his most trusted disciple would… would be deeply trapped in such a state.

Even with him present, the other party still didn’t wake up. Stretching out his hand as if embracing a beautiful woman in his arms.

Seeing this, Immortal Jiaheng’s face turned red, half with anger and half with shame, he directly slapped him. Only then did Jiqing wake up from his illusion.

Looking at Immortal Jiaheng’s angry face and the complex expressions of the fellow disciples behind him, and then at his own appearance, Jiqing instantly understood what had happened, hurriedly kneeling on the ground and begging for mercy.

”Master, please forgive… disciple… disciple…” Jiqing stammered for a long time without finishing a complete sentence, his face pale with fear.

Immortal Jiaheng slowly closed his eyes, his brow twitching slightly, suppressing his anger.

”Jiqing, you’ve violated the precepts of chastity. You no longer need to stay in the Thirty-Three Heavens. Go to the mortal world and reincarnate as a human.”

”Master…” Jiqing grabbed Immortal Jiaheng’s robe, “Please give disciple a chance.”

However, Immortal Jiaheng ignored Jiqing’s plea and directly slapped him. Jiqing’s figure instantly turned into stardust and dissipated, being sent into the cycle of reincarnation.

The disciples didn’t even have a chance to apologize to Jiqing before Immortal Jiaheng had already dealt mercilessly with him.

Immortal Jiaheng folded his hands in front of his chest, lowered his eyes, and his lips moved slightly as he recited the scriptures of salvation.

Seeing this, the disciples also closed their eyes and chanted the scriptures to save Jiqing.

Only Yuxia among the disciples kept his eyes open, staring straight at Immortal Jiaheng.

Jiqing, whom he had once loved the most, was killed with a single slap.

Faced with the violation of his most beloved disciple, could he really accept it like a ferocious beast?

  Yuxia quietly clenched his fists.

Although Jiqing was ensnared by a strand of illusion due to his shallow cultivation, it was Yuxia who tempted him into falling.

Si Lan felt that Yuxia had truly gone mad. In order to make Jiaheng understand romantic love, he didn’t hesitate to target his own senior brother.

After everyone finished chanting the scriptures in the illusion, Immortal Jiaheng instructed them to leave first.

Yuxia was about to turn and leave but was stopped by Immortal Jiaheng.

Yuxia’s expression remained unchanged as he obediently stood aside upon hearing Immortal Jiaheng’s call.

Immortal Jiaheng glanced at him, squatted down, and picked up a brown hair from the ground.

This was the same hair that Jiqing had been holding in his arms earlier.

The hair emitted a strong fox scent, left behind by a fox demon. It seemed that the enchantress who had confused Jiqing in the illusion was created from this fox hair.

Due to her shallow cultivation, the enchantress couldn’t come to the Thirty-Three Heavens herself, so someone must have “accidentally” brought this hair to the Thirty-Three Heavens.

And the only one who had been to the mortal realm recently was Yuxia.

Immortal Jiaheng handed the fox hair to Yuxia, who calmly asked, “Master, what is this?”

“Yuxia,” Immortal Jiaheng looked at him with narrowed eyes, “it’s best for you not to let me find out that you’re involved with what happened to Jiqing.”

This was the first time Immortal Jiaheng had addressed Yuxia by his full name. Yuxia feigned a look of fear on his face, but the veins on his neck twitched, revealing a sense of excitement and elation. He bent down and said, “Master, disciple is innocent. I don’t know why you would suspect me like this?”

Immortal Jiaheng glared at him, his gaze icy for a moment before he said nothing, casting a spell to turn the fox hair into powder, then turned and left.

Yuxia remained standing in place, a strange smile playing on his lips.

Watching Yuxia’s expression, Si Lan felt a chill creep into his heart. As a monk dedicated to the path of compassion and devoid of desires, being loved by someone was troublesome enough. Being loved by a yandere was even more trouble.

But on second thought, wasn’t this karmic entanglement caused by the tiger eating Yuxia’s flesh?

In this life, it seemed that Yuxia would be the one eating him.

At night, Yuxia indeed caused trouble once again.

This time, Yuxia didn’t use demonic magic to transform into a beautiful enchantress, but instead manifested a muscular, sleek black panther. He exerted a hint of aura to control the black panther, which moved like a shadow, silently passing through the palace and arriving at the door of Immortal Jiaheng’s hall.

Immortal Jiaheng was currently reciting scriptures with closed eyes, his consciousness drifting away, oblivious even as the black panther approached.

The black panther stood opposite Immortal Jiaheng, gazing at him for a long while. It then extended its tongue and slowly licked Immortal Jiaheng’s face. The barbed tongue caused a tingling sensation as it grazed his skin.

Immortal Jiaheng’s brow twitched slightly, his breath momentarily unstable. However, he seemed entranced, unable to awaken his consciousness.

In reality, it was Yu Wuxia’s spell that kept his consciousness trapped within, unable to regain clarity, though only momentarily.

Yet, it was enough time for the black panther to wreak havoc.

The panther’s tongue licked across Immortal Jiaheng’s face and effortlessly undid the bright yellow kasaya, revealing a pale yellow inner garment underneath. The damp tongue licked through the inner layer, caressing Immortal Jiaheng’s throat.

Immortal Jiaheng’s complexion changed instantly, a throbbing sensation at his brow. His consciousness struggled wildly, attempting to break free from its plight.

The black panther rubbed its head against Immortal Jiaheng’s chest before using its tongue to part his robes, exposing his chest.

Immortal Jiaheng blushed not just in anger but also embarrassment. His chest and neck turned red, though his face showed no sign of change.

Suddenly, a strange roar emanated from the panther’s throat, seemingly captivated by the “beauty” before it, its two black eyes fixed unblinkingly on Immortal Jiaheng.

Immortal Jiaheng seemed to sense the invasive gaze, his fingers curling slowly, knuckles turning white. Just as the panther lowered its head, intending to capture a certain spot on his chest, Immortal Jiaheng’s consciousness suddenly broke free from its entrapment, and his palm seized the panther by its neck.

Apparently taken aback that the culprit before him was actually a phantom of a panther, Immortal Jiaheng’s expression turned even more embarrassed. His neck reddened further, and in an instant, he tightened his fingers, turning the phantom panther into dust.

Meanwhile, Yu Wuxia suddenly spat out blood.

Having imbued a part of his essence into the phantom panther, its destruction affected him as well. He clutched his chest, about to use his techniques to heal, when suddenly, Immortal Jiaheng’s figure appeared before him.

Yu Wuxia didn’t have time to react before Immortal Jiaheng cast a spell that knocked him to the ground, causing him to cough up blood again. He lay pale-faced on the ground, looking up with an innocent expression, “Master…”

“I’m not worthy to be your master.” Immortal Jiaheng’s face had never looked so grim. His fair complexion bore faint traces of red, inexplicably tinged with a sense of desire.

“I didn’t expect you to be so disrespectful, disregarding seniority and behaving arrogantly, shamelessly!” Immortal Jiaheng was furious, each word trembling in his chest.

He couldn’t believe that just earlier that day, he had threatened Yu Wuxia, only for him to commit such a treacherous act at night! He couldn’t fathom why his disciples were becoming so troublesome.

“Master, I don’t understand what you’re saying.” Yu Wuxia continued to deny it vehemently.

Immortal Jiaheng threw the essence of the panther’s aura onto the ground before Yu Wuxia. Originally, this aura would have dissipated along with the phantom panther, but Immortal Jiaheng had preserved it through his magic.

Yu Wuxia looked down at the aura, his expression unreadable.

Immortal Jiaheng continued, “Why did you humiliate me like this?”

Yu Wuxia slowly withdrew the aura, stood up from the ground, and walked step by step toward Immortal Jiaheng. His eyes emerged gradually from the shadows, a smile playing on his lips, his gaze tender, “Because, what disciple desires in his heart is to treat his master in this way. Since my master wouldn’t consent, my desire manifested into that black panther, approaching you, doing these things on my behalf.”

Chapter 70 – Indulgence in front of the temple

Chapter 70

Yu Wuxia was busy concocting medicine, while Immortal Jiaheng distributed the medicine soup to the villagers. After ensuring everyone had taken their dose, the master and disciple finally took a short rest.

Immortal Jiaheng sat on a large rock in the forest, one hand folded across his chest, eyes closed in meditation. Moonlight outlined faint contours where his neck and back merged into one.

Yu Wuxia sat beside him, occasionally stealing glances at Immortal Jiaheng. His recitation of scriptures was intermittent and fragmented.

Before long, Immortal Jiaheng couldn’t help but open his eyes and admonish, “Wuxia, do not lose focus while reciting scriptures.”

“Yes,” Yu Wuxia obediently replied, then kept his eyes open, displaying a keen desire to learn. “Master, when I recite scriptures, I intend to do it earnestly, but my mind is often distracted by worldly matters beyond my control.”

Immortal Jiaheng asked, “What worldly matters trouble your mind?”

Yu Wuxia sighed deeply. “Earlier, when I was saving the villagers, I saw a husband give his last half of a bread bun to his wife, who then split it and gave the larger half back to him. I wondered about the nature of their love. What kind of charm allows them to sacrifice for each other like that?”

Immortal Jiaheng had never been asked about matters of love before. Disciples of the Thirty-Three Heavens were supposed to have transcended worldly affections and never asked him about such matters, much less be troubled by them.

Immortal Jiaheng’s gaze darkened as he looked at Yu Wuxia, who met his gaze calmly as if his previous words were just casual inquiries without deeper meaning.

Immortal Jiaheng withdrew his gaze, thinking he might have overthought the situation. With a stern expression, he said, “Wuxia, we disciples of the Immortal have long transcended worldly love. You should not harbor curiosity about it.”

“Master, forgive me. I was simply thinking—if one has never tasted meat, how can one claim not to like it? Similarly, if we have never experienced worldly love, how can we truly say we have transcended it?”

Immortal Jiaheng had never heard such audacious words questioning the path before. He stared sharply at Yu Wuxia. “Wuxia, your mind is not yet settled. After this charitable act, you must cultivate your mind.”

“Master,” Yu Wuxia saw his master’s displeasure and continued, “I wish to remain in the mortal realm. I can continue charitable acts here while cultivating my mind.”

Immortal Jiaheng pondered for a moment. Knowing Yu Wuxia was inherently virtuous and had never been entangled by love even after becoming a Immortal, he believed his curiosity about worldly love might stem from prolonged seclusion in the Thirty-Three Heavens.

Perhaps exposure would dispel this curiosity.

“Very well, you may stay in the mortal realm to practice.”

With that, Immortal Jiaheng closed his eyes and resumed his chanting.

Inside the barrier, Si Lan heard that Immortal Jiaheng agreed to let Yu Wuxia stay in the mortal realm for cultivation. He couldn’t help but lament. The fox demon had mentioned meeting Yu Wuxia while he was in the mortal realm. It seemed this experience marked the irreversible path Yu Wuxia had chosen.

Si Lan wanted to break the barrier, to tell Immortal Jiaheng not to leave Yu Wuxia alone in the mortal realm.

But if the barrier were broken, history would change, albeit temporarily. Ultimately, it would correct itself and lead to the current situation.

Si Lan walked slowly until he reached Immortal Jiaheng. Comparing their appearances, Immortal Jiaheng seemed younger than Yu Wuxia in terms of facial features—his eyes clear and handsome, lips full and red, exuding a gentle aura.

In mundane terms, this gentle aura carried the essence of a “virtuous wife and loving mother.”

Si Lan never expected someone as intelligent and close to demons as Yu Wuxia to appreciate such qualities.

At dawn, after seeing that the plague in the mortal realm had been resolved, Immortal Jiaheng prepared to return to the Thirty-Three Heavens. Before leaving, he instructed Yu Wuxia not to waver in his Buddhist path while practicing in the mortal realm. If he encountered matters of love, he was only to observe and understand, without violating his vows.

After speaking, Immortal Jiaheng’s expression turned slightly uncomfortable.

He had never before admonished a disciple in such matters.

Yu Wuxia replied, “Yes, Master,” bowing his head humbly. Immortal Jiaheng, seeing his disciple’s docile demeanor, felt reassured and turned to leave.

Yu Wuxia stood up and watched as Immortal Jiaheng departed. Once out of sight, his expression gradually darkened, his ink-black eyes shimmering with a faint glow, his features no longer displaying their previous docility.

He sensed several areas in the mortal realm teeming with demonic energy. Presumably, there were demons causing trouble, so he headed toward those places.

Si Lan and Haowei followed Yu Wuxia silently until they arrived at a dilapidated temple. Seeing Yu Wuxia enter, he first bowed respectfully to the central Immortal statue, then picked up a cloth and gently wiped the dust off the Immortal’s body.

Starting from the feet, he meticulously cleaned upwards. Although he couldn’t cast spells on mortals, cleaning the Immortal statue was certainly not prohibited; yet he insisted on doing it himself.

Only after he had wiped away all the dust from the Immortal’s face did Si Lan understand the reason.

The Immortal statue in this temple was Immortal Jiaheng himself. No wonder Yu Wuxia was so painstakingly thorough.

After finishing cleaning, Yu Wuxia stood before the Immortal statue, gazing intently at its features. After a long while, he sat down in meditation and silently recited Buddhist scriptures.

Si Lan felt that Yu Wuxia was now deeply entangled. When he recited scriptures, his brow was tightly furrowed, even more conflicted than when Immortal Jiaheng accompanied him yesterday.

“From the beginning, there was a mistake between Yu Wuxia and Immortal Jiaheng,” Haowei, who had been silent, suddenly spoke up.

He didn’t understand why Yu Wuxia fell in love with Immortal Jiaheng. He speculated that upon their first meeting, Yu Wuxia might have misunderstood, thinking that the person he saw during his spiritual travels across the Nine Provinces was different from who he truly was.

But in reality, that person was only deeply bound to him.

This bond encompassed not only love but also hatred.

If Yu Wuxia knew that he and Immortal Jiaheng were like the tiger and disciple in Buddhist texts, perhaps this distorted affection would never have arisen.

“Ah, now I only hope to discover Yu Wuxia’s weakness and prevent him from causing the apocalypse,” Si Lan sighed.

For Yu Wuxia, perhaps what he hated wasn’t the moral norms of this world. If these norms restricted him and Immortal Jiaheng, then in their next lives, they could reincarnate without blood or societal ties and continue their fated relationship.

But Yu Wuxia knew that no matter how many times he reincarnated, they would never continue their fate because Immortal Jiaheng didn’t love him. So, what he hated should be Immortal Jiaheng’s lack of love.

Thinking of this, Si Lan seemed to understand something. Immortal Jiaheng’s lack of love formed an impenetrable barrier in Yu Wuxia’s heart. But what if Immortal Jiaheng did love him?

As he pondered this, the scene before him changed.

A wisp of black smoke drifted in from the door and attached itself behind Yu Wuxia, transforming into a graceful woman. Her figure was slender and charming, her demeanor coquettish. Her black nails lightly touched Yu Wuxia’s face, gliding slowly.

“What a handsome little monk you are…”

This woman was the fox demon that Si Lan and Haowei had rescued from Linglong Mountain.

As the fox demon’s hand slid down, passing over Yu Wuxia’s slightly protruding Adam’s apple and then his collarbone, she giggled softly, intending to continue downwards. Suddenly, Yu Wuxia opened his eyes and grabbed the fox demon’s neck.

The fox demon stared in fear, “How… how weren’t you enchanted?”

She had originally released some bewitching black smoke, assuming Yu Wuxia had already been mesmerized.

Yu Wuxia was about to crush the fox demon’s neck with his hand. Just then, a ray of moonlight shone through a cracked window, illuminating the fox demon’s face.

The fox demon had delicate and exquisite features, almond eyes filled with affection, somewhat resembling Immortal Jiaheng.

The strength in Yu Wuxia’s hand gradually weakened, and he released the fox demon, silently staring at her eyes and brows.

The fox demon, relieved and regaining her composure, saw that there was no hostility from him. She smiled coyly and delicately leaned into Yu Wuxia’s embrace.

“Little monk, are you here to beg for alms down the mountain? It’s so desolate here, with nothing good to eat.”

Seeing no response from him, the fox demon became bold, teasingly touching the back of Yu Wuxia’s hand with her fingertips, then gently stroking his palm.

After a few strokes, the fox demon realized that he remained unmoved, gazing at her with eyes as clear and unfeeling as glass, his breath steady, showing no signs of being affected.

Feeling frustrated, the fox demon plucked up her courage and let her palm run along Yu Wuxia’s abdomen, moving downwards.

Not knowing what she touched, the fox demon’s eyes flickered, “Little monk, you are quite honest here.”

Chapter 22 – I was proposed to. (Not really)

Chapter 22 – I was proposed to. (Not really)

The young man in front was dressed entirely in white. Without a headpiece, his black hair fell over his chest, his eyebrows were like distant mountains, and his eyes resembled peach blossoms—he was exceptionally handsome and charming. Beside him stood a fairy-like young lady, holding a cushion and slowly swaying it.

Zhao Qi opened his mouth to speak but then remembered he was dressed as a woman. Speaking now would likely reveal his identity, so he closed his mouth again.

The young man looked at him and said, “Hmm? Why aren’t you speaking?”

Because if I open my mouth, you might be scared to death.

“Jiuniang, do you recognize her?”

The woman beside the young man straightened up and looked Zhao Qi up and down. “This girl looks unfamiliar. Could she be a newcomer?”

The young man smiled, “Yes, she is to my liking.”

Zhao Qi: “…” Don’t like me. I’m emotionless, and I’m bigger than you.

The woman seemed a bit discontented. “The young master specifically asked for my company these past few days, so my mother wouldn’t send someone else. This person probably knows the young master is generous and came here to offer herself.”

Zhao Qi: “…” I’m not, I don’t have, stop saying nonsense.

“Very good,” the young man said with a hint of drunkenness, “I am missing someone like her by my side.”

The woman linked her arm with the young man’s. “Then does the young master no longer need Jiuniang?”

The young man looked down at her and wrapped his arm around her slender waist. “I want both you and her.”

This is acceptable. Only children make choices. Adults naturally want everything.

“What’s your name?” the young man asked.

Zhao Qi hesitated for a moment and shook his head.

“Could it be that you can’t speak?”

Playing mute is an option. Zhao Qi nodded.

The woman covered her mouth with the cushion and chuckled, “Where did this mute come from, daring to serve Young Master Li?”

“Interesting,” the young man said with interest. “Come here, darling, pour me a drink.”

Zhao Qi glared at him. Even Xiao Shiqing hasn’t drunk the wine I poured. Who does this person think he is?

And calling me darling? Do I know you? Flirt, lecherous scoundrel, that’s who you are!

Seeing Zhao Qi’s lack of response, the young man raised his eyebrow and was about to speak when a knock on the door interrupted him.

“Master,” a melodious female voice said, “There is a Mr. Fang, who claims to be the Capital’s commander, requests an audience.”

The young man said, “Let him in.”

Zhao Qi’s heart skipped a beat. He took small steps to the young man’s side, poured a drink into a cup, and handed it to him.

The young man smiled but did not take the cup. Instead, he leaned down and took a sip directly from Zhao Qi’s hand. When he looked up, his gaze fell on Zhao Qi’s red lips, and a trace of surprise flashed in his eyes. “The scent on you…”

Before he could finish, the door to the room opened. The man with the bushy beard who had just taken Zhao Qi away entered and bowed to the young man. “Your Highness, I apologize for the disturbance.”

Zhao Qi’s eyes widened—Your Highness, this person is a prince? Which prince? He just heard the young lady call him “Young Master Li.” There is only one prince in Dajing who doesn’t have the surname Zhao.

What kind of luck is this? To run into an important character while visiting a brothel. But how did Li Chisu come to the capital without him knowing? Other princes and nobles who come to the capital from their fiefs usually go to the palace to pay their respects to him and Empress Wen. Yet, Li Chisu came directly to the pleasure quarters.

Li Chisu smiled. “A guest is a guest. This prince invites Mr. Fang to a drink?”

Mr. Fang said, “I have official duties and cannot drink.”

Li Chisu did not say more. He picked up a small jug of unopened wine, weighed it in his hand, and threw it forward.

Mr. Fang instinctively caught the jug, hesitating. “This…”

“It’s just a jug of fine wine. Mr. Fang, please take it.”

Mr. Fang could only say, “Thank you, Your Highness.”

Li Chisu changed his posture and lazily lay down on Zhao Qi’s lap. “Mr. Fang, what’s the official business that caused such a commotion? Tell this prince about it.”

Zhao Qi froze. Li Chisu’s long hair was dr4p3d over his hand, and if he looked down, he would see those affectionate peach blossom eyes.

He took a deep breath and comforted himself: We’re both men, it’s just a lap, it’s not going to make a difference, stay calm.

Li Chisu looked up at Zhao Qi’s slightly trembling long lashes and laughed softly. “What kind of incense are you using? This scent is something I’ve never encountered before.” He then playfully toyed with Zhao Qi’s hair.

Zhao Qi remembered that He Changzhou had also mentioned a special scent on him—dragon’s saliva. In all of Dajing, only he used dragon’s saliva. If Li Chisu had smelled it before, that would be strange.

Li Chisu flirted with the courtesan without any sense of propriety. Mr. Fang looked somewhat uncomfortable, especially since the woman in a bright red dress, with her bright eyes and red lips, though heavily made-up, did not seem vulgar at all. Instead, she looked like an innocent, blooming peony, drawing people’s gaze.

Li Chisu had a perceptive heart; no one’s actions escaped his notice. He smiled and asked Mr. Fang, “Is she beautiful?”

Mr. Fang averted his gaze. “I dare not say.”

“What’s there to be afraid of? Everyone likes to look at beauties.” Li Chisu pinched Zhao Qi’s chin. “This prince also likes to look.”

Mr. Fang said, “This girl looks familiar. Is she the one who was in Zhao Gongzi’s room earlier?”

Zhao Qi was horrified. How could this happen? Even dressed as a woman, he could be recognized?!

“Zhao Gongzi just left, and the girl came here to Your Highness. Truly, she is busier than we officials.”

Li Chisu seemed unbothered. “Those who are capable work harder.”

… Damn, who’s capable here?

Zhao Qi was fuming internally but couldn’t speak, ready to explode on the spot.

Fortunately, Mr. Fang remembered his official duty. “Your Highness, I am here on the Prime Minister’s orders to capture the remnants of Broken Pulse Gang hidden in Spring Breeze Pavilion.”

Zhao Qi’s chest tightened. So these people aren’t here to capture him? Then why is he dressed like this? This is cruel!

Li Chisu said, “Do you think the remnants of Broken Pulse Gang would be hiding here with this prince?”

“I dare not assume so, but the Prime Minister said not to overlook any clues.” Mr. Fang took out a portrait. “May I ask if Your Highness has seen the person in this portrait?”

Li Chisu glanced at it and said, “This person is unremarkable. Even if this prince had seen him, he would have forgotten.”

Jiuniang said coquettishly, “Your Highness probably only remembers the faces of beauties.”

Li Chisu raised his wine cup, signaling her to pour more. “Clever.”

“Since Your Highness hasn’t seen this person, I won’t disturb Your Highness from drinking.” Mr. Fang cupped his hands. “Goodbye.”

After Mr. Fang left, Jiuniang complained, “What a dampener—should Jiuniang accompany Your Highness for another drink?”

Li Chisu swirled his wine cup. “If we drink more, I’ll get drunk.”

Jiuniang giggled. “It’s better if Your Highness gets drunk.”

Zhao Qi couldn’t take it anymore. He patted Li Chisu’s shoulder, signaling him to move his head.

Li Chisu either genuinely didn’t understand or was pretending to be clueless. He asked, “What’s wrong, darling?”

Zhao Qi frowned and shook his head.

Li Chisu reached out to him, opening his palm. “Can you write?”

He could write, but his handwriting was so poor that Li Chisu might not recognize it.

“If you want to tell this prince something, write it down.”

Zhao Qi thought for a moment and used his finger to write on Li Chisu’s hand—

【Make way.】

Li Chisu raised an eyebrow.

【I’m leaving, goodbye.】

Li Chisu chuckled softly, sat up, and freed Zhao Qi’s legs.

Zhao Qi rubbed his aching thighs, stood up to leave, but was stopped when Li Chisu grabbed the hem of his skirt. Zhao Qi tugged at the skirt and looked at Li Chisu with a puzzled expression.

Li Chisu reached out again. “What’s your name, young lady?”

Zhao Qi shook his head expressionlessly.

“Not going to tell me?”

He nodded.

“Why?”

As Zhao Qi was pondering how to make his exit, there was another commotion outside the door, and it was a voice he was very familiar with.

“Isn’t your master Prince Zhao Nan? He is a prince, and my father is also a prince, and the emperor’s own uncle! Get out of the way quickly, or if you delay me finding someone, you’ll lose a hundred heads for it!”

Zhao Qi was overjoyed to hear Zhao Qiao’s voice sounding so happy for the first time, as if he had been granted a pardon.

Li Chisu seemed displeased, “Who is it again?”

A young girl’s voice came through, “Master, it’s a young man who claims to be named Zhao.”

“Zhao…” Li Chisu frowned but quickly relaxed, “Let him in.”

As the door opened, Zhao Qiao rolled in and, upon seeing Zhao Qi, almost burst into tears, “Your Majesty—”

Zhao Qi quickly gave him a ‘shut up’ look. Zhao Qiao choked up and changed his tone, “Heaven bless, I finally found you!”

Li Chisu and Jiu Niang exchanged glances and asked, “And you are…?”

Zhao Qiao wiped his sweat and puffed out his chest, “I am the most beloved cousin of the current Emperor, Zhao Qiao.”

Zhao Qi’s eyelids twitched. Brother, could you please have some dignity?

Li Chisu smiled, “My late father and my great-grandfather were sworn brothers, so if we go by that, Mr. Zhao and the Emperor should both call me… Uncle?”

Zhao Qiao stared blankly for a long moment before realizing, “Stop trying to associate yourself with the Emperor. The Emperor has no uncle named Li, and neither do I! Wait, what is that you’re holding, a skirt?” Zhao Qiao screamed, “You actually—” He almost fainted from the shock.

Li Chisu glanced at the skirt in his hand and then at Zhao Qi, “Do you know this young lady?”

Jiu Niang said, “Could it be that Mr. Zhao is a benefactor to this little mute?”

Zhao Qi was numb to these harsh words, feeling no inner turmoil, even finding it a bit amusing. Zhao Qiao, frantic, stomped his feet and growled, “What nonsense are you talking about? Watch out or I’ll tear your mouth apart!”

Jiu Niang, frightened, hid in Li Chisu’s embrace, who comforted her by patting her shoulder. Zhao Qi took the chance to pull out the skirt and, with a few quick steps, moved to Zhao Qiao’s side, the golden tassels on his head swaying and making crisp sounds. He gestured towards the door, signaling Zhao Qiao: Time to retreat.

Unfortunately, Zhao Qiao’s brain wasn’t working too well, and he didn’t catch Zhao Qi’s hint. He grabbed Zhao Qi’s hand, both crying and laughing, “When I returned to the private room, Ru Yan and Ru Meng said you were gone. I searched everywhere and couldn’t find a trace of you, it scared me to death. Then, it was that Mr. Fang who told me you were here with Prince Zhao Nan…”

Li Chisu chuckled, “Mr. Zhao is so devoted to a courtesan. You really are a man of deep feelings.”

Zhao Qiao was caught off guard, “What courtesan? Have you ever seen a courtesan who looks like this?”

Li Chisu feigned surprise, “So this young lady is Mr. Zhao’s… wife?”

Zhao Qi felt chills all over, and with a snap, he shook off Zhao Qiao’s hand—no orthopedic drama, starting with me.

Zhao Qiao shook his head vigorously, “No, no, no, she is my, uh, sister.”

Li Chisu realized, “So she is a princess. I apologize for my earlier behavior. I must apologize to the princess here.”

Zhao Qi waved his hand. He had no time to argue with Li Chisu. He just wanted to leave this wretched place as soon as possible and then nail the words “Spring Breeze Pavilion” to his own disgrace pole.

“The princess has such grace. However, I still want to know the princess’s name, or at least tell me your family’s order.”

Zhao Qiao asked suspiciously, “Why?”

Li Chisu smiled with narrowed eyes, “So that I can seek the princess as a wife someday.”

Upon hearing this, Zhao Qi and Zhao Qiao exchanged shocked glances, seeing the same astonishment reflected in each other’s eyes. Not only they, but even Jiu Niang was stunned.

Zhao Qiao thought he must have misheard, rubbing his ears, “What did you just say? Say it again?”

Li Chisu, half-seriously, said, “I mistook the princess for a courtesan. Earlier, I was hugging her, feeding her wine, and pulling at her skirt. It’s likely that the princess’s purity has been…”

“Hugging? Feeding wine? Pulling at her skirt?” Zhao Qiao’s voice grew louder with each word. He looked at Zhao Qi, trembling slightly, “Your Majesty… Sister, is what he said true?”

Zhao Qi’s face turned red with embarrassment. He wished he could grab his own hair and throw himself off the building.

Li Chisu continued, “But please rest assured, the princess. I will definitely take responsibility.”

Zhao Qi was on the verge of tears, shaking his head wildly, and even knocked off the golden tassels on his head.

Li Chisu gently said, “I am still unmarried. Even though the princess cannot speak, once she comes to me, she will be the one and only princess consort. I will not let the princess suffer any grievances.”

“No—” Zhao Qiao said hysterically, “My sister is not someone you can just marry off as you please! Not to mention that marriage is something determined by the parents. I don’t agree with this marriage!”

Li Chisu pondered for a moment, “Perhaps, we should go to Japan and have King Jin request the Emperor to grant the marriage?”

Zhao Qiao’s mouth dropped open in shock, “… Huh?”

Zhao Qi, unable to tolerate it any longer, covered his face and ran out. Zhao Qiao hurried after him, “Sister, wait for me! I’m only wearing one shoe!”

Li Chisu bent down to pick up the golden hairpin from the floor, seeming to be deep in thought. Jiu Niang approached from behind, “Now that everyone’s gone, how about I sing a song for the prince?”

“Go down first.”

“Prince…” Jiu Niang called out unwillingly. Li Chisu chuckled softly, “Be good, go on. I’ll listen to you sing later.”

Jiu Niang reluctantly left, looking back several times. A young girl in white with a long sword, elegant in appearance, walked in. She handed Li Chisu a jade fan and said helplessly, “Master, you’ve stirred up trouble again. Be careful not to provoke some tigress that might make it impossible for you to even return to Nanzhou.”

Li Chisu looked innocent, “I really didn’t do it on purpose this time. I didn’t expect the Music Bureau would have such virtuous young women.”

The girl had been standing at the door and heard their conversation clearly. She looked puzzled, “When did the Ninth Prince have a mute daughter?”

Li Chisu shook his head, “I don’t know. She is probably an unfavored illegitimate daughter. Xiaoyu, look into this matter. If the Ninth Prince really has such a daughter…”

Xiao Yu glanced at him sideways and said, “So what if it’s true, Master? You don’t actually want to marry her as your princess, do you?”

Li Chisu nodded, “Yes.”

Xiao Yu grew anxious. “Prince, there are so many young ladies to choose from. Why would you insist on marrying a mute? And the girls in the capital are all pampered and delicate, unable to take care of themselves. How can they compare to the girls from our Southern Province?”

Li Chisu lightly tapped her forehead with his jade fan. “Your prince is approaching his thirties, and the position of princess has been vacant for a long time. I’m not in a hurry, but someone else is.”

Xiao Yu, who had been raised by Li Chisu and was very clever, asked, “Are you talking about… the Empress Dowager?”

Li Chisu’s eyes showed approval as he said, “The Empress Dowager and Xiao Shiqing have always been wary of me. Last time, in the memorial I sent to the palace, the Empress Dowager hinted that she wanted to marry the Emperor’s younger sister, Princess Jiayan, to me, to restrain me and the three southwestern provinces.”

Xiao Yu understood. “So, Master wants to use today’s incident to refuse this marriage proposal?”

“Mm, the Ninth Prince has no power or influence, just a idle prince. Having him as my father-in-law and marrying a mute princess will save a lot of trouble in the future.” Li Chisu smiled and said, “When the time comes to meet the Emperor, I’ll just say I inadvertently offended the Ninth Prince’s daughter, and to preserve the princess’s honor, I have no choice but to marry her. This reason is so lofty that even the Empress Dowager won’t refuse.”

“But, Master, won’t you feel wronged?” Xiao Yu asked. “That is your princess, your legitimate wife. Haven’t you always told me you wanted to find someone you truly like as your spouse?”

“Fool, I am different from you. In a noble family, marriage is not entirely within one’s control. Even the Emperor cannot choose only what he likes for the empress. A mere princess is nothing significant.”

Xiao Yu teased, “Oh, come on. I think Master is really interested in her and came up with this plan as a way to go with the flow.”

Li Chisu neither confirmed nor denied it. He looked at the gold hairpin in his hand, chuckled softly, and said, “What a splendid flower of wealth and honor.”

As soon as Zhao Qi left Spring Breeze Pavilion, he let out a long howl, “Ahhhh, I can finally speak! I want to talk for three days and nights!”

Zhao Qiao fell to his knees with a thud, “Your Majesty, I am guilty! Please, Your Majesty, punish me lightly!”

Zhao Qi vented his frustration, but still felt uneasy. Seeing Zhao Qiao’s blackened white socks, he was both angry and amused. “You are indeed guilty. Let me think, what should be your punishment? How about castration?”

Zhao Qiao was terrified and knocked his head repeatedly, “Your Majesty, have mercy! By heaven and earth, I only wanted to bring some joy to Your Majesty, I really didn’t expect so many issues tonight. Your Majesty, am I still your most beloved brother?”

Zhao Qi was cold and unfeeling. “No, go away.”

“Wuwuwu, Your Majesty, my feelings for you are as unchanging as the rivers and streams…”

Zhao Qi frowned. “Why does that line sound so familiar?”

Zhao Qiao sniffled. “Your Majesty?”

“What’s the next line after ‘Strange changes, yet the ordinary does not change’?”

Zhao Qiao was confused. “Huh?”

“It’s nothing,” Zhao Qi said, “Just keep wailing, I must have thought too much.”

“Wuwuwu…”

After Zhao Qiao cried for a while, Zhao Qi finally said, “That’s enough. It’s so late, do you want to disturb the people?”

Zhao Qiao hiccupped. “Then, Your Majesty, are we still going to do the castration?”

“No castration,” Zhao Qi pulled Zhao Qiao up. “Let’s return to the palace first. I need to attend court early tomorrow morning.”

Zhao Qiao complained, “Your Majesty, you scared me to death— but, do you want to change your clothes before we go back?”

“That’s obvious—”

“Change what? If you like wearing them, wear them enough.”

A familiar voice suddenly sounded from behind. Zhao Qi and Zhao Qiao exchanged glances again, this time seeing Zhao Shi’s fear.

Zhao Qiao asked, “Your Majesty, should we turn around?”

Zhao Qi gritted his teeth. “As long as we run fast enough, he won’t catch us!”

No sooner had he spoken, two men in black appeared out of nowhere, landing right in front of them, kneeling and saluting, “Greetings, Your Majesty!”

Zhao Qiao said, “Your Majesty, it seems we can’t run.”

“Mm…” Zhao Qi’s expression grew serious. “It seems we have only one option left.”

“What?”

Zhao Qi suddenly turned around, his tone sincere, “Brother Prime Minister, I was wrong!”

Xiao Shiqing’s eyes were somber as he fixed his gaze on Zhao Qi. After a while, he said, “Your Majesty, please get in the carriage. I will take you home.”

Zhao Qi was “invited” away by Xiao Shiqing, leaving Zhao Qiao, who was left behind with only one shoe, wondering, “What should I do?”

Zhao Qi sat in the carriage while Xiao Shiqing sat opposite him, never taking his eyes off him. Zhao Qi felt uncomfortable under his gaze and opened the carriage window to get some fresh air.

Xiao Shiqing spoke the first words after getting in the carriage, “What’s the matter?”

Zhao Qi said, “I’m feeling a bit stuffy.”

Xiao Shiqing, with a hint of a smile, asked, “Why weren’t you stuffy in Spring Breeze Pavilion?”

Zhao Qi thought seriously before answering, “Maybe because the carriage is a bit cramped?”

Xiao Shiqing gave him a cold look. Zhao Qi promptly pretended nothing had happened and turned to look out the window.

Xiao Shiqing asked, “Where did your clothes come from?”

“Miss Ru Meng gave them to me.”

Hearing “Ru Meng,” Xiao Shiqing’s expression darkened. “It seems the beauties left in the harem cannot satisfy the Emperor, so the Emperor had to look for flowers and willows outside the palace.”

Zhao Qi swore, “I only had a bite to eat and listened to a few songs in Spring Breeze Pavilion. I didn’t do anything else, not even touched Ru Meng’s hand!”

Xiao Shiqing smiled. “Oh, and there’s another one named Ru Yan.”

Zhao Qi stood up, moved to sit beside Xiao Shiqing, and said softly, “Others may not know me, but don’t you, Brother Prime Minister?”

Xiao Shiqing looked up at him. “Know what?”

Zhao Qi blushed and said, “I was previously ill and did not touch any of the harem beauties. After recovering, I promised my mother to cultivate myself before selecting a consort. So, my body is still pure and untainted.”

“…Got it.”

“Then, are you not angry anymore, Prime Minister Brother?”

Xiao Shiqing’s expression did look a bit better. “Tell me everything that happened tonight,” his gaze fell on Zhao Qi’s red lips, “including why you’re dressed like this.”

Zhao Qi recounted what needed to be said, of course omitting the reason he dressed as a woman thinking Xiao Shiqing was here to arrest him, as well as Li Chisu’s proposal. “But, how did you know I was at Spring Breeze Pavilion?”

Xiao Shiqing replied calmly, “Do you think you’re the only one with spies around?”

“…Fine then.”

“However, I didn’t expect you to meet King Zhaonan at Spring Breeze Pavilion—what did you two talk about?”

Zhao Qi felt a bit guilty. “Nothing much. Prime Minister Brother, since Li Chisu has been in the capital for a while, why hasn’t he come to the palace to see me?”

Xiao Shiqing, wanting to teach him about strategy, asked, “What do you think?”

“To make us believe he’s a frivolous person unfit for important duties?”

“Possible.”

Zhao Qi thought for a moment. “But from his perspective, we don’t know he’s in the capital. So, who is he putting on an act for?”

Xiao Shiqing said, “He might think that even if I know, he knows I know.”

Zhao Qi: ??? No more riddles, please.

Soon, the carriage stopped, and the coachman said, “Prime Minister, we’ve arrived.”

Xiao Shiqing looked at the drowsy Zhao Qi and asked, “Are you tired?”

Zhao Qi rubbed his eyes. “A bit.”

Xiao Shiqing got out of the carriage first, took a cloak from a servant, dr4p3d it over Zhao Qi, and then carried him out in a princess carry.

As a man being carried by another man, Zhao Qi couldn’t help but feel a bit resistant. “I can walk myself.”

Xiao Shiqing coldly said, “Are you sure you want others to see you like this?”

“No.”

“Then keep your head down.”

As Zhao Qi buried his head against Xiao Shiqing’s chest, he suddenly thought he could have just covered his face!

At that moment, he heard a completely unfamiliar voice: “The Prime Minister has returned to the residence—”

Zhao Qi’s body tensed—returned to the residence? What residence?! Weren’t they going back to the palace?!

Chapter 51

Zhan Weiyang looked in Pei Qing’s direction and was about to run over when he suddenly heard Xie Ling calling his name again, “Zhan Weiyang.”

He stopped and looked at Xie Ling in confusion.

       Xie Ling said, “My bicycle—”

“Zhan Weiyang!” At this time, Zhan Weiyang heard Pei Qing calling him again.

Pei Qing put one arm on the edge of the car window, looking outside, and called his name in a tone he had never used before, which sounded a little cold and hard.

Zhan Weiyang was frightened, and he quickly turned around and ran towards Pei Qing.

Chen Youyou saw Zhan Weiyang leaving and hurriedly followed him. He walked behind Zhan Weiyang and saw Zhan Weiyang open the passenger door and sit in. After hesitating, he sat in the back seat himself.

After Zhan Weiyang got in the car, he still looked at Pei Qing with fear and trepidation, not knowing what he had done wrong.

Pei Qing’s tone softened, and he said to Zhan Weiyang, “Fasten your seat belt.”

Zhan Weiyang didn’t come back to his senses, Pei Qing unbuckled his own seat belt, leaned over, and helped Zhan Weiyang fasten his seat belt. He then turned around and said to Chen Youyou, “Youyou, we’ll take you home first.”

Actually, Chen Youyou was also a little stunned, mainly because he saw Zhan Weiyang in a panic and didn’t know what had happened. At this time, he heard Pei Qing talking to him and hurriedly responded, “Oh, okay.”

Pei Qing had driven to Chen Youyou’s house once, but after all, it was not a familiar place. Now that it was already dark, he took out his mobile phone, turned on the navigation, and drove all the way.

No one in the car spoke, and only the emotionless, cold female voice in the mobile phone navigation could be heard from time to time.

After sending Chen Youyou all the way to the gate of the neighbourhood, Pei Qing parked the car on the side of the road.

When Chen Youyou got out of the car, he took off his coat and gave it back to Pei Qing, standing on the side of the road and politely thanked him, “Thank you, older cousin.”

Pei Qing said to him, “Go back quickly, don’t catch a cold.”

Chen Youyou nodded, waved to Zhan Weiyang, and ran into the neighbourhood.

Then Pei Qing picked up his phone and reset the destination in the navigation.

Zhan Weiyang was still somewhat at a loss for words as he looked at him.

Pei Qing set the destination but did not start the car immediately. Instead, he turned to look at Zhan Weiyang and asked, “Is Yangyang hungry?”

Zhan Weiyang shook his head blankly.

Pei Qing asked him again, “Is it still cold?”

Zhan Weiyang continued to shake his head.

Pei Qing seemed to have noticed Zhan Weiyang’s mood, and he reached out and touched Zhan Weiyang’s head.

Zhan Weiyang rubbed his warm palm obediently and asked carefully, “Did I make you angry just now?”

       Pei Qing said, “No.”

Zhan Weiyang did not breathe a sigh of relief, and he insisted, “You are angry. Your tone was so fierce when you called my name.”

Pei Qing asked him gently, “Was it fierce?”

Zhan Weiyang nodded with a little grievance.

       Pei Qing said, “I’m sorry.”

Zhan Weiyang said, “I’m not angry with you.”

Pei Qing couldn’t help laughing when he heard it and said to Zhan Weiyang, “Actually, I wasn’t angry with you, I just wanted to shout at you to come back soon.”

Zhan Weiyang looked at him. Pei Qing said, “Did you hear me calling you to get in the car?”

Zhan Weiyang replied, “I heard it.”

Pei Qing nodded, “So I called you to get in the car, and you didn’t come. I was afraid that you would run away with others, and I am anxious.”

Zhan Weiyang said hurriedly, “I won’t run away with others.”

Pei Qing still had a faint smile in his eyes, and he asked, “Really?”

Zhan Weiyang nodded sincerely, “Yes, I will only follow you, don’t be mean to me.”

Pei Qing leaned back in the chair and thought carefully about his tone just now. In fact, he couldn’t say that he was mean. He just wanted to call back Zhan Weiyang’s attention, so his voice was a little loud and his tone seemed hurried. The most important thing was that he called Zhan Weiyang’s full name.

He knew why Zhan Weiyang was confused because even when he had just arrived at the Zhan family, and the two met for the first time, he was very polite and called him ‘Weiyang’ instead of ‘Zhan Weiyang’.

It was just that he didn’t expect Zhan Weiyang to be so nervous.

He then said again, “I’m sorry, I won’t be mean to you anymore, okay?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Okay.”

As Pei Qing drove back, the sky, which had been gloomy all night, began to drizzle again. He turned on the wipers, slowed down and drove home slowly. When passing the brightly lit streets on the way, he asked Zhan Weiyang if he wanted to have a midnight snack.

Zhan Weiyang said, “No, I want to sleep.”

When Pei Qing parked the car as they got home, he found that the car that Zhan Pengcheng usually drove out was already parked in the garage. Zhan Pengcheng had come back early today, which was rare.

Pei Qing and Zhan Weiyang entered the house and saw Zhan Pengcheng standing in the living room on the first floor, holding a cup and drinking water. When he saw them coming back, he put down the cup in a hurry and asked, “Did Yangyang get wet in the rain?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “No.”

Pei Qing continued, “I saw that the temperature had dropped, so I drove to pick him up and brought him a coat.”

Zhan Pengcheng said, “Oh,” and said, “Thank you so much, xiao Qing.”

Pei Qing said, “No problem, Uncle.”

Zhan Pengcheng said to Zhan Weiyang, “Then go upstairs and take a shower and go to bed.”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded, “Okay.”

After taking a shower, Zhan Weiyang sat on the bed in his room, thinking about what he had said to Chen Youyou in the afternoon and seriously struggling with whether he really had to wait until he was 18 to be able to do anything.

His toes were red from the hot water, and he stepped on the bed, opening and closing them forcefully. He thought for a moment, reached out to pick up his pyjamas, and looked at his thin chest. His skin was still white, and it was slightly red after taking a hot bath. He stood up on the bed and tried to take off his pants, but before he could do so, he heard a knock on the door.

It must be Zhan Pengcheng at this time.

Zhan Weiyang quickly pulled up his pants, sat cross-legged on the bed, and said, “Come in.”

Zhan Pengcheng opened the door and came in, asking, “Yangyang is still awake?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Yes.”

Usually, Zhan Pengcheng would stand for a while before leaving. Today, he walked to the bed and sat down, asking Zhan Weiyang, “Does Pei Qing gege take good care of you?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Yes.”

Zhan Pengcheng thought for a while and said, “Then Daddy will treat him to a meal some other day. I am usually busy with work, and I feel that I have troubled him a lot.”

       Zhan Weiyang nodded, “Okay.”

Zhan Pengcheng asked him, “Do you get along well with Pei Qing gege?”

       Zhan Weiyang said, “Yes.”

Zhan Pengcheng raised his hand, patted his head, and said with relief, “It’s must be because my Yangyang is so well-behaved. Everyone likes you.”

Zhan Weiyang thought for a while and said, “Zhan Weiguang doesn’t like me.”

“How dare he dislike you!” Zhan Pengcheng deliberately pretended to be mad, “Dad will spank him!”

       Zhan Weiyang smiled.

Zhan Pengcheng said, “Okay, go to bed, Dad is going to bed too.”

Zhan Weiyang waved to him, “Good night, Dad.”

When Zhan Pengcheng left the room, Zhan Weiyang sat cross-legged on the bed quietly for a few minutes, climbed down from the bed, and walked outside in slippers.

The lights in the corridor were turned off, and the door to the balcony was also closed. The weather was bad today, so the light was very dim, and even the shadows of people could hardly be seen clearly.

Zhan Weiyang originally wanted to find Pei Qing, but when he walked to the corridor and heard the sound of rain outside, he suddenly remembered his flower pot.

So he walked to the balcony, opened the door and stood at the door, seeing the raindrops falling down. The ground of the entire balcony had been soaked for a long time, reflecting the dim light.

His flower pot was placed in the middle, and it seemed to have caught a lot of rainwater because of the rain—he could hear the sound of raindrops falling into it.

Zhan Weiyang thought if he stayed here in the future, he would be exposed to the rain if it rained, and no one would come to hold an umbrella for him. Although he might not be afraid of the rain at that time, he was still very pitiful.

Or he could put the flower pot in Pei Qing’s room. Zhan Weiyang suddenly had this idea. He was excited for a moment but soon thought that Pei Qing would not live in his house forever, and when Pei Qing moved away in the future, he would be left alone as a tree in an empty room.

At that moment, Zhan Weiyang felt very sad.

Chapter 13

Jiang Tongyan’s right eyelid twitched crazily.

He frantically recalled whether the twitching of his right eye was for disaster or wealth.

He thought to himself: Do you think I care about your dirty money? What could I even do with that little amount? Just look at your face—does it look like you’re willingly giving me that money? Keep your filthy money to yourself!

But just as he was about to say this, a sudden inspiration came to his mind, and he smiled slightly, reaching out to take the card while saying hypocritically, “I didn’t expect you to be so nice.”

He pinched Qian Xiaoke’s bank card with his index finger and thumb and pulled it for a while, but it didn’t follow.

Qian Xiaoke couldn’t bear to give it up!

He frowned, bit his lips, and stared at his bank card. The strength in his hand didn’t decrease at all, and even the other hand came up.

“…Friend, do you want to give it to me or not?” On the roadside, two men were fighting for a bank card.

Qian Xiaoke was heartbroken and almost cried bitterly. He finally understood that this was the disaster brought by desire.

He was wrong. He was wrong from the beginning. If he hadn’t been drunk that night, he wouldn’t have gotten together with Jiang Tongyan. If he hadn’t gotten together with Jiang Tongyan, he wouldn’t have indirectly…or directly caused Jiang Tongyan to become impotent. If Jiang Tongyan hadn’t become impotent, he wouldn’t have lost all his wealth…

       It’s retribution.

The retribution of life came so quickly.

Qian Xiaoke let go, like a heartbroken mother watching her precious child being taken away. He stared at the bank card, his eyes glistening with tears like the dew on a lupine flower.

Jiang Tongyan took the card and asked with a smile, “How much money is in it? Look at you… Wait, you really cried?”

Jiang Tongyan was startled. He just wanted to tease this kid; why did he cry?

Which proper man cried at the drop of a hat?

He didn’t dare to say this for fear that the other party would cry even harder.

“No,” Qian Xiaoke rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, “You are the one crying.”

Jiang Tongyan was a little panicked. He couldn’t stand it. If he made someone cry on the street, people who didn’t know would think he was bullying them.

He quickly stuffed the card into the small pocket of Qian Xiaoke’s schoolbag, “Take it back, take it back. I really can’t afford to mess with you.”

“No.” Qian Xiaoke took out the bank card again and put it directly into Jiang Tongyan’s trouser pocket, “I said I would treat your illness.”

“…What you said reminds me of my dad.”

Jiang Tongyan took the card out of his pocket, unzipped Qian Xiaoke’s schoolbag, put it in, and then zipped it up again for him.

       “Oh, I don’t…”

“Don’t move!” Jiang Tongyan shouted, scaring Qian Xiaoke, “I was just teasing you, but you took it seriously. Who wants your money? Don’t I have it myself?”

Qian Xiaoke muttered, “Yours is yours, and mine is… for your medical treatment.”

“…Qian Xiaoke, if you dare to mention medical treatment again… You don’t believe I will stuff you into the sewer?”

Qian Xiaoke looked up at him and snorted disdainfully, “That’s illegal!”

       “Killing people is illegal!”

       “Have you killed anyone?”

       Jiang Tongyan: “…No.”

Qian Xiaoke was stunned, then squatted on the side of the road and laughed.

Jiang Tongyan stood there with a dark face looking at him. When Qian Xiaoke finished laughing, he looked up and said to Jiang Tongyan, “You are so funny.”

“You are the funny one,” Jiang Tongyan bent down slightly and poked his forehead with his finger, “Let’s forget about today’s matter. You are not allowed to mention it in the future. You are not allowed to mention it to anyone. Do you hear me?”

       Qian Xiaoke nodded obediently.

“If you dare to tell others, I will…”

       “Stuff me into the sewer.”

Jiang Tongyan hummed with satisfaction, straightened up, and looked down at Qian Xiaoke, “Okay, kneel down.”

“…You are crazy!” Qian Xiaoke stood up, but because he stood up too hard, he suddenly felt dizzy and leaned directly into Jiang Tongyan’s arms.

Jiang Tongyan: “…What are you doing? Trying to scam me again?”

“It’s okay, it’s okay, stay calm and don’t panic!” Qian Xiaoke was really dizzy. He had low blood pressure and low blood sugar. He stood up too quickly just now, and his blood pressure couldn’t keep up with his agile body. “Don’t panic!”

His vision went black, and the sky spun around for several seconds.

Jiang Tongyan managed to stay composed, spreading his arms behind him and using his chest to support Qian Xiaoke. His face was written all over with the expression: Nothing to do with me, he’s just faking it!

After a few seconds, Qian Xiaoke’s vision was bright again.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay.” After Qian Xiaoke recovered, he turned his head to look at him, “What’s with your posture?”

“I’m a mysophobe,” Jiang Tongyan said, “Please get out of the way and stay one meter away from me.”

Jiang Tongyan was really scared. Whenever he met this guy, he would remember the scene that day when he couldn’t get hard no matter how hard they tried.

Other people’s intimate encounters were always filled with passion and tenderness, but when it came to him, all that was left was awkward tension and a mental stampede of frustration.

“You don’t have mysophobia,” Qian Xiaoke stood up straight and took a half step back obediently, but he continued to complain, “I saw a mysophobia person come to see Chairman Cheng before, and you are not.”

Jiang Tongyan looked at him sideways impatiently, “Don’t change the subject.”

Qian Xiaoke tilted his head and looked at him, “Oh, then continue, what were we just talking about?”

       What were we talking about?

       Jiang Tongyan also forgot.

He waved his hand, “Forget it. I’ll go insane if I say one more word to you.”

He glanced at the time and prepared to go back to the hotel.

“Chairman Jiang,” Qian Xiaoke had a flash of inspiration, “Are you going back to rest? Go back to the hotel?”

Jiang Tongyan almost covered his chest and yelled, ‘What are you going to do to me?’ on the side of the road in front of everyone, but fortunately, he controlled himself.

       “…What are you planning?”

Today, when those colleagues gossiped, they mentioned that the hotel where Jiang Tongyan was staying was not far from Qian Xiaoke’s home. If he could get a ride back, he would not only not have to squeeze into the subway but also save a few dollars.

Qian Xiaoke carried his small schoolbag and looked at Jiang Tongyan obediently.

When he was obedient, Jiang Tongyan felt a chill on his back and always felt that this person was holding back his fart.

“If you have something to say, please say it. Don’t be like this.”

“Chairman Jiang, you are such a good person.” Qian Xiaoke smiled at him, his eyes curved, and a row of white and neat teeth flashed simultaneously.

       “…Are you schizophrenic?”

“Chairman Jiang, you are handsome and kind.”

       “You are schizophrenic.”

“Chairman Jiang, you are such a kind person. Surely, you’ll give me a lift, right?”

“Oh, so you have something to ask of me.”

“Chairman Jiang, you know, I am a poor little worker. I squeeze into the subway and transfer back and forth several times a day. Since the subway price has increased, the cost of travel has increased, and my life has become increasingly difficult.”

Jiang Tongyan listened to him talking nonsense, and he almost hurt himself by holding back his laughter.

“Where is your home? What if it was not in the same way?”

“It’s the same way, it’s definitely the same way!” Qian Xiaoke said, “Just go where you want to go; wherever you go, I will go there!”

“Really?” Jiang Tongyan wanted to tease her again, he raised his eyebrows, “Do you know where I’m going?”

“Where?” Qian Xiaoke blinked his big eyes and looked at him innocently.

Jiang Tongyan smiled slightly and poked Qian Xiaoke’s heart with his finger, “I want to go to your heart.”

Chapter 6

The air in the old house had the faint smell of sandalwood, making it easy to relax. The sound of cicadas outside the window was a little noisy, but it easily brought him back to the past. Lying on the bed, many old things from his youth came to mind. He fell asleep thinking about it, and when he woke up, it was already sunrise.

He slowly got out of bed. When the middle-aged man waiting in the hall saw him coming downstairs, he nodded and greeted, “Young Master Yun.”

“Du Chuan.” Chu Yunhan searched his mind briefly before recalling this name, “Long time no see.”

Du Chuan was the housekeeper personally selected by Chu Yu. He had been with Chu Yichen since he was young and was responsible for taking care of all his daily life. In his impression, this man always had a gentle and refined demeanour, never lost his temper, and was always calm and composed. He did things in a very orderly manner, almost never making any mistakes.

“Yes. Are you having breakfast now?”

“Yeah.” He responded and sat down at the dining table.

Plain porridge, small side dishes, accompanied by two or three types of Chinese dim sum—these were still the old man’s habits. He ate slowly and methodically, biting into the shrimp filling, and asked, “Is this still Aunt Wang’s cooking?”

       “Yes.”

“Have you eaten yet? Why don’t we sit down and have something?”

       “I’ve eaten; enjoy your meal.”

The attempt to get closer had failed. Chu Yunhan pretended to ask casually, “How has Jiahui been lately?”

“I’m not sure about Miss Zhou’s situation.”

“Has she come here to see me?”

       “No.”

He frowned, “No? Not even once?”

       “Yes.”

How could that be? Jiahui usually loved inviting him out for meals, but it had been three months without any contact—but not even once had she reached out to him?

“Did Chu Yichen say something to her?” Chu Yunhan raised his eyebrows, “What lies did he make up to deceive her?”

       “I don’t know.”

He said angrily, “Interesting. You spend every day with that master of yours, but you don’t know anything?”

Du Chuan remained silent, his expression still impeccably polite, leaving no room for criticism.

Chu Yunhan knew that there was no point in arguing with him, so he put down his spoon and said, “Arrange a car for me. I want to go out.”

“The young master has told me that you need to stay at home for the time being.”

He was startled, “…What do you mean?”

“Without the Young Master’s consent, I cannot arrange for you to go out.”

Chu Yunhan asked in disbelief, “He wants to lock me here?”

No response was equivalent to a tacit admission.

“Ha, ‘lose everything’, that’s what it is.” He angrily kicked the table leg, trying to calm his emotions, “Did he say how long he would lock me up?”

       “No.”

“I want to see him. Where is he?”

       “The Young Master is out.”

       “When will he come back?”

       “I don’t know.”

“…” He sat dejectedly for a while and said gloomily, “Let me know when he gets back. That’s not too much to ask, is it?”

“Alright, Young Master Yun.” The butler responded politely.

His phone had been taken away by the bodyguards the night he was caught. There was no TV signal in the room, and the curved display screen could only be used for playing single-player games. Although he was allowed to move freely within the mansion, the scope of his movement was limited to his room and some ‘accessible’ common areas, such as dining rooms, libraries, and hot spring pools. When he tried to enter the computer control room, he was stopped coldly by the bodyguard. Du Chuan told him tactfully that permission was required to enter the computer room.

Who’s approval was needed? It’s obvious. That person had completely confined him, cutting off all possible connections with the outside world. Chu Yunhan patiently waited for a full three days, but Chu Yichen still hadn’t returned. When he asked Du Chuan, the only response he got was—Young Master was busy.

Yeah right. What was he busy with? He just wanted to avoid seeing him.

At first, he could pass the time playing games and reading books, but as time went on, everything started to feel meaningless. After all, he had spent the past few years living a carefree life, travelling, vacationing, horseback riding, skiing, playing golf, racing cars, chasing young models, and partying in nightclubs—living it up. Now, confined to this small space with no entertainment, it was unbearably frustrating, and what made him even more anxious was the lack of news about Jiahui and his mother.

Chu Yunhan paced around his room like an ant on a hot pan every day. As the days went by, his anxiety continued to churn and was forcibly suppressed, making it a real torment. With half a month passing and Chu Yichen showing no intention of appearing, he steeled himself and began a hunger strike.

Sure enough, on the third day of his hunger strike, when his legs were weak from hunger, Du Chuan came upstairs and asked him to come down, saying that Chu Yichen was back.

The man was wearing a dark brown silk home suit and was sitting on the large sofa in the study room reading documents. Hei Yu stood behind him, bowing and talking to him from time to time.

Chu Yunhan was impatient. He sat on the opposite sofa and asked bluntly, “How long do you plan to lock me up?”

The man flipped through the documents in his hand and said, without even raising his head, “Why? Are you tired of living here?”

How could you not get tired? There was nothing in this miserable place. He kept his words in his heart and said in a low voice, “I want to go out to see Jiahui. You can also send someone to follow me.” After saying that, seeing that the other party did not react, he quickly added a guarantee, “I won’t cause you trouble.”

“Jiahui went to Northern Europe to relax and won’t be back for the time being.”

Chu Yunhan was stunned, “Why would she go there?”

Chu Yichen raised his eyes and looked at him lightly without answering.

That look made his heart pound. It took him a long time to figure it out, and his face became hot. The purpose of sending Jiahui far away was to prevent her from getting involved in the rebellion he started. Not only would it be embarrassing for her to be in the middle of a brotherly rivalry, but it could also be dangerous if things got out of hand. He had vaguely thought of this at the time, but the situation was urgent, and he was led by the grey wolf half-heartedly, so there was no way he could take care of so much. Chu Yichen obviously considered the problem much more carefully than he did.

       “Then…when will she come back?”

“You don’t need to know.” The man cut off the conversation, “You and she will never have the chance to meet again.”

Chu Yunhan sat stiffly, his throat dry, “You want to lock me up for the rest of your life?”

“Now you understand what it means to have nothing?”

He felt a chill all over as if he had fallen into an ice cellar, cold from head to toe. This guy was serious. When they gave him the choice of life or death, they had already prepared for this, intending to imprison him for life.

Was this what the so-called heir’s education has produced? So cruel.

What was the point of living as a prisoner, even if he lived a long life with good clothes and fine food? But when the words ‘Then just kill me’ came to his lips, he couldn’t say them out. He was afraid that the person’s understatement of ‘Okay’ would really turn him into a cold corpse. He was afraid of death.

He wanted to live; even if locked up, he still wanted to live.

       How sad.

He hated himself for being so weak and stupid.

His eyes turned red unknowingly. Chu Yunhan stood up and walked out. A man’s deep voice came from behind him, “If you think the hunger strike is interesting, feel free to continue.”

He paused, gritted his teeth and clenched his fists.

You wanted me to commit suicide? But I won’t go along with your wishes.

He walked out of the study quickly and said to Du Chuan in the hall, “I’m hungry. Prepare a meal for me.”

The imprisonment continued, and Chu Yunhan’s mind was filled with thoughts of how to escape except for eating and sleeping every day. After waiting for a full week, he finally got the chance. Early that morning, Du Chuan informed him that he was temporarily staying in his room and was not allowed to go out. He also sent two bodyguards to guard the door. He knew that someone he knew must have come to the old house.

When he was a child, the old man also set up curfews. He would often sneak out in the middle of the night to join his friends for fun and practice his ability to climb the balcony and jump into the water pipe. Now he rummaged through the box and found the old rope he had used. He crouched on the balcony, looked around carefully, and, taking advantage of the moment when no one was watching, swiftly slid down the pipe.

After having lived there for so long and scouting the area several times in recent days, he carefully made his way forward, hiding and avoiding detection. He had been hiding behind a shelf in the east wing storage room for a long time before finally hearing sounds from the garden outside. Peering through a small window, he saw the back of someone in a pink dress, and his heart leapt with joy, almost causing him to knock over the shelf. Once he managed to calm himself down, he crouched by the window and imitated a few bird calls.

This was a game they used to play when they were kids. He would spend all day playing and running around with Chu Minran, causing a ruckus in the courtyard. Chu Yichen, with his calm demeanour, mostly spent his time reading but would occasionally join in their games. Zhou Jiahui was the daughter of the little brother of Chu Yunhan’s mother, Zhou Yuran. With the younger sibling often bedridden due to poor health, Zhou Yuran would frequently bring her to stay with them. The little girl was very cute and won the old man’s affection, and also repeatedly called him ‘Yunhan ge’. Because she was young, she could never find them during hide-and-seek and would end up crying in frustration. Chu Yunhan would mimic bird calls to draw her attention so she could find him, and then he would help her look for the others.

This sound was like a secret code between the two of them. When they grew up, they always liked to joke like this. As soon as he called twice, Zhou Jiahui turned around in surprise. It took her a long time to see him through the small window.

Chu Yunhan hurriedly made a silent gesture and winked at her desperately. Jiahui came out to answer the phone and was very surprised to see him, but she saw that he looked anxious and did not look like he was playing around. Then she avoided others and quietly entered the storage room.

“Why are you here? Yichen ge just said that you…” She was interrupted before she could finish her words. Chu Yunhan said anxiously, “I don’t have time to explain. Lend me your mobile phone.”

When he got the phone, his hands were shaking. He hurriedly pressed a series of numbers and sent a message with only four words.

       “Help me. Chu Yunhan.”
