Chapter 71 – End of Story

The wedding of Suo Yang and Shen Huiming was not held immediately. After some discussion, they decided to keep it as simple as possible.

Neither of them liked to show off; they felt that making a big fuss was unnecessary. After all, this matter was ultimately about only the two of them. Moreover, Berlin was so far away, and their family and friends had their own lives. It wouldn’t make sense to insist that everyone should come to Berlin. If they didn’t do it in Berlin, there was even less reason to do it when they came back

In addition, various procedures must be prepared to meet other people’s requirements as much as possible, which requires time and energy to prepare.

After returning from Suo Yang’s hometown, the two of them started to be busy again; one was busy with the company, and the other started flying again.

Both of them were busy like this until the Spring Festival1around Chinese New Year. After Suo Yang’s flight arrangements were made, some people came to ask him to transfer their shifts again, and this time, Suo Yang refused.

He smiled and said, “This year, I’ll be celebrating the New Year with my lover and his parents. I hope you understand; I feel a bit awkward about it.”

He said ‘my lover’ openly, which surprised his colleagues.

The news of Suo Yang’s relationship had long been spread in the company, but Song Kai, the only one who knew who his love partner was, didn’t say much, and everyone didn’t like to dig into other’s privacy. They just casually sighed that their idol had found his other half and moved on.

But it was quite incredible to hear this from Suo Yang himself.

The other party apologized to him, and Suo Yang smiled, “It’s okay, but I’m sorry, I can’t help you anymore.”

“No, no, no, don’t say that,” his colleague said to him with a smile, “I wish you a Happy New Year in advance.”

Suo Yang’s last flight before the New Year took him to New York. Upon his return, it was the morning of New Year’s Eve, and Shen Huiming drove directly to pick him up. They went to Suo Yang’s home first, did a quick cleanup, and around noon, they headed to Shen Huiming’s parents’ place.

Shen Huiming once asked Suo Yang if he wanted to bring his parents over to celebrate the New Year, but Suo Yang refused after considering it.

On the way to Shen Huiming’s parents’ house, the two went to the supermarket.

Shen Huiming’s mother had previously sent him a long shopping list and asked them to buy it when they came back. She said, “With young manpower, of course, we need to make good use of it!”

Two tall and handsome men with long legs, wearing the same style of black woollen coats, one was pushing a shopping cart from the supermarket, and the other was walking beside, looking at the list and mumbling something.

Happy songs were playing in the supermarket, and there were long queues even to buy groceries and for the weighing of groceries.

Suo Yang had never had such an experience. In his world, the Spring Festival was even more deserted than before. It was not until today that he really felt what it meant to be bustling.

After the two of them finished shopping, one person came out with two big bags and put them in the trunk.

Shen Huiming said, “My mom probably thinks that supermarkets won’t open before the fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year, right? Buying so many groceries, I wonder if we can finish eating them all.”

Suo Yang was laughing next to him, feeling that this Spring Festival was really different.

They went back to Shen Huiming’s parents’ place. After changing their coats, they started to work with his parents. They posted Spring Festival couplets when they should and prepared dishes when they should. Shen Huiming’s cooking skills were better than Suo Yang’s, so he was naturally the one in the kitchen. Suo Yang Yang followed Shen Huiming’s father and took Spring Festival couplets and tape, starting from the outside door, and finally pasted the word “福2good fortune/luck” on the door of the refrigerator at home.

Shen Huiming’s father checked it with satisfaction, confirmed that nothing was missing, and went to make tea with satisfaction.

Suo Yang thought this family was really cute. He stood there and looked at the red word “福” on the refrigerator and smiled.

A family of four made ten dishes and one soup.

While watching the Spring Festival Gala, Shen Huiming’s mother suddenly slapped her thigh, “I almost forgot about something important!”

She went back to the bedroom and took out four pairs of red socks.

Shen Huiming smiled. “None of the four of us are born in the same year. Is it necessary?”

“Of course, it is necessary!” Shen Huiming’s mother showed them the soles of the socks, “Step on the evil spirits, put them on, put them all on3Wearing red socks during Chinese New Year is a tradition believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. Red is considered an auspicious colour in Chinese culture, symbolizing happiness, good fortune, and prosperity..”

Suo Yang took it with a smile, said thank you and put it on immediately.

Shen Huiming complained on the side, “Mom, you are really…forget it, I won’t say it anymore.”

“Then don’t say anything. Look how obedient Suo Yang is.” Shen Huiming’s mother watched the three grown men put on their red socks and said, “Step on the evil spirits!”

Suo Yang laughed out loud while leaning against Shen Huiming and stamped his feet as hard as he could.

“Okay, okay,” Shen Huiming took Suo Yang to the balcony, “They can look for us downstair later. Want to go to the balcony for some fresh air? It’s a bit stuffy inside.”

The two went to the balcony and opened the window a small gap.

“How’s it going? You don’t feel uncomfortable, do you?”

Suo Yang shook his head and leaned slightly against Shen Huiming.

Shen Huiming stood firm and let him lean on him.

“I’m very happy,” Suo Yang said, “I’ve never spent the Spring Festival like this.”

Shen Huiming held his hand, and the two stood on the balcony, looking at the night sky outside the window. The two red lanterns hanging on the balcony reflected their faces red.

“We’ll do this every year from now on, just don’t find it annoying.”

Why is it annoying? Suo Yang turned around and saw Shen Huiming’s parents sitting on the sofa, eating melon seeds and watching the Spring Festival Gala.

“Let’s make dumplings together later?” Shen Huiming asked, “Can you make dumplings?”

“Never wrapped one, but I can try.”

When it was almost ten o’clock, the family of four sat together again to make dumplings. Shen Huiming was in charge of teaching Suo Yang and asked him to put candy in the dumplings.

Shen Huiming said, “This is a tradition. Whoever eats this candy will have a sweet life in the coming year.”

In the end, none of the four people got to eat it.

Because Suo Yang put sugar in the dumplings he made, as a novice, some of the dumplings broke open while cooking, and sugar cubes fell into the dumpling soup.

Shen Huiming’s mother said, “Do you know what this means?”

       Shen Huiming asked, “What?”

“It means that everyone in our family will be happy in the coming year.” Shen Huiming’s mother said with a smile, “It’s good, it’s a good sign!”

It was a good sign indeed.

Suo Yang looked at Shen Huiming and thought, in fact, the sweet life had already begun.

====

Suo Yang and Shen Huiming finally embarked on a journey to Berlin together at the end of spring. It was more difficult than they imagined to get many things done, but fortunately, no matter how long it took, everything was finally ready.

This time, they would fly together. Suo Yang was not sitting next to Shen Huiming as a flight attendant but as an ordinary passenger.

When boarding the plane, Shen Huiming asked him with a smile, “Isn’t this a wonderful feeling? When you meet a flight attendant you know later and ask what you’re doing, what would you say?”

“Going to get married.” Suo Yang replied calmly while checking his passport and air ticket.

This answer was very helpful to Shen Huiming. He directly raised his hand, put his arm around Suo Yang’s shoulders and walked inside.

However, when he was approaching the door of the cabin, Shen Huiming lowered his arms. He was also shy.

From here, they flew to Berlin, with a brief stopover in Moscow on the way.

This route once witnessed the beginning of their story. It was still autumn at that time, and the violent storm in Moscow left them there. But speaking of it now, both of them were somewhat grateful for that ‘accident’ because of that night they had the opportunity to get closer to each other.

To this day, Suo Yang still remembers what Shen Huiming said to him that night.

[Because you are Suo Yang, you are unique and perfect enough.]

And how could he not think the same when he looked at Shen Huiming now?

Because it was Shen Huiming, he was unique enough, perfect enough, and enough for him to love and appreciate for a lifetime.

As he sat on the plane, Suo Yang suddenly fell into a trance. For a moment, he felt as if his consciousness had withdrawn from his body as if a bystander was watching him and Shen Huiming.

He saw the two of them sitting closely together, so close that he couldn’t hear what they were saying.

He couldn’t hear it but could feel it.

He could feel that every word and every sentence was filled with the fragrance of flowers, light and refreshing, blooming high in the spring sky.

By the time Suo Yang came to his senses, their plane had already taken off.

Shen Huiming held his hand, and the two soared into the sky together again.

At 30,000 feet high, there must be something fiddling with their fates, causing them to meet and integrating them into each other’s lives.

Suo Yang looked out the window as they gradually moved away from the city where they lived, heading to the next place with overflowing love to bear witness to their love that began in the blue sky.

After more than ten hours of flight, they watched the sun rise, the moon set, and the stars.

When arriving in Berlin, Suo Yang said, “I don’t want to wait any longer.”

The two went directly from the airport to go through the formalities and get the certificate. What surprised Suo Yang was that when he got the marriage certificate, he was not as excited as expected, it was as if everything was as it should be.

He was supposed to fall in love with Shen Huiming, be with Shen Huiming, marry Shen Huiming and spend his life together.

A man who had never yearned for or had any hope for marriage now felt that his marriage to Shen Huiming was necessary and essential.

“Let’s go to the church.” The two held hands and returned to the small church where they had attended a stranger’s wedding together.

This time, there was no one else, not even the priest, but God was everywhere, and the God of Love was everywhere.

With their fingers clasped together, they solemnly entered the church. They walked past the empty rows of seats and walked to the cross.

They didn’t have any faith, but they believed in love.

The two of them stood here, just looking at each other and letting each other listen to their own heartbeats.

Shen Huiming knelt down on one knee first and took out the ring that he had prepared for a long time.

“Mr. Suo Yang, are you willing to spend the rest of your life with Mr. Shen Huiming?”

Suo Yang looked at him with a smile, “I do.”

Shen Huiming put the ring on him, and then Suo Yang did the same to him.

“Mr. Shen Huiming, are you willing to grow old together with Mr. Suo Yang?”

“I do,” Shen Huiming looked at him and let the other person put on a wedding ring for him. Then the two hugged and kissed. Shen Huiming said in Suo Yang’s ear, “How about we also make plans for the next life while we’re at it? I always feel like a few decades in this life won’t be enough for me to love you completely.”

Suo Yang was silent for a moment, rested his chin on his shoulder, smiled silently, and then said against his ear, “Okay, Cupid said he understood.”
